Alberta’s government is committed to refocusing the health care system to ensure all Albertans get the care they need when and where they need it. Since it was announced in November 2023 that work would commence to refocus the health care system, significant progress has been made to achieve this goal.
Recovery Alberta became fully operational last September. On Feb. 1, Primary Care Alberta will become fully operational and Acute Care Alberta will be established as a legal entity. Seniors, Community and Social Services announced its plans to establish Assisted Living Alberta, the new provincial health agency that will oversee continuing care in the province, on Jan. 30. This agency, the fourth and final provincial health agency to be established, is expected to be operational this fall.
While there has been progress made, the efforts to refocus the health care system are at a critical point, and Alberta’s government needs to remain responsive to the health system and the needs of Albertans who continue to access the care they need every day.
Effective Jan. 31, interim president and CEO Andre Tremblay will take on an official administrator role in place of the board of directors to oversee all remaining activities to transition AHS to its role as a service delivery provider. He will also retain his position as deputy minister of the Ministry of Health.

As official administrator, Tremblay will oversee the successful completion of the system refocusing initiative at AHS while also ensuring the agency’s seamless transition to an acute care service provider and hospital operator. The official administrator will also assume the regular roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, ensuring Albertans continue to receive high-quality health care across the province.
The Ministry of Health will be taking over responsibility for the search of a new permanent president and CEO of Alberta Health Services.
