  • Mission could not be accomplished: ISRO Chief Narayanan on EOS-09 satellite launch

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) encountered technical issues during the third stage of the launch of the EOS-09 satellite, which led to the mission being unsuccessful, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said on Sunday.

“During the functioning of the third stage, we observed an anomaly, and the mission could not be accomplished. After detailed analysis, we will provide further updates,” Narayanan told scientists after the launch.

In a post on X, ISRO said, “Today, the 101st launch was attempted. PSLV-C61 performance was normal up to the second stage. Due to an observation in the third stage, the mission could not be accomplished.”

The PSLV-C61 flight sequence involves multiple stages, beginning with the ignition of PS1 and PSOM at liftoff, followed by the separation of various modules, and concluding with the deployment of the satellite.

According to the ISRO chief, the issue was detected in the third stage — a solid rocket motor that provides high thrust to propel the upper stage after the rocket exits the atmosphere. This stage delivers a maximum thrust of 240 kilonewtons.

EOS-09, an Earth Observation Satellite, was intended to be placed in a Sun-Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO). The mission plan included deploying the satellite using Orbit Change Thrusters (OCT) to lower the altitude of the PS4 stage, followed by passivation — a step taken to reduce the orbital lifespan of the stage and promote responsible space operations.

The EOS-09 satellite is designed to deliver continuous and reliable remote sensing data for various operational sectors. In line with ISRO’s commitment to sustainability, it is equipped with deorbiting fuel for safe disposal at the end of its mission.

Equipped with advanced C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, EOS-09 is capable of capturing high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface in all weather conditions, day or night. This enhances India’s capabilities in surveillance, resource management, and disaster response across multiple sectors.

  • Mexican Navy tall ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge, injuring 19

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

A Mexican Navy sailing ship festooned with lights and a giant flag crashed into the landmark Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, shearing the top of its masts and causing at least 19 injuries, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said.

Videos online showed the training vessel Cuauhtémoc as it approached the iconic bridge over the East River, close to the Manhattan side of the span, which connects the borough with Brooklyn. Its 147-foot (45-m) masts were too tall to clear the arched bridge at that point and toppled when the vessel sailed underneath.

Naval cadets dressed in white uniforms could be seen dangling from the ship’s crossbeams after the crash. Adams said there were 277 people aboard at the time.

“No one fell into the water; they were all hurt inside the ship,” a police official said.

The official said mechanical issues had probably caused the crash, without providing further details.

At one of the suspension bridge’s bases, located near New York City’s South Street Seaport, online video showed bystanders running in terror as the massive vessel hit the bridge and veered toward the dock.

The bridge, a popular tourist attraction and a main conduit between Manhattan and Brooklyn, was completed in 1883. It was once the largest suspension bridge in the world.

The bridge sustained no major damage, New York City transportation official said. Traffic reopened in both directions after a preliminary inspection.

Mexico’s foreign ministry said on social media that Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S. and other officials were assisting affected cadets and have been in contact with local authorities.

The training ship Cuauhtémoc was built at the Celaya Shipyards in Bilbao, Spain in 1981, according to the South Street Seaport Museum, which said on its website that it was co-hosting the vessel’s visit to New York that was scheduled to conclude on Saturday evening. The public was invited to come aboard the ship during its visit.

The ship was disembarking from New York and heading to Iceland, the New York police official said.

  • FDA approves Novavax COVID vaccine with new conditions

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine, but placed additional conditions on individuals who would be able to receive the vaccine.

According to the approval letter, the license restricts the use of the vaccine called Nuvaxovid to individuals aged 65 and older, and those between 12 and 64 who have at least one underlying condition that increases their risk of developing severe illness from COVID.

The letter did not specify what qualified as an underlying condition.

The FDA also deferred submission of pediatric studies from birth to less than 12 years for the application, as pediatric studies had not been completed.

Novavax CEO John Jacobs said the approval was a “significant milestone” that solidifies a path for people to access the vaccine.

The vaccine’s prospects were thrown into doubt after the FDA missed its April 1 target to approve the shot. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attributed the delay to the shot’s composition in a CBS interview earlier that month.

Novavax, whose protein-based shot uses an older technology, missed out on the pandemic vaccine windfall – enjoyed by rivals Moderna and Pfizer which make messenger RNA-based vaccines – due to manufacturing issues and regulatory hurdles.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art on Friday officially returned the Zidanku Silk Manuscript volumes II and III: Wuxing Ling and Gongshou Zhan from the Warring States period to China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration.

The handover ceremony took place at the Chinese Embassy in the United States in Washington, D.C.

The silk manuscripts were unearthed in 1942 from the Zidanku site in Changsha, Hunan Province, and were illegally taken to the United States in 1946. The silk manuscripts are currently the only known silk manuscripts from the Warring States period (475-221 BC).

The Zidanku Silk Manuscripts are divided into three volumes. The returning texts, Wuxing Ling and Gongshou Zhan, are the second and third volumes, respectively.

As the only known silk manuscripts from the Warring States period unearthed in China, the Zidanku Silk Manuscripts — over 2,000 years old — are the earliest silk text discovered to date, representing the earliest known example of a classical Chinese book in the true sense. It is of foundational significance for the study of ancient Chinese script and literature, as well as for the history of Chinese scholarship and thought.

The repatriation of Wuxing Ling and Gongshou Zhan “ensures that these invaluable artifacts can now be fully and rightfully protected and studied in the soil from which they came,” Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism Rao Quan, who is also the head of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, said in a video address.

This will allow for a more accurate and comprehensive understanding and interpretation of their heritage value, transforming them into shared academic and civilizational assets for China and the world, said Rao.

At the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng said that the return is a “cultural milestone” and a “testament” to China-U.S. cooperation in heritage preservation, bringing new vitality to people-to-people exchanges and friendship.

China and the United States have made “notable progress” in heritage cooperation, with around 600 artifacts sent back to China — including more than 40 pieces since the start of this year, according to the Chinese ambassador.

At the ceremony, Chase F. Robinson, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, said that the return of the manuscripts “reflects a carefully considered decision,” calling it an example of “mutually beneficial and collegial international collaboration.”

The return of Wuxing Ling and Gongshou Zhan marks a successful case of proactive recovery of significant lost cultural artifacts. It also serves as a model for the application of the core spirit of dialogue and cooperation outlined in the Qingdao Recommendations, showcasing how research into provenance and transfer history can support the successful repatriation of Chinese cultural artifacts lost overseas.

These manuscripts will be publicly displayed for the first time in July 2025 at the National Museum of China as part of an exhibition on the repatriation of cultural relics.

The National Cultural Heritage Administration said it will continue to work toward the early return of Sishi Ling, another volume of the Zidanku silk manuscripts.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Save the Children says Budget 2025 must commit to improving children’s wellbeing

    Source: Save the Children

Ahead of this week’s Budget announcement, Save the Children is calling on the Government to provide greater investment in children following a damning report showing New Zealand ranks among the lowest countries in the OECD for child wellbeing and mental health.

UNICEF’s global report card – released this week – shows New Zealand ranks 32nd out of 36 wealthy countries analysed for children’s wellbeing, while also highlighting New Zealand has the highest youth suicide rate among the 36 -nearly three times the average-and ranks last for child and youth mental health. It also shows that bullying remains a widespread issue, with New Zealand posting the second-highest rate of bullying among children.

Other reports from Save the Children’s own climate modelling showing the impact of climate change on children’s lives, alongside Government statistics, show children’s wellbeing, including their physical and mental health, basic needs including food security, housing and access to healthcare are under threat.

Additionally, a report released by the Auditor-General, revealed that child-informed budget decisions are critical if we are to avoid harming already vulnerable children and families due to cuts to funding of critical services.

“Government budget decisions have a direct impact on the lives and wellbeing of every New Zealander,” says Save the Children New Zealand’s Advocacy and Research Director Jacqui Southey.

“It’s clear that greater investment is needed to improve the wellbeing of our children. If New Zealand is to have a prosperous future, we need to invest to ensure our children live good lives now and have bright futures to look forward to.

“New Zealand ranking the worst in the world for youth suicides is devasting. Greater government investment in child health, wellbeing and the essentials they need to live good lives now is critical. We need to ensure that as a nation we are making funding decisions that improve the lives of our children and families.”

Ms Southey says investing in children also means investing in families to ensure they have liveable incomes, healthy and affordable housing, enough healthy food and access to quality healthcare and education for all ages. These are the foundations of a healthy thriving society.

“The grim reality for many New Zealand families living on the lowest incomes is that they are struggling to afford the very basics. The high cost of housing, food, and electricity, combined with growing unemployment particularly for youth, increased numbers of avoidable hospital admissions and rising child poverty levels are all worrying signs that life is very tough for thousands of New Zealand families, and it is those families who will struggle most in the event of a climate emergency.

“Targeted investment is needed in ensuring liveable incomes for all families, alongside a greater focus on climate emissions reduction and investing in climate resilient child-critical services.”

    About Save the Children NZ:

Save the Children works in 120 countries across the world. The organisation responds to emergencies and works with children and their communities to ensure they survive, learn and are protected.

Save the Children NZ currently supports international programmes in Fiji, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Laos, Nepal, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Areas of work include child protection, education and literacy, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, and alleviating child poverty.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: New HQ helps air cadet corps soar

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

Established more than half a century ago, the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (HKACC) has long been a foundation for the development of local aviation talent. Until recently, however, training was carried out at borrowed school and community centre facilities.

HKACC Commanding Officer Chan Mang-lang highlighted the challenges faced over the years. “Venue limitations restricted our ability to hold training activities according to our needs or introduce professional equipment like flight simulators.”

    Renovation project

To improve its training environment, in 2018 the corps began looking for a suitable location to establish a new headquarters and training centre. Ultimately, in 2023, it chose a vacant school on Shiu Fai Terrace in Wan Chai.

HKACC Deputy Officer Commanding Operations Group Martin Choi explained that the original school had 12 classrooms and an assembly hall, meaning the refit could be accomplished without major renovations, allowing for time and cost savings.

After over a year of refurbishments, the new headquarters officially opened in March. Classrooms were transformed into multi-purpose rooms, conference rooms and other facilities, providing cadets with ample training and learning areas. The corps also added several small flight simulators and a helicopter simulator.

“As Hong Kong integrates into the Greater Bay Area’s aerospace developments, the new headquarters equip the youth with cutting-edge facilities to explore aviation careers,” said Mr Choi. “These professional facilities could enhance the cadets’ technical skills. In future, we will also introduce one-to-one fixed-wing aircraft simulators for cadets.”

    Overcoming challenges

As a youth uniformed group, foot drill training is vital for the corps. The original playground has been converted into a parade ground for Chinese-style foot drills and a flag-raising training zone. During reconstruction, however, technical challenges arose when it came to installing flagpoles.

Due to the lack of road access, which prevented large machinery from entering the site, the contractor opted to use manual labour and small machines to lift and install three steel sections for the 15m main flagpole and the two 13m flagpoles on either side of it.

    Building pride

The new headquarters also features a national education corner aimed at strengthening young people’s national identity and pride through showcasing the country’s achievements and development.

HKACC No. 402 Squadron Non-commissioned Officer-in-charge Lui Wai-fung, who joined the corps five years ago, outlined that the new training centre offers numerous opportunities for training and growth, as well as increasing cadets’ sense of belonging.

    Vital support

From April 2024, the corps has been supported and funded by the Government Flying Service (GFS), which also assisted in establishing the new headquarters.

GFS Air Crewman Officer III Nicholas Choi stated that the service participated in site selection meetings led by the Security Bureau and the Development Bureau to ensure that the facilities at the new headquarters would meet  the corps’ future development needs. Having offered technical and professional advice to assist the corps in setting up its flight simulation equipment and teaching facilities, it also provides ongoing virtual reality and flight simulator training for cadets. In addition, it hosts cadets at GFS headquarters on enriching educational field trips.

    Bright prospects

GFS Acting Senior Pilot Martin Yu explained that on such visits, “when the cadets enter the hangar, they may actually have a quick touch on the helicopters, so they are usually very happy and become more interested in our daily job for GFS and aviation on the whole.”

Mr Yu also revealed that over 10% of current flight personnel in the GFS are former cadets, and said he hopes this percentage can rise even further in the future.

“Apart from that, many cadets has become a professional in aviation industry, including in many different streams, like the air traffic controllers, like in the maintenance industry, in the aviation, as well as a pilot.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: UK-EU Summit

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

    UK-EU Summit

This week, the Prime Minister will strike yet another deal that will deliver in the national interest of this country. It will be good for growth, good for jobs, good for bills, and good for our borders.

    • This week, the Prime Minister will strike yet another deal that will deliver in the national interest of this country. It will be good for growth, good for jobs, good for bills, and good for our borders.

    • In the last two weeks alone, the government has delivered trade deals with India and the United States. Jobs saved, faster growth, wages rising.

    • These deals are a huge vote of confidence in the United Kingdom. They show that, even though times have been tough, the decisions the government have taken to stabilise the economy and lead the way internationally have made this a country people want to do business with again.

    • Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will set out how a strengthened, forward-looking partnership with the European Union will deliver for working people and lead to more money in pockets as part of our Plan for Change – and sticking to the red lines set out in our manifesto.

    • Because the British public deserve better than the deal reached under the previous government, which isn’t working for anyone.

    • It will be better for UK producers – who face red tape and checks just to export to our nearest and biggest trading partner. Or sometimes can’t export at all.

    • It will be better for British supermarkets, who have to pass these costs onto consumers and reduce the availability of products on shelves.

    • And it will be better for British families who face higher bills, queues on holiday and whose safety and security is harmed by a lack of cooperation between neighbouring countries facing the same global challenges.

    • First India, then the US, now the European Union. This is what outward-looking, independent sovereign nations do – we look at the problems facing our country and we work hard, alongside our allies, to find solutions that deliver for our people.

    Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

“In this time of great uncertainty and volatility, the UK will not respond by turning inwards, but by proudly taking our place on the world stage – strengthening our alliances and closing deals in the interests of British people.

“First India, then the United States – in the last two weeks alone that’s jobs saved, faster growth and wages rising. More money in the pockets of British working people, achieved through striking deals not striking poses.

“Tomorrow, we take another step forwards, with yet more benefits for the United Kingdom as the result of a strengthened partnership with the European Union. It will be good for our jobs, good for our bills and good for our borders.

“That’s what the British people voted for last year, and it’s what my government will deliver.”

    Source: Government of Canada News

May 17, 2025 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The governments of Australia, Canada and New Zealand today issued the following statement after the APEC ministerial meetings on human resources development, education and trade:

“We express our unwavering support for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and are fully committed to helping Korea, as APEC Chair in 2025, deliver a successful host year.

“We are united in our resolve to ensure peace and stability in our region and to uphold international law, recognizing these are preconditions for the inclusive and sustainable economic growth for which we strive.

“We condemn Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, which is now in its fourth year. In addition to causing terrible damage and loss of life in Ukraine, Russia’s war is compounding human suffering and contributing to food and energy insecurity across the region and in the world economy.

“Russia’s actions and their economic impacts on the region are contrary to APEC’s vision for an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community for the peace and prosperity of all our people and of future generations.

“Furthermore, Russia’s actions undermine the stability and prosperity that are essential preconditions for advancing economic cooperation.

“APEC meetings provide an important opportunity to discuss these matters and their impacts on our economies.

“Reaffirming the importance of international rules, norms and standards, we call on Russia to end its illegal invasion and work constructively towards a just and lasting peace for the people of Ukraine.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: ‘Cracks are opening up’ in Western complicity over Gaza genocide, says Minto

    Asia Pacific Report

About 2000 New Zealand protesters marched through the heart of Auckland city today chanting “no justice, no peace” and many other calls as they demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the Israeli atrocities in its brutal war on the besieged Palestinian enclave.

For more than 73 days, Israel has blocked all food, water, and medicine from entering Gaza, creating a man-made crisis with the Strip on the brink of a devastating famine.

Israel’s attacks killed more than 150 and wounded 450 in a day in a new barrage of attacks that aid workers described as “Gaza is bleeding before our eyes”.

in Auckland, several Palestinian and other speakers spoke of the anguish and distress of the global Gaza community in the face of Western indifference to the suffering in a rally before the march marking the 77th anniversary of the Nakba — the “Palestinian catastrophe”.

“There are cracks opening up all around the world that haven’t been there for 77 years,” said Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) co-chair John Minto in an inspired speech to the protesters.

“Right through the news media, journalists are up in arms against their editors and bosses all around the world.

“We’ve got politicians in Britain speaking out for the first time. Some conservative politician got standing up the other day saying, ‘I supported Israel right or wrong for 20 years, and I was wrong.’

    ‘The world is coming right’
“Yet a lot of the world has been wrong for 77 years, but the world is coming right. We are on the right side of history, give us a big round of applause.”

Minto was highly critical of the public broadcasters, Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand, saying they relied too heavily on a narrow range of Western sources whose credibility had been challenged and eroded over the past 19 months.

PSNA co-chair John Minto . . . .capturing an image of the march up Auckland’s Queen Street in protest over the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Image: APR

He also condemned their “proximity” news value, blaming it for news editors’ lapse of judgment on news values because Israelis “spoke English”.

Minto told the crowd that that they should be monitoring Al Jazeera for a more balanced and nuanced coverage of the war on Palestine.

His comments echoed a similar theme of a speech at the Fickling Centre in Three Kings on Thursday night and protesters followed up by picketing the NZ Voyager Media Awards last night with a light show of killed Gazan journalists beamed on the hotel venue.

About 230 Gazan journalists have been killed in the war so far, many of them allegedly targeted by the Israeli forces.

Minto said he could not remember a previous time when a New Zealand government had remained silent in the face of industrial-scale killing of civilians anywhere in the world.

“We have livestreamed genocide happening and we have our government refusing to condemn any of Israel’s war crimes,” he said.

NZ ‘refusing to condemn war crimes’
“Yet we’ve got everybody in the leadership of this government having condemned every act of Palestinian resistance yet refused to condemn the war crimes, refused to condemn the bombing of civilians, and refused to condemn the mass starvation of 2.3 million people.

“What a bunch of depraved bastards run this country. Shame on all of them.”

Palestinian speaker Samer Almalalha spoke of the 1948 Nakba and the injustices against his people.

“Everything we were told about international law and human rights is bullshit. The only rights you have are the ones you take,” he said.

“So today we won’t stand here to plead, we are here to remind you of what happened to us. We are here to take what is ours. Today, and every day, we fight for a free Palestine.”

and he told a harrowing story from his homeland. As a 14-year-old boy, he and his family were driven out of Palestine during the Nakba.

He described “waking up to to the smell of gunpowder” — his home was close to the Deir Yassin massacre on April 9, 1948, when Zionist militias attacked the village killing 107 people, including women and children.

‘Palestine will be free – and so will we’
Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick said: “What we stand for is truth, justice, peace and love.

“Palestine will be free and, in turn, so will we.”

She said only six more MPs were needed to have the numbers to have the Greens’ Unlawful Occupation of Palestine Sanctions Bill passed in Parliament.

Israel has blocked all food, water, and medicine from entering Gaza, creating a man-made crisis, with the integrated food security agency IPC warning that famine could be declared any time between now and September, reports Al Jazeera.

The head of the UN Children’s Fund, Catherine Russell, said the world should be shocked by the killing of 45 children in Israeli air strikes in just two days.

Instead, the slaughter of children in Gaza is “largely met with indifference”.

“More than 1 million children in Gaza are at risk of starvation. They are deprived of food, water and medicine,” Russell wrote in a post on social media.

“Nowhere is safe for children in Gaza,” she said.

    “This horror must stop.”

    Famine worst level of hunger
Famine is the worst level of hunger, where people face severe food shortages, widespread malnutrition, and high levels of death due to starvation.

According to the UN’s criteria, famine is declared when:

    • At least 20 percent (one-fifth) of households face extreme food shortages;
    • More than 30 percent of children suffer from acute malnutrition; and
    • At least two out of every 10,000 people or four out of every 10,000 children die each day from starvation or hunger-related causes.

Famine is not just about hunger; it is the worst humanitarian emergency, indicating a complete collapse of access to food, water and the systems necessary for survival.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), since Israel’s complete blockade began on March 2, at least 57 children have died from the effects of malnutrition.

  • MIL-OSI: 100x Leverage. No KYC. Double Deposit Bonus. Crypto Futures Trading Made Easy on BexBack

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SINGAPORE, May 17, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As Bitcoin prices soar past the historic $100,000 mark and global tariff tensions ease, market sentiment has turned decisively bullish. Analysts now predict a period of heightened volatility, where massive price swings are expected. Holding spot positions may struggle to generate short-term profits in such conditions. As a result, 100x leverage futures trading has become the preferred tool for seasoned investors looking to maximize potential gains in this volatile market.

BexBack Exchange is ramping up its efforts to offer traders unmatched promotional packages. The platform now features a 100% deposit bonus, a $50 welcome bonus for new users, 100x leverage on cryptocurrency trading, and no KYC requirements, providing exceptional opportunities for investors to trade freely, efficiently, and anonymously.

Advantages of 100x Leverage Crypto Futures

    1. Amplified Profits: Control large positions with a small amount of capital, capturing more profits from market fluctuations.
    2. Low Capital Requirement: Participate in high-value trades with minimal investment, lowering the entry barrier.
    3. Increased Market Opportunities: Profit quickly from price fluctuations, especially in volatile markets.
    4. High Capital Efficiency: Leverage enables better use of your capital, expanding your investment potential.
    5. Profit from Both Up and Down Markets: Adapt to any market conditions, with opportunities to profit whether the market goes up or down.

What Is 100x Leverage and How Does It Work?

Simply put, 100x leverage allows you to open larger trading positions with less capital. For example:

Suppose the Bitcoin price is $100,000 that day, and you open a long contract with 1 BTC. After using 100x leverage, the transaction amount is equivalent to 100 BTC.

One day later, if the price rises to $105,000, your profit will be (105,000 – 100,000) * 100 BTC / 100,000 = 5 BTC, a yield of up to 500%.

    With BexBack’s deposit bonus

BexBack offers a 100% deposit bonus. If the initial investment is 2 BTC, the profit will increase to 10 BTC, and the return on investment will double to 1000%.

Note: Although leveraged trading can magnify profits, you also need to be wary of liquidation risks.

How Does the 100% Deposit Bonus Work?

The deposit bonus from BexBack cannot be directly withdrawn but can be used to open larger positions and increase potential profits. Additionally, during significant market fluctuations, the bonus can serve as extra margin, effectively reducing the risk of liquidation.

    About BexBack?

BexBack is a leading cryptocurrency derivatives platform offering up to 100x leverage on futures contracts for BTC, ETH, ADA, SOL, XRP, and over 50 other digital assets. Headquartered in Singapore, the platform also operates offices in Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Govt condemns US senators’ bill

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today strongly condemned US senators who requested a review, through a so-called bill, that includes a number of judges and the Department of Justice’s prosecutors in a so-called list of sanctions, in an attempt to intimidate Hong Kong SAR personnel who safeguard national security.

In a press statement, the Hong Kong SAR Government made it clear that safeguarding national security falls within the internal affairs of a sovereign jurisdiction, and the implementation of the National Security Law is free from any intervention.

It further pointed out that the US politicians, however, insisted on turning a blind eye to facts and even clamoured for so-called sanctions against the Hong Kong SAR personnel and judges who dutifully safeguard national security.

Stressing that it despises any so-called sanctions and shall never be intimidated, the Hong Kong SAR Government said the city shall continue to resolutely discharge the responsibility of safeguarding national security. It also strongly urged the US politicians concerned to discern facts from fallacies, stop acting against the international law and basic norms of international relations, and stop interfering in Hong Kong matters, which are purely China’s internal affairs.

Separately, the Hong Kong SAR Government said its law enforcement agencies have been taking enforcement actions based on evidence and strictly in accordance with the law in respect of the acts of the people or entities concerned, which have nothing to do with their political stance, background or occupation.

It also emphasised that the Department of Justice is in charge of criminal prosecutions of the Hong Kong SAR makes all its prosecutorial decisions on an objective analysis of all admissible evidence and applicable laws.

Furthermore, the Hong Kong SAR Government noted that the Judiciary exercises judicial power independently in accordance with the law, and everyone charged with a criminal offence has the right to a fair hearing.

It explained that the courts decide cases strictly in accordance with the evidence and all applicable laws, and cases will never be handled any differently owing to the professions, political beliefs or backgrounds of the persons involved. Additionally, the prosecution has the burden to prove beyond reasonable doubt the commission of an offence before a defendant may be convicted by the court.

The Hong Kong SAR Government stressed that any attempt to interfere with Hong Kong’s judicial proceedings by means of political power is a reprehensible act undermining the city’s rule of law. Making any statement with the intent to interfere with or obstruct the course of justice, or engaging in conduct with the same intent, is very likely to constitute the offence of criminal contempt of court or the offence of perverting the course of justice.

Furthermore, it elucidated that it will, as always, resolutely, fully and faithfully implement the National Security Law, the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance and other relevant laws safeguarding national security in the Hong Kong SAR, to effectively prevent, suppress and impose punishment for acts and activities endangering national security in accordance with the law.

The Hong Kong SAR Government added that it will uphold the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people in accordance with the law, so as to ensure the steadfast and successful implementation of “one country, two systems”.

Following the 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial (UNPKM) meeting in Berlin, Germany, Canada committed to providing more than $40 million in new projects and contributions to continue supporting UN peace operations and related peacebuilding efforts.

These commitments include a pledge to continue providing tactical airlift support to UN peace operations until 2027. Canada will also continue to support the protection of civilians (including women and children) and providing specialized training and to counter the threat of misinformation, disinformation, malinformation and hate speech in the context of UN peace operations. As a historic partner in supporting UN peace operations, Canada remains committed to advancing the meaningful participation of uniformed women in peace operations and to supporting critical UN capacity gaps.

Peacekeeping training, capacity building and partnerships

    Canada’s pledging commitments include:

Canada will increasingly share peacekeeping capacity-building activities with like-minded partners and, where appropriate, through the UN Light Coordination Mechanism, to increase opportunities for effective international collaboration and achieve greater impact.

Through the Canadian Police Arrangement, the RCMP will:

    • augment training and capacity-building partnerships, including through the deployment of subject-matter experts to 3 peacekeeping regional training centres
    • support pre-deployment training for individual women police officers from contributing nations to help them meet UN requirements and increase the number of women police officers in UN missions

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

This week’s top stories of the week include:

0:15 Can VR help calm surgery patients? — Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota gave patients a set of virtual reality (VR) goggles and offered them a 10-minute ‘nature experience’. The clinic ran a trial on 100 patients, giving 50 a tablet and 50 a headset. Self-reported anxiety scores fell with both but more with the VR headset.

3:34 NY makes composting compulsory — Since 1 April, New Yorkers have had to separate food waste for recycling or face a fine of up to $300. It’s part of the city’s efforts to tackle climate change. The food waste is either composted and turned into fertilizer or emptied into a ‘biodigester’ where it emits biogas that’s used to generate renewable energy.

3:34 This robot finds people in rubble — It has an inflatable tube which can flex around corners and squeeze through narrow passages. An operator controls the tube with a joystick it has a camera and sensors at its tip, which help draw a 3D map of ‘void spaces’ and plot an entry route for emergency teams.

5:16 Space scanner maps remote forests — The world’s forests are a vital carbon sink but deforestation and degradation are eroding their storage capacity. The 1.25-tonne Biomass probe was built by Airbus and will orbit 666 km above the planet for several years, measuring and tracking changes in forests across Asia, Africa and South America.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Fiji rights coalition slams ‘betrayal’ of West Papua for Indonesian benefits

    By Anish Chand in Suva

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Fiji’s coalition government are “detached from the values that Fijians hold dear”, says the NGO Coalition on Human Rights in Fiji (NGOCHR).

The rights coalition has expressed deep concern over Rabuka’s ongoing engagements with Indonesia.

“History will judge how we respond as Fijians to this moment. We must not stay silent when Pacific people are being occupied and killed,” said NGOCHR chair Shamima Ali.

She said Rabuka was extended a grant of $12 million by Indonesia recently and received proposals for joint military training.

“Is Fiji’s continuing silence on West Papua yet another example of being muzzled by purse strings?”

“As members of the Melanesian and Pacific family, bound by shared ancestry and identity, the acceptance of financial and any other benefit from Indonesia—while remaining silent on the plight of West Papua—is a betrayal of our family member and of regional solidarity.”

“True leadership must be rooted in solidarity, justice, and accountability,” Ali said.

“It is imperative that Pacific leaders not only advocate for peace and cooperation in the region but also continue to hold Indonesia to account on ongoing human rights violations in West Papua.”

  • After Operation Sindoor, world no longer asks for proof: Vice-President

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday called for a collective rethink on economic nationalism, urging citizens to refrain from supporting countries that act against India’s interests during times of crisis. Speaking at the annual convocation of Jaipuria Institute of Management at Bharat Mandapam, the Vice-President said the time has come to prioritise national interests in all spheres, including trade and travel.

“Can we afford to empower countries that are inimical to our interests?” he asked. “We no longer can afford, by travel or import, to improve the economies of those countries because of our participation. And those countries, in times of crisis, are positioned against us.”

Stressing the role of every citizen in national security, he said that industries, businesses, and educational institutions must work in tandem with the national vision. “Nation first—everything has to be reckoned on the fulcrum of deep commitment to nationalism,” he said, adding that such a mindset should be instilled from early childhood.

Lauding the ongoing Operation Sindoor, he paid tribute to the Indian Armed Forces and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, which he termed the deadliest since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Dhankhar said the operation was a decisive and dignified response.

“It was a remarkable retaliation befitting our ethos of peace and tranquility. The message from Bihar’s heartland has reached the world—and the world has acknowledged it. No one is asking for proof now,” he said.

The Vice-President also disclosed that Indian forces targeted terror bases across the border in Bahawalpur and Muridke, the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, respectively. He described the strike as India’s deepest-ever cross-border counterterror operation.

He drew parallels with the United States’ 2011 operation against Osama bin Laden, suggesting that India’s response similarly signaled a strong message to the global community.

Reflecting on India’s civilisational values, he said the country stands apart for its 5,000-year-old ethos and called for bridging gaps between Eastern and Western perspectives. He cautioned against anti-national narratives and advocated careful scrutiny of foreign universities operating in India.

Dhankhar expressed concern over the growing commodification of education and healthcare, stressing that these sectors should not become avenues for profit but serve as means of giving back to society. “This country cannot afford the commercialisation of education,” he said.

Calling upon the corporate sector, the Vice-President urged industry leaders to prioritise funding for research and innovation through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. “Investment in research is fundamental,” he said.

Dhankhar underlined the need for self-reliance in technology. “Gone are the days when we could wait for others to develop technology. If we do that, we are handicapped right from the beginning.”

KUNMING, May 17 (Xinhua) — Russian businesswoman Ekaterina Savelyeva recently signed a contract to supply 240,000 carnations to Russia at the Deruyer flower base in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province.

“Yunnan flowers are popular in the Russian market due to their excellent quality and rich variety of varieties,” said E. Savelyeva. During her nearly month-long stay in Yunnan Province, she systematically familiarized herself with more than 100 varieties of flowers, which laid the foundation for long-term cooperation in the future.

Yunnan Province, a major flower supplier in southwest China, is experiencing a boom in flower exports. In the first four months of this year, the province’s total export value of fresh-cut flowers reached 360 million yuan (about $50.04 million), up 51.4 percent year on year, according to Kunming Customs data.

Among them, Dounan Flower Market, located in Chenggong District, Kunming, is the largest fresh-cut flower market in Asia and the second largest in the world. Flowers from this bustling market are shipped to more than 50 countries and regions around the world, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Australia, Singapore, etc.

Since 2024, Russia and Kazakhstan’s demand for China’s fresh cut flowers has continued to grow. Zhou Tianyi, a representative of the aforementioned base, said that in addition to the Russian market, 60,000 fresh cut flowers are currently sent to Kazakhstan every week, and demand in the Central Asian market is also increasing significantly.

In order to facilitate the export of flowers from Yunnan Province, Kunming Customs has been continuously optimizing its services, improving the efficiency of customs clearance and reducing customs costs for enterprises. -0-

  • Foreign investors return strongly, pump ₹8,831 crore into Indian markets

    Source: Government of India (4)

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) continued their buying spree in Indian equities for the third consecutive session on Friday, investing ₹8,831.1 crore — the highest single-day inflow since March 27, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) released on Saturday.

The strong inflow reflects rising foreign investor confidence in Indian markets, especially amid broader global uncertainties.

On Thursday, FPIs had purchased shares worth ₹5,746.5 crore, taking the total net inflow so far in May to ₹18,620 crore. This marks a sharp improvement from April, when overseas investors had bought equities worth ₹4,223 crore, according to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).

Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also turned net buyers on Friday after a brief pause, investing ₹5,187.1 crore in equities.

Despite the robust foreign inflows, benchmark indices ended lower on Friday due to profit booking in large-cap stocks. The Nifty declined 42.30 points, or 0.17%, to close at 25,019.80, while the Sensex fell 200.15 points, or 0.24%, to settle at 82,330.59.

During the intraday session, the Nifty had slipped as much as 0.44% to 24,953.05, and the Sensex had dropped 0.47% to 82,146.95.

However, for the week ended May 16, both indices posted strong gains — with the Nifty rising 4.21% and the Sensex climbing 3.62% — marking their best weekly performance since October 2024.

“Nifty continues to trade above its short-term moving averages, maintaining a bullish trend. The next resistance is seen at 25,207, while support is placed around 24,800,” said Nandish Shah, Senior Derivatives and Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities.

FPI participation in Indian equities has seen a notable turnaround in May after a sluggish start to 2025. In the first three months of the year, foreign investors were net sellers — offloading equities worth ₹78,027 crore in January, ₹34,574 crore in February, and ₹3,973 crore in March.

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang and Commissioner for Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Maisie Chan visited Hungary to promote development opportunities of the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

After arriving in Budapest yesterday, Mr Tsang called on Chinese Ambassador to Hungary Gong Tao.

Today, he met State Secretary for Bilateral Relations at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade Boglárka Illés, and Hungarian National Assembly Deputy Speaker Lajos Oláh to share views on issues relating to the promotion of exchange and collaboration between Hong Kong and Hungary.

Mr Tsang also attended the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – Europe (Hungary) Economic & Trade Cooperation Exchange Conference” jointly organised by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Macao Special Administrative Region Government to promote business opportunities brought about by the GBA to the European business community, and Hong Kong’s position as a GBA international entry point and roles as a “super connector” and “super value-adder”.

Speaking at the conference, he encouraged enterprises and talent to capitalise on Hong Kong’s unique advantages of having the staunch support of China and being closely connected to the world by establishing a foothold in the city and tapping into the huge market of the GBA, and to turn challenges into opportunities under the current international situation.

Under “one country, two systems”, Hong Kong would maintain its status as a free port, implement a free trade policy, maintain the free flow of capital, goods, people and information, and firmly support a rules-based multilateral trading system, he emphasised.

Mr Tsang will depart for Cairo, Egypt, tomorrow to attend the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – Africa (Egypt) Economic & Trade Cooperation Exchange Conference”.
