Source: Government of Canada – Prime Minister

Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, participated in a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing.

The Coalition discussed ongoing efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and underlined their steadfast support for Ukraine’s long-term security. They committed to ensuring Ukraine’s ability to deter future Russian aggression and to continue exerting economic pressure on Russia. The leaders reaffirmed their support for U.S.-led peace efforts and the proposal of an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. If Russia chooses to reject or delay the ceasefire, the leaders will pursue further and stronger sanctions.

The meeting was hosted by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, co-chaired by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and attended by many of Canada’s closest Allies and partners.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cantwell Celebrates New Redmond-Bellevue Light Rail Extension

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington Maria Cantwell

    05.10.25

Cantwell Celebrates New Redmond-Bellevue Light Rail Extension

Sound Transit hosts grand openings at new Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond stations to celebrate 2 Line extension; 3.4-mile line extension connects Redmond to Bellevue; future completion of the full 2 Line will connect entire Eastside to Seattle

REDMOND, WA –Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, joined leaders of Sound Transit, Microsoft, and the City of Redmond to celebrate the grand opening of the Downtown Redmond Light Rail Extension.

The 3.4-mile extension will connect Redmond to Bellevue, adding two new Light Rail stations at Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond.

“Redmond has always been a technology leader,” Sen. Cantwell said. “Redmond builds half of the world’s satellites. Right here in Redmond, Washington — we are celebrating these innovations, because when it comes to building great businesses, you also have to build great transportation systems. And those transportation systems get people to where they work, where they want to play, restaurants, sporting events and concerts.”

“If we want to innovate, you have to make infrastructure investment,” she continued. “So everybody, get ready to use your ORCA card.”

A full transcript of Sen. Cantwell’s remarks today is HERE.

The Marymoor Village Station includes a 1,400-stall parking garage and will provide convenient access to concerts and recreational activities at Marymoor Park. The Downtown Redmond Station is close to shopping and dining at Redmond Town Center, as well as new transit-oriented housing in the city’s downtown core. Residents of Downtown Redmond will have just a six-minute commute to Redmond Technology Station at Microsoft headquarters on the 2 Line, and a 19-minute commute to downtown Bellevue. Trains will run every 10 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. seven days a week between the South Bellevue and Downtown Redmond stations.

Including the East Link Extension, Sound Transit expects to see 43,000 to 52,000 daily riders by 2026. Last summer, opening day ridership on the 2 Line between South Bellevue and Redmond Technology Station saw 35,000 riders; at its peak during the summer of 2024, there were approximately 150,000 total monthly boardings.

When the full 2 Line opens, it will add the Mercer Island and Judkins Park stations and connect to the 1 Line at the International District/Chinatown Station in downtown Seattle.

Additionally, Sound Transit has partnered with Bellwether Housing to provide 328 units of affordable housing, active businesses on the ground floors, and space for a community hub at the Overlake Village Station. The project will break ground later this year and will begin accepting residents in 2027. At Marymoor Village Station, a 3.5-acre site adjacent to the station will be the home to future development, which is anticipated to include a large amount of affordable housing units.

The Downtown Redmond Light Rail Extension was funded in part by a $521 million transit loan through the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA). The subsidized interest rate for TIFIA funding was less than half of what Sound Transit would have gotten otherwise, reducing lending costs on the projects by $200 million to $300 million.  In addition, Sound Transit worked with the U.S. Department of Transportation to refinance five TIFIA loans, including this project, resulting in savings of more than $500 million for the agency.

Sen. Cantwell is a longtime champion of ongoing investments in Washington state’s light rail system. In April 2024, she joined local, state, and federal leaders to celebrate the grand opening of the new Sound Transit East Link Starter Line, which connected South Bellevue to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond. In August 2024, she joined the community to celebrate the Lynnwood Link Extension connecting Lynnwood, Montlake Terrace, and Shoreline to the Light Rail system.

Upon finalization of the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill, Sen. Cantwell celebrated the inclusion of $329.14 million for the Federal Way Link Light Rail Extension – which fully funds the project three years ahead of schedule — and $254 million for the Lynnwood Light Rail Extension. As then-chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Sen. Cantwell helped deliver large funding increases for transportation in the Biden-Harris Infrastructure Law.

  • MIL-OSI Security: ACLU Drops Baseless Lawsuit Over False Claims that ICE Deported U.S. Citizens

Source: US Department of Homeland Security

ACLU falsely accused DHS of deporting a U.S. Citizen despite the child’s mother choosing to bring the child with her when she was removed.

WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security announced that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) dropped its baseless lawfare case against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department.

“The ACLU dropped its lawsuit on the false claims that DHS deported a U.S. citizen,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “The truth is, and has always been, that the mother—who was in the country illegally—chose to bring her 2-year-old with her to Honduras when she was removed. The narrative that DHS is deporting American children is false and irresponsible.”

The parent, Jenny Carolina Lopez-Villela , made the decision to take her child to Honduras. ICE asks parents if they want to be removed with their children or if they would like to place a child with someone the parent designates. In this case, the parent stated they wanted to be removed with their child.

Jenny Carolina Lopez-Villela illegally entered this country three times in September 2019, March of 2021, and August 2021. She and her older daughter were deemed inadmissible to the United States the first time she entered the country and both her and her daughter were given final orders of removal in March 2020. When she was taken into ICE custody in April 2025, she chose to bring her younger daughter, who is an American Citizen, with her to Honduras and presented a valid United States passport.

DHS takes its responsibility to protect children seriously and will continue to work with federal law enforcement to ensure that children are safe and protected. Parents, who are here illegally, can take control of their departure. The CBP Home app gives parents illegally in the country a chance to take full control of their departure and self-deport, with the potential ability to return the legal, right way and come back to live the American dream. It is free and available for all mobile devices.

  • MIL-OSI USA: 05.10.2025 Sen. Cruz Resolution Overturning Biden Appliance Regulation Signed into Law

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Texas Ted Cruz

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued a statement after President Trump signed into law his Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to rescind a consumer appliance regulation on natural gas water heaters, which was imposed by the Biden-Harris administration in December 2024. If left in place, the regulation would have increased costs and limited consumer choice for Americans.
Sen. Cruz said, “The Biden-Harris administration knew they were increasing costs on American consumers and limiting consumers’ ability to choose the heater that works best for them, but they didn’t care. President Trump’s signature today will ensure this anti-consumer regulation is permanently revoked.”
    BACKGROUND
Industry experts estimate that the Biden-Harris rule would have added $450 to the cost of each affected water heater. Forty percent of Americans directly affected by the rule would have also seen a net cost increase over the life of the appliance. Sen. Cruz introduced this CRA to repeal the rule in January.

  • MIL-OSI: BexBack Launches Double Deposit Bonus and 100x Leverage Crypto Trading No KYC

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SINGAPORE, May 10, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the price of Bitcoin surpassed the $100,000 mark and many analysts believe that it will enter a long-term high-volatility market. Holding spot positions may not continue to generate profits in the short term. BexBack Exchange is stepping up its efforts to provide traders with irresistible preferential packages. The platform now offers a 100% deposit bonus, a $50 welcome bonus for new users, and a 100x leverage on cryptocurrency trading, creating unparalleled opportunities for investors.

What Is 100x Leverage and How Does It Work?

Simply put, 100x leverage allows you to open larger trading positions with less capital. For example:

Suppose the Bitcoin price is $60,000 that day, and you open a long contract with 1 BTC. After using 100x leverage, the transaction amount is equivalent to 100 BTC.

One day later, if the price rises to $63,000, your profit will be (63,000 – 60,000) * 100 BTC / 60,000 = 5 BTC, a yield of up to 500%.

    With BexBack’s deposit bonus

BexBack offers a 100% deposit bonus. If the initial investment is 2 BTC, the profit will increase to 10 BTC, and the return on investment will double to 1000%.

Note: Although leveraged trading can magnify profits, you also need to be wary of liquidation risks.

How Does the 100% Deposit Bonus Work?
The deposit bonus from BexBack cannot be directly withdrawn but can be used to open larger positions and increase potential profits. Additionally, during significant market fluctuations, the bonus can serve as extra margin, effectively reducing the risk of liquidation.

    About BexBack?

BexBack is a leading cryptocurrency derivatives platform that offers 100x leverage on BTC, ETH, ADA, SOL, and XRP futures contracts. • MIL-OSI USA News: Presidential Message on the 250th Anniversary of the First Convening of the Second Continental Congress

    Source: The White House

On this day 250 years ago, a mighty assembly of statesmen, thinkers, lawyers, and patriots gathered at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to formally convene a revolutionary body to guide America to its independence. On May 10, 1775, our Nation’s forefathers convened the Second Continental Congress—a historic body that would go on to adopt the Declaration of Independence, the grandest and most important political document ever put to pen.

Following the famous “shot heard ‘round the world” at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775—the first major armed hostilities of the Revolutionary War, in which the British Army attempted to seize American military supplies and arrest American leaders—it became clear to the patriots that their conflict with the British Crown had escalated beyond mere disagreement.  Despite the colonists’ tireless efforts on behalf of peace, war was all but certain.  In the wake of the Boston Massacre, the imposition of the Intolerable Acts, and the lasting injustice of taxation without representation, Americans had formed the First Continental Congress in the fall of 1774 to seek redress for their grievances.  By the spring of 1775, following the lives taken at Lexington and Concord, a new Congress was convened—and America’s righteous crusade for independence was formally underway.

Comprised of true American titans like John and Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, James Madison, John Jay, and George Washington—whom Congress later appointed as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army—the Second Continental Congress was made up of some of the boldest, fiercest, and most visionary men ever to walk the face of the Earth.  This remarkable body would go on to preside over the Revolutionary War, establish critical international alliances, and maintain unity among the 13 Colonies as America secured its independence and ultimately emerged as a new Nation.

The Second Continental Congress set in motion our independence, our venerated political traditions, and the birth of the greatest Republic ever created.  As we commemorate 250 years since its first convening, we recommit to the ideals of our Nation’s founding.  We summon the courage of our Founding Fathers.  Above all, as we approach 250 years of glorious independence, we proudly invoke the spirit of 1776 to build a proud, hopeful, and radiant future.

    Valid 101300Z – 111200Z

…THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE FLORIDA
    PANHANDLE…SOUTHEAST ALABAMA…AND SOUTHWEST GEORGIA…

    …SUMMARY…
Severe thunderstorms including a damaging wind and tornado risk may
occur across parts of the Southeast, including northern Florida,
southern Alabama and southern Georgia. Other thunderstorms with
strong winds will be possible across the northern Rockies this
    afternoon and evening.

…Southeast including FL and far southeast AL/southern GA…
Multiple areas of strong storms are ongoing early this morning over
the northeast Gulf of America, originating within a moist/unstable
warm sector that continues to nudge closer to the coastal Florida
Panhandle and Big Bend. As a moist low-level level influx continues,
a severe threat will exist today particularly for coastal areas,
with the northern extent of the severe risk not entirely clear.
However, some severe risk should exist as far north as the weak
surface low and warm front effectively makes a northward
progression. Where sufficient destabilization does occur, moderately
strong/veering wind profiles will support storms capable of damaging
winds and some tornado potential. This appears to mainly be across
the Florida Panhandle, southeast Alabama, and southwest Georgia.
Non-supercell processes might even be a factor for funnel/brief
tornado potential farther west-northwest across Alabama toward the
frontal wave/surface triple point, in closer proximity to the upper
low. Otherwise, more of a damaging wind/some hail risk will exist
southward across parts of the Florida Peninsula. For short-term info
for northeast Florida/southeast Georgia, see Mesoscale Discussion
    757.

    …Montana/Idaho…
Strong heating and orographic lift over western Montana will favor
widely scattered thunderstorms developing by mid-late afternoon.
Very steep low-level lapse rates and a relatively dry sub-cloud
layers will promote efficient evaporative cooling with the stronger
cores as storms mature as they move northeast. A couple of clusters
are possible with severe outflow. This activity will likely spread
into northern/northeast Montana during the evening.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Pacific region hopes for ‘climate-conscious’ pope, says PCC leader

By Christina Persico, RNZ Pacific bulletin editor

The leader of the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) has reacted to the election of the new pope.

Pope Leo XIV was elected by his fellow cardinals in the Conclave on Thursday evening, Rome time.

Leo, 69, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, is originally from Chicago, and has spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru.

He became a cardinal only in 2023 and has become the first-ever US pope.

PCC general secretary Reverend James Bhagwan said he was not a Vatican insider, but there had been talk of cardinals feeling that the new pope should be a “middle-of-the-road person”.

Reverend Bhagwan said there had been prayers for God’s wisdom to guide the decisions made at the Conclave.

“I think if we look at where the decisions perhaps were made or based on, there had been a lot of talk that the cardinals going into Conclave had felt that a new pope would need to be someone who could take forward the legacy of Pope Francis, reaching out to those in the margins, but also be a sort of a middle-of-the-road person,” he said.

    Hopes for climate response
Reverend Bhagwan said the Pacific hoped that Pope Leo carried on the late Pope Francis’s connection to the climate change response.

He said Pope Francis released his “laudate deum” exhortation on the climate shortly before the United Nations climate summit in Dubai last year.

“The focus on care for creation, the focus for ending fossil fuels and climate justice, the focus on people from the margins — I think that’s important for the Pacific people at this time.

“I know that the Catholic Church in the Pacific has been focused on on its synodal process, and so he spoke about synodality as well.

“I know that there were hopes for an Oceania synod, just as Pope Francis held a synod of the Amazon. And I think that is still something that’s in the hearts of many of our Catholic leaders and Catholic members.

“We hope that this will be an opportunity to still bring that focus to the Pacific.”

    Picking up issues
New Zealand’s Cardinal John Dew, who was in the Conclave, said the new pope would not hesitate to speak out about issues around the world.

He said they were confident Pope Leo would pick up many of the issues Francis was well known for, like speaking up for climate change, human trafficking and the plight of refugees; and within the church, a different way of meeting and talking with one another — known as synodality — which is an ongoing process.

“I think any pope needs to be able to challenge things that are happening around the world, especially if it is affecting the lives of people, where the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer.”

Pope Leo appeared to be a very calm person, he added.

  • MIL-OSI Security: U.S. Attorney’s Office Filed 176 Border-Related Cases This Week

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

SAN DIEGO – Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California filed 176 border-related cases this week, including charges of assault on a federal officer, bringing in aliens for financial gain, reentering the U.S. after deportation, and importation of controlled substances.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is the fourth-busiest federal district, largely due to a high volume of border-related crimes. This district, encompassing San Diego and Imperial counties, shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. It includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing, connecting San Diego (America’s eighth largest city) and Tijuana (Mexico’s second largest city).

In addition to reactive border-related crimes, the Southern District of California also prosecutes a significant number of proactive cases related to terrorism, organized crime, drugs, white-collar fraud, violent crime, cybercrime, human trafficking and national security. Recent developments in those and other significant areas of prosecution can be found here.

A sample of border-related arrests this week:

    • On May 8, Ismael Castro-Gonzalez, a Mexican national, was arrested and charged with Assault on a Federal Officer and Attempted Entry of a Removed Alien. According to a complaint, two Border Patrol agents were attacked by Castro and others when they attempted to rescue Castro, who was hanging from barbed wire on the border wall with a broken ladder nearby. The agents were pelted with rocks by other immigrants, including one who was sitting atop the wall. One agent grabbed Castro’s right hand and forced him to release the wire. Once he broke Castro’s grip, the agent was able to pull Castro from the wire and take him to the ground, where Castro continued to struggle and attempted to tackle the agent. As they fell to the ground, Castro started reaching for the agent’s gun and collapsible steel baton.  The two agents were able to subdue Castro and arrest him. Castro was previously deported to Mexico on June 29, 2022, through the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
    • On May 6, Rosa Cervantez, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance. According to a complaint, Cervantez attempted to cross the border in the SENTRI lane at the Calexico West Port of Entry but a Customs and Border Protection officer discovered 36 plastic-wrapped packages hidden in a spare tire well of her car containing 85 pounds of fentanyl and more than 2 pounds of cocaine.
    • On May 7, Salvador Hernandez, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance. According to a complaint, Hernandez attempted to smuggle three pounds of methamphetamine through the pedestrian lanes of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Customs and Border Protection officers found three packages concealed in Hernandez’s waistline secured with Saran Wrap.
    • On May 7, Jose Tomas Lopez-Navarro of Honduras was arrested and charged with Attempted Entry after Deportation. According to a complaint, Lopez-Navarro submitted a counterfeit passport to a Customs and Border Patrol officer when asking to be admitted to the U.S. at the San Ysidro Pedestrian East Port of Entry. Lopez-Navarro had been previously removed from the U.S. to Honduras on February 4, 2025.

Also recently, a number of defendants with criminal records were convicted by a jury or sentenced for border-related crimes such as illegally re-entering the U.S. after previous deportation. Here are a few of those cases:

    • On April 30, Abner Leon-Mote, a Mexican national who was previously convicted of felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon in April 2018, was found guilty by a jury of Attempted Reentry of Removed Alien for again entering the U.S. illegally. Sentencing is scheduled for July 29, 2025 and Leon-Mote faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
    • On May 5, Omar Laveaga-Flores, a Mexican national who was previously convicted of an illegal entry offense in Arizona in 2022, was sentenced in federal court to 60 days in custody for again entering the U.S illegally.
    • On May 8, Juan Melgoza-Soto and Santiago Alfredo Gonzalez Hara, previously removed Mexican nationals, were sentenced in federal court to 73 days in custody for bringing an undocumented alien into the United States from Mexico.
    • On May 9, Martin Josue Gutierrez, a U.S. citizen, was sentenced to six months in custody for Transportation of Certain Aliens. The defendant had seven undocumented individuals in a truck, including several under a tarp in the bed of the truck, and failed to yield during an attempted vehicle stop by law enforcement.

Pursuant to the Department’s Operation Take Back America priorities, federal law enforcement has focused immigration prosecutions on undocumented aliens who are engaged in criminal activity in the U.S., including those who commit drug and firearms crimes, who have serious criminal records, or who have active warrants for their arrest. Federal authorities have also been prioritizing investigations and prosecutions against drug, firearm, and human smugglers and those who endanger and threaten the safety of our communities and the law enforcement officers who protect the community.

The immigration cases were referred or supported by federal law enforcement partners, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO), Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the support and assistance of state and local law enforcement partners.

Indictments and criminal complaints are merely allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Local students’ Hexagon Art brings joy and connection to new ODHS Seaside office

    Source: US State of Oregon

span dir=”ltr”>Visitors and staff have recently noticed a new visual spark as they enter the Child Welfare lobby of the Oregon Department of Human Services Seaside offices. As you walk into the Child Welfare main lobby, you can see on the wall to your right an array of hexagon-shaped art. There’s a painting of a soccer player, a sloth hanging upside down from a branch, a mountain with a lake at its feet, a rainbow, a gray and white dog and many more scenes. Some hexagons have inspiring words on them, such as “LOVE,”“You’re STRONG!,”“Kindness” and “Food Makes You Happy.”

The art was created by 60 students from Warrenton Middle School and Warrenton Grade School especially for the ODHS new Seaside office. The office recently opened at 1111 Roosevelt Drive near the Seaside Outlet Mall stores. The office houses Child Welfare, Oregon Eligibility Partnership and Self-Sufficiency Programs, which support people with food and health care benefits and other services.

“It’s been amazing. It’s the first thing everybody sees. A lot of people spend time admiring the art. Some of the words on the hexagons were created on the school’s 3-D printer. Everybody sees something different in the pieces,” Kaylin Hammond, Child Welfare Resource Developer, said.

Hammond said she “had this off-the-wall idea” for the new office space, so she met with Warrenton Schools Art Teacher Heidi Lent and her students. It was the students came up with the hexagon idea symbolizing the interdependence of bringing the school and community together. It is modeled after the Interdependence Hexagon Project. The themes typically are social justice, identity, peace and the environment.

“The hexagon is a compilation of interdependent lines, like human relationships. It shows, as an artist, how we are interconnected. Our focus was how are we interconnected in our community and our county and our school,” Lent said.

On the back of each hexagon, students were asked to explain the meaning of their creation. Here are some of what the students wrote:

    • The softball players showing girls high-fiving each other: “Sports and kindness because usually at the end of games we give high-fives, thanking the other team. Being kind through your sports.”
    • Sloth – “The sloth was what I was connected to because my mom bought it for me and I care about my mom deeply.”
    • A body looking up at the words: ‘youth’ and ‘heart, 3-D printed: “Hey little one don’t waste your youth on a broken heart ’cause before you know it, it’ll be gone.” –Livingston, Atlas lyrics.
    • The boy sitting next to dog with a tennis ball: “Representing never being alone. The dog is there to comfort him and keep him safe.”
    • Dog and little girl, nose to nose: “My dog just passed away. Every time I was sad my dog was there to comfort me. How do you get comfort?”
    • Newspaper collage with the word ‘LOVE’ in it: “Love is in the middle. as we love our community.”
    • Mountain with trees” “Art is positive because it makes you feel closer to nature. It makes you feel joy to see.”
    • A bunch of flowers: “Because when people are sad and if I am close to them, I buy them flowers. It represents happy and beauty.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: At Port of LA, Rep. Jimmy Gomez Highlights Real-World Pain of Trump Tariffs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)

You can watch Rep. Jimmy Gomez’s reel visiting the Port of LA here.

LOS ANGELES, CA – Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) visited the Port of Los Angeles to hear directly from port staff and highlight the real-world consequences of President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods — including a projected 35% drop in cargo volume next week. Reps. Gomez is fighting to pass legislation to shut down Trump’s global tariffs, prevent him from punishing allies, and put Congress back in charge of trade.

“I saw the impact of Trump’s tariffs up close today at the Port of LA — and it’s devastating,” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34). “Cargo is down, jobs are being cut, store shelves are starting to empty, and small businesses are struggling to keep up. The truth is, Trump hasn’t delivered any real trade wins—just photo ops. His tariffs are self-inflicted wounds on our economy.”

As the busiest container port in the U.S., the Port of LA is a critical economic engine that supports nearly a million jobs across the greater LA area. With 145% tariffs now in effect, port officials are already seeing cancelled sailings, slower cargo movement, and reduced hours for workers — jeopardizing jobs, raising consumer prices, and hurting small businesses and even California farmers who depend on U.S. exports.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez — a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees trade — has been holding the administration accountable in committee and led the Congressional Dads Caucus in calling out the harm to working families.

WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) issued the following statement after reports that Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents earlier today:

“I’m outraged by the arrest of a sitting mayor simply for trying to do their job. Oversight is not a crime—it’s a cornerstone of democracy. If this can happen to a mayor and members of Congress, what happens to ordinary people who speak out? To all who are watching this injustice I say, we must not be intimidated. We will fight in the courts, in Congress, and march in the streets until justice and transparency are restored.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Unlocking homeownership: A bipartisan approach to building affordable housing

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman John Larson (1st District of Connecticut)

Rep. Larson co-authored the following op-ed with Rep. Mike Kelly (PA-16) that appeared in The Hill:

Erie, Pa. and Hartford, Conn. share much in common — snowy winters, growing technology sectors and, like many other communities across the nation, a pressing need for more affordable homeownership opportunities.

In cities like Erie and Hartford — which we proudly represent in Congress — as well as dozens of other older industrial cities, we’re witnessing block after block of aging homes deteriorating within a stone’s throw of burgeoning commercial districts. In east Erie, nearly 20 percent of properties are classified as being in poor or unsound condition, with another 37 percent showing the beginnings of disinvestment or neglect.

The intertwined issues of blight, vacancy and an aging housing stock are not unique to older northeastern cities. They represent a truly national crisis, affecting cities from St. Louis and Detroit to Fresno and Jacksonville, from Baltimore to Birmingham and Charlotte. These challenges hit particularly hard in rural communities that have been suffering with outmigration and years of disinvestment.

Simultaneously, the U.S. is vastly underproducing housing. By some estimates, there is a shortage of 4 million homes. With construction costs on the rise and mortgage rates still high, it is exceedingly difficult to build homes that are affordable for lower- and middle-income families.

The cost of inaction is severe for American families and local economies everywhere. Many families find it challenging to secure a home they can afford to buy, making it harder to build wealth. Moreover, existing homeowners often face extensive repair needs. In order to reverse the United States’ declining homeownership rate, we must build new homes that Americans can afford to own and make repairs to existing housing across the country.

That’s why we proudly lead the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act in Congress. This bipartisan legislation would create a new tax credit to bridge the gap between the cost of building or repairing a home and the home’s value once it is built. By addressing this “value gap,” developers would be incentivized to build and renovate tens of thousands of homes annually in struggling urban and rural communities, helping to revitalize these areas while making homeownership accessible for many first-time homebuyers.

Our Neighborhood Homes proposal also utilizes a successful public-private partnership model to target communities in the greatest need, especially rural areas and those with high poverty rates. By partnering with the private sector, our bill could result in 500,000 new or rehabilitated homes over the next decade, while also creating good-paying jobs in construction and related industries.

As Congress prepares tax legislation for 2025, we have a rare opportunity for bipartisan action to address our affordable housing crisis and narrow our country’s staggering homeownership gap. The need to keep our neighborhoods safe, vibrant and economically robust transcends party lines. More than 100 members of Congress from both parties supported the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act last Congress, and the bill has been endorsed by a broad coalition of industry and housing trade groups, state housing finance agencies, neighborhood redevelopment organizations, and both nonprofit and for-profit housing developers.

We have just reintroduced the bill and now it’s time to take it across the finish line. Americans deserve more affordable homeownership opportunities, and many neighborhoods require investments to thrive. We must pass the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act.

U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and John Larson (D-Conn.) are the co-leads of the bipartisan Neighborhood Homes Improvement Act. Kelly serves as chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax, and Larson serves as ranking member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Neguse Slams Natural Resource Republicans’ Late-Night Move to Add Public Land Sales to Reconciliation Bill: “I don’t think that’s the way to do business in the House.”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Joe Neguse (D-Co 2)

Washington, D.C. — In case you missed it, during Tuesday’s House Natural Resources Committee 13 hour markup on the budget reconciliation bill, Republicans moved to add a late-night, last-minute amendment to the legislation that would order the sale of thousands of acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah. Revenue from the auctioning off of these shared spaces, coupled with proposed cuts to critical programs like Medicaid and Social Security, lay the groundwork for the implementation of President Donald Trump’s radical agenda, which includes a $7 trillion tax giveaway to billionaires and big corporations.

Congressman Joe Neguse, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Federal Lands, immediately reacted to this disastrous proposal.

    Watch Rep. Neguse’s remarks HERE

Highlights from Rep. Neguse’s exchange with Committee Republicans below:

NEGUSE: A couple of quick questions. One, I would just say, more broadly, for the better part of the last 11 hours, I suppose, we’ve been making the case here on this side of the aisle—13 hours, I stand corrected—that the Republican reconciliation bill, plans to sell off our public lands. Lo and behold, at 11:00pm ET, we finally get an amendment. Does precisely what we said this bill would do. But the question I have, a very simple one. And I think I know the answer from Mrs. Malloy, but I’m not so sure about Mr. Amodei. Ms. Malloy, do you represent the areas in this bill in Utah, Washington County and Saint George that you would like to have those lands conveyed?

    REP. MALOY (UT-02): I do.

NEGUSE: Okay. Thank you. And this isn’t meant to be a gotcha. I’m actually trying–you all proposed this amendment, so we’re considering it. Mr. Amodei, do you represent Clark County?

REP. AMODEI (NV-02): I do not represent Clark County, but I have been asked by the Clark County Commission to introduce the bill on their behalf as a member of the majority in the House of Representatives.

NEGUSE: So, you, just to be clear, for all of your Republican colleagues, because I’ve sat on this dais year after year and been lectured by my colleagues on other side of the aisle about how important it is to engage your colleagues who represent areas that may be at issue in a particular bill. You don’t represent Clark County. There are multiple other Nevada representatives who do.

Mr. Horsford represents this area. Mrs. Lee represents this area. Mrs. Titus represents this area. And I don’t think that we should proceed in considering the amendment until we’ve had an opportunity to hear from them about whether or not they believe that these lands ought to be conveyed. I think that’s a fair request. I think you’d feel the same way.

If any number of the counties that you represent, in western Nevada were at issue in this bill. Is that an unreasonable request?

AMODEI: Well, I don’t know how it works in Colorado, sir, but I can tell you, in Nevada, we all talk frequently, and this is not going to come as a surprise to any of them. Please feel free to consult them as you see fit—-

NEGUSE: They support this? They support this amendment?

AMODEI: They are aware of the—

    NEGUSE: They’re aware of it?

AMODEI: Don’t put words in my mouth.

NEGUSE: I’m asking you. I’m not putting words. I’m asking you. I’m saying, are they supportive of this amendment? You haven’t asked your colleagues in Nevada whether or not they support the conveyance of land in their district, not yours.

AMODEI: The answer to your question is no.

NEGUSE: Yeah, well, I think it is deeply irresponsible to put forth an amendment, and I don’t take issue, by the way, I might have disagreements on the merits with Ms. Malloy with respect to the amendment, but I understand her desire on behalf of her constituents to move forward with this amendment. But I would think, at a minimum, Mr. Amodei, that you would do your colleagues in Nevada the courtesy of at least striking that language regarding Clark County, engage with your three other colleagues before this gets to the floor and then have a conversation with them. But to basically say to them that they have no say as to what happens with respect to land conveyances in their congressional districts, I think is a slippery slope.

And I just I would hope that my colleagues and Mr. Chairman in particular, I would hope that you would consider that as you weigh this amendment. I really in good faith, I would hope that you would consider at least striking that provision so that you can give those other members of Congress an opportunity to weigh in here, at least be heard, as opposed to an a 11:00 pm ET last-minute amendment that they’re just finding out about right now as we’re texting them.

I don’t think that’s the way to do business in the House.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hassan, Grassley Lead Legislation to Aid Victims of Identity Theft

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Hampshire Maggie Hassan

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a senior member and former chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), a fellow Finance Committee member, reintroduced the Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act to provide efficient help for Americans whose social security numbers have been stolen.

“Victims of identity theft whose Social Security numbers have been stolen shouldn’t have to deal with a cumbersome and frustrating process to get help from the Social Security Administration,” Hassan said. “This bipartisan legislation is an important way to ensure that Americans whose identities are stolen can access support through a streamlined process and a single point of contact at the Social Security Administration. This is one of the many common-sense proposals in Congress to combat waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer funds without making it harder for people to access their hard-earned benefits.”

“Millions of Americans suffer from identity theft each year, and Social Security numbers are a top target. Unfortunately, when a victim calls up the Social Security Administration, they can be jerked around from one contact to another, having to reexplain the situation each time. Our bill will help streamline the process by providing a victim of identity theft with a single point of contact at the agency, easing this frustrating and stressful process,” Grassley said.

    Background:

Misuse of Social Security numbers is a large problem, and victims who are affected by identity theft face hurdles when trying to resolve issues with large, multi-office agencies such as the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Currently, a victim may have to engage in multiple procedures and work with numerous representatives at SSA to resolve Social Security related identity-theft issues. The Grassley-Hassan Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act provides a single, focal point of contact at SSA to provide efficient resolution of an identity-theft victim’s issues.

Additional cosponsors include Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-N.V.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Angus King (I-Maine) and James Lankford (R-Okla.).

The legislation has the endorsement of numerous groups, including: AARP, Social Security Works, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) and the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Newsom proclaims Older Californians Month

Source: US State of California 2

    May 9, 2025

Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring May 2025 as “Older Californians Month.”

The text of the proclamation and a copy can be found below:

    PROCLAMATION

California is home to nearly nine million older residents who immeasurably enrich our families, communities, and economy through their diverse life experiences, cultures, and contributions. By 2030, one in four Californians will be 60 or older, and over one million will be 85 or older. Californians enjoy the fourth highest life expectancy in the United States, contributing to more people who reach the century mark than ever before with an estimated 28,388 people who will be age 100 or older in 2030.

California is out in front of these national demographic shifts, continuing to deliver results in year five of the state’s 10-year Master Plan for Aging. Over the past year, we have elevated inclusive policies and programs that reflect many shared priorities of Californians. These include home and community care essential to our economy and our families; climate and disaster readiness efforts; behavioral health system modernization, including more geriatric care; expanding health care access and affordability, with more dementia prevention, screening, and care; and more affordable and accessible housing, transportation, and broadband in communities statewide.

All Californians can be proud of the progress we’re making to build a state that fully includes and supports older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. These efforts and our work to confront ageism and ableism are a key component of my Administration’s commitment to building an inclusive California for all.

The theme of Older Californians Month this year – Flip the Script on Aging – focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. Stigma and stereotypes are harmful to the self-image of older people and feed inequities and discrimination in systems of care and in communities more broadly. The Master Plan for Aging ensures all Californians have access to opportunities and services to live how and where they choose, providing person-centered services to those who need it most.

The positive impact of our diverse and growing aging population is seen every day, from the record numbers of older adults in the workforce to the countless retirees and neighbors who volunteer their time to build up communities across the state. This month and throughout the year, let us all celebrate the older Californians who have contributed decades of knowledge, skills, and wisdom to our state and continue working towards a better future for Californians of every generation.

NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as “Older Californians Month.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 9th day of May 2025.

HDOA and County of Hawaii Continue Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Treatments at Kona Airport

Posted on May 9, 2025 in Main

    May 9, 2025
    NR25-11

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture (HDOA), with the assistance of the County of Hawai‘i Public Works Department (COH-PWD), began another round of treatment of palm trees at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) on Tuesday, May 6,  in an effort to stop the coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) from becoming established on Hawai‘i Island. This was a follow-up to treatment conducted last month at the airport.(Link to previous news release:  https://hdoa.hawaii.gov/blog/main/nr25-08-konacrbtreatments/ )

“It really is ‘all hands on deck’ in West Hawai‘i and all our partner agencies are dedicating  everything they have to stop the establishment of CRB on Hawai‘i Island,” said Sharon Hurd, chairperson of the Hawai‘i Board of Agriculture. “Mahalo, again, to Mayor Kimo Alameda and his public works crew– their resources and assistance have been phenomenal in this coordinated effort.”

The County of Hawai‘i and HDOA have been working collaboratively since January 2025 after CRB was detected in the Kona area. COH-PWD has been providing the assistance of their boom trucks to treat the tops of palm trees.

The following is a brief timeline of detections and intense treatments around West Hawai‘i:

October 2023 A Waikoloa resident found six grubs (larvae) in a decaying palm tree stump. Increased surveillance continued throughout the island and more intensely on the Kona side.
April 2024 The Big Island Invasive Species Committee (BIISC) reported that four adult CRB were found in three traps in the Waikoloa area.
September 2024 HDOA Plant Pest Control (PPC) personnel found a single CRB in a trap during routine monitoring in Waikoloa.
January 2025 The County of Hawai‘i offered its resources and assistance to HDOA, including the use of its 75-foot boom truck to treat the crowns of palm trees.
Jan. 14, 2025 Waikoloa Village – HDOA/COH team treated a total of 38 trees via crown treatments and 24 trees were treated via an injection system which provides systemic protection against CRB.
March 3, 2025 BIISC reported one adult CRB in a detection trap along the boundary of KOA. A day later, BIISC reported that two more adult CRBs were found in traps at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai‘i (NELHA).
March 14-19 2025 KOA – HDOA/COH and KOA airport staff used two boom trucks to treat 123 trees on the airport grounds and injected 12 more trees that were inaccessible to the boom trucks.
April 7 & 8, 2025 NELHA – HDOA/COH crews treated the crowns of 44 trees and injected 14 trees due to the close proximity to water.
April 15, 16 & 21, 2025 Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor and Marina – HDOA/COH crews treated 313 crowns and treated 50+ trees via injection due to the close proximity to water.
April 24, 2025 West Hawai‘i Veteran’s Cemetery – 13 crowns treated. BIISC had reported finding one wing of an adult CRB. Although a full specimen was not found, HDOA treated all palms on the site as a precaution.
May 6, 2025 KOA – HDOA/COH and Kona airport staff treated 86 palms via crown application.
May 2025 Treatment at the Keāhole Ag Park is being scheduled later this month.
Ongoing Surveillance for CRB continues around Hawai‘i Island by HDOA, BIISC, University of Hawai‘i, the County of Hawai‘i and the state Department of Health Vector Control Branch.
March 2025 to present A total of 10 adult CRB have been reported in the areas of Keāhole Ag
Park, NELHA, O‘oma, Kohanaiki and KOA.

Staff from HDOA’s Plant Pest Control Branch and Pesticides Branch applied the treatments, both on the crown of the trees and via injection into the trees when necessary. All palms that were treated were tagged and surrounded with yellow tape to indicate treatment. Coconuts from treated trees should not be consumed. Questions regarding pesticide use may be addressed to HDOA’s Pesticides Branch at 808-973-9402.

Residents on all islands are asked to be vigilant when purchasing mulch, compost and soil products, and to inspect bags for evidence of entry holes. CRB breed in decomposing plant and animal waste. An adult beetle is about 2-inches long, all black and has a single horn on its head. CRB leave distinctive V-shaped cuts and/or scalloped edges in palm leaves and bore holes may be visible in the trunks.

Residents may go to the CRB Response website at:  https://www.crbhawaii.org/  to learn more about how to detect the signs of CRB damage and how to identify CRB life stages. Reports of possible CRB infestation may also be made to the state’s toll-free Pest Hotline at 808-643-PEST (7378).

  • MIL-OSI USA: California launches new AI-powered chatbot that provides wildfire resources in 70 languages

Source: US State of California 2

    May 9, 2025

What you need to know: Ahead of peak wildfire season, California has launched “Ask CAL FIRE,” an AI-powered chatbot on CAL FIRE’s website offering wildfire resources and emergency information in 70 languages.

SACRAMENTO — As California marks Wildfire Preparedness Week, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced CAL FIRE has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered chatbot on its website, fire.ca.gov. The tool is designed to help Californians more easily access critical fire prevention resources and near-real-time emergency information—offering support in 70 languages.

The chatbot, “Ask CAL FIRE,” provides quick, reliable answers to commonly asked questions using information already available on CAL FIRE’s website and helps guide users to the appropriate pages for more detailed information. It also serves as a two-way tool – providing real-time insights to CAL FIRE on what information Californians are looking for.

“California is harnessing technology and innovation to help people when it matters most. Ahead of peak wildfire season, we’re launching a new chatbot that will connect Californians with real-time information and resources in the language they speak. This is yet another way we’re transforming government to better serve people.”

    Governor Gavin Newsom

Whether looking for home hardening strategies, defensible space guidance, or the latest on wildfire incidents over 10 acres across the state, users now have a simpler, more accessible way to get the answers they need—any time, day or night.

“In an era of fast-moving wildfires, fast-moving information is essential,” said CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler. “Tools like this help ensure Californians from all walks of life get the guidance they need to stay safe and informed.”

The initiative underscores CAL FIRE’s commitment to modernizing public communication tools and expanding equitable access to vital information about wildfire preparedness, emergency incidents, and career opportunities in fire service.

CAL FIRE is a global leader in utilizing innovation and technology to fight fires smarter, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), satellites, and more for wildfire detection, projection, response and suppression. CAL FIRE, in partnership with UC San Diego, was previously recognized by TIME magazine for its Best Invention of 2023, for using Artificial Intelligence to monitor over 1,000 cameras throughout the state and detect wildfires, allowing CAL FIRE to respond faster.

At the same time, California has built up the largest aerial firefighting fleet in the world, including the recently added – and night-time capable – firefighting Fire Hawk helicopters to quickly and effectively contain wildfires..

In addition to nearly doubling the state’s budget for CAL FIRE in recent years, the state has also dramatically increased work to prevent wildfire. While 57% of California’s forests are federally managed, the state government manages only 3% of the forestland. On state land, more than 2,200 projects are complete or underway, and in recent years, California has treated nearly 2 million acres – made possible by scaling up investments to 10 times the amount from when the Governor took office in 2019.

Visit fire.ca.gov to try the chatbot and explore wildfire preparedness resources for your home, family, and community.

What you need to know: Governor Newsom has been appointed co-chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance – a bipartisan coalition of 24 governors working to achieve a net-zero carbon pollution future in America by advancing state-led, high-impact climate action.

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom has been appointed co-chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance. Governor Newsom, alongside Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, will serve on the alliance’s executive committee, overseeing the climate coalition’s strategic direction.

Americans want cleaner air and water, lower costs, and healthier communities — and that’s exactly what Alliance governors are delivering. As the federal government retreats from the climate fight, states are charging ahead. We were built to lead in moments like this, and as co-chair of this coalition, I look forward to partnering with my fellow governors to keep America on track.

    Governor Gavin Newsom

The Alliance, consisting of 24 bipartisan governors, represents nearly 60% of the U.S. economy and 55% of the U.S. population. Governor Newsom and Governor Evers were appointed co-chairs by the coalition’s members and will serve a one-year term. The Alliance’s executive committee also consists of New York Governor and outgoing co-chair Kathy Hochul, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson.

This appointment follows Governor Newsom’s announcement in March that he will serve as co-chair of America Is All In – an expansive coalition of state, local, tribal, private sector, and non-profit leaders supporting climate efforts at the subnational level.

    May 8, 2025

KAILUA-KONA, Hawai‘i Island – Officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) Hawai‘i Branch Marine Unit have seized a fishing vessel after receiving multiple complaints about longline fishing occurring in the Hawai‘i State Territorial Sea, comprising 3,069 square miles of water, that extends 12 nautical miles around the state.

DOCARE officers boarded the Wai‘aka yesterday morning about seven miles offshore, after observing it fishing with approximately four miles of line deployed. It is illegal to longline fish in state waters within the state Territorial Sea, which extends from the high-water mark to 12 nautical miles from shore.

52-year-old Konane Zager of Kona was cited for violating HRS Section 189-2.5, relating to Long Line Fishing Prohibition. The criminal penalty for violating this section is a petty misdemeanor.

Three ahi were caught and a live one was released. The other two weighed in at 95 pounds and 103 pounds and had an estimated market value of $1251.

Zager is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court on June 19, 2025.
