BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) — Customs offices at Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport processed 478 million yuan (about 66.52 million U.S. dollars) worth of value-added tax (VAT) refund applications for outbound foreign tourists in the first five months of 2025, up 91.61 percent year on year and breaking a new historical record in the same period of previous years.

The figures show that 12,180 VAT refund applications were processed at the two airports during the period, up 147.01 percent year-on-year, Beijing Customs said, adding that China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy has significantly boosted the number of foreign visitors to China.

Thanks to China’s continuous efforts to optimize its tax refund policy for foreign tourists, the consumption potential of the country’s inbound tourism is being fully realized. During the recently concluded three-day holiday for China’s traditional Duanwu or Dragon Boat Festival, Beijing’s two international airports handled 263.81 percent more tax refund applications than the same period last year, with the total refundable amount increasing by 130.59 percent, according to data from Beijing Customs.

Currently, in addition to setting up more tax refund processing windows at airport departure areas, Beijing Customs has also established close cooperation with tax authorities, tourism departments and airport operators to enhance the VAT refund application process awareness of foreign tourists through airport media infrastructure, multimedia systems and government media platforms.

The following is issued on behalf of the Office of The Ombudsman: The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, today (June 10) announced the launch of a full investigation into the procedures and mechanisms currently employed by the Hospital Authority (HA) in providing an assistive device loan service to the public. Hospitals under the HA have long provided patients and their families or carers with a loan service of assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, canes and walking frames to support patients in their daily routine and rehabilitation during recovery. While this service is undoubtedly beneficial to the public and worthy of support, available information indicates that the borrowing and returning procedures are rather cumbersome and overly stringent. For example, when a device is returned, the deposit payer must present the deposit receipt to collect the refund in person at the hospital; authorising a representative is not acceptable. Moreover, without the receipt, a refund will be denied even if the deposit payer visits the hospital in person and provides proof of the device’s proper return. Mr Chan said, “Assistive devices are essential to facilitating the early recovery and daily lives of patients with needs, and alleviating the burden on families and carers. The Office has noted that the HA’s current loan arrangements may cause varying degrees of inconvenience to patients and their families and carers. Given the significant number of borrowers and a 10/06/2025, 09:54 Ombudsman probes Hospital Authority’s assistive device loan service (with photo) https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202506/10/P2025061000292p.htm 1/2 deposit as high as $3,500 for each assistive device, denying refunds due to missing receipts would not only lead to conflicts, but also imposes a financial burden on patients and their families. • MIL-OSI Security: 5 Men Plead Guilty for Role in Global Digital Asset Investment Scam Conspiracy Resulting in Theft of More than $36.9 Million from Victims

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

LOS ANGELES – Five men have pleaded guilty for their roles in laundering more than $36.9 million from victims of an international digital asset investment scam conspiracy that was carried out from scam centers in Cambodia, the Justice Department announced today.

The following defendants were part of an international criminal network that induced U.S. victims, believing they were investing in digital assets, to transfer funds to accounts controlled by co-conspirators and that laundered victim money through U.S. shell companies, international bank accounts, and digital asset wallets:

    • Joseph Wong, 33, of Alhambra;
    • Yicheng Zhang, 39, of China;
    • Jose Somarriba, 55, of Los Angeles;
    • Shengsheng He, 39, of La Puente; and
    • Jingliang Su, 44, of China and Turkey.

As part of the conspiracy, co-conspirators residing overseas contacted U.S. victims directly through unsolicited social media interactions, telephone calls, text messages, and online dating services and gain the victims’ trust.

The co-conspirators then promoted fraudulent digital asset investments to the victims. Scammers would tell victims that their investments were appreciating in value when, in fact, those funds were stolen and not invested at all.

Instead, more than $36.9 million in victim funds were transferred from U.S. bank accounts controlled by the co-conspirators to a single account at Deltec Bank in the Bahamas, opened in the name of Axis Digital Limited.

Somarriba, He, and Su directed Deltec Bank to convert victim funds to the stablecoin Tether (USDT) and to transfer the converted funds to a digital asset wallet controlled by individuals in Cambodia. From there, co-conspirators in Cambodia transferred the USDT to the leaders of scam centers throughout the region including in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Somarriba and He founded Axis Digital and opened the Deltec Bank account. Su joined Axis Digital as a director and participated in the digital asset conversions and transfers of victim funds.

Wong managed a network of money launderers in Los Angeles who registered shell companies, opened U.S. bank accounts, and wired victim funds to international bank accounts. Zhang opened and operated two U.S. bank accounts used to launder victim proceeds.

Zhang and Wong pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy. They each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Zhang has been in custody since May 2024. He, Somarriba, and Su pleaded guilty to conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money services business. He, Somarriba, and Su each face a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Su has been in custody since November 2024 and has a sentencing hearing scheduled for November 17.

Eight co-conspirators have pleaded guilty so far, including Daren Li, a national of China and St. Kitts and Nevis and former resident of Cambodia and the United Arab Emirates who has been in U.S. custody since April 2024, and Lu Zhang, a Chinese national illegally in the United States who managed a network of U.S.-based money launderers, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering on Nov. 12, 2024 and May 13, 2024, respectively.

The United States Secret Service’s Global Investigative Operations Center is investigating the case. The Homeland Security Investigations’ El Camino Real Financial Crimes Task Force, Customs and Border Protection’s National Targeting Center, U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, Dominican National Police, and U.S. Marshals Service provided valuable assistance.

Assistant United States Attorneys Maxwell Coll and Alexander Gorin of the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section, Assistant United States Attorney Nisha Chandran of the Major Frauds Section, and Trial Attorneys Stefanie Schwartz of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Tamara Livshiz of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section are prosecuting these cases.

  • MIL-OSI China: Honghe sweaters ‘dress’ their way into global market

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Tucked away in the misty folds of rural Zhejiang Province lies a township that could very well be one of fashion’s best kept secrets. Each year, over 400 million sweaters glide off production lines in Honghe — a name that barely registers on most global style radars, yet it has quietly knit itself into an industrial powerhouse with an annual turnover of over 20 billion yuan (about 2.78 billion U.S. dollars).

A stroll through Honghe is like being transported into the heart of a living atelier. Yarn shops, accessory stores and design studios line the streets, while tricycles laden with raw materials zip through the shaded lanes in a rhythmic blur. This bustling scene hums with purpose, a fusion of tradition, ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of quality.

Honghe’s sweater story began modestly in the mid-1970s with the town’s first commune-run knitting factory. By 1984, the local market was pulsing with promise, drawing in entrepreneurs like Gao Xiaohua, who moved his knitting machines and shop from his home to the market.

His eye for quality — fastidiously hand-selecting yarns, obsessively testing for color fastness — earned him a loyal customer base and laid the foundation for what would become Zhejiang 30 Autumn Garments Co., Ltd.

“When I first moved my new factory here, the road in front of the gate wasn’t even paved,” Gao recalled while pointing to Fumin Road. By 2002, his factory had expanded to an over 10,000 square meter lot, and was one entity among countless others helping the sweater industry in Honghe take shape.

Today, in 30 Autumn’s intelligent workshop, workers deftly operate computerized knitting machines, producing intricate patterns and textures that cater to diverse tastes. With collaborative efforts, the company can churn out over 20,000 sweaters daily.

Today, Honghe boasts over 20 large-scale sweater enterprises, creating jobs for 70,000 people and forming a complete industrial chain from spinning to sales.

Honghe’s global reach is driven by its ability to meet international demands and make innovations. Shuosheng Apparel Co., Ltd., run by Zheng Youlan, has built a strong customer base in South America and Mexico. She learned firsthand during a trade mission to Dubai in 2024 that local buyers crave eco-friendly materials — a valuable insight that helped her expand her business.

Honghe sweaters have been popular in the Middle East market for over 20 years, attracting more than 1,000 international buyers to place orders every year, with an annual export value reaching tens of millions of U.S. dollars, according to Zheng.

In 2024, the town’s sweater export value reached 609 million yuan, up 20.38 percent year on year, contributing about one third of its total industrial export volume.

The town’s innovation extends beyond the factory floor. The platform, Mao Shan Pai, a collaboration between the local government, state-owned companies and the local chamber of commerce, invites overseas trade delegations and organizes international visits for local enterprises. It also leverages AI technology to break down language barriers and showcase products through digital fashion shows, enhancing the town’s global presence.

Stepping into the AI studio of Mao Shan Pai, the scene empowered by technology is refreshing. Multilingual digital avatars work around the clock to introduce new products to global buyers, making time zone and language barriers things of the past.

The AI design system can generate 3D models of different styles wearing the sweaters based on a single flat image of a sweater, meeting various needs. The models’ postures and lighting effects can vividly display the texture, drape and other qualities of the sweaters.

Mao Shan Pai integrates resources from eight major sweater markets, 10 industrial parks, over 2,000 enterprises and nearly 10,000 stall operators in Honghe.

It provides one-stop digital trade services, simplifying the complex process of sweater exports. With over 10,000 new products released annually and nearly 2,600 registered overseas buyers, the platform has become a key driver of Honghe’s international success.

“From domestic and international markets to digital infrastructure and industry integration, we are committed to making Honghe the global epicenter of sweaters,” said Xu Wei, secretary general of the Honghe sweater chamber of commerce.

NICE, France, June 10 (Xinhua) — Countries must respect science and international law when it comes to exploiting the seabed to prevent it from becoming a lawless “Wild West,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Monday at the opening of the third U.N. Ocean Conference in Nice, southeastern France.

He said there was a need to balance legitimate concerns about environmental impacts with legitimate interests in using ocean resources to support economic sustainability and the transition to green energy. He stressed that future actions should be “science-based, precautionary and consistent with the rights and obligations enshrined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.”

“I support the ongoing work of the International Seabed Authority on this important issue. The deep sea cannot become the Wild West,” the Secretary-General added.

The third UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, aims to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14): conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke out against deep-sea exploitation, warning that much of the seabed remains largely unexplored. “It is madness to exploit the deep sea before exploration has even begun… A moratorium on deep sea exploitation is an international imperative,” Macron said.

“The deep sea is not for sale, just like Greenland, Antarctica or the open sea,” he said.

In April, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing deep-sea mining, a unilateral move that drew criticism from the International Seabed Authority. –0–

MEXICO CITY, June 9 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday called on the U.S. authorities to respect immigration procedures and human dignity, following recent mass detentions of migrants and subsequent protests in Los Angeles, California.

    K. Sheinbaum read a statement about the Los Angeles protests at a daily morning press conference also attended by the country’s Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente.

The statement outlined five measures the Mexican government is taking to protect the rights of Mexican migrants in the United States.

“The Mexican government will not tolerate actions that violate human rights,” the president said, asking the US authorities “respectfully but firmly” to act in accordance with legal procedure and within the framework of respect for human dignity.

“We do not condone violent actions as a form of protest… we call on the Mexican community to act peacefully and not to succumb to provocations,” added K. Sheinbaum.

She stressed that most Mexicans in Los Angeles live and work there legally, and the U.S. economy “needs them.”

“The Mexican government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the human rights of Mexicans abroad, regardless of their immigration status,” the president said.

Through its consular network, the Mexican government offers legal advice and other assistance to ensure that Mexicans are treated fairly.

Some 42 Mexicans, including 37 men and five women, were arrested during the Los Angeles protests, the foreign minister said.

Xi urges China, S. Korea to lift strategic cooperative partnership to higher level

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that China and South Korea should lift their strategic cooperative partnership to a higher level, so as to deliver more benefits to the two peoples and bring greater certainty to the turbulent regional and international landscapes.

Xi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

Extending congratulations once again to Lee on his election as South Korean president, Xi said that China and South Korea are close neighbors that cannot be moved away from each other.

Over the past 33 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries have transcended differences in ideology and social systems, and actively advanced exchanges and cooperation across various fields, thus contributing to each other’s success and achieving common development, he said.

A sound, stable and ever-deepening China-South Korea relationship, Xi said, conforms to the trend of the times, serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples, and contributes to regional and global peace, stability, development and prosperity.

China and South Korea should stay committed to the original aspiration of establishing their diplomatic ties, uphold good-neighborliness and friendship, and strive for mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, Xi said.

The two sides, he said, should enhance exchanges at various levels and across various areas to increase strategic mutual trust, strengthen bilateral cooperation and multilateral coordination to jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and ensure stable and smooth global and regional industrial and supply chains.

China and South Korea should deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and cement public support, so as to plant the seeds of China-South Korea friendship deep in the hearts of the two peoples, Xi said.

They should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns and keep bilateral relations on the right track to ensure the sound and steady growth of China-South Korea relations, he added.

Lee, for his part, said he agrees with Xi’s remarks, stressing the close geographical proximity, longstanding exchanges, and close economic, trade, and cultural connections between South Korea and China.

While expressing admiration for China’s impressive development achievements under Xi’s outstanding leadership, Lee said that he attaches great importance to South Korea-China relations, and is ready to work with China to deepen their good-neighborly and friendly relations, enhance mutual goodwill between the two peoples and achieve more results in bilateral cooperation.

  • MIL-OSI China: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ soars again in fiery live-action debut

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

The live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to hit Chinese cinemas on June 13, following its premiere at Universal Beijing Resort on June 5.

A still from “How to Train Your Dragon.” [Photo courtesy of Universal Pictures]

The film, directed by Dean DeBlois — who also directed the original animated trilogy — retells the story of Hiccup (Mason Thames), a young Viking who befriends a dragon and defies his community’s traditions. Gerard Butler stars as Chief Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father, reprising the role he voiced in the original animated films. Hiccup is joined by allies Astrid (Nico Parker) and Gobber (Nick Frost) as they work to unite Vikings and dragons against an ancient threat, demonstrating that their bond can change both worlds.

Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s New York Times bestselling book series, DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise has grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide, including over 859 million yuan ($119 million) in China.

Now, DeBlois brings his animated saga to life as a live-action spectacle, using cutting-edge visual effects to create a realistic and epic adventure as Hiccup and Toothless discover the true meaning of friendship, courage and destiny. Notably, “How to Train Your Dragon” is part of the Filmed for IMAX program, which provides filmmakers with IMAX technology to deliver the most immersive movie experience to audiences worldwide.

“I decided to revisit ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ because it presented a remarkable opportunity — not only to direct a live-action film, but to return to a world I’ve genuinely missed,” DeBlois said. “These characters and this universe have stayed with me, and now we can bring them back with such authenticity and conviction that, when audiences enter this world, they’ll never want to leave.”

DeBlois said his approach combines visual spectacle with emotional depth. “I’ve always been drawn to stories that weave meaning into moments of wonder,” he said. “‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is about finding the courage to see beyond fear and convention. Hiccup’s journey shows us the power of questioning what we’re taught and embracing the possibility of something greater. He’s mocked, ridiculed and misunderstood, but he stays true to his convictions — and that’s what makes his story so universal.”

The filmmakers sought to expand Berk’s world by incorporating diverse Viking and dragon lore. Producer Adam Siegel said research into global dragon myths enabled the team to draw on multiple cultural influences, resulting in a more interconnected setting.

For DeBlois, this global perspective enhanced the narrative. “We imagined the Vikings of Berk traveling far and wide, encountering warriors and mythologies from other lands,” DeBlois said. “By bringing these traditions together, we created a world where the threat of dragons unites people from vastly different backgrounds. It’s a story of finding common ground in the face of fear.”

Making dragons feel real drove every aspect of the production. “The key is grounding the dragons in familiar animal behaviors,” the director said. “By drawing inspiration from cats, dogs, horses and other animals, we’ve created creatures that feel authentic even though they’re fantasy creatures. Each dragon has a unique personality, and they live within a real, grounded world. Our goal was to make audiences believe in dragons as completely as they believed in the dinosaurs of ‘Jurassic Park.’”

DeBlois found reimagining his beloved creation in live-action to be a delicate balancing act between reverence and reinvention. “My hope is that audiences who loved these characters in animation will rediscover them, both with familiar warmth and unexpected new depth,” he said. “We approached this adaptation with profound respect for what came before, while daring to imagine what could become. It’s a story that captures the magic of flying, the courage to question what we’re taught and the wonder of discovering something extraordinary within yourself. That’s what ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ has always been about — and what this film delivers in a way audiences have never seen before.”

This year marks a milestone for DeBlois, with both “Lilo & Stitch” and “How to Train Your Dragon” — his animated collaborations with Chris Sanders — adapted into live-action films. DeBlois wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch,” which has grossed more than $772 million worldwide as of June 8. The live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” is set for global release later this month.

The resort launched a themed month for the film, featuring themed food, merchandise and photo opportunities with performers playing Hiccup and Astrid. David Gosset, founder of the China-Europe-America Global Initiative, delivered a keynote speech at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai on June 8, urging China and Europe to join forces in creating a “new golden age for humanity.” His address came at a crucial time, ahead of a high-level EU-China summit to be held in Beijing next month.

During his speech, Gosset emphasized that the long-standing relationship between the European Union and China has global significance and untapped potential. “Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, the European Union and China have made remarkable progress,” he noted, highlighting achievements in trade, education and cultural exchange. “But today, we find ourselves at a crossroads.”

Against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, Gosset rejected narratives of deglobalization and confrontation. Instead, he advocated for a renewed ambition grounded in cooperation, mutual respect and shared responsibility. China and Europe must present a compelling alternative to the zero-sum mindset that is fragmenting the world, he said, criticizing unilateralism and hegemonic instincts in global affairs — particularly from the United States.

Citing remarks by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the 2025 Shangri-La Dialogue, Gosset warned of the risks posed by misrepresenting China as a military threat. He called for China and Europe to exercise “genuine leadership,” including in reforming multilateral institutions and advancing ecological civilization.

Gosset proposed strengthening ties through deeper economic, technological and cultural cooperation. He also called for a more ambitious version of the Erasmus student exchange program between China and Europe, enhanced collaboration in quantum technologies and space, and joint efforts to support the Global South. “True security,” he argued, “comes from social cohesion, economic opportunity and environmental sustainability — not military power.”

As the China-EU Summit approaches, Gosset urged both sides to move beyond managing differences and toward crafting a strategic partnership fit for the 21st century. “Let this be the dawn of a new golden age — for Europe, for China and for all of humanity,” he concluded.

  • MIL-OSI China: Scaloni: Mastantuono’s Real Madrid move ‘huge’

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni heaped praise on teenager Franco Mastantuono on Monday ahead of the River Plate midfielder’s expected move to Real Madrid.

The Spanish club has reportedly agreed to a deal worth 45 million U.S. dollars for the 17-year-old, who made his international debut in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Chile in Santiago last Thursday.

“Going to Real Madrid is a huge thing,” Scaloni told a news conference on the eve of Argentina’s home World Cup qualifier against Colombia.

“We’re talking about the best or one of the best clubs in the world. It’s a huge step for him and obviously he’s still only 17.”

Mastantuono has been a revelation for River Plate this year with seven goals and four assists in 19 games across all competitions.

But Scaloni warned of placing unrealistic expectations on the elegant left-footed playmaker.

“We need everyone around him to remember that he’s only 17,” Scaloni said. “We all have to help to make him better. I’m happy that this is happening because it means that big clubs are looking at Argentine football.”

Meanwhile, Scaloni confirmed that captain Lionel Messi would start in Tuesday’s clash at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The 37-year-old began Thursday’s clash on the bench as Scaloni rested key players in the knowledge that a World Cup place is already assured.

“Leo will start. We have no doubts, and we hope the fans enjoy him and the team,” the 47-year-old head coach said.

Argentina leads the 10-team South American group with 34 points, 13 ahead of sixth-placed Colombia with three qualifiers remaining. The top six teams will earn direct entry to football’s showpiece tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada next year.

Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti has hailed Raphinha as one the best players in the world as the Barcelona forward prepares to return for a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

Raphinha is set to start Tuesday’s clash at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo after missing Brazil’s goalless draw with Ecuador in Guayaquil last Thursday due to suspension.

“It’s great that Raphinha is back,” Ancelotti told a news conference. “He has shown that he is one of the best players in football at the moment.”

Raphinha enjoyed a breakout season in 2024-25 with 34 goals in 57 games across all competitions for Barcelona.

The 28-year-old former Leeds United player has also been a consistent performer at international level and is Brazil’s top scorer in the current qualifying campaign with five goals.

“He is a very important player for us and could help us to unlock the game against a team that knows how to defend,” Ancelotti said.

The Italian manager had words of praise for Paraguay, which is currently third in the 10-team South American group, two points ahead of fourth-placed Brazil.

“Paraguay is playing very well,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “It’s a very solid team and is not afraid to go forward. But we are going to try to play our game and we hope that we can make our fans happy.”

The top six teams in the South American group will automatically qualify for next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

  • MIL-Evening Report: hMPV is likely one of the viruses making us sick this winter. Here’s what to know about human metapneumovirus

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Lara Herrero, Associate Professor and Research Leader in Virology and Infectious Disease, Griffith University

    svetikd/Getty Images

As winter settles over Australia, it’s not just the drop in temperature we notice – there’s also a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses. Most of us are familiar with the usual winter players such as COVID, influenza and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), which often dominate news headlines and public health messaging.

But scientists are now paying closer attention to another virus that’s been spreading somewhat under the radar: human metapneumovirus (hMPV).

Although it’s not new, hMPV is now being recognised as a significant contributor to seasonal respiratory infections, especially among young children, older people, and people with weaker immune systems.

So what do you need to know about this winter lurgy?

What does a hMPV infection look like?

hMPV is a close relative of RSV, and can cause infections in the upper or lower respiratory tracts.

Like other respiratory viruses, hMPV infection causes symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat and nasal congestion. While most people experience relatively mild illness and recover in about a week, hMPV can lead to serious illness – such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia – in babies, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

hMPV spreads much like the flu or SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID) – through tiny droplets from coughs and sneezes, and potentially by touching surfaces where the virus has landed and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Most people will catch it at some point in their lives, commonly more than once. While an infection confers some immunity, this wanes over time.

hMPV generally follows a seasonal pattern, tending to peak in winter and spring.

    hMPV around the world

By the end of 2024, China saw a surprising spike in cases of hMPV – enough to catch the attention of public health experts. While there were some suggestions hospitals were becoming overwhelmed, exact numbers were not clear.

The World Health Organization subsequently issued a statement in January indicating this rise in hMPV infections in China aligned with expected seasonal trends.

Other countries, such as the United States, have also noted increases in hMPV infections since the COVID pandemic. Realising hMPV might be playing a more significant role in seasonal illness than we’d previously thought, and with improvements in diagnostic technology, global health agencies have ramped up their monitoring.

    Read more:
hMPV may be spreading in China. Here’s what to know about this virus – and why it’s not cause for alarm

In Australia, comprehensive national data on hMPV is limited because hMPV is not one of the viruses with mandatory reporting. In other words, if a patient is found to have hMPV (through a PCR swab sent to a pathology lab) there’s no requirement for the doctor or the pathology lab to make a public health report of a positive result, as they would with another illness such as influenza, RSV or measles.

However, selected medical clinics voluntarily participate in systematic data collection on specific health conditions, which give us an idea of the proportion of people of people who may be infected (though not the absolute numbers).

The Australian Sentinel Practice Research Network (ASPREN) is a national surveillance system funded by the federal department of health. In 2024, up to December 15, based on ASPREN data, 7.8% of patients presenting with fever and cough symptoms tested positive for hMPV.

This year, to June 1, ASPREN data shows us hMPV has made up 4.2% of infections among people with flu-like illness, behind RSV (7.7%), COVID (10.9%), influenza (19%) and rhinovirus (a virus which causes the common cold, 46.1%).

hMPV can hit harder in young children.

    What about vaccines and treatments?

hMPV is likely to be part of the array of respiratory viruses circulating in Australia this winter. If you have a cold or flu-like illness and have done one of those at-home rapid tests for COVID, flu and RSV but came up all negative, it’s possible hMPV is the culprit.

There’s currently no specific treatment or vaccine for hMPV. Most cases are mild and can be managed at home with rest and symptom relief such as taking medication (paracetamol or ibuprofen) for pain and fever. But more serious infections may require hospital care.

If your baby or young child has a respiratory infection and is having trouble breathing, you should take them to the emergency department.

Researchers and companies such as Moderna, Pfizer and Vicebio are actively working on vaccines for hMPV, however they’re not yet available.

The best way to protect yourself and others against hMPV and other respiratory viruses is through simple hygiene practices. These include washing your hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home if you’re sick, cleaning shared surfaces regularly, and considering wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces during virus season.

Lara Herrero receives funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) — A delegation from Lobnya City District of the Moscow Region of the Russian Federation visited Mount Taishan in Shandong Province, where they experienced the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture at the Daimiao Temple and felt the continuity of the spiritual origins of Chinese civilization at the peak of Mount Taishan.

Founded during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), the Daimiao Temple is the largest surviving ancient architectural complex at the foot of Mount Taishan. It was designated a national cultural heritage site by the State Council of China in 1988.

As reported by the Shandong Province information portal “sdchina.com.cn”, on the morning of May 29, the delegation members visited the Daimiao Temple. The ancient buildings and priceless relics, preserving a thousand-year history, aroused genuine interest among the guests. Olga Felyaeva, a member of the delegation, was especially delighted by the majestic “fused cypresses of the Han Dynasty”, whose crowns proudly reach into the sky.

The delegation then ascended to the “Southern Gate of Heaven” /”Nantianmen”/. Since ancient times, Mount Taishan has symbolized the stability of the state and the prosperity of the nation. Despite their prior acquaintance with Mount Taishan, the majestic scenery left an indelible impression on the guests.

“It is a great honor for us to visit Taishan. We hope that more and more tourists will be able to appreciate its unique beauty. Lobnya intends to deepen friendship with the city of Tai’an, expand cultural exchanges and mutual enrichment of civilizations,” said O. Felyaeva.

Sister cities Lobnya /Moscow region/ and Tai’an /Shandong province, eastern China/ have maintained friendly ties since 2006, actively developing cooperation in the fields of culture, sports, education and economics. The current visit has strengthened mutual understanding and trust, taking inter-municipal relations to a new level.

SACRAMENTO, United States, June 10 (Xinhua) — The U.S. state of California on Monday sued the Donald Trump administration for deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid protests against immigration raids, calling it “an undeniable step toward authoritarianism.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Monday that they had filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop the “unlawful and unjustified deployment” of National Guard troops, which they said “has led to an unnecessary escalation of chaos and violence in Los Angeles County.”

The lawsuit names President Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Department of Defense. It alleges that the deployment of National Guard troops violates the U.S. Constitution and exceeds the president’s authority because it was done without the governor’s consent or participation and was unjustified, the governor’s office said in a press release Monday.

The protests initially began in response to immigration enforcement. Tensions between protesters and law enforcement escalated on Friday, with some demonstrators throwing objects and police using tear gas and flash-bang grenades.

In response, Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops on Saturday. Protests intensified on Sunday, with clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers increasing.

“President Trump’s order to deploy federal National Guard troops to Los Angeles over the objections of the Governor and local law enforcement is unnecessary and counterproductive,” California Attorney General Robert Bonta said in a statement Monday.

According to G. Newsom, the deployment of the National Guard is a “man-made crisis.” The state governor accused D. Trump of “deliberately creating chaos, terrorizing the population, and threatening the principles of our great democracy.”

“This is an undoubted step towards authoritarianism. We cannot allow this,” the governor added.

After the lawsuit was announced, Trump wrote on social media that his administration would “fight back” if protesters “spit” on National Guard troops.

On Monday, D. Trump called for the arrest of the governor of California. “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting governor. I hoped I would never see this day in America,” Newsom wrote in response on social media. –0–

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) — U.S. Surgeon General Robert Kennedy Jr. on Monday fired all 17 members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s immunization advisory committee, saying the move would restore public confidence in vaccines.

About two-thirds of the commission’s members were appointed in the final year of the Biden administration, Kennedy Jr. said in announcing his decision in a column for the Wall Street Journal.

“The CDC’s immunization advisers wield enormous influence,” the New York Times commented. They scrutinize vaccine data, debate the evidence, and decide who should get shots and when. Insurance companies and federal health insurance programs like Medicaid are required to pay for vaccines recommended by the committee.

The committee was scheduled to meet from June 25 to 27. It is not yet known when the new members will be announced, but the meeting will go ahead as planned, according to a statement released by the Department of Health and Human Services.

“This is the latest in a series of steps by Mr. Kennedy, a vaccine skeptic, to destroy decades of immunization standards,” the statement said. The advisory committee, which is more aligned with the views of R. Kennedy Jr., could significantly change or even reverse recommendations for immunizations for Americans, including childhood vaccinations. –0–

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: More funding to grow international tourism

    Source: New Zealand Government

The Government is increasing funding for attracting overseas visitors and investing in tourism infrastructure as part of its new Tourism Growth Roadmap, Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says.
“We’re investing $35 million to deliver the first stage of the Roadmap, which sets out the Government’s plan to double the value of tourism,” Louise Upston says.
“International visitors bring billions of dollars into New Zealand, from big ticket spends to everyday purchases in local cafes and accommodation.
“We want to welcome more visitors to New Zealand, and we want our regional communities to improve their capacity to look after those visitors.
“The Government must work with industry to unlock the full potential of our tourism sector, and the Roadmap lays out initiatives and investments to ensure our infrastructure, workforce and communities can support further growth.
“For the 2025/26 financial year, we’re investing $6 million in international marketing across emerging tourism markets, $3 million to increase the number of business events hosted in New Zealand, and an additional $5 million towards the Major Events Fund.
“These commitments follow the recent announcements of $13.5 million invested in international tourism marketing and $4 million of investment towards improving the visitor experience along the Milford Road corridor.
“Recent tourism funding has been about boosting visitor numbers. As those higher numbers become established, the Roadmap will shift over time to focus more on supporting communities to look after them well,” Louise Upston says.
This investment comes from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. This levy is charged to most international visitors, and ensures they are contributing to the public services, facilities and natural environment they will enjoy while in New Zealand.
More information can be found on the MBIE website.
    Notes to editor:
The Tourism Growth Roadmap is attached as a separate document.
New tourism investments for the 2025/26 financial year include:

$6 million in Tourism New Zealand’s marketing in the emerging markets of India and Southeast Asia,
$3 million to increase the number of business events hosted in New Zealand, as part of Tourism New Zealand’s collaboration with Business Events Industry Aotearoa,
An additional $5 million towards the Major Events Fund,
$13.5 million in Tourism New Zealand’s marketing in core markets of Australia, the United States and China,
$4 million towards a wider package of work to improve visitor experiences and reduce congestion along the Milford Road corridor.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Tourism Growth Roadmap speech to Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA)

    Source: New Zealand Government

Tēnā koutou katoa. Thank you for the warm welcome. It is my pleasure to welcome you all to MEETINGS 2025.

First, I would like to acknowledge Mayor Wayne Brown attending MEETINGS 2025 today and a special acknowledgment to Ngāti Whatua Orakei for their pōwhiri and welcome.

I would also like to recognise Tataki Auckland Unlimited and in particular the Auckland Convention Bureau for their dedication and hard work advocating for Auckland as a world-class visitor destination.

Last but not the least, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to some incredible individuals who make events like this possible, a huge thank you again to BEIA Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins and Board Chair Martin Snedden.

Your leadership across the business events in New Zealand and creating such vibrant and energetic gatherings like MEETINGS 2025 are truly appreciated and make a difference to New Zealand.

To our local and international buyers, exhibitors and media – thank you for making the journey from around the world to join us in Auckland.

Events like MEETINGS are so important for bringing incredible opportunities to our regions, building valuable connections with our offshore markets and strengthening our business events sector.

There is no doubt that New Zealand’s business events industry is on the rise – and that’s thanks to the fantastic organisations and individuals like you in this room today.

You are the driving force behind a growing pipeline of high-value deals across sectors. These opportunities are helping boost productivity, support local communities, and grow our regions.

Together, we are putting New Zealand as a top place to do business – and the conversations and connections you make over the next few days will help us even further.

Events like this are a powerful reminder of what it takes to deliver world-class experiences – whether its state-of-the-art venues, exceptional food and catering, smooth logistics, or engaging content.

Beyond their direct economic benefits, business events connect us, foster new ideas and drive innovation across industries. I want to acknowledge the vital role you all play – not just as the professionals of tourism and hospitality, but as ambassadors of New Zealand.

Your commitment lay the foundation for successful events and help position our country as a world leader in the excellence we are known for.

Increasing tourism and creating a strong economy is a key focus for the next few years, and the economic contribution of the business events sector is a critical element to success.

Business events punch well above their weight in attracting high-value international conferences to our regions and main centres throughout the year, and MEETINGS is a prime example of this.

I hope you enjoy your Auckland experience and participate in the amazing visitor experience while you are here.

As Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, I have two priorities for the portfolio.

My first priority is to grow international tourism by both increasing the number of international visitors to New Zealand in the short term, and doubling the value of tourism exports by 2034.

My second priority is to grow the number of Kiwis in tourism and hospitality jobs which will further support our wider economic growth objectives.

Our business events sector plays a huge role in showcasing New Zealand as a progressive, entrepreneurial destination and will play a significant role in achieving our goal of doubling tourism exports.

Business event participants spend an average of $175 more per day than other visitors, and importantly, often visit in the off-peak period between March and November, boosting tourism and economic activity year-round. This is exactly why we are making positive changes to support its growth.

In April, alongside the Minister of Health and the Minister for Regulation, I was thrilled to announce a change to the Medicines Act. The change will allow for medicines to be advertised that have not yet been consented by Medsafe at medical conferences in New Zealand.

This shift removes a long-standing barrier and opens the door to hosting more international medical conferences and trade shows, unlocking an estimated $90 million in future revenue.

On top of that, we’re continuously working to attract high-value incentive business to New Zealand. It’s all part of our effort to make our country a go-to place for significant business events.

As part of my Tourism Boost package, I provided $3 million to Tourism New Zealand to make an additional 15-20 bids for business events in 2026 and beyond through its existing Conference Assistance Programme.

This investment has already supported Tourism New Zealand to win three bids valued at $7.5 million.

Our message is clear, New Zealand is open for business. We are looking forward to welcoming more business events and conferences to New Zealand and hosting them in our great facilities.

Tourism is our second largest export earner and a crucial component of our workforce, and we cannot understate the benefits it provides to our country.

We’re committed to continue growing the sector, which is why today, I am announcing the launch of the Tourism Growth Roadmap. The Roadmap follows my recent Tourism Boost package and is the second step towards doubling our tourism export value by 2034.

The final Roadmap has been carefully developed based on the conversations I have had with industry leaders since taking over the portfolio and reflects what I’ve heard is important to you.

The first package of investment will continue to prioritise increasing international visitor volumes, with around 80 per cent of the investment going towards demand initiatives and 20 per cent towards supply initiatives.

I am also announcing a $35 million investment from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy to deliver the first stage of the Roadmap.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister and I announced $13.5 million in new funding to Tourism New Zealand to uplift marketing activity in our core markets of Australia, the United States and China.

This investment is expected to generate around $300 million in spending and deliver an extra 72,000 international visitors to our shores.

These are big numbers, but this is only part of the full $35 million package we’re unveiling today.

I am also committing a further $6 million in new funding to uplift marketing activity in our emerging markets of India and Southeast Asia.

We know that Tourism New Zealand does an important job of marketing our country internationally, acting as the primary influence for approximately 14 per cent of international holiday visitors. I expect these investments to result in almost $360 million in incremental visitor spend in the economy.

As I have been saying today, I see the business events sector as an incredibly valuable visitor market for supporting tourism growth.

That is why I’m thrilled to announce I am committing an additional $3 million to Tourism New Zealand to boost business events attraction for a further year. This reinforces the important role that all of you play, and I am excited to see the positive outcomes from this investment.

I am also providing a $5 million boost for major events attraction. Major events drive economic benefits to New Zealand through international visitation and additional direct spend in the host region.

To complement these demand initiatives, I am investing in specific regional tourism infrastructure projects.

Last week, alongside Minister Potaka, I announced $4 million to improve visitor experiences along the Milford Road corridor. This investment is co-funded and will be delivered by the Department of Conservation.

As you all know, Milford Sound Piopiotahi is one of our most iconic destinations and a huge drawcard for international visitors. This investment will support improved visitor experiences, infrastructure and reduced congestion.

We have an enormous opportunity on our hands.

Tourism has the potential to become our biggest export earner – we’ve done it before, and I believe we can do it again. It will take significant effort from us all, and the industry is united with shared purpose, aspirations, and enthusiasm.

Achieving this will require action on the supply-side and I have asked my officials to begin a review of our tourism system to support this. This includes looking at issues surrounding our workforce:

    • data
    • infrastructure
    • funding
    • our regions and communities
    • aviation and cruise connectivity
    • and the overall visitor experience that we offer.

We’re looking at what is working well and what do we need to change to ensure we are fit for the future.

The key to our success will be working together.

There is plenty of work to do and I am excited to continue working alongside the tourism and hospitality sector to build on the incredible foundations already in place.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the next few days are packed with opportunities.

New Zealand is open for business, and we welcome the opportunity to attract more business, exhibition and incentive travellers to New Zealand and grow our economy. Together, let’s maximise the value tourism brings to our beautiful country!

    Thank you again.

New ultra-high voltage project begins operation to deliver power from Xinjiang to Chongqing

BEIJING, June 10 — The State Grid Corporation of China on Tuesday announced the operation of the ±800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission project linking eastern Xinjiang’s Hami with southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality.

This marks China’s third major project to transmit electricity from the energy-rich Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to other parts of the country.

The transmission line spans 2,260 kilometers and is supported by 14.2 million kilowatts of installed power capacity, including 10.2 million kilowatts from wind, solar photovoltaic, and solar thermal sources. New energy accounts for over 70 percent of the total capacity.

Xinjiang serves as a key sending hub in China’s west-to-east power transmission program. The new line is expected to deliver more than 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to Chongqing’s power load center, significantly enhancing the municipality’s energy supply capacity.

It is also expected to contribute to economic development in both Xinjiang and Chongqing, enhance regional coordinated development, facilitate rural revitalization, and help improve public welfare, the corporation said.

The corporation now operates the world’s largest ultra-high-voltage transmission network, providing strong support for ensuring a secure and reliable power supply and advancing green, low-carbon development.
