Global recognition of Yoga stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and is a matter of immense national pride: Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Ayush Minister

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 6:38PM by PIB Delhi

The holy city of Nashik, renowned for its spiritual heritage and as the site of the revered Mahakumbh, is all set to host a grand celebration—Yoga Mahotsav 2025— on 2nd May to mark the 50-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY). The event is being organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), under the aegis of the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.

The Mahotsav will begin with a mass demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM on May 2, 2025, at Gauri Maidan, Ramkund Parisar, Panchavati, in the gracious presence of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav along with several dignitaries, Yoga practitioners, and citizens from all walks of life.

As Nashik prepares for the upcoming Mahakumbh 2027, hosting this milestone event imbues the countdown to IDY 2025 with spiritual resonance, echoing the energy of a city where wellness, tradition, and sacredness converge.

Since the United Nations adopted June 21st as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, at the behest of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has led a global movement promoting the timeless wisdom of Yoga. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Ayush has successfully coordinated ten editions of IDY, engaging millions of people worldwide and showcasing Yoga as a powerful tool for unity, health, and harmony.

Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, urged the citizens of Nasik to participate in the event and said, that “Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s initiative led to the United Nations declaring June 21st as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. This global recognition of Yoga stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and is a matter of immense national pride. IDY symbolizes global unity, wellness, and harmony, with annual Mass Yoga Demonstrations led by the Prime Minister. With the same spirit and enthusiasm, preparations for IDY 2025 are already in full swing.”

The Ministry of Ayush invites every citizen to be a part of this transformative celebration. As the countdown to June 21, 2025 progresses, the message is clear: Yoga is not just a practice—it is a movement for national health, inner peace, and global well-being.

To mark the importance of 11th edition of IDY 2025, and the rich legacy of previous 10 editions of International Day of Yoga the Ministry of Ayush has curated ten Signature Events, each designed to reach diverse sections of society and promote Yoga as a way of life.

Olympians Satwik-Chirag receive Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award from Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya

Union Minister Lauds Indian Pair’s Achievement; Says Standing on the Podium with the Tricolour is a Proud Moment for the Nation

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 6:01PM by PIB Delhi

Olympians Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award from Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi today. The ace badminton pair, who reached the No. 1 rank in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in 2023 and clinched the Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou, were shortlisted for the Khel Ratna award in 2023. However, they were unable to receive it due to tournament commitments at the time.

Praising the current World No. 11 duo, the Dr. Mandaviya said: “Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour of the country. Satwik and Chirag, both of you, have brought honour to the country by winning medals in international competitions through extraordinary skills and sheer hard work. When you stand on the podium along with the Tricolour to receive the prestigious medals, it not only an honour for you but for the entire nation. For raising the pride of the country and for enhancing the honour of the Tricolour, both of you have been honoured by the Khel Ratna.”

Expressing his joy on receiving the Khel Ratna, Chirag Shetty said that the honour was long due. “Finally, we received it today. It was long due. It was announced in 2023. So, we are very happy to get the Khel Ratna from our honourable Sports Minister. The support from the Government of India has been tremendous since the time me and Satwik were paired together. All our big wins – whether becoming the World No. 1, winning Asian Games gold or clinching the Thomas Cup title – a lot of credit goes to the Indian government for their continuous support.”

Echoing the sentiments, Satwik said: “We couldn’t go to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive the Khel Ratna award last year. Finally, to get it now is a huge boost for our confidence as we are going off-track and not playing for the next few months. It motivates us to get back and do well in the upcoming tournaments. The government is playing a huge role as the youngsters today are being supported through a lot many schemes and initiatives – Khelo India, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) etc. Intially, when I and Chirag started playing we struggled financially. Later, government came to our support and there was no looking back.”

The Indian pair finished on the podium twice – at the Malaysia Open and India Open in New Delhi – this January to begin their season on a decent note. However, niggles and minor injuries have pegged them back. Their next assignment is the Singapore Open (May 27 – June 1) and Indonesia Open (June 3-8).

WAVES 2025 pays stirring Tributes to the Legend of Bollywood Cinema Manoj Kumar

WAVES Breakout Session: “Remembering Manoj Kumar: Ace Filmmaker, True Nationalist” Concludes with Emotion, Insight, and Cinematic Legacy

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 5:47PM by PIB Mumbai

    Mumbai, 1 May 2025

The cinematic waves at WAVES 2025 reached a heartfelt crescendo as the session “Remembering Manoj Kumar: Ace Filmmaker, True Nationalist” paid tribute to one of Indian cinema’s most iconic and patriotic voices. Moderated by noted film critic and podcaster Mayank Shekhar, the session brought together leading voices from the film and literary worlds to reflect on the legacy of the legendary actor, writer, and filmmaker.

Born Harikishan Giri Goswami in 1937, Manoj Kumar’s life was as dramatic and inspiring as his films. Uprooted by partition, he came to Bombay with dreams but no film connections. A self-made storyteller who initially wrote scripts in Urdu, Kumar crafted a distinct cinematic voice — blending mainstream appeal with a deep sense of nationalism and social conscience.

Kunal Goswami, actor and son of Manoj Kumar, opened the session with intimate memories: “My father lost everything during Partition, but never lost his vision. From living in refugee camps to scripting iconic stories in Urdu, his journey is a testimony of resilience. He brought Bhagat Singh’s mother to the premiere of ‘Shaheed’— that’s how personal his patriotism was. He created blockbusters that were also deeply nationalistic — a rare feat.”

Madhur Bhandarkar, National Award-winning director of acclaimed movies such as Page 3, Chandni bar and Fashion remembered in awe Manoj Kumar’s cinematic techniques remarking that the way he shot songs was incredible. Bhandarkar added that Manoj Kumar’s films were layered with nationalism and social realism, something he has tried to echo in his own work. “Chandni Bar was in many ways a subconscious tribute to Manoj Kumar’s ethos.” said Bhandarkar.

Dr. Raajeev Shrivastav, senior author and lyricist, shared an awe-inspiring tale:

“At the screening of ‘Shaheed’ in Delhi attended by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Prime minister asked Manoj Kumar to create a movie based on his slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.’ Inspired by this, Manoj Kumar wrote the story for Upkaar on the overnight train journey back to Mumbai. Manoj Kumar’s life was a cinematic mission to speak to the common man. In this way his spirit mirrors the essence of WAVES itself.”

Bharti S. Pradhan, veteran columnist and biographer, offered a poignant reflection:

“Despite his massive success, he was incredibly approachable.  Even while unwell, he was dreaming of his next film. That was his spirit — always looking forward.”

    A Legacy That Lives On

Known affectionately as Bharat Kumar, Manoj Kumar was the recipient of numerous accolades including the Padma Shri and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. His films — Shaheed, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Upkaar, Kranti — were not just cinematic landmarks but cultural milestones. The session concluded with thumping applause from the audience and a collective sense of gratitude for a man who made patriotism poetic, and storytelling sublime.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: DoSJE-UNDP Agreement signed to enable Improved Access to Finance and Relevant Technologies, along with Safe and Sustainable Work Environment

    Source: Government of India

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 5:13PM by PIB Delhi

On the occasion of Labour Day 2025, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) has taken a landmark step by signing a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with UNDP, for recognizing and strengthening the wastepickers’ contribution in waste collection, recovery and recycling. The initiative would be providing them improved access to finance and relevant technologies along with safe and sustainable work environment.

The LoA was exchanged between Dr. Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India and Shri Amit Yadav, Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE). Smt. Yogita Swaroop, Sr. Economic Advisor, DoSJE, and Shri P.K. Singh, Managing Director, National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC), were also present at the LoA signing ceremony.

The UNDP has stepped forward to provide crucial financial support for the establishment of State Project Management Units (PMUs) across various States under the NAMASTE Scheme. This strategic intervention by UNDP will significantly streamline coordination between Central authorities and State governments, ensuring more effective and timely implementation of the scheme’s objectives thereby improving  outcomes for all stakeholders involved in the scheme.

Wastepickers have been added as a component under the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme from the financial year 2024. NAMASTE is being implemented by MoSJE for broadening the formal inclusion of waste pickers across India, with an aim to enumerate 2,50,000 waste pickers nationwide.

The NAMASTE Scheme’s wastepicker component aims to enumerate and recognize them through a nationwide digital profiling and registration drive. The focus is to provide occupational photo ID cards to ensure formal identity and access to government benefits. It aims to offer health insurance coverage under Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY, skill upgradation training, provision of PPE kits, and capital subsidies for waste collection vehicles. It will also facilitate the formation and strengthening of wastepicker collectives, enabling them to manage Decentralized Waste Collection Centers (DWCCs) and improve their livelihoods.

Since the scheme’s rollout, over 5,000 wastepickers have been profiled across multiple States, marking a significant milestone in the formal recognition and integration of this workforce. The profiling is being carried out using a dedicated NAMASTE mobile application, ensuring a robust and accessible database for extending scheme benefits.

    — Vice-President of India (@VPIndia) May 1, 2025

“A little while ago, I was told, ‘You won’t get [the book] for free either.’ Your Excellency Governor Anandiben Patel, I don’t have the habit of taking anything for free… The most dangerous challenge is the one that comes from within, which we cannot discuss… the challenge that comes from our own people, which has no logical basis, which has no connection with national development, which is related to governance. Not just you, I too am a victim of these challenges, Your Excellency Governor. I myself am a victim, a sufferer of these challenges. But we have a great strength before us, and our strength is our philosophy, which tells us that whenever a crisis arises, look towards the Vedas, look towards the Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata – ‘You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.’ Whenever challenges come, they will come. Challenges will come such that you feel helpless and think that even walls have ears. So you don’t discuss that challenge even with yourself, but you must never deviate from the path of duty,” he further said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the book launch event of ‘I Like Challenges’ by Honourable Governor Smt. Anandiben Patel in Lucknow today, he said, “People often say that public memory is short and think that over time, everything will be forgotten. But that’s not the case. Have we forgotten the Emergency? Much time has passed, but the dark shadow of the Emergency is still visible to us today. It was the darkest period in Indian history when people were imprisoned without reason, access to the judiciary was obstructed. Fundamental rights disappeared, millions of people were thrown into jails. We haven’t forgotten this. Similarly, regarding the painful incident that happened recently, I believe — and it is my firm conviction — that we must accept that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. In a democracy, innocence has a special significance. But whatever the crime may be, it must be resolved according to the law. And if a crime shakes the public conscience, it cannot be covered up. I have stated this with complete clarity. Some people asked me why I am so outspoken on this issue. I got a lot of inspiration from Her Excellency the Governor’s book. And I have made it clear that I like challenges, and fulfilling constitutional obligations is our primary responsibility. No negligence in this regard can be accepted.”

Expressing deep concern over comments made about constitutional positions, Shri Dhankhar said, “In our Constitution, two positions are considered supreme — one is the President of India, and the other is the Governor. And honourable Chief Minister, they are supreme because the oath you have taken, the oath I have taken, the oath that MPs, ministers, legislators, or any judge has taken — that oath is: I will uphold the Constitution. But Draupadi Murmu ji’s (President) and Anandiben Patel ji’s (Governor) oath is different from this. Their oath is: ‘I will protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution.’ And the second oath is: ‘I will serve the people’ — for the President, it’s the people of India, and for the Governor, it’s the people of the respective state. If comments are made on such dignified and constitutional positions, then according to me, it is a matter that deserves serious reflection.”

पहलगाम एक चुनौती प्रस्तुत करता है। When we have a चुनौती like Pahalgam, the nation has to rise as one. It is an occasion for us to take a resolve: national interest is beyond compromise, nation first has to be our principle.

    — Vice-President of India (@VPIndia) May 1, 2025

Highlighting the importance of coordination and dialogue between all institutions created by the Constitution, the Vice-President emphasized, “In the last few days, an event has occurred, on which I have also issued a statement, and it is also connected to your state. I want to remind you that the biggest confrontation between the Legislature and the Judiciary happened in this very state. You are all well familiar with this subject. It is our paramount duty to ensure that our constitutional institutions respect each other, and this respect increases when each institution works within its own boundaries. When Institutions respect each other… our Constitution does not expect confrontation, but rather coordination, cooperation, dialogue, deliberation, and healthy debate. The Constitution does not envision conflict between institutions; it promotes a spirit of participation and balance.”

In the same context, he further said, “All Institutions have their own roles. One should not play the role of another. We should respect the Constitution — literally, in spirit, and in essence, and I have said before, 140 crore people express their sentiments through elections, through their representatives, and those representatives reflect the public mind, and the public holds them accountable in elections. And that’s why I have said in common man’s language that just as the legislature cannot script a judgment, that is the court’s job — similarly, the court cannot make laws.”

“I have the utmost respect for the judiciary; I have been a soldier of the judiciary. I spent more than four decades as a lawyer. Only in 2019, when I was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal, did I leave the practice of law. I know that there are extremely talented people in the judiciary. The judiciary is of great importance. How strong our democratic system is — is defined by the status of the judiciary. By global standards, our judges are among the best. But I appeal that we should show a spirit of cooperation, coordination, and participation. The executive, judiciary, and legislature — these institutions should work together and in harmony.”, he added.

In our Constitution, two positions are supreme- One is of the President of India, another is of the Governor.

I will abide by… pic.twitter.com/5ElPdJr2l1

    — Vice-President of India (@VPIndia) May 1, 2025

Emphasizing the importance of expression and debate in democracy, Shri Dhankhar said, “A very important point has been made, which is extremely necessary for all of us. Why do we call ourselves a democracy? Economic progress, development of institutional framework, expansion of technology — all these are important. But the real definition of democracy is — expression and debate. Expression and dialogue are the foundations of democracy. If there are restrictions on expression, it will be difficult for any nation to call itself democratic. But expression has no meaning if there is no debate with it. If expression reaches such an extent that the speaker thinks ‘I am the only one who is right’ and in all other circumstances, others are wrong, and there is no attempt to listen to them — then this is not the right to expression, but rather its distortion. Democracy is defined only when expression and dialogue flourish together in a comprehensive ecosystem. These two complement each other. And if expression reaches an extreme but there is no dialogue, then the philosophy of our Vedas — pluralism, will end. And in its place will be born ‘ego and arrogance.’ This ‘ego and arrogance’ are fatal for both individuals and institutions.”

On this occasion, the Vice-President’s spouse Smt. Sudesh Dhankhar, Honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh Smt. Anandiben Patel, Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath, Cabinet Minister Shri Suresh Khanna, and other dignitaries were also present.

Culture, a powerful lens through which brands can understand their audiences, personalize their offerings, and spark meaningful connections: Prem Narayan, Ogilvy at WAVES 2025

Culture as a Fuel for Brand Building – Insights from Masterclass by Prem Narayan, Ogilvy at WAVES 2025

Posted On: 01 MAY 2025 6:02PM by PIB Mumbai

    Mumbai, 1 May 2025

On the opening day of WAVES 2025, a compelling masterclass on brand-building delivered by Shri Prem Narayan, Chief Strategy Officer, Ogilvy, offered deep insights into how culture can be harnessed to build brands that resonate with the Indian consumer.

In his session titled “Culture as a Fuel to Build Brands”, Shri Narayan underscored the pivotal role of cultural relevance in shaping brand narratives and influencing consumer behavior. He showcased how advertising in India has evolved by rooting itself in cultural traditions, and how brands that align with cultural values are more likely to earn enduring consumer loyalty.

Citing Cadbury’s advertising journey as a case in point, Shri Narayan explained how the brand successfully embedded itself into the Indian tradition of ‘meetha’ (sweets) by positioning chocolate as a modern expression of this deeply ingrained ritual. This cultural alignment helped the brand create a unique and lasting space in Indian households, redefining celebrations and everyday moments.

The session also highlighted other campaigns that have effectively drawn on cultural insights to deliver brand benefits. Examples included CEAT’s safety messaging and Fevicol’s humorous yet culturally attuned storytelling—both of which have elevated brand recall and emotional connection.

Shri Narayan emphasized that building “brand love” goes beyond product features—it requires embedding the brand into the cultural fabric. The simple idea of tea as a symbol of Indian hospitality, for instance, has been creatively leveraged by various brands to emphasize togetherness and familiarity, making the brand experience more relatable and heartfelt. He also stressed the importance of tailoring communication to regional sensibilities. With India’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, regional customization in branding is not just effective—it is essential.

The masterclass shed light on how the convergence of cultural occasions and digital technologies opens new avenues for business growth. The “My Ad” campaign by Cadbury, featuring Shahrukh Khan, was presented as a model for hyper-personalized advertising that uses digital tools to reach audiences at a granular level, while still speaking to shared cultural moments.

Digital and social platforms, Shri Naryanan noted, are rich with cultural cues that can be mined for more contextual and resonant storytelling. He pointed to the Eye Test Menu campaign for truckers, which not only personalized the messaging for a specific audience but also created tangible social impact—benefiting over 42,000 truckers so far.

Concluding the session, Narayan asserted that culture remains a powerful lens through which brands can understand their audiences, personalize their offerings, and spark meaningful connections. The session offered a roadmap for brands seeking to not only grow in India but grow with India—by speaking the language of its people, their traditions, and their aspirations.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Wisconsin Tammy Baldwin

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced a Senate resolution honoring April 4, 2025, as International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action and recognizing April 30, 2025, as the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

“The Vietnam War left a lasting mark across Southeast Asia, and it’s our responsibility to continue working hand and hand with our allies to protect civilians from the legacy of this conflict,” said Senator Baldwin. “50 years after Americans withdrew from Vietnam, unexploded mines still kill and injure men, women, and children who had no part in this fight every year. I’m proud to recognize this anniversary and International Day of Mine Awareness to remember this critical work to protect innocent civilians continues well beyond the end date of the Vietnam War.”

In 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared that April 4 of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnam captured Saigon, effectively ending the civil war. Vietnam remains one of the world’s most impacted countries with respect to uncleared mines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO). Since the war ended, 40,000 people have been killed by UXO and 60,000 injured. At least 25,000 people have been killed or injured by explosives in Laos, and at least 65,000 people in Cambodia since 1979.

Senator Baldwin leads the bipartisan Legacies of War Recognition and Unexploded Ordnance Removal Act to remove landmines in Southeast Asia and support the establishment of victim support programs for those affected by remnants of war. The legislation also recognizes the contributions of the many communities and Diasporas from Southeast Asia who supported and defended the United States Armed Forces during the war in Vietnam.

In addition to recognizing April 4, 2025 as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action and recognizes April 30, 2025 as the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, the resolution also:

    • reaffirms the leadership of the United States in eliminating landmines and unexploded ordnance;
    • acknowledges the global impacts of landmines and highlights the United States role in clearing landmines, cluster bombs, and other munitions;
    • recognizes the U.S. Servicemembers and the Southeast Asian Communities that supported them during the Vietnam War;
    • recognizes the ongoing humanitarian harm caused by unexploded ordnance remaining in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia;
    • recognizes additional humanitarian priorities caused by the use of landmines, cluster bombs, and munitions in Ukraine, the Middle East, and elsewhere;
    • affirms the Senate’s commitment to support international humanitarian efforts to eliminate landmines and unexploded ordnance;
    • calls upon the U.S. Government to continue providing funding necessary to support international humanitarian demining activities; and
    • reaffirms the goals of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

“We at The HALO Trust are grateful for the leadership of Senator Tammy Baldwin in introducing a resolution to recognize International Mine Awareness Day. Demining programs provide life-saving support across the globe while making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. This legislation is critical to reaffirming the U.S. commitment to demining and honors the tireless efforts of deminers who work every day to make communities safe,” said Chris Whatley, Executive Director, The HALO Trust (USA).

“As the daughter of a surgeon who treated survivors of landmines and cluster munitions, I’ve seen the lasting impact of these weapons. I’m deeply grateful for Senator Baldwin’s resolution recognizing April 4, 2025, as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It honors the courage of survivors, deminers, and medical professionals—and reaffirms our duty to act. Thanks to strong U.S. leadership, we’ve made real progress but millions still live in fear. I urge continued U.S. leadership and funding to rid the world of these deadly legacies of war once and for all,” said Sera Koulabdara, CEO, Legacies of War and Co-Chair of the War Legacies Working Group.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congresswoman Tenney Introduces Legislation to Stimulate Investments into American Manufacturing

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22)

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today lead 19 of her colleagues in introducing the Building Advanced Semiconductors Investment Credit (BASIC) Act to increase and extend the advanced manufacturing investment credit.

This legislation increases the advanced manufacturing investment credit from 25% to 35% and extends its availability through December 31, 2030. Semiconductors are essential to nearly every modern technology and producing these domestically is foundational to both America’s economy and its national security. Extending this tax credit will promote further investment in establishing new production facilities to manufacture semiconductors, which will spur job growth in advanced science, technology, engineering, and manufacturing, as well as ensure that the United States can compete globally and maintain its technological dominance over adversaries like China. Extending this critical tax incentive signals long-term U.S. commitment to tech leadership and levels the playing field for American companies ensuring the United States does not fall behind in this critical strategic sector.

Additional original cosponsors of this legislation include Tom Suozzi (D-NY), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Mike Carey (R-OH), Joe Morelle (D-NY), John Mannion (D-NY), Paul Tonko (D-NY), Tim Kennedy (D-NY), Josh Riley (D-NY), Mike Simpson (R-ID), Jen Kiggans (R-VA), Joe Neguse (D-CO), Young Kim (R-CA), Becca Balint (D-VT), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Steven Horsford (D-NV), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Ro Khanna (D-CA), and Suhas Subramanyan (D-VA).

“To restore America as a manufacturing powerhouse, we must empower American companies with the tools they need to succeed. The BASIC Act extends and expands the manufacturing investment credit, encouraging investment in the U.S. economy and enabling companies like Micron to build factories right here in New York. This legislation works hand in hand with the Trump administration to revitalize American manufacturing and bring jobs back to the United States,” said Congresswoman Tenney.

“Bringing semiconductor manufacturing to the United States is both a critical national security priority and massive economic opportunity for the next generation of American workers,” said Congressman Carey. “Increasing and extending this tax credit will help our economy grow and create a reliable supply chain for critical semiconductors. I am proud to join with my colleagues on this legislation and look forward to it passing.”

“Bringing semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States is critical not only for our national security but also to ensure we no longer rely on adversaries like Communist China for this vital industry that powers nearly every modern technology. Extending and enhancing this tax credit will strengthen our domestic supply chain, create good-paying American jobs, and help our nation remain competitive on the global stage. I thank my friend Rep. Claudia Tenney for leading this important effort,” said Congresswoman Malliotakis.

“Securing America’s economic and national security starts with rebuilding our domestic supply chains. By strengthening and extending the semiconductor investment credit, the BASIC Act will empower American innovators, bolster advanced manufacturing, and help ensure the United States—not China—leads the future of technology,” said Congressman Fitzpatrick.

“The Building Advanced Semiconductors Investment Credit (BASIC) is critical legislation to advance semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. BASIC will generate additional economic activity across the semiconductor ecosystem in the U.S. over the next four years to meet economic and national security goals,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron Chairman, President and CEO. “Micron is appreciative of the leadership from Rep. Tenney and Members of Congress to ensure semiconductor companies can make cost-competitive, long-term investments in advanced U.S. manufacturing.

“As the historic investment being made by Micron moves forward, partners at every level of government must continue to work together to do everything we can to expedite this critical investment – especially for our national security. The Building Advanced Semiconductors Investment Credit (BASIC) is vital for semiconductor manufacturers like Micron in order to maintain global competitiveness and create certainty in their construction timelines. I want to thank Congresswoman Tenney for her leadership in advocating for the expansion of BASIC and passionate advocacy to help Central New York and Upstate New York become the hub for memory technology manufacturing in the world,” said Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon.

“Extending and expanding the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit is crucial for growth of U.S. semiconductor manufacturing to strengthen national and economic security. The Building Advanced Semiconductors Investment Credit legislation will help GlobalFoundries continue to expand and modernize our facilities in Upstate New York and Vermont, as well as to ensure that the U.S. semiconductor industry maintains global competitiveness. GlobalFoundries is proud to be making chips in America and we would like to thank Congresswoman Tenney and the co-sponsors of this legislation for their continued support for domestic semiconductor manufacturing,” said Dr. Thomas Caulfield, Executive Chairman of GlobalFoundries.

“The statutory extension of IRC §48D past its December 31, 2026 expiration is an essential factor that supports TSMC’s continued expansion in Arizona, specifically our recently announced plans to build three additional chip fabrication plants, two back-end packaging facilities, and a major semiconductor R&D center. TSMC’s overall U.S. investment now stands at $165 billion. The company is deeply grateful to Representative Tenney and her cosponsors for leading this important legislation,” said Peter Cleveland, SVP, Global Government Affairs, TSMC.

“This legislation is a timely and essential measure to secure long-term investment in the U.S. semiconductor sector and ensure our domestic industry remains competitive in an increasingly aggressive global marketplace. By increasing the investment tax credit to 35% and prolonging the eligibility period, this bill addresses the structural cost disadvantages that U.S.-based manufacturers face—especially compared to Asia—where faster permitting, cheaper labor, and state-backed subsidies give foreign competitors an unfair edge. BASIC directly offsets these imbalances and provides semiconductor manufacturers the financial certainty needed to move forward with building new fabrication facilities here in the United States over the next four years. I commend Representative Tenney and the co-sponsors of this legislation for their leadership and foresight,” said Jason Hsu, Senior Fellow, Hudson Institute.

“To win the chip race, the U.S. must continue to reinforce domestic chip production and advance innovation. The BASIC Act is a welcome effort to strengthen this proven driver of investment by increasing the credit’s rate and extending its duration, spurring continued investment in America’s growing ecosystem. This proposal, along with the expansion of the credit to include chip R&D and design, is critical to America’s competitiveness and sustained technology leadership,” said John Neuffer, President and CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association.

“The CHIPS Act has spurred a massive resurgence in American semiconductor production. We lost our global leadership in chips, a technology we invented, because other countries pursued effective industrial strategies while we did nothing. The United States has finally woken up to the fact that we can fight back, and we have hundreds of billions of dollars in new domestic semiconductor investment to show for it. Rep. Tenney and her colleagues deserve tremendous credit for their continued focus on smart public policy that strengthens American industry,” said Chris Griswold, Policy Director, American Compass.

“The advanced manufacturing investment credit is a vital tool to support domestic manufacturing and growth of key industries like semiconductors, microelectronics and more,” said Robert M. Simpson, president of CenterState CEO, in Syracuse. “This legislation to increase the tax credit to 35% and extend its availability through 2030 will further support Central New York’s ability to lead in the domestic production of chips that we rely on every day, making the region an essential hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation, while supporting national and economic security.”

“This bi-partisan legislation is a home run for New York and its goal of being the leader is semiconductor manufacturing. We applaud Congresswoman Tenney for getting the support of 17 colleagues behind the bill. We urge all of congress to support this legislation that will undoubtedly create jobs and grow New York’s economy for years to come,” said Heather Mulligan, President & CEO, The Business Council of New York State Inc.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Trump’s Ukraine mineral deal finally lands as US economy shivers

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Rachael Jolley, International Affairs Editor

Donald Trump promised he could sort out a peace deal for the Ukraine war in 24 hours. It still hasn’t happened. Instead the US administration has taken 100 days just to sign a mineral deal with Ukraine.

This agreement will give the US access to revenue from Ukrainian natural resources, including 100 major deposits of critical minerals. It also has huge symbolism. Ukrainians see it as a sign that the US is committed to staying involved in their country, and also as a warming of the relationship between Ukraine’s president and Trump. It will also be a signal to Russia that what hurts Ukraine could also hurt the US economy.

Of course, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt calls the deal “historic” and puts its brilliance down to Trump’s amazing negotiation skills.

However, in the week that Trump celebrated 100 days in office, others would argue that Trump’s deal-making skills are nowhere near as astute as he thinks they are. That he gave Russia way too much room to manoeuvre in the early months of 2025 by leaning so clearly in Putin’s direction, allowing the Russian leader to think he could pretty much do anything he fancied and win as much of Ukraine as he desired.

US and Ukraine sign a mineral deal.

But US national security advisor Michael Waltz, who has announced he is standing down, has signalled that the balance may now be shifting, when he said the minerals deal was “a momentous step” and: “Russia needs to come to the table.”

As Bridget Storrie from UCL’s Institute for Global Prosperity has pointed out, this deal was all about what the global super power was going to get as justification for its support in the war, rather than about how it could increase prosperity in a war-torn country.

Ukraine minerals deal: the idea that natural resource extraction can build peace has been around for decades

Andrew Gawthorpe, a lecturer in history and international studies at Leiden University, has looked at the details and believes Kyiv is getting more than many expected, and more than was on offer earlier in the year, when Trump fell out so publicly with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, at a White House press conference. As part of the deal Ukraine will retain ownership of its natural resources. All profits are to be invested in Ukraine for ten years after the agreement comes into force. It also looks like Washington will contribute new military aid.

US-Ukraine minerals deal looks better for Kyiv than expected – but Trump is an unpredictable partner

    Presidential power

Trump’s first 100 days have been tumultuous, not just for the US, but for most of the world. His “liberation day” tariffs on international goods have turned existing economic balances and expectations upside down.

Countries that have long seen themselves as confident allies of the US – Canada, Denmark and Germany, for instance – now see the landscape somewhat differently, given the high US tariffs that have landed on their doorsteps. No longer convinced of the strength of their relationship with the world’s superpower, many are rethinking both their economic plans and their alliances.

Meanwhile, China, the main focus of Trump’s tariffs, can see opportunities opening up to forge stronger relationships with, and sales to, other countries also looking for new markets. China has not crumbled yet under the weight of 145% US tariffs. And China’s president, Xi Jinping, is showing no sign of blinking first and heading to Washington to negotiate as Trump was clearly expecting.

Trump now swings daily from claiming he is negotiating with China and that their tariffs can come down, to stating that Beijing will cave. All that sound and fury sounds a good deal like wavering. And with US supermarket bosses warning of empty shelves around the corner, and US ports expecting traffic from China to significantly slow this month, as Nottingham University’s Chee Meng Tan sets out, there is every reason to expect Trump will cave and open negotiations before Xi Jinping does.

China has identified how to fight back against Trump’s tariffs, and is not ready to back down

Many nations now see the US as a far less trustworthy partner now than in the past. The most obvious of these is Canada, which just elected the leader of a party that was 20 percentage points behind in the polls in January and expected to be beaten badly not long ago. But when Trump decided that he wanted Canada as the 51st state, normality went out the window over its northern border.

This week, newly elected Canadian prime minister Mark Carney said he would seek meetings with Trump with the “full knowledge that we have many, many other options than the United States”, promising to strengthen relations with “reliable partners” in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

“We are over the shock of America’s betrayal,” he said. He is ready to write a new foreign policy. He’s not the only one.

Two of the US’s firm friends for decades, South Korea and Taiwan, are now not so sure that they see Washington as a dependable ally, according to a report from research organisation the Brookings Institution. It saw a significant jump in the numbers of people who saw the US as untrustworthy from July 2024, to March 2025.

This matters, as Steve Dunne, a political scientist at the University of Warwick points out, because without trust people and nations are likely not to honour their commitments. After the second world war, the western allies decided to create a series of international bodies to avert such a disaster happening again, and to encourage nations to follow a set of rules that would encourage democracy and trust in each other.

In his first 100 days, says Dunne, Trump broke the compact of trust with countries that had a long alliance with the US, and that could have a deep impact on the trust that has existed for decades between western nations.

Donald Trump’s first 100 days have badly damaged trust in America both economically and as an ally

    Global power reducing?

Declining trust in the US could well reduce other forms of its global power. As well as financially and politically, in the post-war decades the US has influenced the world, by exporting its culture, its films, its television programmes and its ideas, as well as importing tourists to visit its national treasures, from Yosemite national park to New York City.

In the past 100 days, international tourists are reported to be cancelling their bookings, partly worried about the welcome, or the lack of it, they may encounter at the border. Summer airline bookings from Canada (21%), Germany (17%) and the Netherlands (12%) to the US have fallen significantly for this year, although other countries such as UK show only a minor fall.

Admittedly, Trump told voters that he wanted to put “America first”. However, at his inauguration, the president declared he wanted to make America the “most respected nation on earth”. That achievement is looking quite far off at the moment. In fact, in many countries it is going the other way.

That international respect took a significant hit at one of the most remarkable moments of the past 100 days, when Trump proceeded to take Zelensky to task publicly for a range of offences including not being grateful enough for US support and not wearing a suit.

So what has Trump achieved domestically in his first 100 days and how does that match up against the promises he made? Let’s look at some of the plans he set out in his inauguration speech.

Trump said he wanted to increase US wealth. But current economic indicators are more than a bit shaky, with US stock markets falling and rising on a regular basis as they follow Trump’s on-and-off-again announcements on tariff negotiations with various countries. On April 30, the day after Trump’s big 100 days rally, stocks fell after data was released showing a contraction in the GDP of the US in the first quarter.

But Trump has told his supporters that, in the long term, tariffs will work and manufacturing jobs will benefit. So far, Republican voters still believe in Trump’s policies on jobs and the economy, with 82% approving, according to a recent Economist/YouGov poll. Only 8% of Democrats and 32% of independent voters do though.

Many of the big decisions we have seen playing out in the first 100 days – including the Elon Musk-led dismantling of some parts of government and Trump’s swing at driving down immigration – were detailed in the Project 2025 document, published the conservative think-tank the Heritage Foundation before the election, says Dafydd Townley of the University of Portsmouth. But it also hints at what may come next, including more legislation restricting American women’s access to abortion further.

How Project 2025 became the blueprint for Donald Trump’s second term

On January 20 Trump thought that Americans stood “on the verge of the four greatest years in American history”. For many Americans worried about their pensions, savings and the cost of groceries, the future is not looking so great right now. But for those who were sharp focused on cutting immigration, Trump may have made the great start they were hoping for.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Speaker Johnson Outlines Roadmap for America’s Industrial Comeback

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04)

WASHINGTON — Today, Speaker Johnson delivered closing remarks at the Hill and Valley Forum that detailed how President Trump and Republicans in Congress are laying the groundwork for America’s industrial renewal.

Click here to watch the full speech

    Read Speaker Johnson’s remarks below:

I want to talk to you about an important issue that I know is top of mind for all of you and that’s about some long-held assumptions. There’s a long-held assumption out there that government and innovation must be at odds. We don’t believe that. You don’t believe that.

But I think today’s thoughtful and insightful conversations – and most of American history for that matter – actually tell a different story. Many of our most consequential innovations have emerged from a healthy interplay between private ingenuity and public engagement.

Today, America is eager to get back to the days of making and building things again. And rightly so. For the better part of this century, we’ve actually been moving in the opposite direction. From the steel towns of Pennsylvania to the textile mills of the Carolinas, American communities watched as their factories shut down and main streets emptied out. We were told that we could simply innovate here and build elsewhere. The result was a gradual erosion of our industrial strength, which was part of the great strength of America.

In recent years, we’ve seen the consequences of allowing the industrial backbone of our economy to atrophy, whether it’s strategic vulnerabilities in semiconductors, rare earths, and pharmaceuticals, or the regulations that smother businesses and jobs far too often.

Our economy is coming back. We are doing the right things right now. We are making the right decisions to get this going. And that’s after the very damaging effects of Bidenomics the last four years, but we also see warning signs below the surface.

I think we owe it to ourselves to be frank about this because we’re the ones that have to figure this out. Company profits are up, but the productivity of key American industries of course is down. Unemployment is low, but the number of Americans in job market still stagnates still below pre-pandemic levels. And our industrial capacity – the real engine of a resilient economy – has barely begun to recover from decades of neglect.

What we are slowly learning is that our technological and our industrial strength is inextricably linked to our national prosperity and security. People in this room understand that, but others are taking notice.

This situation didn’t happen by accident, it didn’t happen overnight. Decades worth of policymakers made it too easy to offshore entire industries, while providing few incentives to reinvest here in the USA. And it happened because government forgot that its role is not to control the markets, but to cultivate the conditions in which innovation can not only survive, but thrive.

We saw this failure play out in real time under the last administration. I mean this is just objective fact, I don’t want to give you a partisan speech, but we need to look at reality. President Biden put the full weight of government behind clean energy, EVs, and broadband as a way to implement his green new economy. What we got instead was billions in spending with very little to show for it, if anything at all.

The EV charger program has to be one of the worst boondoggles ever.  There were fewer than 10 functioning stations built in the first three years. Billions went into these failed programs, while burdensome permitting processes and red tape worked against the very innovation the Administration hoped to spur.

And while Joe Biden paused America’s LNG exports, his Administration enriched adversaries like Russia, who were all too willing to fill this void in the market. Our European allies quite literally had to go get their natural gas and get their energy needs met by Vladimir Putin. It fueled his war machine and caused so much of the chaos we’re still dealing with.

These policies don’t just handicap America and American technology; they fundamentally misunderstood the role of government in our system of free enterprise.

Republicans, and especially President Trump, see things very differently. We believe government’s job is not to pick winners and losers. It’s to set the rules of the road, clear the obstacles, and get out of the way so American capital and ingenuity can get to work.

We have to allow the job creators, and the risk takers, and the entrepreneurs, and the economy to do what they do. government can’t have a boot on the neck of those people and expect them to perform today.

We’ve got an opportunity to reckon with all these failures, to recalibrate appropriately and get America back to being an industrial powerhouse once again. Our survival as a nation, I think, depends upon this. So what role should government actually play? Let me just outline three quick, broad policies that Republicans in Congress are pursuing right now to accomplish all this in concert with the White House, because this is a – we’re trying to operate as a seamless team. You’ll see that we’re working day to day, hand in hand with the administration, and that Republicans who control now both chambers of Congress, because we have unified government, you’ll see the Senate and House Republicans working together in tandem. That’s very deliberate, I think, very, very important.

But three broad policies that we’re pursuing: number one, unleashing abundant American energy. I don’t have to tell the people in this auditorium why that’s so important. Artificial intelligence and data centers are consuming enormous amounts of energy, and this demand is growing exponentially. They come in and show us the charts where the demand goes like this on a chart, and we’re behind the eight ball already, as we know, if we’re to support these innovations and build the jobs and factories of tomorrow, we need reliable, affordable, abundant energy. And that means that unleashing the full potential of American energy and cutting red tape and tapping into every energy source, like commercial nuclear and liquefied natural gas, is just critically important.

Our second priority that we’re trying to pursue here is keeping taxes low and keeping competition in the marketplace. The 2017 Trump tax cuts sparked a real resurgence in American industry. The year after they passed, business investment jumped by roughly 10% real wages grew and companies began to reinvest in US manufacturing again. I mean, quite literally, all boats were rising. We say in these big forums as going around the country to a campaign and say, look, President Trump is a known entity. The first Trump Administration, look at what he did and what he was able to do prior to COVID, we had the greatest economy in the history of the world since we cut taxes and cut regulations. It’s not rocket science. We aspire to get back to that at that time, every boat was rising. I mean literally, every demographic in the country and every region in the country was doing better because these policies were implemented.

Right now, we’re working to make these tax cuts, the tax cuts of the first administration, permanent, not just for families, but also to ensure that American innovators have the confidence to take risks and to reinvest boldly in expanding our industrial base.

The third big priority I wanted to mention today is reducing the size and scope of government. We get two important levers to do that. One is reining in wasteful spending. Number two, it’s cutting back regulations again. Under President Biden, we cross the dangerous threshold of $35 trillion in national debt. This is a dire situation. I know the people in this room understand it. A lot of people back home don’t have a full scope of the threat that this is. When we bring in leaders in the Pentagon or the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the last several years, I served on the House Armed Services Committee, among other assignments. We would ask them, “what is the greatest national threat to  our country? What is our top national security concern?” And you would expect them to say, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea. They don’t. They say the debt. And it’s true that our interest payments alone are on track to outpace our entire defense fund. It’s not a sustainable situation, and everybody knows that. Our adversaries know it as well.

So we’re working right now on the one big, beautiful bill is the reconciliation process, and we’re going through that. We’re taking an honest look at every corner of the budget, including programs along considered to be “untouchable.” We know that when we work to root out wasteful and abuse, just like any smart business, we make our system and these vital programs more effective and efficient the people who really need and deserve them. And we’ve got all hands on deck to do this at the same time. We need to cut harmful regulations that smother innovation.

All of you run into this, I’m sure at some point or another, may be dealing with it today, but I hope to tell you, in good faith that help is on the way. America’s industrial comeback can’t wait on government bureaucracy. We need to clear the runway for capital to move swiftly into new factories and robotics and advanced automation. Just before COVID, Tesla built its giga factory in Shanghai. They did it in under one year. If you did that same thing here, it would take just as long to pull together the darn permits just to get started building. We can and we must do better. We cannot allow other countries to exceed our performance in that way.

Nowhere is it more necessary for Congress to move with caution than AI. If we over regulate here, which you know, Washington tends to do, we don’t just risk regulating American AI out of existence. We would cede critical grounded China and this fateful race to dominate this new technology, and it’s a race that we cannot afford to lose.

Our priority with AI and technology more broadly, is create an environment that’s competitive and open to new and emerging players, and not just one that benefits the big guys, right?

Let me talk about tariffs briefly, and I know I’m the last speaker today, so I don’t want to give you a long policy speech, but I think some of this is important, and I’m sure it’s timely for you, and it’s probably one of the questions you would ask if we opened it up.

President Trump is taking a serious look at our trade relationships, and it’s something I think that we should applaud. We have been mistreated. We have unfair trade partners around the globe, and this has been going on for quite some time. We’re living in the relic of really, what happened after World War II. Think about it, the historical terms I mean, we emerged as a great superpower, and Europe largely had to be rebuilt. So all these trade agreements were made with America as the new great nation, and the emerging superpower, and they sort of rationalized, “well, Americans can afford it, and we need a break.”

Well, I mean, we’re a long time past World War II. President Trump’s right to point it out. He said, reciprocal trade means it’s got to be fair. He said, every time I talk to him “Mr. President, we’re free traders, free market guys.” He goes “yeah, free and fair trade.” Well, that’s a good point. So tariffs are one tool among many that he’s using to try to do a rebalancing there. He’s trying to rebalance trade and restore a level playing field for American workers and businesses. We’re in uncharted waters on this. This hasn’t been done, so there’s bound to be some market disruption. That’s what we’ve all kind of lived through the last several weeks.

But I trust the President’s instincts here, and I know that American business leaders are tired of tactics from China. They just constantly undercut and outmaneuver American firms. They’ve stolen our IP, everybody here knows it. People are tired of competing with Chinese firms that are propped up by state subsidies and use actual slave labor to produce their products and they steal our intellectual property.

But tariffs are just one part of the equation securing our long-term security and the competitive edge that will depend that we’ll need all that’s going to depend on leaning into innovations like AI and advanced robotics and automation. I really empathize with Americans who feel uneasy about the rapid pace of technology advancement.  I get that, but history gives us reason to be optimistic about this. From the automobile to the aircraft to the internet, each new breakthrough has unlocked entirely new industries and professions and forms of prosperity that have worked in our favor. They’ve transformed the way we live. We should always invite and celebrate those advances, because we know the better technology makes our workers more productive, and when our workers are more productive, they earn more, they build more and we see more human flourishing.

At the end of the day, that is our objective. We are trying to bring about human flourishing. That’s the goal of all this. It should be the goal of all of our public policy. Not everybody thinks about it that way, but we’re trying to, we’re trying to change things that they do. We should invite new ideas to reinvigorate our industrial base, not just to decouple from China, although that’s critical, but to give the American people a renewed sense of pride in what we make and what we build and what we export to the world, I have to say I’m incredibly bullish on America, not just because of the talent and ingenuity in this room and across the country, but because of what I’ve seen with my own eyes around the country.

I’ll just leave you with this quick anecdote. Two weeks ago, I was down in south Texas. I visited Saronic. You’ll probably know some of you guys know company. Y’all heard about it earlier on the stage, I think, but its headquarters sit in an unassuming lot right outside downtown Austin. I drove up and I was like, we’re here, but what I saw inside this building was truly extraordinary. What they’re doing is incredible work to bring back American shipbuilding, essentially from the ashes. We’re blessed where I’m from because Saronic is soon expanding manufacturing operation in my home state, Louisiana, and we’re going to welcome them with open arms, because it’s really exciting stuff.

I’m telling this story because that is what American renewal looks like. It’s not just about Silicon Valley or Washington or bringing back the smokestacks of the 50’s. This is about expanding the pool of opportunity for every American in every community, in every corner of this great country. It’s about pioneering innovation. It’s about taking risks and betting big on America. Once again, it can happen anywhere in the country, and we want to bring about the conditions to allow that to happen. And that’s why I’m more confident than ever that our best days still lie ahead of us.

Last thought, because I know you want to go. In July of next year, we’ll celebrate our 250th anniversary as a nation. This grand experiment in self-governance has lasted two and a half centuries. We have already exceeded the expiration date, the lifespan of a nation like ours, a republic, and we’ve done something totally different that no one had ever done before. America was truly revolutionary. The very concept was and we’re built upon these very firm foundations, these ideas, some of the things I’ve articulated today are made us who we are.

Sometimes in this job, I take the opportunity to go and speak to university and college students, and I’m often alarmed my friends, because I will ask at the beginning, I’ll get on a stage like this, and I’ll say, “would you raise your hand if you agree that you live in the greatest nation in the history of the world?” And sadly, sometimes you get 10-15% of the hands raised in an auditorium like this, I’ll say, “gee, well, you don’t believe in the live in the greatest nation? Would you at least concede you live in a great nation?” Get a few more hands, and then I spend the rest of time explaining to them. I’m a constitutional law attorney. I can put on my case. I need several hours, but I try to convince it, and in 20 minutes or so I say “look, you live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. It’s not even close by any objective measure.” We’re the most successful, most powerful, most free, most benevolent nation that has ever been on the earth.

But there’s a reason that we are, and it’s incumbent upon us as stewards of this great Republic if we are going to keep this grand experiment in self-governance, it is incumbent upon us to understand what those foundations are and to nurture them, to get back to those foundations, because we can’t allow them to be destroyed.

The new five-year agreement will allow the marquee tournament to remain in the New York City Metro area, providing unmatched benefits to the LPGA players, AJGA junior golfers, and the local community. After three years at the prestigious Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, NJ, the Mizuho Americas Open will travel just a few miles west to Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, NJ, for 2026 and 2027, and then back to its long-term home at Liberty National for the remaining years through 2030. Additionally, LPGA Tour Icon and Mizuho Americas Brand Ambassador Michelle Wie West will continue to serve as Tournament Host.

“We first partnered with the LPGA, AJGA, and Liberty National in 2023 to create a one-of-a-kind tournament that stands apart from the others,” said Jerry Rizzieri, President & CEO of Mizuho Securities USA and Head of Americas Corporate and Investment Bank. “We share this tournament – not only with the players – but also with our employees and clients. We remain deeply committed to our investment in women’s sports as we aim to help advance the next generation of talent and level the playing field for women, both on and off the golf course.”

During the five-year partnership, the prize purse will continue to escalate, ensuring that the Mizuho Americas Open remains one of the largest non-Major championship purses on the LPGA Tour. Mizuho raised the bar for player experience and will continue to provide complimentary first-class accommodations and transportation for all LPGA players participating in the event through 2030.

Mizuho’s continued support of the LPGA and its players speaks volumes about the company’s culture and its commitment to empowering women and fueling their aspirations,” said Liz Moore, Interim LPGA Commissioner. “Through our partnership with Mizuho, we’re able to showcase the world’s best golfers on a global stage, right outside one of the world’s most iconic cities, while uniquely providing rising AJGA stars the opportunity to compete alongside them — creating an unparalleled platform to inspire the next generation and furthering our core mission of using the game of golf to transform and enrich the lives of girls and women

Mizuho will continue to host its DrivHER Summit, a leadership forum developed in conjunction with Girls Inc., to help young women explore, aspire, and achieve. As tournament host, I feel inspired by how they’ve supercharged this event through innovative philanthropic and marketing efforts that put women’s golf front and center in the world’s largest media market.”

    About Mountain Ridge Country Club
Founded in 1912, Mountain Ridge Country Club has long been considered a historic venue. Originally established in West Orange, NJ, the Club moved to its current site in West Caldwell, located just 20 miles from New York City, in 1929 when it commissioned famed golf course architect Donald Ross to design a championship 18-hole course across 282 rolling acres. Often described as one of the NY City Metropolitan Area’s “hidden gems”, the course has always been viewed as a classic Donald Ross design. The course was considered a difficult test when it opened in 1931, and little has changed in the 90+ years since. The course is known for its distinctly Ross features, especially its challenging greens. Ross designed each nine-hole loop to wind down to the lower part of the property and conclude with a long assent back to the iconic fieldstone clubhouse, designed by renowned architect Clifford C. Wendehack. The venue has hosted many championships including the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship and the 2021 LPGA Cognizant Founder’s Cup. Over its century-long history, Mountain Ridge has been home to many prominent members and continues its commitment to excellence, community, philanthropy, and the game of golf.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Malliotakis Introduces Legislation to Revitalize U.S. Medical Manufacturing

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11)

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, along with Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL-27), Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY-15), Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-CO-03), and Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL-09) introduced The Medical Manufacturing, Economic Development, and Sustainability (MMEDS) Act to revitalize domestic medical manufacturing. The legislation aims to strengthen production by offering federal tax benefits and other incentives to pharmaceutical manufacturers that operate in the United States or relocate their facilities to U.S. soil, with a particular focus on economically distressed areas across the nation and its territories.

This legislation will secure the U.S. medical supply chain, restore economic well-being, and protect America’s patients. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that our health, economic, and national security are at risk because of our dependency on foreign jurisdictions to manufacture vital medical supplies. The MMEDS Actencourages U.S. companies to re-shore operations from nations deemed to pose a risk to U.S. medical preparedness into economically distressed zones within the United States by providing a dollar-for-dollar credit against Federal taxes to U.S. companies for the wages and capital investments made in distressed zones, and for purchases made by a manufacturer from within a distressed zone. An economically distressed zone is defined as an area that has historically suffered from pervasive poverty, unemployment, and low labor force participation, resulting in a prolonged period of economic decline.

The MMEDS Act would also establish a BARDA-led public-private Strategic Initiative to drive innovation and the development of advanced population health medicines, while also providing tax incentives to encourage such innovation in economically distressed areas.

“I am proud to introduce the bipartisan MMEDS Act to bring medical manufacturing to the United States and revitalize an industry that once thrived in regions such as Puerto Rico,” said Rep. Malliotakis. “The COVID-19 pandemic made clear the urgent need to restore our domestic supply chain so that we are not dependent on adversaries like Communist China for critical pharmaceutical and medical supplies needed by America’s hospitals and patients. The support of my colleagues representing different corners of the nation demonstrates the broad, bipartisan recognition that strengthening our medical supply chain is a national priority. I also thank Puerto Rico’s Governor Jenniffer González-Colón for her leadership and partnership in advancing this important initiative.”

“As recently as 2019, data has shown that the United States imports nearly two-thirds of its medicines and medical supplies from Europe and Asia. This must change,” said Rep. Maria Salazar. “The MMEDS Act will prioritize American manufacturing and restore our medical supply chain while creating jobs and economic growth in Florida, Puerto Rico, and across the country.”

“It is an honor to be an original cosponsor of the Medical Manufacturing, Economic Development, and Sustainability (MMEDS) Act from Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, who is continuing Gov. Jennifer González-Colón’s critical legislation to strengthen our nation’s medical supply chain from the previous Congress. This bill is particularly important for Puerto Rico and would help revitalize the island’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, create good-paying jobs, and support long-term economic growth.” Rep. Ritchie Torres

“I am proud to co-sponsor the MMEDS Act, which will provide tax incentives to bring medical manufacturing to rural areas in my district,” said Rep. Jeff Hurd. “This legislation will help grow manufacturing industries and support the development of advanced health medicines in Colorado’s 3rd District.”

“I thank my dear friend Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis for her leadership in reintroducing the MMEDS Act in the 119th Congress. This legislation supports bringing critical medical manufacturing back to American soil, including in Puerto Rico, fostering economic growth and job creation in economically distressed areas. It authorizes targeted tax credits tied to investment and repatriation of medical manufacturing companies, thus prioritizing measured incentives for work undertaken in the U.S. and safeguarding our supply chain. Our country has the infrastructure, expertise, and workforce needed to remain a leader in innovation, technology, and manufacturing. In the case of Puerto Rico, we host some of the main global medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, paired with a highly trained and specialized workforce that abides by American standards for safety and quality. I look forward to continue working with Congresswoman Malliotakis, who has seen first-hand the manufacturing capabilities in Puerto Rico and the rest of the country, and Representatives Salazar and Torres to get this bipartisan bill across the finish line,” said Governor Jenniffer González-Colón.

Earlier this year, Malliotakis reintroduced the Supply Chain Security and Growth Act of 2025, bipartisan legislation that would leverage Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) to facilitate a rapid movement of critical U.S. supply chains to Puerto Rico from less desirable and unreliable locations such as China.

    View the Bill text HERE.

The MMEDS Act was originally introduced by then Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González-Colón in the 118th Congress.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: New funding supports fight against invasive plants

Source: Government of Canada regional news

May is Invasive Species Action Month and 33 organizations throughout B.C. will be able to continue their work fighting invasive plants, due in part to a funding boost from the Province.

“B.C. has some of the most amazing ecosystems in the world, with many that are unique, fragile and in danger from invasive plants,” said Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests. “No one person, group, agency or government can effectively control invasive plant species alone, and collaboration is critical to everyone’s success. The work these groups do is crucial in our fight together to ensure B.C.’s unique environments remain healthy and vibrant.”

Invasive plants can disrupt ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry and adversely affect agriculture production and water quality, causing substantial economic and environmental damage. They may also pose a health risk to people and animals.

Nearly $3 million will go toward groups, such as regional invasive species committees, local governments, environmental groups, researchers and the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia, to continue collaboration and support of invasive plant programs and management actions.

“In Canada and B.C., invasive plants are spreading and taking over critical lands, especially sensitive ecosystems such as grasslands and riparian areas,” said Gail Wallin, executive director, Invasive Species Council of British Columbia. “They are estimated to cost us over $2 billion in losses annually. As many invasive species are intentionally introduced through activities, such as gardening or moved by tires, it is critical to stop the spread of invasive plants through increased awareness and adopting responsible practices, including PlantWise and Play Clean Go.”

The work of these groups supports B.C.’s Invasive Plant Program in identifying and reporting where invasive plant species have been found, encouraging landowners and managers to control invasive plants and managing high-risk infestations to limit further spread throughout the province.

Some of the targeted invasive plant species in B.C. are: Japanese, Bohemian and giant knotweed; marsh plume thistle; common tansy; wild chervil; garlic mustard; poison hemlock; spotted knapweed; common bugloss; orange and yellow (non-native) hawkweeds; giant hogweed; blueweed; tansy ragwort; spartina species; hoary alyssum; purple loosestrife; field scabious; leafy spurge; yellow flag iris; and Scotch broom.

People can report invasive plant species sightings from anywhere in B.C. by using the Report Invasives BC smartphone app or through the online reporting tool:
    https://www.gov.bc.ca/invasive-specieshttp://www.gov.bc.ca/invasive-species

    Quotes:

Philip Weyl, head of weed biocontrol, Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) –

“Invasive plant (weed) biological control is a long-term sustainable tool for managing invasive plants that is safe and effective, but it does take time in terms research to ensure safety. The partnership between the B.C. Ministry of Forests and CABI provides support that forms an integral part in developing biological control options for invasive plant species of concern for B.C. and Canada as a whole.”

Kathy Ma Green, executive director, Fraser Valley Invasive Species Society –

“Invasive plants cause long-lasting harm by altering our ecosystems, damaging our infrastructure and impacting our crops, livestock and natural resources. Due to landscape-level flooding, the Fraser Valley faces an ongoing challenge in managing the resulting increased spread of invasive plants like knotweed and wild chervil. The Province’s continued support and invasive plant funding are critical in order to protect our region’s important industries, natural areas and the quality of life of residents.”

    Quick Facts:

    • The Invasive Species Council of B.C. assists with invasive species program communications and co-ordination.
    • The council develops best-management practices in collaboration with regional organizations and invasive plant specialists that help increase public awareness and reporting of invasive species throughout the province.
    • Regional invasive species committees are non-profit societies that provide a forum for land managers and other stakeholders to co-ordinate invasive plant treatments and participate in outreach and educational opportunities.
    • Some regional groups also deliver invasive plant control actions.

Source: United Kingdom – Government Statements

    News story

Vimkunya vaccine approved to prevent disease caused by the chikungunya virus in people 12 years of age and older

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today (1 May 2025) approved a vaccine (Vimkunya) used to prevent disease caused by the chikungunya virus in people 12 years of age and older.

Chikungunya disease is caused by the chikungunya virus, which is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The disease is found in countries across Asia, Africa and the subtropical regions of the Americas. Most people infected with the virus develop fever, rash, and severe pain in multiple joints that typically resolve between one to two weeks, but symptoms may last for months or years.

This vaccine has been approved through the International Recognition Procedure (IRP). The IRP allows the MHRA to take into account the expertise and decision-making of trusted regulatory partners for the benefit of UK patients.

The MHRA conducts a targeted assessment of IRP applications and retains the authority to reject applications if the evidence provided is not considered sufficiently robust.

As with any medicine, the MHRA will keep the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine under close review. Anyone who suspects they are having a side effect from this medicine are encouraged to talk to their doctor, pharmacist or nurse and report it directly to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, either through the website (https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/) or by searching the Google Play or Apple App stores for MHRA Yellow Card.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Young Kim Marks Black April, 50 Years Since Fall of Saigon

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Young Kim (CA-39)

Washington, DC – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) joined fellow Orange County Reps. Derek Tran (CA-45) and Lou Correa (CA-46) to introduce a bipartisan resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of Black April and the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

Rep. Kim spoke on the House floor yesterday marking Black April. Watch HERE.

“Orange County is proudly home to the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam, and many Vietnamese Americans I represent fled Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon. As we mark the 50th anniversary of Black April, my heart is with our Vietnamese American community, the 2.7 million Americans who fought to protect Vietnam from communism, and Vietnamese people oppressed by the Vietnamese government,” said Rep. Young Kim. “I am proud to join this bipartisan resolution and will do my part as House Foreign Affairs East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee Chairwoman to work toward a better Vietnam that upholds human rights and freedom.”

“Black April – Tháng Tư Đen – is not just a solemn day in history, it is a reminder of the day hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people lost everything — our homes, our livelihoods, and our beloved country. Fifty years ago, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees were forced to leave the only home they knew – most of them boarding boats on uncharted waters, not knowing what awaited them on the other side of their journey,” said Rep. Derek Tran. “I share my own story with hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese Americans born to parents who fled our homeland with nothing. We have built communities in America that are unparalleled in their strength, prosperity, and commitment to preserving our history. As the first Vietnamese American to represent Orange County’s Little Saigon community in Congress, I am humbled by the responsibility to carry this history forward.  As we commemorate this solemn milestone, I invite my colleagues to join me in commemorating this solemn milestone and recommit to the values that matter most — democracy, human rights, and freedom.”

“I grew up and live in Orange County. And Orange County is home to the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam. As a member of Congress, I ask that we remember those one million Vietnamese individuals who were forced to flee from their homes, many of whom found safe haven right here in Orange County, and the nearly sixty thousand American service members who lost their lives fighting for freedom in Vietnam,” Rep. Lou Correa said. “We must never relent in our commitment to keeping alive the memory of those lost, protecting human rights, and defending democracy—at home, and abroad.”

“Today, April 30, 2025 is a day to honor and thank all who were part of our nation’s efforts in the Vietnam War. They include the 2.7 million soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen who courageously put boots on the ground when deployed to Vietnam and other southeast Asian nations supporting the war effort. We will always remember the 58,281 members of the US Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in the war and whose names are now engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. 1573 of those service members remain ‘Missing In Action.’ Today, America’s Gold Star Families – the parents, wives, siblings and children of those who gave their lives on those foreign shores – are the living legacies of 58,281 American heroes. On this 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, extend a resounding ‘Welcome Home’ and thank our nation’s Vietnam veterans. At the same time, stand in solidarity and support with the Gold Star Families whose family portraits and holiday meals were forever changed – by the empty space and unfilled seat – reserved for their loved ones who gave their lives in the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War,” said Tony Cordero, Gold Star Son of Maj. William E. Cordero, USAF – KIA June 22, 1965 in Vietnam/Laos, Chairman & Founder of Sons and Daughters In Touch – America’s Gold Star Children from the Vietnam War.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Largest joint immigration operation in Florida history leads to 1,120 criminal alien arrests during weeklong operation

Source: US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

MIAMI — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with law enforcement partners from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the state of Florida, led a first-of-its-kind statewide operation April 21 to April 26 that netted 1,120 criminal illegal alien arrests — the largest number in a single state in one week in ICE’s history. Sixty-three percent of those arrested had existing criminal arrests or convictions.

Arrests included 378 criminal illegal aliens with final orders of removal issued by an immigration judge. Officers arrested various violent offenders, gang members, sex offenders, fugitives from justice and those who pose significant public safety threats. Arrests include members of several different notoriously violent foreign terrorist organizations such as MS-13, Tren de Aragua, Brown Pride Aztecas, Barrio Azteca, Surenos (sur-13) and 18th Street Gang.

The countries of origin of those arrested include the following:

    • 437 from Guatemala
    • 280 from Mexico
    • 153 from Honduras
    • 48 from Venezuela
    • 24 from El Salvador
    • 178 from elsewhere

Those arrested who have final orders of removal or returned to the United States illegally after being deported are subject to immediate removal from the country. The remaining aliens are in ICE custody awaiting due process before an immigration judge or pending travel arrangements for removal.

“Last week’s operational success of arresting more than 1,100 criminal illegal aliens was truly a collaborative whole-of-government effort by our federal, state and local law enforcement partners in Florida,” said ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan. “Every day, our officers take to the streets and put their lives on the line to apprehend and remove dangerous criminal aliens, transnational gang members and foreign fugitives who have illegally entered the U.S. We are united in our determination to restore integrity to our nation’s immigration system and enhance public safety for all Americans.”

The state of Florida leads the nation with 287(g) partnerships. This force-multiplying program is named for Section 287(g)(1) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes ICE to delegate specified immigration officer functions to state and local law enforcement officials under the agency’s direction and supervision.

“I’ve insisted that Florida be the tip of the spear when it comes to state support of federal immigration enforcement. The success of Operation Tidal Wave is proof of our commitment,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Florida is proud to work closely with the Trump administration and help deliver on the 2024 mandate from America that our borders be secured and our immigration laws be followed. We will continue to engage in broad interior enforcement efforts. Thank you to DHS, ICE, CBP, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol, and Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Commission, Florida National Guard, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, and everyone involved for your contributions to this effort.”

“Dangerous criminals have no place in our country. We will apply CBP’s collective intelligence and operational capabilities to target those here illegally who endanger our citizens and the American way of life,” said Miami Sector Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Dinise. “Collaborative enforcement efforts such as Operation Tidal Wave, with our DHS and state of Florida law enforcement partners, leverages each of our unique authorities to protect against threats. We look forward to continuing the vital partnership with the State of Florida as we all work toward our shared goal of keeping our communities safe and our nation secure.”

During the operation, federal, state and local partners helped arrest criminal illegal aliens around Florida. ICE used field office resources, alongside federal partners, to identify priority targets for enforcement action. Law enforcement partners included ICE Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, the DEA, the ATF and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The state of Florida, under DeSantis’ direction, provided significant assistance during the statewide operation from multiple agencies.

In addition, the following sheriff’s offices also provided significant assistance to ICE during the operation:

    • Alachua County.
    • Baker County.
    • Brandford County.
    • Brevard County.
    • Clay County.
    • Hernando County.
    • Hillsborough County.
    • Indian River County.
    • Orange County.
    • Pinellas County.
    • St. John’s County.
    • Sumter County.
    • Volusia County.

Many of the criminal aliens arrested during the operation have illegally entered and been removed from the U.S. numerous times and been convicted of multiple criminal offenses. A few of the most egregious examples include:

    • Ciro Ramon Castaneda Perez, a criminal illegal alien from Venezuela, and known member of the violent gang Tren de Aragua, was arrested at his residence in Holly Hill. On April 12, the Port Orange Police Department pulled over Castaneda-Perez for a traffic violation and found cocaine residue and paraphernalia in his vehicle. Castaneda-Perez has a final order of removal issued by an immigration judge.
    • Carlos Eduardo Perez Perez, a criminal illegal alien and suspected associate of the gang Tren de Aragua, was arrested April 25 at the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Tampa field office. On July 19, 2024, Perez was first encountered and arrested by U.S. Border Patrol at a checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, Texas, after he illegally entered the U.S. without parole or inspection. An immigration judge ordered Perez removed to Venezuela Aug. 26, 2024.
    • Rafael Juarez Cabrera, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala and documented MS-13 gang member, was arrested after being convicted of illegal reentry by a previously removed alien. He has been removed three times prior. He will remain in custody pending prosecution for illegal reentry after deportation
    • Luis Melito Gonzalez Arrellanno, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico and active member of the Brown Pride Aztecas gang, was arrested with a criminal history that includes armed carjacking, firing a weapon, fraud and a conviction for illegal reentry after deportation. He has a final order of removal.
    • Aron Isaak Morazan Izaguirre, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, is an active known or suspected terrorist as a member of the 18th Street Gang. Izaguirre is a two-time illegal reentry and will remain in custody pending removal.
    • Miguel Rodriguez Gonzalez, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, is an active member of the Barrio Azteca gang. His criminal history includes assault, burglary, possession of marijuana, fraud and a conviction of illegal reentry after deportation. He will be held in custody pending his removal from the country.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Lame Deer Man Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Trafficking Methamphetamine on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation

Source: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) State Crime Alerts (c)

BILLINGS – A Lame Deer man who distributed methamphetamine on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation was sentenced today to 24 months in prison to be followed by 6 years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said.

Shannon Tyrone Seminole, 50, pleaded guilty in October 2024 to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters presided.

The government alleged in court documents that in the spring of 2022, law enforcement received reports that Shannon Seminole was selling methamphetamine on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Agents arranged two controlled purchases from Seminole, one in December 2022 and the other in September 2023. Following the second buy, agents executed a search of Seminole’s residence. During the search, agents seized an airsoft pistol and an AR-15 upper receiver and bolt.

In an interview, Seminole admitted to providing methamphetamine to the many drug users that helped him with his work. He admitted selling methamphetamine starting when he was released from jail three years prior. His source provided him with a regular supply of meth that he would sell. Seminole also admitted he carried firearms when selling drugs.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Patten prosecuted the case, and the investigation was conducted by the FBI.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results. • MIL-OSI Canada: Attorney general’s statement on Asian Heritage Month

Source: Government of Canada regional news

Niki Sharma, Attorney General, has released the following statement in celebration of Asian Heritage Month:

“Each May, people in British Columbia come together to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honour the many diverse communities of Asian descent who call our province home. I am heartbroken that this year’s festivities began in tragedy, with the brutal act of violence at last weekend’s Lapu Lapu Day event in Vancouver.

“Our sense of grief over this senseless, horrific incident is only made more profound by the fact that Filipinos have given so much to B.C. From law and politics to health care, education and entrepreneurship, Filipinos have been integral in shaping the culture of our province. We are proud to be home to the second-largest Filipino diaspora in the country.

“The response we have already seen from people in British Columbia to this tragedy reminds us of the core message of Asian Heritage Month, resiliency. From East to South Asia, from Southeast Asia to the Middle East, people of Asian heritage have contributed immeasurably to the social, cultural, economic and political landscape of B.C.

“Chinese workers helped build our railways, Filipinos have been the backbone of our health-care system, Japanese Canadian families on the coast were pivotal to our fishing industries, South Asian farmers have kept us nourished – the list goes on. Most importantly, our ancestors did all of this in the face of tragedy, systemic discrimination, colonial policies, internment and racial violence.

“Let us honour their memories and efforts by recommitting ourselves to building a province where everyone, regardless of race, background or heritage, can live with dignity, in safety and have equal opportunity. Let us take our cue from those before us who never wavered in their commitment to building community, advocating for justice and believing in a better future, no matter what obstacle they faced.

“Let us not only honour the past but look forward, with hope and resolve. Happy Asian Heritage Month, B.C.”
