    • Discover Games Shaped by Women Creators: Highlighting iconic games and franchises created by women developers, showcasing how their unique perspectives have shaped the gaming world we know today.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s essential to recognize the critical role women play and have played in shaping the gaming industry. Women have been at the forefront of pushing the industry forward since its earliest days. Their contributions have helped shape the way we play, tell stories, and connect with the digital world—contributions that deserve our recognition and celebration.

In celebration of this, we’re excited to feature the first two parts of an exclusive interview with Roberta Williams, one of the most influential women in gaming – we’ll be releasing more excerpts throughout the month.

Roberta co-founded Sierra On-Line and created the iconic King’s Quest series, a groundbreaking achievement in storytelling and game design. From her pioneering work to the impact of other women like Kim Swift, who designed Portal, women have continually redefined the possibilities of gaming. These women, and many others, have not only created beloved games but have also paved the way for future generations of women to see themselves in the industry—whether as developers, writers, designers, or producers.

Women have been influential figures across all areas of the gaming world—from design and development to storytelling and production. As we continue to break down barriers and champion diverse perspectives, we’re proud to amplify the voices of those who have shaped the industry’s past and are shaping its future.

In our exclusive interview with Roberta, she reflects on her pioneering journey in the gaming industry and shares her insights into her love of mysteries, the creation of Laura Bow; one of the first heroines in gaming, advise for young women looking to get into gaming, and what inspired her to return with a new adventure, Colossal Cave. Her groundbreaking work in interactive storytelling has inspired generations of creators, and her thoughts on the past, present, and future of women in gaming offer invaluable perspectives on the road ahead.

Marcella Churchill – Sr. Director of Brand at SEGA of America

Marcella Churchill is a visionary leader in brand marketing with a track record of spearheading global brand campaigns at LucasArts, EA, Zynga, Discord, and now Sega of America. At Sega, she is redefining transmedia storytelling, transforming iconic franchises into multimedia powerhouses. She has played a key role in elevating Sonic the Hedgehog to new heights, leading brand marketing endeavors supporting blockbuster films, hit TV series, major brand partnerships, and best-selling games. Beyond Sonic, Marcella is driving the resurgence of beloved franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Persona, and Like a Dragon, expanding their reach and legacy. Passionate about innovation, she is dedicated to growing Sega’s global brand, crafting unforgettable fan experiences, and pushing the boundaries of brand marketing and gaming entertainment.

Q: You’ve seen incredible growth in the Sonic brand, from successful games to record-breaking movies. What do you think has been the key to Sonic’s ability to cross storytelling mediums and what’s next on the horizon for you and your team?

A: Sonic’s evolution from a beloved video game character to a full-fledged entertainment icon is a testament to the passion and dedication of our team. We’ve focused on staying true to the heart of Sonic—his energy, attitude, and sense of adventure—while expanding his storytelling across games, film, TV, comics, and beyond. By embracing a transmedia approach, we’ve introduced Sonic to new audiences while deepening the experience for longtime fans. The success of the films, alongside hit games like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations, has reinforced the strength of the franchise, and last year’s brand marketing campaign featuring the Year of Shadow was a significant moment, culminating in the movie release of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’.

Looking ahead, we have a lot in store for Sonic fans. While we can’t reveal everything yet, our team is committed to delivering exciting new, unique experiences and pushing the brand further. Whether through innovative game projects, fresh storytelling opportunities, or unexpected collaborations, we’re focused on keeping Sonic’s momentum strong and continuing to surprise and delight fans worldwide.

Q: As a woman in a leadership role in gaming, how have you seen Marketing in the gaming industry evolve over the years and where do you see it going?

A: Marketing in the gaming industry has evolved significantly, shifting from traditional print and TV ads to digital-first, community-driven strategies. Early on, marketing was heavily reliant on big-budget campaigns and retail partnerships. Still, engagement has become more personalized, pervasive, and interactive with the rise of social media, influencers, live service models, and more opportunities to collaborate with brands through collaborations and lifestyle partnerships. Players now expect direct communication, behind-the-scenes access, and content tailored to their interests. Looking ahead, I see marketing continuing to blend data-driven insights with creative storytelling, lifestyle partnerships, leveraging user-generated content, and emerging platforms to foster deeper player engagement and brand loyalty.

Q: As a leader in the gaming industry, what advice would you give to young women aspiring to build a career in marketing and gaming and how can they best prepare for the future you see ahead?

A: My advice to young women aspiring to build a career in marketing and gaming is to stay curious, build a strong network, and embrace creativity and data-driven decision-making. The industry thrives on innovation, so developing a deep understanding of player communities, emerging technologies, and digital marketing trends will be key. Seek mentors, advocate for yourself, and don’t be afraid to take up space in rooms where you may be the only woman. As the industry evolves, staying adaptable and continuously learning will be essential for long-term success.

Wonder Stormbreaker – Head of Studio Marketing at Undead Labs

As the Head of Studio Marketing at Undead Labs, Wonder Stormbreaker plays a crucial role in ensuring that the studio’s projects, particularly the State of Decay franchise, connect with audiences on a deep level. With a strong passion for storytelling and community engagement, Wonder’s work is centered around building immersive experiences for fans and amplifying Undead Labs’ voice in the gaming world. Whether through innovative marketing campaigns or leading the charge in social media outreach, Wonder is always thinking about how to bring players into the fold and create lasting relationships with the community.

Q: As Head of Studio Marketing, how do you approach creating authentic connections with fans and building a community around Undead Labs’ games?

A: One of my core values is integrity: be who you say you are and do what you say you’re going to do. That’s what players expect from us. We build strong relationships by delivering on what we’ve promised. To do that, we place a high value on players’ experiences and expectations. Trust is at the heart of strong relationships between studios and players.

Q: State of Decay has a passionate fanbase. What do you think has been the key to building that loyalty, and how do you keep the game’s community engaged over time?

A: It’s important to our studio culture that we never lose sight of the worth and power of an individual.

State of Decay’s popularity began as a grassroots movement. Personal touch is a priority for how we build community. I ask thorny questions: How do we make a larger, global audience feel connected and cared for? How do we automate what we do here to serve even more players, without depersonalization? We know we won’t always get the answers right on the first try, and frankly, I hate that. I would love to knock it out of the park the first time, every time. The important thing is that our players have evidence that we’re always improving their experience.

Q: Marketing in the gaming industry can be very dynamic and fast-paced. How do you stay ahead of trends, and what excites you most about the future of game marketing?

A: It’s important to think of games as one piece of the “entertainment-verse.” I have a theater and film background and often look to the film industry for clues about where we are headed, but really, it’s about how games fit into people’s lives when everything is vying for attention.

It’s easy to be swept into our own silos, even an Xbox silo. Right now, I’m working with the Turn 10 team on a few projects which is incredible for inspiration and new perspectives. I read industry newsletters like A16z’s speedrun and Naavik, as well as current event roundups like Mo News and Semafor. This may be surprising, but I avoid almost all social media. The firehose of micro-entertainment on social platforms can overwhelm the big picture, and the big picture is most interesting to me. That’s where vision flourishes.

Empowering Women Streamers with South of Midnight

In South of Midnight, we step into the shoes of Hazel, a strong, rough-edged protagonist navigating a world inspired by the American Deep South. Tasked with fixing what’s broken, Hazel must adapt to a hostile environment that’s barely recognizable. This month, Team Xbox continues its commitment to empowering women protagonists and celebrating women in the gaming industry in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland). As part of this, Xbox is partnering with the creator agency Instinct3 on a campaign to support and elevate emerging women streamers for South of Midnight. This initiative offers smaller, up-and-coming streamers the chance to apply and receive early access codes for the game. Focused on those who may not yet have the reach of more established streamers, the campaign aims to shine a spotlight on women creators by sponsoring their streams and giving them a platform to grow.

In the spirit of empowering women, streamers will support each other through Twitch’s raid mechanics, directing viewers from one stream to the next. These streams and raids will kick off with South of Midnight Early Access on April 3. Details will be shared via Xbox Wire DACH, along with opportunities to win Game Pass codes.

The campaign application opens on International Women’s Day, March 8, and runs through the month. Selected streamers will receive Game Pass and game codes, joining our paid campaign for Early Access.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Partnership to invest in downtown Edmonton

[. 28. The agreement will help unleash further opportunity for the city to promote economic growth, vibrancy, safe and affordable housing, and community development.

Pending a positive outcome from ongoing negotiations and the successful passage of Budget 2025, Alberta’s government will contribute up to $183.4 million to this work, which will further revitalize the region, boost the economy and support the creation of new housing developments.

“Alberta’s government is proud to be partnering with the City of Edmonton and OEG Sports and Entertainment on this exciting plan to support world-class facilities and services, revitalize downtown Edmonton, and build new housing. This investment will ensure that Edmonton continues to be one of Canada’s and North America’s leading entertainment and event districts.”

    Danielle Smith, Premier

The total cost for all projects is $408.2 million, which will be shared by all three partners. When complete, it is estimated that the event park will add more than $70 million to local gross domestic product. Alberta’s government will provide $158.4 million through grants and $25 million by extending the term of the Edmonton Capital City Downtown Community Revitalization Levy (CRL), for a total commitment of up to $183.4 million.

Of the province’s total contribution, $55 million is being contributed to the $90 million cost demolition of the Coliseum at Exhibition Lands and site improvements and $97 million is being contributed to the $250 million cost of the event park.

Recently, the Edmonton City Council Executive Committee took the first step towards approving a 10-year extension to the Downtown CRL to allow investment into these projects and other catalyst proposals in the city’s core.

These priority projects will provide residents and visitors with year-round access to sports, culture and entertainment activities, as well as improve safety and security in Edmonton’s downtown. The Government of Alberta will not build, own or operate any aspect of these projects.

“Alberta’s municipalities are vital to our province’s identity and success so we’re supporting their growth and prosperity. These priority projects will revitalize downtown Edmonton, attract visitors, spur economic growth and diversification, and build attainable housing.”

Ric McIver, Minister of Municipal Affairs

“This funding is a promising initial step towards accelerating housing options and expanding economic opportunities in our city. The provincial government and OEGSE have been collaborative partners in this negotiation and though we still have far to go, I am hopeful that this commitment will signal Edmonton’s support for development and investment in our core neighbourhoods.”

Amarjeet Sohi, mayor, City of Edmonton

In addition, this agreement will support the development of much-needed housing in the capital city. Alberta’s government will contribute $31.4 million toward the cost of public infrastructure site servicing for the Village at ICE District, which will provide about 2,500 new residences north of Rogers Place. The total investment from all partners to create more housing options, including affordable and attainable housing and student accommodations will be $68.2 million.

“We are proud of our work to date with the development of Rogers Place and surrounding facilities and look forward to building on that success through this new agreement with the Government of Alberta and City of Edmonton. Rogers Place is not only the home of the Edmonton Oilers, it is a gathering place for residents, visitors and community groups from across Oil Country to come together in the heart of our city. The arena and surrounding developments have also become catalytic drivers of private investment and revitalization in Edmonton’s downtown core. We still have lots of work to do to attract more residents, visitors and investment downtown, and this agreement is a significant step in the right direction that will add the community programming, activity, vibrancy and housing needed to continue our revitalization efforts.”

Tim Shipton, EVP, External Affairs, OEGSE

Budget 2025 is meeting the challenge faced by Alberta with continued investments in education and health, lower taxes for families and a focus on the economy.

    Quick facts

    • The total cost of the Edmonton projects is $408.2 million. Of the up to $183.4 million provided by Alberta’s government:
      • $97 million is being contributed to the $250 million cost of the event park.
      • $55 million is being contributed to the $90 million cost for the coliseum demolition and site improvements.
      • $31.4 million is being contributed to the total $68.2 million cost of site servicing for the Village at ICE District North.
    • The Alberta government is providing $158.4 million through grants and $25 million through the Edmonton CRL for a total of up to $183.4 million.
    • The Government of Alberta will not build, own or operate any aspect of these projects.
    • Alberta’s investment of up to $183.4 million for these City of Edmonton infrastructure improvements is similar to the support that the Government of Alberta committed for Calgary’s event centre project in April 2023.
      • While Calgary received more provincial funding for their project, Alberta government funding represented 27 percent of the overall costs. Meanwhile, Edmonton is receiving 40 per cent of its overall costs for the event park and Village at ICE District North site servicing.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: New Levy Artisan Market set for spring opening

    Source: City of Manchester

A new monthly artisan day and night market to open in Levenshulme from April 2025.

The new market which will be known as Levy Artisan Market will bring freshly baked produce, independent food stalls, and unique artisan products to the already vibrant area of Levenshulme.

Levy Artisan Market will launch on Sunday 13th April and will take place the second Sunday of every month. There will also be an exciting night market on the last Friday of every month from 25th April 25.

Councillor Garry Bridges, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Levy Market has been a long standing and much-loved institution for the local community and it’s traders, imbued a rich heritage and an asset which has set foundations for other markets to thrive.

“We are really proud to welcome Independent Street’s Artisan Levy Market onto the site, the end product of a collaborative approach to bring a new market offering to the people of Levenshulme.

“The new market will provide a unique space for small businesses, artisans, and food vendors, allowing them to thrive whilst also contributing to the local economy and offering residents and visitors access to high-quality products, delicious street food, and a welcoming social environment.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Does Kneecap’s Bafta win signal changing UK attitudes to British colonialism in Ireland?

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Finola Kerrigan, Professor of Marketing, University of Birmingham

Riotous Irish film Kneecap has attracted much critical and public acclaim since it debuted at Sundance in January 2024 as the festival’s first Irish-language film, winning the prestigious NEXT audience award.

Its Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh the following July saw it scoop best Irish film, the audience award and the Irish language feature film award. It was selected also as an entry for best international feature film and best original song at this year’s Oscars (but was unsuccessful in securing a nomination). Now Kneecap’s latest film honour comes from Britain, where its writer and director Rich Peppiatt won outstanding debut at the Baftas last month.

The film, which mixes fantasy with reality, tells the hilarious tale of struggling real-life Irish-language rap group Kneecap (who play themselves in the film) as they become the unlikely face of the civil rights campaign to recognise the Irish language – also known as Gaelic. The bio on the group’s website states theirs “is a voice which comes screaming from the too-often deprived areas of the North of Ireland, speaking in a language which is too-often ignored”.

The social and political impact of the arts and culture has long been established. Funding is often available for films that support the cultural agenda of nation states, and this plays a significant role in terms of soft power, a concept developed by political scientist Joseph Nye.

Academic Alan Bradshaw’s review captures the complexity of the themes of the film and its attempt to distance younger people – “the ceasefire generation” – from those of us who lived through the period of civil unrest commonly referred to as the Troubles.

The Kneecap rappers are focused on advocating for the rights (cearta) of the people of Northern Ireland. Their open criticism of British rule, expressed through their music and film led to objections to them receiving public subsidies from the British taxpayer.

However, consideration of the funding for the production reflects the central themes of the film. Northern Ireland Screen, the BFI, Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán (Ireland’s independent media regulator) and TG4 (an Irish public service broadcaster providing film and television in Gaelic) collectively funded the film, demonstrating the strong creative collaborations that have developed over the past few years across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the UK.

While it is not uncommon to see UK-Irish co-productions – ironically, perhaps, the UK and Ireland are largely treated as one territory for film distribution – usually such collaboration is related to the shared use of English. In this case, Irish language is at the centre of the storytelling, highlighting the contentious history behind this shared use of English.

The Irish language is not just the language in which the story is told, it is at the very heart of the film. In 2020, the Gaelic film Arracht (English title Monster), a story of the Irish famine, was screened in British cinemas and was Ireland’s entry for the 2020 Academy Awards, but it was not nominated for any awards in the UK.

While Arracht dealt with the famine, illustrating the destructive impact of colonial rule on the Irish people, culture and language, in 2022 An Cailín Ciúin (A Quiet Girl)
demonstrated the beauty of the Gaelic language and provided many audiences outside of Ireland with their first opportunity to see a film in Irish.

Kneecap shifts the focus forward to contemporary Northern Ireland and the fight to resuscitate and reinstate the Irish language in the six counties still under British rule. This was eventually recognised in 2022 when the UK parliament passed the Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act.

The film’s Bafta win and Oscar entry follow on from The Quiet Girl, which made it onto the Academy Awards’ shortlist for best international feature film and garnered Bafta nominations for best film not in the English language, and best screenplay (adapted), in 2023.

Although in terms of pace and energy, Kneecap and The Quiet Girl could not be more different, both films are in the Irish language. The Quiet Girl earned over US$6.5 million (£5 million) globally at the box office – the first film in the Irish language to break the US$1m mark – while Kneecap has earned US$4.5 million so far.

Kneecap’s Oscar ambitions may have been thwarted, but its success at the Baftas demonstrates the significance of film in terms of reflecting contemporary politics, shining a light on UK-Irish relations and the relevance of Northern Ireland both politically and culturally.

The 1998 Good Friday agreement, brought an end to the Troubles, and addressed the decades of imbalance in the rights of Northern Irish Catholic citizens in relation to governance, civil and political rights as well as cultural rights.

The right to use the Irish language was finally acknowledged as a cultural right and was reinstated as an official language of Northern Ireland in 2022 following the repeal of a penal law from 1737 which established English as the only language permissible in courts.

This fundamental right to your native language is the key theme in Kneecap, focusing on opposing the legacy of British colonial oppression of language and culture. Its success in receiving public funding, delighting UK critics and audiences alike, as well as winning a prestigious British film award is well worth reflecting upon.

Does this demonstrate that Britain is beginning to recognise the damage of colonialism on the psyche, culture and economics of those who are oppressed and disposed? Is this acceptance of the living legacy of colonialism?

Giving the Bafta for outstanding debut for Kneecap to Peppiatt – an Englishman living in Belfast – can perhaps be seen as the start of such recognition. But it may be too early for a film opposing colonial British rule to be awarded the award for outstanding British film.

Finola Kerrigan does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Chaotic cosmic clones and the Joker reinvented – what to watch and read this week

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Anna Walker, Senior Arts + Culture Editor

When director Robert Eggers asked him what kind of movies he was interested in, Robert Pattinson said: “I only wanna do strange things.” It seems he’s taken the same approach to stardom as fellow teen star, Daniel Radcliffe – make your name in a big-budget franchise, then spend the rest of your career starring in the interesting, the unexpected and downright weird.

Since his turn as the sparkle-skinned teen vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, Pattinson has played a tortured lighthouse keeper, a celibate space prisoner and a city slicker who barely leaves his limousine. Even his iteration of Batman was kooky – a tragic, lonely hero in smudged black eye make-up.

    The trailer for Mickey 17.

So, it’s no wonder that he jumped at the chance to star in Mickey 17. The latest film by renowned Korean writer-director Bong Joon-ho, it follows a mission to establish a human settlement on an inhospitable alien planet in the year 2054. In this imagined future, it has become possible to replicate human beings with total accuracy using an advanced form of 3D printing.

Although outlawed on ethical grounds back on Earth, human printing is legal in the remote regions of space. There, disposable workers known as “expendables” can be reprinted on demand each time they perish. Our reviewer, an expert in science fiction, said: “Like Bong’s earlier films, Mickey 17 combines artful world-building, an impeccable cast, social satire, anarchic humour – and a taste for the grotesque.”

    Villains and heroes

Pattinson’s Batman has yet to face the Joker, the character’s arch nemesis, and a recurring role that is even more prized among actors than Bruce Wayne. But Vera Drew, who co-writes, directs and stars as several iterations of the character in her new film The People’s Joker, hasn’t let a casting director get in the way of her ambitions.

The trailer for The People’s Joker.

In this surreal, hilarious – and very much unofficial – film, Drew plays a mix of both Harley Quinn and the Joker. It’s a queer twist on the DC universe, and a metaphor for the difficulties she encountered as a transgender teen.

For our reviewers, experts in comic books and their adaptations, it was a breath of fresh air. Proof that, in the era of Marvel’s box office dominance, there is still room for unique remixes of familiar superhero stories.

The most streamed TV series on Netflix this week is the new drama Toxic Town – and deservedly so. It tells the true story of a group of women from Corby in Northamptonshire, UK, who gave birth to children with limb differences in the 1980s and 90s. The children were born with shortened arms or legs or missing fingers.

The drama follows their battle to uncover the cause and their subsequent fight for justice. It makes for compelling viewing, with standout performances from former Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker and White Lotus’s Aimee Lou Wood.

    The trailer for Toxic Town.

We asked a pair of climate researchers to review the show. They found it to be a “stark warning about the dangers of weak environmental protections”. Far from being a thing of the past, they argue that we could return to the toxic times seen in Corby if we fail to prioritise stringent environmental safeguards.

Toxic Town is now streaming on Netflix

    Timely storytelling

For more culture with a message this week, we highly recommend No Other Land. Winner of the Oscar for best documentary feature film, it chronicles the efforts of Palestinian townspeople to combat an Israeli plan to demolish their villages in the West Bank and use the area as a military training ground.

The trailer for No Other Land.

The film was directed by four Palestinian and Israeli activists and journalists including Basel Adra, who is a resident of the area facing demolition. The film’s subject matter has made it difficult to attract distributors in many countries, including the US. British viewers, though, can stream the film for free on Channel 4.

No Other Land is now in select cinemas and streaming on Channel 4

Show Don’t Tell is the new short story collection from Curtis Sittenfeld. She’s the American writer behind Rodham, the 2020 novel that reimagined the life of Hilary Clinton. Offering slices of life in the American Midwest, it’s a profound exploration of individual and social conflict at a time when the US is on the verge of momentous political change.

Many of Sittenfeld’s characters are experiencing a low-level sense of dread. Some are obsessed with death. But the stories remind us that, considering the chaotic past decade, where catastrophe and complex political issues have dominated American lives, fear and anxiety are an entirely reasonable emotional response.

Our reviewer, an expert in American literature and history, read all 12 stories in one sitting. She found them to be moving, witty and achingly real.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Women always suffer in times of conflict. Yet the arms industry is accused of gender washing war

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Rosie Walters, Lecturer in International Relations, Cardiff University

A displaced Yemeni woman makes food for her children in the camp where they live in the city of Taiz. akramalrasny/Shutterstock

International Women’s Day, marked each year on March 8, is all about celebrating women and furthering efforts towards gender equality. Companies are keen to join these conversations and shout about their achievements on a day when minds are focused on female empowerment. But this has led to accusations of hypocrisy.

In 2021, one user on X created the Gender Pay Gap bot. Until 2023,this automated account reposted companies’ supportive messages about International Women’s Day, quoting information about their gender pay gap. The bot’s posts received tens of thousands of views and shares, showing an appetite for calling out misleading corporate claims about women’s empowerment.

Activists and researchers label these misleading actions “gender washing”. It describes communications and practices that present corporations as taking action on gender inequalities even as they engage in things that may be harmful to women and girls.

Gender washing takes many forms. It might be, for example, sponsoring girls’ education programmes without addressing known practices of child labour and sexual harassment in supply chains. Or it could be applying for corporate social responsibility awards while facing lawsuits for discrimination against female employees.

Our research examines global arms manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman. It is estimated that the global arms trade as a whole was worth US$138 billion (£109 billion) in 2022 (the last year for which data are compiled).

It is hard to say how many people are killed by these weapons, but at a minimum it numbers in the tens of thousands each year. Beyond this, the after-effects of weapons use include displacement, starvation and health emergencies, as has been seen in Yemen.

Arms manufacturers continue to produce and sell weapons that cause untold suffering (including to women) across the world. But interestingly, arms manufacturers also issue communications celebrating International Women’s Day.

    Careers in science and tech

Where previous research highlights how gender washing shows corporations or their products in a positive light, our research revealed bigger effects. We found that, through joint communications with governments and militaries, arms manufacturers were engaged in the process of gender washing war itself.

By posting for International Women’s Day, these companies portray the technologies and corporate operations of warfare as empowering to women and girls. They show women succeeding in science and technology careers, and girls receiving inspirational talks and science education, while saying nothing about what that science is being used for.

For example, Lockheed Martin Middle East and Africa shared a video on X showing a group of female engineers at the company’s innovation centre in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The post states that the company is “committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers through real-world #STEM education”.

The video shows a group of women wearing traditional Emirati dress in futuristic labs. They are interacting with touchscreen images of helicopters flying over deserts, examining a drone and sitting next to magnifying glasses. The soundtrack is like something out of a Hollywood action movie.

But the women do not speak for themselves. We are supposed to assume that, thanks to Lockheed Martin, they are being educated in cutting-edge technology and empowered to pursue careers in science. They get hands-on experience using the very military technologies being deployed in many parts of their region.

Lockheed Martin’s sale of weapons to warring parties in the Middle East, including arms sold to Saudi Arabia with devastating consequences for Yemeni women, is presented as a learning opportunity, “inspiring” women of the Middle East into science careers.

For its part, Lockheed Martin said in its 2023 gender pay gap report that it had closed the salary gap by 12.1% since 2017. It also said its investment in STEM activities helped it to focus on a future pipeline of female talent.

We also found that some corporations attempt to join progressive conversations without actually saying anything at all. We label this “constructive silences”. This is where companies say nothing of substance on gender issues, and do not reveal any efforts to tackle gender inequalities within their own practices. But nonetheless they tap into conversations about International Women’s Day that might enhance their reputations.

A post on X from Lockheed Martin India uses International Women’s Day hashtags. But there is no clear link to the accompanying text, which does not mention women specifically. Nor is there any connection to initiatives to address gender inequalities. Instead it talks about how “an inclusive environment” helps employees to “develop innovative solutions”.

This matters because – through social media – arms manufacturers present technologies of war as a force for public good. It is easier to deflect criticism of the harms created by your products when you can point to your efforts supporting women’s empowerment.

These posts for International Women’s Day, and other gender-washing practices, make it easier for governments to continue subsidising the arms industry, buying and using weaponry, and issuing licenses for the sale of weapons in conflicts across the globe. All the while, they give the impression that the corporations producing those weapons are educating and empowering women and girls.

This International Women’s Day, take a look for yourself. Think about which companies are professing care for women and what harms might they be obscuring.

In a statement to The Conversation, a spokesman for Lockheed Martin said: Lockheed Martin’s core business safeguards human rights by advancing cutting-edge technologies that help US and allied defence forces promote deterrence and protect their people. We adhere to strict and ethical business practices guided by US government laws, regulations and policies related to international military sales and the use of products sold to international customers. Our company culture is collaborative and respectful, which allows all of our team members to impactfully contribute to our mission-critical work.

Raytheon and Northrop Grumman were also approached for comment about the claims made in this article, but did not respond by the time we published.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Welding competitions offer avenue for recruiting

Source: US International Brotherhood of Boilermakers

It was a great success. The Wallace State president said this was a success, let’s keep doing it

    Lee Aurand-Hosey, SAJAC recruiter

As work increases the demand for skilled Boilermakers also rises. Welding competitions—or welding rodeos—can help increase awareness among students while also identifying new Boilermaker recruits. So that’s what the Boilermakers, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Wallace State Community College, did in December.

Southeast Area Joint Apprentice Committee recruiter Lee Aurand Hosey said the International President Tim Simmons encouraged him to hold welding competitions as a recruitment strategy.

“So I approached TVA and asked if they would be willing to host a weld competition,” he said.

After securing the venue at Wallace State Community College, Aurand Hosey and Randy Hammond, weld supervisor at the college, spent six months planning what he hopes will become a yearly event. Aurand Hosey said without Hammond, they wouldn’t have had the welding rodeo, which they needed because TVA and the Boilermakers union in general, need more welders.

“At TVA we’re the number one craft,” Aurand Hosey said. “The only way to get into the TVA workforce program is through the unions. They have a great need for more Boilermaker mechanic/welders over the next 10 years.”

He said events like welding competitions can identify students who are talented and interested in becoming a Boilermaker.

“I spent 20 years in the field, so I know what these guys are looking for. The opportunity is there,” he said. “It’s getting the word out.”

The first TVA-Boilermaker welding rodeo had 56 competitors, which Aurand Hosey hopes to increase at the 2025 competition. More people signed up, but many had to drop out because they couldn’t get their school to sponsor the trip. He said he plans to contact schools well ahead of time and advocate for funding.

Competitors were able to sign up and choose which welding process they wanted to test on, either SMAW, FCAW or the GTAW process in the 6G position. Aurand Hosey said not everyone is skilled at every process as most were young community college students. That’s why we’re offering the opportunity of the apprenticeship to learn all welding processes.

After their booth assignment, competitors began welding plates. On the plates, they had to weld three different positions: 2G vertical, 3G horizontal and 4G overhead.

“A lot of facilities aren’t teaching overhead,” he said, noting Boilermakers do a lot of overhead work. “And 4G is not a big teaching focus.”

Volunteer judges from TVA, Enerfab, AECON, Day & Zimmerman and APM were joined by people from International, recruiters, Southeast International Reps and business agents. Also helping were volunteers from the four locals that have members working at TVA: Local 108 (Birmingham), L-40 (Elizabethtown, Kentucky), L-454 (Chattanooga Tennessee) and L-455 (Sheffield, Alabama).

“Everybody came through,” Aurand Hosey said. “The vendors and especially TVA really showed up and helped. The Boilermakers were there and provided a lot of information to these kids. It was a great success. The Wallace State president said this was a success, let’s keep doing it.”

Aurand Hosey said the local lodges wanted to introduce real-world opportunity to the students at the competition.  Students were able to speak with contractors, owners and business agents. At the event, Boilermakers signed around 15 new recruits, and the phone is still ringing with inquiries.

“The competitors didn’t know much about the Boilermaker apprenticeship, and we were there to inform them about union opportunities. They’re excited about the chance to join the union and be able to see new horizons.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Lord Mayor (and real ale campaigner) launches Stoke Beer and Cider Festival

    Source: City of Stoke-on-Trent

    Published: Friday, 7th March 2025

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent served pints on Tuesday in a city pub to launch the 40th Stoke Beer and Cider Festival.

Members of the area’s Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) group joined Councillor Lyn Sharpe in the Holy Inadequate in Etruria.

Cllr Sharpe has a long history of supporting the real ale sector and in 2017 was named CAMRA’s National campaigner of the year- one of only six women to get this award in the organisation’s history.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council and CAMRA worked together to make sure this year’s landmark festival could take place and return to the King’s Hall.

She poured pints made in the pub’s on-site brewery and chatted to the organisers about the festival which coincides with the city’s 100-year centenary celebrations.

The festival takes place from 15-18 October 2025 in the King’s Hall and features over 140 ales and over 50 ciders and perry made by breweries from Staffordshire and across the UK.

Cllr Sharpe said: “There aren’t many cities that have been able to host 39 annual beer festivals. I’m proud to have volunteered every year at this festival since the eighth one.

“And I’ll be there in October with my fellow hard-working volunteers from CAMRA. It’s a lovely coincidence that this 40th festival is happening in the same year we celebrate the city turning one hundred.”

Nick Pellington from Stoke CAMRA said: “Our festival brings together the very best breweries from across the region and UK all under one roof.

“Each year we attract tourists and day trippers from near and far who want to sample the local drinks and food while learning more about our brewing history.

“Along with real ales and ciders, we will have a foreign beer bar and a gin and rum bar.

“Tickets will be on sale soon and I’d encourage people to put the dates in their calendar now.”

Attendees can also enjoy live music and a variety of food stalls throughout the festival.

Tickets will be available soon. Keep an eye on https://potteries.camra.org.uk/ for the latest information.

  • MIL-OSI Global: New Dietrich Bonhoeffer biopic is a grossly misleading portrait of the anti-Nazi dissident

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Barry Langford, Professor of Film Studies, Royal Holloway University of London

The complexities of history have always posed problems for commercial cinema. With rare exceptions, mainstream historical films tend to flatten the inconveniently irregular textures of individual biographies and their context into simpler templates of good and evil, valour and villainy.

This is abundantly true of dramatisations of German resistance in the Third Reich. Of course, there can be no overstating the enormity of Nazi crimes, the unquestionable courage of the regime’s all-too-few committed opponents – and the terrible price they almost all inevitably paid. So it’s perhaps understandable that people such as Claus von Stauffenberg (leader of the July 20 1944 attempt on Hitler’s life), or student dissident Sophie Scholl, have been portrayed in fairly one-dimensional ways.

Yet acts of extraordinary courage and integrity are thrown into even sharper relief when we appreciate the flaws as well as the nobility of the people who undertake them. Not to do so risks turning these heroic, yet all too human, people into plaster saints.

Sadly, director Todd Komarnicki’s earnest but painfully reductive new biopic of the Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-45) falls into all of these familiar traps.

Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here.

Executed in the final days of the second world war, Bonhoeffer’s heroism is beyond question. From the very start of Nazi rule, and fully aware of the likely consequences, he stood in uncompromising, public opposition. He saw Nazi tyranny, above all, as an assault on Christian values.

Bonhoeffer drove a campaign to repudiate the Nazi efforts to co-opt and “Aryanise” mainstream Protestantism. And he helped to establish the dissenting “confessing church”.

Eventually he became a peripheral part of the network seeking to assassinate Hitler, though he was not a prime mover. By the time of the failed July 1944 bomb plot (one of several botched assassination attempts), he was already imprisoned.

The film’s publicity, with its tagline “Pastor. Spy. Assassin” and ludicrous poster image of Bonhoeffer (Jonas Dassler) brandishing a pistol, erroneously implies otherwise.

    The trailer for Bonhoeffer.

    The real Bonhoeffer

Bonhoeffer’s opposition to Nazism was moral, spiritual and expressed principally in his work as a theologian and teacher.

His posthumously collected writings run to 17 volumes. Yet Bonhoeffer fluffs the essential task of making its hero’s religious faith dramatically compelling.

The film prefers to imagine him as a figure of conventional derring-do, conspiring in cafés, infiltrating Nazi intelligence and personally ferrying Jewish fugitives across the Swiss border.

All these scenes have some minor basis in Bonhoeffer’s biography. But cumulatively they misrepresent the essence of his anti-Nazi dissidence to the point of seriously distorting the historical record.

One glaring example is the film’s depiction of his response to the Holocaust. Bonhoeffer denounced Jewish persecution at Nazi hands earlier, more forcefully and more consistently than almost any of his colleagues. Yet his opposition remained limited and complexly bound up with his Christian convictions.

He was not, as the film suggests, a proto-Schindler rescuer; nor was he, or could he have been, impelled to action by viewing (non-existent) clandestine film of the death camps, as a very ahistorical scene implies.

Bohoeffer imposes a wholly anachronistic modern comprehension of the Holocaust as Nazism’s defining crime, as if this will make its protagonist’s actions more admirable. In doing so, it ends up muffling the more complex particularities of his courage.

Such inaccurate scenes abound. Bonhoeffer is mystifyingly slipshod on basic historical accuracy. Switching confusingly and with inadequate signposting between his final hours and his earlier life, the film includes such howlers as dissidents threatened with transfer to the “eastern front”, apparently in the mid-1930s.

There’s also a cartoonishly lurid depiction of the Nazis’ attempted “Aryanisation” of the church. Swastikas block stained-glass windows and Bibles are swapped for Mein Kampf in pulpits.

    Melodrama over history

The film’s portrait of German society during the Third Reich is also grossly misleading. Cadre of uniformed Nazis aside, we encounter barely a single German citizen who supports the regime. Wider German society is represented by the congregation who enthusiastically applaud a (fictitious) anti-Nazi sermon while the SS stage a huffy but mysteriously peaceful walkout.

Again and again, Bonhoeffer substitutes difficult history for conventionalised melodrama. Shortly before his arrest in 1943 the 36-year-old Bonhoeffer became engaged to his former confirmation pupil, a girl of barely 18.

His filmic avatar, by contrast, seems to lack any personal life whatsoever. Beyond, that is, an admittedly endearing affinity for jazz acquired during his seminary studies in New York (though seeing Bonhoeffer replace a Black female pianist onstage at a Harlem club, to apparently universal enthusiasm, leaves a sour taste).

Even Bonhoeffer’s execution – which may have in reality been protracted and excruciating – is rendered as a bloodlessly ethereal affair. The moment is as sentimentally devotional as any studio-era Hollywood hagiography.

Bonhoeffer’s posthumous standing, like that of other German anti-Nazis, has grown immensely. Since 1998, his limestone effigy has stood above Westminster Abbey’s west door as one of ten “modern martyrs.” But Bonhoeffer misses the opportunity to breathe credible dramatic life into this sainted figure.

The Conversation approached the director and writer of Bonhoeffer, Todd Komarnicki, for comment.

He told us that his screenplay was informed by the biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer written in 1966 by Bonhoeffer’s best friend, Eberhard Bethge. As part of a lengthy response, Komarnicki also maintained that the film’s depiction of Bonhoeffer’s involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler is accurate. He also argued that it was reasonable to speculate that Bonhoeffer could have seen the footage from the death camps. While he agreed that Dietrich did not literally take the Jewish prisoners into Switzerland as a proto-Schindler rescuer, he said: “I took the dramatic license in the film to illustrate the fact that his bravery did save actual Jewish lives.”

He continued “Bonhoeffer is not a documentary. I have written many true life movies, and the necessity to alter timelines and to choose metaphor over fact (only when the metaphor supports the fact) comes up now and again … It is the job of cinema to entertain and inspire, to instruct and imagine. That is what the art form requires if it hopes to be any good at all. Every frame of my film tried to honour the man at its centre. And to tell the truth.”

A Spirit Born from the Heart of Canadian Agriculture

The grains are carefully selected to ensure the highest quality, maintaining the purity and richness of the land they come from. Combined with Canada’s famously pristine water sources, these raw materials form the foundation of Spirit of York’s handcrafted spirits, delivering an authentically Canadian taste experience.

By sourcing directly from local farmers, Spirit of York not only guarantees premium quality but also strengthens Canada’s agricultural economy, supporting Canadian jobs and ensuring the sustainability of local grain production. This dedication to homegrown ingredients is a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to producing spirits that are truly, unmistakably Canadian.

  • MIL-OSI: Plug-in Mesh Home Battery Debuts from Pila Energy at SXSW

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

AUSTIN, Texas, March 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — SXSW 2025 — Power outages are happening more often, lasting longer, and leaving homeowners and renters vulnerable. Today at SXSW 2025, Pila Energy introduced the Pila Mesh Home Battery, the first plug-in, modular in-home battery that delivers intelligent, automatic backup power throughout the home.

Pila’s smart backup battery automatically powers essential appliances and rooms during outages—no rewiring, no extension cords, just seamless, integrated backup power for homeowners and renters alike. Unlike gas generators, Pila Batteries are silent, maintenance-free, and work indoors. Pila’s smart mesh technology seamlessly connects multiple batteries throughout the home, coordinating them to store solar or utility power and optimize stored energy for outage protection, bill savings, and more.

Starting at $999 for early access reservation holders, Pila is the most cost-effective home battery. Its modular design lets households expand backup power as needed, eliminating the high upfront costs of traditional systems. Early Access Reservations are now open at www.PilaEnergy.com. Visit Pila Energy at SXSW Expo booth #821 to learn more and see a demonstration.

    How Pila Works
Pila batteries plug into standard wall outlets, making them the simplest home battery to install. Consumers place Pila batteries where power matters most—on top of the fridge to keep food safe, in the home office to stay connected, next to the home’s sump pump to prevent flooding, and beyond. Pila’s sleek, compact design was developed in collaboration with award-winning Bould Design to blend seamlessly into any space.

Pila is designed to fit the needs and budget of any home. Start with one battery and expand backup power to more rooms as needed. As more batteries are added, Pila’s smart mesh system seamlessly synchronizes them to manage home power intelligently—just like a Wi-Fi mesh network optimizes home internet.

Each Pila Mesh Home Battery stores 1.6–3.2 kWh of energy, enough to power a fridge, charge phones, and run laptops for up to 2–3 days during an outage. For longer backup, additional Pila batteries can be placed throughout the home, or the Pila Expansion Pack can double the backup time for a specific room or appliance. Pila can recharge daily during an outage when paired with a plug-in solar panel, providing effectively unlimited backup power.

    What Sets Pila Apart

    • First Home Battery Designed as a Flexible Mesh Network. Like Wi-Fi mesh systems that optimize home internet, Pila’s modular batteries work together in the background to optimize energy usage across your home.
    • Smart and Affordable Backup Power. Pila lets users add backup power where needed most—without the high upfront cost of traditional systems. With a standard 5-year warranty and 10-year battery lifetime, Pila delivers affordable, long-lasting backup power.
    • No Rewiring, Easy Expansion. Plug Pila into any standard wall outlet—no rewiring, no complicated setup. Need more power? Adding additional Pila batteries takes seconds. Moving? Just unplug them and bring them with you.
    • Smarter Over Time. The Pila App, available for iOS and Android, provides real-time insights into home energy use, 24/7 monitoring of critical appliances like the fridge, and power outage alerts from anywhere. Free over-the-air updates deliver new features and improvements over time.
    • Sleek, All-in-One Design. Pila combines a safe LFP battery system, controllable smart power outlets, high-power USB charging ports, and a customizable display—all in one compact, elegant form.

    Pila’s Mission: Affordable Energy Independence
Growing up in New Orleans, Pila founder Cole Ashman saw firsthand how devastating power outages can be. When Hurricane Katrina hit, entire neighborhoods sat in darkness for days, resulting in thousands of ruined refrigerators piled up on curbs throughout the city—a stark symbol of the nation’s fragile power system.

“I’ll never forget that devastation,” Ashman recalls. “Today, outages are even more frequent as our aging grid struggles to keep up with the increasing intensity of natural disasters. Pila aims to change that—to put smart, safe peace of mind within reach for every home and apartment.”

As a former SPAN product leader and a Tesla Powerwall engineer, Ashman designed Pila to bring infrastructure-grade energy solutions to everyday homes. “We built Pila at a price point that won’t break the bank while ensuring it has the intelligence to integrate with home energy systems and the power grid.”

    Investor & Industry Backing
Pila Energy has received early-stage funding from Refactor Capital, Climate Capital, Jetstream, Looking Glass, and R7 Partners.

“At Refactor, we back companies improving efficiency and scale in their respective industries. Pila’s smart battery system represents the next generation of home energy control and resilience, poised to disrupt the market,” said Zal Bilimoria, Founding Partner at Refactor. “We are very impressed with Pila’s innovative vision and the speed at which they have realized the product. With increased natural disasters, our homes and most essential electrical infrastructure must become energy-independent and grid-supportive over the next decade.”

Pre-Order Now – The Smartest, Most Affordable Home Battery

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Things to Know: How to Make the Most of Daylight Savings with Your Samsung Devices

    Source: Samsung

With Daylight Savings Time approaching on March 9, we’re not just springing our clocks forward – it’s also the perfect opportunity to give our home electronics some much-needed attention.
While checking smoke detector batteries is a time-honored tradition, why not extend that care to all your essential devices?
We’ve designed Samsung’s appliances and devices to be as user-friendly — and in need of as little routine care as possible — but a little TLC now and then is a good idea to keep home appliances, personal devices, and more performing at their best and running smoothly. As part of our Things To Know series, we partnered with the Samsung Customer Care team to explore a few easy ways to give our Samsung tech a fresh new start as we reset our clocks for spring, too.
Give Your Samsung Oven a Deep-Clean (the Easy Way)
Gone are the days of harsh chemicals and endless scrubbing – Samsung’s ovens have been engineered not just with sleek design and chef-worthy performance, but with cleaning solutions that do the heavy lifting for you.
All Samsung ovens come with a self-clean function that handles the brunt of the labor — some models even come with additional Steam Cleaning and Descaling functions for more hands-free effort. While the high-heat self-clean function essentially incinerates burnt-on food (making your job one of wiping up, versus scrubbing), the Steam Clean (or, on some models, Hybrid Clean) mode is great for more routine deep cleaning that’s still relatively hands-off.
P.S. While your oven’s working hard, it’s a great time to give those oven racks a wash, too — ensuring you have an all-around fresh start for spring.

    Digital Declutter for Peak Performance
Samsung’s phones and tablets come with large amounts of space available to hold videos, selfies, emails, downloads, and other digital ephemera — but who among us hasn’t lived in fear of a low-memory notification popping up someday?
Take advantage of this seasonal transition to clean up your digital closet with a clear-out of your device’s memory. Delete those apps you never use, get rid of those e-books and podcasts you’ve been finished with for months now, and send those duplicate photos to the trash. Not only will you free up storage space, but your phone will function more productively too.

Fresh Filters for Crisp, Clean Hydration
Resetting the clocks is also a great time to check in on your Samsung refrigerator’s water filter and see if it needs a refresh, too. We’ve designed our top-of-the-line filters to deliver fresh, clean water at the touch of a button (or sensor), but even they need a little upkeep sometimes.
Every six months is a great benchmark for replacing your filter, but if you’re not sure of the last time you swapped them out, keep an eye out for the built-in indicator light on the inside of your refrigerator. When it’s time for a change, simply match your model number to ensure a perfect fit, and don’t forget to hit reset so it can begin tracking usage again.
Pro tip: Only use Samsung Genuine Water Filters to avoid complications with your water supply or appliance.

Make Your Dishwasher Sparkle Like New
Even your trusty dishwasher needs occasional pampering. As we reset the clocks after a busy holiday season of entertaining friends and family, it’s a great time to make sure that your dishwasher itself is as clean as it can be — which makes it all the better to clean your dishes with.
Start with the outside: Use a soft, damp cloth to remove any stains or gunk. For the interior, harness the power of your dishwasher’s Sanitize cycle: place a cup of white vinegar in the lower rack and let the machine work its magic. Self Clean cycles are also integrated into a lot of Samsung dishwashers, which makes cleaning the inside of your dishwasher a one-touch job.
These two programs will help keep your Samsung dishwasher doing its best all year long — but to help it out in the meantime, we always suggest rinsing dishes before you load them in the machine, too.

Keep Your Washing Machine Running Like New
Like dishwashers, Samsung washing machines do a great job of cleaning — but sometimes need their own refresh. Regular maintenance prevents odors and mold from building up, and spring is the perfect time to give your washer some attention – especially before tackling heavy-duty spring cleaning tasks.
Queue up your washer’s Self-Clean, Self-Clean+, or Pure Cycle to give the interior a hygienic refresh and clean parts of the tub where moisture and detergent residue tend to accumulate. You don’t need to add any special cleaner for this, but if there’s a little mold smell going on already, some bleach might not be a bad idea. Don’t have these cycles? A standard washing machine cleaner works just as well.
It’s also a good time to clean other critical parts of the washer: Remove and wipe out the detergent drawers (and, ideally, wipe them clean between washes), and use an old toothbrush or other soft brush to clean the recess for the drawer, too.
And while it might sound scary, cleaning out the pump filter on your front-load washer is easier than it sounds — just have a receptacle handy to catch the water under the panel. Then, open the panel at the bottom of the washer, remove the hose from where it’s hanging, and twist the cap until water begins to come out of the hose. Once it’s all drained, remove the washer pump filter itself and give it a gentle cleaning.

    Perfecting Your TV’s Picture
Our advanced displays deliver stunning visuals, but a dusty screen can diminish even the most sophisticated tech. Give your TV’s screen a close inspection for dust, spots and more with a simple routine.
Turn off and unplug the TV, then wipe the screen as gently as possible with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, spray a little distilled water on your cloth. Remember to clean the frame too, and allow everything to dry completely before powering up again– then you’re good to start streaming again!

General will replace Jack Pestello, who elected to leave Advantage effective May 1 to pursue new leadership opportunities in retail.

General, a seasoned retail executive with more than 30 years of experience at consumer goods companies, will oversee the Advantage business unit that serves as a strategic extension of consumer-packaged goods companies’ sales and marketing teams, with services that include selling to retailers, retail merchandising and omnichannel marketing.

Prior to his time at Henkel, General served as Chief Commercial Officer at Treehouse Foods, where he led the private-brand manufacturer’s commercial transformation, driving profitable revenue and share growth. A dynamic driver of organizational transformation, General also held leadership positions at Newell Brands, The Kraft Heinz Co., Kraft Foods Group, Nabisco and General Mills.

General earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Rider University and holds an Executive Scholar credential from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business.

Pestello, who joined Advantage in 2023, played an integral role in the company’s transformation journey, helping re-segment its business and simplify its operating model.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Scottish Secretary speech on driving economic growth in Scotland

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Speech

Scottish Secretary speech on driving economic growth in Scotland

Speech at the University of Edinburgh setting out how Scotland has the potential to be the engine room of UK growth [political content removed]

    WELCOME

Thank you for having me today

And can I begin by thanking Chris Deerin and Reform Scotland

for helping us bring such a great audience together for the event.

I look forward to speaking with Chris later and taking some questions.

And thanks to both Chris Murray, MP and Christina Boswell, Vice Principal here at University of Edinburgh, for their kind introductions.

And for welcoming us to the Informatics Forum at Edinburgh University,

home to AI excellence since 1963!

1963 – the same year that Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, delivered his “white heat of technology” speech.

And that speech could be delivered today given the pace of technological change and the huge opportunities with AI. Of course, this university, with the passion and expertise of Christina and her colleagues are driving this agenda.

This university will be at the heart of the government’s AI strategy.

The implications for industry, our economy, government, services and society are unlimited and we must grab this with both hands.

I’ve just visited the robotics lab downstairs and it’s mindblowing.

Harold Wilson, of course, warned his audience that if the country was to prosper a “new Britain” would need to be forged in the “white heat” of this “scientific revolution”.

    History is indeed repeating itself.

The AI revolution is happening as we enter a golden age of opportunity.

And Scotland should and will be at the heart of it. Thank you for all you do Christina.

I came to this university as a fresh faced 16 year old,

straight from 5th year at Wester Hailes Education Centre

as the first in my family to go to university.

The Lothians Equal Access Program for Schools was my entry point to this university,

and the gateway to a different life.

The support of dedicated, inspiring and role model teachers at WHEC,

alongside the chance to study here are the reasons I’m able to make this speech today.

The power of education to tear down societal barriers should never be underestimated.

We hear a lot about attainment gaps and Scotland’s failure to close them.

And I promise that is no statistical abstraction or political point to score.

It is about the life chances of every child in Scotland,

and until it is seriously addressed then, make no mistake,

it translates directly into the waste of human talent and denial of opportunity that currently holds Scotland back.

Whether it is an apprenticeship, re-skilling, a degree, a postgraduate qualification,

or simply giving a wee boy from Wester Hailes a chance,

education and training are the biggest and best investments we can make in our economy and our society.

At a conference a few weeks ago I outlined my own journey from growing up in a council estate,

to sitting down at the Cabinet table in Keir Starmer’s government.

That’s a journey that took many twists and turns, from the Codfather Chippy to the Edinburgh Festival.

I had a long career in business and as an entrepreneur before getting into politics.

I actually almost didn’t get into university because I was so bad at the drums.

I was set to fail Higher Music with aplomb!

My music teacher pulled me aside and persuaded me that if I wanted any chance of getting into uni,

    I had to sing instead!

And no… it wasn’t the Hearts song

So after all of that, when I finally sat at that Cabinet table

and looked around at the faces that made up the most working class Cabinet in history,

    I thought of my parents.

I haven’t often talked about this, but my father passed away when I was nine.

My mother raised two boys on her own, working multiple jobs to get by:

Woolworths as a cleaner; the Busy Bee Bar as a cook; a bookies as a cashier.

She worked these jobs because she wanted to give her boys the best possible opportunities in life.

Sitting down at that Cabinet table for the first time I made a promise that every decision I make in government will be in service to working people.

    A government of service.

I learned a lesson from those years to take into my job now.

My mum wasn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves to get things done.

Neither am I – and neither is this government.

And we have had no choice.

But I am proud of how our Plan for Change has already started to work:

The biggest upgrade in workers rights in a generation

an industrial strategy to make sure we can take advantage of the jobs of the future:

GB Energy, publicly owned, headquartered here in Scotland

Glasgow City Region chosen as one of the priority investment areas for the National Wealth Fund

£1.4 billion in local growth spending across Scotland

Harland and Wolff saved thanks to a deal brokered by the UK Government, with sites in Arnish and Methill in Scotland protected

And of course, the announcement from our Prime Minister that we will allocate £200 million from the National Wealth Fund,

to drive investment in a viable industrial future for Grangemouth.

Delivered after the Prime Minister asked me and the Scotland Office to lead a cross-government taskforce to make it happen.

Grangemouth was the first issue on which I was briefed on as Secretary of State.

In just eight months, we have put together a plan for the future.

That £200 million is a signal that this government does not see Grangemouth as a political problem to be solved,

but a huge opportunity for industrial renewal.

And on top of all that, we have delivered the largest budget settlement for the Scottish Government in the history of devolution.

An end to austerity – we promised it in the manifesto and the budget delivered it.

That’s how we fix the foundations, deliver our Plan for Change and begin to turn things around for Scotland.

Turning things around will take time, but I know a thing or two about the hard graft it takes to do that.

My journey from Wester Hailes to Westminster included time working as a small business owner and entrepreneur.

I was broadcasting on the internet years before YouTube.

I was doing live televised karaoke before Pop Idol was even a glint in Simon Cowell’s eye.

I was doing festival events and concerts,

I refurbished and re-opened a derelict hotel in West Linton,

    opened a bar in Newington,

and sports bistro in Edinburgh city centre.

It’s amazing what you learn in a tough industry like hospitality.

Being a small business owner means you have to turn your hand to everything,

from pulling pints, to cleaning toilets.

Though thankfully not always at the same time!

I know the ups and downs of running my own business.

More than once, I had to put the staff wages on a personal credit card,

because no matter how hard it got, the team came first,

they needed to pay their bills.

That’s why, by the way, I am so proud of this government’s make work pay agenda.

    Boosting the minimum wage,

    banning exploitative zero hour contracts,

    ending fire and rehire,

    day one rights for workers.

As a former business owner let me be clear:

page one, line one of your business plan should be how you will pay your staff properly.

More security and better pay for working people will help drive growth.

It’s good for workers and it’s good for business.

It drove growth in that West Linton Hotel.

By working together we turned things around.

That once derelict hotel is still thriving.

There are derelict hotel stories in every community and every sector right across Scotland.

I think of that when I consider how this government has reset the relationship with the Scottish Government.

And we are starting to see fruits of that productive relationship  – such as bringing the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.

And in the range of areas where the Scottish Government has accepted the UK government  legislating in devolved areas,

    to deliver change, faster.

On tobacco, renters rights, public railways, children’s protection and more.

Too many people are keen to suggest this reset is “over” at the first sign of political disagreement.

    It doesn’t work like that.

    These are different governments,

Led by different political parties with different priorities and policies.

But just because we don’t agree on everything,

doesn’t mean we can’t agree on anything.

I am certain that the single most important outcome which Scotland’s two governments should seek,

    is economic growth.

    Growth with a purpose.

to raise living standards, improve public services,

and tackle the unacceptable levels of poverty that continue to scar our communities.

Scotland can be the engine room of UK growth.

    We have so much potential.

Potential that for too long has gone untapped,

    World class universities,

    advanced manufacturing,

    food and drink,

    life sciences,

    Financial and professional services.

And the government will leave no stone unturned to unleash that potential.

    Tearing up red tape,

harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence to boost productivity,

and delivering a proper industrial strategy, developed in partnership with businesses and trade unions.

But delivering economic growth for Scotland is not something either of Scotland’s governments can do alone.

    It requires partnership and co-operation.

Because the alternative costs us dearly.

If Scottish growth had simply matched the sluggish UK growth in the last decade our economy would be nearly £10 billion larger.

That is why we need a decade of national renewal.

I know the will is there across Scotland’s cities, towns and villages.

I know the will is there in Scotland’s businesses and trade unions.

I know the will is there in Scotland’s third sector and charities.

People up and down the country are full of enthusiasm and ideas for how to make their communities flourish.

I was intrigued to read last week the leader of Glasgow City Council call for a ‘devolution deal’ for the city region.

Not just money but powers too.

This was echoed in a recent meeting with the Edinburgh region growth deal partners,

who are calling for more powers over skills and transport.

Devolution of powers to local communities.

Just look at the impact an empowered Mayor has made to Greater Manchester.

From 2014 to 2022 the Greater Manchester economy grew by almost 50%.

If the Glasgow City Region had achieved that same level of growth,

it would be £7.7 billion larger today.

That’s an awful lot of jobs and opportunities lost.

And we can see the real world impact on the high streets of Scotland’s towns and cities.

As an entrepreneur, it’s painful to see boarded up shops and shuttered restaurants which once represented someone’s dreams and a community’s promise.

That’s something both governments should be coming together to sort out, by empowering local communities with place based growth.

That place based growth is central to our Plan for change.

Money and power needs to be pushed out to communities,

To give them all a fair kick of the ball,

and create their own jobs and investment.

And the single biggest opportunity to create good jobs is ensuring that Scotland wins the race to clean energy.

With GB energy located in Aberdeen, and billions of pounds of investment on the table we need to grasp those opportunities.

Re-skilling and retraining our workforce will be key to delivering a just transition,

ensuring the job opportunities of the future are accessible to all.

And when I think about the future, I think of my daughters.

Zola, aged four years, and Lois just five weeks old.

The jobs and careers they will enjoy have likely yet to even be invented.

(although Zola does want to be a police officer)

Businesses and unions constantly tell me they worry about the skills landscape in Scotland.

The Fraser of Allander Institute found a quarter of employers report vacancies,

with 31% of these being classified as skill-shortage vacancies, up 10 per cent from 2020.

We won’t grab these clean energy jobs for Scotland unless we equip our young people,

and our existing workforce with the skills to do them.

Now we gather today, at the end of Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

Apprenticeships and further education should be at the heart of how we take advantage of the race to clean power.

There are 8,000 fewer college places today than there were just last year.

Those places are at their lowest level in nine years.

Just last week we saw that the attainment gap in Scottish schools between the richest and the poorest kids has widened again.

Everyone deserves the opportunity and dignity that comes with good work.

Yet Scotland’s rate of economic inactivity is above the rest of the UK.

That’s people out of work, and not looking for work for various reasons.

If we simply matched the UK average, we would get over 40,000 people back to work and generate millions more for our economy and communities.

The UK Government’s £240 million Get Britain Working Plan will overhaul Jobcentres so they focus on skills and careers.

We need to see the Scottish Government engage with that plan and help us make it work.

One of the reasons why Scotland’s inactivity rate is higher,

is because more people in Scotland are out of work due to ill health.

Many of those people want to work, but can’t.

And far, far too many of them are stuck on an NHS Scotland waiting list.

As it stands, NHS waiting times are one of the biggest blocks to growing our economy.

Almost 300,000 Scots are out of work and not looking for work because they are either temporary or  long term sick..

Over 700,000 Scots are on an NHS waiting list for treatment.

Cut NHS waiting lists and you will grow our economy.

A record settlement from the UK Government for public services in Scotland should deliver that.

I know that some of the decisions the UK Government took to fund that record settlement have been difficult and won’t please everyone…

but we live in a world where 100,000 Scots have been stuck on an NHS waiting list for more than a year,

28,000 Scots in the past 18 months have been forced to go private for health care.

That is an unacceptable situation and we make no apology delivering the funding our NHS needs.

Scotland has a proud industrial past,

and we can have a bright industrial future, which delivers jobs and wealth for families for generations to come,

but only if we get the race to clean power right.

For too long Scottish workers missed out on the work.

Now I worry a new generation will miss out on the skills.

As my wonderful Scotland Office ministerial colleague and friend, Kirsty McNeill, often says:

“We feel it in our bones.”

It is why we believe in delivering the kind of economic growth that delivers jobs and opportunities for working class people and communities.

And one area where those jobs and opportunities could be created, is nuclear power.

The Scottish Government has a long-standing opposition to nuclear power.

That is their prerogative, but doing so means investment, jobs and opportunities for Scottish communities will continue to head south.

Both Hunterston in North Ayrshire and Torness in East Lothian are prime spots for development.

They have made fantastic contributions to the Scottish economy in the past and they can do so again in the future.

For Hunterston, that could be 800 new jobs with £50-60 million in direct local wages.

For Torness, up to 1,000 jobs with £100m in direct wages.

Together it would mean tens of millions of pounds being paid in business rates.

My message to the Scottish Government today is simple:

stop blocking this investment, allow those jobs to be created, and let that revenue flow into Scotland.

And crucially – please work in partnership with the UK Government to deliver it.

Nuclear power stations aren’t built overnight.

But they are an investment in our future.

And another long term investment, for which our country is crying out, is aviation infrastructure.

Or to put it simply – runways.

I’ll be clear – I support a third runway at Heathrow.

It is a huge opportunity for Scotland’s economy and a massive opportunity for our Brand Scotland agenda,

to sell Scotland to the world.

Most passengers leave Scotland on a plane, not knowing that beneath their seat are crates of Scottish salmon and whisky.

Connectivity to get our world leading goods overseas is critical as an enabler to growth.

But incredibly, Scottish exports as a percentage of GDP lag behind the rest of the UK.

The Scottish Government’s export target is to increase the value of Scotland’s international exports to 25% of GDP by 2029.

But that would still leave us behind the rest of the UK,

and missed opportunities to improve connectivity to our own airports is partly why.

It was the current First Minister himself who cancelled the Glasgow Airport Rail Link, over 16 years ago in 2009.

That was a missed opportunity for growth,

given Glasgow Airport already adds over £1.4 billion to the Scottish economy and supports 30,000 jobs.

It is incredible that in 2025 you can get a direct train from Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport, over 200 miles away.

but not to Glasgow Airport, just a few miles from the centre of Scotland’s largest city.

We need UK and Scottish government cooperation, to ensure that all Scotland’s airports,

including the publicly owned Prestwick Airport,

makes the most of Heathrow expansion, and have a proper strategy to drive economic growth.

The UK industrial strategy identifies eight growth driving sectors, and Scotland can benefit from all of them:

    advanced manufacturing, clean energy industries

    creative industries, digital and technologies

    financial services, life sciences

    professional and business services

and most relevant this week – defence.

The decision to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP is an act of generational leadership from our Prime Minister.

as we chart a new course in an uncertain world and do what is necessary to defend our country and our continent.

National security is the first duty of any government,

but that increase in spending also represents a massive industrial opportunity for Scotland.

More than £2 billion was spent by the Ministry of Defence in Scotland last year,

the industry in Scotland employs more than 30,000 people, including 1,500 apprentices.

The role must be to defend our nation,

to stand in solidarity with our European partners,

and to help Scottish industry lead the way in defence technology and manufacturing.

On this issue, at this crucial time, we need cooperation between Scotland’s two governments,

and I am determined that it should happen,

    in our national interest.

So on these issues: skills, nuclear, aviation,

    infrastructure, defence, and employability,

I will reconvene the Scottish Business Growth group

co-chaired by me and the Deputy First Minister.

We will bring together voices from across Scottish business, industry,

    trades unions and civic society,

to find a way through these challenges.

It will be Scotland’s Growth Commission.

Last year heralded a new era for the Scotland Office.

    An era of delivery.

An era that will grasp the new golden age of opportunities for Scotland.

The vast majority of Scots want their two governments to work together to increase living standards and improve public services.

Under my leadership, that is what this Scotland Office is determined to do.

Since the election last July, I have completely reformed and restructured the department,

so it can deliver the government’s missions for Scots.

This new direction for the Scotland Office will have four strategic priorities:

    economic growth

    green energy

    Brand Scotland

    and tackling poverty.

This new Scotland Office is the UK Government’s delivery arm for Scotland

    and Scotland’s window to Whitehall.

    We will deliver economic growth.

    But growth with a purpose:

to reduce and one day eradicate the poverty which scars our communities.

Taking advantage of our enormous green energy potential and our world class brand to get there.

So as we enter a third era of the Scotland Office post devolution,

I am reminded of the words of a Scottish Secretary from long before the devolution era, the great Tom Johnston, who wrote:

“…if only we could lift great social crusades like better housing and health from the arena of partisan strife,

what magnificent achievements might yet be ours.

“In unity lies strength: in concurrence, the possibility of great achievement in better housing,

    better health,

better education, better use of leisure,

greater security in income, and employment.”

That is a lesson that the Scottish public have been demanding both their governments learn.

And that lesson is the path to deliver better living standards and ensure that

    plenty more boys and girls

    from communities like Wester Hailes,

    and from all over Scotland,

have the opportunities in life that can lead them to the Cabinet table.

    That is my motivation.

That is my ambition for Scotland.

Thank you for your time this morning.

  • MIL-OSI Global: What Amazon MGM’s creative control over the James Bond film franchise means for the future of 007

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Colin Burnett, Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies, Washington University in St. Louis

Daniel Craig played James Bond in five films from 2006 to 2021. Greg Williams/Eon Productions via Getty Images

James Bond was front and center at the 2025 Academy Awards – and in a somewhat curious way.

In a musical number, Lisa of Blackpink, Doja Cat and Raye sang the Bond theme songs “Live and Let Die,” “Diamonds Are Forever” and “Skyfall,” respectively. No Bond films had been nominated for an award, and none of these singers has a connection to the Bond franchise, though they did all recently collaborate on the single “Born Again.”

The strange exercise felt less like a celebration and more like a big flashing question mark for a screen icon whose future has never felt more uncertain.

Since the shocking news dropped on Feb. 20, 2025, that Jeff Bezos’ Amazon MGM Studios would assume creative control over the James Bond film franchise, commentators and fans have wondered why.

Why would the Broccoli family, which has long held the rights to Bond movies through their company, EON, cede control of the film series to a tech partner they’ve been at odds with?

    Two possibilities have emerged.

First, EON’s Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the stepson and daughter of legendary EON producer Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, may have reached a point of creative exhaustion. There could be something to this theory. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, the 83-year-old Wilson and 64-year-old Broccoli were having difficulty figuring out their next step after 2021’s “No Time to Die.”

A second reason could be Amazon’s impatience with EON. In December 2024, The Wall Street Journal reported that Barbara Broccoli balked when Amazon Studios executive Jennifer Salke proposed several Bond spinoff projects, including a Bond series with a female lead, for Prime Video. Perhaps frustrated with the stalemate, Amazon may have made Wilson and Broccoli an offer they couldn’t refuse to get them out of the way and get production of Bond content rolling.

The speculation is certainly intriguing. But a more central question shouldn’t be overlooked: the “what.”

What, precisely, has Amazon MGM acquired? And what can it actually do with the Bond story?

    Breaking down the Bond rights

In my research on the 007 franchise, I’ve discovered that this property has never been a traditional film series.

Long before “Star Wars” launched in 1976 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched in 2008, Bond relied on a range of mediums to tell its story.

The Bond franchise began in 1953, not with a film but with a novel, Ian Fleming’s “Casino Royale.” One year later, “Casino Royale” was adapted for American TV as a live anthology show. Four years after that, in 1958, a popular Bond comic strip made its debut.

It was only in 1962, with “Dr. No,” starring Sean Connery, that the now-iconic film series began.

Since then, James Bond has been spun off into a children’s animated show, choose-your-own-adventure books, a “Young Bond” novel series, video games, a reality show, radio dramas and more.

Here’s what’s crucial: With its new deal, Amazon MGM has a controlling stake only in the rights that EON holds. EON has licensed the right to produce future films and TV shows from Fleming since 1961. EON secured worldwide merchandising rights in 1964 and production rights to video games in the early 1990s.

Other 007 media – the literary, comic and audio series – are managed by the Fleming Estate and Ian Fleming Publications.

EON produced most of the James Bond films, such as 1969’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.’
    EON/United Artists

The James Bond media franchise is what I call a shared rights and licensing network.

No one company controls all of the Bond rights, and no one company produces all of Bond media. Though this arrangement is a complicated one, the sharing and licensing of rights has allowed Bond to emerge as a lucrative and fecund product line. According to my calculations, it now boasts over 330 original stories in 72 years of media production.

In other words, Bond is much more than the 25 films released by EON.

    James Bond’s many lives

Until now, rights sharing and licensing have ensured that the Bond franchise remains creatively distinct from “Star Wars” and Marvel.

The companies that produce these series – LucasFilm and Marvel Studios – are owned by The Walt Disney Company. With their rights pooled under one corporate entity that also oversees all production, “Star Wars” and Marvel have been able to drive toward high levels of creative consistency and unity among their stories. Across films, TV, comics and video games, “Star Wars” and Marvel aspire to what media specialists call “transmedia storytelling.”

By sharing rights, the Bond franchise has arrived at a very different type of storytelling, one that fragments the story and multiplies the James Bonds to be experienced across distinct media. The effect isn’t transmedia storytelling, or even a Marvel-style multiverse. In Bond, characters can’t cross over to alternate realities and meet other versions of themselves.

James Bond exists in many different worlds and leads many different lives.

The James Bond in Ian Fleming’s novels has a biography that differs from the version of Bond who appears in other media.
    Jim/flickr, CC BY-NC-SA

To name a few: There’s the Bond of Fleming’s 1950s and 1960s novels, who loses his first love, Vesper Lynd, and hunts down her killers, who are members of SMERSH, the assassination arm of Soviet intelligence agencies. Fleming’s Bond also lives on in the novels of Kingsley Amis and John Gardner, which were published in the 1970s and 1980s.

There’s EON’s silver screen Bond, who, from 1962 to 2002, never falls in love with Vesper, but loses his wife, Tracy di Vicenzo, to the crime syndicate SPECTRE and remains scarred by the loss. And in the modern era, there’s the Bond who appears in author Samantha Weinberg’s “Moneypenny Diaries.” Published from 2005 to 2008, the series depicts a version of Bond who has retired to a small Scottish isle with his lover, MI6’s Miss Moneypenny.

The effect of Bond’s shared structure is what I dub “threaded storytelling.” The novels present various versions of Bond’s life, at different points in history. The film series creates two of its own. The comic series offers yet more lives of 007.

Each version of Bond runs alongside the others in the market, focusing on a Bond character who exists only within his unique story world. This gives fans an unpredictable, ever-expanding canon of stories to follow and even compare, like one grand spot-the-difference game in time.

    Where next for Bond?

The deal between Amazon MGM and EON awaits regulatory approval in the U.S. and U.K.

If it goes through, Amazon MGM will have a strong property on its hands. Over the decades, EON has reinforced certain elements to the character and the story: James Bond is a debonair hitman. MI6 chief M gives him high-stakes missions. MI6 armorer Q fits him with the latest gadgets. And Bond lives large, enjoying beautiful women, fine dining, Savile Row fashions and Omega timepieces.

Amazon MGM is unlikely to tinker with these Bondian elements. They’re also likely to preserve the movies’ “Bond formula” – the gun barrel visual that kicks off each film, elaborately designed credit sequences, film-specific theme songs, and the closing title card that reads, “James Bond Will Return.”

Yet some fans fear that Amazon MGM will develop “woke” storylines. Others foresee the product being diluted with countless streaming spinoff series.

To me, the more intriguing possibility is whether Amazon will try to create a more unified Bond universe, akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, the Fleming Estate will continue to manage the novels, comics and radio. But with creative control over EON’s rights, Amazon MGM could, in theory, develop an elaborate transmedia strategy never before explored in this franchise.

A relaunched film series, perhaps serving as Amazon MGM’s “mothership,” would feed into satellite series in video games and streaming shows. These games and shows, in turn, would tie into and expand the universe of the films.

Were that to happen, the Bond franchise would truly enter a new phase and risk losing much of the creative flexibility it’s possessed in the past.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Exhausted by the news? Here are 6 strategies to stay informed without getting overwhelmed − or misled by misinformation

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Seth Ashley, Professor of Communication and Media, Boise State University

Not all news sources are created equal. Noah Berger/AP Images

Political spin is nothing new, and identifying reliable news and information can be hard to do during any presidency. But the return of Donald Trump to the White House has reignited debates over truth, accountability and the role of media in a deeply divided America.

Misinformation is an umbrella term that covers all kinds of false and misleading content, and there is lots of it out there.

During Trump’s chaotic first presidency, the president himself promoted false claims about COVID-19, climate change and the 2020 election.

Now, in his second term, Trump is again using the bully pulpit of the presidency to spread false claims – for example, on Ukraine and Canada as well as immigration, inflation and, still, the 2020 election.

Meanwhile, social media platforms such as Meta have ended fact-checking programs created after Trump’s first election win, and presidential adviser Elon Musk continues to use social media platform X to amplify Trump’s false claims and his own conspiracy theories.

To stay informed while also arming yourself against misinformation, it’s crucial to practice what I call good “news hygiene” by developing strong news literacy skills.

News literacy, as I argue in my open-access 2020 book “News Literacy and Democracy” and in recent research with colleagues, is about more than fact-checking and detecting AI-generated fakes. It’s about understanding how modern media works and how content is influenced, from TikTok “newsfluencers” to FOX News to The New York Times.

Here are six ways to become a smarter, saner news consumer.

    1. Recognize the influence of algorithms

Algorithms are the hidden computer formulas that mediate everything news consumers read, watch, click on and react to online. Despite the illusion of neutrality, algorithms shape people’s perceptions of reality and are designed to maximize engagement.

Algorithmic recommendation engines that power everything from X to YouTube can even contribute to a slow-burn destabilization of American society by shoving consumers into partisan echo chambers that increase polarization and erode social trust.

Sometimes, algorithms can feed falsehoods that warp people’s perceptions or tell them to engage in dangerous behavior. Facebook groups spreading “Stop the Steal” messages contributed to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. TikTok algorithms had people drinking laundry detergent in the “borax challenge.” Dylann Roof killed nine Black people based on falsehoods from hate groups he found in search results.

Rather than passively consuming whatever appears in your feeds – allowing brain rot to set in – actively seek out a variety of sources to inform you about current events. The news shouldn’t just tell you what you want to hear.

And spread the word. People who simply understand that algorithms filter information are more likely to take steps to combat misinformation.

    2. Understand the economics of corporate news

Media outlets operate within economic systems that shape their priorities.

For-profit newsrooms, which produce the bulk of news consumed in the U.S., rely heavily on advertising revenue, which can reduce the quality of news and create a commercial bias. Places such as ABC, CNN and FOX, as well as local network TV affiliates, can still do good work, but their business model helps to explain sensational horse-race election coverage and false-balance reporting that leaves room for doubt on established facts about climate change and vaccines.

At the same time, the economic outlook for news is not good. Declining revenues and staff cuts also reduce the quality of news.

Nonprofit newsrooms and public media provide alternatives that generally prioritize public interest over profit. And if you have the budget, paying for quality journalism with a subscription can help credible outlets survive.

Traditional journalism has never been perfect, but the collapse of the news business is unquestionably bad for democracy. Countries with better funding for public media tend to have stronger democracies, and compared with other rich nations, the U.S. spends almost nothing on public service broadcasting.

    3. Focus on source evaluation and verification

Particularly with AI-generated content on the rise, source evaluation and verification are essential skills. Here are some ways to identify trustworthy journalism:

    • Quality of evidence: Are claims verified with support from a variety of informed individuals and perspectives?

    • Transparency about sources: Is the reporter clear about where their information came from and who shared it?

    • Adherence to ethical guidelines: Does the outlet follow the basic journalistic principles of accuracy and independence?

    • Corrections: Does the outlet correct its errors and follow up on incomplete reporting?

Be cautious with content that lacks the author’s name, relies heavily on anonymous sources – or uses no sources at all – or is published by outlets with a clear ideological agenda. These aren’t immediate disqualifiers – some credible news magazines such as The Economist have no bylines, for example, and some sources legitimately need anonymity for protection – but watch out for news operations that routinely engage in these practices and obscure their motive for doing so.

A good online verification practice is called “lateral reading.” That’s when you open new browser tabs to verify claims you see on news sites and social media. Ask: Is anyone else covering this, and have they reached similar conclusions?

    4. Examine your emotional reactions

One of the hallmarks of misinformation is its ability to provoke strong emotional responses, whether outrage, fear or validation.

These reactions, research shows, can cloud judgment and make people more susceptible to false or misleading information. The primitive brains of humans are wired to reject information that challenges our beliefs and to accept information we like, a phenomenon known as confirmation bias.

When encountering content that sparks an emotional reaction, ask yourself: Who benefits from this narrative? What evidence supports it? Is this information informative or manipulative?

If the answers make you suspicious, investigate further before acting or sharing.

    5. Guard against propaganda

Everyone in politics works to shape narratives in order to gain support for their agenda. It’s called spin.

But Trump goes further, spreading documented lies to pump up his followers and undermine the legitimacy of basic democratic institutions.

He also targets media he doesn’t like. From discrediting critical outlets as “fake news” or calling journalists the “enemy of the people,” these tactics silence dissent, undermine public trust in journalism and alter perceptions around acceptable public discourse and behavior.

Meanwhile, he amplifies information and people who support his political causes. This is called propaganda.

Understanding the mechanics of propaganda – its use of repetition, emotional appeal, scapegoating, scare tactics and unrealistic promises – can help inoculate people against its influence.

    6. Stay engaged

Democracy relies on an informed and active citizenry to hold accountable their government and the officials who work in it as well as other powerful players in society. Yet the sheer volume of misinformation and bad news these days can feel overwhelming.

Rather than tuning out – what scholars call “news avoidance” – you can practice critical consumption of news.

Read deeply, look beyond headlines and short video clips, question the framing of stories, and encourage discussions about the role of media in society. Share reliable information with your friends and colleagues, and model good news hygiene for others.

Correcting misinformation is notoriously hard, so if someone you know shares it, start a dialogue by asking – privately and gently – where they heard it and whether they think it’s really true.

Finally, set goals for your consumption. What are your information needs at any given moment, and where can you meet that need? Some experts say 30 minutes a day is enough. Don’t waste your time on garbage.

    Touch grass

While it’s important to stay engaged, so is getting outside and connecting with nature to calm and soothe your busy brain. Logging off and connecting with people in real life will keep your support system strong for when things are tough. Protect your mental health by turning off notifications and taking breaks from your phone.

Practicing good news hygiene isn’t just about protecting ourselves – it’s about fostering a media environment that supports democracy and informed participation.

Drug abuse and drug situation in Hong Kong in 2024 (with photos)
    ****************************************************************

The Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) noted at its meeting today (March 7) the figures of the Central Registry of Drug Abuse (CRDA) and other drug-related figures for 2024. ACAN noticed that the total number of reported drug abusers in 2024 was lower than that in 2023.           Figures from the CRDA revealed that the total number of reported drug abusers in 2024 decreased by 9 per cent (from 5 540 to 5 068) compared with that in 2023. The three most common types of drugs abused in 2024 were heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine (commonly known as “Ice”). Nevertheless, the number of reported young drug abusers aged under 21 in 2024 increased by 8 per cent (from 664 to 720), of which 226 vaped the “space oil drug”. In this group, the most common type of drugs abused was cannabis, followed by cocaine and the “space oil drug”. Since the first half of 2024, the “space oil drug” has continued to be the third most common type of drugs abused by this group.           To step up the control of the “space oil drug”, the Government has listed etomidate, the main ingredient of the “space oil drug”, and its three analogues, (metomidate, propoxate and isopropoxate) as dangerous drugs.           A spokesman for the Security Bureau (SB) said, “Etomidate, the main ingredient of the ‘space oil drug’, has been listed as a dangerous drug, which has significantly enhanced deterrence against ‘space oil drug’-related crimes. The move has also facilitated the law enforcement agencies to take more stringent enforcement actions against ‘space oil drug’-related crimes.”           Recently, Hong Kong Customs arrested a 20-year-old man who carried a vape stick containing the suspected “space oil drug”. In addition, the Police have arrested an 18-year-old man, a 16-year-old male and a 16-year-old female on suspicion of “outraging public decency”. Police later seized “space oil drug” electronic cigarette cartridges suspected to contain etomidate from the residences of two of the arrested persons. The Police arrested the three persons on suspicion of “possession of dangerous drugs” and other offences.           The Chairman of ACAN, Dr Donald Li, said, “I am glad to see that the Government has adopted the suggestions from ACAN and promptly listed the main ingredient of the ‘space oil drug’ as a dangerous drug. I suggest that the Government continues to step up anti-drug publicity on all fronts. I also hope that primary and secondary schools can take the initiative to continuously inculcate in their students the proper knowledge and values of resisting drugs.” He added, “The wickedness of the ‘space oil drug’ has been laid bare in recent controversial incidents. Teenagers who have mistaken vaping the ‘space oil drug’ as just a trivial matter should come to realise the drug harm of the ‘space oil drug’ from the cases in which young people have been arrested. I urge everyone to stay away from the ‘space oil drug’.”           The Government’s new TV Announcement in the Public Interest (API), “Don’t fall into ‘space oil drug’ traps!”, has been launched on various television and radio channels. In addition, relevant advertisements and publicity materials have been displayed on public transport networks, large outdoor advertising spaces, cinemas, public housing estates, private housing estates, Community Living Rooms and villages in the New Territories, etc. The advertisements will also be pushed to mobile phone users on popular mobile application websites. Information and videos about the ‘space oil drug’ have been uploaded onto the dedicated webpage of the Narcotics Division (ND) of the SB (www.nd.gov.hk/en/space_oil_drug.html) for reference by the public.           The Anti-“Space Oil Drug” Week has just been co-organised by the ND and the Education Bureau, which was held in all schools in Hong Kong. At the time, teachers and students participated together in a number of interactive activities, which included game booths and interactive drama shows, to enable students to understand the harm of the “space oil drug” and the severity of committing “space oil drug” crimes. Anti-drug education activities in schools will not stop after the Anti-“Space Oil Drug” Week. The Government will continue to spread anti-“space oil drug” messages through different activities in schools, with a view to cultivating proper values among students and building a stronger anti-drug barrier for them.           As regards drug treatment and rehabilitation services, the Government will continue to foster cross-sectoral collaboration, including the social welfare, healthcare and education sectors, to enhance the awareness and handling capability of social workers, healthcare professionals and teaching staff in relation to the “space oil drug” to facilitate early identification of and assistance to “space oil drug” abusers.           According to statistical figures from law enforcement agencies, the number of persons arrested for drug offences in 2024 dropped by 5 per cent (from 3 407 to 3 243) when compared with 2023. The number of young arrestees aged under 21 decreased by 7 per cent (from 323 to 301). Cannabis, cocaine and “Ice” were the main drugs involved in these arrests. According to court cases concluded for the same period, the conviction rate of persons being prosecuted for drug offences was as high as nearly 90 per cent. As for young offenders aged under 21 who were sentenced to imprisonment for drug trafficking, more than half of them were sentenced to over five years in prison, and the longest period of imprisonment was 22 years.           This year marks ACAN’s 60th anniversary. ACAN and the ND are taking the opportunity to co-organise a series of commemorative events, including an interactive roving exhibition in education institutions and the community, community engagement activities and competitions, with a view to consolidating anti-drug awareness in the community. In addition, the roving exhibition features a theme zone dedicated to the 60th anniversary of ACAN, where a number of precious historical posters, photos, anti-drug videos and TV APIs are displayed. The roving exhibition is divided into different theme zones with interactive games and digital exhibition panels etc. By incorporating the old and the new, visitors will be able to learn from the past and have a better understanding of the harm caused by drugs. The next stop of the roving exhibition will take place at City University of Hong Kong from March 11 to 14. For more details of the roving exhibition, please visit the dedicated webpage on the ND’s website (www.nd.gov.hk/en/ACAN60A_exhibition.html).           The statistical figures of the CRDA for 2024 are available on the ND website (www.nd.gov.hk/en/crda_main_charts_and_tables.html). The ND’s website (www.nd.gov.hk) as well as its official accounts (narcotics.divisionhk) on Facebook and Instagram also contain detailed information about drugs including the “space oil drug” for the public’s reference.

Mini Spartans excited to promote recycling message in St Patrick’s Day parade debut

    7 March 2025

City of Derry Spartans’ legion of underage runners are set to highlight the circular recycling message of reusing, recycling and repairing items when they take part in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival parade through the city centre.
The youngsters will be wearing costumes made from old running t shirts from the Strabane Lifford and Waterside Half Marathons when they join hundreds of performers and tens of thousands of spectators at the spectacle on March 17th.

The Flowers, Fur and Feathers themed parade, co-ordinated by the North West Carnival Initiative, will leave Bishop Street Carpark at 3pm.

The Spartans, an institution of Derry sport who celebrated their 50th anniversary last year, have always had junior runners in their ranks and formally set-up a primary school age section, the Mini Spartans, 15 years ago.

There are over 100 underage runners registered with the club and many of them will take part in their first appearance in the parade which is part of packed programme of events in and around the city centre to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

“We are delighted to get the opportunity to take part in the parade and the youngsters can’t wait for it,” said Karen Farry from the City of Derry Spartans.
“It’s a great chance for us to showcase our club at such a large scale event and highlight that we cater for runners of all levels and ages.
“The mini Spartans have had great success as a team this season and they are excited to be able to celebrate this and St Patrick’s Day on March 17th.”
“We want to thank the North West Carnival Initiative and the Council for the opportunity to get involved.”
Last year’s Waterside Half Marathon and Strabane Lifford Half Marathon attracted a combined field of over 3,000 participants who secured the coveted commemorative t shirts and medals by taking part.
The shirts are designed to be hard wearing and to dry easily so runners can reuse them on multiple occasions.
Event organisers Derry City and Strabane District Council had a small surplus of shirts after the event from runners who were unable to take part and the North West Carnival Initiative’s talented dress making team have used them to create costumes that will be unveiled by the Spartans on March 17th.
“The Waterside Half Marathon and Strabane Lifford Half Marathons are events that all our underage runners would aspire to race in when they are older so we are delighted to be wearing the upcycled T shirts,” Karen added.
“Our club members love the T shirts from athletics events in the city and no matter what event or training session you attend there’s nearly always someone wearing a t shirt from the Half Marathons in Derry and Strabane.
“Hopefully it will help highlight to runners that the t shirts aren’t just for race day and encourage people to recycle or reuse any event t shirts they have lying around the house that aren’t being used.”

The 2025 St Patrick’s Day parade route will begin at Bishop Street and passes through The Diamond, Shipquay Street, Whitaker Street, Foyle Embankment, Harbour Square Roundabout and down the Strand Road to Strand Road carpark.

The parade will feature hundreds of flamboyant performers from local dance groups, sports clubs and community organisations and will be the centrepiece of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s comprehensive programme of music, dance, food and folklore for its 2025 Spring Carnival celebrations.

The full programme for the 2025 Spring Carnival celebrations for Derry and Strabane can be accessed now at derrystrabane.com/springcarnival.

Centre and States/UTs Deliberate at Chintan Shivir to Strategize for 2028 Olympics and Strengthen India’s Bid for 2036 Olympics

Talent Identification, Impact of Khelo India, Infrastructure Development and Corporate Partnerships among Key Discussions on Day 1

Posted On: 07 MAR 2025 5:32PM by PIB Delhi

Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, chaired a two-day Chintan Shivir focused on India’s preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and strengthening the country’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics at Kanha Shanti Vanam in Telangana today. The Shivir brought together sports ministers from various States/UTs, senior sports administrators, key government officials, and domain experts to exchange ideas and craft a roadmap for India’s emergence as a global sports powerhouse.

    — Dr Mansukh Mandaviya (@mansukhmandviya) March 7, 2025

Dr. Mandaviya emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned India hosting the 2036 Olympics and urged states to actively contribute to making this ambition a reality. “Chintan Shivir is an initiative guided by the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of good governance. This forum allows us to collaborate and take forward our dream of hosting the Olympics,” he stated.

The Chintan Shivir facilitated dialogue on critical areas such as talent identification, coaching methodologies, sports infrastructure, and sustainable development of sports. Representatives from multiple States/UTs, including Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Haryana, Bihar, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, shared their best practices, with Dr. Mandaviya stressing the importance of learning from each other to accelerate progress.

Highlighting India’s vision for becoming a global sporting powerhouse, Dr. Mandaviya stated, “Making India a Viksit Bharat by 2047 requires a well-structured and collaborative approach towards sports. While sports is a State subject, a unified effort is essential to position India as a formidable sporting nation.”

A key area of discussion was the impact of the Khelo India initiative in identifying and nurturing young athletes. Dr. Mandaviya noted that over 2,800 Khelo India academies have been established, and 937 out of 1,045 Khelo India Centres are currently operational. He emphasized the importance of creating a national athlete repository with unique IDs to track talent and ensure their growth within the system.

“We cannot afford to let talent slip through the cracks. A scientific approach in talent identification and management, along with active participation from National Sports Federations is crucial for the Olympic mission,” he added.

Dr. Mandaviya also underlined the need to strengthen grassroots sports by identifying young athletes between the ages of 9-14 and nurturing them for long-term Olympic preparation. He announced that new initiatives under Khelo India, such as beach games, water sports, and indigenous games, will be introduced to encourage regional participation and enhance India’s sports culture.

Sports governance was another key theme of the discussions. Delegates underscored the need for enhanced transparency in National Sports Federations to ensure fair selection processes and build confidence among parents to encourage their children to take up sports as a career. The deliberations focused on improving coordination among all stakeholders to foster an athlete-centric governance model.

Infrastructure development was also a major focus, with an emphasis on optimizing the utilization of sports infrastructure of States, PSUs, Ministries, and the private sector. The discussions highlighted the need for a sustainable model where stadiums and existing infrastructure are used efficiently. It was also discussed to establish District-Level Sports Schools (DLSSs) by upgrading existing schools to increase grassroots-level talent scouting and training.

During the day, participants engaged in a meditation session led by Padma Bhushan Daaji, fostering mindfulness and focus. In the evening, a vibrant cultural program was organized, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage through traditional music, dance, and artistic performances, celebrating the nation’s diversity and spirit.

“Sarpanch Pati” Culture Under Spotlight in New Digital Campaign

New Episode of the Panchayat Web series  “Asli Pradhan Kaun?” showcases exemplary Leadership skills of Elected Woman Gram Pradhan

Posted On: 07 MAR 2025 2:01PM by PIB Delhi

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) has launched a pioneering campaign to eliminate proxy representation and promote genuine women leadership at the grassroots level. As part of this initiative, MoPR has collaborated with The Viral Fever (TVF) for the production of a series of  compelling digital content that addresses critical issues affecting local rural governance. Created within the universe of the widely acclaimed web-series Panchayat, this production by TVF features renowned actors like Neena Gupta, Chandan Roy, and Faisal Malik.

The first of these productions, “Asli Pradhan Kaun?” premiered on 4th March, 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Ministry’s “Sashakt Panchayat Netri Abhiyan” (सशक्त पंचायत-नेत्री अभियान). The film was screened at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi before an audience of over 1,200 elected women representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions from across the country.

The film ‘Asli Pradhan Kaun?’, illustrates how effectively a woman Gram Pradhan exercises her powers for  public welfare. “Asli Pradhan Kaun?”  addresses the issue of ‘Sarpanch Pati’ culture – where male family members unofficially represent elected women leaders – a practice that undermines the constitutional mandate of women representation in Panchayati Raj Institutions. Speaking about her role, acclaimed actor Neena Gupta said, “It’s always a pleasure to be part of stories that have a purpose. Asli Pradhan Kaun? is not just another production – it is a reflection of real-life challenges faced by women in rural India. I am excited for audiences to see how beautifully this message has been conveyed through storytelling”.

This initiative comes in the wake of the recent Report on “Transforming Women’s Representation and Roles in Panchayati Raj Systems and Institutions: Eliminating Efforts for Proxy Participation”, which has gained wider attention and gathered momentum in favour of the Ministry’s consistent efforts to strengthen genuine women leadership in local governance. As part of its comprehensive approach, the Ministry will release two additional productions focusing on:

    1. Digital Intervention and Transparency – Showcasing how technology can transform rural governance
    2. Own Source Revenue – Highlighting the importance of financial independence / self-reliance for Panchayats

Also featuring actors Durgesh Kumar and Bullu Kumar, these upcoming releases will further advance the Ministry’s mission to create impactful change at the grassroots level. The year-long “Sashakt Panchayat Netri Abhiyan” is designed to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of Women Elected Representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions across the country. It will focus on building skills and confidence of women elected to Panchayati Raj positions, ensuring they can exercise their constitutional rights and responsibilities effectively.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: English rendering of PM’s address at Republic Plenary Summit 2025

    Source: Government of India

Posted On: 06 MAR 2025 11:07PM by PIB Delhi

    Namaskar!

You all must be tired, your ears must be tired of Arnab’s loud voice, sit down Arnab, it is not the election season yet. First of all, I congratulate Republic TV for this innovative experiment. You people have brought the youth here by involving them at the grassroots level, by organizing such a big competition. When the youth of the country get involved in the national discourse, there is novelty in thoughts, it fills the entire environment with a new energy and we are feeling this energy here at this time. In a way, with the involvement of youth, we are able to break every bond, go beyond limits, yet there is no goal that cannot be achieved. There is no destination that cannot be reached. Republic TV has worked on a new concept for this summit. I congratulate all of you for the success of this summit, I greet you. Well, I also have a little selfishness in this, one, for the last few days I have been thinking that I have to bring one lakh youth into politics and that one lakh are such who are first timers in their families, so in a way, such events are preparing the ground for this aim of mine. Secondly, there is my personal benefit, the personal benefit is that those who will go to vote in 2029 do not know what the headlines of newspapers used to be before 2014, they do not know, there used to be scams of 10-10, 12-12 lakh crores, they do not know and when they will go to vote in 2029, there will be nothing before them for comparison and therefore, I have to pass that test and I have full faith that this ground which is being created will make that work strong.

    Friends,

Today the whole world is saying that, it is the century of India, you haven’t heard this.  India’s achievements, India’s successes have raised a new hope in the whole world. The India about which it was said that it will sink itself and take us down with it, that India is today driving the growth of the world. What is the direction of India’s future, we come to know this from our work and achievements today. Even 65 years after independence, India was the world’s eleventh largest economy. In the last decade, we have become the world’s fifth largest economy, and now we are going to become the world’s third largest economy at the same speed.

    Friends,

Let me also remind you of what happened 18 years ago. The reason for this figure being 18 years is special because those who have turned 18, who are becoming voters for the first time, do not know about the period before 18 years, that is why I have taken that figure. 18 years ago, i.e., in 2007, India’s annual GDP reached one trillion dollars. In simple words, this was the time when economic activity in India was worth one trillion dollars in a year. Now look at what is happening today? Now almost one trillion dollars’ worth of economic activity is happening in a single quarter. What does this mean? The amount of economic activity that was happening in India in a year 18 years ago is now happening in just three months. This shows how fast today’s India is progressing. I will give you some examples, which show how big changes have come in the last decade and how the results have come. In the last 10 years, we have succeeded in bringing 25 crore people out of poverty. This number is more than the total population of many countries. You can also remember the time when the government itself accepted, the Prime Minister himself said that if one rupee was sent, only 15 paise reached to the poor, who used to eat up that 85 paise and then there is today’s era. In the last decade, more than 42 lakh crore rupees have been transferred to the accounts of the poor through DBT, Direct Benefit Transfer, DBT. If you do the calculation of 15 paise out of a rupee, then what will be the calculation of 42 lakh crore? Friends, today when one rupee goes out from Delhi, 100 paise reaches the last place.

    Friends,

10 years ago, India was nowhere in the world in terms of solar energy. But today India is among the top-5 countries in the world in terms of solar energy capacity. We have increased the solar energy capacity by 30 times. Solar module manufacturing has also increased by 30 times. 10 years ago, we used to import even Holi pichkaris and children’s toys from abroad. Today our toy exports have tripled. Till 10 years ago, we used to import even rifles for our army from abroad and in the last 10 years, our defence exports have increased 20 times.

    Friends,

In these 10 years, we have become the world’s second largest steel producer, the world’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer and the world’s third largest startup ecosystem. In these 10 years, we have increased our capital expenditure on infrastructure five times. The number of airports in the country has doubled. In these ten years, the number of operational AIIMS in the country has tripled. And in these 10 years, the number of medical colleges and medical seats has also almost doubled.

    Friends,

The temperament of today’s India is different. Today’s India thinks big, sets big targets and today’s India shows great results. And this is happening because the thinking of the country has changed, India is moving ahead with big aspirations. Earlier our thinking was like, it’s okay, it happens, let it be, whatever happens, let it be, whoever has to do something will do it, do your own thing. Earlier the thinking had become so narrow, I will give you an example of it. There was a time, if there was a drought somewhere, if it was a drought-affected area, then people used to give memorandums when Congress was in power, so what did the villagers demand, that sir, famines keep happening, so at this time during famine, relief work should start, we will dig pits, take out the soil, fill it in other pits, this is what people used to demand, someone would say what did he demand, that sir, please get a hand pump installed in my area, they used to demand a hand pump for water, sometimes what did the MPs demand, give him a gas cylinder a little early, MPs used to do this work, they used to get 25 coupons and the Member of Parliament used those 25 coupons to oblige for gas cylinders in his entire area. One MP 25 cylinders in a year and all this was happening till 2014. MPs used to demand that Sir, this train that is going, please give it a stoppage in my area, a stoppage was being demanded.

I am saying all these things which were happening before 2014, not very old. Congress had crushed the aspirations of the people of the country. That is why the people of the country had even stopped having hope, they had accepted that nothing will happen from them, what are they doing. People used to say that brother, okay, if you can do only this much, then do only this much. And today you see, how fast the situation and thinking are changing. Now people know who can work, who can bring results, and this is not the common citizen, if you listen to the speeches in the House, then the opposition also gives the same speech, why is Modi ji not doing this, it means they think that this is what will do.

    Friends,

The aspiration that we have today is reflected in their words. The way of speaking has changed. What do people demand now? Earlier people used to ask for stoppages, now they come and say, start a Vande Bharat train at my place too. I had gone to Kuwait some time back, so when I normally go out to the labour camp there, I try to go to my countrymen wherever they work. So, when I went to the labour colony there, I was talking to our labourer brothers and sisters who work in Kuwait, some have been working there for 10 years, some for 15 years. Now see, a labourer from a village in Bihar has been working in Kuwait for 9 years and comes here once in a while. When I was talking to him, he said, Sir, I want to ask a question. I said, please ask. He said, Sir, please build an international airport near my village at the district headquarters. I was so glad that a labourer from my country’s village in Bihar who has been working in Kuwait for 9 years also thinks that now an international airport will be built in his district. This is the aspiration of a common citizen of India today, which is driving the whole country towards the goal of developed India.

    Friends,

The strength of any society or nation increases only when restrictions are removed from its citizens, obstacles are removed, walls of hindrances fall. Only then the strength of the citizens of that country increases, even the height of the sky becomes small for them. Therefore, we are constantly removing the barriers that previous governments had put before the citizens. Now I give an example of the space sector. Earlier, everything in the space sector was the responsibility of ISRO. ISRO certainly did a great job, but the remaining potential in the country regarding space science and entrepreneurship was not being utilized, everything was confined to ISRO. We courageously opened the space sector for young innovators. And when I made the decision, it did not make the headline of any newspaper, because there is no understanding either. Republic TV viewers will be happy to know that today more than 250 space startups have been formed in the country, this is the wonder of the youth of my country. These startups are today making rockets like Vikram-S and Agnibaan. The same happened in the sector of mapping, there were so many restrictions, you could not make an atlas, technology has changed. Earlier, if you had to make a map in India, you had to make rounds of government offices for years. We removed this restriction as well. Today, data related to geo-spatial mapping is paving the way for new startups.

    Friends,

Nuclear energy, the sector related to nuclear energy was also kept under government control earlier. There were restrictions, constraints, walls were erected. Now in this year’s budget, the government has announced to open it for the private sector. And this has strengthened the path to add 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.

    Friends,

You will be surprised to know that there is an untapped economic potential of Rs 100 lakh crore, even more than that, lying in our villages. I am repeating this figure before you again – Rs 100 lakh crore, this is not a small figure, this economic potential is present in the form of houses in the villages. Let me explain it to you in a simpler way. Now here in a city like Delhi, if your house is worth 50 lakhs, one crore, 2 crores, you also get a bank loan on the value of your property. If you have a house in Delhi, then you can take a loan of crores of rupees from the bank. Now the question is, houses are not only in Delhi, there are houses in villages too, there are owners of houses there too, why does it not happen there? Loans are not available on houses in villages because in India there were no legal documents for houses in villages, proper mapping could not be done. Therefore, the country and its citizens could not get the proper benefit of this power of the villages. And it is not just India’s problem, people in the big countries of the world do not have property rights. Big international organizations say that the country which gives property rights to its people, its GDP increases.

    Friends,

To give property rights to the houses in villages in India we have started a Swamitva scheme. For this, we are conducting drone surveys in every village and mapping every house in the village. Today, property cards of village houses are being given to people across the country. The government has distributed more than two crore property cards and this work is going on continuously. Earlier, due to the absence of property cards, there were many disputes in the villages, people had to go to courts, all this has ended now. Now the villagers are getting loans from banks on these property cards, due to this the villagers are starting their own business, doing self-employment. Just the other day I was talking to the beneficiaries of this Swamitva Yojana on video conference. I met a sister from Rajasthan. She said that after getting my property card, I took a loan of Rs. 9 lakhs in the village and said that I started a business and I have repaid half the loan and now it will not take me much time to repay the entire loan and there is a possibility of getting more loans, what a confidence level.

    Friends,

The biggest beneficiary of all the examples I have given is the youth of my country. The youth, who are the biggest stakeholders of developed India. The youth, who are the X-Factor of today’s India. This X means Experimentation Excellence and Expansion, Experimentation, that is, our youth have moved beyond the old ways and created new paths. Excellence means that the youth have set global benchmarks. And expansion means that innovation has been scaled up by our youth for 140 crore countrymen. Our youth can provide solutions to the country’s major problems, but this capability has not been utilized properly earlier. Earlier governments did not even think that youth can also provide solutions to the country’s problems through hackathons. Today we organize the Smart India Hackathon every year. So far 10 lakh youth have become a part of it. Many ministries and departments of the government have put forward many problems related to governance before them, told them to tell us what could be the solution. In the hackathon, our youth have developed about two and a half thousand solutions and given them to the country. I am happy that you have also taken this culture of hackathon forward. And I congratulate the youth who have won and I am happy that I got a chance to meet those young people.

    Friends,

In the last 10 years, the country has experienced a new age of governance. In the last decade, we have transformed the impact less administration into impactful Governance. When you go to the field, people often say that they have received the benefit of a particular government scheme for the first time. It is not that those government schemes did not exist earlier. Schemes existed earlier as well, but last mile delivery at this level is being ensured for the first time. You often conduct interviews of beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Earlier, houses for the poor were sanctioned on paper. Today, we build houses for the poor on the ground. Earlier, the entire process of building a house was government driven. The type of house to be built, what materials would be used, was decided by the government. We have made it owner driven. The government puts money in the beneficiary’s account, the beneficiary himself decides what kind of house will be built. And we also held a country-wide competition for house design, put forward models of houses, involved people for designing, and decided things with public participation. Due to this, the quality of houses has also improved and houses are also getting completed at a faster speed. Earlier, half-constructed houses were built by joining bricks and stones, we have built the house of the poor’s dreams. These houses have tap water, gas connection under the Ujjwala scheme, electricity connection under the Saubhagya scheme, we have not just built four walls, we have built life in those houses.

     Friends,

National security is a very important aspect for the development of any country. In the last decade, we have worked a lot on security. You remember, earlier, breaking news of serial bomb blasts used to be shown on TV, there used to be special programmes on the network of sleeper cells. Today, all this has disappeared from both the TV screen and the Indian soil. Otherwise, earlier when you used to travel by train or go to the airport, you used to get warnings like, if there is an unclaimed bag lying there, do not touch it, today these 18-20 year old young people may not have heard that news. Today, Naxalism is also counting its last breaths in the country. Earlier, more than a hundred districts were in the grip of Naxalism, but today it is limited to less than two dozen districts. This was possible only when we worked with the spirit of nation first. We brought governance to the grassroot level in these areas. Within no time, thousands of kilometers long roads were built in these districts, schools and hospitals were built, 4G mobile network reached and the country is seeing the results today.

    Friends,

Today, Naxalism is being cleared from the jungles due to the decisive decisions of the government, but now it is spreading its roots in the urban centers. Urban Naxals have spread their network so fast that the political parties which were opposed to urban Naxals, whose ideology was once inspired by Gandhiji and which was connected to the roots of India, today Naxals have made inroads in such political parties. Today, the voice of Urban Naxals and their own language is heard there. From this, we can understand how deep their roots are. We have to remember that Urban Naxals are staunch opponents of both India’s development and our heritage. By the way, Arnab has also taken up the responsibility of exposing Urban Naxals. Development is necessary for a developed India and strengthening the heritage is also necessary. And that is why we have to be cautious of Urban Naxals.

    Friends,

Today’s India is touching new heights while facing every challenge. I am confident that all of you at Republic TV Network will always give a new dimension to journalism with the spirit of Nation First. With this belief that you should continue to catalyze the aspiration of a developed India through your journalism, I thank you very much and wish you all the best. Thank you!
