  • MIL-OSI USA News: Regarding the Proposed Acquisition of the United States Steel Corporation by Nippon Steel Corporation

    Source: US Whitehouse

class=”has-text-align-left”>By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 721 of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended (section 721), 50 U.S.C. 4565, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1.  Review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.  (a)  On March 14, 2024, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) received a voluntary notice describing the proposed acquisition by (1) Nippon Steel Corporation, a corporation organized under the laws of Japan (Nippon Steel); (2) Nippon Steel North America, Inc., a New York corporation (Nippon Steel NA); and (3) 2023 Merger Subsidiary, Inc., a Delaware corporation (together with Nippon Steel and Nippon Steel NA, the Purchasers), of United States Steel Corporation, a Delaware corporation (U.S. Steel, and such proposed acquisition, the Proposed Transaction).  CFIUS subsequently initiated a review and investigation of the Proposed Transaction, which ultimately concluded with a referral to the President on December 23, 2024, for decision pursuant to section 721(d).
    (b)  On January 3, 2025, pursuant to section 721(d)(1), then-President Biden issued an order titled “Regarding the Proposed Acquisition of United States Steel Corporation by Nippon Steel Corporation” (January 3 Order), which prohibited the Proposed Transaction.
    (c)  The statutory provision on which the January 3 Order was based authorizes the President to “take such action for such time as the President considers appropriate to suspend or prohibit any covered transaction that threatens to impair the national security of the United States.”  50 U.S.C. 4565(d)(1).  Consistent with that authority, section 3 of the January 3 Order reserved the President’s authority to issue further orders as “necessary to protect the national security of the United States.”
    (d)  Pursuant to the authority referred to in subsection (c) of this section, and the President’s authority to reconsider prior actions, on April 7, 2025, I issued a Presidential Memorandum, entitled “Review of Proposed United States Steel Corporation Acquisition” (April 7 Memo), which directed CFIUS to conduct a de novo review of the Proposed Transaction to assist me in determining whether further action in this matter may be appropriate.
    (e)  CFIUS submitted a recommendation to me on May 21, 2025, which, in accordance with the April 7 Memo, described CFIUS agency views regarding the risks to national security arising as a result of the Proposed Transaction, and included views on whether any measures proposed by U.S. Steel and the Purchasers are sufficient to mitigate those national security risks.  The recommendation included a statement describing the position of each member agency of CFIUS, including the reasons for such position.

Sec2.  Findings.  (a)  I hereby affirm the following findings, made initially in the January 3 Order:
    (i)   there is credible evidence that leads me to believe that the Purchasers, through the Proposed Transaction, might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States; and
(ii)  provisions of law other than section 721 and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) do not, in my judgment, provide adequate and appropriate authority for me to protect the national security in this matter.
    (b)  Based on the recommendation of and my review of the materials provided by CFIUS, including re-review of the prior assessment of risk, I additionally find that the threatened impairment to the national security of the United States arising as a result of the Proposed Transaction can be adequately mitigated if the conditions set forth in section 3 of this order are met.

Sec3.  Actions Ordered and Authorized.  On the basis of the findings set forth in section 2 of this order, considering the factors described in subsection 721(f) of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as appropriate, and pursuant to my authority under applicable law, including section 721, I hereby order that:
    (a)  Section 2(a) of the January 3 Order is amended to read as follows:  “The Proposed Transaction, and any substantially similar transaction between the Purchasers and U.S. Steel, whether effected directly or indirectly by the Purchasers, through the Purchasers’ shareholders or shareholders’ immediate, intermediate, or ultimate foreign person beneficial owners, or through the Purchasers’ partners, subsidiaries, or affiliates, is prohibited, unless the Purchasers and U.S. Steel execute with the Department of the Treasury and any other appropriate member agencies of CFIUS, on or before the closing date of the Proposed Transaction, and remain in compliance thereafter with, a national security agreement (NSA) that is materially consistent, as so determined by the Department of the Treasury, with the draft NSA submitted to the Purchasers and U.S. Steel by the United States Government on June 13, 2025.”
    (b)  Section 2(e) of the January 3 Order is amended to read as follows:  “Without limitation on the exercise of authority by any agency under other provisions of law, and until such time as the Purchasers and U.S. Steel have either abandoned the Proposed Transaction to the satisfaction of CFIUS or entered into the NSA referred to in subsection (a) of this section, CFIUS is further authorized to implement measures, including monitoring and enforcement measures, it deems necessary and appropriate with regard to the Proposed Transaction to protect the national security of the United States, including measures available to it under section 721 and its implementing regulations, which include the remedies available for violations of any order, agreement, or condition entered into or imposed under section 721.”
    (c)  Sections 2(b) and 2(c) of the January 3 Order are stricken.

Sec4.  Reservation.  I hereby reserve my authority to issue further orders with respect to the Purchasers or U.S. Steel as shall in my judgment be necessary to protect the national security of the United States.

Sec5.  Publication and Transmittal.  (a)  This order shall be published in the Federal Register.
    (b)  I hereby direct the Secretary of the Treasury to transmit a copy of this order to the parties to the Proposed Transaction named in section 1 of this order.

    A PROCLAMATION

On June 14, 1775, the sword and shield of our Republic were forged when the Second Continental Congress voted to establish what would later become the United States Army.  Today, our Nation proudly celebrates 250 years of our Army’s strength, service, valor, and discipline.  We honor its heroic legacy as the guardian of our sovereignty and our fortress against tyranny — and we pay tribute to the millions of warriors who live by the motto:  This We’ll Defend.

Following the first shots of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, it became clear to the patriots that — despite their persistent efforts for peace — war against the British was necessary as a final recourse in defense of their freedom.  In the wake of the Boston Massacre, the Intolerable Acts, and the enduring injustice of taxation without representation, they established the First Continental Congress in the fall of 1774 to formally address their grievances.  After dozens of patriots perished at Lexington and Concord, the Colonies reconvened — and by June 14, the delegates had decided that there was only one path forward.

On that spring day, in a momentous act of unity and resolve, the Congress passed a resolution to formally establish the instrument of our national defense in the form of the Continental Army.  “Resolved, that six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia” the resolution reads.

With the passing of that fateful resolution, the scattered militias of the American Colonies banded together as a single force — boldly declaring that they would never waver in defense of their liberty and their home.  The next day, George Washington was unanimously appointed as the Continental Army’s Commander-in-Chief.  Weeks later, on July 3, 1775, he took charge of his Army in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  “It is hoped that all Distinctions of Colonies will be laid aside so that one and the same Spirit may animate the whole, and the only Contest be, who shall render, on this great and trying occasion, the most essential service to the Great and common cause in which we are all engaged,” he wrote.

In the days, weeks, and years that followed, that very same Army shocked the Redcoats at Trenton and Princeton, won their first great victory at Saratoga, secured the cause of independence at Yorktown, preserved the Union at Gettysburg, held the line at Chateau-Thierry, stormed the bloody beaches of Normandy, and to this day, gallantly defends our inheritance of freedom against every foe with unmatched tenacity, courage, and strength.  What was first formed as a ragtag army of farmers, frontiersmen, blacksmiths, and merchants now stands as the most dominant military force ever born of human will — guided by the promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

To ensure our Army’s storied legacy continues well into the future, as President, I have purged the sinister ideology of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” from the ranks of our military.  I directed the Department of Defense to update its guidance regarding transgender — identifying medical standards to ensure our military remains the most lethal in the world.  In a long overdue redress of injustice, I reinstated American service members who were dismissed for refusing the COVID vaccine, with full back pay and benefits.  Every day, I am restoring a foreign policy of peace through strength — and as a result, military recruitment is soaring to historic highs.  Under my leadership, the United States military will remain the mightiest, fiercest, boldest, and most revered in the entire world.

On this 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army, we pay tribute to every legend of liberty who sacrificed their life to keep America safe, sovereign, and free.  As my Administration continues the work of protecting our homeland and upholding our way of life, we proudly summon the spirit, confidence, and resolve of the intrepid men who won our independence on the battlefield 250 years ago — and we vow that their legacy of courage will never perish, and that our sacred birthright of freedom will never, ever die.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as a day in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army.  This We’ll Defend.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
thirteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

  • MIL-OSI USA News: Flag Day and National Flag Week, 2025

    Source: US Whitehouse

class=”has-text-align-center”>BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    A PROCLAMATION

On June 14, 1777, a banner of red, white, and blue was woven into history when the Second Continental Congress passed the First Flag Resolution, making our beloved Stars and Stripes the official flag of our emerging Republic.  This Flag Day and National Flag Week, we pause to revere the star-spangled emblem of our freedom — and we honor the nearly 250 years of valor, sacrifice, and patriotism it has gloriously inspired.

In the summer of 1777, more than 2 years into the Revolution and nearly 1 year after the American Colonies declared their Independence from Great Britain, the need for unity, strength, and national identity was essential.  On June 14, the Congress convened to adopt a momentous resolution that galvanized the Colonies under a majestic and commanding insignia and proclaimed “the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”  In the midst of revolution, the emblem of our freedom was born — and the mightiest symbol for sovereignty and justice ever conceived by human hands was sewn into existence.

For nearly 250 years, Old Glory has presided over every chapter of the American story.  It gallantly flew as General George Washington crossed the Delaware, as President Abraham Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg, and as American forces raised it on the summit of Iwo Jima, the shores of Inchon, and in the jungles of Vietnam.  It waved from the moon on July 20, 1969 and rose from the ashes at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 — and time and again, it has been valiantly defended by patriots when extremist bands of anti-American agitators have sought to desecrate and destroy it.

Through every trial and triumph, the American flag has stood as an enduring symbol of courage, unity, and the unwavering belief that nothing will ever stand in the way of our beloved homeland, heritage, history, and values.  This week, as we pause in grateful allegiance to our beautiful flag, we pray for God’s continued providence and protection.  May the red, white, and blue forever reign over the greatest Nation in the history of the world — and may it always prevail over those who seek to tear it down.

To commemorate the adoption of our flag, the Congress, by joint resolution approved August 3, 1949, as amended (63 Stat. 492), designated June 14 of each year as “Flag Day” and requested that the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States on all Federal Government buildings.  The Congress also requested, by joint resolution approved June 9, 1966, as amended (80 Stat. 194), that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as “National Flag Week” and calling upon all citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as Flag Day, and the week starting June 8, 2025, as National Flag Week.  I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during this week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by displaying the flag.  I also encourage the people of the United States to proudly observe with all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
thirteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

  • MIL-OSI USA News: Father’s Day, 2025

    Source: US Whitehouse

class=”has-text-align-center”>By the President of the United States of America

    A Proclamation

America’s fathers are the custodians of our strength, the leaders of our families, and the protectors of our security and safety.  This Father’s Day, my Administration pays tribute to every father whose fierce love, heroic devotion, and inspiring example are molding the next generation.

Whether by birth, adoption, or father figures, America’s dads help shape the character and future of our Nation.  Through their example, they instill strength, integrity, and perseverance in their children.  They rise early, work late, make sacrifices, and remain steadfast in their love and commitment to their families.  Fathers lead through action, speak with purpose, and impart wisdom honed by experience.  From their children’s earliest days as infants through their journey into adulthood, fathers leave a lasting influence that reaches far beyond the walls of their homes.

The presence of a father also serves to plant the seeds of virtue and instill American values in their children.  For many, dads are the first to teach the value of hard work, love of country, and the importance of living with conviction.  With every generation, these lessons are carried forth.

As President, I am fighting every day for America’s fathers and families — preserving the Child Tax Credit, expanding school choice, and restoring the fundamental rights of parents to raise their children free from Government interference.  I will always stand with our dads in shielding children from the toxic lies of gender ideology, and I will never stop working to keep our neighborhoods safe by backing our law enforcement, crushing violent crime, and ensuring our southern border remains sealed and secure.  Together, we are building a Nation where fathers can lead with strength, protect their families, and pass on the timeless values that make America great.

Today, we celebrate the invaluable role our fathers play in shaping our families, guiding our communities, and strengthening our country — and we offer our unending thanks for their leadership, selflessness, and inspiration.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, in accordance with a joint resolution of the Congress approved April 24, 1972, as amended (36 U.S.C. 109), do hereby proclaim June 15, 2025, as Father’s Day.  I call on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Father’s Day and invite State and local governments and the people of the United States to observe Father’s Day with appropriate ceremonies.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Elder abuse: Know the signs, reduce the risk

As Alberta’s senior population continues to grow, Alberta’s government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring every Albertan senior can live with dignity, security and free from harm.

Elder abuse is a serious issue worldwide, including in Alberta. It is estimated that one in 10 seniors in the province experiences some form of abuse — an unacceptable reality Alberta’s government is determined to change.

Alberta’s government is taking action by collaborating with community partners to implement the province’s Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy and deliver practical, on-the-ground solutions. Over the next two years, more than $8 million will be invested in prevention and intervention efforts to protect seniors.

“Seniors are valued members of our communities and deserve to be treated as such. Ending elder abuse requires collective action — all Albertans have a role to play in recognizing the signs of abuse and taking action to spot it, stop it, and reduce the risk.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services

This funding will strengthen initiatives like the Coordinated Community Response Program, expand elder abuse shelter services, and grow the Safe Spaces Program, which increases shelter access for seniors in rural and Indigenous communities by repurposing vacant rooms in seniors’ lodges.

“Raising awareness about elder abuse is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of older adults. Our partnership with the Government of Alberta has strengthened community responses across the province, helping to prevent abuse, support those affected, and build a future where all seniors are treated with dignity and respect.”

Joanne Blinco, Executive Director, Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council

Each year on June 15, communities worldwide observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Many seniors who experience abuse feel ashamed, afraid, or unsure of where to turn to help, and this day serves as a critical opportunity to raise public awareness and encourage open conversations about elder abuse to break the silence.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Alberta’s government will launch a province-wide campaign to raise awareness and connect Albertans to available resources. As part of this initiative, survivors of elder abuse have courageously shared their stories to help others know they are not alone, and that help is available. To ensure broad accessibility, campaign materials will be translated into 14 languages.

All Albertans can become advocates for the safety and well-being of seniors by learning the signs of elder abuse and spreading the word. Join the conversation online using the hashtag #EndElderAbuse. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. • MIL-OSI USA: Weber Reintroduces Legislation to Provide Fair Pay for Federal Correctional Officers

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Randy Weber (14th District of Texas)

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Randy Weber (TX-14) reintroduced the Pay Our Correctional Officers Fairly Act, aimed at improving staffing and retention within the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) by ensuring competitive and fair pay for correctional officers. The legislation would revise the locality pay system for BOP employees, allowing facilities located within 200 miles of the nearest General Schedule (GS) locality pay area to offer higher wages. This change reflects the real costs associated with commuting, cost-of-living, and the difficult and often dangerous work correctional officers perform every day.

In a strong show of bipartisan, bicameral support, Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) will lead the bill in the Senate, with Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and John Fetterman (D-PA) joining as original cosponsors.

“Our correctional officers put their lives on the line day in and day out to keep our communities safe,” said Rep. Weber.  “It’s time their pay reflects the seriousness of that responsibility. This commonsense bill ensures that correctional officers—whether they serve in Beaumont, Texas, or anywhere across this nation—are compensated fairly for the dangerous, essential work they perform every single day.”

“Underpaying correctional officers leads to fatigue, which leads to mistakes and safety risks,” said Dr. Cassidy. “If we want criminals to remain behind bars, then we need to provide Bureau of Prisons employees with workable conditions. This goes for FCC Oakdale, Pollock, and the rest of Louisiana.”

“As the Representative of FCI Ray Brook, I am working to address the significant challenges our hardworking correctional officers are facing such as low staffing and retention issues,” said Chairwoman Stefanik. “Our COs put their lives on the line every single day and I am committed to addressing their staffing, compensation, and retirement issues in Congress.”

Cosponsors include: Reps. Don Bacon (NE-02), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Frank Lucas (R-OK), and Elise Stefanik (NY-21).

  • MIL-OSI USA: ICYMI: Trump is gutting police and public safety funding in California

Source: US State of California Governor

    Jun 13, 2025

What you need to know: Donald Trump is raiding public safety funds to bankroll his militarized birthday party this Saturday, while stripping local police departments, first responders, and communities across the country of the tools they need to keep Americans safe.

Los Angeles, CaliforniaDonald Trump, a convicted felon who has prioritized pardoning individuals convicted of assaulting police, is gutting public safety funding — slashing billions from programs that help police departments, fight terrorism, prevent gun violence, and protect women and children from domestic violence — all while he adds to the nation’s debt to pay for militarizing Los Angeles and his ego-driven birthday party this Saturday.

Trump doesn’t respect the rule of law and taxpayers. He uses our members of the military — our heroes — as his own chess pieces and he’s stacking the deck against our own state and local law enforcement. We’ve had enough.

    Governor Gavin Newsom

    Trump is defunding public safety

President Trump is proposing to gut public safety funding across the country — putting the safety and lives of all Americans at risk.

At a time when violent crime is dropping, Trump’s so-called “big beautiful bill” threatens to erase substantial progress on public safety, at a time when exactly the opposite is needed.

The President’s proposed funding cuts include:

    • $1 billion from police departments to reduce violent crime, hate crime, and crime against women.
    • $646 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for violence and terrorism prevention.
    • $545 million from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), cutting its workforce by more than 2,000 personnel and reducing its capacity to keep criminals off the street.
    • $491 million from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), making our cyber and physical infrastructure more vulnerable to attack.
    • $468 million from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), greatly reducing its ability to crack down on firearm trafficking and reduce gun violence.
    • $212 million from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), greatly reducing its capacity to help state and local law enforcement and weakening efforts to fight international drug smuggling impacting the United States.
    • $107 million from Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Public Safety and Justice, exacerbating current understaffing and making tribal communities less safe.

$134 million reasons why this is wrong

As the federal government adds to the open deficit tab, taxpayers are footing the $134 million militarization display in Los Angeles where Trump illegally took control over state National Guard units. Trump federalized 4,000 National Guard soldiers and deployed 700 Marines to use as pawns in Los Angeles.

Even as tensions rise in the Middle East, in an unprecedented move, there are now more American troops deployed in Los Angeles than in Iraq and Syria combined.

Trump is adding to the national debt

Trump’s budget proposal would push the country further into debt. Although he proposes cutting public safety funding, he proposes even more massive tax cuts for the wealthy, pushing the federal government further into the red. According to the Congressional Budget Office, his proposal would add $2.4 trillion to the deficit, before even considering interest costs.

    Birthday display

And, in a scene more common in authoritarian dictatorships, Trump is holding a massive $45 million birthday party for himself in Washington, D.C.

Trump’s parade, set to destroy streets in Washington DC due to heavy military vehicles rolling through, including 28 M1A1 tanks, 28 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 28 Stryker armored fighting vehicles and vehicles towing artillery, is being thrown in the face of Americans reeling from his attempt to militarize Los Angeles.

The festivities will be visible on the ground and in the air – with more than 50 helicopters participating in a large flyover in the nation’s capital. See the Governor’s response to this fete here

    Hypocrisy on full display

In 2020, Trump said he wouldn’t federalize National Guard members without the approval of a state’s Governor first. The head of his own Department of Homeland Security said just last year that federalizing the National Guard would be a direct attack on state rights. But now his administration is adding more National Guard soldiers and Marines to an already charged situation in Los Angeles when they are unneeded. There are 1,600 soldiers waiting for commands at armories in the area.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Director General Grossi’s Statement to UNSC on Situation in Iran

Source: International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA

Early this morning, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was informed of the military operation launched by Israel which includes attacks on nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

As I reported this morning to the IAEA Board of Governors, we have been in permanent contact with the Iran Nuclear Regulatory Authority, to ascertain the status of relevant nuclear facilities and to assess any wider impacts on nuclear safety and security.

Iran has confirmed that at present, only the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant site has been attacked in today’s strikes. This facility contains the Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant.

At Natanz, the above-ground part of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant, where Iran was producing uranium enriched up to 60% U-235, has been destroyed.

Electricity infrastructure at the facility (electrical sub-station, main electric power supply building, emergency power supply and back-up generators) has been destroyed.

There is no indication of a physical attack on the underground cascade hall containing part of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant and the main Fuel Enrichment Plant. However, the loss of power to the cascade hall may have damaged the centrifuges there.

The level of radioactivity outside the Natanz site has remained unchanged and at normal levels indicating no external radiological impact to the population or the environment from this event.

However, due to the impacts, there is radiological and chemical contamination inside the facilities in Natanz. The type of radiation present inside the facility, primarily alpha particles, is manageable with appropriate radiation protection measures.

At present, the Iranian authorities are informing us of attacks on the other facilities, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant; and Esfahan site, where a fuel plate fabrication plant, a fuel manufacturing plant, a uranium conversion facility and an enriched UO2 powder plant are located. However I have to inform that at this moment we do not have enough information beyond indicating that military activity has been taking place around these facilities as well which initially had not been part of military operation.

All these developments are deeply concerning. I have repeatedly stated that nuclear facilities must never be attacked, regardless of the context or circumstances, as it could harm both people and the environment.  Such attacks have serious implications for nuclear safety, security and safeguards, as well as regional and international peace and security.

In this regard, the IAEA recalls the numerous General Conference resolutions on the topic of military attacks against nuclear facilities, in particular, GC(XXIX)/RES/444 and GC(XXXIV)/RES/533, which provide, inter alia, that “any armed attack on and threat against nuclear facilities devoted to peaceful purposes constitutes a violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law and the Statute of the Agency”.

Furthermore, the IAEA has consistently underlined that “armed attacks on nuclear facilities could result in radioactive releases with grave consequences within and beyond the boundaries of the State which has been attacked”, as was stated in GC(XXXIV)/RES/533.

As Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and consistent with the objectives of the IAEA under the IAEA Statute, I call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation. I reiterate that any military action that jeopardizes the safety and security of nuclear facilities risks grave consequences for the people of Iran, the region, and beyond.

Madame Under Secretary General evoked that yesterday, the Board of Governors of the IAEA adopted an important resolution on Iran’s safeguards obligations. In addition to this, the Board resolution stressed its support for a diplomatic solution to the problems posed by the Iranian nuclear programme.

The IAEA continues to monitor the situation closely.  Our Incident and Emergency Center (IEC) has maintained continuous contact with Iranian authorities from the onset of the attack, regularly confirming the status of the facilities and will continue to do so in the coming days. Additionally, we have established a task force comprising several senior staff members to monitor the situation closely over the next few days, and they will be available 24/7at the disposal of the UNSC.

The IAEA stands ready to provide technical assistance, and remains committed to its nuclear safety, security and safeguards mandate in all circumstances. I stand ready to engage with all relevant parties to help ensure the protection of nuclear facilities and the continued peaceful use of nuclear technology in accordance with the Agency mandate, including, deploying Agency nuclear security and safety experts (in addition to our safeguards inspectors in Iran) wherever necessary to ensure that nuclear installations are fully protected and continue to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.

As I informed today the IAEA Board of Governors, I have indicated to the respective authorities my readiness to travel at the earliest to assess the situation and ensure safety, security and non-proliferation in Iran.

I have also been in contact with our inspectors in Iran and Israel. The safety of our staff is of paramount importance. All necessary actions are being taken to ensure they are not harmed.

Despite the current military actions and heightened tensions, it is clear that the only sustainable path forward—for Iran, for Israel, the entire region, and the international community—is one grounded in dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace, stability, and cooperation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, as the International technical institution entrusted with overseeing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, remains a unique and vital forum for dialogue, especially now.

In accordance with its Statute and longstanding mandate, the IAEA provides the framework and natural platform where facts prevail over rhetoric and where engagement can replace escalation.

I reaffirm the Agency’s readiness to facilitate technical discussions and support efforts that promote transparency, safety, security and the peaceful resolution of nuclear-related issues in Iran.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Marshall Joins Senators Hawley and Lee in Introducing Legislation to Increase Penalties Against Criminal Flag Burners

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Kansas Roger Marshall

Washington – On Thursday, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) joined fellow Republican Senators Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) to introduce the Enhanced Penalties for Criminal Flag Burners Act, which would enact sentencing enhancements for individuals who burn the American flag in the course of committing a federal offense.
If signed into law, the Enhanced Penalties for Criminal Flag Burners Act would ensure that criminals who burn flags to further their delinquent schemes serve an extra year in prison. It would also formally recognize the danger to people and property posed by burning the American flag.
“While the First Amendment safeguards free expression, it does not shield those who commit federal crimes. Burning the flag as part of such lawlessness, especially when it endangers lives or property, warrants a harsher penalty, as it compounds the offense with a deliberate affront to our nation’s symbol,” said Senator Marshall. “I am proud to join Senator Hawley in introducing this commonsense legislation that protects the vital symbols that unite us all.”“Committing a crime is not protected under the First Amendment. If you are putting people and property in danger and burning our flag in the process, you should serve extra time in prison,” said Senator Hawley. “I encourage all of my Republican colleagues to join President Trump in supporting this legislation. It’s time to restore law and order in America and demand our flag be treated with respect.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Marshall: We Are Unleashing America’s Energy Dominance

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Kansas Roger Marshall

Washington – On Friday, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) applauded the announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish required Renewable Fuel Standard (RSF) volumes and percentage standards for 2026 and 2027, as well as to partially waive the 2025 cellulosic biofuel volume requirement and revise the associated percentage standard due to a shortfall in cellulosic biofuel production.
This will fulfill the Trump Administration’s goal of strengthening support for American farmers and biofuel producers in rural communities. While also eliminating the electric vehicle mandate by removing electricity as an eligible pathway under the RFS (e-RINS). Additionally, foreign feedstocks from countries like Brazil and China will no longer be infringing on American commodity markets, as this rule mandates that biofuels generated using foreign feedstocks will generate only 50% of the value of the incentive given to biofuel producers who use them.
“Today’s announcement from President Trump and EPA Administrator Zeldin delivers on a promise to put American farmers first, while reducing our reliance on foreign energy sources to strengthen domestic agriculture and energy production,” said Senator Marshall “Renewable fuels deliver cleaner and more affordable fuel at the pump, as well as long-term profitability for our farmers and rural communities. This is a huge win for rural America and the future of our energy sector. Thanks to President Trump for not only removing the disastrous Biden EV mandates but also supporting our hard-working farmers and ranchers. Once again, Promises Made, Promises Kept.”
    Background:

The EPA released an announcement today that sets the proposed volume obligation for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) at 5.61 billion gallons by 2026 and 5.86 billion gallons in 2027, the highest renewable volume obligation (RVO) ever announced.
Senator Marshall raised concerns about foreign imports in our biomass-fuel supply last year to the Biden Administration.

    Source: Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa

PSNA has conveyed to the Egyptian government its shock and anger at the deportation of a Palestinian New Zealander from Egypt yesterday (Thurs eds).

PSNA says Rana Hamida was deported because she planned to take part in the Global March to Gaza. Others deported include Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Moroccan, Greek and US citizens.

The Global March to Gaza is due to start today in Egypt with thousands of people from throughout the world taking part.

“PSNA Co-Chair John Minto says the march is to express humanity’s outrage at the ongoing Gaza-wide bombing and starving of the Palestinian population by Israel in Occupied Gaza.

“Egypt’s action in deporting activists can only be seen as assisting Israel’s attacks against the Palestinian population.”

“Unfortunately, Egypt has a long history of collaboration with the US and Israel to stifle the Palestine liberation struggle. This is in sharp contrast to the Egyptian people who are as appalled and angry as the rest of humanity at Israel’s horrendous war crimes.”

“We received this message from Rana as she makes her way home:

“They Egyptian authorities along with other governments think that blocking humanity from this act of solidarity will stop because of them blocking people from being there and doing the job that they continue failing to do !!!

They are so mistaken – the more complicit and enabling they get in their inactions and in this case their active participation, the more we will rise, and roar.

We are escalating as you awaken the dragons within us.

We will sing louder and we will walk longer — with our hiking shoes in the Sinai desert, or barefoot towards your embassies. We will disrupt your meetings, we will crowd your phone with calls and emails, and we will be the light that blinds your robotic heart and melts it alongside the lies you stand for.

This is not about us, it is about HUMANITY within us that is dying and being oppressed in various forms, it is about the humans enduring hell in Gaza, West Bank and Falastine as a whole.

    Muslims, Jews and Christians together.

It is about NEVER AGAIN !!!

Boycott, divest — We will not stop we will not rest.

  • MIL-OSI Submissions: GAZA – June 13 – Lives at risk as communications down at Gaza’s hospitals

    Source: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Flash Quote by Jose Mas, Head of MSF Emergency Programmes:

“Our teams in Gaza are witnessing another chaotic day as the carnage at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution sites continues unabated, internet connection is cut off at mass scale after an attack that hit communications lines, and Israeli forces issued new displacement orders in the blocks that include Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

On 11 June, MSF-supported Al Mawasi Primary Health care clinic received 32 casualties including three dead on arrival. The ICRC field hospital received 160 casualties including five dead on arrival and three with severe wounds who were declared dead shortly after. Today ICRC field hospital saw 125 people wounded with three declared dead upon arrival. Most of those killed and wounded are Palestinians that were seeking urgent assistance at GHF distribution sites.

The delivery of supplies by private logistics and security firms, as well as local armed actors under the guise of aid, disregarding humanitarian principles, imposing access restrictions on humanitarian agencies in terms of movements, supplies, as well as constantly displacing the population all with the backdrop of 20 months of intense daily bombardment, is pushing Gaza’s fragile social order to the brink of collapse.

The partial loss of communication has dealt another severe blow to the already decimated humanitarian and medical response, putting the lives of our patients and staff at imminent risk. We have barely heard from our teams in Gaza for over 12 hours. The lack of internet and limited phone connections makes it even harder for humanitarian and medical teams to coordinate movements of staff and supplies, call ambulances, and manage our teams’ security in one of the world’s deadliest war zones.

Moreover, the possibility of Nasser hospital being subjected to bombardment or damaged by attacks in the area or hardly being accessible anymore is harrowing. Nasser hospital has wards that cannot be moved without putting patients’ lives at grave danger, as their specialist equipment cannot be found anywhere else in southern Gaza, including incubators for the 17 babies currently in intensive care. The hospital is already functioning over capacity, as are other hospitals in Gaza.”

President Trump gave Iran an option for peace, but the regime proved it cannot be trusted by continuing to enrich its nuclear supply. WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a combat veteran who served in the Iowa Army National Guard, released the following statement ahead of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday tomorrow:
“From Bunker Hill and Gettysburg to the Beaches of Normandy and the Iraqi desert, the U.S. Army has fought to secure and protect the freedoms that we hold so dearly as Americans,” said Ernst. “The real story behind the 250 years of the Army is revealed in the brave young men and women who have stepped up and answered the call to serve our country. My own time in the Army opened my horizons to a life of service, and I am honored to have played a small part in the decorated history of America’s oldest military branch. • MIL-OSI USA: Ernst Applauds Trump Administration for Strengthening RFS and Delivering for Rural America

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA)
RED OAK, Iowa – Following the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent announcement on the Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) levels for 2026 and 2027, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, released the following statement:
“After Biden blatantly ignored the needs of farmers and biofuel producers, I applaud the Trump administration for getting the RFS back on track with today’s announcement,” said Senator Ernst. “By eliminating the electric vehicle mandate and restoring the RFS’ original focus on liquid transportation fuels, prioritizing domestically grown crops over foreign imports, setting record-high volumes to revitalize the biofuel industry, and adopting safeguards to prevent small refinery waivers from gutting the program—it is clear the Trump administration is committed to championing rural America. I look forward to working with President Trump’s team to usher this rule across the finish line and keep delivering for Iowa’s famers, biofuel producers, and rural communities.”
    Background:
Despite recommendations from Ernst, the Biden-era EPA finalized RVO levels that failed to accurately reflect market conditions and future production capacity. As a result, multiple biomass-based diesel plants have now permanently closed or temporary stalled, including one in Ralston, Iowa.
Following the plant’s closure, Ernst pushed the administration to increase RVO levels for homegrown Iowa biofuels. She has made the same request of the Trump administration. Ernst also backed legislation to include ocean-going vessels, such as cargo ships and tankers, under the RFS, opening up a new market for Iowa’s biofuel producers. Ernst has led the way in sounding the alarm on the dramatic increase in used cooking oil imports that can drive down demand for America crops.
More broadly, Ernst has been a leading advocate for homegrown, Iowa biofuels, securing access to E15 for the summer driving months, while continuing the call for permanent, nationwide availability that would give those in the biofuel industry the certainty they deserve. She was instrumental in creating and maintaining the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program as part of her commitment to invest in renewable fuel infrastructure, rural job opportunities, and hardworking farmers. Ernst also looks forward to working with the Trump administration to correct the incomplete and delayed Biden-era guidance on 45Z that has left biofuel producers and rural America in ongoing uncertainty.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Warner, Kaine, & Colleagues Press Trump Administration to Resume Processing DACA Applications

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Virginia Tim Kaine
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) and their Senate colleagues urged U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to resume processing applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program following the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision to narrow the nationwide injunction to Texas. Currently, more than 100,000 initial DACA applications are pending with USCIS. The letter comes in advance of the thirteenth anniversary of President Barack Obama establishing the DACA program in 2012. Since 2012, more than 825,000 people have received deferred action pursuant to DACA. DACA recipients contribute an estimated $140 billion to the U.S. economy in spending power and $40 billion in combined federal, payroll, state, and local taxes.
In the letter to USCIS Acting Director Alfonso-Royals, the senators began, “Noncitizens brought to the United States as children, often known as Dreamers, are American in every way but their immigration status. Many only know this country as their home, and they contribute every day to this great nation by paying taxes and serving in critical roles, such as police officers, teachers, and nurses. Americans overwhelmingly support providing Dreamers a path to citizenship, and in December 2024, President Trump stated that he supported protections for Dreamers to remain in the United States.”
“Consistent with this statement, we implore you to use your authority at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to resume processing initial applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and provide such protections for Dreamers immediately,” the senators continued.
The senators further elaborated on the Fifth Circuit’s decision to limit the injunction, writing, “Pursuant to the order, in Texas, DACA must resume as a limited program providing protection from deportation for current DACA recipients, but without access to work authorization or driver’s licenses as part of those renewals. This order went into effect on March 11, giving USCIS the authority to start processing initial DACA applications from states other than Texas. However, nearly three months later, USCIS has not made any public announcement on whether new DACA applications will be processed; nor has the agency begun processing initial applications that have been pending with the agency for years.”
“We urge you to begin processing these DACA applications immediately, consistent with the Fifth Circuit decision and existing regulations, and to ensure Dreamers eligible to file initial DACA applications can do so as soon as possible,” the senators concluded.

A copy of the letter is available here and below.
    Dear Acting Director Alfonso-Royals:
Noncitizens brought to the United States as children, often known as Dreamers, are American in every way but their immigration status. Many only know this country as their home, and they contribute every day to this great nation by paying taxes and serving in critical roles, such as police officers, teachers, and nurses. Americans overwhelmingly support providing Dreamers a path to citizenship, and in December 2024, President Trump stated that he supported protections for Dreamers to remain in the United States. Consistent with this statement, we implore you to use your authority at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to resume processing initial applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and provide such protections for Dreamers immediately.
In 2001, the Dream Act was introduced on a bipartisan basis to provide a path to citizenship to undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children but remained vulnerable to deportation. Since that time, the Dream Act has been introduced in every Congress. It has passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate with bipartisan majority votes, but no version has yet to be signed into law. In response to bipartisan pressure to protect Dreamers until Congress acted, the Obama Administration implemented DACA through a policy memorandum in 2012.
Since 2012, more than 825,000 people have received deferred action pursuant to DACA. Many DACA recipients report that deferred action—and the accompanying employment authorization —allowed them to apply for their first job or move to a higher-paying position more commensurate with their skills. Since its establishment, DACA recipients have contributed an estimated $140 billion to the U.S. economy in spending power, and $40 billion dollars in combined federal, payroll, state, and local taxes.
In 2021, U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen halted the DACA program and enjoined USCIS from approving any new DACA applications nationwide. While the program was enjoined, USCIS has continued to accept and hold initial applications, and in 2022, the Department of Homeland Security published the DACA Final Rule, codifying the 2012 memorandum establishing DACA into regulation. Over 100,000 initial DACA applications are pending with USCIS.
On January 17, 2025, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision limiting Judge Hanen’s injunction to Texas. Pursuant to the order, in Texas, DACA must resume as a limited program providing protection from deportation for current DACA recipients, but without access to work authorization or driver’s licenses as part of those renewals. This order went into effect on March 11, giving USCIS the authority to start processing initial DACA applications from states other than Texas. However, three months later, USCIS has not made any public announcement on whether new DACA applications will be processed; nor has the agency begun processing initial applications that have been pending with the agency for years.
We urge you to begin processing these DACA applications immediately, consistent with the Fifth Circuit decision and existing regulations, and to ensure Dreamers eligible to file initial DACA applications can do so as soon as possible.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.
    Sincerely,

BURLINGTON, Vt. June 13 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today released the following statement:
The world is more dangerous and unstable as a result of the extremist Netanyahu’s government ongoing defiance of international law.
First, he uses the starvation of children in Gaza as a tool of war, a barbaric violation of the Geneva Conventions. Now, his illegal unilateral attack on Iran risks a full-blown regional war. These strikes also directly contravened the express wishes of the United States, which was seeking a diplomatic resolution to the long-standing tensions around Iran’s nuclear program. Talks were planned for Sunday, but Netanyahu chose instead to launch an attack.
The U.S. must make it clear that we will not be dragged into another Netanyahu war. Along with the international community we should do everything possible to prevent an escalation of this conflict and bring the warring parties to the negotiating table.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cortez Masto, 40 Senate Democrats Press Trump Administration to Resume Processing DACA Applications

    US Senate News:

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined 39 Senate Democrats led by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) urging the Trump administration to resume processing applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, following a court ruling that limited a nationwide injunction to Texas.

The senators began by highlighting the popular support for providing Dreamers a pathway to citizenship, writing: “Noncitizens brought to the United States as children, often known as Dreamers, are American in every way but their immigration status.

The senators continued by making their request, writing: “Consistent with this statement, we implore you to use your authority at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to resume processing initial applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and provide such protections for Dreamers immediately.”

Sunday, June 15 marks the thirteenth anniversary of President Obama establishing the DACA program via policy memorandum in 2012. Since then, more than 825,000 people have received deferred action pursuant to DACA, empowering recipients to bolster their careers and contribute an estimated $140 billion to the U.S. economy in spending power and $40 billion in combined federal, payroll, state, and local taxes.

In 2021, U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen halted the DACA program and enjoined USCIS from approving any new DACA applications nationwide. More than 100,000 initial DACA applications are pending with USCIS.

On January 17, 2025, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision limiting Judge Hanen’s injunction to Texas.

The senators further elaborated on the Fifth Circuit’s decision to limit the injunction, writing: “Pursuant to the order, in Texas, DACA must resume as a limited program providing protection from deportation for current DACA recipients, but without access to work authorization or driver’s licenses as part of those renewals.

The senators concluded by reiterating their request, writing: “We urge you to begin processing these DACA applications immediately, consistent with the Fifth Circuit decision and existing regulations, and to ensure Dreamers eligible to file initial DACA applications can do so as soon as possible.”

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to Israel’s recent military strikes against Iran:

“Israel’s decision to attack Iran is a dangerous and unprecedented escalation, which endangers American servicemembers and civilians in the region, and puts countless other innocent lives at risk. Along with my colleagues, I will be closely monitoring the situation and urging the administration to ensure Americans remain out of harm’s way.  I urge the Trump administration and other leaders around the world to de-escalate the situation before it devolves into a prolonged, regional conflict that threatens the safety and security of millions of people and undermines U.S. national security interests. Like all Americans, I hope for a peaceful resolution as soon as possible.

“While we should never forget that it was Trump who carelessly walked away from President Obama’s deal to contain the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapons program, President Trump and his administration must now do everything possible to de-escalate the situation.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Joined by Constituents Who Rely on Medicaid and SNAP, Senator Murray Slams Republicans’ “Big Ugly Betrayal” for Gigantic Cuts to Programs That Washingtonians Depend on to Meet Basic Needs

    US Senate News:

Washington State Standard: Thousands in WA at risk of losing food benefits under GOP bill in Congress

NEW: Estimates show Republican cuts would result in 16 million people losing health care — including over 300,000 people in WA state

***PHOTOS AND B-ROLL FROM EVENT HERE***

***FULL VIDEO OF PRESS CONFERENCE HERE***

Seattle, WA — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, held a press conference laying out how Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act would be catastrophic for people across Washington state who rely on Medicaid, Affordable Care Act (ACA) health coverage, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Senator Murray was joined by health care providers and constituents in Washington state who stand to lose the health care and nutrition benefits they or their patients rely on under the legislation, which Republicans are seeking to pass through the reconciliation process—which requires only a simple majority of votes in each chamber of Congress. The legislation passed the House on May 22nd and is now being considered by the Senate.

“If Republicans pass this monstrosity into law, billionaires like Trump and Musk are going to make away like bandits while struggling families are going to have their entire world turned upside down. They are going to lose health care. They are going to lose food assistance. They are going to see costs go up and support they rely on go away,” Senator Murray said at the press conference today. “When it comes to health care, we are talking about 16 million people getting kicked off their insurance—from 8 million people Republicans will cut off from Medicaid with new paperwork, to 4 million who will lose ACA coverage due to Republican sabotage, to another 4 million who are going to lose coverage if Republicans refuse to extend tax cuts…In Washington state, this Republican disaster would take health care away from over 300,000 people minimum—200,000 from Medicaid alone…And again, I can’t emphasize enough: Republicans want to cut families off from SNAP and Medicaid—programs that give people a hand up in hard times—so they can give enormous hand outs to the richest people and biggest companies in the country. As someone who knows what it is like to have your family fall on hard times, as someone whose family relied on food stamps briefly, as someone whose parents used to say they ‘crawled’ to Medicare—you can bet I am going to fight like hell to make sure this bill goes nowhere except the trash bin. I know this won’t be an easy fight. But it is not an impossible fight, and it is absolutely an important one.”

In Washington state, 1.95 million people rely on Apple Health, Washington state’s Medicaid program, and over 300,000 Washingtonians access coverage through the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace (Washington Healthplanfinder). New estimates released last week by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that Republicans’ legislation will kick 16 million people off their health insurance—between the drastic cuts to Medicaid and the sabotage of the Affordable Care Act and refusal to expand tax credits Democrats passed to lower health insurance premiums. The Joint Economic Committee estimates that at least 306,312 in Washington state would lose their health insurance under the Republican bill—that includes 198,050 people who would be kicked off Medicaid and 108,262 people who would lose their coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Among other things, Republicans’ bill would institute work reporting requirements for Medicaid, which have been proven not to increase employment and just strip health care coverage from people who are already working or exempt—this would put more than 620,000 Washingtonians at risk of losing their health care coverage or having it delayed. Fourteen rural hospitals in Washington state would be at risk of closure under the Republican bill, according to a recent analysis. The legislation would also “defund” Planned Parenthood, threatening the closure of up to 200 health centers across the country.

In addition, Republicans’ reconciliation bill includes sweeping cuts to SNAP that would force between $95 million and $477 million in new costs onto Washington state. 11 percent of Washington state residents rely on SNAP, and the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services estimated that more than 900,000 people across the state could their see SNAP benefits reduced or eliminated under Republicans’ bill.

“I work in the Urgent Care. Most ERs and Urgent Cares are bursting at the seams. If Medicaid is cut, more children will not be able to see a doctor for appropriate preventative care or timely care for illnesses and injuries. Those kids then come see me. They are sicker than they would have been. Asthma that could have been managed with a simple inhaler ends up with a child on oxygen in the intensive care unit. A mild infection that could have been treated with oral antibiotics becomes a major infection requiring hospitalization and IV treatment. This is costly, inefficient, and worst of all—completely avoidable,” said Dr. Lelach Rave, Interim Executive Director of the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Cuts to Medicaid also ripple across the system. Pediatric specialty departments are already closing in some hospitals. Waitlists are growing, and not just for Medicaid kids—for all children, regardless of insurance coverage. Rural areas are especially hard-hit, and once a service disappears, it’s incredibly difficult to bring it back. This isn’t just a policy debate. It’s about real children. Real families. Real consequences. Medicaid cuts are not abstract budget line items. They are barriers to care, obstacles to safety, and roadblocks to children growing up healthy and whole.”

“I am deeply concerned about the impact Medicaid cuts will have on our patients directly, and on the ability of our hospitals and clinics to continue to provide life-saving and life-changing care. Health insurance changes the lives of people every day. I have to believe that if national leaders supporting this bill could see what I see every day in the clinic and the hospital, they would move past the cruelty of these proposed cuts and prioritize the dignity and care that all humans deserve,” said Dr. Margaret Isaac, Medical Director of the Adult Medicine Clinic and Co-Site Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

“My son has benefited exponentially from the support he has received through his Medicaid coverage. As conversations swell around cuts to Medicaid, my concerns swell for him,” said Sarah Brantley, the mother of a 34-year-old son, Paul—an avid sports fan and artist—who was born with developmental delays and on the autism spectrum, and relies on Medicaid for critical services. “Access to the features of this program have created opportunities for him to not only overcome intense medical and developmental challenges but, in fact, to thrive. He has found a sense of purpose and a place of pride in his community through supported employment opportunities and community inclusion. As his live-in provider, I am able to support his daily health, hygiene, and safety in his own home, thereby helping him prevent setbacks while preserving his dignity. His life has literally been saved by the interventions of Medicaid. Moreover, he has found community and empowerment in the journey. He has grown to have a sense of self pride and confidence I never dreamed possible for my son.”

“I am a Medicaid success story,” said MomsRising memberBronti Lemke, a single mom with a six-year-old son in Tacoma who is working toward her Bachelor’s degree. Medicaid and SNAP have been critical sources of support for her family as she pursues her education and works to build financial security for her family. “I was an addict and Medicaid – known as Apple Health here in Washington – provided the care, medications, and treatment that helped me get clean. Now, I am about to collect a degree from community college and I’ll be enrolling at UW, Tacoma this fall. Medicaid covered my son’s birth and we rely on it for preventive and routine care. I also rely on SNAP to feed my family, as food prices skyrocket. It terrifies me that Republicans in Congress are poised to slash these two programs and I don’t understand why anyone thinks more tax cuts for billionaires is more important than food and health care for families like mine. I want Congress to make child care more affordable, invest in schools, and continue supporting the health care and food we need.”

“It’s been really difficult to find a path out of homelessness. Not a lot of places will hire you without a degree, and the ones that will don’t pay enough to live on—and you can forget about health insurance. Because you’ve also got to think about the physical toll that 15 years of living outside takes on your body. About 2.5 years ago I was walking up a hill when I noticed that my calves were swelling. I didn’t think much of it at first but then my toes started to turn purple and eventually I was in so much pain I couldn’t walk. It got to the point that I thought I might not make it through this past winter—the cold made my legs a hundred times worse than before. It’s honestly hard to put that sort of pain into words. But I made it, thanks to my partner Brandie. All winter she gathered our wood, cooked all our meals, kept hand warmers on my feet. She got me to the other side of that winter. And she got me through that front door at the health clinic where I was finally able to get on Medicaid and get some care,” said Jeff Towle, a father, partner, and devoted Seahawks fan who is one of the nearly two million people in Washington state who relies on Medicaid for health care. “It was a very long time coming. And thank God for that, because it turns out I’d been walking a pretty high wire. I’d been living with deep vein thrombosis and an irregular heartbeat, two conditions that can kill, and I had no idea. It’s that simple: without Medicaid I’d be in a world of hurt. In fact I might not even be here today—in an apartment of my own, in this beautiful place that I love, finally starting to heal. Medicaid has helped give me another chance. The battle’s not over–I just had surgery on my legs yesterday, my second procedure, and my surgeon thinks there’s a good chance I’ll need another. They say I may have to stay on blood thinners for the rest of my life. And so having Medicaid is not a matter of convenience for me. It’s a matter of survival. That’s true for me, and it’s true for millions of other Americans who need this program. Don’t count us out.”

“I am opposed to the Medicaid cuts being considered in Congress, including the additional copays that are being discussed. I’ve relied on safety net programs since 2001 when I was a passenger in a car accident that injured my spinal cord and took me out of the workforce. I raised my three grandkids with my SSDI, since we lost my daughter, their mother Tiffany, who passed away in 2007 after losing her health care when she lost her job. Her story was the essential story in the passage of the Affordable Care Act from President Obama. Without Medicaid, we would not have been able to get the care we needed. I’m worried that if these cuts go through that my family and millions of other families like ours will lose access to their health care,” said Gina Owens, a member of Washington Community Action Network, and a single grandmother raising her three grandkids who all rely on Medicaid. “It deeply saddens me that my family and I have struggled to do the right thing for all of these years, only to have Congress tell us that we will need to pay higher copays out of our fixed income. A few dollars may not sound like much to the majority of people, but to many like me, it can be the difference between going hungry or having our electric bill cut off. I’ll call it like it is, cuts and increasing copays are robbing from the poor to give to the rich. Our country has so much wealth, there are enough resources for everyone to have their needs met.”

“Four years ago, I was able bodied working, had a full-time job. I was working for the federal government,” said Janelle Smith Dozier, who relies on SNAP and Social Security benefits to help make ends meet. “It was while at work where I got very dizzy and couldn’t hardly walk, couldn’t hardly think straight. I ended up going to the doctor and discovered I had a brain condition that required brain surgery. After the brain surgery, three months later, I had back surgery, and a year later, had another back surgery. So, I went from working full time, to becoming medically retired in my fifties and not knowing what to do. I had to not only get medically retired from work, I had to apply for disability through Social Security. All of these are foreign and new to me. I didn’t even know how they work because I was in my fifties and never thought I would be at that point. So, I ended up having to apply for food stamps. And to be honest with you, pride got in the way, and I didn’t want to do it, because I was always an able-bodied person who could take care of myself and my family. I ended up getting food stamps, and my Social Security hadn’t kicked in, so I was basically living off of $500 no income… Now I’m in a position almost four years later, and my Social Security and my benefits have kicked in. I’m still making less than $20,000 compared to almost $60,000, so it’s a huge, huge gap. The food stamps have always helped me. They have helped me and my family actually. The food bank has helped me with the space between getting the food stamps and my food supply running out, like three [weeks] into the month. Without the food stamps, I would have to dip into my Social Security and my retirement, which is pretty much tied up into taking care of myself outside of food, which would leave me with hardly no money to live on. Food stamps have helped me survive. They have helped my family survive.”

Senator Murray’s full remarks, as delivered at today’s press conference, are below and HERE:

“Well, good morning and welcome, and thank you to everyone that is here for this really important opportunity to talk about what is happening, coming at us from the President and the Republican Congress that is going to impact absolutely everybody.

“We’re going to see more people who are sick, more people who are starving, or tax breaks for the wealthiest people in the country. That is what the Republican agenda is.

“That is heart of the Big Ugly Betrayal they are moving heaven and earth to pass into law. And that is exactly what we are here to raise the alarm.

“We’re hearing a lot of empty Republican lies about their bill right now, a lot of desperate spin. That’s because the reality is catastrophic.

“If Republicans pass this monstrosity into law, billionaires like Trump and Musk are going to make away like bandits, while struggling families are going to have their entire world turned upside down. They are going to lose health care. They are going to lose food assistance. They are going to see costs go up and support they rely on go away.

“When it comes to health care, we are talking about 16 million people getting kicked off their insurance. From eight million people Republicans will cut off from Medicaid with new paperwork and red tape, to four million who will lose ACA coverage due to Republican sabotage, to another four million who are going to lose coverage if Republicans refuse to extend health care tax credits.

“That’s right. Republicans will do whatever it takes to extend tax cuts for big corporations and the richest of the rich. They will kick folks off their health care, shut down rural hospitals, take food off families’ tables—right off kids’ plates—you name it.

“But when it comes to health care tax credits Democrats passed for everyday Americans, when it comes to extending relief that is saving millions of families thousands of dollars a year? Crickets. Republicans simply can’t be bothered.

“In Washington state, this Republican disaster would take health care away from over 300,000 people minimum—200,000 from Medicaid alone. And yet, the Republicans whose constituents have the most to lose here—the people representing the areas most reliant on Medicaid, representing the people who are going to be hit the hardest, are full steam ahead on this! I hope everyone will ask them why, because I can’t figure out for the life of me.

“Voting for this bill is voting to kick seniors out of nursing homes. It is voting to shut down hospitals in rural areas. It is voting to take coverage away from kids with disabilities.

“But Republicans aren’t content to leave families without health care—they want them to go without food!

“Their Big Ugly Betrayal would make the biggest cut to SNAP in history—we’re talking around a quarter of a trillion dollars cut over the next ten years. It should be obvious, but that would be devastating for our country.

“From saddling states with unprecedented costs, to saddling families with even more red tape—the outcome is going to be less families getting SNAP benefits, and more kids going hungry.

“In Washington state alone, Republicans’ bill would put 150,000 people across our state at risk of losing food benefits. And the new red tape is even targeted at some of our most vulnerable families, because it expands work requirements to apply to seniors and parents with kids in school. That’s who Republicans want to take food away from.

“And again, I can’t emphasize enough: Republicans want to cut families off from SNAP and Medicaid—programs that give people a hand up in hard times—so they can give enormous handouts to the richest people and biggest companies in the country.

“As someone who knows what it is like to have your family fall on hard times, as someone whose family relied on food stamps briefly, as someone whose parents used to say they ‘crawled’ to Medicare—you can bet I am going to fight like hell to make sure this bill goes nowhere—except the trash bin.

“I know this won’t be an easy fight. But it is not an impossible fight, and it is absolutely an important one.

‘Because we saw what happened in 2017, when Republicans tried to rip away health care, when they tried to throw basic support for families into the wood chipper. The American people stood up. They shared their stories. They said, we do not want this. And their voices were heard. That effort failed.

“And I am going to do my darnedest to make our voices heard once again. I am going to make sure every Republican considering this bill cannot get off the hook trying to ignore exactly what they are voting for, and who they are voting against.

“And, to that end, I am joined today by some people who know, personally, from their work, and from their own experience—just how important these programs are, and just how catastrophic Republicans’ Big Ugly Betrayal would be.”

RECIPIENTS FROM SCOTLAND IN HM THE KING’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS LIST

Over 110 people from Scotland who have contributed to their community and country are celebrated in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List 2025 today.

1215 recipients in total have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a particular focus this year on those who have given their time to public service.

This year’s recipients include dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people.

Recipients from Scotland make up 9% of the total number of recipients receiving honours this year.

    Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

This year’s Birthday Honours List is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and service that exists in every corner of our country.

From community champions to cultural icons, each recipient reflects the very best of Britain. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them all.

The Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, said:

I am delighted to congratulate all those recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list, particularly John and Linda Norgrove on their well-deserved OBEs for their extraordinary humanitarian work in Afghanistan through the Linda Norgrove Foundation. Their dedication to improving the lives of Afghan women and girls, born from personal tragedy, exemplifies the very best of Scottish compassion and resolve.

Communities across Scotland benefit from the extraordinary effort of those honoured. From Dr Richa Sinha Chair of the Scottish Hindu society and their work to tackle Hinduphobia, to Zahrah Mahmood Chair of the Rambling Society to Heather Hall founding The Usual Place in Dumfries.

I would also like to extend special recognition to Scotland Office’s own Moira Vance on receiving her MBE. Moira’s unwavering commitment to public service has been instrumental in the work of our department for 44 years, and this honour reflects her exceptional contribution to the people of Scotland.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Afghan National Pleads Guilty to Plotting Election Day Terror Attack in the United States

    Source: US State of California

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, a native and citizen of Afghanistan, pleaded guilty today in federal court in Oklahoma City to two terrorism-related offenses: conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, and receiving, attempting to receive, and conspiring to receive firearms and ammunition in furtherance of a federal crime of terrorism.

“The defendant admits he planned and obtained firearms to carry out a violent terror attack on Election Day in 2024, a plot that was detected and disrupted through the good work of the FBI and our partners,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Let this serve as notice to anyone who tries to conduct attacks in our homeland for ISIS or any other terror group: we will find you and you’ll face American justice. I want to commend the FBI teams and our partners for their hard work and success in executing the mission.”

“Through incredible law enforcement effort and coordination, a violent terrorist attack on American soil was thwarted, and those responsible are being held accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester for the Western District of Oklahoma. “I commend the outstanding work by the FBI, our law enforcement partners, and prosecutors to diligently discover, thoroughly investigate, and completely foil this terror plot. These guilty pleas serve as an emphatic reminder that the Department of Justice and its law enforcement partners will aggressively pursue those who attempt to harm Americans through terrorist acts.”

“Thanks to outstanding work by the Oklahoma City Joint Terrorism Task Force, the defendant’s plan to kill innocent Americans in a terrorist attack on Election Day was stopped,” said Special Agent in Charge Doug Goodwater of the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office. “The FBI is grateful to all who stand beside us in our fight against terrorism. Together, we will continue to safeguard our communities from those who conspire against the United States.”

According to court documents, Tawhedi admitted that between June 2024 and October 2024 he conspired with at least one other individual to purchase two AK-47 rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition, and 10 magazines, with the intent to carry out a mass-casualty attack on or around Election Day, Nov. 5, 2024, on behalf of ISIS.  According to a criminal complaint affidavit filed in the case, Tawhedi communicated with an ISIS facilitator about his plan to purchase firearms for use in the terror plot, including asking the individual whether 500 rounds of ammunition would be sufficient.

Tawhedi and his co-conspirator, Abdullah Haji Zada, were arrested on Oct. 7, 2024, after purchasing the firearms and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee.  Zada, 18, pleaded guilty in April 2025 to the firearms offense in connection with his role in the terror plot and is awaiting sentencing. Zada, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, entered his guilty plea as an adult and will be sentenced as an adult.

At sentencing, Tawhedi faces a maximum penalty 20 years in prison for the material support charge and up to 15 years in prison for the firearms charge. Zada faces up to 15 years in federal prison. Upon completion of any sentence, Tawhedi and Zada will be permanently removed from the United States and barred from reentry under stipulated judicial orders of removal to Afghanistan. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The FBI Oklahoma City Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Marshals Service, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the Edmond Police Department, the Moore Police Department, the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Oklahoma City Community College Police Department, and the Oklahoma City University Police Department, is investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica L. Perry and Matt Dillon for the Western District of Oklahoma; Assistant U.S. Attorney Everett McMillian, who previously served in the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section; and Trial Attorney Jennifer Levy of the Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case. Trial Attorney Mark Stoneman of the Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section, who previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma, also assisted with the prosecution.

Barbier to 66 months imprisonment and payment of a mandatory $100 special assessment fee, after previously pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(C), and 841(b)(1)(D), as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(i).  Following imprisonment, RICHARDS, will be placed on supervised release for three (3) years.

According to court documents, on February 27, 2024, February Bureau of Investigation New Orleans Gang Task Force (NOGTF) members arrested RICHARDS pursuant to local parish attachments.  Upon arrest, RICHARDS was found in possession of marijuana, cocaine, a digital scale, and a Glock firearm.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.  On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Assistant United States Attorney Mike Trummel of the Violent Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
