The combined unit eliminates the need to transfer laundry between washing and drying, while also bringing fast drying performance and intelligent functionality that makes laundry remarkably convenient.
     
    Samsung has continued to innovate in the laundry room to offer consumers a wide array of washer and dryer models for spaces of all sizes and layouts. The Bespoke AI Laundry Ventless Combo was a standout in 2024, as it raised the bar for all-in-one washer-dryers by eliminating the common performance sacrifices associated with the format.     The Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo is a powerful model that washes and dries clothes completely in a single machine in just 68 minutes2 when using the Super Speed cycle. Its roomy 5.3 cu. ft. Ultra Capacity drum lets users do more laundry in a single load, and its vented design uses the internal heater and fan to move hot air through clothes and vent out moisture, ensuring clothes are always dried quickly and thoroughly. For even more convenience, the Vented Combo can simply swap out the currently installed washer and electric vented dryer.
     
    And with Samsung’s AI Bubble technology, users can enjoy clean clothes, cycle after cycle. Water, air and detergent combine to create a cleansing foam that seeps into fabrics for an effective wash. To tackle tough stains without spending time pretreating them, the Steam Wash cycle comes into action. Its intuitive 7-inch AI Home display is simple to use and gives a quick access to the Combo’s settings for effortless operation. And for those busy moments when the user is multi-tasking or has their hands full, convenient Voice Control capabilities let them give commands to turn the Combo on or off, access settings and more.3
     

    Samsung’s AI Opti Wash & Dry technology uses powerful AI sensors to detect soil levels and fabrics, automatically adjusting settings as needed during the cycle to deliver a better wash and dry.4 For added convenience, the Flex Auto Dispense System automatically dispenses up to 47 loads5 of detergent — or users can choose to split the compartment, so it dispenses up to 34 loads of fabric softener and 25 loads of detergent. And when the clothes are finished drying, the Auto Open Door pops open, allowing leftover moisture to evaporate, preventing unpleasant, musty odor so clothes are fresh and dry when taken out.

     
    And with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, users can also get end-of-cycle alerts and remotely start, stop or delay the Combo from their mobile phone, using the SmartThings app.6

    SmartThings Energy allows them to monitor power consumption and estimate their monthly electricity bill for improved control over their energy usage.8 They can also turn on AI Energy Mode9 to have the Vented Combo automatically optimize its energy consumption and reduce usage by up to 30%.10 The Vented Combo is also equipped with Samsung’s Less Microfiber cycle setting, which allows users to gently clean synthetic textiles while reducing 39% of microfibers released into the ocean.11

    Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo comes in two premium colors — Dark Steel and Brushed Black for the U.S. consumers. Only the Brushed Black is available in Canada and the Dark Steel in Mexico. For those who prefer the ventless version, the Bespoke AI Laundry Ventless Combo with Heat Pump is available in Dark Steel.

    Samsung Electronics unveiled its refreshed “AI Home” vision and innovative appliance lineup at its global launch event, Welcome to Bespoke AI, in Seoul, Korea. With a focus on providing a more secure and intuitive user experience, the company introduced an AI Home experience, showcasing advanced AI features and a wider range of screen-enabled appliances.
     
    Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, opened the global press conference by introducing the company’s vision for creating an AI Home that harmoniously connects various devices and, as a result, caters to user needs in every room of the home.
     
    “Through our Bespoke AI appliances, Samsung has brought an AI Home to life that not only enhances everyday convenience but also enables energy savings and care,” said Jeong Seung Moon. “We will continue to expand the advanced AI Home to more households, leveraging smart screens, Bixby and Knox security.”

    During the event, Samsung introduced its Bespoke AI appliances for 2025, which bring new and innovative functionalities to solve users’ difficult problems.
     
    At the heart of the company’s vision is the AI Home display.1 Built upon the innovation of the first introduction of the AI Home display last year, the AI Home with new size options has been expanded to a broad range of new products, such as Bespoke AI Refrigerators, the Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, Washers and Dryers.2

     
    The 9-inch AI Home screen on the Bespoke AI Refrigerator lineup increases consumers’ options by offering a similar experience to what’s available on the larger AI Family Hub screen. With the upgraded AI Vision Inside,3 food management has been enhanced with new features such as automatic recognition of processed food items,4 for models with the AI Family Hub and those with the AI Home. Through the 7-inch AI Home in the Bespoke AI Laundry, users can intuitively control the washing and drying cycles, as well as monitor and control other connected devices.5
     

    Moreover, the new Bespoke AI appliances bring enhanced features that adapt to consumer needs. For example, the Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator utilizes AI to efficiently cool the inside of the fridge, detecting its current status and predicting internal temperature changes to effectively adapt cooling.
     
    The Bespoke AI Laundry includes new functions to enhance consumer convenience, with new standalone models that have upgraded AI Wash and AI Dry to AI Wash+ and AI Dry+,6 as well as models to be launched in Europe, using up to 55% less energy than class A minimum requirements for the washer.7 Also, Samsung unveiled the new Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, which is the first ever vented combo in its class.8 It significantly reduces drying time, finishing both washing and drying in 68 minutes with its Super Speed cycle.

     
    Samsung is continuing to innovate its vacuum cleaner lineup, as well. The cordless stick vacuum cleaner, the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra, will be launched with the world’s most powerful9 suction power of up to 400W.10 The upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.011 classifies more diverse environments12 like corners13 and the type of carpets14 for improved cleaning performance.

     
    Samsung also revealed the Bespoke AI Jet Bot Steam Ultra.15 Not only is the robot vacuum cleaner designed to climb thresholds, but it is also enhanced with AI Object Recognition for complex environments,16 which can recognize obstacles as small as 1cm, and even transparent liquids17 for better cleaning results. And when it encounters corners or walls, the brush pops out, allowing it to clean areas that can be difficult for typical robot vacuum cleaners to deal with.

     
     
    Samsung Home Appliances Bring Easy To Use, Care and Saving to Consumers
    Samsung elaborated further on its “AI Home” vision and its commitment to integrating AI across the connected experience to cater to diverse lifestyles — through the core benefits of Easy to Use, Care and Saving.
     
    Thanks to the adoption of the AI Home display, users will find it easier than ever to engage with the full functionality of their Bespoke AI appliances. The smart screen is now an even better central control hub, even connecting third party devices through SmartThings without the need for a separate hub device.18 Users can also utilize features like the refrigerators’ Daily Board to receive personalized information and better manage their day — or use Map View to effortlessly monitor and control other connected devices.

     
    The upgraded Bixby allows for easier control of appliances through voice commands and enhances usability through new features like Voice ID.19 It personalizes services by recognizing the user’s voice, automatically switching to the Samsung account of the speaker and showing their calendar on the screen. And if that person also uses the low vision option on their Galaxy smartphone, it will be automatically synced to the screen for a better viewing experience.
     
    New SmartThings services were also introduced during the event, including Family Care,20 which sends an alert to other family members if a user’s movement is not detected at the set time — or if there is no activity for a certain amount of time after the last activity. It is also possible to use the robot vacuum cleaner to look for signs of an emergency, with all of this functionality being tightly secured by Samsung Knox.
     
     
    Continued Efforts To Deliver Reliable Experiences
    To complete its “AI Home” vision for 2025, Samsung shone a light on how it is pushing the boundaries of innovation, prioritizing a trusted experience for users.
     
    First, Samsung will apply enhanced Knox security to devices across the lineup so that users will be able to enjoy their AI Home experience with peace of mind. This year in particular, Trust Chain, which is part of Knox Matrix, is applied to all Wi-Fi enabled appliances launching in 2025. Users can continuously monitor products’ security status in real time through the dashboard.21
     
    Knox Vault is also applied to home appliances for the first time,22 storing particularly sensitive user information, such as passwords and authentication information, in a separate hardware chip to ensure protection. Furthermore, to protect against the potential of future quantum attacks, Samsung’s security is also equipped with post-quantum cryptography (PQC), a part of Knox Matrix Credential Sync, for its screen-applied products.23

     
    Another key priority for Samsung is making sure that customers can use the latest software features on their existing appliances without buying new ones. With Smart Forward,24 the software update service through SmartThings, Samsung continuously updates its appliances with new features to enhance the consumer experience.
     
    Samsung is also actively improving product maintenance. SmartThings Home Care utilizes AI to diagnose each appliance’s status, and if signs of malfunction are detected, it sends a notification in advance. In addition, a technical support representative can provide guidance on remote measures based on pre-diagnosis results.25 This support feature has already expanded to more countries, including France, Netherlands and Canada, following Korea and the United States.
     
    By integrating all of these wide-ranging initiatives, Samsung aims to create safer and more reliable smart home experiences that users can enjoy with comfort and peace of mind.

    Do you find yourself feeling more tired once the clocks spring forward for British Summer Time? Well, you’re not alone. Although losing an hour the night of Daylight Saving Time (DST) may seem insignificant, a study of the sleep patterns of Samsung Health users[1] across the world including 40 European countries reveals disruptions to sleep patterns can be felt weeks later, hitting younger age groups the hardest.
     
     
    Clock Changes Takes a Toll on Sleep, With Younger Generations Most Disrupted
     
    When looking into how much of an impact the clock change has on people the morning after, one thing is clear: everyone’s sleep patterns are affected. In fact, people fall asleep on average 37 minutes later than the previous night, and wake up 34 minutes earlier. While losing sleep isn’t easy at any age, those in their twenties likely felt it the most, losing half-an-hour more than everyone else thanks to an extremely late bedtime and a seeming inability to sleep in.
     

     
    Sleep patterns remained inconsistent in the days following the time change as people struggled to return to their regular bedtimes and wake times, and those in their twenties again seemed to be affected the most. Unable to get their sleep patterns under control, this cohort continued to fall sleep more than 20 minutes later than normal, yet woke up only 5 minutes later – missing critical rest. By the third week, sleep patterns for all age groups were still not back to normal, with bedtimes 3 minutes later and wake up times still 14 minutes earlier than average.
     

     
    Sleep Score – calculated based on an evaluation of a user’s total sleep time, time awake, sleep cycle, plus physical and mental recovery – was at the worst level for weeks after – and again, people in their twenties appeared to be most affected. When looking at the seven-day Sleep Score average, the twenties age group demonstrated the slowest score recovery rate, while older age groups adapted much quicker.
     
     
    Useful Tips to Help You Recover for a Good Night’s Sleep
     
    The time transition clearly affects the sleep patterns of all age groups long after the clocks change, but for younger generations, prioritising sleep management during this time couldn’t be more important. Sleep is essential for rest and repair of our body, as well as good physical and mental health[2].
     
    In recognition of the clock changes, Sleep scientist and Samsung Wellness Council member, Vanessa Hill, shares useful tips in collaboration with Samsung Health on how to harness technology to understand your sleep patterns and habits for a better night’s rest as the clocks change.

    The April 13 opening of the 2025 Japan International Expo (Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, “Expo 2025”) is rapidly approaching. In mid-February, a completion ceremony for Panasonic Group’s hands-on “The Land of Nomo” pavilion was held at the venue for Expo 2025 on Yumeshima in Konohana-ku, Osaka. Based on the concept of “Set your heart and mind free, and the world will open up,” the pavilion has various features to stimulate the senses of children—leaders of the next generation—and “Unlock” their imaginations. In the following we introduce more details about the completed pavilion, including features of each area, together with comments from architect Yuko Nagayama, who designed the building, and Michiko Ogawa, Director in charge of Kansai External Relations and EXPO Promotion at Panasonic Holdings Co.

    Construction Completed on The Land of NOMO and Its “Unlock” Experience

    The Panasonic Group’s The Land of NOMO pavilion was designed as a place where children, especially those from the Alpha generation, could experience the concept of “circulation,” which is the idea that everything is connected—matter, minds, sustainability, and well-being.
    The keyword “recycling” is both a theme connecting exhibition content and also a feature of the pavilion’s design. The pavilion’s resource-recycling architecture, which actively utilizes recycled iron and copper recovered from end-of-Life appliances and waste materials from factories, achieves total carbon neutrality from procurement through dismantling. Commenting on the design, Nagayama said that it extends beyond reuse and usability to also express “Joy and Beauty.” 

    The recently completed “The Land of NOMO” consists of the 922 m2 “Unlock Experience Area” and the 165 m2 “Earth” exhibition area1. The Land of NOMO’s tagline is “Unlock your nature.”

    The façade is covered with a membrane made of layered organdie2 and a special metal. The effect is of soft fabric fluttering in the sea breeze. Said Nagayama: “It’s a structure that changes its appearance and reveals different shapes depending on how you look at it.”
    2 A thin, light, and transparent fabric

    The façade was completed at the end of January 2025, and consists of 730 organdie membranes installed on 1,404 frames. The façade is formed by these stacked curved frames, which represent “circulation.” As many as 20 units are stacked together in some parts of the façade.

    Outside the pavilion is displayed a prototype of a “glass-type perovskite solar cell” designed by artist Kaede Wajima, in collaboration with HERALBONY Co., Ltd., a company involved in a number of projects to decorate the city with art created by artists with disabilities.

    During Expo 2025, The Land of NOMO pavilion will be lit up at night using electricity generated from hydrogen derived from zero-carbon electricity. A lighting ceremony was held on March 1 at the pavilion, which will be lit up with lights and mist to create a fantastic effect on the façade.

    Unlock Experience Area—What to Expect in Each ZONE

    The Land of NOMO is made up of the Unlock Experience Area and the “Earth” exhibition area. The Unlock Experience Area provides an experience that allows children to become aware of the sensitivities that lie dormant within themselves, freeing them from preconceived notions and unleashing their hidden powers.
    The Unlock Experience Area has four zones and is an immersive space that stimulates the five senses by making full use of the Panasonic Group’s “spatial production” technologies related to light, video, sound, and air. In addition, using facial expression and behavior analysis techniques based on research into “Human Insight,” the possibilities and stories of each individual are depicted using a “butterfly” motif that reflects the person’s individuality and characteristics.

    ZONE 1: Deep within the Mirror Pond—Wandering through the Land of Nomo

    ZONE 1 uses technology based on “Space Tune ”—a 23.4-channel 3D sound system composed of high-quality Technics speakers and high-brightness projectors—to adjust the optimal sound quality according to the room’s setup. 
    Participants who wander into the zone have their senses sharpened cross-modally through three-dimensional sound, visuals, and vibrations, allowing them to fully perceive the world of “wind, water, light, and life”—elements they usually take for granted—beginning their Unlock experience.

    ZONE 2: NOMO Forest—Exploring the Unknown World

    ZONE 2 is a beautiful forest full of life and energy. The key to this experience is a crystal device embedded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.

    The person experiencing the installation holds the crystal in their hand and explores the unknown world as their heart (sensitivity) guides them. When the crystal is held up to exhibits representing rocks and trees, they respond with sound and light. 
    Six cameras are installed in this area, and the movements of the person experiencing the installation are analyzed based on information from the wireless tags and cameras.

    ZONE 3: The Valley of Ancient Trees—Releasing Butterflies from Crystals

    ZONE 3 has 17 ancient trees, each containing transparent OLED displays and four cameras for facial expression analysis. When participants peer into the ancient trees, their expressions are analyzed, and the behavioral data from ZONE 2 is analyzed using a “sensibility model.” This results in a display of visuals reflecting the individuality and characteristics of each person. Next, a “butterfly” is released from a crystal and guides them through the “Waterfall = Mist Wall.”

    Waterfall—Taking a Courageous Step Forward

    Here they encounter a Mist Wall3 7 meters wide and 3.5 meters high. A screen of mist in the shape of a waterfall is created using Silky Fine Mist, an extremely fine mist produced by dual-fluid nozzles. Images of butterflies and other objects are projected onto the mist using a high-brightness projectors. Summoning up their courage, they step into the space beyond.

    ZONE 4: Into the Wide Open Sky—Butterflies Flap Their Wings and Harmonize

    ZONE 4 is a dynamic immersive theater where images are projected in a 360° space by 21 high-brightness projectors, and sound and visuals interact three-dimensionally. When people hold their crystal devices to the designated spots and use a “leaf-like fan device” to make wind, “butterflies” are born on the floor and produce various sounds as they flap their wings into the great sky. The separate sounds eventually harmonize, creating music, while vortex rings (mist rings) with a diameter of 1.3 meters4 are projected from five points on the ceiling, creating an immersive space.

    Holding their crystal in this space projects the person’s personal “butterfly” onto the floor. Fanning the butterfly with a fan releases it into the sky.

    After the experience, when participants return the crystal device to the designated location, each person receives an Unlock Card that reflects their experience results. By accessing the QR code printed on the card, they can look back on their experience in The Land of NOMO.

    Earth Area—Experience the Society of the Future Where People and Nature Circulate Together

    The Earth Area is a place where people can think together about a better future within an exhibition space where the cycles of human activity and natural activity interact with each other. Children visiting The Land of NOMO will have the opportunity to experience a future in which people and nature expand each other’s potential through an intuitive experience of touch and smell.
    The exhibition space introduces the following five technologies that will help make the future a reality:

    Ogawa and Nagayama shared their thoughts following the completion ceremony.
    “This project, which began in October 2021, has finally reached the completion ceremony, and I feel like we’ve come a long way,” said Ogawa. “This pavilion was made possible by the support of nearly 200 engineers from the Panasonic Group who worked on it alongside their usual jobs, and I think that the objects and technologies that adults have created with such care will resonate with children in some way. I hope that they experience a sense of excitement, and that each person carries this feeling with them for a long time. I would be pleased if many people, both children and adults, have the opportunity to let go and enjoy the Unlock experience.”
    “Children, so to speak, are ‘formless beings’ who are constantly changing. You could say that they’re still in the process of discovering what shape they will be,” said Nagayama. “It would be wonderful if these children could first see the facade of The Land of NOMO and be fascinated by the constantly changing colors and movements. I hope that they will see themselves in the ever-changing pavilion and be exhilarated.”

    The Panasonic Group is promoting a variety of initiatives to realize “an ideal society offering material and spiritual affluence” and a better life for people everywhere. As a company founded in Osaka, Panasonic will convey the technological capabilities and appeal of Japanese companies to visitors from around the world during Expo 2025.

    Opening the eighth seminar on artificial intelligence, Vice-Rector for Research Yuri Fomin noted that the discussions demonstrated the diversity and scale of the use of AI technologies by Polytechnic University scientists. This time, two reports were devoted to the use of AI methods in digital engineering of molecular and biomolecular systems and in the management of processes in a high-tech medical organization.

    The first topic was covered by Mikhail Ryazantsev, professor at the Higher School of Biomedical Systems and Technologies, director of the Scientific Research Institute “Digital Technologies in Medical and Biological Systems”. The speaker talked about the methods of machine learning and molecular systems engineering used, aimed at automating the development and optimization of the properties of molecular systems and processes, as well as synthesis and adaptation for industrial production.

    Effective automation requires an iterative process where the results of high-performance computing and/or experiments are used to train ML models, which in turn guide further development and optimization steps. It is also important to have a platform for integrating all the tools into a single workflow.

    Mikhail Nikolaevich spoke about the methods of directed evolution, combined design and the results achieved in optimizing protein properties. The professor emphasized that today chemistry is increasingly becoming an engineering science, including through the use of artificial intelligence, and the development of the industry requires appropriate software.

    Igor Ilyin, Director of the Higher School of Business Engineering and Head of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Research and Education on Technological and Economic Problems of Energy Transition (CIRETEC GT), reported on solutions to pressing problems of medical institutions that need to optimize medical, management, and support processes.

    The professor spoke about the characteristics and key aspects of the formation of the “smart clinic” architecture, as well as about digital technologies used in healthcare and projects being implemented. In particular, Igor Vasilyevich’s team is developing a system for supporting medical decision-making based on deep learning algorithms at the request of one of the largest medical centers in the country. Daniel Alliti, a postgraduate student at the Higher School of Business and Management of the Institute of Medical and Economics and Technology, spoke in more detail about the system. The system, being developed based on deep learning algorithms, should increase the efficiency of diagnostics and forecasting by 10%, reduce the number of medical errors leading to the death of the patient, reduce the routine tasks of doctors, freeing up time for receiving patients.

    The seminar participants, who included undergraduate and graduate students, asked many questions regarding the methods and speed of computations, the operating systems used, responsibility for diagnoses made using AI, the use of terminology, etc.

    It is gratifying that we have such a wide range of questions – from narrow technical to philosophical. This suggests that the topic of using artificial intelligence is truly interdisciplinary and inexhaustible, – commented on the results of the seminar Yuri Fomin.

    The Vice-Rector for Research also supported the proposal to create a glossary on the topic of artificial intelligence so that there would be a common understanding of terms among participants in interdisciplinary research groups.

    The Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB) today (March 31) announced the appointments to the New Energy Transport Fund (NET Fund) Steering Committee for a new two-year term starting from April 1. 
     
    The new term of the Steering Committee will continue to be chaired by the Chairman of the Council of Hong Kong Metropolitan University and Committee Member of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong, Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, with members comprising experts and academics in green innovative transport technologies, representatives nominated from the transport trades, and representatives of relevant government departments.
     
    The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, thanked the outgoing members, Mr Kent Lam Wing-keung, Mr Ling chi-keung, Professor Lo Hong-kam, Mr Ng Kwan-sing, Mr Wilson Or Chong-shing, Mr Matthew Wong Leung-pak, and Mr Yu Kwok-Tai, for their enormous contributions to the Steering Committee and expressed his deep appreciation for the invaluable advice from all members of the last term rendered to the Government on the enhancement measures under Applications for Trial, including adopting the merit-based assessment criteria and introducing subsidy schemes for electric franchised buses and electric taxis under Applications for Use.

    Transportation accounts for about 20 per cent of Hong Kong’s total carbon emissions. The development of green transportation is crucial to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. The Government has put in place the Fund (previously named the Pilot Green Transport Fund) since March 2011 to subsidise and encourage the testing and wider use of green innovative transport technologies for a variety of commercial transport tools. Since its establishment, the Fund has approved a total of 298 trials, including different types of green innovative transportation technologies, such as electric commercial vehicles, electric waste collection vessels and an electric vehicle as a medical clinic, with a total funding amount of about $243 million. The NET Fund will continue to subsidise the transport trade to encourage trials of other types of new energy transport technologies apart from electric commercial vehicles, and promote the wider local application of mature new transport technology. Key projects include trial applications for hydrogen fuel cell heavy vehicles and the two subsidy schemes for electric taxis and electric franchised buses.

Just a short while ago, we laid the foundation stone and inaugurated projects worth more than Rs 33,700 crore. These projects encompass housing for the underprivileged, schools, roads, railways, electricity, and gas pipelines—initiatives that will significantly enhance the quality of life for the people of Chhattisgarh. They will also generate new employment opportunities for the youth. My heartfelt congratulations to all of you on these important developmental projects.

    In our tradition, providing shelter to someone is considered a great virtue. But what could bring greater joy than the fulfilment of a person’s dream of owning a home? Today, on this auspicious occasion of Navratri and the New Year, three lakh underprivileged families in Chhattisgarh are moving into their new homes. A short while ago, I had the opportunity to meet three beneficiaries, and I could see the immense joy on their faces. One of the women was so overwhelmed with happiness that she could hardly contain her emotions. I extend my heartfelt best wishes to all these families—three lakh families—on this new chapter of their lives. The possibility of a secure roof over the heads of these poor families has become a reality only because of all of you. I say this because you placed your trust in Modi’s guarantee. Under the previous government, the dream of a pucca house for lakhs of families in Chhattisgarh remained buried in files. We had assured you that our government would turn this dream into reality. That is why, as soon as Vishnudeo ji’s government was formed, the very first cabinet decision was to construct 18 lakh houses. Today, three lakh of those homes have been completed. I am particularly pleased that many of these houses have been built in tribal regions. Numerous families from Bastar and Surguja now have pucca houses. One can truly appreciate the significance of this for families whose generations have endured hardship in makeshift huts. For those who may not fully grasp the magnitude of this change, let me put it into perspective. Imagine you are on a long journey by train or bus, standing the entire way because you cannot find a seat. The moment you secure a seat, the relief and joy you feel are immense, aren’t they? Now, imagine families who have spent their entire lives in slums or huts. Today, as they move into pucca houses, their joy knows no bounds. When I see this transformation, it fills me with new energy and strengthens my resolve to work tirelessly for my fellow countrymen.

    While the government has provided assistance in constructing these homes, the decision on how each house is built rests with the beneficiaries themselves—not the government. These are the homes of your dreams, and our government does not just build houses; it strives to enrich the lives of those who live in them. Efforts have been made to equip these homes with essential amenities, including toilets, electricity, Ujjwala gas connections, and tap water. I can see that a large number of mothers and sisters are present here today. Most of these pucca houses have been registered in the names of our women. Thousands of sisters have, for the first time, had a property legally registered in their name. My dear mothers and sisters, the happiness on your faces and your heartfelt blessings are my greatest asset.

    When such a vast number of houses are built—lakhs of them—it leads to another significant development. Consider this: who constructs these houses? Where do the materials used in their construction come from? These materials are not sourced from Delhi or Mumbai; rather, they come from local markets. The large-scale construction of houses provides employment to our masons, skilled workers such as Rani Mistris (queen/head masons), and labourers in villages. It also benefits local small shopkeepers who supply construction materials. Additionally, those who transport these goods in trucks and other vehicles gain employment opportunities. In this way, the construction of lakhs of homes has not only provided shelter but also generated widespread employment across Chhattisgarh.

    The BJP government is steadfastly fulfilling every promise made to the people of Chhattisgarh. The Chief Minister just mentioned that elections for local self-governance institutions were recently held—the three-tier elections—and the overwhelming support you have shown is truly commendable. As I stand before you today, I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for your trust and blessings.

    A large number of beneficiaries of various government schemes have gathered here today. You have personally witnessed how swiftly our government is honouring its commitments. We have fulfilled our promise to the women of Chhattisgarh. Paddy farmers have received the bonuses due for two years, and paddy has been procured at an increased Minimum Support Price (MSP). As a result, lakhs of farming families have collectively received thousands of crores of rupees. Under the previous Congress government, recruitment examinations were plagued by widespread corruption. The BJP government has ordered a thorough investigation into these examination scams. Moreover, we are now ensuring that recruitment exams are conducted with complete transparency. These honest efforts have strengthened public confidence in the BJP. Following the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has now triumphed in the civic elections as well, with its flag flying high across Chhattisgarh. The people of this state are wholeheartedly supporting the BJP government’s vision and initiatives.

    Chhattisgarh has now completed 25 years as a state, marking its silver jubilee year. Coincidentally, this year also commemorates the centenary of Atal Ji. In honour of his legacy, the Chhattisgarh government is celebrating 2025 as Atal Nirman Varsh. Our commitment is clear—we have built it, and we will make it even better. Every infrastructure project inaugurated or initiated today is a testament to this resolution.

    Chhattisgarh was created as a separate state to ensure that the benefits of development reached its people. However, under Congress rule, development remained stagnant, and wherever work was undertaken, corruption followed. The Congress party has never truly cared for your well-being. But we have. We have prioritised your lives, your comfort, and your children’s future. Our government is taking development initiatives to every village in Chhattisgarh. I have noticed a young girl here holding up a painting for quite some time. I request the security personnel to take note of her name and address. Daughter, I will send you a letter. Someone please collect it and ensure it reaches me. Thank you, dear child. Thank you very much. Today, you can see the transformation taking place—good roads are now reaching even the most remote tribal areas. For the first time, trains are connecting new regions, and I have just flagged off a new service here. Electricity is reaching these places for the first time, piped water supply is becoming a reality, and mobile towers are being installed in areas that never had connectivity before. New schools, colleges, and hospitals are being built. Chhattisgarh’s landscape is changing, and with it, its destiny is being rewritten.

    Chhattisgarh has now joined the ranks of states where 100% of the railway network operates on electricity—a remarkable achievement. Currently, railway projects worth approximately Rs 40,000 crore are underway in Chhattisgarh. Additionally, this year’s budget has allocated Rs 7,000 crore specifically for the state’s railway infrastructure. These developments will significantly enhance rail connectivity across various regions of Chhattisgarh while also improving links with neighbouring states.

    Along with financial resources, good intentions are essential for development. If there is dishonesty in both thought and action—like we witnessed under Congress rule—then even the largest treasury will be drained. We have seen this happen during Congress’s tenure, where corruption and mismanagement prevented development from reaching tribal areas. Take coal as an example—Chhattisgarh is rich in coal reserves, yet the state struggled to get enough electricity to meet its needs. Under Congress rule, the power sector remained neglected, and little effort was made to develop power plants. In contrast, our government is now actively setting up new power plants to ensure a reliable energy supply.

    We are also making significant efforts to generate electricity from solar energy. Let me introduce you to a remarkable scheme initiated by Modi—a scheme that will eliminate your electricity bill and even allow you to earn money by generating electricity at home. This initiative is called the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this scheme, our government is providing financial assistance of Rs 70,000–80,000 per household for installing solar panels. Here in Chhattisgarh, more than two lakh families have already registered for this scheme. I encourage you all to join as well and reap its benefits.

    Another example of good governance and vision is the development of gas pipelines. Chhattisgarh, being a landlocked state, is far from the sea, making gas supply a significant challenge. The previous government failed to invest adequately in gas infrastructure, leaving the state dependent on costly transportation methods. We are now addressing this issue head-on. Our government is actively laying gas pipelines in Chhattisgarh, reducing the reliance on transporting petroleum products by trucks. This will lead to lower prices for fuel and energy-related products. Additionally, the introduction of gas pipelines will enable vehicles to run on CNG, providing a cleaner and more affordable alternative. Moreover, this initiative will bring piped cooking gas directly to homes. Just as water flows to the kitchen through pipes, gas will now be supplied in the same way. We are currently working towards connecting over two lakh homes with direct piped gas supply. Beyond household benefits, the availability of gas will pave the way for new industries in Chhattisgarh. This, in turn, will create thousands of new job opportunities.

    In past decades, Congress’s policies fuelled the spread of Naxalism across several states, including Chhattisgarh. Wherever there was scarcity and lack of development, Naxalism took root and flourished. But what did the party that ruled for 60 years do? Instead of addressing the challenges, it simply declared such districts as backward and turned away from its responsibilities. As a result, entire generations of our youth were lost. Many mothers had to endure the heart-wrenching loss of their sons, and countless sisters were left grieving for their brothers.

    The indifference shown by those past governments only aggravated the crisis. You have witnessed first-hand how some of the most underprivileged tribal families were left struggling in various districts of Chhattisgarh. The Congress government never cared for them. We did. We ensured that poor tribal families had proper sanitation by launching the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. We prioritised their healthcare needs by introducing Ayushman Bharat Yojana, providing free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh. We made essential medicines affordable through PM Jan Aushadhi Kendras, where medicines are available at an 80% discount.

    Those who claim to be the champions of social justice were the very ones who ignored the tribal community for decades. This is why I say: Modi stands for those whom no one else cares for. We are actively working towards the upliftment of the tribal society through special initiatives. One such programme is the Dharti Aaba Janjati Utkarsh Abhiyan, under which Rs 80,000 crore is being invested in tribal development. This initiative is benefiting nearly 7,000 tribal villages in Chhattisgarh alone. Additionally, we recognise that within the tribal community, there exist extremely backward groups that need special attention. For the first time ever, our government has introduced the PM Janman Yojana, specifically designed for these communities. Under this scheme, development work is underway in more than 2,000 settlements across 18 districts of Chhattisgarh. Nationwide, 5,000 kilometres of roads have been approved in tribal settlements—half of these, approximately 2,500 kilometres, will be constructed in Chhattisgarh itself under the PM Janman Yojana. Moreover, many families present here today have received pucca houses through this scheme. This is the transformation we are bringing—development that reaches every doorstep.

    Today, under the double-engine government, Chhattisgarh is witnessing rapid transformation. When a health centre in Sukma district receives a national quality certificate, it instils a sense of confidence. When a health centre in Dantewada resumes operations after years of inactivity, it brings renewed optimism. These efforts are paving the way for a new era of lasting peace in Naxal-affected areas. In December’s Mann Ki Baat broadcast, I spoke about the Bastar Olympics. You may have heard how thousands of young people enthusiastically took part in the event. Their participation is clear proof of the positive change unfolding in Chhattisgarh.

    I can see a bright future for the youth of Chhattisgarh. The state’s implementation of the New Education Policy is commendable. Across the country, more than 12,000 modern PM Shri Schools have been established, with approximately 350 located in Chhattisgarh. These institutions will serve as model schools, elevating the entire education system of the state. Additionally, Eklavya Model Schools are already making remarkable progress in Chhattisgarh. Many schools in Naxal-affected areas have also been reopened, providing children with new opportunities for learning. Today, the Vidya Samiksha Kendra has also been launched in Chhattisgarh, marking another significant milestone in the state’s education sector. This initiative will enhance the quality of education, enabling real-time assistance for both teachers and students in classrooms.

    European Parliament resolution on the targeted attacks against Christians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: defending religious freedom and security

    (2025/2612(RSP))

    The European Parliament,

    – having regard to previous resolutions on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in particular its resolution of 13 February 2025 on the escalation of violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo[1],

    – having regard to Rule 136(2) of its Rules of Procedure,

    A. whereas the situation in the eastern DRC continues to deteriorate significantly, with escalating violence, persistent violations of human rights by armed groups, mass displacement, attacks on civilians and alarming humanitarian conditions;

    B. whereas on 18 March 2025 Presidents Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC and Paul Kagame of Rwanda agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in their first face-to-face meeting in over a year, facilitated by Qatari mediators in Doha;

    C. whereas the armed group M23, backed by Rwanda, has intensified attacks in North Kivu, and on 19 March 2025 it seized the mineral-rich town of Walikale, defying the ceasefire;

    D. whereas over 7 million people are currently displaced because of ongoing conflicts, with limited access to food, water, healthcare and essential services;

    E. whereas there has been an alarming increase in targeted attacks against civilians, including, but not limited to, Christians, particularly in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces, perpetrated by extremist groups; whereas these attacks, including church bombings, killings and abductions, undermine religious freedom and exacerbate intercommunal tensions; whereas the right to freedom of religion and belief is a fundamental human right and must be protected given the high level of violence and persecution;

    F. whereas women and girls in the DRC face increased levels of sexual and gender-based violence, resulting in there being one victim of rape every four minutes; whereas the staff of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, which receives many survivors of sexual violence, is alarmed about the deteriorating security situation in the area and about the security of the staff and patients in Panzi Hospital itself;

    G. whereas the illegal exploitation of mineral resources continues to fuel conflict in the region, necessitating stronger international oversight and responsible sourcing policies;

    H. whereas in February 2025, DRC President Felix Tshisekedi proposed a deal to US President Donald Trump, in which he seeks military support against M23 rebels in exchange for access to the DRC’s vast mineral resources;

    I. whereas the EU has committed to supporting stability in the DRC through diplomatic engagement, financial assistance and targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for violence and human rights abuses;

    J. whereas on 17 March 2025, the EU imposed sanctions on nine individuals and one entity responsible for acts that constitute serious human rights violations and abuses in the DRC, but further diplomatic and economic measures may be necessary;

    K. whereas the Council renewed the EU’s financial support for the deployment of Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) troops in Mozambique under the European Peace Facility (EPF); whereas the head of these forces was previously deployed in the eastern DRC to support abuses committed by M23, giving rise to serious doubt as to whether there are sufficient safeguards attached to EPF support, including effective vetting and other human rights requirements;

    1. Expresses deep concern over the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in the eastern DRC;

    2. Strongly condemns the occupation of Goma and other territories in the eastern DRC by M23 and the RDF as an unacceptable breach of the DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity; urges the Rwandan Government to withdraw its troops from DRC territory, the presence of whom is a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter, and cease cooperation with the M23 rebels; demands that Rwanda and all other potential state actors in the region cease their support for M23;

    3. Calls for an immediate and effective ceasefire, and for the full implementation of diplomatic agreements, including the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes;

    4. Is appalled by the shocking use of sexual violence against women and girls as a tool of repression and a weapon of war in the eastern DRC, and by the unacceptable recruitment of child soldiers by the various rebel groups; demands that these matters be addressed by the international community without delay; reiterates strongly that any attack against UN-mandated forces is inexcusable and might be considered a war crime;

    5. Calls for an immediate end to the violence, particularly the mass killings and the use of rape as a strategic weapon of war; calls on the DRC and Rwanda to investigate and appropriately prosecute those responsible for war crimes, including targeted attacks against Christian and all other religious communities and places of worship;

    6. Calls on the DRC Government to implement security sector reforms, intensify its efforts to prevent further atrocities against civilians and end its support for and collaboration with abusive armed groups, including ensuring the full protection of religious communities and their places of worship; urges the DRC Government to ensure accountability for human rights violations and prosecute those responsible for attacks; urges the DRC Government to address and prevent hate speech and incitement, including the involvement of officials in such acts, and hate-motivated acts of violence or intimidation;

    7. Calls on the Commission and the Member States to increase humanitarian aid to address the urgent needs of displaced persons and vulnerable communities in the DRC, ensuring safe access to food, medical care and shelter;

    8. Supports the imposition of further targeted EU sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for financing or engaging in violence, human rights abuses and resource exploitation; calls on the Council to implement and expand these sanctions by targeting all responsible entities and individuals, including Major General Emmy K. Ruvusha, Commander of the Rwanda Security Forces, identified in the June 2023 report of the UN Group of Experts;

    9. Calls for stricter enforcement of EU regulations on conflict minerals to prevent illicit trade from fuelling armed groups in the DRC; calls once again on the Commission to suspend the Memorandum of Understanding with Rwanda and to suspend its support for all projects associated with the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, as such projects could lead to direct or indirect support for human rights violations in the eastern DRC; requests that the Commission share detailed mapping of current projects with Rwandan authorities and its assessment of whether they may contribute to or fail to address human rights violations either inside Rwanda or in the DRC;

    10. Calls on the Commission and the European External Action Service to intensify diplomatic efforts by working closely with regional partners, including the African Union, the East African Community and the United Nations, in order to step up diplomatic efforts to achieve a sustainable resolution to the conflict;

    11. Expresses concern over reports of foreign interference exacerbating the conflict and calls for an independent investigation into allegations of external support for armed groups;

    12. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Governments and Parliaments of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the African Union and other relevant international bodies.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Election diary: Energy is in the foreground – but climate change is ‘in the shadows’

    This election is already shaping up as very much about energy. But notably, ambitions for and debate about combatting climate change have receded in recent times.

    Peter Dutton has his proposal for an east coast gas reservation scheme at the centre of his campaign. Then of course there is that much-contested nuclear policy. But the government has declined to produce a 2035 emissions reduction target before polling day and, apart from its commitment to net zero by 2050, the Coalition won’t talk targets in opposition.

    John Connor, CEO of the Carbon Marketing Institute, says “probably not since 2004 has climate been so much in the shadows, at least at this stage”. It’s a matter of the “energy wars” rather than the “climate wars” so far, he says.

    The climate change issue was potent in 2022, especially in helping the “teal” candidates get elected. It probably is still cutting through in their sort of seats. And climate change demonstrators are targeting election events.

    But more generally, things have changed.

    The Freshwater poll in the Australian Financial Review on Monday asked people to list three issues of top concern for them.

    Unsurprisingly, cost of living was a mile ahead of anything else, at 74%. Then came housing (37%), healthcare (27%), economy (26%), crime (25%) and tax (19%). Climate change followed seventh, with 18%, ahead of immigration (15%) and defence (13%).

    When asked who would be best to respond to concern about climate change, Labor held a solid lead, 35% to the 22% who nominated the Coalition, but 43% said neither or were unsure.

    The Morgan poll early this year compared issues of most importance to people in the September quarter of 2024 and the June quarter of 2022. Just under a third nominated global warming and climate change in 2022 (32%); by 2024 this was down to less than a quarter (23%).

    The cost-of-living crisis is the most obvious reason why climate change has faded in many voters’ minds. That has pushed almost everything else aside, as families struggle with financial practicalities.

    (The Carbon Market Institute says, however, that polling it commissioned, to be released later this week does show the public understand the link between climate change and the cost of living, even if the politicians are reluctant to go there just now. 62% of respondents agreed impacts of climate change – such as more frequent and severe bushfires and flooding – worsen the cost of living through insurance cost increases and grocery prices, with just 13% disagreeing.)

    Now we are deeply into the transition to a clean economy the inevitable downsides are more to the fore. However necessary, they are painful, including high power bills (that have had to be subsidised by the government) and local arguments about transmission lines and wind farms blighting parts of the landscape.

    After it was elected Labor highlighted the importance of climate change by legislating its 2030 43% emissions reduction target. But it has become reticent when asked to talk about the 2035 target for Australia.

    That was initially due to be submitted under the Paris agreement by February, but now it won’t be announced until closer to the September deadline. Nor will the Climate Change Authority, headed by former NSW Liberal treasurer Matt Kean, produce its recommendation to the government before the election. The government’s explanation for its delay is that it can’t act before the the authority’s recommendation.

    Dutton remains committed to the Paris agreement and the zero emissions by 2050 target. But he flagged at the weekend that he would not proceed with Australia’s bid to host COP31 in 2026.

    The opposition says it would keep the safeguards mechanism that regulates emissions from large emitters, but we don’t know what changes it would make to it.

    Nor do we know what would happen under a Dutton government to the various framework institutions around climate change policy. But Kean and his authority are certainly in the gun sights. Opposition finance spokeswoman Jane Hume has said, “I don’t think that we could possibly maintain a Climate Change Authority that has been so badly politicised”.

    What is it about some modern conservative leaders and The Lodge?

    Peter Dutton on Monday declared that, if he became PM, he would live at Kirribilli House, not The Lodge.

    “We love Sydney, we love the harbour, it’s a great city, and so yes. You’ve got the choice between Kirribilli or living in Canberra. I think I’ll take Sydney any day over living in Canberra,” he said.

    The opposition leader’s disdain for Canberra was obvious. Then again, perhaps when you’re planning to get rid of tens of thousands of Canberra-based public servants, Kirilly Dutton might find a browse around the Manuka shops potentially awkward.

    From the way he extolled the virtues of Sydney, it doesn’t seem that Dutton wishes he could stay in his home city of Brisbane, prevented from doing so only by the lack of an official residence there.

    As prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull didn’t just stay living in Sydney – he chose to remain in his own house. It was certainly more glam than The Lodge.

    Yet The Lodge was good enough for the leader to whom the Liberals all pay homage. Robert Menzies and his family lived there quite happily for a very long time. Menzies’ daughter Heather Henderson, in her book A Smile for My Parents, tells of life in the bush capital, when her mother kept a shanghai in the wisteria to take potshots at the currawongs.

    They were simpler days. The security-conscious Dutton would be appalled at the anecdote about the intruder who appeared one night in the Lodge kitchen. Pattie Menzies, who happened to be carving the roast for dinner at the time, walked into the kitchen, armed with the knife. The intruder fled. There was no official inquiry – just a reprimand for the maid for not snibbing the door.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: OPDC Announces Hemiko as development and funding partner for innovative New Heat Network

    The Mayor of London’s development corporation for Old Oak and Park Royal (OPDC) has today announced that Hemiko has been chosen as the development partner for its innovative new district heat network. 

    OPDC and Hemiko will work together in partnership to design, deliver, fund and operate the new low carbon heat network, which will draw waste heat from local data centres, providing low-cost, low carbon energy to over 9,000 new homes and businesses in the Old Oak and Park Royal area, as well as existing buildings including Central Middlesex Hospital. Using waste heat from data centre cooling systems in this way is a UK first that positions London at the forefront of the UK’s transition to a low carbon, circular economy, whilst driving the growth of the UK tech sector. 

    Hemiko is a leading heat network utility provider that develops, builds, funds and operates urban heat networks for commercial, residential and mixed-use developments across the UK, including the Greenwich Peninsula regeneration project in London and they are currently building a new network in Worthing. 

    The first phase of OPDC’s heat network is expected to deliver up to 95GWh of heat a year, the equivalent of boiling around 1 billion kettles. The network will expand over five phases between 2028 and 2040, serving the wider Old Oak and Park Royal regeneration area, London’s largest new development project, with plans to build up to 25,000 homes over the next two decades. 

    In November 2023, OPDC was awarded £36m from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund and in October 2024, Old Oak and Park Royal was announced as one the UK’s first heat network zones – areas designated by the Government where heat networks will provide the lowest cost, low carbon heating option. 

    The Mayor of London’s Local Energy Accelerator (LEA) programme, which was co-funded by the Mayor and the European Regional Development Fund, and the Mayor’s Green Finance programme, have provided an additional £1.7m to fund the technical and commercialisation work to develop the commercial case for the network. 

    This will now be bolstered by Hemiko who will invest £63m in the first phases, growing to around £600m by 2040, boosting economic growth and creating local jobs in West London. 

    OPDC’s heat network will eventually serve London’s largest Opportunity Area, benefitting new and existing communities living and working in the new urban district being created at Old Oak and Park Royal. As well as many thousands of new and affordable homes, plans include around 3 million sq ft of new commercial, retail and leisure development, high-quality parks and green space, and community services and facilities, all within walking distance of the new HS2 station at Old Oak Common, where HS2, Elizabeth line and Great Western Main Line services will operate.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Why have supermarkets around Australia recalled bagged salad products? A gastroenterologist explains

    People are being asked to check the use-by dates of bagged salad products they’ve purchased recently after a number of Australian supermarkets issued recalls due to potential bacterial contamination.

    Recalls issued over the past week have affected bagged and pre-packaged salad products sold at supermarkets around the country including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA.

    The potential contaminant is shiga-toxin-producing E. coli or STEC. But so far, no cases of illness have been reported.

    So what is this bacterium and how could it affect the salad leaves in your dinner or lunch?

    E.Coli and STEC

    Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium that normally lives in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Fortunately most strains of E. coli are harmless and don’t cause symptoms.

    But there are certain strains that can lead to symptoms such as abdominal cramping, diarrhoea, fever and vomiting. In some cases a severe infection can even result in kidney failure.

    STEC is one strain that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. It’s called “shiga toxin-producing” because the toxin from this strain of E. coli is very similar to that produced by the Shigella bacterium.

    Shigella causes shigellosis, a gastrointestinal infection which can involve similar symptoms to STEC. Both can cause abdominal cramping, bloody diarrhoea, fever and vomiting.

    Most people recover within ten days of the onset of symptoms. People suffering from STEC infection should stay hydrated and seek medical care if symptoms are serious or don’t resolve.

    E. coli normally lives in our bodies without causing harm. But some strains can make us sick.

    How common is it?

    One estimate suggests at least 2.8 million STEC infections occur globally every year.

    In general STEC infections in Australia are very rare with less than four people per million affected annually.

    The diagnosis of STEC infection is made by testing a sample of a person’s stool for the presence of the bacterium.

    Children under five, adults aged over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk of STEC infection and of getting very sick with it.

    Why are bagged salads often a culprit?

    The current recalls are not the first time bagged salads have been subject to food safety issues in Australia or elsewhere. These products can be vulnerable to bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.

    Contamination in bagged salads can occur at various stages, from farm to table. It can begin early during growing when leafy greens can be exposed to bacteria from contaminated water, soil or manure.

    During harvesting, handling and processing, cross-contamination can happen if the equipment or surfaces are not properly disinfected. Finally, packaging can contribute to contamination if it comes into contact with contaminated surfaces or hands.

    The current outbreak

    Health authorities sometimes test for the presence of food-borne bacteria by culturing bacteria from packaged foods in the lab as part of a proactive public health surveillance program.

    If they identify the presence of concerning food-borne bacteria they will work with retailers to undertake recalls of that food product as a precaution to protect public health.

    To date there have been no cases of illness linked to the current recalls. The presence of STEC doesn’t necessarily mean people will get sick from eating the salad product, but this is an early detection aimed to prevent food-borne illness.

    Members of the public have been urged not to consume any of the recalled products, and to throw them away or return them to where they bought them for a refund. Anyone who has consumed the products and has health concerns should seek medical advice.

    Washed and ready to eat?

    Many bagged salad products come with a selling point along the lines of “washed and ready to eat”. Given the current recalls, you might ask whether it really is safe to eat pre-packaged salads without giving the leaves a wash yourself.

    Unfortunately, research shows using tap water to wash bagged leafy salads isn’t effective in removing bacteria. But washing your raw vegetables is still helpful in getting rid of any clinging dirt that may contain clumps of bacteria.

    Fortunately the risk of getting sick from eating bagged lettuce is generally very low. It’s also important to wash your hands before handling food, check the expiry dates of bagged salads and pay attention to health alerts.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Hosting the UN climate summit is far from ‘madness’ – here’s how Australia stands to benefit

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton would withdraw Australia’s bid to co-host next year’s global climate summit if the Coalition wins the federal election.

    Australia has lobbied hard for the right to host the talks, known as COP31, in conjunction with Pacific nations. Australia has emerged as a leading contender, and has the backing of most countries in its United Nations grouping, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and New Zealand.

    However, Dutton on Sunday described the idea of hosting the UN climate conference as “not something we are supporting — it is madness”. He also falsely claimed it would cost Australia “tens of billions” of dollars to host the event.

    Australia would reap big benefits by hosting the high-profile global talks. It would likely attract considerable investment in renewables and clean energy export industries, and strengthen Australia’s national security during a time of increasing geo-strategic competition in the Pacific. To pull out now would be a costly move.

    Decison deferred until June

    The decision on who will host COP31 in 2026 was expected at last year’s summit in Azerbaijan. But it was deferred until June this year – after Australia’s next federal election.

    Hosting rights are shared between five UN country groupings on a rotational basis. The final decision is made by consensus.

    Australia’s bid to host with Pacific nations has considerable support. But Turkey, the only other country in the running to host COP31, has so far resisted lobbying efforts to persuade it to drop out.

    An economic boost for Australia

    Hosting the UN climate talks is a massive economic opportunity for Australia.

    COP31 would be one of the biggest diplomatic summits Australia has ever hosted. Tens of thousands of people could be expected for a fortnight of negotiations, with satellite events held across the nation and the Pacific.

    Adelaide is in the box seat to play host. The South Australian government estimated hosting the UN talks could generate more than A$500 million for the state. But economic benefits would be much wider, and longer-lasting, than tourism receipts from those attending. The talks are a chance to attract investment for Australia’s energy transition and for clean energy industries of the future, including critical minerals and green iron.

    The UK government’s assessment of the value of hosting the UN climate summit in Glasgow in 2021 found the net economic benefit was double that spent – around A$1 billion. That includes benefits from trade deals and foreign investment. With abundant critical minerals, and excellent wind and solar resources, Australia has even more to gain.

    Hosting the world’s largest climate summit is a chance to attract the investment needed to replace ageing and unreliable coal-fired power stations. According to the Clean Energy Investor Group, which represents the capital behind large-scale renewables, more than 70% of the investment in clean energy comes from international sources.

    Dutton says he plans to replace coal with nuclear power (and to rely on gas until nuclear plants are built decades from now). The Coalition’s nuclear plan would require hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer support.

    Securing our place in the Pacific

    Working with Pacific nations to address climate change is key to Australian national security.

    Australia aims to be the security partner of choice for Pacific island countries. And Pacific island countries are crystal clear: climate change is their “single greatest threat”.

    Walking away from the chance to host the world and showcase our clean energy future would be costly indeed.

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton would withdraw Australia’s bid to co-host next year’s global climate summit if the Coalition wins the federal election.

    Australia has lobbied hard for the right to host the talks, known as COP31, in conjunction with Pacific nations. Australia has emerged as a leading contender, and has the backing of most countries in its United Nations grouping, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and New Zealand.

    However, Dutton on Sunday described the idea of hosting the UN climate conference as “not something we are supporting — it is madness”. He also falsely claimed it would cost Australia “tens of billions” of dollars to host the event.

    Australia would reap big benefits by hosting the high-profile global talks. It would likely attract considerable investment in renewables and clean energy export industries, and strengthen Australia’s national security during a time of increasing geo-strategic competition in the Pacific. To pull out now would be a costly move.

    Decison deferred until June

    The decision on who will host COP31 in 2026 was expected at last year’s summit in Azerbaijan. But it was deferred until June this year – after Australia’s next federal election.

    Hosting rights are shared between five UN country groupings on a rotational basis. The final decision is made by consensus.

    Australia’s bid to host with Pacific nations has considerable support. But Turkey, the only other country in the running to host COP31, has so far resisted lobbying efforts to persuade it to drop out.

    An economic boost for Australia

    Hosting the UN climate talks is a massive economic opportunity for Australia.

    COP31 would be one of the biggest diplomatic summits Australia has ever hosted. Tens of thousands of people could be expected for a fortnight of negotiations, with satellite events held across the nation and the Pacific.

    Adelaide is in the box seat to play host. The South Australian government estimated hosting the UN talks could generate more than A$500 million for the state. But economic benefits would be much wider, and longer-lasting, than tourism receipts from those attending. The talks are a chance to attract investment for Australia’s energy transition and for clean energy industries of the future, including critical minerals and green iron.

    The UK government’s assessment of the value of hosting the UN climate summit in Glasgow in 2021 found the net economic benefit was double that spent – around A$1 billion. That includes benefits from trade deals and foreign investment. With abundant critical minerals, and excellent wind and solar resources, Australia has even more to gain.

    Hosting the world’s largest climate summit is a chance to attract the investment needed to replace ageing and unreliable coal-fired power stations. According to the Clean Energy Investor Group, which represents the capital behind large-scale renewables, more than 70% of the investment in clean energy comes from international sources.

    Dutton says he plans to replace coal with nuclear power (and to rely on gas until nuclear plants are built decades from now). The Coalition’s nuclear plan would require hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer support.

    Securing our place in the Pacific

    Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, chaired the third meeting of Group of Ministers constituted for addressing issues related to viability of electricity distribution utilities in Lucknow today.

    Shri A. K Sharma, Energy Minister, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Gottipati Ravi Kumar, Energy Minister, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Pradyuman Singh Tomar, Energy Minister, Madhya Pradesh, Smt. Meghana Sakore Bordikar, Minister of State for Energy, Maharashtra and Shri Somendra Tomar, Minister of State for Energy, Uttar Pradesh attended the meeting. The meeting was also attended by senior officials from Central Government, State Governments, State Power Utilities of Member States, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) Ltd and REC Ltd.

    In his opening remarks, Union Minister of State welcomed Energy Ministers from the Member States and thanked Energy Minister, Uttar Pradesh, for hosting the meeting. He highlighted about the discussions held during the first two meetings of the GoM and the collective efforts required from the member States for improvement of power distribution sector. He highlighted the need for designing a mechanism for financial restructuring of liabilities of distribution utilities, lowering interest burden on utilities, development of storage solutions, facilitating daytime power supply for agriculture to lower the overall power purchase costs and reduce subsidy burdens.

    The Minister also highlighted the need for implementing AI and digital innovations and need for ensuring cost-reflective tariffs for financial viability of power sector. He added that implementing these measures shall help utilities improve the financial sustainability. He also emphasized the need for a scheme similar to UDAY.

    In his address Energy Minister, Uttar Pradesh thanked the Union Minister of State for having the 3rd meeting of the Group of Ministers in Lucknow.  He highlighted the achievements of the State of Uttar Pradesh in the power sector including adoption of RE technologies. He commended that the measures taken by the Government of India will have far reaching impact on making country’s distribution sector stronger and healthier. He emphasised on the need for expeditious growth of renewable sources of energy coupled with energy storage solutions so as to meet the future challenges of energy transition and growing power demand. Hon’ble Minister mentioned about the importance of the Government of India’s role in aiding human resources development for achieving better outputs.

    Joint Secretary (Distribution), Ministry of Power, GoI made a presentation highlighting key areas of intervention identified during first two meetings of the GoM and proposed measures to be taken by the stakeholders (Central Govt., State Govts. and Regulatory Commissions) to address the viability concern for deliberation.

    TATA power distribution, Odisha, as a special invitee, shared the best practices adopted and their journey toward making their DISCOMs profitable.

    The member States actively participated in the meeting and presented the overview of State DISCOMs. They gave valuable suggestions for improving the financial condition of DISCOMs. States of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu made presentations on the subject.

    The contours of the Action plan identifying the ways to reduce the outstanding debts and losses of the distribution utilities and the means to bring them into profits, were discussed in detail.

    Emphasis was placed on the need for review of regulators’ performance for determining tariffs. The support from Government of India for Privatisation initiatives by State was suggested. The need for regulators to adapt to the latest developments in the sector including the current levels of RE integration, the requirements of capacity building and O&M costs, while finalizing the tariff, was also discussed. It was discussed that delays in payment of Government department dues and subsidies are forcing DISCOMs to resort to working capital loans, which are not being passed on in tariff. There are also delays in passing on of Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustments in tariffs thus creating need for working capital which are not considered in Annual Revenue Requirements of the Utilities. To avoid future tariff shocks, it was suggested to link tariffs to annual inflation-linked tariff hike.

    The Group of Ministers reiterated its commitment and expressed resolve to take necessary measures for improving the financial viability of DISCOMs.

    In his Closing remarks, the Hon’ble Union Minister of State emphasized on the need for States to demonstrate greater political will and determination to make the power sector viable and urged the member States to work upon the ideas that have emerged during the meeting. It was recommended to invite All India DISCOM Association (AIDA) to the next GoM meeting for their suggestions.

    It was also unanimously decided to have 4th meeting of GoM in Andhra Pradesh in the month of April.

    April 1 used to be a day when workers could count on a pay rise with stronger support for those doing it tough, but that’s not the case under this Government.

    “April 1 is now a painful reminder of how much more Kiwi families are being forced to pay,” Labour jobs and incomes spokesperson Ginny Andersen said.

    “This Government has made a series of choices that have left New Zealanders worse off. Jobs are being cut, wages are falling behind, and support for struggling families is being scaled back. Times are tough for a lot of families, with the Government’s choices making it even tougher.”

    Here’s just some of the ways this Government is stripping away support for New Zealanders:

    • The minimum wage will rise by a measly 35 cents, well below inflation. This means tens of thousands of workers are effectively taking a pay cut.
    • Electricity lines charges are increasing, driving up power bills by an average of $10 a month, just as we head into winter. In some regions, the increase could be as high as $25.
    • Student loan interest rates for overseas borrowers are jumping to 4.9%, hitting young Kiwis hard who are trying to make ends meet
    • Jobseekers have increased by almost 22,000 people in the past 12 months alone
    • Māori and Pasifika whanau have it worse, with unemployment figures almost double that of the general rate

    “Meanwhile, National is prioritising landlords over hard-working Kiwi families by letting landlords claim a 100% mortgage interest deduction, a $2.9 billion tax cut. That’s money that could have gone to lifting wages, funding school lunches, or expanding access to public housing but instead it’s going to wealthy property investors,” Ginny Andersen said.

    “The jump in jobseekers in the past year is an utter indictment on this Government’s policies,” Labour social development spokesperson Willie Jackson said.

    “Under Labour, April 1 meant higher wages and more support for those doing it tough. Under National, April 1 has turned into a day workers and struggling families dread,” Willie Jackson said.

  • MIL-OSI China: China discovers major oilfield in South China Sea

    The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced on Monday that it has discovered a major oilfield in the eastern South China Sea, with proven reserves exceeding 100 million tonnes.
    The newly discovered Huizhou 19-6 oilfield marks a breakthrough in China’s offshore oil exploration, as it is the country’s first large-scale integrated clastic oilfield discovered in deep to ultra-deep layers, CNOOC said.
    Situated about 170 km from Shenzhen in south China’s Guangdong Province, the oilfield sits at an average water depth of 100 meters. Test drilling has yielded a daily production of 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas, demonstrating its potential.
    According to the company, offshore oil and gas exploration in deep to ultra-deep layers faces multiple challenges, including high temperatures, high pressures, and complex conditions.
    Meanwhile, clastic reservoirs, an important component of deep-sea hydrocarbon deposits, generally have low permeability, making the identification of large oil and gas fields more difficult.
    Peng Guangrong, a geologist at CNOOC’s Shenzhen branch, noted that 60 percent of the world’s newly discovered oil and gas reserves have come from deep layers. With abundant resources and a low level of exploration, deep to ultra-deep layers are expected to drive future growth in oil and gas reserves and production.
    China’s oil and gas exploration in the eastern South China Sea has seen consecutive breakthroughs, with oilfields exceeding 100 million tonnes in reserves discovered for two straight years, said CNOOC’s CEO Zhou Xinhuai.

    The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, an innovation pillar empowering China’s smart manufacturing, green transition and even breakthroughs in space sciences, is proving to be a key driver of the nation’s high-quality growth, noted international industry experts at a key forum.

    Under the wave of the explosion of AI technology, 2025 will be the first year of large-scale AI application implementation,” said Kai-Fu Lee, CEO of 01.AI and chairman of Sinovation Ventures at the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference in Beijing.

    Large models have brought about a revolution in productivity, he said, adding that their intelligence continues to improve with the constant emergence of new technologies, marking the advent of an era characterized by large model applications.

    A defining application trend showcased at the event is the convergence of AI and new energy vehicles (NEVs), which represents a strategic priority in China’s carbon neutrality roadmap. This synergy was epitomized by Li Auto’s intelligent driving demonstration, which has captured considerable attention within the industry.

    All-scenario navigation assist driving feature developed by the company enables vehicles to autonomously change lanes and overtake, enter or exit ramps, pass intersections in response to traffic lights, and avoid or detour around roadwork obstacles. It has made it easier to drive safely on highways and drive proficiently on urban roads, the company said.

    The automotive industry has entered a transformative era of intelligence, marking an evolution from mere transportation tools to AI terminals, said Li Xiang, the CEO of the company.

    At the exhibition venue, nearly 100 robots from 15 companies are actively engaged throughout the event to enhance the experience of the attendees. More importantly, they showcase how humanoid robots are rapidly advancing to boost productivity and expand their real-world applications.

    A humanoid robot named “Adam” amazed visitors with an elegant dance during the conference, showcasing its advanced full-body motion control. Through the fusion of unique hardware design and reinforcement learning, the development team has enabled Adam to coordinate joint movements precisely, achieving human-like agility and flexibility, explained Anna Leung, brand director of Adam’s developer, PNDbotics AI Co., Ltd.

    “The most exciting era for humanoid robots, the era of productivity, is about to begin,” said Wang He, founder and CTO of Beijing Galbot Co., Ltd. The ability of humanoid robots to integrate vision-driven guidance, limb control, and generalized autonomous operation truly makes them valuable assistants to humans, said Wang.

    In the 2025 government work report, China vowed to effectively combine digital technologies with its manufacturing and market strengths. It will support the extensive application of large-scale AI models and develop new-generation intelligent terminals and smart manufacturing equipment, including intelligent connected NEVs and intelligent robots.

    As China steadily advances toward its dual carbon goals, fast-developing AI technologies also contribute significantly with their applications in sectors such as new energy integration, energy production and smart energy consumption, according to industry experts.

    For instance, AI plays an important role in the construction of a new type of power system. By enhancing smart grid regulation and source-grid-load-storage coordination, it addresses grid stability and security challenges as the renewable energy penetration rate continues to rise, according to Ren Jingdong, deputy director of the National Energy Administration.

    Wang Chi, director of National Space Science Center under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that AI will play a critical role in future interplanetary exploration, as spacecraft control systems need to be more intelligent for more distant solar exploration, particularly Mars and Jupiter.

    Sending humans to the destinations entails unacceptable hazards, but deploying intelligent agents and robotic systems for preliminary exploration would be able to reduce risks in extreme exploration scenarios, said Liu Hangxin, co-executive director at the frontier research center at the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence.

    Amid the downward pressure on the global economy, China, Japan and ROK, as major regional and global economies, have to make joint efforts to safeguard free trade and multilateral trading system, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and advance regional economic integration, said Wang at the 13th China-Japan-ROK Trilateral Economic and Trade Ministers’ Meeting held in Seoul on Sunday.

    The trilateral meeting, focused on topics such as strengthening trade and investment collaboration and advancing regional and multilateral cooperation, was co-chaired by Wang Wentao, ROK’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-geun, and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoji Muto.

    President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed five proclamations – two new and three amendments – authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration in the affairs of the National Skills Fund and the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.  

    In addition, the President has amended existing proclamations to expand the scope of investigations into the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Eskom, PetroSA, Transnet, South African Airways (SAA), the Department of Human Settlements, Alexkor, and the South African Council for Educators (SACE). 

    In a statement on Friday, the SIU said these investigations aim to recover financial losses suffered by the State. 

    National Skills Fund 

    “Proclamation 253 of 2025 authorises the SIU to investigate allegations of serious maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct by officials or employees of the Department of Higher Education and Training, and the possible mismanagement of funds allocated to the National Skills Fund (NSF),” the SIU said. 

    The investigation will focus on procurement and contracting for the implementation of skills development programmes, training projects, and the appointment of implementing agents for the following projects: 

    • Yikhonolakho Woman and Youth Primary Co-operative Limited (NSF 16/1/3/21)
    • Dithipe Development Institute (Pty) Limited
    • Dzunde Farming Co-operative Limited – Rural Development
    • Dual System Apprenticeship Pilot Project – Port Elizabeth TVET College (NSF10/3/8/2/9)
    • Rubicon Communication CC
    • Centre for Education Policy Development (Fruitless & Wasteful Expenditure) — NSF 16/2/1/2 & NSF 10/4/4/3

    The scope of the investigation includes any unlawful or improper conduct by suppliers, service providers, and other involved parties, occurring between 1 January 2013 and 28 March 2025, or related matters before or after this period.

    National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure 

    Proclamation 256 of 2025 authorises the SIU to investigate allegations of maladministration in the affairs of the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) relating to the appointment of travel agents in 2017 for the rendering of travel agency services, including flights, accommodation, and vehicle hire. 

    “The investigation will determine whether these appointments and related payments were conducted in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable, or cost-effective; contrary to applicable legislation; or inconsistent with Treasury instructions, departmental manuals, policies, procedures, or other applicable prescripts. 

    “The SIU will also investigate any unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, or wasteful expenditure incurred by the Department and any unlawful or improper conduct by officials, employees, service providers, or any other parties involved in the procurement of these services,” the SIU said. 

    The SIU added that the scope of the investigation includes any unlawful or improper conduct by suppliers, service providers, and other involved parties, occurring between 1 March 2017 and 28 March 2025, or related matters before or after this period. 

    Amendment of Proclamation No. R.206 of 2024 

    Proclamation 252 of 2025 amends Proclamation R.206 of 2024 to reflect the full scope of the SIU’s investigation into several state institutions. 

    The amendment corrects and clarifies the entities under investigation, which include the South African Broadcasting Corporation SOC Limited (SABC), Eskom Holdings SOC Limited, the Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa SOC Limited (PetroSA), Transnet SOC Limited, South African Airways SOC Limited (SAA), and the National Department of Human Settlements (formerly known as the National Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation). 

    The amendment substitutes the heading and paragraph 1 of the original Proclamation to formally add South African Airways as a state institution which will be subjected to an investigation of allegations of serious maladministration, corruption, and unlawful conduct in the affairs of these state institutions. 

    Amendment of Alexkor investigation to include additional institutions and broader scope 

    Proclamation 254 of 2025 amends Proclamation R.45 of 2021 to broaden the scope of the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) investigation beyond Alexkor SOC Limited. 

    The amendment now includes the Alexkor Richtersveld Mining Company Pooling and Sharing Joint Venture and the State Diamond Trader—collectively referred to as “the Institutions.” The amendment updates several references throughout the original Proclamation to reflect this expanded scope. 

    “The amended Proclamation authorises the SIU to investigate the procurement of and contracting for goods or services by or on behalf of the Institutions in relation to the marketing, valuation, sale (including decisions not to buy), and beneficiation of diamonds, and any income generated or lost, or payments made in respect thereof. 

    “The investigation will consider whether such conduct was contrary to applicable legislation, Treasury instructions, or the Institutions’ own policies and procedures,” the SIU said. 

    The SIU will also probe serious maladministration in the affairs of Alexkor SOC Limited in respect of contracts concluded with, and fees paid to, Regiments Capital (Pty) Limited. 

    The SIU will also investigate any related unauthorised, irregular, or fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred by the Institutions, as well as fraudulent, irregular, improper, or unlawful conduct by Board members, officials, employees, agents, service providers, traders, auctioneers, bidders, or buyers—particularly where such conduct resulted in undue benefit or concealed interests. 

    In addition, the Proclamation authorises the SIU to probe serious maladministration in the affairs of the institutions in respect of agreements or contracts with service providers and other diamond trade actors and specifically empowers the SIU to investigate contracts concluded with and fees paid to Regiments Capital (Pty) Limited by Alexkor SOC Limited. 

    The amended scope covers conduct occurring between 1 January 2014 (previously 1 October 2016) and the date of publication of this Proclamation and includes related matters outside this period if they are relevant to the investigation. 

    “Beyond investigating maladministration, corruption, and fraud, the SIU will identify systemic failures and recommend measures to prevent future losses.” 

    In accordance with the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act 74 of 1996 (SIU Act), the SIU will refer any evidence of criminal conduct uncovered during these investigations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action. 

    The SIU is also empowered to institute civil action in the High Court or a Special Tribunal to recover financial losses to the State resulting from acts of corruption, fraud or maladministration. – SAnews.gov.za

    The Ministry of Ayush has taken initiative for World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Collaborative Centre for Traditional Medicines at Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar and Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi, and National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad, a unit under Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), New Delhi. ITRA is running an International Centre of Ayurveda Studies (ICAS) centre to promote Ayurveda as a key component of global healthcare systems.

    The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) in Jamnagar would emerge as a Centre of global wellness; bolster evidence-based research, training and awareness for Traditional Medicine. It will serve as a key knowledge hub for evidence-based Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) on a global scale. This is the first and only global out posted Centre (Office) for traditional medicine across the world.

    With regard to enhance international collaboration in Ayurveda through various forums, the Ministry of Ayush has developed a Central Sector Scheme (CSS) for the Promotion of International Cooperation (IC) in Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy (AYUSH) under which the Ministry of Ayush provides support to Indian Ayush drug Manufacturers/ Ayush Service providers to give boost to the export of AYUSH products & services; facilitates the International promotion, development and recognition of Ayush system of medicine; foster interaction of stakeholders and market development of Ayush at international level; promote academics and research through the establishment of Ayush Academic Chairs in foreign countries and holding training workshop/symposiums for promoting and strengthening awareness and interest about Ayush Systems of Medicine at international level. Under various components of the CSS IC Scheme, the Ministry of Ayush supports AYUSH entrepreneurs, Ayush drug manufacturing industry, Ayush Health Care providers etc. Participation/ organization of International exhibitions/ conferences/ workshops/ seminars/ road shows/ trade fairs, etc. in India and abroad by the Ministry of Ayush through Indian Mission/ Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)/ Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI)/ India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO)/ Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM)/ Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), etc.

    The Ministry of Ayush has supported various international events/ conferences/ seminars/ workshops etc. organized by various organizations including World Ayurveda Congress to enhance international collaboration in Ayurveda.

    The Ministry of Ayush has taken various steps to integrate Ayurveda with modern medical practices to address contemporary health challenges through the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Ayush Vertical. The Ayush Vertical under DGHS, established by the Ministry of Ayush and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), serves as a dedicated institutional mechanism for planning, monitoring, and supervising Ayush-specific public health programs. This vertical provides technical support to both Ministries in developing strategies for public health, healthcare, Ayush education, and training. The Ministry of Ayush and MoHFW have jointly established Integrated Ayush Departments in Central Government Hospitals to promote integrative healthcare. As part of this initiative, the Department of Integrative Medicine has been set up and is operational at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

    Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences(CCRAS), as the apex body of research in Ayurveda, has undertaken research projects on the treatment of various diseases in collaboration with modern institutions to promote the integration of Ayurveda with the modern system of medicine.

    CCRAS has undertaken various research studies to examine the benefits and feasibility of integration of Ayurveda through the following research projects for integration of Ayurveda with modern system of medicine:

    1. Operational study to explore the feasibility of integrating Ayurveda with modern system of medicine in a tertiary care hospital (Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi) for the management of Osteoarthritis (Knee). The study has been completed.
    2. Feasibility of introducing Indian System of Medicine (Ayurveda) in the National Reproductive and Child Health services at Primary Health Care (PHC) level” in Himachal Pradesh. The study has been completed.
    3. Integration of AYUSH systems in the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS). The study has been completed.
    4. Feasibility of introducing Ayurveda Intervention in Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) in PHCs of Selected district (Gadchiroli) of Maharashtra (Effectiveness of Ayurvedic intervention for Ante-Natal care (Garbhini Paricharya) at Primary Health Care level: A Multi Centre Operational Study.
    5. Further, under the Extramural Research Programme, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) under Ministry of Ayush has taken an initiative to set up Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research (AI-ACIHR), at AIIMS to conduct research on identified areas focusing on integrative healthcare. Under this program, four research areas in four AIIMS have been identified, which are as follows:
      1. AIIMS Delhi:
        1. Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Gastro-intestinal Disorders
        2. Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Women and Child Health
      2. AIIMS- Jodhpur: Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Geriatric Health
      3. AIIMS Nagpur: Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Cancer Care
      4. AIIMS Rishikesh: Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Geriatric Health.

    Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ayush encourages Post Graduate (PG) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scholars and faculty researchers to collaborate with modern medical faculty to ensure Ayurveda’s efficacy and relevance in modern healthcare. Since 2019, 25 integrative researches have been undertaken.

    The Ministry of Ayush, developed the Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of International Cooperation for AYUSH (IC Scheme). The details are provided at Point (a)&(b)

    The Ministry also implements the CSS Scheme for Promotion of Information Education and Communication (IEC) in Ayush to create awareness regarding Ayush Systems of Medicine including Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy system of medicine. This aims to reach out to all sections of the population across the country. This scheme provides assistance for organizing National/State Arogya Fairs, Yoga fests/ Utsavs, Ayurveda Parvs, etc. The Ministry also undertakes Multi-Media, Print Media Campaigns for creating awareness about Ayush Systems.

    The Ministry of Ayush, through Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), an Institute of National Importance, organizes various public participatory programs on regular basis to increase public awareness and acceptance of Ayurvedic practices domestically.

    North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) has taken various steps for health awareness among citizen in rural areas. NEIAH has opened a Peripheral Outpatient Department (OPD) in Ayurveda and Homoeopathy OPD at Smit areas, East Khasi Hills district of the State of Meghalaya to promote Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. The Institute also conducted a Health camps under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) programmes. The Institute regularly gives free consultation in the Institute Hospitals both OPD and In-Patient Department (IPD) and conducting free Medical & Awareness Camps at Villages, schools, Govt. Dept., Military personnel and at community levels. Organized National Seminars/worships, Panel discussions, Doctor se Mileye in All India Radio, Shillong in English, Hindi and Regional Language (Khasi), TV Talks shows on Ayurveda in Doordarshan Kendra, Shillong etc.

    For increasing awareness domestically, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) provides clinical care and engages in awareness activities to promote Ayurveda through its Information Education and Communication (IEC) Activities through its networks of 30 peripheral Institutes.

    CCRAS has been engaged in popularizing the Ayurveda system among the masses through electronic and print media for common people in English, Hindi, and regional languages, which are widely distributed through National/State level Arogya melas, Health camps, exhibitions, expos, etc., and also through CCRAS outreach programs viz. Schedule Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) Research Program, Tribal Health Care Research Program (THCRP), etc., in different states of the country through its robust 30 peripheral institutes. The Council website is also generally embodied with IEC materials and hyperlinked with other important websites that provide information for wider utility.

    The Council has three journals named Journal of Drug Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (JDRAS), Journal of Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (JRAS), and Journal of Indian Medical Heritage (JIMH) which is also available electronically in the public domain free of cost to enable dissemination of the outcomes of research among the public. The CCRAS is also publishing CCRAS Bulletin quarterly for dissemination of Research outcomes in common languages for the public. So far, the Council has published books, monographs, and technical reports, and they are being sold or distributed to disseminate research outcomes and merits of Ayurveda at large.

    To increase awareness internationally, the CCRAS under the Ministry of Ayush has signed MoU/LoI/Agreements with different countries / foreign Universities/ Institutions/ organizations to promote International cooperation for the establishment of Academic Chair.

    Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi inaugurated a state-of-the-art 5.4 GW solar cell gigafactory/manufacturing facility of Warree Energy at Chikhali in Gujarat. Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C. R. Patil, Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, senior Ministers of Gujarat such as Energy and Petrochemicals Minister Shri Kanubhai Desai;  Shri Harshbhai Sanghvi, Minister of State for Home, Sports and Youth Affairs;  Shri Mukeshbhai Patel, Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Water Resources and Shri P.P. Chaudhary were present at the occasion.

    As India’s largest state-of-the-art solar cell production plant, this landmark achievement is a decisive step towards strengthening the domestic solar supply chain and reducing dependence on imports. While the global solar energy value chain is also at the forefront of the country’s march as a net exporter and enabler in the ecosystem.

    Speaking on the occasion, The Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi said, “This magnificent facility embodies the spirit of India and stands in the form of India’s growing expertise in the global renewable energy scenario. This is in full alignment with our national vision of establishing India as a global manufacturing hub for clean energy technologies. The plant will not only cater to local needs but also position India as a major exporter of advanced solar technologies.”

    Shri Pralhad Joshi further said that today is a memorable day not only for Waaree Energy but also for Gujarat and our country. Our sacred Granthas, including the Vedas and Upanishads, have always emphasised the importance of harmony between humanity and the environment.

    Talking about the importance of Gayatri Mantra,  he said that this mantra, written thousands of years ago, is dedicated to the divine energy of the Sun. Even today crores of Indians start their day with this holy mantra. While the Sun pays respect to god through namaskar. Now that we reflect this deep spiritual tradition, it is shocking that till 2014, India had not made any progress in the areas of renewable energy and sustainability. We were nowhere to be seen on the global map of sustainability.

    Shri Pralhad Joshi said that it was only after Prime Minister Modiji assumed office in 2014 that India’s approach towards environmental sustainability began to change. We are not only participating in the global energy revolution, but we are leading it. Today, we have become the third largest renewable energy capacity in the world. In the last 10 years, there has been an extraordinary increase in the solar power capacity in the country, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to  104 GW today, showing a significant increase of 3580%.

    Shri Pralhad Joshi said that the emphasis on module production has  also increased   and its capacity has increased from 2 GW in 2014  to  80 GW today. In 2014, the production of Solar Cells and Wafers did not exist, but today India has 25 GW of cells and 2 GW of Wafers produces. To give a further boost to this, the government has issued guidelines stating that all solar PV modules used in projects will have to get their solar cells from ALM list-II starting from June 1, 2026. By 2030, this initiative will take India’s renewable energy efforts to new heights. We are confident that the production of solar modules will skyrocket and reach 150 GW by that time. Our capacity for solar cells will increase to 100 GW, with wafer production reaching 40 GW.

    He further said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi,  India co-founded the International Solar Alliance to accelerate the global development of solar energy. At present, more  than 100 countries have committed to a greener future through the ISA. For many years, a country (China) has been a powerful force in the field of renewable and new-age resources. But today India is emerging as Vishwamitra, becoming the voice of the global South and leading a new world order.

    The global is becoming the voice of the Global South and leading the new world order. He said that there are  195 countries in the world, but under the visionary leadership of PM Modi, It was India who started the One Sun, One  World, One Grid  initiative. This is the reason why, today, when the European Union College of Commissioners visits it for the first time outside the European continent, they prefer India.

    Shri Pralhad Joshi said “ Today, be it the International Energy Agency,  the World Economic Forum,  the IMF or the World Bank, all of them are looking at India as a beacon of leadership. All this has been possible due to the vision, speed and scale of our PM Modi. He is the son of this land of Gujarat, and has carried forward the legacy of leadership that this land has given us. This land gave us Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. This land has given India its entrepreneurial identity. It was in Gujarat that the growth story of renewable energy started.  It all started when Modi was the chief minister of this state. Today, Gujarat has become a model that has now been expanded across India, setting a national benchmark. In this context, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ji also deserves praise for his leadership in furthering Modiji’s vision. They are ensuring that Gujarat remains at the forefront of this crucial field. I encourage other states to adopt Gujarat’s model of development in the field of renewable energy. Other states should learn from Gujarat’s example of creating a conducive environment for industries and investing in renewable energy.”

    Union Minister Joshi pointed out that, according to the Future of Jobs Report 2025  released by the World Economic Forum, creating jobs globally in sectors such as green transition will lead to 170 million jobs by 2030. Contributing to this number will also be the significant number of jobs generated by this 5.4 GW solar cell manufacturing plant. The facility will create numerous opportunities for both local residents and professionals, he said.

    Shri Pralhad Joshi said that Gujarat is a state where renewables make up 57% of the total energy capacity, while thermal energy accounts for 43%. He added that the state has more potential to increase its progress under the flagship schemes of the Central Government. A total of 3.85 lakh installations have been done so far under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijali Yojana. This number needs to be boosted. Union Minister Joshi said that passion of Gujarat is not just about trade and commerce. It is about doing business responsibly and sustainably. We are proud that this plant with its full potential will contribute to making India a global powerhouse in solar energy, he said.

    Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, and Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Delivering the keynote of the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Annual Memorial Lecture at the 71st Foundation Day of Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), highlighted the democratisation of services delivery over the last ten years since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over.

    He underscored the government’s commitment to ensure that governance reaches the last citizen in line, embodying the true realization of Antyodaya

    Dr. Jitendra Singh reaffirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance mantra, Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas, emphasizing the decade-long transformative journey that has led to a 360-degree shift in governance. He highlighted his Ministry’s responsibility in bringing governance closer to the citizens through various citizen-centric reforms.

    The Minister outlined several landmark reforms, including: Democratization of Civil Services: A significant demographic shift with increased representation of women officers across government sectors, especially in STEM fields. Life Certificate Campaign: A revolutionary initiative that has eased the process for elderly pensioners by eliminating the need for physical verification at bank branches through facial recognition technology. Simplification of Processes: Introduction of a single simplified pension form, a unified fellowship application portal, a single platform for higher education applications, and the abolition of over 1,600 obsolete rules. Multilingual Recruitment Exams: Government recruitment exams are now conducted in 13 regional languages, with plans to extend to all 22 scheduled languages of the Constitution. Abolition of Interviews for Certain Posts: Creating a level playing field in recruitment processes. Rozgar Melas: A significant platform facilitating employment opportunities for youth and boosting their aspirations

     

    Dr. Jitendra Singh also spoke about the government’s Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Science approach, integrating sectors such as space and nuclear energy with private participation to harness collective potential.

    India now ranks 4th globally in patent filings, with 56% of patents filed by resident Indians. He also cited a recent survey from December 31, 2024, which revealed that India has nearly 5,400 scientists among the top 2% best researchers worldwide.

    Following the celebrations, as Chairman of IIPA, Dr. Singh presided over the 326th Executive Council Meeting, reviewing action points from the previous meeting and guiding the council on annual activities, including workshops and capacity-building initiatives. He announced that 130 new life members from diverse backgrounds—administrators, academicians, and state service officers—had been onboarded.

    The Minister also directed IIPA to extend its knowledge repository and leadership training modules beyond government sectors to contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.

    An MoU between IIPA and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) was exchanged in the presence of Dr. Singh. Additionally, he unveiled the book “Antyodaya Se Sarvodaya: A Framework of Universal Fulfilment”.

    The event witnessed the participation of several distinguished dignitaries, including: Shri S. N. Tripathi, IAS (Retd.), Director General, IIPA; Shri Shekhar Dutt, Former Governor of Chhattisgarh; Shri V.   • MIL-OSI China: Greenland announces new autonomous govt

    Greenland announced the formation of a new autonomous government on Friday amid heightened tensions with the United States.

    Just hours before the arrival of U.S. Vice President JD Vance on the Arctic island, a ceremony was held at the Katuaq Cultural Center in the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk, where four political parties representing 23 of the 31 seats in the parliament signed a coalition agreement to form the new government.

    Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Demokraatit (Democratic Party), will serve as the new prime minister.

    Following the announcement, Nielsen emphasized national unity in the face of international pressure. “By now forming a broad coalition, we will ensure that no one in the world should have any doubt that Greenland stands united,” he told journalists.

    He reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and has no desire to become part of the United States.

    The new cabinet includes former Prime Minister Mute Egede, who will now take on the role of minister of finance and taxation. Speaking to the media, Egede said: “We are obliged to lead our country forward with the pressure that is from the outside world right now, and the interest that is in our country.”

    Vivian Motzfeldt, incoming foreign minister of Greenland’s government, told Xinhua that mutual respect must be the basis for any diplomatic engagement. “I believe it’s also crucial for us to return to a more normal way of life, especially considering the recent developments in the United States,” she said.

    “A healthy dialogue requires mutual respect. If we want a meaningful conversation, we must also show respect for the other country. So, for me, it’s essential that we establish common ground based on mutual respect,” she added.

    Aqqalu Jerimiassen, chairman of the Atassut party, underscored the need for national unity in the light of recent provocations. “Right now, I believe the priority is unity – taking care of each other and building cooperation, rather than reacting to provocations, especially those coming from the United States, and particularly from that orange-haired man (U.S. President Donald Trump) who keeps trying to provoke us,” he told Xinhua.

    In Copenhagen, when Denmark’s King Frederik X was asked by local media TV2 to comment on the growing tensions between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, he confirmed his love for Greenland, saying that “my connection to the Greenlandic people is intact.” He also stressed that “we live in a changed reality.”

    The announcement of the new coalition drew applause from local residents at the Katuaq center. “I hope the new government can speak out on behalf of the people of Greenland,” Aviaja Martinsen, a citizen of Nuuk, told Xinhua.

    Later that day, Vance and his wife Usha, together with U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, arrived in Greenland. Vance delivered a speech at a U.S. military base and received a security briefing on the Arctic situation from U.S. military officials at the Pituffik Space Base.

    The timing of Vance’s visit has raised eyebrows, following repeated assertions by Donald Trump that the United States wants to take over Greenland. Officials in both Nuuk and Copenhagen view the visit as provocative.

    At a Friday press briefing at the White House, Trump reiterated: “We are not talking about peace for the United States. We are talking about world peace. We are talking about international security. And if Denmark and the EU do not understand it, we must explain it to them.”

    Greenland, once a Danish colony, became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953. It was granted home rule in 1979, expanding its autonomy, though Denmark retains control over foreign affairs and defense.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SBA Offers Relief to Missouri Small Businesses and Private Nonprofits Affected by November Drought

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low interest federal disaster loans to small businesses and private nonprofit (PNP) organizations in Missouri who sustained economic losses caused by the drought beginning Nov. 1, 2024.

    The disaster declaration covers the counties of Barry, Bates, Benton, Boone, Callaway, Camden, Cass, Cedar, Christian, Cole, Cooper, Dade, Dallas, Douglas, Gasconade, Greene, Henry, Hickory, Jasper, Johnson, Laclede, Lawrence, Maries, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Newton, Osage, Pettis, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, St. Clair, Stone, Vernon, Webster and Wright in Missouri, as well as Linn and Miami counties in Kansas.

    Under this declaration, SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, nurseries, and PNPs with financial losses directly related to the disaster. The SBA is unable to provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers, except for small aquaculture enterprises.

    EIDLs are available for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the small business or PNP did not suffer any physical damage. The loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills not paid due to the disaster.

    “Through a declaration by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, SBA provides critical financial assistance to help communities recover,” said Chris Stallings, associate administrator of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the SBA. “We’re pleased to offer loans to small businesses and private nonprofits impacted by these disasters.”

    The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates as low as 4% for small businesses and 3.625% for PNPs, with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not accrue, and payments are not due, until 12 months after the date of the first loan disbursement. The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services.

    Submit completed loan applications to SBA no later than Nov. 25.
