    AFRICOM Deputies Engage with Angolan Leaders to Strengthen Security Cooperation

    Lt. Gen. John W. Brennan, Deputy Commander for U.S. Africa Command, and Ambassador Robert Scott, AFRICOM’s Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, traveled to Angola, July 22-25, to meet with Angolan government and military leaders and Chargé d’Affaires Noah Zaring and his team at U.S. Embassy Angola and Sao Tome and Principe. 

    The visit reaffirmed AFRICOM’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Angola, a security leader in southern Africa, and came on the heels of a meeting with the Namibian Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs on July 21. 

    The AFRICOM leaders and Chargé d’Affaires Zaring engaged in meetings with Angola’s Secretary of State for National Defense for the Ministry of Defense José Maria de Lima; Secretary of State for External Affairs for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmerelda Mendonça; and Joint Chief of Staff for Patriotic Education General José Maria Marques.

    Discussions focused on advancing shared security and economic interests, to include countering transnational threats to the U.S. Homeland and Angola, enabling partners to lead their own security initiatives with minimal U.S. involvement, and leveraging shared economic opportunities, notably the transformational Lobito Corridor initiative. 

    The Lobito Corridor is a large-scale infrastructure initiative, backed by the G7, that is designed to connect the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to Angola’s Atlantic coast at the port of Lobito, providing inland industries like mining and agriculture with effective and timely access to global markets and furthering domestic and international investments.

    The two leaders emphasized that security underpins private sector investments. Working together with African nations to develop secure, stable countries, regions and economies, allows for environments where economic opportunities and partnerships thrive.

    During their visit, Scott, who has 30 years of State Department experience in Africa, and Brennan, a career special forces officer and leader, also traveled to a training base near Cabo Ledo where they met with Special Forces Brigade Commander Brigadier João Baptista Paulo and other special forces leaders and soldiers. While there, Brennan took part in a wreath laying ceremony at a memorial honoring fallen Angolan special forces members.

    The two also observed U.S. and Angolan special forces involved in a live fire exercise being conducted during a Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) focused on close quarters combat and small unit tactics. JCETs and large-scale AFRICOM exercises bring together partners and allies to enhance readiness and interoperability and sharpen warfighter skillsets, empowering lethal, combat ready forces to deter aggression and win on the battlefield. This is the fifth JCET conducted between U.S. and Angolan forces since 2022.

    In addition to participating in AFRICOM sponsored exercises and conferences, Angola has also been accepted into the 2025 cohort of State Partnership Program (SPP) nations, a comprehensive Department of Defense program that partners allied and partner nations with a U.S. state and its National Guard forces. Through SPP, the National Guard conducts military-to-military exchanges and training in support of U.S. and partner nation defense security goals. SPP also leverages whole-of-society relationships and capabilities to facilitate broader cooperation spanning military, government, economic and social spheres. An announcement of which state has been partnered with Angola is expected in the Fall.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that the three terrorists killed during Operation Mahadev on Monday were directly involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.

    Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah said, “Yesterday, the Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police neutralised three terrorists — Suleiman, Afghan, and Jibran. Suleiman was a top commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, responsible for the Pahalgam and Gagangir terror attacks. Multiple pieces of evidence support his involvement.”

    He added that Afghan and Jibran were also senior Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives.

    “I want to inform the House that the terrorists who killed our citizens in Baisaran Valley have now been eliminated,” Shah said.

    “The people who used to supply food to them were detained earlier. Once the bodies of these terrorists were brought to Srinagar, they were identified by those who were kept detained by our agencies,” Shah added

    The anti-terror operation took place in the Lidwas area, as confirmed by the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army on Monday.

    As part of Samsung’s R280-million worth Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP) launched in 2019, in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (Dtic) – the partners recently opened the third call, inviting all suitable, black-owned ICT and Service Centre SMMEs to take part in this year’s Samsung EEIP Enterprise Development (ED) Programme.
     
    This Samsung ED programme which aims to empower black-owned ICT and Service Centre enterprises to boost the economy and create jobs through entrepreneurship and business support – involves initiatives like grant funding, specialist business development support and access to supply chain opportunities for black-owned and women-owned small, medium and micro enterprises. This programme’s efforts are aligned with the country’s transformation goals and aim to foster a more inclusive economy. 
     
    In an effort to inspire potential future participants coupled by Samsung’s need to measure the impact and effectiveness of its CSR initiatives – the company took the time to speak to two of the beneficiaries from the ED programme in the last few years. When asked how Samsung EEIP provided the participating SMME owners with the confidence and support needed to mean business about their businesses, this is what they had to say:
     
    One of the beneficiaries is Thoriso Rangata. He is a 32-year-old, businessman and the owner of KTO Digital, which focuses on Business Process Automation, Software Development Services and Background Screening Software as a Service (SaaS) solution provider. Thoriso says from being part of the programme, he gained the reassurance and confidence he needed.
     
    Thoriso based in Johannesburg, originally from Limpopo, became part of the programme when he responded to a public call for applications in 2020. At the time, his business, KTO Digital, needed support in order to meet the company’s growth objectives. Thoriso is a true example of how the programme is able to empowerment ICT entrepreneurship as well as stimulate job creation and assist in contributing to economic growth. 
     

     
    Since being part of the EEIP programme, Thoriso’s company won the Nedbank Business of the Year Award in 2022. In the same year, his company launched their own product and received accreditation as a credit bureau business.
     
    The support he received from the programme has allowed KTO Digital to create over 20 jobs between 2021 to date. This is in line with the programme’s objective of creating both direct and indirect jobs, with a particular emphasis on Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and the development of township economy.
     
    These achievements demonstrate how the EEIP programme has provided Thoriso and his team the opportunity to pursue their passions as well as bringing security and stability – not only to his employees but also to their families’ livelihoods. Thoriso explains, “the other direct benefits that KTO Digital received from being part of the programme included: Grant Funding, Asset Financing as well as Continuous Business Mentorship – and this, is exactly what our business needed in order to move forward.”
     
    He added: “As a company, we strongly believe that the skills we acquired from this EEIP programme, which included Business regulatory governance structures and strategic business growth approaches/methods – have contributed to the success of our business to date. This programme has really helped us to achieve our goals, and it has taken our business to new heights.”
     
    Based in Sinoville, Tshwane, the second EEIP beneficiary is Dumisani Mkhwebane – a 38-year-old businessman who co-owns and runs TIA-Solutions – an IT company with Boitumelo Mkhwebane – a 36-year-old, businesswoman. Their business focuses on Secure Scalable IT Solutions by building cloud infrastructure through collaborative team efforts. This provides their customers with resilience from cyber-attacks and contributes to productivity, efficiency as well as business continuity.
     

     
    Dumisani explained further: “As TIA-Solutions, we partner with multinational vendors such as Microsoft, Fortinet and Veritas which allow us to give our customers end-to-end, tailor-made IT solutions that cater to their business needs.”
     
    He also elaborated on how the company entered into the programme, Dumisani said: “We saw an advert on LinkedIn in 2023 about the EEIP Enterprise ED and decided to enter. We then received Capital Investment to buy computer equipment for our internal operations as well as company vehicles. In addition, we received Business Training and Skills development for our employees as well as other vital skills that we needed which included: Business Management Skills, Marketing and how to better position our company.
     
    “The programme has both Financial and Non-Financial benefits for Business Growth and Sustainability,” Dumisani added. “It is for these reasons that we would like to encourage other SMEs to apply to be part of the programme. We strongly believe that the ED programme will help grow other SMEs like it did ours and it will help a great deal in upskilling their workforce.”
     
    Importantly, this Samsung ED programme seeks to inspire potential future participants by demonstrating how the EEIP can help them kick-start their businesses. The tangible results articulated by these beneficiaries are a confirmation of Samsung’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and providing a reliable support system to SMEs in the country.

    The final hearings of the projects of the sixth stage of the grant support program for startup projects of students of Russian universities “Student Startup”, implemented within the framework of the federal project “Technologies”, have been completed.

    BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) — China’s National Meteorological Service on Tuesday raised the alert level to “orange” as heavy rainfall continued in many parts of the country.

  • NISAR set to transform earth science with ISRO-NASA collaboration

    The first images of Earth were captured in 1946 through a motion camera picture. The world stood still from far above while its floor held the chaos on its surface and beneath all the land. Almost eight decades from then, the world will now see what is on and under Earth in remarkable detail, all thanks to the collaborative project between ISRO and NASA called “NISAR.” Slated to be launched on July 30 from India’s Satish Dhawan Space Center,the mission is set to change the course of how we see this planet.

    What exactly is NISAR?

    NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) aims to monitor Earth’s surface using advanced radar imaging. A three-dimensional view of Earth will be generated through the two radars of NISARthat will be able to track changes in the surface with accuracy of a fraction of an inch. This project, which cost around $1.4 billion, is more than just a testament of collaboration between NASA and ISRO but a scientific marvel in itself. NISAR is the most advanced radar system that will generate around 80 terabytes of data per day. That is equivalent to one hundred and fifty hard drives that can store 512 GB. This is the maximum amount of data that will be generated per day by any Earth satellite that has ever been launched by NASA or ISRO. TheS-Band Radar of NISAR was developed by ISRO’s center in Ahmedabad, and the L-Band Radar was produced by NASA in Southern California. The labelling “L and S Band” is attributed to the microwave bandwidth regions from which the radar will collect the data.

    How will this data from NISAR change things for scientists?

    NISAR will map changes on the surface of Earth.Broadly, the applications can be seen in natural hazard monitoring, assessment of sea, ice, and glaciers, and also in crop management. The satellite will be able to see through clouds, rain, and in both day and night. The data will be able to provide insights into the time of glacial melting and provide unprecedented coverage ofAntarctica. Moreover, through NISAR, it will be possible to identify the parts of fault lines that move slowly and detect land movement essential for understanding and detecting earthquakes. Earthquakes have damaged large dams, like Koyna in 1967 and Shih-Gang in 1999, due to shaking or fault movement. NISAR satellite data can help prevent such failures by mapping ground shifts and fault risks with high precision.

    The satellite will be used for ecosystem monitoring for land and ice-covered surfaces twice every twelve days and will also include parts of Earth that were not monitored so rigorously and with such frequency in the past. From forest canopies to croplands and from ice melts to land movements, NISAR will cover everything. Such detailed monitoring with advanced radar systems will thus paint a fresh picture of the planet in front of scientists. The data collected by NISAR is open access and is expected to unravel details of land movement and of ecosystems that may provide novel insights.From scientists to policymakers, this data will revolutionize our understanding of the planet.

It is clear that India is scripting a new chapter in space diplomacy, and it is not restricted only to the USA. ISRO has ongoing collaborative missions with other countries like France,Japan, Australia, Russia, Italy, and Europe. Given the success rate of ISRO, it has also become a key player in foreign launches with 433 foreign satellite launches from 34 countries.     The Lord Chancellor has approved the reappointments of Robert Paterson and Alexander Wood as solicitor members of the Insolvency Rules Committee.

    The Lord Chancellor has approved the reappointments, for a second term of Robert Paterson and Alexander Wood as Solicitor Members of the Insolvency Rules Committee for four years. Robert Paterson second term will commence on 26 June 2026. Alexander Wood’s second term will commence on 30 September 2026.

    Biographies

    Robert Paterson is a partner at Wedlake Bell LLP and specialises in all aspects of restructuring and insolvency law. He acts for officeholders, lenders, directors and creditors. He has recently advised on several cross-border insolvencies. Robert spent six months on secondment to the Policy Unit of the Insolvency Service. He is also a licensed insolvency practitioner.

    He has not declared any political activity.

    Alexander Wood is a partner at McDermott Will & Emery. He has over 25 years’ experience working on some of the most complex insolvency and restructuring matters including Westinghouse, MF Global, the Lehman Bros cases and the sovereign debt restructures of Ukraine and Argentina. He is also an Honorary Professor of Practice at UCL where he teaches corporate restructuring and insolvency at post-graduate level.

    His Majesty The King met with members of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group in Caithness Scotland, to mark series of significant milestones.

    The nuclear industry marked three significant anniversaries this week as His Majesty The King met with members of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group in Caithness Scotland, during his annual visit to the region.

    The visit recognised the NDA group’s progress in its national mission to safely decommission the UK’s earliest nuclear sites, and its long-standing contribution to sustainability and economic development in the region and across the UK.

    It coincided with the NDA group marking several significant milestones including the 20th anniversary of the NDA and 70 years for NRS Dounreay, which has been an enduring presence at the heart of the Caithness community.

    The site began its life as the UK’s centre of pioneering fast reactor research and is now once again, at the forefront of science and engineering – developing first of a kind solutions for complex nuclear decommissioning challenges.

    This year also marks 50 years for Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL). Founded in 1975, PNTL is the world’s leading maritime nuclear transporter and part of NDA subsidiary, Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS). The King also viewed the Pacific Heron, part of the PNTL fleet of ships designed to safely transport nuclear materials around the globe.

    Compared with May 2025:

    • median consumer perceptions of inflation over the previous 12 months remained unchanged, as did median expectations for inflation three and five years ahead, while median inflation expectations for one year ahead decreased;
    • expectations for nominal income growth over the next 12 months remained unchanged, while expectations for spending growth over the next 12 months decreased;
    • expectations for economic growth over the next 12 months became less negative, while the expected unemployment rate in 12 months’ time decreased;
    • expectations for growth in the price of homes over the next 12 months decreased slightly, as did expectations for mortgage interest rates 12 months ahead.

    Inflation

    In June, the median rate of perceived inflation over the previous 12 months remained unchanged at 3.1% for the fifth consecutive month, its lowest level since September 2021. Meanwhile, median expectations for inflation over the next 12 months decreased by 0.2 percentage points to 2.6%, meaning that the increases observed in March and April were fully reversed in May and June. Expectations for three years ahead were unchanged at 2.4%, while expectations for inflation five years ahead held steady at 2.1% for the seventh consecutive month. Uncertainty about inflation expectations over the next 12 months was unchanged in June. Broadly, the evolution of inflation perceptions and expectations followed similar trends across income groups. However, over the previous year and a half lower income quintiles reported slightly higher inflation perceptions and short-horizon expectations than higher income quintiles. Younger respondents (aged 18-34) continued to report lower inflation perceptions and expectations than older respondents (aged 35-54 and 55-70), although the gap was narrower than in previous years.

    Consumers’ expectations for nominal income growth over the next 12 months remained unchanged at 1.0% in June. However, this apparent stability conceals a decline in expectations among higher income individuals, offset by an increase in expectations among lower income groups. Perceived nominal spending growth over the previous 12 months held steady at 5.0% in June. In contrast, expected nominal spending growth over the next 12 months decreased further to 3.2% in June, from 3.5% in May and 3.7% in April. This decline reflects the heightened economic uncertainty of recent months as well as lower expected inflation.

    Economic growth expectations for the next 12 months became less negative, rising to -1.0% in June from -1.1% in May and -1.9% in April. Expectations for the unemployment rate 12 months ahead edged down to 10.3% in June, from 10.4% in May. Consumers continued to expect that the future unemployment rate would be only slightly higher than the perceived current unemployment rate (9.8%), suggesting a broadly stable labour market outlook.

    Consumers expected the price of their home to increase by 3.1% over the next 12 months, a slight decline from 3.2% in May. Expectations for mortgage interest rates 12 months ahead fell to 4.3%, down from 4.4% in May. As in previous months, lower income households expected the highest mortgage interest rates 12 months ahead (4.9%), while higher income households expected the lowest rates (3.9%). The net percentage of households reporting tighter (relative to those reporting easier) access to credit over the previous 12 months increased slightly, while the net percentage of those expecting tighter credit conditions over the next 12 months declined marginally.

    Director Shen Ao’s new film “Dead to Rights” tells the true story of brave civilians who risked their lives to safeguard crucial photographic evidence of Japan’s wartime atrocities during the Nanjing Massacre, defying systematic cover-up efforts and staged propaganda by Japanese forces.

    “On the battlefield where smoke rises from gunfire, we see weapons and bullets. But on the invisible front, another war rages over public opinion, propaganda and culture,” Shen said. “On this battlefield, each photo is like a bullet. Opposing forces clash, each advancing their own narratives, until the world finally sees the truth and distinguishes good from evil.”

    Starring Liu Haoran, Wang Chuanjun, Gao Ye and Wang Xiao, the film is based on documented accounts of Japanese military atrocities during the Nanjing Massacre. The story follows civilians who take shelter in a photo studio and are forced to develop Japanese military film for survival. When they discover photographs from the massacre and the army moves to suppress the evidence, they must fight to survive while smuggling them out.

    The narrative is based on the true story of 15-year-old Luo Jin, who in 1938 was forced to develop Japanese military photographs in Nanjing. After discovering images of atrocities, he secretly compiled a set of damning prints into an album and hid it in a temple. His friend Wu Xuan preserved the album, which served as evidence at the trial of war criminal Hisao Tani, one of the primary perpetrators of the Nanjing Massacre.

    The true story inspired the 1987 film “Massacre in Nanjing,” which later motivated director Shen to create a new cinematic interpretation of these historic atrocities.

    Shen, a photography enthusiast who has collected vintage film cameras, learned traditional photo-developing skills in university — a foundation that informed his filmmaking. Intrigued by the photo studio’s role in documenting the war crimes, he and his crew spent three years conducting extensive research. They studied archival photos, documents and eyewitness records, including Japanese soldiers’ wartime images and American missionary John Gillespie Magee’s documentation.

    “Photographs, by their very nature, are meant to preserve life’s beautiful moments,” the director said. “Yet after the Japanese army occupied Nanjing, these same images were weaponized — twisted into tools of propaganda and trophies of conquest.”

    The film also depicts the Japanese military’s “goodwill photos,” staged images designed to present a sanitized version of the occupation. The occupiers’ grotesque merriment in these photographs stands in chilling contrast to the helplessness and despair of Nanjing’s civilians.

    “These ‘goodwill photos’ represent a propaganda battle,” the director said. “While we have many films depicting combat, I can’t recall any that focus on this information warfare aspect. I want to present a fresh cinematic perspective. Beyond the military actions, the Japanese army also created carefully orchestrated public relations materials in Nanjing to mislead local civilians and international observers. What struck me most was how many of these photos featured children, vulnerable subjects who were easily exploited for such propaganda purposes.”

    The film has earned an 8.5/10 rating on review site Douban, with audiences responding emotionally to its realistic portrayal of Nanjing’s wartime tragedy. 

    The release coincides with the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese people’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Shen said the film serves to promote “correct historical understanding, opposition to historical nihilism, and strict fidelity to factual records.”

    The 2025 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference will be held Oct. 16-18 in Beijing at the Beijing Etrong International Exhibition and Convention Center.

    The annual conference will focus on autonomous driving, smart vehicle interiors, vehicle-road-cloud integration and intelligent low-carbon transportation.

    Organizers say the event aims to deepen integration between intelligent connected vehicles and related industries while promoting global innovation in the sector.

    The conference will include three main sessions: an opening ceremony, general assembly and closing ceremony, according to organizers.     Humanoid robots will sprint, jump and play soccer at the world’s first competitive humanoid robotics games next month, as advances in artificial intelligence and automation technology take center stage in Beijing.

    The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games, running Aug. 14-17 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, will pit robots against each other in 26 categories ranging from traditional sports to practical workplace tasks.

    Robots will participate in traditional sports including running, high jump, long jump, gymnastics and 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 soccer. Performance events will include solo and group dance and martial arts demonstrations that will showcase real-time robot collaboration.

    The games will also feature scenario-based challenges designed to highlight robots’ potential in industries from manufacturing to health care, including factory material handling, hospital medication sorting and hotel cleaning tasks.

    Spectators will be able to challenge robots directly in table tennis and basketball competitions during interactive segments.

    Young people from China and 12 African countries designed environmental projects during a dialogue in Beijing on Monday, as both sides seek to deepen cooperation on climate and sustainability issues.

    The 5th China-Africa Future Leaders’ Dialogue Achievements Report Meeting and China-Africa Future Leaders’ Dialogue Symposium on Green Development was held at Beijing Library, where Chinese and African participants formed seven working groups to develop what organizers called “small but beautiful” green public welfare projects.

    Representatives from African nations also joined faculty and students from Tsinghua University and environmental experts from the Beijing Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Center for discussions on sustainable development practices.

    The initiative aims to transform young people from passive observers into active champions of environmental cooperation between China and Africa, organizers said.

    Organizers said promising projects identified during the meeting would receive continued support to help convert ideas into tangible results.

    A cold Monday morning drizzle in the rainy season lingered over Inya Lake as paddles cut through the still water. With ten days remaining until the 2025 Chengdu World Games, Myanmar’s dragon boat team was training relentlessly.

    At the Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation compound in Yangon, the sound of synchronized strokes echoed. Coaches call instructions from the banks while athletes push through drills, focusing on rhythm, power and perfect team coordination.

    Pyae Sone Aung, 22, rested his paddle after a sprint set. “I am very happy and satisfied as I will compete in the World Games in China. As there are many good teams, we are preparing our best.”

    “I do train my best as my coaches ask,” he said. “I am from Maubin township in Ayeyarwady. I got interested in the sports as my uncle and aunty are national athletes,” he said proudly.

    “As our sport is a team sport, we have to overcome the challenges faced during training with team spirit,” he said. “I want to promote the development of dragon boat racing in Myanmar with medals.”

    “China has a lot of modern infrastructure. There are many things to be learned in China. We are training our best,” Pyae Sone Aung said.

    Nway Ei Phyu, 21, adjusted her grip as her paddle splashed from the last drill. “I am very excited as a new generation athlete. This will be my second time in an international event,” she said, breathing hard.

    “The first time I participated in an international event was in Thailand,” she said. “I have prepared my best. Our biggest competitors are China, Thailand and Indonesia,” she said, adding that it would be her first visit to China.

    Veteran paddler Hla Hla Htwe, 32, has been with the rowing team for over 11 years. She has participated in many international events since joining Myanmar’s national team at 18. “My aunties were also national athletes,” she said.

    “As it’s the first time at the World Games, we must train very hard,” she added. “Our coaches support and encourage us every day. As a team sport, unity is everything. If we are not united, other teams will easily beat us.”

    The World Games will include six different dragon boat racing disciplines, with races covering 200, 500 and 2,000 meters, and crews of either eight or 10 athletes.

    Dragon boat racing has been an invitational sport in the World Games three times, and is to be included fully for the first time at the Chengdu Games.

    Originating in China, dragon boat racing uses unique boats that are decorated with dragon-like features. Paddlers sit facing forwards on both sides, each having one paddle.

    On the bank of Inya Lake, coach U Thein Win, 55, said, “We have competed in two qualifiers for the World Games. We qualified with third place and became one of 12 teams.”

    “We have been training since the qualifiers,” he said. “As it is a world event, there are powerful teams in Southeast Asia and strong crews from Europe,” he continued.

    “The competition is very strong. All teams want their best results. We also want our best results,” he said.

    He wiped his brow, recalling his own career. “It is the highest event so far for the dragon boat athletes. I was a rower from 1989 to 2003 and have been working as a coach since 2006,” he said.

    “In my joint training visit to China, I saw how China’s team train three times a day. We train twice a day,” he said. “We share similar food to China, and their culture feels familiar to us,” he reflected.

    Myanmar’s dragon boat delegation, which includes six male athletes, six female athletes, a team leader, a manager and two coaches, departs for China on August 6.

    “A genius?” Yu Zidi echoed when asked if she sees herself as one.

    “No, not really,” she replied. “It’s all the result of hard training.”

    The 12-year-old swimming prodigy came within a heartbeat of a historic medal at the World Aquatics Championships on Monday, finishing fourth in the women’s 200-meter individual medley.

    Making her international debut, Yu clocked a personal best of two minutes 9.21 seconds – just 0.06 seconds behind bronze medalist Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada, who touched in 2:09.15.

    “My original goal was simply to give my best and try for a podium finish, even though I thought it might be out of reach,” Yu told Chinese television after the race. “But I wanted to give it a shot. I came really close today, so I’ll keep working hard when I get back.”

    A primary school student, Yu showed remarkable composure and progression across all three rounds, improving from 2:11.90 in the heats to 2:10.22 in the semifinals before reaching her personal best in the final.

    “I was really nervous before the race,” she said. “But at the same time, I was excited to compete against some of the world’s top athletes. The result was excellent – it exceeded my expectations.”

    Yu held third place at the halfway mark, but her breaststroke leg cost her crucial time. Despite a strong comeback in the freestyle, the margin proved too tight.

    “My breaststroke still needs a lot of work,” she admitted. “It’s something I’ll definitely focus on improving in training.”

    Asked to reflect on her overall performance, Yu said, “I can’t say I’m totally satisfied, but it’s alright. I need to keep working hard.”

    Yu made headlines earlier this year at China’s national championships, where she swam 2:10.63 – the fastest time ever recorded by a 12-year-old – to take the silver medal.

    She is set to race again in the women’s 200m butterfly on July 30 and the 400m individual medley on August 3.

    Beijing has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 World Aquatics Short-Course Swimming Championships following a decision by the World Aquatics Bureau.

    The announcement was made during the World Aquatics General Congress in Singapore, held alongside the ongoing World Aquatics Championships.

    More than 1,000 elite swimmers from over 200 countries and regions are expected to compete in the Chinese capital over six days in late 2026.

    Beijing, known for its extensive experience in hosting major international sporting events, was selected after a competitive bidding process, World Aquatics said.

    “Beijing has demonstrated time and again its capacity to deliver world-class events across all aquatic disciplines,” said World Aquatics president Husain Al-Musallam. “We are confident that this tradition of excellence will continue in 2026.”

    Beijing has previously hosted 38 World Aquatics events and is also set to stage the full-scale World Aquatics Championships in 2029, which will include open water swimming and high diving in addition to the five core disciplines.

    This will be the third time China has hosted the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m), following Shanghai in 2006 and Hangzhou in 2018.

    Chinese Swimming Association president Zhou Jihong welcomed the decision. “We are thrilled and deeply honored to host this prestigious championship in Beijing, a city with a strong Olympic legacy and enduring passion for aquatic sports,” said Zhou. “This is an important opportunity to showcase the talents of the world’s best swimmers, and we will work tirelessly to ensure a world-class experience for athletes, officials, and fans alike.”

    Among those anticipating the event is Chinese Olympic champion and men’s 100m freestyle long-course world record holder Pan Zhanle.

    “I can’t wait to compete in front of a home crowd,” said Pan. “The short-course championships bring a unique intensity and excitement. I hope to make history in Beijing and inspire the next generation of swimmers.”

    With the successful bid, China further strengthens its role as a major contributor to the global aquatics community, having hosted more than 100 World Aquatics events to date, the federation said.

    The European Union’s executive body recommended on Monday curbing Israeli access to its flagship research funding programme after calls from EU countries to increase pressure on Israel to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

    Multiple EU countries said last week that Israel was not living up to its commitments under an agreement with the European Union on increasing aid supplies to Gaza and asked the European Commission to put concrete options on the table.

    The proposal to partially suspend Israel’s participation in the Horizon Europe programme needs approval from a qualified majority of EU countries to take effect – at least 15 of the EU’s 27 members, representing at least 65% of its population.

    The European Commission said in a statement that the proposal comes as a reaction to a review of Israel’s compliance with the human rights clause of an agreement governing its relations with the EU.

    The bloc’s diplomatic service said in June that there were indications that Israel had breached its obligations under the terms of the pact.

    “While Israel has announced a daily humanitarian pause in Gaza fighting and has met some of its commitments under the common understanding on humanitarian aid and access, the situation remains severe,” the Commission said on Monday.

    The U.N.’s World Food Programme has said that almost 470,000 people in Gaza are enduring famine-like conditions, with 90,000 women and children in need of specialist nutrition treatments.

    The Israeli government has rejected international criticism of its policies in the enclave.

    Israel’s foreign ministry said in a post on social media platform X on Monday that the Commission’s move was “mistaken, regrettable, and unjustified” and that it hoped EU member countries would not adopt the proposal.

    Israel has been participating in the EU’s research programs since 1996, taking part in thousands of joint projects over the past decades.

    The Commission said the proposal would impact the participation of Israeli entities in the bloc’s European Innovation Council Accelerator “which targets start-ups and small businesses with disruptive innovations and emerging technologies that have potential dual-use applications, such as in cybersecurity, drones, and artificial intelligence”.

    It did not say how much funding would be affected by the proposed freeze.

    The number of hungry people around the world fell for a third straight year in 2024, retreating from a COVID-era spike, even as conflict and climate shocks deepened malnutrition across much of Africa and western Asia, a U.N. report said on Monday.

    Around 673 million people, or 8.2% of the world’s population, experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5% in 2023, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, jointly prepared by five U.N. agencies.

    They said the report focussed on chronic, long-term problems and did not fully reflect the impact of acute crises brought on by specific events and wars, including Gaza.

    Maximo Torero, the chief economist for the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization, said improved access to food in South America and India had driven the overall decline but cautioned that conflict and other factors in places such as Africa and the Middle East risked undoing those gains.

    “If conflict continues to grow, of course, if vulnerabilities continue to grow, and the debt stress continues to increase, the numbers will increase again,” he told Reuters on the sidelines of a U.N. food summit in Ethiopia.

    “Conflict continues to drive hunger from Gaza to Sudan and beyond,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in remarks delivered by video link to the summit. “Hunger further feeds future instability and undermines peace.”

    In 2024, the most significant progress was registered in South America and Southern Asia, the U.N. report said.

    In South America, the hunger rate fell to 3.8% in 2024 from 4.2% in 2023. In Southern Asia, it fell to 11% from 12.2%.

    Progress in South America was underpinned by better agricultural productivity and social programmes like school meals, Torero said. In Southern Asia, it was mostly due to new data from India showing more people with access to healthy diets.

    The overall 2024 hunger numbers were still higher than the 7.5% recorded in 2019 before the COVID pandemic.

    The picture is very different in Africa, where productivity gains are not keeping up with high population growth and the impacts of conflict, extreme weather and inflation.

    In 2024, more than one in five people on the continent, 307 million, were chronically undernourished, meaning hunger is more prevalent than it was 20 years ago.

    Africa is projected to account for nearly 60% of the world’s hungry people by 2030, the report said.

    The gap between global food price inflation and overall inflation peaked in January 2023, driving up the cost of diets and hitting low-income nations hardest, the report said.

    Overall adult obesity rose to nearly 16% in 2022, from 12% in 2012, it added.

    The number of people unable to afford a healthy diet dropped globally in the past five years to 2.6 billion in 2024 from 2.76 billion in 2019, the report said.

    The fourth AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF2025) opened today in St. George’s under the theme “Resilience and Transformation: Enhancing Africa-Caribbean Economic Cooperation in an Era of Global Uncertainty.”

    In a passionate keynote address, Prof. Benedict Oramah, outgoing President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, declared the region’s readiness to shift from slogans to systems, unveiling a slate of tangible milestones that signal the deepening of Africa-Caribbean economic and cultural integration.

    “In under four years, we’ve ratified the Partnership Agreement in 11 CARICOM countries, providing the Bank a solid legal foundation to operate, support, and invest in their economies,” said Oramah. This, he acknowledged, represents a “sovereign declaration, that the CARICOM States see in Africa, not just its past, but also its future.”

    These bold initiatives, shared by President Oramah during his address, demonstrate Afreximbank’s commitment to transforming Afri-Caribbean cooperation from aspiration into action:

    • Caribbean EXIM Bank: Feasibility studies are underway for a regional EXIM Bank co-created with the CARICOM Secretariat to unlock industrial development and trade.
    • $250M Growth, Resilience, and Sustainability Fund (GRSF): A new blended finance mechanism to support climate adaptation and development. Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA) will manage the fund, while concessional financing will be raised jointly with the CARICOM Development Fund.
    • CAPSS Launch (Caribbean Payment & Settlement System): Modelled after Africa’s Pan African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), this digital platform will allow real-time payments across the Caribbean in local currencies, eliminating costly conversions and enabling the upcoming CAPSS Card.
    • Creative & Cultural Investment: $24 million has been committed for a film production and training hub in the OECS through CANEX, while other investments have enabled designers and chefs from Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados to feature globally.
    • Artificial Intelligence Hub: A new AI and generative tech centre is being launched in partnership with the P.J. Patterson Institute at the University of the West Indies to place Afro-Caribbean talent at the centre of global innovation.

    The ACTIF2025 also serves as President Oramah’s final address at the Forum, as he prepares to hand over leadership to Dr. George Elombi, Afreximbank’s long-serving Executive Vice President nominated as incoming President by shareholders at the Bank’s 32nd Annual Meeting in Abuja in June 2025.

    “At this critical moment in our collective history, I have no shred of doubt that he is the right person to lead us in the next phase of the Bank’s journey. I am convinced that he will give the Bank’s work in this region a renewed impetus,” he stated.

    Looking beyond the Forum, President Oramah urged the establishment of a sovereign Global Africa Commission to drive forward the long-term integration of Africa and the Caribbean. He proposed that the Commission be jointly supported by Afreximbank, the CARICOM Secretariat, and the African Union, and tasked with advancing the trade, cultural, education, and creative agenda of the growing pan-African alliance.

    “What we have done so far is prove the concept, we now need to institutionalise it,” Oramah said. “We should consider creating a Commission that becomes fully responsible for delivering on the Africa-Caribbean and broader Global Africa initiative… This move will give more focus to the initiative, reduce the administrative burden on Afreximbank and create an environment for innovation.”

    In closing, President Oramah declared “In America, America is first. In Europe, Europe is first. In China, China is first. We are the only ones who put ourselves last,” noting that it is time that Africa changes this posture.

    Meanwhile, Hon. Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada praised the vision and leadership of President Benedict Oramah, describing his presidency as a turning point in the Africa-Caribbean relations.

    Recognising the strategy, integrity and relentless drive employed, PM Mitchell, stated that President Oramah carved out a space for ‘our regions to trade, collaborate, and thrive’. “In the annals of history, you will go down as a pioneer for African people everywhere,” the Caribbean leader declared.

    Prime Minister Mitchell announced a recommendation by the region’s leaders to confer the region’s highest honour to President Oramah; the Order of the Caribbean Community.

    Building on Oramah’s keynote call to institutionalise the Global Africa Initiative through the creation of a permanent Commission, Prime Minister Mitchell voiced full support.

    His message was punctuated by a deeply personal interaction with a young volunteer who asked why Grenada chose to host ACTIF2025; a question he said cut to the heart of the Forum’s purpose.

    “It’s about money. It’s about trade. It’s about investment…  our very survival, prosperity and dignity depends on the economic decisions we make today,” he stated.  “To that young man, I say: our political will to support Global Africa is unwavering. We are not starting from scratch. We are starting from strength. And we will not leave ACTIF2025 with another communiqué, we will leave here with a commitment to act, to build together, to trade together, to succeed together and rise together.”

    In a sobering, yet empowering close, he added “no one is going to save Global Africa but Global Africa itself.”

    More than a dozen sitting and former Heads of State, and Government representatives from Africa and the Caribbean are attending ACTIF2025. Among them are:

    Meanwhile, five transformative deals totaling over US$290 million were signed on Day 1 of ACTIF2025, showcasing Afreximbank’s deepening investment in trade-enabling infrastructure and economic development across the Caribbean. Among the signings was a US$50 million Heads of Terms with the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis for an Education Construction and Rehabilitation Climate-Linked Facility, and a US$40 million public-private partnership with Gemini Integrated Commodities Trading Company Ltd. to develop a modern commercial port in Saint Kitts. In The Bahamas, two landmark transactions were formalised: a US$100 million Receivables Discounting Facility for the Bahamas Striping Group of Companies to rehabilitate over 200 miles of road infrastructure, and a US$40 million facility with Cat Island Infrastructure Company Ltd. for critical roadworks. Rounding out the signings was a US$61.25 million agreement with Speedbird House Ltd. to finance a 150-room Homewood Suites by Hilton in Bridgetown, Barbados—under Afreximbank’s tourism-linked financing initiative, CONTOUR.

    ACTIF2025 continues through 30 July, with panel discussions, business matchmaking sessions, cultural showcases, and deal signings that reflect the Forum’s commitment to moving from rhetoric to results. More than 1,700 people registered to attend ACTIF2025, reflecting the highest level of interest recorded across all four editions.
