    An all-party parliamentary delegation led by Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Jha on Tuesday conveyed that India will give a fitting reply to any terrorist attack on its soil and will not tolerate any form of nuclear blackmail.

    During their meeting with Sim Ann, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, the parliamentarians emphasized the importance of Operation Sindoor and reiterated India’s stand against Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

    Condemning all acts of terrorism, Sim Ann extended Singapore’s support to India in its fight against terrorism. She affirmed that Singapore and India are close partners and will continue efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, according to a statement from the Indian High Commission in Singapore.

    During the engagement, Jha briefed the Singaporean side on India’s stance regarding the events following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, the subsequent launch of Operation Sindoor, and the country’s “new normal” strategy in counter-terrorism.

    He underlined that the Indian delegation, comprising representatives from various political parties, reflects the nation’s united resolve against terrorism.

    “The delegation members conveyed that the terrorist attack in Pahalgam was an attempt to disrupt the trajectory of peace, development, and normalcy in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Government of India deemed it essential that the perpetrators and planners of the April 22 terror attack be brought to justice. In response to this heinous act, India launched Operation Sindoor, specifically targeting terrorist infrastructure. India’s response was measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible,” the Indian High Commission said.

    The delegation also sought Singapore’s support in combating terrorism at multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). As close partners, India and Singapore will continue to work together on regional and global issues, particularly on terrorism, the statement added.

    Later in the day, the Jha-led delegation met senior representatives from the Singaporean government, academia, media, and businesses, briefing them on developments since the Pahalgam attack.

    The delegates expressed appreciation for the presence of Singapore’s Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary and Members of Parliament Vikram Nair and Saktiandi Supaat, thanking them for their support in India’s fight against terrorism.

    “Our all-party parliamentary delegation held wide-ranging discussions with senior representatives from the Singaporean government, academia, media, and business sectors. We briefed interlocutors on developments following the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and India’s resolute ‘new normal’ in combating terrorism. We thank Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary and MPs Vikram Nair and Saktiandi Supaat for their support in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the global fight against terrorism,” Jha said in a post on X.

    The delegation includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Hemang Joshi, and Pradan Baruah; Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Barittas; senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid; and former Indian Ambassador to France Mohan Kumar.

  • Puducherry hosts 25-day countdown event to International Day of Yoga 2025

    The countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY), celebrated annually on June 21, officially began on Tuesday with a large-scale event in Puducherry.

    Over 6,000 yoga enthusiasts gathered at the scenic Gandhi Thidal, a seafront open-air venue, as Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the 25-day countdown to IDY 2025.

    This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reflects a universal vision for a healthier planet and humanity.

    Addressing the gathering, Jadhav emphasized the deep cultural roots of yoga in Puducherry, the spiritual home of Maharishi Aurobindo. He described yoga as more than a physical practice—an ancient art that connects the mind and body, promoting peace, power, and clarity.

    Jadhav praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his global advocacy of yoga, attributing the worldwide recognition of June 21 as the International Day of Yoga to his efforts.

    Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan echoed these sentiments, calling Yoga an ancient science that integrates physical well-being and mental fortitude. He underlined its global reach and increasing adoption, not only in personal lives but across educational institutions, workplaces, and defence sectors. He also expressed national pride in PM Modi’s contribution to yoga’s global stature.

    Chief Minister Rangasamy highlighted Puducherry’s unique environment of peace and spirituality, making it an ideal location for such an inspiring event. He described yoga as a journey of inner exploration and harmony with nature, noting that Puducherry stands as a global destination for spiritual seekers.

    A notable outcome of the event was the surge in registrations on the Yoga Sangam Portal, launched earlier during the 50-day countdown event in Nashik. Over 12,000 people have registered so far, reflecting a nationwide surge in Yoga participation and interest.

    The Puducherry event builds on a series of significant countdown celebrations leading to IDY 2025, preceded by the 100-day event in New Delhi, the 75-day celebration in Bhubaneswar, and the 50-day program in Nashik.

    This year’s International Day of Yoga, marking its 11th edition, promises to be the most inclusive yet, with ten signature programs lined up to spread the message of holistic wellness. These include large-scale synchronized yoga demonstrations, community engagement initiatives like Yoga Parks, inclusive programs for vulnerable groups, sustainability campaigns, and the Global Online Yoga Summit that will connect experts, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world.

  • Fintech driving growth for MSMEs and merchants, says FM Sitharaman

    Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that India’s fintech companies are playing a crucial role in expanding the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and empowering merchants as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

    The Finance Minister visited the office of Pine Labs, a digital fintech company based in Noida, and interacted with its employees and staff members.

    She acknowledged “India’s fintech firms’ contribution to expanding the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and in enabling seamless, secure, and inclusive financial services for merchants and MSMEs,” the Finance Minister’s Office said in a post on X.

    B. Amrish Rau, CEO of Pine Labs, shared his excitement in a post on X, saying that it was “an exciting and unbelievable day… It was a full house and our FM was completely immersed in her interactions and tech discussions.”

    Pine Labs is a merchant commerce omnichannel platform operating across India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The company focuses on simplifying digital payments and helping businesses scale their fintech solutions.

    Meanwhile, UPI QR codes have shown the fastest growth in India’s digital payments infrastructure in the financial year 2024–25, registering a 91.5 percent increase over the previous year, reaching 657.9 million.

    The number of banks going live on UPI continues to rise, reaching a total of 668 in April, which is expected to boost the value of transactions, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

    UPI has emerged as the dominant method for digital transactions in India. Nearly four out of every five digital payments in the country during FY24 were conducted via UPI, according to the RBI’s annual report.

    The RBI has also introduced greater flexibility in revising transaction limits for in-person UPI merchant payments. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) can now adjust limits based on user needs, with appropriate safeguards—making UPI even more convenient for users.

    India’s digital payments ecosystem witnessed a significant surge in the second half of 2024, driven by the increased use of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile payments, and cards, according to Worldline India’s Digital Payments Report.

    Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel, who is on a three-day visit to India, will lead the Maldivian delegation at 2nd India-Maldives High Level Core Group (HLCG) meeting in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting will oversee progress in the implementation of India-Maldives Vision Document on Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, adopted during Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s India visit in October 2024.

    Khaleel will also hold bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

    On Sunday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal extended a warm welcome to Khaleel on his arrival in New Delhi.

    Jaiswal shared a post on X, “Implementing the India – Maldives Joint Vision of a ‘Comprehensive Economic & Maritime Security Partnership’. Warm welcome to FM @abkhaleel of Maldives to India. FM Dr. Khaleel will lead the Maldivian delegation at the 2nd High Level Core Group (HLCG) meeting which oversees implementation of the Joint Vision.”

    This will be Khaleel’s third visit to India in 2025, following his earlier visits in January and March, and is in continuation of intensified high level political exchanges between the two nations.   • Sensex soars 640 points, Nifty crosses 25,000 mark on positive sentiment

    The Indian stock market opened on a strong note Monday, buoyed by positive investor sentiment following India’s ascent to the fourth spot in the global economy rankings.

    By 9:32 a.m., the BSE Sensex had rallied 640.3 points, or 0.78%, to trade at 82,361.46. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty was up 187.39 points, or 0.75%, at 25,040.45.

    The broader market also saw an upward trend. The Nifty Bank index gained 408.25 points, or 0.74%, reaching 55,806.50. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 426.60 points to 57,114.35, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 145.90 points to 17,789.25, registering a 0.83% gain.

    Analysts attributed the early rally to the news of India becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy, calling it a morale booster for markets in the short term. Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India’s record dividend payout to the central government—exceeding budget estimates—is expected to aid in containing the fiscal deficit at 4.4% for FY26.

    “This, in turn, can help sustain the current low inflation trend and a declining interest rate environment, both of which are supportive of equity markets. While foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were strong buyers earlier in May, the trend has turned erratic recently, suggesting profit booking at higher levels,” said V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

    In the Sensex basket, top gainers included M&M, PowerGrid, NTPC, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, SBI, Tech Mahindra, L&T, Asian Paints, and Axis Bank. Eternal was the only notable loser in early trade.

    In Asia, markets traded mixed. Indices in Bangkok, Seoul, and Tokyo were in the green, while markets in China, Hong Kong, and Jakarta saw declines.

    Globally, the last trading session in the U.S. ended lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,603.07, down 256.02 points or 0.61%. The S&P 500 dropped 39.19 points (0.67%) to 5,802.82, and the Nasdaq declined 188.53 points (1.00%) to settle at 18,737.21.

    On the institutional investment front, FIIs were net buyers, purchasing equities worth ₹1,794.59 crore on May 23. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also bought stocks worth ₹299.78 crore.

    Looking ahead, key economic data such as India’s GDP figures, the U.S. Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, and U.S. inflation numbers are expected to influence market sentiment this week.

    “Geopolitical uncertainties, the ongoing corporate earnings season, institutional capital flows, and the upcoming derivatives expiry are currently driving volatility in Indian equity markets,” said Devarsh Vakil, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities.

    Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) and Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL) introduced legislation to reauthorize critical reentry grant programs from the Second Chance Act of 2008 to support reentry efforts including housing, career training and job placement, and substance use disorder and mental health treatment. The Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2025 would reauthorize critical programs to reduce recidivism, invest in communities, and promote public safety.
     
    Over 95% of the prison population will eventually be released, with more than 600,000 individuals returning to their communities from prison each year and an even higher number entering and exiting local jails. To address this need and to improve reentry services and lower recidivism rates, the Second Chance Act was passed by Congress with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Bush in April 2008. The Act was last reauthorized by President Trump in 2018.
     
    Senators Capito (R-WV) and Booker (D-NJ) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate.
     
    “Since the Second Chance Act passed in 2008, formerly incarcerated West Virginians reentering our communities have received the vital services and support they needed to return home successfully,” said Rep. Miller. “We have seen the benefits of the Second Chance Act in West Virginia and across the country.     Background:
    The Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2025 would:

    1. Reauthorize key grant programs that provide vital services, supports, and resources for people reentering their communities after incarceration;
    2. Expand allowable uses for supportive and transitional housing services for individuals reentering the community from prison and jail; and
    3. Enhance addiction treatment services for individuals with substance use disorders, including peer recovery services, case management, and overdose prevention.

     
    Since its passage 16 years ago, Second Chance has supported states, local governments, tribal governments, and nonprofit organizations in their efforts to reduce recidivism. To date, Second Chance grants have reached more than 442,000 justice-involved individuals who participated in reentry services or parole and probation programs. From 2009 to 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice awarded over 1,300 Second Chance Act grants to states, local, and tribal governments, as well as reentry-focused community organizations. Second Chance grants have been administered to 871 agencies across 49 U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia.
     
    The legislation is supported by the Council of State Governments Justice Center, Correctional Leaders Association, Major County Sheriffs of America, Conservative Political Action Conference, American Correctional Association, American Jail Association, Prison Fellowship, National District Attorneys Association, American Parole and Probation Association, National Alliance on Mental Illness, National Association of Counties, National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors, National League of Cities, Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities, Unify.US, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

    U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed deep unhappiness at Russia’s weekend bombing of Ukraine, saying of Russian President Vladimir Putin, “I’m not happy with Putin.”
     
    “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him? Right? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that,” Trump told reporters at the airport in Morristown, New Jersey, as he prepared to return to Washington.
     
    Trump spoke in reaction to a Russian barrage of 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities overnight on Sunday, including the capital Kyiv, in the largest aerial attack of the war so far, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more.
     
    Trump has been trying to get both sides to agree to a ceasefire in the three-year-old war in Ukraine and he spoke for more than two hours with Putin last week.
     
    He raised the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Russia in response to the ongoing attacks.
     
    “Always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all,” Trump said.

  • Heavy rain batters Mumbai; IMD issues alerts for more showers

    Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai on Monday, marking the arrival of the monsoon season, with visuals from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) capturing the downpour. Several areas across the city recorded substantial rainfall, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

    In the western suburbs, Supari Tank and Nariyalwadi Santacruz received the highest rainfall at 25 mm, followed by Khar Danda Pali Hill with 24 mm. Other notable readings included 18 mm at the HE Ward Office, 16 mm at the HW Ward Office, and 15 mm and 14 mm at the Vile Parle and Andheri Fire Stations, respectively. Chakal Municipal School and Malvani Fire Station reported 14 mm and 12 mm, while the Versova Pumping Station recorded 11 mm.

    In the eastern suburbs, Collector Colony in Chembur logged 13 mm of rainfall. The Chembur Fire Station and MW Ward Office followed with 9 mm each. In central Mumbai, Britania SWD and Sewri Koliwada received 12 mm, while the Gokhale Road Municipal School recorded 11 mm.

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD), via its official handle @Indiametdept, stated, “A moderate spell of rainfall is likely to continue over Kerala, coastal Maharashtra including Mumbai, south Jharkhand, north Uttar Pradesh, and Meghalaya during the next three hours.”

    Sunday night’s heavy showers led to waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai. In response, the IMD issued orange to red alerts for the city and its surrounding suburban areas, warning of potential weather-related risks.

    In a post on X, the IMD said, “Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue over Mumbai and suburban areas during the next 3-4 hours.” The department further added, “Orange to red colour warnings for moderate to heavy spells of rainfall, with moderate thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds of 50–60 kmph, have been issued for Mumbai and suburban areas for the next three hours.”

    Earlier, on May 23, Mumbai witnessed light showers with the IMD forecasting generally cloudy skies and heavy rainfall. “The city is likely to experience generally cloudy skies with heavy rain today,” the IMD had said.

    Meanwhile, in Thane district, heavy rainfall late Wednesday night caused severe damage to the Bhiwandi-Wada road, resulting in massive traffic congestion on Thursday. Large potholes created by the downpour, combined with ongoing road construction, slowed traffic significantly. The jam extended for nearly 7 to 8 kilometres, leaving many commuters stranded for more than four hours.

    Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday celebrated India’s ascent to becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy, crediting the achievement to the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014.

    Speaking at a “Mann Ki Baat” listening event in Assam’s Dibrugarh, Sonowal praised the Prime Minister’s monthly radio address for inspiring millions with stories of courage, innovation, and national pride.

    “Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has consistently inspired the citizens of the nation through transformative ideas and stories of courage from across the country,” Sonowal said. “Listening to today’s address once again left me inspired. The Prime Minister has urged all citizens to dedicate themselves to building a developed and self-reliant India. Under his leadership, India has emerged as the world’s fourth-largest economy.     The Dibrugarh MP also led a Tiranga Yatra in the city, organized to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor, India’s recent evacuation and rescue mission. He praised the bravery of the armed forces and reaffirmed the Modi government’s commitment to national security.

    During the Yatra, Sonowal also paused to engage with rickshaw pullers and labourers along the route, expressing gratitude for their contributions to society.

    “Shramiks are one of the key driving forces of our great nation. Meeting these hardworking individuals has always been a source of joy and inspiration for me. I thank them for their hard work towards the service of society.     Later in the day, Sonowal unveiled a full-sized statue of Matak monarch Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha Dev at Koilabari in Sadiya town. The unveiling ceremony drew widespread participation from community leaders, cultural figures, and local residents who came to pay homage to one of Assam’s most iconic rulers.

    Reflecting on the monarch’s legacy, Sonowal said: “The life and legacy of Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha Dev reflect a profound commitment to public service, justice, and the welfare of his people. His unwavering dedication to his motherland continues to inspire our national spirit. As we unveil this full-sized statue at Koilabari in Sadiya, I urge everyone – especially the younger generation – to draw strength from his ideals and dedicate themselves with sincerity and responsibility to the cause of nation-building. Let his example guide us in our collective journey toward a more just, united, and prosperous India.”

    External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday held a telephonic conversation with newly appointed Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. The two leaders discussed avenues to strengthen India-Canada relations.

    In a post on X, Jaishankar said: “Appreciate the telecon with FM Anita Anand of Canada. Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties. Wished her a very successful tenure.”

    Anand, who recently assumed office as Foreign Minister in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new government, reciprocated the sentiment, calling the exchange “productive” and expressing her intention to deepen cooperation with India.

    “Thank you, Minister S. Jaishankar, for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada-India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. I look forward to continuing our work together,” Anand posted on X.

    Relations between India and Canada have been strained after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani extremist and NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil in 2023—an accusation New Delhi rejected as “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

    Earlier this month, on May 14, Jaishankar had extended formal congratulations to Anand on her appointment. The congratulatory message followed the announcement of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new 38-member cabinet, which includes 28 ministers and 10 Secretaries of State.

  • PM Modi holds roadshow in Vadodara, kicks off two-day Gujarat visit to inaugurate key projects

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday led a vibrant roadshow in Gujarat’s Vadodara as part of his two-day visit to the state, where he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for several developmental projects aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic growth.
     
    During the roadshow, PM Modi was seen warmly interacting with enthusiastic crowds, waving to citizens who responded with cheers, chants of patriotic slogans, and waving the Indian flag. 
     
    Family members of Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who was part of media briefings during Operation Sindoor, were also present at the roadshow and welcomed the Prime Minister with flower petals.
     
    Following the roadshow, PM Modi is scheduled to travel to Dahod to inaugurate a locomotive manufacturing plant of Indian Railways. The facility will produce 9,000 HP electric locomotives for domestic use and exports. Designed for energy efficiency and equipped with regenerative braking systems, these locomotives are expected to boost the freight capacity of Indian Railways and contribute to sustainable transport.
     
    The Prime Minister will also flag off two new train services — the Vande Bharat Express between Veraval and Ahmedabad, and an express train between Valsad and Dahod. In addition, he will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects in Dahod worth around ₹24,000 crore. A public function will also be held during his visit.
     
    Later, PM Modi will travel to Bhuj to launch and lay the foundation stone for various development projects valued at over ₹53,400 crore. These include major initiatives in the power sector, such as transmission projects to evacuate renewable energy from the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, expansion of the transmission network, and the setting up of an ultra-supercritical thermal power plant unit in Tapi. Other projects include port development at Kandla and infrastructure works in roads, solar power, and water supply across Gujarat.
     
    On May 27, the Prime Minister will be in Gandhinagar to participate in the celebration of 20 years of the Gujarat Urban Growth Story. He will also launch the Urban Development Year 2025 and address a public gathering on the occasion.

    When India unleashed Operation Sindoor in May 2025, the world watched its advanced missiles, drones, and stealth assets. But one of the most decisive factors in the success of this coordinated military operation was invisible — orbiting silently above the subcontinent. That asset was NavIC, India’s indigenous satellite navigation system.
     
    What is NavIC?
     
    NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), officially known as IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System), is India’s own satellite-based navigation system developed by ISRO. It provides accurate real-time positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information over India and up to 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders.
     
     
    Unlike GPS (U.S.), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (EU), or BeiDou (China), NavIC is controlled by India, providing full autonomy to armed forces even during global or regional conflicts. This is especially critical when access to foreign systems like GPS can be denied or degraded — as happened during the 1999 Kargil War.
     
    NavIC Satellite Constellation
     
    The NavIC system currently consists of 7 satellites in geostationary and geosynchronous orbits. They include:
     
    • – IRNSS-1A to IRNSS-1G – Launched between 2013–2016
    • – NVS-01 – Launched in May 2023, carrying an indigenous Rubidium atomic clock
    • – NVS-02 to NVS-05 – Scheduled between 2025–2027 to upgrade and expand coverage
     
    These satellites are equipped with dual-band signals (L5 and S-band). The L5 signal is encrypted for military use and is resistant to jamming and spoofing — critical in active combat zones.
     
    How NavIC Powered Operation Sindoor
     
    During the multi-day Operation Sindoor, India used NavIC across several layers of combat operations:
     
    • – Missile Guidance: BrahMos, Pralay, and loitering munitions like Nagastra-1 used NavIC coordinates for precise targeting.
    • – Drone Navigation: Swarm drones and long-range UAVs used NavIC for autonomous operations in jammed airspace.
    • – Troop Movement: Army units and special forces tracked each other using encrypted NavIC handhelds for night raids and laser-guided artillery strikes.
    • – Battle Damage Assessment: Integrated with RISAT radar satellites and Cartosat imaging, NavIC helped geolocate impact zones in real time.
     
    By relying entirely on its own satellite infrastructure, India ensured that no foreign power could restrict or distort battlefield intelligence or targeting systems.
     
    Strategic Advantages of NavIC
     
    India’s use of NavIC during Operation Sindoor demonstrated several critical advantages:
     
    • – Independence from U.S. GPS: India could strike deep without relying on any foreign-owned navigation signals.
    • – Encrypted Military Channel: Prevented Pakistani jamming or spoofing during missile and drone missions.
    • – Faster Signal Lock: NavIC provides higher accuracy over the Indian subcontinent than even GPS in some regions.
    • – Tactical Depth: With NavIC’s expansion to include NVS-class satellites, India aims to cover the Indian Ocean Region more comprehensively.
    Other Countries with Independent Navigation Systems
     
    Only a few nations operate fully autonomous satellite navigation systems:
     
    • – United States – GPS
    • – Russia – GLONASS
    • – European Union – Galileo
    • – China – BeiDou
    • – India – NavIC
     
    India is the only country in the developing world to deploy such a system, putting it in an elite club of space-faring nations with independent military-grade navigation capabilities.
     
    Looking Ahead
     
    India plans to expand NavIC’s reach globally in the next phase, with 11 satellites forming a broader IRNSS constellation. This will allow Indian defense systems, aircraft, naval ships, and space platforms to remain connected under an unbreakable, encrypted web of real-time data.
     
     
    From missile launchers to battlefield soldiers, NavIC ensured synchronization, survivability, and supremacy in Operation Sindoor — setting the tone for India’s future wars to be fought with precision on its own digital terrain.
     
    Futuristic Vision: NavIC as India’s Digital Warfare Backbone

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Locomotive Manufacturing Plant of Indian Railways in Dahod, Gujarat, marking a key step in boosting the country’s railway infrastructure and freight capabilities. He also flagged off the first electric locomotive produced at the facility.
     
    The Prime Minister was accompanied by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
     
    According to an official release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Dahod plant has been established in line with PM Modi’s vision of enhancing connectivity and building world-class travel infrastructure. The facility is equipped to manufacture 9,000 HP electric locomotives for both domestic use and export.
     
    These locomotives are expected to significantly increase Indian Railways’ freight loading capacity. They are also fitted with regenerative braking systems, which reduce energy consumption and contribute to environmental sustainability.
     
    Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various development projects worth over ₹24,000 crore in Dahod. These include key railway infrastructure works and multiple initiatives undertaken by the Government of Gujarat.     Guyana’s Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday extended strong support for India’s stance against terrorism during a meeting with an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in Berbice.

    The visit comes in the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor and the terror attack in Pahalgam. Both leaders condemned terrorism unequivocally, reaffirming Guyana’s long-standing ties with India.

    “There is a very good relationship between India and Guyana. Forty per cent of Guyana’s population is of Indian origin, and we share a relationship that spans over 150 years,” said Phillips. “Guyana condemns all acts of terrorism. We believe in peaceful coexistence and the observance of the rule of law.”

    He also welcomed Indian investments and stressed the importance of people-to-people contact in deepening bilateral ties.

    Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo echoed Phillips’ sentiments during his meeting with the delegation.

    “Guyana stands unequivocally with India. We are against terrorism in all its forms and believe perpetrators must be brought to justice,” Jagdeo said, adding that Guyana is keen to explore development collaborations with India in areas such as infrastructure, fintech, and agriculture.

    In a post on X, Shashi Tharoor noted that the delegation’s talks with Jagdeo extended beyond terrorism to encompass Guyana’s economic growth, development plans following the discovery of oil and gas, and the vast opportunities available to Indian companies.

    “Our conversation also spanned a range of topics relating to Guyana’s record-breaking 30% annual economic growth and development plans following the discovery of oil and gas. A large number of opportunities for Indian companies were mentioned, in sectors ranging from agriculture to telecoms, banking and highway development. Guyana is also experiencing labour shortages and would welcome Indian labour as well,” Tharoor wrote.

    BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, also part of the delegation, highlighted the strengthening economic engagement between India and Guyana, especially in infrastructure and energy sectors.

    “Many Indian companies are working in Guyana, employing thousands. We also met with representatives of many spiritual organisations like the Art Of Living, ISKCON and the Bramhakumaris. They serve as the spiritual and cultural anchor for the Indian community here,” Surya wrote on X.

    “Our delegation met with the Vice President of Guyana H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo and spoke to him on a wide range of issues, including India’s fight against terrorism. Mr. Jagdeo has served for 12 years as the President of Guyana and is one of the most respected leaders of the country. He was unequivocal in his condemnation of the Pahalgam attack and fully supported Operation Sindoor. VP also conveyed his keen interest in collaboration with India on key development projects in areas of infrastructure, energy, fin tech and agriculture. With Guyana finding new oil reserves and growing at a rapid pace of 30%, the opportunities for Indian businesses are immense,” he added.

    The all-party delegation includes MPs from across the political spectrum: Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar K Lata (BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), and Taranjit Singh Sandhu, former Indian Ambassador to the U.S.

    In April 2025, the value of total exports of goods increased by 14.7% over a year earlier to $434.5 billion, after a year-on-year increase by 18.5% in March 2025. Concurrently, the value of imports of goods increased by 15.8% over a year earlier to $450.5 billion in April 2025, after a year-on-year increase by 16.6% in March 2025. A visible trade deficit of $16.0 billion, equivalent to 3.6% of the value of imports of goods, was recorded in April 2025.
     
    For the first four months of 2025 as a whole, the value of total exports of goods increased by 11.9% over the same period in 2024. Concurrently, the value of imports of goods increased by 11.4%. A visible trade deficit of $96.9 billion, equivalent to 5.7% of the value of imports of goods, was recorded in the first four months of 2025.
     
    Comparing the three-month period ending April 2025 with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of total exports of goods increased by 13.8%. Meanwhile, the value of imports of goods increased by 12.6%.
     
    Analysis by country/territory
     
    Comparing April 2025 with April 2024, total exports to Asia as a whole grew by 20.8%. In this region, increases were registered in the values of total exports to some major destinations, in particular Malaysia (+61.5%), Vietnam (+48.3%), Taiwan (+24.1%), the mainland of China (the Mainland) (+23.0%) and India (+22.5%). On the other hand, a decrease was recorded in the value of total exports to Korea (-26.7%).
     
    Apart from destinations in Asia, decreases were registered in the values of total exports to some major destinations in other regions, in particular the Netherlands (-38.4%) and the United Kingdom (-24.1%). On the other hand, an increase was recorded in the value of total exports to Germany (+30.8%).
     
    Over the same period of comparison, increases were registered in the values of imports from most major suppliers, in particular Vietnam (+107.3%), the United Kingdom (+59.5%), Taiwan (+50.6%) and the Mainland (+14.8%). On the other hand, a decrease was recorded in the value of imports from Korea (-21.3%).
     
    For the first four months of 2025 as a whole, increases were registered in the values of total exports to some major destinations, in particular Vietnam (+63.7%), Taiwan (+36.3%) and the Mainland (+18.1%). On the other hand, a decrease was recorded in the value of total exports to the United Arab Emirates (-28.6%).
     
    Over the same period of comparison, increases were registered in the values of imports from some major suppliers, in particular Vietnam (+78.9%), the United Kingdom (+57.9%), Taiwan (+53.1%), Malaysia (+35.8%) and the Mainland (+6.9%). On the other hand, a decrease was recorded in the value of imports from Korea (-23.0%).
     
    Analysis by major commodity
     
    Comparing April 2025 with April 2024, increases were registered in the values of total exports of some principal commodity divisions, in particular “electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof” (by $33.5 billion or +18.7%) and “office machines and automatic data processing machines” (by $19.5 billion or +46.0%).
     
    Over the same period of comparison, increases were registered in the values of imports of some principal commodity divisions, in particular “electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof” (by $29.9 billion or +16.8%) and “office machines and automatic data processing machines” (by $19.5 billion or +67.1%).
     
    For the first four months of 2025 as a whole, increases were registered in the values of total exports of some principal commodity divisions, in particular “office machines and automatic data processing machines” (by $106.2 billion or +72.1%) and “electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof” (by $76.4 billion or +11.2%).
     
    Over the same period of comparison, increases were registered in the values of imports of some principal commodity divisions, in particular “office machines and automatic data processing machines” (by $94.2 billion or +84.7%) and “electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof” (by $82.4 billion or +12.3%).
     
    Commentary
     
    A Government spokesman said that the value of merchandise exports grew visibly by 14.7% in April over a year earlier. Exports to the Mainland and many other Asian markets grew visibly. Exports to the United States rose marginally, while exports to the European Union fell.
     
    Looking ahead, as international trade tensions have eased somewhat of late, the headwinds and uncertainties in the external environment have lessened to some extent. The sustained steady growth in the Mainland economy, together with Hong Kong’s proactive efforts in enhancing economic and trade ties with different markets, should help buttress trade performance. The Government will continue to closely monitor changes in the external environment and stay vigilant to the potential impacts brought about by shifts in trade policies.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a series of development projects in Dahod, Gujarat, collectively valued at ₹24,000 crore.
     
    The projects include critical railway infrastructure and several initiatives under the Gujarat government’s broader development agenda.
     
    Among the key announcements, PM Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat Express connecting Veraval and Ahmedabad, as well as a new express train linking Valsad and Dahod—moves expected to significantly enhance regional rail connectivity.
     
    Reflecting on his journey in office, PM Modi recalled May 26, 2014—the day he first assumed the role of Prime Minister.
     
    “In these years, I have dedicated myself to the nation. Decades-old shackles have been broken. The country has taken decisions that were once unimaginable and unprecedented. We have progressed across every sector,” he said.
     
    Highlighting India’s push toward self-reliance, he said, “Today, 140 crore citizens are working tirelessly to make India a Viksit Bharat. The demand of the times is that everything essential to national progress be manufactured in India.”
     
    He added, “India is rapidly advancing in manufacturing—whether producing goods for domestic needs or exporting ‘Made in India’ products globally, this momentum is strong and consistent.”
     
    The Prime Minister also emphasized India’s technological advancements. “Today, India not only manufactures the necessary technology for rail and metro systems but also exports it. Our Dahod is living proof of this progress.”
     
    Referring to the newly inaugurated electric locomotive manufacturing facility in Dahod, PM Modi said, “Three years ago, I laid the foundation stone. Some mocked it, calling it an election stunt. But today, we see the first electric locomotive manufactured and ready.”
     
    Earlier, he inaugurated the Loco Manufacturing Shop–Rolling Stock Workshop and flagged off the first electric locomotive produced at the facility, marking a major milestone for Indian Railways.
     
    Built at an investment of ₹20,000 crore, the Dahod locomotive manufacturing unit is now operational, just three years after its foundation was laid in 2022. The facility is designed to produce 120 electric locomotives annually, scalable up to 150 units depending on future demand.
     
    Under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Indian Railways plans to manufacture 1,200 electric locomotives at this facility over the next decade. Each 9,000-HP locomotive, aligned with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, will bear the tag ‘Manufactured in Dahod’. These high-powered engines can haul up to 4,600 tonnes of cargo and are intended for both domestic use and export.
     
    The Prime Minister will next travel to Bhuj to launch additional development projects worth over ₹53,400 crore. These include initiatives in Kandla Port, solar energy, power transmission, and road infrastructure.
     
    He will also unveil four drinking water supply schemes costing ₹181 crore, aimed at benefiting 4.62 lakh residents across 193 villages and one town in the Mahisagar and Dahod districts.
     
    PM Modi will also distribute cheques worth ₹3,300 crore to urban local bodies under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana.

  • Guidelines issued to hospitals as Delhi govt closely monitors Covid cases: CM Rekha Gupta

    With Delhi crossing the 100-mark in daily Covid-19 infections, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and has issued guidelines to all hospitals.
     
    Urging people not to panic, CM Gupta said, “Guidelines have been issued to all hospitals, and the government is closely monitoring the situation.”
     
    She further added that all state-run hospitals are equipped with the necessary facilities to manage the rise in cases.
     
    According to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Delhi has reported 104 active Covid-19 cases.
     
    “We have analysed the scenario, and there is no cause for panic,” Gupta reiterated.
     
    Last week, the Delhi government issued a Covid-19 advisory, directing hospitals to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen, essential medicines, and vaccines.
     
    All health institutions have also been instructed to send positive Covid-19 samples for genome sequencing to Lok Nayak Hospital.
     
    “The hospitals must ensure preparedness in terms of the availability of beds, oxygen, antibiotics, other drugs, and vaccines. All equipment such as ventilators, BiPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and PSA plants must be in functional condition,” the advisory stated.
     
    Health Minister Pankaj Singh said that the government is also verifying case details to determine whether the patients are Delhi residents or have a recent travel history.
     
    Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry reported 1,009 Covid-19 cases nationwide, with Kerala (430) and Maharashtra (209) recording the highest numbers. Seven deaths were also reported—four in Maharashtra, two in Kerala, and one in Karnataka.
     
    According to the latest data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the recent spike in cases is being driven by NB.1.8.1 and LF.7—sub-lineages of the JN.1 Covid variant.
     
    INSACOG, a network of 64 laboratories under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, identified one case of NB.1.8.1 in Tamil Nadu in April and four cases of LF.7 in Gujarat in May.
     
    Both NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are currently classified as Variants Under Monitoring (VUM) by the World Health Organization (WHO). A VUM indicates a SARS-CoV-2 variant that may require prioritized attention and further observation by public health authorities.

    Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday lauded the inauguration of a modern locomotive manufacturing plant in Dahod, Gujarat, calling it a transformative step that will redefine the city’s identity on the global stage.
     
    According to Vaishnaw, the facility will manufacture 9,000-horsepower electric locomotives, named “D Nine,” symbolising Dahod’s resurgence as a major railway production hub. The locomotives are expected to serve not only the Indian Railways network but also be exported globally.
     
    “When the world was run by steam engines, Dahod played a key role in railway production. But with the gradual replacement of these engines, Dahod’s economy was significantly impacted. In 2022, our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, decided that modern electric locomotives would be built in Dahod, and work began in 2023. Today, we have a state-of-the-art factory ready,” the Railway Minister said.
     
    “The 9,000-horsepower locomotives from Dahod will not only operate within India but will also be exported across the globe. This is not just an engine—it’s a running computer centre. It is high in quality, yet low in cost. Named ‘D Nine,’ meaning Dahod 9000, this factory will bring international recognition to Dahod. Prime Minister Modi has truly blessed this sacred land,” he added.
     
    Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the locomotive manufacturing plant of Indian Railways in Dahod, marking a major milestone in boosting the country’s railway infrastructure and freight capabilities.
     
    He also flagged off the first electric locomotive produced at the plant.
     
    According to an official release from the Prime Minister’s Office, the inauguration is part of PM Modi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing connectivity and developing world-class transport infrastructure. The Dahod facility will produce 9,000-horsepower electric locomotives for both domestic use and international export.

    The National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) on Monday commenced the 9th Capacity Building Programme for mid-career civil servants from Sri Lanka, aimed at strengthening their skills in digital governance and enhancing the effectiveness of public service delivery.

    Scheduled from May 26 to June 6, the two-week intensive training is hosting 40 officers serving in key administrative roles including Senior Assistants, Divisional Secretaries, and Deputy Directors. These participants represent vital ministries such as Public Administration, Defence, Health and Mass Media, and Education.

    Inaugurating the programme, Dr Surendra Kumar Bagde, IAS, Director General of NCGG, lauded the diverse representation of officers and highlighted its focus on strengthening digital governance capabilities.

    “This initiative is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge of India’s best practices in e-governance and to highlight the transformative role of technology in modern administration,” he said.

    Dr AP Singh, Associate Professor and Course Coordinator at NCGG, provided a detailed overview of the programme during the inaugural session. The training includes focused modules on critical themes such as the changing paradigms of governance, Aadhaar, digital payments in India, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), the Public Finance Management System (PFMS), cybersecurity and cyber fraud, and the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme (DILRMP).

    Participants will also undertake several field visits to gain hands-on exposure. These include visits to the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), the Computerised Land Record Centre in Uttarakhand, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), the PM Gati Shakti Anubhuti Kendra, the Election Commission of India, the National E-Governance Division, and the iconic Taj Mahal.

    Dr Bagde encouraged the Sri Lankan officers to actively participate and make the most of their interactions with mentors and subject experts throughout the programme.

    In May 2025, India stands as the fourth-largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan and trailing only the United States of America, China, and Germany.

    With a Gross Domestic Product of over four trillion dollars, the economic might of the nation is now evident to the world. In the last decade, India’s GDP has more than doubled. To put things in perspective, it took India more than 65 years to reach its first two trillion dollars, and only eleven years to add the next two.

    The economic upliftment of rural India has been integral to this leap. For decades, the countryside was plagued by issues of food, shelter, and clothing. However, in the last eleven years, these challenges have been addressed through precise and people-centric policymaking.

    While an array of welfare programmes tells a compelling story, the simplest policy moves have been most effective. For instance, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana has ensured an additional quota of foodgrains for more than 80 crore people. Before the Narendra Modi government took office, surplus foodgrains in government coffers were under contention, yet the previous government was unwilling to distribute them to those in need.

    Beyond welfare, this has had a significant economic impact. People in villages now have more disposable income, which they are using to buy consumer durables, processed foods, and foods with higher nutritional value. Aspirations are changing, and the success of the Mudra Yojana is a testament to this shift. No longer a liability, rural India is now an asset for a rising nation.

    Urban pockets are evolving as well. With every trillion dollars added to the economy, consumer demand is transforming. Earlier this month, Lego, one of the world’s largest toymakers, opened its first store in India in Gurugram, Haryana. Apple, the world’s leading technology company, is now embedded in urban markets, increasing its manufacturing volume and value within India.

    But India’s manufacturing story is not just about Apple; it encompasses millions of young and old entrepreneurs shifting to local production, moving beyond the role of traders. Near the Haryana border, in Delhi’s North-West district, lies Bawana, an example of this significant shift. The Prime Minister’s larger message of ‘Make in India, Make for India, and Make for the World’ has resonated with entrepreneurs here, who are leading the change.

    The greatest supplement to India’s growth over the last decade has been infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown an unprecedented commitment to infrastructure development, rivaling Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s.

    India’s infrastructure push over the last decade has been the most ambitious in any democracy in the past century. A simple litmus test is that every individual within a 50-kilometer radius can vouch for redevelopment and numerous greenfield infrastructure projects.

    These projects are empowering people in every state, enabling access to greater economic and employment opportunities. Projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridors, dormant under the previous government, are now instrumental in reducing export costs and enhancing the ease of doing business.

    In the northeastern part of the country, projects are opening new avenues for tourism and the regional economy. In the Himalayas, strategic infrastructure initiatives, from Arunachal Pradesh to Ladakh, are strengthening military capabilities.

    The government’s intent toward infrastructure is validated by its annual capital expenditure commitment. In recent years, the Centre has committed over Rs. 50 lakh crore to infrastructure development. This also serves as evidence of the government’s fiscal management, which has navigated the pandemic, the global supply chain crisis, and the Russia-Ukraine war. The focus has been on creating long-term assets to fuel economic growth.

    The dual impact of welfare and infrastructure is fostering a generation of job creators. These are citizens, born in the late 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, who are not seeking employment but creating it.

    This new generation is further empowered by the digitisation of the economy and the pan-India market it has opened. These include digital creators as well. Employing anywhere from two to two hundred professionals, these entrepreneurs are transforming the dynamics of the Indian job market.

    This is what makes India the largest free market in the world. Beyond geopolitical dynamics, the economic might of India’s market size cannot be underestimated. India’s market access alone can cripple foreign powers, as seen in 2020 when the government banned TikTok and in 2025 when it sent a stern message to Pakistan through Operation Sindoor. The world needs India more than India needs the world. That is the power of 140 crore people.

    India’s rise to the third-largest economy is certain and will occur before 2029. Then begins a long journey toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic centres, driven by its market and demography. If the last decade was about cementing the size of the economy, the next will witness sharp and steep progress in microeconomic fundamentals, from per capita income to changing expenditure dynamics.

    From being among the ‘Fragile Five’ in 2013, India has come a long way by 2025, ranking among the top five. The comeback has been remarkable, and the country retains the momentum to surge further ahead. In 2015, it was the story of an economy struggling to find its footing. In 2025, it is about an economy ready to rise like an albatross, and by 2035, the story will be of a ten-trillion-dollar economy, reclaiming its civilisational position in a brave new world.

    The all-party Indian parliamentary delegation led by Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Jha on Monday met Yun Ho-jung, Chairperson of the Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Korean National Assembly and think tanks and briefed them on Operation Sindoor, reiterating India’s firm zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

    The delegation asserted India’s position of making no distinction between terrorists and the country supporting them and sought South Korea’s support for bringing terrorist organisations, perpetrators, and financiers of terrorism to justice.

    Yun reaffirmed South Korea’s strong stand against terrorism, saying that any act of terrorism is unacceptable and cannot be justified, and that there should be no loss of innocent lives due to the same.

    Meanwhile, the delegation also interacted with think tanks and lawmakers in Seoul, conveying India’s strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism.

    The Indian Embassy said in a post on X, “The delegation apprised them about the heinous terrorist attack in Pehalgam and the subsequent precise, measured, responsible, and non-escalatory response made by India. They further reiterated India’s firm zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and made no distinction between terrorists and the country supporting them. They also highlighted India’s ‘No First Use Policy’ and rejection of any nuclear blackmail. They conveyed our resolute stance to respond firmly to any act of terrorism”.

    The Embassy added that the participating South Korean think tanks condemned the terrorist attack and extended their solidarity with India, as well as its zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. They also discussed ways in which India, South Korea and the international community can work together to combat terrorism.

    During the interactions, Jha asserted that members from both the ruling and opposition parties from India arrived in South Korea to apprise about the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack as part of the Operation Sindoor global outreach campaign.

    “The seven delegations are sent by the Government of India across the world to apprise what happened in Kashmir on April 22, when 26 innocent tourists were gunned down by terrorists in front of their families, segregated on religious lines. All terrorists came from Pakistan, who were trained and financed there, it happened earlier in the 2008 Mumbai attack,” Jha said.

    BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi drew a parallel between South Korea’s tensions with North Korea and the kind of conflict India has experienced with Pakistan, highlighting the terrorist activities.

    “You are having the same kind of war with North Korea that we are having with Pakistan,” she said.

    “What happened should not have happened. I must say, and I don’t believe I’m exaggerating or overstepping, that Pakistan is a habitual offender when it comes to terrorist activities. Since its creation in 1947–48, there has been a continuous series of terrorist actions aimed at destabilising India. They have tried repeatedly, though they have not succeeded. Our Prime Minister has talked about a ‘new normal’ and we solicit your support in this entire war against terrorism,” said Sarangi.

    Additionally, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee stated that Operation Sindoor on May 7 was carried out in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pak-trained terrorists.

    “Any support extended to Pakistan is effectively support for a terror organisation. Anyone endorsing or defending Pakistan’s actions is, in essence, backing terrorism. Why do I say this? I have compelling reasons. Take the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, for instance, an incident the world witnessed in horror. A total of 166 innocent people were killed by terrorists, including citizens from 26 different countries, not just India,” he said.

    “The prime accused, who was then arrested by the Indian law enforcement agencies, confessed that he was trained and raised in Pakistan. And when the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack was carried out, we expected Pakistan to do justice and bring the perpetrators to book. India waited patiently and eventually carried out the airstrikes on May 7 after waiting for 14 days. The airstrikes were carried out with such precision that India successfully destroyed nine terror infrastructures without endangering a single civilian life,” Banerjee added.

    The all-party delegation includes MPs from across the political spectrum: BJP MP Brij Lal, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Barittas, and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid.

    It is a part of India’s global diplomatic outreach campaign to highlight the significance of Operation Sindoor and India’s continued fight against Pak-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

    He emphasized that such attacks are not just assaults on individuals but direct challenges to all 140 crore Indians. In response, PM Modi said he gave full freedom to the Indian armed forces, who executed a historic operation that had not been seen in decades.
     
    “Nine major terror hubs across the border were identified and destroyed in just 22 minutes. Pakistan’s military tried to retaliate but was decisively defeated,” he said.
     
    Saluting the courage and dedication of the armed forces, PM Modi said, “I fulfilled my responsibility as the nation’s leader, and our jawans fulfilled theirs with unmatched bravery. I bow to their valour from this sacred land of Dahod.”
     
    The Prime Minister also underlined that the country born out of the partition has long pursued a hostile approach towards India, seeking to inflict harm through various means.     “A developed India can only be built when both our armed forces and our economy are strong. The government is committed to ensuring national security and economic growth go hand in hand,” he noted.
     
    The Prime Minister said it is a land of sacrifice and dedication. He spoke of Maharishi Dadhichi’s ultimate sacrifice on the banks of the Dudhimati River and how this region supported freedom fighter Tatya Tope in times of crisis. He also highlighted Mangarh Dham as a symbol of the sacrifices made by Govind Guru and hundreds of tribal warriors.
     
    PM Modi praised the people of Dahod for their resilience and commitment to progress. Referring to the newly inaugurated locomotive manufacturing plant, he said this is just a glimpse of the district’s potential.

    The Indian stock market ended Monday’s session in the green, with broad-based buying across sectors, led by gains in auto and IT stocks. Benchmark indices registered gains for the second consecutive session, reflecting improved investor sentiment.
     
    The BSE Sensex closed 455.37 points, or 0.56 per cent higher, at 82,176.45, while the NSE Nifty rose 148 points, or 0.60 per cent, to settle at 25,001.15.
     
    Sectorally, Nifty Auto and Nifty IT indices led the rally with a gain of one per cent each. Positive movement was also seen in metal, realty, media, energy, commodities, and PSE stocks.
     
    Midcap and smallcap indices continued their upward momentum. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 379.50 points (0.67%) to 57,067.25, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 added 64.45 points (0.37%) to close at 17,707.80.
     
    Global cues also played a role in the positive momentum. Market participants cited the US decision to consider extending the deadline for imposing higher tariffs on the European Union, along with a decline in the dollar index, as factors aiding domestic market recovery.
     
    Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said, “The early onset of the southwest monsoon and easing bond yields have improved investor appetite for riskier assets. Broader markets outperformed on expectations of improved rural consumption and stronger Q4 GDP, supported by robust corporate earnings.”
     
    On the currency front, the rupee appreciated by 24 paise to close at 85.09 against the US dollar, supported by a weaker dollar index, which fell to 98.93.
     
    Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities noted, “A series of key US economic data due this week, including Durable Goods Orders, FOMC Meeting Minutes, Q1 GDP, and the Core PCE Price Index, may keep USD-INR volatility elevated. The rupee is expected to trade within a range of 84.50 to 85.25 in the near term.”

He said, “Vadodara is rapidly advancing in aircraft manufacturing, with the Airbus assembly line inaugurated recently. The city is also home to India’s first Gati Shakti University. Savli has a major rail coach manufacturing facility, and now Dahod is manufacturing India’s most powerful 9,000-horsepower locomotives. These developments mark a proud moment for the nation.”
     
    He added that small and medium-scale industries across Godhra, Kalol, and Halol are also playing a vital role in Gujarat’s industrial growth. Envisioning the future of the region, he said, “From bicycles and motorcycles to railway engines and aircraft, this corridor will produce it all. Such a high-tech corridor is rare even on the global stage.”
     
    Reaffirming his government’s commitment to tribal welfare, the Prime Minister said that the development of tribal regions is essential for building a developed India. He noted that significant work has been carried out in the last 11 years to uplift tribal communities across the country.
     
    PM Modi said, “I have had the privilege of working extensively in Gujarat’s tribal areas, and that experience has shaped many national-level initiatives. There was a time when tribal children couldn’t even dream of studying science. Today, the tribal belt has access to quality education through ITIs, medical colleges, and two dedicated tribal universities.”
     
    He stated that the network of Eklavya Model Schools has been strengthened over the past decade to ensure better educational opportunities for tribal students, including several such schools now operating in Dahod.
     
    Referring to the ‘Dhartii Aaba Janjati Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan’, he said this is a historic initiative launched for the first time in independent India. He informed that the Central Government is investing nearly ₹80,000 crore in the program, aimed at transforming over 60,000 tribal villages by providing electricity, water, roads, schools, hospitals, and pucca houses.
     
    PM Modi said, “Our government is working for those who were long neglected. The PM Janman Yojana has been introduced to support particularly vulnerable tribal groups who have been deprived for decades. New infrastructure and job opportunities are being created to ensure inclusive development.”
     
    The Prime Minister also highlighted the launch of a national mission to eliminate sickle cell anemia in tribal communities, under which millions have already been screened.
     
    Speaking on regional transformation, PM Modi said that Dahod, once classified as a backward district, is now progressing rapidly as an Aspirational District. He remarked, “South Dahod once faced severe water scarcity. Today, thanks to hundreds of kilometers of new pipelines, Narmada water is reaching every home. Over the years, 11 lakh acres of land from Umargam to Ambaji have been brought under irrigation, easing the burden on tribal farmers.”

Peery has been Director of Web and Interactive Communications at University of California, Davis since 2020, where he was previously Web Applications Development/Web Designer from 2014 to 2020. He held multiple positions at Oregon State University from 2006 to 2013, including Researcher/Web Applications Developer and Graduate Research Assistant. Peery was a Staff Scientist at Woods Hole Group from 2001 to 2005. He earned a Master of Science degree in Physical Oceanography from Oregon State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Science from Texas A&M University at Galveston. This position does not require Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $150,348. Peery is registered without party preference. 

    Ramank Bharti, of Napa, has been appointed Director of Risk Management and Project Controls at the California High Speed Rail Authority. Bharti held multiple positions at ALSTOM Inc from 2004 to 2025, including Project Director, United States West Coast Services, Site Controller, Services North America, Region Controller, Controller, Budgeting and Reporting, and Work Package Controller. He was a Program Director at Transportation and Transit Associates from 2003 to 2004. Bharti was an MBA Intern at the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority from 2002 to 2003. He was a Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer at the North Eastern Railway from 1996 to 2001. Bharti was a Manager, Industrial Engineering at Diesel Component Works from 1992 to 1996. Bharti earned a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.     Kevin Parzych, of San Luis Obispo, has been appointed Chief of Primary Care Services at Atascadero State Hospital. Parzych has been Chief Medical Officer at Wilshire Health and Community Services since 2013 and Owner of Wilshire Connected Care and K Parzych a Medical Corp since 2017. He was Medical Director of Hospice at Good Shepard Homecare and Hospice from 2004 to 2013. Parzych was Owner of Parzych Family Practice from 2002 to 2013. Parzych earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Albany Medical College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Connecticut.     Madelynn McClain, of Sacramento, has been appointed Director of the Division of Administrative Services at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. McClain has been Assistant Deputy Director of the Division of Adult Institutions at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2024. McClain held several positions at the Department of General Services from 2023 to 2024, including Deputy Director of the Real Estate Services Division and Chief Financial Officer. She held several positions at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 2020 to 2023, including Deputy Director at the Office of Fiscal Services and Associate Director of the Budget Management Branch. McClain was a Principal Program Budget Analyst at the California Department of Finance from 2017 to 2020. She was a Judicial Fiscal Supervisor at the Judicial Council of California from 2015 to 2017. McClain was a Finance Budget Analyst at the Department of Finance from 2003 to 2015. This position requires Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $208,440. McClain is a Democrat.

    Raul Morales, of Visalia, has been appointed Warden at Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison. Morales has been Acting Warden at Substance Treatment Facility and State Prison since 2024. He was Acting Warden at Valley State Prison in 2024. He held several positions at Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison from 2001 to 2024, including Chief Deputy Warden, Associate Warden, Captain, Correctional Lieutenant, Correctional Sergeant, and Correctional Officer.   • Govt convenes stakeholders’ meet to curb ‘dark patterns’ on e-commerce platforms

    Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi will chair a high-level stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday to address growing concerns over “dark patterns”—deceptive design practices that manipulate consumer behavior on e-commerce platforms.

    Dark patterns refer to misleading user interface designs that trick consumers into making unintended decisions. These tactics undermine consumer trust, disrupt fair market practices, and pose a serious threat to the integrity of digital commerce.

    The Department of Consumer Affairs has identified 13 major types of dark patterns prevalent across e-commerce platforms. These include False Urgency, Basket Sneaking, Confirm Shaming, Forced action, Subscription trap, Interface interference, Bait and Switch, Drip Pricing, Disguised advertisement, Nagging, Trick question, Saas Billing, and Rogue Malwares.

    The meeting which also aims to explore more effective solutions to tackle the issue will witness participation from major e-commerce players across various sectors, including food (BigBasket, Swiggy, Zomato), travel (MakeMyTrip, Paytm, Ola, Yatra, Uber, EaseMyTrip, Clear Trip), cosmetics, pharmacy (1mg.com, Netmeds, Medika Bazaar), retail (Reliance Retail Limited), clothing, and electronics (Amazon, Flipkart, Apple). Other significant participants include Meta, IndiaMart, IndiGo Airlines, xigo, JUSTDIAL, ONDC, Thomas Cook, and WhatsApp.

    “Key industry organisations, as well as Voluntary Consumer Organisations (VCOs) and leading National Law Universities (NLUs) will also be active participants in this meeting. Their insights, research, and regulatory perspectives will provide valuable input into shaping robust and enforceable solutions,” the ministry said in a statement.

    The Department of Consumer Affairs emphasises that this extensive industry participation is crucial for advancing consumer rights and ensuring a transparent and trustworthy marketplace.
    Additionally, the Ministry is proactively working to curb these unfair trade practices, which erode consumer trust and distort fair market dynamics.

    In November 2023, the department issued comprehensive guidelines identifying 13 prominent dark patterns, such as False Urgency, Basket Sneaking, and Subscription Traps.

    Furthermore, the Department launched the Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon in 2023, leading to the development of three consumer protection apps in collaboration with IIT (BHU). The department has also been actively monitoring e-commerce platforms and conducting consumer awareness campaigns.

    The Ministry underscored that consumer protection and ease of doing business are complementary goals.

    This upcoming stakeholder meeting exemplifies the government’s participatory approach to governance, aiming to strengthen the regulatory ecosystem while promoting a level playing field for businesses. The focus remains on fostering a digital marketplace governed by fairness, transparency, and accountability, where consumer safety is paramount.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasized the transformative growth of India’s railway sector over the past decade, underscoring the expansion of metro services and the introduction of semi-high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express.
     
    Addressing a public event in Dahod, PM Modi announced the launch of a new Vande Bharat Express connecting Ahmedabad to Veraval, further strengthening connectivity in the state. He noted that Vande Bharat trains now run on nearly 70 routes across India, reflecting the country’s rapid strides in modern transport infrastructure.
     
    “The progress of India’s railways is directly linked to our technological advancements. Today, coaches and locomotives are manufactured domestically, reducing our dependence on imports,” the Prime Minister said.
     
    PM Modi stated that India has emerged as a global exporter of railway equipment, exporting metro coaches to Australia and train coaches to England, Saudi Arabia, and France. He also added that Mexico, Spain, Germany, and Italy are among the countries importing railway-related components from India.
     
    “Passenger coaches made in India are being used in Mozambique and Sri Lanka. Our locomotives are now reaching multiple countries, a testament to the growing strength of the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he said.
     
    The Prime Minister said that a strong railway network not only enhances passenger convenience but also accelerates industrial and agricultural growth. Highlighting Gujarat’s development, he said that several parts of the state, which earlier had only narrow-gauge and slow-moving trains, have now been brought into the mainstream with expanded connectivity.
     
    PM Modi announced the inauguration of new railway routes, including a key express service between Dahod and Valsad, which he said would greatly benefit the tribal regions of the state.
     
    Focusing on local development, the Prime Minister said the newly set-up rail factory in Dahod will manufacture 9,000-horsepower locomotives, some of the most powerful engines in India. He informed that each locomotive produced will carry the name ‘Dahod’, turning the city into a key manufacturing hub.
     
    “Hundreds of locomotives will be built here in the coming years, creating large-scale employment opportunities for local youth,” he said.
     
    He added that this development would also boost small-scale industries and MSMEs that supply railway components, paving the way for economic growth in surrounding regions.
     
    “This transformation will benefit not just factory workers but also farmers, livestock owners, shopkeepers, and laborers, ensuring inclusive economic progress,” the Prime Minister added.
