GUIYANG, June 26 (Xinhua) — Six people have been killed in severe flooding in Rongjiang County of southwest China’s Guizhou Province as of 11 a.m. Thursday, the local flood control headquarters said.
Since Tuesday, Rongjiang County has been hit by the worst flooding in 50 years, with water levels in several rivers rising sharply. The maximum flow rate reached 11,360 cubic meters per second.
Many low-lying areas were flooded, significant damage was caused to infrastructure in several volosts and villages, as a result of which traffic was difficult, communications were disrupted, and residents found themselves in a difficult situation.
At present, the water level in the county seat has dropped below the critical level. Efforts have also been made to carry out dredging and drainage work, take measures to prevent outbreaks of epidemics and carry out disinfection in the affected areas, carry out post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, and organize a search for people trapped by the disaster. -0-
