    Pledge to work with UK Government to create ‘the change people need’.

    The UK Autumn Budget should focus on “investment and opportunity”, with more funding for public services, infrastructure and measures to eradicate child poverty, Finance Secretary Shona Robison has said.

    The Finance Secretary pledged to work with the UK Government and devolved administrations to ensure the Autumn Budget on October 30 “works for all four nations and delivers the change that people need”.

    She called for the Chancellor to:

    • change the rules around borrowing to allow for greater investment in public infrastructure and services
    • reverse the forecast cut to capital funding, enabling the Scottish Government to invest more in hospitals, schools and transport
    • abolish the two child limit
    • deliver an Essentials Guarantee providing basic necessities for those who need them most
    • take greater steps towards delivering net zero, including by reforming motoring taxation
    • ensure any changes to tax take account of Scotland’s distinct and devolved tax system

    Ms Robison said:

    “When I met with the Chancellor last month, we were in full agreement that we must put people first in all that we do. This principle must be at the heart of the decisions at the Autumn Budget.

    “I want to work with the Chancellor, and the governments in Wales and Northern Ireland, to ensure that we have a Budget that works for all four nations and delivers the change that people need.

    “It does not need to be another Budget of challenge and constraint. Instead it can be a Budget about investment and opportunity.

    “We’re calling for measures to tackle child poverty and grow our economy. We’d like to see new rules around borrowing that support investment in public services. We want the UK Government to work hand in hand with the devolved administrations to provide the funding to deliver on our priorities.

    “These are the choices I encourage the Chancellor to make.”

    The Finance Secretary also confirmed that the Scottish Budget, outlining the Scottish Government’s proposed tax and spending plans for 2025-26, will be delivered on 4 December.

    The two child limit restricts universal credit and child tax credits to the first two children in most households, if born after April 2017.

    Work to improve a community sports facility has officially kicked-off.

    As part of the city’s ongoing investment in sports facilities, Stoke Damerel Community College is set to become home to three multi-surfaced pitches, providing space for several different sports.

    Work will focus on a brand new, 2G sand pitch, which whilst primarily suitable for hockey, is a multi-sports surface and can be used for a number of other activities.

    Also in the plans is a smaller 3G pitch, specifically targeted at football and rugby use, which has been supported by a £250,000 grant from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation.

    A renovation and upgrade of and existing grass pitch is also set to get underway.

    The new additions will be for both school and community use with modern flood lighting to ensure that they can be used all year round

    The plans complement the work already underway to transform the former Brickfields Sports Centre into a new community health and wellbeing hub that will be operated by the Argyle Community Trust.

    Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Sport, Leisure and HR, joined representatives from Stoke Damerel Community College and the Football Foundation to see work begin.

    Sue said: “It’s always exciting to see projects that have been long in the planning get to the construction stage.

    “I know that these facilities will be so well-received, not just by Stoke Damerel Community College students, but also by the city’s large sporting community.

    “I look forward to seeing work complete and pitches in use by students and residents alike.”

    Dan Cole, Senior Assistant Headteacher of Stoke Damerel Community College, said: “Our new sports facilities will elevate our sports programmes, offering our students and community first-rate resources to train, compete, and stay active.

    “This is a significant step in advancing our commitment to fostering well-rounded students by encouraging both academic achievement and physical development”

    Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.

    “Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.

    “We’re delighted that works are now underway to deliver the new 3G and grass pitches at Stoke Damerel Community College and we’re excited to see the new facilities in action.”

    The Education Bureau today held the “Love Our Home, Treasure Our Country” – Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China & Joint School National Education Activities Kick-off Ceremony.

    The bureau announced that it will collaborate with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Po Leung Kuk, the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China, the Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council, Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council, Hong Kong Aided Primary School Heads Association and Subsidized Primary Schools Council to jointly organise the “Love Our Home, Treasure Our Country 3.0” series of joint school national education activities in the 2024-25 school year.

    Deputy Chief Secretary Cheuk Wing-hing and Secretary for Education Choi Yuk-lin officiated at the kick-off ceremony attended by about 2,500 representatives from school sponsoring bodies and the bureau, principals, teachers, students and parents.

    Addressing the event, Mr Cheuk said that the “Love Our Home, Treasure Our Country 3.0” joint school national education activities will further expand the scale of the event.

    He noted that participating schools cover kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and sister schools on the Mainland, adding that joint school collaboration not only strengthens exchanges among schools but also combines strengths to develop resources, enabling a patriotic atmosphere and sentiments to extend continuously across school campuses in all districts of Hong Kong.

    Mr Cheuk highlighted that love for the country should be the value and sentiment of every Chinese national, and patriotic education and activities play an important role in nurturing the growth of patriotic sentiments.

    He thanked practitioners from the education sector for remaining steadfast in their roles, noting that through learning inside and outside the classroom, students are given the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the country’s history, culture and values from an early age, and experience the distinctiveness of traditional Chinese culture, thereby fostering their pride in being Chinese and enhancing their national pride and sense of responsibility and ownership.

    The kick-off ceremony featured a variety of rich programmes, including a performance by a 90-member joint school Chinese orchestra. In addition, over 100 students performed lion dances, martial arts and other dances. A choir composed of 75 principals from school sponsoring bodies, school councils and government schools marked the ceremony’s finale with a song to express their warm congratulations on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

    Highlights of the kick-off ceremony will be broadcast on RTHK TV 31 at 1.30pm on September 28.

    WASHINGTON – The Co-Chairs of the Abraham Accords Caucus, Representatives Brad Schneider (D-IL), Ann Wagner (R-MO), David Trone (D-MD), and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), have introduced a bipartisan resolution encouraging the U.S. Department of State and civil society organizations to further the goals of the Abraham Accords by promoting peace and tolerance through education across the Middle East. The resolution emphasizes ongoing reforms to national curricula to reduce antisemitic content, combat hate speech, and foster mutual respect and understanding, particularly in countries such as Egypt, the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.

    “The Abraham Accords have shown us the power of diplomacy and cooperation in the Middle East,” said Rep. Brad Schneider. “This resolution underscores the importance of educating future generations with the values of peace, tolerance, and coexistence.     The Abraham Accords Caucus aims to strengthen the Abraham Accords by encouraging and partnerships among the existing Abraham Accords countries and expanding the agreement to include countries that do not currently have diplomatic relations with Israel. The Caucus has successfully pushed for passage of the Israel Relations Normalization Act, DEFEND Act, and MARITIME Act as well as multiple NDAA provisions addressing diplomatic, military and intelligence cooperation. Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) co-chair the companion caucus in the Senate.

    The Abraham Accords, which were signed on September 15, 2020, resulted in peace and normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab states—the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco—transforming the region, enhancing Israel’s security, creating economic opportunities for Arab states and advancing vital U.S. national security interests. The Accords built on the success of previous peace normalization agreements between Israel, Egypt and Jordan.

    Cancer incidence trends in 2021 largely returned to what they were before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). However, there was little evidence of a rebound in incidence that would account for the decline in diagnoses in 2020, when screening and other medical care was disrupted. One exception was breast cancer, where the researchers did see an uptick in diagnoses of advanced-stage disease in 2021. The study appears Sept. 24, 2024, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

    A previous study showed that new cancer diagnoses fell abruptly in early 2020, as did the volume of pathology reports, suggesting that many cancers were not being diagnosed in a timely manner. To determine whether these missed diagnoses were caught in 2021, possibly as more advanced cancers, researchers from NIH’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) compared observed cancer incidence rates for 2021 with those expected from pre-pandemic trends using data from NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program.

    A full recovery in cancer incidence should appear as an increase over pre-pandemic levels (also known as a rebound) to account for the missed diagnoses. The researchers looked at cancer overall, as well as five major cancer types that vary in how they are typically detected: through screening (female breast and prostate cancer), due to symptoms (lung and bronchus and pancreatic cancer), or incidentally during other medical procedures (thyroid cancer).

    Cancer incidence rates overall and for most specific cancers approached pre-pandemic levels, with no significant rebound to account for the 2020 decline. However, in addition to an uptick in new diagnoses of advanced breast cancer in 2021, the data also provided some evidence of an increase in diagnoses of advanced pancreatic cancer. Also, new diagnoses of thyroid cancers in 2021 were still below pre-pandemic levels.

    The researchers concluded that 2021 was a transition year that was still affected by new variants and new waves of COVID-19 cases, which continued to impact medical care. They said the findings highlight the need for ongoing monitoring to understand the long-term impacts of the pandemic on cancer diagnoses and outcomes.

    Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order (EO) 24-209, Emergency Management – Amending Executive Order 24-208– Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, increasing the number of counties in the state of Florida under a state of emergency to 61 ahead of the storm.

    STATE OF FLORIDA
    OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
    EXECUTIVE ORDER NUMBER 24-208
    (Emergency Management – Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine)

         WHEREAS, on September 23, 2024, I issued Executive Order 24-208, declaring a state of emergency for forty-one counties across the State of Florida due to the dangers presented by Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine; and

         WHEREAS, on September 24, 2024, Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is located 120 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman, or 395 miles south-southwest of Key West, Florida, and is moving northwest at 8 mph; and

          WHEREAS, based on atmospheric and oceanic conditions, highly conducive environmental conditions are forecast to develop Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine into a tropical storm this afternoon over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, and become a hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday; and

         WHEREAS, computer forecast models indicate a likely possibility of significant to rapid intensification of this system, forming a major hurricane before it approaches the northeastern Gulf Coast on Thursday; and

         WHEREAS, the forecast indicates that this system will become large and powerful before landfall, and there is a significant threat of life-threatening storm surge and damaging wind gusts for the Florida Gulf Coast; and

         WHEREAS, due to the system’s size, the accompanying storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from its center, and the faster forward approach of this system will likely result in farther inland penetration of strong winds even after landfall; and

    WHEREAS,     there are Tropical Storm Watches in effect for eighteen Florida counties, Hurricane Watches in effect for eighteen Florida counties, and Storm Surge Watches extending from the Southwest Florida Coast to the central Florida Panhandle; and

           WHEREAS, the water tables and riverine levels across much of north and west-central Florida remain in above normal stage due to recent Hurricane Debby and additional heavy rainfall could cause significant riverine flooding that may prolong impacts for an extended period of time; and

         WHEREAS, these impacts could damage the operational capability of critical infrastructure including major interstates, roadways, bridges, airports, schools, hospitals, and power grids; and

         WHEREAS, an amendment to Executive Order 24-208 is necessary because recovery efforts and those affected by this disaster require the continued support of the State of Florida; and

    WHEREAS, as Governor of Florida, I am responsible to meet the dangers presented to the State of Florida and its people by this emergency.

    NOW, THEREFORE, I, RON DESANTIS, as Governor of Florida, by virtue of the authority vested in me by Article IV, Section l(a) of the Florida Constitution and by the Florida Emergency Management Act, as amended, and all other applicable laws, promulgate the following Executive Order, to take immediate effect:

    Dartmouth, Nova Scotia – The Government of Canada is committed to addressing problematic vessels that impact our marine environment and coastal communities. Recently, the Canadian Coast Guard’s operation to safely remove and dismantle three vessels in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, was successfully completed.

    The vessels Hannah Atlantic, Cape Rouge and Rupert Brand VI had been in the area for a number of years and, due to their deteriorating condition, the Canadian Coast Guard determined that they posed a pollution risk to the marine environment and that remediation efforts were required. On January 2, 2024, RJ MacIsaac Marine Recycling and Construction of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, was awarded the contract to dismantle and remove the three vessels for $3,769,772.

    Work to remove the vessels from the marine environment began in early June 2024. The Canadian Coast Guard remained on-site throughout the operation to provide overall command of the removal. Initially, the removal of the vessels and site cleanup was expected to take six months, but the work was accelerated with the use of additional transportation equipment and was completed in late July 2024, almost four months ahead of schedule. The full remediation and cleanup of the site is now complete. By the end of the operation, more than 15,000 litres of contaminated water had been removed from the vessels and more than 170,000 kg of steel had been recycled.

    Protecting the marine environment is a top priority for the Canadian Coast Guard, and all reported problematic vessels are taken seriously. Any citizen who witnesses marine pollution or a maritime hazard is asked to report it to the Canadian Coast Guard.

    Two people have been arrested by detectives who have today named the teenage victim of a murder in Woolwich.

    Police were called approximately 18:35hrs on Sunday, 22 September to reports of a disturbance on Eglinton Road, SE18.

    Officers attended and found a teenage boy with a stab injury. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics at the scene, he sadly died a short time later.

    He has today been named as Daejuan Campbell, who was aged 15. His family continue to be supported by specialist officers.

    Two men – aged 52 and 18 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

    Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry said: “My thoughts are with Daejuan’s loved ones as they try and come to terms with this heart-breaking incident.

    “The investigation into Daejuan’s death is still in the early stages and our officers are working around the clock to build a picture of what happened on Sunday evening.

    “Local officers will remain in the area whilst we continue with our investigation. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions, they are there to support you and the community.

    “I want to appeal to you again and ask if you know anything about the death of young Daejuan. Did you see anything suspicious around the Eglinton Road area? Did you see anyone running away from the area? Do you have any footage? If you do then please contact police, you can upload any footage to this link.

    MOLINE, IL – As we approach the start of National Crime Prevention Month, Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) is announcing $250,000 for the City of Kewanee to hire two law enforcement officers to increase community policing and crime prevention efforts.  

    “Our local police departments, especially in our small hometowns, often work under tight budgets with limited resources,” said Sorensen. “And despite these conditions, our brave men and women in law enforcement work around the clock to keep our neighborhoods safe. I am proud to announce this funding for the Kewanee Police Department, so our local police have the tools they need to fight crime and protect our communities. I will always work to bring tax dollars back home to make sure Northwestern Illinois is safe for our neighbors.”   

    “We are grateful for this grant from the COPS hiring program, which will allow us to expand our community policing efforts without placing additional strain on local budgets,” said Chief Stephen Kijanowski of the Kewanee Police Department. “These funds will also help us address local violent crime and the narcotics issues facing our community, enhancing our public safety initiatives and better serving the residents of Kewanee.” 

    The $250,000 in funding for the City of Kewanee is coming from the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which builds trust between police departments and the communities they serve. These grants allow local police departments to hire community policing professionals, develop and test innovative policing strategies, and train local government leaders to best support their police officers and protect their communities.  

    This past May, Sorensen led a group of 24 of his colleagues in calling on Congress to fully fund the COPS program in direct response to roundtable discussions and meetings he has hosted with law enforcement from across Central and Northwestern Illinois.    

    Congressman Eric Sorensen serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years.     QUEZON CITY – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are hosting the Preparedness and Response Excellence in the Philippines (PREP) Forum on September 24 – 25, highlighting local solutions to tackle food insecurity in disaster-prone areas. Supported by USAID and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this forum aims to enhance the Philippines’ emergency response and management capacities, supporting vulnerable Filipinos during natural disasters.

    “I am incredibly impressed at the speed of innovation in disaster management in the Philippines,” said USAID Philippines Deputy Mission Director Rebekah Eubanks. “As your friend, partner, and ally, the United States remains committed to strengthening our partnerships and working with the Philippine government to rebuild and restore lives following disasters.”

    Ahead of the forum, WFP launched the PREP Innovation Challenge in July to explore local solutions that tackle food insecurity.     The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to $1.5 million in the new Agricultural Workforce Equity and Diversity Initiative (AWEDI) to help minority groups start and build businesses in the agri-food sector.

    Funded through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), AWEDI provides grants of up to $100,000 to support business ventures led by primary agricultural producers and food processors who are Indigenous peoples, visible minorities, 2SLGBTQI+ people, persons with disabilities, youth, women or members of French linguistic minority communities.

    AWEDI is open to applications from organizations, research bodies, municipalities or Indigenous communities. Successful projects will support underrepresented groups in accessing spaces and equipment to grow or process agri-food products, as well as resources to help with financing.

    Applications open on October 8, 2024, and will remain open until December 3, 2024.

    The Sustainable CAP is a 5-year, $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency of Canada’s agriculture, agri‐food and agri‐based products sector. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and a $2.5-billion commitment that is cost-shared 60% federally and 40% provincially/territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories.

It can persist for long periods of time in the soil at various depths, typically thousands of years. Biochar is produced by heating biomass or waste materials containing carbon through pyrolysis. Pyrolysis involves thermal and chemical decomposition of biomass in limited or zero supply of oxygen, typically at temperatures ranging from 300°C to 1000°C. Biochar can be used as a soil amendment to improve soil physical and chemical properties, enhance water retention, and sequester carbon. It also contributes to climate change mitigation by stabilizing carbon in soils for thousands of years, preventing it from being released as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Biochar has shown promise in increasing crop yields, improving soil fertility, and reducing environmental pollution through its ability to retain nutrients and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

    1PointFive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), announced recently that the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) will provide up to $500 million to support the development of the South Texas Direct Air Capture (DAC) Hub.     There was a flurry of interest on a recent Friday when Naval Hospital Bremerton openly shared on Facebook that due to a high volume of prescriptions coupled with limited staffing, there might be longer wait times at the main pharmacy.

    Over 4,700 social media users saw that posting. Most were understanding. Others were vexed by the possibility of having a potential time management issue to pick up their medication.

    Yet for those eligible beneficiaries who use the NHB Pharmacy ScriptCenter, it remained business as usual in using the automated – and secure – prescription refill dispenser available around the clock.

    The timesaving ScriptCenter has proven to be such a sensation that a second automated system has been added to Naval Hospital Bremerton.

    “It is with great excitement that our second ScriptCenter machine is up and running,” Lt. Cmdr. Evan Romrell, NHB Pharmacy assistant department head.

    NHB’s ScriptCenter is already used more than any other in the U.S. – surpassing such locales as Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt and John Hopkins – for picking up prescriptions after being installed on Naval Station Everett in 2021 and added on Naval Base Kitsap Bangor and NHB in February 2022.

    It took less than six months for the benefits to became obvious.

    According to Romrell, NHB’s ScriptCenter has gradually climbed in usage, from 800 per week in the initial year to 1,200 per week last year.

    “A week earlier we dispensed 1,354 prescriptions to 560 different patients, and 533 of those prescriptions were picked up while the Main Pharmacy was closed,” exclaimed Romrell.

    As of September 1, 2024, there are now over 7,850 registered users.

    Romrell notes since ScriptCenter started, February 14, 2022, over 89,900 prescriptions have been dispensed to 6,874 different patients, with 35,831 distributed after hours and on the weekends.

    “It’s the go-to option for picking up new prescriptions afterhours and on weekends while avoiding the pharmacy lobby,” said Romrell, adding that Pharmacy staff continually share the benefits of the system. “We have an amazing crew in the pharmacy that are consistently pushing ScriptCenter as the preferred option.”

    “We realized shortly after installing that the machines rarely had issues and were so easy to use. Once patients used it the first time, they were hooked,” continued Romrell, citing that the NHB ScriptCenter was getting so busy there was often a line of people waiting.

    “Two machines make it less likelihood of waiting,” Romrell said.

    “A large majority of our patients either know about it already or are getting educated during their pickup of medications in the lobby or during their phone call to us,” added Cmdr. Dean Kang, pharmacist.

    Although Main Pharmacy staff still clarify that those who don’t use it, should, there is still hesitation amongst some patients.

    “Why use it? The better question is, why not use it instead of waiting in the pharmacy? On Friday we had a really busy day and were hampered with staff call outs,” related Romrell. “For those patients that chose to use Q-Anywhere combined with ScriptCenter there was no difference and no wait. Patients can also use the Pharmacy Automated call-in line and have their refills processed and loaded in ScriptCenter on the same day, even on weekends and holidays.

    New users can start the process by using their cell phone to text the words ‘get in line’ to 1-877-909-2512 for Q-Anywhere.

    The advantages to any eligible beneficiary are multiple. Patients can follow their own time and own schedule. There’s no waiting. When combined with Q-Anywhere a patient can request medications and pick them up without ever waiting on hold or setting foot in the pharmacy waiting room.

    Romrell does note that there is a caveat. First time users require enrollment using a prescription number. But if a patient doesn’t have one, they can just text the Pharmacy and one will be provided.

    “If it’s someone’s first time using it, come in during business hours. That way if there’s any issues, our staff will happily walk them through,” said Romrell, adding that refrigerated items can’t go in ScriptCenter.

    There are also advantages with ScriptCenter for the Pharmacy staff, most notably in having flexibility in filling prescriptions.

    “If we know that we have until 11 a.m. to get a prescription filled we can focus on other patients waiting in the Pharmacy lobby. Every prescription picked up in the ScriptCenter is one less coming to a window or the drive through,” explained Romrell.

    For those who haven’t used ScriptCenter, Romrell has some ready advice, “If you haven’t tried it, try it out. When linked, Q-Anywhere prescription activation and ScriptCenter dispensing will totally change your pharmacy experience. Guaranteed.”

    Eight companies in the ISG group (the ISG Companies) entered administration on 20 September 2024. Timothy Vance, Alan Michael Hudson and Dan Edkins were appointed as joint administrators of the following companies:

    We wish to make wholesalers/distributors, veterinarians and end-users aware that Ecuphar N.V. has initiated a Class II recall for Prednicare 1 mg, 500 tablets.

    This recall is due to the presence of 5 mg Prednicare tablets found in 2 pots of Prednicare 1 mg.  This recall applies to the following batch only:

    Prednicare 1mg, 500 tablets 24B01 02/2027

    This contamination involves a clear risk of overdose of 5 times the recommended dose. However, up to today no adverse events linked to the affected batch number and defect were reported.  

    Overdose signs are detailed in the product information leaflet, under ‘Special Warnings’; ‘Overdose’.

    Ecuphar N.V. is contacting distributors/wholesalers and veterinarians to examine inventory immediately and quarantine products subject to this recall.

    End-users should return prescribed tablets of Prednicare 1mg, batch 24B01 only, to their veterinary surgery.

    U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) responded to a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal with a letter to the editor highlighting the importance of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to support our allies and keep energy costs low.

    “Your editorial “Where’s Kamala on LNG Exports?” (Sept. 19) raises a question similar to the one I posed to my colleagues: Where are Senate Democrats on fracking?
    Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is essential to our ability to provide abundant, affordable energy to our citizens and allies. If House Democrats are writing to the White House in support of liquefied natural-gas exports, one might assume they should be in favor of fracking, too.
    I took to the floor with Sen. Katie Britt (R., Ala.) to request that the Senate pass the Protecting American Energy Production Act by unanimous consent. This bill, which would have prohibited the president from unilaterally canceling fracking projects, was immediately blocked. Ironically, one of the senators who opposed it was from Massachusetts, whose residents pay the nation’s highest electricity costs to heat their homes.
    Our allies want to do business with us, and our economy desperately needs it. Instead we’re letting the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries set the world price for crude and allowing our adversaries to get rich off our backs. Never mind that we could produce the energy in a much cleaner and more efficient way.
    The world demand for fossil fuels is increasing. Why are we continuing the moratorium at the expense of the American taxpayer?”
