    Abuja (Agenzia Fides) – “If there is a lesson we can learn from this, it is that it is important to listen to one another, as in a family,” says the Bishop of Ahiara in Nigeria, Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, to Fides.“Between father, mother and children there can be misunderstandings, but ultimately children must obey their parents,” stresses Bishop Simeon Okezuo Nwobi. To understand the Bishop’s statement, it is necessary to look back at the recent history of his diocese.The diocese of Ahiara was the subject of a controversial episcopal appointment after Peter Ebere Okpaleke was appointed as local bishop by Pope Benedict XVI on December 7, 2012, (see Fides, 7/12/2012). Given the strong opposition in the diocese to which he was assigned, Bishop Okpaleke was unable to take office.On June 8, 2017, during a private audience with a delegation from the diocese, Pope Francis expressed his “deep regret” for the matter (see Fides, 9/6/2017) and asked “that every priest or church official incardinated in the diocese of Ahiara, both those who reside there and those who live and work elsewhere or abroad, write me a letter asking for forgiveness; everyone should write to me individually and personally; we must all share this pain.In this letter1. obedience to the Pope must be expressed unequivocally, and2. the writer must be ready to recognize the bishop whom the Pope sends and appoints.3. The letter must be sent within 30 days from today and by July 9. Anyone who does not do so will be ipso facto suspended and removed from office a divinis.”On February 19, 2018 (see, Fides 19/2/2018), a communication from the then Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples announced that the Holy Father “received, in the months of June and July 2017, as he had requested, a total of 200 letters from individual priests of the Diocese of Ahiara in which they reaffirmed their obedience and fidelity to him.” However, it was also pointed out that it was difficult for him to work with the bishop “after all these years of conflict.” “In view of the repentance shown, the Holy Father did not wish to impose canonical sanctions and entrusted the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples to responding to each of the priests individually; the Congregation invited each priest to reflect on the grave damage caused to the Church of Christ and hoped that in the future such unreasonable acts of resistance to a bishop appointed by the Holy Father will not be repeated; it also called on the clergy to make gestures of forgiveness and reconciliation towards the bishop,” the statement reads.At the same time (see Fides, 19/2/2018) the Pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Peter Ebere Okpaleke of Ahiara.After appointing an Apostolic Administrator “Sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis” in the person of Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, on May 3, 2024 Pope Francis appointed Simeon Okezuo Nwobi as Bishop of Ahiara (see Fides, 3/5/2024), who had already been appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the diocese on October 14, 2023.”My appointment was greeted with joy and I was overwhelmingly accepted by the faithful,” says Bishop Okezuo Nwobi. “The faithful show me their solidarity and even the people of Ahiara who live in the diaspora in different parts of the world have shown me their support so that I can carry out the task entrusted to me by the Holy Father in the best possible way.   • MIL-OSI Global: Brown bananas, crowded ports, empty shelves: What to expect if there’s a big dockworkers strike in the US

    Whether you’re buying a can of sardines or a screwdriver, getting products to consumers requires that supply chains function well.

    The availability of labor is essential in each link of the supply chain. That includes the workers who make sure that your tinned fish and handy tools smoothly journey from their point of origin to where they’ll wind up, whether it’s a supermarket, hardware store or your front door.

    Amazingly, 90% of all internationally traded products are carried by ships at some point. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was hard not to notice the supply chain disruptions. For U.S. ports, there were many bouts of congestion. Demand for goods that were either more or less popular than they would normally be became volatile. Shortages of truckers and other freight service providers wreaked havoc on land-based and maritime transportation networks.

    Consumers became exasperated when they saw all the empty shelves. They endured price spikes for items that were suddenly scarce, such as hand sanitizer, computer equipment and bleach.

    I’m a scholar of supply chain management who belongs to a research group that studies ways to make supply chains better able to withstand disruptions. Based on that research, plus what I learned while writing a book about labor and supply chains, I’m concerned about the turmoil that could be around the corner for cargo arriving on ships.

    Concerns over pay and technology

    The International Longshoremen’s Association’s six-year contract with the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports will expire on Sept. 30, 2024, at midnight unless the two sides reach an agreement before that deadline. Without a breakthrough, the 45,000 port workers intend to take part in a strike that would paralyze ports from Maine to Texas.

    Should they walk off the job, it would be the first such work stoppage for the East Coast ports since 1977.

    Labor and management disagree over how much to raise wages, and the union also wants to see limits on the use of automation for cranes, gates and trucks at the ports in the new contract. The union is seeking a 77% increase in pay over the next six years and is concerned that jobs may be lost because of automation.

    Dockworkers on the West Coast, who are not on strike, are paid much higher regular wages than their East Coast and Gulf Coast counterparts who are preparing for a strike. The West Coast workers earn at least an estimated US$116,000 per year, for a 40-hour work week, versus the roughly $81,000 dockworkers at the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports take home, not counting overtime pay.

    Management is represented in the talks by the U.S. Maritime Association, which includes the major shippers, terminal operators and port authorities.

    What to expect if there’s a strike

    As many as 36 ports would have to stop operating if a strike happens, blocking almost half of the cargo going in and out of the U.S. on ships.

    If the strike lasts just a day, then it would not be noticeable to a typical consumer. However, businesses of all kinds would no doubt feel the pinch. J.P. Morgan estimates that a strike could cost the U.S. economy $5 billion every day.

    Even if only a one-day strike happens, it could take about five days to straighten out the supply chain.

    If a strike lasts a week, the results would quickly become apparent to most consumers.

    Some shipping companies have already begun to reroute their cargo to the West Coast. Even if there’s no strike at all, costs will rise and the warehouses could run out of room.

    The effects on everything from bananas and cherries to chocolate, meat, fish and cheese could be severe, and the shipping disruption could also hamper trade in some prescription drugs if the strike lasts at least a week.

    If the strike were to last a month or more, supplies needed by factories could be in short supply. Numerous consumer products would not be delivered. Workers would be laid off. U.S. exports, including agricultural ones, might get stuck rather than shipped to their destinations. Inflation might increase again. And there would be a new bout of heightened economic anxiety and uncertainty – along with immense financial losses.

    All the while, West Coast ports would face unusually high demand for their services, wreaking havoc on shipping there too.

    Yes, we’d have no bananas

    My research group’s latest work on supply chain disruptions and the effects of various transportation disruptions, including delays, quantifies the impact on the quality of fresh produce. We did a case study on bananas.

    This isn’t a niche problem.

    Bananas are the most-consumed fresh fruit in the U.S.

    Many of the bananas sold in the U.S. are grown in Ecuador, Guatemala and Costa Rica. About 75% of them arrive at ports on the East and Gulf coasts.

    Although bananas are relatively easy to ship, they require appropriate temperatures and humidity. Even under the best conditions, their quality deteriorates. Long delays will mean shippers will be trying to foist mushy brown bananas on consumers who might reject them.

    Alternatively, banana growers may opt to find other markets. It’s reasonable to expect to find fewer bananas and much higher prices – possibly of a lower quality. Flying bananas to the U.S. would be too expensive to sustain.

    Fresh meat and other refrigerated foods could spoil before they can complete their journeys, and fresh berries, along with other fruits and vegetables, could perish before reaching their destinations.

    If there’s a port strike, tons of fresh produce, including bananas, that would arrive after Oct. 1 would end up having to be discarded. That is unfortunate, given the rising food insecurity rate in the U.S.

    1947 Taft-Hartley Act

    More than 170 trade groups are urging the Biden administration to intervene at the last minute to avoid a strike.

    The government can invoke the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which allows the president to ask a court to order an 80-day cooling-off period when public health or safety is at risk.

    However, President Joe Biden reportedly does not plan to invoke it – even as he urges the two sides to settle their differences.

    So if you’re planning to bake banana bread or were thinking you might get an early start on your holiday shopping, I’d advise you to make those shopping trips as soon as possible – just in case.

    Brussels (Agenzia Fides) – “The synodal process must be a return to the Gospel; it must not have among its priorities some ‘fashionable’ reform, but ask: how can we bring the Gospel to a society that no longer listens to it or has distanced itself from the faith? Let us all ask ourselves this question”. On the penultimate day of the Apostolic Journey to the heart of Europe, Pope Francis meets the Bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated men and women, seminarians and pastoral workers of Belgium in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Koekelberg, offering the local Catholic community, and the entire Western Church, a profound reflection on what he himself defines as a “crisis of faith” that the West itself is experiencing. A crisis, the Pontiff underlines, which is pushing the Catholic community “to return to the essential, that is, to the Gospel, so that the good news that Jesus brought into the world may be announced again to everyone, making all its beauty shine”. But Christ, he points out, is not a negative experience, on the contrary it is “a time that is offered to us to shake ourselves, to question ourselves and to change. It is a precious opportunity – in biblical language it is called kairòs – to be awakened from torpor and to rediscover the paths of the Spirit. When we experience desolation, in fact, we must always ask ourselves what message the Lord wants to communicate to us”. This “crisis of faith”, underlines the Bishop of Rome, shows us how the West has passed “from a Christianity placed in a hospitable social framework to a Christianity ‘of minority’, or rather, of testimony”. Finally, the Pope recommends to the Church of Belgium to be merciful: “In the face of the experience of evil, we simply apply earthly justice that says: ‘whoever makes a mistake must pay’. However, the justice of God is superior”. And, dwelling on the concept of justice, the Pontiff also speaks of abuse (last night in the Apostolic Nunciature he met 17 victims of abuse by the Belgian clergy, ed.) thanking the Catholic community “for the great work” done “to transform anger and pain into help, closeness and compassion. Abuse generates atrocious suffering and wounds, also undermining the path of faith. And there is a need for so much mercy, so as not to remain with a heart of stone in the face of the suffering of the victims, to make them feel our closeness and offer all the help possible, to learn from them to be a Church that serves all without subjugating anyone”. In greeting those present, Francis recalls a work by Magritte, an illustrious Belgian painter entitled “The Act of Faith”. The canvas represents a door closed from the inside, which however is broken in the center, it is open to the sky: “It is a gash, which invites us to go beyond, to turn our gaze forward and upward, to never close ourselves in. This is an image that I leave you, as a symbol of a Church that never closes its doors, that offers everyone an opening to the infinite, that knows how to look beyond”. “Walk together, you and the Holy Spirit, to be a Church like this. Without the Spirit, nothing Christian happens,” concluded the Pope, who at the end of the meeting went to the royal crypt, beneath the church of Our Lady of Laeken, where the tombs of many members of the Royal House of Belgium are gathered. Subsequently, in front of the King and those present, he praised his courage, when he chose to “leave his post as King so as not to sign a murderous law”.     WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29), Congressman David Trone (MD-06), and Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) introduced a resolution designating October 2024 as National Youth Justice Action Month. The resolution sheds light on the collateral consequences youth face when they are treated as adults in the criminal justice system and encourages the Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to prioritize rehabilitation and support over wasteful incarceration.     Alexander Novak took part in the Youth Day of the international forum “Russian Energy Week”

    Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak took part in the Youth Day as part of the international forum “Russian Energy Week”, which traditionally brings together representatives of the youth community – schoolchildren, students, postgraduates and young specialists in the fuel and energy sector.

    The Youth Day was held in the format of the intellectual game “Who Wants to Become an Energy Specialist”, co-hosted by Alexander Novak.

    Three teams took part in the game, which included managers and representatives of key companies in the industry and students from specialized universities.

    The oil and gas industry was represented by the Chairman of the Management Board of PJSC Gazprom Neft Alexander Dyukov and a first-year master’s student in the Oil and Gas Engineering program at the Tyumen Industrial University Maria Sivkova. The mining industry team included Vladimir Rashevsky, a member of the Supervisory Board of the NP Market Council Association, and Ilya Stepanov, a fifth-year student in the Transport Systems of Mining Production program at the Empress Catherine II St. Petersburg Mining University. The electric power industry was represented by Andrey Ryumin, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of PJSC Rosseti, and Egor Sergeev, a first-year master’s student in the Electric Power Industry and Electrical Engineering program at the National Research University MPEI.

    Participants answered questions regarding the history of mineral extraction, the geography of significant industry facilities in Russia and other countries, scientific discoveries, the technological process of energy resource production, etc.

    The players had the opportunity to use hints twice – from the audience and experts, who were the rectors of the country’s leading industry universities. Each team answered all seven questions and earned the maximum number of points.

    Thus, all three teams won the main prize. The students received the opportunity to intern at the companies PAO Gazprom Neft, the association NP Market Council, PAO Rosseti, and the mentors were invited to intern at the Government of Russia.

    “Energy is one of the most high-tech areas where modern digital technologies are being implemented today. Therefore, it is especially pleasant to see talented, proactive schoolchildren, students, young industry specialists in this hall, with whom the future of our energy sector is connected. As you know, Russia is one of the world leaders in the fuel and energy sector, and it is very important for us to maintain these positions,” said Alexander Novak.

    At the end of the game, Alexander Novak awarded participants of professional competitions in the oil and gas complex and energy sector: IT Championship of the Oil Industry, International Engineering Championship CASE-IN, All-Russian Competition of Graduation Qualification Works with commemorative diplomas.

The CGFM is a professional certification awarded by the Association of Government Accountants.

    Alex is fluent in both English and Spanish. Dr. Mark Moyou is a Senior Data Scientist at NVIDIA, developing scalable machine learning solutions for top North American retailers. With previous roles at Lucidworks and Alstom Transportation, he brings a wealth of experience in machine learning applications. Dr. Moyou, who holds advanced degrees in Systems Engineering, also actively contributes to the tech community as the host of the Caribbean Tech Pioneers Podcast and the Southern Data Science Conference in Atlanta.

    Brussels (Agenzia Fides) – “The synodal process must be a return to the Gospel; it must not have among its priorities some ‘fashionable’ reform, but ask: how can we bring the Gospel to a society that no longer listens to it or has distanced itself from the faith? Let us all ask ourselves this question”. On the penultimate day of the Apostolic Journey to the heart of Europe, Pope Francis meets the Bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated men and women, seminarians and pastoral workers of Belgium in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Koekelberg, offering the local Catholic community, and the entire Western Church, a profound reflection on what he himself defines as a “crisis of faith” that the West itself is experiencing. A crisis, the Pontiff underlines, which is pushing the Catholic community “to return to the essential, that is, to the Gospel, so that the good news that Jesus brought into the world may be announced again to everyone, making all its beauty shine”. Christ, he points out, is “a time that is offered to us to shake ourselves, to question ourselves and to change. It is a precious opportunity – in biblical language it is called kairòs – to be awakened from torpor and to rediscover the paths of the Spirit. When we experience desolation, in fact, we must always ask ourselves what message the Lord wants to communicate to us”. This “crisis of faith”, underlines the Bishop of Rome, shows us how in certain areas of the world we have gone “from a Christianity placed in a hospitable social framework to a Christianity ‘of minority’, or rather, of testimony”. And this, he continues, “requires the courage of an ecclesial conversion, to start those pastoral transformations that also concern the customs, the models, the languages of faith, so that they are truly at the service of evangelization”. In this perspective, “this courage is also required of priests. To be priests who do not limit themselves to preserving or managing a heritage of the past, but pastors in love with Jesus Christ and attentive to grasping the questions of the Gospel, often implicit, as they walk with the holy People of God, a little in front, a little in the middle and a little at the back”. Hence the reflection on the synodal process, which in a few days will see a further step forward with the celebration of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly in the Vatican. Finally, the Pope recommends to the Church of Belgium to be merciful: “In the face of the experience of evil, we simply apply earthly justice that says: ‘whoever makes a mistake must pay’. However, the justice of God is superior”. And, dwelling on the concept of justice, the Pontiff also speaks of abuse (last night in the Apostolic Nunciature he met 17 victims of abuse by the Belgian clergy, ed.) thanking the Catholic community “for the great work” done “to transform anger and pain into help, closeness and compassion. Abuse generates atrocious suffering and wounds, also undermining the path of faith. And there is a need for so much mercy, so as not to remain with a heart of stone in the face of the suffering of the victims, to make them feel our closeness and offer all the help possible, to learn from them to be a Church that serves all without subjugating anyone”. In greeting those present, Francis recalls a work by Magritte, an illustrious Belgian painter entitled “The Act of Faith”. The canvas represents a door closed from the inside, which however is broken in the center, it is open to the sky: “It is a gash, which invites us to go beyond, to turn our gaze forward and upward, to never close ourselves in. This is an image that I leave you, as a symbol of a Church that never closes its doors, that offers everyone an opening to the infinite, that knows how to look beyond”. “Walk together, you and the Holy Spirit, to be a Church like this. Without the Spirit, nothing Christian happens,” concluded the Pope, who at the end of the meeting went to the royal crypt, beneath the church of Our Lady of Laeken, where the tombs of many members of the Royal House of Belgium are gathered. Welcomed by the King and Queen, the Pope stopped in front of the tomb of King Baudouin in silent prayer. Subsequently, in front of the King and those present, he praised his courage, when he chose to “leave his post as King so as not to sign a murderous law”. In 1992, in fact, the sovereign abdicated for 36 hours so as not to sign the law on the legalization of abortion.     RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment has charged a man with multiple offences, including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, following a disturbance in Beaver Bank.

    On September 26, at approximately 8:15 p.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment responded to a report of an unwanted person outside a home on Sherri Ln. Upon arrival, responding officers confirmed the identity of the man and determined that he was in breach of conditions. When officers advised the man he was under arrest, he fled inside his home, which was nearby, grabbed a bat and returned outside, threatening the officers.

    The man was highly agitated and officers made several attempts to subdue and arrest him, including deploying their conducted energy weapons, before safely taking him into custody. The man and two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident. All three were treated and released by EHS.

    Shawn Michael Deschenes, 51, of Beaver Bank, has been charged with:

    • Assaulting a Peace Officer (two counts)
    • Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon (three counts)
    • Uttering Threats
    • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
    • Resist Arrest
    • Mischief
    • Criminal Harassment
    • Causing Disturbance (two counts)
    • Failure to Comply with a Release Order (two counts)

    Deschenes appeared in Dartmouth Provincial Court on September 27 and was remanded into custody. He will return in court on October 1, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

    Hassan Nasrallah and the terrorist group he led, Hezbollah, were responsible for killing hundreds of Americans over a four-decade reign of terror.  His death from an Israeli airstrike is a measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.

    The strike that killed Nasrallah took place in the broader context of the conflict that began with Hamas’s massacre on October 7, 2023.  Nasrallah, the next day, made the fateful decision to join hands with Hamas and open what he called a “northern front” against Israel.

    The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and any other Iranian-supported terrorist groups.  Just yesterday, I directed my Secretary of Defense to further enhance the defense posture of U.S. military forces in the Middle East region to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader regional war.

    Ultimately, our aim is to de-escalate the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic means.  In Gaza, we have been pursuing a deal backed by the UN Security Council for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.  In Lebanon, we have been negotiating a deal that would return people safely to their homes in Israel and southern Lebanon.  It is time for these deals to close, for the threats to Israel to be removed, and for the broader Middle East region to gain greater stability.

    To mark the 90th year of its establishment, Reserve Bank of India hosted RBI@90 Inter Institutional Cricket Tournament at Jaipur, Rajasthan from September 21-28, 2024. Teams with Indian players having experience of playing at International and National level participated in the tournament. The tournament was played in the twenty over format.

    The event commenced with Opening Ceremony and Exhibition Match on September 21, 2024. Finals of the tournament was played on September 28, 2024 between SPJ Cargo and Bank of Baroda at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

    Finals started with introduction of both the teams and unveiling of trophy of the tournament. Bank of Baroda won the toss and scored 157 runs. SPJ Cargo chased the target to win the tournament.

    The matches of the tournament were streamed live on the Reserve Bank of India’s YouTube channel.

    Stephen Simpson, 61, of Bradford, West Yorkshire; Phillipa Green, 24, of Penryn, Cornwall and Mary Somerville, 77, of Bradford, West Yorkshire will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 September.

    The three were arrested by police following the incident on Friday, 27 September.

    Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) released a statement after voting against a continuing resolution that funds the woke, weaponized and wasteful spending of the Biden-Harris Administration until December 20th.

    Moore previously supported a six-month continuing resolution that included the SAVE Act, but failed to pass. This legislation would have amended the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office. Moore is a co-sponsor of this legislation.

    Since the beginning of the Biden-Harris Administration, more than eight million illegal aliens have entered our country. In many states, these illegals are eligible for driver’s licenses and other benefits, providing ample opportunities to register to vote in federal elections. The SAVE Act passed the House in July, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer refuses to consider it in the Senate.

    Search and rescue operations remain underway in communities across Western North Carolina and supplies are being brought into the region by air following devastating impacts from Tropical Storm Helene.

    “This is a historic and catastrophic storm for Western North Carolina and I’m grateful to first responders working right now to save lives and evacuate residents,” Governor Cooper said. “Efforts are also underway to get power and communications restored, and we’re bringing in needed supplies by air.”

    More than 200 people have been rescued from flood waters in North Carolina following Helene’s torrential rains. North Carolina’s search and rescue teams are being bolstered by teams from 19 states and three federal teams.

    Many areas in the mountains received more than 10 inches and as much as 29 inches of rain causing catastrophic flooding. High winds gusting up to hurricane strength also brought down trees, power lines and cell towers across the region.

    More than 700,000 people remained without power as of this morning and utility crews are responding from across the country for immediate restoration and repair efforts. Sixteen shelters housed approximately 1,100 residents last night.

    Cellular telephone service remains spotty west of I-77 due to significant infrastructure damage. Telecommunications partners have activated Disaster Roaming, which allows any phone on any cellular network to access any available network to connect to. Telephone service providers are working to restore communications across the area.

    “The State Emergency Response Team is working around the clock responding to severe impacts from Helene’s devastation. We are grateful for our local, state and federal partners and their teamwork to help North Carolinians hit hard by this storm,” said NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray. “Please remain aware of hazards and follow directions from local officials to protect life and safety.”

    Across North Carolina, 29 counties and 52 towns and cities have issued States of Emergency, in addition to the statewide State of Emergency declared by Governor Cooper. Governor Cooper yesterday requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government for North Carolina for 39 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for federal Public Assistance and Individual Assistance in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.

    As of Saturday morning, about 418 state-maintained roads remained closed, mostly due to flooding. Across the area, 11 landslides have been reported. This includes major closures on Interstates 26 and 40 around Asheville, plus dozens of locations along several U.S. and N.C. highway routes.

    State transportation officials continue to urge residents to avoid traveling in western North Carolina, and to consider all roads in that region closed due to damage from the storm. People should go to DriveNC.gov for the latest conditions on roads impacted by Hurricane Helene. Never drive through standing water or go around barricades and road closure signs.

    North Carolina residents should call 911 only for emergencies and dial 211 for other types of information. Up-to-date information on local conditions, shelters, traffic, power outages and resources is available at ReadyNC.gov and from county government social media.

    WASHINGTON, DC – Recognizing tennis great Billie Jean King’s groundbreaking contributions both on and off the court, President Joe Biden signed legislation into law this week honoring Billie Jean King, 80, as the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

    U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) cosponsored bipartisan legislation (S. 2861) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Billie Jean King, a tennis legend and American icon who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island in 1987 and presented with her official Hall of Fame ring in 2015.  

    Senator Reed congratulated King, stating: “A champion on and off the court, Billie Jean King was known for having a great serve and serving as a great role model and advancing equality.  She transcends sports and is someone who has blazed a trail and leveled the playing field to give others more opportunities than she herself had.  I congratulate her for earning this well-deserved achievement and I know she’ll continue to serve as an ambassador for the sport and an inspiration for future generations.”

    Throughout her career, Billie Jean King’s outstanding play and groundbreaking leadership and advocacy helped advance equal rights for women in athletics, education, and society at large. King was instrumental in securing equal prize money in men’s and women’s tennis at the U.S. Open, spearheaded the formation of the Women’s Tennis Association, and brought worldwide attention to pay equality throughout her career and in her “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs.

    The U.S. Open, which began in 1881 as a men’s-only game on grass courts in Newport, Rhode Island, is now held annually in Flushing, Queens, at the U.S. Tennis Association’s (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Thanks in large part to the unrelenting activism of Billie Jean King, the U.S. Open became the first sporting event to offer equal prize money to female and male competitors.

    Over the course of her career, King captured 39 Grand Slam tennis titles in singles (12), doubles (16) and mixed doubles (11).

    Commissioned by Congress, the Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded as an expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions to society.  Prior to Billie Jean King earning the award this year, it had been bestowed upon several individual athletes, including Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Roberto Clemente, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, Willie O’Ree, Greg LeMond, Larry Doby, Joe Louis, as well as the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

    I have an unwavering commitment to the security of Israel. I will always support Israel’s right to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. 

    President Biden and I do not want to see conflict in the Middle East escalate into a broader regional war.     SENDAI REGION, Japan  –  

    The U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific-Asia traveled to the Sendai region of Japan on a mission to honor the victims and survivors of the earthquake and tsunami disaster that occurred on March 11, 2011, bringing with them the same spirit of hope and solidarity that first united them with the community 13 years ago.

    The band, along with The Greatlanders Jazz Band from Elmendorf Air Base in Alaska, visited the area to bring hope and unity through music as part of Operation Tomodachi, the Japanese word for “friendship”. Operation Tomodachi occurred between 12 March to 4 May, 2011, as a disaster relief imitative following the 9.0 Tokohu earthquake and subsequent tsumani that struck the eastern coast of Japan. The effort involved more than 24,000 U.S. military service members from all branches of service. The U.S. Air Force Bands played a significant role in boosting morale during and after this initiative by offering concerts for those affected and brought a ray of hope amidst a historical disaster.

    The band performed in Kabanomachi Elementary School in August, 2011, where the gymnasium had been converted into a shelter for families displaced by the disaster. Thirteen years later and the band retraced their steps in the Sendai region, returning to Kabannomachi Elementary to play once more, their hearts filled with memories of resilience, loss, and the unbreakable bond formed with local residents during those critical days.

    Masato Yagi, U.S. Band of the Pacific-Asia community relations specialist for the past 25 years, coordinated the band’s presence at both the initial performance in 2011 and the most recent concert in 2024.

    “Many people flocked to the Sendai area to provide disaster relief immediately following the tsunami, and the Band of the Pacific-Asia wanted to help in our own way by bringing music to cheer up dislocated people,” Yagi said. “This most recent performance was special because it was the first time we have returned since that initial concert. We want to let the people here know that we still care.”  

    This visit was more than just a performance—it was a heartfelt tribute to the people who had lost so much, and a reminder that they were never forgotten. As they played, familiar notes filled the gymnasium once again, the music was a reminder not just of a tragedy, but of the enduring friendship between the U.S. and Japan. The band’s return was an affirmation that the compassion and solidarity shown in the immediate aftermath of the disaster had not faded with time.

    Operation Tomodachi was always about more than providing aid to mission partners and to neighbors; it was evidence of the continual effort to build a bridge between two nations, and performances such as these reinforce that lasting connection. The band’s performance serves as to remind people that in the face of unimaginable tragedy, friendship and support can endure, transcending time, distance, and culture. This spirit of remembrance and hope continues to resonate throughout the connection between the U.S. and Japan, growing with each effort.

    BISMARCK, N.D. – The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced it awarded a $61,492,477 contract to Korte Construction Company for the construction and renovation of a building for use as an Aircraft Maintenance Facility to accommodate the Disaster Resiliency Program mission. The work is expected to be completed on October 8, 2026, and will be performed at Grand Forks Air Force Base (GFAFB).

    “While it may have seemed unlikely in 2010, operations at Grand Forks Air Force Base continue to grow, and improvements and growth go hand in hand,” said U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC). “This contract is a welcome development to renovate the Aircraft Maintenance Facility and ensure our airmen have a modern building to meet the needs of today’s threats.”

    Cramer has used his seat on SASC to support military installations and defense ecosystem partnerships in North Dakota. In August, Cramer flipped the switch to bring the Space Development Agency (SDA) Operations Center North online at GFAFB, participated in a Grand Forks Base Retention Committee meeting, toured the University of North Dakota (UND) National Security Corridor, and announced new Navy personnel at GFAFB. Cramer also joined E-Space CEO Greg Wyler in meeting with UND faculty and SDA staff to discuss workforce development and initiatives, and announced educational initiatives between SDA and UND.

    The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Francis Fonseca, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belize. The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister exchanged views on Small Island Developing States and the implementation of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index. They also discussed regional issues, including Haiti and the bilateral relations between Belize and Guatemala.

    The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The Secretary-General highlighted Egypt’s important regional role, in particular its political and humanitarian role in support of the people of Gaza.

    The Secretary-General and the Minister also discussed the situation in Libya, Sudan and the Horn of Africa, and agreed on the importance of political dialogue to resolve ongoing conflicts.
