MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Threats at the external borders – the role of FRONTEX – E-001723/2025

Source: European Parliament

Question for written answer  E-001723/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Afroditi Latinopoulou (PfE)

The European Union is failing to secure its external borders, while irregular migration flows are rising dangerously. Instead of acting as a deterrent, FRONTEX remains cumbersome, largely ineffective and lacking in effective operational power. Frontline Member States, such as Greece, are basically tackling a European crisis alone. The Commission should clarify whether it really intends to strengthen FRONTEX or whether it will continue to sacrifice European security in the name of ‘solidarity’ without borders.

In light of the above, can the Commission answer the following:

  • 1.To what extent does it consider that FRONTEX is adequately fulfilling its role of defending external borders, especially in light of the recent tensions in Evros, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean?
  • 2.Are there any plans to step-up FRONTEX’s competences so that it can immediately gain an operational deterrence capability?
  • 3.What sort of cooperation is there with military and national border guard forces?
