Moscow continues to amaze with creative projects, inspiring young designers to create unique decorations for the city. The square near the Central Department Store has once again turned into an open-air gallery – an exhibition of designer Christmas trees dedicated to Chinese New Year. The festival is held within the framework of the project “Winter in Moscow”.
The exhibit featured various Russian brands. Designers transformed the familiar New Year tree into an art object that conveys their aesthetics and philosophy.
One tree was decorated with elements dedicated to Chinese mythology. The moon symbolizes the Lunar New Year, and the rabbit figures recall the Eastern legend, according to which rabbits cook sticky rice on the moon – a popular holiday delicacy. The arch on the tree represents the transition from the past to the future, and gifts wrapped in red cloth with gold tassels symbolize prosperity.
Another brand’s team created a tree-affirmation for the coming year. Red is a symbol of happiness and good fortune, and also part of the brand’s signature palette. The knots decorating the tree refer to the Chinese tradition: the more important the event, the bigger and larger the knot is tied.
Another tree attracts attention with its iridescent material, which seems to make you look at the familiar in a new way. White balls are reminiscent of traditional Chinese lanterns, combining Eastern culture with modern art.
A Russian accessories brand decorated a Christmas tree in the style of Chinese legends. According to legend, the red color scares away the Nian monster, and the lanterns are associated with the festival where people make wishes. The composition is complemented by red bows, symbolizing eternal love and family unity.
Another tree features toys in the form of graphic symbols and iconic brand avatars. Their design reflects key elements of the brand’s style, such as the earth, the astronaut and the tank, which have remained recognizable over the years.
Another brand has created a Christmas tree, a harbinger of spring. Its decorations are delicate pink flowers, which are traditionally used in Chinese decor. The composition is complemented by pompoms, referring to one of the brand’s collections.
Each tree at this exhibition has a unique story and cultural message that combines Eastern traditions and modern Russian design.
Moscow is hosting a large-scale celebration of the Lunar New Year until February 9. This is a continuation of the events held as part of the cross-cultural Years of Russia and China, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries. Russian and Chinese artists perform at nine central venues, thematic quizzes and prize draws are held, master classes and lectures are organized, and guests can also try exquisite Chinese cuisine. The central streets of the city are decorated in traditional oriental style.
Project “Winter in Moscow”— the main event of the season, which until February 28 brings together various events in the capital. Citizens and tourists are invited to remember traditions and history, warm up with tea and hot buns, go ice skating, watch ice shows, give gifts to people who find themselves in a difficult life situation, and show concern for those who need it.
Muscovites and guests of the capital are offered a huge selection of events in the open air and in cultural and sports institutions.
