MUSCAT, June 14 (Xinhua) — The sixth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear deal talks scheduled for Sunday, June 15, “will not take place,” Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi said on Saturday.
In his post on social media X, Badr al-Busaidi reiterated that diplomacy and dialogue remain the only way to achieve lasting peace.
The announcement came amid heightened tensions following Israel’s major strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, raising fears of a wider regional escalation.
Israel launched airstrikes on the Iranian capital Tehran and other cities early Friday, aiming to damage the Islamic republic’s nuclear infrastructure, ballistic missile production and military capabilities.
In response, Iran launched a salvo of ballistic missiles at military targets in Israel that evening.
In a telephone conversation with European Union diplomacy chief Kaya Kallas on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that further indirect talks between his country and the US were pointless amid Israel’s “continued brutality.”
Commenting on Iran’s decision to participate in the sixth round of talks with the American side, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei noted: “In the current circumstances, our key focus is on countering the enemy’s aggression.”
Since April this year, Iranian and US delegations have held five rounds of indirect talks with Oman as the mediator on Tehran’s nuclear program and the lifting of US sanctions. Three were held in the Omani capital Muscat and two in Rome. –0–
