  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Ogles Fights to Classify First English Bible Printed in North America as a Historical Document of Congress

    Source:

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Andy Ogles (TN-05) introduced a resolution recommending that the Robert Aitken Bible be recognized as a historical document of the United States Congress. This copy of the Holy Scriptures was the first known English-language Bible to be printed in North America.

“Without the Bible, America would not exist. The revealed Word of God—found in both the Old and New Testaments—is the foundation of our politics and culture. Our Founders clearly understood that America’s survival depends on the people’s strong belief in and practice of the Scriptures,” said Congressman Ogles. “There’s no question that America needs to return to the Bible. Recognizing the Aikten Bible as an official historical document of the U.S. Congress is in our national interest and a great way to close out National Faith Month.”

“Congressman Ogles’ resolution to recognize the Aitken Bible as a historical document of the United States Congress is a powerful and necessary acknowledgment of our nation’s deep-rooted Christian heritage. The Aitken Bible, as the first English-language Bible printed in North America and endorsed by Congress in 1782, stands as a testament to the foundational role that faith has played in shaping our country. This resolution is a key step in designating April as Faith Month, honoring the spiritual legacy that continues to guide us. We wholeheartedly endorse this resolution and call on our leaders to steadfastly uphold the faith that forged this nation, ensuring it remains a guiding light for generations to come.” –Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC)

“My husband exemplified the true meaning of public service, dedicating his life each day to protecting his community. • MIL-OSI USA: Investing in America’s Workforce: “Apprenticeship Infrastructure Tax Credit Act of 2025” Introduced to Combat Workforce Shortages in Critical Industries

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jake Ellzey (Texas, 6)

Washington, D.C. — In response to the nation’s escalating labor shortages, particularly in critical infrastructure sectors, Representative Jake Ellzey (TX-6) will formally introduce the Apprenticeship Infrastructure Tax Credit Act of 2025 in the coming days. This landmark legislation offers a business-centered solution to America’s growing workforce challenges by incentivizing investments in registered apprenticeship programs.

Currently, the U.S. faces 7.2 million job openings, with critical sectors like construction, manufacturing, and energy grappling with significant workforce shortages. By investing in our Nation’s workforce, America will experience unprecedented economic growth and prosperity resulting in energy independence.

The “Apprenticeship Infrastructure Tax Credit Act of 2025” proposes a $3,000 annual tax credit to employers for hiring and retaining registered apprentices in key occupations critical to our nation’s infrastructure, with an enhanced credit of $6,000 for members of the national guard and reserve components of the Armed Forces, recently separated veterans, transitioning service members, and their spouses.

Businesses will be able to claim these credits for up to two years per apprentice retained, recognizing employers’ long-term investment in their workforce. A $5 billion volume cap over ten years ensures the program remains fiscally responsible while encouraging the expansion of registered apprenticeships.

“This bill is about rebuilding the American workforce from the ground up,” said Congressman Jake Ellzey. “We’ve got job openings in critical industries and a generation of hardworking Americans ready to step in—they just need the training and opportunity. By rewarding businesses that invest in apprenticeships, especially for our veterans and transitioning service members, we’re strengthening our infrastructure, supporting our communities, and preparing the next generation to lead.”

In conjunction with National Apprenticeship Day on April 30, 2025, the introduction of this legislation reinforces bipartisan efforts to strengthen America’s skilled workforce. It also aligns with the President’s recent Executive Order on Preparing Americans for High-Paying, Skilled Trade Jobs of the Future, which emphasizes expanding access to registered apprenticeship programs as a critical component to equip American workers to produce world-class products and implement world-leading technologies. The legislation responds to Texas Governor Abbott’s February 2, 2025, announcement “Expanding Career Training as an Emergency Item,” addressing workforce challenges facing the state.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Huffman Re-Introduces Bill to Protect Health Care Consumers from Predatory Practices

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

    April 30, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) re-introduced legislation to protect consumers from Health Care Sharing Ministries’ deceptive practices and expand access to accurate information about health coverage options. The Health Care Sharing Transparency Act would help ensure consumers receive clear and truthful information before enrolling in a health share plan. By holding Health Care Sharing Ministries – also known as Health Share plans – accountable for inaccurate or untimely disclosures and by ensuring providers offer clear information regarding care, this bill helps address some of the dangerous health care practices plaguing consumers across the country.

“Health Care Sharing Ministries prey on people in search of medical coverage, leading them to purchase inadequate medical coverage when they may need it most,” said Rep. Huffman. “Through deceptive marketing tactics and overt appeals to religion, certain providers lure consumers into purchasing plans that can leave patients without the care they need or lead them into deep medical debt. We need to combat these unethical tactics with serious federal action. My legislation would help protect consumers from Health Share plans’ predatory practices and ensure consumers have access to clear, accurate information about their health care options when making important decisions about coverage for themselves and their loved ones. As more and more Americans fall victim to misleading and unregulated Health Care Sharing Ministries, it’s more important than ever that we respond with proper reform.”

Health Share Caring Ministries are a limited form of health coverage that require members – who must share a common set of religious or ethical beliefs – to submit monthly payments to cover the qualified expenses of other members. Health Share plans do not have to comply with the consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act, provide limited benefits for their members, and do not guarantee payment for medical claims. Recent data shows Health Share plans deem only half of members’ health expenses eligible for reimbursement. They also exclude coverage altogether for services such as abortions, contraception, mental health, substance use disorders, chronic conditions, certain preexisting conditions, and even maternity care.

With more for-profit administrators taking advantage of loopholes to market Health Share plans to broader audiences through deceptive practices, roughly 1.7 million Americans have now enrolled in one of these plans and are at serious risk of being denied necessary treatments and services.

The Health Share Transparency Act would:

    • Empower consumers with the knowledge to distinguish between comprehensive, regulated health insurance products and Health Shares by requiring Health Shares to disclose clear information during the enrollment process.
    • Provide new data for regulators to assess the threat Health Shares pose to public health – including rates of service denials, enrollment, service area, average out of pocket expenses for Health Share Members, and the contents of complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
    • Ensure health insurance brokers selling Health Shares inform consumers if they are eligible for better, more comprehensive forms of health coverage – including the ACA, Medicaid, or Medicare – and accurately describe the scope of benefits provided by Health Shares.

“We know that quality health insurance is essential for cancer patients. But too often, people – including cancer patients – enroll in a health sharing ministry, thinking they are covered, only to find out later that they can’t access the care they need. We applaud Rep. Huffman for introducing this important legislation which will help us learn more about health coverage that frequently leaves patients exposed to both physical and financial harm,” said Dr. Gwen Nichols, Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“FFRF Action Fund strongly supports the Health Share Transparency Act, and we thank Rep. Jared Huffman for reintroducing this vital legislation and making this bill a priority for the Congressional Freethought Caucus. Access to health care should never be conditioned on someone’s religious belief — yet healthcare sharing ministries routinely exploit religious exemptions to avoid accountability while misleading consumers. This bill is a crucial step toward protecting the public and upholding the separation of state and church,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, President of FFRF Action Fund.

“Everyone deserves health care coverage that is comprehensive and transparent about its policies, and unfortunately health care sharing ministries can’t offer either,” said Fish Stark, Executive Director of the American Humanist Association. “Too often, health care sharing ministries’ deceptive practices leave American families in unanticipated medical debt with nowhere to turn for relief–all in the name of religion. This issue demands federal attention. We are proud to throw our full support behind the Health Share Transparency Act, and we applaud Congressman Huffman for his leadership in shepherding forward this critical legislation.”

The bill is endorsed by AiArthritis, AIDS Institute, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Lung Association, American Humanist Association, Arthritis Foundation, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, CancerCare, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, Center for Freethought Equality, Epilepsy Foundation of America, FFRF Action Fund, Hemophilia Federation of America, Immune Deficiency Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship, National Health Council, National Patient Advocate Foundation, National Psoriasis Foundation, Secular Coalition for America, and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Cosponsors include Representatives Jamie Raskin, Sean Casten, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Rashida Tlaib, Mark Pocan, Seth Moulton, Steve Cohen, Jan Schakowsky, and Maxwell Frost.

  • MIL-OSI USA: News 04/30/2025 Blackburn Launches Inquiry with Tech Companies on Efforts to Protect Kids Online Following Decline in Reports to CyberTipline

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) sent letters to Google, Microsoft, Discord, and X regarding the puzzling and alarming decrease in reports of child sexual abuse material, online enticement, and child sex trafficking submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) CyberTipline in 2024.

Last year, Senator Blackburn’s REPORT Act was signed into law, requiring platforms to submit reports of online enticement and child sex trafficking to the CyberTipline. These reports are crucial to law enforcement’s investigations of online child exploitation.

Reported Incidents of Suspected Child Exploitation by Several Tech Companies Have Notably and Concerningly Dropped

“The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) CyberTipline is the preeminent online mechanism for members of the public and electronic service providers to report incidents of suspected child exploitation. The CyberTipline has received hundreds of millions of reports of online child sexual exploitation, and federal law requires online platforms to report known incidents of child sexual abuse material (child pornography), online enticement and child sex trafficking to NCMEC. Despite this important legal obligation, there has been a notable drop in reports to the CyberTipline from several platforms.”

Blackburn’s REPORT Act Requires Online Platforms to Report Instances of Child Sex Trafficking

“Last year, my bipartisan legislation—the Revising Existing Procedures on Reporting via Technology (REPORT) Act… was signed into law. This critical bill supports NCMEC in its core mission to protect our children online and assists law enforcement in their investigative efforts. Importantly, the law closed a gap in federal child exploitation laws by mandating that online platforms—including yours—report instances of child sex trafficking and enticement, which was not previously required under federal law. To ensure compliance with this requirement, the REPORT Act also increases the maximum fines for providers who knowingly and willfully fail to submit these reports to NCMEC.”

Tech Companies Must Fulfill Legal Obligation to Report Heinous Crimes Against Children

“Despite these requirements, recent testimony by NCMEC’s President and CEO to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism and data provided by NCMEC indicates that there has been a sharp decline in the number of reports that Google, [Discord, Microsoft, and X have] submitted to the CyberTipline since the passage of the REPORT Act… This notable decrease in reports to NCMEC is both puzzling and deeply troubling. It is crucial that your company fulfill its legal obligations to report these heinous crimes that occur on your platform. Our children deserve nothing less.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kennedy, Blumenthal champion bipartisan bill to protect animals, penalize abusers

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator John Kennedy (Louisiana)

WASHINGTON – Sens. John Kennedy (R-La.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today reintroduced the Better Collaboration, Accountability, and Regulatory Enforcement (CARE) for Animals Act to protect livestock and other animals from abuse by strengthening law enforcement’s ability to penalize abusers.

“Far too often, researchers, breeders and dealers who mistreat animals get away with their crimes. I’m proud to help introduce the Better CARE for Animals Act to make sure law enforcement has the authority to rescue innocent creatures from dangerous environments and punish people who have a hand in the mishandling of animals,” said Kennedy.

“Our bipartisan, bicameral measure protects animals from mistreatment and neglect by holding bad actors accountable for their abuse. Civil penalties and suspensions of abusers’ licenses will go a long way in strengthening Animal Welfare Act enforcement and keeping vulnerable animals out of harm’s way,” said Blumenthal.

The Better CARE for Animals Act would:

    • Strengthen the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) ability to enforce the Animal Welfare Act by clarifying that the DOJ has the same authority that the U.S. Department of Agriculture wields under the Animal Welfare Act, including the ability to seek license suspensions, revocations and civil penalties.
    • Expand on the Animal Welfare Act by granting the DOJ forfeiture authority to seize and remove animals experiencing harmful treatment.

Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.), Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) and Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) introduced the companion bill in the House of Representatives.

“I’m proud to support the bipartisan and bicameral Better CARE for Animals Act which will hold abusers accountable for their mistreatment of innocent animals. Millions of animals have already suffered, and we must ensure the U.S. Department of Justice has the tools it needs to crack down on those responsible—to protect the welfare of animals and prevent future abuse,” said Malliotakis.

“The Better CARE for Animals Act provides the Justice Department with the necessary authority to combat animal abuse, making them an equal partner to the USDA. As co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, I am proud to join my colleagues in improving enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act,” said Quigley.

“The Better CARE for Animals Act provides for important animal protections, encourages stronger collaboration between departments, and empowers our law enforcement to combat abusers. As a member of the Animal Protection Caucus, I’m proud to support this legislation and advocate for the better treatment of innocent animals,” said Reschenthaler.

“No animal should suffer because bad actors know they can get away with it. I’m proud to help introduce this bipartisan bill to ensure stronger enforcement and greater accountability for those who abuse animals. The Better CARE for Animals Act gives us the tools we need to support more humane treatment across the country,” said Davids.

The Humane World Action Fund supports the Better CARE for Animals Act.

“For too long, derelict dog breeders, subpar research facilities, and roadside zoos that make a mockery of animals have put profits over animals’ care and wellbeing by exploiting holes in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s enforcement of the law. The reintroduction of the Better CARE for Animals Act will give the Department of Justice tools to crack down on scofflaws harming animals and provide USDA better support. No animal deserves to be sacrificed due to a critical lack of enforcement. We call on Congress to pass the bill now to create a new era of better care for animals,” said Sara Amundson, president of the Humane World Action Fund.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Luján Applauds Committee Passage of Bipartisan Bill to Combat Online Scams, Protect Consumers in the Online Ticket Marketplace

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-New Mexico)

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, applauded committee passage of his bipartisan bill that would better protect consumers in the online ticket marketplace. Senator Luján’s bipartisan Mitigating Automated Internet Networks for (MAIN) Event Ticketing Act, which he introduced with U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), passed in a markup in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

“Today, we are one step closer to ensure Americans can enjoy live entertainment without the fear of being scammed,” said Senator Luján. “Far too many Americans face excessive price-gouging for tickets from online bots and resellers. That’s why I partnered with Senator Blackburn to advance our MAIN Event Ticketing Act which will strengthen protections for consumers and artists from scammers. Now, I urge the full Senate to take up our legislation and pass this bipartisan bill to better protect consumers.”

“As a cultural institution dedicated to making the performing arts accessible to all, the Santa Fe Opera applauds this bipartisan effort to better combat and enforce unfair ticketing practices and protect consumers and artists from exploitation,” said Santa Fe Opera General Director Robert K. Meya. “The MAIN Event Ticketing Act addresses critical challenges, ensuring that access to live performances remains fair and equitable to all audiences. We are grateful for Senator Luján and Senator Blackburn’s leadership on this important issue and fully support their efforts to enhance transparency and fairness in the online ticket marketplace.”

“We are fully behind this legislation,” said Lensic 360 Director Jamie Lenfestey. “Enforcement of the existing law is a great approach. In high sales season we can see as many as 96,000 bot hits on our sales website daily. Any efforts in enhancing consumer protection and helping promoters and presenters best engage their audiences directly much needed step in the right direction.”

“As a small venue owner, the health of my business relies heavily on food, beverage, and merchandise sales to complement ticket revenue. When bots and scalpers purchase tickets en masse, it not only drives up prices but also prevents true fans from attending events. This results in empty seats at my venue, leading to a significant loss—up to 75% of my projected revenue from concessions and merchandise sales,” said Jayson Wylie, President and CEO of Taos Mesa Brewing and Musich Entertainment.

Specifically, the MAIN Event Ticketing Act would:

    • Create reporting requirements whereby online ticket sellers have to report successful bot attacks to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC);
    • Create a complaint database so consumers can also share their experiences with the FTC, which in turn is required to share the information with state attorneys general;
    • Enact data security requirements for online ticket sellers and requires the sharing of information between the FTC and law enforcement; and
    • Require a report to Congress on BOTS enforcement.

This legislation is endorsed by the Recording Academy, Recording Industry Association of America, Live Nation Entertainment, and the National Independent Venue Association.

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (Indiana 09)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the House of Representatives passed the Rural Broadband Protection Act of 2025, led by Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN-09) to strengthen transparency and accountability in federal broadband programs.

The bill, which passed unanimously by voice vote, ensures that taxpayer dollars invested in rural broadband projects reach the communities that need them most. It also guarantees that providers selected for funding are capable of delivering reliable, high-speed internet access.

“Across Indiana and throughout rural America, families, farmers, students, and small business owners are still struggling with slow or unreliable internet access,” said Rep. Houchin. “That’s not just an inconvenience — it’s a barrier to opportunity, education, healthcare, and economic growth. When Congress invests in rural broadband, we must make sure those dollars are reaching the communities they’re meant to serve.”

The legislation directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a formal vetting process for applicants seeking broadband funding through the Universal Service Fund’s high-cost programs. Providers will be evaluated based on their experience, technical capability, and demonstrated ability to deploy broadband infrastructure efficiently and effectively.

The Rural Broadband Protection Act now advances to the Senate for further consideration.

    Source:

Congressman Russell Fry (SC-07) Introduces House Bill to Expand Nationwide Background Checks for Contractors Working with Children

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Russell Fry (SC-07) introduced the Comprehensive Health & Integrity in Licensing and Documentation Act (CHILD Act) of 2025, along with Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL). This bill ensures that all individuals with unsupervised access to children— whether full-time employees or independent contractors—are eligible for nationwide background checks.

The CHILD Act of 2025 aims to close a dangerous loophole created by the Child Protection Improvements Act of 2018, which inadvertently limited access to FBI background checks for contractors working in schools and other child-focused settings.

The National Child Protection Act (NCPA) of 1993 encouraged states to use federal background checks for people working with vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, or those with disabilities. In 2018, a law was introduced that narrowed who could be checked, leaving out many contractors—including those working directly with kids. The CHILD Act of 2025 fixes this by allowing schools, afterschool programs, and similar organizations to run full federal background checks on anyone, including contractors, who may have access to children and vulnerable groups.

In South Carolina, independent contractors who work with children are typically required to pass FBI and SLED background checks. However, some states lack the NCPA statute, and contractors can’t directly access the federal system unless they work through a state agency or local school district—leading to confusion, inconsistency, and potential risk. Other states have even weaker protections, with some relying only on name-based checks or allowing individual school districts to decide for themselves.

“This is about consistency and accountability,” said Congressman Fry. “Parents shouldn’t have to wonder if individuals who have unsupervised contact with their kids, such as after-school tutors, nurses, school bus drivers, transportation providers, or other contracted personnel, have been fully vetted or not. The CHILD Act would fix this loophole and provide parents with peace of mind and students with a safe environment.”

“Parents shouldn’t have any question that the teachers, staff, and other personnel taking care of their kids at school have been thoroughly vetted,” said Congressman Moskowitz. “That’s why I’m helping lead the CHILD Act, a bipartisan bill to fix an oversight in the law and ensure contractors who work with kids are subject to nationwide background checks. It’s the right thing to do for our kids and a commonsense fix to help keep our schools safe.”

This is the House companion bill to legislation introduced in the Senate by the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-IL).

“Parents should feel more confident that every individual who works with their children has been properly and thoroughly vetted,” said Senator Grassley. “My bipartisan legislation with Senator Durbin would amend the Child Protection Improvements Act to help ensure all child care workers, including contractors, undergo nationwide background checks,” Grassley said. “Our legislative fix will help keep kids safe and give parents greater peace of mind.”

“When parents drop their kids off at school, they shouldn’t have to worry if their children are safe in the care of the school’s faculty,” said Senator Durbin. “While the Child Protection Improvements Act was passed with the intent of keeping children safe, it created an inadvertent complication in securing nationwide background checks for all personnel with unsupervised access to children, namely contractors hired by schools. Schools often rely on contractors for a number of services geared toward children, including providing safe transportation. Today, I’m introducing bipartisan legislation with Senator Grassley to correct the current patchwork approach to securing nationwide background checks for those who work with children.”

The CHILD Act of 2025 is supported by HopSkipDrive, the National District Attorneys Association, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Student Transportation & Education Equity, Roundtable, Parents Helping Parents, Inc., National Diversity Coalition, RaisingHOPE, Inc., National Center on Adoption and Permanency, and Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE).

“Safety has always been, and will always be, our top priority at HopSkipDrive and background checks are an integral component of our 15-step certification process,” said Joanna McFarland, Co-Founder and CEO of HopSkipDrive. “We are proud to support the bipartisan CHILD Act to amend the National Child Protection Act and enhance access to safe, reliable student transportation. This crucial amendment will help ensure the highest standards of safety are met nationwide, and we extend our gratitude to the bill sponsors for their leadership on this important issue.”

“NDAA is happy to support the CHILD Act of 2025, which safeguards our most vulnerable populations by allowing businesses and organizations to conduct thorough background checks of individuals that are under contract with a qualified entity,” said Nelson Bunn, Executive Director of the National District Attorneys Association.

The supporting organizations also submitted this letter.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Clyde’s CRA to Overturn Costly Biden-Era Energy Standards Passes Senate

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Andrew S. Clyde (R-GA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) released the following statement after his Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval, H.J.Res. 42, passed the Senate by a vote of 52-46. The resolution, which passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support last month, rescinds the Biden-Harris Administration’s final rule that put additional costs and red tape on appliance manufacturers, with consumers bearing the ultimate cost.

“I applaud the Senate for passing my commonsense resolution to reverse Biden’s DOE energy efficiency standards that place needless red tape on manufacturers, limit consumer choice, and increase prices for hardworking Americans,” said Clyde. “Both consumers and manufacturers are sick and tired of Washington bureaucrats raising costs and stifling innovation through unnecessary mandates. Thankfully, Congress is taking critical steps to repeal harmful regulations that the Biden-Harris Administration forced on our country. I look forward to H.J.Res. 42 arriving on President Trump’s desk for his signature so we can overturn yet another burdensome Biden-era rule for the American people.”

    Background

On October 9th, 2024, the Biden-Harris Department of Energy finalized certification, labeling, and enforcement provisions for various consumer products and commercial equipment. The rule, entitled “Energy Conservation Program for Appliance Standards: Certification Requirements, Labeling Requirements, and Enforcement Provisions for Certain Consumer Products and Commercial Equipment,” amended or created new requirements for 20 different products, including dishwashers, central AC and heat pumps, clothes washers, and more.

On March 3rd, 2025, the Office of Management and Budget issued a Statement of Administration Policy in support of H.J.Res. 42.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ernst Works to Expand Military Recruitment

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA)

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a combat veteran, introduced the Service Enlistment and Recruitment of Valuable Engagement (SERVE) Act to enhance military recruitment by promoting the benefits of service and expanding access for high school students. Representatives Jen Kiggans (R-Va.), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), and Lance Gooden (R-Texas) are leading this bipartisan effort in the House of Representatives.
After reports that Army recruitment is making historic gains this year, the legislators are working to build on that progress and keep numbers up across the service branches.
“For me, choosing to serve our country opened the door for the American Dream, allowed me to afford college, and paved the way for a life committed to service,” said Senator Joni Ernst, a combat veteran who served in the military for 23 years. “By increasing avenues to the benefits and pathways of a career in the military, we can unlock even more opportunities and brighter futures for our next generation. The call to service is loud and clear, and through the SERVE Act, our nation can bolster recruitment efforts and build the most lethal, efficient, and effective force in the world.”
“America’s military is only as strong as the young men and women who step forward to serve,” said Rep. Kiggans. “Right now, many students aren’t being provided information about the amazing opportunities and experiences military service can offer. The SERVE Act is about turning that around by reconnecting our youth with a powerful call to service and opening doors to leadership, education, and purpose. This bipartisan, bicameral bill sends a clear message that we believe in our next generation, and we’re ready to invest in their future and the future security of our nation.”
“As someone who has proudly served in uniform, I understand the transformative power of military service. The SERVE Act will ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to learn about the benefits and responsibilities of serving our nation. By enhancing access to military recruiters and expanding programs like JROTC, we’re not only strengthening our armed forces but also investing in the leadership potential of our youth. This bipartisan effort reflects our commitment to national security and to providing young Americans with pathways to personal and professional growth,” said Rep. Houlahan.
“The SERVE Act restores a culture of service and ensures that every young American can understand the benefits of military life. By giving recruiters meaningful access to our schools, we strengthen national security and give students a shot at purpose, higher education, and a future filled with opportunity,” said Rep. Gooden.
    Specifically, the SERVE Act:

Increases recruiter access in high schools,
Expands opportunities for students to get involved in JROTC even if they don’t have a program housed at their high school,
Incentivizes schools by designating those with military enlistment rates above the state average as “HERO schools,”
Supports pathways towards a military career by prioritizing graduates from high-enlistment schools for service academies, and
Creates a “National Week of Military Recruitment” to further promote and engage on the benefits of military service.

    Background:
Ernst has worked to support our military men and women receive the benefits they have earned, including by exposing that the Biden administration’s student loan “cancellation” undermined G.I. benefits earned from service, holding the VA accountable for misusing taxpayer dollars, stopping Big Tech from shadow banning military recruitment content, and ensuring junior servicemembers receive proportional pay raises to strengthen our nation’s fighting force.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murphy, Blumenthal, 39 Colleagues Reintroduce Assault Weapons Ban

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy

    April 30, 2025

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Wednesday joined 39 of their Senate colleagues in reintroducing the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025, legislation to revive a nationwide ban on assault weapons two decades after the original ban expired. The bill would ban the sale, transfer, manufacture, and import of military-style assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other high-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

While the 1994 ban was in place, the United States saw gun massacres decline by 37% and mass shooting fatalities were 70% less likely. When the ban expired, deaths in a gun massacre rose 239%. A ban on assault-style weapons is not only common-sense legislation, it’s widely supported by Americans, and Congress has failed to keep up with the American people on this issue.

“Assault weapons are designed for one thing: to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. These are weapons of war that have no place in our communities, and it’s long past time we treated them that way. A majority of Americans support an assault weapons ban, and it’s time for Republicans to get on board and pass this bill before more lives are lost,” said Murphy.

“Assault weapons have only one practical purpose – to slaughter human beings. These military-style combat weapons are designed to maximize death and destruction. No self-respecting hunter uses one. Assault weapons have brought bloodshed and carnage to our streets and our schools. Guns don’t respect state boundaries, which is why we need a national solution to restricting the ownership and use of the mass shooter’s weapon of choice,” said Blumenthal.

Murphy and Blumenthal joined gun safety advocates and organizations from across the nation earlier in the day for a press conference introducing the legislation.

U.S. Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawai’i), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.), Edward Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) also co-sponsored the bill.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence, GIFFORDS, Newtown Action Alliance, Everytown for Gun Safety, March for Our Lives, Sandy Hook Promise, and the National Parent Teacher Association endorsed the legislation.

  • MIL-OSI USA: At Hearing, Senator Murray Slams Trump Administration for Threatening Biomedical Research and Jeopardizing Americans’ Health

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray

***WATCH AND READ: Senator Murray’s opening remarks***

    ***WATCH: Senator Murray’s questioning***

***WATCH AND READ: Emily Stenson’s testimony***

Washington, D.C. – Today—at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on biomedical research—U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, underscored why the investments we make in biomedical research are so vital, what’s at stake for patients and families as Trump takes a wrecking ball to this research, and why Congress must forcefully push back.

In just 100 days, President Trump and his administration have taken unprecedented actions across the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that are having devastating impacts on biomedical research, innovation, and ultimately, the lives of millions of patients and families. The Trump administration’s actions are delaying funding and stalling research for lifesaving treatments and cures, weakening our biomedical workforce, cancelling vital ongoing studies and trials, and threatening to undo decades of hard-won progress.

At the hearing, Senator Murray shared the story of Emily Stenson, a mom and patient advocate from Washington state whose daughter Charlie was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at just three years old but who, thanks to a National Cancer Institute clinical trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, has been cancer free since December 2024. You can WATCH and READ Emily’s testimony here.

Senator Murray emphasized that these lifesaving cancer trials are now on the chopping block as the Trump administration terminates $137 million in cancer research grants and plans to cut the NIH budget in half, and asked Emily, “If half of the cancer clinical trials were suddenly cancelled—what would that mean for patients like Charlie and the people you know on the cancer ward at Seattle Children’s?”

Emily replied, It would be devastating. There’s no other option often than a clinical trial. And how can you look at these families and say, we’re taking away the only option to save your child. There’s no funding. It feels like the government doesn’t care about families like ours if they take that away. It will be futures left in the balance.”

Senator Murray also asked Dr. Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Dr. Barry Sleckman, Director of the University of Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Center, about the impact Trump’s attacks on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will have on the future of biomedical research and Americans’ health.

Senator Murray noted that over the last three months, NIH has awarded billions less in funding than over the same period in previous years, which is unprecedented for an agency that typically awards 60,000 grants a year. All the while, Trump has fired or pushed out nearly 5,000 NIH employees, including grant administrators whose job it is to award this funding. Senator Murray asked Dr. Parikh, At this rate, do you think NIH will be able to spend the $47 billion Congress passed and President Trump signed into law?”

Dr. Parikh responded, Thank you for that. If the will is there they can because I know the program folks that are still there, and they will work harder than anybody to work with the scientists in the field, to do the peer review, to get those dollars out. Because those dollars are not just about getting money out the door, it’s about funding the ideas that have been proposed, and there are plenty of proposals, there are plenty of good ideas. We don’t fund enough; the pay lines are already at 20 and 10 percent. We need to make sure that we do get those out, because otherwise it will be impoundment by default.”

Well, we know that they have canceled peer review panels and they’re firing staff. So, can they get that funding out the door effectively?” Senator Murray followed up.

“Only if it becomes a priority. Only if it becomes a priority. We have to make sure that it can go out. I am confident that it can, if they make it a priority. I have not seen that yet,” Dr. Parikh replied.

Senator Murray pressed, “Who’s the ‘they’?”

“The ‘they’ is the NIH. The NIH administrators, leaders, and the Department of Health and Human Services. We have to be able to say that we are going to start awarding these grants at the rate that it requires to get the fully appropriated amount that you all approved at the end of last fiscal year,” Dr. Parikh responded.

“To your knowledge, has that been done?” inquired Senator Murray.

Dr. Parikh stated, “Not yet, the rate isn’t quite there yet.”

Senator Murray also discussed the Trump administration’s announcement that they would stop funding the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which they later claimed they would reverse. WHI studies cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women—and thanks to this research, 126,000 cases of breast cancer and 76,000 cases of heart disease were prevented over a decade. The Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle is the clinical coordinating center for WHI and one of four regional centers. Senator Murray noted that: “The annual funding for these centers costs about $10 million, that’s less than half by the way of what taxpayers spend on President Trump’s golf trips just in case you were keeping track over the last 3 months—$10 million!”

“How important, I wanted to ask you, is sex in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and do you think now is the time to be cutting breast cancer research?” Senator Murray continued by asking Dr. Sleckman.

Dr. Sleckman replied, Thank you for that question, Senator. You know, let me make a comment first about the Women’s Health Study. These types of studies are essential for cancer and understanding the basis of cancer. This is a very long-term study, not a five-year grant. Something where they’ve been following women for decades and using that information to understand about cancer risk and then make informed decisions about cancer prevention. These types of studies could only be funded in a large, organized way through the federal government, the NIH and the NCI. Getting back to your question, is that it’s extremely important to study the biological difference between men and women when it comes to cancer risk, cancer progression, and cancer treatment—extremely important. There are large groups at pretty much all NCI cancer centers that either take that into account when they’re designing a trial or are studying it specifically—absolutely important. Thank you for that question.”

    ____________________________

As the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, NIH has long been considered one of America’s crown jewels with a long history of strong bipartisan support from Congress. Less than 1 percent of the federal budget goes to medical research, yet NIH research drives our economy at the national and local levels by supporting thousands of jobs in every state. More than 83 percent of NIH’s budget goes to more than 300,000 research personnel at over 3,000 universities, medical schools, and other research institutions. NIH directly and indirectly supports more than 550,000 jobs across the country. It pays off: local communities see $2.56 of economic activity for every dollar invested in this research. NIH-funded research contributed to 354 out of 356 drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2010 to 2019. The FDA plays an intricate role in advancing the biomedical research ecosystem in the United States, by regulating, promoting, and supporting the approval of new drugs, biologics, and medical devices coming on the market.

Despite this, President Trump has systematically undermined NIH and the research it funds, as well as the FDA. He has terminated nearly 800 NIH grants across the country, cutting off more than $1.1 billion in essential research and trials. So far this year, he has slow walked roughly $2 billion in vital NIH funding that should be going out the door to fund the research that might discover the next treatment or cure that will change—or save—a patient’s life. Funding for Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer research are just a few examples of large multi-million-dollar research grants that we know are being held hostage. He has illegally sought to cut billions in funding for universities to conduct this vital research by illegally capping the indirect cost rate in direct violation of bipartisan appropriations law. President Trump has pushed out nearly 5,000 NIH employees and 4,000 FDA employees—decimating the very work responsible for discovering lifechanging treatments and cures and ensuring they can safely get to market. He also reportedly plans to propose to nearly halve NIH’s budget.

As a longtime appropriator and former Chair of the Senate HELP Committee, Murray has led Congressional efforts to boost biomedical research. Previously, over her years as Chair of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Murray secured billions of dollars in increases for biomedical research at NIH, and during her time as Chair of the HELP Committee she established the new ARPA-H research agency as part of her PREVENT Pandemics Act to advance some of the most cutting-edge research in the field. Senator Murray was also the lead Democratic negotiator of the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act, which delivered a major federal investment to boost NIH research, among many other investments.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murray’s Bill to Reauthorize Northwest Straits Commission Passes Through Senate Science Committee

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray

Senator Murray has worked tirelessly to fund the Northwest Straits Commission every single year since 1998

ICYMI: Senator Murray, Cantwell, and Rep. Larsen Reintroduce Legislation to Permanently Reauthorize Northwest Straits Commission

Washington, D.C. — Today, Senators Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, announced that the Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Initiative Reauthorization Act of 2025 passed out of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. The legislation would reauthorize the Northwest Straits Commission in the Puget Sound, and fund it at $3 million each fiscal year for the next five years, through Fiscal Year 2031.

Murray and Cantwell’s bill will now have to pass through the full Senate and the House before it can be signed into law.

The Northwest Straits Commission is a community-led effort to restore marine habitats in the Northwest Straits region and address local threats to marine environments with projects such as restoring shellfish populations, protecting vulnerable ecosystems, and promoting growth for native water and shore-based plants. The Northwest Straits Commission provides funding, training, and support to seven county-based Marine Resources Committees (MRCs). The Commission advises local officials on how to best carry out environmental projects and provides expertise to community organizations to help them be partners in their work by, for example, training volunteers to identify forage fish spawning sites. Senator Murray led the authorization of the Northwest Straits Commission in 1998 and has secured federal funding for the Commission every single year in the decades since.

“I first established the Northwest Straits Commission with bipartisan support in 1998, to ensure our rich marine resources in the Northwest Straits stay healthy—which in Washington state is critical for our local communities, Tribes, and economy,” said Senator Murray. “This legislation would help provide a strong and consistent funding stream for the Commission and ensure partners on the ground can expand their efforts to protect our marine species and habitats and support our outdoor recreation economy. I am proud to continue leading the charge to authorize the Northwest Straits Commission, and I will keep fighting to secure federal funding for this effort as I have done since I first helped establish the commission.”

“The Puget Sound and the Straits are [among the busiest] waterways in the nation, and just happen to intersect with also some of the most beautiful habitat and species in the nation as well,” Sen. Cantwell said. “Having the Straits Commission continue to do their work is very important.”

The Northwest Straits Commission is supported by a wide range of stakeholders, including state and federal agencies, elected leaders, and Tribal partners throughout the Puget Sound Region.

The Northwest Straits Commission was established following the bipartisan partnership of Senator Murray and former Congressman Jack Metcalf. Murray and Metcalf released a report in 1998 that laid the groundwork for the Northwest Straits Commission and its work protecting marine habitats, and later that year, Senator Murray successfully authorized the Northwest Straits Commission for a six-year period. Over the years, Senator Murray has helped secure tens of millions of dollars in federal funding for the Northwest Straits Commission’s restoration work and research—part of Senator Murray’s longtime, steadfast commitment to salmon recovery in the Pacific Northwest.

Last year, as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray secured $1 million for the Northwest Straits Initiative through programmatic funding in the appropriations bills she wrote and passed into law in March 2024—this was the first time Northwest Straits received programmatic funding since the original authorization expired in 2004, and is significant in helping to ensure the Commission is funded. In the appropriations bills for Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023, Senator Murray secured a total of $6 million in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) funding for the Northwest Straits Commission; that funding was essential to the removal of the “Windjammer” sailboat that had been partially submerged near the Kukutali Preserve since 2009 on Swinomish Tribal tideland. Prior to the return of Congressionally Directed Spending in Fiscal Year 2022, Murray ensured the Northwest Straits Commission received annual funding through the EPA’s Puget Sound Geographic Program. Prior to that, Murray secured CDS funding for the Northwest Straits Commission after the original authorization for the Commission expired in 2004.

  • MIL-OSI USA: House Republicans Reject Nadler Transit Safety Amendment Despite Bad-Faith USDOT Threats to Withhold Funding from Transit Agencies

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jerrold Nadler (10th District of New York)

WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, Republican members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee voted down—on a party-line basis—an amendment offered by Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) to provide substantial funding for transit safety and security.

The vote came just weeks after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued letters threatening to withhold federal funding from agencies like the MTA and WMATA over alleged safety concerns. Nadler’s amendment would have provided dedicated capital grants—fully authorized under existing law—to upgrade safety infrastructure, expand staffing, and better protect both passengers and frontline transit workers.

“Secretary Duffy claims to care about safety. But when Republicans were given the chance to support real solutions, they turned their backs on the very transit agencies they’ve been scapegoating,” said Congressman Nadler. “It’s clear that their threats to withhold federal funds from the MTA aren’t truly about safety—they’re about undermining New York’s increasingly popular congestion pricing program.”

Public transit remains one of the safest ways to travel, with the National Safety Council reporting it is ten times safer than driving. In New York, felony crime on the subway is at a 30-year low, and assaults on transit workers have dropped more than 30 percent, thanks in part to federal investments in cameras, de-escalation training, and safety teams. This amendment would have built on these gains by providing substantial funding to expand proven safety interventions nationwide. The federal government can and should do far more to help improve transit safety by investing in the infrastructure, staffing, and technology that protect both riders and workers.

“Riders don’t need threats from Washington about cutting vital transit funding—they need real investment in safety, reliability, and respect for the communities who rely on public transportation every day,” Congressman Nadler continued. “That’s what this amendment offered. Instead, Republicans chose politics over public safety.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Danny K. Davis Reflects on President Trump’s First 100 Days of His Second Term

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Danny K Davis (7th District of Illinois)

    April 30, 2025

CHICAGO, IL — Today, Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL-07) issued the following statement reflecting on the first 100 days of President Donald J. Trump’s second term:

“As President Trump marks his 100th day in his second term, I reflect not only on what has transpired but on what is at stake for the American people. These first 100 days have been defined by a clear agenda to roll back hard-fought gains in healthcare, civil rights, social services, and economic protections for working families.

The administration’s attempt to privatize Social Security and raise the retirement age is a direct attack on seniors who have spent a lifetime paying into the system. Their efforts to weaken Medicaid and repeal key elements of the Affordable Care Act threaten millions of Americans—particularly in communities of color and rural America—who depend on access to affordable healthcare.

In education, we’ve seen proposals to slash funding for public schools while diverting resources to unregulated private institutions. Meanwhile, student debt relief programs are being dismantled, leaving our young people burdened and betrayed.

With regard to criminal justice, the White House’s abandonment of reentry programs, elimination of funding for Second Chance initiatives, and return to punitive incarceration policies represent a disturbing setback for restorative justice and rehabilitation efforts that are critical to reducing recidivism and creating opportunity.

The administration’s failure to adequately address climate change, gun violence, and economic inequality has exposed its priorities—and they do not lie with everyday Americans. Instead, tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, deregulation of corporate interests, and divisive political rhetoric have taken center stage.

Yet, I remain hopeful because the American people are resilient. We are organizing, marching, voting, and demanding a future that honors equity, truth, and justice. As a senior Member of Congress and Co-Chair of the Congressional Reentry Caucus, I will continue to fight to protect our social safety net, expand access to opportunity, and resist any effort that undermines the dignity of our democracy.”

Yesterday, Pressley Rallied With Colleagues at State Dept. to Demand Mahdawi’s Release and Due Process for All

Pressley Recently Met with Constituent Rümeysa Öztürk, Mahmoud Khalil at ICE Detention Centers in Louisiana

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement applauding the release of Mohsen Mahdawi, Columbia University student and lawful permanent resident who was detained on April 14 after his naturalization interview in Vermont. Yesterday, at a rally outside the State Department, Congresswoman Pressleyjoined Congresswoman Becca Balint (VT-AL)and their colleagues to call for Mahdawi’s immediate release and demand due process for all. Congresswoman Pressley recently met with constituent Rümeysa Öztürk and Mahmoud Khalil, two students who have been unlawfully detained by ICE and transported to Louisiana from their homes in retaliation for their protected speech.

“Mohsen’s release is an encouraging step in the fight to defend our democracy and the constitutional rights that Donald Trump is working overtime to rip away,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley. “Due process and free speech are fundamental rights. I am relieved and encouraged that Mohsen was released from detention today, and I continue to demand the immediate release of my constituent Rümeysa Öztürk, as well as Mahmoud Khalil, and the residents across the nation who may not have made headlines but similarly have been unjustly detained by this hostile administration. We have not forgotten about you and we will fight for your rights daily.”

Mahdawi, a Vermont permanent resident for the last ten years, was abruptly arrested earlier this month by masked, hooded ICE agents without being charged with a crime. In response to his arrest, Rep. Balint, Rep. Pressley, and 66 other House Democrats demanded to know the Administration’s alleged reason for his arrest from Secretaries Rubio and Noem and received no response.

A full transcript of her remarks at yesterday’s rally is available below and video is available here.

We keep using the word shame, and this is a shame that we find ourselves here.

And it is also a sham.

These extremist acts to disappear people from society have nothing to do with immigration. They have nothing to do with law and order. They have everything to do with power.

And Donald Trump is abusing power. That is what dictators do. Dictators mean to silence any dissenting voices – and the only way to beat a dictator is with defiance, and that’s what brings us all here today.

I’m so glad that you all are awake. The other side wants you to be asleep. They’re anti-woke because they want a citizenry that is ignorant and uninformed, that is indifferent to the suffering of their neighbors, and that is inactive.

So you’re already winning, and you give me hope and make it easier to practice the discipline of hope – because you could have been anywhere else today, but you chose to be here to say that these abuses of power will not go unchecked.

I know that I am speaking to the choir as I go to refer to my notes and enumerate these facts, but I preach to the choir for one reason, because I need the choir to sing.

When you leave here, I need you to sing about these injustices. I need you to sing about the fact that this is not about whether or not we can weather the next four years, that this is about shaping the next one hundred.

I need you to sing about the fact that this is the moment and the opportunity to be better ancestors than descendants.

    Who is Mohsen?

Mohsen was raised in a Palestinian refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. He is a man who loves and is loved, who is connected to family, who is connected to community.

Mohsen is a green card holder and lawful permanent resident of the United States.

Mohsen is a scholar, a senior at Columbia University and co-founder of Columbia’s Palestinian Student Union.

And now, shamefully, Mohsen is a political prisoner.

Instead of celebrating his graduation and preparing for his Master’s program in the fall, he was on the verge of becoming a US citizen, after 10 years of living and learning and contributing in the United States.

Instead, his life has been upended, and he is awaiting his future from the confines of a detention center. Shameful.

In Donald Trump’s America, Mohsen’s story is becoming shamefully all too familiar to all of us.

He was whisked away and disappeared off of the streets, just like my constituent, Somerville resident and PhD student, Rümeysa Öztürk.

Make no mistake, these abductions are not isolated.

They are part and parcel of Trump’s precise, intentional, and coordinated attack on our democracy and our constitutional rights.

They serve no purpose other than to silence dissent, restrict due process, and to sow fear in our communities – which is exactly how a dictator operates.

But again, we will not allow these abuses of power to go unchecked or unanswered.

Last week, I went to conduct some real-time oversight. I visited our sister Rümeysa Öztürk and our brother Mahmoud Khalil in Louisiana at the ICE detention facilities where they are being held.

Allow me to digress for a moment to remind people that this is a for-profit carceral system, and the same way that there are billionaire corporations that benefit from for-profit prisons and mass incarceration, the same billionaire corporations are benefiting from for-profit detention centers and the disappearing of immigrants. These things are all connected.

So if someone at home is saying, “Why should I care about this?”

If you care about mass incarceration, you need to care about mass deportation. If you care about mass deportation, you need to care about mass incarceration.

So last week, I went for a wellness check, which also again, was real-time congressional oversight. What I saw and heard from Rümeysa and Mahmoud was harrowing, heartbreaking, and infuriating.

Mahmoud spoke of growing up in Syria under Assad. He said, “I know what an authoritarian regime looks like – and this is it.”

Rümeysa thanked me for being there, along with my colleagues in our CODEL and said the women at this detention facility have questioned if God has forgotten about us, if the world has forgotten about us.

They are being denied proper medical care, deprived of sleep. They’re not receiving nutritious meals, no religious accommodation. A nurse, without consent, removed Rümeysa’s hijab.

    The cruelty is the point.

Look family, what’s happening to Mohsen, Rümeysa, Mahmoud and so many others is a damning injustice. They’ve been charged with no crimes, and are being detained simply for exercising their right to free speech, for speaking out about the Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza.

Now let me be clear, regardless of your position on that issue or any other, this should outrage everyone and anyone with a moral conscience.

I do not journey to rural Louisiana because I am a Democrat. I journeyed to rural Louisiana because I’m a human being who gives a damn about other human beings.

In America we have a fundamental right to freedom of speech, and that’s what makes us who we are. So this blatant, flagrant violation of our First Amendment rights through these abductions should outrage everyone, regardless of your personal beliefs.

And as I close, because our freedoms and our destinies are tied, in his letter to Angela Y. Davis, James Baldwin wrote, “If they take you in the morning, dear sister, they will surely be coming for us that night.” And that is the truth.

Today, it is Mohsen, it is Rümeysa, it is Mahmoud, and tomorrow it could be you.

It could be you for reading a banned book. It could be you for suffering a miscarriage. It could be you for practicing Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

So today, we refuse to accept these abuses as inevitable. We demand due process and accountability for all, and we will keep working to protect our Constitution and everyone who calls this country home.

Free Mohsen Mahdawi. Free Rümeysa Öztürk. Free Mahmoud Khalil. Save our democracy.

This is not about weathering the next four years. This is about shaping the next one hundred.

  • MIL-OSI USA: US Department of Labor celebrates National Apprenticeship Day 2025, highlighting limitless potential of apprenticeships for American workers

    Source: US Department of Labor

WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer celebrated National Apprenticeship Day today by welcoming the International Association of Fire Fighters for a ceremonial signing event highlighting the importance of apprenticeships and ways the program can unlock a multitude of possibilities for the American worker.

The National Apprenticeship Day 2025 event recognized IAFF’s new National Apprenticeship Guideline Standards and honored the union’s commitment to training their firefighters and emergency personnel through the Registered Apprenticeship model.

Since its inception in 2015, National Apprenticeship Week has been an annual nationwide celebration for employers, educators, state agencies, unions, and many others to showcase how Registered Apprenticeships improve and expand career pathways for American workers, while helping employers drive economic growth across all industries. In those 10 years, more than 1.9 million people participated in more than 10,000 National Apprenticeship Week events, and over 1,800 proclamations have been issued in support of Registered Apprenticeships. Typically celebrated in the fall, National Apprenticeship Week will move to the spring beginning in 2026 following stakeholder feedback.

The Trump Administration has committed to enhancing and expanding the National Apprenticeship system, with two recent executive orders, “Preparing Americans for High-Paying Skilled Trade Jobs of the Future” and “Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth.” These decisive actions will unlock the limitless potential of the American worker by strengthening Registered Apprenticeships, modernizing workforce development programs, educating America’s youth to keep up with technology advancements, and investing in upskilling workers to meet current labor market demands.

National Apprenticeship Day 2025 will include nearly 1,000 events and proclamations in all 50 states and territories across the country. These events highlight innovation and cooperation between employers, apprentices and apprentice graduates, educational institutions, community-based organizations, federal partners, industry associations, intermediaries, labor unions, state agencies, elected officials, and many others.

“As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Day, this administration remains committed to expanding and strengthening registered apprenticeships, guaranteeing the skilled workforce necessary for businesses to thrive,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “I will personally ensure the Labor Department is helping to fulfill our bold goal of exceeding one million active apprentices and empower American workers to fill high-demand jobs that will secure economic prosperity. I was honored to host firefighters with the International Association of Fire Fighters today as we celebrated progressing toward that goal with new apprenticeship standards for first responders.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Welch Questions Trump’s Nominee to lead Customs and Border Protection: “I hope you can find a way to be really respectful of the long-term traditions that have been very beneficial for Vermonters.”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) questioned Rodney Scott, President Trump’s nominee to be the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in a Senate Finance Committee hearing today.
Senator Welch asked how Mr. Scott plans to balance public safety while respecting migrants’ contributions to their communities and our agriculture industry, specifically discussing the recent arrests and detention of eight migrant farmworkers. Senator Welch also pushed the nominee on CBP’s limited hours at Land Ports of Entry between Vermont and Canada, as well as how CBP will work with northern border communities to protect shared traditions and institutions, like the Haskell Free Library and Opera House.
Watch the exchange between Senator Welch and Rodney Scott, President Trump’s pick to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection:

Read excerpts of Senator Welch’s questioning below:
Sen. Welch: You’ve got a big responsibility, obviously, to have the border secure, criminals to be deported. But there’s also an element where the overreach in the power of prosecution and in the power of law enforcement—as you know better than anyone—is immense, can have some harmful consequences.
We’ve got folks working on dairy farms, and we just had one of our most prominent dairy farms—there was an incident there. That farm, by the way, has extremely good relations with CBP folks. These farmers understand the importance of the job. But there was apparently an ‘anonymous tip’ about somebody with a backpack that led to eight farmworkers being arrested—they’re now in detention. We’ve got to milk our cows. We’ve got to have access to labor. None of these folks have any criminal record, and really this is a question about priorities.
I’m all with my colleagues here on securing the border. I’m all with my colleagues on deporting criminals. But my goodness, we need farmworkers. How are you going to balance the aggressive efforts of the Trump Administration on the border and make distinctions between where you best can act in order to protect the public and not harm agriculture?
Scott: Thank you. So, Customs and Border Protection’s role is a little bit unique in that we’re focused on the interdiction aspect. So, we’re focused on people coming into the United States illegally at the borders or an international border, we’re not doing the interior enforcement aspects. But I will highlight that I don’t support asking law enforcement officers to not enforce the law that’s in front of them. And that’s kind of the challenge. I like highlighting the fact that we have a visa process now where it may not be the easiest on the planet, but it’s not as hard for employers to actually get guestworkers to come in—not a guestworker, but an HB1V…
Sen. Welch: This farm did that. But there’s always a dispute and there’s always a suspicion. These people, I spoke to the farmer, none of them have any criminal records, they’re all valued members of the community. And by the way, the economy—this is Franklin County in northern Vermont—has really benefited, obviously, by the wages that are paid, by the money that’s spent, and by maintaining these farms. I mean, these are real-world consequences for real people in Vermont. And I suspect, real people in many other states, especially along the northern border.
Scott: If confirmed as Commissioner, I’ll ensure that we enforce all of the laws that CBP enforces—immigration and customs—with humanity and respect and work with the communities. But I can’t apologize for actually enforcing the laws that Congress enacted and put on the books and asked us to enforce.
Sen. Welch: I’m not asking you to apologize. And you do have a point, because it’s on Congress that we don’t have a sensible policy on ag workers. That is on us. But you know what? We’ve got to do something about it. It’s horrible, what just happened to this farm—really terrible. These are all good people that are working there, and they’ve been separated from their families.
Land ports of entry in Vermont: We have a library that literally—you know about this—is between the border between Canada and in Vermont. And this is one of the challenges you face. Canadians come in the back door, which is on the Canadian side, and Vermonters go in the front door, which is on the Vermont side. And now we’re getting hassled about being able to maintain something that has served that community for 120 years. So, I get it that you’ve got to ‘enforce the law,’ but is it a real issue about Canadians coming into the Canadian side of a Vermont library to get a book?
Scott: So, I’m somewhat familiar with that library. I have not visited, but I’ve heard the challenges in both perspectives. The community, the history, the interaction, and then how like many times when we unintentionally create a vulnerability, how criminal elements will exploit it.
Sen. Welch: But there’s no criminal elements going to the Haskell Library to check out a book.
Scott: Well, they go in there, but it’s not to check out a book, I would agree. But my commitment to you is if confirmed, I will sit down and talk through issues like that. That we’re not going to make decisions in a vacuum.
    Sen. Welch: I appreciate that.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kelly, Panetta introduce bipartisan bill to boost retirement security through ESOPs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), Chairman of the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Tax, and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) introduced The Promotion and Expansion of Private Employee Ownership Act of 2025, legislation to grow and promote employee ownership through private ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans), a proven way to create stable jobs, build retirement wealth, and promote business growth.

“By expanding Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), we can put more hardworking Americans on the path to financial prosperity and a secure retirement,” said Rep. Kelly. “This bipartisan, bicameral plan is a win-win for workers and businesses: it allows businesses to include employee ownership in the compensation package, and ESOPs often retain more employees as a result. This is great legislation for both the employer and employee alike!”

“Too many hardworking Americans are approaching retirement without financial security and peace of mind,” said Rep. Panetta. “By helping businesses become employee-owned through their retirement plans, this bipartisan bill would give workers a stake in their company and a stronger path to build savings. When employees have ownership, businesses do better, communities grow stronger, and our economy becomes more resilient.”

“Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) empower hardworking Americans to achieve financial prosperity and secure their retirement while helping their companies grow and thrive,” said Stephanie Silverman, President and CEO of the Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (ESCA). “With job stability and economic growth a top priority for all workers, creating additional employee ownership opportunities is one way Congress can help more Americans retire with confidence and weather economic uncertainty.”

The Promotion and Expansion of Private Employee Ownership Act of 2025 would encourage S corporation business owners to form an ESOP, especially when looking to transition ownership.

    BACKGROUND

    Additionally, the bill would:

    • Provide needed technical assistance for companies that may be interested in forming an ESOP;
    • Ensure small businesses that become ESOP-owned retain their SBA certification;
    • Create an Advocate for Employee Ownership at the U.S. Department of Labor.

At introduction, Representatives Kelly and Panetta were joined by six original cosponsors on the House Ways & Means Committee: Reps. Ron Estes (R-KS), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Carol Miller (R-WV), Danny Davis (D-IL), Blake Moore (R-UT) and Terri Sewell (D-AL).

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Road projects improve safety, reliability in Cariboo

Three road-improvement projects are moving forward to address Cariboo roads affected by slides and washouts, paving the way for improved reliability and safety for residents in the region.

“Ensuring people can travel on safe and reliable roadways is our top priority,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit. “Our transportation investments in the Cariboo go beyond road repairs. We’re building back better to ensure resilient infrastructure, which will improve the quality of life for residents, businesses, and travellers in the region.”

The three Cariboo Road Recovery Projects (CRRP) proceeding to the next phase are:

    • Kersley-Dale Landing Road: A contract has been awarded to West Horizon Contracting. The new road alignment will bypass landslide-prone areas, providing a climate-resilient design that reduces future risks. Construction is set to begin in the coming months.
    • Quesnel-Hydraulic Road: Construction will stabilize and realign the road to meet modern design standards. A construction tender will be issued this year, with work expected to begin as early as spring 2026.
    • Bastin Road at Bastin Hill: Construction will make improvements including up-slope flattening to reduce landslide risks, added rock blankets for slope stability, upgraded drainage, and realignment of the road away from the Quesnel River. Construction is expected to begin as early as summer 2025.

A portion of Durrell Road in Quesnel that has been closed since being severely affected by two landslides in 2021 will not reopen. An alternative route is available. The area will be naturalized, and turnaround points will be built to assist traffic on both sides of the site.

In 2020 and 2021, changing weather patterns contributed to hundreds of landslides and road washouts across the Cariboo. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is working to restore access to affected roads and highways with a focus on building back better, benefiting area residents, businesses and travellers.

To date, four CRRP projects have progressed to construction or are complete, including Highway 97 at Cottonwood Hill, Blackwater Road and Knickerbocker Road, Highway 97 at Cuisson Creek and Soda Creek-MacAlister Road.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: B.C. streamlines permitting for renewable-energy projects

Source: Government of Canada regional news

The Province is taking action to speed up permitting for renewable-energy projects to meet growing demand for clean power, address climate change and secure energy independence for British Columbians in the face of unprecedented trade threats.

Government introduced the renewable energy projects (streamlined permitting) act to the legislative assembly on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. If passed, the act will expand the authority of the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) to oversee renewable-energy projects, building on the Province’s investments to generate the clean power needed to create a healthier environment and sustainable future for British Columbians.

“B.C. has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become a world leader in clean-energy production and we will take every action possible to see that all British Columbians benefit from this opportunity,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “Renewable energy projects like wind and solar are urgently needed to provide affordable clean power, create jobs, and strengthen and diversify our economy, especially during this period of global market uncertainty.”

If approved, these changes will establish the BCER as the primary permitting agency for renewable-energy projects and transmission lines. The legislation will help simplify the approvals process for these projects, eliminating the need for cross-ministry and agency permitting, by establishing the BCER as the single window for permitting in accordance with strict environmental standards. This will be completed in a staged approach through regulation.

The BCER’s initial focus will be on the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL) project and the wind- and solar-power projects in BC Hydro’s 2024 call for power. This will help accelerate the expansion of British Columbia’s electricity grid and meet the demand in growth arising from critical-mineral and metal mining, port electrification, hydrogen and fuel processing, and shipping projects under consideration.

    The proposed legislation would also:

    • exempt the NCTL project and the nine wind projects selected in the 2024 call for power from the environmental assessment processes and allow government to do the same for other wind-power projects in the future; and
    • enable the BCER to establish a new rigorous regulatory framework for renewable-energy projects through consultation with First Nations, ensuring that environmental standards are upheld.

“The BC Energy Regulator is pleased to see the introduction of this legislation and has been engaging with ministries and others to prepare for this expanded mandate that will include permitting processes and engagement functions,” said Michelle Carr, CEO and commissioner, BC Energy Regulator. “Our staff are working across seven regional offices to ensure energy activities are carried out safely, responsibly and in alignment with provincial goals and BCER’s vision for a resilient energy future.”

The Province is committed to accelerating decisions on renewable-energy projects responsibly.

The BCER has demonstrated expertise at getting projects moving quickly, while providing robust regulatory oversight through the lifecycle of projects. This is a natural evolution of the BCER’s role, which initially focused on oil, gas and geothermal development, then expanded to include hydrogen and now, renewable energy.

    Quotes:

Doug Slater, vice-president, Indigenous relations and regulatory affairs, FortisBC

“Our focus is on delivering safe, reliable and affordable energy to the families and businesses we serve. Collaborating with local power providers and Indigenous organizations helps us meet the energy demands of homes and businesses in the southern Interior while supporting regional development. Our hope is that these legislative and regulatory changes will help streamline processes and accelerate projects to efficiently deliver power to our customers, including our plans to add up to 1,100 GWh of energy supply as soon as 2030.”

Kwatuuma Cole Sayers, executive director, Clean Energy Association of British Columbia

“This legislation is an important step toward a balanced regulatory framework that encourages responsible clean-energy development at a critical time for our communities, our economy and our climate. The Clean Energy Association of British Columbia is proud to work with the Province and the BC Energy Regulator to help build a framework that is efficient, transparent and aligned with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Together, we can build a cleaner, stronger and more resilient future.”

    Quick Facts:

    • Under the renewable energy projects (streamlined permitting) act, a renewable or clean resource means biomass, biogas, geothermal heat, hydro, solar, ocean, wind or any other clean-energy resource.
    • The BCER has a team of more than 300 employees in seven offices throughout B.C.
    • The BCER’s staff includes biologists, engineers, hydrologists, agrologists, compliance and enforcement officers, First Nations liaison officers, heritage conservation officers and archeologists.
    • The BCER will hire additional staff and subject-matter experts to support the additional responsibilities.
    • In 2024, FortisBC issued a request for expression of interest for new power to identify projects from lower-carbon and renewable sources in British Columbia that could add up to 1,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy supply for its approximately 190,000 electricity customers in the south Okanagan by 2030.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Crapo, Risch and Colleagues Introduce Bill to Stand Up for Israel at the UN

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Idaho Mike Crapo

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Ted Budd (R-North Carolina), Mike Lee (R-Utah), James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Dave McCormick (R-Pennsylvania), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Katie Britt (R-Alabama), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), John Boozman (R-Arkansas), Marsha Blackburn (R- Tennessee), Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska), Jim Justice (R-West Virginia), John Hoeven (R-North Dakota), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Rick Scott (R-Florida), Ashley Moody (R- Florida) and Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), today introduced the Stand with Israel Act that would cut off U.S. funding to United Nations (UN) agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend or otherwise restrict the participation of the State of Israel.

“America unequivocally backs Israel, our strongest ally in the Middle East, in its right to defend itself against terrorist attacks and ensure the security of its citizens.  This Act will hold the United Nations accountable for antisemitic attempts to restrict Israeli participation in UN agencies as the Trump Administration works to achieve regional stability and peace,” said Senator Crapo.

Senator Crapo is a staunch ally of Israel who recently joined in introducing the Israel Security Assistance Act, co-sponsored a resolution asserting Israel’s right to self-defense and supported a resolution to strengthen the economic ties between Israel and the United States.

“Israel is one of America’s greatest allies, and under President Trump’s Administration, we will no longer tolerate—much less fund—the blatant antisemitism at the United Nations.  This bill will send a clear message to the UN and any other antisemitic international organizations: if you want America’s money, you’ll need to respect our Israeli friends,” said Chairman Risch.  “America will always stand with Israel.”

Background on the Stand with Israel Act:

    • The Stand with Israel Act would cut off U.S. funding to UN agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend or otherwise restrict the participation of the State of Israel.  The bill is modeled after the current prohibition of funding to any UN entities that elevate the status of the Palestinian Authority to a member state.
