    Source: Verizon

Headline: Verizon Business launches industry-first GenAI Assistant for small businesses

    What you need to know:

    • Verizon Business Assistant is an easy-to-deploy solution that small businesses can start using immediately to free up time and answer customer questions via text 24/7.
    • Small businesses now have the same opportunity to leverage AI as global enterprises to automate and enhance their customer interactions with a generative AI assistant
    • Small business owners want to make their businesses more efficient through technology, and better connect with new and existing customers, according to Verizon Business’ fifth Annual State of Small Business Report

NEW YORK — Small businesses can now harness the power of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to supercharge their operations. The newest product built directly for small businesses, Verizon Business Assistant is a GenAI-powered text messaging solution designed to help small businesses automate customer interactions and enhance engagement. Business Assistant provides instant text responses to commonly asked questions, learns and improves over time, and enables businesses to offer faster and more efficient customer service.

    How it works:

If a customer texts a bakery to ask about gluten-free options, Business Assistant can instantly respond using GenAI. If it doesn’t yet have the answer, it will then connect to a live employee for assistance. The best part is that it learns from interactions, building a knowledge base that improves over time. Ultimately, Business Assistant reduces the need for human intervention, allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks while ensuring customers get fast, accurate responses.

“Small business owners are constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, and want to use technology to improve operations and better connect with their customers,” said Iris Meijer, Chief Product & Marketing Officer, Verizon Business. “Yet access to that technology and AI tools that work for small businesses can be a challenge, which is where we want to help champion them. Verizon Business Assistant is one example of a solution we’re rolling out to support small business owners. It also addresses an increasing customer demand – particularly from younger generations – for easy digital tools to communicate with businesses on simple matters. This allows small business owners to focus on growing their business while ensuring their customers feel valued and connected to the business.”

Business Assistant is ideal for small business owners looking to:

    • Save time by automating responses to common questions, freeing up time for other tasks.
    • Serve more customers efficiently with the ability to automatically respond to inquiries via text message 24/7.
    • Enhance customer engagement by providing a fast, convenient, and preferred communication channel.
    • Gain insights into customer needs and preferences through interaction data.

    Key features include:

    • Automated Responses: Provides immediate answers to common customer inquiries, freeing up valuable time for business owners and employees.
    • Live Team Member Handoff: Transitions complex inquiries to a live team member for a personalized experience.
    • Continuous Learning: Expands its knowledge base over time, improving accuracy with more interactions.
    • Text Messaging (SMS/MMS): Uses a familiar and convenient channel for easy communication between businesses and customers.
    • Insights Dashboard: Gives business owners valuable data on customer trends and engagement patterns.
    • Easy to set up: The setup is straightforward, easily integrates with existing Verizon mobile devices, and requires no new hardware or software.
    • Customizable: Gives business owners the power to choose how it is trained and what answers are desired for any potential question.

    Source: Verizon

Headline: Verizon & Santander Bank partner to bring Openbank’s digital banking experience to Verizon customers

    • Partnership brings together industry leaders in mobility and banking to provide a secure, seamless digital banking experience to Verizon customers with no fees, low minimum deposits and 24/7 access to funds.
    • Relationship significantly expands Santander’s national scale and reach as part of its strategy to become a leading digital bank with branches and enhances Verizon’s financial service portfolio with added benefits for customers.

Verizon and Santander Bank, N.A., part of the global banking leader Santander1, today announced a multi-year U.S. partnership to bring a new, competitive high yield savings account to millions of Verizon mobile and 5G Home customers. Introducing Verizon + Openbank Savings: a digital high yield savings account with a rate 10 times the national average and the ability to save up to $180 a year on your Verizon bill. Verizon + Openbank Savings joins Verizon’s portfolio of financial services offerings, yet another example of outstanding value and benefits on top of mobile and home connectivity.

“Verizon has long been committed to delivering value and savings beyond wireless services,” said Hans Vestberg, Chairman and CEO of Verizon. “Our scale enables the creation of exclusive financial services solutions and savings accessible only to Verizon customers. Adding the power of Openbank’s secure, simple high yield savings account to our financial offerings provides Verizon customers with unique and differentiated value in the telco and financial services category. This collaboration reinforces our dedication to delivering meaningful and exclusive benefits that support how our customers live, work, play AND save.”

Ana Botín, Banco Santander Executive Chair, added, “By partnering with Verizon, the nation’s leading mobile provider, Openbank can offer a differentiated savings opportunity and digital experience to millions of consumers across the U.S. The Verizon partnership is a significant milestone for Santander as we scale our U.S. business further by bringing Openbank’s secure and simple banking experience and compelling rewards to Verizon’s customers nationwide — backed by a leading global bank that has earned the trust of more than 173 million customers. This is an important step in our growth strategy, and I am excited for what’s ahead.”

Incredible savings with Verizon + Openbank

In addition to maximizing savings with Verizon + Openbank’s competitive interest rate at 10 times the national average, customers can also save on their Verizon wireless bill, starting with a minimum average daily balance of $1,000. The higher the average daily balance, the higher the wireless bill savings — up to $180 per year.

    Signing up is simple

Starting in April, Verizon customers can easily sign up for an Openbank high yield savings account via verizon.com or the MyVerizon app. Customers will then be directed to the Openbank site to complete the account registration process. After opening their account, customers can use the Openbank app to deposit and withdraw funds, check their monthly interest rate and manage their accounts. To learn more, you can visit verizon.com/startsaving.

    Unlocking a savings growth opportunity

Santander US research reveals that while interest rates have been at their highest levels in nearly two decades, many consumers have not taken advantage of high-rate products, such as high yield savings accounts, to grow their savings. The research also found consumers’ top consideration for selecting a banking partner are safety, stability, and 24/7 digital access. Openbank’s digital platform provides a secure, seamless banking experience with no fees, low minimum deposits and 24/7 access to funds and customer support.

The Openbank digital banking platform launched in the U.S. market in late 2024 with a high yield savings account offering that quickly reached more than $3 billion (USD) in deposits. The digital platform is now available nationwide, and will begin offering additional products, such as Certificates of Deposit (CDs) and Checking Accounts, later in 2025. Openbank in the U.S. is a division of Santander Bank, N.A., which is a Member of the FDIC. For more information about Openbank by Santander, including eligibility, please visit openbank.us.

With exclusive savings, top-tier perks, the flexibility to customize your plan with myPlan and myHome, and now the incredible Verizon + Openbank Savings account, it’s never been a better time to be a Verizon customer.

    Source: Microsoft

Headline: Microsoft Ability Summit 2025: Accessibility in the AI era

Today, we hosted the 15th annual Microsoft Ability Summit, with over 20,000 attendees from 164 countries coming together virtually to discuss the future of AI and accessibility. Microsoft has a long-standing commitment to investing in accessibility, grounded in our business model and going back over three decades from the earliest accessibility features in Windows 95 and continuing today with new hardware and software functionalities powered by AI. We are innovating faster than ever before and people with disabilities continue to lead the way.

Accessibility is a fundamental right for people with disabilities and makes technology easier for everyone. We see this reflected in how customers are using Microsoft technologies around the world. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is unlocking workplace productivity like never before, more than 10 million people use Edge each month to have the web Read Aloud, over 1 million people use Immersive Reader to make webpages easier to read and partners like Tobii Dynavox and Special Olympics are bringing AI to people with disabilities globally. And these are just some of the highlights of what we shared today!

Here’s a quick summary of the new accessibility products, features and programs announced at the 2025 Ability Summit.

    What’s new in 2025?

We announced that the Xbox Adaptive Joystick is now available for purchase exclusively at Microsoft Store. With more than 429 million players with disabilities worldwide, we know each player has unique needs and preferences for how they choose to play. The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a singular, wired controller primarily designed to meet the needs of players with limited mobility. Its versatility helps players seamlessly incorporate it into their existing gaming setups. Built with the Gaming and Disability community who inform the development of Xbox products from the beginning. The joystick joins our family of adaptive accessories including the mouse, pen, adaptive kit and Xbox Adaptive Controller. For more details visit Xbox Support.

And all our Microsoft hardware comes in packaging designed to be accessible and sustainable. No more plastic clamshells! To help others with accessible packaging, today at the Summit, the Packaging and Content Team at Microsoft published its Accessible Packaging Design Guide, which offers practical guidelines, best practices and strategies to create accessible packaging and foster a trusted customer experience.

At the Summit, Microsoft teams and partners also shared ways they are working to further advance accessibility through technology:

    • Tobii Dynavox is integrating Microsoft Neural Voice, a capability of Azure AI Speech, into their assistive communication solutions. This AI-powered feature gives more personal options for individuals who use assistive communication devices using eye gaze. Neural Voices are available in over 50 languages within their apps TD Talk and TD Phone.
    • Microsoft Teams will improve for those using Sign Language View. Later this year, Teams will be able to identify when someone is using sign language and feature them prominently as a speaker in the meeting. These video customizations are part of our ongoing product development to help deliver clear and accessible communication for everyone.
    • Copilot is powering neurodiverse talent. Recently, an EY study found that Copilot helped 76% of neurodiverse employees perform better at work by enhancing communication, memory recall and focus. At the Summit, we shared how new simple features like Team Reflow and PowerPoint Designer are helping people do their work. See four early adopters of Copilot in New York share their stories.

    YouTube Video

    • AI comes to Narrator. Rich image descriptions powered by AI will be coming to Narrator in Windows Insider Preview this spring and Azure AI Foundry announced new UI improvements to reduce cognitive load.
    • Over 5 million learners around the world have participated in our Accessibility Skilling program and we’re grateful to our partners including Teach Access, Computacenter UK and the City of New York. The free, virtual training includes the latest on AI and is available for organizations to use in their learning management systems.
    • Speech recognition improved up to 60%. The Speech Accessibility Project, led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, unlocked a breakthrough improving accuracy gains for non-standard speech, and the Azure platform team demonstrated how developers can leverage GitHub Copilot to write accessible code.
    • Special Olympics shared how Copilot has been a game-changing training companion for their coaches and athletes with intellectual and development disabilities for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

All this progress is possible because of the people who design technology with accessibility in mind. In this way, technology benefits everyone, creating a more productive and efficient workplace. It is beautiful to see that reflected in this profile of Dave Dame, Senior Director of Accessibility and Human Factors at Microsoft, where he shared how accessible technology helps him thrive as a leader.

    Onward

For over 30 years, Microsoft has focused on accessibility in our products. Accessibility makes our tools and technologies easier for everyone and accelerates innovation for the world. From the introduction of Sticky Keys and speech recognition in Windows 95 to Seeing AI in 2016 and beyond, accessibility innovations have benefited people in ways we designed for and ways we could have never expected. Just think about how closed captions are now invaluable for everyone watching videos and calls.

AI has the potential to create significant advancements across every sector of our economy and society. We will continue to be grounded and responsible in our approach as we work to get the latest technology to the people who can benefit from it the most.

Whether this is your first or fifteenth Ability Summit, thank you for joining and we hope you picked up a new feature, skill or nugget that helps you, your community or your organization get the most out of technology. All content will be available to watch after the event.

    Let’s move forward together.

GlobalData highlights disease prevention with World Oral Health Day

    Posted in Medical Devices

March 20 marks World Oral Health Day, an important global event aiming to raise awareness about the importance of oral health and its impact on overall well-being. Led by the FDI World Dental Federation, the annual observance encourages individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to act towards improving oral hygiene. Better oral hygiene can help reduce the burden of dental diseases worldwide, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Oral health plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, yet it is often overlooked. Poor oral hygiene can lead to various dental issues, such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. However, the consequences extend beyond the mouth. Research has established strong links between oral health and systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and even adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Alexandra Murdoch, Senior Medical Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The theme for World Oral Health Day 2024, ‘A Happy Mouth, A Happy Body,’ underscores the connection between a healthy smile and overall well-being. Through global campaigns, educational initiatives, and community outreach, the day emphasizes the need for proper oral care, access to dental services, and policies that support good oral health habits.”

Neglecting oral health can have serious implications, not only for the teeth and gums but also for overall health. Some of the diseases and conditions linked to poor oral hygiene include oral cancer, which affects the lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat, often linked to risk factors like tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Poor oral hygiene can also be linked to diabetes complications, as those with diabetes are more prone to gum disease due to weakened immunity and poor blood sugar control.

One of the most common diseases associated with poor oral health is periodontal disease or gum disease. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, beginning with gingivitis and potentially progressing to periodontitis, leading to bone and tissue damage.

According to GlobalData, over 280,000 people in the US were diagnosed with periodontitis in 2024. Of these cases, 27.9% of patients needed dental implants.

Murdoch continues: “World Oral Health Day serves as a reminder of the essential steps everyone should take to maintain a healthy mouth and prevent disease, including brushing teeth, flossing, going to the dentist, limiting sugary foods and tobacco, and staying hydrated.”

Poor oral hygiene can have significant implications for the dental devices market, as it can increase the need for dental implants, bridges, dentures and crowns.

GlobalData forecasts the dental implants & abutments market to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6% in the next 10 years, while the prefabricated crowns & bridges market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3% in the next 10 years.

Murdoch concludes: “World Oral Health Day brings attention to an often-overlooked issue, even though poor oral hygiene can lead to severe consequences. Oral hygiene is driving demand for restorative and preventative solutions in the dental market, and even outside of dental devices in more severe cases.”

Renewables to play essential role in product portfolio of oil and gas companies, says GlobalData

    Posted in Oil & Gas

Global power generation is increasingly shifting toward renewable sources, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels. While global energy generation has risen by around 30% in the past ten years, renewable energy has nearly doubled over this timeframe. With the share of renewables in the global energy mix forecast to reach over 40% by 2030, it is expected to play a key role in the product portfolios of oil and gas companies, which are relatively new entrants in the space, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s Strategic Intelligence report, “Renewable Energy in Oil & Gas,” evaluates the role of oil and gas players in the renewable energy theme. It further benchmarks the efforts of oil majors, such as TotalEnergies, BP, Shell, Petrobras, Equinor, Eni, and Repsol, in the renewable energy value chain.

Ravindra Puranik, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The oil and gas industry—including producers, service providers, and contractors—are relatively new entrants in renewable energy. Despite this, they are making notable movements in the competitive landscape for renewable energy, particularly in offshore wind. TotalEnergies is anticipated to be the fourth largest producer of wind energy globally towards the end of this decade, if all its proposed projects go online. Even BP, Shell, and several other European players are building considerable renewable power capacity.”

Lately, companies have somewhat slowed down the pace of investments flowing into renewable energy over the past year. While BP recently withdrew its permit application for its Beacon Wind project offshore New York, Equinor has lowered its renewable energy targets citing cost pressures.

Puranik continues: “Nevertheless, they still fare a lot better than the notable US-based oil majors, ExxonMobil and Chevron, that are clear laggards in the renewable energy segment. These two companies have negligible capacity footprint in this theme and have no plans to alter this scenario in the near future.”

Global power output has nearly doubled over the years, from around 14,500 TWh in 2000. The global power generation is estimated to reach around 31,000 TWh and rise further to 37,000 TWh by 2030, according to GlobalData.

Puranik concludes: “This growth is primarily driven by the rising electrification in emerging markets and the increasing energy demand from data centers, cryptocurrency miners, and other expanding digital technologies. Additionally, the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in Europe, the US, and China, where their market penetration is higher, is contributing to the rising demand for power.

“Considering all this, it is logical for energy companies to shift towards alternate, emission-friendly sources, such as solar and wind power. Early adopters of renewable energy may secure long-term sustainability in the evolving energy landscape.”

    Source: African Development Bank Group

The African Development Bank Group, African Water Facility, and the Association of European Development Finance Institutions will host a high-level event to generate investment for water and sanitation services in Africa. Taking place on 18 March 2025 in Brussels, the event will bring together development finance institutions, private sector investors, and philanthropic organizations.

During the event, the African Development Bank and African Water Facility will showcase investment-ready projects and those in their pipeline, offering opportunities for investors and development financiers to support high-impact water and sanitation projects, including homegrown solutions that will drive economic growth, social stability, and public health improvements across Africa.

    Why This Matters

Africa faces significant water and sanitation challenges, amplified by increasing pressure on strained water resources by the continent’s growing population, which is expected to double by 2050. Currently, 411 million people lack access to safe drinking water, 779 million are without essential sanitation services, and 839 million do not have access to basic hygiene services, according to a 2020 report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO).

This lack of access contributes to severe public health challenges, including the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, which have caused over 400,000 deaths annually on the continent, according to the WHO.

The economic cost of inadequate access to water and sanitation is also high. Inadequate sanitation alone results in losses of up to $5.5 billion per year in sub-Saharan Africa due to healthcare costs and lost productivity. However, investing in climate-resilient water and sanitation services could yield at least $7 in economic returns for every $1 spent.

“Water and sanitation infrastructure is fundamental to economic growth. Investing in it is not only a necessity, but good business sense. By securing funding for high-impact projects, we can create jobs, improve public health, and grow local economies,” said Mtchera Chirwa, Director for Water Development and Sanitation at the African Development Bank and Coordinator of African Water Facility.

Beyond funding, the event will facilitate discussions on public-private partnerships, blended finance models, and innovative financing mechanisms to accelerate progress in achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 – universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.

Association of European Development Finance Institutions CEO David Kuijper said. “As stakeholders in development, together, we have the resources to make transformative change happen. The Association of European Development Finance Institutions values the partnership with the African Development Bank and African Water Facility to convene this event to find financial and technical resources for solutions through projects already on the market in Africa.”

Automotive dealers need to adapt to technological advancements to remain competitive, says GlobalData

    Posted in Automotive

The automotive industry is on the brink of a significant transformation as digital technologies reshape the way vehicles are bought and sold. The rise of online car buying platforms is not merely a trend; it represents a fundamental shift in consumer behavior and expectations. This shift was further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted lockdowns and disrupted global supply chains, leading to a sharp decline in physical car sales. As consumer expectations evolve and technology continues to advance, both dealers and manufacturers must adapt to remain competitive, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Madhuchhanda Palit, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The transition to online car buying has fundamentally altered consumer expectations. Today’s buyers demand a seamless, digital-first experience akin to what they encounter in other retail sectors. This shift compels traditional dealerships to enhance their online presence and digital sales capabilities.

“As consumers grow accustomed to the convenience of browsing and purchasing vehicles from home, dealerships must innovate to meet these new standards for transparency and accessibility. The challenge lies in balancing the trust and personal touch of in-person interactions with the efficiency of online transactions. Those who can successfully integrate these elements will likely thrive in this evolving market.”

Technological advancements are at the forefront of the digital transformation in the automotive industry. The emergence of virtual showrooms, augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the car-buying experience.

Virtual showrooms allow consumers to explore vehicles in immersive 360-degree views, while AR applications enable potential buyers to visualize cars in their own environments. AI-driven tools enhance personalization, guiding consumers through the buying process with tailored recommendations. These technologies not only improve the user experience but also streamline operations for dealerships, making the sales process more efficient. As these innovations continue to evolve, they will play a crucial role in shaping the future of automotive commerce.

Palit continues: “Looking ahead, the automotive market is poised for considerable growth driven by the ongoing digital transformation. The integration of advanced technologies is expected to redefine purchasing methods, with predictions of even more sophisticated AI applications and enhanced online experiences. Traditional dealerships have the opportunity to adopt hybrid models that blend online convenience with the benefits of in-person service. Collaborations, such as Hyundai’s recent partnership with Amazon to facilitate online vehicle sales, exemplify how traditional players can adapt to this new landscape. As the industry embraces these changes, it is essential for stakeholders to remain agile and responsive to evolving consumer preferences.”

Palit concludes: “The digital transformation of the automotive industry is not just a passing phase; it is a significant shift that will shape the future of the market. As the industry adapts to this digital revolution, both consumers and dealerships must navigate a new landscape that promises unprecedented convenience and efficiency.

“The path forward will require a commitment to innovation, a focus on enhancing the customer experience, and an openness to new business models. While the future remains uncertain, the potential for growth and transformation in the automotive sector is considerable, paving the way for a more connected and efficient marketplace.”

India, Japan and UAE defy global deal downturn in early 2025, reveals GlobalData

    Posted in Business Fundamentals

The global deal landscape has slowed during the first two months of 2025, with overall deal volume dropping 9% compared to the same period last year. Europe has seen a sharp contraction, while India, Japan and the UAE have shown resilience despite the broader downturn, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “This decline is indicative of a challenging environment, influenced by factors such as geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures and macroeconomic conditions that have dampened deal-making sentiments.”

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database revealed that all the deal types under the coverage, mergers & acquisitions (M&A), private equity and venture financing, registered decline in volume during January-February 2025 compared to January-February 2024.

M&A deal volume has seen a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of about 9% during January-February 2025, signaling a cautious approach from businesses that may be reevaluating their growth strategies amid the uncertainty.

Similarly, the number of private equity deals have contracted by about 3%, suggesting that investors are becoming more selective in their investments, possibly prioritizing quality over quantity in the current market conditions.

Venture financing deals have also taken a hit, with the YoY decline in volume pegged at about 9%, reflecting a tightening of capital availability for startups and emerging companies, which often rely on such funding to fuel innovation and growth.

Bose adds: “Even though the intensity varied widely but all the regions experienced subdued deal activity during the review period. Meanwhile, the trend remained a mixed bag among different countries with some showcasing improvement in deal volume while some experiencing decline.”

Europe has been particularly hard hit, with a staggering YoY decline of around 16%. This downturn is reflective of the ongoing economic challenges faced by the region, including energy crises and inflation, which have created an uncertain investment climate.

In contrast, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and African region have shown relative resilience, with modest declines of around 4%, 8% and 4%, respectively. Meanwhile South and Central America have experienced a contraction of around 13%.

The US, while still leading in deal volume, has seen a decline of around 3%. The UK and China, however, have faced more significant challenges, with decline of around 20% each. Notably, India, Japan and the UAE have bucked the trend and showcased improvement in deal activity during the review period.

Bose concludes: “While global deal activity slows, markets like India, Japan, and the UAE show resilience, driven by stable economies and demand for innovation. Going forward, we may see a more region-specific deal landscape, with investors focusing on growth opportunities in emerging markets while exercising caution in more uncertain economies.”
