    US Senate News:

Monroe County’s Gillett Road Bridge Was Forced To Close In December 2023 Due To Potential Structural Failures, Cutting Off Motorists And Disrupting Commutes And Traffic Patterns For Monroe County Residents

Schumer Last Year Stood At CSX-Owned Bridge With County And Local Leaders And Personally Called On CSX To Make Repairs To Vital Crossing That Connects Ogden To Spencerport

Schumer: CSX Is Paving The Way To Reopen Vital Monroe County Bridge

After standing at Gillett Road Bridge in Monroe County last year and calling on CSX to make urgently-needed repairs, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer today announced CSX Transportation has heeded his calls to repairs to the Gillett Road Bridge, a major crossing which has been closed since December 2023 due to structural deficiencies. Schumer said the closure of the bridge, which connects the town of Ogden to the village of Spencerport, has caused significant disruption to the area, but thankfully now after months of his sustained advocacy alongside the county, CSX has agreed to start work fixing the bridge as soon as this week.

“Last year, I stood at the Gillett Road Bridge to call on CSX to come to restore this critical passageway for the Greater Rochester community. Today after months of advocacy, I’m proud to announce that CSX has heeded my calls and will pave the way to reopen this vital Monroe County corridor. Reopening this bridge will help finally relieve our families in Ogden and across the Rochester area of the headache of having to drive far out of their way on their daily commute to work, school, and ensure first responders can quickly reach their destinations,” said Senator Schumer. “I was proud to stand with Congressman Morelle, County Executive Adam Bello, and Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale to hold CSX to its obligations to fix this vital crossing for Monroe County and greatly appreciate CSX partnership on this important project. I look forward to CSX beginning repairs as soon as this week and reopening this corridor.”

Senator Schumer explained that over two years ago, the New York Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) issued a “red flag” warning to CSX for the Gillett Road Bridge upon finding severe structural weaknesses which posed an immediate threat to public safety. Although this has been a known safety issue for months, CSX delayed taking action, forcing Monroe County to close the bridge indefinitely to vehicle traffic in December, after finding that the bridge could not hold a live traffic load.

The Senator said the forced closure of this bridge has caused significant disruption to the area, inconveniencing and frustrating residents, visitors, and motorists. Its closure has been a major obstruction necessitating traffic detours that not only impact residents who live on either side of the bridge but impact the efficient movement of children traveling to and from the Spencerport school campus, emergency or public safety vehicles, shoppers to the Spencerport business district, and more. Furthermore, as the main north-south road, vital travel has been essentially dead until the crossing is reopened to vehicle traffic, because the town of Ogden and Village of Spencerport are bisected by the Erie Canal. Gillett Road is one of the few north-south crossings over the Erie Canal and its closure has greatly restricted residents’ movement and caused danger in case of an emergency that requires residents to efficiently travel throughout Ogden and Spencerport.

Senator Schumer and Congressman Joe Morelle last year personally wrote to the CSX CEO demanding CSX perform the necessary, critical repairs to the Gillett Road Bridge so that vehicle traffic can be restored and once again be open to the commuters, travelers, families, emergency vehicles, and residents who depend on the crossing daily. Schumer applauded CSX heeding his calls to make repairs necessary to reopen this vital connector for Monroe County.

Cantwell, Outdoor Rec Reps All Say America’s Public Lands Are Not For Sale

Senate could vote later this week on proposal to force sale of millions of federally-owned acres across Western states, including iconic hiking, climbing, hunting spots

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, joined the mayor of Boise, professional climbers, a leader from outdoor gear retailer REI, and a spokesperson for a hunting and angling advocacy group for a virtual press conference to push back on the GOP’s plans to force the sale of millions of acres of public lands as part of a budget bill likely to be voted on by the full Senate later this week.

“The proposal we see so far would mandate a sale of 2 to 3 million acres of Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management land all across the West, and it would make up to 250 million acres of public lands eligible to be sold. Every Western state, that is, except for Montana — because … somehow there’s a ‘Big Sky Swindle’ in the deal,” Sen. Cantwell said. “We’re here to say that we want our public lands protected. We want to be able to continue to hike, fish, hunt and do as much as we can. We don’t want hunters to face a ‘no trespassing’ sign on lands that they’ve hunted on for generations. We don’t want anglers to be blocked from world-class fishing grounds. We don’t want places that climbers and hikers and outdoor recreationists have gone to for years, all of a sudden, to be turned into luxury resorts or golf courses. They are at their highest and best use, and they are beautiful places that have been preserved for all of the American people to enjoy.”

“The representatives voting for this are in deeply red — oftentimes — places, because that’s where BLM and national forest land is, and that’s where I spend the majority of my time,” said professional climber Tommy Caldwell. “They’re going to change the character of the places they care the most about, and it’s really their constituency that’s going to suffer the most.”

“I’m looking out of my office right now at two distinct areas that are put at risk with this proposal to sell off public lands,” said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean. “And for over 20 years, we have a legacy of putting forward ballot measures to protect these lands, so that they’re saved in perpetuity for generations after us. But the system that our residents have created that’s right up against our downtown core is at risk.”

The Senate Republican proposal comes as part of a larger Trump Administration push to privatize public lands. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has stated on multiple occasions that public lands should be recognized as valuable assets on the nation’s balance sheet and potentially used to generate revenue. Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order that described the nation’s natural resources and public lands as a “sum of asset value,” in the context of establishing a “Sovereign Wealth Fund.”  Subsequently, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, proposed greenlighting the sale of over 250 millions of acres of public lands, which could constitute the “largest single sale of national public land in modern history.”  While last night the Senate Parliamentarian rejected Lee’s opening gambit, deeming the proposal ineligible under budget reconciliation process rules, Lee responded, “I’m doing everything I can to support President Trump and move this forward.” He promised, “We’re just getting started.”

The original version of the bill would have required the federal government to sell or transfer at least 0.5% and up to 0.75% of land owned by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, or between 2.1 million and 3.2 million acres. The proposal would have also established a process for potential purchasers, states, and local governments to nominate federal land to be sold, endangering more than 250 million acres across 11 states, with public lands in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming eligible for sale. A political side deal exempted any sales of federal land in Montana. Senator Lee has indicated he has submitted a revised proposal to the parliamentarian, which may exclude Forest Service lands and modify the eligibility of Bureau of Reclamation parcels, but the legislative text detailing the size and scope of any proposed land sales will remain fluid and is unlikely to be finalized or available for public review until shortly before the Senate votes on the measure.

Sen. Cantwell is strongly opposed to selling off federal lands. In a committee hearing on June 10, she took U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to task over the administration’s alarming budget proposal for the Department of the Interior: “We’re all amazed that you seem to be putting forth a budget that is basically saying, ‘I don’t want to acquire. I want to actually sell public lands,’” she said.

Sen. Cantwell was joined at today’s virtual press conference by:

    • Lauren McLean, Mayor of Boise
    • Susan Viscon, REI-Co-op Executive & Outdoor Industry Association Board Member
    • Kaden McArthur, Director of Policy, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers

The PSA welcomes the appointment of Dr Dale Bramley who takes over as Te Whatu Ora / Health NZ CEO next month at a very challenging time for health services.
“We have met Dr Bramley in his current role as interim CEO and have welcomed the constructive discussions to date,” said Fleur Fitzsimons, National Secretary for the Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi.
“Dr Bramley takes on the role at a very challenging time for our public health system. Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand has been starved of the funding it needs to deliver the better patient outcomes the Government is demanding.
“We hope Dr Bramley is clear with Ministers about how their decisions to fund tax cuts over properly funding the health system has impacted the health services New Zealanders expect from his agency.
“The PSA represents some 24,000 health workers across the sector who experience every day the struggle to deliver to the needs of patients. This must change if New Zealanders are to have confidence that the health system will be there for them when they need it.
“The PSA will continue to advocate for greater funding and looks forward to further making that case with Dr Bramley in his new role along with Ministers.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Durbin Urges Navy Leadership To Improve Quality Of Life, Housing For Military Families

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Dick Durbin

    June 24, 2025

In today’s Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, Durbin expressed his concern about the condition of the barracks at Great Lakes Naval Station

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today participated in a Defense Appropriations Subcommittee hearing to review the President’s Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Request for the Navy.  During the hearing, Durbin asked Navy leaders about the politicization of the military and urged them to prioritize improvements to military housing and education for service members and their families.

“All of our branches of service have been careful to draw the line when it comes to partisanship and political involvement…  Men and women in the military do not display partisan feelings when it comes to politics in America. This side of the table is largely political animals, and that side, particularly those in uniform, we expect them to be somewhat down the middle of the road, not involved in any partisan identification or activity,” Durbin said.  “Why is that important?”

General Eric M. Smith, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, replied that it’s critical for military leaders to remain apolitical in order to support the president, regardless of who they may be.  Both John Phelan, Secretary of the U.S. Navy, and Admiral James Kilby, Acting Chief of Naval Operations, concurred with General Smith.

“I hope that [the politization of the military] does not happen.  It shouldn’t happen.  It shouldn’t favor my party or their party or any party in that regard,” Durbin said.

Durbin then pivoted to asking about quality of life concerns for military families stationed at naval bases, particularly at Naval Station Great Lakes, which is located in northern Illinois.

“I’d like to you say a word, or have you say a word, about the ‘Quarterdeck of the Navy,’ which is what we characterize Great Lakes Navy Training Station [as].  It is the only [Navy] bootcamp and primary surface warfare specialty training in the United States.  And in the state of Illinois, we are damn proud of it.  I think one of the things I am concerned about is quality of life, always.  I can recall speaking to a chief petty officer who was transferred from Virginia to Illinois, and [I] asked him how his family liked the Great Lakes.  He said, ‘I didn’t bring my family.  I left my family behind in Virginia.  I said, ‘Why?’  And he said, ‘Because the schools are not good for navy families.’  I think that’s changed because that observation was made many years ago,” Durbin said.

“But I’d ask you, Mr. Secretary, when it comes to quality of life, what efforts are you making, and what efforts should I be making, to address any quality of life issues for those who are part of Great Lakes?” Durbin asked.

Secretary Phelan responded by explaining that he is examining the private management of military housing.  He noted that he’s visited bases that offered condemned buildings as housing for service members.  After seeing the deteriorating building, he instructed the base’s leadership to move service members into the base’s newly built barracks immediately.  Secretary Phelan emphasized that he is prioritizing a review of all barracks to ensure that service members are living in safe, suitable homes.

“One of the privatized military housing communities [at Great Lakes Naval Station] sat empty because 70 percent of its units were condemned and unlivable.  Imagine that.  It strikes my heart to think the men and women who might have occupied that would be in those circumstances.  We can’t let that happen,” Durbin said.

“When it comes to access to education, it is one of the highest priorities of all families, including navy families and marine families,” Durbin said in reference to the chief petty officer who did not move his family with him to Great Lakes Naval Station.  “It is my priority too.”

Video of Durbin’s questions in Committee is available here.

Audio of Durbin’s questions in Committee is available here.

Footage of Durbin’s question in Committee is available here for TV stations.

Durbin has been a strong advocate for military families stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station.  In 2015, he secured a special provision providing increased funding for North Chicago, where the naval base is located, through the Department of Education’s (ED) Impact Aid Program to supplement schools that are affected by a lack of state and local tax base due to federal property being in the district.  The Navy has extended North Chicago’s eligibility for this higher funding at Durbin’s request for future school years.  Durbin is also working with the Navy on efforts to improve conditions at the long-neglected privatized military housing community Halsey Village near Great Lakes Naval Station.

  • MIL-OSI USA: In Spotlight Forum, Durbin Slams GOP’s Budget Reconciliation Bill That Will Siphon Resources From Public Education

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Dick Durbin

    June 24, 2025

In a spotlight forum on Republicans’ so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Durbin exposed Republicans’ short-sighted plan to institute a national school voucher program that will drain critical resources from public schools

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today participated in a spotlight forum entitled “Scamming Our Schools: Robbing Our Students’ Futures to Line Their Pockets.”  During the forum, which was hosted by U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Durbin focused on how the Republican budget reconciliation bill would create a national school voucher program that would further drain resources and funding from public schools.

Durbin began by reflecting on the school voucher program created for Washington, D.C., called the “Opportunity Scholarship Program,” which was suggested by former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH).

“I asked some basic questions when this opportunity program was created.  Basic questions like, who’s going to decide the quality of the teachers in these schools’ situations?  What kind of curriculum will be offered?  What kind of measurement of success or failure will there be?  Will the student be better off as a result of attending these so-called voucher schools?” Durbin began.

“Here’s a couple things that I discovered… The net result of it was not a very positive experience for these students… In fact, we couldn’t find many of the schools several years later when we went out to measure them.  That that was a problem,” Durbin said about the lack of oversight on voucher schools.

“I wonder if we get into a tax credit situation, whether or not there’ll be measurements to avoid the excesses which I’ve noted,” Durbin said.  “I’m wondering what happens with these young people who are disabled when they go through this experience?”

Katy Neas, CEO of the Arc of the United States, which is the largest national community-based organization advocating for and serving people with disabilities, replied to Durbin’s question by noting that many private schools will not enroll students with disabilities.  Additionally, the Republican budget reconciliation bill would not require private schools to accept students with disabilities despite publicly funded schools being required to provide all students with an accessible education.  Ms. Neas added that by creating a national school voucher program, public funds would be redirected to private schools, further draining the already limited resources public schools have to support students with disabilities.

“How much is built into this model to measure whether you actually have a school or just a scam?” Durbin asked.

Ms. Neas replied that there’s no guidelines in the Republicans’ bill to ensure schools are providing an adequate education for students.

“How about the quality of the teachers at these schools?” Durbin asked.

Ms. Neas referenced the school voucher program in Florida, which does not require teachers to be licensed, nor are there curriculum standards for participating schools.

Ms. Alexis Underwood, President of the Association of Bay County Educators, which is a chapter of Florida’s Education Association, later added that public schools, where educators are trained to support students with complex learning needs, are better equipped to support students with disabilities than most private schools, which have little to no requirements to provide high-quality education to students with disabilities.

Video of Durbin’s remarks is available here.

Audio of Durbin’s remarks is available here.

State private school vouchers drain state tax revenues, often through line-item appropriations in the state budget or forgoing revenue by providing tax credits to fund school vouchers.  In a few states, like Florida and New Hampshire, private school vouchers are funded by directly diverting education funding that would have otherwise gone to public schools through the state K-12 funding formula or from the state’s dedicated education fund.

Both the House and Senate version of Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act would allow federal taxpayer dollars to cover school vouchers, which could be used to cover a list of expenses associated with public, private, or religious schools, and the House version of the bill also includes homeschooling expenses as eligible expenses for the voucher.  Both the House and Senate bills would require that students come from a family with a household income of less than 300 percent of the area median gross income, which would cover about 90 percent of families nationwide, including many that are high-income, and many families that already have children enrolled in private schools.

Both versions of the bill also would prevent the federal government from regulating private or religious schools under the voucher provision, leaving students vulnerable to discrimination.  While the House bill’s voucher provision would cost $5 billion a year over four years and sunset after 2029, the Senate bill makes the voucher program permanent with a cost of $4 billion a year.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Chinese lawmakers are deliberating a draft law to improve the country’s reporting system for public health emergencies.

The draft law on response to public health emergencies was on Tuesday submitted to the ongoing session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s national legislature, for its second reading.

It stipulates that any individual or group that discovers the occurrence or potential occurrence of a public health emergency should report their discovery immediately.

It would require health authorities and disease prevention and control departments to promptly notify the people’s government at their level upon receiving such a report, while also reporting to higher-level departments and relevant State Council departments.

The draft law also specifies that authorities responsible for formulating public health emergency response plans should solicit opinions extensively from relevant departments, organizations, experts and various sectors of society to enhance the scientific rigor, pertinence and operational feasibility of plans.

Hamadi Boga, vice president of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), delivers a speech during the inaugural Africa-China Forum on Agri-Tech and Industrial Cooperation in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 24, 2025. [Photo/Xinhua]

The inaugural Africa-China Forum on Agri-Tech and Industrial Cooperation took place on Tuesday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The day-long conference was hosted by Nairobi-based Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Beijing Jingwa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center, the International Livestock Research Institute and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation.

Ibrahim Mayaki, African Union special envoy for food systems, said the continent stands to gain from emulating China’s model of agricultural transformation, driven by forward-looking policies, technology and innovations.

“We can leverage China’s successes in agricultural modernization, rural transformation and poverty alleviation as reference points for Africa’s own agricultural renaissance, while recognizing the specificity of African ecosystems and cultures,” Mayaki said.

Mayaki stressed that joint research between China and Africa in climate-smart farming practices, development of high-yielding crops, modern irrigation technologies and digital extension services could offer lasting solution to hunger, rural poverty and malnutrition affecting the world’s second-largest continent.

Hamadi Boga, vice president of AGRA, noted that China has set the pace in technology- and innovation-led agricultural modernization, inspiring African nations to follow suit, feed their growing population and leapfrog into an industrial era.

The Sino-African agricultural cooperation, according to Boga, has rapidly evolved as witnessed by technology transfer, establishment of demonstration zones, exchange visits and institutional collaboration, boosting crop yield, agro-processing and exports.

Boga also called on African research institutions to forge long-term partnership with their Chinese counterparts to accelerate an inclusive food systems transformation, rooted in improved soil health, climate resilience, access to finance, technologies and markets.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan said China is keen to share with Africa’s bilateral partners its home-grown technologies, innovations, experience and best practices, which could hasten the continent’s agricultural modernization to realize food security and boost export competitiveness.

Guo noted that China-Africa agricultural cooperation has prioritized technology transfer, facilitating trade in agricultural commodities and upgrading value chains for farm produce.

In addition, China has partnered with African countries to enhance response to crop pests and diseases, capacity building for extension workers and farmers, deployment of technologies for scaling up agro-processing and value addition, Guo added.

The Islamic State (IS) group and remnants of other extremist factions remain the biggest security challenge to Syria, spokesman of Syrian interior authorities Noureddin al-Baba said Tuesday, following the arrest of suspects linked to a deadly suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church in Damascus.

At a press conference in the capital Damascus, al-Baba stressed that IS poses a cross-border threat that endangers multiple countries, not just Syria.

Syria’s interior authorities announced Monday that they had dismantled the IS-affiliated cell responsible for Sunday’s suicide bombing at the church in the Dweilaa neighborhood, which killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 60. The attack marked the deadliest of its kind in the Syrian capital in years.

According to al-Baba, a series of raids in rural Damascus following the suicide bombing resulted in the arrest of the entire cell, as well as the seizure of explosives and weapons. Al-Baba confirmed that the group operated independently of any local religious authorities.

Al-Baba said that the interrogation of a captured militant led authorities to the locations of all the cell’s hideouts. He identified the ringleader as Mohammad Abdel-Ilah al-Jumaili, also known as Abu Imad al-Jumaili, a Syrian national from the al-Hajar al-Aswad area of Damascus and a former Islamic State figure known as the “desert governor.”

The two attackers behind the Church bombing, including one who detonated his explosive vest inside Mar Elias Church and another who was captured en route to the Sayyida Zainab Shiite shrine in the Damascus countryside, were foreign nationals who had entered Syria through the desert after escaping from the al-Hol camp.

The spokesman said IS recruited them as part of a broader effort to exploit security gaps following recent transitions in Syria’s governance.

“The misguided youth who had been in al-Hol camp are being recruited by IS under the banner of revenge or retribution,” al-Baba warned.

While describing the recent arrests as a “crushing blow” to IS in the capital and surrounding areas, he pledged that Syria will continue working with neighboring countries to confront the “transnational terrorist threat.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Israel lifts nationwide restrictions after ceasefire with Iran takes effect

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Israel lifted nationwide emergency restrictions on Tuesday evening, signaling a cautious return to normalcy after a fragile ceasefire with Iran took hold, ending nearly two weeks of intense cross-border attacks.

The decision came as Israeli officials assessed the aftermath of the 12-day war, which left dozens dead and over 1,000 wounded, while military leaders warned that despite a pause in fighting, the broader campaign against Iran and its allies was far from over.

Israel’s Home Front Command announced in a statement that the cancellation of the restrictions, which took effect at 8 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), allows all regions of the country to resume full civilian activity, including the reopening of schools, workplaces, and public gatherings. Communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip will remain under guidelines allowing gatherings of up to 2,000 people.

The easing of restrictions marks a tentative sign that the truce is holding after a shaky start, during which both countries accused each other of violating the terms by continuing to launch strikes. An Israeli surprise attack targeting military sites and nuclear scientists across Iran on June 12 sparked the war.

Police said Tuesday that Iranian missile barrages had struck 52 locations across Israel during nearly two weeks of fighting. Eight of the attacks caused fatalities, killing one soldier and 27 civilians. Magen David Adom, Israel’s national rescue service, said 1,319 people were injured, including 17 seriously, 29 moderately, and 872 lightly. An additional 401 people were treated for anxiety.

Israel’s Airports Authority said that Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv and a smaller airport in the northern city of Haifa had resumed full operations after periods of partial or total shutdown during the hostilities.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir held a situational assessment with senior officers on Tuesday and warned that the conflict with Iran is far from over. “We have concluded a significant phase, but the campaign against Iran is not over,” he said. “We are entering a new phase based on the achievements of the previous one.”

He said that Israeli strikes on nuclear-related facilities and missile stockpiles “set Iran’s nuclear project back by years,” but stopped short of claiming the program had been dismantled, a key goal stated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The focus now shifts back to Gaza — to bring the hostages home and to dismantle the Hamas regime,” Zamir added.

According to Gaza’s health authorities, 56,077 Palestinians have been killed and 131,848 wounded in Gaza during the 20-month-long conflict.

  • MIL-OSI China: UN political chief calls for diplomacy to ensure peaceful nature of Iran’s nuke program

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Tuesday called for diplomacy and dialogue to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

In a briefing to the Security Council on the implementation of its Resolution 2231, which endorses the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the six world powers of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, DiCarlo regretted that with less than four months left until the termination of its provisions, the objectives of the resolution and those of the Iran nuclear deal have yet to be fully realized.

    Resolution 2231 expires on Oct. 18, 2025.

The nuclear deal, adopted in the summer of 2015 to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program would be exclusively peaceful, has faced many challenges since its inception, including the withdrawal of the United States from the agreement in 2018 during Donald Trump’s first term of office as U.S. president, said DiCarlo.

Over the last few months, participants of the deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), increased their efforts to identify a way forward for full implementation of the plan. In addition, Iran and the United States engaged in five rounds of bilateral talks, facilitated by Oman, said DiCarlo. “Regrettably, neither of these initiatives produced a way forward to ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.”

The military escalation between Israel and Iran since June 13 and U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities on Saturday (New York time) complicated prospects for achieving full implementation of Resolution 2231. Iran’s strikes on Monday on a U.S. military base in Qatar further exacerbated insecurity in an already tense region, she said.

Monday’s announcement by the United States, in coordination with Qatar, of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran is a significant achievement that potentially pulls Iran, Israel and the region back from the brink, she said.

At the heart of this conflict is the nature of Iran’s nuclear program. Following the deadly clashes of the past 12 days, the ceasefire agreement is an opportunity to avoid a catastrophic escalation and achieve a peaceful resolution of the Iran nuclear issue, she said. “Diplomacy, dialogue and verification remain the best option to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and to bring about concrete economic benefits to the people of Iran.”

The United Nations stands ready to support all efforts that advance peace, dialogue and stability in the region, she said.

  • MIL-OSI China: 2025 Summer Davos sees sustainability and AI meet global collaboration

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

A premier barometer of global economic trends and industrial transformation, the 2025 Summer Davos Forum has seen record attendance for recent years, with over 1,700 participants traveling from around the world.

Its popularity is testament to both the convening power of the event, which is taking place from Tuesday to Thursday in north China’s Tianjin Municipality, and the unparalleled magnetism of China’s mega-scale market.

Also called the 16th Annual Meeting of New Champions of the World Economic Forum (WEF), this year’s forum is themed “Entrepreneurship for a New Era.”

“The theme, which builds on the DNA of this meeting since its inception, particularly focuses on how innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancements can unlock growth, competitiveness and productivity,” Mirek Dusek, managing director of the WEF, said on Tuesday at the forum’s opening press conference.

The event spotlights five key areas: deciphering the world economy, outlook on China, industries disrupted, investing in people and the planet, and new energy and materials.

Unlike the annual meeting of the WEF held every January in Switzerland’s Davos, the Summer Davos Forum places greater emphasis on the future of business and technological advancement. This year’s edition not only demonstrates China’s achievements in high-quality economic development and its steadfast commitment to high-standard opening-up to the international community — it is also a platform for China to actively share the opportunities and dividends of its development with the world.

    Green transformation

On the rooftop of the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Tianjin), where the 2025 Summer Davos Forum is being held for the first time, solar panels supply continuous clean energy to power the venue during the event.

According to the State Grid Corporation of China, this edition of the forum has achieved a 100 percent green power supply for its venues, utilizing a total of 800,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity — equivalent to saving about 300 tonnes of standard coal combustion and cutting approximately 600 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The venue utilizes photovoltaic power generation and sponge city technologies, replacing conventional energy sources with renewables to reduce infrastructure carbon emissions, while significantly enhancing energy, water and material efficiency.

Sustainability is at the core of WEF events, said Severin Podolak, head of event management and operations for WEF, adding that the sofas and other furniture used in the venues are recycled materials from 2023, and some of the paints used for decoration were derived from renewable resources such as fishing nets.

Additionally, a fleet of hundreds of new energy vehicles (NEVs) from six leading carmakers, including Audi FAW, are facilitating eco-conscious transportation for forum participants, advancing the event’s carbon neutrality goals.

The concept of sustainability has been integrated thoroughly — from venue design to the forum’s agenda, with key topics such as Asia’s carbon markets and the next steps for climate resilience becoming focal points of discussions, addressing sustainable development directly.

Green nitrogen fixation has been named in the WEF’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2025, alongside innovations like collaborative sensing and autonomous biochemical sensing, further solidifying sustainability as a global priority.

Today, China stands as the global leader in renewable energy investment. The nation has pioneered transformative technologies in the fields of batteries and electric vehicles, creating millions of high-quality jobs in these future-oriented sectors, according to Gim Huay Neo, managing director of the WEF.

“I think this is an area where there’s a lot of scope for us to learn from China’s experience, where there could actually be constructive partnerships between China and other parts of the world to also support the global energy transition,” Neo said. “The climate emergency and the planetary crisis cannot be resolved if we do not bring everybody along on this journey.”

    AI revolution

A futuristic exhibition zone at the venue has become a major attraction, where cutting-edge AI products like humanoid robots, brain-computer interfaces and fully autonomous drone inspection systems are drawing large crowds of attendees. These innovations vividly showcase Chinese enterprises’ technological breakthroughs and pioneering applications of AI.

“China may have found the key to restarting global economic growth — its ‘AI Plus’ strategy,” said Liu Gang, chief economist of the Chinese Institute of New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Strategies.

He explained that integrating artificial intelligence with the real economy yields remarkable economic benefits. For example, research conducted by his team shows that applying AI to the development of new materials can improve efficiency 100-fold to 1,000-fold.

Across various sessions at the 2025 Summer Davos, discussions on AI are unfolding with remarkable intensity, mirroring the fervent debates witnessed at other premier global forums. Notably, a dedicated session titled “Understanding China’s approach to AI” will be convened, underscoring the international community’s growing recognition of China’s pivotal role in the global AI development landscape.

“It will be like the industrial revolution,” former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said when talking about new technologies at the forum. Countries that embrace it go up, and countries that don’t go down, he said.

“I think how you understand, master and harness the technology revolution solution is the single biggest government challenge for the 21st century,” he noted.

    Global synergy

According to the WEF, the global growth outlook has reached its lowest point in decades. Reigniting the spirit of cooperation will require greater commitment and creativity than ever before.

Professor Tong Jiadong at Nankai University, who has served as the long-term Chinese agenda research leader for the Tianjin Summer Davos Forum, observed that the event has evolved beyond a premier global thought leadership summit into a dynamic platform facilitating international exchange and cooperation.

Zhao Yan, chairman and general manager of Chinese firm Bloomage Biotech, has been a regular participant at the Summer Davos Forum. Over the years, the company has established a comprehensive global supply chain network across over 70 countries and regions.

“Despite navigating complex uncertainties, the enterprise has never resorted to isolationism, but instead strives to reshape global competition rules through open innovation,” Zhao said.

In the first five months of this year, the total volume of China’s imports and exports of goods grew 2.5 percent year on year, and the consumption enthusiasm of foreign visitors surged significantly.

“We value our cooperation with China very much. We’re seeing more and more interest and participation coming here,” said Borge Brende, president and CEO of the WEF. “I’m relatively optimistic for the Chinese economy, both in medium term and long term.”
