Hezbollah believes that the civilian casualties they generate through their use of human shields will trigger international pressure against and demonization of our Israeli allies, which has happened far too often, including the inexcusable complicity and participation of Biden-Harris officials. Since October, Iran has been using its terrorist groups across the Middle East, including Hamas and Hezbollah, to wage war against Israel.     Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins applauded the passage by the House of Representatives of two bipartisan bills she authored that would cement and build on the important progress that has been made to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer’s disease. The National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) Reauthorization and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act (AAIA) now head to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
    “We have made tremendous progress in recent years to boost funding for Alzheimer’s research, which holds great promise to end this disease that has had a devastating effect on millions of Americans and their families,” said Senator Collins, a founder and co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. “These two bills will maintain our momentum and make sure that we do not take our foot off the pedal just as our investments in basic research are beginning to translate into potential new treatments. We must not let Alzheimer’s to be one of the defining diseases of our children’s generation as it has ours.”
    More than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s costs our nation an astonishing $360 billion per year, including $231 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid. If we continue along this trajectory, Alzheimer’s is projected to claim the minds of 13.8 million seniors by 2060 and nearly surpass $1 trillion in annual costs by 2050. In 2022, family caregivers provided 18 billion hours of unpaid care for loved ones with dementia.
    In 2011, Senator Susan Collins authored the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) with then-Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN).  NAPA convened a panel of experts, who created a coordinated strategic national plan to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer’s disease by 2025. The law is set to expire soon and must be reauthorized to ensure that research investments remain coordinated, and their impact is maximized.
    The NAPA Reauthorization Act would:
    Reauthorize NAPA through 2035 and modernize the legislation to reflect strides that have been made to understand the disease, such as including a new focus on promoting healthy aging and reducing risk factors.
    Update language in recognition of the need to include underserved populations, including individuals with Down syndrome, who are at increased risk for Alzheimer’s as they age.
    This bill is now endorsed by the National Down Syndrome Society, the National Down Syndrome Congress, and LuMind IDSC Foundation.
    The Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act would:
    Continue through 2035 a requirement that the Director of the National Institutes of Health submit an annual budget to Congress estimating the funding necessary to fully implement NAPA’s research goals.
    Only two other areas of biomedical research – cancer and HIV/AIDS – have been the subject of special budget development aimed at speeding discovery.

    Senator Collins authored the NAPA Reauthorization Act with Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act with Senator Ed Markey (D-MA). Both bills are cosponsored by Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).

    Padilla Announces Over $220 Million for I-680 Improvements and Central Valley High-Speed Rail

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) announced that the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will receive a combined $220.6 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to improve mobility along the Interstate 680 (I-680) corridor and to construct a high-speed rail station in Madera. The investments were made through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) Program.
    Over $166 million will go toward Contra Costa’s INNOVATE 680 Program to complete the northbound I-680 express lane gap from California State Route (SR) 24 to SR-242 and to convert the existing northbound high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane from SR-242 to north of Arthur Road into an express lane. The project will also construct a braided ramp system between the North Main Street and Treat Boulevard interchanges in Walnut Creek to address an existing bottleneck caused by weaving, implement Coordinated Adaptive Ramp Metering for a 19-mile segment of Northbound I-680, and include a Caltrans truck scale/weigh station.
    The Madera High-Speed Rail Station Project will receive over $54 million to construct a high-speed rail station for the Merced-Bakersfield California High-Speed Rail Interim Service. The project will design and construct the Madera Station through improvements at the relocated Madera Amtrak Station, including new platforms, trackwork, an overhead contact system, a bus depot, expanded auto parking, an access roadway network, a multi-use path, and a station building.
    “Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, California commuters will get where they need to go faster, and we will improve connectivity across the Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley,” said Senator Padilla. “Decongesting I-680 is essential to preventing delays and bolstering driver safety and efficiency along this busy corridor. The Madera high-speed rail station is a key component of the upcoming Merced-Bakersfield high-speed rail service and will create better transportation options, good-paying construction jobs, and cleaner air for Central Valley residents.”

    Senator Padilla has secured billions for California infrastructure improvements from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including for high-speed rail. Last year, Padilla supported the Department of Transportation’s announcement of $3.1 billion for the California High-Speed Rail Authority, as well as over $200 million for the agency from the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program. He and the late Senator Dianne Feinstein previously announced $25 million for the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Merced Extension Design Project through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program. Additionally, Padilla announced $28.94 million last year for the Contra Costa Transportation Authority to implement five safety projects in areas with the largest concentration of pedestrian crashes. He also championed more than $283 million from the Mega Program for the Port of Long Beach to complete the final phase of the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility by expanding the North and South Rail Yards.

    An employee hired on a permanent contract after having completed 3 fixed-term contracts is dismissed during her trial period. She contests the termination of the contract before the judge and requests that the trial period be declared null and void given the 3 fixed-term contracts she previously completed.

    The Court of Appeal dismissed the employee’s application. In its view, the first two fixed-term contracts (which took place in May and June) were not a continuation of the third fixed-term contract (which took place in August) and the permanent contract concluded afterwards. According to the Court of Appeal, there was therefore no continuous employment relationship between the employee and her employer. It considered that the employer was still within the time limit to terminate the permanent contract.

    The Court of Cassation overturns and annuls the decision rendered by the Court of Appeal. According to it, the employee carried out her duties without any functional discontinuity. Thus, she had the same working relationship with the employer during these different contracts.

    The duration of the 3 fixed-term contracts must therefore be deducted from the trial period provided for in the permanent contract. The dismissal is unfair.

    “We, the G7+ Ministerial Group, met on the margins of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly [UNGA] to reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s brutal and unjust attacks on Ukraine and its energy infrastructure.

    “We reaffirm our strong commitment to the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and to focus on the key priorities needed to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on international law, including the UN Charter and its principles.

    “We strongly condemn Russia’s continuous missile and drone strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and cities across Ukraine, which have escalated since March 2024 and severely threaten Ukraine’s energy security and the Ukrainian people’s access to critical services, including electricity, heat and water, during the cold winter months, which could be the harshest for Ukraine since at least its independence. We highlight the regional implications of such attacks, notably on the Republic of Moldova’s energy security. Russia must end its war of aggression and pay for the damage it has caused.

    “We recommit to supporting Ukraine’s immediate and medium- and long-term recovery and reconstruction in line with its path toward the EU and to working to involve our private sectors and local governments in the sustainable economic and social recovery of Ukraine.     “We acknowledge the need for international assistance to protect energy infrastructure from attacks, including through the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defence capabilities by the committed countries, and reaffirm our readiness to continue providing such assistance.

    “We condemn Russia’s seizure and continued control and militarization of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which threatens energy security.  We emphasize that any use of nuclear energy and nuclear installations must be safe, secured, safeguarded and environmentally sound. With reference to the UNGA resolution of July 11 entitled Safety and Security of Nuclear Facilities of Ukraine, Including the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, we stress that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant must return to the full sovereign control of Ukraine in line with IAEA principles and under its independent supervision.

    “We are convinced that rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system in the short- and long-term is in the interest of enhancing global energy security and sustainability.

    “We welcome further commitments to providing funding and in-kind support to address the Ukrainian energy sector’s most urgent needs, including repairs of damaged power plants and district heating systems; deployment of new, distributed power generation; emergency backup power for critical services; and passive protection for energy infrastructure.     In line with the long-standing and friendly partnership between both Canada and Egypt, built over the course of 70 years of diplomatic relations, both sides reaffirmed the mutual desire to enhance cooperation between our two countries.

    Ministers Joly and Abdelatty stressed the need to advance and strengthen bilateral relations, including economic and commercial interactions, as well as to promote tourism and support greater people-to-people interactions. Both ministers agreed there is much that can be achieved between the Governments of Canada and Egypt by collaborating together with a view to continuing to build together a reinvigorated platform of bilateral cooperation in all its dimensions.

    To that end, both Ministers discussed the issue of mutual facilitation of travel and tourism between both countries, along with the possibility of waiving the requirement of prior-entry visas for Canadian citizens travelling to Egypt. Minister Abdelatty agreed that Egypt will take this step very soon, and it will be announced in due time. Minister Joly thanked him for this positive signal, in the spirit of Egyptian-Canadian friendship, and as a genuine demonstration of the two countries’ partnership, which is being celebrated in 2024 as they mark 70 years of diplomatic relations.

    Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, co-founder of Malala Fund, and Honorary Canadian citizen Malala Yousafzai, on the margins of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

    Prime Minister Trudeau and Ms. Yousafzai discussed the state of gender equality around the world. They expressed their shared concern for women and girls living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, including the 1.4 million girls who are being denied access to education.

    The two agreed that the rollback of the rights of women and girls demands an urgent and co-ordinated response from the international community, including through increased support for women’s rights organizations. Prime Minister Trudeau thanked Ms. Yousafzai for her international leadership on advancing access to quality education for women and girls, and he reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to continue promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls globally.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Police Urge Drivers to Adhere to Speed Limits Following RBT Station in Adelaide River

    Northern Territory Police conducted an early morning Random Breath Testing (RBT) station on the Stuart Highway at Adelaide River yesterday, where 139 drivers were tested over a two-hour period, all returning negative results for alcohol.

    While Batchelor police were pleased with the responsible behaviour regarding drink driving, concerns remain about the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit in the area. Nine drivers were issued infringement notices for speeding, highlighting the ongoing issue of reckless driving.

    Acting Remote Sergeant Brittany Stuart expressed concern, stating, “Once again, Northern Territory Police can be anywhere, at any time. Drivers need to slow down, keep their focus on the road, and avoid distractions like electronic devices. Too many drivers this morning demonstrated a poor attitude towards speed limits.

    “Adelaide River is a built-up area with a 60km/h speed limit, and there’s sufficient signage in place to warn drivers. Early in the morning, the community sees increased pedestrian traffic as residents are out for their exercise. Speeding through this area puts lives at risk. We’ve already lost too many lives on our roads this year—50 so far—and we do not want to see that number rise due to poor choices behind the wheel.”

    Northern Territory Police continue to remind all drivers that adherence to speed limits is crucial to ensuring the safety of all road users.

    Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) introduced H.R. 9721, the Ensuring Access to Whistleblower Protections Act, a vital piece of legislation aimed at closing gaps in whistleblower protections for employees of HUD contractors. The bill ensures that contracts pre-dating 2013, of which many are currently still lacking key whistleblower protections, will be updated to include Section 4712 anti-retaliation provisions when they undergo modifications.

    “Whistleblowers play a crucial role in safeguarding taxpayer dollars by exposing fraud, waste, and abuse,” said Rep. De La Cruz. “No employee should fear retaliation for doing the right thing, yet thousands of HUD contracts leave employees vulnerable. This legislation is a critical step toward ensuring that all employees have the protections they deserve.”

    This bill follows a July 2024 oversight letter led by Rep. De La Cruz and nine other members of the Financial Services Committee, urging HUD to take immediate action to address this gap. The HUD Office of Inspector General highlighted these concerns in a May 2023 management alert, and HUD has since indicated support for a legislative solution.

    The Ensuring Access to Whistleblower Protections Act clarifies what contract activities mandate that HUD must make the best effort to incorporate whistleblower protections in pre-2013 contracts, providing long-overdue security to employees who disclose wrongdoing.

    WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today joined Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and a bicameral group of more than 42 colleagues in urging Pres. Joe Biden to hold the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) accountable for the mismanagement and misplacement of thousands of unaccompanied migrant children.

    “As a result of your open-borders policies, overseen by Vice President Harris, who was tasked with ‘stemming the migration’ at our border with Mexico, more than 500,000 unaccompanied alien children (UACs) have crossed the southwest border without a parent or guardian to provide care since you took office, a massive increase when compared to previous administrations. . . . Your Administration also fails them when they arrive in the United States by rushing them out of the custody of your Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) into the hands of unvetted sponsors who often continue to exploit and abuse them,” the lawmakers wrote.

    “Even as the trafficking business and the number of children entering the U.S. surged, HHS ORR cut back significantly on background checks and vetting procedures to speed up the process, despite knowing children were being trafficked through HHS ORR’s UAC program. Your Administration likewise continued Vice President Harris’s longtime priority of cutting back on information sharing between HHS ORR and law enforcement related to unaccompanied children and sponsors,” they continued.

    The lawmakers also detailed a list of the ORR’s negligence in handling migrant children, including its failure to comply with Congressional subpoenas or provide information, such as the whereabouts of UACs, to the Department of Homeland Security.

    “HHS’s failure to ensure UACs are in appropriate placements and to adequately vet sponsors is harmful not only to the UACs, but also to American citizens. . . . HHS must stop its cover-up and cooperate with law enforcement and Congress to end this crisis and protect unaccompanied children and the American people,” the lawmakers concluded. 

    In Dec. 2023, Sen. Kennedy urged the Biden-Harris administration’s HHS to protect vulnerable migrant children by abandoning its planned rule to allow minors to be placed with sponsors who did not undergo background checks or other safeguards.

    The federal assistance includes grants for individuals to recover from the storms, as well as take hazard mitigation measures to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from future natural disasters.  The counties eligible for the assistance are Cook, Fulton, Henry, St. Clair, Washington, Will, and Winnebago Counties.

    Washington, D.C.— The U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to a Senate Resolution designating September 15-21, 2024, as National Forensic Science Week.  The resolution, introduced by U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Alex Padilla (D-California), and co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), recognizes the role forensic science plays in the investigation, prosecution and conviction of crimes, as well as exoneration of the innocent.

    Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and U.S. Representative Russ Fulcher (R-Idaho) sent a letter to U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Chief Randy Moore demanding an update on the investigation to determine the origin of the Elkhorn Fire.

    “This investigation, which was originally meant to take only a few weeks, has been ongoing for well over a year now[. . .],” wrote the lawmakers.  “For victims of wildfire, life does not move on after the fire burns out.  Losses must be documented, insurance claims filed, and to the extent possible, infrastructure that was destroyed must be rebuilt.  Property and business owners have been unable to file insurance claims – their recovery held hostage by the ongoing, and unusually long, USFS investigation.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Rockfall closes SH6 Haast Pass today

    Rock Shelter Otira Gorge, SH73 – open overnight now, work at McGrath Creek Bridge postponed a week.

    NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) re-opened SH73 between Otira and Arthur’s Pass overnight from the past weekend. An additional project at McGrath Creek bridge, which would have affected night travellers this week, has been pushed out to next week.

    Rock Shelter remediation continues for four more weeks

    SH73 has been closed overnight and with restricted hours daytimes since the end of August after rockfall began overspilling the Rock Shelter in the Otira Gorge onto the traffic lane. The daytime travel delays continue for the next four weeks, with traffic passing between Otira and Arthur’s Pass at the top of each hour 9 am to 5 pm.

    • On weekends and overnights SH73 between Otira and Arthur’s Pass will be open unrestricted unless other work or weather conditions cause a change.
    • Work at McGrath Creek bridge has been rescheduled to next week at night, Sunday 29 September to Monday, 7 October.  There will be up to one-hour delays between 8pm and 6am.  The road will be open on the hour to clear traffic, with vehicles queued either side of the bridge work site.
    • This work is subject to weather and may be rescheduled.

    The Lewis Pass via Waipara and Reefton, SH7, is the alternative route adding around an hour to the journey between Canterbury and the West Coast.

    • Any changes to route availability will be updated on the Journey Planner at all times.

    • Electronic signs at each end of SH73 in places like Kumara Junction and Springfield will let people know the open hours that day.
    • An update will be provided each Friday to confirm the closures for the following week.

    NZTA understands that this work at the Rock Shelter and coming up at McGrath Creek Bridge is disruptive and appreciates people’s understanding and patience while we make this route safe and get the highway back to normal operations for the summer.

    A man has been remanded in custody after being charged over a series of vehicle fires in central Auckland.

    Police have been investigating the suspicious fires in the vicinity of the Auckland Domain since 18 September.

    Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend, from Auckland City’s Crime Squad, says at least four fires have been under investigation.

    The most recent incident, on 20 September, occurred when two vehicles were targeted on Park Road at around 9.15pm.

    Earlier fires occurred within the vicinity of the Auckland Domain on 18, 19 and 20 September.

    “The vehicles suffered varying degrees of damage, and it’s fortunate that no one was seriously injured as a result of these brazen acts,” Detective Senior Sergeant Friend says.

    “It’s clear though that this has caused great inconvenience to the victims.”

    Detective Senior Sergeant Friend says a 50-year-old man was arrested in the Auckland Domain on Sunday evening.

    “The man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday, charged with three counts of arson,” he says.

    “He has been remanded in custody until his next appearance on 25 September.”

    Detective Senior Sergeant Friend says enquiries are ongoing and further charges cannot be ruled out.

    NASA and the U.S. Department of Education are teaming up to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education during after-school hours. The interagency program aims to reach approximately 1,000 students in more than 60 sites across 10 states to join the program, 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
    “Together with the Education Department, NASA aims to create a brighter future for the next generation of explorers,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy. “We are committed to supporting after-school programs across the country with the tools they need to engage students in the excitement of NASA. Through STEM education investments like this, we aspire to ignite curiosity, nurture potential, and inspire our nation’s future researchers and explorers, and innovators.”
    On Monday, NASA and the Education Department kicked off the program at the Wheatley Education Campus in Washington. Students had an opportunity to hear about the interagency collaboration from Kris Brown, deputy associate administrator, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, and Cindy Marten, deputy secretary, Education Department, as well as participate in an engineering design challenge.
    “The 21st Century Community Learning Centers will provide a unique opportunity to inspire students through hands-on learning and real-world problem solving,” said Brown. “By engaging with in learning opportunities with NASA scientists and engineers, students will not only develop the critical thinking and creativity needed to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, but also discover the joy of learning.”

    NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland will provide NASA-related content and academic projects for students, in-person staff training, continuous program support, and opportunities for students to engage with NASA scientists and engineers. Through engineering design challenges, students will use their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to help solve real-world challenges that NASA engineers and scientists may face.
    In May 2023, NASA and the Education Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding, strengthening collaboration between the two agencies, and expanding efforts to increase access to high-quality STEM and space education to students and schools across the nation. NASA Glenn signed a follow-on Space Act Agreement in 2024 to support the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The program, managed by the Education Department and funded by Congress, is the only federal funding source dedicated exclusively to afterschool programs.

    Let me just say first, I wish we did not have to be here tonight. But more than three years after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, President Biden [and] Vice President Harris have yet to hold a single person accountable for this catastrophic failure of epic proportions.

    When asked just this month if there had been any accountability for the disastrous withdrawal, National Security Advisor Kirby responded, ‘We’ve all held ourselves accountable.’

    That answer doesn’t fool anybody.

    If the administration refuses to hold itself accountable, then the duly elected Representatives of the American people must.

    In April 2021, the President announced the Biden-Harris administration would withdraw from Afghanistan.

    They ignored the Taliban’s violations of the Doha agreement.

    They ignored objections by our nation’s military and intelligence experts.

    They ignored objections by our NATO allies.

    The Biden-Harris administration was determined to withdraw from Afghanistan no matter the cost. According to their own admission, the Doha Agreement was, ‘immaterial,’ to that decision.

    Following President Biden’s go-to-zero order, the Taliban captured province after province.

    Meanwhile, thanks to this administration’s feckless policy, there were less than 1,000 U.S. troops on the ground and our Afghan allies suffered unsustainable losses.

    All the while, this administration did nothing to plan an emergency evacuation, while denying the threats to American interests, American citizens, and our decades-long Afghan partners.    

    On August 15, 2021, Kabul fell, and the administration’s utter failure to prepare became painfully clear.

    As my report revealed, the Biden-Harris administration had the information and opportunity to take necessary steps to plan for the inevitable collapse of the Afghan government. But at each step of the way, they prioritized optics – political optics – over the security of brave Americans.

    To protect their partisan aims, the administration proffered our servicemembers, diplomats, citizens, and allies on a silver platter to the Taliban and ISIS-K.

    The Biden-Harris administration treated the Taliban – a terrorist group – as security partners during the evacuation. They created the environment that allowed an ISIS-K terrorist to pass through a Taliban checkpoint.

    Think about that. A Taliban checkpoint. We put the Taliban in charge.

    On August 26, 2021, that terrorist detonated his bomb, murdering 13 U.S. servicemembers and over 170 Afghan civilians and injuring 45 American servicemembers.

    It was the deadliest day for the U.S. military in Afghanistan since 2012, and it never should have happened.

    Rather than own up to their mistakes, this administration touts their deadly evacuation as a success. I believe that is shameful.

    Today, U.S. national security is degraded, America’s credibility on the world stage is damaged, and the moral injury to America’s veterans and servicemembers is a stain on this administration’s credibility and legacy.

    When I became chairman, I launched an investigation so that we, Congress, and the American people could work to ensure that what happened in Afghanistan never happens again.

    And, as everyone here knows, we cannot begin to fix a problem without first admitting there is a problem. That is what accountability is all about. My 353-page report on this investigation works to provide that accountability.

    So, we take the first step in fixing the problem by holding accountable those leaders who were derelict in their duties and responsible for this disaster. They are:

    • Joseph Biden, President of the United States.
    • Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States.
    • Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor.
    • Jonathan Finer, Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor.

    “We, the members of the G7 Group of Ministers, have gathered on the margins of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly to reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s brutal and unjust attacks on Ukraine and its energy infrastructure.

    “We reaffirm our strong commitment to the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. We also reiterate our determination to focus on the essential priorities necessary for the establishment of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and its principles.

    China will always support the Maldives’ effort to protect its sovereignty independence, territorial integrity and national dignity, and support the Maldives’ search for a development path that suits the country’s reality, Wang said.

    Wang mentioned in particular the development of small island countries, saying that China is willing to lend a helping hand through the Chinese proposal known as the Global Development Initiative, meanwhile coping with challenges such as climate change together with small island countries.

    Muizzu, for his part, asked Wang to convey his best regards to President Xi, expressing his warm congratulations on the 75th anniversary of the founding the People’s Republic of China.

    Muizzu said his historic state visit to China in January was not only a total success that injected vigor into the development of Maldives-China relations, but also a personal honor for himself, as he was the first foreign head of state invited to China by President Xi this year.

    The Maldives, Muizzu stressed, firmly adheres to the one-China policy and supports a series of prominent international cooperation initiatives proposed by the Chinese president.

    WASHINGTON— Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Online Dating Safety Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) and David G. Valadao (R-CA) to make online dating safer and crack down on scammers. The legislation would require dating apps and services to issue fraud ban notifications to users who have interacted with a person removed from the app for fraudulent or inappropriate behavior. In 2023 alone, the Federal Trade Commission reported that romance scams resulted in victims losing $1.14 billion. 

    “Online dating services are being used as a platform for bad actors to target and exploit individuals, yet protections continue to lag behind,” said Pettersen. “Notifying users if they have been in contact with a potential scammer is a basic security feature that every online dating service should provide. I’m grateful this legislation has passed the House with bipartisan support, and I will keep working to see it signed into law.”

    As Americans continue to go online to find meaningful relationships, scammers are following suit. The Federal Trade Commission reported that romance scams resulted in victims losing $1.14 billion in 2023 alone. When an online dating service provider becomes aware of a user committing fraudulent activity, such as illegally obtaining money, the online dating service provider often immediately deactivates the fraudulent user’s account. However, individuals who meet online often take their conversations to other communication platforms, so even when a fraudulent account is removed, an individual might not know they are still communicating with someone who has been removed from the dating platform. The Online Dating Safety Act seeks to fill this communication gap by requiring these platforms to send a fraud ban notification to anyone who has communicated with someone with a fraudulent account.

    Starting today, passengers arriving at Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal will be able to book an Uber trip on their smartphone and walk to the new dedicated pick-up zone located 20 metres from the terminal doors.

    The new dedicated kerbside Uber pick-up zone features Uber’s PIN technology, with Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal the first location in New South Wales to offer the new technology, delivering a faster and smoother journey for passengers arriving at Australia’s global gateway.

    The new arrangements will also help ensure a more organised flow of both taxis and rideshare vehicles, while a new holding area for Uber vehicles located closer to the terminal will provide drivers with a dedicated space to wait for passengers.

    Mark Zaouk, Sydney Airport’s Group Executive Commercial, said: “The popularity of rideshare has surged over the past few years¹, and it’s great to give passengers what they’ve been asking for which an Uber zone which is much closer to the terminals, in line with the experience at other major Australian and global airports.

    Additionally, all ground transport operators who have passengers with mobility needs or disabilities will be able to use any one of four accessible pick-up spaces across the international precinct.

    2. Walk to the Uber pick-up zone in front of the International terminal, and either go to the first available car, or at busier times, join the queue.
    3. Share your unique PIN with the driver-partner and verify vehicle and driver-partner details before you get into the vehicle.

    Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to a criminal damage incident involving multiple vehicles that occurred over the weekend.

    The damage is believed to have occurred between the afternoon of Friday 20 September 2024, and the morning of Monday 23 September 2024, at a business on Bath Street in Alice Springs.

    Up to 22 vehicles were damaged, having their windows broken during the incident.

    Investigations are in their early stages and detectives from Strike Force Viper have taken multiple victim statements.

    KARL STEFANOVIC, HOST: Welcome back. The consumer watchdog is taking legal action against Coles and Woolies, accusing the supermarket giants of misleading customers with dodgy discounts. Joining us to discuss today’s headlines is Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth and Independent MP Monique Ryan. Morning, ladies. Nice to see you. Monique, what a spectacular and disturbing own goal from the supermarkets. Maybe we do need to break them up with divestiture.

    MONIQUE RYAN, MEMBER FOR KOOYONG: No, I don’t agree, Karl. Look, it is a really disturbing news that we’ve seen that the supermarkets have been effectively price gouging Australians for a long time and that’s probably contributed significantly to inflation and to some of even the increased interest rates that we’ve seen in recent years. But we need more competition, not less. Divestiture would actually decrease competition and allow supermarkets to increase prices even more. We do need the ACCC and similar organisations to keep an eye on industry. This is appalling behaviour by the supermarkets.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: Okay, Amanda, it wasn’t your Government or the parliamentary committee – it was consumers who called all this out.

    AMANDA RISHWORTH, MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SERVICES: Look, the ACCC does a very important job in this country and I’m really obviously going to be following this case. But it is disappointing if this turns out to be true for customers and very concerning. But we need to continue to reform, make sure we have competition in this country. That’s exactly what the mandatory code of conduct for the food and grocery sector is all about. We also need to make sure that our merger laws are fit for purpose and that we do have the ACCC looking very closely at our supermarkets because consumers and suppliers deserve a fair go. So, look, this is important work and we’ll keep doing it.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: We’ve known for so long, though, that we suspected at least, that it’s been happening. What’s taken you so long to act?

    AMANDA RISHWORTH: I think the ACCC has been getting on and doing its job and this latest action is one of a number of actions that the ACCC has taken. But when it comes to making the grocery code of conduct mandatory, that’s been something, we’re out for consultation on now with a draft we’ve been going through methodically with the Craig Emerson report to introduce all those 11 recommendations. It’s important work and we’ll keep doing it.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: Monique, that was a fair accusation at the start of this interview that this has contributed to inflation, maybe even interest rates. Do you stand by that?

    MONIQUE RYAN: I do. And I really think that at a time of a cost of living crisis, when Australians are really struggling with the price of so many essentials, the behaviour of Coles and Woolworths has been unconscionable. We do need the ACCC, we need the Government to work on competition in lots of industries. I’ve been calling for a code of conduct for the aviation industry for some time as well. We need the Government to act on that in the same way that it’s acted on supermarkets recently.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: Well, have a look at the prices for flying to the grand final this weekend, it’s unbelievable. Let’s roll on, though. Nuclear. Monique long after the price is forgotten, Peter Dutton would argue the power remains. What did you make of his announcement yesterday?

    MONIQUE RYAN: Peter Dutton has been talking about nuclear, but he still won’t give us the detail we need, which is the details regarding costing. The Government, any governments since the 1970s, if we look back to the Gorton government of the early seventies, have looked at nuclear. There have been so many inquiries into the potential for nuclear energy in our electricity market for more than 50 years, and every single one has found that nuclear just doesn’t compare to the other sources of electricity. People need cheaper power. We need to be able to be confident that we have a secure electricity supply in this country. Nuclear power is not the answer. If Peter Dutton really believed in this, he would have evidence of the cost effectiveness of the nuclear option. He doesn’t, and that’s why he hasn’t presented any costings to the Australian public.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: But you’d go for it if he found the Willy Wonka chocolate bar answer to it all?

    MONIQUE RYAN: I think all Australians want cheaper electricity. We’re struggling with the cost of power. We get our energy bills and they’re horrible. But nuclear is not the answer. There’s no evidence. There never has been in the multiple inquiries over 50 years to ever suggest that nuclear electricity is a cost effective option for this country.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: Amanda, he reckons Bob Hawke could go for it. Surely that’s enough for you.

    AMANDA RISHWORTH: Well, I have to say that was the art of distraction from Peter Dutton. I mean, he is, you know, verbaling, effectively a former, revered Labor leader. Someone that can’t give a right of reply because he passed away tragically five years ago. I mean, he could have actually turned up and told us what the cost was, told us how long it was going to take to build, rebut every expert that is saying that nuclear is more expensive, more risky and won’t keep the lights on, but instead he chose the art of distraction. He could have channelled Malcolm Turnbull, who is very, very vocal on this issue. Who says it’s an absolute disaster. So, maybe he needs to look at his own leaders first.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: Righto. Finally, footy and fashion were on show at the Brownlow last night with Carlton captain Patty Cripps taking home the AFL’s highest honour. Monique, I feel like this was a great moment for you personally. Talk to us about how that made you feel.

    MONIQUE RYAN: So, you can see probably, yeah, you can probably see Karl I’m carrying a picture here, a signed picture. Patty Cripps wishing me all the best for all the good work that I do in Canberra as a Carlton supporter. It was a lovely night. It was lovely to see Patty take home the Charles Brownlow medal. He is an absolute champion. And after a pretty tough year, it was a good thing for Baggers supporters to see.

    KARL STEFANOVIC: I’m getting a little bit emotional. You, Amanda?

    AMANDA RISHWORTH: Oh, look, he was an absolute star on the field. You couldn’t deny that. Broke the record in terms of the number of points and probably an honourable mention to Nick Daicos, who also broke a record. So, look, it was a special night and congratulations to everyone.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hagerty, Colleagues Introduce Legislation to Protect American Assets From Unlawful Seizure by AMLO’s Mexico

    In violation of USMCA, the Mexican President has repeatedly threatened to declare an American company’s property as a “Protected Natural Area” to unjustifiably seize their assets

    WASHINGTON—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today led his colleagues in introducing the Defending American Property Abroad Act, legislation to impose retaliatory prohibitions that deter and punish any Western Hemisphere nation that unlawfully seizes American assets. This legislation responds to ongoing efforts by the Government of Mexico to seize a deep-water port owned by U.S.-based Vulcan Materials Company, which is a flagrant violation of the United Sates-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) governing trade between our two nations.

    Specifically, this legislation would prohibit vessels from entering a U.S. port if they had previously used a port, land, or infrastructure that had been illegally seized from a U.S. entity by a foreign nation in the Western Hemisphere. It also requires the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to identify and ban illegally seized ports from U.S. trade and requires the United States Trade Representative to report to Congress on how such expropriations would be addressed during the upcoming review of the United Sates-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), scheduled for 2026. The legislation is co-sponsored by Senators John Barrasso (R-WY), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL).

    “I strongly condemn AMLO’s threats against Vulcan Materials Company and am pleased to see this bipartisan rebuke from the United States Senate,” said Senator Hagerty. “No nation or president, and especially one of our largest trade partners, should be allowed to bully an American firm without consequences. Our legislation will help to undermine any attempt by AMLO to profit from his illegal actions and, in the event of a seizure, would strengthen our nation’s position in trade negotiations with Mexico.”

    “Mexico seizing American-owned property is outrageous and unacceptable,” said Senator Barrasso. “The United States will always defend American business assets from illegal seizures. Senator Hagerty’s bill will ensure foreign countries cannot profit off of stealing from American companies abroad.”

    “Make no mistake–President López Obrador’s scheme to seize Vulcan’s deep-water port would represent a flagrant expropriation of a lawfully permitted, U.S.-owned operation, and his administration’s assault on the rule of law is putting America’s and Alabama’s economic and national security interests in jeopardy,” said Senator Britt. “We have repeatedly warned him that there will be substantial ramifications if his administration crossed this line. Our bipartisan Defending American Property Abroad Act makes it clear that we will keep our promises.     “In recent years, Mexican President López Obrador has unfairly targeted Vulcan Materials Company, a U.S.-based company that employs over 1,000 people in Virginia,” said Senator Kaine, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. “That’s why I’m introducing this bipartisan legislation with my colleagues to deter Mexico and any country in our hemisphere from illegally seizing U.S. assets. On the heels of Mexico’s controversial judicial reforms, this behavior only further harms the economic relationship between our two countries, as well as global investor confidence in Mexico.” 

    “For more than a year, Mexican President López Obrador has continued to show undue aggression toward American businesses, primarily Alabama’s Vulcan Materials,” said Senator Tuberville. “The continued escalation against Vulcan’s operation in Mexico is a disgrace to the longstanding trade agreement between our two countries for the last 30 years. The Biden-Harris administration has refused to stand up to President López Obrador’s threats, which is why it’s time for Congress to take action and urgently move this legislation to ensure this doesn’t happen to more American companies under a new Mexican president.”

    Background:

    In May 2022, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) abruptly shut down Vulcan’s operations with false claims that the firm was violating its contract, and since then the Mexican Government, under AMLO’s direction, has waged an unceasing pressure campaign against Vulcan, including multiple lawsuits and at times sending military and law enforcement to its facilities. Last month, AMLO announced that he is pushing to designate the port and mine a “Protected Natural Area”.

    In May 2022, Hagerty urged President Joe Biden to take action against the Mexican government’s moves to expropriate the property of U.S. companies with investments and operations in Mexico.

    In March 2023, Hagerty pressed Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the seizure by Mexican military troops and civilian authorities of U.S.-based Vulcan Materials Company’s assets in Mexico.

    In December 2023, Hagerty and Kaine spoke on the Senate floor imploring President López Obrador to halt harmful actions against American companies’ lawfully owned assets in Mexico, noting that these unlawful actions violate agreements made between the two countries under the USMCA and jeopardize a key U.S. trade relationship.
