Oklahoma – Today, Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) announced the winners of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for Oklahoma’s Fourth District:
Lillian Dai of Norman, Oklahoma has been named the first-place winner. Dai attends Norman North High School and studies art under her teacher, Sheila Hunter. For the Congressional Art Competition, Dai submitted a piece titled “Outside World,” which is a colored pencil drawing of a girl troubled by her mundane responsibilities and reminded of her own exhaustion merely by the things in her room. The drawing will be brought to Washington, D.C. and hang in the United States Capitol Building for an entire year.
“I am thrilled to congratulate Lillian on being selected as the Fourth District’s overall winner for the 2025 Congressional Art Competition,” said Congressman Cole. “Her colored pencil drawing is unique, intriguing, and very colorful. It is clear that Lillian is very talented, and I am sure she has a bright future in the arts ahead of her.”
When asked about her artwork, Dai said, “My artwork for the Congressional Art Competition is inspired by the common emotions and feelings that both I and my peers at high school typically feel as we take on harder classes and have increased responsibilities. It is not uncommon for us to spend late nights working. Exhaustion mingles with imagination, as we dream of a new environment or situation that will allow us a break. The indigo shadows envelop her form, reminding her of the work she needs to put in to accomplish her dreams, but for a moment the illumination of the fantastical scenery in her cup gives her the chance to daydream the world outside her room.”
“Lillian has made significant strides in the art world during her high school career. This year, she garnered notable recognition by winning two silver keys, a gold key, and a gold medal for her exceptional drawings in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. In addition to her recent achievements, Lillian secured second place in last year’s Congressional Art competition and is proud to represent Oklahoma’s 4th district this year. As her mentor, I have thoroughly enjoyed assisting Lillian in preparing for various art competitions and exhibitions. She shows a remarkable understanding of composition and color; her colored pencil pieces take many dedicated hours to complete. I eagerly anticipate her continued growth as an artist in her upcoming senior year,” said Hunter, Norman North High School Art Teacher.
In addition to naming Lillian the winner, two runner-up winners were named through a “People’s Choice” contest online, which was conducted through Congressman Cole’s social media channels and website with votes collected over the course of a week. Out of the 1,112 votes cast, artwork by Katelyn Estes and Emily Shields received the most. Both students’ artwork will be displayed in Congressman Cole’s Oklahoma office for the next year.
“Every year, so many accomplished high school students from across the Fourth District submit beautiful pieces of artwork to my office for consideration for the Congressional Art Competition. While only one piece can make its way to D.C., I think it is only right to recognize the other gifted artists by holding the People’s Choice competition. Congratulations to Katelyn and Emily for being selected as this year’s second and third-place winners. I am excited to have their beautiful art hanging in my Oklahoma office for the next year,” said Congressman Cole.
Katelyn Estes, the second-place winner, resides in Stratford, Oklahoma and attends Stratford High School, where she studies art under her teacher, Shea Meyer. For the contest, she submitted a piece titled “All Sass, All Heart,” which is a pencil drawing of a barrel horse turning around barrel with the rider partly visible.
“This drawing was inspired by my barrel horse, Jaz. She gives everything she has every time we race, and I wanted to reflect that in this piece – along with the bold, sassy personality that makes her who she is. That’s why I titled it All Sass, All Heart – Jaz,” said Estes.
“Katelyn is a great student. She works hard and takes any advice that I give to her and applies it to her work. She not only works in class, but she works on projects at home, especially when she is trying to get something done for a show or contest. I wish I had a class full of students like her. I am very proud of all she has accomplished so far, and I look forward to what she will do in the future,” said Meyer, Stratford High School Art Teacher.
Emily Shields of Purcell, Oklahoma is the third-place winner. She attends Purcell High School, where she studies art under her teacher, Jon Corea. For the Congressional Art Competition, Shields submitted artwork titled “Before the Storm,” which is an acrylic painting of a wild stallion observing the “calm before the storm” sunset in the Wichita Mountains while standing in a valley of Indian Paintbrushes.
When asked about her artwork, Shields said, “I was inspired by all of the incredible western paintings I see with the massive, golden storm clouds on the horizon. Those paintings always invoke such a sense of foreboding in me while also being breathtaking. I also wanted to include a homage to Oklahoma and my mother who loves Indian Paintbrushes. Overall, this painting was one of the first I have encouraged myself to see through to the end, and I am pleasantly satisfied with the results.”
“Emily is a remarkably talented and driven young artist. Her dedication to her craft is evident in the intense focus she brings to each piece she creates. Whether she’s working with bold colors, intricate details, or exploring new techniques, Emily consistently produces work that is thoughtful, expressive, and technically strong. Her creativity and commitment to improvement have always impressed me, and I continue to be amazed by the quality and originality of her artwork,” said Corea, Purcell High School Art Teacher.

MIL-OSI USA: Cole Secures Funding for Historic Areas Affected by Natural Disasters

Washington, D.C. – Through his legislation, The American Relief Act, Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) secured $50 million in competitive grant funding for the Historic Preservation Fund. This funding will allow areas, such as Historic Downtown Sulphur Commercial District, to be able to reconstruct and rehabilitate resources that were damaged or destroyed by natural disasters occurring in 2023 and/or 2024. After securing the funding, Congressman Cole released the following statement:
“As a lifelong Oklahoman, I know just how much devastation and destruction natural disasters, like tornadoes, can cause. This past Spring, multiple tornadoes devastated parts of my district, including the Town of Sulphur and its Historic Downtown Commercial District. Therefore, today, I am proud to announce that $50 million secured in my legislation is now available to apply for to help rebuild and support the local downtowns, businesses, and historic areas that have been crushed,” said Congressman Cole. “As the representative for the Fourth District of Oklahoma, I will always ensure that I am fighting for my local communities, and I look forward to seeing this funding be put to good use.”
How to apply for assistance:
Entities will be able to apply for two types of funding needs – preservation and capacity.
PRESERVATION:
For this grant, eligible applicants are state governments, city of town governments, county governments, Native American tribes, certain nonprofits, special district governments, public and state-controlled institutions of higher education, independent school districts, Native American tribal organizations, and private institutions of higher education. The funding can be used for construction and rebuilding efforts of Historic Preservation Funding sites that have incurred damage in a natural disaster in 2023 and/or in 2024.

CAPACITY:
For this grant, eligible applicants are nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status, Native American tribes, and state governments. This funding can be used for capacity building, completing compliance requirements, survey, planning, and design.

St. Louis CountyMissouri has recently been impacted by four series of major weather events. The first two declarations were approved by President Trump today. The third, covering the April 29th storms, was submitted by Governor Kehoe this week and is currently under review by the Administration. The tornado that struck areas of St. Louis on May 16th is under review by FEMA officials on site as we speak, and once their review is complete, the Governor will submit a new request to the Administration for federal support. As she has for each of the three previous storms, Wagner will sign a congressional letter of support, led by Rep. Wesley Bell, for the forthcoming gubernatorial disaster request covering the May 16th tornado.

SNAP CUTS
According to the USDA, 54,481 households in the Second Congressional District of Mississippi participate in SNAP. African Americans have the highest rate (13,838 households or 25.4%) of SNAP participation in the District.
HEALTH CARE CUTS
According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, nearly 14 million Americans will lose health care coverage due to this bill. These cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act will cause more than 664,000 Mississippi residents to lose health care coverage. This includes 35,337 residents in the Second Congressional District.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) and Rep. Brad Sherman (CA-32) hosted a roundtable with California Members of Congress and Los Angeles County officials to discuss ongoing recovery efforts following January’s devastating Palisades and Eaton Fires. Together, these fires scorched more than 37,000 acres, destroyed over 13,000 homes, displaced tens of thousands of residents, and claimed 30 lives.
The discussion offered an opportunity for the Members to hear directly from Los Angeles County leaders, including Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Chair of the Board and Supervisor for Altadena and Pasadena, about the ongoing challenges facing fire-impacted communities and the work being done to ensure communities can rebuild swiftly and safely. During the roundtable, Members and LA County officials discussed the status of ongoing debris removal and mitigation, soil testing and remediation, utility restoration, social and medical services, and housing solutions for disaster victims.
After the roundtable, Rep. Chu and Rep. Sherman released the following joint statement:
“In response to the many challenges our communities face following the Los Angeles fires, we were grateful to host today’s roundtable to discuss solutions with LA County officials leading recovery efforts on the ground and advocate for the urgent support our communities need to rebuild.”
The Members also emphasized the need to protect the federal agencies carrying out disaster recovery operations for their communities from the Trump administration’s mass layoffs of federal workers, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Business Administration, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and AmeriCorps . Lastly, the Members emphasized their commitment to securing additional federal disaster funding in Congress so that California disaster victims have the resources they need to rebuild their homes, businesses, and communities — just as Congress has done after every other major disaster across the country.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After an overnight debate that Republicans sought to hide from the American public, the House of Representatives voted 215-214-1 to advance H.R. 1, the One Big Ugly Bill. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28), a member of both the Ways and Means Committee and Budget Committee, voted no on this bill and issued the following statement:
“This is a shameful and cruel bill that House Republicans have spent the last week desperately trying to hide from the American people through midnight markups and votes.
“They could not bring this bill up in the light of day because they know it will kick 14 million Americans off of Medicaid and ACA health plans; effectively end abortion coverage on ACA marketplace plans; threaten the SNAP food assistance of nearly 11 million people; reduce or eliminate Pell Grants for more than 4 million students; and take away the Child Tax Credit from millions of American children simply because one of their parents is not a citizen,” said Rep. Chu.
“They know it will add as much as $5 trillion to the federal debt over the next ten years, an amount so high that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has confirmed it would lead to nearly $500 billion in automatic cuts to Medicare benefits. And by gutting the energy tax credits that Democrats created under the Inflation Reduction Act, it will immediately raise families’ energy prices and crush American manufacturing.
“And this bill wreaks all of this havoc for one reason: to give massive, permanent tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy. This is a reverse robin hood scheme that the CBO found is so unfair that it would actually make the poorest 10% of Americans even poorer while making the richest 10% even richer. So while Donald Trump and his billionaire donors will stuff their wallets, it’s my constituents who will be stuck paying the bill.”

“One of our country’s greatest assets is that we attract the most talented people from around the world to come to the U.S. to study and conduct research in groundbreaking fields. But by broadly revoking visas for Chinese students, the Trump Administration has yet again demonstrated they don’t value a free, democratic, and open society. Instead, they are undermining these very principles and removing students from our country simply because of their national origin. This will not make America stronger or more secure. In fact, the biggest beneficiary of this shortsighted decision is the Chinese government, which will now benefit from their most talented individuals staying in China instead of coming here and contributing to our country. This is just another example of the Trump administration targeting Chinese people instead of the Chinese government, unjustly assuming that every Chinese person is automatically a pawn for the Chinese Communist Party. The Trump administration’s xenophobic decision is reminiscent of the Chinese Exclusion Act and will only make the U.S. weaker.”

ALTADENA, CA– Yesterday, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) hosted a wildfire recovery housing roundtable and press conference to address the housing needs of survivors displaced by January’s devastating Eaton Fire. The roundtable brought together local nonprofits, housing advocates, and government officials from every level to discuss obstacles her constituents are facing in finding stable, affordable housing in their own communities.
“In the aftermath of the Eaton Fire, which displaced over 20,000 residents and destroyed thousands of homes, it’s clear that housing is the biggest barrier to recovery,” said Rep. Chu. “FEMA has provided $40 million in Housing Assistance, which has been critical in helping survivors find long-term housing. But there are still survivors who are slipping through the cracks, with many still struggling to secure stable housing in their own communities.”
Rep. Chu emphasized that FEMA must explore all available options for providing disaster housing assistance, including its Direct Lease program that provides housing directly to survivors. And she continues to urge the Administration to request $40 billion in supplemental disaster assistance needed to support long-term recovery efforts.

WASHINGTON – Representatives Steve Cohen (TN-9), Dina Titus (NV-01) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) today re-introduced the Horse Transportation Safety Act that would ban the transportation of horses across state lines in “double decker” trucks or trailers containing two or more levels on top of one another. Congressman Cohen, a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, in 2022 applauded the inclusion of the Horse Transportation Safety Act in the House-passed INVEST in America Act, the same year the Humane Society of the United States named him its “Humane Horseman of the Year.” Congressman Cohen has championed the measure since 2008. This year’s version of the bill currently has 17 bipartisan cosponsors.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“Horses deserve to be transported in as humane a manner as possible. Double-deck trailers do not provide adequate headroom for adult horses, and accidents involving double-deck trailers are a terrifying reminder that the practice is also dangerous to the driving public. I look forward to seeing this measure move forward as it did last year and be signed into law. Transporting horses can be precarious even under the best circumstances, and we should not compound the risks with unsafe double-deck trailers.”

“I find it difficult to express my dismay at the Ben Hooks Job Center being closed summarily and seeing the students sent home without notice. If there was a problem at the center, or at the centers like it nationally, the Department should have attempted to fix them but, instead of working with the contractors and helping students, they’ve just decided to send the students home. The Department of Labor apparently has no plans for an improved product or a new approach. This careless approach will upset the lives of too many ambitious members of a future workforce, and should be condemned. DOGE had recommendations for the Department of Labor and I suspect this is a product of its chainsaw work.

MIL-OSI USA: Reps. Lofgren, Min, and Thompson Lead Letter To Remove Cap on SALT Deductions and Lower Taxes for California Households

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), Dave Min (CA-47), and Mike Thompson (CA-04) led 18 of their California colleagues in a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) demanding tax relief for Californians. The lawmakers called for no cap on State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions in the GOP’s taxation bill. The letter was first reported by POLITICO.
The lawmakers wrote, “As the state with the largest economy in the country and the fourth largest economy in the world, California is by far the most generous of the thirteen donor states, meaning its residents paid far more in taxes to the federal government than it received in support. According to a 2022 Rockefeller Institute of Government study, California residents paid $83 billion more in federal taxes than they received in support. This means that for every dollar our constituents pay to the federal government, they get less than 88 cents in return. Our constituents pay more than their fair share of taxes to our nation and deserve tax relief in these difficult economic times.”
The lawmakers continued, writing, “We respectfully request that you honor your commitment to states’ rights and tax relief by not imposing another painful and massive tax on California families and small businesses by creating a new SALT deduction cap.”
The SALT deduction was created at the same time as the federal income tax in 1861 and was the first and only deduction allowed at that time. The SALT deduction has always been seen as the most important tax deduction, and is rooted in the principles of preventing federal overreach into states’ rights and preventing double taxation on hardworking Americans. The SALT dedication is as essential today as it was when it was first introduced in the 19th century.

During COVID-19, hospitals expanded capacity and invested in ventilators and PPE, often at the request of state or local governments. These funds from FEMA are crucial for California’s healthcare system, where nearly half of all hospitals operate at a loss.
In the letter, the lawmakers wrote, “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals in California were essential in treating patients while also maintaining their core mission of delivering healthcare services to everyone in need. California’s hospitals were critical in ensuring the health and safety of our communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the failure to deliver on the outstanding FEMA applications has left our hospitals in a precarious position. Nearly half of the state’s hospitals operate at a loss every day while providing care, and an additional 12% are only just above breaking even. Already, our communities are seeing service cuts and facility closures.
Moreover, by 2030, our hospital and health systems will face a critical inflection point as state requirements for seismic safety will go into effect. Current budget deficits, made worse by delayed FEMA payments, will only be exacerbated by the proposed decreases in federal reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid patients. This combination of factors could put California’s healthcare system, particularly for care providers in rural and low-income areas, on the brink of crisis.
It is critical to act quickly to allocate the remaining $460 million in federal reimbursements for hospitals’ costs incurred in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure that our healthcare systems receive the compensation they deserve. We stand ready to work with you to accomplish this.

We write to strongly urge your administration to prioritize nuclear nonproliferation, and to express concern that recent actions suggest a lack of appreciation for the vital role of U.S. leadership in these efforts.
Nonproliferation is not just about stopping the spread of nuclear weapons – it also includes securing and disposing of dangerous materials, preventing radioactive materials from falling into the wrong hands, and ensuring compliance with international nuclear agreements and export controls. This work is essential to safeguarding public safety, strengthening global oversight, and preventing nuclear accidents or terrorism.
Your administration’s actions have signaled an underappreciation of critical nonproliferation work. These actions include the hasty firing of over 300 National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) employees overseeing the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile in February and the redirection of $185 million from the NNSA’s Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation account in the recent full-year Continuing Resolution to the nuclear weapons activities account.
Reports also suggest your administration has suspended two key programs that provide vital assistance to international nuclear inspectors, including those monitoring Iran’s nuclear program. There are vacancies at several high-profile arms control and nonproliferation posts across the administration. The potential for large reductions in the workforce at the Department of Energy, including NNSA experts responsible for maintaining a safe and secure nuclear weapons stockpile, are cause for further concern.
Nuclear proliferation is a significant threat to U.S. and global security. At this critical juncture, U.S. allies are reevaluating their non-nuclear status, driven in part by concerns that the U.S. may no longer be a reliable partner. A world with more nuclear weapons is one in which every minor conflict has the potential to cause mass casualties, and where terrorists will have more opportunities to attempt to seize nuclear materials and weapons in nuclear-armed countries. A steadfast U.S. commitment to global nuclear security is more crucial than ever.
The 2024 Department of Defense Report on the Nuclear Employment Strategy states that “…deterrence alone will not address strategic dangers. Arms control, risk reduction, and nuclear nonproliferation are indispensable in preserving stability, enhancing predictability, deterring aggression and escalation, reducing the consequences if deterrence fails, and mitigating the risk of nuclear arms racing and nuclear war.”
The Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN) account at NNSA, which is being cut by $185 million, funds essential programs that protect U.S. national security. One is the Office of Global Material Security (GMS), which works globally to prevent terrorists from acquiring nuclear or radioactive materials for attacks on the U.S. GMS also collaborates with international partners to secure nuclear materials and combat trafficking. In addition, the DNN account funds the Office of International Nuclear Safeguards, which ensures that countries comply with International Atomic Energy Agency agreements and do not divert nuclear materials to weapons programs or pursue undeclared nuclear activities.
Underinvestment in nuclear security threatens research and workforce development programs focused on addressing national security challenges such as uranium enrichment, weaponization by foreign actors, the risks posed by artificial intelligence to nuclear security, and technical assistance to U.S. companies developing advanced nuclear reactors.
These actions raise serious concerns about your administration’s commitment to nuclear nonproliferation. As such, we respectfully request prompt answers to the following questions:

“Today, House Republicans—at the direction of Donald Trump—conducted the biggest theft in U.S. history. Their budget reconciliation bill is the largest transfer of wealth from the country’s most vulnerable to its richest.
At a time when Trump Tariffs are already causing prices to rise, House Republicans are making the lives of millions of Americans more even more difficult by passing a bill that rips healthcare from nearly 14 million Americans who rely on Medicaid including 300,000 in my district. They are stealing school meals from over 18 million children to pay for another $150 billion to the Pentagon for wasteful and dangerous projects like mass deportation flights, the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile, and boondoggles like Trump’s Golden Dome. But guess what? It doesn’t pay for itself; it would add $5 trillion dollars to the national debt.
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” This bill does the exact opposite. The Congressional Budget Office confirms the bill will raise incomes for the wealthiest 10% of Americans while slashing incomes for the poorest 10%. It also guts Medicare, SNAP, and Head Start, cutting vital lifelines from families who are already struggling.
The fact that so many Republicans voted to actively harm their own constituents just to curry favor with Donald Trump is shameful. I’m proud to stand with my Democratic colleagues who fought tooth and nail to delay this disaster. If Democrats were in control of Congress, we would vote on raising wages and cutting costs for working Americans, not handouts to billionaire donors.”

MIL-OSI USA: Reps. Garamendi, Thompson Demand Answers from Pentagon Over Plans to Use Travis AFB as Deportation Center

WASHINGTON, DC— This week, U.S. Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA-08) and Mike Thompson (D-CA-04) sent a joint letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth following reports that the Trump Administration is considering Travis Air Force Base as an immigration detention facility:
“It’s outrageous and inappropriate for the Trump Administration to use Travis Air Force Base as an immigration detention facility. Converting Travis into an immigration facility would undermine its vital national security mission. Travis Air Force Base has long been known as the ‘Gateway to the Pacific’ because it plays a crucial role in our national security by providing transportation for personnel and materiel around the world, particularly in support to Ukraine.” said the Representatives.
“Unfortunately, this is not the President’s first attempt to inappropriately utilize Travis Air Force Base, hampering its critical mission. In February we uncovered that Trump was using Travis’s military aircraft to transport undocumented individuals at three times the cost of commercial flights. Later that month, we were able to stop his attempt to send trained medical personnel to the proposed migrant detention camp in Guantanamo Bay. Now, the President wants to turn Travis into a mass deportation center. All these instances compromise our national security and are simply absurd.
“We are deeply alarmed by Trump’s blatant abuse of presidential power and his indifference to the rule of law. His utter disregard for the Posse Comitatus Act, which explicitly prohibits using active-duty military personnel for domestic law enforcement functions, is gravely concerning.
“We will continue Congress’s oversight role and work to ensure the American people understand the unlawful, wasteful, and dangerous path Trump is pursuing.”
This letter is the latest in a series of actions by Rep. Garamendi and Rep. Thompson to hold the Trump Administration accountable for misusing military resources in immigration enforcement.
In January, Rep. Garamendi’s office sent a letter demanding answers from the Department of Defense regarding the use of C-17s and C-130s from Travis Air Force Base to deport undocumented immigrants.
In February, Rep. Garamendi followed up with another letter pressing the Trump Administration over plans to deploy medical professionals to a proposed migrant detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. The Department of Defense recently responded to that inquiry, but Rep. Garamendi’s office found the response inadequate.

We are deeply frustrated and gravely concerned by recent reports regarding the proposed use of Travis Air Force Base (AFB) as a migrant detention site. In our previous correspondence, we requested detailed assessments on the impact of this plan, including its effects on military resources, infrastructure, ongoing construction projects, and overall readiness. To date, these critical details remain unclear.
While the federal government must address immigration challenges with humane and practical solutions, utilizing a military installation for civilian law enforcement and detention operations raises significant concerns about the misuse of military resources, operational readiness, and national security. The decision to use Travis AFB as a migrant detention center would both constitute a dangerous militarization of immigration enforcement and unnecessarily degrade military readiness.
Travis AFB plays a critical role in national security and is responsible for the global transportation of personnel and material. Whether providing aid to Ukraine or transporting personnel and equipment into the Pacific, Travis AFB must maintain its readiness to respond to global crises.
Additionally, military personnel’s involvement in civilian detention and law enforcement contradicts established legal frameworks, including the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts military engagement in civilian law enforcement. Assigning resources toward immigration enforcement risks blurring this crucial distinction and setting a concerning precedent for the use of military installations for purposes beyond their intended scope.
We demand answers from the Department of Defense to the following inquiries, no later than 30 days after receipt:
- Has the Department assessed the potential impact on Travis AFB’s infrastructure, specifically regarding water and energy, should a detention site be established at the base?
- How will diverting space and resources for a detention center at Travis AFB impact ongoing or future operations?
- How many migrants does the Department expect to detain at Travis AFB?
- Does the Department plan to reassign military personnel at Travis AFB to assist in detention operations?
- How will the Department ensure military personnel are not performing law enforcement activities at this detention center?
- What authorized and appropriated funds are being diverted to build and maintain this detention center?
We urge you to provide full transparency on how this decision will affect Travis AFB and to reconsider any action that might compromise military readiness and interfere with ongoing or future operations.

(May 22nd, 2025) — Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett voted YES on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The reconciliation bill advances President Trump’s agenda by renewing the President’s tax cuts, unleashing American energy, investing in border security, all while including the largest mandatory spending cut in history.
“President Trump and Congress have a mandate from the American people to implement the President’s agenda into law. I am proud to stand with President Trump in his fight to take back our country.” said Congressman Burchett.
The legislation renews the Trump Tax Cuts and includes the President’s promises of no tax on tips, made in America auto tax breaks, and tax breaks for seniors on social security.
“Without these important tax cuts, a family of four in Tennessee making $67,000 would see their taxes increase by $1,300 in 2026. That is unacceptable, and I will always fight to keep more money in the pockets of hard-working Tennesseans.”
The bill also protects and preserves Medicaid by rooting out waste, fraud and abuse. It removes deceased individuals, closes loopholes that allow illegal aliens to receive benefits, and ensures people who rely on Medicaid will have better access to the resources that they need.
“Illegals, able-bodied adults choosing not to work, and people who weren’t eligible for Medicaid in the first place are going to destroy Medicaid for vulnerable and deserving Americans. This bill protects and preserves Medicaid to ensure it better serves the least amongst us.”

MIL-OSI USA: During National Police Week, Representative Escobar, Democrats Call on Republicans to Honor their Commitment to January 6th Police Officers

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) joined Representatives Eric Swalwell (CA-14), Ted Lieu (CA-36), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Jason Crow (CO-6), Nancy Pelosi (CA-11), Dan Goldman (NY-10), and more for a press conference to continue their calls on Republicans to finally place the commemorative plaque honoring the U.S. Capitol police officers that protected the Capitol on January 6th.
As part of H.R. 2471, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022, Democrats included a provision requiring the Architect of the Capitol to obtain an honorific plaque listing the names of all officers from various law enforcement agencies who responded to the violence on January 6, 2021. This provision set a deadline of March 2023 for the plaque to be displayed.
Despite the plaque having been finished, House Republicans have refused to hang up the plaque, nor have they offered a timetable to do so.
In January, Congresswoman Escobar joined nearly 60 Democrats to request an update from Speaker Johnson about the status of the plaque’s placement.

MIL-OSI USA: Representatives Escobar, Frost, Crow Send Letter to Noem and ICE: Members of Congress Have a Legal Right to Enter Detention Facilities and Conduct Oversight

Following the alarming arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and threats of arrest to Members of Congress due to a recent oversight visit to the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility, U.S. Representatives Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), and Jason Crow (CO-6) today sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons to condemn the recent events and urge them to issue clarifying direction to DHS personnel about the explicit legal right that a Member of Congress has to access a detention center.
“During a site visit by three Members of Congress – Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver – Newark Mayor Ras Baraka waited outside in a fenced-in parking lot as protestors gathered on the other side of the fence,” they wrote. “He was told to leave the fenced-in part of the parking lot and, despite complying with the request, was arrested by ICE agents. Subsequently, a DHS spokesperson indicated that arrests of the attending Members of Congress are ‘on the table,’ alleging that one of them ‘body-slammed’ an ICE officer – a claim uncorroborated by witnesses or available video evidence.”
They continued, “The Department itself has affirmed the oversight duties of Members of Congress in guidance posted by ICE dated to February 2025. Arresting Members of Congress for performing their lawful oversight duties cannot be ‘on the table’ because that action would be explicitly unlawful.”
“We anticipate your prompt confirmation that clarifying direction has been given by May 17, 2025,” the representatives concluded.
