  • MIL-OSI China: 78th World Health Assembly opens in Geneva with focus on ‘One World for Health’

    GENEVA — The 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) opened Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme “One World for Health.”

    Addressing the opening ceremony, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said every WHA is significant, but this year’s gathering is particularly historic as member states are expected to consider and potentially adopt the pandemic agreement.

    Tedros also called on member states to approve the next round of assessed contribution increases to help ensure the WHO’s long-term financial sustainability and independence.

    Lei Haichao, head of China’s National Health Commission and leader of the Chinese delegation, delivered a statement during the general debate Monday, highlighting China’s active engagement in global health cooperation.

    He stated that over the past six decades, China has dispatched more than 30,000 medical personnel to 77 countries and regions, providing treatment to over 300 million patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, China supplied 500 billion personal protective items and 2.3 billion doses of vaccines globally.

    Lei reiterated that China will continue to support the WHO and multilateralism through concrete actions. He welcomed the organization’s internal reforms and expressed China’s willingness to work with other member states to build a global community of health for all.

    He also said that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and the WHA has long made clear decisions not to include in its agenda a so-called proposal on Taiwan’s participation in the annual assembly as an observer.

    The remarks made by a small number of countries concerning Taiwan disrupted the agenda and went against the will of the international community, he noted, adding that China urges these countries to stop interfering in its internal affairs.

    A major focus of this year’s assembly is the deliberation of the much-anticipated pandemic agreement. The WHO announced on April 16 that, following more than three years of intensive negotiations, member states have reached a consensus on a draft of the agreement.

    Delegates will also review the 2024 results report and deliberate on around 75 agenda items covering a wide range of topics, including the health and care workforce, antimicrobial resistance, health emergencies, polio and climate change, among other issues.

    Sustainable financing is another key issue. The Assembly is expected to discuss the proposed program budget for 2026-2027, which may be reduced from 5.3 billion US dollars to 4.267 billion dollars, alongside efforts to refocus priorities, strengthen core functions, and enhance organizational efficiency.

    The World Health Assembly is the WHO’s highest decision-making body and is typically held every May in Geneva. Its main responsibilities include setting organizational policies and reviewing and approving the program budget. This year’s Assembly is scheduled to conclude on May 27.

  • MIL-OSI China: EPC summit ends in multiple challenges

    Amid rising political and economic pressures, the sixth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) concluded in Tirana on Friday with few substantive results.

    Themed “New Europe in a new world: unity – cooperation – joint action,” the summit marked the EPC’s first gathering in the Western Balkans. Yet, despite mounting calls for solidarity, deep divisions and growing anxieties were difficult to settle.

    Around 50 national and regional leaders, as well as heads of European Union (EU) and international institutions, gathered in the Albanian capital, facing an array of unresolved issues ranging from enlargement fatigue and economic headwinds to migration dilemmas and pressing security concerns.

    Strategic anxiety

    Launched by French President Emmanuel Macron in May 2022, the EPC was intended to serve as a platform for policy coordination and political dialogue among European countries.

    Three years on, however, that vision appears increasingly strained.

    As transatlantic divisions deepen, particularly over the Ukraine conflict, European nations are increasingly grappling with the implications of a diminished American commitment.

    Agathe Demarais, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said that Europe is not a priority for the United States. “I don’t think that in any field — be it trade or defense or anything else,” she said.

    Faruk Boric, a political analyst from Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that for many years, the EU had followed the United States in terms of external politics. “But nowadays you can see that (U.S. President Donald) Trump is trying to make America great again without the EU,” he said.

    Europe’s economic concerns are also growing as a new wave of U.S. tariffs poses a serious challenge to sustaining growth and enhancing competitiveness. Negotiations between the EU and the United States on related issues have yet to yield a breakthrough.

    The EU is currently facing a 25 percent U.S. import tariff on steel, aluminum and automobiles, along with a 10 percent baseline duty on nearly all other goods. In April, Washington announced a 20 percent “reciprocal tariff” on EU products, which was later postponed for 90 days.

    Migration remains another intractable issue. The EU faces both illegal migration flows and labor shortages, creating both political and logistical strain. Recent discussions have broadened to include legal migration pathways, cooperation with countries of origin and transit, and managing so-called “weaponized” migration.

    Divisions persist among EPC-participating countries on migration-related issues. There is no consensus over the proposal of offshore deportation centers or to provide greater facilitation for admitting more young migrants.

    More symbolic than substantive

    Now in its sixth edition, the EPC still lacks a permanent secretariat, formal declarations or binding commitments. While it provides a flexible platform for dialogue, critics argue that a loose structure limits its political impact.

    “The EPC has become little more than a photo-op of unity,” said He Zhigao, associate researcher with the Institute of European Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. “It can neither replace the EU nor NATO. It offers no real public goods like security guarantees or economic aid, and it lacks the power to advance meaningful EU enlargement.”

    Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who co-chaired the meeting, called for a broader vision for the EPC beyond defense. “Why not imagine an EPC of education, science, and artificial intelligence and transnational lines beyond weaponry? A terrain of interconnected sources of knowledge, research and innovation, where Non-EU or Not-Yet-EU territories can become new frontiers for investments, free from bureaucracy, regulations and fiscal burdens…” he said.

    Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized at the summit Europe’s responsibility to pursue unity despite diversity, noting that Western Balkan countries “must have a clear perspective for integration.”

    However, no concrete steps toward accession were taken during the summit, once again leaving candidate countries in a state of waiting.

    With no non-EU country volunteering to host the 2026 summit, doubts about the EPC’s long-term viability continue to grow. As the European Policy Centre warned, “without reform, the EPC risks becoming irrelevant.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Moscow prepared for long-term work on settlement of Ukraine crisis

    Moscow is prepared for long-term work focused on reaching a settlement of the Ukraine crisis, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

    He confirmed that the Russian side is ready to engage in detailed and potentially long-term work to solve the crisis, adding that “the settlement involves a large number of nuances that need to be discussed.”

    At the same time, Peskov said that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump is not being prepared at the moment.

    Trump said Saturday that he will speak separately with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday to push for a ceasefire deal between the two countries.

    The Kremlin confirmed Monday that Putin would hold a telephone conversation with Trump later in the day.

    U.S. President Donald Trump said his telephone conversation Monday morning with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “went very well.”

    Trump made the remarks in a social media post after the two-hour phone call about the war in Ukraine, saying Russia and Ukraine would start a negotiation in which the conditions could only be set by the two sides themselves.

    “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” Trump wrote. “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”

    Trump noted that Russia wants to “do largescale TRADE with the United States” when the current catastrophic situation is over and he expressed the belief Ukraine could benefit from trade as well.

    “There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on Trade, in the process of rebuilding its Country,” the post read.

    Trump also said he shared details of the call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other leaders, including President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

    Britain and the European Union (EU) reached a wide-ranging agreement on Monday, which is expected to generate nearly 9 billion pounds (about 12.02 billion U.S. dollars) for the British economy by 2040, Downing Street announced.

    The deal was unveiled ahead of the first-ever UK-EU summit held in London, a meeting hailed by both sides as a “historic moment.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the agreement a “new chapter” in the relationship, as the two sides seek to reset ties after years of post-Brexit friction.

    Major highlights

    Hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the summit brought together von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. All three praised the deal as a major step forward during a joint press conference.

    One major highlight is a youth mobility scheme, described by Downing Street as “capped and time-limited,” and modeled on similar agreements with countries like Australia and New Zealand. The UK and EU will also work toward restoring British participation in the Erasmus+ academic exchange program, from which the UK withdrew during the current 2021-2027 cycle.

    Von der Leyen stressed that the mobility initiative will help rebuild long-term academic and cultural connections between European and British youth.

    The agreement also includes a sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) deal aimed at easing trade in food and agricultural goods. It will eliminate many routine checks on animal and plant products, cutting costs, reducing red tape, and reopening EU markets to British exports such as burgers and shellfish. It will also streamline goods movement between Britain and Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework.

    “This deal slashes red tape for exporters and will bring down food prices in British supermarkets,” Starmer said. “It directly impacts working people across the country.”

    In the fisheries sector, Britain and the EU agreed to a 12-year framework that preserves British access to EU waters and maintains current quotas for EU vessels. The British government will invest 360 million pounds to modernize its fleet and upgrade technology.

    “Under the old arrangement, we moved to year-by-year negotiations, which brought instability,” Starmer said. “This new deal offers predictability. Over 70 percent of our seafood is sold to the EU, so reducing red tape makes a material difference.”

    The agreement also lays the groundwork for defense and security cooperation, including a framework for UK participation in the EU’s SAFE defense program, which supports joint military procurement. Further negotiations will address financial contributions and supply chain arrangements.

    British holidaymakers also stand to benefit. The deal will expand access to Europol data and enhance cooperation on biometric and vehicle information. British travelers will once again be able to use eGates at EU border controls, streamlining passport checks.

    Surrender or step forward

    Despite broad support, the agreement has also faced criticism. Opposition Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch pledged to reverse it if her party returns to power, while Reform UK’s Nigel Farage called the move a “surrender” to Brussels.

    Fisheries groups also voiced discontent. The National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations said the deal “gives away the best card we still had,” benefiting large exporters and supermarkets more than independent fishers.

    Still, analysts viewed the agreement as a pragmatic step forward.

    “Fishing is a tiny part of the British economy, but critics will latch onto it as symbolic,” said Iain Begg, a European politics expert at the London School of Economics and Political Science. “However, reducing barriers to UK exports carries much greater economic weight — especially for defense contractors who could benefit from EU military procurement.”

    On the mobility deal, Begg noted that relaxed passport controls will be welcomed by many Brits, especially as the holiday season approaches.

    While some critics view the deal as a British retreat, others argue it signals a more mature phase in UK-EU relations.

    “If you frame this as winners and losers, you miss the bigger picture,” said Steve Nolan, senior economics lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, who sees the move as a mutual recognition that “we are close neighbors and strategic partners.” In a fragmented world, this is a sign that “grown-up negotiation is back on the table,” he added.

    No timeline has been set for the agreement’s full implementation, but Starmer said remaining negotiations would continue “with the same pace and intensity.” (1 British pound = 1.34 U.S. dollar)

    The development environment for China’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) continued to improve last year as their business revenues maintained a stable trend, according to a report released on Monday.

    The report, based on both online and offline surveys of SMEs in 50 cities across the country, assessed five major criteria by looking into the market environment, legal environment, financing environment, innovation environment and policy environment, respectively.

    The report said that SMEs in China maintained largely stable revenue growth in 2024, with 60 percent of them reporting increased or stable revenues last year.

    Meanwhile, nearly 64 percent of SMEs producing new, unique, specialized and sophisticated products have further plans for innovation and research and development investment, and 40.35 percent of such enterprises have investment plans in the coming year.

  • MIL-OSI China: Chinese economy shows strong resilience despite pressure

    China’s economy withstood pressure and maintained stable growth, continuing on a path of positive development amid internal challenges and increasing external shocks, an official of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday.

    NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui said at a press conference that the fundamentally positive outlook for China’s economy has not changed, and there are several favorable conditions for sustained economic recovery.

    China’s retail sales of consumer goods, a major indicator of the country’s consumption strength, expanded 5.1 percent year on year in April to 3.72 trillion yuan (about 517.27 billion U.S. dollars), NBS data showed.

    From January to April, the retail sales of consumer goods rose 4.7 percent year on year, accelerating from the 4.6-percent growth in the first three months, according to the NBS.

    In the first four months, the index of services production grew by 5.9 percent year on year, 0.1 percentage points faster than that of the first quarter, according to the NBS data.

    In April, the total value of goods imports and exports reached 3.84 trillion yuan, an increase of 5.6 percent year on year, the data showed. From January to April, the import and export volume of general trade grew by 0.6 percent year on year, accounting for 64 percent of the total trade value.

    In the first four months, private enterprises saw a year-on-year increase of 6.8 percent in imports and exports, representing 56.9 percent of the overall trade volume, an increase of 2.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

    China’s fixed-asset investment went up 4 percent year on year in the first four months of 2025 to 14.7 trillion yuan, the latest NBS data showed. Excluding the property sector, the country’s fixed-asset investment grew 8 percent year on year during this period.

    During the period, infrastructure investment rose 5.8 percent year on year, while manufacturing investment increased 8.8 percent, the data indicated.

    Driven by China’s consumer goods trade-in program, sales of home appliances and audio equipment surged by 38.8 percent last month, and sales of cultural and office goods jumped by 33.5 percent, according to the NBS.

    “In April, the combined retail sales of consumer goods related to trade-ins, including household appliances and audio-visual equipment, cultural and office supplies, furniture, communication equipment, and building and decoration materials, contributed to a 1.4 percentage point increase in the total retail sales of consumer goods,” Fu said.

    In April, the added value of the high-tech manufacturing industry increased by 10 percent year on year, surpassing the overall industrial growth rate by 3.9 percentage points.

    China’s shift toward intelligent and green development is gaining momentum, said Fu. In April, the added value of the intelligent unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturing sector surged by 74.2 percent, while the production of new energy vehicles rose by 38.9 percent.

    “Breakthroughs in advanced technology fields such as large AI models and humanoid robots will further promote industrial upgrading and development,” Fu said.

    Bolstered by multiple favorable factors, China’s economy is expected to maintain stable performance and steady growth momentum, said the spokesperson.

    He added that the significant reduction of bilateral tariffs between China and the United States is beneficial for trade growth between the two countries and global economic recovery.

    However, the current international environment remains complex and challenging, with a rise in unilateralism and protectionism posing serious challenges to the international economic and trade order and hindering global economic growth, Fu noted.

    “But the trend of international cooperation for win-win outcomes will not change, and China’s commitment to expanding its opening up will remain steadfast,” he said.

    The country’s efforts to diversify its foreign trade are progressing steadily, with policies aimed at promoting foreign trade development delivering continuous results, Fu said, adding that these measures are expected to continue supporting the stable growth of China’s foreign trade.

  • MIL-OSI China: US stocks inch higher despite credit rating downgrade

    U.S. stocks were little changed on Monday, as markets reacted to mounting concerns over the country’s fiscal outlook following a credit rating downgrade and the advancement of a controversial tax-and-spending bill.

    The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 137.33 points, or 0.32 percent, to 42,792.07. The S&P 500 added 5.22 points, or 0.09 percent, to 5,963.6. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 4.36 points, or 0.02 percent, to 19,215.46.

    Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with health and consumer staples leading the gainers by adding 0.96 percent and 0.42 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and consumer discretionary led the laggards by losing 1.55 percent and 0.27 percent, respectively.

    Late Friday, Moody’s Ratings downgraded the U.S. credit rating, stripping its last triple-A credit rating, citing persistent fiscal deficits and rising interest costs as key factors. Those concerns intensified after the House Budget Committee approved U.S. President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending bill late Sunday. Moody’s cited “persistent, large fiscal deficits” for its downgrade.

    “We do not believe that material multi-year reductions in mandatory spending and deficits will result from current fiscal proposals under consideration,” the agency wrote, referring to the tax and spending bill making its way through Congress. U.S. financial health is likely to deteriorate as the government’s debt and interest burden increase.

    Experts seem not to worry about the long-term sustainability of U.S. finances. “There are no signs of any serious deficit restraint at this stage,” noted Jim Reid, a strategist at Deutsche Bank.

    “The Moody’s downgrade of U.S. debt doesn’t tell investors anything they don’t already know about the U.S.’s fiscal woes,” wrote Bank of America analysts in a note on Monday.

    However, the downgrade and fiscal developments contributed to volatility in the bond market. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly climbed to 4.56 percent, its highest level in over a month, before pulling back to 4.45 percent as of 4:10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

    Trump added to the tensions over the weekend by criticizing Walmart for signaling price increases tied to tariffs. Walmart slumped 0.12 percent on Monday.

    The Federal Reserve, which has held interest rates steady this year, remains cautious due to the uncertainty surrounding tariffs and fiscal policy. New York Fed President John Williams noted Monday that the economic outlook remains murky and that monetary policy direction may not become clearer for months.

    Tech stocks, which have driven much of the recent market rally, traded mixed on Monday. Tesla dropped 2.25 percent after a 17 percent gain last week, while Apple lost about 1.17 percent. Nvidia also slipped, while Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Broadcom posted some gains.

    China’s commerce ministry on Monday condemned the United States for abusing export control measures targeting Chinese chip products, urging the country to immediately correct its wrongdoings and cease discriminatory measures against China.

    Commenting on a revised U.S. announcement concerning Chinese chip products, the spokesperson said that the announcement in essence still contains discriminatory measures and will distort the market.

    The United States has abused its export control measures and imposed stricter restrictions on Chinese chip products based on unfounded allegations, the spokesperson said, adding that China firmly opposes such unilateral bullying.

    The U.S. actions have seriously infringed upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, threatened the security and stability of global semiconductor industrial and supply chains, and disrupted global technological innovation, the spokesperson noted.

    The spokesperson urged the U.S. side to work with China to jointly safeguard the consensus reached in the high-level talks in Geneva, and promote the building of sustainable, long-term and mutually beneficial bilateral economic and trade relations.

    If the United States continues to cause China substantive harm, China will take resolute measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, the spokesperson said.

  • MIL-OSI China: Wang shrugs off racket problem to advance with Sun

    Wang Chuqin changed his racket after his “weapon” was allegedly mishandled and went on to win a mixed doubles second round game with Sun Yingsha at the world table tennis championships on Monday.

    Minutes before the Chinese duo took on the Brazilian team of Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi, Wang found part of rubber came off the blade and Chinese coach Xiao Zhan questioned the umpire if anyone had mishandled Wang’s racket. The umpire answered that no one had intentionally torn the rubber and allowed Wang to use his backup racket.

    Wang complained in a Migu TV interview that something bad always happened to him in major international events including the Paris Olympics. But he didn’t elaborate.

    Photographers, rushing to capture the moment after Wang and Sun won Olympic gold in Paris, accidentally broke Wang’s racket, a crucial piece of equipment needed for his singles match the following night – leaving him in disbelief and needing to be calmed by his coach.

    Monday’s game went well as the Olympic gold medalists and two-time defending world champions for the event cruised over World Cup holder Calderano and his girlfriend 11-2, 11-7, 11-4.

    The Chinese team asked for video replay and successfully challenged an edge call which went in the Brazilians’ favor at the beginning of the second set.

    “Our teamwork is getting better,” said Sun, who had not paired up with Wang in a few months leading to the Doha championships.

  • MIL-OSI China: Zhang regains all-around title at National Gymnastics Championships

    Zhang Boheng regained men’s all-around title with 82.965 points at the National Gymnastics Championships on Monday, but he was not that happy as his fans expected.

    Zhang had won two straight men’s individual titles since 2022 before Shi Cong upset him at last year’s National Gymnastics Championships.

    Both athletes lacked luck this year. Shi broke his rib and was diagnosed pneumothorax less than three months before the tournament. Zhang injured his neck in rings training just one day before the departure, so he can hardly bend his head on the field.

    “I thought I would not be able to compete here back then. So even now I’m still fifty percent away from my top form, and I’m very satisfied with myself,” said Shi, who fell from the horizontal bar in the last round but still secured the silver medal at 79.765 points.

    Zhang also stumbled off the pommel horse, but the gold medal came easily as he was the only gymnast who scored over eighty points in the final.

    “Winning the gold makes me happy but I think more work is needed to be done for the Chinese men’s gymnasts,” said Zhang after the match.

    The NHK Cup in Japan took place almost simultaneously with the National Gymnastics Championships. Notably, nearly 20 Japanese male all-around gymnasts surpassed the 80-point mark under the new 2025-2028 Code of Points.

    “Compared with competitors like Japan, I think we should all improve our understanding of the new rules,” said Zhang.

    Lan Xingyu settled for the bronze medal at 79.632 points.

  • MIL-OSI China: Ajax’s Farioli steps down after record title collapse

    Coach Francesco Farioli has decided to leave Ajax after only one season, the Amsterdam-based club announced on Monday, one day after the last match of the season.

    Farioli joined Ajax from OGC Nice one year ago. The 36-year-old Italian signed a contract until mid-2027 last year, after a disappointing season for Ajax with a historic last place in the Eredivisie in October 2023 under coach Maurice Steijn and a final fifth place under Steijn’s successor John van’t Schip.

    Under guidance of Farioli, Ajax arose to the top of table in the Dutch top flight with a nine-point lead over PSV with five match rounds remaining. However, Ajax collapsed in the final phase of the season and eventually reigning champion PSV finished first again last Sunday, one point ahead of Ajax. Farioli was in tears on Sunday after the last match against FC Twente (2-0 win).

    “The management and I have the same goals for the future of Ajax, but we have different visions and timeframes about the way we should work and operate to achieve those goals,” Farioli explained his departure. “Given these differences in the principles and foundations of the project, I feel deep in my heart that this is the best moment to part ways.”

    Despite the good results, Ajax and Farioli received criticism over the season for the defensive and unattractive style of play, not in line with the traditional attacking style of the Dutch giant. A different vision on the playing style between coach and the board could be one of the main reasons for his departure.

    “I find this incredibly disappointing,” technical director Alex Kroes commented in a press release. “Francesco and his staff have been a great help to us. It’s been an intense season filled with many memorable moments, and we achieved our goal: qualifying for next season’s Champions League.”

    A man has been arrested in relation to an assault in Hawke’s Bay last month in which cyclists competing in a race were pelted with glass bottles.

    On the afternoon of Saturday 19 April, the occupants of a black ute were seen on Mutiny Road, Poukawa throwing bottles from their vehicle towards participants of a Council-sanctioned cycle race.

    A young person was hit by a bottle and fell from their bike – fortunately they were not seriously injured.

    Hastings Police would like to thank the public for their response to our appeal for information at the time, as this has helped bring this matter to a resolution.

    An 18-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, and is due to appear in Hastings District Court on Friday 23 May.

    He was a passenger in the black ute at the time. This vehicle has been seized by Police, and Police are following lines of inquiry to speak with the driver.

    We would like to take this opportunity to remind road users that cyclists are legal road users under the Land Transport Act, who will on occasion ride two abreast, particularly in organised ride or race situations.

    Please be patient and overtake when safe to do so for all parties, ensuring everyone arrives at their destination safely – preserving Hawke’s Bay’s reputation as a proud cycling region.

    Disability and activity limitation statistics provide important insights about disabled people living in New Zealand. These statistics and insights are used by government agencies, service providers, and community groups to monitor the outcomes of disabled people compared with non-disabled people and to support the development of accessible services.

    Activity limitations are measured in the census using the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning (WGSS). The WGSS asks about six basic activities that a person might have difficulty with: seeing, hearing, walking or climbing stairs, remembering or concentrating, washing all over or dressing, and communicating. A person can have more than one activity limitation and will be counted for each limitation they give as a response.

    May 19, 2025 – Auckland, New Zealand – In a clear act of defiance against international humanitarian obligations, the occupying state has permitted only nine aid trucks to enter the Gaza Strip — covering both the devastated north and south. This paltry number of trucks represents a deliberate and cynical attempt to circumvent global decisions calling for unrestricted humanitarian access.

    Under the guise of permitting aid, this token gesture is being used to claim compliance while continuing to suffocate more than two million Palestinians trapped under siege. It is a tactic designed to deflect international criticism and ease diplomatic pressure without meaningfully alleviating the catastrophic conditions faced by civilians.

    This is not aid — it is manipulation. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza demands immediate, full, and unhindered access to food, water, medical supplies, and shelter for all areas of the Strip. The international community must see through these performative measures and act decisively.

    We call on governments, humanitarian agencies, and civil society around the world to intensify public and political pressure on the occupying state. It is imperative that world leaders hold it accountable for its ongoing violations and demand an end to the blockade, the siege, and these deceptive, life-threatening tactics.

    Every minute of delay costs lives. Nine trucks are not enough. Gaza needs justice, not crumbs.

    The General Practice Owners Association is welcoming a $41 million a year uplift in funding for urgent and after-hours care services and hopes the government’s newly proactive approach to supporting family doctors continues in Thursday’s Budget.

    “The after-hours and urgent care system is under considerable stress – about 10 urgent care services closed in the last two years – so it’s encouraging the government is funding improvement to urgent and after-hours care, but the devil is in the detail,” said Dr Angus Chambers, Chair of GenPro.

    In particular more detail is required on rural services, which are under considerable stress, and on the split in funds for five new regional services, the expansion of others, and support for those already operating.

    “This $164 million injection over four years and other recent announcements by senior ministers show the government is serious about tackling the crisis in primary health care.
     
    “Looking forward, the best thing the Budget could contain is a 10 percent uplift in the government’s contribution to general practice, which covers approximately half a patient’s consultation fee.

    “The government’s contribution has gradually fallen over the past 20 years, a period when an aging population, changing health needs, rising costs, and stretched hospitals have piled more work and cost on family doctors.

    “The result is that many general practices have closed or reduced their services, GP salaries have failed to keep pace with overseas, and recruitment hasn’t kept up with GPs leaving or retiring. We expect considerable upward pressure on patient fees unless there is a substantial funding boost in the Budget.

    “The government currently puts $1.3 billion or just 4 percent of its $30 billion health budget toward general practice.  A 10 percent uplift is urgently required in 2025/26 just to catch up and maintain existing services, with more investment needed in later years.

    “General practice would also like the Budget to include progress on a new method for funding general practice to replace the current flawed ‘capitation’ model.

    “A new model has been worked on for years by successive governments. But we’re still waiting for an outcome. The need is urgent as the old model hasn’t kept pace with the needs of patients and is resulting in longer waiting times to see a family doctor,” Dr Chambers said.

    WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined House and Senate colleagues in sending a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urging them to investigate which big corporations are using the Trump tariffs as an excuse to raise prices in excess of actual cost increases caused by the President’s tariffs, and to prosecute individuals and companies that price gouge American consumers.
    “President Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs build an especially fertile environment for price-gouging. The new tariffs have created a cloud of uncertainty that gives companies cover to raise prices on all goods, regardless of whether they are subject to new tariffs or whether their costs have meaningfully increased, above and beyond what is necessary to cover any cost increases,” the members wrote.  
    “Armed with the knowledge that the FTC has turned a blind eye to this price-gouging tactic, companies now have free rein to use surveillance pricing to price gouge consumers. A former FTC official said, ‘The message that is coming out of this administration…is that the watchdog is gone and companies feel emboldened to rip people off.’ We urge you to fulfill your public commitment and to ensure President Trump’s trade war is not a ‘green light’ for price gouging,” concluded the members.

    Senator Rosen is working to lower costs and protect American consumers. Earlier this year, she sent a letter to the FTC expressing concern over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by corporations to target individuals with different prices for the same products through surveillance pricing. Senator Rosen was also part of a letter pressing the Trump Administration on how mass firings at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will hurt Nevada families. She has also introduced legislation to crack down on price gouging by corporate investors who are driving up housing prices. Last Congress, Senator Rosen successfully pushed the FTC to block the Kroger-Albertsons grocery store mega merger because it could reduce competition and raise grocery prices.

    “Venezuelans still face dire and unimaginable conditions as a result of the Maduro regime’s brutality and oppression,” said Senator Rosen. “TPS has allowed law-abiding Venezuelans to escape political violence and economic collapse, and legally live in the United States and contribute to our economy.     Senator Rosen has been clear in her support for securing the border and making sure the asylum process is humane and orderly. Earlier this year, she condemned the Trump Administration’s decision to revoke a previously authorized TPS extension for Venezuelans and released a statement condemning President Trump’s unconstitutional attempt to end birthright citizenship.     Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the co-chairs of the Senate Diabetes Caucus, introduced the Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act. This bipartisan legislation would improve care for patients with diabetes by allowing nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates/physician assistants (PAs) – who often act as sole primary care providers for many patients with diabetes – to prescribe therapeutic shoes.
    Diabetes can often lead to health complications, such as foot ulcers and calluses, and can even necessitate the amputation of toes, legs, and feet. In addition to managing the disease through physical activity, diet, and medication, diabetic patients often benefit from the use of therapeutic shoes, which are an important preventive measure to mitigate these complications.
    “Therapeutic shoes are a proven method for preventing costly and painful complications related to diabetes, yet current Medicare regulations force patients to endure a time-consuming process to obtain them,” said Senator Collins. “Our bipartisan legislation would allow nurse practitioners and physician assistants to certify their patients’ need for this important treatment method, saving patients time and allowing them to keep their current medical provider.”
    “Ensuring patients with diabetes can access the full range of treatments in a timely manner is critical to helping them manage their diabetes and prevent medical emergencies,” said Senator Shaheen. “Therapeutic shoes can help put a stop to a number of complications caused by diabetes — so it’s only commonsense to clear the way for nurse practitioners and physician assistants to prescribe these life-changing shoes for their patients.”

The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) extends our gratitude to Senators Susan Collins and Jeanne Shaheen for their commitment to the health and well-being of those served by the Medicare program through the introduction of the Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act. This bill would correct an undue barrier to care for Medicare beneficiaries by authorizing physician associates/assistants (PAs) to order diabetic shoes for their patients.     While NPs and PAs often act as sole primary care providers for patients with diabetes – particularly those in underserved and rural communities – current law requires that they send their diabetic patients on Medicare who need therapeutic shoes to a physician who will certify that they do in fact need these shoes. The physician is then required to become the provider managing the patient’s diabetic condition moving forward. Not only does the current law impose additional costs on the Medicare program by requiring the participation of an additional provider, it can also result in delays for patients in underserved and rural areas which could jeopardize their overall health. This bill would authorize NPs and PAs to certify a Medicare beneficiary’s need for therapeutic shoes, improving timeliness and access to care while reducing costs.
    The Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act is endorsed by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Physician Associates.
