ULAN BATOR, July 8 (Xinhua) — A total of 50 marmots have been recently reintroduced in eastern Mongolia’s Dornod province, the provincial Department of Environment and Tourism said Tuesday.

“This step is part of the country’s efforts to maintain ecological balance, reduce soil degradation and combat desertification, and restore degraded pastures,” the department said in a statement.

Marmots living in Mongolia are represented by two species – the gray marmot and the Siberian marmot /tarbagan/. The habitat of these species covers an area of about 235 thousand square kilometers, which is 15.6 percent of the entire territory of Mongolia. –0–

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 8 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Monday that China is ready to work with the international community to achieve a speedy recovery of the global economy.

Li Qiang made the remarks during a meeting with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS summit.

World trade has undergone significant changes with the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, which has seriously affected the international economic and trade order and created serious challenges for the world economy and the development of countries, Li Qiang said.

Against this backdrop, the international community is increasingly calling for the protection of the multilateral trading system and placing increasing hopes on the WTO to play a more active role, he added.

Noting that economic globalization is an irreversible trend of history, Li Qiang said China will, as always, continue to practice and safeguard multilateralism and free trade, actively support the reform and development of the WTO to restore its authority, speed up the improvement of trade rules, and push for more concrete results from the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference.

Li Qiang noted that China has abundant resources and means to counter adverse external influences, and is confident and capable of promoting sustainable and healthy economic development.

This year, China has implemented more proactive and effective macroeconomic policies, advanced the strategy of expanding domestic demand and launched special initiatives to boost consumption, he said, noting the huge growing demand driven by a super-large market of more than 1.4 billion consumers.

China, Li Qiang added, will take further measures for voluntary and unilateral opening-up, strictly abide by the principles and market rules of the WTO, and continue to share development opportunities with other countries to bring positive energy to the world. -0-

Foreign Minister Lin hosts welcome luncheon for Polish parliamentary delegation led by Deputy Horbatowski, announces Taiwan to open market to fresh blueberries from Poland

    Date:2025-07-01
    Data Source:Department of European Affairs

    July 1, 2025
    No. 227

On July 1, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung hosted a luncheon for visiting deputies of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland—Łukasz Horbatowski, Marek Chmielewski, and Iwona Krawczyk—who also serve on the Polish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Group. The two sides exchanged views on issues such as bilateral relations, economic and trade cooperation, and cultural exchanges.

In his remarks, Minister Lin pointed out that the Polish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Group was the largest group of its kind in the Sejm. He thanked members of the Polish parliament for their long-term support of Taiwan through concrete actions. Minister Lin said that cooperation between Taiwan and Poland in economics, trade, higher education, judicial matters, technology, and other domains had continued to deepen in recent years. He expressed hope that, building on the existing foundations, the two countries would further work together to strengthen interactions and exchanges.

Furthermore, Minister Lin announced that Taiwan had recently approved the import of fresh blueberries from Poland. Once final administrative procedures were completed, he said, the people of Taiwan would have the opportunity to enjoy high-quality Polish blueberries, benefiting both Polish farmers and Taiwanese consumers. Minister Lin also noted that Taiwan possessed a world-leading ICT sector while Poland had outstanding professional talent and production capacity, which presented opportunities for bilateral collaboration in artificial intelligence, drones, and advanced chips. Minister Lin said he looked forward to continued collaboration between the two countries to build resilient and democratic non-red supply chains.

Mr. Horbatowski, who was visiting Taiwan for the first time, expressed his appreciation for Minister Lin’s invitation and said that he was impressed with Taiwan’s advanced political and economic development. He added that Poland, as a major exporter of agricultural products, welcomed Taiwan’s decision to approve fresh blueberry imports and added that he looked forward to continued cooperation in the agricultural and high-tech sectors to enhance the welfare of the people of both countries.

Taiwan and Poland share the universal values of freedom and democracy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to promote cooperation between the two nations in various fields so as to deepen their resilient partnership, create sustainable prosperity and well-being for the people of Taiwan and Poland, and uphold their hard-earned democratic achievements. • MIL-Evening Report: Interest rates are on hold at 3.85%, as the Reserve Bank opts for caution over mortgage relief

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Stella Huangfu, Associate Professor, School of Economics, University of Sydney

    Thurtell/Getty Images

The Reserve Bank of Australia has kept the cash rate at 3.85%, after cutting it in February and May.

Those earlier moves were aimed at supporting the economy as growth slowed and inflation eased. This time, however, the bank chose to pause, signalling a more cautious stance.

The decision will be hard for the millions of mortgage holders and aspiring home owners who were hoping for a cut.

But as the bank’s monetary policy board explained:

the board judged that it could wait for a little more information to confirm that inflation remains on track to reach 2.5% on a sustainable basis.

The decision surprised many. Financial markets had priced in a 90% chance of a rate cut and the big four banks – ANZ, Westpac, Commonwealth and NAB – had forecast an easing in July.

On Tuesday afternoon Treasurer Jim Chalmers, would not be drawn on whether the bank had made the right decision but did say:

it was not the result millions of Australians were hoping for or what the market was expecting.

By holding steady, the bank is signalling it is not yet fully convinced inflation is returning to target and is prepared to wait for further evidence before cutting again.

The bank also cautioned that uncertainty in the world economy remains elevated, with the final scope of trade tariffs yet to play out.

    What’s behind this surprise decision?

The economy grew just 0.2% in the March quarter, with annual growth slowing to 1.3%. This was well below trend and even weaker than the 0.6% pace recorded in the December quarter. The data points to a clear loss of momentum.

Consumer spending has also remained soft. Retail sales rose only 0.2% in May, following flat or falling results in the two previous months.

Food spending declined, and sales of household goods were unchanged. Many households are still feeling the squeeze from high interest rates, rising living costs, and low confidence in the economy.

Inflation has continued to ease. May’s inflation figures showed headline inflation falling to 2.1%, while the Reserve Bank’s preferred trimmed mean – dropped to 2.4% – the lowest since late 2021.

The trimmed mean is a measure of underlying inflation that excludes the most extreme price changes (both increases and decreases) in the consumer price index basket to give a clearer picture of inflation trends.

Price pressures have eased across both goods and services, with no signs of wage-driven or second-round inflation taking hold.

Despite this, the bank decided to pause. While inflation is generally in line with its forecasts, the bank noted:

the June quarter CPI [consumer price index] figures were slightly stronger than expected at the margin.

With rates already cut twice this year and broader economic conditions evolving as expected, the Reserve Bank judged it could wait for more data before making its next move.

    What happens next?

Markets still expect two more cuts this year – in August and November – which would bring the cash rate down to 3.35% by the end of 2025. But this depends on how inflation, wages and the job market evolve.

Wage growth is slowing. Private sector wages rose 3.3% over the year to March, the slowest pace since mid-2022.

The unemployment rate stayed at 4.1% in May, with little change in how many people are working or looking for jobs. The job market is still solid, but signs of slowing are emerging.

The Reserve Bank is likely to move carefully. While inflation pressures have eased, the board wants to be sure prices stay within its 2 to 3% target band. It’s also keeping an eye on the housing market. Home prices rose 0.4% in June and are now up 4.6% over the year.

That renewed strength, helped by earlier rate cuts and limited supply, could make future decisions more complicated.

    Global conditions still matter

As the monetary policy board noted, “uncertainty in the world economy remains elevated”. Slowing global growth and fragile trade conditions are adding to the complexity of the bank’s task.

In Europe, economic growth is expected to reach just 0.9% this year, well below historical norms.

China’s recovery also remains uneven, despite authorities targeting 5% growth. Weak private investment and ongoing challenges in the property sector continue to weigh on momentum.

Meanwhile, global trade has stalled. The World Trade Organization expects trade volumes to fall 0.2% this year as tensions and tariffs continue to disrupt supply chains. Ongoing trade threats between the United States and China are also hurting investment and weighing on key Australian exports like resources and education.

Tuesday’s decision to hold the cash rate steady highlights the Reserve Bank’s cautious approach in a shifting economic environment.

Growth is soft, inflation has eased back within the target band, and household spending remains under pressure. But with inflation data slightly stronger than expected, the bank is choosing to wait for more confirmation before cutting again.

This isn’t a change in direction – it’s a pause for more information. The message remains clear: the Reserve Bank is prepared to act, but only when the data warrant it.

  • US restores $6.8 million aid for Tibetans, State Department says

    Source: Government of India (4)

The United States has restored $6.8 million in funding for Tibetans in South Asia, the U.S. State Department told Reuters on Tuesday, confirming comments by Tibet’s government-in-exile.

The aid had been cut by President Donald Trump’s administration as part of its “America First” policy that hit a number of programmes, including those aimed at securing food and preventing the spread of HIV in some of the world’s poorest regions.

Last week, the leader of the Tibetan government in-exile in India, Penpa Tsering said Tibetans became “collateral damage” in U.S. foreign aid cuts, and the funding had since been restored. He was speaking on the sidelines of the 90th birthday celebration of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

“The (State) Department re-instated $6.8 million in aid for Tibetans in South Asia,” a spokesperson said in response to a query from Reuters by e-mail, without saying when the funding was restored.

The U.S. has called on China to cease what it describes as interference in the succession of the 14th Dalai Lama, who fled from Tibet in 1959 in the wake of a failed uprising against Chinese rule and took shelter in India. China has said that the succession will have to be approved by its leaders.

“The United States has had a decades-long, bipartisan commitment to support and help advance the dignity and human rights of Tibetans, as well as help Tibetans preserve their distinct religious, cultural, and linguistic identity,” the State Department spokesperson added.

Vladivostok, July 8 (Xinhua) — The air temperature in Vladivostok, the administrative center of Russia’s Primorsky Krai, reached 31 degrees on Monday, a historical maximum since 1973, Primhydromet reported on its Telegram channel.

“Yesterday in Vladivostok the weather was partly cloudy. The high temperature was easily tolerated due to the low humidity of 40%. The maximum temperature reached the historical maximum of 1973 at plus 31 degrees, but did not exceed it,” the report says.

Temperature records in Vladivostok were broken on June 27, July 4 and 6. Forecasters noted that the reason for the unusual heat was the development of the La Niña phenomenon, which began to actively manifest itself in the Pacific Ocean in early spring.

In Primorsky Krai, over the past two weeks, particularly hot weather has been observed, with air temperatures 7 degrees above the average climatic value. –0–

  • Indian markets open cautiously higher amid Trump tariff concerns; IT and banking stocks lead gains

Indian stock markets opened on a cautious note on Tuesday as investors weighed fresh tariff measures announced by US President Donald Trump. While concerns lingered, traders appeared to adopt a “wait and watch” approach, looking for more clarity on the evolving situation.

Around 9:30 am, the Sensex was trading 91.57 points, or 0.11 per cent higher, at 83,534.07, while the Nifty 50 rose 22.25 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 25,483.55.

Buying interest was seen in IT, PSU banks and financial services stocks. Analysts noted that while the US announced unilateral tariffs on 14 countries, India’s exclusion from the list has fuelled expectations of an imminent trade agreement between India and the US.

“This has already been largely priced in by the market. The focus now shifts to the details, especially any sector-specific tariffs that could impact segments like pharmaceuticals. The market’s reaction will hinge on these finer points,” said Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

In the previous session, the Nifty had ended marginally higher, forming a green candlestick that followed a bullish hammer pattern — a positive technical signal, according to market watchers.

“A sustained move above 25,500 could open the door for a further rally towards 25,750. On the downside, immediate support levels are seen at 25,222 and 25,120, which could act as fresh entry points for long positions,” said Mandar Bhojane, Technical Analyst at Choice Broking.

In early trade, the Nifty Bank index climbed 203 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 57,152.20. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was up 91 points, or 0.15 per cent, at 59,606.75, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 85.70 points, or 0.45 per cent, to reach 19,035.85.

Within the Sensex pack, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eternal, Tata Motors, BEL, Adani Ports, NTPC, Asian Paints and UltraTech Cement were among the top gainers. On the flip side, Titan, HCL Tech, Bharti Airtel, M&M and Sun Pharma were trading in the red.

On the institutional front, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 321.16 crore on July 7, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased shares worth Rs 1,853.39 crore on the same day, reflecting continued domestic support.

In broader Asian markets, Seoul, Hong Kong, Japan, China and Jakarta were trading in positive territory, while Bangkok was the only key market in the region trading lower.

Overnight in the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 422.17 points, or 0.94 per cent lower, at 44,406.36. The S&P 500 lost 49.37 points, or 0.79 per cent, to settle at 6,229.98, and the Nasdaq dropped 188.59 points, or 0.92 per cent, ending at 20,412.52.

“This has already been largely factored in by the market; the unknown element is the possibility of fresh sectoral tariffs on segments like pharmaceuticals. The market’s reaction will depend on the details,” said Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

In the previous session, the Nifty closed marginally higher, forming a green candlestick that confirmed a bullish hammer pattern from the session before, according to analysts.

  • China warns Trump on tariffs, threatens retaliation on supply chain deals

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

China warned the Trump administration on Tuesday against reigniting trade tension by restoring tariffs on its goods next month, and threatened to retaliate against nations that strike deals with the United States to cut China out of supply chains.

Washington and Beijing agreed to a trade framework in June that restored a fragile truce, but with many details still unclear, traders and investors on both sides of the Pacific are watching to see if it will unravel or lead to a lasting detente.

On Monday, President Donald Trump began notifying trade partners of sharply higher U.S. tariffs from August 1, after he delayed all but 10% of his April duties on most countries to give them time to strike deals with the world’s largest economy.

China, initially singled out with tariffs exceeding 100%, has until August 12 to reach an agreement with the White House to keep Trump from reinstating additional import curbs imposed during tit-for-tat tariff exchanges in April and May.

“One conclusion is abundantly clear: dialogue and cooperation are the only correct path,” the official People’s Daily said in a commentary, referring to the exchanges in the current round of China-U.S. trade tension.

The article was signed “Zhong Sheng”, or “Voice of China”, a term the paper uses to express views on foreign policy.

Reiterating Beijing’s view that Trump’s tariffs amount to “bullying”, the paper added, “Practice has proven that only by firmly upholding principled positions can one truly safeguard one’s legitimate rights and interests.”

The remarks set the stage for another round of tariff war should Trump stick to what the ruling Communist Party’s official daily said was “a so-called ‘final deadline.’”

The average U.S. tariff on Chinese exports now stands at 51.1%, while the average Chinese duty on U.S. goods is 32.6%, with both sides covering all their trade, the Peterson Institute for International Economics said.

The paper also took a swipe at regional economies that are considering striking tariff reduction deals with the United States that cut China out of their supply chains.

Last week, Vietnam secured a tariff reduction to 20% from 46% with a deal for goods “transshipped” through it, typically originating from China, to be subjected to a levy of 40%.

“China firmly opposes any side striking a deal that sacrifices Chinese interests in exchange for tariff concessions,” the paper said.

“If such a situation arises, China will not accept it and will respond resolutely to protect its legitimate interests.”

Echoes of Marco Polo Bridge: China’s unforgettable contributions to World Anti-Fascist War victory

Students attend a ceremony to mark the 88th anniversary of the start of the entire nation’s resistance against Japanese aggression, in Beijing, capital of China, on July 7, 2025. (Xinhua/Cai Yang)

For the Chinese people, the July 7th Incident in 1937 remains as unforgettable an episode of World War II (WWII) as Nazi Germany’s Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland or Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor is for Westerners.

Eighty-eight years ago, on that very day in July, Japanese troops attacked the Chinese garrison at Lugou Bridge, also known as Marco Polo Bridge, located in what is now the Fengtai District of Beijing, under the pretext of searching for a missing Japanese soldier.

While Japan’s aggression against China began as early as 1931, the July 7th Incident marked its escalation into a full-scale invasion and the start of China’s nationwide resistance.

No less heinous than fascist war crimes in Europe, such as the killing of at least 1.1 million people by Nazi forces in the Auschwitz concentration camp, Japanese troops inflicted a series of atrocities on innocent Chinese people in the course of their invasion.

On Dec. 13, 1937, following the capture of then Chinese capital Nanjing, Japanese troops began more than 40 days of slaughter. About 300,000 civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally murdered and over 20,000 women raped.

However, a more united and unyielding China emerged from the burning ashes and rubble caused by Japanese bombardment and gunfire. United as one under the banner of the Chinese united front against Japanese aggression, which was advocated and established by the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people launched a relentless struggle against the brutal Japanese militarists.

Even in the face of death and destruction, China still strove to preserve its intellectual and cultural vitality. Scholars and students relocated from Japanese-occupied territories to China’s remote southwest, where they rebuilt top-tier institutions, such as the National Southwestern Associated University.

China was not alone in this anti-fascist struggle. In the darkest hours of the war, the Soviet Volunteer Group, part of the Soviet Air Force, came to Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing to fight alongside the Chinese people. Many sacrificed their lives during aerial combat.

In 1941, the American Volunteer Group, famously known as the Flying Tigers for its winged-tiger emblem, was formed to assist the Chinese Air Force. With a 2,000-plus death toll, these pilots shot down over 2,600 Japanese fighter planes and opened up the Hump Route for transporting emergency supplies.

In 1942, the Chinese Expeditionary Force, comprising over 100,000 soldiers, was dispatched to Myanmar and India to fight Japanese forces alongside the Allies. During the mission, nearly half of the Chinese soldiers were killed or injured. It strongly supported and coordinated with the Allied campaigns against Japan, as well as the anti-Japanese resistance of the Southeast Asian people.

Doubtlessly, China played an indispensable role in the World Anti-Fascist War, and their fight started the earliest and lasted the longest. During 14 years of resistance from 1931 to 1945, China engaged and tied down more than two-thirds of Japan’s ground forces — resulting in over 70 percent of Japan’s wartime military casualties.

This monumental effort greatly supported the United States and the United Kingdom in the Pacific, and enabled the Soviet Union to concentrate on its campaign against Nazi Germany without fear of a Japanese assault from the East.

However, China’s sacrifice was also staggering. Of the more than 100 million casualties in the global war against fascism, over 35 million were Chinese soldiers and civilians.

About four months after Victory in Europe Day, Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945 — marking the end of WWII.

Following the Allied victory, China actively participated in founding the United Nations (UN) and building the post-war international order. China was among the first to sign the UN Charter, which enshrines the principle of sovereign equality and affirms that all nations, irrespective of size, strength or wealth, are equal. That became the cornerstone of the post-war international order.

Through its contributions and sacrifices during the war, China earned its status as a victorious nation of WWII and a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Therefore, the rights China holds as a WWII victor should be respected and not challenged, especially concerning Taiwan’s restoration to China, which was an integral part of the post-war international order.

To remember the struggle of past generations is not to perpetuate hatred, but to create a better future for generations to come. Humanity must learn from WWII, resolutely oppose all forms of hegemony and power politics, and firmly uphold the post-war international order — with the UN at its core.

Today, amid a complex and turbulent international landscape, it is all the more essential to uphold and defend the authority of the UN, firmly uphold the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and steadily promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Monday that China stands ready to work with the international community to get the world economy back on track at an early date.

Li made the remarks when meeting with Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit.

The global trade has undergone significant changes with rising unilateralism and protectionism, which has severely impacted the international economic and trade order and posed grave challenges to the world economy and countries’ development, said Li.

Against this backdrop, the international community has a stronger call for safeguarding the multilateral trading system and has growing expectations for the WTO to play a more active role, he added.

Noting that economic globalization is an irreversible trend of history, Li said that China will, as always, continue to practice and safeguard multilateralism and free trade, actively support the reform and development of the WTO to restore its authority, accelerate the improvement of trade rules, and push for more concrete outcomes of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference.

Li said China has abundant resources and means to counter adverse external impacts, and is confident in and capable of promoting a steady and healthy economic development.

This year, China has implemented more proactive and effective macro policies, advanced the strategy of expanding domestic demand, and launched special initiatives to boost consumption, he said, noting the huge, growing demand unleashed by the super-large market of over 1.4 billion consumers.

China, Li added, will introduce more measures for voluntary and unilateral opening up, strictly abide by the principles and market rules of the WTO, and continue to share development opportunities with other countries, so as to inject positive energy into the world.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) — As a refrigerated truck smoothly entered the Xunke Port, the border crossing witnessed a historic moment: the first 12 tons of frozen Russian chum salmon cleared customs. The event marks the first time chilled fish products have been imported into Xunke County, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, marking a major step in the high-quality development of border trade with Russia.

According to local newspaper Heilongjiang Daily, during the import of this batch of chum salmon, Xunke Customs provided support services at all stages, helping enterprises understand the procedures for importing fish. The entire process, from product registration and permit processing to customs declaration and cargo inspection, was completed efficiently with the assistance of customs officers, ensuring prompt and proper clearance of the products.

The imported chum salmon will be sent to the Imported Chilled Fishery Products Processing Park in Xunke County. After deep processing, the products will be put on the market in more diversified forms, increasing the added value and expanding the industrial chain in trade.

This year, Xunke County has been actively implementing the “Interaction between the checkpoint and the industrial zone” initiative, accelerating the formation of coordinated logistics between the border checkpoint and rear processing sites. The construction of the fish processing park in the economic development zone is progressing smoothly. The launch of the park will create a solid foundation for processing and increasing the added value of products.

The successful clearance of the first batch of fish products at customs has become a living embodiment of the deepening of trade and economic cooperation between Xunke and Russia. As the processing park is put into operation, the county’s competitiveness in trade with Russia will steadily increase, making a sustainable contribution to the high-quality development of the regional economy. -0-

HANGZHOU, July 8 (Xinhua) — As of the end of June this year, 3,716 foreign entrepreneurs in Yiwu City, east China’s Zhejiang Province, had been granted the status of skilled personnel under a new assessment system launched by the local government. Among them, 37 were classified as Category A (foreign highly skilled personnel) and 3,679 as Category B (foreign professional specialists), according to the Yiwu City Science and Technology Administration.

Yiwu has pioneered the creation of an innovative “foreign talent contribution evaluation system,” with key criteria including annual exports, job creation for local residents, and sustainable contribution to the regional economy.

MINSK, July 8 (Xinhua) — The role of BRICS as a pillar of the multipolar world is becoming critically important, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov said in Rio de Janeiro during an extended session of the 17th BRICS summit. The corresponding information was published by the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

In his speech, M. Ryzhenkov noted that modern global challenges require not only strengthening of internal potential, but also a truly multilateral approach in international affairs.

“Belarus sees the practical embodiment of this ideology in BRICS – an association based on equality, mutual respect and the search for collective solutions. Today, when outdated unipolar mechanisms demonstrate their ineffectiveness and politicization, the role of BRICS as a support for a multipolar world, as a foundation and an integral part of a fair world order is becoming critically important,” the minister emphasized.

He also noted that the New Development Bank is the most important element of the emerging financial architecture of BRICS. Belarus sent an official request to join its members in March of this year.

“Belarus’ geopolitical position in Eurasia opens up broad prospects for cooperation in logistics. Belarus is ready to become a platform for creating modern logistics hubs, where advanced technologies, including blockchain and the Internet of Things, will be used to build transparent and efficient supply chains,” the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry noted. -0-

A fire broke out on Monday inside a telecommunication building in the Egyptian capital Cairo, injuring 14 people, causing a partial disruption of telecommunication and internet services in the Greater Cairo metropolitan area.

The injured were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment, the Egyptian Health Ministry said in a statement.

The official MENA news agency reported that firefighters have successfully contained the fire in the Ramses Central Exchange building, adding that cooling operations are currently underway to ensure the fire will not reignite.

A security source told MENA that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit, noting that criminal lab experts will collect evidence from the scene to determine the exact cause.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said that work is underway to assess the extent of the damage and gradually restore service.
