On 28 February 2024 Sydbank announced a share buyback programme of DKK 1,200m. The share buyback programme commenced on 4 March 2024 and will be completed by 31 January 2025.

The purpose of the share buyback programme is to reduce the share capital of Sydbank and the programme is executed in compliance with the provisions of Regulation (EU) No 596/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 April 2014 and Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/1052 of 8 March 2016, collectively referred to as the Safe Harbour rules.

Legislation to raise funds for fixing cladding issues.

Proposals for a tax on developers, aiming to raise funds to fix building safety issues in Scotland, have been published for public consultation.

Views are being sought on the proposed Scottish Building Safety Levy, which will be introduced under powers due to be devolved by the UK Government later this year. The consultation will open on 23 September and run for eight weeks, closing on 18 November.

The levy would apply to the construction of new residential buildings, mirroring measures being introduced in England through the UK Building Safety Act. Funds raised would support the Scottish Government’s cladding remediation programme.

Finance Secretary Shona Robison said:

“We are keen to hear from people across Scotland about our proposals, which would raise funds from developers to help safeguard people living in buildings with unsafe cladding.

“I know that developers share our determination to keep people safe and have continued to make significant progress. This legislation will build on that momentum, ensuring developers make a fair contribution to address building safety defects in Scotland, just as the UK Government is asking them to do in England.

“We are continuing our work in partnership with developers, in line with our New Deal for Business and Framework for Tax, to ensure this levy best contributes to our mission of keeping people safe.”

Thank you, Madam Vice President.

We regret that due to timetabling problems, the Commissioners could not be here this morning. If they had been, I would have thanked them for their latest report, which clearly highlights the horrific violations and abuses Syrians continue to endure.

Of all the horrors of this conflict, one of the greatest tragedies is of those forcibly detained and missing. As the Commissioners report, over 100,000 Syrians remain missing yet Syrian authorities continue to obstruct families’ efforts to find their loved ones.

The UK firmly supports families, survivors and victims in their quest for the truth. So, we commend efforts to operationalise the Independent Institution on Missing Persons and call for the swift appointment of its Assistant Secretary-General, so that it can help clarify the fate of those missing Syrians and support their long-suffering families.

The Assad regime must address the issue of the missing and cease arbitrary detention. The Syrian people need assurances on their safety and security, if they are ever to return home.

This Council must not, will not, turn its back on the Syrian people, and those responsible for the abuses and violations of human rights must, will be held to account.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is heading to New York this week for a series of meetings and events with global leaders to bang the drum for London as a place to invest, hold sporting events and promote the capital as an unrivalled destination for tourists.

Sadiq’s visit takes place during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, where business leaders, politicians and major organisations converge on New York to discuss global issues including delivering economic prosperity and tackling climate change.

During his visit Sadiq will promote London as an exceptional place to work and invest in, including meetings with Accordion, CLA Global, Salesforce and Thoropass. He will also use meetings to promote London as an unparalleled destination for sporting events and tourism.

The Mayor will speak at a number of high-profile events, including the Concordia Annual Summit, a global affairs forum that works to address the world’s most pressing needs, the Climate Pledge Summit and the NYC Climate Week Hub.

London faces stiff competition but is still the leading location globally for US businesses looking to expand overseas. Around 3.5 million visits were made between the US and London in 2023, surpassing pre-Pandemic levels by 12 per cent. While in New York the Mayor will also meet with senior sporting officials as he fulfils his pledge to explore bringing more sports from North America and around the world to our city. Students of the State University of Management took part in the Student Media Gathering “Our Values” in the Senezh Management Workshop, where they became finalists in the social video competition.

The gathering will take place from September 14 to 18, 2024. More than 150 representatives of student media from 25 regions of Russia, as well as guests from 16 countries, took part in it: Argentina, Vietnam, India, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Italy and others. The State University of Management was represented at the gathering by the head of the General Press SUM (GPS) media club Ekaterina Lavrova, deputy head of the media department of the IOM Student Council Valeria Lebert, and the head of the Garnet case club Larisa Sokolova.

The program of the event included lectures, master classes, cultural evenings and open dialogues with famous speakers, such as Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Konstantin Mogilevsky, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova, Head of the Media Monitoring and Analysis Department of the Press Service of the Federation Council Olga Anderson and others.

During the five days of the event, each team had a task – to create a social poster and a social video on one of the 17 topics prepared by the organizers. Our students were given the topic “Service to the Fatherland and Responsibility for Its Fate” during the draw. Despite all the difficulties and sleepless nights that the girls faced, they coped with the task and reached the final of the competition works, where they were assessed by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Olga Petrova and Director of the Department of Information Policy and Comprehensive Security Andrey Tolmachev.

Deputy Head of the Media Department of the IOM Student Council Valeria Lebert shared her impressions after the Gathering: “Having attended the Gathering of Student Media “Our Values” in Senezh, I realized how powerful the young generation is now. Everyone defends their position and goes all the way, showing stunning results. This was my first experience of such trips, and I want to call it successful. Thanks to the girls, the organizers and the State University of Management for such an opportunity and a great time!”

The head of the case club Larisa Sokolova also gave a comment: “During the five days spent in Senezh, I rethought many things. The topics that the speakers raised touched me to the depths of my soul. At the end of the Gathering, I did not even want to leave, to part with the amazing people whom I had managed to love in such a short time. “If anyone had any doubt about the DUP’s commitment to their promises to the Unionist people about restoring Northern Ireland’s place within the UK those were removed by Gavin Robinson this morning on Radio Ulster when he categorically ruled out pulling Stormont down or even boycotting North/South Ministerial Council meetings.

“Now that there are no elections for a number of years, the DUP have reverted to type and rolled over to Sinn Fein. Pledges like that of Gordon Lyons who once told us, “If there is a choice between remaining in office or implementing the protocol in its present form, then the only option for any unionist Minister would be to cease to hold such office” have been disposed of.

“It is clear that the DUP have abandoned any pretence of speaking up for the Loyalist people and continuing the battle against the Protocol. Clearly, they have calculated that the Unionists will, like them, come to terms with a border in the Irish Sea. TUV will remain true to the pledge signed by all Unionist leaders in which we said that it was our “unalterable position that the Protocol must be rejected and replaced by arrangements which fully respect Northern Ireland’s position as a constituent and integral part of the United Kingdom”.

Briefing UN Security Council members today (19 Sep) on the situation in the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process expressed his “grave concern” on the “the series of explosions across Lebanon and rockets fired toward Israel in recent days,” warning that these incidents add to the overall volatility. Wennesland urged all parties to “refrain from steps that will further exacerbate the situation and take immediate steps to deescalate.”

In his briefing, Wennesland also highlighted the ongoing demolitions and seizures of Palestinian-owned structures in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. He noted that over 550 people, including 250 children, had been displaced. He said, “demolitions and seizures of Palestinian-owned structures continued… citing the lack of Israeli-issued building permits, which are almost impossible for Palestinians to obtain.”

The Special Coordinator also expressed alarm over provocative actions and rhetoric on both sides. Urging all parties to reject such dangerous incitements, he said, “a joint statement from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad threatened a return to the use of suicide bombings… while an Israeli minister said, ‘Palestinian prisoners must be killed. Shot in the head.’”

Helen Clark, a member of The Elders and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, told the Security Council that the current approach to managing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has failed. She criticized member states that use their veto power to “protect allies” or “obstruct geopolitical rivals,” warning that this undermines the authority of the Council.

Riyad H. Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN, referred to a recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, declaring Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as unlawful. “The Court reaffirmed the illegality of Israel’s settlements… stressing the obligations of the occupying Power to cease immediately all settlement activities,” Mansour said.

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said, “this Council and the world must wake up to the reality of the threat Iran poses. The dark force driving the violence we see today is not a collection of independent groups; it is Iran pulling the strings,” He said, “the Iranian proxies, Hezbollah in the North, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria and terrorist cells in Judea and Samaria, are all Iran’s attack dogs unleashed to spread death and destruction across the region.” Danon further said that Iran is not only targeting Israel but is seeking domination of the entire Middle East, while the Palestinian Authority is being “utterly weak and impotent.”

MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Highland Council By-elections for Wards 6 & 14 – Voters urged to make sure their vote counts

Polling will take place on Thursday 26 September 2024 to fill the two vacant seats for The Highland Council’s Cromarty Firth ward and the one vacant seat for the Inverness Central Ward. Voters are being reminded to be ready to make their vote count.

The single transferable vote system will be used. Instead of using a cross, voters should number the candidates in the order of their choice, putting a number 1 in the box next to the name of the candidate who is their first choice, 2 in the box next to their second choice and so on. Voters can mark as many choices as they wish.

Postal packs have been despatched to those registered electors that submitted a form by the postal vote deadline. Further guidance on how to complete your postal pack is available here

Anyone who has requested a postal vote will not be able to vote in person at a polling station. If you are unable to post it in time, it is possible to hand in your completed postal pack into any of the polling stations located within wards 6 and 14 between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 26 September 2024. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) convened a hearing to condemn American and European oil companies for continuing to conduct business with the Maduro regime, even after its attempt to steal the 2024 presidential election.

“In Venezuela, a cruel contradiction has unfolded. Maduro has intensified his brutality through jail and death since July 28th,” said Chairwoman Salazar. “In the meantime, unfortunately, American and European oil companies led by Chevron, Repsol, Eni, and Maurel et Prom have now increased their pumping and their profits—directly fueling the tyrannical machinery of oppression. Shame on them!”

Chairwoman Salazar began her hearing by describing the current human rights situation in Venezuela, where the dictator Nicolas Maduro has unleashed an unprecedented wave of repression against the opposition and regular civilians in the weeks following the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election. She identified a key weakness in the Biden-Harris Administration’s policy towards the Maduro regime: Allowing American oil companies to continue operating in Venezuela without complaint. Chevron, Repsol, Eni, and Maurel et Prom are the four companies with the largest licenses to operate within Venezuela.

Salazar began her line of questioning by asking the top Biden-Harris State Department official on Venezuela Kevin Sullivan why his agency renewed Chevron’s license to operate in Venezuela 33 days after Maduro lost the election on July 28, 2024. Sullivan insisted that the decision comes down ultimately to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Salazar reminded Sullivan that OFAC only issues policy at the direction of the State Department, so any independence in their decision-making process is simply wrong. Chairwoman Salazar also indicated that by allowing these companies to continue operating in Venezuela, the Maduro regime will retain the financial support it needs to continue its repression against the Venezuelan people.

Next, Chairwoman Salazar asked Mr. Sullivan about the 50 companies who applied for licenses to operate in Venezuela more broadly. After deflecting and referring the Congresswoman to OFAC again, Salazar made the case that by allowing these companies to operate in Venezuela without repercussions from the U.S. government, the United States is sending a weak and ambiguous message to the international community that what Maduro is doing is ultimately acceptable. Furthermore, Chairwoman Salazar asked about the possibility that the State Department will pause these licenses. Sullivan responded that the possibility is always there as a matter of policy, but again said it was still under review.

Chairwoman Salazar continued her opening line of questioning by asking about the Biden-Harris Administration’s refusal to recognize Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the legitimate president-elect of Venezuela. Sullivan responded that Gonzalez is definitely the victor in the Venezuelan elections, and that the U.S. government has called on Nicolas Maduro to release the results showing these results. Salazar reminded the State Department that anything short of recognition will be seen as a lack of support for the opposition in the eyes of the Maduro regime.

Salazar closed her opening remarks by asking the leading officials on human rights and aid at the State Department and USAID, Mr. Enrique Roig and Mr. Greg Howell, respectively, about the impact this major policy weakness will have on migratory flows. 4 million Venezuelans said they would leave their country if the dictator Maduro refuses to hand over power. This will strain resources in neighboring South American countries like Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador, and add to the growing national security crisis at the United States’ southern border. Salazar received no response other than that the U.S. government is working with those South American governments to strengthen their capacity to receive these migrants.

Chairwoman Salazar ended the hearing by emphasizing the need for bipartisan support for the Venezuelan opposition at this crucial hour.

The Expanding Knowledge on Military Reproductive Health Care Act will help ensure that service members and military health care providers know their abortion rights, no matter where they are stationed. The Improved Contraception Access for Service Members Act, co-led by Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14),will make sure that active-duty service members can access a year’s worth of contraceptives at a time.

“We send servicewomen overseas to risk their lives for their country. We should not be sending them to Texas or Florida to lose access to basic reproductive health care and risk their lives giving birth. That’s why I am introducing two critical bills to ensure that servicewomen and our military families know how they can access abortion care if they need it, and so our servicewomen have access to contraception regardless of where they are stationed,” said Rep. “This issue is deeply personal to me – my daughter recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy. And I know that she and her fellow servicewomen do not have a choice where they are sent to serve. Sherrill’s legislation has earned endorsements from American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Center for Reproductive Rights, Minority Veterans of America, National Partnership for Women & Families, National Women’s Law Center, Physicians for Reproductive Health, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Power to Decide, and Reproductive Freedom for All.

The Expanding Knowledge on Military Reproductive Health Care Act would require the Department of Defense (DOD) to provide service members with information on the reproductive health care, including abortion care, they are entitled to in the military health care system; how they can find reproductive care not provided by military health providers; and how they can request leave and travel reimbursement if they need to travel to another state to receive an abortion.

Additionally, the DOD would be required to provide doctors with information and training on their obligation to provide reproductive care, including abortions in circumstances covered by current federal law. Information for service members and medical personnel would need to be provided annually and within two weeks of a change of station.

The Improved Contraception Access for Service Members Act, led by Reps. Sherrill and Underwood, would require TRICARE to allow active-duty servicemembers and beneficiaries the ability to access up to 365-day supplies of contraception at military treatment facility pharmacies, certain retail pharmacies, and the TRICARE national mail-order pharmacy program. This legislation would extend Sherrill and Underwood’s Convenient Contraception Act to active-duty military families and service women.

Representative Sherrill continues to lead in the fight for women’s health in Congress. She stood up for servicewomen and military families against Senator Tommy Tuberville’s efforts to overturn the Department of Defense’s abortion travel policy. Additionally, she successfully secured an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2025 NDAA to codify access to year-long supplies of contraceptives to service members. Sherrill has introduced legislation to promote education about women’s heart health, and has co-led a bill to ensure women can access a full year’s supply of contraceptives, rather than just three months at a time. Finally, she is leading efforts to end “judge shopping,” a tactic used by anti-abortion advocates to gain favorable outcomes.

MIL-OSI USA: Díaz-Balart and Wasserman Schultz Lead Bipartisan Effort to Set $100 Million Reward for Arrest and Conviction of Nicolás Maduro

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-25), co-chairs of the Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus, along with Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ-4), Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL-28), Jenniffer González-Colon (PR-At-Large), María Elvira Salazar (R-FL-27), Mike Waltz (R-FL-06), and Darren Soto (D-FL-09) introduced a bill to raise the U.S. Department of Justice’s bounty on dictator Nicolás Maduro from $15 million to $100 million. The increase would be funded by assets already seized from Maduro and his regime.

The reward would be paid out by the federal government using seized assets already being withheld from Maduro, officials of the Maduro regime and their co-conspirators, not taxpayer funds. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Florida and its federal law enforcement partners who have brought dozens of criminal charges against high-level regime officials, asset seizures total approximately $450 million.

The Senate companion was introduced by U.S. Senators Rick Scott (FL) and Marco Rubio (FL).

“For nearly two months since the July 28th presidential elections, in which the Venezuelan people overwhelmingly voted for President-elect Edmundo González, the Maduro regime has only escalated its brutal repression. According to reports, arbitrary detentions, torture, and politically motivated persecution – have intensified under Maduro’s oppressive rule.

Maduro’s regime is a criminal enterprise that fuels narco-terrorism, suppresses independent media, and violates human rights with impunity. Last year, I warned that the Biden-Harris Administration’s appeasement of this dictatorship would only embolden Maduro. Lifting sanctions has endangered our national security, aiding a regime closely allied with dangerous adversaries like Russia, Iran, Cuba, and the PRC.

In its reply to my previous question regarding wood pulp producer Altri[1], the Commission points out that ‘From the information provided, the Commission cannot identify any breach of the IED or the EIAD at this early stage of the procedure.’ I would like to know what the Commission means by ‘at this early stage of the procedure’ and what documentation has been submitted so far. In line with the prevention principle, any project that could breach EU rules must be thoroughly studied. In April, the Commission met with several groups affected by the project, which provided it with a host of documents on breaches of a number of EU directives.

Chestnut cultivation is one of the mainstays of the economy and of rural life in many mountainous areas of Greece, particularly the Pelion area. In recent years, however, aside from climate conditions, chestnut growers have been facing serious problems because of chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), which has led to significant losses in production and destroyed thousands of trees.

Despite the attempts at biological control and other management measures applied in some areas of Europe, the disease continues to spread, causing irreversible damage to crops. Chestnut producers have expressed concern for the future of their crops and the financial viability of their families. Their output this year is down by some 50%.

Taking into account the critical nature of the situation and the need to support growers:

1.What additional steps does the Commission intend to take to support research and the application of pioneering biological methods of controlling the disease, such as the use of hypoviral agents which have succeeded in other regions of Europe?

2.Is there any provision for giving financial support to Greek growers affected by the disease in order to reduce the consequences of production losses and secure the viability of the crops?

MIL-OSI Europe: Switzerland participates in G20 discussions on research and innovation

Bern, 23.09.2024 – On 19 September, Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, attended the G20 Research and Innovation Ministerial Meeting in Manaus, Brazil. Switzerland was invited by Brazil, which currently holds the G20 presidency, to participate in the new working group set up this year.

The theme of the meeting was Open Innovation for a Just and Sustainable Development. The main topic of discussion was international cooperation in science and innovation, in particular with regard to open innovation. In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, the contribution of science and innovation to decarbonisation, research in the Amazon, and the topics of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in research were discussed. The ministers adopted the Manaus Declaration, which reflects the political consensus of the G20 countries on the above issues.

In the course of the event, Ms Hirayama exchanged views with the heads of delegations from the G20 presidency, Brazil, as well as other countries and organisations.

My region, Lower Silesia and Opolskie, has been severely affected in recent days by the impact of ongoing extreme flooding: broken bridges, damaged roads, devastated hospitals, schools and public buildings, thousands of destroyed private farms, homes and other buildings. While it is still impossible even to begin estimating the losses, as hundreds of villages are still underwater, it is clear already that massive financial investment will be needed for reconstruction and to recover from the effects of the flooding, and that this will exceed the capacity of the affected communities. The consequences of this disaster will be felt for years to come. They will be a test of solidarity for the Union as a whole, and for the EU institutions a test of the effectiveness and efficiency of resilience and crisis response mechanisms. In this context:

1.Is the Commission ready to provide urgent and adequate material and financial assistance to the regions affected by the flooding?

2.Given the scale and extent of the floods, does the Commission consider that funding under the Solidarity Fund is sufficient to support the countries affected by this disaster, and is it planning to review the Fund in order to ensure that countries affected by the floods receive long-term assistance that is proportionate to their needs?

3.Is the creation of a separate dedicated fund for the repair and construction of flood prevention infrastructure in the areas affected by this disaster, both in Poland and in other EU countries, possible and under consideration?

MIL-OSI China: Global Youth Culture Dialogue held in Beijing

The Global Youth Culture Dialogue took place in Beijing on Sept. 20, focusing on “Enhancing Global Competence of Youth Through Competition and Cooperation.” The event attracted over 100 youth representatives, athletes and experts from more than 20 countries to discuss how sports can foster global competence among young people.

Yu Yunquan, vice president of China International Communications Group (CICG) and president of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS), highlighted the role of young athletes as bridges between China and the world. He reaffirmed CICG’s commitment to establishing cross-border dialogue and learning platforms for youth, aiming to cultivate more youth pioneers in cross-cultural communication.

Yu Junsheng, director of the Information Office of Beijing Municipal People’s Government, underlined Beijing’s status as a hub for international exchange and cultural innovation. He encouraged young people to promote global unity through sports and to contribute their insights to cultural exchanges and mutual progress.

Olympic champion Yang Jiayu, as a representative of young athletes, delivered an inspiring message, urging her peers to embrace the Olympic spirit and strive for excellence, and emphasizing the importance of perseverance in achieving fulfillment.

During discussions, experts and youth representatives explored the importance of competition and cooperation in sports.

Jorge Andrés Contreras, a Spanish-language expert at the Foreign Languages Press, noted that teamwork is essential for success and highlighted the need to respect rules and opponents in the pursuit of global competence.

Héloïse Gentil, a French expert who worked on both the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, underscored sports as a powerful medium for social connection and national representation. She noted China’s impressive achievements in sports and expressed hope for increased Sino-French cooperation.

The event also featured a basketball exhibition game and cheerleading performance, enhancing the cultural atmosphere.

Co-organized by the ACCWS and the Information Office of the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, the dialogue was held as a sideline event of the Beijing Cultural Forum. Plans for future events are in place to promote cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration among global youth.

MIL-OSI Europe: UN Secretary-General and Heads of Multilateral Development Banks to enhance collaboration

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and top UN officials met with the Heads of Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) Group on Sunday in a joint effort to better support countries in accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The high-level dialogue, which included five Presidents and three Vice Presidents of the major MDBs, further advances the partnership between the UN and the MDB systems. The IMF Managing Director also attended the meeting.

MDB Heads shared with the UN leadership their reforms to become a better, bigger and more effective system with a renewed sense of urgency and determination. The Secretary-General underscored the importance of MDB reforms as part of his call to unlock greater volumes of affordable long-term resources to close the SDG financing gap.

UN and MDB leaders discussed enhancing collaboration at the country level, especially in fragile and conflict-affected countries, as well as their efforts to catalyze private sector resources towards sustainable investments.

MDBs also agreed to collaborate towards the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) next year in Seville, Spain, where public, private and civil society leaders and organizations will assess progress and chart a course forward on financing for the SDGs.

Following the working meeting, Spain, Jamaica and Canada co-hosted an open dialogue with MDB leaders, the UN Deputy Secretary-General and high-level UN Member State delegates.

MDB leaders highlighted their progress working as a system for greater impact and scale, the key role of concessional finance to support the poorest, and their work on financial innovation. MDBs also briefed Member States on their joint work, based on concrete deliverables outlined in the “Viewpoint Note”, a joint MDB workplan released in April 2024. These wide-ranging initiatives include scaling-up MDB financing capacity, boosting joint action on climate, and enhancing development effectiveness and impact.

MDBs also discussed how they can channel Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to significantly increase financing for the SDGs, including supporting initiatives such as the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

Sunday’s meetings took place during the Summit of the Future, a unique gathering of the UN General Assembly focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation, including on international finance, to tackle shared global challenges, including climate change, poverty and inequality.

MIL-OSI Europe: Briefing – Directive on combating corruption – 23-09-2024

In May 2023, the European Commission presented an anti-corruption package, which includes a proposal for a directive on combating corruption. Based on Articles 83 and 82 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the proposal defines criminal offences and sanctions relating to corruption, one of the ‘areas of particularly serious crime with a cross-border dimension’ for which the European Parliament and the Council may establish minimum rules by means of directives. The proposal seeks to update the fragmented EU legislative framework, including by incorporating international standards binding on the EU. It addresses corruption in both the public and private sectors. In Parliament, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs adopted its report in January 2024. The committee decision to enter into interinstitutional negotiations was confirmed by plenary in February 2024. The Council confirmed its position in June. The new Parliament now needs to confirm its position before trilogue negotiations can take place. First edition.
