    Huawei Technologies Co has staged a remarkable comeback, reclaiming its leading position in terms of shipments in China’s smartphone market in the second quarter, according to a latest report from market research company International Data Corp.

    This achievement marks Huawei’s return to the summit after a challenging six-year period, with shipments reaching 12.5 million units, capturing an 18.1 percent market share in the country, from April to June this year, IDC said.

    This resurgence not only disrupts the recent dominance of rival brands, but also signifies a pivotal turnaround for Huawei, demonstrating its ability to overcome significant technology restrictions and supply chain hurdles, experts said.

    Will Wong, a senior research manager with IDC’s Asia/Pacific Client Devices Group, said Huawei’s recovery can be attributed to its strong brand appeal and efficient shipment management.

    The company’s recovery is underpinned by explosive growth in specific segments. Foldable smartphone shipments surged by an impressive 240 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, while its flagship Mate series contributed over 45 percent of total shipments, highlighting a robust recovery in the premium handset market.

    Furthermore, the strength of Huawei’s ecosystem is evident as more than 900 million devices in China, including its own-branded products as well as devices from third-party companies, now run on its self-developed operating system HarmonyOS.

    The numbers validate the success of its integrated “hardware plus software plus services” strategy, said Xiang Ligang, director-general of the Zhongguancun Modern Information Consumer Application Industry Technology Alliance, a telecom industry association.

    Huawei’s return is particularly notable given the broader market context. The overall Chinese smartphone market contracted by 4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, with total shipments reaching about 69 million units, IDC said. This decline was driven primarily by weakening consumer demand and a slowdown in growth previously fueled by government subsidies.

    However, Huawei managed to defy the downward trend despite the challenging environment, Xiang said, adding that the company’s return to the top represents a significant reversal.

    Key factors driving Huawei’s resurgence include product innovation, exemplified by the successful launch of the Mate 70 series. Featuring advanced in-house chipsets, superior imaging capabilities and HarmonyOS, the Mate 70 series attracted strong consumer demand, including loyal Huawei users upgrading and even some former Apple customers, Xiang added.

    The company once dominated the Chinese market with a share exceeding 40 percent, but faced severe setbacks following US sanctions, leading to significant market share losses, he said.

    Huawei’s relentless innovation is underpinned by its extraordinary commitment to research and development. Over the past decade, the company has invested a staggering 1.24 trillion yuan ($172.8 billion) in R&D. In 2024 alone, its R&D expenditure reached 179.7 billion yuan, representing 20.8 percent of its annual revenue. Huawei boasts a global portfolio of over 150,000 valid authorized patents, the company said.

    Looking ahead, despite this significant milestone, Huawei faces an intensely competitive landscape where rivals like Apple, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo continue to innovate aggressively. Maintaining its technological edge and product excellence will be critical for Huawei to retain its leadership, experts said.

    Unitree Robotics, a Chinese manufacturer of humanoid robots, has begun preparations for an initial public offering, joining a wave of domestic embodied AI companies in tapping the capital market as they race to become globally leading robotics firms.

    While Unitree has yet to disclose its intended market for a flotation, several sources told China Daily that China’s STAR Market on the Shanghai Stock Exchange is the likeliest destination.

    According to a filing posted on the website of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, the company is under the listing guidance of CITIC Securities. The company could file its IPO as early as October.

    Founded by Wang Xingxing, Unitree focuses on the high-performance humanoid and quadruped robots. Wang controls roughly 34.8 percent of the firm through direct and indirect holdings.

    The Hangzhou, Zhejiang province-based startup’s G1 humanoid robot surprised viewers in January when 16 such robots performed a dance routine on China’s Spring Festival Gala, which was viewed 16.8 billion times.

    Wang has said previously that the company’s annual revenue has surpassed 1 billion yuan ($137 million) and that it has been making a profit since 2020, which industry experts said is a rare feat in the capital-intensive robotics field.

    Compared with counterparts in the United States, Chinese robotics makers are mass-producing humanoid robots for consumers at cheaper prices.

    Unitree’s G1 is priced at 99,000 yuan ($13,600). After the company became widely known, the humanoid robot has been frequently spotted at meetings, in restaurants, and in various galas as well as activities.

    In addition to the humanoid robots, Unitree also offers the Go2 robotic dog, starting at 9,997 yuan, along with various accessories. The Go2 series has been well-received for its versatility and affordability, making it a popular choice among tech enthusiasts.

    Unitree’s IPO push comes amid a red-hot summer of fundraising across China’s embodied AI sector, a field combining robotics and artificial intelligence to enable machines with physical agency in the real world.

    Earlier this month, humanoid robot startup AgiBot made headlines with a bold move to gain control of a material company via equity transfer and tender offer, which was seen by many industry insiders as a back-door listing play aimed at fast-tracking onto the STAR Market.

    Meanwhile, early-stage fundraising has surged.

    In July alone, several players in the embodied AI sector disclosed fresh financing rounds, drawing heavyweight backers including Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group, and Geely.

    According to data from tech-focused ITjuzi.com, China’s embodied AI industry saw 133 investment events totaling over 18 billion yuan as of last week, already surpassing the full-year 2023 figures by both volume as well as value.

    Rick Xiong, general manager of the Beijing Embodied Artificial Intelligence Robotics Innovation Center, said: “These combined efforts will shape the future in our favor. Chinese robot companies have the right timing, the right place and the right people to accelerate the humanoid robot push.”

    Xiong said that leading Western countries have witnessed deep-pocketed industry giants dominating the robot landscape, whereas China has been characterized by a proliferation of small to medium-sized enterprises striving to navigate the competitive terrain of humanoid robots.

    He also said that the rise of artificial intelligence large language models, exemplified by technologies like ChatGPT, has been a game-changer in the robotics industry.

    While investor enthusiasm remains high, industry insiders said the real challenge lies in large-scale commercialization. Analysts see a growing divide between players chasing hype and those delivering viable applications.

    Wang from Unitree recently predicted that humanoid robots would be widely used in industries and services within three to five years, with early adoption in hazardous or repetitive environments.

    Wang Feili, a machinery analyst at UBS Securities, echoed that view, saying humanoid robots will likely first land in factories and service settings before entering households. “Industrial scenarios are less complex and more tolerant of cost, whereas consumers expect versatile capabilities — the bar is much higher at home,” she said.

    Manchester United has completed the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo on a five-year contract for a fee of 65 million pounds (about 88 million U.S. dollars), with the deal contemplating a further six million pounds in incentives.

    The Cameroon international is United’s third signing of the summer after the arrivals of striker Matheus Cunha and defender Diego Leon, and the winger arrives when it seems as if Marcus Rashford is on the verge of joining FC Barcelona on a season-long loan.

    The transfer ends a saga that has lasted all summer, with Manchester United making its initial offer a month and a half ago.

    “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” said Mbeumo on the club’s official website.

    Mbeumo will now almost certainly form part of United’s pre-season tour to the United States that starts on Thursday.

    Mbeumo scored 70 goals and gave 51 assists in 242 games for Brentford, with 20 of those goals coming last season as the south London club just missed out on a place in Europe.

    A sizable asset in the making, or a liability in transition? China’s towering phenom Zhang Ziyu has turned heads at her home Asia Cup, leaving the basketball world wonder how such a unique talent could fit into the fast-paced modern game.

    Standing 2.26 meters tall (7-foot-5), with her giant presence a spectacle to behold, China’s 18-year-old center Zhang, dubbed “Baby-face Shaq” by fans, couldn’t hide from the attention at the FIBA Asia Cup in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, where her insurmountable advantage under the rim, as apparent as her weakness in mobility, agility and conditioning, was put on full display.

    Limited by head coach Gong Luming to 14 minutes of court time per game, Zhang finished her international debut at the senior level with a team-high 15.6 points on average across five games, ranking second overall after Lebanon’s Rebecca Akl (16.5).

    Despite being triple teamed whenever she played, Zhang proved almost unstoppable near the basket, easily posting defenders up with her bulk to score free points as long as she settled deep enough in the paint.

    Her slow legs and lack of athleticism, however, took a heavy toll on her game, significantly limiting her defensive coverage and threat in offensive transition.

    As currently the world’s tallest professional female player, Zhang could only contribute 0.4 blocks and 5.6 rebounds per game in Shenzhen, ranking 18th and 14th, respectively, in two key stats that measure a post player’s impact.

    A raw talent playing the game, literally, on a level of her own, Zhang’s emergence is sure to pose a huge challenge for opponents as Team China looks to build its future around her.

    “She’s an extraordinary talent with an untapped potential, and could be a huge asset for Chinese women’s basketball if developed in the right way,” Gong said of Zhang’s performance after Team China beat South Korea 101-66 in Sunday’s bronze-medal playoff to finish third on the podium.

    “She obviously lacks experience at this level, and has so much catching-up to do to get used to the physicality and pace of the senior game.

    “Defensively, she has to improve her movement and rebounding, while, offensively, we hope she can develop a more versatile skillset and get more involved in making plays for teammates.

    “She has a long career ahead of her and a vast room for improvement. This was just her first test at the senior level, and I feel like we put way too much expectation on her, which didn’t help,” said Gong, who returned to the team just three months ago for a second stint after guiding the women’s squad to the 2001 Asia championship and 2002 Asian Games titles.

    Zhang’s current incompatibility with the fast-paced, high-intensity game was exposed in Team China’s disappointing 90-81 semifinal loss to Japan, where the host’s strength in the paint was neutralized by Japan’s run-and-gun game, which featured sharp shooting, spacing and quick transition.

    China’s slow-rotating zone defense, with Zhang settled deep down court whenever she’s in the game, allowed Japan’s teen star Kokoro Tanaka too many uncontested shots on the perimeter, where Japan hit 16 three-pointers, 10 more than China did, to upset the host in front of its home fans.

    Corey Gaines, Japan’s head coach, attributed the critical win to his team’s perfect execution of a game plan tailored against the host’s “too obvious” advantage, following two warm-up losses to Team China last month.

    Still, Zhang’s rise to stardom as a potential game-changer on the international stage will be inevitable, according to Australian legend Lauren Jackson.

    The five-time Olympic medalist said she’s been following Zhang’s game as a fan, and feels excited for her future as a star in the making following the NBA Rising Star tournament in Singapore earlier this month.

    “She’s starting to learn the women’s game after graduating from age-grade basketball, and I just hope she’s enjoying every minute, because, before too long, she is going to be the center of everybody’s attention and dominating the FIBA game,” Jackson told ESPN.

    “Obviously she’s super tall, but the way she plays, she certainly has the ability to completely dominate, purely because of her height,” said the 44-year-old former WNBA star.

    “In saying that, she’s got great touch around the ring, she can catch and she’s got a big, strong body, and has the ability to finish under pressure with three or four people hanging off her.

    “It’s exciting to think about where she’s going to go in the game, and what she’s going to do,” said Jackson, a dominant 1.98-meter center in her prime, who retired after helping Australia qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

    Playing in a major home tournament as a teenager was a perfect start for Zhang, and the next big experience is something Jackson has lived and breathed herself — a potential call from the WNBA.

    The high expectations, though, could be a burden that Zhang will need some extra help and support to overcome, said Jackson, who made her major international debut for the Opals at the 1998 world championships and became a big name at the Sydney Olympics.

    “The Australian team, our coach and the team manager made an effort of trying to protect me from the media and the external pressures. In our lead-in games to Sydney, they made sure I wasn’t doing much media and things like that,” she recalls.

    “It was a very strange, surreal time, and I was ignorant to how much pressure was probably on me. I hope she has the same support as I had to help her out.”

    “In the opening set we made too many mistakes, but then we proved we were able to beat them. On Wednesday we should stay focused from the beginning until the end. We are ready for the challenge. I’m sure the friendly game helped us in our preparations for the encounter in the Volleyball Nations League,” she added.

    Poland is preparing for a tough challenge, as it has lost all three matches against China under coach Stefano Lavarini, failing to win a single set. Two years ago, China eliminated Poland in the women’s VNL semifinals.

    “Our team has changed from that time. In the past we often fought against our weaknesses on the court. Now we’re a more experienced team. We know what it’s like to compete for high stakes,” Poland’s outside hitter Martyna Czyrnianska explained.

    The final phase of the Women’s VNL will be held from July 23 to 27.

    China’s commemoration of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War is not to incite hatred, but to inspire the global pursuit of peace, a senior Chinese scholar said on Monday.

    “This triumph crushed Japanese militarists’ colonial ambitions against China,” said Wang Junwei, director of the Academic and Editorial Committee of the Institute of Party History and Literature of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

    “It also ended China’s national humiliation from repeated defeats to foreign aggression in modern times,” he added at a press conference.

    “The victory restored China’s standing as a major country, earning its people the respect from peace-loving nations,” Wang stated.

    “Critically, it fortified the Chinese people’s resolve for national independence, freedom and liberation,” the scholar told the media.

    He noted that victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression marked a historic turning point for the Chinese nation, transforming its journey from enduring significant crises to achieving great rejuvenation, and that this event is considered an integral part of the World Anti-Fascist War.

    “By condemning and exposing the aggressor’s brutal atrocities and serious catastrophes brought to the humanity, we work jointly to prevent the recurrence of such historical tragedies, securing peaceful progress for all peoples,” Wang said.

    China has designated Sept. 3 as Victory Day to commemorate the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on Sept. 2, 1945. To mark the 80th anniversary of this victory, the country will hold a military parade in Beijing on Sept. 3, along with ceremonies to confer medals, international seminars and other memorial activities.

    The Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was fought from 1931 to 1945. It was the first major conflict and the longest-running campaign in the World Anti-Fascist War. The war resulted in over 35 million Chinese military and civilian casualties.

    A Chinese research team has achieved a world-leading breakthrough in quantum technology by developing an entangled light source with near-perfect fidelity, according to Sun Yat-sen University in south China’s Guangzhou.

    The research, published online in Nature, was led by Wang Xuehua and Liu Jin, two professors from the university’s School of Physics.

    It will provide critical support for the development of next-generation quantum precision measurement technologies and the construction of functional photonic quantum information processing chips, Wang said.

    The theoretical prediction of spontaneous two-photon emission dates back to the 1960s. However, the generation probability of these “twin” photons was typically far lower than that of single photons, making experimental observation nearly impossible.

    Despite numerous experimental attempts by international research teams over the past four decades, the field has seen no substantive breakthroughs.

    Recent breakthroughs in semiconductor material growth and device processing techniques have provided essential support for experimentally realizing this phenomenon.

    “We designed an ultrahigh-quality optical microcavity and precisely controlled the photon generation process at the micro-nano scale,” said Liu Shunfa, the paper’s first author and an associate professor at Sun Yat-sen University.

    This microcavity creates a dedicated pathway for generating the “twin” photons, boosting the two-photon radiation efficiency from less than 0.1 percent to approximately 50 percent in experiments. The breakthrough makes the preparation of a controllable, triggered entangled photon-pair source feasible, Liu said.

    “We’ve essentially built a dedicated ‘photon factory’ on the nanoscale for producing entangled photons,” Liu explained.

    The research, based on a nano-sized solid-state “artificial atom” structure, introduced the cavity-induced spontaneous two-photon emission scheme.

    It pioneered the achievement of spontaneous two-photon radiation intensity matching single-photon levels and successfully produced the novel on-demand triggered entangled photon-pair source with 99.4 percent fidelity.

    “The results indicate an extremely high degree of ‘psychic connection’ between our entangled photons, and demonstrates the great potential of this technology for enhancing quantum communication security, quantum computing reliability, and quantum metrology precision,” Liu said.

    Reviewers at Nature highly praised the work, calling it a groundbreaking advance in the field of two-photon research and noting that it achieves entangled photon pairs with record-high fidelity.

    BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) — China has released guidelines to accelerate digital education this year. Based on three years of experience summarizing the national digital education strategy, Chinese authorities have put forward comprehensive work plans to further advance national digital education.

    How far has digital education progressed in China now and how will it develop in the future?

    A BREAKTHROUGH IN DIGITAL EDUCATION

    In 2022, the state public service platform for intellectual education was opened, marking the official launch of the national digital education strategy.

    After three years of development, this platform integrates 5 sub-platforms and has access to 32 provincial-level platforms. It has registered more than 163 million users and the number of visits and views on the platform has exceeded 60.8 billion times.

    At the same time, the platform has launched more than 110 thousand educational resources for primary and secondary schools, more than 11 thousand high-quality online courses for vocational education and 31 thousand courses for higher education.

    “Over the past three years, breakthroughs have been made in implementing the national digital education strategy and the world’s largest platform for public learning resources and services and a lifelong public learning platform have been established,” said Zhou Dawan, head of the Department of Science, Technology and Information Technology of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

    At present, digital education in China is being comprehensively promoted with faster speed and efficiency. All schools at different levels in China are connected to the Internet, and more than 75% of schools have wireless network coverage. In addition, new infrastructure has been built in many places to build provincial-level intelligent education platforms.

    “In the future, it is necessary to work hard to build a diversified system of platforms, catalog systems, resources, data and application systems, and improve the platform’s intelligence level to create a digital base with high intelligence and strong interaction,” said Yang Zongkai, head of the advisory committee of experts on digital education at the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

    AI IN EDUCATION REFORM

    Nowadays, the application of artificial intelligence is becoming a hot topic in the field of education. From cities to rural areas, many educational institutions have begun to study specific areas of application of artificial intelligence.

    In March this year, China released the intelligent version of the national intelligent education platform 2.0 and launched an “artificial intelligence testing ground” to promote innovation in human-computer interaction.

    Zhou Dawan noted that in the future, the “AI testing ground” will be improved, focusing on four main aspects – student learning, teacher teaching, educational management and scientific research, and the innovative forces of high-level universities and enterprises will be combined to develop promising practical AI tools.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: Deadly floods show need for faster, wider warnings, UN agency says

    The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Monday that more intense downpours and glacier outburst floods are becoming increasingly frequent, with deadly consequences for communities caught off guard.

    “Flash floods are not new, but their frequency and intensity are increasing in many regions due to rapid urbanization, land-use change and a changing climate,” said Stefan Uhlenbrook, WMO Director of Hydrology, Water and Cryosphere.

    Each additional degree Celsius of warming enables the air to hold about 7 per cent more water vapour.

    “This is increasing the risk of more extreme rainfall events. At the same time, glacier-related flood hazards are increasing due to enhanced ice melting in a warmer climate,” he added.

    Thousands of lives lost every year

    Floods and flash floods claim thousands of lives each year and cause billions of dollars in damage. In 2020, severe flooding across South Asia killed more than 6,500 people and caused $105 billion in economic losses.

    Two years later, catastrophic floods in Pakistan left over 1,700 people dead, 33 million affected and losses exceeding $40 billion, reversing years of development gains.

    This year, the onslaught has continued. In July alone, South Asia, East Asia and the United States have seen a string of deadly events, from monsoon rains to glacial lake bursts and sudden flash floods.

    Each year, extreme weather and climate events take a massive toll on lives and economies worldwide.

    Asia reels from monsoon onslaught

    In India and Pakistan, heavy monsoon rains have severed transport links, washed away homes and triggered landslides. Pakistan declared a state of emergency in its worst-hit areas, deploying military helicopters for rescue missions after forecasters warned of exceptional flood risk along the upper Jhelum River.

    The Republic of Korea suffered record-breaking downpours between 16-20 July, with rainfall exceeding 115 mm per hour in some locations. At least 18 people were killed and more than 13,000 were evacuated.

    In southern China, authorities issued flash flood and landslide alerts on 21 July, just a day after Typhoon Wipha battered Hong Kong, underscoring the compound risks of sequential storms.

    Texas flash flood strikes overnight

    Overnight 3 into 4 July, a sudden deluge turned Texas Hill Country into a disaster zone, killing more than 100 people and leaving dozens missing. In a few hours, 10-18 inches (25–46 cm) of rain swamped the Guadalupe River basin, sending the river surging 26 feet (8 metres) in just 45 minutes.

    Many of the victims were young girls at a summer camp, caught unaware as floodwaters tore through sleeping quarters around 4 AM. Although the US National Weather Service issued warnings ahead of time, local sirens were lacking and the final alerts came when most were asleep.

    Glacier outburst floods surge

    Not all floods this month were caused by rain.

    In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, a sudden outburst from a supraglacial lake – formed on a glacier’s surface – swept away hydropower plants, a major bridge and trade routes on 7 July. At least 11 people were killed and more than a dozen are reported missing.

    Scientists at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), a WMO partner, say glacial-origin floods in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region are occurring far more often than two decades ago, when one might strike every five to 10 years.

    In May and June 2025 alone, three glacial outburst floods hit Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan, with two more in Nepal on 7 July. If warming continues, the risk of such floods could triple by the century’s end.

    Closing the warning gap

    The WMO is stepping up efforts to improve flood forecasting through its global initiative and real-time guidance platform, now used in over 70 countries.

    The system integrates satellite data, radar and high-resolution weather models to flag threats hours in advance and is being expanded into a country-led, globally interoperable framework.

    A 2022 World Bank study estimated that 1.81 billion people – nearly a quarter of the world’s population – are directly exposed to 1-in-100-year flood events, with 89 per cent living in low- and middle-income countries.

    The UN’s Early Warnings for All initiative aims to ensure that everyone, everywhere, is protected by early warning systems by 2027.

    Eighteen-year-old Mark scrolls Instagram late at night, watching videos of fitness influencers showing off muscle gains and lifting the equivalent of a baby elephant off the gym floor.

    Spurred on by hashtags and usernames indicating these feats involve steroids, soon Mark is online, ordering his first “steroid cycle”. No script, no warnings, just vials in the mail and the promise of “gains”.

    A few weeks later, he’s posting progress shots and getting tagged as #MegaMark. He’s pleased. But what if I told you Mark was unknowingly injecting toxic chemicals?

    In our new research we tested products sold in Australia’s underground steroid market and found many were mislabelled or missing the expected steroid entirely.

    Even more concerning, several contained heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and cadmium. These substances are known to cause cancer, heart disease and organ failure.

    What are anabolic steroids, and who is using them?

    Anabolic steroids are synthetic drugs designed to mimic the effects of testosterone. Medical professionals sometimes prescribe them for specific health conditions (for example, hypogonadism, where the body isn’t making enough sex hormones). But they are more commonly taken by people looking to increase muscle size, improve athletic performance, or elevate feelings of wellbeing.

    In Australia, it’s illegal to possess steroids without a prescription. This offence can attract large fines and prison terms (up to 25 years in Queensland).

    Despite this, they’re widely available online and from your local “gym bro”. So it’s not surprising we’re seeing escalating use, particularly among young men and women.

    People usually take steroids as pills and capsules or injectable oil- or water-based products. But while many people assume these products are safe if used correctly, they’re made outside regulated settings, with no official quality checks.

    Our research

    For this new study, we analysed 28 steroid products acquired from people all over Australia which they’d purchased either online or from peers in the gym. These included 16 injectable oils, ten varieties of oral tablets, and two “raw” powders.

    An independent forensic lab tested the samples for active ingredients, contaminants and heavy metals. We then compared the results against what people thought they were taking.

    More than half of the samples were mislabelled or contained the wrong drug. For example, one product labelled as testosterone enanthate (200mg/mL) contained 159mg/mL of trenbolone (a potent type of steroid) and no detectable testosterone. Oxandrolone (also known as “Anavar”, another type of steroid) tablets were sold claiming a strength of 10mg but actually contained 6.8mg, showing a disparity in purity.

    Just four products matched their expected compound and purity within a 5% margin.

    But the biggest concern was that all steroids we analysed were contaminated with some level of heavy metals, including lead, arsenic and cadmium.

    While all of the concentrations we detected were within daily exposure limits regarded as safe by health authorities, more frequent and heavier use of these drugs would quickly see people who use steroids exceed safe thresholds. And we know this happens.

    If consumed above safe limits, research suggests lead can damage the brain and heart. Arsenic is a proven carcinogen, having been linked to the development of skin, liver and lung cancers.

    People who use steroids often dose for weeks or months, and sometimes stack multiple drugs, so these metals would build up. This means long‑term steroid use could be quietly fuelling cognitive decline, organ failure, and even cancer.

    What needs to happen next?

    Heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and cadmium often contaminate anabolic steroid products because raw powders sourced from some manufacturers, particularly those in China, may be produced with poor quality control and impure starting materials. These metals can enter the supply chain during synthesis, handling, or from contaminated equipment and solvents, leading to their presence in the final products.

    Steroid use isn’t going away, so we need to address the potential health harms from these contaminants.

    While pill testing is now common at festivals for drugs such as ecstasy, testing anabolic steroids requires more complex chemical analysis that cannot be conducted on-site. Current steroid testing relies on advanced laboratory techniques, which limits availability mostly to specialised research programs such as those in Australia and Switzerland.

    We need to invest properly in a national steroid surveillance and testing network, which will give us data‑driven insights to inform targeted interventions.

    This should involve nationwide steroid testing programs integrated with needle‑and‑syringe programs and community health services which steroid-using communities are aware of and engage with.

    We also need to see peer‑led support through trusted programs to educate people who use steroids around the risks. The programs should be based in real evidence, and developed by people with lived experience of steroid use, in partnership with researchers and clinicians.

    China on Monday called on the European Union (EU) to stop damaging the legitimate interests of Chinese enterprises without any factual ground, and said it will take necessary measures to protect their lawful rights and interests.

    Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at the daily press briefing when asked to comment on the EU’s latest sanctions against Russia, which involve multiple Chinese enterprises and banks.

    “I would like to emphasize that China has always opposed unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international laws and are not authorized by the UN Security Council,” Guo said.

    Regarding the Ukraine crisis, he said China has been committed to promoting peace talks, has never provided lethal weapons to the conflicting parties, and has exercised strict control over the export of dual-use items.

    The normal exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian enterprises should not be interfered with or affected, he added.

    Chinese Premier Li Qiang has signed a State Council decree that unveils regulations to boost the high-quality development of the housing rental market and facilitate establishing a housing system that supports both housing rentals and purchases.

    The new regulations, which will go into effect on Sept. 15, emphasize the integration of the market’s leading role and government guidance in the sector’s development. It also encourages more supply of rental housing through multiple channels and fostering market-oriented, professional housing rental enterprises.

    The document specifies regulations on rental activities, as well as the behaviors of housing rental enterprises and brokerage agencies. Rental brokerage agencies must verify and record the information of the entrusting parties, conduct on-site inspections of the properties before listing, and clearly mark the prices of their services, it says.

    The regulations underline improved supervision and management of the housing rental sector. Governments of cities and above with subsidiary districts should establish monitoring mechanisms on housing rents and publish rental price levels regularly.

    Strict legal responsibilities are stipulated for the illegal actions of lessors, tenants, housing rental enterprises, brokerage agencies and relevant government department staff, according to the document.

    The Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has surpassed 59,000 since the outbreak of the conflict on Oct. 7, 2023, the Gaza-based health authorities said on Monday.

    In a press statement, the health authorities said that a total of 59,029 Palestinians have been killed and 142,135 others injured in the ongoing Israeli military operations.

    The health authorities added that 8,196 fatalities and 30,094 injuries were recorded since March 18, reflecting a surge in hostilities in recent weeks.

    According to the latest update, 134 bodies were transferred to Gaza hospitals in the past 24 hours. Additionally, 1,155 people sustained various injuries due to continued airstrikes and shelling during the period, the authorities said, warning of a potential rise in the figure as many victims were still trapped beneath the rubble.

    Both local and international humanitarian organizations have voiced growing alarm over what they described as the “rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation,” and the failure of aid mechanisms to ensure safe and effective delivery.

    “There is an urgent need to establish secure humanitarian corridors and guarantee the safety of civilians attempting to access life-saving supplies,” said a joint statement from NGOs operating in the Gaza Strip.

    Medical sources in Gaza also warned that hospitals and health centers across the enclave are operating under extreme pressure and facing severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and fuel, in addition to ongoing power outages, which pose serious risks to thousands of patients, especially those in critical condition and newborns relying on incubators powered by electricity.

    The United Nations and several regional organizations have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of internationally monitored aid routes, but efforts toward a durable humanitarian solution have yet to yield results.

    Health experts, policymakers, and researchers on Monday began a three-day meeting in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, to accelerate the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B across Africa.

    The event, held under the theme “Unifying Actions, Transforming Futures: Achieving Triple Elimination in Africa by 2030,” is dubbed as Africa’s first-ever high-level conference focused on the triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.

    Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, represented by Vice President Jessica Alupo, emphasized the importance of unity and innovation in tackling the continent’s health challenges, especially in the face of shifting global health priorities and diminishing funding.

    “As Africa, and as a global community, we must act with unity, innovation, and purpose to advance maternal and child health and eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B,” said Museveni.

    He noted that the interconnected epidemics of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B pose a significant burden to public health, particularly through mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

    Uganda’s Minister of Health Ruth Aceng told the gathering that while progress has been made in HIV prevention, care, and treatment, major challenges persist, particularly in addressing syphilis and hepatitis B.

    She said that by the end of 2024, Africa had approximately 26.3 million people living with HIV, accounting for 65 percent of the global total. Meanwhile, syphilis cases are rising worldwide, with eight million adults infected, 700,000 congenital cases, and 230,000 deaths annually.

    While Africa has recorded the highest increase in syphilis cases globally, with only Botswana and Namibia currently on track to eliminate mother-to-child transmission, 65 million people across the continent are chronically infected with hepatitis B, contributing 63 percent of the world’s new infections, the minister added.

    “Integration is the way to go now, especially in this era of unprecedented funding challenges, where we are already seeing a reduction in funding from development partners,” said Aceng.

    According to the event organizers, the conference aligns with the World Health Organization’s 2030 disease elimination targets and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, both of which envision a healthier, more resilient Africa.

    A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the European Union’s (EU) decision to include Chinese companies and financial institutions in its 18th round of sanctions against Russia.

    Responding to a media inquiry, the spokesperson said the EU had disregarded China’s multiple representations and objections by unilaterally including Chinese companies in its sanctions list and imposing penalties on two Chinese financial institutions based on groundless accusations.

    The spokesperson emphasized that China consistently opposes unilateral sanctions that lack basis in international law and authorization from the United Nations Security Council.

    The EU’s actions contradict the consensus reached between Chinese and EU leaders, and will seriously undermine China-EU economic and trade ties as well as financial cooperation, the spokesperson added.

    China urges the EU to immediately cease its erroneous practice of including Chinese enterprises and financial institutions in its sanctions list, the spokesperson said.     Li Zhengxiang, chairman of the Hubei Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center, stated that the center is currently one of China’s largest and most scenario-rich innovation hubs for humanoid robotics. “Through a five-dimensional approach featuring platform leadership, industrial cluster development, financial support, talent empowerment and application scenario implementation, we will build a nationally influential ecosystem for the humanoid robotics industry,” he said.

    Zhao Xingwei, legal representative of JCBot and professor at the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), explained that JCBot has achieved industrialization with technical support from the team of academicians at HUST. The company’s products currently serve over 10 application fields, including industrial production, cultural tourism, emergency firefighting, inspection and warehousing. He emphasized JCBot will continue advancing R&D to expand into higher-value applications and support industrial upgrading.

    During the new product launch session, Lou Kaiqi, deputy general manager of Hubei Optics Valley Dongzhi Embodied Intelligence Technology Co. Ltd., unveiled the company’s new humanoid robot model. Lou explained that the robot has already been deployed in various applications including exhibition hall docent services, retail guidance, reception duties and commercial performances, with plans for future expansion into government services, industrial operations, elderly care and other sectors.

    Shao Renjie, deputy director of integration at Hubei Kofon Intelligent Transmission Co. Ltd., unveiled a new drive joint module for humanoid robots at the event. The module integrates core components including high-torque motors, reducers and controllers, featuring high power density, precision control and lightweight design to meet dexterous movement requirements for humanoid robots. Shao noted that the launch of this module helps fill critical gaps in Hubei’s supply chain for humanoid robotics core components, strengthening local industrial self-sufficiency and control capabilities.

    At the matchmaking conference, the Hubei Humanoid Robotics Industry Alliance signed strategic cooperation framework agreements with three partners: the Zhejiang Robot Industry Association, the National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center, and the Zhongguancun Rongzhi Specialized Robotics Alliance. Under the agreements, the four parties will collaborate deeply on technology R&D, market expansion and talent exchange to build a stronger robotics ecosystem, enabling resource sharing and complementary advantages to collectively enhance competitiveness in humanoid robotics.

    China added two silver medals to its tally at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships on Monday, with 17-year-old Guo Muye placing second in the men’s solo free routine and twin sisters Lin Yanhan and Lin Yanjun finishing runners-up in the women’s duet technical final.

    In the preliminaries, the Lin sisters had ranked second overall with a score of 301.0933 points, securing their place in the 12-pair final.

    Performing a routine themed “Warriors of moon shadow”, Lin Yanhan and Lin Yanjun earned 301.4057 points for the silver, finishing behind Austrian sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri. The bronze medal went to neutral athletes Mayya Doroshko and Tatiana Gayday.

    “I think both the Austrian team and the neutral athletes delivered performances that are truly worth learning from,” Lin Yanhan said. “We went back and watched their videos after the preliminary round, and it was clear there’s still a significant gap between us. We know we have a lot of room for improvement.”

    Earlier on Monday, Guo, who had finished fourth in his men’s solo technical final last Saturday, delivered a strong performance in the men’s solo free routine to secure the silver medal with 220.1926 points. The gold went to Aleksandr Maltsev, who tallied 229.5613 points, while Italy’s Filippo Pelati took bronze with 213.9850.

    “I feel quite happy about winning this medal,” Guo said. “But this is not yet a gold, so I still have much to work on. I need to improve the height and lines of my routines, as well as my eye contact and interaction with the judges.”

    Beneath neon lights and the glow of a towering outdoor screen, a voice rang out – “Goal for Huai’an!” The shout cut through the air, momentarily halting Wuxi local Yuan Yijun mid-bite, her hands suspending a plump crayfish midair.

    “Suddenly,” Yuan laughed, “even my beloved crayfish didn’t taste as good.”

    On July 20, the 1.38-kilometer-long Hubin Commercial Street in Wuxi’s Binhu District, east China’s Jiangsu Province, turned into a stadium of its own. It was lined not with bleachers, but with steaming night market stalls, rows of folding chairs and hungry, hyped-up fans.

    The Sunday night saw Wuxi host Huai’an in a much-anticipated match of the wildly popular Chinese grassroots league known as the Su Super League, or “Su Chao.” Online, fans dubbed the derby the “Honey peach vs. Crayfish,” a playful reference to the two cities’ culinary claims to fame.

    “For us, eating crayfish is our own way of cheering for the Wuxi team,” Yuan said, gesturing to the pool of chili oil and glistening carapaces before her.

    “Honestly, I’m not even a hardcore fan. My friends and I came here to hang out, snack and soak up the vibe. It’s all about the ambience,” she added.

    Inside the stadium, chants rattled the rafters. Outside, every goal lit up the squares and parks. On social media, memes and banter about the quirky faceoff spread like wildfire. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup remaining a distant glimmer on the horizon, “Su Chao” has already ignited a football fever in China.

    Since its kickoff in May, the city-based amateur league has drawn staggering attention, with peak single-game attendance surpassing 60,000, over a million fans scrambling for tickets each round and short video platform impressions soaring past 10 billion.

    The July 20 match coincided with the opening of Hubin Commercial Street’s summer shopping festival, infusing the street with an almost orchestral tempo. Over 370 renowned eateries lined the street, but none drew more eager crowds than the competing crayfish stands.

    “This street is famous for its crayfish-fueled night market,” said Ji Chenjie, deputy general manager of a company running the commercial street. “Tonight, we counted nearly 40,000 visitors. Many merchants took it upon themselves to ride the ‘Su Chao’ wave. Some even set up pop-up stalls in whatever open space was left.”

    Even for the vendors, team loyalty was a delicious dilemma. “As someone from Huai’an now doing business in Wuxi, I had mixed feelings,” admitted Sun Wei, a crayfish shop owner originally from Huai’an’s Xuyi County, which is renowned for its crayfish industry.

    Wuxi narrowly lost 2-1 in the Sunday clash, but Sun was far from disappointed. “The city may have lost on the pitch, but it has won in business. I’m all smiles.”

    According to Ji, the commercial complex has been transformed into a vast, pulsing network of viewing points, with three enormous LED screens beamed matches live and over 40 shops streaming the game indoors. “Even if you’re dining inside, just glance up, and you’re still part of the action,” she said. “It’s full immersion.”

    The “Su Chao” boom has also inspired a flood of creative merchandising. “We’re blending football with food, local crafts and street cultures. Everything from themed menus to local handicrafts and folk art is popping up,” Ji added. “It’s about sport, but also about storytelling and culture.”

    Elsewhere in Jiangsu, similar scenes repeat nightly, as the grassroots league is sparking new life into summer nightlife economies. In Wuxi alone, city authorities have designated 43 public viewing sites for fans to gather, ranging from bustling plazas and parks to neighborhood squares.

    For visiting Huai’an fan Chen Hongzhi, watching the match in Wuxi was only part of a longer holiday. “We watched the game, then took the kids to explore the Ling Shan scenic area,” he said. “They even gave out free peaches to our Huai’an fans! We’re staying a few more days to visit some other attractions.”

    Statistics show that the Ling Shan scenic area drew 40,000 tourists over the weekend, over 60 percent of whom came from Huai’an.

    “Winning or losing in the league doesn’t matter that much,” Chen said. “What matters is that people are part of something – part of a city, part of a story, part of the joy.”

    “I’ve been a football fan for years, but I never thought I’d see football become so woven into our everyday life,” he reflected. “It’s something new. It’s almost moving.”

  • MIL-OSI China: China weaves stronger transport networks in 14th Five-Year Plan period

    BEIJING, July 21 — Over the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China has woven a more integrated and multidimensional transport network, making sweeping progress that has enhanced connectivity and underpinned economic growth.

    By the end of 2024, six out of 17 major transport targets set in the plan had been achieved ahead of schedule, including expressway and urban rail lengths, access to express parcel delivery in villages, and the share of new energy buses in urban public transport, Minister of Transport Liu Wei told a press conference on Monday.

    The remaining targets are expected to be achieved by the end of this year, the minister added.

    Liu noted that over the past five years, China’s transport sector has achieved “historic progress,” with over 90 percent of the core framework of the national comprehensive transport network already in place.

    Behind this progress is robust investment. From 2021 to 2024, fixed-asset investment in transport totaled 15.2 trillion yuan (about 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars), a 23.3 percent increase from the previous cycle.

    INTEGRATED CONNECTIVITY

    Stretching across land, sea and sky, China’s transport networks have evolved into vital arteries powering the country’s modernization.

    By the end of 2024, China’s railway network had reached 162,000 km in total operating length, an increase of about 16,000 km from the end of 2020. Of this, high-speed rail expanded by 10,000 km to exceed 48,000 km, covering 97 percent of cities with populations over 500,000.

    Highways stretched to 5.49 million km, up 290,000 km from five years earlier. Expressways accounted for 191,000 km, covering 99 percent of cities with a population of over 200,000.

    Certified civil airports increased to 263 by the end of 2024, 22 more than in 2020, Liu said, adding that air services now cover over 91 percent of the country’s population.

    In urban commuting, a diversified public transport system has provided strong support for daily mobility. Each day, about 100 million urban trips are made by rail, 100 million by bus, and 100 million by taxis and ride-hailing services. These figures highlight the capacity and vitality of China’s urban transport system, Liu said.

    Smart tools like online ticketing and digital payments have made travel more efficient and accessible, Liu said, adding that over 80 hub cities support air-rail intermodal transport.

    BRIDGING GAPS

    Improved transport and logistics are enhancing access across rural and less-developed areas, bringing services, markets and new opportunities within reach.

    As of end-2024, rural roads reached 4.64 million km, and over 30,000 townships and 500,000 administrative villages have been connected by paved roads, Liu said.

    “The last mile of rural roads is now accessible by cars,” the minister said, adding that rural roads are fueling the growth of new industries and tourism, creating local jobs, and raising farmers’ incomes.

    Express delivery services have also played an increasingly important role in narrowing gaps. China has built a three-tier logistics system linking counties, townships and villages, turning rural delivery weak points into engines of consumption and growth, Zhao Chongjiu, head of the State Post Bureau, said at the press conference.

    In 2024, express delivery volumes in central and western China rose by 30 percent and 34 percent, respectively, outpacing the national average, Zhao noted.

    In regions such as Qinghai and Gansu, newly launched mail and courier processing centers have significantly improved handling capacity, enhancing logistics infrastructure in western China, he added.

    GLOBAL LINKS

    China has expanded its global transport network over the past years, boosting connectivity and driving cross-border trade and cooperation.

    The China-Europe freight trains have carried out over 110,000 trips, and nearly 10,000 sea-rail intermodal trains were operated annually along the new western land-sea corridor, Liu said.

    Since its launch over three years ago, the China-Laos Railway has transported 13.9 million tonnes of cargo across more than 3,000 product categories, accelerating the delivery of a wider range of Southeast Asian agricultural products to Chinese consumers.

    China’s global air freight is also on the rise. Driven by booming e-commerce, international air cargo volume reached nearly 9 million tonnes in 2024, up 32.8 percent over 2020.

    China has been pushing for greater connectivity through the alignment of rules and regulations. It has signed over 270 bilateral and multilateral transport agreements covering rail, road, sea, air and postal sectors, according to Liu.

    China has also used international cooperation projects to deliver tangible benefits to local communities. For example, the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has created over 74,000 jobs in Kenya, with a localization rate exceeding 90 percent and more than 2,800 railway professionals trained, Liu said.

    Looking ahead, China will accelerate the building of a strong transportation network through deeper integration, enhanced safety, smart upgrades and green transformation to support the country’s modernization drive, Liu added.

    Liverpool have officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the signing of striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth 79 million pounds (106 million U.S. dollars).

    In a statement released on Monday, the club confirmed: “The Reds and the German outfit have struck a transfer deal said to be worth 69 million pounds plus 10 million pounds in add-ons.”

    Ekitike is expected to travel to Merseyside later this week to undergo a medical and finalize a long-term contract with manager Arne Slot’s team.

    The 23-year-old Frenchman was an unused substitute in Eintracht’s pre-season friendly on Saturday as negotiations regarding his future continued. Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions last season, helping Eintracht secure qualification for the Champions League.
