  • MIL-OSI Security: Lansdowne Station — Ground search continues in Pictou County in support of ongoing missing persons investigation

    Ground search efforts were underway today and are planned for tomorrow (June 1) in the area of Gairloch Rd., Lansdowne Station, as the missing persons investigation into the disappearance of Lilly and Jack Sullivan continues.

    More than 75 trained searchers from ground search and rescue organizations, including, Colchester County, Pictou County, East Hants, Halifax, Strait Area, Springhill and Pugwash were engaged today in an effort to advance the ongoing investigation and locate Lilly and Jack.

    Searchers focused on specific areas around Gairloch Rd. and the nearby pipeline, where a boot print was previously located.

    We continue to ask that the public avoid the search area to allow trained searchers to do their work.

    Any future searches will be determined based on the course of the investigation.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Forecasters expect a busy 2025 hurricane season – a storm scientist explains why and what meteorologists are watching

    U.S. forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are expecting an above-normal 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, with 13 to 19 named storms, and 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes.

    But, how do they know what’s likely to happen months in the future?

    I’m an atmospheric scientist who studies extreme weather. Let’s take a look at what Atlantic hurricane forecasts are based on and why those forecasts can shift during the season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

    What goes into a seasonal forecast

    Think of the preseason hurricane forecast as the 30,000-foot view: It can’t predict if or when a storm will hit a particular location, but it can offer insight into how many storms are likely to form throughout the entire Atlantic, and how active the season overall might be.

    These outlooks rely heavily on two large-scale climate factors.

    The first is the sea surface temperature in areas where tropical cyclones tend to form and grow. Hurricanes draw their energy from warm ocean water. So when the Atlantic is unusually warm, as it has been in recent years, it provides more fuel for storms to form and intensify.

    Once water temperatures are 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius), hurricanes can form. Most of the Gulf was above that by late May 2025.

    The second key ingredient that meteorologists have their eye on is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which forecasters refer to as ENSO. ENSO is a climate cycle that shifts every few years between three main phases: El Niño, La Niña, and a neutral space that lives somewhere in between.

    During El Niño, winds over the Atlantic high up in the troposphere – roughly 25,000 to 40,000 feet – strengthen and can disrupt storms and hurricanes. La Niña, on the other hand, tends to reduce these winds, making it easier for storms to form and grow. When you look over the historical hurricane record, La Niña years have tended to be busier than their El Niño counterparts, as we saw from 2020 through 2023.

    We’re in the neutral phase as the 2025 hurricane season begins, and probably will be for at least a few more months. That means upper-level winds aren’t particularly hostile to hurricanes, but they’re not exactly rolling out the red carpet either.

    At the same time, sea surface temperatures are running warmer than the 30-year average, but not quite at the record-breaking levels seen in some recent seasons.

    Taken together, these conditions point to a moderately above-average hurricane season.

    It’s important to emphasize that these factors merely load the dice, tilting the odds toward more or fewer storms, but not guaranteeing an outcome. A host of other variables influence whether a storm actually forms, how strong it becomes, and whether it ever threatens land.

    The smaller influences forecasters can’t see yet

    Once hurricane season is underway, forecasters start paying close attention to shorter-term influences.

    These subseasonal factors evolve quickly enough that they don’t shape the entire season. However, they can noticeably raise or lower the chances for storms developing in the coming two to four weeks.

    One factor is dust lofted from the Sahara Desert by strong winds and carried from east to west across the Atlantic.

    These dust plumes tend to suppress hurricanes by drying out the atmosphere and reducing sunlight that reaches the ocean surface. Dust outbreaks are next-to-impossible to predict months in advance, but satellite observations of growing plumes can give forecasters a heads-up a couple weeks before the dust reaches the primary hurricane development region off the coast of Africa.

    Dust blowing in from the Sahara Desert can tamp down hurricane activities by shading the ocean over the main development region for hurricanes and drying out the atmosphere, just off the African coast. This plume spread over 2,000 miles in June 2020.

    Another key ingredient that doesn’t go into seasonal forecasts but becomes important during the season are African easterly waves. These “waves” are clusters of thunderstorms that roll off the West African coast, tracking from east to west across the ocean. Most major storms in the Atlantic basin, especially in the peak months of August and September, can trace their origins back to one of these waves.

    Forecasters monitor strong waves as they begin their westward journey across the Atlantic, knowing they can provide some insight about potential risks to U.S. interests one to two weeks in advance.

    Also in this subseasonal mix is the Madden–Julian Oscillation. The MJO is a wave-like pulse of atmospheric activity that moves slowly around the tropics every 30 to 60 days. When the MJO is active over the Atlantic, it enhances the formation of thunderstorms associated with hurricanes. In its suppressed phase, storm activity tends to die down. The MJO doesn’t guarantee storms – or a lack of them – but it turns up or down the odds. Its phase and position can be tracked two or three weeks in advance.

    Lastly, forecasters will talk about the Loop Current, a deep river of warm water that flows from the Caribbean into the Gulf of Mexico.

    When storms pass over the Loop Current or its warm eddies, they can rapidly intensify because they are drawing energy from not just the warm surface water but from warm water that’s tens of meters deep. The Loop Current has helped power several historic Gulf storms, including Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Ida in 2021.

    The Loop Current stretched well into the Gulf in May 2022. The scale, in meters, shows the maximum depth at which temperatures were 78 F (26 C) or greater.

    But the Loop Current is always shifting. Its strength and location in early summer may look very different by late August or September.

    Combined, these subseasonal signals help forecasters fine-tune their outlooks as the season unfolds.

    Where hurricanes form shifts over the months

    Where storms are most likely to form and make landfall also changes as the pages of the calendar turn.

    In early summer, the Gulf of Mexico warms up faster than the open Atlantic, making it a notable hotspot for early-season tropical storm development, especially in June and July. The Texas coast, Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle often face a higher early-season risk than locations along the Eastern seaboard.

    These are generally the busiest areas during each month of hurricane season, but that doesn’t mean hurricanes won’t make landfall elsewhere.

    By August and September, the season reaches its peak. This is when those waves moving off the coast of Africa become a primary source of storm activity. These long-track storms are sometimes called “Cape Verde hurricanes” because they originate near the Cape Verde Islands off the African coast. While many stay over open water, others can gather steam and track toward the Caribbean, Florida or the Carolinas.

    Later in the hurricane season, storms are more likely to form in the western Atlantic or Caribbean, where waters are still warm and upper-level winds remain favorable. These late-season systems have a higher probability of following atypical paths, as Sandy did in 2012 when it struck the New York City region and Milton did in 2024 before making landfall in Florida.

    At the end of the day, the safest way to think about hurricane season is this: If you live along the coast, don’t let your guard down. Areas susceptible to hurricanes are never totally immune from hurricanes, and it only takes one to make it a dangerous – and unforgettable – season.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Kansas Small Businesses, Private Nonprofits and Residents Affected by May Storms

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low interest federal disaster loans to Kansas small businesses, private nonprofits and residents to offset physical and economic losses from the severe storm and tornado occurring May 18. The SBA issued a disaster declaration in response to a request SBA received from Gov. Laura Kelly on May 28.

    The disaster declaration covers the Kansas counties of Gove, Graham, Lane, Logan, Ness, Scott, Sheridan, Thomas and Trego.

    Businesses and nonprofits are eligible to apply for business physical disaster loans and may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

    Homeowners and renters are eligible to apply for home and personal property loans and may borrow up to $100,000 to replace or repair personal property, such as clothing, furniture, cars, and appliances. Homeowners may apply for up to $500,000 to replace or repair their primary residence.

    Applicants may be eligible for a loan increase of up to 20% of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements include insulating pipes, walls and attics, weather stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows to help protect property and occupants from future disasters.

    SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to eligible small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, nurseries and private nonprofit (PNP)organizations impacted by financial losses directly related to this disaster. The SBA is unable to provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers, except for aquaculture enterprises.

    EIDLs are for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the business or PNP did not suffer any physical damage. They may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills not paid due to the disaster.

    Interest rates are as low as 4% for businesses, 3.62% for nonprofits, and 2.81% for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not begin to accrue, and payments are not due until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement. The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition.

    “When disasters strike, SBA’s Disaster Loan Outreach Centers play a vital role in helping small businesses and their communities recover,” said Chris Stallings, associate administrator of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the SBA. “At these centers, SBA specialists assist business owners and residents with disaster loan applications and provide information on the full range of recovery programs available.”

    Beginning Tuesday, June 3, SBA customer service representatives will be on hand at the Disaster Loan Outreach Center (DLOC) to answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process and help each individual complete their application. Walk-ins are accepted, but you can schedule an in-person appointment in advance at appointment.sba.gov.

    A man has died and four others are injured after a crash on State Highway 16, Pt Chevalier last night.

    Police became aware of a car on its roof in the citybound lanes shortly after 11:05pm.

    One person had been ejected from the vehicle and another was trapped inside it, who was found to be deceased.

    Four people were taken to hospital, two in a serious condition and two in moderate condition.

    The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene, and the motorway was reopened around 3:20am.

    BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) — Chinese and foreign scientists have called on the global scientific community to unite and make greater contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by further exploring the frontiers of science and technology.

    This was announced on Saturday in Beijing at a symposium on “Sustainable Development and Inclusive Cooperation: Responsibility of the Scientific Community,” organized in honor of the 70th anniversary of the academic departments of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

    As ANC President Hou Jianguo noted, global challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, resource scarcity and food security are becoming increasingly interconnected, and the opportunities and challenges of the new technological revolution are profoundly reshaping the landscape of global sustainable development.

    He said that ANC, as a national scientific research institution of China, has been steadily enhancing its research activities in fields such as environmental conservation, life sciences, health care and energy technology for many years, exploring new ways and solutions to apply emerging technologies for sustainable development.

    Looking ahead, Hou Jianguo stressed that the CPC will continue to adhere to the principle of opening up to the outside world, and work closely with partners and leading scientists around the world to deepen international cooperation in key research areas. He assured that the CPC will also expand talent exchanges and joint training, conduct consultative assessments on sustainable development, promote open data sharing to ensure sustainability, and harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI).

    Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Sergey Chernyshev, in turn, stated that RAS gives priority attention to cooperation with China. According to him, future cooperation between RAS and ANC will be key to overcoming global challenges and strengthening bilateral relations.

    International Science Council (ISC) President Peter Gluckman noted that the ISC has become a true leader in global science not only through its research contributions but also through its strengthened partnerships and commitment to science as a global endeavor.

    Moscow, May 31 /Xinhua/ — The Russian government has approved amendments to the regulations on conducting an exam in Russian as a foreign language, Russian history and the fundamentals of Russian legislation for foreigners. This was reported on Saturday in the Telegram channel of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

    According to the amendments, in particular, it is envisaged that the examination versions in Russian as a foreign language, Russian history and the fundamentals of Russian legislation will be updated monthly, and that the examination versions will no longer be made publicly available.

    Currently, foreign citizens planning to work in Russia are required to confirm their proficiency in the Russian language, knowledge of Russian history and the basics of Russian legislation. The relevant exam can be taken in all regions of the country at one of the 92 authorized government agencies, the list of which has been approved by the Russian government. –0–

    Cantwell, Colleagues Urge Additional Funding to Keep Communities Safe
    WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, joined 29 Senate Democratic colleagues in urging the Senate Committee on Appropriations to fund the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program at a minimum of $270 million for Fiscal Year 2026.
    In Fiscal Year 2024, six police departments in Washington state received a total of $3.75M to hire 31 police officers.
    Amid a nationwide shortage of police officers, the COPS Hiring Program is critical for keeping communities safe and reducing taxpayer costs related to crime by providing funding directly to law enforcement agencies to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
    “The COPS Hiring Program represents a fiscally responsible solution to ensure that our communities remain safe. CHP provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire additional career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts,” the lawmakers wrote.
    “When officers establish a presence on their patrols using community-policing principles, they can develop positive relationships with the communities they serve.  In turn, these relationships increase law enforcement’s ability to solve local crimes and resolve public safety problems,” the lawmakers continued. “This proactive approach to policing prevents crime from occurring, saving taxpayers the high societal costs associated with crime, incarceration, and services for victims.”
    Sen. Cantwell is a longtime champion of the COPS program and the Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) program, which help equip and enable local law enforcement to address drug trafficking.
    The National Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association support the Senators’ funding request.

    As you consider funding levels for Fiscal Year 2026, we urge you to fund the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program at a minimum of $270 million.
    The COPS Hiring Program represents a fiscally responsible solution to ensure that our communities remain safe. CHP provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire additional career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts. When officers establish a presence on their patrols using community-policing principles, they can develop positive relationships with the communities they serve.  In turn, these relationships increase law enforcement’s ability to solve local crimes and resolve public safety problems.  This proactive approach to policing prevents crime from occurring, saving taxpayers the high societal costs associated with crime, incarceration, and services for victims.
    To date, the COPS Office has been appropriated more than $20 billion to advance community policing including grants awarded to more than 15,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring and redeployment of more than 136,000 officers. In 2024, the program awarded 235 grants across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In total, the program allowed for the funding of 1193 officer positions. COPS Hiring plays an essential role in our federal government’s support for local law enforcement and should therefore receive the highest possible level of funding.
    We are supported in this request by law enforcement organizations including the National Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association.  We appreciate the hard work and leadership that you have shown on these issues.     “For six months, states have been waiting to break ground on scores of projects, held back only by the Commerce Department’s bureaucratic delays,” wrote the Senators in a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and President Trump. “If states are forced to redo or rework their plans, they will not only miss this year’s construction season but next year’s as well, delaying broadband deployment by years. That’s why we urge the Administration to move swiftly to approve state plans, and release the $42 billion allocated to the states by the BEAD Program.”
    In the innovation economy, universal access to high-speed internet is essential for the nation’s future economic growth and to ensure that some 25 million Americans will not be denied the opportunity to fully participate in and contribute to that growth. And, in addition to excluding millions of citizens, lack of broadband access also puts our nation further behind in the race with China, putting at risk our ability to compete in AI, advanced robotics, and semiconductor manufacturing. The BEAD program has allocated $1.2 billion to the State of Washington.
    “High-speed, reliable, and scalable connectivity is essential for jobs, education, and telehealth.  It’s also the backbone for the advanced industries of today and tomorrow,” the Senators wrote. “AI systems require massive volumes of data and low-latency networks to operate effectively. Additional delays and onerous changes to the program at this stage threaten to further stall urgently needed deployment and leave communities behind.

    Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) – The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is worsening as the war intensifies. According to the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric de la Rivière, the situation remains particularly dire in the town of El Fasher and the Abu Shouk refugee camp. Both locations are besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are constantly shelling them.The situation is also critical in South Kordofan and West Kordofan. According to the International Organization for Migration, around 2,800 people, mostly women and children, fled the renewed fighting in the town of Dibebad last week in South Kordofan.     TEHRAN, May 31 (Xinhua) — Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) chief Mohammad Eslami said on Saturday that there has been “some progress” in the proxy talks on the nuclear program between his country and the United States, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.

    He made the remarks at a national conference in the northern province of Mazandaran, referring to ongoing Oman-facilitated indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions against the latter.

    As Eslami pointed out, although some progress has been made in indirect talks with the United States, some American officials continue to talk about Iran’s zero enrichment level, and such statements, in his words, are just rhetoric of “enemies aimed at appeasing Israel.”

    Speaking about the production of nuclear electricity in Iran, he noted that the country has a 1,000 MW nuclear power plant in the southern province of Bushehr, which generated more than 7 billion kWh of electricity during the previous Iranian calendar year that ended on March 20, 2025.

    M. Eslami also specified that by 2028, the country’s total nuclear power capacity will reach 3,000 MW, indicating that Iran has allocated sites for the construction of two nuclear power plants in the northern and southern parts of the country.

    The head of the AEOI said that Iran plans to generate 20,000 MW of nuclear electricity by 2041 and stressed that the radiopharmaceuticals produced in the country are not inferior to their foreign counterparts.

    Since April, Iran and the United States have held five rounds of proximity talks: three in the Omani capital Muscat and two in Rome.

    In recent days, US officials have repeatedly demanded that Iran completely stop enriching uranium, to which Tehran has responded with a resolute refusal. –0–

    GAZA, May 31 (Xinhua) — Palestinian Hamas movement on Saturday said it has conveyed to mediators its response to the recent ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip put forward by U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff.

    “After holding a round of national consultations and out of deep responsibility to our people and their suffering,” Hamas sent the mediators its response to Witkoff’s latest proposal, the movement said in a statement.

    “Under the agreement, ten living Israeli hostages held by Hamas will be released, and the bodies of 18 dead hostages will also be handed over in exchange for an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners,” the movement said.

    It added that the proposal was aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and ensuring the flow of aid to the enclave’s population.

    Hamas politburo member Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday that the movement had received Israel’s response to the US proposal.

    According to him, Israel’s position does not take into account the basic demands of the Palestinians, including a complete cessation of hostilities and the lifting of the long-term blockade of Gaza. -0-

    overnor Kathy Hochul today announced four appointments to the newly restructured Board of Directors for the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC), which oversees the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), Nassau County’s only public hospital. The appointments coincide with the implementation of a new state law, taking effect June 1, 2025, that significantly reforms NHCC governance, enhances state oversight and sets a path forward for strengthening NUMC’s financial and operational stability. Governor Hochul also designated Stuart Rabinowitz, Esq., former President of Hofstra University and a longtime leader in higher education and public policy, as Chair of the Board.

    “NUMC is a vital lifeline for so many on Long Island, and today we are taking long-overdue steps to ensure it has the leadership and oversight it needs to thrive,” Governor Hochul said. “These new appointments, and the new authority granted to the state and NIFA, will help ensure accountability, responsible fiscal management and high-quality care for the communities NUMC serves.     About the Governance Reforms Taking Effect June 1:

    • The NHCC Board of 11 members will include six appointed by the Governor (one each upon recommendation of the Assembly Speaker and Senate Temporary President), two by the Nassau County Executive, two by the majority of the Nassau County Legislature, and one by the minority.
    • The Governor will designate the Board Chair.
    • The Nassau County Executive will no longer have approval authority over the NHCC CEO.
    • The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) will have enhanced oversight, including the power to approve NHCC contracts exceeding $1 million and, under specific conditions, the authority to declare a control period over NHCC.
    • NHCC is required to conduct and submit a study by December 1, 2026, exploring options to strengthen NUMC.

    Governor Hochul’s two remaining appointments, one each recommended by the Speaker of the Assembly and the Temporary President of the Senate, will be announced in coordination with legislative leaders. Once the appointments take effect on June 1, the new board is expected to call a special meeting to set NHCC on a path toward stability.

    Stuart Rabinowitz is Senior Counsel at Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone, LLP, where he focuses on state and federal litigation, constitutional law, civil rights, and education law. He served for over 20 years as President of Hofstra University, where he significantly expanded the institution’s academic footprint, including the creation of a medical school, and raised its national profile by hosting three U.S. presidential debates. A former constitutional law professor and nationally recognized policy leader, he holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from Columbia Law School and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His decades of experience leading large public-serving institutions make him uniquely qualified to help guide NUMC’s revitalization.

    Amy Flores is an experienced executive with more than 15 years in financial services, public administration, and economic development. She currently serves as Community Manager at JPMorgan Chase, where she leads initiatives focused entirely on collaborating with local leaders across sectors to understand and address community challenges. She previously served as Executive Director of the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs and has held senior roles in banking. Amy serves on the boards of CARECEN and Círculo de la Hispanidad and has been recognized by City & State and Long Island Business News as one of Long Island’s most influential civic leaders. Amy holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Hofstra University and Certificate of Completion with Honors from Hofstra University’s ABA Accredited Paralegal Studies Program.

    Dean Mihaltses, RPh, BPS, MPA

    Dean Mihaltses is a veteran health care executive and licensed pharmacist with over 40 years of experience in hospital operations, public health policy, and clinical pharmacy services. He most recently served as Interim CEO and COO at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, where he managed hospital operations, emergency preparedness and strategic initiatives in one of the city’s busiest public hospitals. Earlier roles included Director of Pharmacy Services at Jacobi & Elmhurst hospitals and health care consultant for skilled nursing and developmental disability facilities. He is a Fellow of several national professional associations and continues to mentor future health professionals.

    Lisa Warren

    Lisa Warren is President of Placid, LLC, a Long Island-based real estate investment and management firm, and a civic leader with a dedicated record of leadership and engagement, including as a Commissioner on the Nassau County Planning Commission. With over 30 years of experience in business and philanthropy, she supports youth development, education and the arts across Nassau County. She is especially active in expanding access to youth sports and serves on the boards of the Long Island Children’s Museum and Ice Hockey in Harlem. She holds degrees from Hofstra and Duke Universities and a diploma from the French Culinary Institute.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Funding boost to save Grassland Earless Dragon

    Found only in the Canberra region, the Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon is one of the Territory’s most critically endangered species.

    In brief:

    • The Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon is facing extinction.
    • A significant ACT Government investment will help conserve the local species.

    New ACT Government funding will help prevent extinction of the Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon.

    The unique lizard is found only in the Canberra region. It is one of the Territory’s most critically endangered species.

    The Government will invest $4.5 million to support a recovery plan to help conserve the species. This builds on $2.7 million already invested since 2020.

    How will the funds be used?

    The additional $4.5 million will support:

    • $2.4 million for program operations. This includes ACT Government staffing to manage the Tidbinbilla breeding colony and deliver recovery actions.
    • $2 million to expand the breeding colony at Melbourne Zoo. The aim is for up to 200 breeding individuals.
    • $120,000 for ongoing release of Dragons bred in captivity back into the wild.

    What has been done already?

    The additional investment builds on previous government investment starting in 2020. This has been for:

    • habitat restoration
    • trial reintroductions
    • population viability modelling
    • cutting-edge genetic matchmaking to ensure a healthy, genetically diverse population.

    The ACT Government has been running a captive breeding program.

    The new funding will help expand recovery efforts.

    Why is Melbourne Zoo involved?

    Melbourne Zoo has a captive colony of Dragons.

    Improving the species’ genetic diversity is key to ensuring its recovery.

    Genetic analysis and matchmaking programs are essential to address inbreeding.

    As such, the ongoing partnership with the zoo is crucial.

    Melbourne Zoo provides animals for release and research.

    It has also shared expertise in husbandry and breeding techniques.

    What else should I know about the Dragon?

    The Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon measures just 15cm and weighs 5–9 grams.

    It was only recognised as a distinct species in 2019. It is now listed as critically endangered.

    The Dragon population has declined dramatically due to:

    • habitat loss
    • fragmentation
    • altered fire and grazing regimes
    • climate impacts.

    Wild populations are now found only in:

    • the Majura Valley
    • the Jerrabomberra Valley
    • parts of Queanbeyan.

    The new investment will ensure continued conservation action.

    It aims to give the Dragon a real chance to thrive again in Canberra grasslands.

    ABUJA, May 31 (Xinhua) — The death toll from devastating floods triggered by heavy rains in Nigeria’s central Niger state has risen to at least 151, local authorities said Saturday.

    Ibrahim Hussaini, head of operations at the Niger State Disaster Management Agency, told Xinhua by telephone that more than 50 more bodies were found in Mokwa district, where the disaster occurred, on Saturday.

    I. Hussaini said 11 victims were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. “So far, 318 people have been affected, as well as at least 503 households.

    He added that the search for bodies continues, with local divers and volunteers assisting in the rescue operation.

    Heavy rains on Thursday night caused chaos in Mokwa, flooding and washing away dozens of residential buildings, some of which still had people inside, I. Hussaini told reporters on Thursday.

    Earlier this week, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency issued a forecast warning of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the central part of the country, including Niger State. The agency said more rainfall was expected in the next 24 hours, with localized showers also possible in the southern region. –0–

    CANBERRA, May 31 (Xinhua) — Australian Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell on Saturday called U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to double tariffs on steel and aluminum an “unreasonable” act of economic “self-harm.”

    On Friday, D. Trump announced that he plans to raise the tariff rate on steel and aluminum imports to the United States from 25 percent to 50 percent starting June 4 to protect American industry from foreign competition.

    Commenting on the statement, D. Farrell stressed that Australia’s position remains “consistent and clear” and the federal government will continue to advocate strongly for the removal of the relevant tariffs.

    “These tariffs are unjustified and not an act of friendship,” the Australian minister said in a statement. “They are an act of economic self-harm that will only hurt consumers and businesses that rely on free and fair trade,” he added.

    Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose Labor Party won a second straight general election on May 3 by a landslide, in turn described Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs in April as “an unfriendly act.”

    The US administration decided in March not to exempt Australia from steel and aluminium tariffs. At the time, Mr Albanese also said that the decision was contrary to the “strong friendship” between the two countries. –0–

  • MIL-OSI USA: Jayapal, Randall, Dexter Conduct Unannounced Oversight Visit at Northwest Detention Center

    TACOMA, WA — Today, Congresswomen Emily Randall (WA-06), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), and Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) conducted an unannounced Congressional oversight visit at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC). 

    Officials at the detention center allowed the Members to tour the facility one hour after they arrived. Despite repeated attempts, the Members were only permitted to meet with two detained individuals, which raises concerns over the medical care and legal counsel available in this detention center.

    This visit follows a troubling pattern: recent ICE raids targeting labor leaders, multiple reports over the past few years citing poor compliance with medical and sanitary standards at the facility, and actions by the Trump Administration that undermine Congressional oversight authority.

    Following the visit, the Members and Roxana Norouzi, Executive Director of OneAmerica, addressed members of the press to share their experience. 

    “Today was a stark reminder of the pain, chaos, and confusion caused at the hands of Donald Trump — and what happens when policy is developed from a source of hate, instead of fact,” said Congresswoman Randall, a member of the House Oversight Committee. “The American people are being told one thing, but my eyes saw another: the people inside this facility are our neighbors, people who we would see in the community, parents, and siblings. We spoke with a legal permanent resident who is being detained on a 20 year old crime for which he served his time. This is an injustice, it’s unconstitutional, and it’s being funded on the backs of taxpayers. We must continue to show up — unannounced — and demand answers.” 

    “Today I visited the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma for an unannounced inspection. While I am disappointed that the facility staff would not allow me to speak with more detained individuals, I was able to speak with two detained persons,” said Congresswoman Jayapal, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement. “One woman has been in this country for 20 years and was detained less than a week before she was to be married to a U.S. citizen. Another man has been here 31 years as a legal permanent resident, is a proud member of the Machinists Union, and is married to a U.S. citizen with three U.S. citizen children. These individuals could not understand why they were in detention, why this country they live is treating them this way, and they fear terribly for their families. I remain incredibly concerned about the entire immigration detention system, which is supposed to be a civil system but is instead functioning as a massive for-profit prison that utilizes billions of taxpayer dollars to jail people who should not be there. It is being weaponized by the Trump administration to carry out mass disappearances and deportations of people of all statuses like the lawful permanent residents held in this facility and undocumented immigrants who are married to US citizens — many of whom are not ‘the worst of the worst’ like Trump said he would go after, but instead are people who were contributing members of our community. I will continue to conduct this oversight and work to build a humane and fair immigration system that benefits Americans while protecting the rights of all  immigrants.”

    “Donald Trump is lying to the American people. He is dehumanizing immigrants who came here for a better life—only to face cruelty and injustice—funded by your tax dollars. Inside the Northwest Detention Center, we were not allowed to speak with or see most individuals detained here, and that should concern every one of us. What are they hiding?” said Congresswoman Dexter (OR-03), a critical care and lung physician. “Trump is detaining our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones without guaranteed due process and no accountability. That’s not American; that’s authoritarianism.” 

    “No matter where we come from, the color of our skin, or our immigration status we all deserve to live in a country where our families are together, where we feel safe, and where our rights are upheld. Unfortunately, we are witnessing attacks on immigrants and working people across the country that are violating these core values,” said Roxana Norouzi, Executive Director of OneAmerica. “This Administration has pushed the limits of their executive power, snatching, and disappearing our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones – detaining them in centers like this one. At times, with no due process and no accountability. We want to ensure our community members who are detained are treated humanely. They need access to legal counsel and, at a minimum, to understand the immigration process while detained. Our legal system requires fairness and respect for due process, with increased transparency and accountability of for-profit detention centers like this one.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Murder investigation underway in South London

    A murder investigation has been launched following the fatal stabbing of a woman in Croydon.

    Police were called to Frith Road at 09:07hrs on Saturday, 31 May following reports of a stabbing. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, who treated two injured people at the scene.

    A woman in her 20s sadly died at the scene.

    A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in hospital.

    A scene is currently in place near to the location and those in the area can expect to see a police presence throughout the weekend.

    Detectives are in the early stages of establishing what has happened, but initial enquiries suggest the incident begun at a nearby address, before escalating onto Frith Road.

    Superintendent Mitch Carr, who leads local policing in Croydon, said:

    “This is a tragic incident where a young woman has lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones.

    “I especially want to thank the members of the public, including a teenage boy, who bravely tried to help the victim.

    “We believe that this was an isolated incident, but understand that this news will shock the local community. Officers will remain in the area over the coming days and we would ask anyone who has concerns to speak with them.”

    BRUSSELS, May 31 (Xinhua) — The European Commission (EC) on Saturday sharply criticized the United States’ decision to raise tariffs on steel imports from 25 percent to 50 percent, warning that the move could trigger swift retaliatory measures from Europe.

    “We deeply regret the announced increase,” an EC spokesman said in an email, noting that the decision “increases uncertainty in the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.”

    US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 percent. The American leader on the social network Truth Social reported that the new tariffs will come into effect on June 4.

    The EC noted that the US actions undermine ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated agreement. In April, the EU suspended its countermeasures to create space for dialogue. However, it has now signaled its readiness to retaliate.

    “The EU stands ready to introduce countermeasures, including in response to the latest tariff hike by the US,” the spokesman said, adding that the EC was finalizing consultations on the expanded measures. Both the existing and additional EU measures would come into force on July 14 or earlier “if circumstances so require.” –0–
