    The exhibition “Qi Baishi: Inspiration in Ink” opened on May 3 at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, United States. Jointly launched by MFA Boston, Beijing Fine Art Academy and the China Exhibition Agency, the exhibition showcases a selection of works by the renowned Chinese painter Qi Baishi (1864-1957), offering international viewers an in-depth exploration of his masterful ink paintings and artistic legacy.

    At the opening ceremony, Chen Li, Chinese consul general in New York, emphasized Boston’s historical role as a pioneer in Sino-American cultural exchange. “The first cultural exchange project after the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. was the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s performance in China. The first American museum to hold an exhibition in China was the MFA,” he said. “This exhibition is more than an artistic exchange – it’s a bridge between hearts and a celebration of the shared values of Eastern and Western civilizations.”

    MFA Director Matthew Teitelbaum reflected on the museum’s longstanding connection with China, dating back to their first collaboration in 1981. “Qi Baishi’s works not only represent the excellence of Chinese art, but they also transcend cultural boundaries,” he said. “This exhibition offers our audience the opportunity to experience the beauty and wisdom of Eastern artistic traditions.”

    Mara Dolan, a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council, praised the exhibition’s contribution to cultural understanding. “Qi Baishi’s paintings arriving in Boston is a remarkable opportunity for our community to engage deeply with traditional Chinese culture and artistic philosophy,” she said. “This helps foster deeper mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples.”

    BFAA Director Wu Hongliang shared his hopes for the exhibition. “We’ve carefully selected some of Qi Baishi’s most representative works,” he said. “Through these, we hope our friends in Boston will feel the vitality and creativity of traditional Chinese art.”

    As a symbol of continued friendship and collaboration, Li Tiantian from China Exhibition Agency presented Teitelbaum with a commemorative catalog of the American paintings from the MFA exhibited in China in 1981. In return, Teitelbaum gifted a catalog of the MFA’s Chinese art collection. Both parties expressed their hope for future collaborations that are more diverse and in-depth.

    After the introductory words from the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency Mr. Georges Poulides, Ambassador of Cyprus to the Holy See, the Pope delivered the following address:

    Your Eminence,
    Your Excellencies,
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
    Peace be with you!
    I thank His Excellency Mr George Poulides, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, for his cordial greeting in your name, and for the tireless work that he has carried out with his characteristic energy, commitment and kindness. These qualities have earned him the esteem of all my predecessors whom he has met in these years of his mission to the Holy See, particularly the late Pope Francis.
    I would also like to express my gratitude for your many messages of good wishes following my election, as well as those expressing condolence for the death of Pope Francis. Some of those messages also came from countries with which the Holy See does not have diplomatic relations, a significant sign of esteem that indicates a strengthening of mutual relations.
    In our dialogue, I would like us always to preserve the sense of being a family. Indeed, the diplomatic community represents the entire family of peoples, a family that shares the joys and sorrows of life and the human and spiritual values that give it meaning and direction. Papal diplomacy is an expression of the very catholicity of the Church. In its diplomatic activity, the Holy See is inspired by a pastoral outreach that leads it not to seek privileges but to strengthen its evangelical mission at the service of humanity. Resisting all forms of indifference, it appeals to consciences, as witnessed by the constant efforts of my venerable predecessor, ever attentive to the cry of the poor, the needy and the marginalized, as well as to contemporary challenges, ranging from the protection of creation to artificial intelligence.
    In addition to being a visible sign of your countries’ respect for the Apostolic See, your presence here today is a gift for me. It allows me to renew the Church’s aspiration — and my own — to reach out and embrace all individuals and peoples on the Earth, who need and yearn for truth, justice and peace! In a certain sense, my own life experience, which has spanned North America, South America and Europe, has been marked by this aspiration to transcend borders in order to encounter different peoples and cultures.
    Through the constant and patient work of the Secretariat of State, I intend to strengthen understanding and dialogue with you and with your countries, many of which I have already had the grace to visit, especially during my time as Prior General of the Augustinians. I trust that God’s providence will allow me further occasions to get to know the countries from which you come and enable me to have occasions to confirm in the faith our many brothers and sisters throughout the world and to build new bridges with all people of good will.
    In our dialogue, I would like us to keep in mind three essential words that represent the pillars of the Church’s missionary activity and the aim of the Holy See’s diplomacy.
    The first word ispeace. All too often we consider it a “negative” word, indicative only of the absence of war and conflict, since opposition is a perennial part of human nature, frequently leading us to live in a constant “state of conflict” at home, at work and in society. Peace then appears simply as a respite, a pause between one dispute and another, given that, no matter how hard we try, tensions will always be present, a little like embers burning beneath the ashes, ready to ignite at any moment.
    From a Christian perspective – but also in other religious traditions – peace is first and foremost a gift. It is the first gift of Christ: “My peace I give to you” (Jn14:27).Yet it is an active and demanding gift. It engages and challenges each of us, regardless of our cultural background or religious affiliation, demanding first of all that we work on ourselves. Peace is built in the heart and from the heart, by eliminating pride and vindictiveness and carefully choosing our words. For words too, not only weapons, can wound and even kill.
    In this regard, I believe that religions and interreligious dialogue can make a fundamental contribution to fostering a climate of peace. This naturally requires full respect for religious freedom in every country, since religious experience is an essential dimension of the human person. Without it, it is difficult, if not impossible, to bring about the purification of the heart necessary for building peaceful relationships.
    This effort, in which all of us are called to take part, can begin to eliminate the root causes of all conflicts and every destructive urge for conquest. It demands a genuine willingness to engage in dialogue, inspired by the desire to communicate rather than clash. As a result, there is a need to give new life to multilateral diplomacy and to those international institutions conceived and designed primarily to remedy eventual disputes within the international community. Naturally, there must also be a resolve to halt the production of instruments of destruction and death, since, as Pope Francis noted in his lastUrbi et OrbiMessage: No peace is “possible without true disarmament [and] the requirement that every people provide for its own defence must not turn into a race to rearmament.”[1]
    The second word isjustice. Working for peace requires acting justly. As I have already mentioned, I chose my name thinking first of all of Leo XIII, the Pope of the first great social Encyclical,Rerum Novarum. In this time of epochal change, the Holy See cannot fail to make its voice heard in the face of the many imbalances and injustices that lead, not least, to unworthy working conditions and increasingly fragmented and conflict-ridden societies. Every effort should be made to overcome the global inequalities – between opulence and destitution – that are carving deep divides between continents, countries and even within individual societies.
    It is the responsibility of government leaders to work to build harmonious and peaceful civil societies. This can be achieved above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman, “a small but genuine society, and prior to all civil society.”[2]In addition, no one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike.
    My own story is that of a citizen, the descendant of immigrants, who in turn chose to emigrate. All of us, in the course of our lives, can find ourselves healthy or sick, employed or unemployed, living in our native land or in a foreign country, yet our dignity always remains unchanged: it is the dignity of a creature willed and loved by God.
    The third word istruth. Truly peaceful relationships cannot be built, also within the international community, apart from truth. Where words take on ambiguous and ambivalent connotations, and the virtual world, with its altered perception of reality, takes over unchecked, it is difficult to build authentic relationships, since the objective and real premises of communication are lacking.
    For her part, the Church can never be exempted from speaking the truth about humanity and the world, resorting whenever necessary to blunt language that may initially create misunderstanding. Yet truth can never be separated from charity, which always has at its root a concern for the life and well-being of every man and woman. Furthermore, from the Christian perspective, truth is not the affirmation of abstract and disembodied principles, but an encounter with the person of Christ himself, alive in the midst of the community of believers. Truth, then, does not create division, but rather enables us to confront all the more resolutely the challenges of our time, such as migration, the ethical use of artificial intelligence and the protection of our beloved planet Earth. These are challenges that require commitment and cooperation on the part of all, since no one can think of facing them alone.
    Dear Ambassadors,
    My ministry has begun in the heart of a Jubilee Year, devoted in a particular way to hope. It is a time of conversion and renewal and, above all, an opportunity to leave conflicts behind and embark on a new path, confident that, by working together, each of us in accordance with his or her own sensibilities and responsibilities, can build a world in which everyone can lead an authentically human life in truth, justice and peace. It is my hope that this will be the case everywhere, starting with those places that suffer most grievously, like Ukraine and the Holy Land.
    I thank you for all the work you are doing to build bridges between your countries and the Holy See, and I cordially impart my blessing to you, your families and your peoples. Thank you! Thank you for all the work that you do!

  • Youth-centric ‘Yoga Unplugged’ gains momentum ahead of International Day of Yoga 2025

    As preparations intensify for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), the Ministry of Ayush’s youth-focused initiative “Yoga Unplugged” is gaining momentum, with leading yoga institutions lending their support to inspire young minds across the country.
     
    One of the prominent contributors to the initiative is Kaivalyadhama, one of the world’s oldest and most respected yoga institutes. In a significant endorsement of “Yoga Unplugged,” the institute has launched a series of youth-oriented programmes, including the “Yoga for Young Minds” campaign. Through this campaign, students and youth changemakers are being offered free access to the Common Yoga Protocol training via Kaivalyadhama’s online platform, enabling widespread participation regardless of location.
     
    In addition, Kaivalyadhama will take part in the upcoming global virtual summit, Yoga Connect, with its digital offering “Yoginar,” further expanding the reach of authentic yoga teachings among the youth.
     
    Established in 1924 by Swami Kuvalayananda, Kaivalyadhama is known for preserving the pure and scientific tradition of yoga, as articulated in the Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali. Its active participation in “Yoga Unplugged” adds a deep-rooted credibility to the movement aimed at making yoga relevant to modern youth.
     
    Designed to connect with young audiences through interactive and engaging formats, “Yoga Unplugged” is expected to be a standout feature of this year’s IDY celebrations. With more institutions expected to join the initiative in the coming weeks, the campaign is set to mobilize youth participation on an unprecedented scale.
     
    Meanwhile, the Ministry of Ayush has announced ten signature events that will mark this year’s celebrations. These include Yoga Sangam — a synchronized yoga demonstration at one lakh locations, Yoga Bandhan — promoting international exchange programmes, and Harit Yoga — a sustainability initiative combining yoga with environmental action.
     
    Other major events include Yoga Samavesh, Yoga MahaKumbh, and Samyoga, each focusing on inclusion, large-scale participation, and integration of yoga into modern healthcare systems. Yoga Connect will serve as a global platform for discussions with leading experts, while Yoga Prabhav will examine yoga’s long-term impact on public health.
     
    The Ministry has called upon individuals, organizations, and communities across India and the world to be part of this collective journey towards well-being. Citizens are encouraged to participate in events or host their own yoga demonstrations by registering on the official portal — yoga.ayush.gov.in/yoga-sangam.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday extended condolences to Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi over the death of former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica.

    In his message, Xi expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Chinese government and people, and extended sincere sympathies to Mujica’s family and the people of Uruguay.

    As a renowned leader of Uruguay, Mujica dedicated his entire life to the well-being of the Uruguayan people and was deeply loved by them, enjoying a high reputation in the international community, Xi said in the message.

    Mujica had long been committed to the development of China-Uruguay relations and made positive contributions to the cause of friendship between China and Uruguay, Xi said, adding that the Chinese people have lost an old and good friend.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Three charged with National Security Act offences

    A Counter Terrorism Policing investigation has resulted in three men being charged with offences under the National Security Act.

    The three men, who are all Iranian nationals, were arrested and detained on Saturday, 3 May, under Section 27 of the National Security Act (NSA), 2023. Warrants of further detention were obtained meaning the three men could be detained until Saturday, 17 May.

    The investigation is being led by officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and on Friday, 16 May, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges against the three men:

    Mostafa Sepahvand, 39 (22.9.85) of St John’s Wood, London
    Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44 (22.9.80) of Kensal Rise, London
    Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55 (23.9.69), of Ealing, London

    All three were charged with engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service between 14 August 2024 and 16 February 2025, contrary to Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023.

    Sepahvand was also charged with engaging in conduct, namely surveillance, reconnaissance and open-source research, between 14 August 2024 and 16 February 2025, intending to commit acts, namely serious violence against a person in the United Kingdom, contrary to Section 18(1)(a) of the National Security Act 2023.

    Manesh and Noori have also been charged with engaging in conduct, namely surveillance and reconnaissance, with the intention that acts, namely serious violence against a person in the United Kingdom, would be committed by others, contrary to section 18(1)(b) of the National Security Act 2023.

    The foreign state to which the charges relate is Iran.

    Commander Dominic Murphy, from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “These are extremely serious charges under the National Security Act, which have come about following what has been a very complex and fast-moving investigation.

    “Since the men were arrested two weeks ago, detectives have been working around the clock and we have worked closely with colleagues in the CPS to reach this point. We have been in contact with the individuals directly affected, and we continue to provide them with support.

    “Now that these men have been charged I would urge people not to speculate about this case, so that the criminal justice process can run its course.”

    The three men have been remanded in custody and are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 17 May.

    On Friday, 9 May, a fourth man, aged 31, was also arrested as part of the investigation and he was detained under Section 27 of the National Security Act 2023. A warrant of further detention was obtained, meaning he could be detained until Friday, 16 May. He was released without charge on Thursday, 15 May.

    SEOUL, May 17 (Xinhua) — Former South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol on Saturday announced his withdrawal from the ruling conservative Citizens’ Power Party ahead of the June 3 presidential election.

    “Today I am leaving the Civil Power party. I bow to my comrades who believed in me and stayed with me for a long time,” he said in an online statement.

    Yun Seok-yul said he believes his resignation from the party is the best way to ensure the victory of its candidate in the early presidential election and protect liberal democracy in the country.

    There have been recent calls for Yun Seok-yul to leave the Civil Force in order to attract undecided voters in the upcoming elections. The ruling party’s ratings have fallen following the former president’s declaration of martial law, his subsequent impeachment and eventual removal from office.

    Yun Seok-yeol called on the public to join forces with Kim Moon-soo, the presidential candidate of the Civil Power Party, and vote in the June 3 election to protect freedom, sovereignty and prosperity. –0–

    In a firm reiteration of its zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism, India is set to send seven All-Party Delegations to key partner countries later this month. These visits come in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and reflect India’s ongoing efforts to combat cross-border terrorism.
     
    The delegations will engage with counterparts in several nations, including member states of the United Nations Security Council, to underscore India’s united stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The move is aimed at strengthening international cooperation while conveying India’s clear message: terrorism will not be tolerated under any circumstance.
     
    Each delegation will include Members of Parliament from across political parties, senior political leaders, and experienced diplomats. The initiative reflects a rare show of political unity, with leaders from various ideological backgrounds joining hands on a critical national issue.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Six Polytechnic and ITE Students Awarded Environmental Services Scholarships

    Singapore, 17 May 2025 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) has awarded scholarships to six students under the NEA-Industry Scholarship Programme for the Environmental Services (ES) industry. At a ceremony today, Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, emphasised the industry’s indispensable role in providing essential environmental and public hygiene services to the nation. Introduced in 2020, the NEA-Industry Scholarship programme forms part of ongoing industry transformation efforts to attract talent, create quality jobs, and improve job prospects in the ES Industry.

    Fourth cycle of NEA-Industry Scholarship

    2          Since 2020, the programme has awarded 26 scholarships. NEA received 60 applications in this fourth cycle and through a rigorous selection process, six[1] deserving individuals received scholarships. They will take on job roles such as Data Analysts, Environmental Services Specialists, Field Application Engineers, IT Solution Coordinators, and Robotics Research Analysts with sponsoring organisations Chye Thiam Maintenance Pte Ltd, Hong Ye Group Pte Ltd, Metabots Pte Ltd, and LS 2 Services Pte Ltd upon graduation.

    3            Amongst the recipients is 18-year-old Ms Ng Jing Yi Kellyn, a Year 2 student at ITE College Central who is currently pursuing a Higher Nitec in Mechatronics Engineering. Kellyn recognises that the work in cleaning, pest management and waste management is crucial in ensuring a clean, and safe environment. Matters relating to landfill utilisation are particularly concerning to her, and she understands that every action counts towards reducing the amount of waste that is generated. Kellyn will be joining Hong Ye Group Pte Ltd, a company which offers tailored cleaning and facility management services, as an IT Solutions Coordinator. She looks forward to making an impact on the environment and public health and is excited to learn the ropes to optimise IT infrastructure and ensure smooth operations during her career.

    4            Another scholar is 20-year-old Ms Chan Xi Cecilia, a Year 3 student studying Big Data and Analytics at Temasek Polytechnic, who believes in the transformative power of data in enabling better business decisions. Cecilia is looking forward to contributing to the ES industry as a Robotic Research Analyst with Metabots Pte Ltd, where she will analyse large volumes of data generated by the company’s cleaning robots to enhance robot performance. She will also conduct research to improve robotics through data analysis, machine learning, and new algorithm development. She hopes to apply her knowledge in data analytics which will help front line workers perform their jobs with greater ease.

    5            The NEA-Industry Scholarship programme continues to receive strong industry support from industry partners. LS 2 Services Pte Ltd, a home-grown company offering integrated environmental services and returning sponsoring organisation, has hired four scholars across three cycles of the programme. LS 2’s scholars are from Temasek Polytechnic, which is home to Singapore’s pioneering Enviro Tech Innovation Hub (ETIH@TP). This development pathway prepares them to drive the future of ES.

    • A true environmental champion, Kellyn regularly encourages her community to recycle right by washing single use plastic cups and bottles before disposing this into the recycling bin. She had previously participated in a school-based plastics recycling drive and in existing initiatives to repurpose plastic bottles, to reduce single-use plastic consumption and promote sustainable alternatives.   
    • Kellyn has a strong passion to help the elderly workers in the cleaning sector and recognises that their work is physically taxing. She feels that technology would play a key role to streamline their workflows, and to direct their efforts to high human traffic spaces that may require the most attention. She believes that technology would play a key role in making their work easier.

    It is a tragic truth that violence and discrimination continue to be a part of everyday life for millions of LGBTIQ+ people around the world. They face an onslaught of hate speech, attacks, and restrictions on their rights.  Meanwhile, funding cuts for critical health services and civil society organizations threaten further devastating impacts.

    The theme of this year’s international day – “the power of communities” – reminds us that we are strongest together. LGBTIQ+ people, and those working with them to secure their rights, have proved time and again the value of communities in providing support and driving change. 

    Their example should inspire us all to come together and realize the vision of a world where every member of our human family can live a life of freedom, equality, and dignity. Working as one, we must push to repeal discriminatory laws, combat violence and harmful practices, and end the scapegoating of marginalized communities.
     
    The United Nations is a proud partner in these efforts. We will not rest until the rights of all are a reality, no matter who they are or whom they love.

    This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day marks the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union.

    From the telegraph to radio, from the Internet to Artificial Intelligence, technology has transformed how we live, work, and connect.  But its benefits remain deeply unequal.  This year’s focus on gender equality in digital transformation is both timely and urgent.

    Around the world, algorithmic bias is reinforcing old prejudices.  Online harassment and abuse silences women’s voices and drives them offline.  And women and girls remain severely underrepresented in the very fields shaping our future: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

    This injustice harms us all.  We cannot accept a digital future that leaves half of humanity behind. We must urgently invest in digital skills for all; harness the potential of technology to improve women’s lives; dismantle barriers blocking their full participation and leadership in the technology sector; and keep working to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms – online and offline.

    The Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact offer a path to bridge all digital divides and strengthen collaboration for women’s rights online.  Let’s take that path together and help ensure digital transformation is a force for progress, inclusion, and equality.

    Police are investigating an attempted arson at the Rosebery/Toorak Football Clubrooms in Rosebery overnight.Tasmania Fire Service and emergency services were called to the scene in Primrose St about 2.45am, after a neighbour heard a window being smashed.Quick action by the neighbour with a small fire extinguisher saw the fire extinguished prior to the brigades’ arrival.Damage to the building was minimal, with some scorching and a broken window.TFS investigations today determined the fire had been deliberately lit, and it is believed some object with an accelerant was thrown through the window.Police are seeking any information from the public, including any details around a small dark coloured hatchback that was seen leaving the area immediately after.Anyone with information should contact Police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or crimestopperstas.com.au, quoting reference number 775130.

    WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), and Congressman John Rutherford (R-Fla.) to discuss the progress House Committees are making on reconciliation in order to pass President Trump’s agenda of energy independence, border security, lower taxes, reduced government spending, and protection for America’s most vulnerable. As the House celebrates Police Week with legislation on the floor, Leader Scalise also highlighted a brave Capitol Police Officer in his life, David Bailey, who took a bullet to save the lives of Members of Congress during the Congressional Baseball Game shooting in 2017.

    On the heroism of our law enforcement:“Well, I’m proud to join my colleagues in celebrating National Law Enforcement Week, bringing a number of bills to the floor to give better protections to our men and women in law enforcement, and just continue to remind those brave heroes that we have their back, like Sheriff Rutherford and so many others in law enforcement, they now serve in Congress. Pete Stauber, who was a cop on the beat, I room with. You know the kind of heroes that they are, and we hear about heroes a lot. “You sometimes hear stories about heroes in law enforcement. I get to walk with one of those heroes every day. I’m going to embarrass him, and he’s going to be upset with me, but he happens to be with me this morning. That’s David Bailey. You want to meet a real-life American hero. It’s that man right there. I wouldn’t be here today, and probably about a dozen other Members of Congress wouldn’t be here today, if not for his bravery, that I got to experience firsthand. I didn’t get to see it all, but I heard it all. Over 100 rounds of gunfire. When a gunman came out on a ball field and tried to kill all of us, and the only reason we’re alive today is because he put himself between us and the gunfire, risked his life, got hit during the shootout. The only reason we’re alive and [the gunman is] not is because of the bravery of David Bailey and Crystal Griner. “While we hear about heroes every now and then, when you actually get to see one and walk around with one, and he came back to work when he got out of the hospital for his treatment, he wanted to go back to work because he loves what he does. He cares about his training. It’s not talked about a lot because many men and women in law enforcement might never have to use their revolver. Hopefully, they don’t, and they don’t want to. But they go to training every day in case they have to, so they’re ready to risk their lives to protect us and our communities. And that’s what David did. The reason that we’re all here today, including him, is because he took his training so seriously. In the days where you could have just phoned it in. He said, ‘You know what? If I’m ever called on to be ready, I want to be prepared to do the job.’ We know there’s so many brave men and women just like David, but I got to see it and experience it. I’m here because of him, and I’m always going to pay tribute to the great heroism of what law enforcement represents. I hope we all remember that. It’s not just a talking point. It’s not just stories that we hear about. I got to experience it, and a number of my colleagues would tell you the exact same thing.” On House Committees’ progress on reconciliation:“We also, of course, are moving through the reconciliation bill and finishing it up this week. This incredibly important work, we’re doing what a lot of people said couldn’t be done. We’re doing it because families are relying on us to get this done. We’ve had many meetings with President Trump, including the last one with the Speaker and the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee [Jason] Smith, Chairman of Energy and Commerce Committee [Brett] Guthrie last week in the Oval Office to finalize some of the final pieces of this bill. A lot of work has gone into getting 11 committees ready to complete all of their work today. By the end of today, think about that: 11 committees.“When we did this in 2017, which is an important bill, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, to get economic growth, to get our economy moving again, to create jobs, to put more money in the paychecks of workers. There were only two committees involved in that back in 2017. There’s 11 involved this time. Each one of them has hit their mark. And by the end of today, all of them will have exceeded the things that they were asked by us to do, and they will be delivering a great product for all Members of Congress to vote on.” On reconciliation benefitting lower and middle-income American families:“Now, we all know not all Members of Congress will vote for that bill. But everybody who casts a no vote is going to have some tough questions to answer back home. Why would you vote against tax relief for work and families? You can lie all day long, as the Whip pointed out, about the rich and the billionaires. The rich and the billionaires are always going to figure out how to get through whatever the tax code looks like. You know who can’t figure out every single component of it, especially if a tax goes up on you? It’s the lower and middle-income families of America who have been struggling. We were losing our middle class before 2017, when we finally lowered rates for those hardworking families. We saw the benefits primarily to lower and middle-income families.“They would be the ones hit the hardest if this bill were not to pass. Luckily, we’re going to come together and figure it out as we have every step of the way to get this done for the American people, because failure is not an option. We’re going to get our economy moving again. We will give President Trump the resources he needs to keep our border secure. Now that he has secured it, he needs additional tools for our border patrol agents. We’re going to make America energy independent again. It’s in this bill. We’re going to remove the threat of a debt crisis in this bill. So many other important things. We’re getting people back to work in this bill. It’s an important piece of legislation, but I want to commend all the committees, all 11 committees who have worked hours and hours tirelessly, get their work done, starting with the leadership of President Trump, making sure that every step of the way, when there were questions, when there were final decisions that had to be made, he was always one phone call away, and he’ll continue to be. This process isn’t over. We’re just getting close to maybe halftime. When we pass this bill next week through the House, it’ll go to the Senate. They’ll do their work. But we will get this bill to President Trump’s desk before the July Fourth deadline that the White House has asked for.”On the leadership of Speaker Johnson:“The reason that we’ve been able to hit all of these marks is because in every meeting, and I’ve been in all these meetings, the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has been about as patient of a man as I’ve seen, listening to our Members. Believe me, you know this, we have Members that have a lot of different points of view, have a lot of different views on how the bill should be put together. They are not ashamed to express those views, but at the end of the day, we’ve all got to come together. He has brought our Members together on every tough issue. There are a lot of tough issues. Might be one remaining to solve, but we’ve gotten through every one of them because he’s had the patience of Job and continues to lead us in the right direction for those families who are counting on us.”

    JEFFERSON, La.—Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss bringing permanency to the tax code and passing President Trump’s agenda through the reconciliation package. Leader Scalise outlined how unleashing energy production, securing the border, and cutting wasteful spending would help hardworking families. Additionally, Leader Scalise emphasized the need to strengthen social safety net programs for the people those programs are intended for: vulnerable American citizens, including disabled people, pregnant women, and Americans who have fallen on hard times.

    On stability through pro-growth tax code:“No, all the rates are going to stay the same, and that’s really good news for the economy to get stability in the tax code. And we’re looking to do it permanently, not just for another 10-year extension. There’s going to be, of course, some of the things President Trump talked about, like no tax on tips. But you’re going to see a continued pro-growth tax code and a prevention of any tax increases on anybody, which is going to bode really well, I think, for investment, economic growth, lowering inflation, lowering costs at the grocery store for families, all of the things that we want to get done.”On avoiding tax hikes:“There was a lot of pushback from our members, a lot of us that want to ensure that nobody gets a tax increase, because at the end of the day, what was so successful about what we did in 2017 with President Trump’s tax cuts is that we lowered tax rates for everybody. And by the way, not only did everybody do better, all income groups did better, but it was the lower and middle income groups that did the best when you see true economic growth and true reinvestment in America. And so why would you want to raise taxes on anybody? That’s what the Democrats do. And by the way, when you go look in these states where they go after the wealthy – hey, look at New York. They’ve got a billionaire’s tax. Well, guess who’s leaving New York? All the billionaires. And they’re moving to places like Florida and Texas, and Tennessee that have zero income tax. So same thing in California. They go after their wealthy people. They try to play class warfare. And then those people just say, ‘Okay, if you don’t like me, then I’ll leave and go somewhere where I’m liked.’”On strengthening social safety net programs for deserving Americans:“Of course, it’s getting paid for. And that’s, again, you go back and look at 2017. We took in more revenue the next year after we cut taxes than what we took in in the history of the country.“Well, that’s because of some of the other programs that are untouched. Medicare and Social Security we all know have cyclical problems. And under Biden’s own Medicare actuaries, those programs are in trouble. We need to save those programs from bankruptcy, but you can’t touch that in budget reconciliation. So, for somebody to try to blame a deficit or a debt on budget reconciliation when you can’t even have an impact on those programs, it’s disingenuous. Let’s talk about what we’re doing with this bill as it relates to the overall picture of the budget.“This bill is being paid for in a number of ways. One, you do actual savings. You get things like stopping illegals from being on some of these programs, putting work requirements into Medicaid, putting work requirements into SNAP, the food stamp program. That yields big savings for taxpayers. By the way, it’s going to get people back in the workforce. These programs are safety net programs. They’re not designed for somebody, the 35-year-old sitting in his mom’s basement playing video games, turning down work. That is not what a social safety net program is. It’s to help disabled people, pregnant women, and people in hard times. That’s what we’re going to focus these programs back on. It’s going to make the programs work better, but it will give big savings to the taxpayer.”On keeping tax rates low:“I don’t want to see that change. I don’t want to see us going after any particular group like that. But let’s let the bill come out and see where they ultimately decide. This was one of the final decisions that a lot of members went back and forth on. And look, each one of these are tough decisions. Some are easier decisions than others. Work requirements are very widely supported. Carried interest, higher top rate. There was a lot of pushback on some of those.“We’re not trying to change the tax code, meaning upper rate for you and lower rate for somebody else. We want to keep all the rates low. We want to keep the rates where they were. Then there were some additional add-ons, like no tax on tips. Those were things that the President specifically ran on.“We’re not looking to make a change there. I know, maybe you want to see their rate go up. We didn’t want to see any rates go up.”On passing President Trump’s agenda through reconciliation: “Yeah, and most of his priorities are in this bill, and he loves this bill. He loves the things that we’re doing because it’s going to get real economic growth. It’s going to help families who are struggling. By the way, opening up energy production, border security, all that’s in this bill, too. Debt ceiling, taking that off the table for two years, so you don’t have to worry about that debt crisis coming. All of those things are in the bill, too.“Yes. Those are permanent changes.“It’s one big, beautiful bill. That may be the name of it.”

I applaud Kash Patel for getting the facts out and getting the record corrected, but the FBI in 2017 falsely put out information. Look, Jim Jordan’s name was on that shooter’s hit list, too, and he had very dire intentions to kill Republicans. That’s what he said he wanted to do. That’s going to juice the economy, Larry. Getting that certainty will, too. But I think it’ll be greater than 2.6%, but we agreed to limit it for the budgeting purposes to 2.6% growth.”On the timeline of reconciliation: “So Sunday night, the Budget Committee will go back in. They’re going to meet. Look, we’re talking to those members who voted no today. We’re going to work through it. There were some questions they had for the Trump Administration. We were working on getting them some of those questions answered. Things like, when is implementation of work requirements going to happen? We’re speeding that up. Speaker Johnson and I already agreed to do that. They want to know the exact date. We have to work with Dr. Oz because ultimately, Dr. Oz has to implement it. We don’t want to jam him and make it too early. But Dr. Oz is going to do it as soon as possible. We’re going to speed that date up. “We’re going to get the bill passed. Then, ultimately, by next week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, on the House Floor, that bill will pass. One big, beautiful bill will pass the House, and then it goes to the Senate, and they get to start their process. Although we’ve been keeping Senator Thune, Senator Crapo, all the other members of their leadership informed every step of the way, so they know what’s in this bill. Hopefully, they won’t have to start over from scratch.“[It could pass the Budget Committee by] Sunday night. It goes to Rules [Committee], goes to the floor – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, somewhere in there. As fast as we can get it done. Let’s get it done. Let’s grow this economy. This legislation would require high-end chip manufacturers to implement technical security measures to detect and prevent smuggling to unauthorized countries and end users. 

    The legislation responds to ongoing reports of AI chips being smuggled into China, where they are used to power state-controlled AI projects. Despite export controls, smuggling networks and front companies continue to move U.S.-made chips into restricted countries. 

    “As Congress’ chip designer, AI programmer, and PhD physicist, I know that we have the technical tools to prevent powerful AI technology from getting into the wrong hands. With advanced AI chips being smuggled into China and posing a national security risk, Congress must act,” said Congressman Bill Foster. “I’m proud to lead the effort on this bipartisan legislation, which is an important step in protecting our exports and ensuring that U.S. technology is not used to undermine democracy and global stability.”

    ·         Location Verification: High-end AI chips must have the ability to identify their location before they are exported. 

    ·         Mandatory Reporting: Companies exporting these products must report any credible information about the diversion of the product, including if the location has changed. 

    ·         Additional Technical Requirements: Requires the Secretary of Commerce to assess second-level security mechanisms to prevent misuse or diversion of these chips. 

    ·         Enforcement: Provides the Secretary of Commerce enforcement capabilities to verify that the exported chips have not been diverted.  

    This issue was highlighted in the House Select Committee on China’s recent report on DeepSeek.

    “Ukraine is ready to take the fastest possible steps to bring real peace, and it is important that the world holds a strong stance,” Zelenskiy said. He called for “tough sanctions” if Russia rejects a full and unconditional ceasefire.
     
    Russia – which is slowly but steadily advancing on the battlefield and is worried that Ukraine will use such a pause to regroup and re-arm – has said it needs to nail down the terms of a ceasefire before signing up to one.
     
    “We have agreed that each side will present its vision of a possible future ceasefire and spell it out in detail,” Russia’s lead negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, told reporters after the meeting. “After such a vision has been presented, we believe it would be appropriate, as also agreed, to continue our negotiations.”
     
    CALM ATMOSPHERE
     
    At the meeting convened by Turkey, the negotiating teams sat opposite one another at a U-shaped table, with the Russians dressed in suits while half of the Ukrainians wore military fatigues.
     
    The atmosphere was calm, a Turkish official said. No concrete timetable or location was agreed for the next talks, the official said, with both sides needing to debrief their leaders first.
     
    The Ukrainians spoke in their own language through an interpreter, a Ukrainian source said, although Russian is widely spoken in Ukraine.
     
    A Ukrainian and a European source said Russia rejected a Ukrainian request for U.S. representatives to be in the room.
     
    Two sources familiar with the talks said Medinsky said Russia was ready to keep fighting for as long as necessary, drawing a parallel with the wars of Tsar Peter the Great against Sweden, which lasted 21 years in the early 1700s.
     
    “We do not want war, but we are ready to fight for a year, two, three — as long as you want,” one of the sources quoted him as saying.
     
    “DETACHED FROM REALITY”
     
    A Ukrainian delegation source said Russia’s demands in the meeting were “detached from reality and go far beyond anything that was previously discussed”.
     
    The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Moscow had issued ultimatums for Ukraine to withdraw from parts of its own territory in order to obtain a ceasefire, “and other non-starters and non-constructive conditions”.
     
    British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the Russian position was “clearly unacceptable” and that European leaders, Ukraine and the U.S. were “closely aligning” their responses.
     
    European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was working on a new package of sanctions against Moscow.
     
    Russia has said it sees its talks with Ukraine as a continuation of the 2022 negotiations, also held in Istanbul. But the terms under discussion then, when Ukraine was still reeling from Russia’s invasion, would be deeply disadvantageous to Kyiv now.
     
    They included a demand by Moscow for large cuts to Ukraine’s military. With Russian forces in control of about a fifth of Ukraine, Putin has also insisted Kyiv cede territory, abandon NATO membership ambitions and become a neutral country.
     
    Ukraine rejects these terms as tantamount to capitulation, and is seeking guarantees of its future security from world powers, especially the United States.
     
    Crediting efforts by Trump and other U.S. officials, Putin’s investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, posted on X that Friday’s talks produced “good results… 1. Largest POW exchange, 2. Ceasefire options that may work 3. Understanding of positions and continued dialogue”.

    Today Congressman Chris Pappas, member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, questioned the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins on his commitment to engaging with New Hampshire stakeholders as VA implements a recent Executive Order requiring a feasibility study and an action plan to expand services at the Manchester VA Medical Center (Manchester VAMC) and support the establishment of a full-service VA hospital in New Hampshire.Watch his remarks here. 

    In his opening statement, Congressman Pappas said, “New Hampshire remains the only state in the contiguous 48 states without a full-service VA hospital. The Manchester VAMC was built in the 1950s. It continues to experience serious infrastructure issues–pipes bursting in the winter, flooding, heating outages, and even insects in the operating surgical suite. On May 9, the Trump Administration announced an Executive Order directing a feasibility study at the VA – within 180 days of the order, submitting an action plan to the President to expand services at the Manchester VA into a full-service medical center. So, veterans have been asking for this for about 20 years now. They’re ready to move past the talking stage and see some action on this.” 

    Pappas asked for Secretary Collins’ commitment that VA engages with New Hampshire veterans and stakeholders as the Department conducts the study and develops its action plan for New Hampshire. 

    Secretary Collins replied, “Yes, Congressman. I appreciate that and I appreciate you carrying the torch for that… I can report to you that that feasibility study started this week. And we are going to be working with our stakeholders in New Hampshire and other places to make sure this goes through.”

    Pappas pressed Secretary Collins’ on his commitment to following through on the Executive Order and establishing a full-service hospital in New Hampshire.

    Secretary Collins replied, “I believe that is the desire of the administration as we go forward and we’re looking at it from that place. You have a system in which we are going to look at and make sure we get the proper needs and proper care in that area.”

    Background: 

    New Hampshire is the only state in the contiguous 48 states to not have a dedicated, full-service VA hospital. An Executive Order issued by President Trump on May 9th instructed VA to complete a feasibility study on expanding services to support a full-service medical center in New Hampshire within 30 days and submit an action plan to the President within 180 days. 

    Earlier today, Pappas led the New Hampshire delegation in a letter calling on VA Secretary Doug Collins to seriously and fully follow through on the feasibility study and action plan, with the goal of establishing a full-service VA hospital in New Hampshire.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Resolution Honoring Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Introduced by Pappas, Guest, and Letlow

The resolution was introduced during National Police Week and recognizes the 345 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty last year, as well as their families.

Peace Officers Memorial Day 2025 honors 345 law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty and those whose stories were recovered in the past year. This resolution expresses unwavering support for law enforcement and recognizes the sacrifices of families who have lost loved ones.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Pappas Rebukes VA Secretary for Putting Veterans at Risk of Foreclosure and Homelessness

    Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01), a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee (HVAC) and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, sharply rebuked the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins for his decision to abruptly end the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) Program – the only VA program that guaranteed foreclosure avoidance for veterans experiencing severe financial hardship, helping them stay in their homes.     Congressman Pappas reiterated that he disagrees fundamentally with VA’s decision to arbitrarily end VASP, especially without an alternative program in place. He pressed Secretary Collins on the confusion caused by the VA’s failure to provide clear guidance about the timeline for ending the VASP program to VSOs, lenders, and especially veteran borrowers, who were robbed of the opportunity for relief through the program as a result.

    Pappas continued to press the Secretary for guidance on what veterans at risk of losing their homes should do, now that VASP has ended: “I ask about this because we heard directly from a constituent who was caught up in this… He’s a 100% service disabled veteran of the First Gulf War. He reached out to our office days before the end of VASP, understanding that he might still have a chance to get into this program and to make sure that he could start making payments and stay in his home along with his service animals… What do veterans like Daniel do to be able to stay in their homes while we wait for Congress to take the important step forward to develop a partial claims program?”

    After Secretary Collins failed to provide a clear answer as to how veterans impacted by the end of VASP could save their homes, Pappas said, “So respectfully, that’s not a good enough answer for my constituent… and now he’s not sure he has any other opportunity to protect his home and to stay in his home. We’re facing a housing crisis in New Hampshire, as we are in states across the country. So would you be open to a foreclosure moratorium in the interim, while we await action in Congress to develop a bipartisan plan for a partial claims program?”

    After Secretary Collins declined to commit to taking any action to protect veterans who are now at risk of losing their homes, Pappas reiterated the need for VA to look out for these veterans, saying, “the fact is this was a last resort program that should have been a stopgap while Congress developed something that was more permanent, and we’re working on that. But we’ve got to be looking out for constituents like this, who number 80,000 across the country, people that are at risk of foreclosure, veterans who deserve our support… Veterans I talked to don’t agree with the abrupt ending to VASP, they don’t agree that we should put more veterans at risk of foreclosure.”

    He closed by urging the Secretary to fulfill his commitment to America’s veterans, saying, “We need better leadership from you to get the job done.”

    During an HVAC markup earlier this month, Pappas called for his colleagues to back a foreclosure moratorium for veterans to give Congress time to stand up a new partial claims program that will help keep veterans in their homes.

    Immediately following Secretary Collins’s announcement that he would end VASP, Pappas spoke out forcefully against the end of VASP during a House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity markup, and called on Collins to immediately reverse his decision to end the program.
