MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Support measures for people with coeliac disease – E-001496/2025

Source: European Parliament

Question for written answer  E-001496/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Margarita de la Pisa Carrión (PfE)

An estimated 1-3 % of people in the world have coeliac disease. The only possible treatment and diet for those people is a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free products entail considerable extra costs, however. The Spanish Federation of Coeliac Associations’ 2025 price report shows that those extra costs can be more than EUR 1 000 per family every year.

Some Member States provide financial support or reimbursement to cover the cost of gluten-free food. Others, including Spain, however, provide little or no support, which makes it harder to acquire a basic necessity – food – and the treatment people with coeliac disease need.

Given that the Commission has presented recommendations or guidelines in other areas of health:

  • 1.Is the Commission planning to study and compare support measures for people with coeliac disease in place in Member States?
  • 2.Does the Commission believe it appropriate to include the issue in its forthcoming programmes to encourage Member States to take measures so people with coeliac disease have access to the specific food they need?
