    ISLAMABAD, May 13 (Xinhua) — At least 40 civilians, including 15 children and seven women, were killed and 121 others were wounded in Indian missile strikes inside Pakistan last week, the Pakistani military said on Tuesday.

    In response, Pakistan’s armed forces launched an operation codenamed “Banyan-ul-Marsoos” (Lead-Covered Wall), according to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army.

    According to ISPR, 11 Pakistani armed forces personnel were killed and 78 others were injured while defending their homeland.

    The statement added that six of those killed were serving in the Pakistan Army and five in the Pakistan Air Force. –0–

    NEW DELHI, May 13 (Xinhua) — At least 14 people have died and six others have been hospitalized after drinking spurious alcohol in India’s northern Punjab state, officials said on Tuesday.

    The tragedy occurred in the Majitha area of the holy Sikh city of Amritsar.

  • South Africa name Rabada in World Test Championship final squad

    South Africa has included Kagiso Rabada in their squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s from June 11-15, following the fast bowler’s return from a suspension having tested positive for a banned substance.

    Rabada spent a month on the sidelines at the Indian Premier League after testing positive for a recreational drug at this year’s SA20 competition.

    He is likely to lead the fast-bowling attack with seamers Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi and Dane Paterson also in the squad. Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy are the two specialist spin options.

    Captain Temba Bavuma heads the list of batters along with Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham, while Kyle Verreynne is the specialist wicket-keeper in the squad.

    “Over the past 18 months, we’ve worked hard to build a competitive red-ball unit,” coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement from Cricket South Africa.

    “A key part of our success has been consistency in selection, and we’ve stuck with the core group of players who have been part of this WTC cycle. We’ve selected a balanced squad for the conditions we expect at Lord’s.”

    South Africa finished top of the WTC table to earn their place in the final. They will play a four-day warm-up fixture against Zimbabwe in Arundel from June 3-6.

  • Retail inflation drops to 3.16% in April 2025, lowest since July 2019

    India’s retail inflation eased further in April 2025, marking its lowest level in nearly six years. According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation stood at 3.16% in April, down from 3.34% in March 2025 and significantly lower than 4.83% recorded in April 2024.
     
    This decline of 18 basis points from March makes April’s inflation the lowest year-on-year reading since July 2019.
     
    The fall in overall inflation was primarily driven by a sharp decline in food prices. The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI)-based food inflation fell to 1.78% in April from 2.69% in March. This is the lowest food inflation since October 2021. The food price easing is largely attributed to lower inflation in vegetables, pulses, fruits, cereals, meat and fish, and personal care items.
     
    In rural areas, headline inflation fell to 2.92% from 3.25% in the previous month. Food inflation in these regions also moderated to 1.85%, down from 2.82%. Urban centres saw a more modest decline in overall inflation, with the April reading at 3.36% compared to 3.43% in March. However, urban food inflation saw a steeper drop to 1.64%, from 2.48% a month earlier.
     
    Among individual components, housing inflation in urban areas remained steady at 3.00%, while the education category saw prices rise by 4.13%, up from 3.98% in March. Health inflation remained largely unchanged at 4.25%. Transport and communication costs rose to 3.73% in April, compared to 3.36% in the previous month. The fuel and light category registered a sharp increase, rising to 2.92% from 1.42% in March.
     
    On a month-on-month basis, the combined CPI index rose by 0.31%, while the food index registered a decline of 0.15%, indicating falling prices in essential food items. Among major food components, vegetable prices fell by 10.98% year-on-year, while the prices of pulses and related products also declined. Fruit prices rose by 13.8%, and oils and fats registered a surge of 17.4%.
     
    The National Statistical Office (NSO) collected price data from 1,114 urban markets and 1,181 villages, ensuring full coverage in rural areas and nearly full coverage in urban locations. The usable data stood at 89.4% for rural and 92.3% for urban markets.
     
    The next CPI inflation data, for May 2025, is scheduled to be released on June 12.

    Andy Murray will no longer coach 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, with the pair’s high-profile partnership coming to an end after six months and no titles, the Briton’s team said on Tuesday.

    Djokovic appointed fellow former world number one Murray ahead of this year’s Australian Open, and the Serb said at the Qatar Open in February that he would continue working with Murray for an indefinite period.

    However, the partnership has come to an end as Djokovic looks to arrest a dip in form during the clay season atthe Geneva Open next week ahead of his quest for a fourth French Open title when Roland Garros gets underway on May 25.

    “Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months,” Murray said in a statement.

    “I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season.”

    Djokovic, who won 25 of his 36 matches against Murray, said he was grateful for his former rival’s hard work and support in their short spell together.

    “I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” Djokovic added.

    Djokovic reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January before injury ended his campaign. He made the Miami Open final in March, but his bid for a 100th tour-level title ended in a defeat by Jakub Mensik.

  • MP approves Rs. 47 crore plan to tackle human-elephant conflict

    In a decisive move to address the escalating human-elephant conflict in southern Madhya Pradesh, the state cabinet has approved a Rs.47 crore mitigation plan aimed at safeguarding both rural communities and wildlife.

    The initiative, cleared on Tuesday, focuses on regions where wild elephants frequently traverse forest corridors and enter farmlands, rural properties, and tribal settlements—often causing extensive crop damage, property loss, and posing threats to human lives.

    Announcing the plan, Urban Development Minister and government spokesperson Kailash Vijayvargiya said that local farmers and rural populations in elephant-prone zones will be trained to handle sudden elephant encounters. These training programs will equip them with techniques to safely deter elephants and minimize losses related to crops and livelihoods.

    Forest officials report that over 150 wild elephants regularly inhabit the Bandhavgarh and Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserves. Many migrate from neighbouring Chhattisgarh, often straying into human settlements and leading to increased risk of conflict.

    To tackle this, the state’s multi-pronged strategy will combine traditional deterrents with modern technology. Measures include chili-based barriers, citrus plantations, trip alarms, and bee-hive fences—proven low-cost methods that discourage elephants from approaching human habitats.#

    he Forest Department will lead the project, promoting coexistence through a mix of community engagement and technological solutions. These include radio bulletins, WhatsApp alerts, and a 24×7 control room to keep villagers informed about elephant movements and provide real-time guidance.

    In a forward-looking step, the plan also incorporates AI and satellite-based tracking systems to monitor elephant herds and issue early warnings to at-risk areas.

    The urgency of the situation was underlined by a tragic incident six months ago, when 11 elephants died after consuming fungus-infected Kodo crops—allegedly sown by local farmers. In retaliation, one elephant killed two people, sparking intense debate and prompting the government to fast-track mitigation efforts.

    Additional elephant presence has been confirmed in the forested zones of Rewa and Shahdol divisions, highlighting the need for proactive and sustained intervention across the state.

  • Ukraine’s Zelenskiy insists on face-to-face talks with Putin in Istanbul

    President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will only attend talks on Ukraine if Russia’s Vladimir Putin is also there, the Ukrainian leader’s top aide said on Tuesday, challenging the Kremlin to show it is genuine about seeking peace.
     
    U.S. President Donald Trump has offered to attend Thursday’s proposed meeting in Istanbul, which has become the focus of his attempts to end the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two. Putin has yet to say if he will take part.
     
    Both Russia and Ukraine have sought to show they are working towards peace after Trump prioritised ending the war, but they have yet to agree any clear path.
     
    Putin on Sunday proposed direct talks with Ukraine after ignoring a Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Trump then publicly told Zelenskiy to accept.
     
    “President Zelenskiy will not meet with any other Russian representative in Istanbul, except Putin,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told Reuters.
     
    His chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said Zelenskiy’s trip to Turkey showed Kyiv was ready for talks but repeated Ukraine’s stance that any negotiations must come after a ceasefire.
     
    “Our position is very principled and very strong,” Yermak said during a visit to Copenhagen.
     
    Moscow has not said if Putin will travel to Turkey.
     
    “We are committed to a serious search for ways of a long-term peaceful settlement,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday but would not comment further on the talks.
     
    Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, unleashing a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides. Most of Europe has rallied around Kyiv providing arms and financial aid, while Russia has turned to Iran and North Korea for support.
     
    Trump has demanded the two nations end the war, threatening to walk away from efforts to broker a peace deal unless there are clear signs of progress soon.
     
    TRUMP GOES TO TURKEY?
     
    If Zelenskiy and Putin, who make no secret of their mutual contempt, were to meet on Thursday it would be their first face-to-face meeting since December 2019.
     
    Trump, who is due to visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar this week, unexpectedlyoffered on Mondayto travel to Istanbul, which straddles the divide between Europe and Asia.
     
    “I was thinking about actually flying over there. There’s a possibility of it, I guess, if I think things can happen, but we’ve got to get it done,” Trump said before leaving for his second foreign trip since returning to the White House in January.
     
    “Don’t underestimate Thursday in Turkey,” he added.
     
    Following the offer, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the “way forward for a ceasefire” in Ukraine with his Ukrainian, British, French, Polish, German and EU counterparts.
     
    Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, meanwhile,held talks with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.

    Reuters reported last year that Putin was open to discussing a ceasefire with Trump, but that Moscow ruled out making any major territorial concessions and insists Kyiv abandon ambitions to join NATO.
     
    Ukraine has said it is ready for talks but a ceasefire is needed first, a position supported by its European allies.
     
    Kyiv wants robust security guarantees as part of any peace deal and rejects a Russian proposal for restrictions on the size of its military. Territorial issues could be discussed once a ceasefire is in place, it says.
     
    Putin has repeatedly referred to a 2022 deal which Russia and Ukraine negotiated shortly after the Russian invasion but never finalised.
     
    Under the draft agreement, a copy of which Reuters has reviewed, Ukraine should agree to permanent neutrality in return for international security guarantees from the five permanent U.N. Security Council members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
     
    Ukraine and its European allies have told Russia that it would have to accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Monday or face new sanctions. The Kremlin replied, saying it would not respond to ultimatums.
     
    France said on Monday European leaders, who met in Ukraine over the weekend, had asked the European Commission to put together new “massive” sanctions targeting Russia’s oil and financial sector if Russia failed to agree a ceasefire.
     
    Russia’s forces control just under a fifth of Ukraine, including all of Crimea, almost all of Luhansk, and more than 70% of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, according to Russian estimates. It also controls a sliver of Kharkiv region.
     
    Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the international affairs committee of the Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s parliament, told the Izvestia media outlet in remarks published on Tuesday that the talks between Moscow and Kyiv can move further than the 2022 negotiations.
     
    “If the Ukrainian delegation shows up at these talks with a mandate to abandon any ultimatums and look for common ground, I am sure that we could move forward,” he said.

  • Balanced growth possible when women lead, says Vice-President Dhankhar

    Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday emphasized that true empowerment lies not in distributing freebies or doles, but in equipping individuals to become self-reliant. Addressing members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) from Meghalaya in New Delhi, he said,

    “True empowerment is when people are hand-held and enabled to stand on their own. That brings inner strength, joy, satisfaction, and pride for families.”

    Highlighting the progress of the ‘Look East, Act East’ policy, the Vice-President called the Northeast “a jewel of India,” and described Meghalaya as a “heaven for tourists” blessed with rich natural beauty and cultural wealth.     Underscoring the role of women in inclusive development, the Vice-President stated,

  • Retail boom: India to add 16.6 million sq ft of new mall space by 2025-26

    India’s retail sector is witnessing a major transformation, with over 16.6 million square feet of new Grade A mall space expected to come up across top seven cities in 2025 and 2026, a new report said on Tuesday.

    This surge is being driven by rising consumer demand and strong momentum in retail leasing, marking what experts call a golden era for the sector, according to data compiled by Anarock Research.

    Hyderabad and Delhi-NCR will lead this supply boom, accounting for nearly 65 per cent of the upcoming mall space.

    This indicates a clear shift towards high-growth consumption centres in these cities.

    The expansion is part of a broader retail real estate pipeline that could see more than 40 million square feet of new retail space added across India by 2029.

    Anuj Kejriwal, CEO and MD of Anarock Retail, said that the push for more mall development is also due to a shortage of quality supply in recent years.

    “In 2022, top cities saw only 2.6 million sq. ft. of new supply, while leasing hit 3.2 million sq. ft. Similarly, in 2023, new supply was 5.3 million sq. ft., but leasing was even higher at 6.5 million sq. ft.,” he said.

    The supply shortfall became more pronounced in 2024, partly due to slower approval processes linked to general and state elections.

    “In that year, only 1.1 million sq. ft. of new mall space entered the market, while leasing demand remained steady at 6.5 million sq. ft,” Kejriwal mentioned.

    Despite the sudden influx of new space expected over the next two years, there are no immediate fears of oversupply.

    The report estimates over 12.6 million sq. ft. of mall leasing activity will take place across the top cities in 2025 and 2026.

    This reflects strong interest from both developers and retailers, buoyed by positive consumer sentiment and ongoing demand for organised retail space.

    One of the driving factors behind this demand is the entry of over 60 international retail brands into India in the last four years.

    These brands span fashion, electronics, lifestyle, and food and beverage categories, and they are actively seeking presence in high-footfall malls and high streets.

    As a result, mall vacancy rates, which peaked at 15.5 per cent in 2021, are expected to stabilise at around 8.2 per cent in 2025 and 8.5 per cent in 2026, said the report.

    The current retail growth wave is also spreading beyond major metro cities. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are becoming important retail destinations due to rising disposable incomes, better internet access, and growing ecommerce adoption.

    In fact, these smaller cities now account for a majority share of online shopping in India.

    The number of online shoppers in the country has grown from 140 million in 2020 to nearly 260 million in 2024 and is expected to hit 300 million by 2030 and 700 million by 2035, the report said.

    One of President Donald Trump’s most contentious policies – his attempt to restrict automatic birthright citizenship – arrives at the U.S. Supreme Court this week with an unusual twist: The justices may focus on something else entirely.

    Federal judges in Washington state, Massachusetts and Maryland issued orders blocking Trump’s January executive order nationwide, finding the directive likely violated language in the U.S. Constitution concerning citizenship for babies born in the United States.

    But through an emergency filing, Trump’s administration has focused the Supreme Court’s attention not on the legality of the action by the Republican president but rather on the permissibility of the actions by the three judges – whether federal judges should have the power to issue broad orders that block challenged polices on a nationwide, or “universal,” basis.

    The administration asked the court to narrow the injunctions to let the government enforce Trump’s directive – part of his hardline approach to immigration – to the greatest extent possible while the legal fight over the policy plays out.

    The court may do so “without considering the underlying merits” of Trump’s action, the administration asserted.

    That approach would set up the possibility of the court, which has as a 6-3 conservative majority, allowing broad enforcement of the policy without assessing whether or not it is legal.

    The matter came to the court on a compressed timeline and with minimal written briefing.

    The way the court is considering the case “seems quite strange,” said Alan Trammell, a professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Virginia, because “even though the substantive question of birthright citizenship technically isn’t before the court, it still looms large.”

    “It concerns one of the most important provisions of the Constitution and implicates a raging political debate,” Trammell said.

    Trump’s order, signed on his first day back in office, directed federal agencies to refuse to recognize the citizenship of U.S.-born children who do not have at least one parent who is an American citizen or lawful permanent resident.

    Trump’s order was challenged by Democratic attorneys general from 22 states as well as individual pregnant immigrants and advocacy groups. The plaintiffs have said the directive violates a right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868 and long has been understood to confer citizenship to virtually anyone born in the United States.

    Trammell noted that the administration has not contested whether the injunctions should have been issued, asking the justices only to scale back their nationwide effect to protect just the plaintiffs in the cases.

    “The situation would be very odd indeed if the court concluded that the plaintiffs’ view of the merits is correct, yet gave only the individual plaintiffs the benefit of that ruling,” Trammell said.

    ‘BIRTH TOURISM’

    The 14th Amendment states that all “persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”

    The administration contends that the 14th Amendment does not extend to immigrants who are in the country illegally or even to immigrants whose presence is lawful but temporary, such as university students or those on work visas.

    Automatic birthright citizenship does not reflect the best reading of the 14th Amendment and it encourages “birth tourism” by expectant mothers traveling the United States to give birth and secure citizenship for their children, the administration argued in court filings.

    At the Supreme Court, the administration has targeted only the universal scope of the injunctions, content to leave them in place to protect only the people who sued as well as the residents of the 22 states, assuming the Supreme Court finds that these states have the necessary legal standing to bring their cases. That outcome would let Trump’s order go into effect in the 28 states that did not sue, aside from any plaintiffs from those states.

    The Justice Department said the issuance of broad judicial injunctions has bedeviled administrations of both parties, Republican and Democratic, and must be urgently rectified by the Supreme Court. Trump himself on March 20 called the situation “toxic” and urged the Supreme Court to act.

    Since Trump returned to office, many of his numerous executive orders and other initiatives have been impeded by judges, including through universal injunctions.

    “The need for this court’s intervention has become urgent as universal injunctions have reached tsunami levels,” the Justice Department said in a written filing.

    If the justices agree to scale back the judicial blocks, it could lead to a nation geographically fractured between places where babies are born with automatic citizenship and places where they are not, the plaintiffs said.

    “An infant would be a United States citizen and full member of society if born in New Jersey, but a deportable noncitizen if born in Tennessee,” the plaintiffs in the Maryland case told the justices.

    IDAHO TRANSGENDER CASE

    The Justice Department has cited the Supreme Court’s action in a case last year to back up its request to narrow the injunctions. In that case, called Labrador v. Poe, Idaho asked the justices to let the state enforce a Republican-backed ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors after a federal judge blocked it as unconstitutional.

    The Supreme Court, over the dissent of its three liberal members, granted Idaho’s request that the statewide injunction be pared back to cover only the transgender plaintiffs who actually sued.

    The scope of an injunction is significant, the Justice Department told the Supreme Court, and ensuring that lower courts do not act beyond their limited judicial power “is just as critical as merits review,” meaning an assessment of an action’s legality.

    A Justice Department spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

    Some legal experts said the cases differ for numerous reasons. For instance, they said, the Idaho case involved one state, not a presidential executive order applying nationally.

    Even though the administration has made the dispute primarily about universal injunctions, some court observers have said the justices could decide to rule on the legality of Trump’s order anyway.

    It is unusual for the court “to be considering an emergency application in this context,” University of Chicago law professor William Baude said.

    “Because of that, we won’t know what the court is going to focus on until the oral arguments start,” Baude added.

    The UK Government’s drive to sell Brand Scotland around the world will get a boost with the launch of a new fund for overseas campaigns. 

    The Scottish Secretary, Ian Murray, is offering the UK’s international network grants of up to £20,000 for innovative and creative activities to market Scotland overseas. 

    One of Ian Murray’s priorities at the Scotland Office is Brand Scotland – promoting Scottish goods and services overseas and encouraging inward investment in Scotland. This is a key part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change.

    The US and India free trade agreements signed last week show just how popular Scottish products are overseas. The India deal slashed tariffs for Scotch – great news for our whisky producers who want to expand their overseas markets.

    This new fund will complement an extensive programme of overseas visits planned for Scotland Office ministers over the year, following on from Ian Murray’s recent successful trips to Norway, Malaysia, Singapore, Washington and New York.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated all students who successfully cleared the CBSE Class 10 and 12 Board Examinations, lauding their determination, discipline, and hard work.

    In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote,

    “Heartiest congratulations to everyone who has cleared the CBSE Class XII and X examinations! This is the outcome of your determination, discipline and hard work. Today is also a day to acknowledge the role played by parents, teachers, and all others who have contributed to this feat.”

  • CAR-T cell therapy linked to mild ‘brain fog’, stanford study finds

    While CAR-T cell therapy has shown promise in treating cancer, it may also lead to side effects such as “brain fog,” which includes forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating, according to a new study.
     
    CAR-T cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy in which a patient’s immune cells—T cells—are genetically engineered and infused back into the bloodstream to help recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively.
     
    The study, led by a team from Stanford University and published in the journal Cell, revealed that CAR-T cell therapy can cause mild cognitive impairments, independent of other cancer treatments.
     
    Notably, the underlying mechanism appears to be the same as that seen in cognitive impairments caused by chemotherapy and respiratory infections such as influenza and COVID-19.
     
    “CAR-T cell therapy is enormously promising. We are seeing long-term survivors after CAR-T cell treatment for aggressive cancers—patients who would otherwise not have survived,” said Michelle Monje, Professor of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at Stanford Medicine.
     
    “But we need to understand all its potential long-term effects, including this newly recognised syndrome of immunotherapy-related cognitive impairment, so we can develop treatments to address it,” Monje added.
     
    In the study, researchers induced tumours in mice—in the brain, blood, skin, and bone—to examine how tumor location and the immune response triggered by CAR-T cells influenced cognition.
     
    Standard cognitive tests, including object recognition and maze navigation, were used to evaluate the mice before and after treatment.
     
    The findings showed that mild cognitive impairment occurred in mice with cancers located inside the brain, spreading to the brain, and even in those with tumors completely outside the brain. The only group that did not show cognitive issues were mice with bone cancer that caused minimal inflammation beyond the immune activity of the CAR-T cells.
     
    The researchers identified the brain’s immune cells, called microglia, as central to this side effect.
     
    Importantly, the study also proposed strategies to reverse these cognitive effects. The researchers said medications targeting brain fog could support better recovery for patients undergoing cancer immunotherapies.

  • Heavy rainfall likely in Tamil Nadu from Wednesday: Weather department

    The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast a significant increase in rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu starting Wednesday, May 14, with heavy showers expected to lash districts along the Western Ghats and interior regions for at least three consecutive days.

    Until then, large parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to endure intense heat, with daytime temperatures remaining 2–3°C above normal. High humidity levels, especially in Chennai, are likely to add to public discomfort. A slight dip in temperatures is anticipated beginning Wednesday.

    On Monday, Madurai airport recorded the highest temperature in the State at 41°C, while Erode and Karur Paramathi also crossed the 40°C mark, reflecting the prevailing heatwave conditions across several districts.

    The RMC attributed the anticipated rainfall to pre-monsoon developments over the south Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

    According to B. Amudha, Head (Additional In-Charge), RMC Chennai, cloud formation is intensifying over the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, south Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which may trigger showers across Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala.

    Based on dynamic weather models, districts along the Western Ghats—including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai—are likely to experience heavy rainfall on May 14. Isolated showers may persist in Tirupattur and Krishnagiri through Thursday and Friday.

    The RMC has predicted scattered rainfall across the State till May 18, accompanied by occasional thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph in some regions.

    The Southwest Monsoon, expected to arrive over Kerala around May 27, is likely to further enhance rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu. Both cloud systems—over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal—will be closely monitored for signs of monsoon progression, Amudha added.

  • Three terrorists killed in J&K gunfight

    Three terrorists were killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with the joint forces in Keller area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district.

    Joint forces had launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the Shukroo Keller area of Shopian district after intelligence inputs said that a group of terrorists was hiding there.

    When challenged, the terrorists fired, after which an encounter started during which three terrorists were killed. The operation is continuing in the area, police said.

    The Indian Army, in a statement, said that based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Shoekal Keller, a search and destroy Operation was launched.

    During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire, and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists, it added.

    “Operation is in progress,” the Indian Army said.

  • CBSE class 10 results 2025 declared; girls lead once again with 95% pass rate

    In a swift move following the declaration of Class 12 results earlier in the day, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class 10 Board Exam results for 2025 on Tuesday.

    This year, an impressive 93.66% of over 23 lakh students cleared the examination, which was conducted at 7,837 centres across 26,675 affiliated schools in India and abroad.

    Girls once again outshone boys, registering a pass percentage of 95%, reaffirming a consistent trend of academic excellence among female students.

    Among regions, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, and Bengaluru emerged as top performers. Delhi secured the seventh position, while Guwahati ranked lowest in terms of pass percentage.

    Students can access their results via the official CBSE websites — cbse.gov.in, cbseresults.nic.in, and results.cbse.nic.in. Results are also available on DigiLocker, the UMANG app, and through IVRS.

    To facilitate access, CBSE has sent DigiLocker credentials via SMS to students’ registered mobile numbers, enabling them to download digitally verified mark sheets and certificates.

    To view their results, students must enter their roll number, admit card ID, school code, and date of birth. A minimum of 33% marks in each subject (both theory and practical) is required to pass. Students falling just short may be awarded grace marks in line with board policy.

    Earlier in the day, CBSE released Class 12 results, with a pass percentage of 88.39%, marking a 0.41% increase over last year.

    Supplementary examinations for both Classes 10 and 12 will be held in the first or second week of July 2025, based on the same syllabus as the main exams.

    In a notable reform, CBSE has implemented a Relative Grading system from the 2024–25 academic session, replacing the previous fixed grading scale. This new system evaluates students’ performance in relation to their peers, aimed at reducing academic pressure and unhealthy competition.

    The 2025 CBSE Board Exams, held between February 15 and April 4, saw participation from over 42 lakh students. Class 10 exams concluded on March 18, while Class 12 exams ended on April 4.

    CBSE remains India’s largest school examination board and the second-largest public examination system. It offers 204 subjects across Classes 10 and 12 and operates in countries ranging from Japan to Ghana.

    President of India, Droupadi Murmu, paid floral tributes to former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the occasion of his 121st birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

    Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed served as the fifth President of India from August 24, 1974, until his untimely demise on February 11, 1977. He was the second President of India to die in office, after Dr. Zakir Husain.

    Born in 1905, Ahmed pursued his education in Delhi and later at the University of Cambridge. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple, London. Upon returning to India, he practiced law in Lahore and subsequently in Guwahati.

    A committed freedom fighter, Ahmed actively participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 against British colonial rule. He later held several key positions in independent India and became a trusted associate of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

    During his presidency, he signed the proclamation of Emergency in 1975 following a meeting with Prime Minister Gandhi, one of the most significant and controversial moments in India’s constitutional history.

    President Murmu’s tribute today served as a reminder of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s contributions to India’s legal, political, and freedom movements.

    The Skolkovo Innovation Center is currently creating the first in Russia Video Game and Animation Cluster. It will unite all stages of content production and promotion — from training specialists to supporting Moscow studios in export activities.     Operation Sindoor was launched on 7 May in retaliation for a brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April, where 26 Indian tourists lost their lives.

    Speaking earlier, Director-General Air Operations, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, clarified that the objective of the operation was to neutralise terrorist elements and not to provoke hostilities with the Pakistani military or civilians.

    “Our fight is with the terrorists; it is not with the Pakistan military or Pakistani civilians. We are very clear in our targeting,” Air Marshal Bharti stated during a press briefing.

    He also underscored the effectiveness of India’s air defence and countermeasures.

    “Our counter-systems and trained air-defence operators are fully capable, and our indigenous capability has proved its worth. There is no need for excessive words—you have seen with your own eyes the consequences we have delivered,” he said.

    In his national address following the operation, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting national security at all costs.

    He added that Operation Sindoor follows in the footsteps of India’s previous strategic offensives—the surgical strikes and Balakot air strikes—and marks a new chapter in India’s assertive stance against terrorism.

    The Prime Minister also emphasized that India would make no distinction between terrorist groups and the governments that support or harbor them. He reiterated that the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, Border Security Force (BSF), and paramilitary forces remain in a heightened state of alert, ready to defend the nation against any future threats.

    India’s Major Ports have achieved unprecedented milestones in the financial year 2024-25, marking a landmark year for the country’s maritime sector. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways announced that total cargo handled by Major Ports rose to approximately 855 million tonnes, up from 819 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year, representing a significant annual growth rate of 4.3 percent.

    This growth in throughput highlights the robustness and scalability of Indian ports in managing rising trade demands. The increase was driven by a surge in container traffic, which grew by 10 percent, fertilizer cargo by 13 percent, POL (Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants) cargo by 3 percent, and miscellaneous commodities by 31 percent compared to FY 2023-24.

    Among the various categories of cargo handled, POL led with a volume of 254.5 million tonnes, accounting for 29.8 percent of the total. This was followed by container traffic at 193.5 million tonnes (22.6 percent), and coal at 186.6 million tonnes (21.8 percent), while other key commodities included iron ore, pellets, and fertilizers.

    In a first for the Indian maritime industry, the Paradip Port Authority (PPA) and Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) each crossed the 150-million-tonne threshold in cargo handling. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) also recorded an operational high by handling 7.3 million TEUs, an increase of 13.5 percent year-on-year, further cementing its role as a premier container handling hub.

    In line with its strategy for port-led development, the Ministry allocated 962 acres of port land in FY 2024-25, with an estimated value of ₹7,565 crore. This land is projected to attract investments worth ₹68,780 crore in future infrastructure and industrial projects. The private sector has played a crucial role in this growth, with Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investments tripling from ₹1,329 crore in FY 2022-23 to ₹3,986 crore in FY 2024-25.

    Operational efficiency at Major Ports has also seen a marked improvement. Pre-Berthing Detention (PBD) Time on port account improved by approximately 36 percent compared to the previous year. Financial performance was equally strong, with total income increasing by 8 percent to ₹24,203 crore, up from ₹22,468 crore in FY 2023-24. Operating surplus rose by 7 percent, reaching ₹12,314 crore.

    Reflecting on these achievements, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal expressed pride in the progress made. He credited the transformational leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the collective effort of the Ministry, port authorities, and stakeholders. The Minister emphasized that these milestones underscore the Ministry’s commitment to building sustainable, globally competitive ports that will power India’s future trade ambitions.

    Over the past decade, India’s Major Ports have recorded a remarkable trajectory of growth. From handling 581 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2014-15, volumes have increased to approximately 855 million tonnes in FY 2024-25, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 4 percent. Containerized cargo saw a notable 70 percent rise, growing from 7.9 million TEUs to 13.5 million TEUs over the same period. Traditional cargo segments such as coal, iron ore, fertilizers, and POL have also shown significant expansion.

    Productivity indicators reflect this decade-long transformation. Output per Ship Berth Day (OSBD) rose from 12,458 tonnes to 18,304 tonnes. Average Turnaround Time (TRT) improved by 48 percent, reducing from 96 hours to 49.5 hours. Pre-Berthing Detention Time decreased from 5.02 hours in FY 2014-15 to 3.8 hours in FY 2024-25, while idle time dropped from 23.1 percent to 16.3 percent, signaling enhanced operational discipline and asset utilization.

    Financially, the growth has been just as compelling. The total income of Major Ports more than doubled from ₹11,760 crore in FY 2014-15 to ₹24,203 crore in FY 2024-25, with a 10-year CAGR of 7.5 percent. The operating surplus nearly tripled during this period, driven by a 13 percent CAGR, while the operating ratio improved from 64.7 percent to 42.3 percent, underlining the ports’ growing financial sustainability.

  • CBSE class 12 results declared: 88.39% students pass, girls outperform boys once again

    The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the results for the Class 12 examinations on Tuesday, with a pass percentage of 88.39%, marking a marginal increase of 0.41% over last year.

    Girls once again outshone boys, recording a pass percentage of 91%, which is 5.94% higher than that of boys. The CBSE shared the official results and detailed statistics in a press release.

    This year, over 16 lakh students appeared for the Class 12 examinations, which were conducted from February 15 to April 4. Of these, more than 14 lakh students passed.

    Among all regions, Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) registered the highest pass percentage at 99.60%, while Prayagraj recorded the lowest, with around 80% students clearing the exam.

    The Class 10 exams concluded earlier on March 18, while both Class 10 and 12 exams were conducted daily from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM across 7,842 centres in India and 26 centres abroad. CBSE had implemented stringent measures to ensure the integrity and smooth conduct of the examinations.

    To maintain discipline at exam centres, CBSE mandated school uniforms for regular students and light-coloured attire for private candidates. Students were required to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time and read the question paper instructions carefully before attempting answers.

    The board also issued a list of prohibited items inside the exam hall, including mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, earphones, smartwatches, cameras, wallets, handbags, goggles, pouches, and unauthorized study materials. Food and beverages were not allowed, except for diabetic students with prior approval.

    To ease the travel burden on examination days, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in coordination with CISF, offered special facilitation measures. Students were given priority during frisking and ticketing, and additional staff were deployed at metro stations to assist during peak hours.

  • World’s first commercial-scale e-methanol plant opens in Denmark

    The world’s first commercial-scale e-methanol plant began operations in Denmark on Tuesday, with shipping giant Maersk set to buy part of the production as a low-emission fuel for its fleet of container ships.

    The shipping sector is under pressure to find new sources of fuel after a majority of countries gave their backing to measures to help meet the International Maritime Organization’s targets towards elimating carbon emissions by 2050.

    So far zero-emission shipping fuels, such as green ammonia and e-methanol, which are produced using renewable energy, have tended to be more expensive than conventional fuel largely because they are not produced at scale.

    Located in Kasso in southern Denmark, the new plant, which has cost an estimated 150 million euros ($167 million), will produce 42,000 metric tons, or 53 million litres, of e-methanol per year, its joint owners Denmark’s European Energy and Japan’s Mitsui 8031.T said.

    Maersk will be a major customer. It operates 13 dual-fuel methanol container vessels that can be powered with fuel oil and with e-methanol and has ordered another 13 of the vessels.

    It said, the plant’s annual production is enough to power one large 16,000 container vessel sailing between Asia and Europe.

    For the smaller Laura Maersk, the world’s first dual-fuel container ship, with a capacity of more than 2,100 twenty-foot equivalent units, requires only 3,600 tons of fuel per year.

    The Laura Maersk was scheduled to fuel near Kasso on Tuesday.

    Traditional methanol is typically produced from natural gas and coal.

    The Kasso plant will make e-methanol using renewable energy and CO2 captured from biogas plants and waste incineration.

    Maersk said one of the biggest challenges of switching to sustainable fuel was cost, and it is researching green fuel technologies and more efficient shipping to make the process cheaper.

    “When you look at the production from Kasso, it is of course just a literal drop in the ocean, so we need to scale up and we need to bring costs down,” Emil Vikjar-Andresen, head of European Energy’s Danish Power-to-X team, said in a webinar.

    In addition to its use in shipping, e-methanol can replace fossil methanol in plastic production, meaning it can supply other Danish companies.

    Drugmaker Novo Nordisk and toymaker Lego will use e-methanol from the plant for making injection pens and plastic bricks respectively.

    Excess heat generated from the e-methanol production will be used to heat 3,300 households in the local area.

    Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will review the implementation of central government schemes in Chhattisgarh during his visit to Raipur on Tuesday.

    According to an official release by the Ministry of Rural Development, the Union Minister will conduct the review meeting at the Naya Raipur Secretariat. Prior to the meeting, he will participate in a plantation drive on the Secretariat premises.

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will resume on May 17, following extensive consultations with the government, security agencies, and other key stakeholders. Matches will be held across six venues, culminating in the final on June 3.

    The season will restart at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

    The league was temporarily suspended due to escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, including missile and drone attacks from the latter, which were successfully thwarted by Indian forces.

    In the updated schedule, no matches will be held in Mohali or Dharamsala. The Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians match, previously relocated to Ahmedabad, will now be played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, on May 26.

    The playoffs will begin with Qualifier 1 on May 29, followed by the Eliminator on May 30, and Qualifier 2 on June 1. The final is scheduled for June 3, with the venues for the playoff stage to be announced later.

  • Ousted Bangladesh PM Hasina’s party barred from election as party registration suspended

    Bangladesh’s Election Commission has suspended the registration of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, effectively barring the party from contesting the next national elections.

    The move comes after the interim government of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, banned all activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act after days of protests.

    The government cited national security threats and an ongoing war crimes investigation against the party’s top leadership over deaths of hundreds of protesters.

    “With the home ministry’s ban on all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the party’s registration,” Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters late on Monday.

    Under Bangladesh’s electoral laws, a political party must be registered with the Election Commission to participate in national polls. The suspension means the Awami League — which led the country for more than 20 years — is now officially disqualified from contesting future elections unless the ban is lifted and the registration restored.

    The Election Commission also issued a directive prohibiting the party and its affiliates from conducting any political activities, including publications, media appearances, online and social media campaigns, processions, rallies, or conferences, until the International Crimes Tribunal completes its proceedings.

    Hasina, credited with turning around the economy but accused of human rights violations and the suppression of dissent, won a fourth straight term in 2024, but the poll was boycotted by the main opposition, whose top leaders were in jail or in exile.

    The country has seen rising tensions and protests in recent months, after deadly protests forced Hasina to flee to India in August 2024 and an interim government led by Yunus took charge.

    Yunus, who is not aligned to any party, has pledged reforms and said national elections could be delayed until 2026 and that he is not interested in running.

    Political parties, including former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have demanded an early poll and return to a democratically-elected government.

    The newly formed student-driven National Citizen Party, which emerged from last year’s uprising that toppled Hasina, wants polls only after reforms are implemented.

    The unrest began in July with student protests against public sector job quotas, but quickly morphed into one of the deadliest periods of political violence since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

    The Awami League, founded in 1949 and once revered for leading Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, has faced growing criticism in recent years over alleged authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights violations under Hasina’s leadership.
