  • MIL-OSI China: Provinces help facilitate return of migrant workers

    As China resumes full-scale operations after Spring Festival, authorities across the country are rolling out services to stabilize employment, with Guangdong province leading the way by organizing special trains and buses to help migrant workers return to work.
    In January, Guangdong launched employment initiatives that will run through March, aimed at coordinating and providing services during the peak period of job changes before and after the eight-day holiday, which ended on Tuesday.
    Various levels of human resources and social security authorities in the province plan to organize about 20 special high-speed trains to help migrant workers return to their workplaces.
    Guangdong has more than 43 million migrant workers, including over 24 million from other provinces and regions, according to provincial human resources and social security authorities.
    “I am satisfied with my current job and income in Guangdong,” said Tan Jinying, who has worked in the province for nine years.
    A native of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Tan has actively participated in skills training, continuously enhancing her expertise and business capabilities.
    Starting as a front-line operator in 2014, she has grown into a technical specialist responsible for quality control and inspection.
    “The company I work for has accelerated its transformation and upgrading, with automation continuously improving, helping to enhance efficiency and improve the work environment,” she said.
    Tan was among 600 migrant workers from Guangxi who returned to Guangzhou, Guangdong’s capital, on a chartered high-speed train on Monday.
    To accelerate the development of a high-level talent hub, Guangdong aims to strengthen the talent base of its modern industrial system, said Huang Kunming, Party secretary of the province, at a high-quality development conference on Wednesday.
    The province will implement a talent action plan this year, offering competitive salaries and positions to attract 1 million university graduates for employment and entrepreneurship.
    Similar initiatives have been launched in many regions to ensure a smooth return to work and attract more talent. Chartered buses and trains have been heading to various destinations in recent days.
    In Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, a large-scale job fair was held on Wednesday, with more than 300 companies offering over 8,000 job positions. The event also featured livestreamed company presentations, allowing job seekers to learn about corporate culture and work environments in real time.
    Fang Jingtong, a 23-year-old university student in Changsha, Hunan province, expressed her desire to return to her hometown of Taiyuan after graduating in June.
    “Shanxi, known for its rich cultural and tourism resources, offers opportunities for young people like me majoring in visual design,” she said.
    The job fair featured positions in various sectors, including hardware design, marketing planning, operations management and new media, catering to diverse career interests.
    “We hope to recruit more young people skilled in high and new technology,” said Yang Pu, a human resources manager at Foxconn’s Taiyuan Technology Industrial Park.
    The industrial park, one of seven on the Chinese mainland built by Foxconn Technology Group, plans to hire more than 50 engineers, human resources specialists and college graduates.

  • MIL-OSI China: PLA wary of ‘joint patrols’ in South China Sea

    The People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theater Command conducted a routine patrol in the South China Sea on Wednesday, a day after the Philippines and United States militaries conducted a joint exercise in the region.
    Tian Junli, spokesperson for the Southern Theater Command, announced the operation on Wednesday evening, accusing the Philippines of colluding with outside countries to organize “so-called joint patrols”, which Tian claimed destabilize the region.
    The Philippines’ actions, Tian said, were an attempt to endorse its “illegal claims” in the South China Sea and undermine China’s maritime rights and interests. “The theater command forces remain on high alert, resolutely defending national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. Any military activities that disrupt the South China Sea are fully under control,” the spokesperson said.
    On Tuesday, the air forces of the Philippines and the US held “joint patrols” over the South China Sea, according to the Philippines Air Force.
    The same day, the PLA’s Southern Theater Command’s Air Force conducted a routine patrol over Huangyan Island in the South China Sea. Li Jianjian, a spokesperson for the theater command’s Air Force, said the Philippines had worked with outside countries to organize “joint patrols”, further undermining peace and stability in the region.
    On Monday, Tian addressed the passage of a Chinese naval fleet through the Basilan Strait near the Philippines. Tian said the theater command had organized naval and air forces for far-sea exercises via the Basilan Strait. “The relevant operations were conducted in a safe, standardized and professional manner, fully in accordance with international law and international practice,” Tian said.
    Tian criticized the Philippines for “slandering and hyping up” the normal passage of the Chinese naval fleet, adding that such actions violated the normal navigation rights of other countries, including China.

  • MIL-OSI China: China sees over 2.3B inter-regional trips

    During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday that ended on Tuesday, more than 2.3 billion passenger trips were made across all regions in China, official data showed Wednesday.
    The total included 96.26 million railway trips, 2.18 billion road trips, 9.41 million waterway trips, and 18.24 million air trips, according to data from the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., among others.
    The annual Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun in China, is set to break records this year. Between Jan. 14 and Feb. 22, an estimated 9 billion inter-regional passenger trips are expected. The Spring Festival, an occasion for family reunions, fell on Jan. 29 this year.
    In recent years, a notable trend during chunyun has been the surge in the use of new energy vehicles (NEVs), driven by the fast expansion of charging infrastructure and the Chinese people’s growing eco-friendly awareness.
    The State Grid Corporation of China has expected the charging volume for NEVs on the country’s highways to reach a record high during the Spring Festival holiday.

  • MIL-OSI China: China likely to achieve 5% growth this year

    China is expected to maintain its annual economic growth target at around 5 percent for 2025, the same as last year’s goal, in a bid to shore up market expectations in the face of tepid domestic demand and rising trade protectionism, analysts and executives said.

    The world’s second-largest economy has vowed to enhance countercyclical adjustments, including a more proactive fiscal policy and a moderately loose monetary policy, and provide a strong underpinning for achieving its annual goals, they added.

    Though China’s GDP target will only be officially disclosed during the National People’s Congress session in March, the anticipation for the unchanged growth target comes as China’s major economic hubs — like Beijing and Shanghai as well as the provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang — have announced GDP growth goals in the vicinity of 5 percent for the year.

    Aside from Qinghai’s relatively lower target of around 4.5 percent, most other provincial-level regions have also set their growth goals at around 5 percent or slightly above 5 percent.

    Notably, the Xizang autonomous region has set the most ambitious growth objective, targeting over 7 percent with an aim to reach 8 percent. Chongqing, along with the provinces of Hainan and Hubei as well as the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, have set their growth goals at around 6 percent for this year.

    “The country is expected to aim for a GDP expansion of around 5 percent, as China is committed to achieving the goal of doubling per capita GDP by 2035, which requires an implied growth rate of no less than 4.6 percent,” said Zhang Ming, deputy director of the Institute of Finance and Banking, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

    The growth target will also help boost confidence and expectations in the current context of relatively subdued sentiment and provides a framework for policymakers to coordinate resources, Zhang said.

    Moreover, based on data from 2020 to 2024, every 1 percentage point increase in GDP has the potential to create around 2.61 million new urban jobs. A growth rate of around 5 percent could generate over 13 million new jobs, which would significantly alleviate employment pressure, said China Minsheng Bank.

    Through ramping up the intensity of countercyclical adjustments, China can harness its underlying growth potential to meet its 5 percent GDP growth target for 2025, even in the face of potential economic headwinds, said Wen Bin, chief economist at China Minsheng Bank.

    “With external demand likely to face trade barriers tipped by certain economies, China will need to direct its efforts toward unlocking the potential of domestic consumption as the main engine of economic growth,” Wen said.

    China’s consumer goods trade-in programs, which have driven a more than 1 percentage point increase in the annual growth of the country’s total retail sales last year, are set to cover a broader range of consumer goods and offer even more attractive incentives in 2025.

    “China is likely to double the funding for its consumer goods trade-in initiatives this year to 300 billion yuan ($41 billion),” said Wang Qing, chief macroeconomic analyst at Golden Credit Rating International.

    This significant increase in funding is expected to drive a substantial boost in consumption, with Wang forecasting an additional 750 billion yuan in spending in 2025, equivalent to a 1.5 percentage point acceleration in the growth rate of the total retail sales of consumer goods.

    China’s economic growth is poised to outshine the global average this year, underpinned by the dynamism of its innovation-driven private sector and the rapid expansion of future-oriented industries, said Ernesto Torres Cantu, head of international at Citi.

    This dynamism in the private sphere is a key factor behind China’s robust economic performance and the positive sentiment surrounding Chinese companies, he said.

    Meanwhile, such future-oriented industries as artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, green energy and humanoid robots will keep driving the country’s growth forward for years to come, with their impact also being felt worldwide, he added.

  • MIL-OSI China: US federal judge indefinitely blocks Trump’s order ending birthright citizenship

    A federal judge in Maryland on Wednesday indefinitely blocked U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship for undocumented immigrants and foreign visitors with temporary visas.

    Judge Deborah L. Boardman from the United States District Court for the District of Maryland issued a preliminary injunction after a court hearing in Greenbelt, Maryland, in a case filed by civil rights groups seeking to block Trump’s order. The injunction applies nationally.

    “The Maryland lawsuit is one of at least six different federal cases brought against Trump’s order by a total of 22 Democratic-led states and more than half a dozen civil rights groups,” according to The Washington Post.

    Trump signed the order hours after taking office on Jan. 20. It directed federal agencies to halt recognition of citizenship for children born after Feb. 19, if neither parent is a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident.

    Over 20 states and civil rights groups immediately filed lawsuits challenging the order, calling it blatantly “unconstitutional.”

    On Jan. 23, Senior U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, a federal judge in Seattle, Washington state, temporarily blocked Trump’s executive order for at least 14 days, as lawsuits in Washington state and elsewhere over Trump’s action proceeded.

    The 14th Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

    Trump’s executive order argued that the 14th Amendment “has always” excluded from birthright citizenship persons who were born in the United States but not “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”

  • MIL-OSI China: US proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza condemned in Mideast

    Middle East governments and regional leaders on Wednesday roundly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Washington could assume control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians, calling the proposal a breach of international law and a threat to longstanding efforts toward a two-state solution.

    Trump floated the idea during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, stating that the U.S. would “take over the Gaza Strip” and redevelop it, though he offered no specifics on resettling Palestinians.

    “We’re going to develop it, create thousands of jobs, and it’ll be something the entire Middle East can be proud of,” he said.

    In a statement, the Arab League (AL) rejected Trump’s proposal, saying it violates international law and threatens regional stability. The AL reaffirmed that the Palestinian issue remains subject to Arab consensus, emphasizing that one of its key principles is ensuring the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to establish an independent state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

    Trump’s proposal “does not contribute to achieving the two-state solution, which represents the only way to bring peace and security between Palestinians and Israelis, and in the entire region,” the pan-Arab body said.

    Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called the Gaza proposal “unacceptable” and fundamentally flawed. “Even considering such a plan is wrong,” Fidan told the semi-official Anadolu Agency in an interview. “We oppose all initiatives that seek to exclude the people of Gaza from the equation in the region. The idea of displacement is neither acceptable for the region nor for us.”

    Fidan also emphasized Turkey’s firm stance on Palestinian rights, rejecting any efforts to remove Hamas from Gaza’s reconstruction and governance.

    The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement Wednesday, reaffirming that Saudi Arabia’s position on the establishment of a Palestinian state is non-negotiable. “The country will continue its relentless efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without that,” the statement read.

    “Achieving lasting and just peace is impossible without the Palestinian people obtaining their legitimate rights in accordance with international resolutions, as has been previously clarified to both the former and current U.S. administrations,” it added.

    In a meeting in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and visiting Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa urged the continuation of efforts to recover Gaza without forcing Palestinians to leave the enclave, especially as they remain determined to stay. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Palestinian rights, stressing the need for a fair, permanent political solution based on the two-state framework to end cycles of violence.

    Jordan’s King Abdullah II, in a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman, also rejected any attempts to annex land or displace Palestinians. “We reaffirm the necessity of achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, which will lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders,” the statement from Jordan’s Royal Hashemite Court said. The king also reiterated Jordan’s support for the Palestinian people in securing their legitimate rights.

    The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced Wednesday its strong rejection of the idea of forcibly relocating Palestinians. The UAE Foreign Ministry said in a statement that any efforts to displace Palestinians are unacceptable and violate their fundamental rights. The UAE reiterated its support for a two-state solution, emphasizing that the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state is essential for achieving long-term peace and stability in the region.

    Meanwhile, Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary general of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the organization “categorically rejects all calls to displace our people from their homeland.” He stated that the two-state solution, based on international law, remains the only viable path to peace and stability. “We were born here, we have lived here, and we will remain here.”

    Strongly condemning and rejecting Trump’s remarks, Hamas said in a press statement that such rhetoric would escalate tensions in the region and aims to forcibly remove the Palestinian people from their land while justifying U.S. and Israeli control over Gaza. Hamas vowed that neither it nor the Palestinian people would allow any foreign power to impose guardianship over Gaza.

    Russia and Ukraine have swapped 300 prisoners of war in their latest swap mediated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Russian defense ministry said Wednesday.

    The released Russian soldiers are receiving medical care in Belarus and will soon return to Russia, according to the ministry.

    Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 150 Ukrainians had returned home from Russia as part of the swap.

    Zelensky thanked the UAE for its mediation.

    It is vital to stay true to the bedrock of international law and “avoid any form of ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Wednesday.

    At its essence, the exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people is about the right of Palestinians to simply live as human beings in their own land, Guterres told a UN committee meeting.

    “We have seen the realization of those rights steadily slip farther out of reach. We have seen a chilling, systematic dehumanization and demonization of an entire people,” he said in remarks at the 2025 session of the committee on the exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

    “In the search for solutions, we must not make the problem worse,” Guterres warned. “It is vital to stay true to the bedrock of international law. It is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing.”

    Guterres’ speech came one day after U.S. President Donald Trump proposed that Palestinians will resettle elsewhere and the United States will take over and gain “long-term ownership position” in the war-torn enclave. But the UN chief didn’t mention Trump or his proposal during his address.

    During the meeting, Guterres also called for a full ceasefire in Gaza following the first phase of a truce deal between Israel and Hamas.

    “First, we must keep pushing for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all hostages without delay,” he said. “We cannot go back to more death and destruction.”

    Highlighting the importance of the two-state solution, the UN chief said, “A viable, sovereign Palestinian State living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel is the only sustainable solution for Middle East stability.”

    Guterres also voiced his concern over the escalating situation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. “I am gravely concerned by rising violence by Israeli settlers and other violations,” he said.

    The UN chief stressed the violence must stop, and international law must be respected, and accountability ensured.

    Reiterating the UN’s full commitment to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, Guterres called on the international community to work toward preserving the unity, contiguity, and integrity of the occupied Palestinian territory and the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza.

    Trump floated his plan during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, suggesting that the United States could take control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians, which has sparked widespread defiance and condemnation.

    At Wednesday’s noon briefing, when asked if Guterres believes Trump’s plan amounted to ethnic cleansing, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, responded, “Any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing.”

    The American pop/rock band OneRepublic performed their chart-topping song Counting Stars at Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Hubei province, during the 2025 Chinese Spring Festival Gala.

    Wuhan served as one of the sub-venues for the Gala. The city made a spectacular appearance during the show with a mesmerizing phoenix dance performance.

    Afterward, the Yellow Crane Tower reappeared with OneRepublic standing center stage. Their performance won praise, with comments highlighting the blend of Eastern and Western cultures and the spectacular view of the venue.

    OneRepublic held a live concert at the Wuhan Sports Center on Jan 16. Two days before the event, they posted a video on the Chinese social media platform Weibo of them enjoying the famous local Wuhan hot dry noodles. After the show, the band expressed gratitude for the beauty and wonderful experience in the city.

  • MIL-OSI China: Shanghai Library East features snake-themed art exhibition

    An ongoing exhibition at Shanghai Library East is celebrating the Year of the Snake with a display of 270 snake-themed artworks. The exhibition, which is taking place through March 2, explores snake-related myths, legends, history and modern interpretations.

    Co-hosted by Shanghai Library, Shanghai Artists’ Association and Shanghai Animation and Cartoon Association, this marks the third consecutive year of Chinese zodiac-themed exhibitions at the library.

    As one of the 12 animals in the traditional Chinese zodiac, the snake is widely represented in Chinese culture, symbolizing intelligence, rejuvenation and agility. The exhibition features a diverse array of works, including paintings, cartoons, illustrations, engravings and digital art, created by established artists like Dai Dunbang and Zheng Xinyao, star artists on social media, and art students. The exhibits were selected from more than 6,000 submissions from home and abroad.

    Additionally, the library has also introduced snake-themed furnishings and decorations, along with a new interactive game that brings some of the featured artworks to life.

  • MIL-OSI China: Highly anticipated series highlights themes of sisterhood

    Six Sisters, a highly anticipated TV series, topped the country’s daily ratings on Wednesday, according to industry tracker Beacon.

    The drama, adapted from writer Yi Bei’s 2018 novel of the same name, follows the story of the He family, focusing on He Changsheng and his wife Liu Meixin as they navigate the challenges of raising six daughters.

    After the father dies in a car crash, He Jiali, the oldest daughter, shoulders the burden of raising the large family with her mother and grandmother by taking care of her five younger sisters, helping them to establish their own families and secure jobs.

    Starring actress Mei Ting as the oldest daughter and actor Lu Yi as her husband, the drama debuted on China Central Television’s CCTV-1 and simultaneously streamed on Tencent Video on Feb 3.

    The series, which also stars actresses Vivian Wu and Xi Meijuan as the mother and grandmother, was filmed in Huainan in East China’s Anhui province, capturing some time-honored locations, including Huaishang Dock, Beitou Food Market Street and Huainan Normal University.

    Set in the city, the drama incorporates many local elements ranging from customs to food. For example, satang, a type of rice porridge made with broth, appears in multiple scenes as the mother’s favorite dish.

    Yang Xiaopei, the chief producer and art director of the drama, said that each character has their own story and these tales intertwine to become an indispensable source of strength in each other’s lives. She hopes the project conveys a sense of warmth and strength to audiences.

    Yi, who also serves as the scriptwriter, shared that he employed a comedic narrative style, hoping that the story reflects the societal changes over four decades through the perspectives of ordinary people living in a small city.

    “The stories of the six sisters revolve around universal themes such as birth, aging, illness, death, love, and marriage. However, when placed against a specific backdrop, they take on a unique theme,” Yi added.

    China will beef up law enforcement cooperation with relevant countries to crack down on online gambling and telecom fraud, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

    On the recent string of cross-border telecom fraud and other vicious cases along the Thailand-Myanmar border, China attaches great importance to it and made persistent effort to ask relevant countries to jointly find solutions through consultation, Lin made the remarks at a regular news briefing in response to a related query.

    “China welcomes the robust measures by relevant country. We stand ready to work with Thailand and other countries to beef up law enforcement cooperation, crack down on online gambling and telecom fraud, protect the safety of Chinese citizens overseas and their lawful rights and interests, and keep normal cross-border exchanges between China and relevant countries in order,” said the spokesperson.

    China has all along believed that “the Palestinians governing Palestine” is the fundamental principle of post-conflict governance of Gaza, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

    The spokesperson made the remarks at a daily press briefing when asked to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech in which he said the U.S. will “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip after resettling Palestinians living there to neighboring countries, like Jordan and Egypt.

    Lin noted that China has all along believed that “the Palestinians governing Palestine” is the fundamental principle of post-conflict governance of Gaza.

    “We oppose the forced displacement of the people in Gaza, and hope that relevant parties will take the opportunity of the ceasefire and post-conflict governance in Gaza to bring the Palestinian question back to the right track of a political settlement based on the two-State solution, so as to realize lasting peace in the Middle East,” Lin said.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Finance Committee, voted against advancing Howard Lutnick, President Trump’s nominee to be Secretary of the Department of Commerce, to the full Senate for consideration.

    In a committee markup today, Sen. Cantwell expressed her concerns with Lutnick’s support for President Trump’s proposed tariffs. She also pointed to Lutnick’s failure to commit to fully allocating the funds approved by Congress under the Cantwell-led CHIPS & Science Act, as well as his waffling on whether he’d protect NOAA – including NOAA’s crucial missions and functions, and the workforce delivering those services to the American people.

    ON TRADE & TARIFFS

    “Tariffs and trade wars are a major problem for my state, where two out of every five jobs are tied to trade-related industries,” Sen. Cantwell said in today’s committee meeting. “The Commerce [nominee] has said he’s advocating for the president’s policy [that] would cost my constituents $5 billion or more. We need a secretary that understands that these products and these issues need coalition building, not throwing down gauntlets that will lose jobs for my farmers.”

    Yesterday, Sen. Cantwell delivered a speech on the Senate floor calling for the United States to repudiate the trade philosophy of Trump — whose proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and 10% tariff on goods from China would spark a trade war, drive up costs for American consumers, harm domestic businesses across hundreds of industries, and compromise the United States’ global leadership in the free trade ecosystem.     In Washington state, two out of every five jobs are tied to trade and related industries. In 2023, the state imported $19.9 billion of goods from Canada – primarily oil, gas, lumber, and electrical power — making our northern neighbors Washington state’s largest trade partner.     ON CHIPS & SCIENCE FUNDING

    “Over the last four years, there has been much investment in infrastructure [for] manufacturing that this committee has supported. Semiconductor expansion — $450 billion right here in the United States, thanks to the CHIPS & Science Act — and Mr. Lutnick, in various answers to various members of the committee, did not give a full commitment to making sure this money continues to go out the door,” Sen. Cantwell said in today’s committee meeting.

    Sen. Cantwell was the main architect and key negotiator of the CHIPS & Science Act. In her position as Commerce chair, she was instrumental in securing the science R&D funding authorizations in the 11th hour of negotiations. A key component of the legislation is the Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs) program that was authored by Sen. Cantwell to strengthen U.S. economic and national security with investments in regions across the country. Earlier this month, the American Aerospace Materials Manufacturing Center (AAMMC) in Spokane was awarded $48 million from the program to establish the first-of-its-kind testbed facility in the United States focused on developing advanced thermoplastic materials – new types of lightweight, heat-moldable, and recyclable materials that can replace metal in aircraft parts. The AAMMC will serve as the nation’s hub for creating and testing these innovative materials that are essential for more rapidly building fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft. 

    ON DISMANTLING NOAA

    “[NOAA] makes up more than 60% of the Commerce budget. When asked for the record if NOAA should be dismantled, as called for in [Project 2025], Mr. Lutnick would only say, if confirmed, he would figure it out. Given how central NOAA is for providing accurate weather forecasting, managing our fisheries, protecting our fishermen from Russian and Chinese illegal fishing, I was looking for a stronger commitment,” Sen. Cantwell said today.

    Project 2025 calls for NOAA to be “dismantled and many of its functions eliminated,” calling it part of the “climate change alarm industry.” NOAA provides critical services to the Nation including weather forecasts, extreme storm tracking and monitoring, tools to enable communities to adapt to sea level rise and climate change, supporting fisheries management, and conserving marine mammals and other protected species.

    Sen. Cantwell is a champion of NOAA and helped secure $3.3 billion in NOAA investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to help communities prepare for and adapt to climate change, boost science needed to understand changing weather and climate patterns, and invest in advanced computer technologies that are critical for extreme weather prediction and emergency response. Her Fire Ready Nation Act, bipartisan legislation to strengthen NOAA’s ability to help forecast, prevent, and fight wildfires, passed the Commerce committee unanimously today and now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

    Washington (February 5, 2025) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Senate co-chair of the bicameral Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, today introduced a resolution to recommit the United States to arms control agreements to prevent a new nuclear arms race, one year before the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between the United States and Russia will expire. Unless a new agreement is in place by early 2026, there will be no legal limits on U.S. and Russian strategic nuclear forces, reversing decades of work to reduce the risk of nuclear war. Representatives Bill Foster (IL-11), John Garamendi (CA-08), and Don Beyer (VA-08) are leading the resolution in the House. Reps. Garamendi and Beyer are the House co-chairs of the Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group.

    “The Trump administration has an historic opportunity to initiate high-level talks for a new pact and prevent a dangerous and costly nuclear arms race,” said Senator Markey. “I urge President Trump to work with Russia to replace New START and to talk with China about arms control. We are just one year away from losing New START and with it, all legal limits on Russian nuclear forces. There is no time to wait.”

    “As a physicist, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons has always been one of my top priorities,” said Representative Foster. “Russia’s suspension of the New START Treaty and Putin’s rhetoric about the potential use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine should have the entire international community on high alert and should serve as the impetus for us to pursue substantive nuclear arms control dialogue.     On May 17, 2024, the Working Group co-chairs led their colleagues in a letter to President Joe Biden urging support for commonsense limits on the world’s two largest nuclear stockpiles, and to continue renewed efforts to restart arms control talks with the Russian Federation and other nuclear states.

  • MIL-OSI China: Scientists advance development of High-energy Underwater Neutrino Telescope

    Chinese scientists have successfully launched a detector prototype for the High-energy Underwater Neutrino Telescope (HUNT) into the South China Sea, the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced Wednesday.
    The institute said the scientific research ship Tansuo-3 and the manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi (Deep Sea Warrior) helped precisely deploy the detectors at a predetermined location 1,600 meters below sea level.
    According to the IHEP, the detectors were also successfully connected to China’s undersea scientific observation network, a major national scientific and technological infrastructure.
    Neutrinos are highly penetrating particles that carry primordial information. Thus, they are an effective tool for studying the origins of high-energy cosmic rays and the evolution of celestial bodies.
    Chinese scientists have proposed the next-generation HUNT as a large-scale scientific device expected to lead the development of neutrino astronomy. The South China Sea is the only viable site for the telescope in China, which will cover approximately 600 square kilometers of sea area.
    A team of researchers from the IHEP, Ocean University of China, the Institute of Acoustics of the CAS, and other institutions are carrying out the project.

    A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday expressed profound sorrow on the passing of Koo Yen Cho-yun, wife of Koo Chen-fu, the late former chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, and extended heartfelt condolences to her family.
    The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) has sent a condolence message to Koo’s family, said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, responding to a media query.
    Koo dedicated herself to promoting Chinese culture, engaged in cross-Strait exchange and cooperation in various fields, and accompanied her husband to meetings with Wang Daohan, then head of ARATS, making positive contributions to the improvement and development of cross-Strait relations, Zhu said.
    Koo upheld the 1992 Consensus and actively promoted cross-Strait exchange, Zhu said.

  • MIL-OSI China: Chinese scientist awarded for excellence in clinical stroke

    Chinese clinical scientist Wang Yongjun has been granted the William M. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke at the 2025 International Stroke Conference (ISC) held in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
    The Feinberg Award, founded by the American Stroke Association, is named after the late William M. Feinberg, a prominent stroke clinician and researcher who contributed to a more comprehensive understanding to the causes of stroke.
    Wang, president of the Beijing Tiantan Hospital of the Capital Medical University, and president of the Chinese Stroke Association, is the first Asian scientist to receive this award, in recognition of his significant contributions to the investigation and management of clinical research in stroke.
    Addressing the conference, Wang said that over the past 30 years, his team of clinical scientists has produced 12 key pieces of evidence that have changed clinical guidelines and clinical practice. It has brought intravenous thrombolysis into the era of multiple agent options and opportunities of thrombolysis at late time windows.
    “It is very fortunate that our team has been a major force in providing evidence of intravenous thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke,” he said.
    “The story continues and our mission is not fully accomplished. Several clinical trials are still ongoing, including thrombolysis with Tenecteplase for minor ischemic strokes, basilar artery occlusion, and thrombolysis for ischemic stroke at very late time windows. We’re looking forward to the results of TRACE-4, TRACE-5 and TRACE-Beyond,” Wang said.
    “Professor Wang has been an inspiration not just to Asia, but to the entire stroke world for the seminal work that he has done both on the prevention side with stroke and with acute stroke. His trials have influenced practice the world over, and have been an inspiration for many of us stroke trialists on how to do large clinical trials,” Bijou Menon, professor of neurology at the University of Calgary, and ISC vice-chair, told Xinhua.
    Tudor G. Jovin, professor of neurology and neurological surgery at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, said that Dr. Wang’s exemplary career has had a profound impact on the field of vascular neurology, highlighted through his groundbreaking research, his accomplishments in organization of stroke care, and his commitment to teaching.
    “His highly impactful work has not been confined to only one area of stroke care but spans various domains including acute care, (intravenous and endovascular reperfusion) imaging, stroke prevention and organization of stroke care,” Jovin said.
    ISC is the world’s premier conference dedicated to the science of stroke and brain health. Eleven scientists were individually recognized for their exceptional achievements and contributions toward stroke care and research.
    The three-day conference, running from Wednesday to Friday, features a wide range of topics that cover the latest advances in stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, offering an opportunity to stay updated on cutting-edge research and advancements in the field of stroke for professionals around the world.
    About 4,000 professionals from worldwide participated in the annual conference.

    China has all along believed that “the Palestinians governing Palestine” is the fundamental principle of post-conflict governance of Gaza, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

    The spokesperson made the remarks at a daily press briefing when asked to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech in which he said the U.S. will “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip after resettling Palestinians living there to neighboring countries, like Jordan and Egypt.

    Lin noted that China has all along believed that “the Palestinians governing Palestine” is the fundamental principle of post-conflict governance of Gaza.

    “We oppose the forced displacement of the people in Gaza, and hope that relevant parties will take the opportunity of the ceasefire and post-conflict governance in Gaza to bring the Palestinian question back to the right track of a political settlement based on the two-State solution, so as to realize lasting peace in the Middle East,” Lin said.

  • MIL-OSI China: Pressure is not the right way for the US to deal with China: FM

    Applying pressure is not the right way for the United States to handle its relations with China, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday, referring to the additional 10 percent tariff the U.S. has placed on goods from China under the pretext of fentanyl-related issues.

    “Disregarding the outcomes of China-U.S. cooperation on drug control, the U.S. has insisted on imposing this tariff on Chinese imports. China has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to the move, and has taken necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” Lin told a regular news briefing.

    Shifting the blame to other countries will not resolve the fentanyl crisis in the United States, and there are no winners in trade or tariff wars, Lin said.

    He said that applying pressure and issuing threats is not the right way for the United States to handle its relations with China, noting that the basic solution for the U.S. is reducing its domestic drug demand and strengthening its law enforcement cooperation.

    Lin said that on Jan. 17, China’s head of state held a telephone conversation with then U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at the request of the latter, reaching a principled consensus on undertaking mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

    “What is needed now is not unilateral tariffs, but dialogue and consultation — on equal footing and with mutual respect,” Lin said.

    China has some of the strictest drug control policies and highest levels of enforcement globally, Lin said.

    In 2019, China became the first country in the world to officially schedule fentanyl-related substances as a distinct class, which it did on humanitarian grounds and at the request of the United States, he said.

    In recent years, China and the United States have made clear progress in practical cooperation on drug control in such areas as substance regulation, intelligence exchange and case cooperation, producing tangible benefits, according to the spokesperson.

    China’s top legislator Zhao Leji held talks with Woo Won-shik, National Assembly Speaker of the Republic of Korea (ROK), in Beijing on Wednesday.

    Zhao, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said China and the ROK are close in geography and culture, and enjoy convenient conditions for exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

    Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China-ROK relations have developed rapidly and achieved fruitful results, which has brought benefits to both sides and their peoples and also promoted regional stability and development, he said.

    China is willing to work with the ROK to strengthen high-level exchanges and strategic communication, make good use of the dialogue and communication mechanisms between government and political parties of the two countries, and enhance mutual understanding and trust, Zhao added.

    The annual Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF) wrapped up on Wednesday, witnessing a notable surge in interest in translated Chinese books as readers from across the Arab world sought deeper insights into China’s culture, history, and modernization.

    One of the main attractions of the fair was the Bayt Al-Hekma Cultural Group, a publishing house primarily dedicated to translating Chinese books into Arabic and providing Chinese language learning resources. Over the years, it has built a strong reputation among Arab readers, becoming a key destination for those eager to explore China’s development and cultural heritage.

    Saudi visitor Hussein Ismail was among the visitors who purchased several books from the booth. He explained that his deep interest in China’s modernization and economic success motivated him to explore Chinese literature.

    “Saudi Arabia is experiencing greater openness to China economically and politically, which has sparked increased cultural exchanges and translation efforts,” Ismail told Xinhua.

    He also emphasized a shift in reading preferences among Arab readers, who have traditionally been more exposed to Western literature and history.

    “Now, there is a greater need to explore other civilizations, with China being at the forefront,” he said.

    Egyptian translator Essam Ahmed, who began studying Chinese in 2016, shared a similar perspective.

    “When I first started learning the language, there weren’t many available resources,” he told Xinhua, adding that Bayt Al-Hekma was his primary source for books on Chinese history, culture, and language.

    Ahmed highlighted the increasing diversity of Chinese books at this year’s fair, covering topics such as literature, economics, politics, and history.

    “Bayt Al-Hekma plays a crucial role in introducing Arab readers to China’s rich civilization, as it remains the only specialized exhibitor of translated Chinese books at the fair,” he said.

    According to Amr Moghith, director of Bayt Al-Hekma, this year’s booth featured an extensive selection of translated Chinese books in political, economic, and cultural fields, as well as books written about China by Arab scholars and researchers.

    The newly translated works cover topics such as China’s energy resources, its role in the global economy, cultural identity, and China’s engagement with Africa through travel literature, he noted.

    “Apart from translations, we also focus on original books written in Arabic about China, offering deeper insights for researchers and academics,” Moghith told Xinhua.

    The publisher has also expanded into children’s literature, with more than 120 books translated from Chinese into Arabic for young readers aged 9 to 16. This year, several new titles have been introduced, offering engaging stories that blend adventure and problem-solving, appealing to young audiences.

    Beyond books, Bayt Al-Hekma’s booth featured cultural products from China, including traditional Chinese New Year items.

    “These cultural industries have become an essential part of Arab-Chinese cultural exchange, drawing significant interest from visitors,” Moghith pointed out.

    This year’s edition of CIBF, held under the theme “Read… In the Beginning Was the Word,” ran from Jan. 23 to Feb. 5. The event hosted 1,345 publishers and 6,150 exhibitors from 80 countries, including 10 countries participating for the first time.

  • MIL-OSI China: China sees surging culture, tourism market during 2025 Spring Festival holiday

    China witnessed a remarkable surge in its culture and tourism market during the eight-day Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Tuesday, with several market segments climbing to all-time highs.

    The Spring Festival, traditionally a peak and lucrative period for cinemas, saw record box office revenue and audience turnout highs this year, according to the China Film Administration on Wednesday.

    Based on the statistics up to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, box office revenues totaled a staggering 10 billion yuan (approximately 1.39 billion U.S. dollars) between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, according to ticketing app Beacon.

    The holiday also saw a significant rise in numbers of moviegoers, with 187 million people packing out theaters in China, the film administration announced.

    Animated feature “Ne Zha 2” has emerged as the undisputed holiday leader, raking in over 5.05 billion yuan as of Wednesday, according to data from Beacon, making it the top-grossing domestic animated feature of all time.

    As ticket sales continue to climb, the sequel could reach a total box office revenue of 6 billion yuan, which would be a record for Chinese film, Beacon projects.

    As China’s most important festival, the Spring Festival features a rich array of traditions and celebrations that mark the end of an old year and the joyful arrival of a new one. In recent years, it has also become a key driver for the tourism sector — both domestically and internationally.

    Fueled by the Spring Festival’s inclusion on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in December 2024, this year’s holiday saw a booming tourism market.

    According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Wednesday, China saw a record 501 million domestic tourist trips during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, up 5.9 percent year on year. Tourist spending reached a record high of over 677 billion yuan during the period, a 7 percent year-on-year increase.

    More than 2.3 billion passenger trips were made across all regions in China during the holiday, including 96.26 million railway trips, 2.18 billion road trips, 9.41 million waterway trips and 18.24 million air trips, official data showed on Wednesday.

    China recorded 14.37 million cross-border trips during the Spring Festival holiday, a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year and including 958,000 trips made by foreigners, according to statistics released by the National Immigration Administration on Wednesday.

Senator Murray delivered an hour-long floor speech and her remarks below touch specifically on how the Trump Administration is still blocking hundreds of billions of dollars of approved funding under Trump’s executive orders, and what sort of pain this illegal funding freeze could mean for Washington state and the country:
    On infrastructure:
    “All of these projects, and many more have been thrown into complete uncertainty because of President Trump’s Executive Orders. It is just completely unclear when, or if these projects are going to get the funds they are counting on and owed—from the bills Congress passed.
    “And that is not just causing chaos, it is not just causing delays, it is causing harm and alarm—because it could mean construction grinds to a halt, and workers lose jobs. It could mean the work will go un-started—or perhaps in some cases—unfinished.
    “Plus, it will mean increasing costs for cities, counties, states, and Tribes for those projects that somehow make it through this. And while there are many more infrastructure projects in my state I still haven’t even touched on, not to mention the other projects across the country. There are so many other projects, organizations, and people who are being harmed right now by President Trump’s reckless funding freeze. “

    “When people are starving, you cannot just feed them money—you need to have already made the investments to grow food. When democracies are in crisis, you can’t just cut them a check—you need to have helped them build strong institutions. When a deadly disease outbreak strikes—you are going to learn very quickly that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

People who work incredibly hard—and who are incredibly proud of the work they do to make the world a better place and reaffirm U.S. global leadership…

But because President Trump and Elon Musk are listening to whacko conspiracists and ultra-isolationists—while ignoring the experts, ignoring the obvious realities, and again ignoring the law.     “And let me make one thing perfectly clear—even before this latest whirl of chaos, President Trump was already illegally blocking billions of dollars. And even after the OMB guidance was reversed, he is still holding back all of those funds through his illegal executive orders.
    “You don’t have to take it from me. You can take it directly from the White House Press Secretary, quote: ‘This is not a rescission of the federal funding freeze… The President’s [Executive Orders] on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented’
    “So, now that was the chaos of last week, I want to talk about the chaos that remains—what we are still seeing this week, and what it means for folks back home, and across the country. Because there is still significant confusion, and the remaining freezes are still causing significant pain.
    “For example, I’ve heard from cities in my state, and from the Washington State Department of Transportation. Now, it is still hard to get a clear picture, given the chaotic roll out, roll back, and more. But they are telling me they are concerned about infrastructure projects all over my state that are already getting delayed now—and could get derailed entirely because President Trump is still illegally blocking funding we passed with his executive orders.
    “If this illegal freeze continues, people will lose jobs and communities will lose out on projects that have been in the works for years.
    “Trump is blocking money to repair electric chargers, to install heavy duty chargers for trucks, to make critical repairs to bridges in order to protect the safety of millions of drivers, and to install new chargers along major roads in my state like I-90, US-97, US-2, US-195, and US-395. Stopping these projects is just pointlessly hurting commuters and businesses, it is costing construction workers, it is killing jobs.
    “Trump is holding up road projects that make streets safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers, like a safer streets project in Richland, Washington, and critical safety barriers in Spokane—not to mention the Liberty Park Land Bridge in Spokane, which would reconnect communities, and provide more green space for families to enjoy.
    “Or funds for the city of Lakewood’s plans to revitalize its downtown and bring in more retail space, and restaurants, and health care services, and financial services, make upgrades to roads, and provide a new festival area, park areas, and more.
    “Trump’s freeze is also a concern for the Samish Indian Nation as it works to improve safety and access to their land at the Campbell Lake Road intersection—which has seen growing traffic in recent years—and for a project led by the Tulalip Tribe to improve the interchanges along I-5 exits. The congestion on these ramps can get so bad it backs up to the main highway!
    “We want to get these projects done, we want to get them done—and the last thing we need is uncertainty about these stalled funds.
    “There’s also a project underway to upgrade the technology at our border with Canada—replacing and improving the outdated wait time system to improve accuracy and help our inspection and transportation agencies. This will help travelers headed to Canada avoid long wait times at the border and help fans from around the world, by the way, who are travelling between Seattle and Vancouver for next year’s World Cup move quickly—but not if Trump’s executive orders stop all of this funding!
    “Same for the efforts to update our state-wide planning with a new electronic system that would make the process for planning, and specifications, and estimates more efficient.
    “And, of course, in Washington state—we can never forget about fish, which are crucial to our culture, and our economy, in many ways. Trump’s ongoing funding freeze is putting projects to improve fish habitats on ice—replacing the culvert at Thornton Creek, replacing the failing culvert at Wapato Creek, which is right underneath the Pierce County Terminal at the Port of Tacoma, or removing the fish barrier culverts at Johnson Creek which will open up nearly 3,000 meters of upstream habitat.
    “Not to mention other wildlife preservation work, like an undercrossing structure and wildlife barriers east of Winthrop. And work on our waterways. Funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is still not restored today for some projects on the Lower Columbia River, projects like stormwater infrastructure that will help keep toxins out of water and restore wetlands and protect the ecosystems.
    “Our ports, our ports—so critical for not only Washington state’s economy, but for the whole country—are caught up in this too. There are port projects now on hold across my state, including for electrical infrastructure and shore power for vessels. These impacts are being felt from Anacortes to Port Angeles to Vancouver. Frozen funding is hurting working families in Washington and across the country, and it is making our economy less competitive.
    “And, we cannot forget our ferries—which are so crucial to many commuters in my state. Washington state ferries are looking to improve their data with a better system for collecting, analyzing, and reporting wait times at all of our terminals. This would give them useful information to improve efficiency and make life better for the people they serve. Losing that funding means more people will miss ferries and long waits in line for Washington state commuters crossing the water to work, to school, to medical appointments.
    “We also have absolutely essential electric transmission and distribution projects that are on hold now and in jeopardy. These are projects that are necessary, helping reduce our wildfire risks, ensure grid reliability, improve resilience to natural disasters, and lower costs for ratepayers across my state of Washington.
    “And these are funded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—that is a law that Republicans and Democrats worked together to pass–it’s a program that Republicans thought was important enough to provide $10.5 billion. After what we have seen in recent months and years, I don’t know how you can say with a straight face that modernizing our grid isn’t absolutely vital to the future of our country. You don’t have to listen to me—Secretary Burgum and Secretary Wright said as much in their confirmation hearings.
    “But this project—all of these projects, and many more have been thrown into complete uncertainty because of President Trump’s Executive Orders. It is completely unclear when, or if these projects are going to get the funds they were counting on and they were owed—from bills Congress passed and were signed into law.
    “And that is not just causing chaos, it is not just causing delays, it is causing harm and alarm—because it could mean construction grinds to a halt, and workers lose jobs. It means the work will go un-started—or perhaps in some cases—unfinished.
    “Plus, it will mean increasing costs for cities, counties, states, and Tribes for those projects that somehow make it through all of this.     “I know there are medical researchers, still worried their work will be considered ‘woke’ when in reality, it is actually pretty darn important we understand the roots of health disparities—things like why the maternal death rate is so much higher for Black or Native American women.
    “Yet, researchers are being told that their research is at risk of being defunded if they are examining issues of ‘equity,’ or ‘barriers to care,’ or even if they are specifically studying ‘females.’
    “And, there are hospitals in my state, and across the country, worried that some of these programs—which are appropriately focused on someone’s gender or race—are in jeopardy.
    “For example, we know pulse oximeters are less accurate for people with darker skin tones—making sure these clinical measurements are accurate will save lives, and can have life and death consequences for patients. And we know women have much higher rates of autoimmune disorders than men—we need to take a look at why that is.
    “We also need to invest in training the next generation of scientists, including from diverse backgrounds. Studies show that diversity in the scientific workforce leads to greater innovation and productivity. But there is a serious concern that lifesaving work is going to get caught up in President Trump’s sweeping illegal executive orders.
    “Another impact of Trump’s actions? The National Park Service has rescinded all of its employment offers for summer seasonal staff. Now that doesn’t just mean people will be facing longer wait lines and dirtier bathrooms—though they will. It could mean park closures throughout this entire summer, and it will mean delayed responses to emergencies—making people less safe.
    “And outside our national parks, Trump is also freezing regional clean up efforts. Things like stopping illegal dumping and improving air quality in our communities.
    “And M. President, let’s talk about foreign assistance, because, for decades now—there has been widespread, bipartisan understanding that promoting stability abroad, promoting democracy, improving health, strengthening trade, and building partnerships is crucial to US leadership.
    “But Trump’s executive orders put all of that at risk by illegally freezing funds. I have heard from organizations that operate all over the world about how they were unable to deliver the life-saving aid that millions of people rely on due to these stop-work orders. That meant millions of doses of lifesaving drugs sat un-used on shelves. Time-sensitive prevention methods against diseases like malaria were not carried out, putting millions at risk. Training for more than 64,000 health care workers were put on hold. Hundreds of millions of metric tons of U.S.-grown commodities sitting—and at the risk of spoiling—in transport, instead of reaching their final destinations across the world to feed people in need.
    “And despite a so-called ‘waiver’ from the U.S. State Department to resume work, much of this life-saving aid is still today on hold. Without a start-work order, those organizations fear they are taking on significant risk in continuing operations. Put simply: this was already unacceptable.
    “And now, over the weekend—President Trump and Elon Musk have decided against all reason, against all evidence, and against the law, mind you, to completely dismantle USAID. And that is on top of the illegal funding freeze that has already been pushing U.S. businesses, nonprofits, and international aid groups to make tough choices, for truly pointless reasons.
    “It should be obvious that these cuts will hurt people across the world. These cuts will mean people starve. These cuts will mean people don’t get clean water. These cuts will mean more disease outbreaks with higher death counts. These cuts will mean less help for victims of violence, and higher death rates for pregnant women.
    “And anyone with an ounce of humanity can see this freeze will get devastating, fast. And—it is important to note—it will get devastating in ways you cannot just make up for with more money later once the damage is done. That is just not how it works.
    “When people are starving, you cannot just feed them money—you need to have already made the investments to grow food.
    “When democracies are in crisis, you can’t just cut them a check—you need to have helped them build strong institutions.
    “When a deadly disease outbreak strikes—you are going to learn very quickly that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

    “Because that is exactly what we are doing if we let Trump get away with illegally cutting off global aid—with the stroke of a pen—and letting the richest man in the world cut off help for some of the poorest people in the world.
    “And let’s be clear—it is not just U.S. leadership on the line here. There are U.S. jobs at stake here. That reality is hitting home hard this week.     As Senator Murray delivered an hour-long floor speech on the Senate floor, she also specifically discussed how Elon Musk, like Vought, is working to illegal block funds and cut programs families rely on—including by gaining alarming access to sensitive financial systems:

    “This is not Silicon Valley—where you can just ‘move fast and break things.’ When you break things here—people don’t get health care, people don’t get Social Security checks, people don’t get crucial warnings and lifesaving information.

    “And anyone who thinks—’well, that surely won’t happen’—has not been paying attention. Because just this week, Elon Musk and Donald Trump put Americans in danger.

    “We have citizens in dangerous corners of the world who were suddenly locked out of their emails and cut off from an app that is meant to help address threats like kidnapping—so no one should be shrugging this off and just saying ‘well what’s the worst that could happen.’ Because this can get really, really bad really, really fast.


    “And if anyone is thinking ‘well it’s okay, we have guardrails, we have laws’—make no mistake, even though Trump and Musk have absolutely zero legal authority to hold up any federal payments that are law, that has not stopped them so far.

    “As we’ve seen—they are already halting other funds illegally, they are already firing government watchdogs and officials left and right, regardless of our laws. They are already putting forward blatantly unconstitutional executive orders.

    “The fact of the matter is—Trump and Musk have yet to find a law they think applies to them. They think because they are rich and powerful, they get to call all the shots—regardless of the courts and Congress. But that’s just not how things work in this country. Billionaires are not above the law. Neither are Presidents.”

    “And, M. President, I know we are discussing the Vought nomination now, but I want to talk about someone who has not been nominated to anything, he’s not been elected to anything, and yet he is serving as de facto Co-President—Elon Musk. Arguably he is more important and more influential than the elected sitting President. And he has proven himself in lock-step with Russ Vought, who we are voting on tomorrow, when it comes to slashing programs that matter to American families and ignoring the laws of our nation.

    “In recent days, Musk has been busy illegally shuttering USAID and cutting off foreign assistance programs—which, as I’ve said, will lose jobs for Americans, lose lives in countries around the world, and lose leadership as adversaries like China fill the gap.


    “Shockingly, Musk has even had people fired for denying his lackeys classified resources that they had no authority to access. And last weekend, we all learned Elon Musk essentially commandeered access to the Treasury Department’s most sensitive payment system handling six trillion dollars every year and managing nearly all of our federal disbursements.

    “It’s a system that contains extremely sensitive personal and commercial information and I’ve been hearing from people across my state who are truly alarmed about what Musk and his associates having access to this system could mean for their data—and for funding that they count on.

    “Let’s not mince words here: an unelected, unaccountable billionaire—with expansive conflicts of interest, deep ties to China, and an indiscreet axe to grind against perceived enemies—is hijacking our nation’s most sensitive financial data system and its checkbook. So that he can illegally block funds to our constituents based on the slightest whim or wildest conspiracy. Funds—mind you—that Congress, on a bipartisan basis, passed.

    “Some Republicans are trying to suggest that Musk only has ‘viewing access’ to Treasury’s highly sensitive payment system as if that’s acceptable either! But why on earth should we believe that? Particularly when Musk himself is saying the exact opposite loudly and repeatedly for everyone to hear.

    “What funds will Elon target next—life saving medical research? Homelessness assistance? Food banks? We already know he is falsely attacking faith-based organizations that help folks—and promising to cut off funds based on conspiracy theories. In other words: the world’s richest man has vowed to cut off funding that helps the least among us. Think about that.

     “And next—think about how many dollars he himself makes from government contracts. I mean, seriously: the richest man in the world, with countless government contracts, and ties to our adversaries is taking over the Treasury in the name of fighting corruption? The irony is almost as rich as Musk himself.

    “And let me underscore, M. President, just how dangerous this is—because now that Trump has handed over Treasury’s checkbook—what if Elon decides he doesn’t like how Rivian is getting federal funds to build an EV manufacturing facility, so what next?

    “All Elon has to do is say they’re ‘woke,’ and he can convince Trump to illegally cut off those funds? Is that how this works now?

    “Maybe Elon will decide he doesn’t like that Blue Origin—and not SpaceX—gets a contract, so he wants to gum up the works on their payments. Is that how this works?

    “Maybe Elon decides he wants to get into electronic health systems—and maybe he wants to punish hospital systems that don’t take him up on whatever he’s selling. Private corporations and competitors need to take note—the potential for abuse and corruption by Elon, especially considering his track record, is pretty much limitless.

    “And it is not just Treasury—Musk and his henchman are launching a full-scale invasion of sensitive data systems across government. We are talking about the Small Business Administration. We are talking about NOAA. We are talking about Medicare. The reporting is now clear they are not just looking either—they are directly making changes to some of those critical systems.

It is to fight for the people who sent us here—and to defend the Constitution.

    “So Democrats will be pushing back with the tools we have—we will speak out, we will press this administration, we will open investigations, and we will demand accountability—but one tool we do not have is a majority in Congress. So that means, M. President, our Republican colleagues have to say ‘enough.’ We need them to join us. We need them to stand up to the corruption and lawlessness and stand up for the people they represent.

  • MIL-OSI China: China researchers clone 4,000-year-old native swine breed

    Two cloned piglets born in central China’s Hunan province are expected to promote China’s pork industry and diabetes treatment research while preserving a 4,000-year-old local breed once pushed to the brink by foreign competitors.
    According to the Xiangtan municipal livestock breeding station, the cloned Shaziling piglets, delivered via surrogate mother on Jan. 24 in Xiangtan County, mark a milestone in China’s decade-long push to preserve indigenous livestock breeds using biotechnology.
    Once a staple in Hunan’s famed hongshao rou (braised pork), Shaziling pigs, a breed native to Xiangtan, nearly vanished as industrial foreign breeds dominated Chinese farms in previous years.
    It is considered a precious genetic resource and was added to China’s national animal genetic resource protection list in 2006.
    To protect the genetic resources of the Shaziling pig, the breeding station initiated the somatic cell cloning experiment with support from a research team led by Yin Yulong, a Chinese Academy of Engineering academician and chief researcher at the Insitute of Subtropical Agriculture under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, starting in June 2024.
    Researchers utilized frozen ear tissue cells from Shaziling pigs to create fibroblast cells, leading to successful embryo construction, cultivation, and transplantation. On Jan. 24, the surrogate mother pig successfully gave birth.
    Tan Hong, head of the breeding station, said that the two piglets display characteristic features of the Shaziling pig, such as a short snout, butterfly ears, and cow-like eyes. They are healthy and being cared for by skilled technicians.
    Yin noted that the research achievement goes far beyond agriculture.
    He emphasized the anatomical, physiological, immunological, and genomic similarities between pigs and humans. These similarities make pigs ideal models for diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular ailments. Their similar organ size and structure enhance their prospects in xenotransplantation research.
    Wu Maisheng, a researcher at the Xiangtan Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, revealed that porcine-human xenotransplantation studies conducted in Hunan since 2005 have found that the Shaziling pig possesses the highest biosafety and is the best donor for such transplants. The success rate for using Shaziling pig islet cells in diabetes treatment reached 95.45 percent.

    Future research will focus on the cloned pigs’ adaptability to environmental conditions, growth, and reproductive performance, as well as in-depth studies of the progeny’s weight gain, meat quality, and genetic traits.
    Yin also said that the Shaziling pig presents extensive application prospects as a food source, disease model, and donor for xenotransplantation. It is increasingly significant in modern agriculture, medical research, and clinical treatments.
    The research team aims to utilize cloning technology to replicate superior Shaziling pigs with high feed conversion rates, meat yield and quality.
