  • Devotion has no limits: PM Modi recalls exposition of Lord Buddha relics in Vietnam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed deep appreciation for the heartfelt messages he received from Vietnam, thanking India for enabling the ‘darshan’ of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha.

He called the experience a “heartwarming feeling”, underlining the spiritual connection shared by the people of India and Vietnam through the teachings of the Buddha.

Speaking during the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said, “During the last few days, many people from Vietnam sent me their messages through various mediums. There was reverence and affability in every line of these messages. Their feelings were heartwarming. They were expressing their gratitude to India for enabling the darshan of the holy relics of Bhagwan Buddha. The emotions in their words were more than any formal thanks.”

The sacred relics, originally discovered at Nagarjunakonda in the Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh – a site with a deep-rooted connection to Buddhism – were taken to Vietnam on May 2 by an Indian delegation led by Union Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

The delegation also included Andhra Pradesh Minister Kandula Durgesh, senior monks, and officials. Initially scheduled to remain in Vietnam until May 21, the enshrinement was extended by 12 more days following a formal request from the Vietnamese government and a recommendation from the Committee for Ethnic and Religious Affairs.

“Last month, these holy relics of Bhagwan Buddha were taken from India to Vietnam. They were kept for public darshan at nine different places there. In a way, this initiative of India became a national festival for Vietnam. You can imagine that in Vietnam, which has a population of about 10 crore people, more than 1.5 crore people had a darshan of the holy relics of Bhagwan Buddha,” PM Modi said.

The relics were displayed at major sites including Thanh Tam Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh, Quan Su Pagoda in Hanoi, Tam Chuc Pagoda in Ha Nam, Bai Dinh Pagoda in Ninh Binh, Phuc Son Pagoda in Bac Giang, Truc Lam Yen Tu Monastery in Quang Ninh, Chuong Pagoda in Hung Yen, and Quan Am Ngu Hanh Son Pagoda in Da Nang.

At each location, crowds gathered in massive numbers to pay their respects.

“The pictures and videos that I saw on social media made me realise that devotion has no limits. Be it rain or the scorching sun, people stood in queues for hours. Children, the elderly, differently-abled people, everyone was overwhelmed,” the Prime Minister said.

“The President of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister, senior ministers, everyone paid obeisance. The feeling of respect among the people there for this pilgrimage was so deep that the Vietnamese government requested to extend it for another 12 days, and India gladly accepted it,” he added.

He also spoke about the power of Buddha’s teachings in uniting people across borders and cultures.

“The thoughts of Bhagwan Buddha have the power to bind countries, cultures and people together,” he said, noting that India had previously shared the relics with Thailand and Mongolia, where they were received with similar reverence.

Encouraging citizens to connect with their spiritual and cultural roots, he urged, “I urge all of you to definitely visit Buddhist sites in your state. It will be a spiritual experience, as well as a wonderful opportunity to connect with our cultural heritage.”

  • Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi hails ‘women-led development’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the transformative role of women across India who are leading change through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), preserving heritage and shaping a new future for the nation.

Speaking during the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi underlined how initiatives led by women are giving new strength to the ‘Women-Led Development’ movement.

“Just as our India is known for its regional, linguistic and cultural diversity, the diversity of arts, crafts and skills is also a great quality of our country,” PM Modi said. “Whichever area you visit, you will get to know about some local specialities. We often talk about such unique products of the country in Mann Ki Baat.”

Referring to one such product, the Prime Minister highlighted Meghalaya’s traditional Eri Silk, which recently received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

“Eri Silk is like a heritage for Meghalaya. The Khasi community, in particular, has preserved it for generations and enriched it with their skills. Its most special feature is the way it is made. The silkworms are not killed to obtain it, hence it is also called Ahimsa Silk,” he said.

Pointing to its growing global appeal, he said, “Nowadays, the demand for such products is rising rapidly across the world – products that are non-violent and environment-friendly. Eri Silk from Meghalaya is a perfect product for the global market. It keeps you warm in winters and cool in summers, making it suitable for diverse climates.”

He further noted, “Women of Meghalaya are taking this heritage forward through Self Help Groups. I congratulate the people of Meghalaya and urge everyone to try out Eri Silk clothing. Also, remember – Khadi, handloom, handicrafts, Vocal for Local. If customers buy only Indian-made products and traders sell only Indian-made products, it will infuse new energy into the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.”

PM Modi also shared stories from Telangana and Karnataka that reflect the impact of women-led economic initiatives.

“You will feel proud knowing the success story of the women of Bhadrachalam in Telangana. These women, once working as labourers, are now making biscuits from millets – Shree Anna. Their biscuits, named ‘Bhadradri Millet Magic’, are reaching markets from Hyderabad to London,” he said.

“These women joined an SHG and received training. They also started producing Giri Sanitary Pads. In just three months, they prepared 40,000 pads and supplied them to schools and offices at low cost,” he said.

The Prime Minister also praised the women of Kalaburgi in Karnataka for branding traditional jowar rotis.

“The aroma of these rotis is no longer limited to their village. A special counter has been opened in Bengaluru, and online orders are coming in. Kalaburgi roti is now reaching the kitchens of big cities. This is not just a culinary story – it is a story of increasing incomes and empowered lives,” he added.

PM Modi also emphasised that women across the country are not only scripting their own success stories but also reshaping the nation’s development landscape.

“The mantra of Women-Led Development is giving India a new direction, a new future. Our mothers, sisters and daughters are today changing not only their own lives but also that of the society at large,” he said.

PM Modi also mentioned Suma Uike from Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh – a woman who has risen to self-reliance through mushroom farming, animal husbandry, and community entrepreneurship.

The Prime Minister lauded her journey from joining a self-help group in Katangi block to eventually running a Didi Canteen and a Thermal Therapy Centre.

“This is the glow of self-confidence, of self-reliance. One such face is Suma Uike from Madhya Pradesh. Sumaji’s efforts are very commendable. She took training in mushroom farming and animal husbandry by joining the Self Help Group in Katangi block of Balaghat district. Thus, she found her the path to self-reliance,” PM Modi said.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission holds technical meeting for the establishment of economic and social council in west Africa

    Download logo

The ECOWAS Commission, through the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), is holding a technical session to advance the course of the establishment of an Economic and Social Council of West Africa (ECOWAS-ECOSOC), beginning from the 26th of June 2025 in Niger state, Nigeria.

The two-day meeting brings together officials from the relevant ECOWAS Departments, Directorates and Divisions, including consultants and partners charged with building on the earlier phases of consultations within the context of the wider efforts aimed at consolidating democracy, peace and security while strengthening political stability, security, participatory governance and citizen’s inclusion in the region.

In his opening remarks, the ECOWAS Commission’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Amb Abdel-Fatau Musah charged participants to be mindful of the goal of an ECOWAS-ECOSOC which is to constitute that bridge of a powerful voice to interface with decision makers and at the same time being a reverse influential organ of citizenry engagement.

He noted that the idea of an ECOSOC for ECOWAS is to mutually reinforce everyone through an institutionalized people’s organ with a facilitating platform that is a voice of the regional community’s farmers, young people’s organisations, non-governmental organizations, women, youth and professional groups, etc.

The Commissioner added that through ECOWAS-ECOSOC as an authentic voice of the people, “we are our own architects, the People’s social wellbeing in order to truly attain a people-centered development. The benefits will be for all as the proposed organ should be insulated from the control of national governments being an authentic voice of the people” He added.

Following the welcome address by the Ag Head, Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs Mr. Constant Gnacadja, the facilitator and former Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission H.E Toga Gayewea McIntosh gave an overview of the previous consultative meetings.

There were also goodwill messages from the representatives of ECOWAS Commission’s partners- the African Union, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) as well as the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

At the meeting, participants will examine, among others, the justification of ECOSOC, membership and eligibility criteria, structure and sustainability.

A firmly established ECOWAS-ECOSOC is seen as movement that can play a crucial role in identifying emerging social and economic trends and issues by strengthening the use of dialogue, advocacy, as well as policy recommendations in the resolution of common challenges of poverty, inequality, political instability, environmental difficulties and conflict.

The technical meeting builds on the foundations laid by the earlier held Internal consultative Meeting of ECOWAS Staff, which took place on the 12th to 13th of December 2023 in Lagos, the regional consultative meeting of civil society organisations that happened on the 22nd and 23rd of February 2024 in Abuja and the experts’ group meeting which held on the 12th and 13th of June 2024, in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the growing environmental consciousness across the country, highlighting individual and community-led efforts to protect nature and promote sustainability.

Speaking in the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme, ‘Mann ki Baat’, PM Modi said that several inspiring initiatives were shared with him on the occasion of World Environment Day, reflecting a rising spirit of environmental responsibility among citizens.

“This month, we all celebrated World Environment Day. I received thousands of your messages. Many people told me about those friends who had set out alone to save the environment, and then the whole society joined them. This contribution of everyone is becoming a great strength for our earth,” PM Modi said.

He shared the inspiring story of Ramesh Kharmale from Pune.

“When people take rest at the end of the week, Ramesh Kharmale and his family set out with a pickaxe and a spade. Do you know where to? Towards the hills of Junnar. Be it sunshine or a steep climb, their ascent does not stop. They clear bushes, dig trenches to retain water and sow seeds. They dug 70 trenches in just two months,” he said.

“Ramesh Kharmale has made many small ponds and planted hundreds of trees. He is also getting an Oxygen Park built. The result is that birds have started returning here, and wildlife is getting a new breath,” he added.

The Prime Minister also lauded a large-scale campaign in Gujarat.

“Another beautiful initiative for the environment has been seen in Ahmedabad city. Here, the Municipal Corporation has started the ‘Mission for Million Trees’ campaign. The target is to plant lakhs of trees. A special aspect of this campaign is ‘Sindoor Van’. This forest is dedicated to the bravehearts of Operation Sindoor. Sindoor saplings are being planted in the memory of those brave people who have sacrificed everything for the country,” he said.

He highlighted the growing success of the national campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, which aims to link personal emotion with environmental responsibility.

“Another campaign is being given a new impetus – ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’. Under this campaign, crores of trees have been planted in the country. You, too, must take part in such campaigns going on in your village or city. Plant trees, save water, serve the earth, because when we save nature, we actually protect our future generations,” PM Modi urged people.

He further cited the example of Patoda village in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district in Maharashtra, which has embraced an eco-friendly lifestyle.

“This is a carbon-neutral village Panchayat. In this village, no one throws garbage outside their house. There is a complete system for collecting garbage from every house. Here, dirty water is also treated. No water goes into the river without being cleaned,” he said.

“Last rites are performed with cow dung cakes, and a tree is planted in the name of the deceased with that ash. The cleanliness in this village is also worth seeing. When small habits become a collective resolve, a big change is certain,” he added.

The Prime Minister underlined the urgent need for environmental stewardship at both individual and community levels, stressing that such efforts are critical not only for the present but for generations to come.

  • Not just a tournament, it’s a celebration of unity & hope: PM Modi hails staging of Bodoland CEM Cup

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the power of sports in Assam’s Bodoland, highlighting the Bodoland CEM Cup as a symbol of unity and hope in the Bodo Territorial Area.

The Bodoland Chief Executive Member’s (CEM) Cup Football Tournament is a visionary initiative by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), leveraging sports as a means of social transformation. The tournament embodies BTC’s commitment to fostering unity, peace, and football talent across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

In the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi said “Imagine a picture. The morning sun is touching the hills, the light is slowly moving towards the plains, and with that light, a troupe of football lovers is advancing. The whistle blows and in a few moments, the ground reverberates with applause and slogans. People’s enthusiasm is increasing with every pass, every goal. You must be wondering… what a beautiful world is that? This picture is the reality of Bodoland, a major region of Assam. Bodoland today stands out in the country with a new face, a new identity. The energy and confidence that the youth here have, is most visible on the football field. In the Bodo Territorial Area, the Bodoland CEM Cup is being organised. This is not just a tournament; it has become a celebration of unity and hope.”

The tournament is organised at multiple administrative levels – including Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs), BTCLA Constituencies, Districts, and the Council Level – ensuring widespread participation and accessibility. It complements initiatives like football academies and the participation of Bodoland FC in national events like the Durand Cup.

“More than three thousand seven hundred teams, about seventy thousand players, and even among them, a large number of our daughter’s participation! These statistics tell the story of a big change in Bodoland. Bodoland is now increasingly casting its glow on the sports map of the country,” PM Modi said.

In a region that has seen past unrest, the CEM Cup uses football to unify diverse communities. It fosters a shared identity, bringing people together through the universal language of sports.

“There was a time when struggle itself was the identity of this place. Then the avenues for the youth here were limited. But today, there are new dreams in their eyes and the courage of self-reliance in their hearts. The football players hailing from here are now making their mark at a high level. Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, Manbir Basumatari – these are not just the names of football players – they are the identity of that new generation who catapulted Bodoland from the field to the national stage,” PM Modi added.

As sports promote both physical and mental health. The CEM Cup encourages discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among youth, contributing to holistic community development.

“Many of them practiced with limited resources; many forged their way through difficult circumstances, and today many young children of the country kickstart their dreams, inspired by their names. If we have to expand our capability, first of all we have to focus on our fitness and wellbeing,” he concluded.

  • Not just a tournament, it’s a celebration of unity & hope: PM Modi hails staging of Bodoland CEM Cup

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s resort airports gear up for busy summer travel season

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

HAIKOU, June 29 — More than 8.3 million passenger trips are expected to pass through two major airports in China’s southern island province of Hainan as the summer travel season begins on Tuesday, airport authorities said.

Haikou Meilan International Airport is forecast to handle nearly 4.6 million passenger trips over the next two months, with around 30,400 flights scheduled.

The airport has expanded its international network with new routes to Tokyo, London and Jakarta to meet growing travel demand. It expects to operate 2,196 international flights carrying about 254,000 passenger trips this summer, a 13.3 percent increase from a year earlier.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport, located in the resort city of Sanya, is projected to handle approximately 3.73 million passenger trips and 22,900 flights during the same period.

To accommodate the summer surge, the airport has increased capacity on domestic routes to major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, by deploying wide-body aircraft.

Hainan, known for its year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, is seeking to revitalize its tourism industry. China aims to transform the island into a globally influential tourism and consumption destination by 2035.

In 2024, Hainan recorded over 97.2 million tourist visits, both domestic and international, marking an 8 percent year-on-year increase. Total tourism expenditure grew by 12.5 percent, reaching 204 billion yuan (about 28.48 billion U.S. dollars), according to official data.

This year, the province aims to welcome over 100 million tourist visits, both domestic and international.

As part of its broader economic strategy, China is transforming Hainan into a Free Trade Port (FTP). As the Hainan FTP is set to begin independent customs operations by the end of the year, it is poised to become not only a tourist haven but also a pivotal gateway for China’s opening-up drive.

Staff members transfer newly arrived giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, June 28, 2025. Four Japan-born giant pandas arrived here on Saturday evening. The four pandas — 24-year-old Rauhin and her three daughters, 8-year-old Yuihin, 6-year-old Saihin and 4-year-old Fuhin — were sent to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for quarantine. In 1994, China began cooperation on giant panda conservation with Adventure World amusement park, located in the coastal town of Shirahama in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture. The two countries have bred 17 cubs together and established the largest overseas artificial breeding population of giant pandas, known as the “Hin Family.” Over the years, China and Japan have developed a solid partnership and achieved remarkable progress in panda conservation and breeding, cub care and disease treatment, scientific exchange and public education. • MIL-OSI Africa: Majodina commends completion of Welbedacht Pipeline Phase 1 project

    Source: South Africa News Agency

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, has commended the completion of Welbedacht Pipeline Phase 1 project, which will augment water supply and enhance reliable water provision in Mangaung and surrounding areas.

Majodina handed over the project to Vaal Central Water in Bloemfontein on Friday, 27 June 2025.

The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and Human Settlements Saki Mokoena, and the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metro Municipality Gregory Nthatisi.

The pipeline project was funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation, through Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant to the tune of R595 744 836.70.  The project entailed the replacement of aging infrastructure of concrete water pipes to steel pipes between Welbedacht and Bloemfontein.

The aging infrastructure caused disruptions in water supply to Mangaung Metro due to frequent bursts and leaks.

The project, which was undertaken by the Department of Water and Sanitation in conjunction with Vaal Central Water, and Mangaung Metro, included the reconstruction of a 33.7 km pipeline with a 1000 mm diameter bypass that stretches between Brandkop Reservoir and the R702, approximately 20 kilometers from Dewetsdorp.

The pipeline site commenced in 2017 but experienced delays due to various challenges, such as community disruptions, landowners refusing to grant access and vandalism of equipment. Following the final completion of the project, the pipeline was fully tested in February 2024. It is expected to supply potable water to approximately 81 236 households.

Majodina called on Mangaung Metropolitan to constantly ensure maintenance and operation of the infrastructure to guarantee future water security.

She also announced the implementation of the second phase of the project, which will focus on the construction of a 105 km, 1200mm diameter bypass pipeline from Lieuwkop Chamber to the Welbedacht Water Treatment Works (WTW).

“This is a very huge project that will bring change in the lives of the people of Mangaung as far as water supply is concerned. The municipality should, therefore, ensure that operations and maintenance of the project is done to ensure water security.

“Reticulation of water to communities should also be prioritised. We are looking forward to complete the entire project, including the Gariep Dam project which entails pipeline construction from Gariep Dam to Bloemfontein,” the Minister said.

Nthatisi commended the department’s ongoing support to enhance water supply services in the municipality. The mayor also called on the communities to use water sparingly and take care of water and sanitation infrastructures.

“We would like to convey our sincerest gratitude to the Minister and the Department of Water and Sanitation for the gift of this magnitude that will serve the people of Mangaung. This project will literally ease some of the burden we are carrying as the municipality.

“I would also like to reiterate the clarion call you have made to our community to take care of this infrastructure and protect it against vandalism. We, as the municipality, wish to state that we are giving the challenges of water supply the necessary attention,” Nthatisi said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Chikunga calls for stronger partnerships to tackle GBVF

    Source: South Africa News Agency

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has called for a “more deliberate partnership” between government and the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Response Fund.

Delivering remarks during a recent meet and greet with the leadership of the GBVF Fund, held in Sandton, Gauteng, the Minister stressed the need for shared responsibility and a unified commitment to justice in the national fight against GBVF.

“Let today mark the beginning of a more deliberate partnership, one rooted in shared responsibility, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to justice,” Chikunga said.

Commending the Fund for its efforts in mobilising and distributing resources to frontline GBVF initiatives, the Minister underscored the need for deeper alignment between state-led and civil society efforts.

The fund has so far reached 772 244 people across the country.

“We commend the GBVF Response Fund for the strides it has made in mobilising and disbursing resources to frontline initiatives. This is vital work, and we acknowledge the dedication and effort it entails.

“At the same time, we believe this is a critical moment to strengthen alignment. As government, we are committed to ensuring that our respective efforts reinforce one another, that we close systemic gaps, scale local innovation, and ensure that survivors across all communities are supported with care and dignity,” she said.

The engagement brought together Fund executives, including Interim CEO Zanele Ngwepe and Chairperson of the Board Faith Khanyile, alongside officials from the Ministry and Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.

Chikunga warned that gender-based violence and femicide remain a national and global human rights crisis, citing alarming statistics.

“The situation in South Africa is dire. In just three months — January to March 2025 — the South African Police Service recorded 969 women murdered, over 11,000 rape cases, and close to 15,000 assault cases against women. Each of these numbers is a tragedy [and] a call to action,” the Minister emphasised.

She stressed that violence continues to occur where women should feel safest, in homes, workplaces, and places of worship and highlighted the added vulnerability of women with disabilities who often face sexual violence with little access to justice.

“This means there are women who cannot see, hear, or speak — who are subjected to brutality and have little to no access to justice. These are the hidden faces of gender-based violence and femicide,” she said.

Chikunga reiterated South Africa’s commitment to the National Strategic Plan on GBVF, describing it as “a country plan driven by survivors, community leaders, civil society, and the public.” The Ministry is also leading South Africa’s chairmanship of the G20 Empowerment Working Group this year, placing GBVF firmly on the international agenda.

Highlighting institutional progress, she announced that the Inter-Ministerial Committee on GBVF and Substance Abuse, co-chaired with Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, has been approved by Cabinet and is already operational.

She also confirmed that the long-awaited National Council on GBVF will be formally established by April 2026.

“This Council will serve as the institutional anchor for coordination, accountability, and funding — ensuring that the implementation of the National Strategic Plan is survivor-centred, agile, and sustained beyond political cycles,” she said.

Other key interventions include the launch of the National GBVF Dashboard to track progress in real time, the expansion of Thuthuzela Care Centres, and the implementation of 100-Day Challenge models in communities — an initiative bringing together local police, prosecutors, health workers, and social services to tackle specific GBV issues with speed and collaboration.

The Minister invited the Fund to contribute to ongoing policy efforts, including the finalisation of the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality (WEGE) Bill, which seeks to strengthen mechanisms for eliminating gender discrimination across all sectors.

While acknowledging the resource constraints faced by her department, Minister Chikunga affirmed her team’s commitment.

“This work is not easy. But it is a non-negotiable because there can be no freedom, no peace, and no economic justice where women, girls, persons with disabilities and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals live in fear,” she said.

The Minister concluded by expressing hope that the meeting would lay the groundwork for enhanced cooperation with the Fund, in pursuit of a South Africa free from gender-based violence and femicide. – SAnews.gov.za

Note: A severe weather area depicted in the Day 4-8 period indicates 15%, 30% or higher probability for severe thunderstorms within 25 miles of any point.

PREDICTABILITY TOO LOW is used to indicate severe storms may be possible based on some model scenarios. However, the location or occurrence of severe storms are in doubt due to: 1) large differences in the deterministic model solutions, 2) large spread in the ensemble guidance, and/or 3) minimal run-to-run continuity.

POTENTIAL TOO LOW means the threat for a regional area of organized severe storms appears unlikely (i.e., less than 15%) for the forecast day.

    …DISCUSSION…
The cold front which may result in severe weather on Day 3/Tuesday
will move into the Atlantic and near the Gulf Coast across Florida.
A reinforcing mid-level trough will maintain northerly flow across
the eastern CONUS as an area of high pressure builds into the
region. A drier, more continental airmass across the eastern CONUS
will keep severe weather chances minimal.

Upper 60s to low 70s dewpoints will remain across the Plains,
beneath a strong upper-level ridge. By the time the ridge starts to
break down on Day 6/Friday some severe weather is possible as a
mid-level trough moves into the northern Plains. However, the ECMWF
shows less than 20 knots of flow across the Plains. Therefore, shear
will likely be limited. Thunderstorms will be likely along the cold
front as it traverses the central and eastern CONUS next weekend.
However, the lack of stronger mid-level flow casts doubt on storm
organization. Therefore, no severe weather probabilities have been
    added at this time.

…THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE
    CAROLINAS INTO THE NORTHEAST…

    …SUMMARY…
Isolated to scattered strong to severe storms are possible from the
Carolinas to the Northeast on Tuesday afternoon/evening.

    …Synopsis…
A mid-level trough will shift east from the Great Lakes to the
Northeast on Tuesday. Moderate mid-level flow will overspread much
of the Great Lakes and Northeast. At the surface, a cold front will
move east across the Northeast and arc back into the southern
Plains. This front will be the primary focus for severe thunderstorm
    potential on Tuesday.

    …Carolinas to the Northeast…
Low to mid 70s dewpoints should be in place ahead of the cold front
east of the Appalachians on Tuesday. Diurnal destabilization should
result in weak to moderate instability from the Carolinas into the
Northeast by early afternoon. The greatest instability is expected
across North Carolina and Virginia. Storm coverage will likely be
higher in this area, but with limited deep-layer shear, storms will
    likely be less organized.

Farther north, stronger shear will be present from Pennsylvania
northward. This may result in greater storms organization including
the potential for a few supercells with a threat for large hail and
damaging wind gusts. Mid-level lapse rates will be weak (

…THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE MIDWEST
    TO THE MID-ATLANTIC…

    …SUMMARY…
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across parts
of the Ohio Valley, Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic on Monday.

    …Synopsis…
A mid-level trough will amplify as it moves into the Great Lakes on
Monday with a persistent ridge across the western CONUS and a closed
low off the California coast. At the surface, a cold front will move
through the Midwest and Great Lakes.

    …Midwest into the Great Lakes…
Moderate instability is forecast to develop ahead of a cold front
across the western Great Lakes/Midwest Monday afternoon as
temperatures warm into the low 80s with dewpoints in the 70s.
Mid-level lapse rates will not be that steep, but instability and
forcing should be sufficient to support some strong updrafts. 30 to
40 knots of mid-level flow across the warm sector will lead to
modest shear which could result in multicell clusters capable of
damaging wind gusts. 00Z CAM guidance suggest the potential for
storms ahead of and along the front with some post-frontal storms
also possible across Wisconsin beneath the colder air aloft. This
cooler air aloft may result in isolated large hail from the
    post-frontal storms.

    …Mid Atlantic…
Despite weak deep-layer flow/shear, a few wet microbursts will be
possible east of the Appalachians during the afternoon, where steep
low-level lapse rates will develop amid deep/rich tropospheric
    moisture (PW around 2 inches).

    …SUMMARY…
Isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible

primary risk, though hail is expected across portions of the High

late-afternoon position expected from northern WI-central
IA-northwest KS-arcing into southeast WY. This boundary will likely
serve as the focus for robust convection during the
afternoon/evening hours. Diurnal heating will prove instrumental in
convective development and the strongest boundary-layer heating will
be noted across the High Plains into extreme southeast NE.
Convective temperatures will be easily breached along the boundary
over northern KS as temperatures soar through the upper 90s to near
100F. Forecast soundings exhibit cloud bases near 3km in this
environment and fairly high PWs favor damaging winds despite the
relative weak shear across this region.

Farther northeast, remnants of early-day convection will spread
across southern MN/northwest IA. This activity will propagate
southeast and likely influence redevelopment where differential
heating is greatest. Some short-range guidance suggests an MCS may
propagate south along the NE/IA border, with some upscale growth
possible by early evening. While not all models agree, this signal
is likely real, especially as a weak LLJ is forecast across eastern
KS into northwest MO into the evening.

Another corridor where strong/severe convection is expected is
across the High Plains from eastern WY into northeast CO. Northwest
flow is forecast to strengthen across the northern High Plains along
the back side of the trough. Isolated supercells are expected to
develop along the synoptic front that will be draped across this
region. Forecast soundings do not exhibit strong buoyancy, but
modest shear and moist profiles favor organized updrafts that should
spread southeast toward the NE Panhandle. Large hail and wind are
    expected.

    …Middle Atlantic…

Seasonally high PW values and light west-southwesterly mid-level
flow will once again favor a few slow-moving line segments and
clusters. Storms will be diurnally driven, and convection should
focus along a very weak zone of low-level confluence that should
extend across the Delmarva into central VA. Locally strong gusts are
    the primary concern.

  • Israel orders evacuations in northern Gaza as Trump calls for war to end

The Israeli military ordered Palestinians to evacuate areas in northern Gaza on Sunday before intensified fighting against Hamas, as U.S. President Donald Trump called for an end to the war amid renewed efforts to broker a ceasefire.

“Make the deal in Gaza, get the hostages back,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform early on Sunday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was due to hold talks later in the day on the progress of Israel’s offensive. A senior security official said the military will tell him the campaign is close to reaching its objectives, and warn that expanding fighting to new areas in Gaza may endanger the remaining Israeli hostages.

But in a statement posted on X and text messages sent to many residents, the military urged people in northern parts of the enclave to head south towards the Al-Mawasi area in Khan Younis, which Israel designated as a humanitarian area. Palestinian and U.N. officials say nowhere in Gaza is safe.

“The (Israeli) Defense Forces is operating with extreme force in these areas, and these military operations will escalate, intensify, and extend westward to the city center to destroy the capabilities of terrorist organizations,” the military said.

The evacuation order covered the Jabalia area and most Gaza City districts. Medics and residents said the Israeli army’s bombardments escalated in the early hours in Jabalia, destroying several houses and killing at least six people.

In Khan Younis in the south, five people were killed in an airstrike on a tent encampment near Mawasi, medics said.

    NEW CEASEFIRE PUSH

The escalation comes as Arab mediators, Egypt and Qatar, backed by the United States, begin a new ceasefire effort to halt the 20-month-old conflict and secure the release of Israeli and foreign hostages still being held by Hamas.

Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has heightened in the wake of U.S. and Israeli bombings of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

A Hamas official told Reuters the group had informed the mediators it was ready to resume ceasefire talks, but reaffirmed the group’s outstanding demands that any deal must end the war and secure an Israeli withdrawal from the coastal territory.

Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to still be alive, only in a deal that will end the war. Israel says it can only end it if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms.

The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, Israeli tallies show.

Israel’s subsequent military assault has killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry, displaced almost the entire 2.3 million population, plunged the enclave into a humanitarian crisis and left much of it in ruins.
