BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — China’s broadcasting and online audiovisual industry will see strong growth in 2024, driven by the booming popularity of online mini-series and expanding digital media consumption, an official report said Friday.
The sector earned revenue of 1.29 trillion yuan (US$178 billion), up 5.27 percent from the previous year, the State Radio and Television Administration of China said in a report.
Particularly notable growth was seen in the online content segment, which earned 183.1 billion yuan through paid subscriptions, software copyrights and other operating services, up 34.6 percent year-on-year.
Mini-series, a fast-growing format designed for mobile viewing, have become a powerful engine for both innovation and profitability in the industry. Meanwhile, revenue from short-video and live-streaming platforms remained strong, reaching RMB 451.5 billion, up 5.43 percent year-on-year.
China’s online entertainment sector continued to grow rapidly in 2024. According to official data, authorities issued distribution licenses for 219 major online movies, 166 web series, as well as 659 online cartoons and 602 mini-series during the year.
Meanwhile, Chinese internet users spent an average of more than three hours a day watching online audiovisual content, reflecting the deepening role of digital platforms in the daily cultural consumption of the Chinese population. -0-
