    KATHMANDU, June 21 (Xinhua) — Seven people were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses in south-central Nepal on Saturday morning, local police said.

    At around 10am local time, an electric bus and a bus collided on the Chitwan section of the East-West Highway, killing three people on the spot.

    Four others died from their injuries while receiving medical treatment, Rabindra Khanal, a Chitwan district police spokesman, told Xinhua.

    According to him, the injured have been hospitalized in different hospitals in Chitwan. –0–

    Crowds of yoga practitioners in various cities across China took part in the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations, highlighting the worldwide appeal of India’s message of well-being.

    In Beijing, hundreds unrolled their mats to practice yoga, celebrating IDY with a beautiful kirtan and the energizing Common Yoga Protocol at the Old Chancery complex.

    “A guided meditation helped participants center themselves and experience a sense of calm. The experience was elevated by a graceful performance blending yoga with the elegance of Odissi dance. The crowd was also captivated by advanced yoga demonstrations,” the Embassy of India in Beijing posted on X.

    The Consulate General of India in Shanghai hosted its flagship IDY celebration, featuring yoga demonstrations, interactive sessions, and cultural activities. The event witnessed participation from a diverse audience of diplomats, yoga enthusiasts, and community members.

    In his remarks, Pratik Mathur, India’s Consul General in Shanghai, highlighted the event’s significance as a testament to the widespread appeal of Indian civilization and culture.

    “This flagship celebration is the culmination of a long series of events across Eastern China, including Hangzhou, Wuxi, and Suzhou, organized in collaboration with Indian diaspora communities, global MNCs, and Buddhist monasteries — a testament to yoga’s broad appeal,” Mathur said.

    He also emphasized yoga’s universal relevance, especially as this year marks the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations, fostering harmony and health across communities.

    “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, and harmony between man and nature,” he added, quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who advocated for the establishment of IDY at the United Nations.

    Mathur also paid tribute to the victims of the recent Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. “Our hearts are heavy with this tragedy. In such moments, yoga’s teachings of resilience, mindfulness, and inner peace offer a profound source of comfort and strength,” he said.

    The United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, Siddharth Chatterjee, attended the event as chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Chatterjee praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in globalizing yoga and his role in creating a more connected world.

    Praising yoga’s alignment with global well-being and unity, he remarked, “As a yoga practitioner, I deeply appreciate its transformative power to foster resilience and peace. This event reflects the shared commitment of India and the United Nations to promote health and harmony, strengthening bonds between nations.”

    BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) — The Samarkand branch of the China-Central Asia Belt and Road Joint Laboratory for Humanity and Environment Studies recently successfully held its second course on Chinese-Uzbek archaeological technology, according to the website of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Northwest China University (Shaanxi Province, northwest China).

    The event was organized by the above-mentioned university and the International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage “Silk Road” of Uzbekistan /hereinafter referred to as the Silk Road University/. The course was attended by 32 teachers and students from the Silk Road University, Samarkand State University, Samarkand Archaeological Institute and Samarkand State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

    The course participants were given lectures by Chinese archaeologists. They told the participants about the principles of analysis of osteochemical and molecular paleobiological technologies, as well as their application and the latest achievements in the field of studying the life models of the ancient population of Central Asia, human migration and genetic evolution, as well as the origin and spread of domesticated animals. Subsequently, in the joint laboratory, Chinese archaeologists familiarized the participants in detail with the procedures for processing samples and the basics of working with devices, conducting practical classes on sample preparation using the bone remains of animals discovered by the joint Chinese-Uzbek archaeological team.

    At the end of the course, Professor Wang Jianxin, Chief Researcher of the Silk Road Joint Archaeological Research Center of Northwest University of China, and Professor Mastura Sidikova, Dean of the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of Silk Road University, presented certificates to the participants. Wang Jianxin noted that modern scientific methods make it possible to extract rich historical and cultural information from archaeological sites. He expressed hope that the course would enable the participants to gain a basic understanding of the principles and standards of archaeological technology, awaken interest in this field and the desire to devote themselves to the protection of cultural heritage and archaeological research in Uzbekistan in order to become experts in this field. He also invited the participants to study and exchange experiences at Northwest University of China.

    Mastura Sidikova thanked Northwestern University for establishing an international joint laboratory at the Silk Road University, deepening academic cooperation and organizing major international scientific conferences that have caused a wide resonance in academic circles. She was sincerely pleased with the increase in the number of participants in the current course and expressed hope for strengthening cooperation to create more advanced platforms and opportunities in the field of training international talents. -0-

  • MIL-OSI China: Belt and Road Film Week opens in Shanghai, fueling cross-cultural ties

    The Belt and Road Film Week opened in Shanghai on June 18 as part of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), serving as a platform for international industry dialogue and offering an immersive cultural experience for residents and visitors.

    The event, themed “Travel through Cinema” and held primarily in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, features a diverse program, including film screenings, cultural industry roundtables, the Charm Pudong Tour cultural experience, and a Belt and Road lifestyle market. Organizers said they aim to combine industry expertise with public participation and promote global cultural exchange.

    This year’s lineup features 15 films from Belt and Road countries, spanning a range of genres. Several entries have been screened at major film festivals, including Rotterdam, Locarno, and Tokyo. The program centers on cross-cultural narratives and regional identities, aiming to spotlight the cultures along the ancient Silk Road.

    Event coordinators have arranged eight post-screening filmmaker meet-and-greets, some of which have sold out. Five standout films are screening concurrently in Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo and Hefei, extending the SIFF experience across the Yangtze River Delta. Honors such as the Audience Choice Award and Audience Recommendation Award are being decided by public voting during the film week.

    The event is bringing together more than 40 international filmmakers from over 20 Belt and Road countries in Pudong. Throughout the week, participants will explore key industry topics such as cross-border film collaboration, international distribution strategies, and the nurturing of emerging talent under the Belt and Road Initiative through alliance meetings and roundtable forums.

    The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance, the foundation of the film week, has expanded rapidly since its launch. With the recent addition of the Serbia International Film and Music Festival, the alliance now includes 56 institutions in 49 countries, up from 31 institutions in 29 countries. Twenty alliance members and international guests received honorary certificates during the opening ceremony.

    To strengthen cinematic exchanges among Belt and Road countries, this year’s film week appointed actors Huang Xiaoming, Yu Shi and Tang Yan as event ambassadors. Organizers said the trio will help broaden international outreach and engage audiences in China and overseas.

    The year 2025 marks the 130th anniversary of world cinema and the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema. Shanghai, the birthplace of Chinese film, has played a key role in both the nation’s cinematic evolution and the global industry. Since its launch seven years ago, the Belt and Road Film Week has combined international films with Chinese storytelling abroad, strengthening cultural ties and expanding its global reach each year.

    Building on last year’s Latin American Fiesta, this year’s Belt and Road Film Week includes a Southeast Asian market at Bicester Village Shanghai. The summer event combines culture, tourism, commerce, sports and exhibitions. Inspired by the Belt and Road Initiative, the market blends Southeast Asian and local elements, offering an immersive experience of food, art and film.

    The Belt and Road Film Week has also brought significant film industry resources to the Shanghai International Resort Area, a major tourism and entertainment zone in Pudong that includes the Shanghai Disney Resort and other commercial and cultural facilities. More than 180 film and cultural companies now operate in the area, covering entertainment, tourism, business and exhibitions.

    Bayern Munich and Flamengo booked their places in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday with wins over Boca Juniors and Chelsea, while Benfica boosted its hopes of advancing after routing Auckland City.

    Esperance also kept alive its knockout-stage chances by edging past Los Angeles FC, which joined Auckland in exiting the tournament.

    In Philadelphia, Brazil’s Flamengo moved three points clear at the top of Group D after recovering from a goal down to overcome Chelsea 3-1.

    Portuguese winger Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead when he capitalized on Wesley Franca’s miscued clearance to dribble almost half the length of the pitch before calmly shooting past Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Rossi.

    Flamengo equalized just after the hour through Bruno Henrique, who tapped home after Gonzalo Plata flicked on Gerson’s cross.

    The Rio de Janeiro outfit suddenly had the momentum, and Henrique turned provider three minutes later as his header set up Danilo to volley home at the far post.

    Chelsea was reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute after Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Lucas Ayrton.

    Wallace Yan put the result beyond doubt by playing a slick one-two with Plata before firing in from the edge of the six-yard box.

    “We always believed that we had a chance,” Flamengo manager Filipe Luis said afterwards. “I’m very proud because after our mistake in giving away the first goal, we didn’t drop our heads. We continued to play the same way. We gave our all until the end and that warms my heart.”

    In Orlando, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Barreiro scored twice apiece as Benfica romped to a 6-0 victory over Auckland City.

    Benfica initially struggled to breach the New Zealand club’s five-man defense but Di Maria broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before halftime.

    It was all one-way traffic thereafter, despite a two-hour delay due to a storm alert. Vangelis Pavlidis, Renato Sanches, Barreiro and Di Maria were all on target in the second half as Benfica registered its first win of the tournament.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Kirsty Coventry Unveils Collaborative & Inclusive International Olympic Committee (IOC) Leadership Vision at First Public Media Roundtable

    In her first major media appearance since being elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry offered a strikingly human portrait of the leader she intends to be: humble, collaborative, and unwaveringly grounded in the values of sport, equity, and Olympism, as she addressed international media during an online open roundtable on Zoom this afternoon.

    FIRST WOMAN & AFRICAN Speaking candidly for over an hour, the Zimbabwean reflected on the life journey that brought her from the pools of Harare to the corridors of Olympic power in Lausanne. Her presidency, set to begin officially on Olympic Day, 23 June 2025, will mark a historic moment as she becomes the first woman and first African to lead the IOC.

    GROUNDED LEADERSHIP Coventry made it clear that her leadership will not be rooted in authority, but in consensus and a collaborative, human-centred vision: ”In both my personal and professional career, I’ve always had incredible people around me to keep me grounded and humble; those are people whom I will continue to keep around me.” 

    She added: “Values are at the core of our daily business, they’re incredibly important in today’s communities, and I hold this very close to my heart.”

    WHY IOC FORUMS MATTER Replying to a question from Japan’s Wakako Yuki on the role of IOC Forums in attribute Conventry’s vision as president, “I have a vision that I would like to see, but I want to do it in a collaborative way. The Athletes Forum, eSport, Olympism365, the two ASOIF and WOF General Assemblies have been great platforms to listen to people, to hear topics that are important to them.”

    2ND MEDIA ROUNDTABLE IN SIGHT Coventry announced that immediately following the IOC Session on June 23-24, she has invited members to stay for a two-day “pause and reflect” workshop, an opportunity for honest dialogue about the IOC’s challenges and future direction: 

    “I’ve invited the IOC members to stay two extra days so that I can hear what is on their mind and what they see as our opportunities and what they may see as our challenges, as we move into the future and come up with different ideas. This is the first point in a longer consultation process with all stakeholders, including yourselves as media, where we’ll create another round table where I’ll get to ask you all a bunch of questions. That will strengthen the Olympic movement in a collaborative way.”

    VALUES CARRIED TO IOC PRESIDENCY Nadine Hassan from Jordan asked Kirsty, looking back on her journey, from Olympic champion to minister and now IOC President, which moments off the podium had the greatest impact in shaping the person she is today? “I’ll need a moment to properly reflect on this. I think I’d have to go back to my roots. Growing up in Zimbabwe played a huge role. It’s a small community in many ways. We’re a big country geographically, but we’re just 15 million people, and we lean on each other.

    “I think that kind of upbringing, maybe a bit more sheltered, surrounded by strong values and close-knit support, helped me understand the importance of having grounded, humble, genuine people around me. And it’s those people who’ve consistently reminded me of where I come from. That’s been one of the most powerful influences throughout my journey.

    CHALLENGES, AND DIFFICULT MEN.. New York Times reporter Tariq Panja referenced Coventry’s previous remarks about dealing with “difficult men.” She smiled knowingly and recounted the pressures she faced as a young Olympic medallist representing Zimbabwe during politically turbulent times: 

    “As athletes, we had a lot of pressure coming from different government officials in Zimbabwe, and you know, it was hard. To look at others and trying to say, I’m an athlete, I don’t believe in the politics in sport. I want to just focus on performing well,” She said, without names mentioned, “Looking back now, it taught me a lot about how to work with people, how to be respectful of differing opinions and still move forward on a shared agenda.”

    WOMEN SUPPORT WOMEN USA’s Rachel Axon asked, How has your career been shaped by other women at various career points, adding the gender equality initiatives to your role as female IOC President. Conventry highlighted the women who shaped her path, from her mother and grandmother to her university head swim coach, even Olympic trailblazers like Donna de Varona:

    She said, “My grandfather passed away when Mom was in her late teens. And so my grandmother was a single mom for most of her life, with three kids, and both were just incredibly strong women who raised families, and I think my mom’s pretty great, and my uncle and aunt. She did a great job, but she also had a successful career in fashion. My mum got to see her doing that, so she was always an incredible role model for my sister and I.”

    She adds: “My swim coach, Kim, who became a Division I coach while her husband was deployed overseas, with two very young kids, watching how she balanced that was inspiring. When we were preparing for the 2004 Olympics, her eldest came to Athens as a baby.. Again, I’ve been fortunate in my life to have very strong women around me who have shown me that it’s possible. It’s not always easy, but it’s possible,” noting her hope to pay that inspiration forward, especially for her two daughters.

    AFRICAN HERITAGE A question from China’s Mandan Zhu touched on Coventry’s rich international background and the impact of her African heritage, coming from Harare to Lausanne as a little girl with big dreams,“I can remember exactly where I was standing in my parents’ living room. I was still in my swimsuit, feeling cold after swimming in the pool, only to stand in front of the TV and watch divers compete. I would say that there’s never a dream too big.

    “You know, where there is a will to achieve, there’s a way. And don’t let someone talk you out of having that dream of what could be the best thing that happens to you. It’s quite powerful.”

    WEIGHT OF BEING ‘FIRST’ British journalist Jamie Gardner asked Coventry about the significance of becoming the IOC’s first female president at this particular moment in history. While she admitted it wasn’t something she initially focused on, the outpouring of messages from women around the world has since left a powerful mark: “I had a coworker tell me that his mum said, ‘Never in my lifetime did I think I’d see a woman lead the movement you work for.’” That moment, she admitted, hit her deeply. “It’s not just an exciting day, it’s a day with a lot of responsibility.”

    FROM SYDNEY TO BRISBANE Australia, particularly the Sydney 2000 Games, remains a defining touchstone for Coventry’s Olympic journey. Asked about her journey coming full circle, from a wide-eyed young swimmer at Sydney 2000 to President for Brisbane 2032, Coventry shared a funny tale about struggling to put on her first Speedo sharkskin suit, helped up by none other than Australian legend Susie O’Neill:

    “When we arrived in Sydney, I went into the changing room to try my Speedo suit on, and it turned into a total disaster. I had one leg in, was struggling to get the other in, lost my balance completely, and toppled over. Mortifying. Then this amazing person next to me leans down to help, and as I look up, I realise… It’s Susie. I never forget that moment because she was a role model to me, those Games, changed everything for me,” she recalled. “Now I hope Brisbane will show the world the warmth and passion of Australia, and inspire the next generations like Sydney did for me.”

    LIFTING VOICES As the media roundtable with IOC President-elect Kirsty Coventry progressed, her clarity of purpose sharpened further. In a movement often shaped by the world’s most powerful nations, Coventry made a point of bringing attention to her roots, and how they shape her priorities: “I come from a much smaller NOC, a developing country,” she said of Zimbabwe. “And I understand the challenges our athletes face. How do we close that gap? How do we ensure that athletes from all walks of life, if not with the same opportunities, at least have equal opportunities?”

    Coventry affirms that she intends to elevate voices often left on the margins. Her presidency, she hinted, will focus as much on inclusion as it will on innovation.

    LEARNING FROM YOUNG GENERATIONS Perhaps the most poignant reminder of who Coventry is, and who she intends to be as IOC President, came when she spoke about her own children. “They’re a daily reminder of our responsibility to keep sport relevant, and to listen, really listen, to what young people think is important. Kids are honest,” she said with a smile. “And sometimes that’s a very good thing.”

    Her two young daughters, she explained, are constant reminders that sport must remain relevant and engaging for younger generations. Despite the gravity of her new role, Coventry remains adamant about keeping her family grounded: “We won’t be staying in the Lausanne Palace. I want my kids to grow up doing the same things I did, making their beds, doing house chores, and just being kids.”

    ROAD AHEAD As Kirsty Coventry prepares to officially assume the role on June 23, her message is one of optimism, inclusivity, and integrity. With the weight of history on her shoulders and the wind of lived experience at her back, she is poised not just to lead the Olympic Movement but to reshape it for the modern age, starting by one athlete, one story, one honest conversation at a time.

    SHANGHAI, June 21 (Xinhua) — U.S. automaker Tesla signed a deal with Chinese partners on Friday to build a grid-scale energy storage station in Shanghai using its Megapack battery packs.

    The total investment in the project will be 4 billion yuan (about $556 million). The agreement marks Tesla’s entry into China’s rapidly growing energy storage market and paves the way for its facility to be connected to the world’s largest power grid.

    According to the agreement signed by Tesla, the Lingang New Area Government of China /Shanghai/ Pilot Free Trade Zone, the People’s Government of Fengxian District of Shanghai and China Kangfu International Leasing Co., Ltd., the gigawatt-hour energy storage station will be built in the Lingang New Area.

    It will be Tesla’s first grid-scale energy storage station built in mainland China.

    Tesla China’s energy business general manager Dong Kun said that once operational, the station will participate in spot electricity trading, helping to smooth out peak loads in local networks and improve the stability of the power system.

    Tesla also plans to expand its partnership with China Kangfu to deliver carbon-free energy solutions globally.

Its CERES-1 rocket holds the record for the most successful launches among China’s privately developed rockets, underscoring Beijing’s growing commercial space capabilities.

    As the birthplace of China’s space program, Beijing is implementing the 14th Five-Year Plan’s directive to promote the integrated development of strategic emerging industries. 

    The city has established a comprehensive commercial space supply chain, hosting more than half of the country’s core aerospace R&D institutions and over 300 high-tech commercial space enterprises. Of these, 46 were named to the 2024 China Top 100 Commercial Space Companies list, accounting for nearly half of the national total and highlighting Beijing’s leading position in the industry.

    The city has established a distinctive spatial layout known as “Southern Rockets, Northern Satellites.” In the south, areas such as E-Town and Fengtai district have become hubs for commercial rocket manufacturers, including industry leaders Landspace and Galactic Energy, representing more than 70% of China’s commercial launch vehicle companies.

    Meanwhile, Haidian district in the north has developed into the country’s most advanced cluster for satellite manufacturing, boasting a fully developed supply chain for spacecraft production.

    Beijing’s technological achievements continue to set new industry benchmarks. Landspace’s Zhuque-3 test vehicle completed a 10-kilometer vertical takeoff and landing, making it the first Chinese reusable rocket to demonstrate mid-air reignition.

    Galactic Energy launched seven missions in 2023, ranking third globally among commercial space firms. In satellite technology, Galaxy Space carried out Thailand’s first low-Earth orbit broadband satellite internet test in May 2024, marking China’s first overseas deployment of such services.

    On the international stage, Beijing is advancing the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ International Meridian Circle Program, which recently completed its second phase after securing cooperation with 13 overseas institutions. The city also uses platforms like the Zhongguancun Forum’s space sessions to promote global industry dialogue and expand space infrastructure partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative.

    Following the 14th Five-Year Plan’s call to advance core technologies, the city has launched several initiatives, including establishing the Beijing Reusable Rocket Technology Innovation Center and supporting more than 30 research projects by firms such as Landspace. The city attracted 1 billion yuan ($139 million) in investment for seven commercial space and low-altitude economy firms in 2024 and released 10 initial application scenarios for technologies such as natural resource monitoring and emergency relief.

    Looking ahead, Beijing’s commercial space sector will focus on three key areas. For launch vehicles, the goal is to achieve orbital recovery and reuse of rockets by 2026 and to start developing a super heavy-lift rocket. For satellites, plans include research on a space computing constellation and advances in solar arrays and electric propulsion. The city also aims to boost commercial satellite services in areas such as mobile communications, insurance claims, smart cities and autonomous driving.

    In the first five months of 2025, 24,018 new foreign-invested enterprises were established on the Chinese mainland, representing year-on-year growth of 10.4 percent, the Ministry of Commerce said on Friday.

    From January to May, foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Chinese mainland totaled 358.19 billion yuan (about 49.96 billion U.S. dollars) in actual use, which was down 13.2 percent year on year, according to the ministry.

    The actual use of FDI during the period came in at 91.52 billion yuan for the manufacturing industry, and at 259.64 billion yuan for the services industry.

    The actual use of FDI in the country’s high-tech industries reached 109.04 billion yuan, with FDI rising 146 percent in the e-commerce services sector, 74.9 percent in the aerospace equipment manufacturing sector, 59.2 percent in the chemical pharmaceuticals manufacturing sector, and 20 percent in the medical instrument and equipment manufacturing sector.

    Investment from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states increased 20.5 percent year on year during the period, and investment from Japan rose 70.2 percent, per ministry data.

    Investment from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea and Germany increased 60.9 percent, 10.3 percent and 7.1 percent during the same period, according to the data.

    In Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as Beijing E-Town, drivers and pedestrians have grown increasingly accustomed to driverless robotaxis.

    But autonomous technology isn’t just limited to ride-hailing in the area. Driverless sanitation vehicles now sweep the streets along pre-programmed routes, while autonomous minibuses shuttle back and forth along tree-lined avenues.

    This futuristic reality can be traced back to September 2020, when the Chinese capital launched the world’s first high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone.

    Since then, the city has completed the intelligent deployment of roadside infrastructure across 600 square kilometers and plans to expand the demonstration zone to approximately 3,000 square kilometers between the fourth and sixth ring roads.

    To date, the demonstration zone has issued road test permits to 33 companies, covering some 900 vehicles with a combined autonomous driving test mileage of over 32 million kilometers, accounting for over a quarter of the total national autonomous test mileage.

    Autonomous driving has become a key area in China’s push to integrate digital technologies with the real economy. As pilot projects expand, cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen are advancing multi-scenario applications, from ride-hailing and logistics to public transit and street cleaning.

    Beijing, home to leading companies in the field, including Baidu, Pony.ai and Neolix, is forging the road ahead with both regulation and deployment. In April, a new local regulation on autonomous vehicles took effect, providing a clear regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles equipped with Level 3 and higher systems.

    Shanghai and Shenzhen are also accelerating development. Shanghai recently expanded its autonomous driving test roads to more than 750 kilometers, while Shenzhen has rolled out AI-powered buses on several urban routes. Backed by dedicated legislation and cutting-edge vehicle-road coordination systems, both cities are rapidly scaling their smart mobility ecosystems.

    At a modern distribution facility in the E-Town operated by autonomous driving vehicle producer Neolix, a fleet of autonomous delivery vehicles glides in one after another.

    Inside the sleek white building, each vehicle halts precisely beneath a massive overhead conveyor belt.

    As the vehicles open their lids automatically, parcels slide down from the second floor, neatly filling each compartment. Once loaded, the lids close, and the vehicles quietly roll out, ready for dispatch.

    Powered by an intelligent backend scheduling system, the factory can coordinate hundreds of autonomous delivery vehicles with various sorting lanes, achieving precise and efficient package matching.

    “Our autonomous vehicles are primarily operating regularly in Beijing’s Shunyi District and E-town. Overall, we can help courier companies reduce logistics costs by around 50 percent while improving delivery efficiency by roughly 30 percent,” said Yang Zhe, the co-founder of Neolix.

    “Our vehicle is equipped with 12 cameras and a LiDAR, enabling full 360-degree perception with no blind spots,” Yang added. “When the system detects an obstacle, it locks onto the object, calculates its size and distance, and then decides whether to continue forward or take an alternate route.”

    By the end of August 2024, Chinese public security authorities had issued 16,000 test licenses for autonomous vehicles, with some 32,000 kilometers of roads nationwide opened for autonomous vehicle testing, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

    As intelligent vehicle technology advances rapidly, safety has become a core industry challenge. From data privacy to AI misjudgments in autonomous driving, experts stress the need for clearer safety boundaries as AI plays a deeper role in the sector.

    “As AI reaches a certain stage of development, it is essential to address deeper issues spanning industry, technology, safety, as well as social, legal, and ethical dimensions,” said Su Linke, an executive from the new energy vehicle brand Deepal.

    Finding ways for AI to serve both vehicles and people better and to help foster more harmonious social relationships should be a shared priority in advancing the industry, Su added.

    The launch ceremony for the Japanese version of a compilation of excerpts from discourses on Chinese modernization by Chinese President Xi Jinping and a seminar on Chinese solutions to global development has been held in Tokyo, attracting more than 120 guests from Chinese and Japanese government bodies, thinktanks and media.

    At the event on Thursday, the guests jointly unveiled the Japanese version of the book. As of now, the book has been published in six foreign languages and has been distributed to 30 countries and regions around the world.

    The guests and scholars believe that the book, which collects a series of key discourses by Xi regarding Chinese modernization, comprehensively reflects the rich connotation and core spirit of Chinese modernization.

    The Japanese version of this work, along with the previously published English, French, Russian, Arabic editions and the recently released Spanish edition, will help the international community gain deeper insights into the historical trend, theoretical system, practical requirements and global significance of Chinese modernization, they added.

    The attendees believe that Chinese modernization is the crystallization of Eastern wisdom that promotes the progress of human civilization, a “monument of the times” forged by the Communist Party of China (CPC) in uniting and leading the people through a century-long journey, a path of human justice that takes root in the land of China and shines with the light of truth, as well as the epitome of Xi’s thoughts on governing the country.

    Chinese-style modernization injects stability and certainty into the world, brings new impetus and opportunities to the world, and instills openness and mutual benefit into the world, they said.

    According to Ding Xuexiang, ten years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out at the general debate of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly that peace, development, equality, justice, democracy and freedom are the common values of all mankind and the lofty goals of the UN. This important judgment goes beyond the differences between different countries, ethnic groups, social systems and ideologies, outlining a value-based concentric circle for building a community with a shared future for mankind, and has received broad support and positive feedback from the international community, the vice premier added.

    The Deputy Prime Minister put forward the following four-point proposal.

    Ding Xuexiang said that China and Russia are true friends who share joys and sorrows, and good partners who achieve mutual success. In May, President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Russia and attended the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, he said.     DAMASCUS, June 21 (Xinhua) — The situation in Syria remains both “fragile and encouraging” amid the continued return of displaced persons, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Friday.

    Speaking at a press conference in Damascus to mark World Refugee Day during his second visit to Syria this year, he said that since December 2024, some 2 million Syrians have returned to their homes, including both refugees and internally displaced persons.

    Grandi told Xinhua that about 1.4-1.5 million internally displaced Syrians have returned to their homes, while another 600,000 or so have returned from neighboring countries, including Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. “Two million is still only a fraction of the total, but it is a significant number,” he said.

    Sudan has overtaken Syria in terms of the scale of its displacement crisis, the high commissioner said, with 14 million people displaced from their homes – 10 million to other parts of the country, and another 4 million abroad. “It’s a sad competition,” he said. “But the fact that Syria is no longer in first place points to the possibility of ending the crisis.”

    Despite the ongoing return of refugees, Grandi warned of difficult living conditions in Syria and called for increased international support. “Infrastructure, housing, energy, health and education services all need to be restored to ensure that the return of people is sustainable,” he stressed. “I call on the international community to help Syria meet this challenge,” the High Commissioner added.     Former Spain international midfielder Iker Muniain raised the prospect of retirement on Friday after parting ways with Argentine club San Lorenzo.

    The 32-year-old had been tied to the Buenos Aires club until December but exercised an option to terminate the contract early, citing personal reasons.

    “I’m here to announce that I’m leaving San Lorenzo but a little piece of me will stay here forever,” Muniain told a news conference in Buenos Aires, adding that he would need time to think about his future.

    “This is the first time I’ve considered quitting playing. There is a good chance that this will happen, and I’ll be giving it some more thought.”

    Muniain made 26 appearances across all competitions for San Lorenzo, scoring four goals and providing one assist, after joining the club on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao last September.

    His time in Argentina coincided with an institutional crisis at San Lorenzo, including a corruption scandal engulfing the club’s president, Marcelo Moretti, and financial troubles that delayed player salary payments.

    Muniain did not indicate whether the off-field turmoil influenced his decision but insisted he would recall his time at the club fondly.

    “I’ve been able to experience nine or 10 truly wonderful months despite all the circumstances and problems that have arisen at times,” said Muniain, who has two Spain caps. “It’s been very special, it’s been very beautiful. It has been worthwhile and the memories will last a lifetime.”

    “I’m so happy because I did the double, double world champion! I am very happy to be the first world champion and want to be the first Olympic champion too,” said Liparteliani, 25, who is now the first and only Georgian woman to win a world championship among all Olympic sports.

    Germany and Japan shared the third place on the mixed team podium.

    The eight-day World Judo Championships featured individual and mixed team events as Japan topped the medal standings with six golds, four silvers, and four bronzes from individual competitions.

    BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) — The grandiose Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Conference and Exhibition Complex project in the east China coastal city of Qingdao has recently passed the acceptance test for construction and installation work.

    As a key component of the China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Qingdao, the SCO Conference and Exhibition Complex with a 50-meter-high main building began construction in September 2021. Its total construction area is 237,000 square meters.

    According to the Qingdao Daily newspaper, a total of 17,000 tons of steel materials were used to build the complex, with the steel truss used in the structure having a maximum weight of 65 tons and a maximum span of 54 meters, which is equal to the total length of two standard basketball courts. Advanced automatic software control technologies, including welding robots, were used in the processing of steel components. At present, 8 new applied technologies and 5 inventions have been patented for the project, the publication says.

    The construction of this complex is considered an important step in strengthening the platform construction for the development of international cooperation in the above-mentioned demonstration zone in Qingdao, allowing for the promotion of trade and economic ties with the SCO countries as well as the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.     BISHKEK, June 21 (Xinhua) — “When we were children, we thought about how to keep livestock, and now young people are learning from us how to better serve tourists,” said Marat Rysaliev, 54, a resident of Kazarman village in Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region. He credited the new road built with Chinese construction workers for the big change.

    Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country. Its capital Bishkek in the north and Jalal-Abad and Osh in the south are important economic areas of the country. However, traffic on the old highway connecting the north and south of Kyrgyzstan was inconvenient.

    “The road used to be bad, gravel. Accidents often happened on it,” recalls M. Rysaliev. “Heavy-duty vehicles like semi-trailers never came here. And the materials and tools needed for construction could not be brought to us.”

    As one of the first countries to support and participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road, Kyrgyzstan has cooperated with China in the construction of the North-South alternative highway. The new transport route, with a total length of 433 km, has brought real conveniences and improved the well-being of local residents, and has given new impetus to the development of areas located along it.

    “After the construction of the new highway was completed, it became very convenient for people to get to Jalal-Abad, and now you can get to Issyk-Kul much faster.     “It was difficult for residents of our district to travel to Bishkek. For a long time, communications were poorly developed,” said M. Murataliev. “Now the journey to the capital along the new road takes only 5-6 hours. Previously, it took as much as 8-9 hours and even longer.”

    The head of the Toguz-Toro district also emphasized that with the opening of the new highway, local and foreign investors are coming to the district. According to him, this will contribute to the development of tourism and the hotel business of the district.
