  • MIL-OSI China: Asia’s largest flower market sees blooming business in 2024

Source: China State Council Information Office

The Dounan Flower Market, Asia’s largest fresh-cut flower trading market, in the southwest Chinese city of Kunming saw flower transaction volume up 5 percent to 14.18 billion stems last year.

With a transaction value of 11.57 billion yuan (about 1.61 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024, the market has led the country in both flower transaction volume and value for 25 consecutive years.

The Dounan Flower Market, located in the Chenggong District of Kunming, Yunnan Province, is also the world’s second-largest fresh-cut flower trading hub. This bustling market is a key supplier, with flowers from Dounan reaching every provincial-level region on the Chinese mainland and more than 50 countries and regions worldwide, including Japan and Thailand.

Flower cultivation in Dounan dates back to 1983. In the 1990s, local residents began commercial cultivation and trading. In 1999, China’s first professional flower trading market was established in Dounan.

Since then, the market has expanded its flower industry chain, solidifying its position as a major flower trading hub. Now, seven out of 10 fresh-cut flowers in China come from Dounan.

Dounan’s blooming flower industry highlights China’s prominence in the global flower market.

With about 1.5 million hectares dedicated to flower cultivation and more than 5 million people involved in the industry, China has become the world’s largest flower producer and an important flower trader and consumer.

A guideline jointly issued by China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs proposed that by 2025, the annual sales of the country’s flower industry will reach 300 billion yuan, and more than 700 billion yuan in 2035.

  • MIL-OSI China: Restored stability in China-Australia ties benefits both sides: FM

Source: China State Council Information Office

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, meets with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Johannesburg, South Africa, Feb. 21, 2025. (Xinhua/Zhang Yudong)

The return of China-Australia relations to a path of sound and stable development serves the common interests of both sides and aligns with the aspirations of their peoples, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said while meeting with his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday.

Under the strategic guidance of their leaders, China-Australia relations have stabilized, a development welcomed by all sectors of both countries, said Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

China is ready to work with Australia to build a more mature, stable and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership, he added.

While appreciating Australia’s repeated commitment to the one-China principle, China hopes that Australia will continue to respect its core interests and major concerns, maintain the political foundation of bilateral relations, and properly manage differences, Wang said.

Amid the current complex and volatile international situation, China believes that all countries should practice true multilateralism, with major countries taking the lead in firmly opposing efforts to reverse the course of history and return to the “law of the jungle,” he said.

China is ready to work with Australia and other members of the international community to defend the victorious outcomes of World War II and uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, he added.

Wong, for her part, said that China-Australia exchanges across various fields have made positive strides, with economic and trade relations fully recovered, sending positive signals.

The Australian side adheres to the one-China policy and is willing to continue strengthening cooperation with China in areas that serve their respective national interests, uphold the international rule of law and strategic security, and jointly address global challenges, she said.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: South Australia Police urgent call for safer road behaviours

    Source: South Australia Police

South Australia Police is making an urgent call for safer road behaviours, after 17 lives have tragically already been lost in 2025. Vulnerable road users have been overrepresented this year, with three motorcyclists, three pedestrians and two cyclists killed on our roads.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Services Branch, Acting Superintendent Jaimi Burns said serious road trauma has been occurring at a concerning rate this year and it is tragic to see the majority of lives lost on the roads have been vulnerable road users.

Superintendent Burns’ warning comes as analysis of 2024 fatalities and serious injuries reveals speed and dangerous driving as the major causes of lives lost.

In 2024, 91 lives lost and 847 people were left with serious injuries resulting from road crashes, with the majority of incidents occurring on regional roads.

Distraction, driving dangerously and speeding were the leading causes of last year’s 847 serious injury crashes. Additionally. drug driving was a contributing factor in 70 regional serious injury crashes and 129 motorcycle serious injury crashes.

“Serious road trauma often involves one or more of the Fatal Five road behaviours that significantly increase the risk of being involved in a crash. Tragically, this means almost all lives lost and serious injuries could have been prevented through safer road behaviour’s” Superintendent Burns said.

“With distraction and speeding playing a major role in so many crashes last year, the critical message to road users across South Australia is clear – these selfish behaviours need to stop.”

“We are pleading with people driving on South Australian roads to stay focused and drive to the conditions and speed limit so everyone can arrive safely.”

Young drivers aged 16 to 24 and passengers under 16 were also significantly overrepresented in lives lost and serious injury crashes.

In 2024, 11 young drivers lost their lives while 155 young drivers sustained serious injuries. Additionally, three passengers under 16 lost their lives and 16 were seriously injured

“South Australia Police will continue to take strong action to deter and detect unsafe behaviours on our roads, through road safety education and enforcement statewide,” said Superintendent Burns.

“It is also essential that people understand that making smart and safe choices while on the road will prevent crashes and save lives.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Marape’s message to PNG men, boys: ‘Stop the violence against women’

    PNG Post-Courier

Prime Minister James Marape has issued a strong appeal to all young men and boys in Papua New Guinea — stop abusing girls, mothers, and sisters.

He made the plea yesterday before flying to Australia, emphasising the importance of respecting women and children in society.

Marape urged young men to take their issues to him instead of resorting to violence against women and children.

Marape also called for the nation to rise in consciousness to preserve the values and achievements of their fathers and mothers who fought for independence 50 years ago.

“We want to give a special recognition to the fathers and mothers of our country, a generation and people of our country to be proud to be here today,” he said.

He expressed his pain at seeing the continued cycle of abuse and disrespect towards women and children in the country.

Marape’s message was clear: violence and abuse towards women and children would not be tolerated, and the nation must come together to ensure the safety and well-being of all its citizens.

‘Don’t do it to our sisters’
“These are not two things that we want to take on. For every young boy out there, if you have an issue in society, I don’t mind you taking it upon me. But please don’t do it to the girls in the neighbourhood,” he said.

“Don’t do it to our sisters in the neighbourhood. Don’t do it to our mothers and aunties in the neighbourhood.

“In a time when our nation is facing a 50th anniversary, I call for our nation to rise in a consciousness to preserve what our fathers and mothers did 50 years ago.

“Lawlessness, disrespect for each other, especially women and children amongst us. This is something that I speak at great lengths and speak from the depth of my heart.

“It pains me to see girls, women, and children continue to face a vicious cycle of abuse and total abhorrence, abuse of children, rape,” he said.

“I just thought these are important activities coming up. I want to conclude by asking our country through the media.

“We are in another state of our 50th anniversary year.

    ‘Let us take responsibility’
“We have many challenges in our country. But all of us, we take responsibility of our country. As government, we are trying our absolute best.

“Citizens, public servants, private sector, all of us have responsibility to our country. Unless you have another country to go and live in, if property is your country in the first instance, I call out to all citizens, take responsibility in your corner of property.

“Privacy alone cannot be able to do everything that you expect it to do.

“I’m not omnipotent. I’m not omniscient. I’m not omnipresent.

“I’m but only one person coordinating at the top level. Call for every citizen of our country.

“As we face our 49th year and as we welcome our 50th of September 16,) we call this on every one of us.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Going for Growth: Overseas investment changes to drive higher wages

    Source: New Zealand Government

Associate Finance Minister David Seymour has today announced the Government’s plan to reform the Overseas Investment Act and make it easier for New Zealand businesses to receive new investment, grow and pay higher wages.

“New Zealand is one of the hardest countries in the developed world for overseas people to invest in businesses, and our productivity growth is woeful. Those two facts are closely linked.

“We are introducing reforms to improve New Zealand’s overseas investment laws. The package will speed up decisions and provide more confidence to investors, while protecting our national interests.

“Overseas investment can support economic growth because when workers work with better tools and technologies, they are more productive and get paid more.

“I’ve seen the difference that overseas investment can make. I once visited two businesses in the same industry on the same afternoon. Both had skilled and passionate people with good ideas. One had overseas investment, though, and benefited in two ways. They had more money for machinery, and they had more know-how for manufacturing and marketing their product by receiving knowledge from their partners offshore.

“New Zealand’s productivity growth has closely tracked the amount of capital workers have had to work with. Our capital-to-labour ratio has seen very little growth in the last 10 years, averaging approximately 0.7 per cent annually. That’s compared to growth of around 2 percent a year in the previous 10 to 15 years. Unsurprisingly, productivity growth averaged 1.4 percent a year between 1993 and 2013, but only 0.2 percent between 2013 and 2023.

“The Government has agreed on a reform package which includes:

    • better acknowledging the benefits investment can provide to New Zealand’s economy,
    • for all investments aside from residential land, farmland and fishing quota, making decisions in just 15 days, unless the application could be contrary to New Zealand’s national interest,
    • strengthening the Government’s ability to intervene on the rare occasion that a transaction is not in the national interest,
    • giving LINZ more powers to grant consent without involving Ministers.

“High-value investments, such as significant business assets, existing forestry and non-farmland, account for around $14 billion of gross investment each year. Cabinet has agreed to remove the barriers for these investments, while retaining existing protections for residential land, farmland and fishing quota.

“Nearly every other developed country has less obstructive laws than New Zealand. They benefit from the flow of money and the ideas that come with overseas investment. If we are going to raise wages, we can’t afford to ignore the simple fact that our competitors gain money and know-how from outside their borders.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: BusinessNZ Statement – Overseas investment overhaul: NZ means business

    Source: BusinessNZ

BusinessNZ says the Government’s announcement to reform the Overseas Investment Act sends a positive signal to the world that New Zealand is ready to do business.
Chief Executive Katherine Rich says existing rules make it difficult and uncertain for overseas investors to consider investing here.
“New Zealand’s settings for overseas investment have been some of the most restrictive in the OECD. These rules have held us back from achieving our potential as we say no to investment which has been accepted by other economies.
“As one example, any non-urban land parcel larger than five hectares is deemed sensitive in the current Act. For the likes of a manufacturer looking to set up shop and invest here, anything less is far too small.
“BusinessNZ has long advocated for new policy settings which could allow us to gain the benefits of overseas capital and grow businesses, assets, and the incomes of New Zealanders. We know that business will be heartened by today’s announcement.
“Changing settings will be a positive first step in showing the rest of the world that we welcome investment – but more changes are required to encourage it.
“Settings related to taxation of overseas earnings and incentives for research and development need to be more internationally competitive. Otherwise, investors will choose to put their money and talent where they see a better return.”

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Men’s Wellness Centre to improve First Nations safety in Lakes Entrance

    Source: Ministers for Social Services

    23 February 2025

    Joint with:

    The Hon Amanda Rishworth MP
    Minister for Social Services
Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme
    Member for Kingston

    Senator Raff Ciccone
    Federal Labor Senator for Victoria

The First Nations communities of Lakes Entrance in Victoria are set to benefit from a new Men’s Wellness Centre, as part of the Albanese Labor Government’s efforts to address domestic and family violence.

Gippsland Lakes Complete Health Limited will receive $2.4 million in funding to set up the Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association (LEAHA) Deyettyan Dardiganni Wellness Service project.

The Men’s Wellness Centre will provide a safe space for local men to connect and communicate with Elders, the East Gippsland community, and each other. The program aims to help First Nations men connect with education, housing, healthcare and economic development initiatives that help break the cycle of violence.

This funding is part of a $41.4 million Government investment under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan 2023-2025 to develop 13 new Men’s Wellness Centres for First Nations peoples around Australia.

Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth, said providing targeted, community-led support for men is critical to ending gender-based violence in First Nations communities.

“Together with the other 12 Men’s Wellness Centres the Government is funding around Australia, the Lakes Entrance Centre will help us shift the dial on gender-based violence and better support men to keep their families and communities safe,” Minister Rishworth said.

“With its strong focus on connection to community and culture, the Deyettyan Dardiganni Wellness Service shows the importance of programs delivered for and by First Nations peoples in creating real change.

“Through the new Men’s Wellness Centres, we are ensuring First Nations men have access to the strengths-based, culturally safe services and activities they need to break the cycle of violence.”

Federal Labor Senator for Victoria, Raff Ciccone, said the funding would promote culturally safe practices.

“The Lakes Entrance Centre will support the healing journey of First Nations men and families in Gippsland,” Senator Ciccone said.

“Having an environment where local men can take part in education programs and initiatives is incredibly important.

“That’s why the Albanese Labor Government is investing in the region and is committed to addressing gender-based violence.”

This initiative will also help progress Target 13 under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap 2020-2030 (National Agreement), which aims to reduce all forms of violence against First Nations women and children by at least 50 per cent by 2031.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Boosting conservation efforts via AI

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

Fung Yuen, located in the suburbs of Tai Po and approximately 2km from the town centre, is one of the 12 priority sites for enhanced conservation under the Government’s New Nature Conservation Policy.

The Environmental Association manages Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, providing a suitable habitat for butterflies.

Initially, Fung Yuen hosted about 70 to 80 butterfly species. Over the past 20 years, this number has increased to over 220 species, representing approximately 90% of all butterfly species present in Hong Kong.

    Revolutionising conservation

In addition to continuing its conservation efforts, the association has decided to incorporate smart technology to enhance such initiatives.

Environmental Association Chief Executive Officer Yau Wing-kwong noted that Hong Kong is home to over 200 butterfly species, each having a distinct appearance. Some of the species even look different between dry and wet seasons. As such, accurately identifying these species by visual comparison with reference books is challenging, prompting the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI) system.

Currently in its early stage, the system can identify 10 butterfly species, including Danaus genutia, with high accuracy. The association aims to expand its capabilities to recognise 245 species within two years.

Mr Yau stated that the system will be made public once it operates smoothly, allowing citizens to upload photos of butterflies from the suburbs to identify their species and obtain related information instantly.

He said: “At a later stage, the system will be used for conservation analysis. That means we can put a camera in butterfly gardens that we developed, and then the camera will capture images of butterflies. The system will then tell us how many species have been there, and their relationship to the plants and to the environment.

“And it will help us in the future with how we do the conservation work with even better efficiency and less manpower.”

    Critical funding

The Environmental Association has received funding from the Environment & Conservation Fund and the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme successively to implement the Nature Conservation Management Agreement Project in Fung Yuen.

Furthermore, the AI butterfly identification system is also funded by the latest round of the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme.

Mr Yau expressed gratitude to the Government for its ongoing support.

“Conservation works actually need money and resources. We appreciate the Government’s efforts in providing all these resources, both in monetary terms and support.”

Established in 2018, the Countryside Conservation Office under the Environment & Ecology Bureau co-ordinates and promotes sustainable development in remote countryside areas.

In October 2019, the office launched the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme, which approved 50 projects with total funding of approximately $270 million by the end of 2024.

    High-quality habitats

Environment & Ecology Bureau Countryside Conservation Manager Matthew Tang outlined that the approved projects encompass various topics, including nature conservation and countryside revitalisation. Notably, the nature conservation management agreement projects protect approximately 560 hectares of wetlands and about 10 hectares of traditional farmland, creating suitable habitats for diverse species.

Mr Tang also highlighted the importance of such projects.

“These conservation projects not only maintain a stable number of species in the conservation sites but also continue to record protected species and new species, reflecting that the projects have effectively enhanced the ecological value of the conservation sites.”

Christchurch put on a stunning weekend for the more than 35,000 people attending Electric Avenue each day of the two-day festival.

The event was well managed and organised, with a large security contingent which proved valuable.

Police assisted event security with fence jumpers, minor disorder and assaults, and evictions due to intoxication.

Police were generally pleased with the behaviour of the majority of those attending. However it was disappointing to see some people heavily intoxicated when they arrived at the festival. Unfortunately Police also observed a lot of people under the influence of drugs.

Crowd behaviour when people were leaving the festival was good, with only minor disorder reported in the CBD on Saturday night.

Files second amicus brief in support of the agency

OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta today announced joining a coalition of 23 attorneys general in submitting an amicus brief in National Treasury Employees Union v. Vought, a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s efforts to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Earlier this week, Attorney General Bonta submitted an amicus brief in another case, Mayor and City Council of Baltimore v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In both briefs, the attorneys general argue that the shuttering of the CFPB would cause catastrophic harm to consumer protections nationwide, leaving state agencies with the sole responsibility to protect consumers from conduct regulated by the CFPB.

“The Trump Administration’s takeover of the CFPB is an effort to destroy the federal agency responsible for protecting American families from being exploited by big banks and payday lenders. Eliminating the only federal agency with oversight over big banks puts everyday consumers at higher risk for financial losses, and places higher demands on states like California,” said Attorney General Bonta. “From bank overdraft fees and credit card late fees to medical debt on credit reports, the CFPB has actively worked to make the lives of everyday people better — its loss will have devastating and deep implications for California, and the financial well-being of households across the nation.”

    Background

After examining the fallout of the 2008 financial crisis, Congress concluded the crisis resulted in part from the failure of federal banking and other regulators to address significant consumer protection issues detrimental to both consumers and the safety and soundness of the banking system. In direct response to these events, Congress established the CFPB and tasked it with enforcing numerous federal consumer protection statutes and enacting regulations to further these efforts. For over a decade, the CFPB has served as an invaluable partner to state attorneys general and state banking regulators, both by working to protect consumers against fraudulent and abusive practices and by advancing a fair and level playing field in consumer financial markets by issuing regulations under federal law.

In the last month, the Trump Administration has taken a series of actions intended to debilitate the CFPB, including issuing a suspension of work across the agency, terminating probationary employees, and announcing a decision not to draw additional funding from the Federal Reserve. These actions appear to be part of a unilateral effort to permanently shut down the agency, including programs and operations mandated by federal law.

In the brief, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the attorneys general argue the dismantling of the CFPB will cause irreparable harm to consumers and the states’ own consumer protection enforcement efforts, leave no oversight over large national banks, and will rapidly and substantially increase the burden on state agencies to protect consumers from conduct regulated by the CFPB. The loss of the CFPB’s partnership has concrete and widespread implications: from the sharing of complaints and trend data, to providing training, to partnering on joint investigations and litigations, the CFPB has been a force multiplier for California’s consumer protection efforts.

In filing the brief, Attorney General Bonta joins the attorneys general of New York, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

A copy of the brief can be found here.

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) – For the first time, representatives of the National Directions of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Asia and Oceania are meeting for an intercontinental meeting. The meeting, which is currently taking place in Sydney, will continue until Sunday. The National Directors, who represent more than 20 countries on both continents, including Bangladesh, Cambodia and Laos, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, will focus on the importance of collaboration in relation to the urgencies and hopes that characterize missionary work in the various local situations. The leitmotif of the five days is Pope Francis’ invitation to be “missionaries of hope among the peoples” (see Message for World Mission Sunday 2025). The participants of the meeting sent a message of solidarity in prayer to the Bishop of Rome, who is currently being treated for bilateral pneumonia at Gemelli Hospital in Rome.”The Pontifical Mission Societies in Australia ‘Catholic Mission’ is privileged to host the intercontinental meeting of the National Directors for Asia and Oceania,” said Father Brian Lucas. “Australia has very strong relations with our immediate neighbours, including the support of a regional office in Phnom Penh, and this opportunity for personal exchange provides an excellent basis for cooperation.”The aim is to join forces and find solutions together to respond to local challenges, said the organizers of the meeting, which, in addition to offering training courses (including one on the theme of the Jubilee Year “Pilgrims of Hope”), also offered the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Australian Church, including Archbishop Charles Balvo, Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, and Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM, Bishop of the Diocese of Parramatta. In addition, the National Directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies from Asia and Oceania also met with Ms. Kelly Paget, Chancellor of the Diocese of Broken Bay, who had taken part in the World Synod on Synodality in Rome.”We are trying these days to unite as two regions. Of course, we have different problems, challenges and hopes, and that is what we are discussing here. Our hope is to speak with a united voice and work together for the mission of the Church throughout the world and to bring about concrete change,” said Father Michael Cheng Chai, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in New Zealand. • MIL-OSI Europe: ASIA/SOUTH KOREA – In the Jubilee Year, Catholics entrust themselves to the intercession of Cardinal Stephen Kim, Servant of God

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

    CBCK

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) – Hundreds of people – up to 800 a day – come every day to the Catholic cemetery of Yogin, a city south of Seoul, to visit the tomb of Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan (1922-2009), “Servant of God” and former Archbishop of Seoul, and to entrust themselves to his intercession. In order to commemorate, in the Jubilee Year, the evangelizing impulse that marked the Cardinal in his ministry as a baptized person, priest and bishop – in accordance with the Gospel phrase he often quoted: “You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world” – the Catholic communities of Seoul have organized in recent days the second symposium dedicated to the Cardinal and on February 16 they took part in a memorial mass on the 16th anniversary of his death in the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Seoul.During the Eucharist, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Seoul, Auxiliary Bishop Job Koo Yobi, emphasized that “Cardinal Kim has personally shown today’s believers, even those who do not believe in God, how to live the Gospel.” His testimony will be valuable to Korean believers in the Jubilee year and also in view of World Youth Day, which will take place in Seoul in 2027, said the Auxiliary Bishop.Among the more than a thousand faithful who attended the mass, 200 were active donors to the foundation created in 2010, a year after the death of Cardinal Kim, the “Fool sharing Foundation”, which takes up one of the mottos and proverbs of the Cardinal, who loved to define himself as “a fool of Christ”, adding that “a fool speaks to fools”.The Eucharist was the first commemorative Mass since Cardinal Kim was named a “Servant of God” after the official opening of the diocesan phase of the beatification process in July 2024. The Mass is usually held annually in the cemetery where the cardinal is buried. This year, the celebration in the cathedral was intended to give more people the opportunity to be present, pray and ask for the cardinal’s intercession together.Meanwhile, the symposium dedicated to Cardinal Kim affirmed that the beatification process will only move forward with the “full trust of the people in the intercession of the candidate for beatification and canonization,” explained Fr. Boguslaw Turek, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, who spoke at the conference. The symposium, entitled “The Life, Virtues and Fame of Holiness of Cardinal Stephen Kim Soo-hwan II,” was organized by the Committee for Beatification and Canonization of the Archdiocese of Seoul and the Korean Research Institute of Church History.”Prayers of intercession must continue without interruption,” the Vatican dicastery’s Undersecretary continued. Regarding the recognition of the miracle, Fr. Turek explained that “the prayer of intercession must be offered before the event considered a miracle occurs.”Good work in the diocesan phase of the process helps the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to continue the process, he stressed. The diocesan tribunals must actively question witnesses, conduct historical and archival research, and collect all documents about the candidates in order to carefully and in detail reconstruct their lives and prove their heroic virtues.Father Cho Han-gyu of the Catholic University of Seoul stressed: “Cardinal Kim is the person who has best lived and exemplified the imitation of Christ in our time: an example for all Christians.” Father Koh Jun-seok, parish priest of the Hyehwa-dong parish in the Archdiocese of Seoul, affirmed: “When Cardinal Kim was Archbishop of Seoul, his pastoral letters focused primarily on ‘renewal of the Church and evangelization.’ His work was a multifaceted pastoral service for a community that was called to proclaim the Gospel while celebrating the faith and exercising the service of charity and community: all this he did in a deeply Eucharistic life in which he gave himself completely.” Auxiliary Bishop Job Koo Yobi concluded: “Today’s society seems to be moving in a different direction from that followed by Cardinal Kim. I hope that this event will be an opportunity for many people to follow his exemplary life and virtues.” The memory of the person and work of the Cardinal are promoted and preserved by the “Stephen Cardinal Kim Institute”, a research institute named after him, which manages a historical archive and the publications dedicated to him. • MIL-OSI United Nations: Explainer: 5 common myths about child marriage

    Source: United Nations 2

    22 February 2025 Health

Every day, almost one in five young women are married off while still children, according to the UN reproductive and sexual health agency, UNFPA, which is urging countries to say “I don’t” to child marriage, an illegal practice that is almost universally condemned and yet remains widespread globally.

“I was married at 14, and I lost my first child at 16 during pregnancy,” Ranu Chakma said. Child marriage is common in her village of Teknaf Upazila, on the southern coast of Bangladesh, even though it is illegal and a human rights violation.

Those violations occur even at a time when many countries are banning the illegal practice, most recently in Colombia, where a law came into effect earlier this month.

Here are five common misconceptions about child marriage:

    Myth 1: It’s always illegal

Child marriage is banned under many international agreements, from the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women to the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994. Still, there are 640 million women and girls in the world who were child brides, with more child marriages taking place every day.

How is that possible? Many countries ban child marriage in principle, but define the permissible age of marriage as something other than 18 or permit exceptions with parental consent or under religious or customary law. In many cases these marriages, and marriages in general, are not legally registered, making enforcement of the law difficult.

Addressing child marriage requires more than laws; it requires rethinking how society values girls.

Programmes like Taalim-i-Naubalighan, in Bihar, India, where two in five children marry before age 18, are having an impact. These programmes encourage young people to think about topics such as gender roles and human rights.

“That’s why I was able to help my sister,” said Altamash, a male student whose sister wanted to avoid child marriage and continue her studies. “When I understood her desire and how it would help her, I advocated for her to my father. She is now going to complete her education, and I am so proud of her.”

    © UNFPA Madagascar

In Madagascar, information sessions are key in changing minds and raising awareness about child marriage and other harmful practices.

Myth 2: Sometimes child marriage is necessary

Child marriage remains pervasive in part because it is seen as a solution to other problems.

In humanitarian crises, child marriage rates often rise, with parents believing marriage will secure a daughter’s future by making a husband responsible for economically supporting her and protecting her from violence. Child marriage is seen as a solution that will preserve the honour of a girl and her family after – or in some cases before – she becomes pregnant. In developing countries, the majority of adolescent births take place within a marriage.

Yet, child marriage is not a real solution to any of these issues. Child marriage itself leads to girls experiencing high levels of sexual, physical and emotional violence from their intimate partners. Pregnancy is dangerous for girls; complications of pregnancy and childbirth are one of the leading causes of death among adolescent girls. Child brides and adolescent mothers are often forced to drop out of school, upending their future prospects.

Nicolette, 16, in Madagascar was so accustomed to seeing her classmates disappear from school after marrying and becoming pregnant, she never thought to question the practice. That’s until she attended a UNFPA-supported awareness session.

“I didn’t know that we could be victims of child marriage,” she said. Now, she wants all the girls in her community to know: “Everyone has the right to realise their ambitions, and marriage is a choice.”

    © UNFPA Niger

More than three quarters of girls in Niger are married while they are still children.

Myth 3: This problem is going away

Child marriage may sound like a problem of the past or of faraway places, but in fact it remains a serious threat to girls around the world.

While global child marriage rates are slowly falling, the places with the highest rates also have the most population growth, meaning the absolute number of child marriages is expected to increase.

The problem is indeed global. The largest number of child brides live in the Asia and Pacific region, the highest rate of child marriage is seen in sub-Saharan Africa and lack of progress in Latin America and the Caribbean mean that this region is expected to have the second highest prevalence of child marriage by 2030.

Yet, the issue is not limited to developing nations. It takes place in countries like the United Kingdom and United States, too.

“I was basically introduced to somebody in the morning, and I was forced to marry him that night,” Sara Tasneem said, recalling her marriage, first an informal spiritual union at age 15 then legally at age 16. “I got pregnant right away, and we were legally married in Reno, Nevada, where it only required permission signed by my dad.”

To change this, actions must be accelerated to end child marriage, especially by empowering girls.

“I was 13 years old when my father gave my hand in marriage to a cousin,” 16-year-old Hadiza, in Niger, said. Fortunately, she had access to a safe space through a UNFPA-supported youth programme. “I spoke to a safe space mentor, who, with the help of the neighbourhood chief, negotiated with my parents to postpone the wedding.”

Today, Hadiza is an apprentice to a tailor, learning the skills to become economically self-sufficient. “In three years I plan to get married to the man I love,” she said.

Myth 4: It’s a cultural or religious issue

Child marriage is sometimes misrepresented as a religiously or culturally mandated practice. But, there are no major religious traditions that require child marriage.

In fact, cultural and religious leaders around the world often take a strong stance against child marriage, especially when provided evidence about the consequences of the practice.

“We have always taught young people that, both religiously and legally, it was not advisable,” Shirkhan Chobanov, the imam of Jumah Mosque in Tbilisi, Georgia, said. “We also explained to those young people that they had to accomplish other tasks, primarily concerning their education, before thinking about starting a family.”

UNFPA works with faith leaders around the world who are working to end child marriage, including priests, monks, nuns and imams.

“We are seeing very good results as far as warding off child marriage is concerned,” said Gebreegziabher Tiku, a priest in Ethiopia.

Myth 5: It only happens to girls

While the vast majority of child marriages involve girls, boys can also be married off.

Globally, 115 million boys and men were married before age 18, according to 2019 data. These unions are also linked to early fatherhood, constrained education and reduced opportunities in life.

Still, girls are disproportionately affected by the practice, with about one in five young women aged 20 to 24 years old married before their 18th birthday, compared to one in 30 young men. Child marriage rates for boys are very low even in countries where child marriage among girls is relatively high.

    © UNFPA Nicaragua

Youth empowerment programmes are reaching all adolescents with information about their human rights in Nicaragua, which has one of the highest rates of child marriage among boys.

No matter the gender of the child affected nor the country in which the union takes place, child marriage is a harmful practice that requires addressing a common set of root causes. They include economic inequality, limited access to sexual and reproductive health services and information, and factors such as conflict. One of the biggest root causes – gender inequality – requires urgent and renewed focus.

“While we have abolished child marriage, we have not abolished predatory masculinity,” said Dr. Gabrielle Hosein, director of the Institute of Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies, in Trinidad and Tobago, shortly after that country had outlawed child marriage.

Kevin Liverpool, an activist with the advocacy group CariMAN, said men and boys have a critical role to play.

“It’s important to raise awareness among these groups, among these individuals, about what feminism is, why gender equality is important for women, but also for men and for all of society,” he said.

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s new visa-free policy for ASEAN tour groups boosts tourism, cultural bonds

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

China’s new visa-free policy for ASEAN tour groups boosts tourism, cultural bonds

KUNMING, Feb. 22 — On Friday, a group of 15 tourists from Thailand and Laos wrapped up their four-day trip to southwest China’s Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, boarding the China-Laos Railway for their return journey.

It is the first tour group from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states to travel to the prefecture since China introduced its new visa relaxation policy. Since Feb. 10, tour groups from ASEAN countries have been allowed to visit Xishuangbanna, a popular tourist destination in Yunnan Province, without a visa for up to six days.

China and ASEAN have long been key tourist markets for each other. Official data showed that in 2024, Xishuangbanna received 319,500 overseas visitors, a year-on-year increase of 264.67 percent. Laos, Thailand and Myanmar were the top contributors.

This visa exemption policy marks the start of a new chapter in cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN, said Qi Xiaobo from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, adding that it signals China’s dedication to strengthening ties with the regional bloc.

    GROWING TOURISM INDUSTRY

“Still want more,” Somnham Sithone, a Lao tourist in the group, said after visiting Xishuangbanna Virgin Forest Park. He also experienced a 7D movie featuring the Mekong River. “It is a perfect blend of nature and technology. I hope to explore more places in China.”

Guided by a local travel agency, the tour group was immersed in natural scenery, sampled local cuisine and experienced Dai ethnic culture, including a traditional Dai dance and a water blessing ceremony.

“Even though they are the first group with visa-free access, coordination between the border inspection bureau, public security bureau and travel agency has been smooth and efficient,” said Yu Hanla, the group’s tour guide.

According to Jiang Jie, deputy director of the culture and tourism bureau of Xishuangbanna, the prefecture has launched 18 tourist routes, offering the opportunity to explore the area’s heritage and experience its culture.

“We are designing more diverse routes tailored to ASEAN tourists, including tropical rainforest adventures and ethnic cultural activities,” said Liu Jun, general manager of a local travel agency.

The influx of tourists is also a boon for hospitality, travel agencies and other sectors, and promotes the development of infrastructure, Qi said. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing services for international visitors, such as multilingual guides and signage, and financial services.

Yu, who has nearly 10 years of experience as a tour guide and speaks both Thai and Lao in addition to her native tongue, returned to her hometown of Xishuangbanna from Beijing after the launch of the China-Laos Railway. “It is fulfilling to work in my hometown, and it provides a good income,” she said.

    DEEPENING CULTURAL TIES

Cultural exchanges between China and ASEAN are expanding beyond tourism. As Chinese culture gains influence across the region, an increasing number of people from ASEAN countries are eager to learn the Chinese language.

Fluent in Mandarin, Le Anh Lien, a 24-year-old from Vietnam, introduces Vietnamese specialties to customers in a cross-border food shop at Tianbao Port in Malipo County. Her language proficiency helped her secure her first job in Yunnan.

According to a report from VietnamWorks, a job platform in Vietnam, students proficient in Chinese have an almost 100 percent chance of securing employment after graduation.

The number of Lao students learning Chinese is also on the rise, with many pursuing vocational training in fields like logistics, e-commerce, tourism management and sports, said Zhou Bo, head of a vocational school in Mengla County in Xishuangbanna, adding that the school expects to welcome more than 500 new Lao students on Sunday.

Data shows that the number of exchange students between China and ASEAN countries has surpassed 175,000, and collaborative projects between schools continue to grow, expanding the talent pool for both sides.

“People-to-people exchanges between China and ASEAN are entering a new stage, with deeper cooperation in tourism, culture and other fields,” said Jia Chaozhishan with the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Albanese pledge: nine in ten GP visits bulk billed by 2030, in $8.5 billion Medicare injection

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Michelle Grattan, Professorial Fellow, University of Canberra

The Albanese government on Sunday will pledge $8.5 billion for Medicare, declaring this would enable all Australians to have access to bulk billing by 2030.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce the policy at a rally in Tasmania, where the Labor seat of Lyons and the Liberal seat of Bass are in play.

Under the plan, Labor would extend the bulk billing incentive to all Australians, and also create an extra incentive payment for practices that bulk billed all their patients.

The changes would mean an extra 18 million bulk billed GP visits annually, the government says. Nine out of ten GP visits would be bulk billed by 2030. On the government’s figures, this would increase the number of fully bulk billing practices to about 4,800, triple the present figure.

The government says its plan would produce patient savings of up to $859 million a year by 2030.

It says this is the single largest investment in Medicare since it was created more than 40 years ago.

The promised big health spend is designed both to focus the election campaign on an area of traditional strength for Labor, and to address the serious erosion of bulk billing rates in recent years. The rate is currently down to about 78%.

The health package also promises to boost the number of nurses and doctors in the system. Four hundred nursing scholarships would be provided. By 2028 2,000 new GP trainee places would be funded each year in federally-funded GP training programs. The number funded in 2025 is 1600.

The government has peviously tripled the bulk billing incentive for pensioners, concession card holders and families with children. From November 1, that would be widened to all Australians.

Also from November 1, in addition to the bulk billing incentive, practices that fully bulk billed would receive an extra 12.5% loading on their Medicare rebates.

“The combined investment means around 4,800 practices will be in a better financial position if they adopt full bulk billing,” Albanese and Health Minister Mark Butler said in a statement.

Albanese said the plan “will make Medicare even stronger, help with cost of living pressures and ensure every Australian receives the best health care that they deserve”.

Butler said people would be worse off if Peter Dutton became PM. “Peter Dutton tried to end bulk billing with a GP tax and then started a six-year freeze to Medicare rebates that froze GP incomes and stripped billions out of Medicare.”

    Proposed New Bulk Billing Arrangments

The table below shows how total Medicare payments for common visits would increase from November 1, with the expansion of the bulk billing incentive to all Australians and the new incentive payment for practices that bulk billed every patient.

The bulk billing incentive is scaled according to how far a general practice is from a major city or metropolitan area, with larger Medicare payments as communities get more remote.

The total cost of the bulk billing initiatives over the forward estimates is nearly $7.9 billion.

    The costs year-by -year are: 2025-26, nearly $1.2 billion; 2026-27, nearly $2 billion; 2027-28, $2.3 billion, and 2028-29, $2.4 billion.

The government said most of the cost of the Medicare package is accounted for the the December budget update and the rest would be in the next budget.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners this month called for the extension of bulk billing incentives to those under 35. It said this would boost the national rate to 85%.

The Greens have called for tripling the bulk billing incentive for everyone with a Medicare card.

Michelle Grattan does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI Security: The 18th Wing launches new airspace and range management facility

Source: United States INDO PACIFIC COMMAND

The 18th Wing is expanding the critical command and control capabilities with the 18th Operations Support Squadron’s Airspace and Range Management Facility.

These new capabilities, such as communications and radar common operating picture, are scheduled for phased investments throughout 2025, further augmenting the facility’s ability to ensure critical access to training and operational spaces supporting joint force readiness.

The facility achieved initial operational capabilities in November of 2023, but these new changes further cement the increased regional airspace and range management capabilities the facility brings to bear.

The facility will play a central role in regional security by integrating with U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and Japan Self-Defense Force range controls. The joint management facility helps oversee the complex airspace structure surrounding Okinawa and is a designated touch point for coordination among airspace users and adjacent air navigation service providers.

“The 18th Wing worked closely with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Pacific Multi-Domain Training and Experimentation Capability office, or PMTEC,” said U.S Air Force Lt. Col. Danielle Michel, 18th Operations Support Squadron commander. “Allowing us to identify key operations toward bolstering our ability to achieve mission success in collaboration with our joint and host nation partners.”

The U.S.-led Kadena Radar Approach Control was officially decommissioned March 30, 2010, with its arrival control functions transferred to the Government of Japan, which is responsible for air traffic services to both civilian and military aircraft within the Okinawa area.

After a $52 million comprehensive redesign, the 18 OSS achieved targeted development milestones in 2024 via project alignment with U.S. Forces Japan, Pacific Air Forces, and the GOJ. Improvements include an increase in specialized personnel as well as critical infrastructure modernization to replace aging systems and networks.

Regional alignment will posture the facility for further development hosting mission-critical operations and future support of live, virtual, and constructive training integration, reinforcing the 18th Wing’s role as a center of tactical innovation.

Throughout the competition Pacific Marines, Sailors and officers with the Honolulu Police Department trained and competed for a week for the opportunity to be invited to the Marine Corps Marksmanship Championship at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

While the event is a competition, the true goal of MCMC-PAC is to advance the lethality of the Corps and build camaraderie across a multitude of experience and backgrounds.

“My favorite part is getting to see the shooters grow and develop as marksmen, as well as Marines,” said Sgt. Dylan Kelley, an instructor and competitor with the Marine Corps Shooting Team, “We’re giving the Marines an opportunity to come out here, compete against their peers, compete against fellow Marines and give them a chance to see where they are at.”

Kelley instructed approximately 72 shooters throughout the competition. Those shooters ranged from first time competitors to veteran shooters, all with various capabilities with their weapon system.

“It takes the ‘Every Marine a Rifleman’ and actually makes it a true statement,” says Master Gunnery Sgt. Derrick R. Stanfield, intelligence chief, G-2, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, and competitor since 2012. “It applies a lethality factor.”

Throughout the event, competitors participated in three training days, one individual pistol match, consisting of four stages, and two individual rifle matches, both consisting of two stages. Following the individual matches, the teams battled it out in a team pistol and rifle match.

Winners of each match not only get invited to compete in championships but were awarded both trophies and medals for their accomplishments.

“Two years ago, I was lucky enough to place bronze,” said Capt. Tyler Ashton, commander, Headquarters and Service Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, MARFORPAC, and team captain of MARFORPAC’s rifle team, “Getting a group of 22 Marines out of the office to come out and shoot is important for morale and skills, and I am happy to be a part of it.”

After all the rounds were scored and the aroma of gunpowder floated towards the horizon, the Marine Corps Shooting Team awarded the victors.

Staff Sgt. Christian Cachola, operations chief, Marine Corps Shooting team, won gold for rifle with an overall combined score of 188.24%

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Albanese Government provides tax relief to support investment and jobs

    Source: Minister for Trade

The Albanese Labor Government will provide tax relief for Australia’s distillers, brewers and wine producers.

Currently brewers and distillers get a full refund of any excise paid up to $350,000 each year. The Government will increase the excise remission cap to $400,000 for all eligible alcohol manufacturers. The Government will also increase the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) producer rebate to $400,000.

Adjusting the taxation arrangements will back an important local industry as well as supporting regional tourism, investment and job creation. Currently around 1,500 brewers and distillers and 3,000 wine producers access these tax incentives.

The proposal will apply from 1 July 2026.

In addition to the tax relief, the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) will be providing Australian distillers, brewers and wine producers with additional support to help them grow their exports in high priority overseas markets.

This support includes the opportunity to join in trade missions, expert advice and connections to help our small and medium size exporters tap into fast growing markets, including in Southeast Asia and beyond.

The tax relief is estimated to decrease tax receipts by $70 million over five years from 2024-25.

Quotes attributable to the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:

“To build Australia’s future, we need strong small and medium sized businesses generating jobs and economic opportunity for Australians.

“This common sense measure will back thriving local industries and open the way for growth.”

Quotes attributable to the Treasurer Jim Chalmers:

“We’re pleased to have found room in a tight budget to provide some tax relief for a really important industry creating jobs and opportunities around Australia.

“Brewers, distillers and winemakers play a large role in many local economies and this support will help them invest and grow.”

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell:

“Supporting small distillery, brewing and wine businesses is not just about producing exceptional products – it’s about creating jobs, fostering local economies, and building a better Australia.

“By boosting our export support for these businesses, we are helping fast-track their success in international markets which will create even more jobs at home.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Rural News – Farmers celebrate more funding for QEII Trust – Federated Farmers

    Source: Federated Farmers

A funding boost for the QEII National Trust is a win for farmers and the environment, Federated Farmers vice president Colin Hurst says.
Following strong advocacy from Federated Farmers, the Government have announced an additional $4.5 million for the trust over the next three years.
“When it comes to environmental bang for your taxpayer buck, I can’t think of a better investment than the QEII Trust,” Hurst says.
“But despite the amazing work they do in our rural communities to improve biodiversity and other environmental outcomes, the trust hasn’t had an increase in funding for over a decade.
“During that time the trust has faced huge inflationary pressures and a 28% increase in demand for their services.
“Today’s announcement may not be the doubling of funding Federated Farmers called for, but it’s certainly a positive step in the right direction and will do a lot of good.”
The QEII National Trust was established in 1977, with Federated Farmers dairy chair (the late) Gordon Stephenson a key instigator.
The trust partners with landowners who are willing to voluntarily protect their land without selling or donating it.
Covenants ensure special areas of bush, wetland and biodiversity are protected for future generations, in perpetuity.
There are now more than 5,200 covenants covering 187,774 hectares – the vast majority on farms.
“Without an increase in funding the QEII Trust would have been forced to scale back the number of new covenants it could support,” Hurst says,
“That would have been a huge setback for nature, and the ongoing efforts of many farmers who are committed to protecting special areas of biodiversity on their land.”
Federated Farmers has been given a 30-minute slot in front of the Primary Production Committee to explain why it believes the trust deserves more support.
“We’ll certainly be taking up that opportunity and making a strong case for further funding increases that will allow the trust to expand their work.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Critics condemn ‘cowardly’ BBC for pulling Gaza warzone youth survival documentary

    By Gizem Nisa Cebi

The BBC has removed its documentary Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone from iPlayer after it was revealed that its teenage narrator is the son of a Hamas official.

The broadcaster stated that it was conducting “further due diligence” following mounting scrutiny.

The film, which aired on BBC Two last Monday, follows 13-year-old Abdullah Al-Yazouri as he describes life in Gaza.

However, it later emerged that his father, Ayman Al-Yazouri, serves as the Hamas Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Gaza.

In a statement yesterday, the BBC defended the documentary’s value but acknowledged concerns.

“There have been continuing questions raised about the programme, and in light of these, we are conducting further due diligence with the production company,” the statement said.

The revelation sparked a backlash from figures including Friday Night Dinner actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, literary agent Neil Blair, and former BBC One boss Danny Cohen, who called it “a shocking failure by the BBC and a major crisis for its reputation”.

On Thursday, the BBC admitted that it had not disclosed the family connection but insisted it followed compliance procedures. It has since added a disclaimer acknowledging Abdullah’s ties to Hamas.

UK’s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said that she would discuss the issue with the BBC, particularly regarding its vetting process.

However, the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians urged the broadcaster to “stand firm against attempts to prevent firsthand accounts of life in Gaza from reaching audiences”.

Others also defended the importance of the documentary made last year before the sheer scale of devastation by the Israeli military forces was exposed — and many months before the ceasefire came into force on January 19.

    ‘This documentary humanised Palestinian children’
Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU), criticised the BBC’s decision.

“It’s very regrettable that this documentary has been pulled following pressure from anti-Palestinian activists who have largely shown no sympathy for persons in Gaza suffering from massive bombardment, starvation, and disease,” Middle East Eye quoted him as saying.

Doyle also praised the film’s impact, saying, “This documentary humanised Palestinian children in Gaza and gave valuable insights into life in this horrific war zone.”

Journalist Richard Sanders, who has produced multiple documentaries on Gaza, called the controversy a “huge test” for the BBC and condemned its response as a “cowardly decision”.

Earlier this week, 45 Jewish journalists and media figures, including former BBC governor Ruth Deech, urged the broadcaster to pull the film, calling Ayman Al-Yazouri a “terrorist leader”.

The controversy underscores wider tensions over media coverage of the Israel-Gaza war, with critics accusing the BBC of a vetting failure, while others argue the documentary sheds crucial light on Palestinian children’s suffering.

Pacific Media Watch comments: The BBC has long been accused of an Israeli-bias in its coverage of Palestinian affairs, especially the 15-month genocidal war on Gaza, and this documentary is one of the rare programmes that has restored some balance.

New energy vehicle market poised for growth driven by technological innovations, says GlobalData

    Posted in Automotive

The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) at the forefront of this change. The new energy vehicle (NEV) market is dynamic in nature and is poised for growth as economic conditions improve and technological innovations continue to emerge, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

According to GlobalData, the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) market in Europe and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region experienced a period of stagnation in 2024; however, a robust rebound is projected for 2025.

Madhuchhanda Palit, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The positive outlook is supported by declining interest rates and the introduction of more competitive vehicle offerings. In particular, government policies in China, including the purchase tax exemption extension until 2027 for NEVs, are expected to invigorate the market, with BEVs poised to play a dominant role in both the short and long term.”

Moreover, recent upgrades to emission regulations, which impose stricter standards, will serve as significant catalysts for the adoption of NEVs. For example, India plans to implement the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) phase 3 regulations in 2027 and phase 4 in 2032. These stringent fleet carbon dioxide (CO2) limitations will compel original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to either enhance their internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains or increase the sales of EVs within the passenger vehicle sector.

Additionally, significant policy changes, particularly in China, are influencing the market dynamics. The purchase tax exemption and the introduction of a dual-invoice system for swappable battery vehicles are expected to enhance the appeal of EVs.

Palit adds: “Government incentives, such as tax rebates and subsidies, play a crucial role in encouraging the adoption of EVs, as seen in the success stories of Norway and Denmark. In the US, the ongoing dilemma about policy change might create tricky and unfavorable conditions for domestic automakers and establish market dominance for Tesla.”

Technological advancements are pivotal in driving the market forward. Toyota‘s launch of the world’s first hydrogen hybrid vehicle and CATL’s unveiling of the “Freevoy” supercharging hybrid battery exemplify the industry’s commitment to innovation. These developments, along with the standardization of hybrid technology by automakers like Toyota and Honda, are making new energy vehicles more accessible and appealing to consumers. The expansion of charging infrastructure and government incentives further supports the growth, addressing range anxiety, and increasing overall awareness of the benefits of NEVs among consumers.

Palit concludes: “The future of hybrids and EVs looks bright, driven by a combination of favorable economic conditions, strategic policy changes, and breakthrough technological advancements. As the market share for ICEs declines, the rise of new energy vehicles is a testament to the industry’s adaptability to sustainable transportation solutions. Ongoing innovations in technology and infrastructure promise a greener and more efficient automotive landscape.”

The Chinese animated movie “Ne Zha 2” has seen its box office revenue worldwide, including presales, surpass 13 billion yuan (about $1.8 billion), according to ticketing platforms.

The blockbuster has made headlines with a list of spectacular records. It established itself as China’s all-time top-grossing film as early as Feb. 6, just nine days after its release during the Chinese New Year.

Following the tale of Nezha, an iconic boy god from Chinese mythology, the animation later became the first film to gross $1 billion in a single market. It then entered the global box office top 10 and secured the throne as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time globally.

The Chinese milestone film has opened in overseas markets, including Australia, New Zealand and North America.

With rich storytelling and jaw-dropping visuals, it has drawn many Nezha fans in China to revisit cinemas and contribute more to the still-rising box office receipts. According to the movie’s official Weibo account, its release on Chinese big screens has been extended until March 30.

Despite the conclusion of the Spring Festival holiday and the winter vacation, a prime moviegoing season, insiders have anticipated the domestic box office to culminate at around 15 billion yuan.

Largely driven by the glittering Nezha phenomenon and a strong film market performance during the holiday, China’s domestic box office revenue of 2025 has exceeded 21 billion yuan as of Saturday, roughly half of that for the whole year of 2024, according to ticketing platform Maoyan.
