  • MIL-OSI: 21Shares Spotlights Solana’s Breakout Year in New “State of Crypto” Report

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

New report explores Solana’s rise as the infrastructure layer of next-gen finance

Zurich, 12 May 2025 – 21Shares, one of the world’s largest issuers of cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs), today announced the release of the 14th edition of its flagship research series, State of Crypto, featuring an in-depth spotlight on Solana.

With ultra-high speed, near-zero fees, and a rapidly expanding ecosystem, Solana has emerged as a leading blockchain powering everything from cross-border payments to AI and decentralised physical infrastructure. The new report explores Solana’s evolution into a real-world financial layer, and why it is fast becoming the blockchain of choice for both developers and institutions.

“Solana is redefining what’s possible with blockchain technology,” said Adrian Fritz, Head of Research at 21Shares. “It combines performance, usability, and scale in a way few networks can match. In this report, we unpack the numbers, the tech, and the trends behind Solana’s rise, and what that means for investors.”

    The report includes:

    • A detailed comparison between Solana and leading competitors such as Ethereum, Sui, and TON.
    • In-depth sector analyses of Solana’s growing ecosystem, including DePIN, AI agents, DeFi innovation, and the memecoin phenomenon.
    • A comprehensive valuation framework to evaluate whether Solana is currently undervalued relative to its peers.
    • Insights into Solana’s role within a diversified crypto portfolio and how it can enhance broader asset allocation strategies.

Solana now processes over 3,000 transactions per second with transaction fees consistently below $0.01. During peak activity in January, it surpassed $364 billion in on-chain volume, matching the throughput of Nasdaq over the same period. With major integrations from Visa, Shopify, and PayPal, along with emerging innovations like Solana Blinks and the Saga smartphone, Solana is rapidly positioning itself as the foundational infrastructure layer for the next generation of the internet.

21Shares offers the 21Shares Solana Core Staking ETP (ticker: CSOL), an exchange-traded product that allows investors to gain exposure to Solana without directly holding the asset. CSOL has a management fee of 0.35%, is 100% physically backed, and also benefits from staking rewards, which are seamlessly generated by adding the yield to the investor’s coin entitlement.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Cultural Marathon at the Polytechnic: Foreign Students Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Preparatory Faculty

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University – Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University –

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the preparatory faculty of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, a series of events dedicated to the history and culture of our country were held for foreign students.

20 best students from Angola, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Yemen, China, Myanmar, Palestine, Turkmenistan and Turkey went to a three-day cultural and educational intensive course “Polytechnic in History and Culture” at the Kholomki estate. The guys immersed themselves in the atmosphere of Russian estate life in a historical complex associated with the name of the first director of the Polytechnic – Prince Andrei Grigorievich Gagarin.

The participants not only learned about the life of the prince and the fate of his estate, but also visited Gagarin’s grave in the village of Belskoye Ustye, paying tribute to the memory of the university’s founder.

This brought us even closer together! Thank you for the opportunity to relax, find friends and celebrate the faculty anniversary, – shared Mustafa Rozyev from Turkmenistan.

The educational program was prepared by teachers of the Higher School of International Educational Programs (HSIEEP). There were team-building trainings, quizzes on Russian history and modern culture, and a volleyball match, where international student teams competed with teachers. Indian student Gupta Purvi remembered volleyball the most: It was fun and adventurous, and the teachers were as passionate as we were.

Jonathan Abel from Indonesia admitted that he especially enjoyed the night songs around the campfire under the starry sky: The teachers sang so beautifully that even those who did not know the words joined in with the melodies.

Yemeni student Al-Falah Naif expressed his delight poetically: Nature whispered its secrets to us… These days will become a page in my future novel.

Before returning to St. Petersburg, the group honored the memory of the victims of Nazism at the Dulag 100 memorial near Porkhov, where a transit camp was located during the war. The children were reminded that this year Russia solemnly celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Another group of students from Mexico, China, Turkmenistan, France, Thailand and Slovakia visited the State Museum of the History of Religion. They began their journey with the halls of Christian symbols, where guides gave detailed information about ancient icons, church utensils and the history of Orthodoxy in Russia. Rare exhibits, such as a reconstruction of a 17th-century altar with preserved frescoes, attracted special attention. In the Catholicism department, the participants learned about the connection between European religious traditions and Russian culture.

Students from Turkmenistan particularly noted the halls dedicated to Islam.

It’s unexpected to see familiar religious symbols in Russia, it brings us even closer together,” shared Matyakub Yusupov.

The events not only strengthened intercultural ties, but also became a bridge between the past and present of the Polytechnic University, reminding us of its rich heritage, and helped to form a sense of belonging to the cultural heritage. The organizers are confident that such projects help foreign students to understand Russia more deeply and feel part of a large university family.

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

Speech by SLW at plenary session of Seventh APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting (2) (English only) (with photo)
Good afternoon, chair and distinguished fellow ministers,

It is a privilege to speak before this distinguished assembly on a topic of paramount importance to the continued success of every economy. That is talent and manpower. In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, an economy’s ability to adapt and succeed hinges on the dynamism and resilience of its workforce and how well it responds to the demands of future jobs.

Based on our forecast, Hong Kong, China would face an overall manpower shortage of 180 000 in 2028, with over one-third being skilled technical workers. Broader trends such as economic restructuring, technology advancement, business automation and digitalisation across industries would alter demand for job roles and skills in the market. According to a study by the IMF (International Monetary Fund), nearly 40 per cent of jobs globally are likely to be impacted by AI, in particular in high-skill sectors.

It is necessary for our workforce to continuously equip themselves with new and relevant skills to stay competitive in the evolving job market. This includes acquiring AI-related competencies, digital skills and other technical expertise that are increasingly in demand. At the same time, workers must also strengthen their adaptability, embrace lifelong learning and be open to change.

Hong Kong, China makes significant investment in education to provide our young people with diversified and quality education and promote whole-person development. The huge investment we make in education allows the young to choose their own articulation pathways and join different industries according to their interests and abilities.

To further elevate the status of vocational and professional education and training, we are pressing ahead with the establishment of universities of applied sciences (UAS), providing a pathway to success for young people who aspire to pursue a career in professional skilled sectors. The Hong Kong Metropolitan University and Saint Francis University were qualified as the first two UAS in Hong Kong, China.

We have also supported the Vocational Training Council to provide a comprehensive system of vocational education and training services. The council offers more than 1 000 in-service training short courses annually to upgrade skills and knowledge with over a hundred thousand of student enrolments every year. Furthermore, the Employees Retraining Board provides eligible trainees with market-driven and employment-oriented courses to assist them in joining or rejoining the labour market. The Board currently offers more than 700 training courses straddling 28 industry areas.

To address the challenges of the ageing population and shortage of manpower supply, Hong Kong, China has implemented various well-received talent attraction measures since end-2022. The statistics of admission applications prove that Hong Kong, China is the preferred destination for outside talent. As at end-March 2025, we received over 460 000 new applications and approved over 300 000 cases.

To build a quality talent pool for future development, we are reforming various aspects of our talent admission regime. We will shortly invite top and leading talent to come to Hong Kong, China for development so as to better realise our role as an international hub for high calibre talent. We will also allow young non-degree talent with professional and technical qualifications and experience to come to Hong Kong, China to join trades facing manpower shortage.

Looking ahead, Hong Kong, China will closely monitor the employment market, continuously review manpower policies, strengthen training and employment support and encourage employers to provide a favourable work environment with a view to facilitating greater participation in the labour market and fostering sustainable economic development.

    Thank you.

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

    Sunday, 11 May 2025

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Pope Leo entrusts his prayer for peace to Mary, the “Queen of Peace,” “so that she may present it to the Lord Jesus to obtain for us the miracle of peace.” With this, Pope Leo XIV concluded his brief address, delivered from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after the first Regina Coeli following his election as Successor of Peter. A brief speech in which the Bishop of Rome addressed the conflicts in the world and reiterated the words spoken by Paul VI in his famous speech to the UN: “Never again war!” “Eighty years ago, on May 8,” the Pope began his address after the blessing, “the immense tragedy of the Second World War ended, which claimed sixty million victims. In today’s dramatic scenario of a piecemeal third world war, as Pope Francis stated many times, I too address the world’s leaders, repeating the ever-timely appeal: “Never again war!”.”I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people,” Pope Leo continued. “May everything possible be done to reach an authentic, just and lasting peace, as soon as possible. Let all the prisoners be freed and the children return to their own families.”The Bishop of Rome then said he was “deeply saddened” by “what is happening in the Gaza Strip: may there be an immediate ceasefire! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population, and let all the hostages be freed!”Pope Leo welcomed with satisfaction the “announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan” hoping “that through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting accord may be reached soon. But how many other conflicts there are in the world! I entrust this heartfelt appeal to the Queen of Peace, so that she may present it to the Lord Jesus to obtain for us the miracle of peace.””Today in Italy and in other countries we celebrate Mother’s Day,” the Pope concluded. “I send a fond greeting to all mothers, with a prayer for them, and for those who are already in Heaven.” (F.B.) • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: HB organises Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition x Arena of Construction Robots to advance applications of construction technologies

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

The Housing Bureau (HB) organised the Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition x Arena of Construction Robots today (May 12) to promote the adoption of industry technologies and advance public housing developments into a new era of smart construction.

To expedite the speed and efficiency of increasing the public housing supply and address the challenge of an ageing workforce and construction manpower shortages, the HB and the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) are leveraging innovative construction technologies to boost productivity and improve safety. As part of the Housing•I&T initiative, the HB will host a series of events, including today’s robotics competition, a housing construction robot design competition for secondary school students in September, and an international summit in November aimed at fostering the development of a construction technology market. The Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition x Arena of Construction Robots is the first highlight of this initiative. The event provides the industry with a platform to test and demonstrate their technological products, allowing participants to fully explore and maximise the development potential of innovative construction technologies.

A Mainland robotics company has already partnered with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to establish a joint research institute for a few years to promote and strengthen co-operation between the university and industry in the development of robotics technology. The HKHA anticipates that the use of robotics will gradually become more prevalent, and has thus incorporated requirements for such use in its tender documents. By leveraging the stable and substantial volume of public housing projects and diverse application areas, the HKHA aims to attract Mainland robotics companies to progressively deploy their technologies in public housing initiatives. Acting as a “super connector” and a “super value-adder”, the HKHA actively seeks and validates tailored robotics solutions that meet industry needs while promoting successful cases to the sector. As a result, several robotics companies subsequently have decided to expand their business operations in Hong Kong, using it as a springboard to enter markets in Singapore, the Middle East and Europe. It is believed that the establishment of more innovation and technology (I&T) enterprises in Hong Kong will further drive the vibrant development of the city’s I&T ecosystem.

At the event’s opening ceremony, the Secretary for Housing, Ms Winnie Ho, said, “According to the indicators for specific tasks as in the Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address on construction robots, the HKHA will specify in tender documents the construction processes where robots can be employed to enhance site safety and construction efficiency. The highlight of today’s event is the painting robots participating in the Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition. The application of construction robots not only boosts productivity and quality but also creates a safer and healthier working environment for frontline workers. This advancement elevates the technological standards and professional image of the industry, making it more appealing to young professionals. A recent case of a public housing project demonstrates that collaborative painting robot systems can enhance the efficiency of indoor painting works by over 50 per cent and improve works quality. For instance, in a public housing project with a standard floor comprising 24 units, traditional methods require eight skilled workers for wall finishing, while only two operators are needed when using a robotics system.”

In addition to contractual requirements, the HKHA will continue to expand the scope of subsidies available for contractors adopting construction robots through the Government’s Construction Innovation and Technology Fund. This two-pronged strategy will encourage the industry to widely adopt innovative technologies and establish a new “human-machine collaborative housing construction model”.

The robots participating in today’s Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition were evaluated by a jury panel, comprising Ms Ho and representatives from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Construction Industry Council and industry experts. The judging criteria encompassed technical performance, efficiency and productivity, quality of painting and safety.

The results of the Construction Robots for Housing – RoboPaint Master Competition are as follows:
Grand Award: Bright Dream (HK) Construction Technology Limited, Weibuild Technology HK Limited
1st Runner-up: Fangshi Technology Company Limited, Fulltime Robotics Company Limited
2nd Runner-up: HONGKONG DAFANG AI CO., LIMITED

The Construction Robots for Housing – Arena of Construction Robots showcased six types of robots with potential applications in public housing construction. These included a rebar-tying robot, a floor-tiling robot, a steel frame-cutting robot, a six-metre tall three-in-one wall-painting robot, a concrete internal wall-grinding robot and an autonomous small unmanned aircraft for scanning. Live demonstrations of these robots provided contractors with insights into the latest developments in innovative construction technologies, encouraging broader industry adoption and further advancing the sector’s development.

Currently, construction robotics systems have been implemented in over 20 public housing development projects, with an additional 30 projects expected to follow by 2027.

  • MIL-OSI China: China, US announce measures to ease tariff tensions

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

China and the United States announced here Monday a series of tariff modification measures aimed at easing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The decision followed a two-day China-U.S. high-level meeting on economic and trade affairs, where both sides recognized the importance of their bilateral economic and trade relationship to both countries and the global economy, a joint statement said, noting that both sides emphasized the need for a sustainable, long-term and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationship.

According to the statement, the United States will place a 90-day pause on 24 percentage points of the additional ad valorem rate of duty on articles of China (including articles of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macau Special Administrative Region) starting from April 2, while retaining the remaining rate of 10 percent on those articles. It will also remove the additional tariff rates on imports from China announced on April 8 and 9 respectively.

According to the Executive Order 14259 issued on April 8 by the White House, the United States raised “reciprocal” tariff rate on China to 84 percent. One day later, the White House in another executive order hiked rate to 125 percent.

Ad valorem tax is a tax based on the assessed value of assets, goods or services being taxed.

China will modify accordingly the application of the additional ad valorem rate of duty on articles of the United States set forth in Announcement of the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council No. 4 of 2025, by suspending 24 percentage points of that rate for an initial period of 90 days, while retaining the remaining additional ad valorem rate of 10 percent on those articles.

It will remove the modified additional ad valorem rates of duty on those articles imposed by the No. 5 and No. 6 announcements issued by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council on April 9 and 11 respectively.

China will also adopt all necessary administrative measures to suspend or remove the non-tariff countermeasures taken against the United States since April 2, 2025.

The two sides commit to take the actions by May 14.

The two sides will also establish a mechanism to continue discussions about economic and trade relations. These discussions may be conducted alternately in China and the United States, or a third country upon agreement of the Parties, the statement said.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: African Mining Week to Connect Junior Miners with African Prospects, Global Investors

Source: Africa Press Organisation – English (2) – Report:

    CAPE TOWN, South Africa, May 12, 2025/APO Group/ —

The upcoming African Mining Week – scheduled for October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town – will feature a dedicated Junior Mining Forum that will connect emerging mining companies with investors, industry experts and potential partners.

The forum will showcase the role played by junior miners in driving the growth of the African extractive sector as African countries capitalize on the growing global demand for minerals to drive economic development.

Junior mining companies are driving innovation, discovering new deposits, bringing new projects online and creating opportunities for the growth of Africa’s mining sector.

In Tanzania, UK-listed Marula Mining began manganese production in March, 2025 and plans to start operations at its Kinusi copper project later this year. Australia’s Walkabout Resources is also ramping up output at the Lindi Jumbo Graphite Project in Tanzania, which boasts some of Africa’s highest-grade flake graphite ore reserves.

In Zimbabwe, Kavango Resources secured $5 million in April 2025 from local pension funds to support its Hillside Gold Project. Premier African Minerals continues to advance the Zulu Lithium and Tantalum Project, bolstering Zimbabwe’s status as a leading lithium producer.

Junior miners are also propelling Africa’s gold sector. In Guinea, Canadian firm Robex Resources is accelerating development of the Kiniero Gold Mine, targeting initial production by the end of 2025 with an expected annual output of 100,000 ounces. Allied Gold secured a $500 million investment from UAE-based Ambrosia to expand the Sadiola Gold Mine in Mali and develop the Kurmuk Gold Mine in Ethiopia. In Sierra Leone, FG Gold Limited is advancing the Baomahun Gold Mine – the country’s first large-scale commercial gold project – slated to become operational in 2025.

To expand on these activities, the forum will host high-level panel discussions addressing the regulatory and market-entry challenges faced by junior miners, offering them a valuable opportunity to engage directly with regulatory authorities and identify effective pathways toward integration into the mining sector.

Recognizing that limited access to investment remains a key barrier for junior mining companies, the event will also serve as a platform to facilitate strategic partnerships between these emerging players, global investors, and established industry leaders – unlocking new avenues to advance Africa’s vast mining potential.

As the continent’s premier gathering for mining stakeholders, African Mining Week enables junior miners to connect with technology providers, ensuring they are equipped with the tools needed to explore and develop Africa’s rich geological resources.

The forum will feature exclusive networking sessions and project showcases, providing a platform for regional and global emerging mining firms to connect with growing and lucrative investments opportunities across the African mining value chain.

  • MIL-Evening Report: View from The Hill: Albanese shifts Tanya Plibersek from environment, in favour of ‘can-do’ Murray Watt

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Michelle Grattan, Professorial Fellow, University of Canberra

The reshuffle announced by Anthony Albanese is a mix of continuity and change, with those in the government’s top rank staying in their previous ministries, as the prime minister had earlier flagged, but some big movements down the line.

Tanya Plibersek, in the past a left factional rival to Albanese, has received what many see as another hospital pass, moving from environment and water to social services.

But her new portfolio does include domestic violence, a policy passion of hers, and is less tricky in terms of her left-leaning electorate than her previous post.

Plibersek’s former portfolio is taken by Murray Watt, a can-do Queenslander who is likely to speed up development approvals.

His appointment will be welcomed by the development-oriented Western Australian Labor government, which played a key role in frustrating Plibersek’s attempt to get a deal with the crossbench on the “nature positive” legislation.

Watt’s previous post of employment and workplace relations – which he held for less than a year – goes to Amanda Rishworth, formerly in social services.

After the sensational factional removal of Mark Dreyfus, the prized attorney-general position goes to Michelle Rowland, who was communications minister. Rowland was a senior telecommunications lawyer with Gilbert + Tobin, but lacks Dreyfus’ distinguished legal background.

Ed Husic, also the victim of the factional power play in the right, is replaced by Tim Ayres, from the left, in both cabinet and the industry portfolio. Ayres, formerly an assistant minister, is a close confidant of Albanese.

On another front, the Muslim Husic is replaced in cabinet by another Muslim, Anne Aly, promoted from the outer ministry, and taking a grab bag of responsibilities: small business, international development and multicultural affairs.

Aly’s promotion may partially soothe the Muslim voices who have reacted sharply to Husic’s treatment. The Jewish community will be less placated: with the demise of Dreyfus there is no Jew in the ministry. Josh Burns, who is Jewish, has been made a special envoy for social housing and homelessness.

The post of special envoy for social cohesion has been scrapped – Albanese said “we will continue to work as a whole government of social cohesion”.

Sam Rae, a numbers man for Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, whom Marles shoehorned into the ministry, becomes minister for aged care and seniors, a testing job for a man who made his reputation in running Labor campaigning.

One of the most potentially significant moves is the shift of the National Disability Insurance Scheme to come under Health Minister Mark Butler.

In the last term Bill Shorten, father of the scheme, who was responsible for the NDIS and government services, undertook significant reform of the NDIS, which had become a sink for money.

Albanese told his news conference the NDIS belonged with health. The question is whether Butler will continue to drive the reform process, which still has a significant way to go. The junior minister for the NDIS will be Jenny McAllister, praised by Albanese for her grasp of detail.

Anika Wells, who was put in cabinet in January, continues up the escalator, moving from aged care to communications.

She will still hold sport. She comes from Queensland, which is preparing for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, and Albanese is anxious for continuity in the role. Responsibility for sport is being moved from the Department of Health to the Department of Infrastructure.

Some sources question the linkage of communications and sport as presenting potential conflicts of interest, given the communications portfolio deals with gambling advertising and broadcast rights.

Tony Burke remains in home affairs but will get responsibility for the Australian Federal Police and ASIO, which came under Dreyfus (originally both were in home affairs under the Liberals).

But the attorney-general will be “cross sworn” into both agencies. Albanese said there had been issues about information-sharing during the so-called caravan incident. This was a reference to the criminal hoax involving a caravan found in Sydney filled with explosives, when there were problems in communications between various state and federal agencies.

Newcomer to the ministry Daniel Mulino, from the Victorian right, who has a PhD in economics from Yale, was an obvious choice for assistant treasurer, in the outer ministry. Andrew Charlton, former economic adviser to Kevin Rudd, has been appointed cabinet secretary and an assistant minister.

Another new minister, Jess Walsh, takes early childhood education and youth, in the outer ministry.

The highly qualified Andrew Leigh continues as an assistant minister. His failure to be promoted is the price for not being in a faction. He will be assistant minister for productivity, competition, charities and treasury – dropping employment but adding productivity.

Given treasurer Chalmers’ current emphasis on productivity, this should give some more scope to Leigh.

One notable new special envoy post is for men’s health, which goes to Dan Repacholi, a champion sporting shooter.

    Nationals re-elect leader David Littleproud

Nationals leader David Littleproud has retained the leadership, holding off a challenge from Senator Matt Canavan, who called for a drastic realignment of policy including ditching the 2050 net zero emissions commitment.

Kevin Hogan was elected deputy. A supporter of Littleproud, he replaces Perin Davey, who lost her Senate seat at the election.

The Nationals do not release vote numbers.

Bridget McKenzie remains Senate leader of the party.

Littleproud said the party would review “all our policies”.

A major issue is whether it will hold to the 2050 commitment, about which there is considerable internal scepticism.

Michelle Grattan does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Roam, a decentralized open wireless network, has rolled out its Business eSIM Data Program, launching with a key partnership with Bybit, a top-tier cryptocurrency exchange. This program, introduced after Roam’s successful debut on 12 major exchanges—including Bybit, Bitget, Gate.io, MEXC, and KuCoin—in March 2025, serves as a thank-you to the incredible support Roam received during its Token Generation Event (TGE). A Breakthrough for Global Businesses

The Business eSIM Data Program fuels Roam’s mission to build a decentralized global open wireless network. Crafted for businesses, it’s a game-changer for international travelers, remote workers, and global teams, especially in fast-moving sectors like Web3. Spanning over 180 countries, Roam’s enterprise-grade eSIM connects users to local networks instantly, providing reliable data without the hefty price tag of traditional roaming.

Once the free data runs out, users can add more through the Roam App. Activation requires an eSIM-compatible device and basic details, like email and IMEI, submitted online.

A Bold Step Toward a Connected World

The Bybit partnership kicks off Roam’s global push for the Business eSIM Data Program. • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Weather News – Mostly settled weather, with a few showers in the mix – MetService

    Source: MetService

Covering period of Monday 12th – Thursday 15th May – This week is shaping up to be a much more settled week compared to the severe weather of last week. However, that will come with some days of rain for others, mostly in the South Island. With only a few weeks of autumn left, temperatures remain steady.

For much of New Zealand, it is going to be a fine weather week. This is especially true for the North Island, where settled conditions will be the prevailing theme. The odd shower may pop up in western areas at times, and there’s a brief chance of showers in the east late Tuesday into Wednesday. However, for the South Island, it’s a mixed bag of weather. While today (Monday) remains fine apart from odd showers, a front is expected to move up the South Island on Tuesday morning, bringing rain for the lower and western parts of the island.

The rain in the South Island is forecast to clear by Tuesday night, as the front weakens significantly.

MetService Meteorologist Surprise Mhlongo states, “Midweek sees a clearance of the rain but also a slight and short-lived drop in maximum temperatures for the Island, as the wind turns southwesterly. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop below 3 degrees for some places in Otago, leading to the possibility of frosty nights,”

Another front is forecast to arrive in the South Island on Thursday morning, with yet another rainy day for the lower and western parts of the island.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Boots on the Ground make a $164M Footprint

    Source: Predator Free 2050

Predator Free 2050 Limited (PF2050 Limited or the Company) is celebrating remarkable contributions by the collective of predator free landscape projects nationwide. A target of $164M of non-government contribution to work on urban and rural land has been more than met in what is proving to be an unprecedented community effort. “The belief and commitment from communities is truly inspiring,” says PF2050 Limited Chair Denise Church. “Having so many people and organisations investing in the movement not only financially but also through in-kind support demonstrates the power of collective action toward achieving the Predator Free 2050 goal.”
The goal of eradicating rats, mustelids, and possums across two-thirds of Aotearoa New Zealand, the urban and rural areas where people live, work, and play, has morphed from an ambitious “moonshot” into a feasible proposition. Beyond financial backing, volunteer efforts have become an invaluable asset, uniting a generation in a shared purpose and delivering what would normally come with substantial costs.
The tireless efforts of projects with boots on the ground, and supported by PF2050 Limited, have proved that predators can be eliminated in urban and rural areas. Thanks to those efforts, as of 31 March 2025, communities have already contributed more than $164M in non-government support for 18 major projects since their inception. This meets a key target for community contribution and is a testament to the unwavering dedication of hundreds of Kiwis working on urban and rural land to protect Aotearoa New Zealand’s biodiversity before it’s too late. Support has come in the forms of cash, in-kind donations, and the value of volunteer labour, and it more than matches the PF2050 Limited contribution of $92M to this work.
Year after year, Predator Free 2050 projects have proven that, with a combined collective effort from communities, philanthropists, councils, and volunteers, people are willing to put more on the line to bring nature back to our communities and the places we live, work and play. From visible nature gains to economic and public health gains and strengthened communities, the payback is significant.
It is a great achievement so far, but to reach the PF2050 goal, more is needed. While PF2050 Limited and the projects it supports remain committed to sustaining momentum, they face the end of funding from Jobs for Nature and the Provincial Growth Fund. The collective of predator free projects and PF2050 Limited will be working to raise new funds to advance this essential work in our cities, towns, farms and forests and to develop even more efficient and scalable predator free approaches. So much has been achieved by the community already that it is unthinkable to let the momentum falter.
PF2050 Limited, a Crown-owned charitable company established in 2016, plays a pivotal role in this transformative movement. The Company focuses on supporting large-scale predator elimination projects and breakthrough scientific innovations, supporting professionally delivered, community-led initiatives, in its mission to address a critical biodiversity crisis. The Predator Free 2050 goal, a bold national commitment to eradicate possums, rats, and mustelids by 2050, has achieved remarkable funding success.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: No congestion charging for goods vehicles, says Transporting New Zealand

Source: Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand

Transporting New Zealand told today’s [note: Monday] Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee at Parliament that goods vehicles should be exempt from time-of-use charging.
Transporting New Zealand Chief Executive Dom Kalasih and Head of Policy & Advocacy Billy Clemens listed four key improvements that would maximise time of use savings for businesses and consumers as part of their submission on the Land Transport Management (Time of Use Charging) Amendment Bill.
    The recommendations were:
    1. That the legislation exempts freight vehicles and public transport vehicles from paying time-of-use charges.
    2. That the legislation does not allow differentiated time-of-use charges according to vehicle class.
    3. That the legislation specifies assessments of the impact of time-of-use charging include the expected impacts on the supply chain and freight movement.
    4. That the legislation enables scheme boards, with the approval of impacted local authorities and the Minister, to implement short-term trials ahead of a scheme being put in place.
Clemens told the Committee that many in the road freight industry are understandably wary of freight efficiency tools focusing on revenue raising rather than boosting the productivity of the supply chain.
“We’ve seen examples of de-facto congestion charging at Port of Auckland where they introduced peak-based vehicle booking systems that were initially introduced at relatively modest rates… [and then the] Port of Auckland realised it was an excellent revenue raising tool.
“So our members are looking at that and thinking: ‘These are always sold to us on productivity grounds… but once things get settled in it’s pretty tempting to turn the system into a revenue lever.’
“I think you’ve probably heard from some local authorities and councils suggesting [time of use charging] would be a helpful revenue tool.”
Transporting New Zealand also called for the legislation to reference freight impacts and good supply chain outcomes to provide further reassurance to freight businesses and their customers.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Health and Employment – Struggling hospice nurses shattered by pay equity changes – NZNO

    Source: New Zealand Nurses Organisation

This year’s Hospice Awareness Week comes as hospices struggle to keep their doors open because of a lack of Government funding and nurses’ chances of fair pay shattered by the removal of their pay equity claim, NZNO says.
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation Tōpūtanga Tapuhi Kaitiaki o Aotearoa (NZNO) hospice pay equity claim was filed in late-2023 covering 27 hospices employing its members. That claim, alongside nine others for NZNO, were thrown out by the Government last week with its to pay equity law changes.
Hospice New Zealand today said Te Whatu Ora had refused to adjust their funding so hospice nurses and health care assistants could be paid the same as their hospital counterparts. Hospices could not afford to fund the widening pay gap as at least 35% of hospice nurses’ wages came from fundraising and donations because of chronic underfunding of the sector.
NZNO delegate and hospice nurse Donna Burnett says hospice nurses are demoralised and angered by last week’s announcement.
“Hospices are already facing service cutbacks, with a strong possibility of closures in small region because of the current lack of funding. It is not sustainable. On top of this, at the swipe of a pen and a blink of an eye, Government pulled pay equity out from under us.”
Due to New Zealand’s aging population, the crisis for hospices will only worsen if the Government doesn’t step up and properly fund the sector, she says.
“We are meant to be raising awareness about hospices this week, but the reality is people need to be aware of what’s happening to us nurses and health care assistants because it impacts our patients.
“Without pay equity and a fully funded sector, hospices will keep losing nurses and health care assistants to better paying hospitals or overseas health systems.
“Dying New Zealanders and their whānau have enough to worry about without not being able to access hospice care because of short staffing which is a direct result of Government decisions,” Donna Burnett says.

CANBERRA, May 12 (Xinhua) — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his cabinet for his second term on Monday and will be sworn in at a ceremony attended by Governor-General Samantha Mostyn on Tuesday.

“I intend to recommend to the Governor General the next composition of the government, which will be sworn in tomorrow at 9:00. Immediately after that, the full government will meet here in the parliament building,” said E. Albanese.

He noted that the Labour Party now has the largest faction in the history of the federation.

As of Monday, the Labor Party was on track to win an absolute majority of 93 of the 150 seats in the lower house of parliament, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). At that time, 83.9 percent of the votes had been counted, with five seats still “in question.”

Labor had never won more than 90 seats in the lower house before, and no party in Australian history had won more than 94 seats.

After winning the election, E. Albanese called on his party’s elected members to focus on working for the benefit of all Australians. –0–

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Protect the Tribunal, Protect the Treaty: Oppose the Government’s Review of the Waitangi Tribunal – PSA

    Source: PSA

The Government’s proposed review of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 is a clear attempt to undermine the Tribunal’s independence and diminish Māori rangatiratanga, the PSA says.
Janice Panoho, Kaihautū Māori of the Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi, rejects Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka’s claim that the review is intended to “refocus” the Tribunal to its original intent.
“Māori and Treaty partners across the motu see this move for what it is: a political attempt to weaken one of the few institutions that holds the Crown accountable to its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi,” Panoho says.
“For nearly 50 years, the Waitangi Tribunal has played a vital role in advancing justice for Māori. It has provided a platform for Māori voices, upheld the mana of Te Tiriti, and made recommendations that have shaped the very foundations of the Māori-Crown relationship,” Panoho says.
“This review is not about efficiency or clarity, it is about control. It is a clear attempt to undermine the Tribunal’s independence and diminish Māori rangatiratanga.
“The proposal to limit the Tribunal’s scope and reframe its inquiries according to a political agenda, as outlined in the coalition agreement between National and New Zealand First, is deeply concerning. Rather than strengthening the Tribunal, the review threatens to erase decades of progress toward honouring Te Tiriti and addressing the injustices faced by generations of whānau, hapū, and iwi.
“The so called Independent Technical Advisory Group (ITAG), despite including a handful of Māori members, lacks transparency and accountability. It is not representative of the whānau, hapū, and iwi who have engaged with the Tribunal for decades. The rushed timeline for engagement and legislation adds to the concerns.
“This review occurs at a time when Māori communities are already experiencing the impacts of cost-cutting measures across Te Arawhiti, Te Aka Whai Ora, and other kaupapa Māori initiatives. The cumulative effect is a sustained attack on Māori rights, institutions, and leadership.
The PSA and Te Rūnanga o Ngā Toa Āwhina, which represents the PSA’s 11,000 members who identify as Māori, strongly oppose the move and call on the Government to:
    • Halt the review of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975
    immediately.
    • Uphold the integrity and independence of the
    Waitangi Tribunal.
    • Honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi in both word and
    action.
    • Engage meaningfully with Māori, not after
    decisions are made, but before.
“The future of the Waitangi Tribunal is not just a Māori issue, it is a matter of national integrity, justice, and honouring our founding covenant,” Panoho says.
The Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi is Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest trade union, representing and supporting more than 95,000 workers across central government, state-owned enterprises, local councils, health boards and community groups.
