     — Today, Governor Mike Kehoe announced seven appointments to various boards.

    Mason Bell, of Williamsville, was appointed to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board.

    Dr. Bell currently serves as the chief financial officer and veterinarian at Bell Veterinary Services, LLC DBA Hillcrest Animal Hospital. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Beef Cattle Practitioners, American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the Society for Theriogenology. Dr. Bell earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine.

    Mark Ellebracht, of Excelsior Springs, was appointed to the Missouri Board of Probation and Parole.

    Mr. Ellebracht is a principal partner at The Injury Council, a personal injury law firm in Clayton, Missouri. Ellebracht formerly served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023 for District 17 and later worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Clay County. He also served as a squad leader for the United States Army. Mr. Ellebracht earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from William Jewell College and his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia.

    Marcy Hammerle, of Troy, was appointed to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board.

    Dr. Hammerle is an associate veterinarian at Elm Point Animal Hospital. She previously served as board chair and president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and is an active member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation, Therapeutic Horsemanship Board, and the Greater St. Louis Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Hammerle earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine.

    Jeremy Manley, of Springfield, was appointed to the State Board of Mediation.

    Mr. Manley is the president and business representative of Teamsters Local 245. From 2017 to 2019, Manley served as a Democrat, Republican, Independent Voter Education (DRIVE) representative for International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Washington, D.C. Prior to working with Teamsters, Manley worked as a delivery driver for the United Parcel Service.

    Michael Pfander, of Clever, was reappointed to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board.

    Dr. Pfander is a small animal veterinarian at Cottage Veterinary Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He has served on the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board since 2012. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Pfander also worked as an adjunct professor at Drury University from 1996 to 2012. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, Southwest Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, and the University of Missouri-Columbia Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association. Dr. Pfander earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

    Christopher Rohlfing, of Fayette, was reappointed to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board.

    Mr. Rohlfing is the owner and operator of Production Agriculture. He has been a public member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board since 2014. Prior to starting his own business, Rohlfing worked as the member services manager at Boone Electric Cooperative before retiring after 33 years. He’s also worked as an independent crop insurance agent since 1983. Mr. Rohlfing is as a member of the Deans Strategic Advisory Committee for the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Veterinary Medicine and is the president of the Howard County Farm Bureau. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Master of Business Administration from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

    Rodney Schad, of Versailles, was appointed to the State Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority.

    Mr. Schad is the owner and operator of Schad Farm where he raises cattle, corn, soybeans, and wheat. He formerly represented the 115th District in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2005 to 2012 and later as the Morgan County Commissioner from 2012 to 2020. Schad is an active member of the First Christian Church of Versailles and the Missouri Farm Bureau. He also serves as a board member for several organizations, including Quality Industries, Show Me Christian Youth Home, Highland Mutual Insurance Company, and the Missouri Public Defender Commission.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME), is releasing the following statement in response to a decision made by the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to close dozens of Social Security offices across the country — a move following the February dismissal of 7,000 Social Security Administration (SSA) employees and one that could result in delayed or missing checks for the over 70 million Americans that rely on Social Security. The statement comes after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik, a billionaire, insisted during an interview that only ‘fraudsters’ would complain about missed Social Security checks, not honest Americans.   

    “The Trump Administration’s callous indifference to the millions of Americans who rely on the monthly Social Security checks they have earned – and the millions more Americans who are relying on Social Security for their planned retirements — is the most direct assault on this vital program in its almost 100 year history. It is disrespectful, destructive, and dangerous,

     “These payments have been penciled onto every page of Americans’ calendars for generations. These checks signify promises kept to millions of our family members and friendly neighbors when they reach into their mailbox every month. Household budgets rely on the timely arrival of these earnings to pay for mortgages, heat, and medications.

     “When the Trump White House and its corporate-suite cabinet sends reckless DOGE computer engineers into the Social Security networks, threaten cuts to the committed workforce who carefully manage this system, make it harder for citizens to interact with that workforce, or scoff at older Americans justifiably worried about late payments — as one of his billionaire cabinet members did just this week — this dismissive public stance frightens the very people who literally built this country, and who deserve a hell of a lot better.

     “Social Security is not social media; this ‘move fast and break things’ approach they seem to be following is a betrayal of the public trust.

     “The President has said repeatedly, during the campaign and since, that he would protect Social Security — but what’s happening now in his name is anything but protection, and he should put a stop to it.”

  • MIL-OSI Global: Google’s AI-generated search feature hasn’t yet changed how users interact with search results

    Google announced the launch of AI Overviews, its generative artificial intelligence-fuelled search feature, in May 2023. Initially named Search Generative Experience, AI Overviews offers Google users AI-generated answers by sourcing and summarizing information from different websites.

    These AI responses are positioned at the top of the page for immediate visibility. The aim is to improve user experience by providing an alternative and more straightforward way to access information while enhancing the relevance of search results.

    This feature has slowly been offered to the public, having initially been made available exclusively in the United States. AI Overviews is available worldwide and has been rolled out to more than 100 additional countries, including Canada.

    AI Overviews represents a key effort by Google to capitalize on the rapid emergence of generative AI technology amid fierce competition between AI-enabled search engines in the market. It’s a direct response to Open AI’s SearchGPT and Microsoft Bing’s Deep Search, which is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

    At the same time, conversational AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini continue to resonate with users worldwide. Google’s investment in AI is critical to its ability to stay in the AI race among the other tech giants.

    Concerns about AI-assisted search

    The implementation of AI Overviews, however, has raised concerns among businesses, website managers and online advertisers.

    Critics worry this feature could decrease traffic to their websites if users were to rely too heavily on AI Overviews and ignore the links to websites displayed in the search results.

    Paid advertisements and sponsored content play a pivotal role in the revenue streams of companies and website operators. If traffic to websites diminishes, the incentive for these companies to invest in these advertising formats could decline, potentially disrupting the multi-billion-dollar online advertising industry.

    To better understand this, we conducted a study at HEC Montréal’s Tech3Lab to investigate the potential impact of search generative AI features like AI Overviews on user perceptions and behaviours compared to those associated with regular online search queries.

    User search behaviour and perceptions

    We developed a set of four Google search scenarios, either AI-assisted or non-AI-assisted. The two AI-assisted scenarios included an AI-generated overview at the top of the search results, while the two non-AI-assisted scenarios consisted of a regular Google search experience.

    For each scenario pair, participants performed a search for informational purposes and another search related to a product purchase. During each search task, users’ click behaviour (the number of clicks), cognitive load (the mental effort required to process information) and visual attention were measured.

    We used pupillometry — measuring pupil size and reactivity — and analyzed screen recordings to track these metrics. After completing each task, participants shared their perceptions through questionnaires.

    Through this experimental approach, we were able to achieve two goals. First, we determined whether AI-generated overviews in search results significantly impact user perceptions of the relevance, usefulness and satisfaction with search results.

    Second, we observed whether such generative AI summaries significantly impacted user behaviour in terms of the number of clicks on links appearing in the search results. This provided insight into the potential impact generative AI summaries might have on organic search traffic.

    What did we find?

    The results of our study suggest that the presence of AI-generated overviews has no significant impact on user perceptions of relevance, usefulness and satisfaction with search results. There was also no significant impact on the clickthrough rate — the ratio of clicks on a link — on links in the search results.

    The presence of AI Overviews did not significantly reduce the users’ interaction with Google’s classic list of suggested pages. While this finding indicates AI Overviews might not lead to an immediate or significant shift in website traffic, it’s important to note that user interactions could evolve over time as people become more familiar with this new feature.

    As such, the competition among the market leaders operating in the online search space will likely continue to intensify. For example, earlier this month, Google rolled out a new feature called AI mode that delivers additional AI-generated results for some users.

    Tech giants like Google and Microsoft will continue to vie for dominance in the market, aiming to create more engaging, higher-value search experiences for their online users.

    The changes encourage local businesses to play a more active role in Canberra’s nightlife.

    The ACT Government has introduced reforms to improve Canberra’s night-time economy. The changes will help create a more vibrant artistic and cultural scene.

    These reforms aim to help local licensed businesses to play a more active role in the city’s nightlife.

    Changes that began on 2 July 2024 include:

    • Supporting new businesses to begin trade as soon as possible. New businesses can now trade under an interim liquor license. This is possible where there is a delay on issuing the license because of the suitability of the premises. However, the Commissioner must be satisfied that the premises can still safely offer alcohol.
    • Supporting businesses to showcase Canberra’s artistic and cultural expression. License fees have been reduced by 80 per cent for some venues. This includes those with an occupancy of 150 people or less that showcase artists, musicians and other cultural activities.
    • Extending business trading hours to celebrate one-off special events. Where the Head of Access Canberra declares a special event, businesses will have greater flexibility. They will be able to extend their trading hours and celebrate events such as sports finals or holiday celebrations.
    • Providing 10 free authorisations for businesses to temporarily extend their trading hours and/or amend their floor plans. This will save liquor licensees time and money when temporarily extending their trading hours and/or changing the floor plan of a licensed premises. They will not have to move to a higher annual fee category or pay an application fee to get an authorisation. This amendment will allow for 10 authorisations in any 12-month period – an increase on the current 6.

    These changes follow the reforms that commenced from 1 January 2024, including:

    • allowing smaller licensed restaurants and cafés to trade until 2am
    • reducing liquor licensing fees for smaller restaurants, cafés, bars and general licences
    • removing the need for general licensed businesses to have separate areas for the sale of liquor for on-premises and off-premises consumption.

    Herbert’s, a small eatery serving local beers and wines in Evatt are excited by the changes. They say they have come just in time for summer.

    “This is an absolute game changer for small local venues like ours,” co-owners Kirstin and Dino Martiniello said.

    “At Herbert’s we proudly host local artists and musicians. We are so pleased that venues like ours are recognised and encouraged to continue this through meaningful and tangible support like fee reductions.”

    The ACT Government is committed to engaging with businesses and the community on noise settings for the City Centre Entertainment Precinct.

    It plans to review how noise complaints are managed. Consultation on this will start soon.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding eligible private nonprofit (PNP) organizations in the Chickasaw Nation of the April 23, 2025, deadline to apply for low interest federal disaster loans to offset economic losses caused by the severe storms occurring March 14–15, 2024.

    The disaster declaration covers the Chickasaw Nation.

    Under this declaration, SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to PNPs providing non-critical services of a governmental nature who suffered financial losses directly related to the disaster. Examples of eligible non-critical PNPs include, but are not limited to, food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools and colleges.

    EIDLs are available for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the PNP did not suffer any physical damage. The loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills not paid due to the disaster.

    “SBA loans help eligible small businesses and private nonprofits cover operating expenses after a disaster, which is crucial for their recovery,” said Chris Stallings, associate administrator of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the SBA. “These loans not only help business owners get back on their feet but also play a key role in sustaining local economies in the aftermath of a disaster.”

    The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates as low as 3.25% and terms up to 30 years. Interest does not accrue, and payments are not due, until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement. The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition.

    The SBA encourages applicants to submit their loan applications promptly. Applications will be prioritized in the order they are received, and the SBA remains committed to processing them as efficiently as possible.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Oxford City Council secures £450,000 of National Lottery funding to support the Leys Youth Hub

    Oxford City Council is celebrating after securing £450,000 in National Lottery funding from the Reaching Communities programme to support the Leys Youth Hub. 

    This vital funding will help sustain the staffing team and activity programme over the next four years, ensuring the hub provides opportunities for young people in Blackbird Leys. 

    The Leys Youth Hub, located at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, last year received funding from the Youth Investment Fund to create a dedicated space for young people. The new facility, which will be run by Oxford City Council’s Youth Ambition service and is in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council’s Targeted Youth Support Service (TYSS), will feature a climbing wall, teaching kitchen, music and media studio and social areas, offering a diverse range of activities designed to empower and engage young people. 

    Construction contractors ODS started the building work on site in September 2024, with the Youth Hub expected to open at the end of Spring 2025. 

    The additional funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK, will be crucial in supporting the hub’s operations for its first four years, with a tapered approach in the third and fourth years to work towards a sustainable, community-led model. The Youth Investment Fund has funded the construction work and staffing programme to date. 

    Oxford City Council will continue working closely with partners, including Oxfordshire County Council’s Targeted Youth Support Service (TYSS), and young people to shape the programme and ensure it meets the needs of the local community. 

    Councillor Chewe Munkonge, Cabinet Member for a Healthy Oxford, said: 

    “We are delighted to receive this funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which will make a real difference to young people in Blackbird Leys. The Leys Youth Hub is an investment in their future, providing a safe and supportive space where they can develop new skills, build their confidence, and have their own community space to form connections and have fun. This funding ensures we can continue to deliver a high-quality programme that truly benefits the community, and I’m looking forward to seeing the newly-completed Hub open soon!”

  • MIL-OSI Global: Ten years after the Modern Slavery Act, why has this ‘world-leading’ legislation had so little impact?

    The UK’s 2015 Modern Slavery Act is ten years old on March 26. When it was passed, it was billed as “world-leading” legislation – the first of its kind to introduce a dedicated legal framework to deal with modern slavery.

    But ten years on, the evidence tells a different story. The numbers of people identified as potential victims are higher than they have ever been. Yet very few people have been prosecuted. What went wrong with this “groundbreaking” law?

    The Modern Slavery Act was the final piece of legislation under the 2010-15 coalition government. Championed by then home secretary Theresa May, the act was primarily about beefing up the criminal justice approach. While criminal offences like human trafficking, forced labour, slavery and servitude were previously dealt with in different pieces of legislation, the act consolidated them into one place.

    The aim was to make it easier to identify and prosecute traffickers (who May referred to as “the slave-drivers”), while offering some protection to their victims.

    It also included a role for the private sector through a “transparency” clause. This required bigger businesses to report what they are doing to prevent modern slavery in their supply chains. And, it created an Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner to “encourage good practice”. Other new measures included a legal defence to victims who had been forced to commit crimes, and giving law enforcement new powers to confiscate assets from traffickers.

    However, the act did little to stop modern slavery happening in the first place. The prevention strategy mainly consisted of poster campaigns in airports and immigration processing centres.

    Some argued that the act dodged the big issues around work and immigration. For example, by not addressing weaknesses in labour protections and the additional vulnerabilities migrant workers faced thanks to May’s “hostile environment” migration policies.

    As prime minister, May touted the UK’s “world-leading” efforts on modern slavery to the global stage at the UN General Assembly. But a decade later, the impacts have been less than stellar.

    What has been its impact?

    The act has certainly raised the issue’s profile in the last ten years. Businesses now have to report on what steps they are taking to tackle modern slavery. But there are no penalties if they do not comply, and there has been limited progress on exploitation in supply chains. Recent cases involving McDonald’s and other supermarkets prove that businesses are not spotting the signs or acting effectively to prevent the issue.

    The number of people identified as potential victims of modern slavery has increased significantly in the last ten years: 19,125 in 2024, nearly six times as many as in 2015. That’s at least partly because the act has improved awareness among frontline responders (organisations who refer potential victims for support).

    But while more people who may have experienced modern slavery are being identified, prosecutions are very low. Only 64 adult offenders were sentenced between 2017-19 for over 22,756 potential victims of modern slavery identified over the same period. There are many reasons for this, but one is that victims may not come forward, fearing they may be detained or deported.

    Immigration policies passed by the last Conservative government have also rolled back protections for modern slavery victims. In passing the Nationality and Borders Act and Illegal Migration Act, the government argued that people arriving on small boats were abusing the protections offered through the Modern Slavery Act to evade deportation. Far from world-leading, the UK became non-compliant with international anti-trafficking and human rights laws.

    Many of the concerns raised during the drafting of the legislation have proven accurate. Despite repeated commitments to create a unified labour inspectorate, successive governments have dodged reform of labour market regulation.

    The UK’s immigration and work visa system has also led to the potential for exploitation. Even legal migration routes and the sponsorship visa scheme have created conditions for people to be exploited. For example, in sectors such as agriculture or social care, where intermediaries sell false promises regarding employment and conditions in the UK.

    Added to this, the system of support which recognised victims of modern slavery can access is creaking under pressure. It has expanded beyond what was envisaged in its original design, and there are backlogs in decision-making and questions over how appropriate it is. Thousands have declined formal identification and support because they do not feel it is worthwhile or appropriate for them.

    Research has also shown that victims are not necessarily getting the support or legal defence they are entitled to. An unknown number of victims are likely to be in the UK’s prisons, where they may be subject to further exploitation.

    Stopping modern slavery

    The theory behind the Modern Slavery Act was that if you “get tough” on criminals and improve support for victims, you can reduce exploitation. But that hasn’t worked – modern slavery is still a huge problem in the UK.

    Changing this means taking prevention seriously, and addressing the conditions and inequalities that lead to exploitation in the first place. Like other global challenges, modern slavery stems from issues like poverty, inequality and discrimination and gender-based violence.

    My colleagues and I at the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre recently noted in our report on policy priorities that the government has an opportunity to prevent modern slavery through some of its other crime prevention efforts, as well as in forthcoming legislation such as the employment rights bill.

    Without a clear and evidence-based strategy, modern slavery in the UK will persist or even grow, and the Modern Slavery Act will remain an innovative, but ultimately ineffective tool in the fight against exploitation.

    U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) introduced legislation – alongside Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) – that would provide stable energy rates and a reliable electric grid to states in the Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA) region, including Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

    The Southwestern Power Administration Fund Establishment Act would give SWPA the authority to operate on a self-funding, revolving Treasury fund to help provide the affected states with a long-term, reliable financing source. This would give the region more stable funding to lower customer rates, which can be highly volatile due to market demand and weather. Furthermore, the legislation would provide SWPA clarity to plan long-term infrastructure improvements and power replacement and allow SWPA to avoid drastic and unnecessary spikes in power rates charged to its wholesale customers in an extreme or multi-year regional drought situation.

    “It is critical that Kansans have access to reliable electricity at stable rates, especially during extreme and dangerous weather,” said Senator Moran. “This legislation will provide funding stability that will allow energy providers to make needed infrastructure improvements and prevent Kansans from suffering mass power outages.”

This funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration, supports airport improvement projects across the state such as reinforcing taxiway structural integrity, expanding terminal buildings to accommodate more passengers and aircraft operations and implementing modernization measures. These measures include reducing noise pollution for nearby residents, increasing clean energy opportunities, improving drainage infrastructure and mitigating wildlife attractants.

    Earlier this month, Duckworth and Durbin sent a letter to Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy criticizing the Trump Administration’s mismanagement of federal funding for Illinois transportation and infrastructure projects.     Evolve, in partnership with Winchester City Council, has successfully completed the delivery of its Creative Industries Growth Programme.

    Fully funded by Winchester City Council via the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the series of free masterclasses, covering subjects such as business planning, Intellectual Property Law and branding and marketing, were held between January and early March. 

    The programme, which was curated based on the feedback provided by local creatives, was designed to support small businesses and freelancers within the sector to take their business to the next level. Over the course of nine sessions, over 100 creatives from different businesses across the district attended.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Coalition Sues Trump Administration For Dismantling Department of Education, Hurting All Students

    Washington, D.C. — Advocacy organizations representing millions of educators, civil rights champions, school employees, students, and families will file a lawsuit Monday to stop the Trump Administration’s illegal attempts to dismantle the United States Department of Education. The plaintiffs include the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), public school parents, The National Education Association (NEA), and AFSCME Maryland Council 3, and they are supported by Student Defense and Education Law Center (ELC).

    Since taking office, Trump Administration officials have taken an escalating series of steps to dismantle the Department, including a series of staff reductions and the termination of $1.5 billion in current contracts and grants for Congressionally-authorized programs and activities. On March 11, the Secretary instituted a Department-wide reduction in force, which, when combined with prior staff reductions, slashes the already lean Department workforce in half.  

    Most recently, on March 20, 2024, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order formally instructing Secretary Linda McMahon to pursue “all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States.” The very next day, President Trump indicated that the administration would move the higher education student loan portfolio to the Small Business Administration and disability-related programs to the Department of Health and Human Services.  

    “Taken together, Defendants’ steps since January 20, 2025, constitute a de facto dismantling of the Department by executive fiat…,” the complaint argues. “But the Constitution gives power over ‘the establishment of offices [and] the determination of their functions and jurisdiction’ to Congress—not to the President or any officer working under him.” Because it is a Congressionally-created federal agency, legally eliminating the Department of Education, or its constituent offices, or transferring them to other federal agencies, requires Congressional approval. 

    While state and local governments are responsible for the vast majority of America’s public education system, Congress created the Department to help bridge longstanding gaps in educational opportunity and provide critical funding and supports to students. The Department fulfills that role by enforcing civil rights laws, supporting students with disabilities, promoting equal educational opportunities, bolstering the educator workforce, and administering the Federal Student Aid programs that place college within reach of working Americans. 

    Eliminating or effectively shuttering the Department puts at risk the millions of vulnerable students, including those from low-income families, English learners, homeless students, rural students, and others who depend on Department support. It also jeopardizes more than 400,000 educator jobs; makes it impossible for the Department to ensure that federal education funding actually is spent as Congress intended; threatens support for 7.5 million students with disabilities; and leaves millions of students vulnerable to discrimination. It could also reduce access to Pell Grants, upend repayments for student loan borrowers, and invite fraudulent and predatory behavior from unscrupulous institutions of higher education.

    The lawsuit alleges that actions to dismantle the Department exceed the constitutional authority of the executive branch and violate the federal Administrative Procedure Act. It asks the court to immediately halt the government’s attempt to dismantle the Department.

    “As a parent of a child with disabilities who has an Individual Education Program (IEP), I am deeply troubled by the severe cuts the Trump Administration has made to the Department of Education,” said Mara Greengrass, a Maryland mother who is a plaintiff in the litigation. “Funding for special education and the Department’s oversight have been crucial in ensuring my son receives the quality education he—and every child in this country—deserves.”

    In our recurring 10 Questions series, the Neag School of Education catches up with students, alumni, faculty, and others throughout the year to offer a glimpse into their Neag School experience and their current career, research, or community activities.

    Assistant professor Risa Isard is a trailblazer in the sport industry, dedicating her career to advancing equity in women’s sports. A researcher and consultant, she explores how stigma shapes the experiences of athletes, executives, and organizations. Her work sheds light on the economic, historical, and sociocultural forces that impact women’s sports, advocating for marginalized communities, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color.

    Isard’s expertise is widely recognized — her insights have been featured by the SXSW festival, MSNBC, the New York Times, ESPN, and more. As a thought leader, she has published in Sports Business Journal, Quartz, and espnW, influencing industry policies and sparking change. Beyond research, Isard is the founder of RISport, consulting for sport organizations on issues that matter to them most. Previously, she played a pivotal role at the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society Program, where she launched national initiatives, hosted leaders such as Michelle Obama and Billie Jean King, and created tools to expand access to sports. She has also held sport industry roles with Duke women’s basketball, the Phoenix Mercury, soccer legend Brandi Chastain’s foundation, national nonprofit KABOOM!, and the Fresno Grizzlies minor league baseball team.

    With a Ph.D. in Management from UMass Amherst and a specialized bachelor’s degree from Duke, Isard and her journey are a testament to the power of sports as a vehicle for social change.

    Q: Can you share examples from your research on how stigma influences the experience of stakeholders in women’s sports?

    A: Despite progress, stigma continues to impact professionals and fans in women’s sports. Employees in women’s sport face condescending remarks, such as being asked if they plan to work for a men’s team next year, suggesting that a role with the women’s team is not an achievement. Fans struggle to access games on TV or convince bars to air matches. These experiences stem from stigmas that affect investment, visibility, and respect, reinforcing the idea that women’s sports are less valuable. Yet, the passion of athletes, employees, and fans remains strong, fueling the fight for recognition and equality.

    Q: What are some effective strategies for advancing equity in sports organizations?

    A: My study on WNBA media coverage revealed that Black athletes, who comprised 80% of the league’s athletes and won 80% of postseason awards, received only half the media coverage of their white teammates. This research led to industry-wide discussions and tangible changes in organizations’ practices, resulting in more coverage for women athletes and Black athletes in women’s sports. By tracking disparities and committing to coverage that reflects the talent on the court, organizations can create systemic change. Intentional strategies like these help level the playing field for all athletes in women’s sports.

    Q: How does intersectional diversity shape decision-making and culture within sports organizations?

    A: That same study from above shows that Black WNBA athletes with a more masculine gender presentation receive the least media coverage, while white athletes with similar gender expressions receive the most. This highlights the need for an intersectional approach to understand practices in the sport industry. Media visibility translates into financial opportunities — endorsement deals depend in part on coverage, making representation crucial for an athlete’s career. Addressing these disparities can help advance social change, like closing the wealth gap.

    Q: What enduring stigmas persist in women’s sports and how can the industry address them?

    A: Women’s sports still battle misconceptions about their value and the athleticism they showcase, which impact player salaries, sponsorships, media coverage, and more. Changing this requires treating women’s sports with the same respect as men’s, which means investing in their growth and recognizing their commercial successes. Supporting women athletes isn’t just about fairness — it’s also a smart business move that drives profitability and advances the industry.

    Q: How should marketing and management strategies differ when promoting women’s sports, as compared to men’s sports?

    A: Women’s sports fans engage differently than men’s sports fans. For example, they tend to be more loyal and supportive of sponsors. They also are far more likely to consume their sports alone. This means marketing approaches should reflect fans’ unique behaviors rather than mimicking men’s sports strategies. Additionally, women’s teams face distinct challenges shaped by historical and societal factors, which can affect employees. Understanding these differences and responding to them are the keys to effective growth and investment in women’s sports.

    Q: How do you balance academic research with actionable insights for the sports industry?

    A: My research is shaped by real-world industry experiences and conversations, ensuring it addresses pressing issues. Once complete, I prioritize making my findings accessible — through op-eds in trade journals and via social media — so that decision-makers can apply research-driven insights. I am also proud to be a member of The Collective Think Tank, an initiative by global sport and entertainment agency Wasserman. This bridge between academia and industry helps sports professionals implement meaningful change.

    Q: Why do you think your research is important to the sports industry?

    A: My work aims to encourage the industry to grow in profitability through equity-driven business practices. Women’s sports have long been undervalued, but with research-backed strategies, we can create a future where fairness and commercial success go hand in hand. I hope my contributions help elevate women’s sports and build on the legacy of those fighting for progress.

    Q: Why did you decide to join UConn’s Neag School of Education?

    A: UConn has been a leader in supporting women’s sports, creating an environment where gender equity is normalized. This unique culture provides an ideal setting to study and influence the future of women’s sports while engaging with students who will shape the industry.

    Q: How can UConn positively impact the future of women’s sports?

    A: UConn’s early investment in women’s sports offers a model for other programs. By sharing successful strategies with the NCAA and beyond, UConn can help shape best practices for growing and sustaining women’s sports at all levels.

    Q: What trends in women’s sports do you find most promising and how can stakeholders build upon them?

    A: Women’s sports are expanding rapidly — leagues like the NWSL and WNBA are growing, while new leagues in hockey, volleyball, and softball emerge. Increased media coverage, investment, and purpose-built stadiums contribute to this momentum. With continued financial backing and visibility, women’s sports can reach new heights, solidifying their place in the broader sports industry.

    British exports shine in African infrastructure and renewable energy deal

    A partnership with UK Export Finance (UKEF) has enabled British firm Dints to secure a £12.5 million contract for infrastructure and renewable energy operations

    A partnership with UK Export Finance (UKEF) has enabled British firm Dints to secure a £12.5 million contract as supplier to MCA’s infrastructure and renewable energy operations in Angola.  

    Established 18 years ago, Dints is a London-based project integrator bringing together buyers, suppliers, logistics providers and funding partners.    

    A loan guarantee issued by UKEF to Apple Bank means that the Portuguese contractor operating in Angola, MCA, can now access finance to purchase more than £12.5 million in equipment through Dints. This will create opportunities for UK manufacturers to supply goods and services to the project. 

    Dints will provide vehicles, plant and machinery to support infrastructure and renewable energy projects in Angola. UKEF’s support helps companies like Dints to grow the economy, delivering on the Plan for Change.   

    Recent partnerships with Dints have helped to generate over £21 million in UK exports to markets including Peru, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and Botswana. These projects support jobs across the UK supply chain, as Dints’ suppliers come from regions including Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Humber, Staffordshire, County Armagh, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: eThekwini gears up for business fair

    The countdown to the North Regional Durban Business Fair has begun, which will see 150 businesses showcasing their products and services.

    The eThekwini Municipality is gearing up to host the North Regional Durban Business Fair from 28 – 30 March 2025 at the Bridge City Shopping Centre in KwaMashu, north of Durban. 

    The third Regional Fair for the 2024/25 financial year, will provide businesses a platform for networking, business growth, empowerment and collaboration.

    The exhibitors will also have opportunities to engage with potential customers, including government and municipal entities, financial institutions and fellow entrepreneurs. 

    The attendees will have the opportunity to participate in business seminars, where they will gain first-hand insights from industry leaders, as well as representatives from both private and public agencies.

    In a recent statement, the municipality said the exhibition will run simultaneously with the two-day Business Indaba, which will explore key industry trends and provide valuable business information and opportunities.

    “The Construction Development Indaba segment will kick off the exhibition on 28 March, bringing together established companies, agencies and entrepreneurs to present opportunities for emerging businesses. Topics will include how small, medium and micro enterprises can leverage artificial intelligence. 

    “Businesses will also be capacitated on how to engage in the Inner-City Regeneration and property development processes. This will offer valuable guidance for growth within the construction and development sectors,” the municipality said.

    The focus will then shift to the Women’s Economic Empowerment Engagement on 29 March, with discussions centred on how women can empower each other through mentorship, networking, and collaboration. 

    Leading South African business figures are expected to drive the discussions during the Women’s Economic Empowerment Engagement. 

    “eThekwini Municipality, which established the Women’s Economic Empowerment Programme, 19 years ago, will also highlight the achievements and present success stories of the programme, while outlining opportunities available for women entrepreneurs,” the municipality said.

    The fair will also serve as an important hub for presenting international opportunities, including imports and exports. The Junior International Chamber will be exhibiting at the fairat the International Pavilion. 

    Additional highlights include access to government and municipal services, exhibitions by tertiary institutions, a tech zone, live cooking demonstrations, and the “kiddiepreneur” garden, amongst others.

    The municipality has encouraged the public to support locally manufactured products, such as furniture, fashion, home essentials, agricultural products, health products, detergents and many more.
