    The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the Ministerial Level is holding its 54th Ordinary Session today,18th of June 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.

    During the meeting, Ministers will consider the report of the 42nd Session of the MSC at the Ambassadorial Level, along with memoranda on the political, security, and humanitarian situations in the Region. Key updates will include the transition process in the Republic of Guinea, negotiations with Burkina Faso, Republics of Mali, and Niger, as well as maritime security, counterterrorism and organised crime, among other pressing matters.

    In his welcome address, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, highlighted that the 54th Ordinary Session of MSC convenes at a defining moment as ECOWAS marks its 50th anniversary. President Touray commended Member States for their unwavering commitment to peace, security and regional stability, noting that despite persistent challenges, the Community remains resilient and unified.

    He emphasised the Council’s enduring contribution to maintaining security over the past 25 years and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening the regional peace and security architecture, improving communication to counter misinformation, and preserving the achievements of the Community amidst growing geopolitical complexities.

    “For over 25 years, the Mediation and Security Council has contributed immensely to the security and stability of our region, through its numerous sessions. Therefore, in celebrating the Golden Jubilee, we must recognise the contribution of this august body to the Community,” President Touray added.

    H.E. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial Level, welcomed delegates to Abuja and acknowledged their continued dedication to strengthening peace, security, and democratic governance in West Africa. He outlined the Council’s focus on key regional priorities, including political transitions, upcoming elections, maritime security, terrorism, organised crime and financial transparency.

    Ambassador Tuggar also highlighted progress on the Early Warning and Response Centres, the launch of the Regional Partnership for Democracy, and the completion of the Lungi Military Logistics Depot, a milestone in operationalising the ECOWAS Standby Force.

    He further underscored the need for collective ownership of regional initiatives and cautioned against restrictive policies that could hinder trade and investment opportunities vital to the region’s prosperity.

    “In these challenging times, our ability to come together to consult, collaborate and take decisive action remains vital to advancing peace, security and good governance across our region,” he added.

    A report will be adopted by the Ministers at the end of the MSC Session and presented to the Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, scheduled to take place in Abuja from the 19th to 20th of June 2025.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: King Mswati III of Eswatini in Ghana for a State Visit next week

    The Presidency has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will host His Majesty King Mswati III, Ingwenyama of the Kingdom of Eswatini, for a state visit to Ghana next week. The visit is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 June to Saturday, 28 June 2025, spanning four days of official engagements.

    King Mswati III is expected to arrive in Accra on Tuesday, 24th June. Upon his arrival, he will be welcomed at the Presidency for bilateral discussions with President Mahama and a high-level Ghanaian delegation. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries is anticipated to be signed during this meeting.

    On Tuesday afternoon, the King is scheduled to meet with officials at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra before departing for Kumasi later in the day.

    In Kumasi, His Majesty will be the distinguished guest of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The itinerary in the Asante capital includes official visits to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and a tour of the historic Manhyia Palace Museum. King Mswati III is also scheduled to address the National House of Chiefs and attend a grand durbar of chiefs organised in his honour at Manhyia Palace.

    A Royal Banquet will be held in Kumasi on Friday evening. On Saturday, the final day of the visit, King Mswati III will join the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at a ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) before departing from Ghana.

    King Mswati III’s visit is expected to significantly strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and the Kingdom of Eswatini and deepen the historical and cultural links between the Asante Kingdom and the southern African nation.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Community leaders call on United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to support demilitarization of Tripoli

    Deputy Special Representative for the Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Aeneas Chuma chaired a meeting with the Tripoli Center Outreach Committee Monday to discuss de-escalation efforts in Tripoli. These leaders, who has contributed to brokering and sustaining the truce since the May crisis, have been pivotal in preventing violence through community engagement. The Mission has facilitated targeted mediation meetings to reinforce their peacebuilding capacities, encourage coordination with official security institutions, and amplify local ownership in sustaining stability.

    During the same week, UNSMIL’s SIS met with notables and community leaders from across the western region as part of ongoing efforts to support local peacebuilding. The meeting followed up on previous engagements and recognized their critical role in sustaining the truce. Participants discussed ways to further contribute to the implementation of local security arrangements and enhance coordination with official institutions. UNSMIL reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive dialogue and community-driven stabilization. “UNSMIL and IC need to urge all parties to refrain from provocative speech and actions,” one of the notables said. 

    During the meetings, the leaders shared their efforts and presented recommendations for peace initiatives. Participants stressed the need for a disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration program, warning of the risks of military presence in residential areas. “We share the demands of Tripoli’s people and aim to demilitarize the capital,” stated the participants. UNSMIL expressed its intention to increase collaboration and ensure that local voices continue to shape both local and national peace processes.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: “Don’t Lose This Golden Chance”- President Museveni Advises Ugandans on the Parish Development Model (PDM)

    He said he began the fight against poverty in the 1960s and he has been able to come up with various poverty alleviation programs to ensure that his dream is realized.

    “Don’t lose this chance because it’s a big support to you. Wako, who was poor, is now a rich man. He is blessed now with three cows and a milling machine because his family embraced the PDM program. I know that we are all not equal but when you embrace the PDM program you will eradicate poverty in your households,” he said.

    President Museveni made the remarks today during his PDM assessment tour at Mr. Muwereza Wako ‘s farm situated at Buyego cell, Buvuma sub-county in Buvuma district.

    Mr. Wako, a PDM beneficiary, owns three cows and a milling machine.

    The President, who was pleased to visit Mr. Wako’s farm, said that the government has for years been sending resources to the public to curb poverty but in one way or the other some government officials have been mismanaging it.

    President Museveni however narrated that the government now gives each parish Shs.100m annually and in his next five years’ term in office, each parish will have received Shs.500m.

    He revealed that the first batch which received Shs.1m PDM money each, two years back will return it to their parishes with an interest of Shs.120,000, to give chance to other adults to benefit.

    The President supported Mr. Wako with Shs.12m to purchase an acre of land at Shs.10m and use the Shs.2m to buy livestock like goats and pigs.

    In response, Mr. Wako commended the President for initiating the PDM program that has enabled a section of Ugandans to improve their standard of living through wealth creation. He asserted that he was so poor to an extent that he couldn’t afford food for his family but currently he is called a rich man.

    Mr. Wako and his wife Mirembe Eseza together with their eight children live on half an acre of land and according to the farmer, the PDM money has enabled him to add value to his family through wealth creation.

    He said on 21st June 2023, he received Shs. 1 million PDM cash and after the bank charges, he remained with Shs. 980,000.

    Mr. Wako noted that using the PDM money, he added some of his savings to buy a bull and a cow which conceived and gave birth to a calf in May 2024.

    During the same month, he sold a bull at Shs.1m and used it to purchase an old milling machine at Shs.2.5m.  

    Mr. Wako explained that the machine seller allowed him to clear his remaining balance of Shs.1.5m in installments. He asserted that he started using the machine which fetched him money to clear the balance.

    The PDM beneficiary revealed that the milling machine earns him Shs. 15,000 every day, after deducting Shs. 5,000 for fuel, thus remaining with Shs. 10,000 and he earns a total of 300,000 per month. The dairy cow gives him 3 litres of milk. He sells two litres at Shs.1000 each and earns a total of Shs. 60,000 per month. The cow dung and urine is used as fertilizers in his garden.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Case Backlog at Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Contributing to Lack of Consequences within South African Police Service (SAPS)

    The Portfolio Committee on Police is concerned that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) continues to face a huge case backlog, which negatively impacts on its ability to deliver on its mandate. The committee met with both IPID and the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) on the revised annual performance plan and strategic plan.

    “IPID plays a critical role in ensuring accountability from the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the backlog directly undermines this drive. While the committee has noted various interventions to clear the backlog, the reality is that victims of police abuse of authority remain without recourse,” said Mr Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of the committee. The committee is concerned that there is a backlog of 14 469 cases carried over to this financial year and has called for urgent strategies to remedy the concern.

    While the committee welcomes the R126.3 million additional funding over the medium term and is hopeful that it will significantly contribute to reducing the case backlog, it is concerned that the additional allocation without clear plans to overcome some of the internal systematic challenges will not resolve the problem. A major impediment for the IPID is the proportionally high case per investigator ratio, and the nominal increase of employees from 387 in the 2025/26 financial year to 421 in the 2027/28 financial year will not adequately resolve the challenge.

    In the context of the increasing cases reported to IPID, it is necessary to ensure that the directorate is adequately capacitated to increasing demand.

    Meanwhile, the committee acknowledged IPID’s intentions to implement a new digital case management system that will enable the entity to monitor cases and ensure better tracking and communication with victims. Notwithstanding the plan, the committee has urged IPID to effectively implement the plan, as a functional system might have a positive impact on the case backlog.

    The committee also welcomes the establishment of the internal investigation, Forensic Services, quality assurance and research units. The committee is of the view that the envisioned capacity will ensure that IPID will have the skills set it needs to investigate complex reported corruption cases.

    The implementation of the recommendations made by IPID to SAPS is also a point of concern for the committee. The meeting today highlighted a concerning trend of SAPS seemingly ignoring strong recommendations made by IPID. “This phenomenon erodes the effectiveness of IPID and its mandate and the committee resolved that there is a need for a laser focus on the rate of implementation of the recommendations,” Mr Cameron said.

    Meanwhile, the committee agreed with the Minister of Police that there must be a general improvement in the conduct of SAPS members. “The bottom line is that there is no place in the SAPS for rogue police officers who engage in criminal activity. While the IPID provides the necessary checks and balances, the SAPS members must always be fit and proper for the service they must render to the people,” Mr Cameron emphasised.

    With regard to PSiRA, the committee has acknowledged the intention to implement a digital strategy that will ensure a seamless interaction process with users. Of major importance is functionality, such as verifying the training of private security officers through the digital platform.

    The committee also welcomes the intention to increase PSiRA’s footprint to ensure that private security companies in Limpopo, Northern Cape, North West are able to access its services more easily. Also, the intention to increase monitoring operations will be critical in ensuring that private security companies are legally registered and compliant with legal prescripts. The committee has always emphasised the importance of the private security industry in efforts to combat crime in the country.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Employment and Labour Committee Welcomes Presentations on 2025-2030 Strategic Plans for Department and Entities

    The Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour has welcomed presentations on the 2025-2030 strategic plans, 2025/26 annual performance plans and budget estimates of the Department of Employment and Labour, Supported Employment Enterprises (SEE), Productivity South Africa (PSA), the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC).

    The committee is of the view that more resources are needed to adequately fund the department and its entities. More resources are needed to increase the department’s inspection and enforcement capacity, to fund SEE’s procurement initiatives and the employment of persons living with disabilities in line with United Nations’ conventions, to address the CCMA’s case backlog, and to fund NEDLAC’s mandate of facilitating national dialogue, among other things.

    The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Boyce Maneli, said that the contribution of SEE, CCMA and NEDLAC to the country’s economic growth cannot be overstated. “An inclusive growth of the economy requires that there be a harmonious work environment, and the CCMA is best placed as an arbiter. Greater participation of everyone in the economy [is also required], including persons living with disabilities, and SEE is best placed to facilitate that aspect; and continuous facilitation of national dialogue, which is a mandate of NEDLAC,” said Mr Maneli.

    To this end, the committee has called on the department to provide in writing the various creative measures that will be implemented to cover budget shortfalls.

    Mr Maneli said that while legislative review may be needed to motivate budget increases for some aspects, the committee will work within the current legislative framework around budget process to get possible increases through the Money Bills Amendment Procedure and Related Matters process in future financial years.

    Igor Jesus scored the winning goal as reigning South American champions Botafogo stunned newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in FIFA Club World Cup Group B on Thursday.

    Paris Saint-Germain, one of the favorites in the 32-team tournament, had cruised past Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the first round last Sunday, while Botafogo defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-1.

    Jesus netted a solo goal in the 36th minute, capitalizing on a deflection off a defender. The Brazilian club then held firm through a wave of second-half attacks from the French powerhouse, handing Paris Saint-Germain its first loss since May 3.

    Paris Saint-Germain registered 16 shots but only two on target, while all four of Botafogo’s attempts were on goal.

    “A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is,” Jesus said. “It was a difficult game, and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal.

    “We’re really happy. We knew how important this game was. One team was the champion of the Champions League, the other team was the champion of South America,” added Jesus.

    Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique said it’s normal for any team to lose matches in a world-level tournament. “This competition is very intense and difficult. Every team is motivated, especially against our team. I sometimes think our team struggled against their defense. I think Botafogo is one of the toughest defensive teams in the tournament.”

    Botafogo now leads the group with six points, three ahead of both Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid. All four teams, including the Sounders, who have lost both matches, remain in contention for a spot in the knockout stage.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: NSU students discover new ways to advance atopic dermatitis treatment

    On June 17, the educational Sprint “Medical Marketing” was completed at Novosibirsk State University. It was organized jointly with the international cosmetics company Bioderma as part of the project

    In less than two months, participants went from ideas to solutions that will soon be tested by the project’s marketing team.

    There were about 50 participants at the start, 9 teams reached the final. And the main prize is an internship in Moscow!

    What did the participants propose?

    The Sprint finalists presented completely different, but equally inspiring approaches to solving medical marketing problems. All projects were focused on the real demand of Bioderma and the problems faced by patients with atopic dermatitis.

    The Telegram bot for patient navigation was created by the winners of the Medical Marketing Sprint, Ksenia Vasilyeva and Ekaterina Butikova. The bot helps patients navigate information, receive content selections and important reminders.

    Ksenia Vasilyeva:

    — For me, it was a love story at first sight. I am a resident in dermatovenereology, and the topic of atopic dermatitis is something I encounter very often during my training and doctor’s appointments. When I saw that the project was being done by Bioderma, I didn’t even have to think: I had already attended their lectures for doctors — always deep and caring. And, to be honest, I sincerely love this brand, I use their products myself. Therefore, participating in such a project became something very personal — I wanted to be part of an initiative that really helps people.

    I entered the project with great interest and no less doubts. I understood that it would be cool, because it was a collaboration between NSU and Bioderma, but I was worried that I might not have enough knowledge. I had never done marketing, and technical stuff seemed completely out of my league. But the sprint changed everything: we learned right on the spot, there were so many cool lectures — on medical marketing, on tools, and even on the technical side. And most importantly, there was incredible support from the curators. They didn’t just teach us — they guided us, inspired us, and instilled confidence in us.

    Ekaterina Butikova:

    — The most difficult part was to understand the technical part, because my education is in a different field. But with the help of modern tools, trial and error, we managed and reached the final product.

    Now I understand that you can figure out and do almost everything with due persistence and desire. This experience showed how important it is to be in the trend of new technologies.

    The finalists developed working solutions: from an ML model predicting the likelihood of purchasing a product to Telegram bots for interacting with consumers and keeping an AD (atopic dermatitis) diary.

    — The Medical Marketing Hackathon is a successful experiment in “landing” and working through the tasks of a specific company by students and young professionals. As a result, the participants gained invaluable experience and direct contacts with business representatives, and the company watched the teams in action; the results of the work will soon be tested by their marketing department.

    The company expressed an active desire to continue interacting with student teams not only within the framework of this event, but also through other products of the NSU Startup Studio, such as the .Catalyst accelerator and the Sandbox internship program within the university, said Alexey Starostin, Director of the NSU Startup Studio.

    All teams interviewed patients and collected feedback, obtaining data that could be interesting and useful to the medical community. Irina Gennadyevna Sergeeva, MD, Professor of the Department of Fundamental Medicine at NSU, noted that the works on the topics “Criteria for the selection of emollients in the complex therapy of AD” (authors – Anastasia Bibikova, Maria Darovskikh), “Analysis of reviews and feedback” (Daria Boyarova, Anastasia Korotchenko), “Analysis of engagement in chats and Telegram channels” (Serafima Zolotova, Alina Nikolaeva) deserve publication in scientific journals and can be presented in Scopus.

    Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 18:00hrs on Friday, 13 June to a report of an unresponsive woman at her home in Mornington Place, Camden.

    Officers attended and found a woman with stab injuries. She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

    She was identified as 69-year-old Jennifer Abbott.

    Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

    The weather has turned pleasant across Delhi-NCR as drop in both minimum and maximum temperature has brought relief to the people from the scorching heat.

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next five days, forecasting rain and strong winds across the region.

    On June 20, the maximum temperature is not likely to exceed 36 degrees Celsius, and the minimum is 27 degrees Celsius.

    On June 21, the temperature is expected to hover around 37 degrees C (max) and 28 degrees C (min), with humidity between 80 per cent and 82 per cent.

    According to the IMD, light to moderate rain, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, is expected during the evenings and nights of June 20 and 21.

    Between June 22 and 25, the region is likely to witness cloudy skies, moderate to heavy rain, and thunderstorms, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h. During this period, the maximum temperature may drop further to 35 degrees Celsius and the minimum to 26-27 degrees C. The weather department said humidity could climb up to 90 per cent, keeping the atmosphere sticky.

    However, the continuous showers have led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Gurugram, Noida, and East Delhi, disrupting movement. Roads remain submerged at some places, prompting the local administrations to deploy teams for drainage work.

    June 26 is expected to bring clear skies, with no weather warnings issued. The IMD has forecast partly cloudy conditions, offering respite from the persistent rain.

    Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary, especially during thunderstorms, and to avoid waterlogged routes.

    The traffic police have also issued advisories to ensure safer commuting during this wet spell.

    Delhi’s air quality has also shown marked improvement, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) slipping into the ‘satisfactory’ category on Thursday after remaining ‘poor’ for several days.

    According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI was recorded at 76 at 8 a.m. on June 20, compared to 99 a day earlier.

    June 26 is expected to bring clear skies, with no weather warnings issued. The IMD has forecast partly cloudy conditions, offering respite from the persistent rain.

    Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary, especially during thunderstorms, and to avoid waterlogged routes.

    The traffic police have also issued advisories to ensure safer commuting during this wet spell.

    Delhi’s air quality has also shown marked improvement, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) slipping into the ‘satisfactory’ category on Thursday after remaining ‘poor’ for several days.

    According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI was recorded at 76 at 8 a.m. on June 20, compared to 99 a day earlier.

    Launched on April 29, the latest season of the innovation contest is spreading across India through a series of design thinking workshops and Open Houses—reaching not just major metros but also the vibrant heartlands of the Northeast. The programme encourages youth to identify real-world issues in their communities and develop meaningful tech-based solutions.
     
    This year, the programme will offer INR 1 crore to the top four winning teams, along with opportunities for hands-on prototyping, expert mentorship from Samsung leaders and IIT Delhi faculty, and valuable investor connects—giving young minds the support they need to bring their ideas to life.
     
    In Bengaluru, more than 3,000 students from five leading schools and colleges came together this month to dream big, think bold and build solutions for India’s future. As part of the programme’s roadshows and open houses, classrooms were transformed into buzzing hubs of ideas and inspiration.
     
    From medical colleges to high schools, the message was clear: young Indians are ready to step up and solve real-world problems—armed with empathy, technology and a passion to bring meaningful change.
     
    At Dr Chandramma Dayananda Sagar Institute of Medical Education and Research, students gathered to explore how health and innovation intersect. For Ritwika, the experience was transformative.
    “The workshop helped me understand how to really think—not just of ideas, but of how to plan and build them. I’ve always been bothered by how we manage waste around us. Now, with Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, I want to work on better waste segregation systems. It made me realise that we’re not just students—we can be problem solvers.”
     
    Similar energy echoed through Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, where Rudra left the workshop thinking not just as a medical student, but as a changemaker.
     
    “I finally understood what design thinking really means,” he said. “It’s not just a process—it’s a mindset. I want to work on ideas around energy conservation that help society at large. This programme gave me the clarity I needed to start.”
     
    The spark wasn’t limited to colleges alone. In schools like National Centre for Excellence, Sandeepani School, and AECS School, younger students were just as fired up to bring change.
     
    Deeksha, a student passionate about the environment, found her path through technology.
     
    “I used to think solving environmental problems needed years of research. But this workshop taught me to first define the problem clearly—and then start thinking of practical solutions. With Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, I want to build tech-based solutions for sustainability. There’s so much scope here—and I believe I can make a difference.”
     
    The programme is not just about problem-solving—it is also about planting the seeds of entrepreneurship. For Anish, the workshop became the launchpad for a bigger dream.

    At Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, the energy in the room was palpable. Chestha, an engineering student with a passion for rural development, walked in with a question and walked out with a mission.
     
    “I’ve always wondered why farmers still struggle with outdated irrigation systems,” she said. “This workshop helped me think through the problem and sketch out a low-cost, AI-based solution for real-time soil and water monitoring. I now believe it’s actually doable—and Samsung Solve for Tomorrow has given me the tools to begin.”
     
    Over in Guru Kashi University, Talwandi, Vatsal found a different calling.
     
    “I’ve been interested in the mental health crisis, especially among teenagers in smaller towns. The workshop helped me design a tech-enabled peer support platform focused on accessibility and anonymity. It feels good to know that ideas like these can get real support. For the first time, I feel like I can make something that truly matters.”
     
    In Patiala’s DAV Public School, the spirit of problem-solving had taken over. Astha, a Class 11 student with an eye for social impact, was brimming with purpose.
     
    “I want to address the lack of menstrual hygiene awareness in rural schools. During the workshop, I mapped out an idea for a mobile app and a local ambassador network. It’s a small step, but it could mean the world to someone. Solve for Tomorrow made me believe that even at 16, I can start something.”
     
    Meanwhile, in Gurugram’s HDFC School, the air was thick with big ideas and bigger ambitions. Rishika, a student driven by climate action, left the session inspired.
     
    “I’ve been worried about the carbon footprint of everyday transportation,” she shared. “This workshop gave me the confidence to explore green mobility solutions—like creating an app that promotes micro-mobility options in school campuses and societies. It’s early, but I’ve started thinking like a designer, a problem-solver.”
     
    The movement didn’t stop there. From BCM Arya Model School in Ludhiana to Guru Teg Bahadur Public School in Bardwal (Dhuri), and KR Mangalam in Gurugram, every workshop was filled with passionate young voices.   • MIL-OSI United Nations: IOM Sounds Alarm Over Suspension of Life-Saving Transport in South Sudan

    Geneva/Juba, 20 June 2025 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is deeply alarmed by the suspension of its life-saving transport services for thousands of displaced people in South Sudan due to critical funding shortfalls. With humanitarian needs on the rise and more people fleeing violence in neighbouring Sudan, IOM is urgently appealing for USD 6.5 million to resume this vital support and prevent vulnerable people from being left stranded.

    “The people arriving in South Sudan have already endured unimaginable trauma – conflict, displacement, and profound loss,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “It is unconscionable that, after surviving so much, they are now left stranded at the border without the means to reach safety or rebuild their lives. We cannot allow financial constraints to determine whether people live with dignity or languish in desperation. The time to act is now. This lifeline must be restored – urgently.”

    Onward transport assistance (OTA) is a critical lifeline for those undertaking long and dangerous journeys as a result of the war in Sudan. It allows people to move safely and with dignity from border entry points to their destinations of choice within South Sudan, where they can reconnect with their families, find protection, and access services and opportunities for recovery.

    Following the depletion of available funding, OTA operations were drastically reduced and temporarily suspended on 1 June 2025. This suspension has put further strain on host communities, increased the risk of tensions and disease outbreaks, and limited access to already scarce resources such as water, health services, land, and livelihoods. Currently, only one bus and one truck are departing daily from the Joda border to Renk – far below what is needed to meet the scale of the emergency.

    IOM operates OTA through a multi-modal transport network, using barges, buses, and aircraft, depending on the security and accessibility of specific routes. Travel from border areas like Renk to destinations such as Wau, Juba, or Bentiu can take more than five days.

    Since May 2023, IOM has supported over 570,000 new arrivals in South Sudan with transportation from entry points to transit centers, and more than 250,000 people to their final destination. The need for this service is now greater than ever as people continue to flee Sudan’s warzone and arrive in South Sudan’s fragile northern regions.

    As the crisis continues, population movements are shifting, with new waves of arrivals from other areas placing additional strain on already overstretched border communities and services. These new arrivals are compounding South Sudan’s already dire humanitarian crisis, marked by years of conflict, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks.

    Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, nearly 1.2 million people have crossed into South Sudan, which continues to maintain an open-door policy for those fleeing violence. Of these arrivals, 32 per cent have been identified as Sudanese refugees and 68 per cent are South Sudanese returnees.

    Thousands continue to cross into South Sudan each week. However, since April 2025, approximately 85,000 people have crossed from South Sudan into Sudan. This includes South Sudanese refugees and Sudanese nationals returning home, primarily due to insecurity and the lack of essential services in South Sudan.

    Many of those arriving at border areas like Renk are exhausted, malnourished, and without the financial or physical means to continue their journeys. They face urgent medical needs or serious protection risks, including unaccompanied or separated children, older people, persons with disabilities, and those requiring referral to specialized care.

    With 125,000 new arrivals expected between July and the end of the year and 43,000 people in urgent need of transport assistance, IOM warns that the crisis will only deepen in the absence of immediate funding. IOM calls on donors and partners to urgently step in and restore this critical service, ensuring safe, dignified onward movement for those fleeing conflict and seeking protection in South Sudan.

At the centre of this invisible but essential ecosystem is the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), which turned 20 on Thursday.

    Set up in 2003 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), NIXI has played a key role in ensuring that India’s internet remains local in routing, robust in performance, and ready for future demands. It currently operates 77 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across the country, which help domestic traffic stay within India’s borders — reducing latency, increasing speed, and enhancing security.

    A resilient internet, a resilient India

    In a statement marking the occasion, NIXI CEO Dr Devesh Tyagi said, “A resilient internet is the foundation of a resilient India. As we celebrate NIXI Day, we renew our commitment to making the internet faster, safer, and more inclusive.”

    The importance of the organisation came into sharp focus during the COVID-19 lockdowns. With physical movement restricted, internet traffic surged.     Gujarat will mark the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21 with a state-level event in Vadnagar, the hometown of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The main celebration will take place at Sarmishta Lake, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Health Minister Rishikesh Patel, and Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi expected to attend.

    Prime Minister will lead the national event from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. More than 1.5 crore people are expected to participate across over 60,000 locations in the state.

    Yoga sessions will be held in 45,000 primary schools, 12,500 secondary schools, 2,600 colleges and three universities, involving around 5.73 lakh students and teachers. Events are also planned across 18,226 gram panchayats, 251 taluka panchayats, and all 33 district police headquarters.

    The state government has extended the campaign to 287 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), 1,477 Primary Health Centres (PHCs), 6,500 wellness centres, 30 prisons and 1,152 police stations. Mass yoga sessions are also scheduled at 100 Amrit Sarovar lakes.

    In the run-up to the event, yoga and ‘surya namaskar’ sessions were held at 11 locations in Vadnagar, including Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Tana-Riri Garden, Kirti Toran, the Vadnagar Museum, and the local railway station. Additionally, over 35 large-scale yoga events — each with more than 1,000 participants — were organised in Junagadh, Porbandar, Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

    Last year, Gujarat recorded the highest participation in the country with 1.31 crore people taking part in Yoga Day activities.

         The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau, arrived in Bordeaux on June 19 (France time) to continue his visit to France.
     
         Mr Yau first held a business roundtable with representatives of La French Tech Bordeaux, a start-up network, and Bordeaux-based technology start-ups to update them on Hong Kong’s latest start-up ecosystem and business-friendly environment for start-ups and entrepreneurs to thrive.
     
         Mr Yau highlighted that Hong Kong’s start-up community has seen remarkable growth and diversification in recent years. In 2024, the number of start-ups in the city reached a record high of approximately 4 700, up about 10 per cent from the previous year. The founder base is notably diverse, with around 28 per cent of start-up founders coming from outside Hong Kong. The encouraging result is a testament to Hong Kong’s attractiveness to innovators, assisted by several key advantages such as a low and simple tax system, world-class financial services and the accessibility to both Mainland and international business opportunities. 
     
         He said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is firmly committed to positioning Hong Kong as a leading innovation and technology hub where start-ups play a pivotal role. He encouraged Bordeaux’s start-up community to expand their operations into Hong Kong, leveraging the city’s strategic position as a gateway to the vast markets on the Mainland and in Asia.
     
         Mr Yau also paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Bordeaux, Mr Pierre Hurmic, to brief him on Hong Kong’s latest initiatives to drive economic development, such as the reduction of liquor duty, and exchange views on forging closer bilateral relations in various areas such as start-ups, and wine and liquor industries.
     
         In the evening, Mr Yau attended the Bordeaux Wine Festival, the leading wine event in France, to learn about the latest developments of Bordeaux wine and liquor.
     
         Mr Yau will continue his visit to Bordeaux.

    Anthony Albanese, just back from the G7 and his cancelled meeting with Donald Trump, has abandoned the idea of going to next week’s NATO meeting in pursuit of face time with the elusive president.

    The word was that the prime minister would only go if he could be confident of a bilateral.

    The NATO thought bubble was always a long shot. Even if a meeting could have been arranged, there would have been risk of another no-show by Trump. Given the dramatic escalation and unpredictability of the Middle East crisis, Trump would be even more unreliable, quite apart from having his attention elsewhere.

    Albanese’s mistake was letting the NATO option be publicly known. It led to denigratory jokes about his “stalking” Trump. It also
    sounded as if the prime minister was insulting NATO, only willing to attend if he could secure the Trump one-on-one.

    So Albanese is back where he started, with all diplomatic efforts bent towards trying to secure a meeting, if possible reasonably soon. That might mean facing the scrum in the Oval Office, which Albanese has been anxious to avoid.

    Australia closes embassy in Tehran

    Meanwhile, the government has announced it has closed the Australian embassy in Tehran. The embassy’s 13 staff have left Iran.

    Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Friday, “This is not a decision taken lightly. It is a decision based on the deteriorating security environment in Iran”.

    “At this stage, our ability to provide consular services is extremely limited due to the situation on the ground. The airspace remains closed.”

    Asked how much more difficult it would be for Australians to leave Iran now there was no consular assistance in the country, Wong said: “We are really conscious it is extremely difficult. I wish it were not so. I wish that we had more capacity to assist but the difficult reality is the situation on the ground is extremely unstable.”

    Wong said Australia’s ambassador to Iran, Ian McConville, would “remain in the region to support the Australian government’s response to the crisis”. The Department of Foreign Affairs is sending consular staff to Azerbaijan, including its border crossing, to help Australians who are leaving Iran.

    Australian Defence Force personnel and aircraft are being sent to the Middle East as part of planning for when airspace is re-opened. Wong stressed “they are not there for combat”.

    Other countries to close their embassies include New Zealand and Switzerland. The United States does not have an embassy there.

    Wong urged Australians able to leave “to do so now, if it is safe. Those who are unable to, or do not wish to leave, are advised to shelter in place”.

    About 2000 Australian citizens, permanent residents and family members are registered as wanting to depart. There are about 1200 registered in Israel seeking to depart.

    Australians in Iran seeking consular assistance should call the Australian government’s 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305 outside Australia and 1300 555 135 (in Australia).

    From grocery shopping through UPI to smart classrooms in remote villages, much of India’s digital progress over the past two decades has depended on something that most citizens never think about: fast, secure internet infrastructure. At the centre of this invisible but essential ecosystem is the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), which turned 20 on Thursday.

    Set up in 2003 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), NIXI has played a key role in ensuring that India’s internet remains local in routing, robust in performance, and ready for future demands. It currently operates 77 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across the country, which help domestic traffic stay within India’s borders — reducing latency, increasing speed, and enhancing security.

    A resilient internet, a resilient India

    In a statement marking the occasion, NIXI CEO Dr Devesh Tyagi said, “A resilient internet is the foundation of a resilient India. As we celebrate NIXI Day, we renew our commitment to making the internet faster, safer, and more inclusive.”

    The organisation’s role came into sharp focus during the COVID-19 lockdowns. As physical mobility shut down, internet traffic surged. Doctors turned to telemedicine. Schools moved online. Government services continued digitally. Underpinning all of this was an infrastructure designed to cope with scale and crisis — one that NIXI had quietly built over the years.

    Beyond speed: trust, inclusion, and language

    While speed and reliability have always been priorities, NIXI has also focused on inclusivity and localisation.     Potential use of tactical nuclear weapons by the United States in Iran would be a catastrophic development, Russian state news agency TASS quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying on Friday.

    Peskov was commenting on what he called speculative media reports about that possibility. His comments, as reported by TASS, did not mention any media by name.

    The Guardian newspaper reported that U.S. defence officials were briefed that using conventional bombs against Iran’s underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow would not be enough to destroy it completely, and that destroying it would require initial attacks with conventional bombs and then dropping a tactical nuclear weapon from a B-2 bomber.

    However, the British newspaper said President Donald Trump was not considering using a tactical nuclear weapon on Fordow and the possibility was not presented by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, in meetings in the White House Situation Room.

    Trump said on Thursday that any decision on potential U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict would be made within two weeks.

    Russia, which has close ties with Iran, has warned strongly against U.S. military intervention on the side of Israel.

  • LA Lakers to be sold in NBA record-breaking $10 billion deal

    The Buss family is entering an agreement to sell a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, ESPN reported on Wednesday, marking the end of an era for one of the NBA’s most influential owners.

    Mark Walter, the CEO and chairman of holding company TWG Global, is set to take the majority ownership under the agreement which values the Lakers at $10 billion, ESPN reported, making it the largest-ever sale of a professional sports team.

    The Boston Celtics had become the latest NBA franchise to change ownership in March, closing a $6.05 billion sale to an investment group led by Bill Chisholm, a record figure for the league at the time.

    Walter, already an established figure in Los Angeles sports, has existing shares in MLB team Los Angeles Dodgers and WNBA franchise Los Angeles Sparks.

    The Lakers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    The late Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 and turned it into one of the most popular franchises in all of professional sports, winning five championships during their now-iconic “Showtime” era in the 1980s.

    His daughter, Jeanie Buss, took over as principal owner after Jerry died in 2013, making her one of the most powerful women in sports.

    Jeanie Buss will stay on as governor after the sale, according to the ESPN report.

    Lakers Hall of Fame point guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson – a former player, coach, and executive with the team during the Buss family’s tenure — congratulated both parties on reaching the agreement.

    “Laker fans should be ecstatic. A few things I can tell you about Mark – he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way,” Johnson, who is also a co-owner of the Dodgers alongside Walter, said in a post on X.

    “He will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike.

    “Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the Lakers legacy and tradition of winning… Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand.”
