  • MIL-OSI USA: NEWS: Sanders: ‘No, Mr. President. Climate Change is Not a Hoax’

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Vermont – Bernie Sanders

BURLINGTON, Vt., July 13 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today released the following statement:

In the midst of everything else going on, it’s easy to ignore the extraordinary planetary crisis we face from climate change. But we just can’t allow ourselves to do that.

The past 10 years have been the warmest 10 years on record. 2024 was the warmest year in recorded history. January 2025 was the hottest January on record. Western Europe just had its hottest June on record. The recent heat wave in the United States put nearly 190 million Americans under heat advisories and broke heat records in more than 280 locations. Over the past 60 years, the frequency of heat waves in the United States has tripled. According to a new study from Yale University, 64% of Americans think global warming is affecting the weather in the U.S. and almost HALF say they have personally experienced its effects.

From May 2024 to May 2025, 4 billion people — half of the world’s population — experienced at least one extra month of extreme heat due to climate change. Climate change exacerbated Hurricane Helene last fall in the American Southeast, flooding in Texas this past week and in Vermont and Brazil last summer, recent wildfires in Canada and Los Angeles, and health waves in the United States, Europe, India and Pakistan.

And what is President Trump’s response? He just fired the last remaining State Department employees who work on climate change, which is undoubtedly one of the greatest threats to our national security.

Donald Trump is putting the planet and future generations at risk for the short-term profits of his fossil fuel executive friends.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: ASIA/PHILIPPINES – Online gambling is a “public health crisis that destroys society”: Bishops call for it to be declared illegal

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

    Freepik

Manila (Agenzia Fides) – In the gambling addiction treatment centers run by Caritas, Catholic organizations, and communities in the Philippines, the number of cases of online gambling addiction is increasing, a trend fueled by the boom in betting apps on cell phones and mobile devices. The Philippine Church has described this as “a deepening crisis in the country” and is sounding the alarm about a social and cultural scourge that is destroying the lives of young people and entire families. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor), the public concessionaire that operates gambling in the Philippines, announced that it recorded a net profit of 84.97 billion pesos in 2024. About half of this amount came from the “remarkable performance” of electronic games and electronic bingo.A 2023 Capstone-Intel survey found that online gambling participation in the country is high among both young and middle-aged people. According to the survey, 66 percent of young Filipinos between the ages of 18 and 24 gamble online, and 57 percent of respondents between the ages of 41 and 55 reported regular online gambling, averaging two to three times per week. Seven out of 10 respondents reported spending about 1,000 pesos per week (equivalent to twice a worker’s daily salary) on online betting, while about 20 percent bet up to 3,000 pesos.Meanwhile, in light of “alarming data,” two members of the European Parliament have submitted a motion calling for an investigation into online gambling, particularly with regard to illegal operators. The lawmakers introduced the resolution to Parliament on July 9, calling for an investigation into the social consequences of the phenomenon, ranging from financial losses and mental health problems to contact with criminal networks often run by illegal offshore gambling operators that facilitate crimes such as money laundering.Online gambling is widespread among both wealthy and low-income households, and even among the unemployed. “Low-income groups are particularly hard hit, and there is a risk of entrenching poverty. Meanwhile, online gambling has serious social impacts, including deteriorating mental health, family conflicts, and suicide attempts,” the lawmakers said. “Users often resort to loans and digital wallets to finance gambling, which contributes to the exacerbation of cycles of debt and increasing family conflict,” the resolution states. The bishops of the Philippines also recently addressed this issue in a message at the conclusion of their plenary assembly. They lament the phenomenon and point with concern to “the moral and social crisis caused by online gambling.” They call it “a new plague or virus that destroys individuals, families, and society” and causes an addiction that spreads “silently, like widespread slavery.” “We don’t realize it, but it’s rampant: many, including young people, are becoming addicted to online gambling,” the bishops said in their message.”It is clear,” the bishops continued, “that online gambling is no longer a simple pastime. It is a profound and widespread moral problem hidden under the guise of entertainment and technology.” It “is by no means innocent, but deliberately attractive, especially to young people and ordinary citizens. Online access is easy, winning is quick, and losing is just as quick.” What users don’t know, however, is that “this system was designed to draw people into the web of gambling addiction.”Gambling is nothing new in the Philippines, and there have always been legal and illegal forms of betting. However, thanks to digital technology, the phenomenon has changed its profile: thanks to smartphones, gambling has become accessible to everyone 24/7. One click on any online account or electronic wallet is enough to lose all the money deposited in an instant.”In gambling,” the bishops say, “conscience seems to be gradually being lost. We are conditioned to think that it is just normal entertainment or fun, or that there is nothing wrong with it.” Yet the Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear on this issue: ‘… Gambling becomes morally unacceptable when it deprives someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2413).The bishops also lament the silence of the media, the government, and the business community: “Could it be because many of them profit from it?” they ask. Entrepreneurs in the world of communications have set up online gaming platforms that exceeded 154 billion pesos in revenue in 2024 alone, an increase of almost 165% over the previous year. The Church is concerned about those who have fallen into the gambling net and “live in shame, fear, and despair.” Many turn to church institutions for help, saying: “My salary always runs out…” “I lied to my family again…” “Our family is ruined because of gambling…” “I don’t know how to stop…”The bishops note: “It is no longer a problem for individuals. It is a public health crisis in our society, just like drugs, alcohol, and other types of addiction.” It destroys not only the individual but also their family.”In light of this phenomenon, “we cannot afford to remain silent, because the spread of gambling and addiction among many people is like a deadly plague or pandemic that destroys the lives of individuals, families, and society as a whole.”The bishops ask: “What will the future of the country look like if young people are easily attracted to online gambling because there are virtually no restrictions? What will happen if we say that young people need a good education and that citizens have jobs, but gambling is rampant?”The Church’s position is clear: “Taking advantage of the weakness of others just to make money is a sin. The spread of gambling, especially among young and poor people, is a major scandal. As a society—government, businesses, schools, and churches—we must not be blind, deaf, and mute to the harm it causes.”Therefore, the Bishops’ Conference calls on institutions to “declare any form of online gambling illegal and recognize that gambling addiction is a public health problem that should be addressed with appropriate education, legislation, and treatment.” Alternatively, the government is urged to introduce appropriate controls on online payment systems “so that they do not become easy access to online gambling sites, in order to protect our young people.”Parishes and all Catholic communities are urged “to help individuals and families affected by gambling and not to remain silent or passive.””We invite every conscientious person to consider the good of the nation, society, young people, and their souls. The Church is not against any form of entertainment or leisure activity. But when pleasure becomes slavery and entertainment becomes a cause of the destruction of life, we must cry out and warn,” the bishops said.”We want to remind everyone,” the bishops’ message concludes, “that we can escape slavery through honorable work, by continuing to walk the path of truth, goodness, justice, and, above all, the grace of God. Jesus did not come to judge, but to save.” (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 12/7/2025)

  • MIL-OSI: A Large Influx of XRP Holders Joins BJMINING, On-Chain Earnings Surge by 300%

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Washington, D.C, July 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the XRP market experiences extreme turbulence, a growing number of investors are turning to alternative avenues for stable asset growth. Since early July, BJMINING has seen a 215% increase in new user registrations from XRP holders, with over 60% citing technical analysis warnings as the reason for shifting part of their portfolios into cloud mining.

This trend comes in the wake of XRP forming a descending triangle pattern after briefly topping $2.30. Historical data suggests such structures have a 54%-70% chance of breaking downward. Analysts caution that if the key support between $1.80 and $2.00 fails, XRP could tumble toward the $1 mark.

Cloud Mining: A New Hedge for XRP Holders

When XRP formed a descending triangle pattern earlier this month, traditional holding strategies suddenly appeared far riskier. According to CoinTelegraph, this technical pattern has triggered crashes in over half of historical cases—including a 50% drawdown in 2021.

At the same time, XRP’s Stochastic RSI surged above 80 into the overbought zone. This same indicator foreshadowed average price drops of 25% in 2025, with extreme cases reaching as much as 45%.

With market panic escalating, XRP holders face a dilemma: sell now and risk missing a rebound, or hold and absorb potentially severe corrections.

That’s where cloud mining offers a third option. By converting XRP assets into income-generating mining power, investors can retain ownership of their tokens while building a revenue buffer against volatility.

    Why BJMINING Stands Out
    Instant Entry, Zero Cost Start
BJMINING offers the industry’s highest new-user reward of $15 upon registration—enough to launch a 1-day mining contract with no upfront cost. Comparable platforms typically offer only $10–$12. Users can earn $1.50 in daily profit using this bonus alone, enabling truly zero-barrier participation.

    Smart Asset Conversion Engine

Since XRP cannot be mined directly, BJMINING developed a proprietary multi-chain conversion system. When users deposit XRP:

The platform automatically converts it into high-yield mineable assets like BTC or ETH

An AI engine tracks price spreads across six major exchanges, ensuring conversion losses stay below 0.3%

Daily mining profits can be settled in the user’s preferred currency—including XRP—to avoid secondary conversion fees

    Global Infrastructure Power

Operating across 180 countries with 60 proprietary mining facilities, BJMINING leverages its scale to lower operating costs:

North America hydro-mining farms: Locked-in energy contracts at $0.03/kWh through 2028

Norwegian liquid-cooled centers: PUE ratios as low as 1.05

Hong Kong-grade financial security: 98% of assets stored offline using HSM hardware modules

Verified Returns: How XRP Holders Grow Wealth with BJMINING
BJMINING offers a variety of flexible contracts tailored to XRP holders of all investment levels. Below are some of the most popular mining plans:

Contract Project Investment Amount The term Total revenue
    WhatsMiner M50S+ $100 2days $100+$6
    WhatsMiner M60S++ $600 7days $600+$52.50
    Avalon Miner A1566 $1,200 15days $1,200+$234
    WhatsMiner M66S+ $5,800 30days $5,800+$2,610
    Antminer L7 $12,000 40days $12,000+$8,160
    ANTSPACE HD5 $96,000 54days $96,000+$119,232

If a user invests $96,000 in the ANTSPACE HD5 hashrate contract (54-day term), the estimated total return can reach $215,232—including a net profit of $119,232. This option is ideal for long-term holders looking to optimize their asset allocation.

    Why Shift Now?

The XRP ecosystem is undergoing a profound transformation. On-chain data shows that weekly transaction volume on the XRP Ledger has surged by 430% over the past two years, reaching over 8 million transactions per week in 2025. Meanwhile, Ripple has formed a custodial partnership with BNY Mellon—America’s oldest bank—further driving institutional adoption.

A Canadian user who transferred 170,000 XRP to BJMINING remarked, “Rather than endure the stress of a technical pullback, I’d rather let my assets work for me around the clock in a mining facility.”

BJMINING’s AI-powered dynamic tuning system is designed to seize arbitrage opportunities amid market turbulence. On July 11, when XRP suddenly dropped 8%, the system automatically reallocated computing power to BTC mining—resulting in a 12% gain in daily returns despite the broader downturn.

As XRP approaches a potential breakout point in September, cloud mining enables investors to accumulate more tokens while waiting for market recovery—unlocking dual benefits in a bullish run:

Value appreciation of held XRP assets

Increase in token quantity via mining rewards

The true value of digital assets lies not only in price appreciation, but in their ability to consistently generate cash flow. With over 5 million global users, BJMINING proves that idle XRP can become a source of stable daily income—delivering 0.5% to 1.2% returns through its AI-optimized mining infrastructure.

The Working Group on Patriotic Education (WGPE) under the Constitution and Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee organised a two-day exchange tour to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) on July 12 and 13. Led by the Convenor of the WGPE, Dr Starry Lee, together with members of the Media Publicity Sub-group, Mr Lee Luen-fai and Dr James Li; the Director of Information Services, Mrs Apollonia Liu; and 20 representatives from different media organisations, the delegation visited various enterprises and places in Shenzhen and Dongguan to learn more about the latest developments of the GBA in areas such as innovation and technology and industrialisation, as well as culture and history.

The delegation visited the headquarters of DeepRoute.ai in Shenzhen yesterday (July 12) to experience the application of autonomous vehicle technologies. After that, it visited the China State Construction Hailong Technology Company Limited Science and Technology Research Institute to learn about the operation of the Modular Integrated Construction manufacturing bases, which has been applied to the Light Public Housing development at Kai Tak, Hong Kong. The delegation later paid a visit to BYD Company Limited’s headquarters in Shenzhen.

Today (July 13), the delegation visited Huawei’s research institute in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, followed by a visit to the Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project Memorial Park and its exhibition hall to gain insights into the project’s history and its importance for fresh water supply in Hong Kong. In the afternoon, the delegation explored the Nantou Ancient City Museum and was briefed on the important position of Nantou Ancient City in the Lingnan coastal region, reflecting on the close ties and deep friendship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen as well as the same roots they share. The delegation then visited SmartMore Corporation Limited, which was founded by a Hong Kong entrepreneur, and learned about the company’s developments in artificial intelligence.

Dr Lee said, “Since its establishment, the WGPE has been dedicated to preserving and promoting patriotism on different fronts. The delegation gained significant rewards through the exchange. By visiting different renowned enterprises and sites in Shenzhen and Dongguan, we observed the rapid development of our country in various areas, fostered a strong sense of national pride, and recognised the close ties between the GBA and Hong Kong, enabling the media to continue to deliver in-depth and accurate information to Hong Kong citizens. In the future, I hope that the WGPE and the media will maintain close collaboration to keep abreast of the latest developments of our country and tell good stories of Mainland China and Hong Kong.”

PYONGYANG, July 13 (Xinhua) — The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Russia on Saturday reaffirmed their willingness to develop bilateral ties and pledged to provide firm support to each other.

North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Son Hui and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov made the commitment during the second round of strategic dialogue in the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday, citing a press statement released a day earlier.

During the strategic dialogue, the foreign ministers of the two countries “held an in-depth discussion on pressing practical issues arising in accelerating the dynamic development of relations between the DPRK and Russia,” the statement said.

The parties reiterated their intention to deepen strategic communication and cooperation to protect state sovereignty, territorial integrity and international justice, and to increase interaction in the international arena.

  • MIL-OSI Analysis: Canada’s proposed east-west energy corridors should prioritize clean energy

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Andy Hira, Professor of Political Science, Simon Fraser University

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made establishing east-west energy corridors a priority for Canada. He suggested that such corridors would include new oil and natural gas pipelines, designed to reduce dependence on the United States.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson has gone even further in pushing for subsidization of carbon capture and storage projects that would effectively underwrite the long-term continuation of the fossil fuel industry at taxpayer expense.

While there might be short-term political reasons for backing fossil fuels, such an approach goes against Canada’s long-term interests. Prioritizing fossil fuels undermines the country’s commitments to reduce emissions and takes away the investment needed for it to realize its potential to become a green energy superpower.

Creating energy corridors is in the national interest, and would allow Canada to take full advantage of its abundant and diverse energy and mineral resources. The government also needs to be involved, as the corridors are interprovincial and will require substantial investment. However, the government has limited resources and so Canada must think strategically about its priorities for such corridors.

Canadian taxpayers should not be subsidizing an already lucrative oil and gas industry. Instead, the federal government should prioritize funding clean energy supply solutions.

    Oil and gas subsidies

Canadian governments have long faced opposition to building new pipelines. The provinces of Québec and British Columbia and many First Nations have strongly opposed new pipeline proposals. More recently, there is some signs of softening under the duress of U.S. tariffs.

Even if such shifts are lasting, it’s for the private sector to step up and invest into these projects. Previous federal investments, such as the Trans Mountain pipeline (TMX), were reflections of the private market’s unwillingness to invest in pipelines because they are bad investments. The 2024 Parliamentary Budget Office report estimated that selling the TMX would result in a loss.

There are reasons to question the soundness of fossil fuels on a purely financial basis. A 2022 Parliamentary budget office report found that climate change reduced GDP by 0.8 per cent in 2021, or around $20 billion. This number is expected to rise to 5.8 per cent per year by 2100 (or $145 billion in 2021 dollars).

By contrast, from 2017 to 2021, federal, provincial and territorial governments received an average of $12 billion annually in revenues from the the oil and gas industry.

The gap between the costs and benefits is only going to increase over time. The costs cut across all aspects of life, including food security, health care, global instability and threats to coastal cities due to sea level rise.

On the other hand, every dollar invested in adaptation today has an estimated return of $13-$15.

Furthermore, a recent study indicates a likely glut in global natural gas markets, and the future prospects for oil are equally questionable. For example, one of Canada’s target markets, Japan, has been reselling its liquefied natural gas imports to other countries, suggesting the glut of oil and gas is likely to continue as cheaper producers, including those in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, who are cheaper and closer to consumers, flood the market.

Cheaper and closer oil producers are also flooding markets in anticipation of declining prices.

There are important opportunity costs of investing money in fossil fuels that could otherwise be invested in the clean energy economy. When new technologies arise, there is a limited window of opportunity for global competitors to enter into an emerging industry.

In light of the shift to electric vehicles, heat pumps and artificial intelligence, it’s clear that energy demand is bound to increase significantly in Canada in the coming years. Canada can become a global competitor, but only if it enters the race now, while the window is open.

    An East-West clean energy system

Solar and wind prices have declined by 83 per cent and 65 per cent respectively since 2009. However, they suffer from the fundamental issue of intermittency; the sun is not always shining and the wind isn’t always blowing.

While battery prices are declining, they remain an expensive solution. An easier solution is at hand: Canada’s hydroelectric resources. Québec, B.C. and Manitoba have abundant hydro resources that can reduce energy costs throughout the rest of the country.

Alberta and Saskatchewan have potential for significant geothermal power generation. Ontario and the Atlantic provinces could contribute wind and solar. Trading electricity through an integrated national grid increases the investment capital and reduces the need for batteries while diversifying the energy mix.

But we need an east-west electricity market to make this happen.

An east-west grid would reduce the need for every province to run its own power generation system. Creating a pooled market would allow provinces to trade electricity, giving consumers more choice and investors a larger market and potential return on their investment.

More valuable still is the fact that electricity capacity has to be built for the few peak hours and seasons. But most of the time demand is well below full capacity, such as the middle of the night or early summer, when neither heat nor air conditioning is needed in many areas. As peak times and seasons vary across the country, Canada can reduce overall costs by trading the electricity in the lowest cost producing province at a given time to where it’s needed in the other.

By locating some of the new clean energy in First Nations, Canada can also move reconciliation forward. There is potential for a win-win situation whereby Canada increases renewable energy generation while creating new jobs and income for First Nations wherever feasible.

The first step is for regulatory reform across the provinces to support a Canada-wide electricity market, and to provide the funding for the massive infrastructure investment required to connect provincial grids. This would be a federal investment with incredible long-term payoffs for employment, taxpayers and future generations.

Following this plan could truly make Canada an energy superpower on the right side of the energy transition, create thousands of jobs and give the country a global competitive edge — all while helping to save the planet in the process.

In a move to protect farmers and ensure the integrity of agricultural inputs, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has written to the Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories, calling for immediate and strict action against the sale of fake and substandard fertilizers.

The directive aims to curb the black marketing of subsidized fertilizers, the circulation of counterfeit products, and illegal practices such as forced tagging of nano or bio-stimulant fertilizers.

Emphasizing that agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, the Minister stressed the importance of providing farmers with quality fertilizers on time, at affordable prices. He reminded states that the sale of substandard or fake fertilizers is prohibited under the Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985, which is part of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

The Centre has directed states to monitor fertilizer distribution closely, take action against overpricing and diversion, and strengthen sampling and testing to detect counterfeit products. It also instructed authorities to immediately halt forced tagging practices and to take strict legal action, including license cancellations and FIRs, against violators.

States have been encouraged to involve farmers and farmer groups in monitoring efforts and to launch awareness campaigns to help them distinguish between genuine and fake fertilizers.

Calling for a statewide crackdown, Chouhan said regular monitoring and strict enforcement would ensure lasting solutions and protect farmers’ interests.

  • Hungary’s opposition flags ‘New Deal’ to kickstart stagnating economy

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Hungary’s opposition leader Peter Magyar said on Saturday his Tisza party will launch a “Hungarian New Deal” to revive the stagnating economy with massive investment and predictable policy if it wins elections next year.

Magyar, whose centre-right party has a firm lead over the ruling Fidesz in most opinion polls, poses the biggest political challenge to nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who after 15 years in power finds himself struggling to boost the inflation-hit economy.

The risk of steep U.S. tariffs on EU imports also looms large over recovery prospects and Saturday’s announcement of 30% tariffs on the EU by President Donald Trump is bad news for the Central European country.

Magyar announced his Hungarian New Deal plan to supporters at his party’s congress in the western city of Nagykanizsa.

“We need economic growth, investments, predictable financial and economic policy in Hungary,” Magyar said, adding that Tisza would crack down on corruption and buy back state assets that he said had been stolen over the past 15 years.

The main pillars of Tisza’s plan will be a major healthcare reform with additional funding of 500 billion forints ($1.5 billion) annually, a large-scale rental flat and home construction programme, a modernisation of state railways using EU and national funds, and investments in energy efficiency for households and in education.

Magyar, a former government insider who burst into Hungarian politics last year, again pledged to unlock some 20 billion euros of suspended EU funds that Hungary has not received for years due to clashes between Brussels and Orban over a perceived erosion of democracy and corruption — accusations that Orban denies.

The parliamentary election is set to take place early next year, though no date has been set. In June parliament passed Orban’s 2026 election year budget, including steep tax cuts for families, a key demographic group for Fidesz.

“People are fed up with this regime. And Tisza is a kind of ‘collecting party’ which stood behind all this (discontent). People want change,” said Edit Piroska Borsi, a retired teacher at the congress.

  • West Indies bowl out Australia for 225 after dramatic collapse

    Source: Government of India (4)

Australia lost seven wickets for 68 runs in a dramatic collapse to be all out for 225 on day one of the third and final test against West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

West Indies finished the day on 16 for one — 209 runs behind — after Australia’s Mitchell Starc bowled Kevlon Anderson off the inside edge in the pacer’s 100th test.

Starc, 35, is just the second Australian fast bowler after Glenn McGrath to play 100 tests.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first for the day-night test but crumbled despite being 157-3 at one stage as the West Indies bowlers ripped through their middle order before being dismissed in 70.3 overs.

Australia’s Usman Khawaja and Sam Konstas shared a 28-run opening partnership before Justin Greaves provided the breakthrough for West Indies by removing Konstas. Steve Smith top-scored for Australia with 48, and shared a 61-run stand with Cameron Green, the visitors’ highest partnership of the day.

West Indies quick Shamar Joseph finished with 4-33, the pick of the home bowlers, while Jayden Seales and Justin Greaves took three wickets each.

For West Indies, opener Brandon King was batting on eight with skipper Roston Chase on three at the other end after losing Anderson for three runs.

West Indies fielded a makeshift opening pair of Anderson and King after Mikyle Louis and John Campbell sustained injuries while fielding and were sent to hospital for scans.

“Every pitch has been tough. The more balls you spend in the middle you hope it gets better but it just hasn’t been the case,” Green told broadcasters.

“It’s a bit of a grind first time with these balls, but a lot of learnings. Time in the middle is key – just trying to get used to their bowlers, their conditions.

“Very happy with our position (in this test). We wanted to give them a tricky last 45 minutes. To get them one down is crucial, and we’ll wait and see what happens tomorrow.”

Australia won the first test by 159 runs and second by 133 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

  • Women’s Euro 2025: Sweden storm to group victory with 4-1 win over Germany

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Sweden made the most of Germany defender Carlotta Wamser’s expulsion to sweep to a 4-1 win and secure top spot in their Group C clash on Saturday, with their opponents also going through to the quarter-finals as runners-up.

The Swedes finished top of the group with a perfect nine points from three games and will take on the runners-up in Group D, which features France, England, Netherlands and Wales.

The Germans will face the winners of Group D.

Friday’s encounter was the first time the Germans conceded four goals at a Women’s Euros and the Swedes were good value for their win, punishing virtually every mistake the Germans made.

Germany got off to a flying start, slicing Sweden open through the middle as Wamser slid the ball into the path of Jule Brand, who managed to slip it past Jennifer Falk despite the Swedish keeper getting a touch.

The Swedes struck back within five minutes, striker Stina Blackstenius expertly timing her run behind the defence and latching on to Kosovare Asllani’s ball before flashing a shot past Ann-Katrin Berger to level.

Though the Germans looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line, it was the Swedes who took the lead through Smilla Holmberg in the 25th minute, the fullback marauding into the box before losing control and then steering an attempted clearance into the net from a tight angle.

    RED CARD

Germany’s challenge fell apart in the 32nd minute when Wamser was shown a straight red card for a deliberate handball to block a goal, and Fridolina Rolfo scored from the spot to make it 3-1 in her 100th international.

“The red card was decisive,” Germany coach Christian Wueck said. “We couldn’t fight back into the game with one less player on the pitch.”

Though the Germans made the odd dangerous foray in the second half, the Swedes exploited their numerical advantage and substitute Lina Hurtig put the game beyond reach with a close-range finish in the 80th minute.

“It’s very important to build on a good feeling and gain confidence, now we can look forward,” goalscorer Blackstenius said.

The Germans were disappointed with how the game turned out after such a good start.

“We started the game very well. We were fully in it and the better team,” Klara Buhl said.

“We then give the game away in 10 minutes, that’s incredibly bitter. We have to put that behind us as quickly as possible.”

The Swedes play their quarter-final in Zurich next Thursday, while the Germans will have two extra days of rest before playing their game in Basel on Saturday.

  • MIL-OSI Submissions: Indonesia plans to rewrite its national history: A return to an incomplete narrative?

Source: The Conversation – Indonesia – By Adrian Perkasa, Peneliti Pascadoktoral, Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies

Indonesia’s plan to rewrite its official national history was initially met with positive responses, particularly for its goal of better serving the younger generation. But the project to reshape the country’s mainstream historical narrative soon ignited widespread controversy for overlooking underrepresented groups and reinforcing authoritarian tendencies.

By incorporating the latest data and expanding the coverage of historical events and figures, the initiative — launched by the Indonesian Historian Association (MSI) and backed by the Culture Ministry on May 2025 — raised hopes for a more inclusive, accurate, and relevant national history.

However, backlash soon followed, with criticism intensifying after Culture Minister Fadli Zon’s controversial statement) dismissing the 1998 mass rapes as mere rumours.

Various groups argue that the rewriting of national history is a calculated move to bolster an increasingly authoritarian government, as it relies solely on scholars and historians with ties to those in power.

    Many groups remain underrepresented

A nation’s relationship with its history is deeply tied to how contemporary narratives are constructed or shaped. For national historiography to carry legitimacy, it must meaningfully include the voices of diverse groups, classes, communities, and entities.

However, the project’s terms of reference fail to give due attention to space for women’s roles in the Indonesian independence movement].

Its treatment of historical narratives from regions beyond Java also remains insufficient — let alone its neglect of non-political and non-economic themes, such as the arts or sports.

    Silent affirmation?

In response to the controversy, few formal statements have been made from either MSI or the historians involved in the project, apart from the minister and the project’s principal editor.

One notable exception came from a historian via his social media page, where he reflected on the dilemma of being both an intellectual and a public servant involved in the project.

He argued that speaking from within, rather than criticising from the outside, demands greater courage and careful calculation – a stance he fears is likely to be overlooked.

As a history-and-culture researcher, his remarks reinforce the perception that many of the historians involved in the revision project are civil servants at state universities or individuals closely aligned with those in power.

    Lessons from the past

History itself tells us that the writing of national history is deeply intertwined with the interests of ruling authorities and their affiliated groups.

From its inception, the genre of national history that emerged in 19th-century Europe and the United States was closely tied to efforts to legitimise territorial expansion and colonial rule.

In the context of Indonesia’s current national history revision project, it is worth revisiting comparisons between how national histories were written under Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines and Suharto in Indonesia.

Historians in both countries should be recognised as active agents with their own interests and authority — not as passive participants or easily influenced figures.

During Suharto’s regime, one historian even withdrew from the state-led national history writing project due to disagreements, particularly over methodological approaches.

The project’s director marginalised historian Sartono Kartodirdjo — who championed a multidimensional approach — in favour of a more linear, state-centric narrative. Sartono’s more holistic perspective made space for a broader range of historical actors, including farmers and other often-overlooked communities.

A similar precedent can be traced back to the early years of Indonesian independence, when the government initiated efforts to document the country’s national history in the 1950s. At the time, the National History Writing Committee — comprising prominent scholars — organised Indonesia’s first National History Seminar.

Yet the initiative failed to produce an official national history, partly due to the same kind of unresolved methodological debates that resurfaced during Suharto’s rule.

    A project for whom?

Marcus Tullius Cicero, the Roman philosopher-turned-statesman, once said, historia magistra vitae est – history is the teacher of life.

Given the failures and controversies surrounding Indonesia’s earlier attempt to produce an official national history, the current revision project demands critical re-evaluation — and, if necessary, a complete halt.

Merely involving more historians to boost representation is not an adequate solution either.

The core issue lies not in revising history, but in advancing Indonesian historiography. Rather than pushing ahead with an extensive national history rewrite, the government should prioritise fostering diverse local history initiatives — through programmes such as the Cultural Endowment Fund or the Indonesiana Fund.

This approach would enable a more comprehensive and representative account of Indonesian history — one that integrates local perspectives while remaining connected to national and global narratives.

Saya pernah dan masih berkolaborasi untuk riset dengan beberapa lembaga di lingkungan Kementerian Kebudayaan seperti Museum dan Cagar Budaya Nasional, Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan, dan lainnya.

ALMATY, July 13 (Xinhua) — Cities today are not only economic hubs but also diplomatic centers, Serik Korzhumbayev, editor-in-chief of the Delovoy Kazakhstan newspaper, said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua at the “Dialogue of Mayors of the World – SCO Summit Cities” event held in Tianjin.

According to him, participation in the SCO cities dialogue has shown that respect for cultural diversity, dialogue at the people level and real cooperation at the city level are becoming the most important for the sustainable development of the countries of the region. Kazakhstan, as a bridge between the East and the West, between China and Central Asia, plays a key role in this process.

“Today we see how the humanitarian dimension is coming to the forefront within the SCO. It is especially important that the younger generation of the SCO member states have the opportunity to exchange experiences, learn from each other, and understand the values of their partners. This is the foundation for long-term peace and sustainable development,” said S. Korzhumbayev.

The expert also stressed that cities like Tianjin are becoming a model of “modernization with a human face,” where technology serves not only efficiency, but also the comfort of life, ecology, and safety.

The Tianjin meeting in preparation for the SCO summit this fall was a convincing confirmation that cities are becoming “laboratories” of a new format of international cooperation – more humane, technological and environmentally friendly. These cities are where connections, trust and images of the future are formed that will determine the course of development of the entire Eurasian space. –0–

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday said that it has made significant progress in Bihar by establishing direct contact with nearly all electors, achieving over 80% collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs) well ahead of the stipulated deadline of July 25.

With the support of 77,895 existing Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 20,603 newly appointed BLOs, field-level operations are being rigorously monitored by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) across all 243 Assembly Constituencies, involving 38 District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and 963 Assistant EROs (AEROs).

As of 6:00 PM on Saturday, a total of 6,32,59,497 Enumeration Forms, amounting to 80.11% of the target, have been collected — indicating that four out of every five electors in the state have already submitted their forms.

This extensive outreach is being supported by 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties, and over 4 lakh volunteers, with a focus on ensuring inclusion of senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and other vulnerable groups.

The ECI has completed 100% printing and nearly full distribution of EFs to electors found at their registered addresses. The collected forms are being swiftly digitised, with 4.66 crore EFs already uploaded onto ECINet, a newly developed integrated software system that replaces the earlier 40 ECI apps.

Electors are encouraged to submit their EFs along with eligibility documents to ensure their inclusion in the draft electoral rolls, which will be published on August 1, 2025. Those needing more time can submit documents until August 30, the last date for filing claims and objections.

With the current pace, the ECI is confident of surpassing its target well before the deadline, marking a major step forward in strengthening the electoral process in Bihar.

A Chinese defense spokesperson on Sunday dismissed Japanese claims that Chinese military aircraft had flown “abnormally close” to its planes, saying China’s response was legitimate and professional.

Japanese Air Self-Defense Force intelligence-gathering aircraft had engaged in repeated close-in surveillance efforts in China’s air defense identification zone over the East China Sea, said Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, in response to a question from the media.

Chinese aircraft took measures to identify, track and monitor the Japanese planes in accordance with the law, Jiang said. “Our response was entirely legitimate, reasonable, and conducted in a professional and standard manner.”

Close-in reconnaissance and harassment by Japanese military vessels and aircraft are sources of maritime and air security risks between China and Japan, said the spokesperson.

“We urge the Japanese side to work with China to foster an atmosphere conducive to the stable development of bilateral ties,” Jiang added.

PYONGYANG, July 13 (Xinhua) — Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), met on Saturday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is visiting the DPRK to attend the second strategic dialogue between the foreign ministers of the two countries, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.

During the talks between Kim Jong-un and S. Lavrov, “a broad exchange of views between the leadership of the two countries on a number of important issues for the conscientious implementation of the agreements reached at the historic high-level talks between the DPRK and Russia in June 2024” took place, the statement said.

The two countries share the same views on all strategic issues, which is consistent with the level of alliance, and this demonstrates the high strategic level established between the two countries, Kim Jong-un said.

The DPRK leader confirmed that his country “is ready to unconditionally support and encourage all measures taken by the Russian leadership to eliminate the root cause of the Ukrainian crisis in accordance with the spirit of the interstate treaty between the DPRK and Russia in the future,” KCNA reported, citing his words.

Kim Jong-un expressed confidence that “a coordinated and harmonious diplomatic stance by the two countries aimed at showing initiative and an active attitude towards the radically changing international geopolitical situation will make a positive contribution to ensuring peace and security in the region and the entire world.”

During the talks, S. Lavrov expressed readiness for “further strengthening of strategic and tactical cooperation and intensification of coordinated actions” between the two countries in the international arena, the report says.

The parties also expressed the readiness of the leadership of the two countries to “closely support and cooperate with each other on the path to thoroughly protecting the fundamental interests of the two countries, powerfully promoting the overall development of bilateral ties and ensuring the endless well-being of the peoples and their bright future.”

    S. Lavrov’s three-day visit took place at the invitation of the DPRK Foreign Ministry and will end on Sunday, KCNA reported. –0–

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Jiang Bin on Sunday denied Japanese claims that Chinese military aircraft flew “abnormally close” to Japanese aircraft, saying China’s actions were legal and professional.

Japan Air Self-Defense Force reconnaissance aircraft have repeatedly entered China’s air defense identification zone over the East China Sea to conduct close-range reconnaissance, Jiang Bin said.

Jiang Bin said Chinese military aircraft had taken measures to identify, track and monitor the Japanese aircraft in accordance with the law. “Our response was completely legal, reasonable and professional in accordance with standards,” he said.

The interference caused by Japanese military vessels and aircraft to the Chinese side during close-range reconnaissance and pursuit is a source of security threats in the maritime and airspace between China and Japan, Jiang Bin said.

“We call on the Japanese side to work with China to create an atmosphere conducive to the stable development of bilateral relations,” the Chinese defense official added. -0-

  • Axiom-4 splash down on July 15 at 3 pm: Jitendra Singh on Shubhanshu Shukla’s return

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday shared an update on the Axiom-4 International Space Station (ISS) Mission and said that the astronauts are expected to splash down on Earth on July 15 at 3:00 p.m. (Indian time).

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, currently on board the ISS, along with three other crew members – Peggy Whitson, Sławosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Tibor Kapu – will undock inside the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft from the Harmony module’s space-facing port for a return to Earth.

In a post on X, Jitendra Singh said, “As of now, undocking has been scheduled for tomorrow, 14th July at 4:30 PM IST. Arrival back to earth…. splash down scheduled for 15th July at 3:00 PM IST.”

“These timings have a margin window of approximately 1 hour. Further update, if any, shall be shared accordingly,” he added.

A splashdown is expected several hours after the undocking, near the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean.

IAF Group Captain Shukla is on a 14-day mission to the ISS. He became the first Indian to visit the ISS and the second Indian astronaut after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, who went to space in 1984.

On the orbital post, Shukla carried out seven India-specific experiments, taking a major step in advancing India’s Gaganyaan human space flight mission.

These included experiments to decode muscle loss, developing a brain-computer interface, and sprouting green gram and fenugreek seeds in space, among others.

The four astronauts completed experiments that included the Indian strain of Tardigrades, focusing on survival, revival, reproduction, and transcriptome: Myogenesis, which studied the impact of the space environment on human muscle cells; sprouting of methi and moong seeds, with relevance to crew nutrition; and the Cyanobacteria experiment, which studied the growth of two varieties with relevance to life support systems.

The experiments represent a significant leap in space science and technology, contributing critical knowledge to support Gaganyaan, Bhartiya Antariksha Station, and future planetary missions.

After landing, Shukla, along with other crew members, will undergo a rehabilitation programme (about seven days) under the supervision of the Flight Surgeons to adapt back to Earth’s gravity.

  • EU says it still wants US trade deal, will defend interests

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The European Union said on Saturday it was ready to retaliate to defend its interests if the United States pressed ahead with imposing a 30% tariff on European goods from August 1.

U.S. President Donald Trump latest salvo surprised the bloc, the United States’ largest trading partner, which had hoped to avoid an escalating trade war after intense negotiations and increasingly warm words from the White House.

Ursula von der Leyen, head of the EU executive which handles trade policy for the 27 member states, said the bloc was ready to keep working towards an agreement before August 1,but was willing to stand firm.

“We will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required,” she said of possible retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods entering Europe.

EU ambassadors will discuss next steps on Sunday, before trade ministers meet in Brussels on Monday for an extraordinary meeting. They will need to decide whether to impose tariffs on 21 billion euros of U.S. imports in retaliation against separate U.S. tariffs against steel and aluminium, or extend a suspension which lasts until the end of Monday.

The EU has so far held back from retaliating against the U.S., although it has readied two packages that could hit a combined 93 billion euros of U.S. goods

European capitals swiftly backed von der Leyen’s position.

German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche called for a “pragmatic outcome to the negotiations”.

Trump’s proposed tariffs”would hit European exporting companies hard. At the same time, they would also have a strong impact on the economy and consumers on the other side of the Atlantic,” she said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on X that the European Commission needed more than ever to “assert the Union’s determination to defend European interests resolutely”.

Retaliation might need to include so-called anti-coercion instruments if Trump did not back down, Macron said.

The tool, drawn up during Trump’s first term and used against China, allows the EU to go beyond traditional tariffs on goods and impose restrictions on trade in services, if it deems that a country is using tariffs to force a change in policy.

Spain’s Economy Ministry backed further negotiations but added that Spain and others in the EU were ready to take “proportionate countermeasures if necessary”.

Trump has periodically railed against the European Union, saying in February it was “formed to screw the United States”.

His biggest grievance is the U.S. merchandise trade deficit with the EU, which in 2024 amounted to $235 billion, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. The EU has repeatedly pointed to a U.S. surplus in services, arguing it in part redresses the balance.

    RETALIATION

Combining goods, services and investment, the EU and the United States are each other’s largest trading partners by far. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU said in March the trade dispute could jeopardise $9.5 trillion of business in the world’s most important commercial relationship.

Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament’s trade committee said he was now convinced the first stage of countermeasures should come into force on Monday, followed quickly by the second package.

Trump has said he would mirror any retaliatory moves.

Still, Trump has repeatedly announced sweeping tariffs in recent months, only to row back or suspend them before his own self-imposed deadlines. The expectation that he will again relent has led to increasingly muted responses on financial markets, which have recovered since plunging after his initial “Liberation Day” announcement of big global tariffs in April.

Three EU officials who spoke on condition on anonymity said they saw Trump’s latest threats as a negotiating ploy.

Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro at ING, said Trump’s move suggested that months of negotiations remained deadlocked and that the situation was inching towards a make-or-break moment for the transatlantic trade relationship.

“The EU will now have to decide whether to budge or to play hardball,” he said. “This will bring market volatility and even more uncertainty.”

Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank, noted that the brunt of the U.S. tariffs, if implemented, would be felt by U.S. consumers.

However, there would also be clear repercussions for the euro area economy, already struggling with weak growth.

The European Central Bank had used a 10% tariff on EU exports to the United States as the baseline in its latest economic projections, which put output growth in the euro area at 0.9% this year, 1.1% in 2026 and 1.3% in 2027.

It said a 20% U.S. tariff would curb growth by 1 percentage point over the same period and also pull down inflation to 1.8% in 2027, from 2.0% in the baseline scenario. It did not even offer an estimate for the possibility of a 30% tariff.

  • Unforgiving Swiatek crushes Anisimova 6-0 6-0 to win maiden Wimbledon crown

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Iga Swiatek took another stride towards tennis greatness by ruthlessly tearing apart American 13th seed Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-0 and lifting her first Wimbledon trophy on Saturday.

The big occasion turned into a nightmare for Anisimova who became the first woman to lose a Wimbledon final by that painful scoreline since 1911 and the first to do so at any major since Steffi Graf routed Natasha Zvereva at the 1988 French Open.

Already a U.S. Open champion and a four-times French Open winner, Swiatek’s demolition job at the All England Club meant that she became the youngest woman since a 20-year-old Serena Williams in 2002 to lift major titles on all three surfaces.

Her superb display on the sun-drenched lawns of London also ensured that she emerged as the first player since Monica Seles in 1992 to win her first six major finals.

“It’s something that is just surreal. I feel like tennis keeps surprising me, and I keep surprising myself,” Swiatek told reporters after hoisting the gilded Venus Rosewater Dish.

“I’m really happy with the whole process, how it looked like from the first day we stepped on a grasscourt. Yeah, I feel like we did everything for it to go in that direction without expecting it, just working really hard.

“It means a lot, and it gives me a lot of experience. Yeah, I don’t even know. I’m just happy.”

Swiatek’s triumph ended a barren 13-month run for the Polish 24-year-old, who served a short suspension late last year after an inadvertent doping violation linked to contaminated sleep medication melatonin.

“I want to thank my coach (Wim Fissette). With the ups and downs now, we showed everybody it’s working,” Swiatek added.

    SCORCHING START

On another warm afternoon on Centre Court, Swiatek got off to a scorching start by breaking a nervous Anisimova three times en route to dishing out the first bagel, prompting some spectators to get behind the shell-shocked American.

A frustrated Anisimova shrieked and desperately looked to her team in the stands for any kind of guidance after conceding yet another break point early in the second set and it was not long before her machine-like opponent pulled away further.

Anisimova continued to disappointingly crack under pressure, before Swiatek completed the brutal mauling in 57 minutes with a backhand winner on her second match point to become the first Wimbledon champion from Poland.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk celebrated with a picture of himself watching a post-match interview while holding a bowl of pasta and strawberries, Swiatek’s cheat meal at Wimbledon, while President Andrzej Duda was effusive in his praise.

“Iga! Today, on the grasscourts of Wimbledon, you wrote history – not only for Polish sport, but also for Polish pride. On behalf of the Republic of Poland – thank you,” Duda wrote.

Victory took Swiatek to 100 wins from 120 matches at the majors, making her the quickest to get to there since Williams in 2004, and denied Anisimova the chance to become the first American to win the title since her compatriot in 2016.

Swiatek jumped for joy on court before running towards her team in the stands to celebrate her triumph. The Friends fan was equally delighted to receive a congratulatory hug from American actress Courteney Cox, who was among the spectators.

All this while, Anisimova was left to wonder what could have been as she sat in her seat, before the tears began to flow during her on-court interview.

Few would have envisioned the American to hit the heights she did in the last fortnight after she fell outside the top 400 following her mental health break two years ago.

“I didn’t have enough today,” said Anisimova, who began the tournament with a 6-0 6-0 win over Yulia Putintseva but admitted to running out of gas in the final.

“I’m going to keep putting in the work, and I always believe in myself. I hope to be back again one day.”

It was bitter disappointment for U.S. fans hoping for an “American Slam” this year after Madison Keys won the Australian Open at the start of the year and Coco Gauff triumphed at the French Open last month.
