  • MIL-OSI Canada: Statement on the conclusion of the food safety investigation related to the recall of various Silk and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages

    Source: Government of Canada News

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a statement related to the recent recall of Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

    October 29, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Food Inspection Agency

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the following statement related to the recent recall of Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination:

    “The CFIA is deeply saddened by the recent listeriosis outbreak associated with certain Silk and Great Value plant-based beverages. It extends heartfelt sympathies to the families of the three Canadians who tragically lost their lives and all those who have been affected by the outbreak.

    With the conclusion of CFIA’s food safety investigation related to contaminated products from Danone Canada’s third-party manufacturing plant Joriki Inc. in Pickering, we are sharing the details of the findings.

    Initiation of CFIA investigation

    On June 20, 2024, our investigation began when Public Health Ontario informed us of an outbreak of listeriosis illness and an initial detection of Listeria monocytogenes, in a sample of Silk unsweetened coconut milk. Over the following days, CFIA worked closely with public health partners to confirm the link between the product and the illnesses and deaths.

    As soon as the link was confirmed, on July 8, 2024, a recall warning was issued for several Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, and the affected plant lines were immediately shut down.

    As part of the recall being issued, the CFIA visited the Joriki plant in Pickering on 6 occasions, while verifying the affected products were removed from the market. The CFIA continues to monitor the recall’s effectiveness.

    Investigation outcomes and results

    Since then, Danone Canada and Joriki Inc. and the CFIA conducted product and environmental tests. The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the facility was confirmed on July 9, 2024.

    The investigation was not able to confirm the primary source of the contamination within the establishment, which is not uncommon with investigations regarding pasteurized products like plant-based beverages – listeria cannot survive pasteurization – however, cross-contamination could have occurred after processing.

    Joriki is required to follow federal laws to ensure the safety of the products they sell. Health Canada’s Policy on Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods also outlines how plants like Joriki should have strict controls in place to prevent Listeria contamination.

    During the course of its investigation, the CFIA discovered that the facility did not properly implement environmental swabbing and finished product testing in adherence to Health Canada’s Policy on Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods, which is why the CFIA is closely following up to ensure corrective actions are completed and necessary safety measures are in place.

    Based on CFIA’s 2021 risk assessment which considered things like scientific data, type of food, and manufacturing processes, the Joriki establishment was not considered high-risk before the Listeria monocytogenes contamination. As such, the CFIA did not conduct a licence inspection prior to its investigation, however, it had visited the plant in response to consumer complaints.

    The consumer complaints received in 2018, 2019 and in 2023-2024 were related to the possible presence of allergens, off-taste, and mould. There is no causal link between mould and listeria.

    In all of these consumer complaints cases, the CFIA followed up with the consumer, the retailer, the distributor, and the manufacturer, and where required, Joriki was provided with corrective actions to be undertaken. All necessary action was taken by the establishment to resolve the complaints.

    The CFIA’s enforcement tools and next steps

    As a result of the food safety investigation, production at Joriki Inc. in Pickering has been fully halted, and significant cleanup and renovations are underway. Manufacturing will not resume until all necessary safety measures are in place, and until we are confident that the risk of contamination has been eliminated.

    CFIA inspectors are closely monitoring the situation, continuing to conduct regular visits to ensure that corrective actions are completed before production can restart.

    When businesses fail to comply with their obligations under the Safe Food for Canadians Act and the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations with respect to ensuring the safety of food, the CFIA has several enforcement tools at its disposal such as monetary penalties and suspending or cancellation of licences.

    The CFIA will continue to monitor the Pickering facility’s progress and will update the public on any further actions taken through our website.

    More to learn

    In 2022, the CFIA had completed a three-year survey of plant-based milk alternatives and found them to be generally safe, with no Listeria monocytogenes found in the samples taken.

    While Listeria monocytogenes has typically been linked to products like ready-to-eat meats and unpasteurized dairy products, this is the first time plant-based beverages have been linked to illness in Canada.

    This outbreak shows that new risks can and do emerge as scientific evidence evolves, and the CFIA takes them seriously.

    The CFIA’s Inspector General has already begun an initial review of the circumstances surrounding this recall, and to identify risks that could lead to similar incidents. Additionally, the Inspector General will be inspecting manufactured food establishments including those producing plant-based products, verifying that establishments are inspected appropriately under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, and analyzing consumer complaint trends to enhance risk modeling and inspection frequency.

    The findings from this review and investigation, coupled with advancements in science, will inform our updates to the risk models, enhancing our ability to safeguard the health of Canadians. While it is the responsibility of food producers to ensure the food they produce is safe, the CFIA will continue to work to protect Canadians.”

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) touches the lives of all Canadians in so many positive ways. Each day, hard-working CFIA employees – including inspectors, veterinarians and scientists – inspect food for safety risks, protect plants from pests and invasive species, and respond to animal diseases that could threaten Canada’s national herd and human health. Guided by science-based decision-making and modern regulations, the Agency works tirelessly to ensure access to safe and healthy food in Canada, and support access to international markets for our high-quality agricultural products. • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: You Said… We Did… Lifestyles

    Source: City of Liverpool

    A key part of Liverpool City Council’s improvement journey is reaching out and listening to our residents; as part of that initiative we have had some great feedback which has led to some changes which will hopefully raise fitness levels, without putting an extra squeeze on finances.

    Residents told us they can’t afford gym membership in the three of the most deprived areas of the city – we listened to that feedback and we have introduced the Neighbourhood Platinum site-specific membership will launch on Friday 1 July as part of a three-month pilot scheme which will see membership costs reduced at Austin Rawlinson, Everton Park and Park Road Lifestyles.

    It is hoped by reducing costs, it will increase physical activity in these areas and improve life expectancy – which is currently 3.3 years lower than the English average.

    For £16.99 a month (a 55 per cent reduction), members will be able to use all of the facilities in their chosen centre, making the most of the pool, gyms and the varied classes on offer in that individual location.  There is no contract commitment and members will be able to renew on a monthly basis.

    Residents also told us the opening hours weren’t helpful, we’ve listened to that and from July Lifestyles Park Road and Everton will be open for longer:

    Lifestyles Park Road

    Monday to Friday – 8am to 8.30pm

    Saturday & Sunday – 8am to 2pm

    Lifestyles Everton Park

    Monday to Friday – 7.30am to 9pm

    Saturday – 9am to 1pm

    Sunday – 7.30am to 1pm

     For the latest information head to the official Lifestyles web pages.

    Liverpool’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Visitor Economy, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

    “It’s no exaggeration to say our Lifestyles Centres offer a lifeline for so many.  The figures about deprivation and life expectancy are both shocking and disturbing and make us even more committed to making it as easy as possible for people to get active, as we know this has a positive impact on our physical and mental wellbeing.

    “I’m a Lifestyles member and have spent time visiting the different centres across the city, chatting to other members and finding out what they like and don’t like about the service we currently offer. There is a huge amount of love for these community assets and we should make them more accessible to all our residents, and the this trial is a good way to do that.

    “Clearly a one-size-fits-all membership price does not work – the cost of living crisis is already starting to bite and we need to look at ways in which we can help residents get active at a reasonable and achievable price.

    “Thanks to everyone who has engaged with us over recent months – we do listen and we do take action where we can and I really hope we see some great results from the Neighbourhood Platinum trial which will help to turn the tide on health inequalities experienced in parts of our city.”

    Lifestyles General Manager, Mark Lancaster, said:

    “We want our centres to meet their full potential and increasing opening hours gives people more opportunity to use the facilities.

    “In recent months we have seen a rise in demand for swim time, particularly at the weekends, so extending the timetable will allow us to meet this need.

    “We always encourage feedback from members – and potential members – and we hope these latest changes will support residents in their ambition to lead healthier and happier lives and at the same time support their local centre.”

    Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister underscored that in the past decade, the country had witnessed the beginning of a new chapter in the health sector with the amalgamation of knowledge of Ayurveda with modern medicine. He added that the All India Institute of Ayurveda has been a focal point of this new chapter. Shri Narendra Modi remarked that seven years ago, on Ayurveda Day, he had the privilege to dedicate the first phase of the institute to the country, and today, with the blessings of Lord Dhanvantari, he was inaugurating the second phase.

    Underlining that the success of Ayush is transforming not only the health sector but also the economy, the Prime Minister stated that the Ayush manufacturing sector has grown from USD 3 billion in 2014 to nearly USD 24 billion today, an 8-fold increase in just 10 years.

These results are highly encouraging, and I am confident that this awareness will continue to grow. Prime Minister, you will be pleased to know that Ayurveda Day is celebrated today in over 150 countries”. The Ayush minister said that the efforts of the Prime Minister have significantly contributed to the global prominence of Ayurveda in health and since 2014 Ayurveda has reached new heights under his exemplary leadership.

    The Union Minister of State for Ayush added that “With the support of Ayurveda students, teachers, and professionals, we are launching a nationwide campaign called ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan’. Through this campaign, based on the principles of Ayurveda, we can design an ideal lifestyle for every individual and conduct risk analysis to prevent diseases before they strike. In this direction, a positive approach can redefine our health sector.”

    Thanking the Prime Minister for inaugurating the second phase of AIIA, Prof. (Dr.) Tanuja Nesari, Director, AIIA, said, “On this auspicious day of Dhanvantari Jayanti, the day of worshiping Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of health, we seek blessings for health as the greatest wealth. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, organized an open house discussion in hybrid mode on ‘Sports and Human Rights: Safeguarding the Rights and Well-being of Sportspersons’ at its premises in New Delhi today. Chairing the discussion, Acting Chairperson, Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani said that maintaining human values is the hallmark of a sportsperson’s spirit. Therefore, respecting the human rights of the sportspersons and ensuring protection thereof through an institutionalized mechanism is necessary for better performance of the country’s talent in sports.

    She highlighted the importance of understanding the intersectionality between athlete rights and the role of institutions in safeguarding them. The concept of intersectionality can help policy makers and sport programmers understand how different types of discrimination – like racism, homophobia, and ableism – combine to prevent athletes particularly women from participating in sport.

    The Acting Chairperson also stressed strengthening the judicial mechanisms in addressing any violations of athlete rights besides the rehabilitation of sportspersons in case of abuse and addressing their mental health concerns.

    NHRC, India Director General (Investigation), Shri Ajay Bhatnagar emphasized zero tolerance for sexual abuse of sportspersons. He highlighted how institutions, especially those in authority, are more accountable for safeguarding athletes.

    Earlier, the NHRC, India Joint Secretary, Shri Devendra Kumar Nim gave an overview of the three technical sessions of the open house which included ‘Rehabilitation of Sportspersons after Incidents of Abuse,’ ‘Mental Health of Sportspersons in India’ and ‘Institutional Frameworks Required to Safeguard Interests of Sportspersons.’

    Some of the suggestions that emerged from the discussion were as follows:

    • It is necessary to have coaches having training in clinical psychology to prepare the athletes better;

    • Streamline insurance benefits to athletes suffering sports injuries;

    • Bring awareness among athletes to report sexual abuse;

    • Ensure action on complaints of sexual harassment through functional institutional mechanisms in all sports bodies;

    • Strengthen institutional mechanisms to support para-athletes;

    • Strengthen institutional mechanisms within various sports bodies to develop social equitability among sportspersons from diverse backgrounds and marginalized communities;

    The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Netaji Subhas Sports Authority of India at Patiala, National Centre for Sports Science and Research, National Sports University, Imphal, Wrestling Federation of India, National Rifle Association of India, All India Kabaddi Federation, Sports and Rights Alliance, Switzerland, WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, Humans for Sports, UK, GoSports Foundation based in Bangalore, India and Sports Injury Centre at the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Urgent need for humanitarian corridors to Gaza for basic necessities and the case of the NGO Music for Peace – E-002063/2024

    Source: European Parliament

    14.10.2024

    Question for written answer  E-002063/2024
    to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
    Rule 144
    Brando Benifei (S&D), Alessandra Moretti (S&D), Annalisa Corrado (S&D), Marco Tarquinio (S&D), Giorgio Gori (S&D), Cecilia Strada (S&D), Lucia Annunziata (S&D)

    The restrictions imposed by the Israeli Government on humanitarian access to Gaza are increasingly becoming a problem for the survival of civilians and constituting a violation of international humanitarian law.

    One such example is the NGO Music for Peace, a civil society organisation registered with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and active in Gaza for many years. One of its shipments – 80 tonnes of essential goods, with a total value of approximately EUR 800 000 – has remained blocked at the NGO’s headquarters in Genoa, Italy since June 2024, due to the lack of support from national and international stakeholders.

    On 1 October 2024, the NGO submitted its packing list to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), via the United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS), but the application remains pending. On 2 October, the NGO was then informed of the new restrictive regulations introduced by the Israeli authorities.

    Given the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza and the principles of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their 1977 Additional Protocols, can the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy say whether:

    He intends to call for the opening of humanitarian corridors as a matter of urgency to allow and facilitate the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza?

    14.10.2024

    Question for written answer  E-002062/2024
    to the Commission
    Rule 144
    Fredis Beleris (PPE)

    Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Sunday 22 September 2024, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced his country’s plans to establish a sovereign Muslim microstate in Tirana.

    According to the information made available so far, this autonomous and independent state will be called Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order. It will have its own diplomatic documents, borders and a separate administrative structure. The new state within the Albanian state will only grant citizenship to Shia Muslims, members of the Sufi religious community.

    In view of the above:

    • 1.What is the Commission’s take on this potential new state and whether its creation is in breach of the agreements made in the context of Albania’s path to EU accession, and if it is, what additional criteria can be introduced?
    • 2.Does the creation of such a state, where there will be no elections, meet the Copenhagen political criteria, which every country must satisfy, namely stability of institutions that guarantee democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities?
    • 3.What diplomatic moves will the Commission make to ensure the peaceful coexistence of all religious communities in Albania?

    WWF Programme Centre Promotes celebration of Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali: A Green, Plastic-Free Festival for a Sustainable Future”

    Mission LiFE’s Green Diwali: Embracing Clean, Eco-Friendly Celebrations for Lasting Environmental Impact

    Posted On: 29 OCT 2024 6:46PM by PIB Delhi

    The concept of Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali emphasizes the importance of a clean and eco-friendly celebration that reiterates the core principles of Mission LiFE that aims to protect and preserve the environment, bringing about a pro-planet behavioural change in lifestyle. This initiative aims to instil a sense of responsibility towards the environment and communities by sensitizing and motivating individuals to opt for locally made products, embrace a Diwali free from single-use plastic and prioritize pre and post Diwali cleanliness. By doing so, it seeks to foster a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to the festival.

    In this context, WWF Programme Centre-Resource Partner, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, GoI is disseminating awareness about Green Diwali celebration that would symbolize green, clean and plastic free Diwali through an infographic poster that contains a Green Diwali pledge. The mandate of Programme Centre at WWF-India, MoEF&CC is ‘Wildlife Conservation (including species and habitat) using geospatial techniques’. Programme Centre (PC) EIACP (Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme), Resource Partner (RP), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, GoI at WWF-India was set up for collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information in order to support and promote research, development and innovation among decision-makers, researchers, academicians, policy planners, research scientists & and other stakeholders.

    This activity highlights a crucial step in integrating environmental consciousness into cultural practices, promoting sustainable festivities, and actively involving citizens in India’s climate agenda. Promoting a green, clean, cracker-free and plastic-free Diwali maintains the spirit of the festival while minimizing environmental impact. It aligns with traditional values of purity, light, and joy, showing that festivals can evolve to become more eco-conscious without compromising their cultural essence. The Green Diwali campaign resonates with India’s commitments under climate change agreements (like the Paris Accord) and sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

    Public participation through pledges encourages community-driven solutions. Individuals who engage with such campaigns may integrate green practices in their lifestyle, fostering long-term environmental stewardship.

    Background

    Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) was launched by the Prime Minister on 20th October, 2022 at Kevadia, Gujarat and focuses on bringing about behaviour changes individuals through simple easy to do actions. Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, GoI (MoEF&CC) is the nodal Ministry for national level coordination and implementation of Mission LiFE. As part of their implementation efforts, the ministry has mobilized their activities with LiFE and spread awareness about sustainable actions that individuals can undertake. Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) was also among one of the four important focus sectors of the G-20 Summit.

    As envisioned by Prime Minister at the World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow at COP26 and launched on 20 October 2022, Mission LiFE aims to follow a three-pronged strategy for changing our collective approach towards sustainability. First is by nudging individuals to practise simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in their daily lives (demand); second is by enabling industries and markets to respond swiftly to the changing demand (supply) and; third is to influence government and industrial policy to support both sustainable consumption and production (policy).

    The probationers of Indian Trade Service and Indian Cost Accounts Service called on the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (October 29, 2024).

    Speaking on the occasion, the President said that with a rapid economic growth of 8.2 percent in the year 2023-24, the Indian economy has been demonstrating resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges. India needs to attract private investment to increase the levels of per capita income and to get to continued high levels of growth, even amidst a turbulent global environment. Several initiatives of the government of India are creating an enabling ecosystem for growth.

  • MIL-OSI: RBAZ Bancorp, Inc. Announces Unaudited Financial Results For the Quarter Ending September 30, 2024

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

    PHOENIX, Oct. 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — RBAZ Bancorp, Inc. (OTCIQ: RBAZ) (the “Company”), parent company of Republic Bank of Arizona (the “Bank” or “RBAZ”), announced a consolidated net income of $981,000, or $0.55 per share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2024 and $2,586,000, or $1.45 per share, for the nine months ended September 30, 2024 as compared to a consolidated net income of $748,000, or $0.41 per share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2023 and $1,771,000, or $0.98 per share, for the nine months ended September 30, 2023.

    President and CEO Brian Ruisinger stated “I am pleased with our strong Q3 earnings performance as we achieved a 22% increase in our net interest margin while the increase in overhead costs was nominal at 2% from the year ago quarter. Net interest margin was bolstered by premium loan pricing that more than offset the increase in cost of deposits over the same period. Additionally, non-interest income was up 26% over the same quarter from a year ago. RBAZ experienced a surge in loan growth in Q3, which necessitated a commensurate increase in our allowance for credit losses, driving the provision expense recorded for the quarter.”

    Mr. Ruisinger continued, “During the quarter, the Federal Reserve executed its first rate cut in over four years. As a result of this signaling from the Fed, we have seen both loan and deposit rates begin to drop in the Phoenix market. RBAZ management closely monitors our peer and competitor banks and will adjust rates accordingly to remain competitive in our market while maintaining a healthy net interest margin.”

    Mr. Ruisinger concluded, “At a Special Shareholder meeting held on August 22nd, shareholders approved the transaction to join forces with Pima Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Tucson, AZ, that was announced on May 16th of this year. Our coming together will create a premier banking experience in Maricopa County as RBAZ’s commercial expertise will be combined with Pima’s strength in consumer products. This proposed transaction is a great outcome for our loyal shareholders and customers and is pending regulatory approval. Additional information will be provided once approvals are obtained, and a closing date is established.”

    September 30, 2024 Company Highlights Include:

    • Total loans of $216,451,000 increased $14,622,000, or 7.2%, from December 31, 2023. This increase consisted of $40,976,000 in new loan originations and advances on construction lines of credit, offset by $25,879,000 in loan maturities and participations sold. Advances and repayments on commercial lines of credit and normal payment attrition comprise the balance of the loan activity in the first three quarters of 2024.
    • Total deposits of $259,902,000 increased $31,730,000, or 13.9%, from December 31, 2023 and related entirely to core deposit generation. The increase in core deposits was the result of deepening of existing relationships and cultivation of new banking relationships. Liquidity continues to be a top priority for the remainder of 2024.
    • Total interest income increased $694,000 to $4,653,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2024 outpacing total interest income of $3,959,000 for the same period of the prior year equating to an increase of 17.5%.
    • Cost of deposits increased to 2.11% for the quarter ended September 30, 2024 from 1.93% for the quarter ended September 30, 2023 representing an increase of 18 basis points. For two consecutive quarters, the increase in cost of deposits over the prior year comparative quarter has been at a declining rate evidencing stabilization in the interest rate environment.
    • Total non-interest expense increased $45,000 to $1,881,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2024 compared to $1,836,000 for the same period of the prior year resulting primarily from additional full-time employees and the addition of the new Scottsdale branch and conversion of the existing location to an administrative office, all of which took place in Q4 2023.
