    The Dalai Lama said on Wednesday that a non-profit that he has founded will have the sole authority to recognise his future reincarnation, countering China’s insistence that it will choose the successor of the Tibetan spiritual leader.

    The remarks by the leader, who turns 90 on Sunday, came during a week of celebrations to mark his birthday. There was no immediate comment from China.

    Beijing views the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, as a separatist. The Dalai Lama has previously said his successor will be born outside China and urged his followers to reject anyone chosen by Beijing.

    “I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue,” the Dalai Lama said in a statement.

    He added that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the non-profit that he set up to maintain and support the tradition and institution of the Dalai Lama, has the sole authority to recognise his future reincarnation in consultation with the heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

    “They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition … no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” the Dalai Lama said.

    “Muscovites have won prizes in creative competitions in Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Spain, China, Cyprus, the Netherlands, the USA, Switzerland and other countries: a total of 10,000 awards and incentive prizes, including more than 280 Grand Prix,” said Sergei Sobyanin.

    In addition, students from Moscow art schools have won more than 16 thousand awards at all-Russian and regional competitions and festivals, which sometimes significantly exceed international projects in terms of the number of participants.

    On a monthly basis, inflation was 0.19 percent, and the consumer price index rose from 108.07 in May to 108.27 in June.

    ZAGREB, July 2 (Xinhua) — Western leaders should resume dialogue with Russia to help end the conflict in Ukraine, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said Tuesday after talks with Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini in Zagreb.

    “There is no excuse for not having a dialogue,” Z. Milanovic noted at a joint press conference, adding that even during the Soviet era, negotiations were conducted between the West and the Soviet Union.

    HAIKOU, July 2 (Xinhua) — South China’s island province of Hainan on Tuesday launched a campaign to promote summer tourism, providing 40 million yuan (about 5.59 million U.S. dollars) in subsidies to spur consumption during the tourist season, local authorities said.

    According to the Hainan Provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, the campaign will run from July to September and will provide targeted subsidies for travel to and from the province, accommodation, meals, and tickets to tourist attractions.

    Tourists can upload receipts to prove their spending on dedicated online platforms. Subsidized funds ranging from 150 to 3,060 yuan will be returned directly to travelers’ personal bank accounts.

    This summer, Hainan is expected to host more than 100 cultural, tourism and sports events, including festivals, live performances and sports competitions, showcasing the island’s diverse charms.

    Hainan Island, famous for its year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, is looking to revitalize its tourism industry. China aims to turn the province into a global tourist and consumer destination by 2035.

    By the end of 2024, Hainan’s total tourist flow, including both domestic and foreign tourists, exceeded 97.2 million person-times, up 8 percent from the previous year. According to official data from the above-mentioned department, total tourism spending in the province last year increased by 12.5 percent, reaching 204 billion yuan.

  • Indian stock market opens higher, IT stocks shine

    The Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Wednesday amid positive global cues, with buying seen in the IT and auto sectors during early trade.

    At around 9:23 am, the Sensex was trading 225.5 points or 0.27 per cent higher at 83,922.79, while the Nifty added 58.75 points or 0.23 per cent to reach 25,600.55.

    According to analysts, after breaking out of the 24,500–25,000 range, the Nifty has moved into a new range of 25,200–25,800.

    Positive news about a possible trade deal between India and the US could help the index break the upper limit of this range, but sustaining the Nifty at higher levels may prove challenging, they added.

    Nifty Bank was down 45.20 points or 0.08 per cent at 57,414.25 in early trade. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was trading at 59,809.25 after gaining 59.20 points or 0.25 per cent. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index was at 19,082.10 after rising 26.40 points or 0.14 per cent.

    “The charts of Bank Nifty indicate that it may find support at 57,300, followed by 57,000 and 56,800. If the index advances further, 57,650 would be the initial key resistance, followed by 57,800 and 58,000,” said Hardik Matalia, Derivatives Analyst at Choice Broking.

    In the Sensex pack, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, TCS, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, HCL Tech and Adani Ports were the top gainers. Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, BEL and Eternal were among the top losers.

    Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling on July 1, offloading equities worth Rs 1,970.14 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued their buying, purchasing equities worth Rs 771.08 crore on the same day.

    In Asian markets, Bangkok, China, Japan, Seoul and Jakarta were trading in the red, while only Hong Kong was trading in the green.

    In the previous trading session, the Dow Jones in the US closed at 44,494.94, up 400.17 points or 0.91 per cent. The S&P 500 ended with a loss of 6.90 points or 0.11 per cent at 6,198.05, while the Nasdaq closed at 20,202.89, down 166.85 points or 0.82 per cent.

  • Quad ministers demand bringing Pahalgam terrorists to justice, renew commitment to counterterrorism

    Renewing their commitment to work together to fight terrorism, the Quad foreign ministers on Tuesday demanded that all those responsible for the “reprehensible” Pahalgam terror attack be immediately brought to justice and countries concerned cooperate with the authorities.

    In a joint statement after their meeting on Tuesday, they said, “We call for the perpetrators, organisers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN Member States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSCRs (Security Council Resolutions), to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard.”

    “The Quad unequivocally condemns all acts of terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism, and renews our commitment to counterterrorism cooperation,” the statement said.

    External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Foreign Ministers Penny Wong of Australia and Takeshi Iwaya of Japan representing the major democracies of the Indo-Pacific region met for their second ministerial meeting of the year.

    They said, “We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, while injuring several others. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and extend our heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery to all those injured.”

    Pyongyang has sent its citizens to fight on behalf of Russia in Ukraine.

    Closer to home, the ministers said they were “deeply concerned by the worsening crisis in Myanmar and its impact on the region.”

    They called on the military regime and all groups involved “to implement, extend and broaden ceasefire measures.”

    The Moscow metro is not only a popular means of public transport, but also a cultural venue for talented Muscovites. The project has been underway in the capital for nine years now “Music in the Metro”, and recently another project for creative people – “Art in the Metro”— celebrated its first anniversary.     Pandas on Michurinsky Prospekt

    Artist Yulia Ershova painted a passenger reading enthusiastically in a train car, sculptures of Romulus and Remus at the Rimskaya station, and flying seagulls on the ceiling of Mayakovskaya on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line. Another of her paintings depicts three pandas chewing bamboo at the Michurinsky Prospekt station on the Big Circle Line (BCL).

    “This is my favorite station. It is decorated in an oriental style: it has red columns and lamps with Chinese ornaments. I thought, what can you imagine in such an environment? Why not put pandas there, who came to

Yulia Ershova prefers to work in oil, but when she needs to make a quick sketch, she takes up watercolor.

    “The artist’s mission is to draw people’s attention to beauty that they may not notice in the rhythm of a big city. I remember a passenger on the Aminyevskaya BKL saw my work on an easel and at first could not understand where such beauty came from. And then she recognized the station ceiling. She often rides here, but did not notice how unusual it is, and now she looked up for the first time,” says Yulia Ershova.

    “Dostoevskaya” with salt and ink

    Another participant of the last season, Ekaterina Bulgakova, was inspired by the Dostoevskaya metro station of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line. The artist was struck by its marble slabs. She managed to convey their texture using a special technique.

    “To depict a marble pattern, I first began to combine acrylic paints, watercolors and the author’s technique “gallitika”. It uses ink and salt, which gives beautiful textured streaks. Now I plan to further develop this method of drawing,” says Ekaterina Bulgakova.

    During her year of participation in the project, she created about 20 works. The artist was especially inspired by the BKL stations. In her paintings, she depicted the art object “Moscow Rings”, located at the entrance to “Nizhegorodskaya”, and the interiors of “Khoroshevskaya”.

    “I also dedicated one of my works to passengers. I depicted a stream of people hurrying at the Kitay-Gorod station, wrote down their possible thoughts, and added an old map of the area. It turned out to be a collage. It is impossible to imagine the metro without passengers. People often even came up to watch me draw and asked questions. Someone admitted that they were 20 years old and it was boring to study in their chosen specialty. And someone wanted to learn to draw at 60. I supported them and said that it is not too late to start at any age,” the interviewee notes.

    The artist did not initially plan to engage in creative work either. She received a higher education in economics, then completed an internship with teachers from the Russian State University of Art and Industry named after S.G. Stroganov, graduated from the School of Design of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and began to paint. This year, she is preparing to capture the capital’s metro on canvas again.

    “The metro is developing at a rapid pace, but the new stations are not inferior to the old ones in terms of design. They are incredible. I am grateful to the project organizers for the fact that we can draw here,” shares Ekaterina Bulgakova.

    Walk through the tunnel and trains from different eras

    Project participant Ekaterina Gavrilova also considers the metro an invaluable source of ideas for paintings. The artist is fascinated by the architecture of the last century, so she is especially inspired by the very first stations and their design.

    “The main goal of the Art in the Metro project is to draw people’s attention to what surrounds them every day. For example, you can take a closer look at the doors of the Oktyabrskaya metro station. Every detail in their patterns is thought out, forming a single composition,” says Ekaterina Gavrilova.

    The interviewee of mos.ru has been drawing since childhood and was inspired by the works of Isaac Levitan, so she entered the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of Ilya Glazunov and successfully graduated from it. Ekaterina Gavrilova has been participating in the project since its inception. In the metro, she has created more than 20 works in a realistic style with elements of minimalism.     “Thanks to the project, we didn’t just go down to the metro to draw, but went to interesting and unusual events. And while working at Kievskaya, Ekaterina Gavrilova noticed two city women enthusiastically talking to each other. This scene formed the basis for the work “Morning News”.

    “The lobby of the Kyiv station is an atrium space framed by Corinthian capitals in a semicircle. The architects’ concept is a place for a temporary break from the road and meetings. The interior is pompous: columns, mosaics, gold. I think the space itself suggested the plot to me. The most wonderful thing in such walls is to engage in creativity. And passengers feel it. That is why the projects “Art in the Metro” and “Music in the Metro” have so many viewers,” the mos.ru interlocutor notes.

    Nikolay Bazunov also took part in the first season of the project. He found inspiration in metro trains.

    “I like the design of rolling stock from the 1940s to 1970s, which is attractive in its simplicity – smooth lines, round headlights. Thanks to my participation in the “Art in the Metro” project, I visited the Severnoye and Izmailovo depots, where I drew historical trains. I even managed to sit in the driver’s cabin of a retro train that runs on the Sokolnicheskaya line,” the artist says.

    Nikolay Bazunov associates the metro with the Great Patriotic War and memories of his relatives. During the bombing, his grandmother and mother hid at the Mayakovskaya station. The artist found a black-and-white photograph taken in 1941 and painted a picture for the anniversary of the Great Victory, where he depicted Muscovites hiding in the metro.

    “There is an interesting incident connected with this work. I was painting it at the Park Kultury station and stepped away for five minutes. I came back and there was a girl standing next to the painting and trying to make the image lighter with my brush. She explained that she found the work gloomy. And I smiled,” recalls Nikolai Bazunov.

    The artist prefers to work with oil on canvas. He compares his work to a musician’s performance. The palette is a turntable with discs, like a DJ’s, the brush is a conductor’s baton. While working, Nikolai Bazunov stands with his back to the passengers so that they can see his painting and express their opinion.

    “I have been participating in the Art in the Metro project since its inception, and have painted about 10 works. This season, I have joined it again not only as a participant, but also as a jury member. I help select artists.          It is learnt that the Government is exploring with other Mainland cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to take forward the development of “Zero Waste Bay Area”, and that Guangdong and Hong Kong will tackle waste management issues through regional strategies and enhance regional recycling of recyclable materials in the GBA by leveraging each other’s competitive advantages and complementing strengths. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council:
     
    (1) of the specific work directions and strategies of the Special Panel for Building “Zero Waste Bay Area” established by the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong in January this year, and the latest progress of its work;
     
    (2) given the opportunities arising from the “Zero Waste Bay Area”, how will the Government capitalise on Hong Kong’s advantage of connecting the country with the world to facilitate the development of green industries and a circular economy in the GBA, and whether it has assessed the difficulties and challenges that may arise in the process; if so, of the details; if not, the reasons for that; and

    (1) According to the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Ecological Environmental Protection Plan” promulgated by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government continuously works with the Mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to develop a “Zero Waste Bay Area” and explore regional co-operation models for achieving “Zero Waste City”. The Special Panel for Building “Zero Waste Bay Area” (the Special Panel) was established by Guangdong and Hong Kong at the Hong Kong-Guangdong Joint Working Group on Environmental Protection and Combating Climate Change meeting held in January this year, serving as a standing mechanism for advancing solid waste management and resources circulation co-operation between the two places, thereby strengthening policy co-ordination, technical exchanges and project collaboration, as well as elevating the capability in jointly handling solid waste.
     
         The first meeting of the Special Panel, held on March 27 this year, was co-chaired by the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government and the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province. It mainly focused on exploring strategies leveraging on the complementary advantages of the region, to promote resources circulation of recyclable materials in the GBA and foster collaborative development of green industries and related facilities through deepening the collaboration by a joint “project-based” model. At present, the Special Panel has commenced initial discussions on topics such as regional co-operation in resources circulation and waste management policy, and is actively discussing how to promote the co-ordination of regulations and market integration between the two places.
     
    (2) and (3) The co-operation direction with the Mainland cities of the GBA is to promote resources circulation through the joint development of “Zero Waste City”, instead of transferring the municipal solid waste (MSW) to the Mainland cities of the GBA for treatment.
     
         Under the co-operation framework of the Special Panel, Hong Kong will fully capitalise on our distinctive advantage of having strong support of the Motherland and being closely connected to the world to further deepen the co-operation with other Mainland cities of the GBA in areas such as developing a “Zero Waste City” and promoting resources circulation. Hong Kong will introduce advanced recycling technologies and large-scale industrial expertise from the Mainland on one hand; and integrate its international market environment with its mature environmental management system to jointly explore the development pathway of a regional circular economy on the other. For example, the paper pulping facility and the retired electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling facility currently under construction in EcoPark, Tuen Mun, both incorporate mature Mainland technologies to process local waste paper and retired EV batteries. This not only strengthens Hong Kong’s role in the regional green industry chain, but also fosters collaborative development of green technologies and mutually beneficial co-operation in the environmental industry of the GBA.
     
         As for the local treatment of MSW in Hong Kong, the HKSAR Government is pressing ahead with the development of a network of advanced and highly efficient modern waste-to-energy facilities. The first modern incineration facility for treating MSW currently under construction near Shek Kwu Chau, I∙PARK1, will commence operation within this year. In addition, the HKSAR Government is pushing forward the development of I∙PARK2 at full steam. The open tender for the project was invited in last December and will close on July 18 this year. We will seek funding from the Legislative Council for the project in a timely manner.

    SHANGHAI, July 2 (Xinhua) — The Yangtze River Delta region’s rail passenger traffic hit a record 455 million times in the first half of 2025, with an average daily passenger traffic of 2.51 million, up 4.6 percent year on year.

    According to the Shanghai branch of the state corporation China Railways (CR), the second quarter significantly surpassed the first quarter in terms of indicators, in particular, on May 1, a new record was set for daily passenger traffic – almost 4.27 million person-times.

    A sharp increase in the number of passengers was also observed during the Qingming (All Souls’ Day) and Duanwu (Dragon Boat Festival) holidays.

    China has ramped up efforts to protect and restore mining areas, emphasizing green, sustainable and high-quality development in the sector under a revised Mineral Resources Law that took effect on Tuesday.

    For the first time, the law includes a dedicated chapter on ecological restoration in mining areas at the national legislative level, Lu Lihua, deputy director-general of the land space ecological restoration department at the Ministry of Natural Resources, told a news conference on Friday.

    “This chapter outlines clear provisions for ecological restoration, providing a robust legal guarantee for systematically rebuilding the governance system for ecological restoration in these regions,” Lu said.

    The revised law, composed of 80 articles across eight chapters, modifies nearly every item to align with the new circumstances and requirements for mineral resources exploitation and protection, said Zhuang Xiaoyong, deputy director of the economic law department at the Legislative Affairs Commission of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee.

    The law requires the integration of natural and artificial restoration efforts in mining areas, following principles of adapting to local conditions, scientific planning, systematic management and reasonable utilization.

    Mining right holders are required to fulfill ecological restoration obligations if mining activities cause environmental damage, even after mining rights expire. In the event that mining areas are abandoned or the responsible party cannot be identified, local governments at or above the county level are responsible for organizing restorative work, with private sector participation encouraged.

    According to the amended law, before mineral extraction can take place, mining rights holders must submit a plan for ecological restoration that should include specific measures for tailings ponds, along with the mining plan for approval. Restoration should proceed concurrently with mining if possible, or within a reasonable period after mining activities conclude, Zhuang said.

    Local governments are tasked with strengthening coordination and supervision of ecological restoration, ensuring it aligns with pollution prevention, soil and water conservation, and vegetation restoration to improve environmental outcomes. Local natural resources departments are also responsible for supervising the allocation and use of restoration funds.

    Lu said the ministry is drafting guidelines to support the law’s implementation, focusing on technology-driven restorative approaches that are tailored to local conditions.

    Gutian county in Ningde, Fujian province, was among the first batch of exemplary cases of ecological restoration in mining regions announced by the ministry last year. The county used techniques such as subsequent filling mining and ore selection to enhance extraction efficiency, reduce tailings storage and minimize damage to surface vegetation.

    In Shandong province, sediment from the Yellow River was used to fill coal collapse areas, achieving a land reclamation rate of 100 percent, with potential restoration to farmland within one to three years.

    First enacted in 1986, the Mineral Resources Law was previously amended in 1996 and 2009 before its revision and adoption at the 12th session of the NPC Standing Committee last year.

    ZHENGZHOU, July 2 — Beneath the blazing midday sun in Zhangzhuangli Village, Qingfeng County, in central China’s Henan Province, an intelligent patrol drone soared into the sky, tracing graceful arcs against the clear blue backdrop.

    Below, driverless harvesters swept through golden wheat fields with surgical precision, funneling grain into waiting trucks, while nearby sensors activated smart irrigation systems to quench the soil’s thirst drop by drop.

    These scenes come from the first wheat harvest at Henan’s inaugural fully unmanned wheat-corn rotation farm, offering a glimpse into the future of agriculture in China.

    Designed by scientists at Henan Agricultural University as part of the “sci-tech backyard program,” this farm covering 3,500 mu, or about 233 hectares, in Qingfeng has turned a once-distant dream into reality by achieving fully unmanned plowing, planting, management and harvesting.

    “For generations, harvest meant the whole family sweating in the fields,” said Zhou Jianshi, head of the local agricultural machinery cooperative, as an autonomous harvester rumbled past. “Now these ‘iron workhorses’ do it all on their own. It’s simply amazing.”

    This summer, the farm deployed an army of intelligent machines — from driverless harvesters and tractors to air-suction seeders, precision irrigation systems and scouting drones — all operated through China’s domestically developed BeiDou navigation satellites.

    According to Zhou, the shift has brought dramatic efficiency gains. “With the autonomous system, we have been able to reduce harvesting time from seven days to four,” he said, adding that labor for water and fertilizer management dropped by 80 percent, while overall human costs fell by 40 percent.

    “But efficiency jumped by 30 percent compared to last year’s traditional methods,” he noted.

    Behind this transformation lies integrated automation, with robotic tillers preparing the soil, smart planters detecting missed seeds, drones monitoring crop health and pests, and AI coordinating the entire harvest.

    In the farm’s mission control room, giant screens flicker with real-time data on soil moisture, seedling density and pest alerts, painting a digital portrait of the fields.

    “Our drone patrol system collects field data at 10 points every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily,” said Wang Qiang, director of the Qingfeng sci-tech backyard program and an associate professor at Henan Agricultural University.

    “Predictive models translate the data into growth patterns, yield forecasts, and precise water needs,” Wang added.

    The smart irrigation system divides the fields into six zones, watering each according to the specific needs of the crops.

    Zhou said that irrigation labor fell 90 percent, with work that once needed 10 people now done by one using a smartphone, while precision fertilizer cut chemical use by 20 percent and boosted absorption efficiency by 30 percent.

    The results are inspiring, said Wang, noting that the smart farm’s debut report showed an impressive 20 percent increase in wheat yield compared to nearby conventional fields.

    “The core is matching water and fertilizer to the crop’s exact needs,” explained Ye Youliang, founder of the “sci-tech backyard program” and a professor at Henan Agricultural University.

    “Integrated water-fertilization systems allow us to deliver nutrients precisely when and where the plants need them, resulting in less input, higher quality, and truly sustainable farming,” he added.

    Standing amid the vibrant fields, Wang envisions a far-reaching transformation on the horizon.

    “Qingfeng offers a replicable model for China’s agricultural modernization,” he said. “Next, we’ll refine full-process unmanned tech, cut costs further, and amplify these efficiency gains.”

    Despite recent volatility in global trade policy, especially the swift changes in US-China tariff regulations since April, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port — the world’s third-largest in terms of container throughput volume in 2024 — has demonstrated remarkable resilience.

    By early June, container throughput volume to the United States had returned to pre-fluctuation levels, said port officials.

    Located on China’s eastern seaboard, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port serves as a vital artery in global logistics. With over 300 container shipping routes connecting to more than 600 ports, across 200 countries and regions, the port handles nearly 300 vessel movements daily. It has become a critical hub in supporting the dual circulation of domestic and international trade.

    In the face of external pressure, the port managed to expand its container throughput volume. From January to April, the port handled 13.568 million twenty-foot equivalent units, marking a 9.9 percent year-on-year increase, said Teng Yahui, deputy general manager of Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co Ltd.

    “Jurassic World Rebirth,” the latest installment in the dinosaur blockbuster franchise, is set to charge into Chinese theaters on July 2, with the director and cast generating excitement among fans at the film’s Shanghai premiere on June 29.

    Three years after the “Jurassic World” trilogy ended, the “Jurassic” series takes an inventive turn with a new film directed by Gareth Edwards from a script by original “Jurassic Park” (1993) screenwriter David Koepp and starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

    The story follows an extraction team that ventures to a dangerous island research facility from “Jurassic Park,” now inhabited by deadly dinosaurs. Their mission involves collecting DNA samples from three colossal prehistoric species on land, sea and air for a medical breakthrough.

    Director Edwards called making the film “a dream come true” at the premiere event packed with screaming fans. He appeared alongside Johansson, Bailey and Rupert Friend during the film’s China promotional tour. 

    “I think it is every director’s dream and also every director’s nightmare,” he said.

    Edwards grew up studying Steven Spielberg’s films in England, with “Jurassic Park” among the first movies he saw as a child. He said the film has inspired him ever since, though he believes no one can surpass Spielberg’s original work and never expected to do so. Edwards said he hopes “Jurassic World Rebirth” will feel like a forgotten sequel from the 1990s, capturing the original’s style.

    Spielberg has remained closely involved with the franchise, having directed the original “Jurassic Park” and its sequel, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” and serving as executive producer on every subsequent film, including “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Since 1993, the franchise based on Michael Crichton’s novel has created a cinematic world of reborn dinosaurs and heroes, reinvented the blockbuster film, revolutionized special effects and launched two trilogies that have grossed over $6 billion worldwide, including 4.61 billion yuan ($644 million) from China.

    “We had Steven Spielberg guiding this whole film,” Edwards revealed. “He was watching everything we were filming every day, and as a filmmaker, that’s very nerve-racking. Sometimes we’d get a nice text, and I’d share it with the group when he said he loved what he’d seen, and that’s awesome.”

    Johansson said participating in “Jurassic World Rebirth” fulfilled “a childhood dream of mine.” She recalled that one of her earliest theater memories was watching “Jurassic Park” and that she had followed the franchise for 15 years, reaching out each time a new film was announced, though previous attempts had not worked out. The action superstar added that she told Spielberg she would accept any role in the “Jurassic” franchise — even playing what she called a “dinosnack” who gets eaten five minutes in.

    But this time, Johansson landed something far more substantial. Cast as Zora Bennett, she plays a covert operations expert contracted to lead a team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material. She and her team uncover a sinister discovery hidden for decades on the dinosaur island.

    To bring the story to life, the cast and crew went far beyond green screens, filming in natural locations across the U.K., Malta and Thailand. Along the way, they encountered wild animals from snakes and monkeys to poisonous insects.

    The director recalled going to a mangrove swamp in Thailand. Although everyone assured him it was safe, the crew still hired a snake wrangler just in case. Sure enough, the wrangler emerged with a giant yellow-and-black poisonous snake. “I said everybody has to make a promise right now that we’re not going to tell Scarlett Johansson until the film is finished,” Edwards said.

    Hearing this for the first time on stage, Johansson turned to the director and deadpanned, “I trusted you, Gareth, and I no longer trust you.”

    “The adventure of a lifetime!” Friend exclaimed.

    The exhibition, themed “Forging the Shanghai Spirit,” aims to highlight the vibrant art scenes of SCO member countries and promote the vision of a global community of shared future. It will run through July 6.

    The exhibition showcases works that blend local cultures with contemporary themes. Some Chinese artists drew inspiration from cultural figures of other member countries, turning mutual respect and cultural exchange into tangible art pieces.

    The event is co-hosted by China International Communications Group, the National Art Museum of China, and the SCO Secretariat. Undertaking organizations include China Pictorial Publications, the Administrative Committee of China-SCO Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Area, The Chinese Urban Sculpture Artists Association, and Qingdao National Resources and Planning Bureau. It seeks to strengthen cultural ties and enhance artistic cooperation among SCO member states.

  • MIL-OSI China: Iran arrests over 50 with alledged ties to Israel, kills 2 in SE province

    Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday it had arrested more than 50 “terrorists and proxies” linked to Israel, and killed two others in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

    According to a statement published on IRGC’s official news outlet Sepah News, the individuals were also affiliated with “terror groups” based in eastern Iran and were detained or killed in operations over the past two weeks.

    Those individuals sought to destabilize the southern parts of Sistan and Baluchestan, and carry out sabotage operations to damage economic sectors and infrastructure, it said, adding that large quantities of weapons and ammunition, including American armaments, were seized from them.

    On June 13, Israel launched major airstrikes on several areas in Iran, including nuclear and military sites, killing senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Iran responded with multiple waves of missile and drone attacks on Israel.

    After 12 days of fighting, a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was reached on June 24.

    At least 45 Palestinians were killed by Israeli shelling and gunfire in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Gaza’s Civil Defense said, while the Israeli army announced that it had attacked 140 targets in the coastal enclave over the past 24 hours.

    Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, told Xinhua that an Israeli drone targeted a gathering of Palestinians in the Jabalia area in the northern Gaza Strip, killing five people.

    Five other people were killed in two airstrikes launched by Israeli drones, which targeted a house in the al-Tuffah neighborhood in eastern Gaza City and a gathering of Palestinians in the al-Zeitoun neighborhood in the south, according to Basal.

    In Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, Basal said that 18 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks targeting residential homes and tents housing displaced persons in various parts of the city.

    Also, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a school housing the displaced in the Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, according to Basal.

    He noted that at least 15 people were killed and 60 others injured by Israeli army fire while waiting to receive food outside two U.S.-backed aid distribution centers north of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and at the Netzarim junction in the central Gaza Strip.

    The attacks come as Palestinian security sources reported that Israeli artillery shelling has continued since the early morning hours of Tuesday on the eastern areas of Gaza City and Jabalia, north of the Strip.

    The Israeli army announced on Tuesday that the air force attacked more than 140 targets in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, including “terrorist elements, military buildings, anti-tank missile launching points, weapons depots, and additional infrastructure.”

    The army said in a statement that its forces in the Southern Command continue to operate against “terrorist organizations” in the Gaza Strip.

    On March 18, Israel resumed its military operations in the enclave. At least 6,315 Palestinians had been killed and 22,064 others injured since Israel renewed its intensive strikes, bringing the total death toll since October 2023 to 56,647, and injuries to 134,105, Gaza-based health authorities said on Tuesday.

  • MIL-OSI China: US Senate passes Trump’s landmark mega-bill

    The GOP-led Senate on Tuesday passed U.S. President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, a major stride toward Trump’s goal of getting the legislation to his desk and signed by this week’s end.

    The sweeping bill passed narrowly by 51 to 50, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding ballot. Three Republicans were the only GOP lawmakers to vote no: senators Susan Collins, Thom Tillis and Rand Paul.

    The legislation is considered the GOP’s biggest legislative win in the lead-up to next year’s midterms, in which the party could lose its slim majority in the House.

    The bill extends Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, slashes taxes on tips and provides new spending for the military and border security.

    “Today was a historic day … and we’re very excited to be a part of something that is going to make America stronger, safer and more prosperous,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after the bill passed the Senate.

    But there remains one more major hurdle ahead, as the bill needs to be passed in the House of Representatives, which is expected to vote as early as Wednesday.

    “It’s a great bill. There is something for everyone, and I think it’s going to go very nicely in the House. Actually, I think it will be easier in the House than it was in the Senate,” Trump said.

    However, Democrats have been vehemently opposed to the mega-bill, which funds an agenda to which Democrats stand in stark contrast.

    Democrats have blasted the tax cuts in the bill as reductions that benefit the wealthy. Republicans maintain that the cuts will help the middle class.

    The bill has angered Democrats for what the party says are cuts to essential programs such as Medicaid — health care coverage for low-income people — as well as to food stamps.

    Democrats also fret the bill will add trillions of U.S. dollars to the surging national debt.

    An analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said the changes Trump made in the Senate version of the bill would add trillions of dollars to the already significant national debt, and that the bill would create considerable losses in health care coverage.

    The CBO has predicted that the bill would add 2.4 trillion dollars to the national debt in the next 10 years, while also pushing up the deficit by around 3.3 trillion dollars between 2025 and 2034.

    The CBO’s analysis also forecast that the bill would cause 11.8 million more Americans to lose their insurance by 2034, which, as experts have said, will surely create hurdles for the bill’s passage in the House before Trump’s July 4 deadline.

    China’s southern island province of Hainan launched a summer tourism promotion campaign on Tuesday, and will offer 40 million yuan (about 5.59 million U.S. dollars) in subsidies to stimulate seasonal tourism spending, local authorities said.

    The program runs from July to September and will provide targeted subsidies to help cover travel to and from the province, accommodation, tickets to tourist attractions and dining expenses, according to the Hainan provincial department of tourism, culture, radio, television and sports.

    Tourists can upload valid receipts through designated online platforms. Subsidies ranging from 150 yuan to 3,060 yuan will then be directly refunded to visitors’ personal bank accounts.

    Hainan is expected to host more than 100 cultural, tourism and sports events this summer, including festivals, live performances and athletic competitions, to showcase the island’s diverse charm.

    Known for its year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, Hainan is seeking to revitalize its tourism industry. China aims to transform the province into a globally influential tourism and consumption destination by 2035.

    In 2024, Hainan recorded a total of over 97.2 million tourist visits, including both domestic and international visits, marking an 8-percent year-on-year increase. Total tourism expenditure grew by 12.5 percent last year — reaching 204 billion yuan, official data revealed.

    This year, the province is hoping to welcome more than 100 million tourist visits, both domestic and international.

    As part of its broader economic strategy, China is transforming Hainan into a Free Trade Port (FTP). As the Hainan FTP is set to begin independent customs operations by the end of the year, the province is poised to become not only a tourist haven but also a pivotal gateway for China’s opening-up drive.

    The annual inflation rate in the Eurozone is expected to reach 2 percent for June, up from 1.9 percent in May, according to a flash estimate published Tuesday by Eurostat.

    The inflation is driven by the price of services, which recorded a yearly inflation rate of 3.3 percent in June, up from 3.2 percent the previous month.

    The prices of food, alcohol, and tobacco registered a 3.1 percent year-on-year inflation rate in June, down from 3.2 percent in May.

    Inflation for non-energy industrial goods declined from 0.6 percent in May to 0.5 percent in June. A negative inflation rate of -2.7 percent was recorded for energy prices, an increase from -3.6 percent in May.

    Core inflation, which excludes energy, food, tobacco and alcohol prices, was unchanged at 2.3 percent in June.

    Among the main economies of the Eurozone, Germany recorded an inflation rate of 2 percent, down from 2.1 percent in May. France recorded an inflation rate of 0.8 percent, up from 0.6 percent in May, and Spain’s inflation rate stands at 2.2 percent, up from 2 percent in May.

    The highest inflation rate was recorded in Estonia at 5.2 percent, up from 4.6 percent the previous month, while Cyprus registered the lowest inflation rate for June at 0.5 percent, up from 0.4 percent in May.

    “Inflationary pressures have clearly weakened as wage growth is coming down and economic performance remains sluggish, keeping the door open to another rate cut in autumn,” said Bert Colijn, Chief Economist for the Netherlands at ING.

    According to Colijn, risks such as oil price spikes and the outcome of tariff negotiations between the EU and the U.S. remain.

    The European Central Bank (ECB) last month announced an eighth rate cut, bringing the policy interest rate to the lowest level since December 2022. According to the ECB statement, most measures of underlying inflation suggest that inflation will settle at around the 2 percent medium-term target on a sustained basis. However, the ECB has not yet dropped its guard, insisting that it is determined to ensure inflation stabilizes sustainably at its medium-term target.

    Market expectations for interest rate cuts were unchanged after the June inflation figures were published.

    U.S. manufacturing activity contracted for the fourth consecutive month in June, with new factory orders plummeting amid escalating trade tensions and soaring input costs that continued to weigh on the world’s largest economy, while the automotive sector showed similar signs of strain after a tariff-driven sales surge had collapsed.

    “The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) registered 49 percent in June, a 0.5-percentage point increase compared to the 48.5 percent recorded in May,” said Susan Spence, chair of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, in a press release. It was still below the critical 50 percent threshold that separates growth from contraction, according to data released Tuesday.

    The persistent weakness in U.S. industrial backbone reflected broader economic headwinds as trade disputes continued to disrupt global supply chains while manufacturers grappled with sustained price pressures.

    Raw material costs have surged for eight consecutive months, with the ISM Prices Index hitting 69.4 percent in May, according to the previous month’s data.

    The manufacturing downturn coincided with a dramatic collapse in automotive sales momentum. “The springtime surge in U.S. auto sales landed with a thud last month, setting up a slowdown in the months ahead as carmakers digest President Donald Trump’s tariffs on auto imports and consumers find fewer deals,” Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

    “The party is over,” Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for researcher Cox Automotive Inc., said in a Bloomberg interview. “It’s clearly slowing. It’s because of affordability getting worse and forcing what we think will be production declines to keep supply in balance.”

    The automotive sector’s sudden reversal illustrated the broader economic impact of trade policies. The annual automotive selling rate likely fell to 15 million in June — the slowest pace in the last 12 months — from 17.6 million in April as consumers pulled back from major purchases.

    Shoppers rushed to showrooms as beating tariff-induced price increases became a motivation to buy, pushing up second-quarter sales an estimated 2.5 percent from the prior-year period, according to industry researcher J.D. Power. However, that momentum has now evaporated.

    New orders in manufacturing, a key indicator of future production, fell for the fifth straight month to 46.4 percent in June, down 1.2 percentage points from May’s already weak 47.6 percent reading. The employment situation in manufacturing has also remained challenging as companies adjust to reduced demand and elevated operating costs.

    The automotive industry exemplified these broader manufacturing challenges. Ford Motor Company’s second-quarter sales jumped 14.2 percent, helped by employee pricing programs, though growth moderated in June. Hyundai Motor Company reported 10 percent second-quarter growth but only a 3 percent gain in June, down sharply from April’s 19 percent surge, according to Bloomberg data.

    “These tariffs are already hitting the U.S. auto industry,” said Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, describing the policies as “inflationary, if not stagflationary.”

    According to J.D. Power, average monthly car payments reached a record 747 U.S. dollars in June, up 22 dollars from a year ago. That has more people stretching car loans to 84 months, which accounted for 12 percent of all auto financing last month, up three percentage points from last year.

    “Given the impact of tariffs, prices are likely to start rising at a much faster rate,” Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist for Cox said in a press release on June 25. “Higher vehicle prices are coming to the new vehicle market.”

    Consulting firm AlixPartners predicted automakers will pass along 80 percent of Trump’s tariff costs to consumers, driving up prices by nearly 2,000 dollars per car, though the firm expected the full impact won’t be felt until year-end.

    Manufacturing companies are feeling similar pressures from multiple directions. The Prices Index recorded its highest readings since June 2022, with companies reporting significant increases in aluminum, copper, steel, electrical components, and plastic resin costs, according to earlier ISM reports.

    Supply chain executives surveyed by the ISM reported mixed conditions across different sectors. Only three of the six largest manufacturing industries (Petroleum & Coal Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; and Computer & Electronic Products) reported increased new orders in June.

    The ISM’s analysis suggested the June manufacturing reading “corresponds to a change of plus-1.9 percent in real gross domestic product on an annualized basis,” according to Spence’s statement. This indicated that while manufacturing faces headwinds, the sector’s performance would still support modest economic growth.

    The June slowdown was “a hangover from some of the sales that were pulled ahead,” said Mark Wakefield, global auto market lead for consultant AlixPartners.

    “Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for a ceasefire in Gaza for 60 days, during which time we will work with all parties to end the war,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network.

    “The Qataris and the Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring peace, will present this final proposal,” Trump said.

    He also called on Hamas to agree to the deal. “I hope, for the sake of the Middle East, that Hamas agrees to this deal, because it’s not going to get better — it’s going to get worse,” Trump added. –0–

    The agency stressed that it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating its actions with the relevant authorities and companies in the area of the incident.

    Stepping up policy support for the manufacturing sector will be necessary for China in the second half of the year in order to stabilize employment and ensure a steady growth trajectory amid lingering uncertainties, economists and analysts said.

    Their remarks came as the latest data showed that earlier policy efforts to bolster economic growth have continued to bear fruit, with key indicators of China’s manufacturing sector improving in June as production and market orders picked up.

    However, they warned that the sector still faces mounting headwinds — including falling sales prices, rising receivables and intensified market competition amid faltering external demand — and these are weighing on employment and reinforcing the need for stronger policy buffers.

    “Supply and demand in the manufacturing sector both improved in June,” said Bai Wenxi, vice-chairman of the China Enterprise Capital Union.

    “Companies, however, remained cautious in arranging production plans amid lingering uncertainties of domestic and external demand,” Bai said, adding that intensified market competition is continuing to squeeze profit margins for manufacturers as the drop in sales prices has been steeper than that for raw material prices.

    The Caixin China General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index, a privately surveyed barometer of the sector’s health, rose to 50.4 in June from 48.3 in May, showing that the manufacturing sector resumed expansion after a contraction in May, as earlier policy measures aiming to stabilize the economy continued to take effect.

    Despite the improvement, media group Caixin said in a report on Tuesday that in June, manufacturers faced declining output prices at the fastest pace in five months as they had to cut prices to boost sales, while staying generally cautious with hiring due to cost control considerations and reduced optimism regarding output in the next 12 months.

    The official manufacturing PMI survey, released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday, provided a similar picture. Although increased production and market orders sent the PMI reading higher at 49.7 in June from 49.5 in May, sales prices and employment in the sector continued to drop, with the activity of small manufacturers contracting more sharply.

    Charlie Zheng, chief economist at Samoyed Cloud Technology Group Holdings, emphasized the need for additional fiscal and monetary support to sustain the sector’s recovery, including advancing tax cuts for smaller manufacturers and reducing interest rates and the reserve requirement ratio — the amount of cash that banks must keep as reserves — to ease financing costs for businesses.

    Zheng said that such efforts are of great significance, as the impact of international trade policy uncertainties on Chinese exporters may further manifest in the second half of the year, while some manufacturers could face funding difficulties as they pursue industrial upgrading and transformation.

    Bai said that targeted support for industrial upgrading should be considered, including scaling up the issuance of local government special bonds and central bank lending aimed at supporting technological and equipment upgrades and attracting more investors to the newly launched tech-focused board in the bond market.

    The People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, vowed on Friday to amplify the intensity of monetary policy adjustments and step up support for technological innovation and equipment upgrades, after launching a series of measures earlier in the week to boost consumption.

    Anna An, president of Henkel China, said the German industrial and consumer goods group recognizes China’s strong commitment to developing high-end manufacturing and related services and has greatly benefited from its rapid growth in key sectors, such as automotive, consumer goods and electronics.

    The National Bureau of Statistics said the PMIs for equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing came in, respectively, at 51.4 and 50.9 in June, staying in expansionary territory for two consecutive months.
