    Euro area net saving increased to €820 billion (6.8% of euro area net disposable income) in the four quarters up to the third quarter of 2024 compared with €804 billion in the four quarters up to the previous quarter. Euro area net non-financial investment was broadly unchanged at €440 billion (3.7% of net disposable income), due to broadly unchanged net investment in all sectors (see Chart 1 and Table 1 in the Annex).

    Euro area net lending to the rest of the world increased to €418 billion (from €405 billion previously) reflecting the increased net saving and broadly unchanged net non-financial investment. Household net lending increased to €581 billion (4.8% of net disposable income) from €561 billion. Net lending of NFCs decreased to €192 billion (1.6% of net disposable income) from €231 billion while that of financial corporations was broadly unchanged at €132 billion (1.1% of net disposable income). General government net borrowing decreased, contributing less negatively (-4.0% of net disposable income, after -4.3% previously) to euro area net lending.

    Households

    Household financial investment increased at a broadly unchanged annual rate of 2.4% in the third quarter of 2024. Among its components, investment in currency and deposits (2.6%, after 2.3%) and investment in shares and other equity (1.3%, after 0.8%) grew at higher rates – the latter due to investment fund shares – while investment in debt securities increased at a lower rate (15.4%, after 28.4%).

    Households continued to purchase, in net terms, mainly debt securities issued by general government and MFIs. Households were overall net sellers of listed shares, selling predominantly listed shares of non-financial corporations, while buying listed shares issued by the rest of the world (i.e. shares issued by non-euro area residents). Households increased their purchases of euro area investment fund shares, including those issued by MFIs (money market funds) and by non-money market investment funds, and continued to purchase investment fund shares issued by the rest of the world (see Table 1 below and Table 2.2. in the Annex).

    The household debt-to-income ratio[1] decreased to 82.5% in the third quarter of 2024 from 86.2% in the third quarter of 2023. The household debt-to-GDP ratio declined to 51.8% in the third quarter of 2024 from 53.5% in the third quarter of 2023 (see Chart 2).

    Non-financial corporations

    Financing of NFCs increased at an unchanged annual rate of 1.0% in the third quarter of 2024. Issuance of debt securities grew at a lower rate (2.4% after 2.9%) and financing via trade credits increased at a higher rate (2.4% after 1.8%) while financing via shares and other equity (0.7%) and loans (1.3%) increased at unchanged rates. Loans granted by MFIs to NFCs increased at a broadly unchanged rate (1.2%), and loans granted by other NFCs grew at a lower rate (2.6% after 3.1%). Loans granted by other financial institutions declined at a less negative rate (‑0.2% after -0.6%), as did loans granted by the rest of the world (-1.1% after -2.1) (see Table 2 below and Table 3.2 in the Annex).

    NFCs’ debt-to-GDP ratio (consolidated measure) decreased to 67.4% in the third quarter of 2024, from 69.1% in the third quarter of 2023; the non-consolidated, wider debt measure decreased to 138.4% from 141.3% (see Chart 2).

This release incorporates revisions and completed data for all sectors compared with the first release on “Euro area households and non-financial corporations” of 13 January 2025. Moreover, it incorporates revisions to the data since the first quarter of 1999, reflecting, amongst others, the impact of the benchmark revision 2024 implemented in the EU.     The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 and  Make in Odisha Exhibition in Bhubaneswar, Odisha today. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said this was his second visit to Odisha in the month of January 2025, recalling his visit to inaugurate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 event. Noting that this was the biggest business Summit in Odisha till date, Shri Modi said that there were around 5-6 times more investors participating in Make in Odisha Conclave 2025. He also congratulated the people and the Government of Odisha for organising the grand event.

    “Eastern India is a growth engine in the development of the country and Odisha plays a key role in this”, exclaimed the Prime Minister. He added that historic data also reveals that the contributions of Eastern India were remarkable when India played a major role in global growth. Shri Modi noted that there were huge industrial hubs, ports, trade hubs in Eastern India and Odisha’s participation in this was remarkable. “Odisha used to be an important center in South Eastern Asian trade and the ports were a gateway to India”, said the Prime Minister. He added that Bali Yatra is celebrated even today in Odisha. Recalling the recent visit of the President of Indonesia to India, the Prime Minister said that the President’s words that there were probably traces of Odisha in his DNA.  

    The Prime Minister remarked that Odisha celebrates a legacy which connects it with South East Asia. He added that Odisha had now begun to revive the glorious heritage in the 21st century. He noted that the President of Singapore recently visited Odisha and Singapore was very enthusiastic about its relationship with Odisha. He highlighted that ASEAN countries have also shown interest in strengthening trade and traditional connections with Odisha. The Prime Minister emphasized that numerous opportunities were opening up in this region, more than ever before since independence. He called upon all the investors present, stating that now is the right time to invest in Odisha’s development journey and assured that their investment would lead to new heights of success.

    “India is on a path of development driven by the aspirations of crores of people”, remarked Shri Modi and emphasized that AI stands for both Artificial Intelligence and Aspiration of India, which is the country’s strength. He said that aspirations grow when people’s needs are met, and the past decade has empowered crores of citizens, benefiting the nation. The Prime Minister highlighted that Odisha represents this aspiration. He described Odisha as outstanding, symbolizing the optimism and originality of New India. He added that Odisha had numerous opportunities, and its people have always shown a passion for outperforming. Sharing his personal experience of witnessing the skills, hard work, and honesty of people from Odisha in Gujarat, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that with new opportunities emerging in Odisha, the state will soon reach unprecedented heights of development. He praised Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Manjhi and his team for their efforts in accelerating Odisha’s development. The Prime Minister noted that Odisha is becoming one of India’s leading states in various industries, including food processing, petrochemicals, port-led development, fisheries, IT, edutech, textiles, tourism, mining, and green energy.

    Underscoring that India was rapidly progressing towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy, the Prime Minister said that the milestone of a five trillion-dollar economy was not far away. He added that over the past decade, India’s strength in manufacturing had also become evident. The Prime Minister highlighted that the expansion of India’s economy rests on two major pillars: the innovative service sector and quality products. He emphasized that the country’s rapid progress cannot rely solely on the export of raw materials and therefore, the entire ecosystem was being transformed with a new vision. The Prime Minister mentioned that India was changing the trend of extracting minerals and sending them abroad for product manufacturing and value addition, only to have those products return to India. Similarly, he added that the trend of exporting seafood for processing in other countries was also being changed. Shri Modi stated that the Government was working to ensure that industries related to the resources in Odisha are established within the state. He highlighted that Utkarsh Odisha Conclave 2025 was a means to realize this vision.

    Remarking that the world was increasingly focusing on sustainable lifestyles and moving towards a green future, Shri Modi noted that the potential for green jobs is also growing significantly. He emphasized the need to adapt to the demands and requirements of the times. He highlighted that India was focusing on green technology and a green future, including solar, wind, hydro, and green hydrogen, which will power the energy security of a developed India. The Prime Minister mentioned that Odisha had immense potential in this regard and stated that the country had launched national-level Green Hydrogen and Solar Power Missions. Shri Modi noted that significant policy decisions were being made to promote renewable energy industries in Odisha, and several steps were being taken for hydrogen energy production.

    Prime Minister remarked that alongside green energy, initiatives were being taken to expand the petro and petrochemical sector in Odisha. He highlighted that dedicated industrial parks and investment regions were being developed in Paradip and Gopalpur, indicating significant investment potential in this sector. Shri Modi congratulated the Odisha government for making swift decisions and developing a new ecosystem, considering the potential of different regions in the state.

    “21st century is an era of connected infrastructure and multi-modal connectivity for India”, said Shri Modi and highlighted that the scale and speed at which specialized infrastructure was being developed in India was making the country an excellent investment destination. He noted that dedicated freight corridors were connecting the east and west coastlines, providing faster access to the sea for previously land-locked regions. He mentioned that dozens of industrial cities with plug-and-play facilities were being constructed across the country. Shri Modi emphasized that similar opportunities were being enhanced in Odisha and thousands of crores worth of projects related to railway and highway networks are underway in the state. He added that to reduce logistics costs for industries in Odisha, the Government was connecting ports with industrial clusters and mentioned that both the expansion of existing ports and the construction of new ports are taking place. He stressed that Odisha was set to become one of the top states in the country in terms of the blue economy.

    Urging everyone to recognize the challenges of the global supply chain in a rapidly changing world, the Prime Minister emphasized that India cannot rely on fragmented and import-based supply chains. Instead, a robust supply and value chain must be built within India to minimize the impact of global fluctuations, he added. He highlighted that this responsibility lies with both the government and the industry. Shri Modi called on industries to support MSMEs and young startups, stressing the importance of research and innovation for growth. He added that theGovernment was creating a vibrant research ecosystem in the country, with a special fund and a package for internships and skill development. He encouraged industries to actively participate and collaborate with the Government. Emphasising that a strong research ecosystem and a skilled young workforce will directly benefit the industry, Shri Modi urged industry partners and the Odisha government to work together to build a modern ecosystem aligned with Odisha’s aspirations, providing new opportunities for the youth. This, he said, will create more job opportunities within Odisha, leading to prosperity, strength, and progress for the state.

    The Prime Minister remarked that people around the world were eager to understand and learn about India. He highlighted that Odisha was an excellent destination to understand India, with its thousands of years of heritage and history. He added that the state offers a unique blend of faith, spirituality, forests, mountains, and the sea, all in one place. Shri Modi described Odisha as a model of development and heritage and mentioned that G-20 cultural events were held in Odisha, and the Konark Sun Temple’s wheel was made a part of the main event. He emphasized the need to explore Odisha’s tourism potential, with its 500-kilometer coastline, over 33% forest cover, and endless possibilities for eco-tourism and adventure tourism. Prime Minister noted that India’s focus was on “Wed in India” and “Heal in India,” and Odisha’s natural beauty and environment were very supportive of these initiatives.

    Highlighting that India had significant potential for conference tourism, the Prime Minister said that venues like Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi in Delhi were becoming major centers for this sector. He also mentioned the emerging sector of the concert economy. He noted that India, with its rich heritage of music, dance, and storytelling, and a large pool of young concert-goers, has immense possibilities for the concert economy. He added that over the past decade, the trend and demand for live events have increased. Pointing out the recent Coldplay concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad as evidence of the scope for live concerts in India, Shri Modi emphasized that major global artists were attracted to India, and the concert economy boosts tourism and creates numerous jobs. He urged states and the private sector to focus on the necessary infrastructure and skills for the concert economy. This includes event management, artist grooming, security, and other arrangements, where new opportunities are emerging.

    Shri Modi remarked that next month, India will host the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) for the first time. He highlighted that this significant event will showcase India’s creative power to the world. He emphasized that such events generate revenue and shape perceptions, contributing to the economy’s growth. He noted that Odisha has immense potential for hosting such events.

    “Odisha plays a significant role in building a developed India”, emphasized the Prime Minister. He highlighted that the people of Odisha have resolved to build a prosperous state, and the Union government was providing all possible support to achieve this goal. He expressed his affection for Odisha, noting that he had visited the state nearly 30 times as Prime Minister and has been to most of its districts. He emphasized his trust in Odisha’s potential and its people. Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the investments made by all partners will elevate both their businesses and Odisha’s progress to new heights. He extended his best wishes to everyone involved. 

    The Governor of Odisha, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Manjhi, Union Ministers Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw were present among other dignitaries at the event.

    Background

    Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 is a flagship Global Investment Summit, being hosted by the Government of Odisha, which aims to position the state as the anchor of the Purvodaya vision as well as a leading investment destination and industrial hub in India.

    Prime Minister also inaugurated the Make in Odisha Exhibition that highlights achievements of the state in developing a vibrant industrial ecosystem. The two day conclave will be held from 28th to 29th January. It will serve as a platform for industry leaders, investors, and policymakers to converge and discuss the opportunities Odisha offers as a preferred investment destination. The conclave will host CEOs and Leaders’ Roundtables, Sectoral Sessions, B2B meetings, and Policy Discussions, ensuring targeted engagement with investors across the globe.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: MOIL Celebrates 76th Republic Day with Patriotic Fervor at Balaghat Mine

    Embracing the spirit of unity and patriotism, Manganese Ore (India) Limited celebrated the 76th Republic Day of the nation with immense enthusiasm at its Balaghat mine. The celebrations commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Shri Ajit Kumar Saxena, CMD, MOIL. He was accompanied by Shri Rakesh Tumane, Director (Finance); Shri M.M. Abdulla, Director (Production & Planning); Ms. Rashmi Singh, Director (Commercial), and Smt. Sushma Saxena, w/o Shri Ajit Saxena, as Special Invitee, along with other senior officials.

    The event showcased a grand parade featuring the Guards and school children, with active participation from employees’ families. The highlight of the celebrations was a vibrant cultural program that brought together more than 500 school children and employees performing a captivating array of patriotic and cultural performances.

    Addressing the gathering, Shri Saxena emphasized MOIL’s unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution and the company’s role in contributing to the nation’s progress.

    In recognition of excellence, CMD Shri Saxena accompanied by Mrs. Saxena awarded accolades to the best employees, best security personnel, and the best hospital management team. Winners of various competitions held as part of the celebrations were also felicitated. On this occasion, various new welfare schemes for especially the contract labour working for MOIL were announced.

    As part of the festivities, a friendly cricket match between CMD XI and DF XI was held at the Dongri Buzurg mine, fostering camaraderie and teamwork among MOIL employees. Smt. Sushma Saxena was the Chief Guest in the function and gave away the trophies.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: A current flowing to the future

    Just 25 kilometres northwest of Mostar, another man is on a mission to save his local river. Boro Đolo grew up along the banks of the Lištica River. “Here, people learn to swim before they learn to walk,” he says.

    A soft-spoken grandfather, Đolo spends his free time working with a local organisation to restore the area’s native fish population. Professionally, Đolo has devoted 35 years to the water sector, working for the city of Široki Brijeg. There he leads a project aimed at improving wastewater services to protect the Lištica. The city has already built and rehabilitated 25 kilometres of sewer lines and four kilometres of storm drains and is currently constructing a treatment plant to serve its 15 000 residents.

    Flowing from a nearby spring, the Lištica River, carves through local landscapes before joining the Neretva near Mostar. “That’s why it’s crucial to keep the Lištica clean. We all live downstream,” Đolo says. “If someone upstream pollutes a river, that pollution affects everyone living downstream.”

    The projects in Mostar and Široki Brijeg are part of a larger effort, financed by the European Investment Bank, to improve water and sanitation across the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The €60 million invested in these initiatives is part of the Bank’s broader €240 million commitments to water infrastructure and flood protection in the country.

    “The project covers 19 municipalities and has significantly improved the quality of life for residents,” says Sukavata Bejdić, project lead at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry. Speaking in her crowded office, surrounded by stacks of paperwork, Bejdić maintains an optimistic attitude and an infectious smile. “Over the last 15 years, this project has brought clean drinking water and a better sewerage system to more than 500 000 people.” 

    Bejdić knows she’s making a difference. “It’s been a long process and a lot of hard work,” Bejdić says, “but I talk to people on the ground every day, and I’m happy I can do something for them.”

Oceanographic vessels are a key tool for studying climate change, implementing the European maritime policy strategy and fulfilling obligations under European directives.

    Greece’s two existing research vessels (‘AEGAEO’ and ‘PHILIA’) were built in 1985. The oceanographic vessel ‘AEGAEO’, which has been in service for 40 years and supported European programmes worth hundreds of millions of euro, will soon be decommissioned. Despite the fact that 75 % funding was secured from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in 2018 for the construction of a new modern research vessel, the national contribution (25 % of the total budget) has still not been made available, causing delays that are jeopardising the continuation of Greek maritime research.

    Can the Commission say whether additional European instruments or programmes could be used to help complete the construction of the new Greek research vessel, in order to ensure the continuation of maritime research and the fulfilment of Greece’s European obligations?

Through this new instrument, €300 million will be made available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) working at the forefront of sustainable development.     Euro area net saving increased to €820 billion (6.8% of euro area net disposable income) in the four quarters up to the third quarter of 2024 compared with €804 billion in the four quarters up to the previous quarter. Euro area net non-financial investment was broadly unchanged at €440 billion (3.7% of net disposable income), due to broadly unchanged net investment in all sectors (see Chart 1 and Table 1 in the Annex).

    Euro area net lending to the rest of the world increased to €418 billion (from €405 billion previously) reflecting the increased net saving and broadly unchanged net non-financial investment. Household net lending increased to €581 billion (4.8% of net disposable income) from €561 billion. Net lending of NFCs decreased to €192 billion (1.6% of net disposable income) from €231 billion while that of financial corporations was broadly unchanged at €132 billion (1.1% of net disposable income). General government net borrowing decreased, contributing less negatively (-4.0% of net disposable income, after -4.3% previously) to euro area net lending.

    Households

    Household financial investment increased at a broadly unchanged annual rate of 2.4% in the third quarter of 2024. Among its components, investment in currency and deposits (2.6%, after 2.3%) and investment in shares and other equity (1.3%, after 0.8%) grew at higher rates – the latter due to investment fund shares – while investment in debt securities increased at a lower rate (15.4%, after 28.4%).

    Households continued to purchase, in net terms, mainly debt securities issued by general government and MFIs. Households were overall net sellers of listed shares, selling predominantly listed shares of non-financial corporations, while buying listed shares issued by the rest of the world (i.e. shares issued by non-euro area residents). Households increased their purchases of euro area investment fund shares, including those issued by MFIs (money market funds) and by non-money market investment funds, and continued to purchase investment fund shares issued by the rest of the world (see Table 1 below and Table 2.2. in the Annex).

    The household debt-to-income ratio[1] decreased to 82.5% in the third quarter of 2024 from 86.2% in the third quarter of 2023. The household debt-to-GDP ratio declined to 51.8% in the third quarter of 2024 from 53.5% in the third quarter of 2023 (see Chart 2).

    Non-financial corporations

    Financing of NFCs increased at an unchanged annual rate of 1.0% in the third quarter of 2024. Issuance of debt securities grew at a lower rate (2.4% after 2.9%) and financing via trade credits increased at a higher rate (2.4% after 1.8%) while financing via shares and other equity (0.7%) and loans (1.3%) increased at unchanged rates. Loans granted by MFIs to NFCs increased at a broadly unchanged rate (1.2%), and loans granted by other NFCs grew at a lower rate (2.6% after 3.1%). Loans granted by other financial institutions declined at a less negative rate (‑0.2% after -0.6%), as did loans granted by the rest of the world (-1.1% after -2.1) (see Table 2 below and Table 3.2 in the Annex).

    NFCs’ debt-to-GDP ratio (consolidated measure) decreased to 67.4% in the third quarter of 2024, from 69.1% in the third quarter of 2023; the non-consolidated, wider debt measure decreased to 138.4% from 141.3% (see Chart 2).

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Strategic Investments: How Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) Deals are Transforming Angola’s Oil & Gas Industry

    Since its inception in 2019, Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) has evolved from an industry dialogue platform into the country’s premier forum for deal-signing and partnerships. Now recognized as Angola’s largest oil and gas gathering, the event has facilitated investments across the energy value chain while fostering public-private partnerships and cross-border collaboration.

    The upcoming 2025 edition of AOG, set to be launched at a reception event in Luanda on January 28, aims to continue this trajectory of growth. With an intensified focus on deal-making, the event seeks to connect capital to projects, drive collaboration and catalyze a new era of industry expansion in Angola. Below is an overview of previous deals signed at the last five editions of the AOG conference: 

    AOG 2024: Coordinating Cross-Border Development

    The latest edition of the AOG conference – held in Luanda in 2024 – featured five deals, signed by a suite of private companies and regional governments. Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas signed new terms for the development of Block 14 with the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Ministry of Hydrocarbons; the respective finance ministries of Angola and the DRC signed a cooperation agreement; while Angola’s upstream regulator the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and its Mozambican counterpart the National Petroleum Institute signed a deal for the development of joint projects. Sonangol, Conjuncta, CWP and Gauff signed a green hydrogen deal, while Famar and Angobetumes signed an MoU for fuel storage management.

    AOG 2023: Advancing Industry Cooperation

    A record seven deals were signed during AOG 2023, improving collaboration across the upstream, downstream and knowledge sharing segments. Azule Energy and Sonangol signed a deal to collaborate on decarbonizing the oil and gas sector; Ambipar and Kini Energias signed a partnership agreement for the installation of an industrial unit for the assembly and testing of waste suction equipment; Etu Energias signed a Technical Services Agreement with SLB for works related to Block 2/5; and an MoU was signed between Protteja Seguros and Petromar, outlining a business partnership. Additionally, the ANPG signed agreements with three Angolan universities – Universidade Agostinho Neto, the Catholic University of Angola and Instituto Superior Pliténico de Tecnologias e Ciências – to establish a cooperation program to provide technical support for energy development in Angola. 

    AOG 2022: Boosting Regional Ties

    Three deals were signed during the 2022 edition of AOG, all of which centered on strengthening regional collaboration in the oil and gas industry. Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas signed an MoU with Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy to enhance bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector; an agreement was signed between Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons and the DRC’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons to strengthen existing synergies across the energy value chain; while the ANPG signed a deal with Sierra Leone’s Petroleum Directorate to establish a shared commitment to promoting and intensifying collaboration across the oil and gas industry. These agreements highlight AOG’s role as a platform for regional actors to bolster cooperation and cross-border ties.

    AOG 2021: Attracting Investment in Exploration

    Angola’s upstream regulator the ANPG launched the country’s 2021 Bid Round during the AOG event, incentivizing exploration in deepwater Angola. This followed the closing of the 2020 tender for onshore blocks in the Lower Congo and Kwanza basins. The launch also coincided with the announcement of a new open-door mechanism to deal with prospective investors. This system allows for direct negotiation between oil and gas operators and the ANPG, enabling investment outside of the confines of a traditional licensing structure.

    AOG 2019: Supporting Infrastructure Development

    Five deals were signed during the inaugural AOG conference in 2019, underscoring the event’s role as a platform for collaboration. United Shine and Sonangol signed a partnership agreement for the construction of the Cabinda Refinery; an MoU was signed between NFE International, Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas and Ministry of Finance for the development of an LNG import and regasification terminal; a Commitment Agreement was signed between the ANPG and ExxonMobil for Block 15; while a Heads of Agreement was signed between Sonangol and Eni. Additionally, Sonangol E.P announced Kinetics Technology as the winner of a contract covering the construction of the Gasoline Production Unit for the Luanda Refinery.

    Proposal relating to number of persons on the Board of Directors

    The shareholders propose no changes to the number of the Board members, i.e. that six persons be elected to the Board of Directors, or five persons, if a person proposed by the shareholders is prevented from being a Board member of the company.

    Decision relating to the compensation of the members of the Board of Directors

    The shareholders propose no changes to the compensation of the Board members, i.e. that the Chair of the Board of Directors receives 5,000 euros per month, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors receives 4,000 euros per month and the members of the Board of Directors receive 3,000 euros per month. In addition, a compensation of 750 euros per meeting is proposed to be paid for all the Board members for each attended Board meeting and travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed according to the effectual guidelines of eQ Plc.

    Nomination of the Board of Directors

    The shareholders propose that Päivi Arminen, Nicolas Berner, Georg Ehrnrooth, Janne Larma and Tomas von Rettig are re-elected to the Board of Directors and Caroline Bertlin will be elected as a new member to the Board. If one of the persons proposed by the shareholders is prevented from being a Board member of the company, such persons will be elected who are not prevented from being Board members. The term of office of the Board members ends at the close of the next Annual General Meeting.

    Caroline Bertlin (born 1978) is an experienced business leader with vast experience in the Nordics and internationally. Bertlin is based and has spent most of her career in Sweden. Currently she is engaged in strategy and funding of energy infrastructure for Nordion Energi. Prior to that she was the CEO of Nordisk Renting and Managing Director in NatWest Structured Finance (2016-2023). Previously she worked as Head of Restructuring, Turnaround CEO and Project Lead for Strategic projects in the NatWest Group (2009-2015). Earlier experience includes portfolio management and analyst positions within banking and alternative investments. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Nordisk Renting AB (2016-). Caroline Bertlin holds a Master of Science (Economics) degree from Hanken School of Economics.

    In the Prospectus published by IDEX Biometrics ASA (“IDEX” or the “Company”) on 13 November 2024, IDEX informed that the Company had requested arbitration at the Oslo Chamber of Commerce concerning a receivable from a customer who had not yet paid. Zwipe AS (“Zwipe”), the customer in question, disclosed in its prospectus dated 4 December 2024 that it was in arbitration regarding a warranty dispute with IDEX related to the delivery of parts communicated in its annual report 2023 and that the total dispute amount was around NOK 7.1 million.

    The Oslo Chamber of Commerce has on 27 January 2025, rendered its decision on the matter, which is a final resolution of the dispute. Zwipe has been ordered to pay USD 702,000 excl. VAT to lDEX plus late payment interest. The warranty counterclaim from Zwipe was dismissed in its entirety. Zwipe was further ordered to compensate IDEX for its legal costs, and pay for the full arbitration costs.

    Zwipe shall pay IDEX the receivable and the award of legal fees within 14 days from the date of the decision.

    The city has put three non-residential premises in the west of the capital up for auction. This was reported by the head of the capital’s Department of Competition Policy Kirill Purtov.

    “Commercial properties in basements, on the first and ground floors of residential buildings and business centers, located in areas with developed infrastructure, are in demand among entrepreneurs. The city currently offers two properties for sale and one for rent in the Prospekt Vernadskogo area. The winners of the auction will be able to open various service businesses in them: shops, pharmacies, pick-up points, educational and other institutions, and in the rental lot – catering establishments. Open auctions in electronic form will be held from February 3 to March 11,” said Kirill Purtov.

    Two free-use premises with an area of 128.1 and 683.6 square meters are located on Leninsky Prospect AndUdaltsova street and have a separate entrance.

    The third commercial property the city plans to lease to businesses is located on Lobachevsky street. Its area is 566.4 square meters. It is possible to open a catering establishment there. All three lots are connected to the main communications: electricity, sewerage and water supply.

    The city regularly puts commercial properties up for auction. Currently, entrepreneurs have access to more than 310 non-residential premises and buildings. Application campaigns will end between January 29 and February 27. Registration is required to participate in the auction. on the electronic trading platform “RoselTorg” and enhanced qualified electronic signature.

         The Government announced today (January 28) its financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2024.           Expenditure and revenue from April to December 2024 amounted to HK$524.2 billion and HK$349.7 billion respectively, resulting in a deficit of HK$70.5 billion after taking into account HK$114.6 billion received from issuance of Government Bonds and repayment of HK$10.6 billion principal on Government Bonds.           A Government spokesperson said that the deficit for the period was mainly due to the fact that some major types of revenue including salaries and profits taxes are mostly received towards the end of a financial year. The revised estimates for the current financial year will be published along with the 2025-26 Budget.           The fiscal reserves stood at HK$664.1 billion as at December 31, 2024.           Detailed figures are shown in Tables 1 and 2. TABLE 1.     RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Jan. 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Saudi Capital Market Authority (CMA) has announced that foreigners are allowed to invest in Saudi listed companies in the Saudi capital market that own real estate within the boundaries of the cities of Makkah and Madinah, starting today. This follows the approval of the Controls for the Exclusion of Companies Listed in the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) from the Meaning of the Phrase (Non-Saudi) in accordance with the Law of Real Estate Ownership and Investment by Non-Saudis.

    Through this announcement, the Capital Market Authority aims to stimulate investment, enhance the attractiveness and efficiency of the capital market, and strengthen its regional and international competitiveness while supporting the local economy. This includes attracting foreign capital and providing the necessary liquidity for current and future projects in Makkah and Madinah through the investment products available in the Saudi market, positioning it as a key funding source for these distinctive developmental projects.

    According to the approved controls, foreign investment in companies owning real estate within the boundaries of Makkah and Madinah will be limited to shares of these Saudi companies listed on the Saudi capital market, convertible debt instruments, or both. However, the ownership of natural and legal persons jointly who do not hold Saudi nationality shall not exceed 49% of the company’s shares. An exception applies to strategic foreign investors, who are not permitted to own shares or convertible debt instruments in these companies.

    The approved Controls allow non-Saudi investors to benefit from the economic advantages of existing and future projects without violating the relevant laws, regulations, and instructions, particularly the Law of Real Estate Ownership and Investment by Non-Saudis, whether during the companies’ operations or liquidation.

    At the same time, according to the Controls, CMA grants Saudi listed companies the right to acquire ownership, easement, or usufruct rights over properties allocated for their headquarters or branch offices within Makkah and Madinah. This is contingent upon the property being fully utilized for this purpose and in accordance with the Exclusion Controls exemption regulations under the Law of Real Estate Ownership and Investment by Non-Saudis.

    It is worth noting that the Capital Market Authority has undertaken, and continues to implement, numerous efforts and measures to enhance the attractiveness of the Saudi capital market and facilitate the entry of foreign investors, both directly and indirectly. These efforts include allowing foreign residents to directly invest in the Saudi stock market, enabling foreign investors to access the market through swap agreements, permitting qualified foreign capital institutions to invest in listed securities, allowing foreign strategic investors to acquire strategic stakes in listed companies, and enabling foreign investors to directly invest in debt instruments. These initiatives reflect the completeness and diversity of the capital market’s funding options available for projects in Makkah and Madinah.

    In 2021, the Capital Market Authority (CMA) allowed non-Saudis to subscribe to real estate funds investing within the boundaries of Makkah and Madinah. This move contributed to the reliance on the capital market as a diverse financing channel and supported the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to make the Saudi capital market attractive to both local and foreign investments.

    The approval of the Controls came after the CMA published on 15 November 2023, the “Regulations of Foreign Investors’ Ownership of Shares in Saudi Listed Companies that have Investment Properties in Makkah and Madinah” on the Unified Electronic Platform for Consulting the Public and Government Entities (Public Consultation Platform “Istitlaa”), affiliated with the National Competitiveness Center (NCC), and the CMA’s website for public consultation for the purpose of approving the final text.

  • MIL-Evening Report: DeepSeek shatters beliefs about the cost of AI, leaving US tech giants reeling

    Almost A$1 trillion (US$600 billion) was wiped off the value of artificial intelligence microchip maker Nvidia overnight on Monday, when a little-known Chinese start up, DeepSeek, threatened to upend the US tech market.

    While Nvidia suffered the biggest one-day loss in sharemarket history, other tech giants – Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon, who are investing heavily in competing AI tools including ChatGPT and Gemini – were also hit.

    The rout was caused by investors’ shock at the claimed performance of DeepSeek’s new R1 chatbot. The Chinese AI was reported to be more advanced than its competitors and less expensive to develop.

    DeepSeek R1 has soared, becoming the top free downloaded app on Apple’s app store, as US technology and related stock prices fell dramatically.

    Why tech stocks took a deep dive

    The market was surprised by DeepSeek providing what amounts to cheaper technology but comparable performance.

    This has dramatically changed the market’s expectations of computing power, showing more can be done for less. It has also compromised the competitiveness of the US tech companies’ existing AI products and developments.

    Stock prices are driven by market expectations. The claimed performance of DeepSeek R1 prompted a major revision of expectations about what was technologically possible and about how cheaply AI could be developed and operated.

    Investors have rapidly incorporated the news of a low-cost Chinese AI competitor into stock prices, anticipating this new entrant could disrupt the market and erode the competitive advantage of existing leaders.

    Who is DeepSeek and what is R1?

    DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Chinese hedge fund High Flyer, which had been exclusively using AI in trading since 2021.

    DeepSeek develops large language models (LLMs) that can underpin chatbots and other AI-based tools. R1 is the latest iteration of DeepSeek’s chatbot and underlying model. It builds on earlier versions of generative AI models developed by DeepSeek, and considerable amounts of data, but is a surprising leap forward in performance and cost.

    Technology investors believe R1 matches or outperforms competitors, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4.o1 on numerous benchmarks.

    However, there are some key differences:

    1. The model underlying R1 operates in a much less intensive manner. It is much cheaper to develop and run, requiring less data and computing power.

    2. The training of the model was possible despite the US export ban preventing Chinese companies such as DeepSeek from accessing chips from US companies such as Nvidia. The Biden administration had introduced laws restricting the sale of certain computer chips and machinery to China, in a move intended to block its rival from accessing some of the world’s most advanced technology.

    3. The training data and data uploaded to R1 sit on servers in China. Given concerns about data privacy and intellectual property have already been raised about US-based companies, having data under jurisdiction of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is arguably even more concerning.

    4. The chatbot program code is free to download, read and modify, unlike ChatGPT. This is however somewhat a false transparency – what matters more is the underlying model, not the Chatbot code.

    5. R1 is known to censor its responses in line with Chinese Communist Party values.

    The future of AI and tech stocks

    It is unknown whether this crash in price of tech stocks is an irrational panic that will reverse, or whether it simply reflects correct pricing. The future costs and benefits of AI are still uncertain.

    This is both a technological and an economic question.

    In technological terms, it is yet to be seen whether R1 really does require less computing power and less data to train and use.

    Economically, there are potential winners and losers. AI users may win with cheaper access to AI, and LLMs in particular, leading to increased adoption and associated productivity gains. Existing producers such as Nvidia may lose out in what was a market with few real competitors.

    More broadly, society may benefit from less computationally intensive, and therefore more energy-efficient, AI. However, the geopolitical risk of a single country capturing the market, together with concerns about data privacy, intellectual property and censorship may outweigh the benefits.

    Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, Milan, Oslo and Paris / New York – 28 January 2025 – Euronext (Euronext: ENX), the leading European capital market infrastructure, and Nasdaq (Nasdaq: NDAQ), a leading transatlantic market operator and global technology company, today announced the signing of a binding agreement under which Euronext will acquire Nasdaq’s Nordic power futures business, subject to receipt of applicable regulatory approvals.

    The agreement entails the transfer of existing open positions in Nasdaq’s Nordic power derivatives, currently held in Nasdaq Clearing, to Euronext Clearing, with approval of the members. Trading of power futures will be operated from Euronext Amsterdam and will be cleared through Euronext Clearing. Nasdaq Clearing AB, Nasdaq Oslo ASA, and their respective infrastructure are not included in the sale.     Viridien has been awarded a three-year contract by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to provide advanced land seismic imaging services at its dedicated processing center (DPC) in Muscat, Oman. This new contract continues a longstanding collaborative partnership between Viridien and PDO.

    Viridien geophysical experts at the Muscat center, its largest DPC worldwide, will work to deploy the most advanced proprietary algorithms to bring step-changes in image quality to PDO’s ever-growing library of seismic data. Oman land data is characterized by complex near-surface conditions and strong multiples. High-resolution velocity model building, and elastic full-waveform inversion will be key to overcoming these challenges and to enhancing subsurface understanding. The proposed transaction values the completed site at approximately $85 million, inclusive of approximately $19 million of power deposits with ANDE and the assumption of remaining capital obligations.

    Bitfarms to receive:

    • $25 million upon closing of this transaction
    • $31 million over 6 months following closing
    • $19 million as reimbursement for power deposits made to ANDE by Bitfarms
    • Approximately $10 million in remaining capital obligations

    Transaction Benefits

    • Significantly reduces Bitfarms’ anticipated 2025 capital requirements.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Interview with Hamish Macdonald, Sydney Mornings, ABC Radio

    Hamish Macdonald:

    Are you finding the cost of living getting any better this year, or are things as tight as they ever have been? The federal Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, is pointing some good news on inflation this morning. The latest quarterly figure show petrol, furniture, games, toys all down – the biggest price fall, though, seems to be electricity down almost 16 per cent, that’s due largely to those household energy rebates.

    So what I want to hear from you this morning is, are you noticing any of this? How’s the bank statement looking at the end of the month? 1300 222 702 is the number. Let me know what you’re thinking about this. And perhaps the big question is, might these numbers point to a cut in your mortgage rates anytime soon? Jim Chalmers is here, good morning.

    Jim Chalmers:

    Good morning Hamish, thanks for having me on your show.

    Macdonald:

    We haven’t been getting a lot of good news on the cost‑of‑living front for some time. Have you got any good news for us this morning?

    Chalmers:

    Well, tomorrow we’ll get a big update on the inflation numbers in our economy. And first of all, I want to acknowledge that even at the same time as we are making as a country very substantial, very now sustained progress on the fight against inflation, we know that people are still under pressure. I suspect when people call into the program after the interview, they will convey that to you as they convey that to us, and we take that very seriously – but in aggregate, in the in the national economic data, what we have seen over the last couple of years is a quite remarkable moderation in inflation. Remember, when we came to office, inflation was higher than 6 per cent and rising. It’s now got a 2 in front of it.

    So we’ll get that update tomorrow. It will remind us of that substantial progress that we’ve made on inflation. Any number with a 2 in front of it will show that inflation has more than half since this government came to office. Any number with a 2 in front of it in the headline number will show that it’s within the Reserve Bank’s target band. Any progress on underlying inflation would be welcome as well. But we know that it doesn’t always immediately translate into how people are feeling and faring in the economy. We know that people are still battling to make ends meet.

    Macdonald:

    How do you explain that? Because obviously that’s what I hear from Sydney listeners. It’s obviously what people come and talk to you about; the sense that maybe the statistics, maybe the trend lines, are pointing to things getting better, but that it doesn’t necessarily feel that way. How do you explain that?

    Chalmers:

    Because the fight against inflation isn’t over. You know, it’s not mission accomplished, even if we get very encouraging numbers tomorrow, as we have been getting encouraging inflation numbers for some months now, you know, we would recognise that it’s not, it’s not mission accomplished – because people are still dealing with stresses and strains in their household budget.

    But what’s happened over the last 2 and a half years since this government’s come to office, is inflation’s come down very substantially, but what we’ve been able to do, unlike a lot of other countries, is we’ve been able to do that at the same time as we’ve got wages up, we’ve kept unemployment very low, we’ve got the budget into better condition. Even though we recognise those pressures are still there, we shouldn’t diminish what Australians have achieved together over the course of the last couple of years. Not every country has been able to do what we’ve been able to do, to get inflation down and wages up and unemployment low, all at the same time.

    I think it’s possible to do, as we do, to recognise those pressures are still there. It’s still very important that we’re rolling out those tax cuts, the energy bill relief that you referred to, and all the cost‑of‑living help that Peter Dutton opposed. That’s still important that we roll it out because people are under pressure. But we should recognise at the same time that we’ve made substantial and sustained progress in the fight against inflation and those new numbers tomorrow will reflect that.

    Macdonald:

    Now, I know you don’t speculate on the Reserve Bank will or won’t do when it meets, but a lot of people are very focused on that February meeting. People here in Sydney are really feeling it with home loan repayments. Do you think this year will be a better year?

    Chalmers:

    Well, I do acknowledge – especially in Sydney, but not just in Sydney – that interest rates, which started going up before the election, have gone up a number of times. They are one of the causes of this cost‑of‑living pressure that people are enduring and trying to deal with. So I do recognise that. You’re right, that I don’t make commentary or predictions or try and give free advice to the independent Reserve Bank. I focus on my job, which is doing what we can to fight inflation and roll that cost‑of‑living relief in a responsible way, keep unemployment low, get wages growing, all of those things that we’ve been talking about this morning. I leave the predictions or the commentary about rates decisions to others, to the independent Reserve Bank, primarily, and also to all of the other commentators who are interested in this at the moment.

    Macdonald:

    Sure, but this is really a question about what might unfold around those things this year. I mean, you must think about all the time. As most Sydneysiders with mortgages would as well.

    Chalmers:

    I do, and in the broad, in the main, I think that there are real reasons for people to be confident about 2025 – acknowledging that the last few years have been especially difficult for people, I think there is good cause for confidence, not complacency, about our economy in 2025 for a couple of reasons.

    First of all, we are making progress on inflation. We have got those real wages growing. We have kept the jobs market in really quite extraordinary condition. So all of those things will flow through into some of the other indicators, we expect growth in our economy to pick up a little bit, not a lot, a little bit, and that will be a good thing – but primarily the reason why people can be more confident about 2025 than 2024 is we’re seeing some of the fruits of our collective efforts. If you look at that most recent data we got from the national accounts – which is the big report card on our economy – growth was weak in our economy, but the combination of real wages growing again, inflation coming down and the tax cuts rolling out, means that we are starting to make up some of the ground that’s been lost over the last few years when it comes to living standards. And so that does give me a bit more confidence, not getting carried away about 2025 – there’s still a lot of global economic uncertainty, for example. But we are more confident about 2025 than we have been about the last couple of years.

    Macdonald:

    I read a piece, you’ve written an op‑ed in News Limited publications in the last few days. And you say every taxpayer is better off as a result of the decision you took 12 months ago, that’s obviously referring to changes you made to the stage 3 tax cuts. You say not just some, and those benefits will be even bigger from July this year. It seems to me that this is going to be a central question at the election, because Peter Dutton is saying are you better off after a term of the Albanese government? It’s pretty obvious a lot of people don’t necessarily feel better off. So the question is, would we all be better off if you’re re‑elected. It sounds like you’re making an argument to say we would be. Why is that?

    Chalmers:

    Well, the point I’m referring to in that piece I wrote for the media is that as we get wages growing, the tax cuts get bigger as well. I see those 2 things really as of a piece. You know, we’re all about making sure people can earn more and keep more of what they earn, getting wages growing, giving every Australian taxpayer a tax cut, getting inflation down, keeping unemployment low. These are our objectives, and these are the things that we have been achieving as a government, recognising that a lot of the pressures are still there.

    Now, you asked me about the choice at the election. I think one of the most important things for people to understand as we get nearer and nearer to this election is that if Peter Dutton had his way, not every taxpayer would’ve got a tax cut. No households would’ve got energy bill relief. They like lower wages, he went after Medicare when he was the Health Minister. The biggest risk to household budgets, and I think to the economy more broadly in 2025, is Peter Dutton and a Coalition government. And we know that they are a risk to household budgets because we know their record on some of these things: Medicare, wages, cost‑of‑living relief and the like.

    Macdonald:

    Just on that, though – you’re taking a pretty big swing there, the opposition says that they would tame the budget more, this would get our economy moving better, and we’d all benefit from that. So some of these pressures would reside. How do you answer that?

    Chalmers:

    Well, they have 2 economic policies, Hamish. One is taxpayer funded long lunches for bosses, and the other one is to push up electricity prices with this nuclear insanity that they’re pushing. Those are the 2 economic policies that they have announced. They say there’s hundreds of billions too much spending in the Budget, but they won’t come clean on what the cuts would be if they came to office. We know that after many cared last time, so it’s within our rights to point out. But the key question here really is the cost of living in this election campaign. People would have been worse off by thousands of dollars over the last couple of years if Peter Dutton had have his way, and they’ll be worse off still if he wins the election. And that is part of the choice that people will weigh up as we get closer and closer to election day this year.

    Macdonald:

    I’m talking to the federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers, I should make it clear we have been talking to Peter Dutton about joining the program to speak to you here in Sydney as well. We hope that will happen very soon.

    Jim Chalmers, a text from Jeff asking this: Hamish, ask Jim what’s caused the deep per capita recession we’re in? Why they run immigration at unheard of levels during a housing crisis?

    Chalmers:

    Well Jeff, a couple of things about your question – I appreciate you texting in. First of all, on migration, we saw a big recovery in the numbers after COVID, but we’re managing that level down to more normal levels, and we expect to see the fruits of that over the next year or 2. So that’s part of your question. When it comes to the per capita measure of growth in our economy, growth in our economy is remarkably weak, we have acknowledged that – but unlike a lot of other countries around the world, we’ve actually managed to keep the economy growing.

    The UK has had a recession, New Zealand is in recession right now, most of the OECD countries have had a negative quarter of growth. We’ve been able to avoid that, but growth is weak in the economy, and we see that reflected in the per capita measure. If you take a step back – Jeff and Hamish and all your listeners – acknowledging the pressures that people are under, acknowledging growth in our economy is week. We have a combination of things in our economy which a lot of other countries would like. We’ve kept the economy ticking over. We’ve got inflation down, we’ve got wages up, we’ve kept unemployment low, we’ve delivered 2 budget surpluses, we’ve got the Liberal debt down, and that means we’re paying less interest on it. All of these things are good things. We don’t pretend the job is finished – obviously it’s not because people are still under pressure and we know we’ve got more work to do, but the biggest risk to this progress would be a Dutton Coalition government who would make people worse off, not better off.

    Macdonald:

    For all of that, that list you rattle off about what you say are your achievements, many Australians are not that happy with you. You know, the polls – I don’t want to get into poll arguments – pointing to many Australians considering Peter Dutton as Prime Minister. Clearly, the shift is afoot in terms of polling. Why are you not getting credit for it, then?

    Do you acknowledge that perhaps Australians are feeling quite so positive and optimistic as you paint it?

    Chalmers:

    I think I’ve acknowledged that probably half a dozen times in the course of this conversation, Hamish – that people are under pressure, I think you see that reflected in opinion polls. Obviously I notice these opinion polls, I don’t obsess over them – the numbers I’m focused on are the numbers in the economy, but I think I’ve acknowledged numerous times today that people are still under pressure and we see that reflected in the polls.

    Macdonald:

    A question about something slightly related to this: Donald Trump’s established something called a DOGE – a Department of Government Efficiency – that will be led in part by Elon Musk. Peter reshuffled his shadow cabinet and we now have a SMOGE – I think is the abbreviation – a Shadow Minister for Government Efficiency. Now we can see how that worked out for Trump’s opponent. What are you going to do to counter this idea?

    Chalmers:

    What do you mean you can see how this worked out –

    Macdonald:

    – Trump’s opponent. Kamala Harris. She didn’t win. So the question is, how are we going to –

    Chalmers:

    Oh, okay, you’re saying that was decisive in the American election, okay. I think a couple of things about that. I saw that reshuffle that Peter Dutton made on the weekend. I don’t think it’s much of a vote of confidence in Shadow Finance Minister or Shadow Treasurer that he thought it necessary to make that appointment. And I’d also point out that this Labor government, as part of delivering those 2 surpluses and a $200 billion positive turnaround in the Budget and getting the debt down, one of the big reasons for that is this government has found $92 billion worth of savings across 3 Budgets and updates. And what that’s shown is we can find the necessary savings to get the budget in much better nick without making these sorts of announcements that Peter Dutton made.

    I compare that $92 billion in savings to the last Budget of the Coalition government before we came office, which had zero savings in it. What we’ve shown, is we can have all the fancy titles that they like, but we’ve got a Finance Minister in Katy Gallagher and a cabinet for whom responsible economic management is really the defining feature of how we go about managing the budget. We found those savings without finding it necessary to have these kinds of titles that Peter Dutton gave to one of his colleagues on the weekend.

    Macdonald:

    I want to ask you about the position the government’s ended up in on gambling advertising, it seems, a lot of listeners pretty upset about this. We heard from Mary‑Lynne yesterday on the question of gambling ads, and whether she’d vote for your government again.

    Listener:

    Well, I can’t actually see myself going voting for either side at the moment. I think I’m going independent this time, well and truly – but one of my main criticisms is that Albanese came in, was going to do something about the gambling ads. As soon as he was in, he became wishy‑washy about the gambling ads, and there’s been absolutely nothing done about the gambling ads. All through the tennis, all through TV, day and night, we’re up to our eyeballs in gambling ads, and neither side is doing anything about this. And I think it’s just completely a reflection of the lack of action by the government.

    Macdonald:

    That was Mary‑Lynne speaking to us yesterday.

    Now, I’ve been reading in the papers that the Prime Minister had met with the bosses at the TV networks, the sporting codes, just a fortnight before essentially ditching the plans that you had in place. Did you get rumbled by these big executives on this?

    Chalmers:

    No, of course not. But I do want to acknowledge that there are a lot of people like Mary‑Lynne who want us to go further and faster when it comes to gambling advertising. But where I differ respectfully with Mary‑Lynne’s comments is when I point out that we have actually done a lot when it comes to gambling reform. You know, we introduced Betstop, we introduced the warnings, we banned credit cards from online gambling – and we’ll continue to work through the recommendations of the Murphy inquiry into online gambling, and we are doing a lot of consultation.

    We know that there are a range of views in the community, including Mary‑Lynne’s, but I don’t agree, respectfully, that nothing has happened. We have done probably more to crack down on the harms of online gambling, particularly for young people, than any government before. We acknowledge people want us to do more than that, but we haven’t done nothing.

    Macdonald:

    Chalmers:

    I listen to it a lot, Hamish. I wasn’t expecting Tupac on Sydney morning radio today, but it’s a real favourite of mine. It’s a very regular feature of my playlist.

    So what are you listening to while you write this year’s Budget?

    Chalmers:

    I find that my musical tastes are mellowing over time, and so I listen to a lot of very chilled electronic music now. I still listen to Tupac from time to time, usually on a running playlist rather than a working playlist.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Call for information – Aggravated robbery and assault worker – Katherine

    The Northern Territory Police Force are calling for information after an aggravated robbery and an assault worker incident occurred over the long weekend.

    Around 10.55pm Sunday 26 January 2025, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre (JESCC) received a report that five youths allegedly caused damage to the front doors of a service station on Bicentennial Road. The group then jumped the counter and stole a quantity of cigarettes and the cash register and fled the location on foot.

    The staff were able to secure themselves in a staff room during the incident.

    A short time later, police attended, and a crime scene was established.

    Investigations are ongoing.

    In a separate incident at 12.40am this morning, the JESCC received a report that a group of youths were throwing rocks at a service station on Bicentennial Road. A security worker intervened, and the group fled the location on foot.

    The youths returned a short time later and began throwing rocks at the service station and the security worker, striking the 72-year-old male in the head before fleeing the scene on foot.

    Police and St. John Ambulance attended and provided first aid to the victim.

    Strike Force Cerberus have carriage of the incidents and investigations are ongoing.

    Senior Sergeant Warren Scott said, “This behaviour is unacceptable, and no one deserves to be assaulted while at work.

    “We take this type of offending incredibly seriously and will work tirelessly to locate and prosecute the individuals responsible.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Central Georgian Pleads Guilty to Illegally Building Machineguns

    Agents Seized 3D Printers, Equipment to Build Firearms and Silencers from Defendant’s Bedroom

    MACON, Ga. – A technical college student who described himself as a “machinist” and was building machineguns and silencers using a 3D printer out of his Lizella, Georgia, bedroom pleaded guilty to manufacturing a machinegun.

    Jaden Michael-William Pope, 20, of Lizella, pleaded guilty to one count of manufacture of an unregistered machinegun before U.S. District Judge Marc T. Treadwell on Jan. 27. Pope faces a maximum of ten years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 13. There is no parole in the federal system.

    “3-D printed machineguns and silencers pose a significant threat to the safety of our communities by increasing the access of illegally manufactured rapid-fire weapons to potentially dangerous individuals,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Shanelle Booker. “I applaud our local and federal law enforcement partners for shutting down this clandestine machinegun manufacturing operation.”

    “The collaboration between ATF and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office showcases our unwavering commitment to confronting the illegal production of firearms, especially those created through advanced methods like 3D printing,” said ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Beau Kolodka. “These weapons are designed to evade detection and accountability, posing an undeniable threat to public safety. Together, we are ensuring such dangers are swiftly and decisively addressed.”

    According to the stipulation of fact and other statements referenced in court, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office was investigating Pope in Sept. 2023, for stealing firearms out of vehicles at night. He was arrested and admitted to stealing from cars. Investigators found photos on Pope’s cell phone of personally manufactured firearms and firearm silencers as well as screenshots from a website called Yeggi, which offers 3D-printed templates of AR-15 full auto sears. A confidential source (CS) notified law enforcement that Pope was a machinist who was manufacturing firearms, including silencers, in his bedroom and that he had watched Pope shoot a firearm with a manufactured silencer that significantly diminished the sound.

    The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (“ATF”) was contacted to further the investigation. Agents found photos Pope posted on Facebook of personally manufactured firearms, including a Glock handgun with a “switch,” which is a device that allows the semi-automatic firearm to fire full-automatic with a single trigger pull. On his Facebook profile, Pope described himself as a “machinist” and a student at a local technical college. Agents executed a search warrant at Pope’s home on Dec. 12, 2023, and found four 3D printers, three computers, two machineguns, nine silencers and a short-barreled rifle. Agents also found a stolen .45 caliber pistol.

    Along with the 3D printers and weapons seized, agents found additional evidence that Pope manufactured the machineguns, silencers and the short-barreled rifle. Agents found diagrams and instructions for building the firearms, notes related to their production, scrap parts, and failed 3D prints and residue. Agents analyzed the computers used with the 3D printers and found “g-codes” which is the computer programming code used to 3D print the machineguns, silencers and the short-barreled rifle. While searching the electronic devices, agents found methamphetamine hidden within a USB device.

    This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities; supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place; setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities; and measuring the results.

    The case was investigated by ATF and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

    I am honored to serve as chairman of the powerful Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. This subcommittee’s investigatory record spans decades and its reputation for conducting thorough oversight and exposing wrongdoing is unparalleled. It is my privilege to build on that legacy.
    I look forward to working with Ranking Member Richard Blumenthal and other members of the subcommittee to uncover the truth on issues that are important to the American people. My hope is that the subcommittee’s work will be largely non-partisan. There should be nothing partisan about revealing the truth.
    Absurd Spending Needs to Change

    Current spending is completely unsustainable, unjustified, and absurd. We have to return to pre-pandemic spending levels. It’s time for a paradigm shift in the way we use our budgets.
    The people that voted for President Trump do not expect the federal government is going to continue spending at President Biden and the Democrats’ spending levels.
    On January 16, I spoke on the Senate floor to discuss the importance of returning to a reasonable pre-pandemic spending level and the massive deficit spending that is devaluing the U.S. dollar.

    Cabinet Confirmation Hearings

    Since the start of the 119th Congress, we have been holding confirmation hearings for President Trump’s cabinet nominees. 
    Here are some highlights from the hearings I have participated in:
    Kristi Noem: For too long the Department of Homeland Security has been completely misused. Their mission creep under the Biden administration has caused the agency to leave America vulnerable. I look forward to working with Kristi Noem as DHS Secretary to secure the homeland again.
    Scott Bessent: The pick for Treasury Secretary and I agree that the U.S. does not have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. I look forward to voting for Scott Bessent’s confirmation and working with him to reset spending levels to a reasonable pre-pandemic level.
    Sean Duffy: I was proud to introduce Wisconsin’s own Sean Duffyin his confirmation hearing. Sean will be a strong and dedicated leader of the Department of Transportation, prioritizing safety and investing in infrastructure projects that connect our communities. We are fortunate that he is willing to serve the public again, and I recommend him as Secretary without reservation.
    News from the 119th Congress

    The Laken Riley Act passed Congress and will be the first bill signed into law by President Trump. I voted to pass the bill which will give local law enforcement and ICE more tools to combat illegal immigrants who commit crime in the United States.  
    I joined a letter to President Trump encouraging him to reinstate and broaden the life-affirming pro-life policies in the early days of his new administration and end the weaponization of the U.S. government against pro-life Americans and unborn children.
    As part of the MAHA Caucus, we were pleased to see the FDA ban Red No. 3 from foods, dietary supplements, and ingested medicines. We look forward to addressing the root causes of chronic diseases and creating a healthier, stronger nation with President Trump and HHS nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrest – Robbery – Alice Springs

    The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested a 14-year-old male in relation to a robbery that occurred in Alice Springs on Sunday.

    Around 11.50am, police received reports that a robbery had occurred at a service station in Braitling.

    Four male youths had allegedly entered the store and stolen food and drinks, with one of the youths allegedly armed with an edged weapon. The youth allegedly threatened staff with the weapon before all offenders fled the scene on foot.

    Strike Force Viper members attended and commenced investigations. CCTV footage was reviewed, and the 14-year-old male was identified and arrested around 12.55pm. The edged weapon was confirmed to be a plastic toy and was seized by police.

    Investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining offenders.

    Working people and businesses are set to benefit from new rules that will give more flexibility over how occupational defined benefit pension schemes are managed, as the government continues to remove blockages that are inhibiting its growth agenda that will improve lives of working people across the UK.

    Working people and businesses are set to benefit from new rules that will give more flexibility over how occupational defined benefit pension schemes are managed, as the government continues to remove blockages that are inhibiting its growth agenda that will improve lives of working people across the UK. 

    Hosting a meeting with leaders of Britain’s biggest businesses in the City of London today (Tuesday 28 January), the Prime Minister and the Chancellor will set out the details of changes and tell some of the country’s leading CEOs that Britain is back and open for business.

    At the roundtable, the PM and Chancellor will outline how restrictions will be lifted on how well-funded, occupational defined benefit pension funds that are performing well will be able to invest their surplus funds. 

    This follows action taken by the government last week to bring a renewed focus on growth from some of the UK’s biggest regulators, a shake-up to legal challenges on planning applications, and new “brownfield passports” to speed up housing in commuter hotspots.

    Prime Minister, Keir Starmer said: 

    The number one mission of my government is to secure growth, drive higher living standards for everyone, and get more money into people’s pockets.

    To achieve the change our country needs requires nothing short of rewiring the economy. It needs creative reform, the removal of hurdles, and unrelenting focus. Whether it’s how public services are run, regulation or pension rules, my government will not accept the status quo. Today’s changes will unlock billions of investment, pushing forward in delivering my Plan for Change.

    Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves said:

    I know this government and businesses are united on growth being the top priority for our economy, which is why I am fighting every day to tear down the biggest barriers to growth, taking on regulators, planning processes and opposition to this urgent mission.

    The Prime Minister and Chancellor will tell CEOs from some of the UK’s most successful companies that that the government is seeking to create the best possible conditions for the private sector to thrive. They will promise to work in partnership with businesses, to deliver high-quality jobs across the country, and the economic growth that will fund the schools, hospitals and roads that we all rely on.

    Pension trustees and the sponsoring employers could then use this money to increase the productivity of their businesses – to boost wages and drive growth or unlock more money for pension scheme members. 

    High growth and more productive businesses boost the size of the economy which in turn will fund our vital public services.

    This more efficient approach demonstrates that the government has been listening to business, and will give businesses more flexibility, allowing trapped surplus funds to be invested into the wider UK economy, or given to scheme members as additional benefits.

    Where trustees agree to share a portion of scheme surplus with a sponsoring employer, the employer may choose to invest these funds in their core business, for example to purchase equipment or supplies, and/or provide additional benefits to members of the pension scheme.

    Approximately 75% of schemes are currently in surplus, worth £160 billion, but restrictions have meant that businesses have struggled to invest them.

    These reforms build on the Chancellor’s Mansion House reforms which will create pension megafunds as part of the biggest set of pension reforms in decades, unlocking billions of pounds of investment in exciting new businesses and infrastructure and local projects.     

    Over £1.1 trillion is held by pension funds in the UK and defined contribution pension schemes are set to manage £800 billion worth of assets by the end of the decade. This Government is determined to encourage these pension funds to deliver investment and drive economic growth – which is the only way to make people better off.    

    Jonathan Lipkin, Director of Policy, Strategy & Innovation at the Investment Association said:

    Unlocking surplus capital from defined benefit schemes has the potential to both boost UK growth by opening up investment opportunities for companies and their stakeholders, as well as the possibility of higher pensions for scheme members. With around £1.1 trillion in assets, defined benefit schemes already make a significant contribution to the funding of the UK economy and public services. 

    With the right guardrails in place, the government’s proposals could help channel more funding into the economy, by enabling schemes to invest more widely and take on greater risk, while allowing for members to receive an uplift to pension benefits.

    Zoe Alexander, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Pensions and Lifetime Saving Association, said: 

    The PLSA backs surplus release, with the right protections in place to ensure member benefits are secure. Surpluses could be used to increase DB scheme benefits or could be redirected to fund contributions to sponsoring employers’ defined contribution workplace schemes.

    Lowering the legislative threshold for allowing returns of surplus could potentially encourage trustees, in conjunction with their employers, to adopt a more ambitious mindset and take on slightly riskier investment strategies for their DB assets, including greater investment in UK assets.

    It is positive news to see the government is looking at the pension industry as a whole. This will help unlock more of the £2.9trillion that is held in UK pension savings, to benefit savers and the economy alike.

    The roundtable discussion will focus on the government’s partnership approach to growth with business, including how regulation can better support the Growth Mission, and the role of business in achieving the UK’s ambitions in AI which the Prime Minister unveiled earlier this month. Every regulator has a role to play in the Growth Mission and the Chancellor is hosting a series of roundtables with the 17 regulators that the Prime Minister wrote to in December, to discuss their proposals to support growth in the coming year. 

    The meeting with CEOs comes days after the Chancellor’s return from the World Economic Forum, where she pitched Britain’s investment credentials and let global business leaders know that the UK is open for business again. She championed early reforms to planning, pensions, and regulation that make it easier to do business in Britain and remove barriers investors from overseas face.

    On Wednesday, the Chancellor will make a speech where she will set out plans to push through further planning reforms to get Britian building again, rip up regulatory barriers so we can encourage more investment into the UK and announcements to boost trade and investment.

    The government will set out the details of the surplus policy in its response to the Options for Defined Benefits consultation, due this Spring.

    Further information: 

    • Currently DB scheme surplus can only be accessed where schemes passed a resolution by 2016, so not all schemes can access surplus even if trustees and sponsors both want to do so. 
    • Legislative changes could enable all DB schemes to change their rules to permit surplus extraction where there is trustee-employer agreement. This allows trustees to assess the suite of options available in striking a deal with employers on how best scheme members can also benefit – linked to improving member outcomes. 
    • Trustees have an overarching fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of their members. When considering surplus extraction, trustees must fund the scheme and invest its assets in a way that leads to members receiving their full benefits.
