    SHENYANG, July 6 (Xinhua) — From July 1 to 5, 20 media representatives from 13 countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) visited the cities of Dalian and Shenyang in northeast China’s Liaoning Province to learn about local historical traditions and innovative development.

    Employees of news agencies, TV channels, newspapers and news websites from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Cambodia and other countries took part in the event at the invitation of the SCO China Committee on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation and the China International Media Exchange Center /CIPCC/.

    The journalists visited a port hub, a refrigeration equipment development and manufacturing enterprise, and an urban planning exhibition center in Dalian, and an automobile plant, a robotics company, and the Palace Complex in Shenyang.

    The foreign guests visited the abovementioned places with undisguised curiosity. They were interested in, among other things, ways to preserve the freshness of fruits throughout the entire process of cross-border transportation, measures to save energy and reduce emissions from cars using new energy sources, and the duration of continuous operation of a mobile robot on a single charge.

    They produced videos and also posted on social media to immediately share their impressions of the visit, praising China’s achievements in the development of intelligent technologies and green transformation, as well as the country’s excellent combination of history and modernity. -0-

  • Ukraine’s Zelenskiy says latest phone call with Trump his most productive yet

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday that his latest conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump this week was the best and “most productive” he has had to date.

    “Regarding the conversation with the president of the United States, which took place a day earlier, it was probably the best conversation we have had during this whole time, the most productive,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address.

    “We discussed air defence issues and I’m grateful for the willingness to help. The Patriot system is precisely the key to protection against ballistic threats.”

    Zelenskiy said the two leaders had discussed “several other important matters” that officials from the two sides would be considering in forthcoming meetings.

    Trump told reporters on Friday that he had a good call with Zelenskiy and restated his disappointment at a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin over what he said was Moscow’s lack of willingness to work toward a ceasefire.

    Asked whether the United States would agree to supply more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, as requested by Zelenskiy, Trump said: “They’re going to need them for defense… They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard.”

    Russia has intensified air attacks on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks. Moscow’s forces launched the largest drone attack of the 40-month-old war on the Ukrainian capital hours after Trump’s conversation with Putin on Thursday.

  • Israeli military says intercepted missile launched from Yemen

    The Israeli military said on Sunday that it has intercepted a missile launched from Yemen towards Israel.

    Sirens were activated across several areas in Israel in accordance with protocol, it said.

    Israel threatened Yemen’s Houthi movement with a naval and air blockade if it the Iran-aligned group persists with attacks on Israel, in what it says is solidarity with Gaza.

    Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have been firing at Israel and at shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade.

    Most of the dozens of missiles and drones they have launched have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes.

    Steve Smith’s magnificent 71 guided Australia to 221 for seven at stumps on day three of the second test against West Indies in Grenada on Saturday, helping the tourists to build a commanding 254-run lead despite late wickets and persistent rain interruptions.

    Australia, who began the day two wickets down after losing Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja on Friday, made it to lunch at 69 for three and appeared vulnerable on a pitch offering variable bounce and seam movement.

    Nathan Lyon’s nightwatchman role lasted 33 balls and yielded eight runs before he fell to Alzarri Joseph, with John Campbell taking the catch at third slip.

    At that point, Australia were crying out for some heroics, and up stepped Smith and Cameron Green, who combined for a crucial 93-run partnership that turned the tide inexorably in the visitors’ favour.

    Green contributed a vital 52, his highest score batting at number three, before falling immediately after reaching his half-century when he chopped a Shamar Joseph delivery on to his stumps.

    Smith, back in the side after missing the first test with a finger injury, found his rhythm after a cautious start, smashing a six off Roston Chase and hitting seven boundaries in a patient knock that spanned 119 balls.

    The veteran looked in complete control as he guided Australia through the middle sessions but his masterful innings ended when he was given out lbw to Justin Greaves after an unsuccessful review.

    “We’re in a nice spot,” Smith said. “I don’t think the wicket is going to get any better, it will probably do a few more tricks.

    “The new ball is going to be pretty crucial for us. Hopefully we can get up to somewhere around 300 and then we’ll see how it goes.”

    Travis Head provided explosive support with 39 from 60 balls, including four boundaries, before being bowled by a Shamar Joseph delivery that nipped back sharply and caught him completely off guard.

    Beau Webster managed just two runs before edging Greaves to slip, but Alex Carey helped to avert a mini-crisis with an unbeaten 26 that included some aggressive strokeplay.

    The pitch continued to pose challenges through the day, with balls keeping low at times and offering variable bounce that troubled the batsmen.

    West Indies’ bowlers toiled hard on the surface, with Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph and Greaves claiming two wickets apiece, but their efforts were undermined by Australia’s patient accumulation of runs.

    With Carey and Pat Cummins at the crease overnight, Australia’s imposing advantage leaves West Indies facing an uphill battle.

    Shubman Gill joined elite company when he followed up his captain’s knock of 269 in the first innings with 161 in the second as England struggled to find a chink in the armour of the man nicknamed “The Prince” at Edgbaston on Saturday.

    As India piled on the runs to set the hosts a mammoth target of 608, Gill became only the fifth man to score 400 runs in a test, joining an illustrious list including England’s Graham Gooch, Australian Mark Taylor, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and West Indian Brian Lara.

    Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad took 604 test wickets but struggled to find a weakness in Gill’s batting.

    “As a bowler, I’ll be looking for technical things so I could expose him, but he’s not shown any obvious signs of dismissal and he’s played stylishly,” Broad told Sky Sports.

    “He’s played with huge responsibility, under big pressure. It’s breathtaking and deserves all the applause he is going to get.”

    India have never won a test match at Edgbaston but the venue will go down in history as the first ground where they registered more than 1,000 runs in a test match (1,011).

  • F-16 escorts plane out of area after airspace incursion near Trump’s golf course

    An F-16 U.S. fighter jet on Saturday intercepted a general aviation aircraft that violated a temporary restriction of the airspace over U.S. President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, the U.S military said in a statement.

    The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said the incident, which occurred around 2:39 p.m. (1839 GMT), marked the fifth unauthorized incursion of the restricted airspace on Saturday. A spokesperson confirmed the jet was an F-16.

    NORAD aircraft conducted a so-called headbutt maneuver to get the civilian pilot’s attention and the aircraft was safely escorted out of the area, NORAD said in a statement.

    The White House had no immediate comment on the incident. NORAD has reported multiple similar incidents in recent weeks, and is urging general aviation pilots to check all notifications before taking off in the area.

    The video carried by state media showed dozens attending a ceremony to mark Ashura, the holiest day of the Shi’ite Muslim calendar, standing chanting as Khamenei entered a hall where many government functions are held.

    For apparent security reasons, Khamenei had issued pre-taped messages during the war which started on June 13, and avoided public appearances.

    On June 26, in pre-recorded remarks aired on state television, Khamenei promised that Iran would not surrender despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls.

  • Israel to send delegation to Qatar for Gaza talks despite ‘unacceptable’ Hamas demands

    Israel will send a delegation to Qatar on Sunday for talks on a possible Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the changes requested by Hamas to a ceasefire proposal were unacceptable.

    Palestinian group Hamas said on Friday it had responded to a U.S.-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal in a “positive spirit”, a few days after U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel had agreed “to the necessary conditions to finalize” a 60-day truce.

    But in a sign of the potential challenges still facing the two sides, a Palestinian official from a militant group allied with Hamas said concerns remained over humanitarian aid, passage through the Rafah crossing in southern Israel to Egypt and clarity over a timetable for Israeli troop withdrawals.

    “The changes that Hamas seeks to make to the Qatari proposal were conveyed to us last night and are not acceptable to Israel,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement late on Saturday.

    The prime minister’s office added that the delegation will still fly to Qatar for talks over a possible deal to “continue the efforts to secure the return of our hostages based on the Qatari proposal that Israel agreed to.”

    Netanyahu, who is due to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, has repeatedly said Hamas must be disarmed, a position the militant group, which is thought to be holding 20 living hostages, has so far refused to discuss.

    The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

    Gaza’s health ministry says Israel’s retaliatory military assault on the enclave has killed over 57,000 Palestinians. It has also caused a hunger crisis, displaced Gaza’s entire population internally and prompted accusations of genocide and war crimes. Israel denies the accusations.

The evidence is compelling — Hong Kong ranked globally number two as an arbitration seat under the 2025 Queen Mary University of London and White & Case International Arbitration Survey; last year, over 76 per cent of the cases handled by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre were international, with claims averaging HK$375 million, reflecting international trust in Hong Kong’s role in high-stakes cases.

    We recognise that modern challenges require diverse solutions, which is why we are promoting mediation in the Greater Bay Area. The recent establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong highlights this commitment, as the city positions itself as the capital of mediation.
     
    In terms of local capacity building, we have generally mandated mediation clauses in government contracts and have been enhancing training of mediators. 

    For regional integration, we are closely collaborating with our GBA partners to deploy Hong Kong mediation organisations to handle commercial mediation cases as referred to by the GBA courts; export Hong Kong’s best practice to develop GBA standard, including specialised mediation rules; and establish a unified GBA Mediators Panel for cross-border expertise. 

    The Greater Bay Area: Where Policies Meet Practice

    These initiatives reflect Hong Kong’s strategic role in the GBA. Innovative policies have created unprecedented opportunities. 

    For example, a Shenzhen company with Hong Kong shareholders of any investment ratio can now choose Hong Kong law to govern contracts, and choose Hong Kong as the arbitration seat. And the impact is visible: international investors can benefit from comprehensive legal protection under Hong Kong’s common law regime while navigating in Mainland’s dynamic markets with certainty and efficiency.

    In an era of growing complexity, businesses need to anchor in a jurisdiction that offers stability and connectivity.   • Musk announces forming of ‘America Party’ in further break from Trump

    The tattered bromance between Republican President Donald Trump and his main campaign financier Elon Musk took another fractious turn on Saturday when the space and automotive billionaire announced the formation of a new political party, saying Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill would bankrupt America.

    A day after asking his followers on his X platform whether a new U.S. political party should be created, Musk declared in a post on Saturday that “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

    “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he wrote.

    The announcement from Musk comes after Trump signed his self-styled “big, beautiful” tax-cut and spending bill into law on Friday, which Musk fiercely opposed.

    Musk, who became the word’s richest man thanks to his Tesla car company and his SpaceX satellite firm, spent hundreds of millions on Trump’s re-election and led the Department of Government Efficiency from the start of the president’s second term aimed at slashing government spending.

    The two have since fallen out spectacularly over disagreements about the bill.

    Musk said previously that he would start a new political party and spend money to unseat lawmakers who supported the bill.

    Trump earlier this week threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk’s companies receive from the federal government.

    Republicans have expressed concern that Musk’s on-again, off-again feud with Trump could hurt their chances to protect their majority in the 2026 midterm congressional elections.

    Asked on X what was the one thing that made him go from loving Trump to attacking him, Musk said: “Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.”

    He referenced the growth of Greece from subjugation to preeminence in the ancient world in another tweet, saying: “The way we’re going to crack the uniparty system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield.”

    There was no immediate comment from Trump or the White House on Musk’s announcement.

    The feud with Trump, often described as one between the world’s richest man and the world’s most powerful, has led to several precipitous falls in Tesla’s share price.

    The stock soared after Trump’s November reelection and hit a high of more than $488 in December, before losing more than half of its value in April and closing last week out at $315.35.

    Despite Musk’s deep pockets, breaking the Republican-Democratic duopoly will be a tall order, given that it has dominated American political life for more than 160 years, while Trump’s approval ratings in polls in his second term have generally held firm above 40 percent, despite often divisive policies.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary on Sunday, describing him as the “immortal son of the nation” and lauding his lifelong dedication to India’s unity, pride, and development.

    In a post on X, PM Modi said, “A heartfelt tribute to the immortal son of the nation, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, on his birth anniversary. He sacrificed his life to protect the honour, dignity, and pride of the country. His ideals and principles are invaluable in the construction of a developed and self-reliant India.”

    The Prime Minister also shared a video clip highlighting Dr. Mookerjee’s life, values, and his vision for India.

    “Bengal’s son, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, used to say that any nation can only be secure through its own energy. He had immense faith in the nation’s resources and in the capable people of this country,” PM Modi noted.

    Reflecting on Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions post-Independence, the Prime Minister said,

He believed that if the government, educational institutions, and industrial organizations worked together, India would soon achieve economic independence.”

    Shipyards in south China’s Guangzhou, one of the country’s top shipbuilding bases, are operating at full capacity this summer as they secure surging orders for high-tech, low-carbon vessels aimed at meeting global green shipping targets.

    Last month, Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited began constructing a 230-meter-long LNG dual-fuel car carrier for a client in the Republic of Korea. The vessel will rank among the world’s largest of its type, and will be powered by both fuel oil and natural gas.

    General manager Zhou Xuhui said the company has more than 90 ships on order, 80 percent of which are designed as high-tech, high-value-added green vessels. Deliveries are scheduled through 2028.

    Also in June, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited started building China’s first LPG/liquid ammonia carrier powered by ammonia and another fuel.

    Ammonia, a major chemical industry feedstock, has a high energy density and due to its carbon-free nature, produces only water and nitrogen when fully combusted. This makes it a highly promising fuel for decarbonizing shipping.

    A company executive told Xinhua that Huangpu Wenchong currently holds orders for 16 such gas carriers, and has made independent breakthroughs in small and medium-sized gas ship technology, while expanding into new-energy ship markets to support low-carbon growth.

    In the first four months of 2025, the company secured over 13.7 billion yuan (about 1.92 billion U.S. dollars) in new contracts, up 111 percent year on year.

    Also in June, the world’s first pure ammonia-powered demonstration vessel, the Anhui, successfully completed its maiden voyage in Hefei, east China’s Anhui Province, marking a major step forward for green shipping.

    Guangdong Province, a major shipbuilding base in China, has maintained growth momentum despite a slowdown in global orders. From January to May, Guangdong’s output of completed ships rose 2.5 percent year on year, and its order backlog increased 29.3 percent, according to the provincial shipbuilding industry association.

    Guangzhou, which is Guangdong’s capital city, has developed a complete shipbuilding supply chain, said Chen Jianrong, secretary-general of the association.

    Local authorities have pledged to continue building Guangzhou into a hub for marine innovation, targeting cutting-edge sectors such as the deep sea, green and smart marine industries.

    “Guangzhou was born by the sea and thrives because of the sea,” said Guo Yonghang, Party chief of the city. “We must accelerate the cultivation of new quality productive forces in the marine sector and strengthen breakthroughs in key core technologies.”

    After over a decade of research, Guangzhou HG Marine Co., Ltd. has developed a globally leading rim-driven electric propulsion system for ships.

    According to Qiu Xiangyao, head of HG Marine, traditional ship propellers generate significant underwater noise that can scare away fish, and their mechanical drives can also cause oil pollution in the sea. That is why many countries are turning to rim-driven electric thrusters, which feature zero pollution, low noise, and high efficiency.

    “The company has maintained strong growth this year, with orders surging and production scheduled more than a year ahead,” said Qiu, who added that the export of the megawatt-class rim thrusters has opened up broader international markets for the company and secured stable orders for future ocean-going fishery processing vessels.

    As Guangzhou ramps up its shipbuilding innovation and green technology, this momentum reflects a broader push across China and the global shipping industry to cut carbon emissions.

    Following years of intense negotiations, nations reached a landmark agreement in April to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping by setting mandatory fuel standards and introducing an industry-wide carbon pricing mechanism.

    The framework, approved by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization, is the first to combine mandatory emissions limits and greenhouse gas pricing across an entire industry sector.

    Scheduled for formal adoption in October 2025 and implementation by 2027, the measures will apply to large ocean-going vessels exceeding 5,000 gross tonnage, which are responsible for approximately 85 percent of carbon dioxide emissions from the global shipping fleet.

    Countries around the world are advancing green shipping through the adoption of clean energy and technology upgrades. China, positioning itself as a strong advocate of sustainable shipping, rolled out an action plan at the end of 2023 to build a preliminary green shipbuilding development system by 2025.

    Several breakthroughs have already emerged. In March, the world’s first floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel with a carbon capture and storage facility was delivered in Shanghai.

    By capturing the carbon dioxide generated during sailing and oil production and using the exhaust heat energy to generate electricity, the AGOGO FPSO, measuring 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width, can achieve both environmental protection and energy savings.

    In a birthday-eve message, the Dalai Lama said, “As for myself, I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much potential to contribute to the world through its emphasis on peace of mind and compassion. I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold.”

    “All particles in my mind contain thoughts from Nalanda. And it’s Indian ‘dal’ and ‘chapati’ that have built this body. I am mentally and physically a son of India,” the Dalai Lama, in his addresses, is often quoted as saying.

    “India and Tibet share a relationship of ‘guru’ (teacher) and ‘chela’ (disciple). When I see some part of my ‘guru’ being corrupt, as a ‘chela’ I feel ashamed,” he said.

    The 14th Dalai Lama was born on July 6, 1935, in a small village in the remote Amdo region of Tibet.

    An elderly devotee emphasized the spiritual significance of the day: “This is an important festival for Prayagraj. On this day, saints begin Chaumasa, during which they stay in one place and devote themselves to worship. According to tradition, Lord Vishnu goes into a deep sleep for four months starting today, and all auspicious events like marriages are suspended during this period. When the Lord awakens on Kartik Ekadashi, these activities resume. It is believed that taking a holy dip today fulfills all wishes.”

    The 10th day of the first month of Muharram of the Muslim calendar marks the day of martyrdom of Imam Hussain, who was killed by the army of King Yazid in 680 AD on the banks of the Euphrates River in Iraq in the Karbala area. The besieged family of Imam Hussain, his family and companions, were denied drinking water even when they were camped at the bank of the Euphrates. Even the 6-month-old Ali Asghar was denied drinking water by the army of the Yazid. Imam Hussain chose to sacrifice himself and his family and companions rather than accept the supremacy of evil over the truth.

    Shia Muslims commemorate the event by taking out processions and chest-beating, but the mourning of Muharram is sacrosanct to both the Shia and the Sunni Muslims alike.

Discussions will focus on deepening the Strategic Partnership between the two nations in areas of mutual interest such as trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people ties.

    PM Modi arrived in Brazil after concluding his visit to Argentina, where he held a bilateral meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei.

    No dull rows of chairs and tables, no endless slides of charts and numbers — instead, a gleaming statue of Hermes, the Olympian god of competition and the “god of esports,” took center stage, while a virtual concert “on Mars” blazed across a giant screen in the background.

    Standing out among the meeting venues at the 2025 Global Digital Economy Conference, this hall hosted one of its headline events, the International Esports Development Forum, where industry leaders and players gathered to explore how esports is transforming entertainment and fueling growth in the global digital economy.

    Industry observers believe that esports has grown into an emerging industry that can no longer be ignored, with more and more traditional sports events now including esports competitions.

    At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, for example, esports made its debut as an official medal event, where the Chinese team took home four gold medals across seven categories.

    The 20th Asian Games in Japan’s Aichi-Nagoya in 2026, will expand esports events even further, featuring 11 disciplines including Pro Evolution Soccer and League of Legends. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee has announced that the first Olympic Esports Games will be held in Saudi Arabia in 2027.

    The intensity, the focus, and the sheer will to win that esports players exhibit are no different from other athletes, according to Nicholas Khoo, advisor to the Board of Directors of the Global Esports Federation.

    Khoo called the rise of esports “unstoppable,” with growing public attention and an expanding global market adding fresh momentum to the development. At the same time, the inclusion of esports in the event systems of the International Olympic Committee is further promoting the sport’s healthy growth.

    “Esports today is driving the digital economy, which stays as a primary engine of global growth,” said Irina Bokova, former director-general of UNESCO, at the forum. “Within this ecosystem, esports is rapidly emerging as a transformative force. It is redefining the boundaries between entertainment sports and technology while forging connections that transcend international borders and linguistic barriers.”

    Participants noted that China boasts the world’s largest esports market, leading globally in both player base and industry growth potential.

    According to the 2024 China esports industry report released by China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association, the number of esports users in China reached 490 million in 2024, up 0.42 percent year on year, marking the largest esports user base in the world. Meanwhile, the industry’s actual sales revenue stood at 27.57 billion yuan (about 3.85 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024, an increase of 4.62 percent from the previous year.

    That scale is powered by new technology. According to Li Ji, an industry analyst, today’s esports industry is built on a fully digital foundation, seamlessly integrating frontier technologies, from computing power to algorithms and artificial intelligence, and stands as a model of cross-sector innovation.

    “Esports is becoming a testing ground for cutting-edge innovations such as network communications, augmented reality and artificial intelligence,” said Li Xiaolei, vice chairman of the China Culture Administration Association. “From the perspective of culture, through innovative storytelling and character-based performances, esports is taking Chinese stories to the world in a way that resonates with young people.”

    Highlighting the great potential of the sector, Li Xiaolei said that China’s esports market size is expected to surpass 300 billion yuan in 2026, driving the scale of related industries beyond 1 trillion yuan, becoming an important growth driver of the digital economy.

    According to the global esports industry development report co-released by an institute under China Media Group (CMG) and China’s esports giant Tencent, four Chinese cities, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen, ranked among the top ten on the global esports city influence index. He Wenyi, secretary-general of the national sports industry research base at Peking University, noted that policy support will be essential to foster new business models as the industry evolves.

    China’s cities are already well-positioned to tap into this promising industry. Ranking first on the esports city influence index list, Shanghai proposed the vision of becoming a global esports capital in 2017. In 2019, the city issued 20 measures to promote the healthy development of the esports industry.

    The Chinese capital is another major player. In June this year, Beijing issued measures to support the high-quality development of its gaming and esports industry. These measures aim to support enterprises in game development and publishing within Beijing, while promoting industrial clustering domestically and encouraging companies to expand overseas.

    “Beijing will fully leverage its strengths in technological innovation and international exchange to develop the esports industry into a key engine for building itself into a benchmark city in the global digital economy,” said Xu Xinchao, deputy secretary general of the Beijing municipal government.

    While esports is booming in China, the industry faces many challenges. A report from a research institute under People.cn found that many tournaments and clubs remain heavily dependent on sponsorships and prize money, leaving them vulnerable in economic downturns. Experts also caution against blind expansion without thoughtful planning. Cities often adopt similar strategies without leveraging their unique strengths, risking repetitive and uncompetitive development.

    The 22nd International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO 2025) will be held in Russia from November 23 to December 2. The order to this effect has been signed.

    The federal territory of Sirius will be the venue for the Olympiad. By July 16, the Ministry of Education must approve the composition of the organizing committee for its preparation and holding, as well as the plan of relevant events.

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide visas to participants and guests of the event, as well as journalists, without charging fees.

    IJSO is an international multidisciplinary Olympiad for schoolchildren under 15 years old. The students are required to have both theoretical knowledge and experimental skills in 3 subjects: physics, chemistry and biology.

    The Olympiad has been held annually in December since 2004. In previous years, IJSO was held in Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Azerbaijan, the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Iran, South Africa, Qatar, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Nigeria, and Botswana. Teams from over 70 countries participate in it.

    The Russian team has been participating in competitions since the very first Olympiad and is considered one of the strongest – traditionally, Russian schoolchildren bring home several gold medals from tournaments.

    The preparation and holding of the Olympiad in Russia will be ensured within the framework of the implementation of the events of the federal project “All the Best for Children”, which is part of the new national project “Youth and Children”.

    A fleet of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy led by the aircraft carrier Shandong made its first visit to Hong Kong, a move widely seen as not only a demonstration of military strength but also a step toward deepening ties between Hong Kong and the mainland.

    The naval fleet, comprising the aircraft carrier Shandong, the Yan’an missile destroyer, the Zhanjiang missile destroyer, and the Yuncheng missile frigate, arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday to begin a five-day visit.

    On the day the naval fleet arrived, hundreds — if not thousands — of Hong Kong residents gathered along the shore to watch. Local media rushed to cover the story.

    Chief executive of China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee said that both the steadfast presence of the PLA garrison in Hong Kong and the cordial visit by the modernized naval fleet have made the “Pearl of the Orient” shine brighter, reflecting the country’s ability and determination in safeguarding peace, while allowing Hong Kong, under “one country, two systems,” to continue to play its part in the nation’s development.

    Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR government Chan Kwok-ki attended the deck reception on the Shandong aircraft carrier. He believed the visit by the naval fleet allowed the wider public in Hong Kong to witness the strength of the country’s military and would help enhance students’ sense of national identity and pride.

    Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR government Cheuk Wing-hing shared on social media that he toured the ski-jump flight deck, arresting cables, carrier-based fighter jets, and helicopters aboard the Shandong.

    “The rapid progress of our country’s national defense is truly remarkable,” Cheuk said. “I am deeply moved and feel proud of our nation.”

    The Shandong aircraft carrier was open to the public for visits. Starry Lee, a member of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, said that this allowed people to experience firsthand the remarkable achievements of the country’s naval modernization, and held significant meaning in fostering a stronger sense of patriotism in Hong Kong society.

    Friday was the first open day of the fleet’s visit to Hong Kong, with a focus on student visitors. More than 10,000 visits were made aboard the Shandong, Zhanjiang, and Yuncheng ships.

    “My ancestral home is Shandong. When I first stepped onto the deck, I couldn’t help but cry. Our country has truly become strong!” a lecturer at Hong Kong Metropolitan University surnamed Wong said.

    Some secondary school students from Macao were organized by their schools to travel to Hong Kong for the visit. They happily toured the ships while taking photos with their smartphones to share with classmates who missed the visit. They said that boarding the warships was more than just a visit; it allowed them to witness the long history of China and the country’s remarkable progress.

    Seeing the modern carrier-based fighter jets and the spirited, high-morale crew aboard the vessels left a deep impression on Paul Chan, financial secretary of the HKSAR government.

    Chan said that the visit by the naval fleet fully reflected the country’s deep affection for Hong Kong. “A strong nation must have a strong military, and our country’s navy will only grow stronger,” he remarked.

    “Stepping aboard the domestically built aircraft carrier Shandong and standing on the deck of this steel giant filled me with excitement,” Jeffrey Lam, a member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR, said.

    Just as the Shandong sailed forward with strength and determination, Hong Kong, with the support of the country, will surely overcome all challenges and continue to enjoy prosperity and stability, Lam added.

    Good day NEA!  Standing before you today is the daughter of Afro-Caribbean West Indian parents from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands — a mother who was a floor nurse and later a graduate of John Hopkins who became a public health administrator and a father who is an alumnus of Hampton University, an HBCU in Hampton, Virginia, and later with the GI Bill, an alumnus of Howard University Law School, now a retired judge emeritus. “Das who I fah.”

    A saying I grew up with comes from my Dad who believes and still says, “Nothing is so complicated that it cannot be simplified by hard work,” and I thank God each day that I get to do this hard work. As someone in recent political history has said, “hard work is good work!”

    So, who am I?  

    I’m an Afro-Caribbean West Indian woman from St. Thomas, V.I. who graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School at 16 years old, then attended Hampton University as a physics major on a music scholarship, played clarinet, became a section leader in the HU Marching Pirates, and performed in the Rose Bowl parade;

    Who graduated from Hampton U with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, then interned for two years at the NASA Langley Research Center in Langley, Virginia, in the field of unsteady aerodynamics where I created and ran computer programs for the wind tunnel calculations; not knowing that my path followed in the footsteps of Black women such as Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Goble Johnson, and Mary Jackson, the Hidden Figures; 

    Who got called out of programming & research into the field of teaching & learning and has been an Associate Professor of Mathematics for the past 25 years and will be starting my 26th year this fall semester; 

    Who stands on the shoulders and graves of so, so many who came before me and many others of my generation; the ancestors who took action for me, advocated for me at a time when basic rights were not granted to people who looked like me, “speak wid ah accent” like me, or wear their hair like me. 

    Who am I?  My brothers, sisters, and kin, I am Teresa M. Hodge, your 2025 Higher Educator of the Year, and I will continue to fight, advocate, and act for the rights of all educators, but especially for our higher education professionals, and I humbly accept this recognition to represent higher education for the upcoming year. I will boldly and unapologetically shine the light of truth where there are lies and use my voice to bring awareness to and for higher ed issues across this nation.

    May we all learn to build the same kind of resilience our ancestors did as we face of our current adversities; may we endeavor to build our power through allyship with our community partners, and may we continue to fight for the respect we deserve as professionals in our respective fields regardless of our classifications. We must remain true to who we are and NEVER EVER diminish our light and its brightness because how else can we light a path for those who will come behind us?  

    Before closing, I humbly ask, as the cat mom to seven rescues, that when adding a fur baby to your human family, please consider the option of adopting a rescue pet to clear the shelters and give these pets a loving “furever” home.

    During a working visit to Krasnoyarsk Krai, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko assessed the infrastructure of the Institute of Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and, together with Krasnoyarsk Krai Governor Mikhail Kotyukov, spoke with scientists.

    The Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Krasnoyarsk has youth laboratories where specialists conduct applied research within the framework of state and commercial orders. The main customers are enterprises interested in the latest technical solutions.

    The Deputy Prime Minister noted the demand for such research and development among companies. Over three years, from 2023 to 2025, youth laboratories of the Kirensky Institute of Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences attracted more than 800 million rubles in extra-budgetary funding – this is a high figure.

    Krasnoyarsk scientists presented research conducted by youth laboratories to improve the quality of Russian communications satellites. This includes upgrading onboard antennas, improving payloads, and studying metasurfaces.

    On the campus of the Siberian Federal University (SFU), Dmitry Chernyshenko and Mikhail Kotyukov discussed preparations for the World Youth Festival forum in Krasnoyarsk in 2026. The forum will bring together 10,000 delegates aged 14 to 35, half of whom will be foreign guests. SFU will be the main venue for the forum. The goal of such events is to demonstrate Russia’s capabilities and potential in the field of international youth cooperation.

    In 2024, Krasnoyarsk Krai was already one of 30 subjects of the Russian Federation where events of the regional program of the World Youth Festival were held, which took place in the federal territory of Sirius in Sochi. Then the region received delegations from 21 countries. Krasnoyarsk was visited, in particular, by representatives of Spain, Argentina, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Mexico, Congo, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan.

    Dmitry Chernyshenko assessed the work of the Regional Coordination Center of Krasnoyarsk Krai, where data from various state information systems is received in real time.

    The Deputy Prime Minister also visited the Holy Dormition Monastery and its cultural center.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: Seychelles media take steps toward stronger disaster preparedness

    Workshop explores inclusive risk communication, media resilience, and the future of journalism education

    From 23 to 27 June 2025, media professionals came together for a workshop on disaster preparedness and response, co-organized by the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD), UNDRR, and UNESCO. The five-day event aimed to build media capacity to inform, engage, and protect the public in the face of increasing climate-related disasters.

    The training, supported by the CREWS Initiative South-West Indian Ocean project, formed part of the broader Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative and drew on UNESCO’s Model Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan for Media Institutions. Sessions focused on everything from developing business continuity strategies to ensuring inclusive and accurate disaster coverage during disasters.

    “For me, this workshop has been an eye-opener,” said Marie-Claude d’Unienville of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). “We need to think about the risks we have in our own working environment.”

    The workshop also placed a strong emphasis on leadership and institutional planning by engaging directly with media managers. Veronica Maria, Managing Director of Today in Seychelles, reflected on the value of this approach:

    “I learned how to do a risk assessment plan, how to monitor the plan every six to twelve months-that will be a good guide for business continuity.”

    Participants had the opportunity to examine disaster scenarios from multiple perspectives and to simulate newsroom decision-making under crisis conditions. This practical lens encouraged reflection on both external hazards-like road closures and internet outages-and internal risks that could disrupt media operations.

    A dedicated session on disability inclusion in disaster communication struck a particular chord. Christine Winslow, a disability rights advocate with Ramp Up Rise Up, emphasized the urgency of placing accessibility at the center of preparedness efforts:

    “[Persons with disabilities] do get forgotten and ignored and are most times an afterthought-especially when it comes to implementing and providing accessibility.”

    Her remarks were met with strong support from participants, many of whom acknowledged that the needs of persons with disabilities are too often overlooked in emergency communication.

    The DRMD reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media sector. “Not only do we want to empower media to educate our public but also to protect themselves. They have to be mindful of their own personal safety when reporting onsite in crisis time”, said Jade Landry.

    The workshop also brought in a forward-looking educational component. Mr. Samuel Mundua, Senior Lecturer of Journalism at the University of Seychelles, attended as part of efforts to develop the country’s first formally accredited journalism programme. “The content and local case studies from this workshop will inform our new curriculum, especially around environmental and disaster risk topics,” he shared.

    As small island developing states like Seychelles face mounting climate threats, this workshop marks a significant step in building stronger bridges between media, government, and academia to ensure that risk communication in Seychelles is inclusive, evidence-based, and resilient.

    The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) joined global auditors at the Assembly of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA), that took place in Malta from 1 to 3 July 2025. Represented by Mr. Animesh Kumar, Head of the UNDRR Office in Bonn, UNDRR’s engagement underscores its growing collaboration with WGEA to strengthen national oversight of disaster risk reduction (DRR) through environmental auditing.

    Driving risk-informed governance through auditing

    Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) are key national actors in ensuring governments are prevent and are prepared for disasters and climate-related shocks. Through WGEA, INTOSAI supports SAIs in conducting performance audits that evaluate how well countries manage environmental risks-including resilience to floods, extreme heat, and other natural hazards.

    UNDRR’s participation at the WGEA Assembly reflects a strategic alignment: both institutions promote stronger national accountability for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, grounded in international frameworks like the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

    “The official data and metrics, and other disaster risk reduction tools coordinated by UNDRR, and the work of Supreme Auditing Institutions are closely aligned. The two entities can co-benefit by collaborating in their collective efforts to strengthen accountability and transparency in risk governance,” said Animesh Kumar.

    Audits can reveal gaps in planning, coordination, and implementation-and offer pathways to improved governance. The WGEA’s audit database already includes 59 audits related to DRR, such as:

    • India: Reviewing groundwater and stormwater systems to reduce urban flood risk.
    • Turkey: Auditing early warning systems and local flood preparedness.
    • UK: Assess preparedness for future extreme weather events

    Mr Charles Deguara, Auditor General of Malta said: “In the present circumstances, urgent and united action is required to ensure climate risk issues are duly addressed. It is our role, as national audit institutions, to assist our administrations through our audit work.” From data to action

    UNDRR brings extensive expertise in disaster risk governance, robust data systems, and a strong global convening role-uniquely positioning it to support SAIs in evaluating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies.

    Building on this momentum, UNDRR and WGEA are exploring collaboration on knowledge building, capacity development and data sharing on disaster risk reduction audits. This initiative aims to build a skilled network of auditors ready to integrate DRR and adaptation into their national audit agendas, bolstered by growing coherence between DRR and climate action.

    “Building resilience to climate and disaster risks requires coherent policies, consistent implementation, and strong oversight. Through the WGEA, we support audit institutions in promoting accountability and helping ensure that climate and disaster risk policies are aligned, effective, and transparent”, highlighted Mr Sami Yläoutinen, the Auditor General of the National Audit Office of Finland, and the current chair of INTOSAI WGEA.

    As WGEA expands its focus on climate and disaster-related audits, sustained collaboration with UNDRR can enhance policy coherence and strengthen accountability. By integrating disaster risk into environmental audits, this partnership will help translate global frameworks into national results, advancing resilience, transparency, and sustainable development.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: OFNAA commends primary and secondary students for assisting in promoting healthy Internet use through creative works (with photos)

         The Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (OFNAA) held a prize presentation ceremony today (July 5) for the “Healthy Student Video Contest 2025”, the “‘Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance’ Slogan and Colouring Competition 2024-25” and the “Healthy Mobile App Sticker Design Competition” in commendation of the winning students and teams for assisting in promoting the message of staying away from obscene and indecent articles online through creative works.
     
         A total of around 20 000 primary and secondary students participated in the three competitions which offered 60 major awards altogether. The adjudication panel comprised OFNAA representatives and industry professionals. Winners from 25 primary schools and 20 secondary schools (the list is set out in Annex) will have their works uploaded to OFNAA’s website for public viewing.
     
         Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, the Assistant Director of Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, Mr Chris Fung, said that with the prevalence of various video streaming or video sharing platforms and social media in recent years given rise by the fascinating cyber world, children and young people may be exposed to obscene and indecent materials as well as distorted values while using the Internet, affecting their physical and mental wellbeing. Sharing of harmful materials on the Internet, or even producing and uploading such content on the Internet, may be in breach of the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance (Cap. 390) (COIAO). To protect children and young people from the influence of obscene and indecent materials online, OFNAA has been adopting a multi-pronged approach by enhancing publicity and public education in tandem with proper regulation, so as to enhance the understanding of the public, especially children and young people, of the COIAO and to encourage them to stay away from harmful materials and to develop the concept of the proper use of the Internet. 
     
         OFNAA has continued to enhance its publicity and education efforts over the past year. In addition to organising the abovementioned competitions, OFNAA arranged nearly 100 roving drama performances for schools in this academic year, attracting nearly 15 000 primary and secondary students. Roving exhibitions were also held in Lam Tin, Lok Fu, Tin Shui Wai and Tseung Kwan O to promote more widely the message of healthy Internet use, attracting over 12 000 visitors.  
     
         OFNAA will continue to take forward these efforts and organise various activities including the “Healthy Information Student Ambassadors Scheme”, the “Healthy Chinese Public Speaking Competition” and the “Healthy Student Drama Contest” to further enhance the public’s understanding of the COIAO and promote the concept of healthy Internet use. 
     
         In addition, OFNAA has strengthened inter-departmental and inter-organisational collaboration to organise diverse and targeted activities for different stakeholders, including children and young people, parents, teaching staff members and the public. These included working with the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau to promote activities and information concerning the COIAO to children and young people through various channels and platforms including the Family Council, the “HKYouth+” youth mobile application, and the Government Youth Portal (Youth.gov.hk), as well as partnering with the Hong Kong Police Force to organise “Wise Use of Internet” talks at various districts to share common online pitfalls with members of the Junior Police Call and students in an interesting and interactive manner, with a view to helping them develop proper values and deepening their understanding of the COIAO.  
     
         OFNNA also organised various activities to help teaching staff members strengthen their relevant work in schools, including organising more than 250 school talks and three online briefing sessions for about 100 principals of primary and secondary schools or their representatives in 2024, as well as taking part in the seminars of professional development programme for teachers organised by the Education Bureau this year to introduce the COIAO and relevant activities and resources to over 200 primary school teachers. Additionally, OFNAA organises various activities for parents including talks, workshops, and webinars from time to time, working jointly with parents and schools to help children and young people establish proper values and strengthen their ability to reject harmful materials. 
     
         OFNAA will continue to take forward diverse publicity and public education work and work with various stakeholders to enhance public awareness of the COIAO and promote the message of staying away from obscene and indecent content online.
