  • MIL-OSI Economics: Development Asia: Designing an Effective Data Governance Framework for Plastic Waste Management

    Source: Asia Development Bank

Effective plastic waste management in Southeast Asia depends on strong data governance frameworks that are practical, inclusive, and enforceable. By clearly defining what should be governed—such as data assets, processes, stakeholders, and compliance areas—and how it should be governed—through policies, roles, structures, and monitoring mechanisms—stakeholders can ensure data is accurate, secure, and actionable.

A well-designed and functioning governance operating model connects strategic intent with operational execution, supported by a bottom-up enforcement loop that keeps the system accountable and adaptive.

As the region moves toward digitalization and a circular plastic economy, digital tools and collaborative governance will be essential to unlocking the full potential of data in achieving sustainable outcomes.

Note: Data governance for plastic waste management will be part of the discussions during ADB’s Circular Economy Forum, particularly on 18 June (Wednesday), 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., with the session Data Governance Framework, under Track 3: Digitalization of the Plastic Value Chain. • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung Releases New Refrigerator Software Update To Improve User Convenience

    Source: Samsung

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has started rolling out a software update to introduce new features for its Bespoke AI Refrigerators with screens,1 which is launching in 2025. Designed to enhance the user experience, the update includes the Voice ID feature provided by Bixby, which was unveiled at Welcome to Bespoke AI global launch event in March.

“Our primary goal for this year is to realize an AI Home that adapts intuitively to the user,” said Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We aim to enhance the user experience through continuous software upgrades for existing products, taking us one step closer to a true AI Home experience.”

New Update: Bixby and Samsung TV Plus
The Voice ID feature2 is a new multi-voice recognition function provided by Bixby.3 It identifies users’ voices registered either on the refrigerator or a Galaxy mobile device, enabling personalized features based on the recognized user. This allows consumers to personalize shared home appliances for individual use, offering greater convenience and functionality.

For example, Bixby intelligently switches to each user’s Samsung account based on the recognized user. Users can check their registered schedules on the calendar,4 or their photos5 using simple voice commands. Also, they can trigger an alarm on their phone to check its location, even when the device is set to silent mode.6

The Voice ID feature also enables seamless interactions with the refrigerator screen for users who utilize vision enhancements on their Galaxy mobile phones. Even without a request to switch accounts, Bixby automatically switches accounts with general conversations for these users. It then synchronizes the appliance’s display modes with the settings on the user’s mobile phone, such as color inversion or grayscale.7

Additionally, Samsung has introduced a new way to activate Bixby on the screen. Previously, users could activate Bixby by clicking the Bixby icon on the screen or through voice commands. When the screen is off, an additional option has been added to activate Bixby by double-tapping the display. Users can make the most of this feature by selecting their preferred method in the settings.

The update is being applied to Bespoke AI Refrigerators with AI Family Hub launching in 2025 first,8 with availability coming after the completion of the latest software update on AI Family Hub screens or SmartThings.

Additionally, Samsung plans to gradually apply this update to the Bespoke AI refrigerators with AI Home9 in the second quarter of 2025. For refrigerators with AI Home, the update expands the service area for Samsung TV Plus, as well. Previously available in only South Korea and the United States, the service will extend to Canada, Brazil, Australia, Mexico and India. Thanks to the update, it is expected that consumers will be able to easily enjoy entertainment features right from their kitchen with Samsung TV Plus.

1 Refers to the refrigerators with AI Family Hub, and 9-inch AI Home screens
2 Each user must register for a Samsung Account on screen appliances in advance. Voice ID should be registered either on the refrigerator, or Galaxy mobile devices and then transferred to the refrigerator. (Limited to Galaxy S24 and subsequent models where Voice ID can be registered.)
3 Bixby is Samsung’s brand of Internet of Things (IoT) voice assistant. Bixby service availability may vary depending on the country. Bixby recognizes certain accents/dialects of English (US, UK, Indian), Chinese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Spanish (Spain, Latin America) and Portuguese (Brazil). User interface may change and differ by device. Availability of Bixby features and content providers may vary depending on the country/carrier/language/device model/OS version. A Samsung account log-in and network connection (Wi-Fi or data network) are required.
4 To use calendar feature, users need to either register their schedule directly on the refrigerator or link their mobile phone calendar in advance. Only Google or Microsoft calendars saved under a Google or Microsoft account can be synced with the Bespoke AI Refrigerator with AI Family Hub. (Refrigerators with AI Home support Google Calendar only.)
5 Gallery feature is supported only for users who have saved photos to OneDrive cloud storage via the Samsung Gallery app on a Samsung mobile phone.
6 To enable the service, a preset is required in the SmartThings Find.
7 When a user registers a device through the SmartThings app, a one-time sync notification may appear via a plug-in. If the user signs into their Samsung account on a refrigerator and related settings are stored in the cloud, this data may be transmitted once to the device. Screen settings can be modified at any time, and any changes will be saved and remain in effect unless manually updated.
8 Timeline may vary depending on the service region or model.
9 AI Home refers to the 7’’ or 9’’ LCD screen on the product. Does not mean all services available on the AI Home are AI or generate information or outcome using AI. Certain functions accessible through the AI Home utilize AI-based algorithms, which can be updated periodically to improve accuracy. AI-based algorithms may generate incomplete or incorrect information.

  • MIL-Evening Report: ‘Gutting the Ponsonby community’: Locals say post office should stay open

By Aisha Campbell, RNZ News intern

Ponsonby’s post office is shutting shop next month despite push back from the local community.

A sign on the storefront, which is at the College Hill end of Ponsonby Road, said the closure would take place on 4 July but the post boxes would be “staying put”.

Ponsonby local and author John Harris said New Zealand Post’s decision to close the store was “ill-considered” and it should “try harder” to cater for the people who use the shop’s services.

“They’ve got to be mindful of the vital role that post shops like this one play in glueing the community together,” Harris said.

“If you go down to the post shop you’ll see it’s buzzing with activity; people popping in to post parcels or to get forms filled out and so forth . . .  they’ve got to think about the effect on small communities and this is like gutting the Ponsonby community.”

Viv Rosenberg, a spokesperson for the Ponsonby Business Association, said the group is saddened by the decision to close the shop.

”Our local post office has been part of the fabric of our community in Three Lamps for several years and we regard the team there as part of our Ponsonby family. We are working alongside others to try and keep it open.”

    Plan but no timeframe
In 2018, NZ Post announced its plan to close its remaining 79 standalone post offices but did not give a timeframe on when the final store would be shut.

NZ Post general manager consumer Sarah Sandoval said customer data and service patterns were analysed to determine where NZ Post services were best placed.

“The Ponsonby area is well serviced by existing postal outlets, and to remove duplications of services, we’ve decided to make this change.”

The Asia Pacific Report story about the impending Ponsonby post office shop closure published earlier this month. Image: Asia Pacific Report

She also said that there were nearby options available, including on Hardinge Street 1.4km away, and NZ Post Herne Bay, 1km away.

The NZ Post website said “store closures are given very careful consideration”.

“[Reasons for closure] can include a decline in customer numbers or services which significantly affect the economic viability of the store,” NZ Post said.

Harris emailed NZ Post CEO David Walsh expressing his disapproval of the decision to close the shop and requesting it be reconsidered.

He said a response by the NZ Post general manager consumer stated the closure followed a close look at customer data and that there were other stores serving the Ponsonby community, which was an unsustainable way for the business to operate.

“Herne Bay, Hardinge Street and Wellesley Street are either a challenging walk or you hop in the car and add to the grid,” Harris said.

“They’re only thinking about the sustainability of the New Zealand Post itself not the community.”

Apple’s WWDC 2025 focuses on streamlined interfaces, AI integration, and future of edge intelligence, says GlobalData

    Posted in Technology

    Following the news that US tech giant Apple Inc’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 began on 9 June 2025;

Anisha Bhatia, Senior Technology Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view:

“Apple did what Apple does best – simplifying user interfaces for daily use and enhancing the seamless integration and uniform appearance of its devices across various platforms. The key highlights from the event included a streamlined operating system naming convention aligned with the current year, improvements to continuity features across its ecosystem, and the introduction of a new design aesthetic known as Liquid Glass across products, a Vision Pro feature.

“Apple Intelligence was peppered throughout the announcements. The Cupertino-based company acknowledged the need for additional time to meet its quality standards – the nonchalant manner of the announcement reflected Apple’s confidence in its ongoing development, despite recent discussions around AI advancements in the industry.

“Among the notable features showcased were the Live Translate function, which leverages on-device intelligence, Visual Intelligence capabilities, and a contextual search feature called Spotlight, exclusive to MacBook users. Apple also announced plans to open access to its on-device AI models for developers, enabling the creation of applications that utilize edge AI technology and taking advantage of its stellar – and massive – developer community. Developers will now be able to build customized services within applications that leverage edge AI for improved performance and functionality. This move is expected to result in a surge of sophisticated features that can operate with enhanced intelligence, directly on users’ devices without incurring cloud costs.

“Generative AI does not pose as significant a threat to Apple’s financial health as it does to Google’s. Consequently, it was appropriate for Google’s developer conference to indicate a strategic pivot toward Gemini. However, it may not be entirely fair to evaluate Apple using the same criteria. Nevertheless, the reality is that AI is a permanent fixture in the technological landscape, and it would be advantageous for Apple to embrace and implement the AI features it announced last year on a larger scale with alacrity.”

Trump’s move to transform US pharma manufacturing raises doubts over its effectiveness, says GlobalData

    Posted in Pharma

In a bold move to reshape the landscape of pharmaceutical manufacturing in the US, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order on May 5 aimed at streamlining regulatory hurdles for domestic producers while tightening the reins on foreign manufacturers. This directive, which instructs the FDA to expedite the approval process for US pharmaceutical facilities, has ignited a wave of skepticism within the industry regarding its potential effectiveness, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Kathryn Kinch, Senior Pharma Product Manager at GlobalData, comments: “The executive order mandates the FDA to increase fees and inspections for foreign manufacturing plants, but critics are raising eyebrows over the lack of clarity surrounding its implementation. Questions linger about whether the new regulations will apply universally or be limited to specific facilities, production lines, or products. As federal agencies scramble to develop actionable guidelines, the pharmaceutical sector watches closely.”

GlobalData’s Bio/Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Report notes as the industry grapples with these changes, major players are making significant investments in US manufacturing capabilities. Johnson & Johnson is set to invest a staggering $55 billion over the next four years, including a $2 billion biologics production site in North Carolina that promises to create 500 jobs. Similarly, Genentech has announced a $700 million investment in a new East Coast facility, expected to generate over 400 permanent positions.

Katarina Zahedi, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData, adds: “These investments reflect a growing trend among pharmaceutical companies to bolster domestic operations in response to geopolitical pressures and potential tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals.”

The Bio/Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Report is a monthly analysis of news and trends affecting pharmaceutical contract manufacturing organizations. The report lists the latest contract manufacturing agreements, opportunities and threats for CDMOs, M&A and financing of CDMOs, and emerging regulatory news.

Cyberattack could have cost M&S up to £130m in online apparel sales so far, says GlobalData

    Posted in Retail

Following Marks & Spencer resuming online orders after its cyberattack:

Pippa Stephens, Senior Apparel Analyst at GlobalData, offers her view:

“Marks & Spencer’s (M&S) resumption of online orders across select fashion products following a cyberattack will be a welcome relief for shoppers, with many holding off on purchases for almost seven weeks due to its physical locations being less convenient to visit or there being insufficient stock instore. However, the retailer is currently estimating delivery times of up to 10 days, which may still deter customers who are accustomed to faster delivery options from its competitors. Many key products are also lacking availability across several sizes, which could frustrate customers and lead to lost sales opportunities.

“M&S was one of the biggest winners in the UK apparel market in 2024, with its market share rising 0.4ppts to 5.2%*, the highest it has been since 2017. This upward trajectory has now been compromised by the cyberattack, with GlobalData estimating that the retailer could have lost up to £130m in online apparel sales while its website was down, depending on how much spend shifted to stores. There are further losses to come still until the website is fully operational again, with disruption expected to continue until at least July. Alongside reduced availability in its food division, and anticipated increased stock management costs, M&S also expects the attack will have a £300m impact on group operating profit in its FY2025/26.

“The impact of this cyberattack will be long-lasting for M&S, with the stealing of customer data potentially undermining its hard-won gains in brand reputation and customer loyalty. The retailer will have also been left with excess seasonal stock, impacting its margins as it will be forced to implement more discounts. Therefore, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities retailers face in an increasingly digital landscape, where a single breach can have far-reaching consequences. The recent cyberattacks on other prominent apparel players such as Harrods, The North Face and Adidas underscores the pervasive threat to the retail industry and highlights the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures.”

*Data is from GlobalData’s Retail Intelligence Center. Market shares are calculated from UK apparel sales for the calendar year, including sales tax. Shares are as of May 2025.

    Source: WTO

    Headline: UN Ocean Conference 2025

Your Excellencies H.E. Minister Marina Silva (Brazil) and H.E. Minister Stavros Papastavrou (Greece), the two Co-Chairs of this session, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,
First allow me to thank President Macron and UNSG Guterres and Costa Rica for co-hosting this important conference. (Brazil will host COP30, and Greece hosted “Our Oceans” in 2024)
I am delighted to be here today.
We are here because there is no other option but to protect marine and coastal ecosystems from the threats of the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. We know that business as usual, especially in the current global context, is not an option. And trade is part of the solutions we need.
A little-known fact is that one of the WTO’s fundamental goals, as enshrined in the preamble to our founding agreement, is the optimal use of the world’s resources in accordance with the objective of sustainable development and the protection and preservation of the environment.
The WTO has been doing its bit – and I am convinced that if we work together, we can do much more.
I want to make three points.
Key Point 1: First, our landmark Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), which I had the honour to announce to the ocean community at UNOC2 in Lisbon, delivered on SDG 14.6. With 101 WTO Members having ratified the Agreement, we now need only ten more ratifications for it to enter into force.

USD 22 billion in harmful fisheries subsidies are provided every year. These contribute to the overexploitation of marine resources and can ultimately lead to the collapse of fish stocks and associated economic activities. Beyond fisheries, there are over USD 2 trillion of harmful subsidies on fossil fuels, agriculture and other purposes that could be redirected.
The Agreement establishes new multilateral rules that prohibit the most harmful forms of fisheries subsidies, freeing up resources that could be repurposed to support practices that promote healthy fisheries, livelihoods, food security and value added.
In addition to the BBNJ we need the AFS to enter into force.  Once two-thirds of the WTO’s 166 members formally accept the agreement, its subsidy curbs will enter into force – and so will its provisions to provide developing and least-developed countries with technical and financial support to build the capacity needed to upgrade fisheries management, integrate sustainability considerations into their fisheries policies,  and otherwise implement the new rules.
Our donor-supported Fish Fund last week launched its first call for proposals from members seeking such support – but disbursements cannot start until we get the ten more ratifications needed for entry into force. So let me once again request WTO Members that have not yet done so to help make history by ratifying the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies as soon as possible!
As many of you are aware, WTO Members are working to build on the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies by agreeing on additional disciplines that will disincentivize overcapacity and overfishing, and support the sustainable management of fishing resources. Here too, I urge WTO members represented here to work with each other to help us get to yes.

Key Point 2: Second, trade policy alone is not enough. The solutions we need require a coherent multisectoral approach that complements trade policy action with finance and investment to unlock inclusive, sustainable growth from the ocean economy, particularly for coastal developing countries and small island developing States.
The blue economy is estimated to have an annual value of over US$ 2.6 trillion .  More than 3 billion people either directly or indirectly rely on the oceans for their livelihoods. Over 130 million are directly employed in ocean-based roles.
Several SIDS, coastal economies and LDCs are seeking to harness the economic potential of the ocean in a sustainable manner by complementing traditional sectors such as tourism, fisheries, and seaport activities with emerging industries like marine biotechnology, energy and mineral exploration.
They have opportunities to use trade to leverage green and blue comparative advantages – springing from their abundant renewable energy potential, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity-based ocean products – to tap into emerging sustainable value chains.
If they can harness these opportunities, it would be ‘re-globalization’ in practice: contributing to sustainable growth, diversification and job creation while making the wider global economy more inclusive and resilient.
But realizing this vision requires international cooperation to maintain an open and predictable trading environment as well as to de-risk investment. At the WTO, we have another important plurilateral Agreement the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement (IFDA) with 131 Members that does just this.
Key Point 3: Third, we can do more to  unlock “win-win” outcomes that leverage trade policy to support economic development while protecting ocean sustainability.
Let’s look at  a few examples.

One is maritime transport. Over 80 % of international trade by volume is shipped by sea.  However, shipping also estimated to account for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.  There are other environmental impacts: oil spills and underwater noise pollution in sensitive maritime ecosystems; the spread of invasive alien species in ballast water and so forth.
Trade policies can help finding solutions to these sustainability challenges.
For instance, as public and private stakeholders step up work to decarbonize the shipping industry, with important recent outcomes at the IMO in this regard, governments can amplify their efforts by reducing trade barriers and facilitating the cross-border diffusion of environmentally friendly goods and services for green shipping. WTO work on standards and regulations (TBT), including energy efficiency requirements and promoting international standards for low emission fuels or hydrogen, could similarly lower costs and increase scale economies.. The WTO is a forum for members to share best practices and exchange views on their approaches to reduce shipping emissions. The initiative on fossil-fuel subsidy reforms led by a group of WTO members shows an additional path to help correct incentives for emissions reduction.
On a related subject, ocean based renewable energy has enormous potential. The global offshore wind energy market was valued at nearly USD 40 billion last year, and pilot projects are underway to harness tidal energy.
Trade is a necessary means to diffuse renewable energy technologies and related services, particularly to small countries that may have limited domestic production capacity.

Another area where trade policy can help is plastics and marine pollution.  You all know about the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” – an area roughly the size of Mongolia. You might not know that 83 WTO members are running a Dialogue on Plastic Pollution (DPP) and environmentally sustainable plastic trade, looking at issues such as plastics value chains, customs and regulatory issues, and how trade policy could help scale up plastic substitutes. Thanks to this work, we are beginning to better understand how trade policies could play a role in helping to tackle the problem – and we have been bringing these insights to our support for the ongoing UN International Plastics Treaty Negotiations (which I’m sure Inger from UN Environment will update you on).
Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen: let me conclude here, with three requests: 1) Remember that trade is part of the toolkit for the sustainability of marine and coastal ecosystems. 2) Please make sure that what your trade officials say in Geneva aligns with the positions you take in forums like this one. And 3) Please ratify the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement!
Thank you. I am looking forward to the discussion.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Trade critical to ocean sustainability — DG Okonjo-Iweala at UN Ocean Conference

    Source: WTO

Headline: Trade critical to ocean sustainability — DG Okonjo-Iweala at UN Ocean Conference

DG Okonjo-Iweala highlighted that trade and the WTO can play a key role in harnessing the opportunities from the blue economy and in protecting the oceans’ resources. Underscoring the blue economy’s estimated annual value of over USD 2.6 trillion, she stressed: “The ocean is vital for our food, livelihoods and the health of our planet. More than 3 billion people either directly or indirectly rely on the oceans for their livelihoods.” She also emphasized the importance of the oceans in helping many WTO members meet their development objectives, including coastal and small island developing states (SIDS).
Noting that marine and coastal ecosystems are threatened by climate change, biodiversity loss and marine pollution, including plastics pollution, she said that conserving and sustainably managing ocean resources is absolutely critical. “Business as usual is not an option” she said, stressing that a coherent approach that connects trade, finance and investment can help unlock inclusive, sustainable growth from the ocean economy.
DG Okonjo-Iweala said the WTO can support decarbonization efforts by reducing trade barriers and facilitating the cross-border diffusion of environmentally friendly goods, services and technology for maritime shipping and for harnessing renewable energy from the oceans. The WTO also provides a forum for members to share experiences on the trade impact of environmental measures, she noted.
Highlighting the important role the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) plays in reinforcing international co-operation for the good of the world’s oceans and those who depend on its resources, DG Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of eliminating harmful fisheries subsidies to preserve ocean resources. WTO members have taken a first important step by adopting the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies in June 2022, she said, noting that only 10 more ratifications are needed for its entry into force – so far 101 members have already ratified.
DG Okonjo-Iweala was speaking at the opening high-level panel dedicated to conserving, sustainably managing and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems, including deep-sea ecosystems. Her address can be viewed here.
DG Okonjo-Iweala also joined a high-level occasion hosted by France’s President Emmanuel Macron for heads of state and other dignitaries to celebrate World Ocean Day on 8 June.
On 13 June, the WTO Secretariat will organize a side-event titled “Sustainable fisheries: The role of trade from oceans to plate”, co-organized with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and UNOC co-hosts France and Costa Rica. The event will be opened by WTO Deputy Director-General Angela Ellard, Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Arnold André Tinoco, and France’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agnès Pannier-Runacher. The discussion will feature experts from international organizations, the private sector, civil society and academia.
DDG Angela Ellard will deliver a keynote address on 13 June at a session entitled “The WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies and its Benefits: Perspectives from Science, Economics and Small-Scale Fishers” hosted by the Stop Funding Overfishing Coalition.
The WTO Secretariat will also participate at panels and side-events during the UN Ocean Conference, and at special events such as the Blue Economy and Finance Forum.
The WTO Fish Fund opened a Call for Proposals on 6 June, inviting developing and least-developed country (LDC) members that have ratified the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies to submit requests for project grants aimed at helping them implement the Agreement. More information can be found here.

Source: US Energy Information Administration – EIA

Headline: EIA expects low crude oil prices and declining rig count to affect U.S. crude oil production trends through 2026

    U.S. ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION
    WASHINGTON DC 20585

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    June 10, 2025

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects the Brent crude oil price to fall to near $60 per barrel by the end of the year and to average about $59 per barrel in 2026. EIA expects the low price of crude oil to affect both U.S. crude oil production and retail gasoline prices in the short term.

In its June Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), EIA forecasts U.S. crude oil production to average about 13.4 million barrels per day this year, just below the record highs earlier this year. For 2026, the forecast is slightly lower than 2025 levels. EIA expects U.S. retail gasoline prices to average below $3.10 per gallon through the end of 2026, which is about 6% lower than the 2024 average price.

    U.S. energy market indicators 2024 2025 2026
Brent crude oil spot price (dollars per barrel) $81 $66 $59
Retail gasoline price (dollars per gallon) $3.30 $3.10 $3.10
U.S. crude oil production (million barrels per day) 13.2 13.4 13.4
Natural gas price at Henry Hub (dollars per million British thermal units) $2.20 $4.00 $4.90
U.S. liquefied natural gas gross exports (billion cubic feet per day) 12 15 16
    Shares of U.S. electricity generation
    Natural gas 42% 40% 40%
    Coal 16% 16% 15%
    Renewables 23% 25% 27%
    Nuclear 19% 19% 18%
    U.S. GDP (percentage change) 2.8% 1.4% 1.7%
    U.S. CO2 emissions (billion metric tons) 4.8 4.8 4.8
Data source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Short-Term Energy Outlook, June 2025

Some key highlights from the June STEO include:

    • Global oil supply, demand, and prices: EIA revised its 2025 global oil production forecast slightly upward and its global petroleum products consumption forecast slightly downward for both 2025 and 2026, leading to an expectation of growing global oil inventories. EIA expects oil inventories to grow by about 800,000 barrels per day in 2025 and 600,000 barrels per day in 2026. EIA’s expectations for inventory growth are the primary reason it expects oil prices to decline through this year and next year.
    • U.S. crude oil production: Domestic crude oil production reached an all-time high of 13.5 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2025. EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to decline from that high through the end of 2026 as oil producers respond to lower prices. Data from Baker Hughes shows the number of active drilling rigs declined last month by much more than EIA had expected. Fewer active rigs affect EIA’s forecast for how many wells U.S. operators will drill and complete throughout 2026. EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to average about 13.4 million barrels per day this year and just below that amount in 2026.
    • U.S. gasoline prices: Another effect of lower oil prices is that EIA expects lower average U.S. gasoline prices through 2026. Regular-grade retail gasoline prices average $3.10 per gallon in the third quarter of 2025 in EIA’s forecast, down 7% from the same period last year. EIA expects retail gasoline prices in the eastern part of the country to be below $3.00 per gallon for most of the next year and a half. On the West Coast, EIA expects refinery capacity reductions to cause a 4% annual price increase next year.
    • Natural gas prices: EIA expects the Henry Hub natural gas spot price to average about $4.00 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2025 and $4.90/MMBtu in 2026, compared with $2.20/MMBtu in 2024.
    • Electricity demand: EIA revised its forecast for electricity demand growth in 2025 upward by about 1% to reflect greater expected demand growth in the commercial and industrial sectors, particularly from data centers and manufacturing operations. This growth in power demand is especially notable in regions managed by the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas and PJM independent system operators. EIA expects that U.S. commercial sector electricity consumption will grow by 3% in 2025 and by 5% in 2026.
    • Electricity generation: EIA expects total U.S. electricity generation this summer will be about 1% greater than last summer. EIA expects higher natural gas prices this summer to result in less generation from natural gas-fired power plants compared with last summer, which is expected to be offset by more generation from coal, solar, and hydro.
    • Trade policy assumptions: The U.S. macroeconomic outlook we use in the STEO is based on S&P Global’s macroeconomic model. S&P Global’s most recent model reflects the tariffs announced in April and includes the 90-day temporary suspension of tariffs granted to certain countries. However, the model was finalized before the ruling by the Court of International Trade on May 28th that temporarily halted all reciprocal tariffs. As a result, our macroeconomic forecast assumes lower tariffs on China’s products compared with last month’s STEO and 10% tariffs on countries subject to the 90-day temporary suspension. These differences in tariff rates likely have offsetting effects on the macroeconomic forecast.

    Source: Apple

Headline: Apple services deliver powerful features and intelligent updates to users this fall

    June 10, 2025

    UPDATE

Apple services deliver powerful features and intelligent updates to users this fall

New features include AutoMix and updates to Lyrics in Apple Music; preferred routes and Visited Places in Apple Maps; easy-to-track orders with Apple Intelligence in Apple Wallet; the introduction of Digital ID; and more

With the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, and watchOS 26 this fall, Apple is bringing exciting new features and adding more intelligence across its services, delivering even greater everyday functionality to users. This includes an enhanced listening experience in Apple Music; easier navigation with preferred routes and Visited Places in Apple Maps; new ways to make and track purchases with Apple Intelligence in Apple Wallet; customized playback experiences with Apple Podcasts; a refreshed boarding pass in Wallet; the introduction of Digital ID; and more.

“Apple’s services are integral to many parts of a user’s day, and we’re excited to bring features that pack even more power and fun into their everyday moments,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “These updates will help users better navigate and explore the world around them with Apple Maps, offer an enhanced Apple Music experience, elevate how they shop with Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, and so much more.”

“AI and machine learning are a core part of what makes Apple’s services feel so personal and intuitive to our users around the world,” said Jeff Robbin, Apple’s vice president of Services Engineering. “They love the ease and simplicity that intelligent features like natural language search and App Store review summaries have brought, and we’re excited to continue adding thoughtful, tailored experiences to Apple’s services — including AutoMix, which mixes songs like a DJ in Apple Music, the option to use Enhance Dialogue to isolate voices and make them sound clearer in Apple Podcasts, and more.”

Apple Music Introduces AutoMix, Upgrades to Lyrics, and More

Apple Music delivers an elevated listening experience with AutoMix, which mixes one song into the next, just like a DJ. Using AI to analyze audio features, it crafts unique transitions between songs with time stretching and beat matching to deliver continuous playback and an even more seamless listening experience.

This fall, Apple Music brings Lyrics Translation, which lets users understand the meaning of their favorite songs, and Lyrics Pronunciation, which enables users to sing along when lyrics are in another language. The new features use machine learning to translate lyrics — with fine-tuning from language experts — to ensure the emotion, cultural context, and lyrical intent are fully preserved.

With Sing, the sing-along experience reaches a whole new level, allowing users to transform iPhone into a handheld microphone for Apple TV and have their voice amplified as they belt out their favorite songs with friends. And with real-time lyrics and visual effects that light up the screen, Sing reaches a new level of fun.

Additionally, users can pin their favorite music to the top of their Library in Apple Music for easy access.

Apple Maps Gets More Intelligent and Personalized with Preferred Routes and Visited Places

Apple Maps makes everyday life easier with new enhancements that help users navigate their preferred routes and keep track of places they’ve previously visited, all while protecting user privacy.1 iPhone can now use on-device intelligence to learn and understand the routes users take between the places they frequently visit, like home and work. The Maps widget then shows users a preview of their commute so they know what to expect before they leave, and commute notifications alert users of significant delays and offer alternate routes, even before their journey begins.

With Visited Places, users can allow iPhone to intelligently detect the places they visit and spend time in — like restaurants or shops — and they’ll automatically be saved to Maps. Users can search for places they’ve visited, and easily share them with family and friends. Visited Places are built with privacy in mind; they’re protected with end-to-end encryption, cannot be accessed by Apple, and can be easily removed with just a swipe.

A Customized Playback Experience with Apple Podcasts

Apple Podcasts delivers more customization to the listening experience, including a wider range of playback speeds and Enhance Dialogue. Users will be able to find the perfect listening speed for them, with speed options from 0.5x to 3x, and save their preferred setting for each show. Using real-time audio processing and machine learning, users can turn on Enhance Dialogue to hear speech more clearly over background sounds.

New Ways to Track Orders with Apple Intelligence and Apple Wallet, and Make Purchases with Apple Pay

Apple Wallet now uses Apple Intelligence to automatically identify, summarize, and display order tracking details from emails sent from merchants or delivery carriers. This works across all orders, giving users the ability to see their full order details, progress notifications, and more, all in one place.

Additionally, Apple Pay expands the ability to pay with rewards and installments to in-store purchases for added flexibility and choice. Users can view and pay with rewards — as well as access installment loan offers from eligible credit or debit cards — when making an Apple Pay purchase in person with iPhone.

The ability to access installments from credit and debit cards, including from pay-over-time providers, when making an in-store Apple Pay purchase will roll out in the U.S. with Affirm, Cash App Afterpay, Klarna, Synchrony, and U.S. Bank; in the UK with Monzo and Klarna; and in Canada with Klarna. The ability to redeem rewards for in-store purchases with Apple Pay will be available beginning in the U.S. with Synchrony and U.S. Bank.2

Send and Receive Money in Group Chats with Apple Cash

Apple Cash provides a convenient way for users to request, send, and receive money directly within group conversations in Messages, making it easier to settle up after dinner or pay friends back for concert tickets.3 Users can send money to an individual or request money from everyone in the group.

More Convenient Travel with a Refreshed Boarding Pass Experience and Digital ID in Wallet

In Apple Wallet, a refreshed boarding pass experience delivers rich, relevant information straight to users’ fingertips with Live Activities that offer real-time updates about their flights. For added convenience, users can also share their flight’s Live Activities so friends and family can stay up to date on their journeys.

Refreshed boarding passes also allow users to conveniently access Maps to navigate airports and explore local recommendations, all in one place from their pass; quickly use Find My to track important items and report lost baggage; view key services on an airline’s app, such as seat upgrades and standby lists; and more. Refreshed boarding passes will be available starting with Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Jetstar, Lufthansa Group, Qantas, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Australia.

Digital ID offers a secure and private new way for users to store and present their ID information using their iPhone and Apple Watch. Users can seamlessly create and add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet using a U.S. passport.

With REAL ID implementation in effect, at launch, Digital ID provides another way for users to conveniently and securely present an ID in person at select TSA checkpoints for identity verification purposes during domestic travel. Digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport, and cannot be used for international travel and border crossing in lieu of a U.S. passport. Like all IDs in Apple Wallet, this new solution takes advantage of the privacy and security features already built into iPhone and Apple Watch.

Additionally, Verify with Wallet on the Web enables users to seamlessly and securely present their eligible driver’s license or state ID in Wallet to websites for age and identity verification, starting with Chime, Turo, Uber Eats, and U.S. Bank, as well as the Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS, and Maryland MVA.

Ready-Made Custom Plans Unlock Consistent Routines in Apple Fitness+

Custom Plans in Apple Fitness+ make it simpler than ever to follow a personalized schedule, automatically creating plans based on users’ workout and meditation preferences, including their top activities, durations, trainers, music, and more.

To keep users motivated, Stay Consistent provides a premade schedule of activities that matches their current routine. With Push Further, users receive a plan that increases the time of each day’s workout sessions — or even adds another day — making it perfect for those looking to challenge themselves. For anyone new to Fitness+, Get Started provides a ready-made plan built from selected interests or popular activities, giving users a helpful starting point. Additionally, Custom Plans are now centrally located in a dedicated Plans page.

A New Daily Puzzle Brings a Fresh, Friendly Challenge to Apple News+

Apple News adds Emoji Game to Apple News+ Puzzles, joining Crossword, Mini-Crossword, Quartiles, and Sudoku. Emoji Game brings to life one of users’ favorite ways to communicate in a fun and engaging way, with players challenged to use emoji to complete three phrases, with the goal of solving the puzzle in as few moves as possible. Users can share puzzles, track stats and streaks, and compete with others through Game Center leaderboards. Emoji Game features a daily puzzle available in the U.S. and for English-speaking users in Canada, and can be accessed from the Following tab in the News app.

Apple’s services make everyday activities more personal, productive, and enjoyable, and these new features and additional intelligent updates continue to deliver thoughtful, tailored experiences to users across the globe.

One is a revision of an existing document, retitled to – IMCA R006 ‘ROV System Inspection’; the other two are newly developed guidance documents ‘Requirements for IMCA-Approved Class A ROV Simulator Accreditation’ – IMCA R028, and supporting governance document ‘Interim scheme for IMCA approval of simulator systems used for work and skills’ – IMCA G014.

“All are aimed at advancing safety consistency and competency in the offshore industry and were requested by members and their clients” explained Roger Moore, IMCA Technical Adviser

“The governance document sets out requirements for the approval of simulator systems (in general) with the technical requirements for an ROV Simulator approval detailed in R028.

“The  content of R006 has been reviewed and revised to ensure our offering remains a robust and effective auditing process and also allows for future integration with the IMCA eCMID system. Developed  in collaboration with committee workgroups and industry experts and aligned with best practice, the documents will support IMCA members and training providers in delivering robust, approved programmes that meet modern operational needs, and reflet IMCA’s commitment to promoting technical excellence and competence across the marine contracting sector.”

    Summaries of the three publications

    IMCA R006 – ROV Audit (Revision 2.0)
This document provides guidance aimed at offshore contractors, detailing the audit process for ROV systems, which includes equipment checks and compliance with operational standards. It replaces previous versions from 2001 and 2020, reflecting current industry practices and requirements. The document emphasises the importance of maintaining equipment inventories and following manufacturers’ instructions to ensure compliance with operational procedures. In the imminent future, a feature for ROV audits will be integrated into the eCMID platform, accessible via the eCMID application, allowing ROV Audits to be undertaken digitally. This feature will complement the R006 ROV Audit document.

IMCA R028 – Requirements for IMCA-Approved Class A ROV Simulator Accreditation
This new document establishes the criteria for the accreditation of Class A ROV simulators, which are defined as high-fidelity, fully immersive training systems. The document sets out the minimum capabilities, performance benchmarks, and evaluation procedures for simulators to qualify as Class A. The goal is to ensure these simulators offer realistic, effective training that mirrors offshore operational conditions. Accreditation helps assure industry confidence in simulator-based learning and supports the continued development of skilled, competent ROV personnel.

IMCA G014 – Interim scheme for IMCA approval of simulator systems used for work and skills
This is a guidance document for the approval of simulator systems (in general). The scheme enables members to verify their simulators meet IMCA guidelines. The document outlines the scheme and provides detail on Eligibility for Approval, Fees Structure and Application Process. This document has been written so that future iterations can include any simulator system (e.g. DP), however the only type of simulator that can be approved at the moment, is an ROV simulator. The document was written to support document R028.

Headline: Introducing the Apple Games app: A personalized home for games

    June 10, 2025

    UPDATE

Introducing the Apple Games app: A personalized home for games and playing with friends

At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled Apple Games, an all-new destination designed to help players jump back into the games they love, find their next favorite, and have more fun with friends, turning even single-player games into shared experiences. The Games app makes it easier than ever for players to enjoy all their games in one convenient place and see what’s happening across their games, including major events and updates, so they never miss a moment.

    Here’s what developers are saying:

As my friends have grown up and moved away, I miss hearing about what they’re playing on their phones, and the Games app is a great way I can get a window back into their gaming worlds. The app also helps us seamlessly integrate and extend all of the social community features we’ve built into Puzzmo directly into the center of our player’s existing daily play routine.” — Zach Gage, indie developer and cofounder of Puzzmo

“The introduction of challenges and a new social layer marks a major leap forward for both developers and players. While creators stay focused on gameplay, these features bring people together in just a few taps, effortlessly deepening player engagement — especially important for games like Thronefall.” — Glib Platonov, cofounder of Doghowl Games

The Games app is going to be a game changer for playing on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The app makes it easy for us to create moments just for groups of friends. The new challenges feature works great and feels natural for our games on Apple Arcade, including our latest release, WHAT THE CLASH?, and we’ve been having a lot of fun with it!” — Tim Garbos, creative director and cofounder of Triband

The Games app is also the best way to experience Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription service with more than 200 award-winning and highly rated games for the whole family, including Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Sneaky Sasquatch, and Mini Motorways.

Launch Favorite Games, Discover New Ones

The Games app allows players to see all the games they have ever downloaded from the App Store for their iPhone and iPad, and brings together all the games they have on Mac.

They can connect any compatible game controller for easy navigation around the app and to launch right into their games. Players can explore personalized recommendations based on games they’ve played, games their friends are playing, and games supporting Game Center features, that can be played together.

Editorial collections also appear in the app to help players find new games, including some of the most exciting games on the App Store, such as Balatro, Crashlands 2, and DREDGE. If they are an Apple Arcade subscriber, players will see curated collections of the best games included in the catalog that help them get the most out of their subscription.

    Play Together

Players now have all their Game Center friends and groups they’ve played with in one place, so they can easily enjoy their games together. They can see their shared gaming history, compare achievements, and send friends invite links and party codes using any messaging app, bringing them right into a competition or multiplayer match.

The Games app introduces challenges, a new way to compete with friends in score-based showdowns. Developers that have Game Center leaderboards for their games can add these unique challenges that are catered to a smaller group of friends. Challenges can turn single-player games into shared experiences with friends, giving them even more ways to rally a group, crown a winner, and have a rematch.

Players can invite friends to challenges by selecting their friends or contacts. Whether competing to see who can survive the most waves of enemies in Thronefall, or who can rack up the highest score in each week’s featured course in Skate City: New York, challenges unlock a whole new level of friendly competition.

Stay Up to Date with In-Game Events

The Games app introduces new features to help developers keep their players in the know about the latest game updates and can’t-miss events. Game pages in the app come to life, highlighting the latest activity for that specific game. Players can see what’s most relevant to them and the games they’re actively playing, front and center, like updates, live events, and timely activity from their friends.

    Availability

The Games app is available for testing starting today through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com, and a public beta will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com. The Games app will be released with the launch of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 this fall as a free software update. Features are subject to change. Some features may not be available in all languages or regions, and availability may vary due to local laws and regulations.
