  • MIL-OSI Canada: Attorney general’s statement on Asian Heritage Month

Source: Government of Canada regional news

Niki Sharma, Attorney General, has released the following statement in celebration of Asian Heritage Month:

“Each May, people in British Columbia come together to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honour the many diverse communities of Asian descent who call our province home. I am heartbroken that this year’s festivities began in tragedy, with the brutal act of violence at last weekend’s Lapu Lapu Day event in Vancouver.

“Our sense of grief over this senseless, horrific incident is only made more profound by the fact that Filipinos have given so much to B.C. From law and politics to health care, education and entrepreneurship, Filipinos have been integral in shaping the culture of our province. We are proud to be home to the second-largest Filipino diaspora in the country.

“The response we have already seen from people in British Columbia to this tragedy reminds us of the core message of Asian Heritage Month, resiliency. From East to South Asia, from Southeast Asia to the Middle East, people of Asian heritage have contributed immeasurably to the social, cultural, economic and political landscape of B.C.

“Chinese workers helped build our railways, Filipinos have been the backbone of our health-care system, Japanese Canadian families on the coast were pivotal to our fishing industries, South Asian farmers have kept us nourished – the list goes on. Most importantly, our ancestors did all of this in the face of tragedy, systemic discrimination, colonial policies, internment and racial violence.

“Let us honour their memories and efforts by recommitting ourselves to building a province where everyone, regardless of race, background or heritage, can live with dignity, in safety and have equal opportunity. Let us take our cue from those before us who never wavered in their commitment to building community, advocating for justice and believing in a better future, no matter what obstacle they faced.

“Let us not only honour the past but look forward, with hope and resolve. Happy Asian Heritage Month, B.C.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ricketts Spends State Work Period Fighting for Nebraska Priorities

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Pete Ricketts (Nebraska)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) highlighted his efforts to fight for Nebraska priorities during the recent Senate state work period. Ricketts led a bipartisan delegation trip to the Philippines and Taiwan focused on deterring Communist China. Trade issues were also discussed. He then held a series of public events in Nebraska. Those included town halls in Scottsbluff, Valentine, and Kearney. He made the following comments while on a conference call with Nebraska media:

“Before Easter, I visited the Philippines and Taiwan,” said Ricketts. “I met with the leaders in both those countries. We discussed ways to push back on Communist China’s aggression. Communist China is our greatest external threat.”

Ricketts also underscored the potential for expanded trade opportunities for Nebraska agriculture producers.

“There is a lot of interest in signing new trade deals,” said Ricketts. “For example, Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao expressed an interest in buying more of our soybeans instead of buying them from Brazil. Others expressed interest in buying more of our natural gas. They know Communist China is a bad trading partner. They want to work with us. There’s a lot of opportunity. We need to start cutting these trade deals.”

In addition, Ricketts recapped the many public events he held across Nebraska. This included three town halls, roundtable conversations in Grand Island and Scottsbluff, a cattle branding in Sioux County, and events in Lincoln with Nebraska Farm Bureau and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

“I shared how I’m working with President Trump to secure the southern border, protect the 2017 tax cuts, and support Nebraska agriculture,” continued Ricketts. “I gave an update on how I’m fighting to address our $36 trillion national debt – which is our greatest domestic threat. I also heard feedback and answered questions directly from Nebraskans. These conversations help me stay connected to the priorities and values of my constituents.”

    TRANSCRIPT:

Senator Ricketts: “Over the last two weeks, I focused on some of the priorities that we face now as a nation.

“For example, specifically deterring China and tackling our debt.

“Before Easter, I visited the Philippines and Taiwan.

“I met with the leaders in both those countries.

“We discussed ways to push back on Communist China’s aggression.

“Communist China is our greatest external threat.

“Xi Jinping has said that he wants to be the world’s dominating power by 2049.

“Communist China’s dramatic military buildup and increasingly provocative actions are designed to force everyone else to bend to its will.

“Just this week, it took over an island in the West Philippine Sea.

“In the past, they have stolen intellectual property and continue to do so.

“They manipulate or disregard rules to gain advantages that risk our security.

“That threatens our security and threatens the security of many of our allies and partners.

“We also discussed expanding trade opportunities for American producers.

“There is a lot of interest in signing new trade deals.

“For example, Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao expressed an interest in buying more of our soybeans instead of buying them from Brazil.

“Others expressed interest in buying more of our natural gas.

“They know Communist China is a bad trading partner. They want to work with us.

“There’s a lot of opportunity. We need to start cutting these trade deals.

“Last week, I held public events in the Western, Central, and Eastern parts of our state.

“For example, I hosted three town halls in Scottsbluff, Valentine, and Kearney.

“At these town halls, I shared updates on my work in Washington.

“I shared how I’m working with President Trump to secure the southern border, protect the 2017 tax cuts, and support Nebraska agriculture.

“I gave an update on how I’m fighting to address our $36 trillion national debt – which is our greatest domestic threat.

“I also heard feedback and answered questions directly from Nebraskans.

“These conversations help me stay connected to the priorities and values of my constituents.

“In addition to the townhalls, I spoke to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

“I gave a legislative update and answered questions about taxes, tariffs, and other topics.

“In Lincoln, I partnered with Nebraska Farm Bureau to call for making the Trump tax cuts permanent.

“If the tax cuts expire, Americans would see a $4 trillion tax increase.

“That would hurt Nebraska families, farmers, and small businesses.

“The child tax credit will be cut by $1,000.

“The standard deduction will be cut in half.

“And the deduction for the Death Tax would also be cut in half, putting our Nebraska family farms and ranches at risk.

“If these tax cuts were to expire, a family of four making $80,000 would pay $1,700 more in taxes.

“I want to see Nebraskans’ taxes cut, not raised.

“I also held several important roundtable meetings.

“In Grand Island, I heard directly from local Chambers of Commerce.

“They shared their strategies for economic development and revitalization.

“For example, I heard about the Kearney sportsplex, which is attracting events from all over the region.

“In fact, they told me that they are entirely booked, having only two open weeks from now until 2029.

    “That’s huge for central Nebraska.

“In Scottsbluff, I sat down with agriculture leaders.

“They shared with me the challenges facing rural communities.

“Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers feed the world.

“I’m committed to passing a comprehensive farm bill that delivers the tools they need to succeed.

“While in western Nebraska, I took part in a cattle branding in Sioux County.

“Branding is a great part of western life.

“It’s tough, honest work that brings families and communities together.

“The brand identifies cattle and protects against theft.

“The calves are also vaccinated to protect their health.

“Nebraska is the Beef State because of the grit demonstrated every day by our ranchers.

“I’ll always advocate for Nebraska agriculture.

“In addition, my team and I are hosting Mobile Office Hours in every single county.

“We did that in all 93 counties last year – twice.

“We help Nebraskans navigate the federal bureaucracy.

“And I’ll continue fighting every day to make sure Nebraskans’ voices are heard in Washington.

    “Nebraskans deserve nothing less.”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative James E (Jim) Clyburn (6th District of South Carolina)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn (SC-06) released the following statement on Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to South Carolina to deliver remarks on economic policy:

“South Carolinians will not be fooled by J.D. Vance’s rhetoric. The Trump Administration’s economic record in its first 100 days has been an abysmal failure, and a substantial course correction is needed to prevent grave harm to families and businesses. Trump’s exorbitant tariffs—imposed on countless essential products without any strategy—are increasing costs, jeopardizing retirement savings, threatening jobs, and putting small businesses at risk.  We are one of the most trade-dependent states in the nation, and are proud of our contributions to the global economy. South Carolina stands to be harmed disproportionately.  The Vice President would be better served by using his visit today to hear from South Carolinians from all walks of life—longshoremen, autoworkers, farmers, aircraft assemblers, hospitality employees, small business owners, and everyone else trying to make ends meet and urging the Administration to alter its approach before it is too late.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Xi Story: From grit to greatness, hard work builds a nation

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

BEIJING, May 1 — Prior to International Workers’ Day 2025, the Great Hall of the People in Beijing — the heart of China’s political life — welcomed a proud assembly: over 2,000 exemplary representatives drawn from the country’s vast workforce of hundreds of millions.

In a ceremony on Monday, President Xi Jinping joined technicians, judges, nurses, and farmers to recognize not only their vital contributions, but also the spirit of dedication and hard work that fuels a nation.

Hailing the honorees as exemplars of the people and pillars of the country, Xi called on citizens to draw inspiration from them — staying grounded and working hard — so that, step by step, they can turn the grand vision of national rejuvenation into reality.

Xi sent the message at the gathering marking the 100th anniversary of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. It drives home a point he has long emphasized — great dreams are not achieved by waiting or chanting slogans; they are earned through hard work and determination.

A LEADER FORGED THROUGH HARD WORK

Xi’s respect for hard work is built on his own past.

In 1969, just shy of 16, Xi arrived at Liangjiahe, a rugged village on the arid Loess Plateau in northwest China, to work the fields alongside the farmers who called the rural community home.

He took on nearly every kind of task, but spent an especially large number of hours on one in particular: building the dams by compacting the earth layer by layer with heavy stone pounders.

Xi threw himself into the labor. Day one left his hands blistered; day two saw them bleeding. Still, he kept working without complaint.

“What a fine lad,” remarked the locals.

The hard work did not end when Xi was elected Party chief of Liangjiahe in 1974. He rolled up his sleeves and led villagers in digging wells, building terraced fields, and installing biogas pits — gradually transforming the community.

Living and working alongside the farmers for seven years, Xi grew from a slightly bewildered teenager into a man determined to serve the people.

“Most importantly,” he later said, “I learned from my fellow farmers the values of respecting facts and working hard with perseverance.”

Those formative years left an indelible mark on Xi, shaping the strong work ethic that has been his character either as village Party chief or general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

He works tirelessly, juggling domestic meetings, inspections and overseas visits — his schedule always packed to the brim.

In a rare reflective moment during a foreign media interview, Xi was asked about life as China’s leader. His candid reply laid bare his sacrifice. “My personal time? It’s all consumed by work,” he said. “Entrusted by the people … I must put them first, serving with unwavering diligence.”

    MODEL WORKERS AS STARS

“What a galaxy of stars,” Xi said at a conference room ahead of International Workers’ Day in 2013.

By a “galaxy of stars,” he was referring to the 65 role models before him, those honored for their hard work in their industries over the past decades.

Liang Jun, one of the earliest model workers, recounted how she helped turn northeast China’s barren land into a national granary.

After listening to Liang’s story, Xi told the then 84-year-old lady, “Your deeds are well known to our generation. As the first female tractor driver in China, you are truly remarkable.”

As a leader who emerged from the ranks of the working people, Xi not only respects them but is also committed to ensuring that their needs are met.

Since Xi took the helm of China in 2012, the country has introduced more measures, laws and regulations to safeguard workers’ rights and interests.

Moreover, Xi often visits workers during domestic inspection tours to personally assess their working and living conditions.

In 2023, he inspected a residential community in Shanghai built to house workers such as construction laborers, delivery drivers and sanitation staff.

He stepped into their homes and shared facilities — public kitchens, laundries — and spoke with them to understand their living conditions firsthand.

“Migrant workers, who come to contribute to Shanghai, are equally the city’s masters,” he stressed. “It is our responsibility to ensure they can arrive, settle down, live comfortably, and thrive here.”

INVESTMENT IN SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE

At Monday’s celebration ceremony, Xi underscored the importance of adapting to the new wave of technological and industrial transformation and enhancing the workforce’s capabilities.

“High-quality development cannot be achieved without high-quality work and innovation,” he said.

This resonates with his consistent emphasis on the crucial role of skilled talent in advancing the manufacturing sector.

Over the years, Xi’s passion for craftsmanship has taken him to factory floors across the country, where he encouraged engineers, technicians and workers to hone their skills and push boundaries.

“Times may change and missions may shift, but the spirit of hard work, unity, and unyielding effort should never change,” he said at Monday’s ceremony.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Why Donald Trump’s trade tariffs are a threat to global food security

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Lotanna Emediegwu, Senior Lecturer in Economics, Manchester Metropolitan University

    Billion Photos/Shutterstock

Donald Trump’s tariffs will make many things more expensive for his fellow US citizens. The price of imported cars, building materials and some tech will go up – and so will the cost of the food on American dining tables.

The US currently imports around 16% of its food supply, with a large proportion of its fruit and vegetables coming from countries now hit by tariffs.

Mexico stands out. It supplies over half the fresh fruit and nearly 70% of the fresh vegetables consumed in the US.

And even when it comes to home grown produce, the US still depends on imported fertiliser for its crops, with Canada providing up to 85% of its neighbour’s supply.

So grocery bills for American families, especially for fresh produce (and processed foods dependent on foreign ingredients) will get higher. But there will also be a noticeable effect on food prices outside the US.

The consequences could be particularly serious for developing economies that rely on stable international prices to secure affordable food imports. The prices of many global staples including maize, wheat and soybeans are benchmarked against US markets so when disruptions occur, they reverberate globally.

Research I conducted with a colleague found that when international prices are disturbed, local food prices, especially in developing countries, go up.

Take global maize prices, which this year rose by 7% between April 2 (Trump’s “liberation day”) and April 11. Our study suggests this will immediately lead to a similar increase in local maize prices in places like sub-Saharan Africa.

This is where many of the world’s poorest people live, with hundreds of millions in households earning below the World Bank’s poverty line of US$2.15 (£1.61) per day. When much of that income is spent on food, a 7% increase in the price of maize could be devastating.

    Growth market

According to another study, tariffs on agricultural products such as fertiliser will increase global production costs, potentially lowering crop yields and worsening food insecurity.

While the US has reduced tariffs on Canadian potash from 25% to 10%, other fertiliser producers face steeper levels (up to 28% for another major exporter, Tunisia, before Trump’s reciprocal tariffs were paused).

This is especially worrying for agriculture in countries like Brazil, India and Nigeria, which are still reeling from fertiliser shortages caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine. As with food costs, US tariffs are likely to drive up prices in the global fertiliser market, making it more expensive for everyone, everywhere.

And when the cost of farming rises, crop production can suffer. This could significantly weaken food production in developing countries that are already battling climate change and volatile markets.

Another study I conducted found that countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia – already struggling with food insecurity – are among the most vulnerable to local food price shocks. These economies depend heavily on food imports and face high exposure to currency fluctuations and transport costs.

A banana field in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
    giulio napolitano/Shutterstock

If the trade war escalates, farmers in these regions may be forced to abandon staple crops for cash commodities such as cocoa or coffee, deepening their reliance on volatile global markets and reducing their food self-sufficiency. Global inequality will worsen unless things change.

One option would be to protect essential agricultural imports, especially fertilizers and staple foods, from punitive tariffs. This would stabilise prices and protect vulnerable economies. The recently announced 90-day pause for negotiations offers a glimmer of hope, but it must be used wisely to build a more equitable trading system.

In the long term, developing countries need to bolster the resilience of their food systems. My research recommends investing heavily in mechanised agriculture which is resilient to climate change, incentivising farmers with government support, and strengthening regional trade.

The global food system is heavily interconnected. Decisions made in Washington can quickly affect food prices in Lagos, Cairo and New Delhi. And if tariffs go unchecked, they may unleash a silent and subtle crisis – one measured not in GDP, but in millions of empty stomachs.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Astonishing Things: The Drawings of Victor Hugo at the Royal Academy is dark and brilliant

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Martin Lang, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Fine Art , University of Lincoln

The Royal Academy’s latest exhibition, Astonishing Things: The Drawings of Victor Hugo offers a rare glimpse into the dark and moody world of the renowned writer best known for his novels The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Les Misérables.

The exhibition is set in exceptionally low lighting, a necessary measure to preserve the fragile drawings, which are usually only accessible under archival conditions. This dim ambience enhances the foreboding atmosphere of Hugo’s works, which are often landscapes featuring cathedrals that appear to be in ruin or emerging from mist or dust clouds.

These drawings are reminiscent of Dennis Creffield’s gestural, energetic and dark, cathedral sketches. Hugo’s are similar, but much smaller and with a more post-apocalyptic and surreal twist.

Titles like The Dead City attest to this, while Breakwater on Jersey, with its obscure imagery that recalls looking up a steep incline towards some towers, evokes a sense of Gothic horror, reminiscent of Dracula.

Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here.

Other drawings in the exhibition are more surreal. One features a giant mushroom with a face looming over a desolate landscape, eerily evoking nuclear war (something that Hugo could not have possibly fathomed in 1850). Windmill on the Roof of a Farmhouse depicts a windmill improbably emerging from another building, adding to the surreal quality of Hugo’s work. And, one of the first drawings visitors encounter is of a poisonous tree with a skull emerging from its shadow, setting the tone for the exhibition.

The Serpent resembles a Chinese dragon twisting through the sky over the sea with a mountain obscured in mist below its fire-breathing jaws. The light specs illuminating the water add to the mystery, as the light source itself remains unclear. Is the light emanating from the dragon’s mouth or from behind the mountain? This ambiguity adds to the surreal quality of the work.

The Bowels of Leviathan is one of the largest and most abstract pieces in the exhibition. Loose brushwork, possibly created with a large brush or feather (as suggested by the wall text) fills the surface. Vertical lines appear like prison bars in a dark arch (one of many allusions to Les Misérables in the exhibition), while the title actually refers to the Parisian sewers – a recurring theme in Hugo’s novel.

Several drawings in the exhibition can be interpreted as metaphors for political turmoil. Lighthouse at Casquets, Guernsey features a heavily tilting ship, while Boat without Sails depicts what appears to be a single piece of wood from a ship wreck, or perhaps a raft afloat.

Ship in a Storm further emphasises the theme of stormy waters, reflecting the turbulent political landscape of Hugo’s time. His father was a general in the Napoleonic empire, which crumbled when Victor was 12. He saw the Bourbon monarchy restored, then the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. Not only a witness, Hugo was deeply involved in politics, resulting in his exile to the Chanel Islands, where he made most of the drawings on display, during the reign of Napoleon III.

The Durande Ship After Sinking and The Wreck are positioned on either side of Octopus, a fantastical depiction of what lies beneath the stormy seas. Or perhaps life after the storm, strange and other worldly. There are two versions of Octopus on display, both of which would not look out of place as illustrations for a H.P. Lovecraft novel. These pieces suggest a strange and otherworldly life after turmoil and the sense of uncertainty feels oddly present today.

Hugo’s use of lace imprints and collage, such as postage stamps, was avant-garde for his time. He combined charcoal, pen, brown ink and wash, gouache, graphite, and more, showcasing his experimental approach to art. Compositionally, these works are sophisticated and live up to Van Gogh’s description of them as “astonishing things”.

Astonishing Things: The Drawings of Victor Hugo at the Royal Academy is a captivating exhibition that offers a rare opportunity to experience the dark and surreal world of one of history’s most celebrated writers and artists. The exhibition is a must-see for art lovers and fans of Victor Hugo alike.

Astonishing Things: The Drawings of Victor Hugo is on at the Royal Academy, London until June 29 2025.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The woman who turned the Met Gala into the biggest party of the year

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Elizabeth Castaldo Lundén, SweAmfo/ASF Research Fellow at USC School of Cinematic Arts | Fulbright Scholar, University of Southern California

The annual Met Gala in New York City is a dazzling collision of celebrity, fashion and media frenzy.

The event is ostensibly a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which houses a vast collection of historical costumes and fashion artifacts.

But for many people, it’s that time of year when their social media feeds become awash with posts, stories and live streams of A-list actors, musicians and influencers ascending the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to showcase their elaborate outfits.

The gala has come a long way since its early days as an intimate fundraising event for the local fashion industry and New York’s old-guard elite.

Through my research at the Met’s Thomas J. Watson Library, I discovered the ways in which a former fashion editor named Diana Vreeland elevated this formerly stuffy charity ball into a global media sensation.

    A low-key affair

Philanthropist and arts patron Irene Lewisohn launched the Museum of Costume Art in 1937 to promote the preservation and study of historical clothing. In 1946, New York fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert helped bring the museum’s collection under the purview of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the caveat that it would operate independently of the museum’s budget. It was then renamed the Costume Institute.

Dorothy Shaver burnished the reputation of the Costume Institute in its early years.

In 1948, Lambert organized the inaugural gala to raise funds for the institute. The following year, Lord & Taylor president Dorothy Shaver established a formal management structure for both the institute and its annual gala, streamlined operations, and helped burnish the reputation of the fledgling institution among New York’s social elite. During her tenure, gala revenues climbed steadily, from US$31,723 in 1949 to $118,775 in 1958 – roughly $1.3 million in today’s dollars.

The Met Gala that Shaver shaped looked similar, in many ways, to today’s: There was a theme, a formal dinner, live entertainment and a fashion parade that attendees could participate in. There were also a photographers row, where guests could be snapped by famed fashion photographers for a fee, and raffles with department store prizes.

After Shaver’s death in 1958, department store executives continued to steer the gala, but attendance and revenue waned. In 1961, in an effort to cut costs and revive interest, the event was moved into the museum itself.

The gala needed a reinvention. Soon, it would get one.

    Vreeland’s vision

Diana Vreeland took the reins of the Met Gala in 1973.

She’d had a storied career in fashion journalism, including stints as fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar and editor-in-chief of Vogue.

Vreeland, however, understood that in order for the gala to grow, it needed to become a newsworthy event that would be of interest to those who might not even attend the gala itself. So she selected spectacular, sometimes controversial themes that would generate interest from the press.

Vreeland’s first exhibition in 1973 was bold: a tribute to a single designer, Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The World of Balenciagawas funded by the Spanish government, Iberia Airlines and five Spanish banks – a controversial move, considering Spain was still under Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. The show featured Franco’s granddaughter’s wedding dress as one of the central pieces.

Some curators also bristled at Vreeland’s unorthodox approach to exhibition planning, such as blurring time periods, displaying clothes without providing historical context and prioritizing beauty over scholarship.

“She knows fashion and who wore it,” one former museum official said, “but she doesn’t know history.”

Nonetheless, critics deemed the gala and its accompanying exhibition a huge success. American designer Stan Herman declared that the garments “belong in a museum, like good paintings.”

In the coming years, Vreeland’s other themes included “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design,” “The ‘10s, ’20s and ’30s,” and “American Women of Style.” The latter was accompanied by a Vogue magazine spread starring actress and model Marisa Berenson, who channeled iconic American “it girls” like Irene Castle, Consuelo Vanderbilt and Josephine Baker.

Models and actresses wear costumes and masks for the Costume Institute’s 1974 exhibition ‘Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design.’ Diana Vreeland is seated in the center, sans mask.

    Buzz and pizzazz

Before Vreeland, coverage of the gala was limited to society pages and publications like Women’s Wear Daily.

Vreeland knew how to generate buzz because she thought like an editor. She also knew how to charm the press. Vreeland popularized words like “pizzazz,” “splendeur” and “deeveen.” She told tales of discovering model and actress Lauren Bacall and the work of fashion designer Roy Halston. She regaled reporters with stories of allegedly visiting Buffalo Bill in Wyoming.

Under Vreeland’s leadership, media coverage of the gala and exhibitions exploded, with articles appearing in The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, People, Interview, Le Figaro, Le Monde, Revista Hola!, ABC de las Americas, Il Tempo, Paris Herald Tribune and Tokyo’s High Fashion, among others. During her tenure, she also opened the doors to reporters and photographers so they could cover the night of the event.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily she said, “I am an entertainer. And I believe in wit, and good nature, and laughter.”

    Corporate controversies

With “The World of Balenciaga,” Vreeland also pioneered the use of corporate sponsorships to finance the exhibitions and parties. In 1982, Pierre Cardin Management funded “La Belle Époque,” a Met Gala theme associated with the relaunch of the famed Paris restaurant Maxim’s, in which Cardin had invested.

In 1983, Vreeland courted controversy again with the first exhibition honoring a living designer — Yves Saint Laurent — underwritten by the Pierre Bergé Foundation. Bergé was Saint Laurent’s life and business partner.

The show was launched amid rumors of the designer’s declining health and growing criticism of the museum being exploited as a publicity platform.

“One day the god of the Temple of Dendur will cry: ‘I am not on earth to share a museum with a bunch of fashion freaks!’” critic John Heilpern groused in the East Side Express.

The following year, Ralph Lauren became the central sponsor and guest of honor for “Man and the Horse.”

    Sonia Moskowitz/Getty Images

    The Met set

Under Vreeland, a new kind of guest list also emerged.

The rise of celebrity culture in the 1960s gave birth to the “jet set” – beautiful people whose fame transcended traditional society circles.

Vreeland embraced this shift. She made space at the gala for the likes of Andy Warhol, Bianca and Mick Jagger, Halston and his Halstonettes, David Bowie, Cher, Diana Ross, Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson.

Their presence helped transform the gala from society soirée to pop culture phenomenon.

After Vreeland’s death in 1989, the event lost some its splendor under the guidance of museum curators. Women’s Wear Daily columnist Aileen Mehle later lamented the decline, writing that the event had become “a far cry from the dear old Diana Vreeland days when that fashion oracle called the Costume Institute’s shots, and elegance and anticipation abounded.”

In the late 1990s, however, the museum curators who had run the event since Vreeland’s death ceded control back to the fashion industry. High-end brands like Chanel, Versace and Christian Dior sponsored the Met Gala, while fashion editors such as Liz Tilberis and Anna Wintour chaired the event.

By channeling Vreeland’s vision, they were able to turn the gala into the global media spectacle it is today, which now thrives in an era of social media and global branding.

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Styles,” is co-chaired by rapper-producer Pharrell Williams, who is also the artistic director of Menswear at Louis Vuitton. The LVMH conglomerate – Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton – is the sponsor, showing how the gala continues to operate as a platform where corporate branding, celebrity culture and high culture converge.

  • MIL-OSI: Unmanned Drones Carrying Bathymetric Lidar Systems Being Utilized to Cover Larger Areas Quickly

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

PALM BEACH, Fla., May 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FN Media Group News Commentary – LIDAR is being used in more industries across all markets and in many environments… one of which is water. People have studied the underwater depth of river, sea, and ocean floors for thousands of years to be able to safely navigate boats through the water. Today, such depth measurements are done using advanced technology that includes either sound (sonar), or laser pulses (LiDAR). The study of underwater topographies is called bathymetry, whereas studying underwater depths is known under terms such as seafloor mapping or imaging. According to a recent report from Precedence Research the global LiDAR market, including bathymetric LiDAR, is projected to reach a substantial $13.74 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 21.56% from 2024 to 2033. This growth is driven by increased adoption in various sectors, including autonomous vehicles, infrastructure development, and environmental applications like forestry and flood modeling. A recent article by an industry insider said: “Bathymetric LiDAR was first used to detect submarines. However, many more applications have been developed that use bathymetric LiDAR as a result of advancing sensor technology. With smaller platforms including unmanned drones and small helicopters that can carry heavier payloads, bathymetric LiDAR systems can cover large areas quickly and capture accurate 3D data that includes the seabed and surrounding terrain of different water bodies.   Over time, bathymetric LiDAR has proven to be a fast, reliable, accurate, and safe technique for rapidly mapping nearshore waters, beaches, coastal engineering structures, and more. Compared to traditional methods, such as sonar-based systems or manual depth soundings, bathymetric LiDAR can generate more detailed and precise maps of underwater topography. It also allows for seamless mapping of both water and surrounding land, with the ability to reach up to three times the visible water depth.” Active Companies in the drone industry today include ZenaTech, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZENA), Draganfly Inc. (NASDAQ: DPRO), AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV), Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), Ouster, Inc. (NASDAQ: OUST).

The article continued: “The advantage of using green light for bathymetric LiDAR is that it penetrates further into the water than other frequencies, to capture deeper depths that standard bathymetry methods may miss. Green light also scatters less off suspended particles than other wavelengths, reducing inaccuracies caused by suspended sediment or algae in the water column.   Bathymetric LiDAR is also a more sustainable and safer option for underwater mapping as it doesn’t require expensive and fuel-consuming survey vessels, or people entering the water. These might get lost or injured during surveys, while the use of bathymetric LiDAR sensors eliminates such potential risks. Bathymetric LiDAR technology offers rapid, accurate, and cost-effective data collection for hydrographic surveying, which involves measuring the physical features of water bodies (depth, currents, and underwater topography). Using bathymetric LiDAR, submerged archeological sites are found and studied, such as ancient shipwrecks and submerged settlements.”

ZenaTech’s (NASDAQ:ZENA) Drone as a Service (DaaS) Offerings Expand to Bathymetric Surveys for Underwater Terrain Mapping for Commercial and Government Customers ZenaTech, Inc. (FSE: 49Q) (BMV: ZENA) (“ZenaTech”), a technology company specializing in AI (Artificial Intelligence) drones, Drone as a Service (DaaS), enterprise SaaS, and Quantum Computing solutions, announces its DaaS offerings have expanded to include bathymetric surveys, a specialized method of mapping underwater terrain using drones equipped with sonar. These surveys are important for critical underwater depth and contour data to support maintenance, dredging, environmental planning, and aquatic development for both commercial and government customers.

ZenaTech’s DaaS bathymetric surveys are now available in South Florida through the recently acquired Wallace Surveying where the team has both golf course and Intracoastal Waterway project relationships and surveying expertise. Utilizing advanced sonar and ZenaDrone drones, high-resolution underwater maps help customers make informed decisions ─ from enhanced water management and lake and channel design strategies, to ensuring long-term sustainability.

“The Wallace team brings key customer relationships and bathymetric survey expertise that will enhance our national DaaS drone offerings. Bathymetric surveys using aerial drones offer faster, safer, and more cost-effective data collection, especially in hard-to-reach or hazardous environments. Unlike conventional manned survey vessel methods, drones require fewer personnel, reduce operational risks, and can access shallow or narrow areas with greater precision,” said CEO Shaun Passley, Ph.D.

According to DataIntelo market research, the global Bathymetry Survey Sonar Market was valued at approximately $1.2 billion in 2023, this market is projected to reach $2.1 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 6.2%. This encompasses sonar systems utilized in bathymetric surveys, including those deployed on drones.

ZenaTech’s DaaS business will incorporate the ZenaDrone 1000 and the IQ series of multifunction autonomous drones to provide a variety of service solutions from land surveys to power line inspections or power washing, made accessible and cost effective through an Uber-like business model on a regular subscription or pay-per-use basis. Customers can conveniently access drones for eliminating manual or time-consuming tasks achieving superior results, such as for surveying, inspections, security and law enforcement, or precision farming applications, without having to buy, operate, or maintain the drones themselves.

The DaaS business model offers customers such as government agencies, real estate developers, construction firms, farmers or energy companies reduced upfront costs as there is no need to purchase expensive drones, as well as convenience, as there is no need to manage maintenance and operation. The model also offers scalability to use more often or less often based on business needs and enables access to advanced drone technology sensors or attachments without the need for specialized training.   Continued… Read this full release by visiting: https://www.financialnewsmedia.com/news-zena/

  • MIL-OSI: WISeKey Confirms June Launch of Next-Generation WISeSat Satellite with SpaceX Featuring Encrypted Communications and SEALCOIN Integration

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

WISeKey Confirms June Launch of Next-Generation WISeSat Satellite with SpaceX Featuring Encrypted Communications and SEALCOIN Integration

Geneva, Switzerland, May 1, 2025 –WISeKey International Holding Ltd (“WISeKey”) (SIX: WIHN, NASDAQ: WKEY), a leading global cybersecurity, blockchain, and IoT company, today announces the upcoming launch of its next-generation WISeSat.Space satellite aboard a SpaceX mission in June 2025. This milestone marks a major technological step forward for WISeSat.Space’s secure space communications infrastructure and the deployment of Transactional IoT (t-IoT) solutions directly from orbit.

The upcoming satellite launch introduces two significant innovations: first, the capability to establish secure, encrypted communications with WISePhone mobile devices, and second, the integration of SEALCOIN, a decentralized agent embedded in the satellite enabling machine-to-machine (M2M) transactions from space. These features significantly enhance the utility of WISeSat.Space’s constellation, as it evolves toward a fully decentralized, secure IoT and communications network supporting autonomous digital ecosystems.

This development supports WISeSat.Space’s ongoing mission to deliver secure, scalable IoT connectivity from space and strengthens European independence in satellite communications. By anchoring its infrastructure in Europe, WISeSat.Space ensures data sovereignty and helps reduce reliance on non-European providers for strategic technologies, in line with EU objectives for technological resilience and autonomy.

The new generation of WISeSat.Space satellites are compact picosatellites that leverage SEALSQ Corp. (“SEALSQ”) (NASDAQ: LAES) semiconductors and WISeKey’s advanced cryptographic keys, including quantum-resistant algorithms. These satellites are optimized for secure, low-power, and long-range data collection in off-grid and remote locations. Their applications span environmental monitoring, disaster management, industrial automation, and smart agriculture. The technology ensures encrypted end-to-end data transmission, enabling safe and reliable operations in critical sectors.

The launch will also include a Proof of Concept (PoC) demonstrating SEALCOIN’s potential to facilitate secure, decentralized satellite-initiated transactions with IoT devices without human intervention. Built on Hedera’s Decentralized Ledger Technology (DLT), SEALCOIN offers transparent, tamper-proof, and autonomous transaction capability, paving the way for a scalable transactional IoT infrastructure. This breakthrough sets the stage for next-generation M2M applications in smart cities, logistics, environmental sensing, and beyond.

WISeSat a secure nanosatellite platform developed by WISeKey, through its space division, WISeSat.Space, is designed to provide resilient, encrypted, and globally accessible connectivity for IoT ecosystems. Its primary function is to enable secure, satellite-based communication for IoT devices deployed in remote, hard-to-reach, or infrastructure-poor areas where traditional terrestrial networks (such as fiber, 4G/5G, or Wi-Fi) are unavailable, unreliable, or too costly to implement.

A key use case is in precision agriculture, where WISeSat can connect sensors measuring soil moisture, temperature, crop health, and irrigation needs, helping farmers optimize yields, reduce water waste, and increase sustainability, even in rural or developing regions. This satellite connectivity ensures constant data flow regardless of geography or local telecom limitations.

Another important application is in environmental monitoring and climate science. Sensors deployed in remote forests, oceans, glaciers, or protected natural areas can transmit real-time data on air quality, deforestation, wildlife movement, or water levels. This helps governments, researchers, and NGOs make faster decisions on conservation, disaster prevention, or policy implementation.

In industries such as oil and gas, mining, and maritime logistics, WISESat provides critical connectivity to monitor and control assets located in offshore rigs, remote mines, or cargo ships. This includes real-time tracking of machinery health, fuel consumption, emissions, and security status. Similarly, in global supply chains, the platform enables secure monitoring of the condition and location of containers and high-value goods as they traverse continents, oceans, and customs zones, greatly reducing theft, spoilage, and logistical inefficiencies.

Healthcare is another frontier where WISESat is impactful. In remote or underserved areas, health monitoring devices and mobile clinics can use the satellite network to transmit patient data securely to centralized hospitals or doctors, enabling telemedicine and diagnostics even during emergencies or pandemics. It is especially critical for applications like vaccine refrigeration monitoring, ensuring proper storage temperatures in regions lacking stable electricity or cellular coverage.

WISeSat also enhances disaster response capabilities. During earthquakes, hurricanes, blackouts or wildfires, terrestrial infrastructure is often destroyed or disrupted. WISeSat ensures that emergency response units and sensor networks continue to transmit data on ground conditions, population movement, and structural damage, enabling faster, data-driven response coordination.

From a cybersecurity standpoint, WISESat integrates WISeKey’s advanced cryptographic technologies, including post-quantum encryption developed through its SEALSQ subsidiary. This makes it suitable for high-security applications such as defense, critical infrastructure monitoring, smart cities, and government communication, where data integrity and identity verification are essential. It also supports remote identity management, enabling secure authentication of both devices and users over satellite links.

WISeSat serves as a critical enabler of secure digital transformation in sectors where uninterrupted, trustworthy, and decentralized connectivity is mission-critical. It bridges the digital divide and protects data integrity from the sky, ushering in a new era of trusted space-based communications.

In parallel, the satellite’s upgraded semiconductor components, developed by SEALSQ, will enhance processing and communications capabilities, enabling faster and more responsive data transmission. These improvements are essential for real-time monitoring and automation in industries affected by climate change and other dynamic conditions.

With this launch, WISeKey reaffirms its commitment to advancing secure, decentralized digital infrastructure from space while supporting Europe’s leadership in satellite innovation. The June mission represents a major leap forward in enabling trusted connectivity, secure IoT transactions, and autonomous systems that extend far beyond Earth’s surface.

  • MIL-OSI USA: 100 Days of Fighting Fake News

Source: US Federal Emergency Management Agency

Headline: 100 Days of Fighting Fake News

lass=”text-align-center”> From Stories on Criminals to Statistics, DHS has been Holding the Media Accountable for Spreading Disinformation to the American people
WASHINGTON— During President Trump’s 100 days in office, the Department of Homeland Security published a non exhaustive list of facts, to help set the record straight on numerous false and misleading stories that have spread around news coverage and social media

The list can be found below:
The Facts on Noteworthy Individuals Deported or Prevented from Entering the U

    S

    The Deportation Of American Citizens

The media has FALSELY claimed that ICE is deporting US citizen children of illegal aliens

    This is false

In both cases the mother made the determination to take her children with her back to Honduras

DHS takes our responsibility to protect children seriously and will continue to work with federal law enforcement to ensure that children are safe and protected

The Trump Administration is giving parents in this country illegally the opportunity to self-deport and take control of their departure process with the potential ability to return the legal, right way and come back to live the American dream

The CBP Home app is a free and easy way to self deport

Kilmar Abrego Garcia – The “Maryland Man”

Garcia is NOT an American citizen

He is a citizen of El Salvador who had been living in the country illegally

In 2019, two courts – an immigration court and an appellate immigration court – ruled that he was not only a member of MS-13, but that he was in our country illegally

There was a deportation order for him dating back to 2019

Further details about Garcia’s history prove that he is far from innocent

In 2020, his wife filed a petition for protection citing three separate instances of violence
In 2021, his wife filed for a restraining order against him due to domestic violence

In 2022, Garcia was pulled over by Tennessee Highway Patrol with 8 people crammed into one car

Despite telling the officers that they were going on a trip from Houston, Texas to Temple Hills, Maryland, there was no sign of luggage in the car

It was later revealed that the vehicle Garcia was driving during this stop was registered to another illegal alien who had been convicted of human trafficking, Jose Roman Hernandez Reyes

The media further claimed that the Supreme Court ordered the Trump Administration to return Garcia to the United States

    This is another falsehood

The Supreme Court unanimously overturned that judge’s ruling but instead said that the United States should “facilitate” Garcia’s return

This would only be possible if the government of El Salvador decided to return him, in which case the United States would have to provide transportation

It’s up to Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and the government of El Salvador if they want to return him

But as President Bukele said during his Oval Office visit with President Trump, he has no intention of releasing a terrorist and sending him back to the United States

When President Trump declared MS-13 a foreign terrorist organization, Abrego Garcia became no longer eligible for any form of immigration relief in the United States

He had a valid deportation order

Furthermore, the Supreme Court also held that EVEN IF El Salvador returned this MS-13 member to the United States, we could deport him a second time

NO version of this legally ends with him ever living in the U

    S

, because he is a citizen of El Salvador

The foreign policy of the United States is conducted by the President – not by a court – and no court in the United States has the power to conduct the foreign policy of the United States

    Dr

Rasha Alawieh – “The Brown University Assistant Professor”

    Dr

Rasha Alawieh was an assistant professor at Brown University

She was in the United States with an H-1B visa

She was deported back to her home country of Lebanon after she admitted to attending the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, a brutal terrorist who led Hezbollah and was responsible for killing hundreds of Americans

The media tried to portray Alawieh’s case as an example of a “lawful immigrant” being deported

But they completely ignored her direct and alarming ties to radical Islamic terrorism, including her veneration of a dead terrorist leader

Alfredo “Alex” Orellana – “The Caregiver”

Alfredo “Alex” Orellana has multiple charges on his record from 2012 to 2019, including: distributing drugs, drug possession, assault and battery, failure to appear to court (twice), theft at the second degree, and larceny

He has since been arrested and faces deportation

The New York Times wrote a lengthy article on Orellana’s case

Their article painted a picture of a loving 31-year-old caregiver who was the “best friend” of a 28-year-old autistic man

They also pointed to the fact that Orellana had a green card

The press tried to paint him as a victim who was a caretaker, despite violent charges on his record

Jerce Reyes Barrios – “The Venezuelan Soccer Player”

Jerce Reyes Barrios was in the United States illegally

He was a member of the vicious Tren de Aragua gang, and he was deported to El Salvador

He has tattoos that are consistent with those indicating membership in the vicious Tren de Aragua gang

His own social media indicates that he is a Tren de Aragua member

That hasn’t stopped the media, however

They tried to whip up a frenzy over this deported criminal gang member, publishing wild claims that he was deported because of a tattoo of a soccer team on his arm

    The facts are the facts

Our intelligence assessments go beyond just social media and tattoos

We are confident in our findings

    Nascimento Blair – “The Ex-Con”

Blair was an illegal alien living in the United States who was tried and convicted for kidnapping and sentenced to 15 years in prison

The New York Times published a fawning profile about this criminal illegal alien

In 2008, he was ordered removed out of the country

However, because of the Biden administration’s open border policies, this criminal illegal alien was released onto the streets of New York

The Trump administration is putting the American people first by getting this criminal illegal alien off the streets and out of our country

“The French Scientist Denied Entry Over His Political Views”

In March, a French scientist was denied entry into the United States

The researcher in question was in possession of confidential information on his electronic device from Los Alamos National Laboratory

This was in clear violation of a non-disclosure agreement – something he admitted to taking without permission and attempted to conceal to authorities

The mainstream media ran with the baseless narrative that this individual was blocked from entering the U

    S

because of social media posts that were critical of President Trump

This lie was even echoed by France’s Minister for Higher Education, Philippe Baptiste

His political beliefs were not considered at all in his removal

Marie Lepère and Charlotte Pohl – “German Tourists Turned Away on Vacation”

Two German tourists were denied entry after attempting to enter the U

    S

    under false pretenses

Both claimed they were touring California but later admitted that they intended to work

One used a Visitor visa, while the other used the Visa Waiver Program

    Under U

    S

immigration laws, work is prohibited for these visas

The media version of events depicted two young women who tried to go on a five-week backpacking trip through the United States

The media claimed that the two – aged 18 and 19 – were “deported” because they simply wanted to go on a fun, loosely-planned trip

These travelers weren’t deported—they were denied entry

And the reason for their removal was visa fraud, not because of the planning nature of their so-called “vacation

Jose Hermosillo – “The American Citizen Detained by Border Patrol”

Hermosillo turned himself in to immigration authorities on April 8

He approached Border Patrol in Tucson, Arizona and declared that he had entered the U

    S

    illegally

He completed a sworn statement identifying as a Mexican citizen who had entered unlawfully

He was processed and appeared in court on April 11

Afterwards, he was held by the U

    S

    Marshals in Florence, Arizona

A few days later, his family presented documents showing U

    S

    citizenship

The charges were dismissed, and he was released to his family

The media, instead of reporting the facts, created a false and baseless story that an American citizen was illegally detained

Hermosillio’s arrest was the direct action of his own actions and statements

When his citizenship was confirmed, he was promptly released back to his family

Kseniia Petrova – “The Russian Scientist Trying to Cure Cancer”

Kseniia Petrova, a Russian researcher working for Harvard University, was lawfully detained after lying to federal officers about carrying substances into the country

A subsequent K9 inspection uncovered undeclared petri dishes, containers of unknown substances, and loose vials of embryonic frog cells, all without proper permits

Messages found on her phone revealed she planned to smuggle the materials through customs without declaring them

She knowingly broke the law and took deliberate steps to evade it

But upon her detainment, the media rushed to defend her by claiming that her research could help to cure cancer

The facts of the matter are simple: Petrova broke the law and actively planned to do so

Her research does not make her exempt from the laws of our country

Renato Subotic – “The MMA Coach”

Subotic is an MMA coach who entered the United States under a visa waiver program that prohibits compensation – only travel reimbursements are allowed

When Subotic was detained under American law, the media claimed that he was thrown in prison and deported for no real reason

Here are the facts: Subotic couldn’t meet the requirement to prove he wasn’t being compensated for participating at a high-dollar, multi-day event

The law is clear: the burden of proof is on the traveler

Since he couldn’t provide detailed answers or the necessary documentation for compensation related to the work event, he was held until the next available flight out the following day

Ricardo Jesus Prada Vasquez – The “Disappearing” Delivery Driver

Yet again, the media has manufactured a fake controversy on behalf of a terrorist gang member and criminal illegal alien

Ricardo Jesus Prada Vasquez is a Venezuelan national and confirmed member of Tren De Aragua

He entered the United States illegally on November 29, 2024 at the Brownsville, Texas Port of Entry via the CBP One App

The Biden administration, like it did with so many other dangerous criminals, released Prada Vasquez back into the United States

On January 15th, Prada was encountered trying to enter the U

    S

    from Canada

He was detained, investigated, and confirmed as a member of TDA and a public safety threat

On February 27, a judge ordered him removed from the U

    S

He was then removed to El Salvador

The media, however, has falsely claimed that Prada Vasquez was an innocent delivery driver who was “disappeared” by the government

Prada Vasquez was living and working in the U

    S

illegally, he was a member of a criminal gang designated as a terrorist organization, and was deported with full compliance with American law

Jeanette Vizguerra – “The Activist Who Needed Sanctuary”

Jeanette Vizguerra is a convicted criminal alien from Mexico who has a final order of deportation issued by a federal immigration judge

She illegally entered the United States near El Paso, Texas, on Dec

24, 1997, and has received legal due process in U

    S

    immigration court

The media, however, has tried to turn her into a martyr

They claim she was an “activist” who needed “sanctuary

” In reality, she getting famous and making money for breaking the law

Under President Trump, this is a nation of laws

We will find, arrest, and deport illegal aliens, no matter how famous the media thinks they are

Vizguerra was in the United States illegally

She was convicted of breaking the law

    She was deported

If you come to our country illegally, we will deport you, and you will never return

The safest option for illegal aliens is to self-deport, so they still have the opportunity to return and live the American dream

The Facts on Those Who Have Abused The Privilege of a Student Visa

Yunseo Chung – “The Columbia Student”

Yunseo Chung, who was born in South Korea, is a Columbia University student who engaged in concerning conduct on-campus

This includes her being arrested by NYPD during a pro-Hamas protest at Barnard College

Mahmoud Khalil – “The Activist Leader at Columbia”

Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student from Syria, is one of the ringleaders of the vicious, anti-American, anti-Semitic protests at Columbia University

His activities are aligned with Hamas, a designated terrorist organization

On March 9, 2025, in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism, and in coordination with the Department of State, U

    S

Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Khalil

But upon his arrest, radical student protesters at Columbia and across the country have attempted to turn him into a martyr, waving signs and banners bearing his likeness

Taking over private buildings, inciting violence, harassing Jewish students, defacing buildings, and passing out terrorist propaganda do not constitute free speech

A judge ruled that Khalil’s deportation can move forward

He will be removed from our country

Mohsen Mahdawi – “The Palestinian at Columbia University”

Mahdawi is a Palestinian who has been living in the United States on a visa while he was studying at Columbia University

Like many other anti-Israel student protesters, supporters in the media tried to claim that Mahdawi was a victim of political persecution

But his rhetoric on the war in Israel proves his terrorist sympathies

In the wake of October 7, Mahdawi said he could empathize with Hamas’s attack on Israel

He appeared on “60 Minutes” justifying the massacre

He organized and led pro-Hamas protests on Columbia University’s campus, harassed Jewish students, and openly displayed his support for a terrorist organization

Leqaa Kordia – “The Palestinian at Columbia University”

Leqaa Kordia was another Columbia Student who actively participated in anti-American, pro-terrorist activities on campus

However, her arrest had nothing to do with her radical activities

Kordia was arrested for immigration violations due to having overstayed her F-1 student visa, which had been terminated on January 26, 2022 for lack of attendance

Dogukan Gunaydin – “The University of Minnesota Student”

Dogukan Gunaydin, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, was arrested after a visa revocation by the State Dept

related to a prior criminal history for a DUI

Contrary to the mainstream media’s quick speculation that he was arrested due to his involvement in student protests, his protest activity had nothing to do with his detainment

Badar Khan Suri – “The Georgetown Foreign Exchange Student”

Suri was a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media

The media calls him a “scholar” who was innocent of any wrongdoing, even though he was married to the daughter of a senior advisor for to Hamas terrorist group

Momodou Taal – “The Cornell University Student”

Taal was unapologetic in his pro-terrorist views

Taal, a foreign student studying at Cornell University, participated in pro-Hamas protests on campus

He has a pinned post on his X profile that talks about a so-called “Zionist genocide,” and also states “Long live the student intifada!”

    Other Fake News Narratives Corrected

The Biden Administration’s inflated deportation numbers

DHS uncovered what should be a massive scandal: the Biden administration was cooking the books on ICE arrest data

They were purposefully misleading the American public by categorizing individuals processed and released into the interior of the United States as ICE arrests

Of course, the media ignored this fact

Instead, they falsely claimed that the Biden administration had carried out more arrests than the Trump administration

Tens of thousands of cases recorded as “arrests” were, in fact, instances where illegal aliens were simply processed and released into American communities

Many of these were violent criminals and gang members

The previous administration counted these as arrests even though no immigration enforcement action was taken

During fiscal year 2024, ICE made 113,431 arrests but the vast majority of those were what we call “pass-through” arrests

They are called pass-through arrests because ICE didn’t take enforcement actions against these aliens

They just passed through ICE before they were released in the U

    S

interior and told to report to an ICE office

None of the arrests made by ICE since January 20th are pass-through arrests

The difference between recent arrests and those from Biden’s last year is that, now we’re taking enforcement actions against each and every illegal alien arrested

    ICE Boston Militia rumors:

The media eagerly fed and spread a false social media rumor that an ICE agent who conducted arrests of criminal illegal aliens in New England was a “militia leader” from Arizona

The reality? He is a federal law enforcement office who has worked with ICE to help keep New England communities safe for years

This claim was not only false, but also inflammatory and places the safety of federal officers in jeopardy

Our ICE officers are facing 300% increase in assaults while carrying out enforcement operations

Due process and treatment rumors in CECOT:

These aliens HAVE had due process – we have a stringent law enforcement assessment in place that abides by due process under the U

    S

    Constitution

The reality is that prison isn’t supposed to be fun

It’s a necessary measure to protect society and punish bad guys

It is not meant to be comfortable

What’s more: prison can be avoided by self-deportation

CBP Home makes it simple and easy

If you are a criminal alien and we have to deport you, you could end up in Guantanamo Bay or CECOT

    Leave now

DOGE and ICE allegedly collecting sensitive data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

The Biden administration flooded the U

    S

with tens of millions of illegal immigrants, many of which are exploiting the American taxpayer by illegally getting Medicare and other benefits meant for law-abiding Americans

President Trump consistently promised to protect Medicare for eligible beneficiaries

To keep that promise, DOGE, CMS, and DHS are exploring an initiative to ensure that illegal aliens are not receiving these benefits not meant for them

The media claimed that ICE is working with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access sensitive personal information in order to identify illegal aliens

These claims are meant to frighten the American people, when in reality this process is working to keep them and their benefits safe from exploitation by illegal aliens

    ICE HSI presence at schools

ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) works relentlessly to protect Americans, especially children, who are put in danger by illegal alien activity

This includes investigations into potential child sex trafficking

But the media has tried to spin their investigative work into the idea that they are going to elementary schools to arrest children

HD Cooke Elementary School, Washington D

    C

At the HD Cooke Elementary School in Washington D

    C

, ICE did not conduct any enforcement action at the school

HSI agents were present at the school unrelated to any kind of enforcement action

Russel Elementary and Lillian Elementary in Los Angeles:

At two different elementary schools in Los Angeles, California, HSI officers were conducting wellness checks on children who arrived unaccompanied at the border

It had nothing to do with immigration enforcement

DHS is leading efforts to conduct welfare checks on these children to ensure that they are safe and not being exploited, abused, and sex trafficked

Unlike the previous administration, President Trump and Secretary Noem take the responsibility to protect children seriously and will continue to work with federal law enforcement to reunite children with their families

In less than 70 days, Secretary Noem and Secretary Kennedy have already reunited nearly 5,000 unaccompanied children with a relative or safe guardian

Immigrant children detained at Old McDonald Farm in New York

In early April, a raid was carried out on a dairy farm in New York after the execution of a federal criminal warrant for an illegal alien in possession of + distributing child sexual abuse materials

Upon the execution of the search warrant at Old McDonalds Farm in Sackets Harbor, New York, authorities encountered seven additional illegal aliens on the premises, including a mother and her three children

We immediately began conducting an investigation to ensure these children are not being sexually exploited

But rather than address the very real evidence of child sexual abuse, the media chose to focus on the fact that a woman and her three children were taken into custody

DHS takes its responsibility to protect children seriously and our ICE officers are working every day to remove pedophiles from American communities

TDA members being identified via tattoos

Some have claimed that DHS’ assessments of TDA and other gang memberships are based solely on the tattoos that certain illegal aliens have

DHS intelligence assessments go well beyond just gang affiliate tattoos and social media

Tren De Aragua is one of the most violent and ruthless terrorist gangs on planet earth

They rape, maim, and murder for sport

President Trump and Secretary Noem will not allow criminal gangs to terrorize American citizens

We are confident in our law enforcement’s intelligence, and we aren’t going to share intelligence reports and undermine national security every time a gang member denies he is one

    That would be insane

  • MIL-OSI USA: Dusty Days Are Here Again for El Paso

    Source: NASA

Spring and early summer are generally dusty in the Borderplex region of the Chihuahuan Desert—a transnational area that spans parts of southern New Mexico, West Texas, and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. With the region gripped by exceptional drought, this has been especially true in 2025.
The latest in a string of storms lofted particles from dried lakes and other parched sources in northern Chihuahua and New Mexico and sent them streaming toward El Paso, Juárez, and Las Cruces. The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on April 27, 2025. The event followed a large dust storm that hit the region a week earlier, as well as other major dust storms in early and mid-March.
Research indicates that March, April, and May are typically the most active months for airborne dust in El Paso. But the dust season so far this year has been “truly exceptional—one for the record books,” said Thomas Gill, an environmental scientist at the University of Texas at El Paso. For decades, Gill has used satellite observations and models to track dust activity around the planet and in the Borderplex region.
He said this latest event is the tenth “full-fledged dust storm” of the year in El Paso, meaning it was dusty enough to restrict visibility to less than half a mile. For comparison, the average is 1.8 storms per year. “You would have to go back to 1936—during the Dust Bowl—to find a year with more,” Gill said. During the Dust Bowl years of 1935 and 1936, El Paso had 13 and 11 dust storms, respectively.
Unusual drought and windy conditions are fueling the surge in dust. “We’re in the worst drought we’ve seen in at least a decade, and this March was the windiest we’ve seen in more than 50 years,” Gill added.
Research shows dust storms can pose considerable hazards. In a 2023 analysis, Gill and several colleagues pointed out that the dangers of dust are often underappreciated. They contribute to deadly traffic accidents and elevate the risk of cardiorespiratory problems that lead to emergency room visits.
Dust may also help spread a fungal infection called Valley Fever, though the precise role of dust storms remains a topic of ongoing research and debate. In another analysis, Gill and colleagues estimated that dust storms cause more than $150 billion in economic damage each year, with farmers, the health care sector, the renewable energy industry, and households bearing large costs.
Several tools powered by NASA data and satellites are available to meteorologists, scientists, and others tracking dust storms. The Worldview browser hosts timely data and imagery from several satellites, and NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office has tools for real-time weather analysis and reanalysis.
Gill collaborates frequently with a NASA-sponsored health and air quality team led by George Mason University’s Daniel Tong. That team is working to develop better ways of forecasting and analyzing how dust storms can affect air quality. Researchers with NASA’s SPoRT (Short-term Prediction Research and Transition) project have also developed a new technique that uses machine learning to improve the tracking of dust plumes at night.
“It should be interesting to see how far the dust from this event travels,” noted Santiago Gasso, a University of Maryland atmospheric scientist based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “Some of it could be headed to the Great Lakes, New England, and maybe even to Greenland, as happened after one of the storms in March.”
Up to this point in the 2025 season, the Borderplex region has seen 28 days with dust. Over the past quarter century, the average for an entire year is 22 days. “We still have several more weeks of the dust season to go,” added Gill, noting that forecasters are warning of more dust as early as this weekend.

    About the Competition
Student Launch provides relevant, cost-effective research and development of rocket propulsion systems and reflects the goals of NASA’s Artemis Program, which will establish the first long-term presence on the Moon and pave the way for eventual Mars missions.
Each year, the payload component changes to reflect current NASA missions. As Student Launch celebrates its 25th anniversary, the payload challenge will include “reports” from STEMnauts, non-living objects representing astronauts. The STEMnaut “crew” must relay real-time data to the student team’s mission control, just as the Artemis astronaut crew will do as they explore the lunar surface.
Eligible teams compete for prizes and awards and are scored in nearly a dozen categories including safety, vehicle design, social media presence, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) engagement.
Marshall’s Office of STEM Engagement hosts Student Launch to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM through real-world experiences. Student Launch is a part of the agency’s Artemis Student Challenges– a variety of activities exposing students to the knowledge and technology required to achieve the goals of the Artemis missions.

    Source: European Parliament

As stated in the Commission’s Communication ‘A Vision for Agriculture and Food Shaping together an attractive farming and agri-food sector for future generations’[1], continuous support for organic farming remains essential for the Commission.

Organic farming is a voluntary scheme[2] based on precise legal standards set in Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production and labelling of organic products[3] and its associated secondary legislation. Organic farming has been increasingly successful over the last decade as EU consumers choose to support a model that is based on ambitious environmental and animal welfare rules.

Regulation (EU) 2018/848 generally requires poultry to have access to open air areas and herbivores to have access to pastures and provides only time-limited exemptions to these requirements related in particular to weather conditions, state of the grounds or animal health diseases[4].

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Aromatic and medicinal plants from Greek producers – E-001584/2025

    Source: European Parliament

    Question for written answer  E-001584/2025
    to the Commission
    Rule 144
    Emmanouil Fragkos (ECR)

Lavender, oregano, rosemary, sage and mountain tea are among the aromatic and medicinal plants that can have great export potential due to the growing demand for an increasingly advertised – especially on social media – way of life based on natural products. They can be used for drinks, cosmetics, aromatherapy and pharmaceutical preparations, as well as in cooking.

These crops are especially advantageous for Greek farmers due to their xerophytic nature, allowing for cultivation with minimal water – an increasingly critical factor in a region facing growing water scarcity. In addition, semi-mountainous/mountainous soils are not suitable for many intensive crops, but they are ideal for plants such as oregano and mountain tea, as these are inherently organic products that do not require pesticides and fertilisers. Lavender and mountain tea have the highest export value per kilo, especially if standardised or processed (essential oils, premium packaging). Most of them can be grown organically, greatly increasing the final price. The benefit increases significantly if there is drying/standardisation or collaboration with a cooperative. Unfortunately, although there are many opportunities to enhance the value of these products, often producers throughout the province are not effectively informed of these.

What policies would the Commission recommend to the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and local government agencies to increase these Greek crops, especially those of small producers?

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Briefing – Transforming animal farming through artificial intelligence – 29-04-2025

    Source: European Parliament

By 2033, global meat protein consumption is projected to increase by 3 %, which is expected to result in higher greenhouse gas emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things have the potential to revolutionise the livestock sector by enabling farmers to increase productivity while reducing environmental impact. AI-powered systems support real-time monitoring of animal health, behaviour and welfare, allowing for the early detection of disease and stress and enabling personalised care. Precision livestock farming uses sensors, cameras and machine learning algorithms to collect and analyse data, thereby facilitating data-driven decision-making and optimised production methods. This approach can increase productivity while reducing emissions and improving animal welfare. The integration of AI in farm management has resulted in innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and efficient farming and food system. In terms of animal health, AI can predict disease outbreaks, identify potential host reservoirs and detect emerging disease threats, enabling prompt intervention and treatment. Animal welfare can also benefit from AI on farms, thanks to the early recognition of discomfort, stress or pain. However, it is essential to acknowledge the potential risks associated with AI, such as cyberattacks, accidental failures and unintentional environmental consequences. Additionally, AI decisions may prioritise efficiency, productivity and cost savings over ethical considerations, potentially leading to negative repercussions for animal welfare.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Answer to a written question – Public procurement that takes security of supply into account – E-000360/2025(ASW)

    Source: European Parliament

The Commission promotes the uptake of sustainability considerations in public procurement, including those related to the environmental and social impact of the services and products purchased by public buyers, in line with current EU public procurement rules.

It does so through guidance, capacity building initiatives[1], supporting Member State Joint Actions[2] and the EU green public procurement criteria, including specific criteria for the food and catering sector[3].

The Commission is also preparing criteria that could help contracting authorities to introduce, on a voluntary basis, sustainability aspects in the food and catering services that they are buying.

The Political Guidelines 2024-2029[4] announced a revision of the 2014 EU public procurement Directives[5]. At the moment the Commission is carrying out an evaluation of these Directives[6] to assess whether EU public procurement rules work as intended. Once the evaluation is completed the Commission will consider concrete measures and options to shape the new proposal.

It will notably seek to further support ‘best value’ purchases, to reward quality and sustainability as set forward in Vision for Agriculture and Food[7].

Dario Nardella (S&D), Stefano Bonaccini (S&D), André Rodrigues (S&D), Maria Grapini (S&D), Camilla Laureti (S&D), Marko Vešligaj (S&D), Christophe Clergeau (S&D), Eric Sargiacomo (S&D)

The Commission communication entitled ‘A Vision for Agriculture and Food’ (COM(2025)0075) outlines the areas to be worked on to achieve an attractive, competitive and resilient agricultural and food sector for future generations. In particular, public support through the CAP remains crucial to sustain and stabilise farmers’ incomes.

In its communication entitled ‘The road to the next multiannual financial framework’ (COM(2025)0046), the Commission introduces the notion of ‘one plan per country’, alluding to a single fund managed at national level, which would be a major blow to the commonality of key EU policies, and would also have an impact on food security and food sovereignty.

Can the Commission answer the following questions:

    • 1.How does it plan to fund the objectives outlined in the vision, while avoiding reductions in CAP resources and addressing the impact of inflation?
    • 2.Does it stand by the proposal for a ‘single fund’ that would merge financing from key policies such as the CAP and cohesion policy, despite concerns about the potential dilution of their specific objectives and priorities?
    • 3.How does it intend to safeguard Parliament’s role in shaping the future multiannual financial framework, to ensure that the Union’s actions fully reflect the needs and expectations of its citizens and territories?

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: To streamline regulatory framework governing Sugar Sector, Centre formulates Sugar (Control) Order, 2025

    Source: Government of India

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 1:41PM by PIB Delhi

The Government of India has undertaken a comprehensive review of the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966, leading to the formulation of the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025. This revision aims to simplify and streamline the regulatory framework governing the sugar sector in line with current industry dynamics and technological advancements.

The Objective of the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025 is a step toward building a more efficient, transparent, and accountable sugar ecosystem, fostering both domestic stability and global competitiveness.

Some Key Highlights of the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025 are:

    • API integration of DFPD portal with sugar mills Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)/ Systems, Applications, and Products (SAPAs):- Clause related to information sharing in the digital forms through Application Programing Interface or any other mode with Government Organization has been added. The integration of systems will enhance efficiency; provide real time data, reduce data leakages and redundancies. The process is already going on and more than 450 sugar mills are already integrated with the portal. Further, GSTN data related to sale of sugar by sugar mills is also integrated with the portal.
    • Inclusion of clause related to regulation of price of sugar:- Currently various provisions related to regulation of price of sugar have been mentioned in the Sugar Price (Control) Order, 2018. Now clause related to Sugar Price (Control) has been incorporated in the sugar control order, hence there will be no separate Sugar Price (Control) Order.
    • Inclusion of raw sugar: – We will meet international standards by adding raw sugar in control order. Raw sugar will be considered in the total stock of sugar across the country; therefore, the figures of actual stock will be available. Currently, raw sugar is being sold by the name of khandsari/Organic; therefore, the change shall put a stop to misleading names of this product.
    • Inclusion of khandsari sugar and khandsari sugar factory:- A substantial amount of khandsari sugar is being produced by many such units; therefore, khandsari units having crushing capacity more than 500 TCD has been included in the Sugar Control Order, 2025. Inclusion will ensure payment of FRP to the farmers by Khandsari sugar factories & will help in the accurate estimation of sugar production. A total of 373 No. of khandsari units (with total capacity of about 95000 TCD) are working in the country. Out of which, 66 (with total capacity of about 55200 TCD) are more than 500 TCD.
    • Inclusion of various by-products:- Different kinds of by-products namely cane bagasse, cane molasses, press mud cake or any other alternative product including ethanol (produced from cane molasses, sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, sugar) affecting sugar production from sugarcane included in the order. Government will be able to regulate the diversion of sugar to ensure sufficient availability of sugar for domestic consumption.
    • Inclusion of various definitions:-Various definitions included in the order namely Sugar, Plantation White Sugar, Refined Sugar, Khandsari Sugar, Gur or Jaggery, Bura Sugar, Cube Sugar, Icing Sugar taken from Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI), which will ensure the uniformity in definition of various products.

    Wheat procurement surpasses 250 LMT

21.03 lakh farmers receive MSP of Rs. 62155.96 crores during RMS 2025-26

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 1:40PM by PIB Delhi

Procurement of Wheat during RMS 2025-26 is going on smoothly in the major procuring States across the country. Against an estimated target of 312 LMT fixed for procurement of wheat during RMS 2025-26, 256.31 LMT of wheat has already been procured so far, in Central Pool.   The quantity of wheat procured till 30th April this year has already surpassed last year’s total procurement of 205.41 LMT on the same date, showing an increase of 24.78 %.  All the 5 major wheat procuring states Viz. Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have procured more wheat this year compared to last year.

A total of 21.03 lakh farmers have already been benefitted during RMS 2025-26 with total MSP outflow to the tune of Rs. 62155.96 crores. Major contribution in the procurement came from five procuring states Viz. Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with procurement of 103.89 LMT, 65.67 LMT, 67.57 LMT, 11.44 LMT and 7.55 LMT respectively.

With sufficient duration of procurement period still left in RMS 2025-26, country is well on course to surpass last year’s figures of wheat procurement for the Central Pool by a substantial margin.

The positive outcome in terms of quantity of wheat procurement this year has been a result of concerted efforts by Department of Food and Public Distribution, starting from preparing State specific Action Plans based on learnings from previous years which were shared with the states well in advance. The Actionable items like awareness generation amongst farmers; Registration of farmers; Readiness of Procurement Centres; Timely payment of MSP to farmers etc were followed up with the respective states on regular basis through review meetings so that any potential bottlenecks are addressed timely. In most of the cases, payment of MSP was made to farmers within 24 to 48 hours.

Measures taken by Department of Food and Public Distribution, also include mandating stockholding limits through the wheat stock portal, according timely approvals for relaxation FAQ Norms, field visit by officers to identified districts for accessing on the ground scenario to facilitate timely action as and when required.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Three scientists speak about what it’s like to have research funding cut by the Trump administration

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Gemma Ware, Host, The Conversation Weekly Podcast, The Conversation

The Trump administration’s cuts to funding for American universities and research have left many scientists reeling and very worried. At the National Institutes of Health, which has an annual budget of US$47 billion to support medical research both in the U.S. and around the world, nearly 800 grants have been terminated. The administration is considering cutting the overall budget of the NIH by 40%.

In this episode of The Conversation Weekly podcast, we speak to three scientists, two in the U.S. and one in South Africa, about what it’s like to be a scientist whose funding has been cut by the Trump administration.

Sunghee Lee was in a meeting when she received an email to say that her $5 million, five-year grant from the NIH had been terminated. It was March 21, and Lee, a research professor at the University of Michigan, was stunned.

“ It was very short and opaque, which is very different than how NIH usually operates”, she said. Lee’s project, which started in 2024, looked at different risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease across racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. The termination email cited diversity, equity and inclusion studies, an early target of the Trump administration’s cuts to federal research funding, which it said no longer “effectuates agency priorities.”

Lee was confused. “ Our study looks at everybody,” she said. “So if looking at everybody is a DEI study, just about any data collection in this country should be classified as DEI studies and terminated.”

    An arduous application process

A few weeks earlier, Brady West, a colleague of Lee’s at the University of Michigan, had received similar news. West’s access to a federal research data center, a secure room to access restricted personal data, was withdrawn. He was told that one of his NIH-funded projects, which looked at measuring health disparities between people of different sexual identities, was no longer in compliance with recent executive orders. “Fortunately for me,” he said, “I was nearing the end of this project.”

West explains that it can take up to two years for researchers to win a grant from a federal funding agency like the NIH. That money then supports a whole team of people, including researchers and administrators. All grant applications are reviewed by a panel of experts from the field who judge whether it’s novel, important research.

”A big misconception is that an administration chooses to fund these grants based on what they believe are important topics to research,“ West said. “That’s not the case.”

    HIV vaccine research

The vast majority of NIH funding goes to institutions and researchers in the U.S., but a recent analysis by the journal Nature found 811 grants to international teams in more than 60 countries worth more than $340 million.

In South Africa, where tensions are running high with the new Trump administration over land reform and other diplomatic fault lines, scientists have had NIH-funded research grants suspended.

Glenda Gray is a professor at the infectious disease and oncology research institute at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and chief scientific officer at South Africa’s Medical Research Council. She’s at the forefront of research efforts to find a vaccine for HIV, work supported largely by grants from the NIH and aid from the United States Agency for International Development.

In January, a $46 million project funded by USAID on experimental HIV vaccines that Gray ran was terminated after the Trump administration dismantled the aid agency. Then in mid-April, she saw that funding for a clinical trial unit in Soweto involved in trials for HIV vaccines had been marked as “pending.” On top of that,  four global research networks on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment strategies that the Soweto unit was affiliated with were told by NIH that they could no longer spend any money in South Africa.

Gray says the level of funding, which was won in a competitive, global process, is “irreplacable” and will have drastic impact on HIV research.

“ Basically you lose the knowledge or the value of understanding HIV prevention, HIV vaccines or therapeutics. We have the infrastructure, we have the burden of disease, and we have the ability to answer these questions,” Gray said. “And so it’s going to take much longer to answer these questions than if you had South Africa there. Basically, we slow down HIV vaccine research … you slow down the process of knowledge generation.”

Listen to Sunghee Lee, Brady West and Glenda Gray talk about their experiences and what it means for their research on The Conversation Weekly podcast. It also includes an introduction with Alla Katsnelson, associate health editor at The Conversation in the U.S.

This episode of The Conversation Weekly was written and produced by Gemma Ware and Katie Flood. Mixing and sound design by Eloise Stevens and theme music by Neeta Sarl.

Newsclips in this episode from CBS News, Firstpost, ABC 7 Chicago, ABC News, CNN and PBS NewsHour.

Brady Thomas West has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and National Science Foundation. Sunghee Lee has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Justice. Glenda Gray has received funding from USAID co-operative agreement for HIV vaccine research and US-NIH funding for HIV vaccines.
