  • MIL-OSI Security: Seven Romanian nationals charged with immigration offenses

    GREAT FALLS – Seven Romanian nationals accused of crossing illegally from Canada into Montana appeared yesterday for arraignment, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said.

    Two defendants, Ionut Gheorghe, 27, and Adi Marinescu Gheorghe, 32, pleaded not guilty to transporting illegal aliens, which, if convicted, carries a maximum punishment of five years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.  Adi Marinescu Gheorghe was also charged with illegal reentry of a removed alien, which is punishable by two years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.

    The other five defendants, Mihai Mahaela, 40, Sorin Sandu, 45, Conte Nicolae, 19, Alin Amadeus Musuroi, 23, and Lacrimoara Nicolae, 51, each pleaded not guilty to illegal entry of an alien. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to six months in prison, fined $100,000, and placed on supervised release for one year.

    Magistrate Judge John T. Johnston presided. All seven defendants were detailed pending further proceedings.

    The government alleged in court documents that Ionut Gheorghe and Adi Marinescu Gheorghe were each driving a van on April 25, 2025. The other defendants were passengers in the vans, which the U.S. Border Patrol detected illegally crossing into the United States at approximately 2:30 a.m. Law enforcement located the vans traveling south on I-15, stopped the vehicles, took the occupants into custody, and transported them to the Sweetgrass Border Patrol Station for further investigation and processing. In total, the two vans contained 21 men, women, and children.

    The United States Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case, and the United States Border Patrol conducted the investigation.

    These cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

    The charging documents are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Washington Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material

    Spokane, Washington – Acting United States Attorney Richard R. Barker announced that United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice sentenced Donald Eugene Griffin, Jr., age 43, to 144 months in prison on charges of distributing child sexual abuse material. Judge Rice also imposed a lifetime of supervised release. Griffin will also be required to register as a sex offender.

    According to court documents and information presented in the sentencing hearing, in November 2019, the FBI developed information that Griffin was in possession of images of children being sexually abused.

    In March 2020, the FBI executed a warrant at Griffin’s home and seized Griffin’s electronic devices. Investigators found multiple images of child sexual abuse material on those devices, and Griffin admitted to using online platforms to access and obtain child sexual abuse material. Griffin also admitted to discussing having sex with a child and to distributing and receiving images of children being sexually abused.

    Agents investigated Griffin’s online accounts and uncovered chats between Griffin and individuals who appeared younger than 18. On several occasions, Griffin sent child sexual abuse material or solicited it, from those individuals. Griffin also consistently spoke to others about having sex with minors.

    In early 2024, a civilian contacted investigators and said they had been posing as an 11-year-old girl on Instagram and chatting with Griffin. Griffin sent naked photos of himself to this person he believed was a child and discussed having sex with her.

    “Mr. Griffin’s conduct was predatory and depraved. He not only trafficked in images of children being sexually abused – he actively sought out opportunities to engage with minors online in ways that were both explicit and dangerous,” said Acting United States Attorney Richard R. Barker. “I’m grateful to the FBI and AUSA Rebecca Perez for their outstanding work on this case and for bringing Mr. Griffin to justice.”

    “Not only did Mr. Griffin possess and distribute disturbing images depicting child sexual assault, but he was even engaging in sexually explicit chats with someone he believed to be a minor.” said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Seattle field office. “It is apt this sentence is being handed down on the final day of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Protecting and finding justice for child victims remains a priority of the FBI, both in the State of Washington and nationwide.”

    This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.   • MIL-OSI: Applied Rating Index Q1 2025 Results Released

    Toronto, ON, May 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Applied Systems® today announced the first quarter of 2025 results of the Applied Rating Index™, the Canadian insurance industry’s premium rate index. In Q1 2025, average premiums for both Personal Auto lines and Personal Property lines increased year over year. Quarter over quarter, premium rate change increased for Personal Auto and increased for Personal Property compared to Q4 2024.

    For Personal Auto, all provinces experienced an increase year over year, with Ontario seeing the highest at 14.7% and Alberta the lowest at 12.1%. For Personal Property lines, all provinces except British Columbia experienced an increase in premium rate change year over year. Quebec saw the highest premium rate change at 9.6% and British Columbia was the only province to experience a decline in rates at an average of -5.9%.

    Key findings for Q1 2025 include:

    • Personal Auto: In Q1 2025, Personal Auto premium rate change increased 13.2% versus Q1 2024. Personal Auto premium rate change increased 2.2% versus Q4 2024.
    • Personal Property: In Q1 2025, Personal Property premium rate change increased 5.0% versus Q1 2024. Personal Property premium rate change increased 1.7% versus Q4 2024. 
    • Provinces: Across Personal Auto, all provinces experienced increased premium rate change year over year with Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces seeing 12.1%, 14.7%, 14.0% and 14.2% respectively. Relative to Q4 2024, all provinces, except Alberta, saw increases in quarter over quarter premium rate change with Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces experiencing –1.7%, 4.5%, 2.0%, and 3.3% respectively.
    • Personal Property lines experienced increased year over year premium rate change across all provinces except British Columbia. Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces, and Saskatchewan & Manitoba saw increases in premium rate change year over year with 3.4%, 5.7%, 9.6%, 4.1% and 4.0% respectively. British Columbia recorded a year over year decline in premium rate change of −5.9%. Relative to Q4 2024, all provinces, except British Columbia and Quebec saw increases quarter over quarter with Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces, Saskatchewan & Manitoba, and British Columbia experiencing 2.9%, 1.0%, -1.0%, 1.4%, 0.8%, -0.5% and respectively.

    overnor Kathy Hochul today announced the completion of The Rise, a 71-unit affordable and supportive housing development in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. The $50 million project includes 47 supportive apartments, a community hub, and rooftop farm. The seven-story building is located on “Site J” of New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Vital Brooklyn Initiative — the State’s comprehensive community development initiative aiming to address social, economic and health disparities in Central Brooklyn. In the past five years, HCR has financed nearly 8,400 affordable homes in Brooklyn. The Rise continues this effort and complements Governor Hochul’s $25 billion five-year housing plan, which is on track to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide.

    “Individuals and families in Brownsville deserve access to housing they can afford and the services that provide the support they need to thrive,” Governor Hochul said. “The Rise builds on our commitment to Central Brooklyn and will provide affordable housing opportunities, social services, and the types of amenities that can strengthen the entire community.”

    Apartments at The Rise are available for households earning up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income. Designed to appeal to families of different sizes, the development features studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. As part of the Vital Brooklyn initiative, The Rise will also bring economic and community development benefits to Brownsville. Programming will be available to building residents and the Brownsville neighborhood in the community hub and will include workshops focused on critical thinking, conflict resolution, health, and women’s empowerment. Using the building’s rooftop farm, residents and members of the surrounding community can also participate in programming such as fresh food cultivation and workforce development in farming.

    The 47 supportive apartments are reserved for formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. On-site supportive services including trauma-informed case management, mental health and substance use services, employment and educational services, life skills, and wellness support groups will be available to eligible tenants.

    The project is developed by Xenolith Partners, LLC. Women’s Prison Association and The Osborne Association are providing onsite supportive services for eligible tenants, Community Capacity Development will provide the community programming, and Project Eats will operate the rooftop farm.

    The Rise is an all-electric building that offers cost-effective amenities to reduce energy consumption, improve health, and build resilience. Energy-efficiency features include solar panels for on-site energy generation and a Variant Refrigerant Flow heating and cooling system that captures and repurposes heat already in the environment. The hot water system utilizes heat pumps, there are electric dryers and cooktops, energy recovery ventilation for improved indoor air quality, and LED lighting. The project was awarded a Buildings of Excellence Award from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

    The project is supported by New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s (HCR) Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program which generated $21 million in equity, $5 million from its Supportive Housing Opportunity Program, $4.5 million from HCR’s Low-Income Housing Trust Fund, and $4 million from its Federal Housing Trust Fund. Additional support includes $10 million from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s (OTDA) Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, nearly $1.3 million from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) New Construction Program, and federal solar energy tax credits that generated $84,000 in equity. The Community Preservation Corporation provided pre-development and other financial support for the project through its Equity Investing platform and has also committed to providing long-term permanent financing. Operating funding for the supportive units is being provided by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative, administered by OTDA, and Project-Based Section 8 vouchers provided by HCR.

    Governor Hochul’s Housing Agenda

    Governor Hochul is committed to addressing New York’s housing crisis and making the State more affordable and more livable for all New Yorkers. As part of the Fiscal Year (FY) 25 Enacted Budget, the Governor secured a landmark agreement to increase New York’s housing supply through new tax incentives for Upstate communities, new incentives and relief from certain state-imposed restrictions to create more housing in New York City, a $500 million capital fund to build up to 15,000 new homes on state-owned property, an additional $600 million in funding to support a variety of housing developments statewide and new protections for renters and homeowners. In addition, as part of the FY23 Enacted Budget, the Governor announced a five-year, $25 billion Housing Plan to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide, including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations, plus the electrification of an additional 50,000 homes. Nearly 60,000 homes have been created or preserved to date.

    The FY25 Enacted Budget also strengthened the Pro-Housing Community Program which the Governor launched in 2023. Pro-Housing certification is now a requirement for localities to access up to $650 million in discretionary funding. Currently, nearly 300 communities have been certified, including the city of New York.

  • MIL-OSI Security: U.S. Attorney Announces Prosecution of Title 50 Charges Following Joint Visit to New Mexico National Defense Area

    ALBUQUERQUE – U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison today announced the filing of 82 new Title 50 charges for unauthorized entry into the newly-designated National Defense Area along New Mexico’s southern border, following a high-level visit with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks.

    The charges mark the first large-scale use of a novel criminal statute targeting unauthorized entry onto federally protected military defense property, a move enabled by the recent transfer of control over a 170-mile stretch of borderland-known as the Roosevelt Reservation-from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Defense. This corridor, now treated as an extension of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Huachuca, is subject to enhanced military patrols and surveillance, with U.S. troops authorized to temporarily detain and transfer individuals to federal law enforcement for prosecution.

    The newly filed Title 50 charges carry potential penalties of up to one year in prison, supplementing existing immigration-related offenses. The Justice Department’s actions underscore a coordinated federal response to border security, leveraging expanded military and prosecutorial authority to deter unlawful crossings.

    “The Department of Justice will work hand in glove with the Department of Defense and Border Patrol to gain 100% operational control of New Mexico’s 170-mile border with Mexico,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison reiterated following the meeting. “Trespassers into the National Defense Area will be Federally prosecuted—no exceptions.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: .50 caliber straw purchaser convicted in relation to firearms destined for Mexico

    HOUSTON – A federal jury has convicted a 49-year-old Houston man of making a false statement in the purchase of firearms and purchasing firearms knowing they were to be exported to Mexico, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

    The jury deliberated for less than 20 minutes before finding John Castellano guilty following a three-day trial. 

    On or about Dec. 16, 2019, Castellano lied to a federal firearms licensed dealer. He falsely claimed he was purchasing two Barrett .50 caliber rifles for himself, each valued at approximately $8,000 each. In reality, they were intended for others and ultimately destined for Mexico.

    The jury heard evidence that Castellano purchased the rifles with approximately $17,000 in cash from Jacinto Zuniga.

    Evidence revealed Castellano had picked up the firearms from a federal firearms licensed dealer with a friend and previously convicted felon.

    The jury also heard he was attempting to obtain additional Barrett .50 caliber rifles before authorities’ interdiction.

    Experts provided testimony regarding the regulations and various licensing requirements necessary for exporting firearms to Mexico. The jury also had the opportunity to view the Barrett .50-caliber rifles Castellano had straw purchased.

    The defense attempted to convince the jury that the accusations were false and that he was wrongfully accused. Castellano took the stand and told the jury the incriminating text messages between him and the codefendant were lies, and that he was just making up a fictional story.  

    They did not believe those claims and found Castellano guilty as charged.

    U.S. District Judge Ewing Werlein presided over the trial and set sentencing for July 25. At that time, Castellano faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.

    Castellano was permitted to remain on bond pending that hearing.

    Zuniga, 44, Houston, previously pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme.  

    The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation with the assistance of Houston Police Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations and Department of State. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Smith and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Stotts are prosecuting the case.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kaine, Van Hollen, Schumer & Padilla to Force Senate Vote Demanding Answers on Trump Administration’s Compliance with Court Orders and El Salvador’s Horrific Human Rights Record

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the lead Democrat on SFRC’s Western Hemisphere panel, together with U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Alex Padilla (D-CA), introduced legislation to require the Trump Administration to produce a report detailing any steps the Administration is taking to ensure compliance with court orders applicable to U.S. citizens or residents wrongfully deported by the U.S. to El Salvador; confirming whether U.S. security assistance has been used to support the illegal detention of U.S. residents; and assessing El Salvador’s human rights record. Companion legislation is being led in the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20).
    Under the legislation, if the Administration fails to produce the report, security assistance to El Salvador would be prohibited by federal law. The legislation is privileged under the Foreign Assistance Act, meaning the Senate will be forced to vote on the measure.
    “Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has rounded up tens of thousands of Salvadorans without due process and jammed them indefinitely into overpopulated torture centers. And now he’s trying to do the same to people living in the United States.     “The Trump Administration has sent numerous people to Salvadoran gulags using a wartime authority and without due process,” said Representative Joaquin Castro. “El Salvador, under President Bukele, has engaged in well-documented human rights abuses.     WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP), (both D-VA) and 40 of their congressional colleagues reintroduced the bicameral Assault Weapons Ban of 2025, legislation that would revive the 1994 nationwide ban on assault weapons two decades after the original ban expired in 2004. This legislation would ban the sale, transfer, manufacture, and import of military-style assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other high-capacity ammunition feeding devices that have repeatedly been used in mass shootings across the nation.
    “Gun violence continues to rock communities across the country over and over without meaningful intervention from lawmakers,” said Warner. “It’s time that we step up and once again put in place this commonsense safeguard to better protect Virginians from these weapons of war.”
    “Everyone in America should be able to live free from the fear of injury or death caused by a firearm,” said Kaine. “I’m proud to reintroduce this commonsense gun safety legislation that will once again put in place this essential safeguard to make Virginia and our nation a safer place for all, and I’ll keep pushing for additional legislation to make our communities safer from gun violence.”
    While the 1994 ban was in place, the United States saw gun massacres decline by 37% and mass shooting fatalities were 70% less likely. When the ban expired, deaths in a gun massacre rose 239%. A ban on assault-style weapons is widely supported by Americans.

    Warner and Kaine have long supported gun violence protection measures. Earlier this month, Kaine introduced the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act and the bipartisan Banning Unlawful Machinegun Parts (BUMP) Act, two pieces of legislation that will help protect communities from gun violence by limiting large capacity ammunition feeding devices and prohibiting the sale of bump stocks, devices that are used to turn semiautomatic weapons into machine guns by increasing their rate of fire. Warner and Kaine have championed the Virginia Plan to Reduce Gun Violence Act, legislation to federally enact a series of commonsense gun violence prevention measures adopted by Virginia since 2020, including provisions to mandate reporting of lost and stolen firearms, prevent children from accessing firearms, and implement a one-handgun-a-month policy.

    UK insurance broker charged with failure to prevent bribery

    The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) today accused a UK insurance broker of failing to prevent international bribery.

    Representatives of United Insurance Brokers Limited (UIBL) were ordered to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court next month.

    The broker is charged with failing to prevent associates from bribing state officials in Ecuador between October 2013 and March 2016.

    The SFO alleges UIBL’s US-based intermediaries for Ecuador paid bribes in return for the awarding of re-insurance contracts worth US$38 million.

    If this case proceeds to a contested trial, it will be the first time that an SFO “failure to prevent bribery” case is heard by a jury.

    UIBL offered re-insurance services which insure against any losses caused by making significant and unexpected payouts for insurance policies.

    This was sold to state insurers covering parts of the Ecuadorian public sector, including the state water and electricity companies.  

    UIBL received a US$6.2 million commission to provide these services, of which US$3 million was allegedly paid to intermediaries.

    The intermediaries are accused of subsequently paying bribes to an Ecuadorian official in exchange for the contracts.

    The SFO remains committed to stamping out international bribery wherever it may occur.

    British companies have a duty to prevent the harm caused by bribery when doing business at home and abroad, to ensure that the UK remains a safe and fair place to do business.

    Representatives of the company will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 7 May to face the charges.

    Province’s GDP Growth Rate Second Highest in Canada

    Today, new figures from Statistics Canada show that Saskatchewan remains a national leader in economic growth. Real GDP data shows Saskatchewan is second among Canadian provinces for growth in 2024. 

    Real GDP rose by 3.4 per cent from 2023 to 2024, well over the national average increase of 1.6 per cent. Saskatchewan’s real GDP value remains at an all-time high of $80.5 billion, beating 2023’s record of $77.9 billion. This is a provincial record.

    “Saskatchewan continues to see record growth within our provincial economy and today’s Statistics Canada data shows more people are choosing to live, work and raise families in our province,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Saskatchewan exports bring food and energy security not only to North America, but around the world. The result of this is more high-paying jobs for Saskatchewan residents, more services and a high quality of life for all who call our province home.” 

    Many sectors contributed to this growth, including construction, up 13.2 per cent, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, up 7.8 per cent and mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction, up 5.6 per cent.

    GDP measures the value of goods and services produced within a prescribed geographic region over a specific period of time. 

    This announcement continues to highlight the strength of the provincial economy. Private capital investment in Saskatchewan increased last year by 17.3 per cent to $14.7 billion, ranking first among provinces. Private capital investment is projected to reach $16.2 billion in 2025, an increase of 10.1 per cent over 2024. This is the second highest anticipated percentage increase among the provinces.

    The Government of Saskatchewan recently unveiled its new Securing the Next Decade of Growth – Saskatchewan’s Investment Attraction Strategy. This strategy combined with Saskatchewan’s trade and investment website, InvestSK.ca, contains helpful information for potential markets and solidifies the province as the best place to do business in Canada.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Three Members of a Prolific Chinese Money Laundering Organization Plead Guilty to Laundering Tens of Millions of Dollars in Drug Proceeds

    Two Chinese nationals and a California man, all members of a prolific Chinese money laundering organization (CMLO), pleaded guilty yesterday to money laundering charges involving drug trafficking proceeds.

    According to court documents, Maoxuan Xia, 29, of China, Shao Neng Lin, 58, of Baldwin Park, California, and Zhou Yu, 42, of China, were members of the CMLO that laundered over $92 million in illicit funds, including proceeds from the importation and distribution of illegal drugs into the United States, primarily through Mexico. Xia was one of the most active members of the Organization, traveling throughout the United States to collect drug trafficking proceeds from U.S.-based drug traffickers and deposit those illicit funds, using both real and fake identities, into shell company bank accounts registered by other members of the CMLO, such as Lin and Yu.

    Xia and Yu each pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy, one count of money laundering to conceal the nature, location, source, ownership, and control of the illicit proceeds, and one count of monetary transactions involving criminally derived property greater than $10,000. Lin pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy, two counts of money laundering to conceal the nature, location, source, ownership, and control of the illicit proceeds, and two counts of monetary transactions involving criminally derived property greater than $10,000. Pursuant to his plea agreement, Xia admitted that he was personally responsible for laundering more than $30 million of illicit funds, including drug trafficking proceeds, in less than two years. Xia further admitted that he knew funds laundered in the conspiracy included drug trafficking proceeds or funds intended to promote drug trafficking. Pursuant to their respective plea agreements, Lin and Yu both admitted that they each received, through the shell company bank accounts that they created and operated for the CMLO, approximately $20 million in illicit funds, including drug trafficking proceeds. Lin and Yu both admitted that the total amount of illicit funds laundered in the conspiracy for which they had actual knowledge and involvement was approximately $40 million.

    The defendants face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each of the conspiracy and money laundering counts and a maximum of 10 years in prison on each of the monetary transactions counts. A federal district court judge will determine their respective sentences after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Chung of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Atlanta Division, and Special Agent in Charge Donald “Trey” Eakins of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Charlotte Field Office made the announcement.

    The DEA Charlotte District Office and the IRS-CI Charlotte Field Office are investigating the case.

    Acting Assistant Deputy Chief Mingda Hang, Acting Deputy Chief Melanie Alsworth, and Trial Attorney Jayce Born of the Justice Department’s Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alfredo De La Rosa and Seth Johnson for the Western District of North Carolina are prosecuting the case.

    This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Critical Epilepsy Drug Now Covered in Saskatchewan

    Saskatchewan residents living with epilepsy will now have another medication available for their treatment. Beginning May 1, the Government of Saskatchewan is adding the anti-seizure medication Xcopri to the Saskatchewan Formulary to treat patients with epilepsy. 

    “Individuals living with epilepsy and the specialists who care for them have been calling for access to this medication. We’re proud to respond to that call,” Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “This drug offers real hope to people struggling with uncontrolled seizures. It could mean fewer hospital visits, fewer surgeries, and a better quality of life.”

    Epilepsy is a chronic disease characterized by seizures. The cause of epilepsy can include infections, genetics, trauma, stroke and tumors.  

    Xcopri is an epilepsy medication that is used along with other medications to manage seizures that are not controlled with other therapies. Approximately 10,500 people in Saskatchewan live with epilepsy. It’s estimated about 100 people could benefit from this medication in the first year of coverage. 

    “XCopri has shown it has the potential to reduce/control seizures, even for a demographic that has historically struggled with seizure control,” Epilepsy Saskatoon President Lori Newman said. “By having the government add XCopri to the Saskatchewan Formulary, tangible hope exists for people living with epilepsy that their doctor now has unimpeded access to prescribe a new medication – one that has the power to be life-changing.”

    Drug funding decisions in Saskatchewan are informed through a rigorous review process that includes medication assessment through Canada’s Drug Agency, the provincial Drug Advisory Committee of Saskatchewan, and manufacturer pricing negotiations with the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA). Saskatchewan is a member of the pCPA and works collaboratively with other provinces and territories to achieve better value for the publicly funded drug plans as well as patients.

    The Saskatchewan Formulary offers a variety of medications that may be appropriate for epilepsy patients. Patients are encouraged to discuss their medication needs with their health care provider. 

    Criteria for coverage of Xcopri is listed on the Saskatchewan Formulary.

    Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma Torres issued the following statement in response to House Republicans pushing forward multiple joint resolutions of disapproval that target California’s landmark environmental policies and public health protections. The resolutions considered this week attempt to undo essential measures aimed at protecting California’s land and reducing air pollution; notably the Inland Empire has some of the worst air quality in the country. 

    “Once again, House Republican lawmakers are unlawfully attacking California’s efforts to lead the nation in fighting for environmental progress and protecting public health. These joint resolutions of disapproval are a blatant attempt to roll back critical environmental protections and funding that not only benefit California but have far-reaching impacts on the well-being of one of our nation’s largest economies,” said Congresswoman Torres.

    “We cannot afford to let Washington dismantle the progress we’ve made in California, whether it’s in protecting our land, water, and air quality, ensuring clean air and water, or protecting our democratic institutions. The American people deserve better than partisan attacks that prioritize corporate interests over the health of our communities and the integrity of our democracy.”

    Both the General Accountability Office (GAO) and the Senate Parliamentarian have ruled that a Congressional Review Act (CRA) veto is not allowed or appropriate waivers made by federal agencies- which is the case in three of the CRA resolutions being considered in the House.   

    Background: The resolutions include:

    • Blocking California’s Clean Truck Regulations and Emission Standards for Heavy-Duty Engines: This resolution would dismantle California’s efforts to reduce emissions from trucks and heavy-duty engines—critical to improving air quality and protecting public health, especially in disadvantaged communities.

    • Rolling Back the Advanced Clean Cars II Program: This program requires automakers to increase the production and sales of zero-emission vehicles, setting pollution standards that ensure a cleaner future for Californians and help the nation achieve climate goals.

    • Void California’s Omnibus Low NOx Regulation: The regulation addresses harmful diesel engine pollution and significantly expands the state’s efforts to transition to zero-emission trucks, a move crucial to improving air quality and reducing harmful pollutants that exacerbate asthma and other respiratory diseases.

    • Nullifying the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species Listing of the San Francisco Bay-Delta Longfin Smelt: This resolution seeks to remove protections for the longfin smelt, a critical species in the Bay-Delta ecosystem, and endanger the delicate balance of the region’s waterways.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Making every visit count: How Federal agencies estimate visitation to our public lands and waters

    Federal lands and waters received almost a billion recreational visits per year in recent years, the equivalent of each person in the United States visiting federal lands and waters almost three times a year. Each year, agencies that manage federal lands and waters estimate how many people visited their recreation sites because visitation data are crucial for outdoor recreation planning, decision-making, and managing resources effectively. For example, visitation estimates can inform what visitor services are offered (like, interpretive programs, emergency services, facilities and bathrooms), where staffing is needed, and where investments to improve infrastructure are most warranted. 

    Social scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey Fort Collins Science Center partnered with researchers from the University of Washington and Department of the Interior to document the approaches agencies commonly use to estimate visitation and review approaches that are less commonly used. 

    Estimating visitation can be a challenging task; it may be straightforward to count visitors to places like museums where every visitor pays an entrance fee, but many public lands and waters are free to visit and have numerous entrance and exit points. Agencies use a variety of different methods to navigate this challenge based on the characteristics and context of different locations. Common methods to estimating visitation across agencies include using sensors that count traffic on roads or trails, direct observation of visitors, visitor surveys, and administrative data such as entrance fees, permits, or trail registers. Often, multiple sources of data are combined to generate the most accurate estimates. 

    This report also reviews recent research into new and emerging data and approaches for estimating visitation. Digital mobility data based on locations of mobile devices and geolocated social media are the most studied new source of information on visitation. While these data have underlying biases, they can be effective for measuring visitation when calibrated using on-the-ground counts.

    The Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act calls for Federal agencies to: report accurate annual visitation data in a consistent manner for each unit of Federal recreational lands and waters in a single reporting system; develop a pilot program for using real-time or predictive data; and advance modeling of recreation use patterns not effectively measured by existing data collection methods. This report is intended to support the implementation of provisions in the EXPLORE Act related to recreation visitation data, as well as provide opportunities to enhance visitation estimation and coordination across federal agencies.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Largest joint immigration operation in Florida history leads to 1,120 criminal alien arrests during weeklong operation

    MIAMI — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with law enforcement partners from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the state of Florida, led a first-of-its-kind statewide operation April 21 to April 26 that netted 1,120 criminal illegal alien arrests — the largest number in a single state in one week in ICE’s history. Sixty-three percent of those arrested had existing criminal arrests or convictions.

    Arrests included 378 criminal illegal aliens with final orders of removal issued by an immigration judge. Officers arrested various violent offenders, gang members, sex offenders, fugitives from justice and those who pose significant public safety threats. Arrests include members of several different notoriously violent foreign terrorist organizations such as MS-13, Tren de Aragua, Brown Pride Aztecas, Barrio Azteca, Surenos (sur-13) and 18th Street Gang.

    The countries of origin of those arrested include the following: 

    • 437 from Guatemala
    • 280 from Mexico
    • 153 from Honduras
    • 48 from Venezuela
    • 24 from El Salvador
    • 178 from elsewhere

    Those arrested who have final orders of removal or returned to the United States illegally after being deported are subject to immediate removal from the country. The remaining aliens are in ICE custody awaiting due process before an immigration judge or pending travel arrangements for removal.

    “Last week’s operational success of arresting more than 1,100 criminal illegal aliens was truly a collaborative whole-of-government effort by our federal, state and local law enforcement partners in Florida,” said ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan. “Every day, our officers take to the streets and put their lives on the line to apprehend and remove dangerous criminal aliens, transnational gang members and foreign fugitives who have illegally entered the U.S. We are united in our determination to restore integrity to our nation’s immigration system and enhance public safety for all Americans.”

    The state of Florida leads the nation with 287(g) partnerships. This force-multiplying program is named for Section 287(g)(1) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes ICE to delegate specified immigration officer functions to state and local law enforcement officials under the agency’s direction and supervision.

    “I’ve insisted that Florida be the tip of the spear when it comes to state support of federal immigration enforcement. The success of Operation Tidal Wave is proof of our commitment,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Florida is proud to work closely with the Trump administration and help deliver on the 2024 mandate from America that our borders be secured and our immigration laws be followed. We will continue to engage in broad interior enforcement efforts. Thank you to DHS, ICE, CBP, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol, and Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Commission, Florida National Guard, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, and everyone involved for your contributions to this effort.”

    “Dangerous criminals have no place in our country. We will apply CBP’s collective intelligence and operational capabilities to target those here illegally who endanger our citizens and the American way of life,” said Miami Sector Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Dinise. “Collaborative enforcement efforts such as Operation Tidal Wave, with our DHS and state of Florida law enforcement partners, leverages each of our unique authorities to protect against threats. We look forward to continuing the vital partnership with the State of Florida as we all work toward our shared goal of keeping our communities safe and our nation secure.”

    During the operation, federal, state and local partners helped arrest criminal illegal aliens around Florida. ICE used field office resources, alongside federal partners, to identify priority targets for enforcement action. Law enforcement partners included ICE Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, the DEA, the ATF and the U.S. Marshals Service.

    The state of Florida, under DeSantis’ direction, provided significant assistance during the statewide operation from multiple agencies.

    In addition, the following sheriff’s offices also provided significant assistance to ICE during the operation: 

    • Alachua County.
    • Baker County.
    • Brandford County.
    • Brevard County.
    • Clay County.
    • Hernando County.
    • Hillsborough County.
    • Indian River County.
    • Orange County.
    • Pinellas County.
    • St. John’s County.
    • Sumter County.
    • Volusia County.

    Many of the criminal aliens arrested during the operation have illegally entered and been removed from the U.S. numerous times and been convicted of multiple criminal offenses. A few of the most egregious examples include:

    • Ciro Ramon Castaneda Perez, a criminal illegal alien from Venezuela, and known member of the violent gang Tren de Aragua, was arrested at his residence in Holly Hill. On April 12, the Port Orange Police Department pulled over Castaneda-Perez for a traffic violation and found cocaine residue and paraphernalia in his vehicle. Castaneda-Perez has a final order of removal issued by an immigration judge.
    • Carlos Eduardo Perez Perez, a criminal illegal alien and suspected associate of the gang Tren de Aragua, was arrested April 25 at the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Tampa field office. On July 19, 2024, Perez was first encountered and arrested by U.S. Border Patrol at a checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, Texas, after he illegally entered the U.S. without parole or inspection. An immigration judge ordered Perez removed to Venezuela Aug. 26, 2024.
    • Rafael Juarez Cabrera, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala and documented MS-13 gang member, was arrested after being convicted of illegal reentry by a previously removed alien. He has been removed three times prior. He will remain in custody pending prosecution for illegal reentry after deportation
    • Luis Melito Gonzalez Arrellanno, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico and active member of the Brown Pride Aztecas gang, was arrested with a criminal history that includes armed carjacking, firing a weapon, fraud and a conviction for illegal reentry after deportation. He has a final order of removal.
    • Aron Isaak Morazan Izaguirre, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, is an active known or suspected terrorist as a member of the 18th Street Gang. Izaguirre is a two-time illegal reentry and will remain in custody pending removal.
    • Miguel Rodriguez Gonzalez, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, is an active member of the Barrio Azteca gang. His criminal history includes assault, burglary, possession of marijuana, fraud and a conviction of illegal reentry after deportation. He will be held in custody pending his removal from the country.

    Today Governor Josh Stein announced that the Dogwood Health Trust, the Duke Endowment, and the State of North Carolina have distributed $55 million to 2,812 small businesses through the Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative. These grants are supporting western North Carolina businesses impacted by Hurricane Helene and bolstering regional economic recovery. More than 7,300 businesses applied.

    “These grants will go a long way in helping western North Carolina’s beloved small business owners keep their doors open after Helene,” said Governor Josh Stein. “But the volume of unfunded applications makes it crystal clear – more help is desperately needed. I’m ready to work with the legislature to deliver support for small businesses that power our mountain economy.”

    “The Dogwood Health Trust is proud of this partnership’s work to support small business owners in western North Carolina,” said Dogwood President and CEO Dr. Susan Mims. “The Dogwood Health Trust created the Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative last fall as part of our larger Helene relief efforts. These businesses are vital to the health of our communities, and we must continue to support them.”

    The Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative, initiated by the Dogwood Health Trust and then expanded by the State of North Carolina and the Duke Endowment, awarded grants of up to $50,000 to small business with an annual revenue of up to $2.5 million. Earlier this week, Governor Stein announced the new $55 million Small Business Infrastructure Grant Program, which directs up to $1 million in grants to local governments to rebuild public infrastructure like sewers and sidewalks, which small businesses rely upon to attract business. Governor Stein’s second Hurricane Helene relief budget proposal will include increased support for small businesses in western North Carolina.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Some ‘Star Wars’ stories have already become reality

    Just 48 short years ago, movie director George Lucas used the phrase “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” as the opening to the first “Star Wars” movie, later labeled “Episode IV: A New Hope.” But at least four important aspects of the “Star Wars” saga are much closer – both in time and space – than Lucas was letting on.

    One, the ability to add blue food coloring to milk, was possible even at the time the first film came out. But in 2024, “Star Wars”-themed blue milk became periodically available in grocery stores.

    And we, an environmental health engineer and a civil engineer, know there are at least three more elements of these ancient, distant Lucas stories that might seem like science fiction but are, in fact, science reality.

    Moisture farming

    In that first movie, “Episode IV,” Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen was a farmer on the planet of Tatooine. He farmed water from air in the middle of a desert.

    It might sound impossible, but it’s exactly what experts discussed at the second International Atmospheric Water Harvesting Summit hosted by Arizona State University in March 2025.

    Each day, a human needs to consume about the equivalent of 0.8 gallons of water (3 liters). With more than 8 billion people living on the planet, that means engineers need to produce nearly 2.6 trillion gallons (10 trillion liters) of clean drinking water every year. Taken globally, rainfall would be enough, but it’s distributed very unevenly – including landing in the oceans, where it immediately becomes too salty to drink safely.

    Deserts, which cover about one-fifth of the Earth’s land area, are home to about 1 billion people.

    Researchers at places such as Berkeley have developed solar-powered systems that can produce clean drinking water from thin air. In general, they use a material that traps water molecules from the air within its structure and then use sunlight to condense that water out of the material and into drinkable liquid. But there is still a ways to go before they are ready for commercial distribution and available to help large numbers of people.

    Researchers can harvest water from air in the desert, in a process powered only by the Sun.

    Space debris

    When the second Death Star was destroyed in “Return of the Jedi,” it made a huge mess, as you would expect when blowing to smithereens an object at least 87 miles across (140 kilometers). But the movie’s mythology helpfully explains a hyperspace wormhole briefly opened, scattering much of the falling debris across the galaxy.

    As best as anyone can tell, a hyperspace wormhole has never appeared near Earth. And even if such a thing existed or happened, humans might not have the technology to chuck all our trash in there anyway. So we’re left with a whole lot of stuff all around us, including in space.

    According to the website Orbiting Now, in late April 2025 there were just over 12,000 active satellites orbiting the planet. All in all, the United States and other space-faring nations are trying to keep track of nearly 50,000 objects orbiting Earth. And there are millions of fragments of space debris too small to be observed or tracked.

    Just as on Earth’s roads, space vehicles crash into each other if traffic gets too congested. But unlike the debris that falls to the road after an Earth crash, all the bits and pieces that break off in a space crash fly away at speeds of several thousand miles per hour (10,000 to 30,000 kph) and can then hit other satellites or spacecraft that cross their paths.

    This accumulation of space debris is creating an increasing problem. With more satellites and spacecraft heading to orbit, and more stuff up there moving around that might hit them, space travel is becoming more like flying the Millennium Falcon through an asteroid field every day.

    Engineers at NASA, the European Space Agency and other space programs are exploring a variety of technologies – including a net, a harpoon and a laser – to remove the more dangerous pieces of space junk and clean up the space environment.

    Dodging obstacles in space is no picnic.

    The Force itself

    To most Earth audiences, the Force was a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together. That is until 1999, when “Episode I: The Phantom Menace” revealed that the Force came from midi-chlorians, a microscopic, sentient life form that lives within every living cell.

    To biologists, midi-chlorians sound suspiciously similar to mitochondria, the powerhouse of our cells.
    The current working hypothesis is that mitochondria emerged from bacteria that lived within cells of other living things. And mitochondria can communicate with other life forms, including bacteria.

    There are many different kinds of mitochondria, and medical professionals are learning how to transplant mitochondria from one cell to another just like they transplant organs from one person’s body to another. Maybe one day a transplant procedure could help people find the light side of the Force and turn away from the dark side.

    The office of Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) announced the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition Saturday, April 19, during a reception and awards program at Mark Arts in Wichita. Every year, the U.S. House of Representatives hosts an Artistic Discovery: Congressional Art Competition for High School Students, which takes place in each congressional district. First-place winners from all districts will have their artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. for about one year. Because of his support for young artists in the 4th Congressional District of Kansas, Rep. Estes also hosted an art exhibit in the district to display and celebrate the talent of all of the participants. The show is up until May 10. This year, the 4th Congressional District had 250 entries from 199 students representing 21 high schools in six different counties.
     
    “The students who participated in this year’s art competition really impressed the judges, with a number of entries receiving recognition and many more that were also notable,” said Rep. Estes. “It will be great to see Melian’s pastel piece in the Capitol complex later this year. Melian received recognition last year for her 3rd place pastel, so it’s especially exciting to see her continue pursuing her passions and honing her skills. I’m grateful for the parents and teachers who are encouraging these students to enter and improve their craft.”
     
    The winner, Melian Miller, a Wichita High School East student, received a cash prize courtesy of Marc and Erin Mason. Craig and Dalene Nelson also gave cash prizes to the second and third place winners. Twenty-eight other pieces received Honorable Mentions.

The nominees considered by the Committee today include Mr. Tristan Abbey for Energy Department Administrator of the Energy Information Agency, Ms. Leslie Beyer for Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Lands and Mineral Management, Mr. Theodore J. Garrish for Energy Department Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, and Dr. Andrea Travnicek for Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Water and Science.
    During his opening remarks, Heinrich sought commitments from the nominees to follow the law as enacted by Congress and support and defend — rather than demolish — the offices and programs entrusted to their oversight, especially amid unprecedented attacks on career federal workers.

    Heinrich began his line of questioning by asking Leslie Beyer, nominee for Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Lands and Mineral Management, about her support of divesting from public lands, “As Assistant Secretary you will oversee management of more than 245 million acres of public land. This land belongs to all Americans— including every single one of my constituents. Americans highly value their ability to access these lands for hunting, fishing, and other recreational uses. Do you support the large-scale divestment of our public lands?”
    Ms. Beyer avoided directly answering whether or not she supports public lands divestment, “Sir, only Congress has the ability to dispose of any public lands. But I believe that our public lands have multiple use mandates, and they can be used for energy production, recreation, any number of other uses, for the benefit of all Americans.”
    Heinrich turned to Dr. Andrea Travnicek to clarify the Trump Administration’s intentions with recent actions decreasing the timeline of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews, which will inevitably harm meaningful consultations with Tribal nations, “Dr. Travnicek, you’ve been on staff for several months now and I appreciate many of our conversations, but [your role] gives you specific insights in the decisions that have already been made in the Department. The new guidance for NEPA projects that the Secretary announced for energy projects does not make any mention of Tribal consultation. However, it requires all reviews to be done within 14-28 days. I have personally never seen meaningful Tribal consultation completed in that time frame. My question is: Is the Administration proposing to eliminate Tribal consultation for these projects?”
    Dr. Travnicek responded, “Thank you Senator Heinrich and I appreciate the conversations that we have had already. So, we know that there’s been a lot of conversations for a long tome related to trying to streamline the permitting processes, right? I think we’ve all been frustrated by that. We’ve seen some of these discussions here within this Committee as well. So, we are really just trying to figure out how we can move forward while still meeting the different requirements as well. We know that the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was mentioned in there, and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Also, we know that we will have to engage with Tribes. So, at the same time, how do we get permits out the door, get the infrastructure in place, develop the resources we need? So, it’s going to be trying to work on all the above, working with ESA, NHPA, and also engaging with the Tribes.”
    Heinrich pushed back, “As someone who strongly supported permitting reform, and a majority of members on this Committee did— I think we largely support getting to yes or no faster. I really want to urge you to make sure that the Tribal consultation process is not a ‘check the box’ exercise, and that it is meaningful.”
    Heinrich returned to questioning Beyer to address arbitrary stop work orders on permitted projects and the job losses it is creating, “Let me quote back something that you said a few minutes ago: ‘If our companies can’t get permits, we will be behind.’ I agree with that sentiment. Two weeks ago, Secretary Burgum sent a letter to the Acting Director of OEM, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, ordering an unprecedented stop work order to Equinor’s empire wind project off the coast of New York. That’s a fully permitted project. It has undergone rigorous review. It’s already under construction. And it would power half a million homes. Cancelling this project is a job killer for the skilled trades. And my concern is that it will squash any faith that the private sector has in the federal permitting process. If we do this to one project of one energy type, you can do it to another of a different energy type. So, if fully permitted projects are subjected to arbitrary stop work orders, how can we expect the private sector to commit capital to permit those large, expensive projects?”
    Beyer replied, “Senator, thank you for that question. As you know, I have not been confirmed so I did not participate in that decision making-”
    Heinrich redirected her answer, “Speak to the larger issue. Not to the specificity of that issue.”
    Beyer answered, “Right. We need all forms of energy that we can get our hands on. There is a premium to secure, reliable, and affordable energy. I’m from Texas; we have a lot of wind energy there. I appreciate that it’s additive. But there is a premium to secure, affordable, and reliable energy that is not weather dependent in my view. And I will adhere to the guidance of the Secretary if I am confirmed.”
    Heinrich clarified her answer, “In your view, should permitting be transparent and predictable?”
    Beyer responded, “Yes sir.”
    Heinrich wrapped his questions, “Thank you.”

    WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich co-sponsored the Tax Cut for Workers Act, legislation to give thousands of New Mexicans a much-needed tax break. The bill would make permanent the American Rescue Plan Act’s expansions of the Earned IncomeTax Credit (EITC), continuing one of the largest-ever tax cuts for the middle class.
    The American Rescue Plan Act, which Heinrich helped pass into law, made several critical expansions of the EITC, including nearly tripling the maximum EITC benefit for workers without children from roughly $540 to roughly $1,500 and raising the income limit from about $16,000 to $21,000 for single filers and from about $22,000 to $27,000 for married filers. It also made individuals aged 19 to 24 and 65 and older newly eligible for the credit. While the American Rescue Plan’s EITC provisions expired the end of 2021, they had a significant impact, increasing disposable income among America’s working families.
    “With the cost of everything from coffee to electricity out of control thanks to Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s chaos, New Mexico families need relief more than ever. I’m proud to support this legislation to cut taxes for workers so that they can keep more of their hard-earned money. This is what fighting for families – not billionaires – looks like,” said Heinrich.
    The Tax Cut for Workers Act will cut taxes for 111,000 New Mexicans by expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to workers without children. The bill also extends eligibility for the tax cut to workers under the age of 25 and over the age of 64.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Shaheen, Grassley Highlight National Fentanyl Awareness Day

    (Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced a resolution designating April 29, 2025, as “National Fentanyl Awareness Day” to raise awareness about the dangers fentanyl poses to Americans and their families. The resolution was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate.
    “There’s always more we can and should be doing to address the substance use disorder crisis and prevent more Granite Staters from dying of drug overdoses,” said Senator Shaheen. “Our resolution memorializes the lives that have been lost to this epidemic and underscores the need to raise awareness and commit more resources to combating the flow of fentanyl into our communities.”
    “Fentanyl overdoses claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans last year, many of whom suffered from accidental poisonings after taking counterfeit prescription pills. President Trump has taken strong action to stem the flow of fentanyl pills. Additionally, Congress must act to hold corporations accountable for their role in the illicit drug trade,” Grassley said. “Our resolution demonstrates continuing resolve to put an end to America’s fentanyl epidemic.”

    Senator Shaheen has led efforts to address the substance use disorder epidemic in the Granite State. Earlier this month, Shaheen led the New Hampshire Congressional delegation in calling on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to immediately restore more than $80 million in federal funding cut from HHS that New Hampshire relies on to help communities address the substance use disorder and mental health crises. Shaheen recently held a roundtable at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Concord to highlight the consequences of these cuts. Shaheen also recently introduced the bipartisan Keeping Drugs Out of Schools Act with Senator Grassley that would help prevent youth opioid use and overdoses by establishing a new grant program that allows current or former Drug-Free Communities (DFC) coalitions to partner with schools to provide resources educating students about the dangers of synthetic opioids.

    Earlier this month, Gov. Pillen joined a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from a bipartisan group of governors asking Administrator Lee Zeldin to issue an emergency waiver to help drivers in the summer. 

    Nebraska is one of several Midwest states approved to sell E15 year-round starting April 28. Establishing a nationwide waiver will help provide a stable supply of fuel and stem shortages and price hikes during the busy summer driving season.

    . Pillen Issues New Executive Order on Burn Ban

    LINCOLN, NE – Governor Jim Pillen has issued a new executive order stipulating that central and western Nebraska remain under a burn ban. Conditions in that half of the state are still very dry. Burning is prohibited through midnight May 10 due to the potential wildfire risk.

    Last week, Gov. Pillen ordered a burn ban across Nebraska, after a prescribed fire got out of control in Plum Creek. The new order, effective today, specifies the border where burning is still not permitted. The line runs south along U.S. Highway 81 from the South Dakota border to Highway 92. The line then goes west to U.S. Highway 281 and runs south to the Kansas border. It should be noted that counties may be split when it comes to areas where burning is still prohibited.

    Burning outside of that area is permitted, except when a red flag warning is issued by the National Weather Service and for the duration of the warning.
