Volume and price statistics of external merchandise trade in May 2025
In May 2025, the volume of Hong Kong’s total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 13.4% and 16.5% respectively over May 2024.
Comparing the first five months of 2025 with the same period in 2024, the volume of Hong Kong’s total exports of goods and imports of goods both increased by 10.4%.
Comparing the three-month period ending May 2025 with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the volume of total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 9.7% and 11.3% respectively.
Changes in volume of external merchandise trade are derived from changes in external merchandise trade value with the effect of price changes discounted.
Comparing May 2025 with May 2024, the prices of total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 1.8% and 1.9% respectively.
As regards price changes in the first five months of 2025 over the same period in 2024, the prices of total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 1.9% and 2.0% respectively.
Price changes in external merchandise trade are reflected by changes in unit value indices of external merchandise trade, which are compiled based on average unit values or, for certain commodities, specific price data.
The terms of trade index is derived from the ratio of price index of total exports of goods to that of imports of goods. Compared with the same periods in 2024, the index decreased by 0.1% in May 2025, whereas it remained virtually unchanged in the first five months of 2025.
Changes in the unit value and volume of total exports of goods by main destination are shown in Table 1.
Comparing May 2025 with May 2024, increases were recorded for the total export volume to Taiwan (48.0%), Vietnam (39.5%), India (37.6%) and the mainland of China (the Mainland) (15.9%). On the other hand, the total export volume to the USA decreased by 20.7%.
Over the same period of comparison, the total export prices to Taiwan (5.5%), the USA (1.9%), the Mainland (1.4%) and Vietnam (1.2%) increased. On the other hand, the total export prices to India decreased by 2.2%.
Changes in the unit value and volume of imports of goods by main supplier are shown in Table 2.
Comparing May 2025 with May 2024, increases were recorded for the import volume from Vietnam (70.1%), Taiwan (29.6%), the Mainland (17.1%) and Singapore (12.3%). On the other hand, the import volume from Korea decreased by 10.5%.
Over the same period of comparison, the import prices from Korea (4.5%), Singapore (2.3%), Taiwan (2.3%) and the Mainland (1.2%) increased. On the other hand, the import prices from Vietnam decreased by 0.3%.

The Government has the obligation to establish an alternative framework for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships, following the final decision by the Court of Final Appeal (CFA) and the CFA’s ruling is legally binding.
Chief Executive John Lee made the statement in reply to reporters’ questions before attending an Executive Council meeting this morning.
“In the case of Sham Tsz-kit v Secretary for Justice, the Court of Final Appeal ruled that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has a positive obligation to establish an alternative framework for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.
“The decision made by the CFA is final. The Hong Kong SAR Government cannot contravene the determination of the CFA, and must take appropriate follow-up action.”
Mr Lee emphasised that the CFA’s ruling has the force of law and is legally binding on the Government, adding that the Government must not act in violation of the court’s ruling.
Furthermore, the Chief Executive pointed out that under the Basic Law, the Government is responsible for proposing and introducing bills, while the Legislative Council’s duties are to scrutinise, amend, and vote to pass or reject the bills introduced by the authorities.
He stated that under the Basic Law, the Judiciary exercises independent adjudication power and LegCo exercises legislative power, with both of them performing their respective constitutional roles.
“The Hong Kong SAR Government respects the Judiciary and the LegCo in exercising their respective powers under the Basic law.”
In addition to noting that the alternative framework now proposed by the Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Bureau (CMAB) complies with the CFA’s judgement, Mr Lee explained that it was formulated by the CMAB after thorough research and full consideration of legal advice.
“The Hong Kong SAR Government will make every effort to facilitate LegCo’s scrutiny of the bill introduced by the CMAB, assist LegCo in completing the scrutiny expeditiously, and respect LegCo’s final decision,” he added.

According to the statistics, 1,016 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with a total amount of US$7,365,871,000 were approved from January to June 2025. This indicates a decrease of 4.15% in the number of cases, but an increase of 126.46% in FDI amount compared to the same period of 2024.
With regard to inward investment from Mainland China, 11 cases were approved with an amount of US$100,744,000 from January to June 2025. This indicates a decrease of 45% in the number of cases, but an increase of 515.56% in the FDI amount compared to the same period of 2024.
In terms of Taiwan’s outbound investment (excluding Mainland China), 414 projects were registered from January to June 2025 with a total amount of US$18,311,147,000, indicating an increase of 20.35% in the number of cases, but an decrease of 24.29% in the amount, as compared to the same period of 2024.
As for Taiwan’s outward investment to Mainland China, 101 applications have been approved from January to June 2025, indicating a decrease of 42.61% compared to the same period of 2024. The approved investment amount is US$574,447,000, 62.86% less than the same period in 2024.

Researchers from the RUDN Medical Institute and Moscow City Polyclinic No. 2 analyzed how patients after acute myocardial infarction comply with recommendations for taking dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) — a combination of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and a P2Y12 inhibitor (ticagrelor, clopidogrel or prasugrel). The work was awarded first place in the Competition of scientific works of young scientists in the field of drug safety “LekBez 2025” at the III Russian Congress “Pharmacotherapy Safety 360°: Noli nocere!”
The study included 168 patients who demonstrated high adherence to dual antiplatelet therapy in the first 6 months after myocardial infarction and assessed how their behavior changed over the course of a year, as well as the relationship between adherence, bleeding complications of therapy and the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events.
After myocardial infarction, DAPT is critical to prevent recurrent infarctions. However, according to the study results, 43.5% of patients stopped adhering to the therapy regimen in the second half of the year, despite preferential provision of drugs in Moscow. 24.4% of patients experienced hemorrhagic complications (bleeding), which forced them to independently adjust or stop treatment. An additional problem was the rare use of the PRECISE-DAPT scale by doctors to predict bleeding, although this risk was high in 22.6% of patients when assessed in the study. These circumstances lead to a dilemma: refusal of DAPT reduces the number of bleedings, but increases the risk of recurrent infarctions. For example, non-adherent patients were hospitalized due to cardiac complications in the second half of the year more than three times more often than those who continued therapy.
“Solving this problem requires a comprehensive approach. First of all, it is necessary to implement treatment adherence monitoring by recording electronic prescriptions. This will allow doctors to track the patient’s compliance with therapy in real time and promptly adjust prescriptions. In addition, an individual approach to therapy adjustment is necessary. For example, in case of mild bleeding, it is advisable to temporarily reduce the dose of acetylsalicylic acid (19.5% of cases) or replace ticagrelor with clopidogrel (9.8%). For patients with a high risk of bleeding according to the PRECISE-DAPT scale, international recommendations provide for a reduction in the duration of DAPT to 3-6 months. It is equally important to implement continuous education among both patients and healthcare professionals. Patients need to be explained the risks associated with interrupting therapy, and doctors need to be informed about the importance of using modern bleeding risk assessment scales to prescribe the correct personalized treatment,” says Dmitry Klyuev, assistant professor at the Department of General and Clinical Pharmacology, RUDN Medical Institute.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) — A ceremony to establish a multimodal digital laboratory for the inheritance of the Manas epic culture was held recently in Atushi, Kyzylsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the prefectural administration said.
The lab was jointly established by the prefectural people’s government and Xinjiang Normal University as part of the Manas-themed International Cultural and Tourism Festival held in the prefecture from July 13 to 20.
The new laboratory will facilitate the digital preservation of materials and resources related to the epic, as well as its active dissemination through digital technologies, in order to give new impetus to this masterpiece of art, the press service said in a statement.
Vice-president of Xinjiang Normal University Liu Chenjiang noted that Manas currently faces problems such as aging heirs and limited distribution. Digital technology not only helps preserve valuable performance videos over long periods, but also allows the younger generation to immerse themselves in the charm of the epic through interactive exhibitions, VR performances and other forms.
The heroic epic “Manas” is a cycle of tales related to the life and exploits of the main character – the legendary hero Manas, the unifier of the Kyrgyz tribes. It occupies an important place in the oral folklore of the Kyrgyz. This epic poem is known as one of the three heroic epics of the national minorities of China, along with the heroic epics “King Gesar” of the Tibetan ethnic group and “Dzhangar” of the Mongolian ethnic group.
Manas was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. As far as historians know, it was passed down orally by folk artists who performed it with a unique chant rhythm before attempts were made to record it in written form.
In addition to the establishment of this laboratory and the holding of a thematic cultural festival, the XUAR authorities have taken various measures to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of the Manas epic, including organizing courses and competitions for storytellers and the entry into force of a legislative act on the preservation of the Manas epic in May of this year. -0-

An official source at the Department of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that Qatari citizens are now exempt from entry visa requirements for the Republic of Peru, for a maximum stay of 183 days, counted from the date of entry.

Indonesian rescuers found alive on Tuesday 11 people missing at sea who had survived a boat capsize in bad weather by swimming for at least six hours to the nearest island, officials said.
Two boats and dozens of rescuers hunted for those missing after the boat with 18 aboard overturned off the Mentawai Islands in the province of West Sumatra at about 11 a.m. on Monday, regional officials said.
“It was raining hard when the incident happened,” island official Rinto Wardana told Reuters. “Some of the passengers managed to swim and reach the nearest island.”
Seven had been rescued earlier, Wardana added. Ten of those on board were local government officials on a business trip to the town of Tuapejat, the boat’s destination when it left Sikakap, another small town in the Mentawai Islands. .
The Mentawai Islands consist of four main islands and many smaller ones.
Boats and ferries are a regular mode of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where accidents are caused by bad weather and lax safety standards that often allow vessels to be overloaded.
When a ferry sank this month near the tourist resort island of Bali with 65 aboard, 30 passengers survived, while 18 died and 17 went missing.

“Africa’s call for reparative justice is no longer a whisper—it is a unified demand grounded in historical truth, moral clarity and our unwavering commitment to dignity. As we implement the 2025 Theme of the Year on Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through reparations, we reaffirm our shared resolve to correct historical wrongs and injustices through restitution, healing and holistic systemic transformation.”
This powerful declaration was made by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana and the African Union Champion for Reparations, as he delivered a progress report in Malabo on the AU’s 2025 Theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.”
Addressing the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union, President Mahama stated that notable progress has been achieved by the AU Commission and Member States in implementing the theme.
He expressed particular satisfaction with the recent decision by the Executive Council to extend the focus on reparations for a decade, covering the period from 2026 to 2036.
“This undoubtedly affords us, as a Union, the opportunity to sustain the momentum for the realisation of this noble cause, as well as map out well-thought-out strategies to mobilise adequate resources to champion implementation of the theme domestically,” President Mahama stated.
President Mahama issued a call for global partnership, saying, “We call upon all nations, within and beyond Africa, to partner with us in shaping a more just and equitable world for the sons and daughters of the motherland.”
The former Ghanaian President noted the deep connection between reparations and African identity and dignity.
“Restitution to the African, therefore, is restoration of our full human dignity,” he stated, adding that the movement aims “to speak of history on African terms, of healing deep civilisational wounds and of restoring to African peoples our rightful agency in shaping our past, present and future.”
He underscored the necessity of reparations for African progress and unity, arguing, “We cannot speak of development without identity or speak of unity without acknowledging the erasure that has fractured our heritage.”
President Mahama stressed the importance of a unified African narrative on the global stage and encouraged robust partnerships, particularly with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Looking ahead, he announced that Ghana and Togo will co-sponsor a high-level event in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2025 “to further bolster efforts at achieving the justice and closure which has eluded us for centuries.”
“As we do more to correct historical wrongs, we are reasserting our full humanity. We are reaffirming our sovereignty. We are reigniting the flame of dignity that has always burned within the African soul,” assuring the Union of Ghana’s continued support for this agenda towards “The Africa We Want.”

India on Monday ordered its airlines to examine fuel switches on several Boeing models, and South Korea ordered a similar measure on Tuesday, as scrutiny intensified of fuel switch locks at the centre of an investigation into a deadly Air India crash.
The precautionary moves by India, South Korea and some airlines in other countries came despite the planemaker and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration telling airlines and regulators in recent days that the fuel switch locks on Boeing jets are safe.
A preliminary report into the Air India crash that killed 260 people found that the switches had almost simultaneously flipped from run position to cutoff shortly after takeoff.
One pilot was heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel. “The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” the report said.
The report noted a 2018 advisory from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which recommended, but did not mandate, operators of several Boeing models including the 787 to inspect the locking feature of fuel cutoff switches to ensure they could not be moved accidentally.
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it had issued an order to investigate locks on several Boeing models including 787s and 737s, after several Indian and international airlines began making their own inspections of fuel switches.
The regulator oversees the world’s third-largest and fastest-growing aviation market. Boeing planes are used by three of the country’s four largest airlines.
PRECAUTIONARY CHECKS
Some airlines around the world told Reuters they had been checking relevant switches since 2018 in accordance with the FAA advisory, including Australia’s Qantas Airways and Japan’s ANA.
Others said they had been making additional or new checks since the release of the preliminary report into the Air India crash.
Singapore Airlines SIAL.SI said on Tuesday that precautionary checks on the fuel switches of its 787 fleet, including planes used by its low-cost subsidiary Scoot, confirmed all were functioning properly.
South Korea’s transport ministry said it ordered domestic airlines on Tuesday to inspect fuel control switches in accordance with the 2018 FAA advisory.
“At that time (2018), it was a recommended measure and was not fully inspected,” the statement to media said.
Flag carrier Korean Air Lines said on Tuesday it had proactively begun inspecting fuel control switches.
Japan Airlines said it was conducting inspections in accordance with the 2018 advisory.
Over the weekend, Air India Group started checking the locking mechanism on the fuel switches of its 787 and 737 fleets and has discovered no problems yet, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday.
About half the group’s 787s have been inspected and nearly all its 737s, the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity. Inspections were set to be completed in the next day or two.
The Air India crash preliminary report said the airline had not carried out the FAA’s suggested inspections as the FAA’s 2018 advisory was not a mandate.
But it also said maintenance records showed that the throttle control module, which includes the fuel switches, was replaced in 2019 and 2023 on the plane involved in the crash.
In an internal memo on Monday, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the preliminary report found no mechanical or maintenance faults and that all required maintenance had been carried out.

At the opening of the 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), called for urgent action to bridge global financing gaps and support innovation systems that work for all.
“Digital tools and mission-driven science can accelerate SDGs delivery, but only if systems are inclusive and backed by real financing at scale,” he said, moderating a high-level Townhall session on SDGs implementation as part of ECA’s coordinating role among the UN Regional Commissions.
The session, titled Unlocking the Means of Implementation: Finance, Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs, focused on how to move from global commitments to tangible solutions. It brought together leaders from public and private sectors to examine how capital flows, technology, and policy can better support sustainable development.
With participation from Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact; Robbert Dijkgraaf, President-Elect of the International Science Council; and Robert Kirkpatrick, Chairman of the Board of the United Cities Foundation, the conversation highlighted the urgency of scaling investment, adopting alternative financing models, and building inclusive systems.
Together, the panel stressed the importance of translating innovation into real-world results, especially across Africa and other regions facing deep development disparities.
Speaking at another session on poverty eradication, Mr Gatete highlighted the need to ground policy and investment in sharper, more integrated data systems.
“We can’t end poverty if we can’t measure it accurately,” he said at the event hosted by the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the UN, UNDP, the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), and other partners. “It’s time to shift from measuring what’s convenient to measuring what matters.”
Mr Gatete pointed to ECA’s development of a prototype Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) dashboard for African countries. The platform links spatial poverty data with climate vulnerability, migration flows, peace and security trends, and subnational budget execution, providing governments with a more complete picture of where to direct resources and improve social protection.
As the forum continues, Mr Gatete and ECA are keeping Africa’s priorities on the table, advocating for fairer finance, smarter tools, and a more inclusive path to 2030.

Novel partnership takes treatment into green spaces, with a level 3 qualification available
Healthcare professionals from across Sussex are being trained to make more use of outdoor settings in treating those with poor mental health.
Less than half the population say they’ve been to the countryside or a local park recently[i].
But the NHS is turning to places like that to help with certain treatments.
Natural England is funding courses aimed at nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals from across Sussex to make more use of outdoor settings in treating those with poor mental health.
The training builds on evidence being outside can help lead to lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes[ii].
Course-goers learn a variety of skills, from being able to adapt treatments to new surroundings to using their experience and training from many years inside, outside.
By the end of the sessions, which are spread over 5 months, those attending should have the confidence and competence to work with groups in a range of outdoor settings.
The course, which carries a formal training accreditation, is suited to professionals who support children, young people and adults, including, from psychiatrists and psychologists to social and youth workers, therapists and those working in family support.
Healthcare staff have reported feeling more relaxed when outside, when not necessarily working, as well as refreshed and re-energised. It’s hoped these benefits can transfer themselves to the care they give patients.
The training is delivered by Circle of Life Rediscovery, a community interest company based in Laughton, near Lewes.
Through the workshops, the partnership between Natural England and CLR is already highlighting the need to use green spaces where we live and work to improve health and wellbeing.
Sarah Davies, Natural England’s principal adviser for partnerships in Sussex and Kent, said:
“The importance of open spaces cannot be underestimated. Nature can relax us, educate us, and help reduce anxiety and depression.
“We know there are countless benefits to connecting with nature – it makes us feel better, physically and mentally.”
Some 36 NHS staff in Sussex have done the course since 2023. It offers an ITC level 3 qualification, providing students with the necessary skills to work with individuals and groups of all ages.
The 2024 cohort of 16 health service staff recently met at Laughton Greenwood to share personal experiences of what they learned in the sessions. The group also heard from professionals with long experience in using nature to aide healthcare.
A senior nurse from Sussex who took part in the training said:
“My experience doing this course has really transformed my thinking regarding nature-based practice. I have managed to apply parts of what I learnt within my work environment and have full backing from colleagues regarding trying to utilise what I learnt.
“I never realised the true impact outdoors can have on an individual and team level and hope to see it being prescribed in the future as a treatment for certain health problems.”

This nature-based training for NHS staff coincides with a wide-ranging survey into how exposure to natural spaces positively affects people’s health, behaviour and attitude to the environment over an extended period of time.
The three-year study will involve a sample of approximately 18,000 adults across the country, in a partnership between Natural England, the University of Exeter and the Natural Environment Research Council, and developed by organisations from a range of sectors.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) — A youth delegation from Russia’s sister city of Sergiev Posad recently visited Weihai City in east China’s Shandong Province, learning about modern science and traditional culture at the Weihai Branch of Harbin Institute of Technology and an intangible cultural heritage exhibition at the city’s cultural center.
According to the Weihai City Government website, the Weihai Branch of Harbin Institute of Technology held a robotics technology seminar, where participants visited laboratories, demonstrated developments, and exchanged experiences. At the intangible cultural heritage exhibition, delegates studied in detail the technique of making sea grass houses, observed the craftsmanship of making tin inlay, admired the art of making colorful steamed buns “bobo” and the beautiful performance of the traditional dance “yangge” of Rushan City, deeply feeling the historical and cultural heritage of the region.
A spokesperson for the Weihai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office stressed the city’s intention to deepen the “sister city” cooperation model, using people-to-people and cultural exchanges to promote multilateral cooperation and create a new high of high-level openness.
Sergiev Posad, one of the famous “Golden Ring cities” of Russia and an important industrial, scientific and agricultural center of the Moscow region, established sister city relations with Weihai in September 2023. Since then, the cities have successfully held a dialogue on trade and economic cooperation “Silk Road Cities: Weihai-Sergiev Posad”, organized an exhibition “Weihai Meets Russia: Cultural Features of Sister Cities”, and implemented a series of projects in the fields of education, culture and tourism. -0-

Titled “A City That Works for All”, the five-year plan sets out a vision for a more inclusive, supportive, and understanding York.
This all-age strategy, developed through extensive co-production with neurodivergent residents, families, and local organisations, outlines three key pillars:
The strategy recognises that barriers in society are often at the root of exclusion and poorer outcomes for autistic people and those with ADHD, and these must be tackled alongside the need to improve health and care services.
It draws on findings from York’s 2025 Health Needs Assessment, which revealed significant gaps in diagnosis, long waiting lists, and high rates of co-occurring mental health conditions.
Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, said:
It’s absolutely vital that services meet everyone’s needs, including the approximately 1 in 7 neurodiverse people living in our city. Consultation on this strategy will ask all organisations, service providers and residents to support us in creating a city in which all neurodiverse people thrive and play an active part. Small changes can often make big differences”.
Michael Ash-McMahon, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) Interim Place Director for York, said:
The draft strategy is a welcome step towards creating a City that celebrates neurodiversity and reaffirms the NHS shared commitment to improving diagnosis and tackling long waiting lists for assessment. The ICB and City of York Council are eager to hear what people think of the strategy to ensure the voice of our population is heard and fully understood, before a final version is published later in the year.”

The draft strategy is now open for public consultation with feedback invited from residents, professionals, and community groups. The final version will be published in Autumn 2025.
