  • MIL-OSI Security: Man jailed for drug and knife offences after routine stop and search

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A man has been jailed after a routine stop and search conducted by Met Police officers found him to be carrying drugs and a locking knife.

Ali Al-Hindawi, 29 (16.10.95) of Askew Road, Hammersmith, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 18 March, where he was sentenced to two years and two months in prison.

On the evening of Sunday, 16 February, officers patrolling Leicester Square and Coventry Street noticed Al-Hindawi acting suspiciously on an e-bike, paying close attention to people walking by.

Working with the Town Centre Team, Al-Hindawi’s movements were monitored on CCTV cameras before he was stopped by officers on Charing Cross Road. He was found to be concealing a bag under his jacket containing cannabis, methyl amphetamine and other illegal substances.

He also admitted having a locking knife hidden inside one of his pockets and was arrested.

Further investigations involved a search of his home in Hammersmith, where a larger consignment of drugs was seized, along with equipment used in drug supply.

Al-Hindawi pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of a bladed article at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 18 February.

Inspector Ryan Allister, of the West End Policing Team, who led the investigation, said:

“This investigation is a great example of the important role stop and search plays in helping the Met bring criminals to justice, protect the communities we serve, and make people safer.

“In this case, officers used their stop and search powers impeccably and progressed the investigation at speed to gather all the evidence required to charge Al-Hindawi.

“Their efforts have not only resulted in a dangerous individual operating in central London being jailed, but also taken a large quantity of drugs and a knife off our streets.”

The Met published a new Stop and Search Charter at the end of last month, shaping the future of how one of policing’s most effective tactics is used in London.

The charter, which was co-produced with communities, is the product of 18 months of engagement with more than 8,500 Londoners of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.

Over the past four years, 17,500 weapons were seized as a result of stop and search, including at least 3,500 in 2024. Polling shows that up to 68 per cent of Londoners, including young Londoners, support its use.

Nagano Lean Body Tonic: Support your wellness journey naturally.

The Science Behind Nagano Tonic: How Traditional Ingredients Support Modern Metabolic Health

As we age, our metabolism slows down, energy levels decline, and maintaining a healthy weight becomes more difficult. Nagano Tonic, a unique blend of traditional botanical ingredients inspired by Japanese and Eastern medicine, is gaining attention for its potential to support metabolism, thermogenesis, and weight management. Nevertheless, what does the science say?

This article explores the research-backed mechanisms of Nagano Tonic’s key ingredients—from green tea and ginger to camu camu and ashwagandha—and how they contribute to metabolic health, inflammation reduction, and body composition.

    Understanding the Aging-Metabolism Connection

Aging naturally reduces basal metabolic rate (BMR)—the number of calories our bodies burn at rest. Studies show that this decline in BMR is primarily due to a loss in lean muscle mass and hormonal shifts. A 1993 study by Shimokata and Kuzuya documented these changes, revealing that metabolic efficiency decreases with age, especially without proper dietary and activity adjustments.

A 1998 paper in Metabolism by Piers et al. confirmed that older adults exhibit reduced energy expenditure, even when accounting for body composition. This highlights the importance of interventions that can reignite metabolic activity—something Nagano Tonic aims to do.

    Thermogenesis: Your Inner Furnace

One of the most promising approaches to boosting metabolism is through thermogenesis, the body’s process of heat production that burns calories. According to Hursel and Westerterp-Plantenga (2010), specific food-derived bioactives can stimulate thermogenesis, aiding weight control. Nagano Tonic includes several such thermogenic compounds.

Green Tea Extract: A Proven Metabolic Enhancer

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most studied ingredients for metabolism. Its active polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have significantly boosted thermogenesis and fat oxidation. According to Ohishi et al. (2021), green tea polyphenols enhance metabolism and offer potent antioxidant protection.

A 2016 clinical trial by Chen et al. found that high-dose green tea extract led to meaningful weight loss and improved lipid profiles in overweight adults. Another study (Campbell et al., 2016) demonstrated increased resting metabolic rate in women after a single dose of a green tea thermogenic supplement.

Additionally, green tea has been declared safe in regulated doses, according to Jiang Hu et al. (2018), making it an effective and reliable cornerstone of Nagano Tonic’s formula.

    Ginger: Igniting Energy Expenditure

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) offers more than just flavor—it is a metabolism booster supported by multiple randomized controlled trials. A 2019 meta-analysis by Maharlouei et al. found that ginger significantly reduced body weight and waist-to-hip ratio in overweight individuals.

In rodent studies (Sayed et al., 2020), ginger water improved energy expenditure and reduced fat accumulation. Furthermore, a comprehensive 2020 review by Nguyen et al. highlighted ginger’s thermogenic, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects, supporting its role in holistic metabolic health.

    Camu Camu: A Gut-Microbiome Ally

A lesser-known superfruit, Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia), offers remarkable metabolic benefits by modulating the gut microbiota. Research published in Gut (Anhê et al., 2019) found that camu camu supplementation altered the composition of gut microbes to prevent obesity in mice.

Additionally, its high levels of vitamin C and polyphenols exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as Inoue et al. (2008) demonstrated, further supporting metabolic balance and immune resilience.

Bitter Melon: The Natural Insulin Sensitizer

Momordica charantia, or bitter melon, is traditionally used for blood sugar regulation—modern science backs this up. A 2013 review by Joseph and Jini reported that bitter melon improves insulin sensitivity, reduces blood glucose, and aids lipid metabolism.

Bitter melon can indirectly reduce fat accumulation and improve energy utilization by improving glucose control and inflammation, making it a brilliant addition to Nagano Tonic.

    Anti-Inflammatory Ingredients for Metabolic Repair

Chronic low-grade inflammation, marked by elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), is both a cause and effect of obesity. A 2020 study by Qiling Li et al. confirmed that high CRP levels contribute to adult-onset obesity through inflammatory pathways.

Nagano Tonic tackles this head-on with anti-inflammatory botanicals like cinnamon, turmeric, and ashwagandha.

Cinnamon: A Spice for Fat Regulation

Cinnamon has demonstrated the ability to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. Hamidpour et al. (2015) discussed cinnamon’s impact on angiogenesis and metabolic health, while a 2020 meta-analysis by Mousavi et al. linked cinnamon supplementation with significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and fat mass.

    Turmeric: Anti-Gout and Anti-Fatigue Properties

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been shown to reduce inflammation markers and oxidative stress. Kiyani et al. (2019) explored its benefits in gout and inflammation, but its antioxidant power also contributes to improved metabolic health, particularly in those dealing with obesity-linked inflammation.

    Ashwagandha: Adaptogenic Stress Support

Chronic stress is another hidden trigger for weight gain. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, has shown promise in stress reduction and weight management. In a 2017 study, Choudhary et al. found that ashwagandha supplementation reduced cortisol levels and supported healthy body composition under chronic stress conditions.

A 2019 clinical trial published in Cureus further confirmed its anxiolytic and energy-boosting effects, which are key to maintaining a sustainable, active lifestyle as we age.

Ginseng and Eleuthero: Traditional Tonics with Modern Benefits

    Korean Red Ginseng

A study by Song et al. (2014) demonstrated that Korean red ginseng alters gut microbiota in a way that positively influences obesity markers. Ginseng also lowers CRP levels, as noted in a 2019 meta-analysis by Saboori et al., further supporting its inclusion in Nagano Tonic’s anti-inflammatory arsenal.

    Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian Ginseng)

This herb, known as Siberian ginseng, boosts physical endurance and metabolic efficiency. A study by Kuo et al. (2010) showed improved human endurance capacity, while further analysis by Huang et al. (2011) highlighted its anti-fatigue benefits. Hashimoto et al. (2020) found that Eleuthero modulates metabolic proteins in fat and muscle cells, supporting its role in energy regulation.

    Acerola & Alfalfa: Micronutrient-Dense Enhancers

    Acerola Cherry

Acerola (Malpighia emarginata) is an underutilized superfruit rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, and antioxidants. Prakash and Baskaran (2018) state that its bioactive compounds support immune function, oxidative stress reduction, and collagen synthesis, indirectly contributing to a healthier metabolism.

    Alfalfa

Often overlooked, alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has demonstrated blood glucose-lowering properties in animal and human studies. Amraie et al. (2015) showed that alfalfa extracts help regulate blood sugar and lipids. Raeeszadeh et al. (2021) noted its neuroprotective and antioxidant effects, which benefit aging adults with metabolic syndrome.

Mangosteen and Inulin: Gut & Glucose Optimization

    Mangosteen Extract

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit with potent xanthones and shows strong insulin-sensitizing effects. A 2018 randomized trial by Watanabe et al. found that mangosteen improved insulin sensitivity and supported weight loss in obese women, likely through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.

Inulin: The Fiber for Fat Loss

Inulin, a prebiotic fiber, has been shown to reduce visceral fat and improve metabolic profiles. A 2015 randomized trial by Guess et al. demonstrated that inulin supplementation led to meaningful reductions in weight and ectopic fat among prediabetic individuals. By feeding healthy gut bacteria, inulin supports improved digestion, hormone balance, and energy metabolism.

Nagano Lean Body Tonic: Inspired by nature, designed for you.

    Nagano Tonic’s Synergistic Science

Nagano Tonic is more than a blend of exotic ingredients—it is a strategic, science-backed formula that targets the root causes of slow metabolism, weight gain, inflammation, and energy depletion.

Each component contributes to a comprehensive metabolic revival, from the thermogenic effects of green tea and ginger to the gut-boosting benefits of camu camu, inulin, and ginseng. Meanwhile, anti-inflammatory and adaptogenic ingredients like turmeric, cinnamon, and ashwagandha protect against modern lifestyle stressors and aging-related metabolic decline.

  • MIL-OSI: Sunrun and PG&E Harness Home Storage and Solar to Alleviate Local Grid Constraints

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SAN FRANCISCO, March 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sunrun (Nasdaq: RUN), the nation’s leading provider of clean energy as a subscription service, today announced a new innovative partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). The collaboration will utilize hundreds of Sunrun solar-plus-storage customer homes to deliver targeted load relief to neighborhoods identified with highly constrained electric grids. The goal of this approach is to help avoid or defer growth-related distribution investments, reducing costs for ratepayers.

The Sunrun-operated program will be activated for up to 100 hours from June through October and include approximately 600 Sunrun customers residing in sections of PG&E’s service area that are experiencing distribution circuit constraints.

“Customers with home batteries are a solution to alleviating strain on our electric grid,” said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. “We’re experiencing a fundamental shift as homes are no longer just energy consumers. With storage and solar, they become powerful grid assets, delivering affordable, reliable power exactly when and where it’s needed for communities and across the grid.”

Sunrun’s Local PeakShift Power program is part of PG&E’s 2025 Seasonal Aggregation of Versatile Energy (SAVE) virtual power plant. In this demonstration, Sunrun will receive information from PG&E on distribution grid needs and, in turn, help PG&E analyze the contributions of distributed energy resources. This collaboration will support the development of new long-term programs to meet the California Energy Commission’s load-shifting goals while also enhancing local reliability.

“Virtual power plants play a significant role in California’s clean energy future and we’re proud of our customers who are leading the charge with their clean energy adoption. Every day, we’re looking at new and better ways to deliver for our hometowns while ensuring safety, reliability and resiliency for our customers,” said Patti Poppe, CEO of PG&E Corporation.

The delivery of targeted power to local PG&E circuits will leverage Sunrun’s deep existing partnerships with leading companies Tesla and Lunar Energy. Sunrun will use an advanced application of Tesla’s grid services platform to optimize Powerwall batteries to provide an exact amount of power at specific times to different locations. Similarly, Sunrun will leverage Lunar Energy’s AI-enabled forecasting through its Gridshare software platform to precisely dispatch various non-Tesla battery types to meet local grid needs.

This collaboration marks the second time Sunrun and PG&E have partnered to create a virtual power plant to support California’s power grid. Both partnerships highlight Sunrun’s ability to design and rapidly deploy virtual power plants that meet the specific needs of grid operators. Local PeakShift Power will be operationalized in just months, demonstrating the speed and efficiency of Sunrun’s virtual power plant capabilities.

Sunrun customers enrolled in Local PeakShift Power will receive a one-time payment of $150 per battery for sharing their stored solar energy with their communities, while Sunrun will be compensated for managing battery dispatches. Enrolled batteries will always retain at least a 20% backup reserve to ensure power availability at customers’ homes in the event of a power outage.

With 156,000 residential battery systems across the country, Sunrun can support targeted utility initiatives and statewide virtual power plant programs. Sunrun’s grid services platform and subscription model allow for flexibility when it comes to enrolling customers in different programs in order to achieve the highest value for the company, its customers, and the grid.

  • MIL-OSI USA: 10 Questions With Women’s Sports Expert Risa Isard

    Source: US State of Connecticut

In our recurring 10 Questions series, the Neag School of Education catches up with students, alumni, faculty, and others throughout the year to offer a glimpse into their Neag School experience and their current career, research, or community activities.

Assistant professor Risa Isard is a trailblazer in the sport industry, dedicating her career to advancing equity in women’s sports. A researcher and consultant, she explores how stigma shapes the experiences of athletes, executives, and organizations. Her work sheds light on the economic, historical, and sociocultural forces that impact women’s sports, advocating for marginalized communities, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color.

Risa Isard at the WNBA All-Star weekend in July 2024. (Contributed photo)

Isard’s expertise is widely recognized — her insights have been featured by the SXSW festival, MSNBC, the New York Times, ESPN, and more. As a thought leader, she has published in Sports Business Journal, Quartz, and espnW, influencing industry policies and sparking change. Beyond research, Isard is the founder of RISport, consulting for sport organizations on issues that matter to them most. Previously, she played a pivotal role at the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society Program, where she launched national initiatives, hosted leaders such as Michelle Obama and Billie Jean King, and created tools to expand access to sports. She has also held sport industry roles with Duke women’s basketball, the Phoenix Mercury, soccer legend Brandi Chastain’s foundation, national nonprofit KABOOM!, and the Fresno Grizzlies minor league baseball team.

With a Ph.D. in Management from UMass Amherst and a specialized bachelor’s degree from Duke, Isard and her journey are a testament to the power of sports as a vehicle for social change.

Q: Can you share examples from your research on how stigma influences the experience of stakeholders in women’s sports?

A: Despite progress, stigma continues to impact professionals and fans in women’s sports. Employees in women’s sport face condescending remarks, such as being asked if they plan to work for a men’s team next year, suggesting that a role with the women’s team is not an achievement. Fans struggle to access games on TV or convince bars to air matches. These experiences stem from stigmas that affect investment, visibility, and respect, reinforcing the idea that women’s sports are less valuable. Yet, the passion of athletes, employees, and fans remains strong, fueling the fight for recognition and equality.

Q: What are some effective strategies for advancing equity in sports organizations?

A: My study on WNBA media coverage revealed that Black athletes, who comprised 80% of the league’s athletes and won 80% of postseason awards, received only half the media coverage of their white teammates. This research led to industry-wide discussions and tangible changes in organizations’ practices, resulting in more coverage for women athletes and Black athletes in women’s sports. By tracking disparities and committing to coverage that reflects the talent on the court, organizations can create systemic change. Intentional strategies like these help level the playing field for all athletes in women’s sports.

Q: How does intersectional diversity shape decision-making and culture within sports organizations?

A: That same study from above shows that Black WNBA athletes with a more masculine gender presentation receive the least media coverage, while white athletes with similar gender expressions receive the most. This highlights the need for an intersectional approach to understand practices in the sport industry. Media visibility translates into financial opportunities — endorsement deals depend in part on coverage, making representation crucial for an athlete’s career. Addressing these disparities can help advance social change, like closing the wealth gap.

By tracking disparities and committing to coverage that reflects the talent on the court, organizations can create systemic change. &#8212 Risa Isard, assistant professor

Q: What enduring stigmas persist in women’s sports and how can the industry address them?

A: Women’s sports still battle misconceptions about their value and the athleticism they showcase, which impact player salaries, sponsorships, media coverage, and more. Changing this requires treating women’s sports with the same respect as men’s, which means investing in their growth and recognizing their commercial successes. Supporting women athletes isn’t just about fairness — it’s also a smart business move that drives profitability and advances the industry.

Q: How should marketing and management strategies differ when promoting women’s sports, as compared to men’s sports?

A: Women’s sports fans engage differently than men’s sports fans. For example, they tend to be more loyal and supportive of sponsors. They also are far more likely to consume their sports alone. This means marketing approaches should reflect fans’ unique behaviors rather than mimicking men’s sports strategies. Additionally, women’s teams face distinct challenges shaped by historical and societal factors, which can affect employees. Understanding these differences and responding to them are the keys to effective growth and investment in women’s sports.

Q: How do you balance academic research with actionable insights for the sports industry?

A: My research is shaped by real-world industry experiences and conversations, ensuring it addresses pressing issues. Once complete, I prioritize making my findings accessible — through op-eds in trade journals and via social media — so that decision-makers can apply research-driven insights. I am also proud to be a member of The Collective Think Tank, an initiative by global sport and entertainment agency Wasserman. This bridge between academia and industry helps sports professionals implement meaningful change.

Supporting women athletes isn’t just about fairness — it’s also a smart business move that drives profitability and advances the industry. &#8212 Risa Isard, assistant professor

Q: Why do you think your research is important to the sports industry?

A: My work aims to encourage the industry to grow in profitability through equity-driven business practices. Women’s sports have long been undervalued, but with research-backed strategies, we can create a future where fairness and commercial success go hand in hand. I hope my contributions help elevate women’s sports and build on the legacy of those fighting for progress.

Q: Why did you decide to join UConn’s Neag School of Education?

A: UConn has been a leader in supporting women’s sports, creating an environment where gender equity is normalized. This unique culture provides an ideal setting to study and influence the future of women’s sports while engaging with students who will shape the industry.

Q: How can UConn positively impact the future of women’s sports?

A: UConn’s early investment in women’s sports offers a model for other programs. By sharing successful strategies with the NCAA and beyond, UConn can help shape best practices for growing and sustaining women’s sports at all levels.

Q: What trends in women’s sports do you find most promising and how can stakeholders build upon them?

A: Women’s sports are expanding rapidly — leagues like the NWSL and WNBA are growing, while new leagues in hockey, volleyball, and softball emerge. Increased media coverage, investment, and purpose-built stadiums contribute to this momentum. With continued financial backing and visibility, women’s sports can reach new heights, solidifying their place in the broader sports industry.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sols 4486-4487: Ankle-Breaking Kind of Terrain!

    Source: NASA

Written by Catherine O’Connell-Cooper, Planetary Geologist at University of New Brunswick

Earth planning date: Wednesday, March 19, 2025
This terrain is a tricky drive, with rocks angled chaotically all around. One of our geologists remarked that they wouldn’t like to even walk over this without solid boots coming way up over the ankles — this is definitely the kind of terrain to result in twisted and broken ankles! So it wasn’t too unexpected that the drive we had planned on Monday cut short after 18 meters (about 59 feet). Fortunately, we ended up both at a workspace with abundant bedrock and in an orientation that allowed us to pass SRAP (our “Slip Risk Assessment Process”).
The rover planners were quickly able to find a spot to brush, so we have a coordinated target on “Palm Grove,” one of the laminated rocks in the lower half of the accompanying image. APXS and MAHLI will look at this target on the first sol of the plan, and then ChemCam LIBS and Mastcam will look at it on the second sol. Although the bulk of the bedrock is relatively nodule free, ChemCam will look at the nodular target “Refugio” to compare to the more dominant, nodule-poor bedrock.
On Monday, our workspace included some very interesting layers in the bedrock that might represent preserved sand ripples, but sadly, as Conor reported on Monday, we didn’t pass SRAP, which precluded any contact science. However, today we ended up near rocks that had similar layer geometry, and will acquire a MAHLI “Dog’s Eye” or mosaic image of these rocks at “Duna Vista” and two Mastcam 5×3 mosaics (“Bayside Trail” and “Oso Flaco”) on other examples.
Mastcam is taking several other images here. A 14×3 mosaic will capture the “nearfield” or area close to the rover, and a set of four further images focus on four distinct trough features, to help us better understand ongoing modification of the surface. Further afield, the “Quartz Hill” and “Pino Alto” mosaics look at areas of fragmented bedrock which may be similar to the “Humber Park” outcrop we analyzed this past weekend. Even further from the rover, ChemCam will acquire RMI (Remote Micro Imager) images of the “Boxworks” and an almost circular depression (“Torote Bowl”) whose origin is not clear.
The environmental theme group (ENV) planned a Mastcam tau (to look at dust in the atmosphere) and a Navcam dust-devil survey (to look for dust devils!) for the first sol of the plan. On the second sol, we fill out the movies with Navcam movies looking toward the south of the crater (suprahorizon, cloud shadow, and zenith movies) and a Mastcam sky survey.
In between the movies on the second sol, our drive is planned to take us another 34 meters (about 112 feet)… but we will have to see how far our intrepid rover will make it on this tricky terrain. Slow and steady will win this race!

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Television personality Ant Middleton banned as company director over unpaid taxes

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

Television personality Ant Middleton banned as company director over unpaid taxes

His company owed more than £1 million in corporation tax and VAT when it went into liquidation

    • Television personality and adventurer Ant Middleton has been banned as a director after his Sway and Starting Limited company failed to pay more than £1 million in tax

    • In the same period, more than £4.5 million was paid into the company’s accounts, indicating it had enough income to pay the tax it owed in full

    • His wife, Emilie Middleton, has also been disqualified as a company director for four years following investigations by the Insolvency Service

    • The pair ended up owing their company almost £3 million at the time of liquidation due to an overdrawn director’s loan account

Television personality Ant Middleton has been banned as a director after his company failed to pay more than £1 million in tax.

The former SAS: Who Dares Wins chief instructor was the director of Sway and Starting Limited along with his wife, Emilie Middleton. The company, which was described as offering media representation services, was set up to manage income from his television and media work.

But both the directors failed to ensure the company paid more than £300,000 in VAT and over £800,000 in corporation tax between 2019 and 2022.

This was despite more than £4.5 million being paid into the company’s accounts from 2020 to 2022.

The pair had also taken out almost £3 million from the company in the form of a director’s loan account by the time the company went into liquidation in December 2022.

Ant Middleton later agreed to repay £300,000 of the director’s loan as a full and final settlement with the liquidator.

The Middletons, both 44 and with correspondence addresses in Chelmsford, Essex, have been banned as company directors for four years.

Dave Magrath, Director of Investigation and Enforcement Services at the Insolvency Service, said:

Companies not paying the tax they should deprives the government of the money it needs to pay for the country’s defence services, our NHS, schools and universities, and transport systems.

Ant and Emilie Middleton had legal and financial duties as directors to ensure their company paid the corporation tax and VAT it owed. Instead, they were taking millions of pounds out of the company at that time.

This disqualification should serve as a deterrent to other directors that if you do not pay your taxes while directing money elsewhere, you are at risk of being banned.

Ant Middleton formed Sway and Starting in September 2014, with his wife becoming a director of the company in May 2019.

The company, previously known as Middleton Global Limited, failed to pay any of the £869,351 in corporation tax it owed between September 2019 and March 2021.

Sway and Starting also only paid £267,443 in VAT out of a total of £651,961 it owed between March 2020 and September 2022, leaving £384,518 unpaid.

Insolvency Service analysis of the company’s bank accounts showed that £4,592,200 was paid into the company between April 2020 and November 2022.

By the time of the company’s liquidation, the pair also owed Sway and Starting at least £2,961,745 through their director’s loan account.

The Secretary of State for Business and Trade accepted disqualification undertakings from Ant and Emilie Middleton, and their bans started on Monday 24 March and Wednesday 19 March respectively.

It prevents them from being involved in the promotion, formation or management of a company, without the permission of the court.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Doors ready to open at city’s newest housing complex

    Source: City of Stoke-on-Trent

    Published: Monday, 24th March 2025

A brand-new independent living complex offering support in Stoke-on-Trent is ready to welcome its first residents.

Chatterley Court in Chell Heath has been under construction since 2023 as part of Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s ongoing mission to ensure everybody has access to a decent home.

The over 55s facility boasts 113 one- and two-bed apartments, communal areas including, a reception lounge, resident’s lounge, dining room and gardens as well as a laundry room and scooter storage facilities.

The scheme will have staff on site Monday to Friday delivering support to meet individual residents needs and each apartment benefits from a range of support features including call alarm systems, easy access bathrooms with walk-in showers and the infrastructure for specialist equipment.

Chatterley Court also has a number of security features including CCTV, progressive security and a concierge service. On-site parking and electric charging facilities are also available.

Councillor Chris Robinson, cabinet member for housing and planning at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “Chatterley Court is one of a number of sheltered housing schemes which have opened in the city in the last few years, as part of the city council’s aim to raise housing standards.

“It is important that we continue to invest in – and upgrade – our council homes but it’s also essential that we provide more choice of accommodation for all so we can meet the needs of our residents now and in the future.

“When we talk about sheltered accommodation, a lot of people automatically picture a care home which hasn’t been decorated since the 1980s but this facility is really impressive. It is extremely modern and has everything a person could need – all in one place.”

Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for adult services at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “It is really important that we provide our residents with the right type of accommodation to enable them to live independently, while also ensuring support is available for them if they need it.

“As a council, we are working hard to create a healthier standard of living for all and I believe this facility will play a key part in helping people to thrive in a safe and modern environment.

“I’m really looking forward to welcoming Chatterley Court’s first residents in the next few months.”

Dan Roberts, Operations Director at Equans – the council’s construction contractor partner at Chatterley Court, said: “We’re delighted to have helped to create these beautiful new homes.

“As demand for sheltered accommodation continues to rise across the UK, it’s more important than ever that we work together to create places that residents are proud to call home, whilst also having the support and facilities on-hand to enable them to age well. I hope the new residents of Chatterley Court will be very happy there.”

Chatterley Court is the largest sheltered housing scheme delivered by Stoke-on-Trent City Council over the last five years.

It follows the launch of the £8.7 million, 57-bed QEII scheme in 2020 and Rialto Court, an £11 million over 55s scheme which boasts 65 one- and two-bed apartments, and welcomed its first residents in 2022.

The official opening of Chatterley Court is expected to take place later this year, as part of the city’s Centenary celebrations.

Anyone wishing to know more about the scheme should contact the council’s Sheltered Housing Team on 01782 235675 or via email at Sheltered.HousingTeam@stoke.gov.uk.

  • MIL-OSI: A USD$25 billion public-private Ghana climate futures and socio-economic initiative is agreed

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

The Ghana Green Guard USD$25 billion climate futures initiative agreement commits to deliver a series of diversified regenerative solutions to drive a healthier and more sustainable future for all Ghanaians. The agreement is a public-private collaborative partnership between the developer CarbonPura Africa, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) representing the government of Ghana and PSPH (Private Sector Participation in Health). Leveraging carbon financing, and carbon and biodiversity monetisation, the agreement will drive environmental restoration, clean water access, and community-based social programmes in Ghana.

ACCRA, Republic of Ghana, March 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — CarbonPura pioneers Ghana Green Guard, a transformative series of privately funded environmental protection, restoration, and climate-smart projects and initiatives bespoke to the landscape of Ghana. The Ghana Green Guard Agreement harnesses the power of leveraging a climate futures ecosystem combined with flows unlocked from carbon finance to address critical climate and sustainability challenges while advancing Ghana’s environmental restoration and socio-economic development goals.

Chief Executive Officer of the EPA of Ghana, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse says “the Ghana Green Guard Agreement is a significant milestone in Ghana’s environmental journey and marks the beginning of a new era in public-private stakeholder engagement to implement development practices and leverage international carbon markets to achieve sustainability, protect our water bodies and secure a healthier and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians.”

    • One of the most significant nature-based project methodology solutions globally it will generate over 305 million high-quality, investment-grade carbon credits across 12 million hectares of diverse landscapes with a projected cumulative revenue of $10.4 billion over 25 years.
    • Each project supports Ghana’s socio-economic and community enhancement programmes and initiatives to empower women, children, and the most vulnerable farmers and communities.
    • Aligns international and local partners, government support, NGO and University Collaboration, all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Ghana’s net-zero and global climate commitments.
    • Immediate intervention to enhance Ghana’s water security using the most effective and sustainable solutions and technologies that ensure long-term protection and safeguarding for the provision of clean water and the restoration of polluted water sources caused by illegal mining.

Ghana Green Guard combines the relationship driven socio-economic benefits of a public–private partnership to deliver projects that align seamlessly with President Mahama’s Policies for the Future of Ghana, Ghana’s net-zero and global climate commitments and all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The agreement will utilise restorative and ecosystem vision – not only in project execution but from new relationship driven economic models fuelled by investment grade biodiversity and carbon credit projects.

Dr. Fred Bedzrah, the Vice President of Operations for CarbonPura Africa, stated that “the Green Guard Ghana Agreement sets a new benchmark for environmental and socio-economic impact and is a bold step forward toward positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable carbon finance by integrating transparent governance, investment grade carbon credit generation, and inclusive community engagement. CarbonPura is proud to deliver a framework that enhances global climate action and ensures tangible benefits for healthier local communities and ecosystems. Ghana demonstrates how high-integrity restorative biodiversity and climate smart projects can drive sustainability and long-term investment confidence.”

The Ghana Green Guard Project leverages 12 million hectares of risk assessed eligible land across various regions of Ghana, strategically and with scientific rigour, chosen for their ecological, biodiversity and socio-economic potential. The expansive project ensures scalable investment-grade carbon credit generation goals and sustained environmental improvement by carefully integrating targeted activities such as reforestation, regenerative agriculture, illegal mining restoration and coastal environment restoration.

The Executive Director of PSPH Dr. Francis Adjei adds that “True sustainability is not just about restoring the environment—it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity for the most vulnerable. Through the Ghana Green Guard initiatives, we are ensuring that climate action translates into better healthcare, stronger communities, and a future where no one is left behind.”

Cath Thrupp, the Chief Executive Officer of Carbon Planet, says that “Ghana is leading the way in terms of showcasing a sustainable future for their country and the world. They are actively originating large-scale decarbonisation and landscape restoration programmes that will support their country to transition to net zero. In working with the global carbon markets to support this transition, Ghana is actively creating new jobs and opportunities for local communities. As a company, Carbon Planet is honoured to work with the Government and people of Ghana to create a sustainable future, with no one left behind”.

Each project methodology activity is designed to deliver long-term environmental and socio-economic benefits, creating a positive feedback loop where ecological improvements—such as increased biodiversity, improved soil fertility, and enhanced coastal resilience—foster sustainable community development, employment creation, strengthen food security, provide clean water, eliminate species extinction, and drive long-term economic resilience across regions dependent on agricultural and coastal livelihoods.

Mark Phillips, the Chief Executive Officer of Carbon Capital Corporation, says that “through strategic collaboration with Carbon Planet we lead the Ghana Green Guard project origination and ensure that all credits are investment ready, meet the highest standards of regulatory compliance and financial integrity and achieve long term environmental and social impact. This initiative exemplifies how carbon finance can drive real change, protecting ecosystems, empowering communities, and supporting Ghana’s climate commitments. Through Ghana Green Guard, we demonstrate that carbon markets can be a force for equitable and sustainable development.”

    Case study

ATCM: Over 1 million Single Justice Procedure cases moved from paper to digital

The Single Justice Procedure (SJP) was introduced by the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

It allows prosecutors – who decide whether a case should be taken through the procedure – to deal with cases involving adult defendants accused of lesser offences that cannot result in a prison sentence, including:

    • speeding

    • driving without insurance

    • TV license evasion

    • evading train fares

It enables defendants, prosecutors and courts to reach a resolution to minor offences without having to attend court (unless they choose to do so).

A single magistrate, advised by a professional lawyer, deals with cases under SJP away from a courtroom. There’s no prosecutor or defendant present and they can deal with the case swiftly without tying up valuable court time.

Before 2017, SJP cases relied on paper-based processes and outdated technology meaning:

    • court staff and magistrates manually handling lots of paper

    • hours spent manually entering data which also increased the risk of human error

    • inefficient sharing of information over email causing delays

    • cost to the taxpayer associated with printing and transporting files from building to building

The system needed modernisation to handle summary, non-imprisonable offences more efficiently.

    Benefits

By introducing Automated Track Case Management (ATCM), a digital service created to help process SJP cases on the Common Platform criminal case management system, we’ve transformed the process. This modernised, streamlined service now provides courts, prosecutors, and the public with a more efficient service.

Over 1.1 million SJP cases have been completed digitally between April 2017 and 31 December 2024, each benefiting through:

    • faster justice giving prosecutors more capacity and enabling for defendants to move on more quickly with their lives

    • quicker information sharing between court, prosecutor and defendant

    • the ability to interact with cases more accessibly at any time and keep informed of progress

    • greater flexibility to magistrates and court staff, enabling a more efficient running of the work coming into court

    • better consistency of service being provided to all stakeholders, with Courts and Tribunals Service Centres dealing with day-to-day enquiries, rather than individual courts

    • more effective use of physical court capacity providing better value for money to the taxpayer

    • case lists published online and additional information made available to journalists, to support open justice

    • significant reduction in the financial cost of printing and transporting paper files

    Our digital transformation

ATCM represents a transformation of the SJP system. The digital platform now manages cases from initial receipt through to the magistrate’s decision, while providing transparent access to case outcomes, referrals, and costs awarded to all stakeholders in the process, as well as journalists.

By creating a digital platform under the Reform Programme we’ve enabled:

    • end-to-end digital case management from beginning of the process to decision, allowing all stakeholders to access the information they need in real time

    • direct digital case uploading by prosecutors including DVLA, TV Licensing, TfL and local police forces

    • online plea submissions, where defendants can upload supporting information

    • real-time tracking of the progress made by a case

    • automated notification system for case decisions to all stakeholders involved in the process, and also to journalists

    • journalists can obtain detailed information (prosecution facts and defence mitigation) digitally

    • digital access for magistrates to enter decisions directly into the system

    • integrated support from Courts and Tribunals Service Centre (CTSC)

This benefits a range of people involved in the process:

    • Prosecutors including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, TV Licensing, and police forces can now upload cases directly to the system

    • Defendants can submit pleas and access supporting information online

    • Magistrates and legal advisers can access case details, record decisions, generate orders and notices, and update driver records all through one unified platform

    • Journalists receive more information and do not have to travel to courts in person in order to report on cases

    Better information sharing

The system’s role-based access ensures users only see information relevant to their needs, eliminating the need for paper documentation and reducing manual data entry.

Transparency is maintained through online publication of court lists, while journalists can access both upcoming hearing lists and court records, enabling scrutiny and reporting of outcomes to the public.

Take up of the digital service has been strong, with the volume of digital cases between April 2019 and March 2023 more than doubling.

Since April 2022, 80% of people going through the single justice service are satisfied with the service they received.

    Working together

We have consulted and collaborated with a number of justice partners to design, test and implement Automated Track Case Management, the digital system developed to administer Single Justice Procedure cases online:

    • local police forces on rollout and delivery – police prosecutors are now able to upload direct to the system and self-serve

    • all criminal justice system partners

    • non police prosecutors (NPPs) – these are now digital by default and onboarding for NPPs will accelerate in 2025/2026

    • Courts and Tribunals Service Centres to offer best support and advice with ongoing cases to all stakeholders

    • magistrates, legal advisers and judiciary as a vital partner to deliver a more streamlined system

    Getting support

The Courts and Tribunals Service Centres (CTSC) provide comprehensive assistance to all users. Key improvements include:

    • dedicated support for defendants, prosecutors, and journalists

    • consistent service levels across all interactions

    • reduced wait times from over an hour to 15 minutes for phone queries

    • new online self-endorsement system for driving licence details

    Feedback and insights

Andrew Morris, Acting Head of Legal Operations for Wales, reflected:

“It increases flexibility, is time efficient, more eco-friendly, and saves courtroom space for dealing with more serious offences.”

West Yorkshire Police Unit Operations Manager, Debbie Taylor, emphasised the impact:

“Before ATCM and Common Platform, we did 600 SJP cases a week. In October 2024, it’s now gone up to 650 cases a week – and we are on track to increase to a thousand by June or July 2025.”

    Future plans

We plan to continue to evolve the system including:

    • completing the digital service rollout to all police forces nationwide engaging new non–police prosecutors including the Environment Agency and transport companies

    • holding a comprehensive evaluation of the system’s sustainability and effectiveness

    • improving media access and transparency measures – publishing more data than ever before, as well as inviting journalists to observe SJP sessions

    • developing enhanced self-service options for users

    • implementing continuous technological improvements

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Panasonic’s Video Mixer Plug-in Version 2 Enhances Real-time Video Production with AI-powered Face Filter and Automatic Face Picture-in-picture

    Source: Panasonic

Headline: Panasonic’s Video Mixer Plug-in Version 2 Enhances Real-time Video Production with AI-powered Face Filter and Automatic Face Picture-in-picture

Osaka, Japan, March 24th, 2025 – Panasonic Entertainment & Communication Co., Ltd. announced today that Version 2 of its AW-SF400 Video Mixer Plug-in, a paid plug-in for the company’s software-based Media Production Suite platform, will be released in the second quarter of CY2025. The new update will introduce advanced AI-driven features to achieve even greater efficiency for simplifying high-quality video production.
Note: For the latest information on plug-in availability, please refer to the website shown below.
Video Mixer Plug-in Version 2 is planned to be showcased at the National Association of Broadcasters’ 2025 NAB Show (Booth #N1311), in Las Vegas, USA from April 6–9.The current version, AW-SF400, offers powerful tools, such as AI Keying, which extracts subjects from backgrounds without requiring a green screen, and Smart Switching, which enables quick application of various compositing patterns with a single click. Version 2 enhances these capabilities even further with AI-driven improvements.
One of the key additions is the AI Effect Filter, which uses AI-based face detection and recognition for real-time mosaic processing. When installed on a PC, the plug-in automatically detects faces during shooting and applies preset filter effects, such as mosaics, in real time.
In addition, Version 2 introduces AI Face Crop, an automatic face PinP (picture-in-picture) processing feature designed to streamline live video production. Using AI face detection technology, the system can identify and track specific individuals and automatically insert their faces as PinP overlays. By allowing a single camera to display multiple face PinP overlays simultaneously, the new feature eliminates the need for multiple cameras. Even non-professionals can efficiently manage multi-person video production for streaming corporate events, lectures, etc., as well as broadcasting.
Version 2 also adds audio input/output support and external API integration to optimize live video production workflows and reduce the burden of on-site operations.
With growing privacy concerns in online streaming, broadcasting and event-video production, there is an increasing need to ensure that unrelated people do not appear on camera. However, this can be difficult to achieve during shooting, and applying mosaic effects manually in post-production is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Version 2 addresses these concerns with AI-driven functionality, allowing video creators to work more efficiently. Panasonic remains committed to enhancing its Media Production Suite to meet the evolving needs of video professionals.

    Key Features:

    1. AI Effect Filter (Face Filtering Processing)

Leveraging AI technology, this feature detects faces in video feeds and applies real-time filtering effects, such as mosaics or blurring.
Face filtering for up to 25 people at a time.
Filtering only specific faces while leaving others unaltered.
Selected faces can be excluded from filtering.
Three filter effects: Blur, Mosaic, and Image Overlay.
Blur and Mosaic effects can be adjusted for intensity.
Image overlay allows assigning different images to individual faces (up to 8 people).
    AI Effect Filter Examples:

    2. AI Face Crop (AI-powered Auto Face PinP)

This feature uses AI to detect and track faces in real time and automatically insert them as PinP overlays.
Cropping and PinP insertion for up to 8 people.
Tracking continues if subject moves and resumes if subject reappears after exiting frame.
Customizable layout positioning for cropped images.
Frames can be added around cropped images (adjustable width, single-color only).
Provides alpha-channel output for seamless keying and external switcher integration.
Specific registered faces can be assigned to each PinP overlay.
    AI Face Crop Example:

    3. Enhanced Audio I/O and External API Integration

    Audio Input/Output Capabilities
Embedded audio input/output via SDI, NDI® and SRT.
Customizable audio channel assignment for each output, with input audio details viewable in Settings menu.
Audio output monitoring via PC’s Line Out.
Seamless audio source switching even while video output is active.
Audio Follow Video for automatic audio adjustment when switching PGM (IN and Scene only).
Configuration options for audio sources when PGM is selected in Scene settings.
Output volume adjustment directly from multi-view screen.
    External API Integration
    HTTP/TCP-based external control.
Four key control commands: PGM Switching, DSK ON/OFF, PGM/KEY Capture and AI Keying Background Image Capture

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung Unveils New Refrigerator Lineup Equipped With Screens and Enhanced AI Vision Inside Feature

    Source: Samsung

Samsung Electronics today announced the global rollout of its latest lineup of smart refrigerators, reinforcing the “Screens Everywhere” vision introduced at CES 2025. This expansion includes the introduction of the 9-inch AI Home screen1 on the 4-Door, 4-Door French Door and Side-by-Side refrigerators, as well as an enhanced Family Hub screen on select French Door and Side-by-Side models. An enhanced AI Vision Inside2 feature is integrated on select 4-Door and 4-Door French Door models, refining food identification and streamlining meal planning to ensure a more intuitive kitchen experience for users.

“By offering a wide array of refrigerator options across type and also screen sizes, we are expanding choices to meet diverse household requirements,” says Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Consumers can enjoy greater flexibility in choosing fridge designs while benefiting from the AI-powered smart home experience Samsung provides.”

A Smarter Way To Manage Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment
Samsung’s new refrigerators incorporate the intuitive 9” AI Home screen and 32” or 21.5” Family Hub screens, which are designed to enhance four key areas of daily life: Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment. The first category, food, is especially powered by the upgraded AI Vision Inside, which adds four more food items to the list of recognizable types for a total of 37. Furthermore, adding on to fresh food items, AI Vision Inside can now also recognize processed food items. Refrigerators with the enhanced AI Vision Inside will recognize and recommend users to save processed food items that have been placed inside multiple times, allowing up to 50 items to be saved with designated names.3 Based on the improved food list, the screen will provide tailored recipe recommendations and meal planning,4 making home cooking more seamless and personalized.

Beyond food, the screens also enhance smart home connectivity. The latest advancements provide deeper integration into the smart home ecosystem, making the refrigerator a central hub capable of controlling connected appliances throughout the entire home. With the integration of Map View, users can monitor and control Samsung appliances and even third-party smart home devices5 like lights and smart plugs. There’s also SmartThings Energy,6 which helps users track and optimize their energy consumption, facilitating greater efficiency in everyday life. The intuitive display provides users with access to a great deal of information about their home, with users also being able to issue voice commands through Bixby.7

The new Daily Board feature keeps everyone informed and connected. Placed at the heart of the home, the refrigerator screen delivers real-time updates throughout the day — whether it’s the morning weather and schedule before heading to work, or daily energy consumption reports in the evening. Users can also easily access their schedules through voice commands and receive tailored responses. By recognizing each family member’s voice and replying accordingly, Bixby will serve as both a helpful assistant for the entire household and for each person individually.8 Additional family-focused features include a shared gallery for storing precious memories and a calendar to help with daily planning.

Samsung’s latest refrigerators also redefine entertainment in the kitchen, allowing users to stay engaged while cooking or spending time with family. With Spotify integration, users can listen to their favorite music or podcasts directly from their fridge.9 SmartView Mirroring enables seamless screen sharing from smartphones or Samsung TVs, and the dedicated gallery feature lets families display their favorite photos, adding a personal touch to the kitchen.

    The Next Generation of Refrigeration

The 4-Door Refrigerator is designed to meet the needs of modern households with its innovative features.10 The 9” AI Home applied on select models allows the refrigerator to integrate seamlessly with the smart home ecosystem. Models that incorporate Hybrid Cooling technology11 keep produce fresh for even longer, while also allowing extra space12 by utilizing a peltier module that is compact in size for cooling. By utilizing the conventional compressor and the Peltier module together, AI Hybrid Cooling is capable of providing additional cooling whenever necessary, such as when the internal temperature increases or when AI predicts a potential rise.13 When users put in a large amount of groceries after shopping or open the door multiple times in the summer, the Peltier module will assist the compressor to maintain a consistent internal temperature.

The 4-Door Refrigerator also comes in Kitchen Fit design, allowing agile installation that requires only a tiny gap of just 4mm from the sides and 20mm from the top. Also, the refrigerator’s doors have been enhanced with SpaceMax insulation technology that uses less amount of high-efficiency insulation, increasing the space in the doors by 56% compared to previous models equaling 10L in capacity.14 Users can also enjoy convenience with the wide opening door that opens more than 90 degrees, and the food showcase to store frequently used items.

The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator, launching in North America, is available in various configurations, including a 32” Family Hub and a 9” AI Home. This flexibility allows users to choose the best fit for their kitchen. The Auto Open Door15 feature ensures hassle-free accessibility with just a gentle tap, making it accessible to everyone in all kinds of situations to effortlessly access the inside of the fridge. It also has a Beverage Center that includes a water dispenser and a 1.4L Auto-Fill Water Pitcher that is dishwasher safe16 and BPA free.17 Apart from ensuring that fresh, filtered water is always available, the pitcher also allows users to infuse their water with fruits and herbs.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Pro-Palestinian protesters challenge NZ’s Winston Peters at state of the nation speech

Report by Dr David Robie – Café Pacific.

Like a relentless ocean, wave after wave of pro-Palestinian pro-human rights protesters disrupted New Zealand deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters’ state of the nation speech at the Christchurch Town Hall yesterday.

A clarion call to Trumpism and Australia’s One Nation Party, the speech was accompanied by the background music of about 250 protesters outside the Town Hall, chanting: “Complicity in genocide is a crime.”

Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) co-chair John Minto described Peters’ attitude to Palestinians as “sickening”.

Inside the James Hay Theatre, protester after protester stood and spoke loudly and clearly against the deputy Prime Minister’s failure to support those still dying in Gaza, and his failure to denounce the ongoing genocide.

Ben Vorderegger was the first of nine protesters who appealed on behalf of people who have lost their voices in the dust of blood and bones, bombs and sniper guns.

Before he and others were hauled out, they spoke for the tens of thousands of Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza — women, men, doctors, aid workers, journalists, and children.

Gazan health authorities have reported that the official death toll is now more than 50,000 — but that is the confirmed deaths with thousands more buried under the rubble.

    Real death toll
The real death toll from the genocide in Gaza has been estimated by a reputed medical journal, The Lancet, at more than 63,000. A third of those are children. Each day more children are killed.

One by one the protesters who challenged Peters were manhandled by security guards to a frenzied crowd screaming “out, out”.

The deputy Prime Minister’s response was to deride and mock the conscientious objectors. He did not stop there. He lambasted the media.

At this point, several members of his audience turned on me as a journalist and demanded my removal.

This means that not only is the right to free speech at stake, the right or freedom to report is also being eroded. (I was later trespassed by security guards and police from the Town Hall although no reason was supplied for the ban).

Inside the Christchurch Town Hall the call by Peters, who is also Foreign Minister, to “Make New Zealand Great Again” continued in the vein of a speech written by a MAGA leader.

He whitewashed human rights, failed to address climate change, and demonstrated loathing for a media that has rarely challenged him.

Ben Vorderegger in keffiyeh was the first of nine protesters who appealed on behalf of Palestinans before
being thrown out of the Christchurch Town Hall meeting. Image: Saige England/APR

    Condemned movement
Slamming the PSNA as “Marxist fascists” for calling out genocide, he condemned the movement for failing to talk with those who have a record of kowtowing to violent colonisation.

This tactic is Colonial Invasion 101. It sees the invader rewarding and only dealing with those who sell out. This strategy demands that the colonised people should bow to the oppressor — an oppressor who threatens them with losing everything if they do not accept the scraps.

Peters showed no support for the Treaty of Waitangi but rather, endorsed the government’s challenge to the founding document of the nation – Te Tiriti o Waitangi. In his dismissal of the founding and legally binding partnership, he repeated the “One Nation” catch-cry. Ad nauseum.

Besides slamming Palestinians, the Scots (he managed to squeeze in a racist joke against Scottish people), and the woke, Peters’ speech promoted continued mining, showing some amnesia over the Pike River disaster. He did not reference the environment or climate change.

After the speech, outside the Town Hall police donned black gloves — a sign they were prepared to use pepper-spray.

PSNA co-chair John Minto described Peters’ failure to stand against the ongoing genocide of Palestinians as “bloody disgraceful”.

The police arrested one protester, claiming he put his hand on a car transporting NZ First officials. A witness said this was not the case.

    Protester released
The protester was later released without any charges being laid.

A defiant New Zealand First MP Shane Jones marched out of the Town Hall after the event. He raised his arms defensively at protesters crying, “what if it was your grandchildren being slaughtered?”

I was trespassed from the Christchurch Town Hall for re-entering the Town Hall for Winston Peters’ media conference. No reason was supplied by police or the Town Hall security personnel for that trespass order..

It is well known that Peters loathes the media — he said so enough times during his state of the nation speech.

He referenced former US President Bill Clinton during his speech, an interesting reference given that Clinton did not receive the protection from the media that Peters has received.

From the over zealous security personnel who manhandled and dragged out hecklers, to the banning of a journalist, to the arrest of someone for “touching a car” when witnesses report otherwise, the state of the nation speech held some uncomfortable echoes — the actions of a fascist dictatorship.

    Populist threats
The atmosphere was reminiscent of a Jorg Haider press conference I attended many years ago in Vienna. That “rechtspopulist” Austrian politician had threatened journalists with defamation suits if they called him out on his support for Nazis.

Yet he was on record for doing so.

I was reminded of this yesterday when the audience called ‘out out’ at hecklers, and demanded the removal of this journalist. These New Zealand First supporters demand adoration for their leader or a media black-out.

Perhaps they cannot be blamed given that the state of the nation speech could well have been written by US President Donald Trump or one of his minions.

The protesters were courageous and conscientious in contrast to Peters, said PSNA’s John Minto.

He likened Peters to Neville Chamberlain — Britain’s Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940. His name is synonymous with the policy of “appeasement” because he conceded territorial concessions to Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, fruitlessly hoping to avoid war.

“He has refused to condemn any of Israel’s war crimes against Palestinians, including the total humanitarian aid blockade of Gaza.”

    Refusal ‘unprecedented’
“It’s unprecedented in New Zealand history that a government would refuse to condemn Israel breaking its ceasefire agreement and resuming industrial-scale slaughter of civilians,” Minto said.

“That is what Israel is doing today in Gaza, with full backing from the White House.

“Chamberlain went to meet Hitler in Munich in 1938 to whitewash Nazi Germany’s takeovers of its neighbours’ lands.

“Peters has been in Washington to agree to US approval of the occupation of southern Syria, more attacks on Lebanon, resumption of the land grab genocide in Gaza and get a heads-up on US plans to ‘give’ the Occupied West Bank to Israel later this year.

“If Peters disagrees with any of this, he’s had plenty of chances to say so.

“New Zealanders are calling for sanctions on Israel but Mr Peters and the National-led government are looking the other way.”

New Zealand First MP Shane Jones marched out of the Town Hall after the event, dismissing protesters crying, “what if it was your grandchildren being slaughtered?” Image: Saige England/APR

    Only staged questions
The conscientious objectors who rise against the oppression of human rights are people Winston Peters regards as his enemies. He will only answer questions in a press conference staged for him.

He warms to journalists who warm to him.

The state of the nation speech in the Town Hall was familiar.

Seeking to erase conscientiousness will not make New Zealand great, it will render this country very small, almost miniscule, like the people who are being destroyed for daring to demand their right to their own land.

Six day “International Workshop on Land Governance” to commence in Gurugram, Haryana to tackle Global Land Challenges

India’s SVAMITVA Scheme to Take Center Stage at the International Workshop, to be held during 24th – 29th March 2025

Delegates from 22 Countries to participate; Workshop to showcase High-Resolution Mapping and CORS Technology for Land Administration

Posted On: 22 MAR 2025 3:36PM by PIB Delhi

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs under their Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program and the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA), is organizing an “International Workshop on Land Governance” from 24th March to 29th March, 2025 at HIPA Complex in Gurugram, Haryana. The workshop will bring together delegates from 22 countries across Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia to explore innovative approaches for addressing land governance challenges globally. This six-day international workshop will showcase India’s pioneering SVAMITVA Scheme, which has successfully mapped rural inhabited areas using drone technology to provide legal ownership documents to property owners. More than 40 senior officials from 22 participating countries, including Turkmenistan, Colombia, Zimbabwe, Fiji, Mali, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Venezuela, Mongolia, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Equatorial Guinea, Kiribati, São Tomé and Príncipe, Liberia, Ghana, Armenia, Honduras, Eswatini, Cambodia, Togo, and Papua New Guinea will exchange best practices on land governance during the workshop.

The International Workshop will entail discussions on advancements in land governance and sustainable development and feature comprehensive sessions on drone-based land survey techniques, high-resolution mapping, and geospatial technologies that can transform land administration. Technical sessions will include hands-on demonstration of drone survey methods, data processing techniques, ground verification processes and GIS integration. Survey of India experts will conduct field demonstrations of flight planning and drone surveying in a nearby village, offering participants practical exposure to this technology. The International Workshop on Land Governance will also feature field visits and exhibitions to provide participants, hands-on exposure to modern land governance technologies. To showcase cutting-edge technologies, a Drone Vendors’ Exhibition will be organized on March 24 – 25, 2025, wherein 10 drone vendors will set up stalls, displaying innovations in drone-based land mapping and survey techniques. The exhibition will showcase survey-grade drones for high-precision mapping, advanced drone survey processes and technology, and GIS tools and applications for data-driven land management. State Governments will present digital innovations in end-to-end process automation, while demonstrations of Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) [CORS network has been established by Survey of India as public infrastructure, which provides 5cm accuracy positioning services for developmental works. This technology can be leveraged for sustainable development and disaster management] and Rovers will highlight real-time, high-accuracy land surveying techniques.

Industry partners including Survey of India, State Land Revenue Departments, National Informatics Centre, Geo-Spatial World, Hexagon, Trimble, Aereo, Marvell Geospatial, Idea Forge Tech, and AWS will participate as knowledge partners, exhibiting cutting-edge technologies and solutions for land governance. In addition, a series of classroom demonstrations will take place, including drone use cases, ortho-rectified imaging, feature-extracted maps, and ground verification technologies. These demonstrations will provide participants with insights into high-resolution mapping, data validation, and property card finalization, contributing to a deeper understanding of modern land governance practices.

This workshop recognizes the universal challenge of land governance, noting that according to a 2017 World Bank report, only 30% of the global population holds legally registered land titles. By contrast, India’s SVAMITVA Scheme has pioneered a comprehensive approach to mapping inhabited rural areas with 5cm accuracy at a resolution of 1:500, positioning India as a potential model for other nations. It will help in achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to land rights, with participants learning from India’s SVAMITVA model to empower their own citizens with clear land ownership documentation thus creating more reliable land administration systems.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Housing Bill: Women must be better protected to flee domestic abuse

    Source: Scottish Greens

The Bill must protect as many women as possible.

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman has lodged proposals to expand the definition of domestic abuse to protect more women and children who are facing homelessness. The proposal will be considered as an amendment to the upcoming Housing (Scotland) Bill.

Ms Chapman believes that the Scottish Government’s current definition within the context of this bill is not broad enough to offer the necessary protections, only covering violent, threatening and intimidating conduct.

The expanded definition that Ms Chapman is calling for would see controlling, coercive, and degrading behaviour included within the definition – a change that charity organisation Scottish Women’s Aid has long called for.

    Ms Chapman said:

“Women might feel unable to leave a violent and abusive relationship for fear of ending up homeless, and that sense of feeling trapped only increases when there are children involved in the process.

“This bill must work to enhance the support we offer women and children, so that they are better protected and able to flee from abuse, without fear of being left homeless or placed in unsuitable and unsafe accommodation due to their experience of abuse not matching the government’s definition.

“By expanding the definition of domestic abuse, we can help to resolve that fear and create a more hopeful future for women and their families who are rebuilding their lives.”

Ms Chapman has also lodged an amendment that would force the Scottish Government to implement the findings of their December 2020 report on improving housing outcomes for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

The actions called for in the report include: improving how homelessness due to domestic abuse appears in statistics, developing a Housing First pathway for women experiencing domestic abuse, and developing a timetable to implement the Ending Homelessness Together action plan that will ensure the homelessness system meets the needs of diverse groups of women.

    Ms Chapman said:

“There are groups who have been waiting years for the findings of this report to be put into action. My proposal will bring them forward and help ensure that women and children experiencing domestic abuse are provided with the right services, with the right support and regular reviews to ensure that progress is being made.”

  • MIL-OSI Africa: African safaris and colonial nightmares: a visit to artist Roger Ballen’s latest show

Born in the US, Roger Ballen, the internationally renowned photographer, has lived in South Africa since the 1970s.

He gained a cult following for his grotesque, surreal images of white poverty, captured on the rural fringes during apartheid. His work exposed not only the exploitation and marginalisation of his subjects but also the reality of apartheid’s failure to uplift even its privileged white minority.

Over time, Ballen’s practice has expanded beyond photography into a hybrid realm of exhibition, installation and performance. His new Johannesburg space, the Inside Out Centre for the Arts, serves as a theatre for this experimentation.

The name itself, Inside Out, is typically “Ballenesque”, evoking the psychological effect he seeks to instil in viewers: a blurring of perception and reality. His exhibition, End of the Game, is an arresting debut for the centre.

Ballen is committed to challenging perspectives on African narratives. Designed as a platform for thought-provoking exhibitions and educational programmes, Inside Out supports a range of artistic practices, including photography, painting, sculpture, installation, drawing and film.

On a recent visit to the centre, Ballen walks me through the exhibition. As a scholar of literature and visual cultures, I am fascinated with this epic engagement with colonial archives and the history of big game hunting in Africa since the 1700s.

Even though the show’s been up for over a year, there’s no rush to close it, Ballen tells me. It’s become the backdrop of many eclectic events at the centre – live tattooing, poetry performances, curatorial talks, music workshops, film screenings, panel discussions. The centre is also proving popular for school group visits.

End of the Game is a visual and psychological exploration of the African safari – an experience long entwined with adventure, exploration, and the exploitative legacies of colonialism. It delves into humanity’s deep-seated drive to control and assert dominance over nature and wildlife.

    A call to action

Entering End of the Game, visitors are greeted by Tarzan posters and a room filled with photos, books and documentary material on colonial hunting. But down the stairs, the experience shifts dramatically.

Here, Ballen’s images merge with eerie, mechanised sculptures of taxidermied (stuffed) creatures and unsettling painted tableaus. It feels like a horror-infused natural history museum.

Ballen blurs the line between documentary and constructed imagery, creating existential psychological dramas within haunting interiors.

Through his depictions of people and animals on the fringes of existence, he invites us to confront both our own alienation from the natural world and also the devastating consequences of our destructive behaviour.

Over the years, the scenes in Ballen’s photography have become increasingly elaborate and theatrical. His props, masks, drawings and sculptures have come to feature more prominently than people. The results often look more like mixed media collages than photographs.

Some of these elements are present in End of the Game. It assembles historical artefacts, paintings, colonial and contemporary photographs, as well as carefully staged objects. The result is a critical interrogation of the ecological crisis to which we have contributed. In the context of climate change, the show stands as both a stark indictment and an urgent call to action.

    Beyond photography

The impulse to compose images beyond the medium of the photograph is what leads Ballen to collect found objects. He explains the process this way:

I am always trying to find things that don’t necessarily belong together and in making them belong together in a new way … It takes the spectator’s mind on a journey in another direction, which is important in art.

Nothing is static. Everything is in constant motion. The exhibition is immersive. The viewer and the objects are circling each other. Walking through it feels like entering a jungle, the taxidermied animals look poised for confrontation.

For Ballen, this encounter is both physical and psychological – are animals enemies or figures of beauty? Perhaps coexistence is the question at the work’s core. As he explains it:

A central challenge in my career has been to locate the animal in the human being and the human being in the animal.

As the Tarzan posters make clear from the beginning, the idea of Africa has been hyped through Hollywood clichés. The image of it as a wild continent to be tamed and conquered, an unspoiled paradise, or a playground, has persisted. The romance of the African bush has filled the imagination of many foreign writers.

Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina, in his essay How to Write About Africa, satirised this:

Always use the word ‘Africa’ or ‘Darkness’ or ‘Safari’ in your title.

Here, safari embodies the enduring thrill of conquest.

In the screen room, a collaged film is shown, made up of old hunting expedition clips found on YouTube. It is travel propaganda of famous hunting expeditions, led by colonialists and influential western figures.

Ballen, a US-trained geologist, was drawn to South Africa to study and work in the mineral extraction field. His deep engagement with the earth’s structure, materials and processes conceptually frames this exhibition, blending the scientific with the surreal.

The show sparks critical conversations on wildlife conservation, responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.

    Inside Out

Inside Out was originally intended to be a photography centre, but during construction Ballen started imagining broader possibilities. It evolved into a multi-purpose venue that is a gallery, a theatre and an exhibition space, all in one.

However, the photography centre remains part of the plan. Ballen has bought the property next door, where the photography centre will now be established. Set to open in the last quarter of 2025, the centre will host photography exhibitions, talks and a bookstore, making it one of Africa’s few dedicated photography centres.
