    The Prime Minister spoke to His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia earlier this afternoon.

    The Prime Minister spoke to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman this afternoon. 

    They discussed the gravely concerning situation in the Middle East and agreed on the need to de-escalate.

    The Prime Minister updated on his conversations with partners so far and reiterated that the UK is poised to work closely with its allies in the coming days to support a diplomatic resolution.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets German Foreign Minister

    Doha, June 14

    HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani met on Saturday with HE Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Johann Wadephul, who is visiting the country.

    During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them, in addition to discussing the latest developments in the region, particularly the Israeli attack on the territory of the sisterly Islamic Republic of Iran.

    In this context, HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated the State of Qatar’s strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli attack on Iranian territory, considering it a flagrant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security, and a clear breach of the rules and principles of international law.

    His Excellency also stressed the need for concerted regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and resolve disputes through diplomatic means, affirming that the State of Qatar is making strenuous efforts, along with its partners, for all parties to return to the path of dialogue to address outstanding issues and consolidate security and peace in the region and the world.

    “I would like to send sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who has tragically lost his life in this incident. My thoughts are also with all the other people who have been affected by this very serious fire. 

    “I wish to praise the significant immediate response from all the First Responders and especially our brave firefighters who hurried towards this major fire and put their lives at risk to rescue occupants from the building and tackle the blaze. National resources have been deployed including a dedicated height appliance which has been central to our brave firefighters’ efforts.  

    “Following the evacuation of all flats in the affected building and neighbouring properties in the early hours of Saturday, a rest centre was set up at the Salutation Hotel. Staff from our Housing Service, Perth and Kinross Health and Social Care Partnership and our social work teams have been in attendance at the hotel since the incident to give any support and practical help that we can. 

    “Importantly, we are working to make sure that everyone who has been displaced has suitable alternative accommodation in place. People have also been given food, hot drinks, clothes, replacement medication, nappies, baby milk, pay-as-you-go phones, toiletries, toys and help with their pets. 

    “A large-scale Red Cross team also attended this afternoon to provide further support for anyone that needed it, backing up the Council and HSCP effort through the night and day. 

    “I would like to thank everyone who has helped in the effort to support the householders, including our staff, volunteers and staff at the Salutation Hotel, and we will continue to do all we can to support people affected by the fire. What has been heartening to see at this sad time was the immediate practical support donated by local businesses and charities, from clothing to food and toiletries, and even a brand-new pram for one of the youngest children affected by this incident. 

    “Finally, I would also like to thank the people of Perth and local businesses for their patience and understanding as some unavoidable disruption continues in the city centre.”  

    Following the fire at Scott Street, Perth city centre roads will continue to be affected on Sunday 15th June.  

    Emergency services will remain on scene, and Scott Street and South Street will stay closed to traffic and pedestrians. 

    Detours and signage have been put in place around Perth city centre to provide guidance for drivers. Motorists and pedestrians should continue to avoid the area if possible.  

    Perth and Kinross Council will also continue to provide a range of support for people affected by the fire.

    ULAN BATOR, June 14 (Xinhua) — The international peacekeeping exercise “Searching for Khaan-2025” kicked off in Mongolia on Saturday at the training center of the Mongolian Armed Forces, 60 km from the capital Ulan Bator.

    At the opening ceremony, Deputy Chairman of the State Great Khural (parliament) of Mongolia Bukhchuluuny Purevdorj noted that the exercises serve as an important bridge for deepening international cooperation in peacekeeping operations and strengthening mutual trust and understanding between countries.

    “The scale, inclusiveness, content and programme of these multinational peacekeeping exercises continue to expand year on year, reflecting a commitment to tangible actions that contribute to global peace and security,” he added.

    A total of 1,200 peacekeepers from 24 countries, including Mongolia, China, Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Japan and the United States, are taking part in 22 peacekeeping exercises organized by the Mongolian Armed Forces.

    The exercise, which will last until June 28, will cover command and staff and field activities.

    The exercises “In Search of Khaan” have been conducted since 2003 by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Mongolia jointly with the US Pacific Fleet Command and the UN Peace Support Fund. Since 2006, the peacekeeping maneuvers have evolved into large-scale international peacekeeping exercises. –0–

    Flying high over Buckingham Palace, the Royal Air Force had the pleasure of parading a selection of RAF aircraft to celebrate the Official Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III. 

    At 13:00 twenty-nine aircraft took to the skies above the crowds on The Mall and over Buckingham Palace, watched over by Their Majesties’ The King and Queen, alongside other members of the Royal family.  

    The stunning formation was led by four Chinook helicopters from No 18 & 27 Squadrons of RAF Odiham, following the King’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour). 

    The aircraft came from nine different RAF stations, many of whom flew in the VE80 celebrations in May this year.

    Other aircraft in the formation included a Phenom, Typhoon, an F35 and a C17 Globemaster.  

    The flypast is also thought to be the first time anywhere in the world that a national aerobatic squadron has switched to both a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend for propulsion and a renewable biofuel – known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). This is a premium quality fuel, with a chemical structure almost identical to the regular diesel traditionally used by the aerobatic team for its vapour trails.

    In addition to reducing its carbon footprint, the move demonstrates the RAF’s commitment to new technology as well as becoming more energy secure and less reliant on fossil fuels.

    The aircraft of the Armed Forces have a long and proud history of taking part in this occasion, with the first King’s Birthday Flypast taking place in 1913 and most recently formed part of Their Majesties’ Coronation in 2023 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. 

    The flypast has much poignancy for one of the Chinook pilots, Master Aircrew (MACr) Ruffles. The King’s Birthday Flypast was one of MACr Ruffles’ last flights as he leaves the RAF after forty years’ service and nine thousand hours flying with helicopters.

  • MIL-OSI China: China launches satellite for natural disaster monitoring

    JIUQUAN, June 14 — China launched an electromagnetic monitoring satellite on Saturday, which is expected to enhance the country’s “space-air-ground” integrated monitoring capabilities for major natural disasters.

    A Long March-2D carrier rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 3:56 p.m. (Beijing Time), successfully sending the Zhangheng 1-02 satellite into its planned orbit, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

    The CNSA said that this marks a significant step forward for China in the field of space-based observation of the Earth’s physical fields.

    Named after the ancient Chinese inventor Zhang Heng, who created the world’s first seismoscope over 1,800 years ago, the satellite was jointly developed by China and Italy. It is the first operational satellite dedicated to exploring the Earth’s physical fields under China’s medium and long-term civil space infrastructure development plan, according to the CNSA.

    With a designed lifespan of six years, the satellite is equipped with nine payloads, including an electric field detector co-developed by China and Italy, as well as a high-energy particle detector developed by Italy.

    It will carry out quasi-real-time monitoring of global electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic waves, the ionosphere and the neutral atmosphere, detecting electromagnetic anomalies caused by geological and human activities, as well as monitoring thunderstorm and lightning activity, according to CNSA.

    “Scientists will use these data to study the correlation between changes in the Earth’s physical fields and geological activities, and to support research on the prediction of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, extreme weather, and space weather disasters,” said Peng Wei, deputy director of the system engineering department of the CNSA.

    The satellite will significantly enhance China’s early perception, risk assessment, and monitoring and early warning capabilities for major natural disasters, Peng added.

    It will also provide data support for emergency management, resource mapping, and communications and navigation industries, while fostering scientific and technological cooperation in related fields among countries and regions along the Belt and Road.

    The Zhangheng 1-01 satellite, launched in 2018, remains in normal operation, while the new satellite has richer physical measurements. Working in tandem, the two satellites will conduct collaborative observations, effectively improving the horizontal spatial and temporal resolution of observations, according to Peng.

    China and Italy have further deepened practical cooperation in satellite payload development, data sharing, and scientific research, said Peng.

    “The successful launch of this satellite marks another milestone in Sino-Italian aerospace collaboration, demonstrating closer scientific cooperation and exchanges between the two sides. It will also contribute to the well-being of the human community with a shared future,” he added.

    Francesco Longo, deputy director of engineering and technology of the Italian Space Agency, called the mission an important milestone. “We have a lot of expectations on the results that we acquire from this important Chinese-Italian mission.”

    He noted that, like China, Italy is a beautiful yet fragile country, prone to volcanoes, earthquakes and other events that can affect people’s lives. This mission, he said, will contribute to protecting and improving lives impacted by natural disasters.

    Longo also noted that adding this new satellite to the first, and eventually building a constellation, will double observation time, significantly boosting scientific prospects.

    The Italian team named the project Limadou, the pinyin transliteration of the Chinese name for the 16th-century Italian priest Matteo Ricci, in honor of his pivotal contributions to cultural exchanges between the East and the West.

    Both Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci served as bridges between Italian and Chinese cultures, and space, too, has the potential to unite all countries, Longo said.

    Saturday’s launch marked the 581st mission of China’s Long March rocket series.

    Edinburgh’s Lord Provost has congratulated all those named in the King’s Birthday Honours list, including former Council employee Frank Donoghue.

    Frank received the British Empire Medal in recognition of his services to the public, following 44 years working in the Council.

    He was leading the facilities team at the City Chambers when he retired in September, and played a role in Operation Unicorn after the Queen’s Death in 2022.

    Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said:

    Congratulations to all those who have been recognised in this year’s King’s Honours, whose achievements and service to the public have made such an impact.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Hope Rowe convicted of murdering woman at child’s birthday party

    A woman has been convicted of murder after stabbing a woman at a child’s birthday party, following a Metropolitan Police investigation.

    The jury also found her partner guilty of perverting the course of justice.

    Hope Rowe, 33 (30.12.1991), of Piazza Walk, Aldgate, attacked Charlotte Lawlor, 31, with a knife at a property in Stepney Green on Sunday, 15 September, 2024. The stabbing was witnessed by some of Ms Lawlor’s family, children and guests at the party.

    On Friday, 13 June, 2025, a jury at Inner London Crown Court found Rowe guilty of murder. Witness testimony and phone evidence – including an incriminating voicemail – were used by Met Police investigators to bring the defendant to justice. She was convicted in the absence of a murder weapon.

    Detective Sergeant Dean Musgrove, from the Met Police’s Specialist Crime North unit, said: “Hope Rowe launched a brutal attack on Charlotte Lawlor at what should have been a joyous occasion. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends, who will have to contend not only with the loss of a loved one, but with the trauma of having witnessed the killing.

    “As if the killing was not senseless enough, Rowe then tried to deceive investigators, disposing of the knife before turning herself in. It still has not been found to this day, and both Rowe and her partner were incriminated by a voicemail accidentally recorded on Rowe’s phone.”

    In a statement, the victim’s parents said: “We are happy with the verdict. We would like to thank the jury for their attention during the trial.

    “The family will never get over the loss and murder of Charlotte. It has destroyed us, leaving a gaping hole. Charlotte’s son, Riley, has been left without a mum, and siblings without their older sister and best friend.

    “Charlotte brought light to everyone’s life.”

    Leigh Holder, 38 (15.11.1986), of Piazza Walk, Aldgate, was also convicted of perverting the course of justice. Holder encouraged Rowe not to surrender to the police, and helped her dispose of the murder weapon.

    Just after 01:00hrs on Sunday, 15 September, Met officers attended a property in Duckett Street, Stepney Green, following reports of a serious assault. Charlotte Lawlor – who had been attending a birthday party at the property the previous evening – had been stabbed, and was being assisted by friends and family.

    After administering first aid, police were joined by a London Ambulance Service crew, but, despite the efforts of paramedics, Ms Lawlor was pronounced dead within an hour.

    Having spoken to witnesses at the property, officers established that Ms Lawlor had been stabbed by Hope Rowe following an argument at the party, who then drove away from the scene with her partner, Leigh Holder.

    Around 02:10hrs, Holder’s vehicle was stopped by armed police in Tower Hamlets. He told them that Rowe had jumped out of the vehicle shortly after leaving the crime scene, and claimed he had no knowledge of her location. Holder was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    At 07:00hrs, Rowe attended Bethnal Green Police Station, where she was arrested on suspicion of murder. At interview, she provided no comment – and she later claimed in court that her actions were due to a momentary loss of control.

    Rowe’s phone was seized and analysed by forensic experts. A voicemail – accidentally left by Holder on Rowe’s phone while he was sitting next to her and driving away from the scene – was recovered. In the recorded conversation, Rowe told Holder that it was “good” she had killed Ms Lawlor, while Holder instructed his partner to dispose of the knife and to avoid the police.

    In addition to witness evidence from those present at the scene of the murder, the voicemail proved vital in implicating both Rowe and Holder in their crimes.

    Rowe and Holder will be sentenced an Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, 9 July.

    US-based Axiom Space is now set to send Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 19, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Saturday.

    Shukla’s flight, originally scheduled for June 11, was postponed multiple times due to technical observations related to the ISS’s Zvezda module. A leak had been detected in the propulsion bay during a pre-launch test.

    ISRO noted that Axiom Space is working closely with NASA to assess the pressure anomaly in the Zvezda Service Module onboard the ISS.

    “During a follow-on coordination meeting between ISRO, Axiom Space, and SpaceX, it was confirmed that the liquid oxygen leak observed in the Falcon 9 launch vehicle has been successfully resolved,” ISRO said in a statement.

    “Axiom Space is now targeting June 19, 2025, for the launch of the Ax-04 mission,” it added.

    ISRO has reiterated its commitment to mission safety and continued coordination with international partners.

    The mission holds historic significance for India. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to become the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS and only the second Indian in space, following Rakesh Sharma’s flight in 1984.

    Shukla will serve as the pilot of the mission, alongside Commander Peggy Whitson of the United States. The other crew members include Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary, both serving as mission specialists.

    Once aboard the ISS, Shukla will conduct pioneering experiments related to food and space nutrition. These experiments, developed in collaboration between ISRO and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), with support from NASA, aim to advance understanding of sustainable life-support systems—crucial for future long-duration space missions.

    The research will also examine the effects of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae—nutrient-rich, high-potential food sources for space missions.

    The experiments will evaluate key growth parameters and analyze transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic changes in various algal species in space, compared to their behavior on Earth.

    The chief executive of one of Britain’s most popular high-street bakeries, the founder of an iconic ceramics brand, and the head of the UK’s largest professional body for recruiters are included in the King’s Birthday Honours today. 

    The UK is home to many iconic brands, and a number of top entrepreneurs and pioneers have been rightly recognised for their outstanding achievements across a variety of sectors, from hospitality to arts and crafts. 

    Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie has been made a CBE for her services to hospitality, while the head of leading high-street brand Pets at Home has been awarded an OBE for services to retail. 

    Neil Carberry, the chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, has received an OBE for his services to the economy and to business, while Craig Beaumont has received an OBE for his work on the Federation of Small Businesses.

    Capitalising on Scottish innovation, ideas and expertise.

    New initiatives taking advantage of Scotland’s world-class reputation as an innovation nation have been announced by the Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes.

    Three projects, backed by £4.4 million, are designed to help turn ground-breaking research across the country’s universities and colleges into high-growth businesses that create jobs and support economic growth.

    The package includes:

    • £2.9 million for the Proof of Concept Fund which will explore the commercial potential of research projects by developing prototypes and pitching to investors, as well as analysing markets to attract further investment 
    • £800,000 for the Spinout Pipeline Project which, led by the University of Strathclyde, will help share commercialisation expertise across Scottish universities, culminating in a summit where innovators will pitch to potential investors
    • £700,000 for the Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint which will help college students to develop business skills and link in with investors

    A further £141,000, spent over two years, will support a new course at the University of Aberdeen to train 40 high school computing teachers, better preparing future generations for careers in tech-based businesses.

    Scaling businesses account for the majority of net job creation in the UK and their annual turnover is around £1.2 trillion, highlighting the opportunity afforded to Scotland’s economy by investing in the drive to turn research findings into high-growth start-ups.

    Since 2011, Scottish universities have helped to produce 240 spin-outs.

    This includes Neuranics, a 2021 joint spinout from University of Edinburgh and Glasgow, which has developed state-of-the-art sensors used across a variety of sectors, including in healthcare and gaming, and has raised $8 million to accelerate its growth. The company is also backed by an £800,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise. 

    Another, Microplate Dx, is a multiple award-winning spinout from Strathclyde, developing novel solutions to the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Sunderland’s Former Senior Coroner awarded OBE in King’s Birthday Honours

    Sunderland’s former Senior Coroner Derek Winter has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

    He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for public service after serving for 21 years as Senior Coroner for Sunderland.

    Mr Winter also served as a Deputy Chief Coroner of England and Wales from 2019 for five years until his retirement from both positions in 2024.

    As Senior Sunderland Coroner, Mr Winter oversaw thousands of investigations into violent, sudden or suspicious deaths, during his time in the role.

    Welcoming the honour, Mr Winter, said: “I am delighted with such an award not just for myself but for my family, my team and the City.”

    Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, Patrick Melia, said: “I’m delighted to hear that Derek Winter has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

    “As Senior Coroner for Sunderland, Derek provided an exemplary service to the city and the people of Sunderland during his 21 years in the role.

    Detectives have released an image of a man they wish to speak to following an attempted rape in Finchley on Wednesday, 11 June.

    A woman in her 30s reported that a man seriously sexually assaulted her at a cinema in South Hampstead at around 15:45hrs. She is currently being supported by specialist officers.

    The man, pictured, is believed to have left the venue following the incident – walking towards Swiss Cottage.

    The man is described as in his 50s, approximately 5ft 6”, with a slim build. He has dark hair on the sides of his head and was captured on CCTV wearing a North Face coat and glasses following the alleged offence on Wednesday, 11 June.

    The investigation team are looking to hear from anyone who believes they saw – or know – this man. Those with information should contact 101, quoting investigation reference 5365/11JUN.

  • PM Modi to visit Cyprus, Canada and Croatia in key multinational tour

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a three-nation tour from June 15 to 19, covering Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. The high-profile visit aims to deepen India’s bilateral ties and broaden strategic engagement with the European Union, the Mediterranean region, and G-7 partners.

    In the first leg of his tour, Prime Minister Modi will visit Cyprus from June 15 to 16 at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. This marks the first visit by the Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. 

    During his stay in Nicosia, PM Modi will hold official talks with President Christodoulides and later address a gathering of business leaders in Limassol. The visit is expected to reaffirm the shared commitment between India and Cyprus to bolster bilateral cooperation and expand India’s presence in the Mediterranean region.

    Following his engagements in Cyprus, the PM will travel to Canada on June 16–17 to attend the G-7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. Invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, this will be PM Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the summit. 

    At the G-7, he is scheduled to engage in discussions with leaders from G-7 nations, invited outreach partners, and heads of key international organisations. Several bilateral meetings are also planned on the sidelines of the summit.

    The final leg of the Prime Minister’s tour will take him to Croatia on June 18, at the invitation of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. This marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia and is expected to be a milestone in bilateral relations. 

    PM Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Plenković and meet Croatian President Zoran Milanović. The visit is aimed at enhancing India’s partnership with European Union nations and strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Croatia.

    Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong attended Viva Technology 2025 in Paris, France, on Friday where he toured the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion and gave a keynote speech at a seminar and networking reception.

    In his keynote speech, Prof Sun said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has been introducing agile policies, building world-class infrastructure and facilitating global I&T collaboration.

    In addition to noting that the flagship research and development (R&D) initiative, InnoHK, fosters global R&D collaboration, he underscored that Hong Kong is also carrying out meticulous planning for building an artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, such as the Hong Kong AI Research & Development Institute to be established.

    UK celebrates Welsh recipients in The King’s Birthday Honours List

    Over 70 people from Wales who have contributed to their community and country are celebrated in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List 2025.

    1215 recipients in total have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a particular focus this year on those who have given their time to public service. 

    This year’s recipients include dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people.

    Recipients from Wales make up 6% of the total number of recipients receiving honours this year. 

    Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

    This year’s Birthday Honours List is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and service that exists in every corner of our country.

    From community champions to cultural icons, each recipient reflects the very best of Britain. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them all.

    Notable recipients across Wales include: 

    Oliver Sykes, who receives an MBE for services to Access to the Arts for Underprivileged Young People. His work leading the Stories for Care programme has empowered over 5000 young people from low income backgrounds, and given them access to literary works not normally available to them.

    Muriel Morgan, who receives an MBE for services to the community in Wrexham. At the age of 88 years old she has only recently retired from her 50 year career in the Royal Voluntary Service. During her time in RVS she coordinated volunteer drivers to take elderly and vulnerable people to medical appointments they might not otherwise be able to make. She worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure the service was maintained and that even in one of the most challenging times for the service, their service users were still able to attend critical medical appointments.

    Modupeola Obilanade is awarded an MBE for services to the community in Newport. Her work leading the St Pauls Clinic has transformed the clinic into a beacon of hope in the community, during her time running the clinic, she has launched multiple community health initiatives focusing on preventative care and chronic pain management. In her spare time she continues to work for charities, providing free medical consultations and health advice to those most in need.

  • MIL-OSI China: Liverpool agrees possible UK record fee for Florian Wirtz

    Liverpool has agreed a fee of 100 million pounds (136 million US dollars) for Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz, which could become a British record fee as the deal also includes a further 16 million pounds in possible add-ons.

    If the conditions, which are dependent on Liverpool winning titles during Wirtz’s time at the club, are met, that would make him more expensive that Chelsea midfielder, Moises Caicedo, who could cost a total of 115 million pounds from Brighton, while Chelsea also paid Benfica 107 million for Enzo Fernandez.

    Liverpool has held off competition to sign Wirtz, with Manchester City’s initial interest cooling at the high-cost of the deal and Wirtz reportedly preferring to move to England than sign for Bayern Munich.

    22-year-old Wirtz still has to agree personal terms and pass the club medical, but neither are expected to be a problem and the move is expected to be completed next week,

    He will move to the Premier League after scoring 57 goals in 197 appearances and seven times in 31 games for Germany.

    Last season he scored 10 goals and gave 12 assists in 31 league appearances, as Bayer finished second in the Bundesliga, while he netted six times in nine Champions League matches.

    Wirtz will be the second player to swap Bayer for Liverpool this summer after right back Jeremie Frimpong moved to Anfield for 34 million pounds to replace Trent Alexander Arnold after Alexander Arnold’s move to Real Madrid.

    Liverpool is also thought to be interested in Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez as the club looks to strengthen the squad that won last season’s Premier League title. Enditem

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Derby City Council’s Andy Smith awarded CBE in King’s Birthday Honours

    Derby City Council is delighted to announce that Andy Smith, Strategic Director for People Services, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours list.

    The honour has been awarded in recognition of Andy’s services to disadvantaged and vulnerable children. A qualified social worker, Andy joined Derby City Council in 2014 as the Director for Early Help and Children’s Safeguarding, following nearly two decades of dedicated service in various roles in Leicester.

    Andy’s profound dedication to social work was rooted in his personal journey. As a former child in care who was adopted by his foster carers just before his 11th birthday, Andy knew he wanted to be a social worker from an early age and has always tried to use his previous lived and positive experiences of the care system and of social workers throughout his career. His unique perspective and unwavering commitment have made him an invaluable asset to Derby City Council and the people of Derby.

    Andy said:

    I am truly humbled to receive this honour. This recognition is not just for me, but for all my colleagues who work tirelessly to make a real difference in the lives of our children every single day. Every child deserves the best start in life, and I’m proud to have played a part in striving towards that goal.

    Andy’s commitment to improving children’s services has also extended nationally. He previously chaired the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) Performance and Inspection Committee for two years, before being appointed Vice President of the ADCS in April 2023 and then President the following year. During his time as President, Andy made important strides in promoting a more inclusive and diverse Association and called on the newly elected Government to ensure children’s neds, rights and outcomes were prioritised.

    His extensive career has also included serving as a local authority associate inspector with Ofsted from 2010 to 2017, providing him with invaluable insight into inspection frameworks.

  • ‘Yoga Connect’ global summit begins in Delhi with over 1,000 participants

    In the lead-up to the International Day of Yoga (IDY), the Ministry of Ayush is hosting the high-profile global summit ‘Yoga Connect’ at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Saturday. The event brings together wellness leaders and yoga experts from across the world to exchange ideas, research, and innovations in holistic health.

    Organised in a hybrid format, the event aims to bring together influential voices from the world of yoga and holistic wellness to share ideas, research, and innovations.

    The summit, coordinated by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), has attracted participation from internationally renowned yoga masters and wellness leaders.

    Prominent figures such as Dr H.R. Nagendra, Bikkhu Sanghasena, Bharath Bhushan, Baba Ramdev, and Acharya Balakrishna are expected to share their insights during the sessions.

    According to the Ministry of Ayush, more than 1,000 participants are attending the event in person, while a large virtual audience is joining from across the globe.

    Delegates include yoga practitioners, researchers, health professionals, policymakers, business leaders, and wellness advocates from countries including the US, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Bahrain, among others.

    The summit is part of a series of build-up events leading to the International Day of Yoga on June 21, which will feature over one lakh coordinated yoga sessions across India and abroad. These events, based on a common yoga protocol, will take place simultaneously from 6:30 AM to 7:40 AM, highlighting the 2025 theme: ‘One Earth, One Health.’

    Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav announced that the main International Day of Yoga celebration this year will be hosted in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the event.

    Over 65,000 organisations across India have registered to participate in this nationwide wellness movement, now recognised as one of the largest global health initiatives.

    Representatives from around 40 countries are expected to attend the Visakhapatnam event, underlining the growing international stature of the Yoga Day celebrations.

    In the national capital, Delhi will mark the day with yoga events at 111 iconic locations, including the Red Fort, Kartavya Path, and Lodhi Garden.

    Since being officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, the International Day of Yoga has evolved into a global celebration of India’s ancient tradition that promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

  • MIL-OSI China: Pilot programs to see speedy rollouts

    China will expedite pilot programs to further open up its services sector in key areas such as cloud computing, biotechnology and wholly foreign-owned hospitals, as part of broader efforts to create a more favorable environment for foreign investment, said a senior commerce official on Friday.

    Li Yongjie, deputy China international trade representative at the Ministry of Commerce, said the ministry will work with relevant government branches to gradually expand opening-up in more service areas and revise China’s Catalog of Encouraged Industries for Foreign Investment.

    Speaking at a news conference in Beijing, Li said the updated catalog will include more opportunities in strategic emerging sectors.

    The government is studying new policy measures to encourage reinvestment by foreign companies and will ensure that foreign-invested firms can participate on an equal footing in government procurement, as well as in nationwide programs such as large-scale equipment upgrades and the trade-in of consumer goods initiative, she added.

    To encourage more global businesses to invest in China, the sixth Qingdao Multinationals Summit will be convened from June 18 to 20 in Qingdao, East China’s Shandong province. A total of 557 guests, including executives of multinational corporations, heads of international organizations and government officials, will attend the event.

    In addition to traditional markets such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United States, Germany and France, this year’s summit has seen increased participation from emerging markets, including member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and countries from the Middle East and Africa, said Wang Lei, director of Shandong’s provincial department of commerce.

    “For the first time, companies from nine countries, such as Vietnam and Egypt, will attend the event,” she said.

    A delegation of 35 representatives from 22 multinational companies based in the Middle East will also participate in the summit, seeking new cooperation opportunities in areas such as fund investment, new energy, modern agriculture and seawater desalination, Wang said.

    Gao Lingyun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, said global firms see China as a key pillar in their long-term growth strategies amid growing geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

    An increasing number of global companies are recalibrating their strategies to capitalize on new opportunities driven by China’s consumption upgrade, digital transformation and green development efforts, said Gao.

    That sentiment aligns with the latest data.

    China’s actual use of foreign direct investment in high-tech industries reached 96.71 billion yuan ($13.47 billion) in the first four months of 2025, data from the Ministry of Commerce showed.

    In the meantime, FDI in e-commerce services surged 137 percent year-on-year, while investment in aerospace equipment manufacturing rose 86.2 percent on a yearly basis.

    Malaysia’s state-owned energy group Petronas said it will further expand its presence in the country, as it views China as a key strategic market in its global growth plans.

    Shamsairi Ibrahim, vice-president of Petronas’ LNG marketing and trading, gas and maritime business, said Petronas will accelerate the expansion of its global liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio to support China’s growing energy needs, as the nation deepens efforts to shift toward cleaner fuels and strengthen energy security.

    Ibrahim said that Petronas will also advance marine LNG solutions such as bunkering services and the expansion of its LNG fleet.

    Four of Petronas’ new LNG carriers are now being built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, a major shipyard based in Shanghai, he added.

    Xu Daquan, president of China unit at German industrial conglomerate Bosch Group, said China is becoming a major innovation hub for Bosch and many of its latest innovations will enter mass production in China this year.

    “The innovation and experience we gain here will not only serve the Chinese market, but also be applied to other countries as demand evolves,” he said.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: UNESCO and VELUX FOUNDATION Launch Global Initiative to Boost Climate Resilience in Marine Protected Areas

    Nice, France – Thursday, 13 June 2025 – As global leaders gather in Nice for the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), UNESCO is proud to unveil a bold new initiative to strengthen the resilience of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the face of accelerating climate change.

    MPAs are the cornerstone of ocean conservation, protecting biodiversity, supporting coastal and indigenous communities, and managing the sustainable use of vital ecosystems. With over 18,000 MPAs established worldwide, how these areas plan for, and adapt, to climate change will be central to the future health of our ocean.

    Launched jointly by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and the World Heritage Centre, and generously funded by the VELUX FOUNDATION, this new project will develop urgently needed guidance for assessing climate vulnerability and help MPAs define priorities for adaptation and resilience.

    The initiative will deliver a standardized, open-access climate vulnerability assessment tool – available in English and French – designed for global use across the MPA network. The project supports the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including the goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.

    “Sustainable ocean planning must be grounded in the best available science. This project is a powerful example of how we can accelerate the uptake of science in decision-making. A thriving ocean is essential for the future of our planet —and that starts with equipping marine protected areas to adapt to a rapidly changing climate.”

    UNESCO marine World Heritage sites are uniquely positioned to pioneer new approaches in ocean conservation. The initiative will pilot in two such sites, the Banc d’Arguin National Park in Mauritania and Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland, Denmark. Insights from these locations will guide broader application across MPAs worldwide, advancing more resilient and science-informed ocean management.

    “UNESCO marine World Heritage sites are flagships of ocean conservation. This initiative will strengthen their resilience to climate change by integrating science, traditional knowledge, and the engagement of local communities”

    By connecting local communities, scientists, and conservation leaders, the initiative aims to transform how MPAs plan for the future—turning knowledge into action and building a more resilient ocean for generations to come.

    “Coastal areas face urgent climate adaptation challenges and restoring the ocean’s balance is essential for ecosystems to withstand climate change. This project expects to provide innovative tools and guidance to support action across all marine protected areas, not just UNESCO sites.” 

    This global initiative represents a critical investment in the future of our ocean. By equipping MPAs with practical tools, scientific insight, and local engagement, it lays the groundwork for a more sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient approach to ocean conservation—benefiting both people and planet.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: 13 June 2025 Departmental update Spain strengthens global health leadership with increased support to WHO

    The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the World Health Organization (WHO) today signed a new agreement and contribution of €5.25 million to support key WHO initiatives on universal health coverage, environmental health and emergency medical response.

    “Spain has long been a strong and steadfast partner to WHO and global health,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We thank Spain for its increased flexible funding of our work, in doing so helping WHO be stronger and more independent and allowing us to deliver the services that countries and communities need from us.”

    This year, Spain’s commitment to global health entered a new chapter as it returned to the WHO Executive Board for the 2025–2028 term, nearly two decades since its last membership. This renewed engagement is supported by the country’s new Global Health Strategy, launched on 27 May 2025.

    This is underscored by today’s signing of a new agreement between Spain, and WHO and a growing collaboration between both partners. At the heart of this effort is the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), under the leadership of Mr Antón Leis; AECID has significantly stepped up flexible and strategic funding for WHO activities.

    AECID’s €5.25 million contribution to WHO is part of a broader €60 million pledge announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in November 2024. Spain’s multi-year commitment also includes support for critical health programmes in countries such as Jordan, Mali, and Sudan, and global initiatives like polio eradication, patient safety, and the elimination of cervical cancer.

    Looking forward, Spain will host the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Seville, 30 June–3 July 2025, where it aims to elevate health financing as a core development priority. A high-level special event – co-sponsored by WHO and featuring leaders from global health, finance, and academia – will call for bold action through the “Health financing for a safe and sustainable economy: towards Seville health financing agenda for action.”

    Nice, France, The UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) concluded yesterday with significant progress made towards the ratification of the High Seas Treaty and a strong statement on a new plastics treaty signed by 95 governments. Once ratified, the Treaty will be the only legal tool that can create protected areas in international waters, making it fundamental to protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. To date 50 countries, plus the European Union, have now ratified the Treaty. 
    New Zealand has signed but is yet to ratify.
    Deep sea mining rose up the agenda in the conference debates, demonstrating the urgency of opposing this industry. The expectation from civil society and a large group of states, including both co-hosts of UNOC, was that governments would make progress towards stopping deep sea mining in Nice.
    UN Secretary General Guterres said the deep sea should not become the wild west. French President Macron said a deep sea mining moratorium is an international necessity. Four new countries pledged their support for a moratorium at UNOC bringing the total to 37. Attention now turns to what actions governments will take in July to stop this industry from starting.

    Washington, D.C. (June 13, 2025) — In response to the Department of the Interior’s announcement yesterday of the publication of a Request for Information and Interest to explore the potential for seabed mineral leasing offshore American Samoa, Arlo Hemphill, Greenpeace USA’s Deep Sea Mining Campaign Lead, said: “Greenpeace USA is deeply disappointed that the Department of Interior is considering seabed mineral leasing near American Samoa — a U.S.territory that has placed a moratorium on the industry in its waters. This move disregards the sovereignty and voices of Pacific communities and opens the door to an industry that threatens their environment, culture, and livelihoods. 

    “The Pacific is not a sacrifice zone. Its people should not be forced to host a destructive industry they’ve clearly rejected. We urge the American public to stand in solidarity with those communities and send a resounding message during the public comment period: the deep sea is not for sale.” 

    This announcement follows President Trump’s executive order advancing deep sea mining in both U.S. and international waters — a move widely condemned by environmental organizations, Pacific Indigenous leaders, and other nations, including France, China, and the European Commission. Deep sea mining company, Impossible Metals, submitted a request to commence a leasing process for the exploration and potential mining of critical minerals in the deep sea off the coast of American Samoa in April. 

    Deep sea mining poses irreversible threats to biodiversity, imperils fragile ecosystems, and could have unforeseen impacts on the ocean’s carbon cycle, potentially impacting the climate crisis.

    Despite U.S. backpedaling, momentum for ocean protection continues to grow. As of the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, which concluded today in Nice, 37 countries have now publicly supported a moratorium on deep sea mining. There has also been significant progress toward ratifying the Global Ocean Treaty, a key agreement towards the goal of protecting at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 — a critical threshold scientists say is needed to restore marine health and safeguard biodiversity.

    To meet this target, protection must extend across both national and international waters. Countries must not only ratify the Global Ocean Treaty, but also take bold domestic action to ban unsustainable extractive industries, such as deep sea mining, and ensure that local and Indigenous communities are at the center of marine conservation planning and decision-making processes.
