It Is a paradigm shift in global perspective for the country as we target to generate 100 Gigawatt nuclear energy by 2047 which sends a huge message across the world: Dr. Jitendra Singh

Posted On: 01 FEB 2025 6:37PM by PIB Delhi

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh described Budget 2025 as a futuristic budget with a revolutionary and far reaching announcement to involve private players in the Nuclear sector. This announcement is going to startle the world, he said, and reflects the same  courage of conviction which PM Modi had demonstrated when he opened the Space sector to private sector and the outcomes were miraculous within a few years.

Speaking to a series of media channels here today, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the Union Budget 2025-25 reflects sensitivity of the Government at the Centre and also the futuristic vision of  Prime Minister Narendra Modi . While its  sensitivity is reflected in the middle class relief to taxpayer and other measures like Duty exemption on certain life saving drugs, its long term futuristic  vision is reflected in provisions like Nuclear Mission, Small Modular Reactors, Green Tech Mission , Centre of Excellence for AI, etc, he said.

It Is going to be a definitive  stride towards realizing Viksit Bharat @2047 and also going to raise India’s esteem in the global arena, the Minister said.

Dr. Jitendra Singh appreciated the Budget with its sensitivity to ease of living because of it’s a middle class-focused with a lot of tax-relieved and ease of business as well. Terming the Budget citizen-centric, the Union Minister said, it is comprehensively encompassing the synergy of technology and tradition.

The Minister referred to the Union Budget as very revolutionary with the bringing about an amendment in Atomic Energy Act in order to involve the private sector players something the Hon’ble Prime Minister had done a few years ago in the space sector. Dr. Singh further said, the Nuclear Energy Mission envisaged by the Prime Minister and announced by the Finance Minister is not only going to add value to India’s vibrant economy, not only carry onward a storehouse of green energy but also going to give us a lead ahead of several other countries in this arena. He, however, said, some of these aspects won’t give immediate dividends but will gradually percolate down our minds and in fact going to affect the entire world which are never per se expected from India.

Appreciating the Union Budget for stimulating a paradigm shift in the global perspective of the country in the arena of nuclear energy, Dr. Singh said, we are also laying the target of generating 100 Gigawatt nuclear energy by 2047 which sends a huge message across the world that India is no longer a follower and we are giving lead and paving the way for others to follow. He also said, even the farming sector is giving the edge of technology with Rs. 20,000 Crore allocation for Small Modular Reactors(SMRs) and commitment to realize a minimum of five(5) SMRs by 2033 and the initiative itself is again a futuristic area with scientific and technological support to the farmers.

The Union Minister said, additional Increase in startup support (Fund of Funds for startup FFS) by Rs. 10,000 Crore, provisions to install 50,000 more Atal Tinkering Labs in Government schools in the next five(5) years, to boost Maritime Development Fund with a corpus of Rs. 25,000 Crore and allocation of Rs. 20,000 Crore to boost Research and Development as well as  innovation will provide impetus to technology-led development for realization of Viksit Bharat@2047.

Dr. Jitendra Singh further said, PM Research Fellowship scheme which will provide an ecosystem of 10,000 fellowships over the next five years at top notch institutions like IITs and IISc. He said, the setting up of National Geospatial Mission will lead to develop foundational geospatial infrastructure and data. He also said, the government will use PM Gati Shakti to facilitate modernisation of land records, urban planning and design of infrastructure projects. He said, the Second Gene bank with 10 lakhs germ plasma lines will be set up for future Food and Nutritional Security and conservation support from genetic resources in both public and private sectors.

This Union Budget 2025-26 aims to initiate transformative reforms across six domains during the next five years and these will augment our growth potential and global competitiveness, said Union Minister for Power and housing and Urban Affairs  Shri Manohar Lal.  He added that out of the six domains the two are:  Power Sector and Urban Development.

The Budget 2025-26 represents a significant milestone for the power sector, ushering in transformative reforms that will drive India’s growth and pave the way for a secure, sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy future, said Union Minister for Power Shri Manohar Lal.

Shri Manohar Lal remarked that the government’s dedication to improving the financial and operational stability of electricity distribution companies, coupled with incentives for enhancing intra-state transmission capacity, will greatly boost the efficiency of the power sector.

He states that the announcement of fully exemption of  scrap of lithium-ion battery, Lead, Zinc and 12 more critical minerals from basic custom duty is also a welcome decision. This will help secure their availability for manufacturing of batteries in India and promote more jobs for our youth.  The budget also proposed to add 35 additional capital goods in exempted list for EV battery manufacturing for electric vehicles.

Commending the emphasis on nuclear energy, he stated that the vision to develop at least 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047 underscores India’s ambitious yet essential transition towards clean energy.

He further emphasized that the target of operationalizing at least five indigenously developed SMRs by 2033 will strengthen India’s energy security and solidify its leadership in advanced nuclear technology.

Union Minister for Power Shri Manohar Lal said that the focus on nuclear energy will strengthen the country’s power infrastructure and reduce dependence on conventional sources. This budget sets the stage for a resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy future, ensuring that India’s economic growth is powered by clean and reliable energy, he stated.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Text of Vice-President’s address at ICAI Annual Function at the World Forum of Accountants, New Delhi (Excerpts)

    Source: Government of India (2)

Posted On: 02 FEB 2025 8:51PM by PIB Delhi

I am extremely happy and delighted to be at this World Forum of Accountants. Greetings to everyone, those from the country and outside. This is a unique gathering that is bound to inspire, energise, and motivate not only me, but many others.

Chartered Accountant stands, not for Chartered Accountant, but credibility, ambassadors, change accelerators, and I would urge you to be conscience arbiters, ethical guardians, and bold decision makers. Friends, the theme of this year’s event, Accountability Meets Innovation for a Sustainable Planet, is of supreme contemporaneous relevance. India’s ancient wisdom, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam stands as a lighthouse illuminating humanity’s path through today’s twin challenges of climate crisis and technological disruptions.

This philosophy, anchored in our G20 motto, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ guides us and our collective journey towards sustainable solutions and unified global action. Our sacred earth, Dharti Mata, stands, distinguished audience, at a critical precipice.

The rivers once sacred now choke, forests fall silent, and toxic air strangles life itself. Peremptorily demanding, we unite Vedic sustainability with modern action before time runs out on humanity’s final chance to survive.

Friends, in today’s world, sustainability is not just a choice, it is an imperative. There is no other option. Businesses are increasingly being evaluated, not just on their financial performance, but also on the will of their social and environmental impact. It is soothing that building on its successful G20 leadership and Global Biofuels Alliance, India continues this vision at this World Forum of Accountants, thanks to your organisation.

Artificial intelligence emergence, or if you may call it onslaught, is no less than industrial revolution. The world is at the cusp of a change at a level unknown before. Artificial intelligence balances immense potential with critical challenges, data quality, ethics, regulations, bias, and transparency. Effective and efficient use of artificial intelligence requires organisations to walk the fine line between innovation and responsibility, guided by robust ethical frameworks and proactive leadership. If not tapped and regulated, artificial intelligence will emerge as a monster. Artificial intelligence landscape is suffering a paradigm shift by the moment.

Friends, let me first advert briefly to the state of the nation. India has had unparalleled remarkable economic rise and upsurge, infrastructure development, technology penetration, and deep digitisation in the last few years amongst large economies, its growth stands out. An environment of hope and possibility is all-pervasive. There has been a budget booster, and for me there has been a Kumbh booster, the two are coupled. Budget booster, particularly for taxpaying populace has generated radiance all around. My visit to Kumbh, an event of unparalleled consequence for humanity. When I took the holy dip, in an event that celestially occurs after 144 years, population beyond America had already visited the place.

Excellent management! I’m sure, World-level arrangements, you have noticed. It will be studied for many, how in such a small area, such a large human congregation has been taken care of. Reflecting India’s inclusivity, peace within us, there was a mishap but what stands out, the management thereof. The response was electric, nuclear. It was done in a moment. Health facilities, law and order facilities, helping hand facilities.

I, therefore, as an Indian, take pride that we as a nation have come of age where such human congregation, driven by commitment to religiosity, sublimity, spirituality, and our civilisational ethos, has come together and peacefully handling situations. I salute everyone associated with such kind of exemplary management.

Friends, a challenge to all of us. We allow some people to have microscopic approach to generate sensation, to get space when something happens. Ignoring the major achievements, I’m sure this distinguished group, which is unique, will take note of it and be on the watch out. Friends, our nation’s youth demographic component is global envy. Our median age is 28 for the U.S. it is 39 and China 40 but what is particularly of critical importance is, and what is heartening to note, that around 68% of the total chartered accountants in India, they are under 40. This global powerhouse, situated in the largest democracy on the planet, can effect wonders. I am optimistic you will do it.

Friends, I would be a little honest in my thought process sharing with you and this is underscored by my very strong belief that if I express myself before you, it will generate a dialogue. Expression and dialogue, both are essential to democracy. Once you understand my point, you will realise to what extent you can make the difference. While undoubtedly affirmative and innovative governance policies are enabling for expanding potential and talent, hand-holding is essential to get human resources out of silos and grooves they have long believed in.

Youth has to look beyond government jobs as therein lies a goldmine for them. Friends, so is also true of industry, commerce, business and trade. You will appreciate a discerning audience, International Monetary Fund has accoladed India as the favourite global destination of investment and opportunity. Friends, surely it is not premised on government jobs, something else. Friends, you as a distinguished category of professionals having deep connect with those who control economy. You can wisen people and youth in particular that there are growing vistas for you where the youth gets to be involved.

They have to look beyond government jobs and that is something which can emanate from your side. In such a scenario, those in executive governance, parliamentarians, bureaucracy, business tycoons and managers, professionals in all fields have to rise and they have to rise to make aware to our youth, to our entrepreneurs, opportunity basket that is available for them. Our youth, our entrepreneurs can optimally contribute towards national development. If they come to know of new vistas where they can really contribute. For instance, let me tell you, blue economy, space economy have enormous potential. For the youth, number of avenues are available. They have to get into the groove of change, get out of silos.

Friends, without adverting more, since I am frankly communicating with you, without adverting more, without elaborating, I dare assert each segment, the professionals, the parliamentarian, those in business and the like, have enough to reflect, soul search and resolve to be in correctional mode sooner than later so as to act in this direction. Friends, in last decade, a big change has taken place in the mindset of the people. People have tested development at all levels. What was beyond belief, amenities as toilet, gas connections, electricity, and ongoing pipe water schemes in all rural households, this has had transformative impact.

Internet connectivity and smartphones have generated a particular climate of participation in all spheres, including governance. The people have now got into aspirational mode. This aspirational mode is premised that in last decade, no nation has progressed as much on development aspect as Bharat. So when people taste development, they want more. This has converted one-sixth of humanity as most aspirational population and therefore, this discerning, demanding populace is an asset but it is also a challenge. If it is restive, it is ticking time bomb. If energy is channelised, it is no less than nuclear power. I strongly feel bodies like yours have capacity to convert youth dividend into nuclear power and keep it away from restive temperament. After some analysis of the budget proposals yesterday, you are experts. I analysed it and I found there is all around joy, hope, and expectation of delivery.

In such a scenario, keeping the principle of nation ever first, as a prestigious organisation like yours, you ought to fire on all cylinders to contribute to the attainment of a developed nation at 2047. Viksit Bharat at 2047 is no longer a dream, it is our destination. We will accomplish it in 2047 when we celebrate centenary of our independence, if not before. But for that, you all will have been overdrive.

Friends, assured of your indulgence, assured of your consideration, and fully assured that you will not misunderstand me, I seek to assert that the chartered accountants fraternity will have to walk the talk. Soul searching will make you realise that your potential still remains untapped. If you fully exploit your potential, the results for the nation will be geometric.

Friends, I am venturing into troubled waters to so indicate, as I trust your deep sense of understanding and also alive to your potential as a class to fuel research, innovation, ethical governance, and promote venturing into new economic vistas of artificial intelligence, blue and space economies of the kind.

Friends, I am deeply concerned when I notice that when balance sheets shine premised on avoidable imports, finances blossom on raw material exports, the national economy bleeds as there is avoidable drain of foreign exchange, loss of employment, and impeding of entrepreneurial growth. There is need, and this need you alone can satisfy. There is need to imbibe the spirit of economic nationalism, as a distinguished class, chartered accountants are immediately positioned and suited to propagate and nurture the spirit of nationalism.

Such an approach will be highly beneficial to the economy and save us billions in foreign exchange, billions of dollars, and create millions of jobs and account for growth of entrepreneurship. Bharat is home to one-sixth of humanity, it is gifted with human resource that is invaluable. Time has come for us to emerge a global leader in accounting profession. No one doubts your talent, no one doubts your potential but at global level, our chartered accountant outfits have to emerge. They have to occupy the space which is yours.

I appeal to all concerned also in the government, to be proactive so that our chartered accountants as individuals or in conglomerates occupy global space. It’s a matter of concern that on those front, there seems to be no moment in as much as we are yet to be liberated on the home front. I want our firms, homegrown firms, to occupy a place of pride, and that is need of the times and also the challenges including data privacy we suffer.

Arthashastra by Chanakya is a treatise of foundation for economic thought. We need to propagate this legacy and our firms must be amongst the top names in the world. All concerned, I appeal, must converge to secure this, and I’m sure the Institute will take proactive steps.

Friends as a nation, and with civilisational history of thousands of years, and getting knowledge from our ethos, we can confidently assert to the world that adherence to the highest standards of ethics, property, and propriety are the ones that we have followed all throughout. When it comes to your profession, a profession that is unique because it is a repository of trust of people, unqualified trust, unqualified belief, and therefore I call upon you to maintain and exemplify scrupulously highest ethical standards because for your profession that is minimal requirement. There can be no human lapse than betrayal of trust. You are a repository of that.

Friends, I come from a stream of legal profession. Like your profession, we also have self-regulation. I would therefore urge placatory stance at your end is fraught with severe consequences when there are transgressions in law. We must take all care and caution to see that we are not afflicted by ingratiating with our fraternal feelings or taking care because they belong to our fraternity.

As an institution and as a class, you will be beacon of hope and trust to everyone once your disciplinary prescriptions are adhered to in exemplary manner.

Friends, I earnestly appeal to you to realise and amplify your potential and potency to effect transformative change in economy and commerce. Set global benchmarks in transparency, accountability, and ethical standards. Be torchbearers of the change in your sector. Budget boost beacons you to add taxpayers and achieve higher formal economy. We have graduated into formal economy but now is the time for professionals in your category to contribute massively to see that more and more people contribute to national development by coming in tax net. As the architects of economic stability, watchdogs of financial integrity, and guardians of fiscal discipline, you are particularly enjoined to contribute optimally for nation’s march to unprecedented growth and prosperity.

We are living in times when influencers in various walks of life matter hugely but as a class, you are the most potent influencers for transformative change in economy. There is no other class other than chartered accountants who can bring about revolutionary positive change in business ethics, business promotion. Your unique position at the intersection of business, finance, and governance enables you to bring about, catalyse reforms from the grassroots to the highest corporate achievements. You have the potential to be nerve centre for big change to contribute to our economy.

A challenge to be a developed nation has to be understood at your level. A developed nation status, you know more than I do, is not as such defined, but certain global parameters can be called out and that, in my modest understanding of economics, means our per capita income has to rise eightfold. A daunting challenge, but achievable. Let us keep that in mind.

Friends, as guardians of upright governance, your role transcends mere compliance. You are the conscious keepers of corporate India, wielding the power to shape ethical business practises and ensure transparent operations that build trust in our financial system. Your profession must emerge as harbinger of innovation, leading industry and business into new frontiers. Your expertise in financial structuring, risk management, and which is occurring very frequently now, and strategic planning positions you perfectly to guide businesses, industry, commerce, and organisations through technological transformations and sustainable growth initiatives.

I firmly believe, and I’m sure nobody will disagree with me, if chartered accountants are first responders to transgression of law and ethics in any form, this will herald needed exit of malpractices. No malpractices can flourish if chartered accountants are so determined. I need not reflect in detail, but you are aware, placatory positioning of one of the world’s largest chartered accountants firm led to its exit from the radar, that’s a lesson to one and all.

Friends, may you as a class get positioned at global level, befitting the largest, oldest, and most functional democracy in the land that has over 5,000 years of unparalleled civilisational and cultural heritage. Time is now, Time is ripe. Several steps will have to be taken by regulators in our country as well, by the CAG, by the RBI, and by the Ministry of Finance. Get in communication with them as a body. Make your suggestions. Lay bare your intent and I would want, as I dream, Indian accountancy and consultancy firms dominating not only the national scene, but also global scene.

Friends, I’m sure the deliberations would have been highly productive and fruitful, particularly the young professionals. I’m addressing young professionals. You are the most impactful, powerful stakeholder in economy, in democracy, in shaping the future of Bharat. You are required to fire on all cylinders, contribute optimally to the Marathon March which the nation is having for Viksit Bharat at 2047. I have no doubt in your capacity.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Canada-U.S. tariff war: How it will impact different products and industries

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Sylvanus Kwaku Afesorgbor, Associate Professor of Agri-Food Trade and Policy, University of Guelph

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on most Canadian goods. A senior governmental official said they are expected to come into effect on Feb. 4.

This tariff will have significant economic consequences on both sides of the border, as the U.S. and Canada share one of the largest bilateral trade relationships in the world.

A key concern is the highly integrated supply chains between the two countries. Many goods cross the border multiple times as intermediate inputs before becoming final products. Imposing tariffs at any point in this supply chain will raise production costs and increase prices for a wide range of goods traded between the U.S. and Canada.

For Canada, the tariffs on Canadian products will significantly affect Canada’s competitiveness in the U.S. market by driving up prices. Such tariffs could pose serious challenges for various sectors in Canada, given the country’s heavy reliance on the U.S. economy.

    Effects on different sectors

The impact of U.S. tariffs on Canadian prices is likely to differ across sectors and products, depending on their reliance on the U.S. market.

Sectors with a higher dependence on U.S. trade are likely to experience more severe disruptions. If the tariffs make certain products uncompetitive, Canadian producers may struggle to secure alternative markets in the short term.

Industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and energy will experience varying degrees of impact. Energy products and motor vehicles, which represent Canada’s largest exports to the U.S., are expected to be among the most adversely affected.

In the agricultural and forestry sector, wood and paper products, along with cereals, are among Canada’s largest exports to the U.S., with the U.S. accounting for 86 to 96 per cent of these exports, according to data from the World Integrated Trade Solution.

In the energy and mineral sector, crude oil is Canada’s top export, reaching US$143 billion in 2023, with 90 per cent destined for the U.S. Given its critical role as Canada’s largest export across all sectors, it is not surprising that Trump has noted crude oil would subject to a lower tariff of 10 per cent.

    Canada’s dependence on U.S. trade

When examining the impact on different products, it’s not only the value of trade that matters, but also the share of trade. The share of trade indicates how reliant Canada is on the U.S. compared to other markets.

A high trade share with the U.S. suggests a product is particularly vulnerable to trade disruptions, as Canada depends heavily on the U.S. market for that product. Conversely, a lower share indicates that Canada has diversified suppliers, which reduces its dependence on the U.S.

Trump’s tariff threat could shake North American trade relations and upend agri-food trade

For instance, in 2023, Canada’s top exports to the U.S. included vehicles and parts, nuclear machinery and plastics, according to data from the World Integrated Trade Solution. The U.S. accounted for 93 per cent of vehicle and parts exports, 82 per cent of nuclear machinery exports, and 91 per cent of plastics exports.

This data highlights Canada’s extreme dependence on the U.S. market, making these industries within the manufacturing sector highly susceptible to the tariff. This could harm jobs in the manufacturing sector, which is vital to employment in Canada, providing jobs for over 1.8 million people.

Canada’s reliance on the U.S. is also evident in imports. In 2023, vehicle imports totalled US$92 billion, with the U.S. accounting for 58 per cent of that amount.

The dependence is also evident in the agri-food and forestry sector, where Canada heavily relies on U.S. imports. This suggests that retaliatory tariffs on agricultural goods from the U.S. could have a substantial impact on food prices in Canada.

    Retaliatory tariffs and inflationary pressures

Canada has announced it’s imposing $155 billion of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports in response. This could contribute to inflationary pressures within Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says this includes immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days’ time to “allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”

This will include tariffs on “everyday items such as American beer, wine and bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes,” and also on major consumer products like household appliances, furniture and sports equipment, and materials like lumber and plastics.

Given Canada’s significant dependence on U.S. imports, the retaliatory tariffs will raise the cost of American goods entering the country, further driving up consumer prices and exacerbating inflation.

In its latest policy rate announcement, the Bank of Canada warned of the severe economic consequences of Trump’s tariffs, highlighting their potential to reverse the current downward trend in inflation.

    What should Canada do now?

Canada must extend its economic diplomacy efforts beyond the Trump administration, engaging with the U.S. Congress and Senate to advocate for the reconsideration of tariffs on Canadian goods. The Canadian government should persist in leveraging this channel to push for a reversal of the tariffs. This kind of broader negotiation remains the most effective approach to mitigating trade tensions and ensuring stable economic relations with the U.S.

At the same time, Canada must reduce dependence on the U.S. market by adopting a comprehensive export diversification strategy. While the U.S. remains a convenient and accessible trade partner, expanding into emerging and developing markets would help mitigate risks and create more stable long-term trade opportunities.

    Read more:
Trump’s tariff threat is a sign that Canada should be diversifying beyond the U.S.

One effective way to achieve export diversification is by expanding free trade agreements (FTAs) with emerging and developing economies. Currently, Canada has 15 FTAs covering about 51 countries, but there is room for expansion. However, signing FTAs alone is insufficient; Canada must ensure these agreements translate into tangible trade growth with partner countries.

International politics is increasingly shaping global trade, making it imperative for Canada to proactively manage diplomatic and trade relations. In recent years, tensions have emerged with key partners such as China, India and Saudi Arabia. These countries could all become potential markets for Canadian products. Given that China is Canada’s second-largest export destination, there is significant potential to expand trade ties.

Additionally, countries like the United Arab Emirates present promising markets, particularly for agricultural products, as the UAE imports about 90 per cent of its food.

    Boosting innovation and productivity

Canada stands at a critical juncture in its trade relationship with the U.S. While diplomatic efforts remain essential to averting harmful tariffs, they cannot be the country’s only line of defence.

Boosting productivity is one of the most effective ways for Canada to improve its competitiveness in global markets. Canadian producers should prioritize innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and maintain a competitive edge, particularly as they seek to expand beyond the U.S.

In response to potential U.S. tariffs, the Canadian government should implement a bailout strategy to provide short-term relief and mitigate revenue losses to firms that will be mostly affected. Additionally, Canada should leverage its embassies and consulates worldwide to promote exports and help affected firms identify and access new market opportunities.

By doing this, Canada can position itself as a more self-reliant and competitive player in the global economy — one less vulnerable to shifting U.S. policies.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SCHUMER DELIVERS NEARLY $1.8 MILLION IN NEW FED FUNDING TO HELP CITY OF SHERRILL MODERNIZE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT NEW DEVELOPMENT AND LEGACY MANUFACTURING AT SILVER CITY INDUSTRIAL PARK IN…

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Charles E Schumer
After Securing $300,000+ From U.S. Economic Development Administration in 2020, Schumer Pushed For More To Cover Increased Project Costs And Has Now Secured Over $2M In Total Fed Investment
Senator Says Millions In Fed $$ To Upgrade Sherrill’s Electrical Infrastructure Is Key To Unlocking New Shovel-Ready Sites, Attracting New Commercial Development & Supporting New Growth At Legacy Manufacturing Companies In Oneida County
Schumer: Fed $$ Will Help Oneida County Power Commercial & Manufacturing Growth
U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced he is delivering $1,797,780 in new federal funding to help the City of Sherrill modernize the substation and electrical infrastructure servicing the Silver City Industrial Park, bringing the total federal investment to $2,103,780. The senator explained these critical infrastructure upgrades will help Oneida County and Mohawk Valley EDGE attract new businesses and jobs while continuing to support the growth and prosperity of legacy manufacturers like Sherrill Manufacturing and Briggs & Stratton.
“Bringing new companies to Oneida County starts with ensuring that Silver City Industrial Park is shovel-ready. I’m proud to deliver nearly $1.8 million in new federal funding to upgrade critical electrical infrastructure in the City of Sherrill so we can fuel new commercial investments and catalyze new growth at legacy manufacturing companies in the Mohawk Valley,” said Senator Schumer. “Across Upstate New York, we are seeing a resurgence in manufacturing with Micron’s historic $100+ billion investment in Clay and Wolfspeed’s investment in Marcy thanks to my bipartisan CHIPS & Science Law. The time to prepare for even more investment is now. This federal funding is an essential piece of the puzzle needed to modernize Sherrill’s electrical infrastructure so Silver City can be shovel-ready for businesses to move in and set up shop and legacy manufacturers can continue to grow and prosper in our community.”
Schumer previously helped secure $306,000 for the City of Sherrill’s Project Powerslam in 2020. Unfortunately, the estimated cost of the project more than quadrupled due to the increased cost of construction and labor in recent years, forcing the City to press pause on the project and seek additional funding. The senator pushed the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) for additional federal investment to make up the shortfall and get the project back on track. Schumer said this multi-million dollar strategic investment from the EDA will finally allow the City to upgrade its 50+-year-old “South” substation to provide more reliable, resilient power to Sherill’s business and residential community for decades to come and help pave the way for planned expansion at Silver City Industrial Park. As part of the agreement, the City of Sherrill will contribute approximately $500,000 in matching funds.
The upgraded electrical infrastructure will help provide the reliable power needed for continued growth at legacy manufacturing companies, specifically Sherrill Manufacturing, which is the only American manufacturer of flatware, and Briggs and Stratton, which is a lawn and garden equipment manufacturer. These companies have already brought millions in investments and hundreds of jobs to Oneida County, and the City of Sherrill hopes continued investment in its critical infrastructure will set the stage for these companies to keep growing and for new companies to locate alongside them.
“On behalf of the City of Sherrill, I would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Senator Chuck Schumer for his unwavering support and tireless advocacy in securing millions in Economic Development Administration funding for the City of Sherrill.  Alongside the Senator, I would also like to thank the incredible team at Mohawk Valley EDGE for their hard work and commitment throughout the grant process. This funding will play a pivotal role in upgrading our electric distribution substation, supporting not only the long-term sustainability of our power grid but also fostering continued growth and jobs in our region,” said Brandon Lovett, Sherill City Manager. “Thanks to extraordinary collaboration between the Senator, the incredible team at Mohawk Valley EDGE, and the Sherrill community, we are closer than ever before growth and advancement at the Silver City Industrial Park. This project will provide critical infrastructure to support recent growth at existing businesses from Briggs & Stratton to Sherrill Manufacturing, while also paving the way for new investment and economic development in the years to come.”
“Sherrill has seen tremendous industrial development success with companies like Sherrill Manufacturing, Upstate Stone, and Briggs & Stratton expanding in the Silver City Industrial Park, drawing significant attention to the area as a prime location for manufacturers,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. “Thanks to Senator Schumer’s leadership in securing this funding, we can modernize the city’s electrical infrastructure to further support our legacy manufacturers and fuel new investment. The benefit of municipal power in Sherrill is already a major incentive in an otherwise high-cost energy environment, and these upgrades will enhance reliability and capacity, ensuring the city remains a competitive and attractive hub for industry in Oneida County.”
“We at Sherrill Manufacturing and Liberty Tabletop are excited to hear about further investment to improve the infrastructure within the Silver City Industrial Park.  As our business continues to grow, updated and reliable infrastructure is critical to our success as the only manufacturer of flatware in the United States,” said Matthew A. Roberts, President and Co-Founder, Sherrill Manufacturing Inc. and Liberty Tabletop. “We would like to once again thank Senator Schumer for his dedication to assisting both legacy and new business in the Mohawk Valley and across New York State. His hard work and partnership will help to ensure that Sherrill, NY can truly continue to be the Silver City.”
Schumer has a long history of fighting for economic development in Oneida County and the Mohawk Valley. Last year, Schumer secured $500,000 for Brownfield’s Community-wide Assessment for MV EDGE to safely clean up and sustainably reuse contaminated properties across Oneida County and to position underused properties like the former St. Luke’s Campus for redevelopment. Last September, Schumer delivered nearly $13 million from his Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Oneida Indian Nation to install 50+ new electric fast charging stations in the Mohawk Valley. Last October, Schumer announced a $750 million federal investment in Wolfspeed from his bipartisan Chips & Science Law that will accelerate the company’s ongoing Mohawk Valley expansion and hiring of hundreds of good-paying jobs. In 2023, Schumer delivered $2 million to Mohawk Valley Community College to help create a new semiconductor and advanced manufacturing training center to give the Mohawk Valley workforce the skills and training they need to be prepared for future investment in economic development.
In December of last year, Schumer also announced that he successfully included in the reauthorization of the Economic Development Administration the bipartisan ONSHORE Act to surge more EDA resources into shovel-ready site development. Schumer was able to steer this reauthorization into law at the end of last year. Schumer’s provision creates a new grant program to support site development or expansion projects for manufacturing industries critical to national or economic security, all of which are modeled on the ONSHORE Act. Through this program, EDA will assist with site and utility readiness, workforce development, distribution, and logistics, to prepare strategic mega sites and regionally impactful sites across places like Upstate NY for new industrial investment. The EDA funding will place an emphasis on building up the workforce through training and other support as a key priority for attracting and scaling new employers at these industrial sites, providing new federal resources for the pressing priority of workforce development.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cantwell: Trump’s New Tariffs Will Drive Up Grocery & Gas Prices, Costs for American Manufacturers

    US Senate News:

Cantwell: Trump’s New Tariffs Will Drive Up Grocery & Gas Prices, Costs for American Manufacturers

WA consumers will pay the price as Trump chooses to tax goods from Canada and Mexico up to 25%, plus a 10% tax on goods from China

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Trump administration announced plans to impose a 25% tax on many goods imported into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tax on goods imported from China, a move that will likely increase prices for consumers across the country, particularly in Washington state.

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) – who serves as ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, as well as senior member of the Finance and Energy and Natural Resources Committees– issued the following statement:

“President Trump should not start trade wars that hurt American manufacturers, consumers, and farmers, especially when food prices and interest rates are so high. After two weeks in office and lots of executive orders, where are the administration’s ideas to lower costs for American families?  Let’s not put 25% tariffs that will increase consumer costs,” Sen. Cantwell said. “Canada and Mexico are already willing to partner with us to fight fentanyl and strengthen border security.  I hope the President will work with Congress on opening new markets, growing U.S. exports, and using the EXIM Bank to compete with China, instead of driving up prices at the grocery store and gas pump. I want an export strategy — one that maximizes opportunities to sell American products overseas.

Two out of every five jobs in the State of Washington are tied to trade and related industries. In 2023, Washington state imported $19.9 billion of goods from Canada – primarily oil, gas, lumber, and electrical power — making our northern neighbors Washington state’s largest trade partner.

Also in 2023, Washington state imported $1.7 billion in goods from Mexico, including motor vehicles, vehicle parts, and household appliances. All of these raw materials and goods will now be subject to a 25% tariff.

A 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico would add an estimated $144 billion a year to the cost of manufacturing in the United States.

Sen. Cantwell has been a champion for Washington state growers and exports. Agriculture and food manufacturing generate more than $21 billion per year and employ more than 171,000 people in the State of Washington. Small and family farms are key contributors, making up 89% and 94%, respectively, of Washington’s farms.

Sen. Cantwell was the leading voice in negotiations to end India’s 20% retaliatory tariff on American apples, which devastated Washington state’s apple exports. In September 2023, India ended its retaliatory tariffs on apples and pulse crops following several years of Sen. Cantwell’s advocacy.

In May 2023, Sen. Cantwell sent a letter urging the Biden Administration to help U.S. potato growers finally get approval to sell fresh potatoes in Japan. In June 2023, Sen. Cantwell hosted U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), then-chair of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, in Washington state for a forum with 30 local agricultural leaders in Wenatchee to discuss the Farm Bill.

In 2022, Sen. Cantwell spearheaded passage of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act, a law to crack down on skyrocketing international ocean shipping costs and ease supply chain backlogs that raise prices for consumers and make it harder for U.S. farmers and exporters to get their goods to the global market.

In August 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sen. Cantwell sent a letter to then-Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue requesting aid funds be distributed to wheat growers. In December 2018, Sen. Cantwell celebrated the passage of the Farm Bill, which included $500 million of assistance for farmers, including those who grow wheat.

In 2019, Sen. Cantwell helped secure a provision in the $16 billion USDA relief package, ensuring sweet cherry growers could access emergency funding to offset the impacts of tariffs and other market disruptions.

Guidance from the Secretary of Defense: “Identity Months Dead at DoD”

Our unity and purpose are instrumental to meeting the Department’s warfighting mission. Efforts to divide the force – to put one group ahead of another – erode camaraderie and threaten mission execution.

Going forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months, including National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month. Service members and civilians remain permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours.

Installations, units, and offices are encouraged to celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos. We are proud of our warriors and their history, but we will focus on the character of their service instead of their immutable characteristics.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Text of Vice-President’s address at the 3rd National Conference of Deaf-blind on ‘Advocacy for Education and Employment’ (Excerpts)

    Source: Government of India

I must share our joy, joy of myself and Dr Sudesh Dhankhar right from the time we came here. Our energy level has gone up. Our happiness has risen. We feel blessed to be at this place. I congratulate the Institute and others that have converged to hold this third national seminar on very important subject, Deaf-Blind on advocacy for education and employment. Education and employment, both are fundamental. Boys and Girls, loss of physical vision, I have seen can be compensated. But you have that vision which matters to us. When that vision is perverted, dangers emanate.

What I have seen here when there was an address, I was overwhelmed, not only by what I saw but the response thereof. My deep sense of gratitude to all those who have come together and thought leaders professionals, change makers to contribute to this great cause of humanity. This collective will generate inclusivity and compassion. Rights appreciation about those who are challenged or differently-abled is fundamental. They have enormous talent and potential. They have infinite capacity to contribute. They require some handholding. Let me remind you by quoting a couplet from our great epic Ramcharitmanas. The couplet is in Uttar kand “पर हित सरिस धर्म नहिं भाई। पर पीड़ा सम नहिं अधमाई॥“In translation it means it is ultimate religiosity. It is highest the Dharma, if you alleviate suffering of someone, if you minimise pain of someone, if you hand hold someone. And it is extreme painful irreligiousityअधर्म if you inflict some kind of pain in anybody. We must draw our lessons. Let all our actions be marked by empathy, compassion. I have no doubt that the enormous potential of the differently challenged or physically challenged whom the Prime Minister has rightly given a name Divyang. Divyang is expression of divinity. A greatest respect to human being. The nation will flourish with your participation. History is a proof that disability has not tamed human spirit. Human spirit that which is in you cannot be tamed, you can overcome daunting situations. Mountains have been climbed. Rivers have been crossed. Records have been set in Paralympics. I have had the good fortune to see in India International Paralympic Games.

The talent which is there in this group, the group before me is a source of inspiration and motivation for all who think they are abled because they have vision, they can hear, they can speak. As I said you are the gifted once with the real vision that vision is a precious jewel. Let me tell you the greatest scientist of our generation who changed understanding of physics, professor, Stephen Hawkins he was challenged and who does not know Helen Keller. She had difficulty in speaking and listening, but she turned out to be one of the greatest authors. I see all around Stephen Hawkins and Helen Kellers in our country. I have seen them myself. Our mission, therefore has to be very clear and that is in our Constitution. We have to provide a life of dignity, purpose and fulfilment. Fortunately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed in mission mode to serve the cause of Divyang.

He has got them in vote, in elections, in governance, in every walk of life. He has created policies that allow our Divyang to fully exploit their potential, their talent and realise their dreams. Let me tell you some of the schemes that make us proud, inclusive governance and Viksit Bharat is not possible without your participation. Democracy will be incomplete and suffer a great void without your satisfaction to use your talent. In 2016, as was indicated by our friend and the nation passed Rights of Person with disabilities. This was in 2016, the third year of Prime Minister‘s regime. The purpose was to facilitate their voting, special queues, voting from home, braille features on EVMs and numerous other initiatives. This has increased quality of participation in our democratic process. Election commission of India has gone a great length to enhance it. Reservation in education increased in premier institutions also from 3 to 5%. I am personally aware and delighted when a Divyang gets into Indian foreign service, Indian Administrative Service. Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre set up in 2015 and National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation in 2019 are steps in the right direction.

Centre for disability sports is being set up at Gwalior for specially abled citizens. Boys, and girls, Paralympics that are in four categories dealing with different disabilities are now global event in which Indian participation is getting glorified. Accessible India campaign, Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan launched in 2015, the result is all institutions. The infrastructure has to be friendly for Divyangjans. This as a matter of fact is a social responsibility which I am happy to note is being discharged by everyone.

We all need to converge to bring out the best in our divyangjan. This requires special educators, special curriculum and methodologies. It is time, we employ technology, artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, so that this very valuable category of human resource can optimally perform.

One of the most delightful moment which me and my wife, Dr. Sudesh had when we went to an autism school in Delhi, the school initiated by Rashmi Das. She took up the challenge in a passion mode, in a mission mode. She executed the project which is world class. It is there that I came to know that autism is a different kind of a challenge where you require a different kind of ecosystem. I have no doubt Rashmi Das Institute in Autism will soon be world class because we need to not only hand hold, emotionally hand hold. We need to give company to them. It is only a matter of time when we will find their touch of hand with us will convey energy to us. They will give us more than they will take from us.We need to be highly sensitive to their health requirements. We need to evolve a mechanism that engages in a system which is efficient, seamless, helpful, affirmative and productive for them. We must always ensure they must not have isolation. They must have company. That will be soothing either side. Sometimes they may require counseling, but who does not require counseling? And therefore, community engagement not with a sense of sympathy, but with a sense of empathy. Community engagement on a level playing field. Community engagement which allows them to express themselves in music, in art, in games, in sports and other aspects. I am sure all steps will be taken because government has provided futuristic affirmative policies to hand hold this category.

Our journey to build inclusive Bharat, developed Bharat, A Bharat of our dreams cannot fructify unless your dreams are satisfied. On your own, you are capable to catalyze your dreams but others should not come in the way. In this great effort, NGOs have a greater role to play. The role should not be cosmetic or surface scratching. The role must be achievement oriented. CSR funds must be committed for development of this category. Let each one of us contribute because each one of us has a role to play. As policymakers, we have two distinguished Parliamentarians and Deputy Chairmen of the Rajya Sabha here. Great role as policymakers, as educators, advocates, caregivers, or simply as compassionate human beings. Let us discharge this divine obligation and ensure that the world is a good place to live for our dear Divyangjans.

Let me conclude by a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: I quote, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Unquote. Let us dedicate ourselves to the service of those who look for us, who look us for support and solidarity, not sympathy.

On my own behalf and that of my wife, Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar I can assure you in our own way we will look for opportunities to contribute and will be in touch with this Institute.

I wish all of you a great future because no nation in the world has risen in last 10 years as Bharat has risen. The jump that Bharat has taken by economic upsurge, infrastructure growth, deep technological penetration, and improvement in the lives of ordinary people by toilet, by gas connection, by piped water, by connectivity of rail, road, air. And this makes our Bharat at the moment most aspirational country in the world that challenge requires every human resource in the country gets opportunity of expression, your expression and dialogue with you will define a sense of our civilization. Helping this category Divyang will turn out to be nectar for the persons who are doing it.

I am grateful. My best wishes to all of you.
