EU laws protect the welfare of animals bred and kept for farming purposes. When these animals are removed from the food chain and placed in sanctuaries or shelters, the same EU legislation continues to apply. National legislation may, however, grant special status to such animals. Application of special welfare rules therefore varies considerably across the Union.
